Team and player notes
With Andrew Patterson having ridden his DBC56 performance into the senior job, this incarnation of the U21 side is rooted in the philosophy of sixth-place NSL side AFC Edencliff, whose manager Paula Foster is taking temporary charge for this tournament largely because the entire starting front three is from her side - the synergistic trio of the speedy Rick Flash, powerful Raven Lomu, and cunning Agnes Oddkellsdóttir. Foster is the first woman to take charge of a Kytlerian national team side, and Oddkellsdóttir - among others in the squad - the first to appear in one. (Technically the team was not all-male though, as there was a non-binary player in one pre-isolation-era squad - there's also one in this one in Alex Gunnarsbur.)

Foster's emphasis is on quick ball movement and keeping it on the ground, a philosophy that works relatively well with the Kytlerian tendency for soccer to draw a smaller, endurance-heavy player pool - the odd dual-national BFG aside, at least.

This team could have been even better if Vincent had played in it - he's still eligible - but with his key role in the senior side and his massive transfer to Q-League side Mipojoseon (who are loaning him back to Santa Mordana, providing a window where he'll pair with shock signing Anna Korniloff-Kouyate for a thrilling one-season title push), he isn't joining the DBC squad.

Where is Vdara? What is Vdara? Who are Vdara? Is it a state? It’s a state of mind, that’s for sure. Established during the times of Ancient Greek colonisation, the first Vdaran settlement was in the modern day capital city of Chania, where a valiant crew had stumbled upon after setting off from Athens, and decided to settle down. This settlement evolved into a city, and this city decided to set up its own settlements, spreading Vdaran culture and ideals across many of the Mediterranean islands, creating their own archipelago. The Vdaran archipelago would go on to change hands several times over the next few millennia, being held by the Turks, Venetians, and Greeks - to name just a few. Fast forward to the present, and now you have a gyro-eating, sports-loving nation with a people who are dedicated to following Vdaran football loudly and proudly. They’ve seen the highs, and they’ve seen the lows, and they’ll now see the present. Fiercely committed to defending their honour, every single Vdaran - from the players, to the coaches, to the ordinary man or woman chilling on their couch, shouting at their television - will be readily available to convince people that, no, Vdara are not has-beans. They’re the real deal.

It's been five years since Sylestone last participated in the Di Bradini Cup and unsurprisingly, this squad is totally unlike the last one that was sent to Valanora. In fact, the only thing that has remained the same is the manager, 47-year-old Cleorough Under-21 head coach Elliot Humphreys, who has been in charge of the club's premier youth academy side for six years now. Despite reaping the rewards at one of the best youth academies in Sylestone - if not in wider Esportiva and arguably the rest of the multiverse - Humphreys failed to deliver last time, Sylestone going 0-0-3 in an admittedly tough group to leave many worries over the future of Sylestonean football. It was not to be, though - now, nine of those 23 players have caps for the senior national team, with players such as Charlotte Eastwood, Jake Blackall, Jack Lawson, Thomas Hellyer and several others all having become worldwide sensations in recent years. Humphreys will employ his favoured 4-4-2 formation, although he has been known to switch between that and a 4-4-1-1 fairly regularly with Cleorough. He's also not afraid to push the wingers up to form a 4-2-4 when chasing a deficit, and can also employ a 5-3-2 or 5-4-1 when defending a slender lead rather well.

Some may notice a few notable omissions from the 26-player side to take the field in Valanora, headlined by St John's Arsenal star Brett Sarcav-Jones. The undoubted captain and superstar should he have elected to come and join the squad, Sarcav-Jones reportedly decided to rest up ahead of a new Q-League season after a demanding Campionato Esportiva, where Sylestone played all nine possible games only to lose to Fhulghamous Peninsula in extra time in the final. The other shock omission is that of AFC Droves centre back Caleb Collings, who many presumed to be a shoo-in after strong performances last year. Humphreys must have not agreede though, so instead he will be shaping up for his first game of the League Number Two season rather than joining teammate and close friend Flynn Lawlor at the Di Bradini Cup.

