Jackson Zuercher Pt 3.

From what BYU could tell, Johnny and Jackson Z, were the dynamic duo on the field, as they led the BYU Miners to a stunning victory against the rival NCS with a final score of 41-13! To Jackson the atmosphere was electric as they yelled and hugged each other in celebration. Unlike last week, they were sporting an all navy uniform which Jackson honestly loved the uni’s but life happened and they would go back to the Navy and White unis soon enough. He shrugged and well as they went back to the locker room, he check his phone to get a text from his brother asking to call. So he went off to the corner and picked up the call from his brother who was drafted 8th over all by the Edmunton Eagles.

“Hey Jack! I just watched the game with NCS, you looked fucking kickass out there!” Blake’s infamous tone came out only for Jackson to hear a smack and his wife scolding him not to cuss in front of the kids.

“Haha, yeah and you know better than to cuss around Saige and Kayden, they are smart and will start using it on the field there in Ranoria.” Jackson laughed at his brother, but heard a sigh from him.

“I know, I know. Now look you did great, even though you kinda got messed up first game against BSU but yeah that happens. Hell I lost to BSU more that I would have liked.” Jackson heard a humming from his brothers wife.

“I know and well its a tough loss, but hey I think you guys found a bounce back, and that Johnny kid kept running over those boys so I think you might wanna target him a little more?” Blake said offering some advice, although Johnny got three out of the six touchdowns.

“Yeah, no he clobbered the defense. Saw him dribble Cluff, it was crazy but he is a monster and well he is surprisingly fast.” Jackson said pointing out the absolute mastery, that Johnny had with his position and how he was willing to run over any defensive player to get the TD.

“Damn yeah he is going to be an absolute unit if, he keeps playing like that and honestly you guys would make a good ass push for the championship game if BSU slows down hah.” Jackson heard another smack from Blakes wife, and a chuckle from Blake himself.

“Yeah, I know its pretty insane how well they started the season. Although it was bound to happen if Bobby is leading the offense, that guy is too good sometimes, maybe for his own good?”

“Yeah.. that might be true but, I am sure you and BYU will be good but I am guessing you are gettingh bored of me so I will let you go man, good luck Jack and I hope you have a Hell of a season at BYU.” With that the older brother hung up and Jackson was left to go back and hang out with the others.

As he did Jackson smiled and gave Wall a hug and then walked back to the others and as wall stood in the middle and yelled. ”Alright guys! We just fucking stuffed NCS, lets keep it going and move on to Utah state and show them what its like to come into the Big 8!” As he spoke the team cheered and some headed off back to there dorms, well others headed off to go a party. Personally for Jackson he wanted to get some sleep, yeah they scored 41 against NCS their defense still got 1 sack on the freshman. As he bid Wall goodbye, he walked into his room and pulled out the scriptures, after some reading he headed off to bed.

Johnny Wall records 195 yards and 3 TD's

In an impressive performance by the BYU Miners football team, their tight-end Johnny Wall emerged as a standout player. The Miners secured a decisive victory over the New Cardonia State Thunderhawks with a final score of 41-13. This victory was driven in large part by the stellar performance of Johnny Wall. Throughout the game, Johnny Wall proved to be an unstoppable force on the field. He displayed exceptional skill and agility as he scored three touch-downs for the Miners. This outstanding feat not only contributed significantly to his team's overall success but also demonstrated his exceptional talent as a tight-end. The BYU quarterback Jackson Zuercher played a significant role in facilitating Johnny Wall's success on the field. Zuercher's impressive throwing skills allowed him to amass an impressive total of 335 passing yards during the game. And out of those 335 yards, an astounding 195 were caught by none other than Johnny Wall himself. Johnny Wall's ability to tear apart the New Cardonia State defense showcased his prowess as a Tight-End receiver. His strategic positioning and impeccable timing allowed him to consistently make critical plays that propelled his team forward. His contributions undoubtedly played a vital role in securing such a lopsided victory for the BYU Miners. This remarkable performance by Johnny Wall reflects both his personal talent and skills as well as the cohesive teamwork exhibited by the entire BYU football team. The bounce-back from their previous challenges is evident in their triumph against New Cardonia State Thunderhawks. Overall, Johnny Wall's outstanding performance and impactful contributions have solidified his position as a key player for the BYU Miners football team. As they continue their season, it will be exciting to see how he continues to excel on and offensively contribute to their success on the field.

"WISHBONE LEFT INSIDE TRIPLE, ON 1! READY...BREAK!"

Mike Randall jogged towards the line for the Cadets' first offensive play of the game. Cadet fans placed high expectations on their football team, expectations that were hardly tempered by a week 1 NSCF win. As the low rumble of the stadium affectionately known as "The Boot Camp" came to a halt, he could feel the pressure to succeed weighing on his shoulders

"SET.... HUT! WHITE 80... SET HUT!"

