I've been on the internet for a pretty long time, and I've noticed that the discourse around furries has changed significantly in the past couple of decades. Back in the olden days, pretty much everyone who wasn't a furry thought furries were lame and weird, thanks in no small part to Richard "Lowtax" Kyanka and the influence that Something Awful had on early 2000's internet culture. Plus, there was always that latent homophobia, and furries were always accepting of LGBTQIA+ folk.

At least as far as I know, this started to morph into something far worse and more openly hateful with the wider polarization of the internet. I should note that the rise of Gamergate happened in 2014, same year as the stupid gas attack at Midwest FurFest. No, I'm not suggesting that they're directly connected; just noting the timing.

Honestly, there's always been a real seedy side to the gaming scene; anyone who's been in a CoD lobby or other similar space can tell you. Likely fueled by the phenomenon Penny Arcade calls the "Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory" (that assholes are now using to justify being assholes, because they're assholes), you have these folks saying heinous stuff to get a rise out of people. Unfortunately, edgy gamer spaces have long been infiltrated by far-right types looking for fresh recruits.

It's all kind of unsettling, looking back and seeing this awful modern culture war play out; anti-furry rhetoric is just a facet of it. I certainly no longer find furries to be weird and dumb, like I used to; I have real problems to worry about, and Lowtax is dead (plus Fragmaster was always funnier, deal with it).

I should also note that a guy I know, one I used to consider a great friend, has fallen down this rabbit hole. He spent at least a year unemployed, and spent that time doing nothing but online gaming. Now he says that he hates furries so much that he wants to be the "Hitler of the furries". Yeah. He also gets weirdly defensive about Elon Musk and thinks low gas prices justify the USA's Middle Eastern quagmire.

He wasn't like this before; I used to crack weird-ass jokes about how Jurassic World would've been improved if the dinosaurs wore maid outfits, and he'd have a sensible chuckle at my bizarre comedy stylings. Now, when he goes on another anti-furry rant and I tell him that the world has actual problems and he should stop worrying about folks who think Kass and Revali are prime husband material, he gets weirdly quiet; like, that silent seething, y'know? It's disturbing.

Anyway, I heard there's a Zootopia sequel coming out? If it happens, I'll catch it in the theater; maybe I'll make some new friends.

There are two types of anti-furs; the naive edgelord and the former furry.

As a furry for 15 years now, I found that most of the very vocal "anti-furries" are the latter and for typically depressing reasons, sometimes because they have no stable support system and can't find a friend so they throw a tantrum. My positive experiences with the fandom are also few and far between- it is bedeviled with lookism, narcissism, and elitism. Furry social circles are competitive and toxic, hostile towards outsiders and indifferent towards furries who don't boast a 200 dollar profile pic, 2k dollar partial, and/or some kind of highly expensive VR avatar with endowments the size of a Geo Metro. Sometimes drama is started from nothing... I don't think Something Awful started the negative perspective on furries, I think we did thanks to the Burned Furs and how we treated one another.

When I say things like this, I am met with aggression and just-world fallacies from other furries, which honestly, just strengthens my opinions.

Normies are easier to get along with and I make friends amongst them just fine, but I cannot relate to them and it saddens me. I always wanted more furry friends and rather than resort to Chudjak levels of "billions must die" anti-furry rage, I simply closed all the doors and it's actually a tranquil experience. Because nobody can hurt me behind these doors.

Yeah, it's important to note that furries are human, and humans are just terrible creatures in general, so there's always that portion of shallow drama jerks mucking things up for everyone else, plus all the grifters doing their hustling. I've heard many tales of top-tier artists leaving because skeevy jerks pretended to befriend them just for free art or such, and a bunch of harassment campaigns against whoever and whatever. It's wild. No wonder that those who end up on the wrong side of mob "justice" bear a grudge.

Well, even I don't know why so much people are against furries. I'm against them because they're impersonating animals, which in my eyes, is a bad idea. Some of the animals they impersonate are even endangered. I wouldn't go as far to being Anti-Furry, that I literally do violent acts against them. I just want them to stop that impersonation. Neither do I want furries to die, I just want them to stop dressing up as animals.

Well, that's just my opinion.

Yeah, when I was much younger, I was one of those weirdo obnoxious human-supremacist types you see congealing in the corners of the internet. I rolled my eyes so hard at those furries who ranted about how humans were bad and evil and such. Now, post-COVID, I see it. It's like people want to hate each other, and to hurt each other. Callous, heartless, cretinous things desperate to have someone beneath them so they can live with the satisfaction that, no matter how bad things get, at least they aren't at the bottom of the heap.