Natasha Dellit, a regular starter with SFA Cup champions and League Number One oufit Whitepool will captain the Young Sentients in Valanora, and will be expected to lead the defence with her experience. Other notable players include the Pesfield Trees' Mytanar-Sylesotnean duo Krševan Novak and Slavenka Pavić, Pavić being the appointed vice captain behind Dellit should something happen to the centre back. Coming off a season on loan with Dodle in the League Number Two where she absolutely killed the rest of the competition and eventually got her club promoted back to the top flight, her confidence will be skyrocketing as she looks to take on far sturdier, if more exuberant oppositions here. Amongst the squad there are plenty of names at big clubs - Capitol Athletic, Pesfield Trees and Chamberley City all have several representatives, while the all conquering academies of Avondale Beach and Cleorough unsurprisingly have higher numbers, too. 22 of the 26 players have contracts with their League Number One club's senior teams to show just how much quality this side contains, while the other four are all regular starters in the lower divisions of the Sylestonean football pyramid. Copeland AFC midfielder Charlotte Mahoney is the only League Number Three representative amongst the group, the midfielder having shone last year - so much so that she had to ward off several League Number One clubs vying for her signature so she could remain in the city of Betham for personal reasons. Mahoney is one of nine teenagers in this squad, a group headlined by striker Carly Conway and 17-year-old Cleorough ace Connor Golding, who is expected to do bits both off the bench and as a starter this tournament.

There's plenty of talent in this group, and many are expected to go on and become regulars for their national team someday. Can they fight off the curse of the last time a Sylestonean team landed in Valanora and live up to their incredible potential?

THE TUMBRAN NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM
The Black Eagles

The Tumbran National Football Team is Tumbra's main representative in all association football competitions for national associations. Making its debut at the 87th World Cup Qualifiers, the team currently ranks 5th in the world. The team is controlled by the Tumbran Football Federation, which is also the governing body of football in Tumbra. Also known as the Black Eagles, or affectionately the Eagles, the team competes in the World Cup and its related competitions. The team also participates in the Campionato Esportiva, also sends teams to the Di Bradini Cup for Under-21s, and the Under-18 World Cup. The team have won the 51st edition of the former tournament and the 13th edition of the latter tournament; which has led to a keen emphasis on bleeding youth into the national team set-up early. The senior national team's best performance, meanwhile, has been with a Final appearance at the 95th edition of the World Cup, but the finer details of that match will not be dwelt overly long on. With a loyal travelling contingent of supporters known as the Black Army, the Tumbran national team's support will be on display throughout this tournament, with lots of tifos and loud cheers expected throughout matches.

Tactical Set-Up
Tumbra will usually set up in a 4-3-3 formation. The alternate formation is a 4-2-3-1. The team's general strategy is to sit back, soak up attacks, then break on the counter. Four-defender formations are seen as the gospel and orthodoxy in Tumbra; three or five-defender formations haven't really picked up steam in the country, only being resorted to in the midst of play.

In defence, Tumbran orthodoxy is to have a four-player defence; wingbacks in this system are expected to start attacks after the central defenders dispossess marauding attackers. The ideal Tumbran wingback is fast, able to pass, and float into midfield when out of possession to help regain possession; in practical terms, one wingback stays back while one floats into midfield. The central defenders are usually split into two; clean-shorts and dirty-shorts, with one focusing on distribution and the other on dispossession.

The midfield is the crux of Tumbran footballing philosophy, with the defensive midfielder being the most important position on the team. The midfield traditionally has three roles; destroyer, pacesetter and creator. In any case, the more advanced midfielder typically serves as the creator. On very rare occasions where Tumbra seeks to take control of the game for themselves do they play with an outright attacking midfielder; this shift away from the 4-2-3-1 has been the major innovation of the Michael Campbell era so far, and signals a declining reliance on the status of the purely attacking midfielder.

In attack, creative freedom is granted; though history has usually shined its brightest lights on goalscoring wingers. This usually privileges players who cut in on the wing to overload the box, with crosses a secondary option. Crosses may be delivered by either the wingback or the winger; the wingback is preferred. The ideal Tumbran forward is lithe and agile regardless of which side they play on; finishing ability is respected far more than individual flashes of brilliance, though unsurprisingly players with flair are remembered far better than those who aren't.

On a sliding scale between workhorses and technical finesse, Tumbrans as a whole lean towards the former, though obviously with exceptions. Gamesmanship, time-wasting and riling up the opposition are par for the course; but Tumbrans will never directly break any rules. Tumbrans are pretty naff at set-pieces; they prefer scoring from open play.