The ball came through the center's legs, onto his ass, and into Randall's hands. He turned back towards his fullback, staring down the Koronki Tech defensive end, who crashed down, towards the running back. The first few moments of a triple option seemed to move in slow motion, a beautiful symphony of cut blocking by the offensive line, quickly followed by a quarterback's sonata of give, keep, and pitch options. As the defensive linemen crumpled over the top of his line, and the remaining end crashed in, Randall pullled the ball, darting towards the opposite hash.

Clearing past the tackle box pileup, Randall began to look for his next read - the outside linebacker, who began flowing over towards pitch man B.T. Jackson. Randall waited for what felt like an eternity for the linebacker to commit, and the second the read man turned his hips towards the pitch man - with the help of a well timed fake pitch - Randall darted upfield, following lead blocker J.J Wisniewski. The playside safety came down to make a play and...

KRAK!

The sound of pads on pads echoed threw the stadium as the Koronki Tech safety suddenly believed he could fly, landing on his back as J.J Wisniewski steamed forward, plotting a new course towards the backside safety in pursuit. Randall sprinted upfield, having cleared the defense. The 50, the 40, the 25, and...

"TOUCHDOWN CADETS!" The stadium PA blared.

Mike had a feeling everything was going to be alright.

GSPN’s College Football Update, part 1: Since You’ve Been Gone
This week was the first week of GCAA football in history that didn’t include the Alexandroupolis Redbirds or the Constantinople Binturongs, yet football still happened. CFU is here for you with a recap of last week’s action, both in the GCAA and the NSCF.

Big Idea #1: The conference transfers came to play
With Green Meadows moving to the Metro and Behring moving to the Mountain, there was much ado made about the new schools’ ability to be competitive in these conferences, especially as many of the smaller schools departed. The Behring Bluejays proved they came to play this week with an impressive two minute drill ending in a touchdown to defeat the reigning champion Eriksberg Chestnuts, while Green Meadows held down Coleman to prove the Metro is as competitive as ever.

Eriksberg made the short trip up the River Highway to open their season on the road against the newcomers in what some journalists described as a “charity run” or a “buy game.” The Chestnuts kept the lead throughout the game, ending the first half 17-10 before allowing a Bluejays field goal on the opening drive of the second. With the lead in the balance, Eriksberg rebuffed several attempts by Behring to drive into their territory, but could not put together an offensive drive to put the game out of reach. With the score 17-13 inside the final two minutes, the Bluejays received a punt from deep in Eriksberg territory and proceeded to march up the field, culminating in a touchdown pass from senior quarterback Erik Jones to sophomore wide receiver Tre Mortensen to give the Bluejays their first and only lead of the game. Meanwhile, the Hawks defeated the Miners behind a suffocating defense that gave up only two field goals in the second half and less than two hundred yards of total offense.

Green Meadows faces a dangerous Alexandria U team that defeated fellow conference newcomers Summit this week, while Behring faces the Weepwee Willows.

Big Idea #2: Bye weeks are a thing now
If you paid close attention to the schedule, you may have noticed two big teams missing from the week 1 scoreboard; the Weepwee Willows and the Rosetta Orange Aces. No, these teams did not join the Gesemite Conference or defect to NSCF; they simply do not have a conference opponent this week. Both the Metro and Mountain conferences now have seven teams, meaning each will have three games per week, with the seventh team being the odd man out. There was originally some discussion of holding out-of-conference matches between the teams during their bye weeks, but that was scrapped in the mad dash to salvage the conference schedule amidst the chaos of the River Conference folding.

Big Idea #3: Recruiting is well underway
Joseph Davis (5* ATH, Metro East HS) made his first official visit this past weekend to the University of Damascus, where he took in the Cougars’ routing of the Athens Wildcats. Davis, who was an first team all-New Gesem pick at runningback and an alternate at DB last year, was in the locker room for coach Vaughn Newberry’s pep talk to his players before the game and was later seen in a Bing Bong video filmed at the Gamma Phi Rho house. GPR is the collegiate affiliate of the Wapitis fraternity, of which both Coach Newberry and Joseph’s father, former GFL offensive tackle Ryan Davis, are members.

In other recruiting news, Gerald Morris (4* C, Rosetta Catholic) announced he will be staying close to home, verbally committing to Rosetta University, citing a desire to be close to his family and what he called the “values” of that program. In a blockbuster week 1 GJCAA matchup between Central Community College in Constantinople and Busiris Junior College, 5* outside linebacker Bruce Morris (no relation) from Central and 5* middle linebacker Jason Russell from Busiris took a photo together outside of the Busiris JC stadium, which Bruce later captioned “imagine this coming at you.” Both Morris and Russell are being recruited by the University of Alexandroupolis.