Yes, this team is using the nickname generally associated with the nation’s ‘main’ team: They never settled on a definitive one for the U21 squads, with both 'Bear-Bellettes' and 'Baby Belles' having been suggested in the [now distant] past -- by the news media, rather than by the sporting authorities? -- but firmly rejected.
Yes, as usual for this nation's Football teams, it’s an all-female squad again. As I’ve explained before, this is because the main ball-game that's traditionally been played in Bears Armed is 'FieldBall' which actually is closer to being a form of Rugby, but [for several reasons] that sport’s “proper” teams are all-male and so some females who wanted to make it as players decided that switching to Soccer — and trying to establish a professional league for that sport for themselves instead — might be a viable alternative: They were right, because that professional league was founded shortly after WC44 and so has now been in operation for well over two eightSquareds of years... despite the fact that Bears Armed remained [basically] closed-off from the outside world, and so could not have been sending entrants to international sporting contests, until less than half an eightSquared years ago! ("Timey-wimey, wibbly-wobbly...") The same set of linked temporal anomalies has also had other effects...

All of the players and support staff are actual Ursines (i.e. anthropomorphic, bipedal Bears)], except for any whom I actually specify as being members of other ‘peoples’ instead. The Harr'aynau people are physically human (more-or-less, anyway, although inclined towards heavy builds & hairiness), but are spiritually & culturally Ursine instead. The VerraVokksurr are human-sized anthropomorphic Red Foxes.

Chaplain, Ursion: Jharge “No Relation” Potter _ Clan = Artorran; male Ursine; assigned to this duty by his superiors approximately two years after the end of DBC45 and thus eighteen years before this tournament. He also works with the Belles’ ‘main’ team. (Age = mid-forties; fur = light brown, right-pawed; like many other members of his clan, is slightly more “anthropomorphic” than is typical for Bears from this nation; speaks Ursine, English, French, some German, and some Greek; keen chess-player.)

Security Chief: Senior Major Merrfinh Blonk _ clan = WestWoods; male; on loan [again, as for DBC45-47] from [REDACTED] in the Confederal Army. He also works with the Belles’ ‘main’ team. (Age = 50; fur = medium-brown & relatively long, right-pawed [apparently]; speaks Ouesttree, French, Ursine, and English… at the least.
Kit Supervisor: Missus Brooks _ Clan = WesterBrock [‘Separate Demi-Clan’]; female Brock (i.e. anthropomorphic Badger); worked as an assistant to Missus Burrows, who now holds this role with the Belles’ senior team, at Wimbley Stadium and then also with the Belles through BDC#45, DBC#46, and the WC#84 qualifying stage before being appointed to this position; responsible for ensuring that all players have suitable kit available, clean and intact, for every game, and also [following the coaches’ orders] for making sure that their boots have the appropriate studs fitted for dealing with local conditions; also, makes sure that balls and [if necessary] temporary nets are available for practice when the team is away from home. Apparently middle-aged, although with her people it’s hard to tell, and with fur marked as in a RL European Badger.

Fandom Liaison Officer: Etta Halliday _ Clan = WestWoods; female Ursine; played in the DBC45 squad, as the usual starting Right Back, while a student at WestPort University and a member of that institution’s own football team; was too old for DBC46, but played a major role in organising things for the Belles’ travelling fans during that contest and was subsequently hired by BAAS on a full-time basis for this purpose; she also works with the Belles’ main team; age = 37 years, right-pawed, fur = yellow-brown, short for her age but solidly built & [despite that build] surprisingly fast, fearless; graduated from WestPort University 2 years after DBC45, with a degree in ‘Humanology’; speaks English, Ouesttree, Ursine, French, and German; generally cheerful; very fond of sweet foods.

Substitutes will be chosen from among the team's other players to cover as wide a range of positions as possible, including at least one Goalkeeper and at least one Lynchpin, with everybody probably given a chance unless & until the best of them have been identified.

Style: Offensive, modifier = +3.5 ("A good offence is the best defence"...). This has actually been reduced slightly since DBC#45, when they used +4.0 instead, because team training since then has included a bit more emphasis on tightening up their defence.
They have also modified their planned formation slightly from the “traditional” Ursine one, which included a front row of at least 5 (normally arranged as 3 strikers & 2 wingers), with 2 midfielders, 2 backs, and a ‘Lynchpin’ (whose starting position was approximately be at the midpoint of an imaginary cross drawn between those other four non-forwards’ positions). Two of the strikers now drop back to a bit behind the line formed by the Centre Forward and the two wingers (who might move “in” by a little bit, as well), while the Lynchpin is now stationed noticeable closer to the backs than to the midfielders. “Joining the dots” would, looking at the pitch from above and placing the Bears’ goal-line at the bottom of the picture, give you [approximately] a stretched-sideways ‘W’ in front of a stretched-sideways ‘M’.

It is quite likely that penalties and free kicks will initially be taken by the players who “earned” these, if they are still fit to play on, but this situation may change once the coaches have had a chance to see the girls in ‘proper’ action rather than just in practice matches. Also, note that the usual starting Centre Forward is already known to be good at penalties and is already the other likeliest candidate to be used for taking these.

Any really serious offences by my players would probably result in injuries to your players, and causing any serious injuries to my players would probably require such obviously-deliberate attacks that your players would get yellow or even red cards as a result too. Don’t kill anybody, or inflict injuries that would be serious enough to end careers, without checking with me & getting my approval (which is unlikely to be granted…) first.
Godmod Other Events: Y, I suppose, at least as long as you do so in an AMUSING way... but please remember that Ursines (and Tigers, and Badgers…) are fully sapient beings, as much as Humans are, not instinct-driven animals. Oh, and of course female Ursines (or Tigers, or Foxes orBadgers…) are not sexually interested in Humans (of either sex), and it's very unlikely that female Harr'ayanau would be either. Please don't have them run amok or outright revert to animality, without checking by TG first, don't make assumptions about their views on politics or religion, and don't do anything that would make more than one of them incapable of playing in their next game...

Kit: This incarnation of the team will normally wear the usual set of designs (from ‘ediraf’) that the Belles have favoured in the past.

Bears Armed has traditionally used base-8 arithmetic, for several reasons, and the set of ‘shirt numbers’assigned to this team’s players has been determined on that basis. The numbers '10' & '22' have both been "retired" in memory of certain past wearers.

NOTES

Ursines may tend to be a bit less agile & slower to accelerate on average than humans of comparable ages, but this team's members were carefully selected so the gap between them & their opponents in this respect should be narrower than some people might expect. They do tend to have [slightly] poorer eyesight than humans, on the whole (although the members of both Clan Gunnar and the Sun Clan are generally an exception to this rule, and the eyesight of the latter group is actually often at [slightly] better-than-human levels instead), so long-distance passes & shots at goal will tend to be rarer behaviour for them than they are for human teams... but their typical size & strength mean that when they're running with the ball it will probably take a very brave human — as well as a very skilled one — to tackle them successfully (or, at least, one who has reasonable experience of playing against Ursines…), which should balance that factor pretty well. They don’t jump very well, but then they’re generally rather taller than most Human players to start with so they shouldn’t need to jump as often in order to intercept [relatively] high shots...
Ursines are physically robust, of course, which means that they're much less likely than humans are to suffer injuries in falls or collisions. The females of this species are more even-tempered than the males, and the team's members will try to stay on their best behaviour not only in order to do well in this contest but also to impress upon the watching humans that Ursines aren't just "dumb beasts". They will not 'dive', or feign injury in other ways, because suggesting that they could be harmed so easily goes strongly against the grain. ‘Northlanders’ are maybe not quite as "civilised" as the 'Mainlanders'… or, at any rate, that’s the traditional stereotype.

Unless our hosts at the match in question object, this team's members (including the designated substitutes for the match in question) will perform a [fairly short] ritual that's called the 'harrdiharr' on the pitch just before play begins... This is a traditional war-dance, meant to over-awe opponents, that has come to be a customary prelude for team games as well (similar to the [RL] New Zealanders' 'haka'...).
As has now been seen during various tournaments, some of our fans like to take drums — and possibly also 'Urrs-horns' [which are similar to Alpenhorns, cow-horns, or other "musical instruments", too — along to the matches…