Big Idea #4: Expect More Growing Pains from Constantinople
Despite earning the W in week 1 against debutante team Université nationale de Saint-Jean-Jacques-sur-Mer, the ‘rongs gave their fans reason for concern as they opened this season on the road. Zachary Cook, who surprised many by winning the starting battle last year as a true freshman, showed more of the inconsistency that was his hallmark in NSCF 29, throwing for fewer than one hundred yards and often looking lost under pressure from the Toucans’ defense. He was bailed out more than once by senior runningback Kenan Holt, who looked every bit the part of the workhorse back as he lined up for every offensive snap and carried for over two hundred yards. Despite Holt’s heroics, the team managed only three third-down conversions, leading to a dull back-and-forth that helped nobody’s highlight reels.

Big Idea #5: Repeating Won’t be Easy for the ‘birds
Similar to their rivals from up the River Highway, the Redbirds won a scrappy game that cast nearly as much doubt on the venerable Curtis Decker, for whom retirement rumors are as strong as ever after ‘polis made the playoffs for the first time last year as conference winners, as the ‘rongs’ win over Saint-Jean-Jacques-ser-Mer did. Nevertheless, of the two sophomore Gesemite starters, Larry Sanchez did a much more convincing job leading his team in week two, owing largely to Alexandroupolis’s deep receiver room. No fewer than six receivers had catches on Saturday night in Alexandroupolis, including wideouts Baker, Parker, Diaz, Scott, and Richardson as well as tight end Sean Martin, who made the game-winning catch in the fourth quarter to put the Redbirds over the top. Nevertheless, the ‘birds showed signs of struggle, failing to get a single carry over four yards and taking a whopping ten pre-snap penalties between both sides of the ball.

Profile: John Griffin College
Located in the small town of Griffinsville (not to be confused with Griffinsburg an hour to the south), just outside the gates of Fort Griffin, New Gesem’s largest military installation, John Griffin College is New Gesem’s military academy and staff college. Named after General John Griffin, former military chief of staff and the son of industrialist and Gryphons fraternity founder Randolph Griffin, JGC’s New Gesem Corps of Cadets graduates approximately one thousand officers per academic year who commission into the New Gesem Army, Air Force, and Navy as second lieutenants and ensigns. In addition to the NGCC, John Griffin also hosts professional military education through the Gesemite General Staff College and Gesemite War College.

Students at JGC take a common core curriculum consisting of engineering and leadership classes, as well as physical education. Athletics are a point of emphasis; high school athletics are a major factor in admissions, and most students are involved in extramural athletics at either a varsity or club level. In addition to their academic and athletic obligations, JGC students spend their summers in military training. The first two summers are combined across all three branches, while the final two summers are conducted by the individual branches. Varsity athletes, especially in football, are exempted from some, but not all military training requirements.

GSPN College Football Gameday Week 2 Preview
This week, GSPN College Football Gameday comes to us from the Dome at the New Gesem Center, home of the Alexandria Bulls of the GFL and the Alexandria University Angels of the GCAA’s Metro Conference. The Angels are home against the Green Meadows Hawks, who upset Coleman in their first Metro Conference match last week, but the topic of conversation goes first to…

In the Mountain Conference, defending champions the, sorry, The Eriksberg University Chestnuts fell last week to a last-minute field goal by the Behring Bluejays, a team that is new to the Mountain Conference. While the sportsbooks still have the ‘Nuts as a favorite over the Damascus Cougars, GSPN’s talking heads are split, apparently as much to cause an argument as anything. Beaming his thousand-watt smile, Kenny starts with Remy, which seems to confuse Solomon, who’s already leaning into his mic when Remy starts talking.

Remy: “Look, at the end of the day, Eriksberg’s a good football team, and I don’t think one poor performance negates that. Behring is a new team, it’s a triple-option team, and I don’t think Eriksberg has seen too many of those.”

Here Solomon looks like he wants to interrupt again, probably to point out that Constantinople used a triple option in NSCF 26 and continued using it in domestic play until last year, but Remy continues unabated.

“I think Eriksberg against Damascus is going to be a physical contest, and I just don’t see Damascus having answers for all the offensive weapons the ‘Nuts are going to throw at them. Eirksberg thirty, Damascus seventeen.”

Rex: “Two words: Ryan McCarty. Ryan McCarty is Eriksberg’s quarterback, he’s a sophomore, he’s a stud, and I think he makes the difference this afternoon for the Chestnuts. Lots of deep passes. He’s got a strong receiver corps. I don’t think there’s any reason to run the ball when you’ve got Ryan McCarty behind center. Eriksberg forty-two, Damascus twenty-four, McCarty throws for four hundred yards, four touchdowns, and an interception.”

Now that it’s Solomon’s turn to speak, he’s unprepared; Sarah looks like she’s ready to jump in, and now Solomon is being chivalrous, but after an awkward ten seconds, Kenny gestures for Solomon to please start talking now.

Solomon: “Last week, Eriksberg was beaten by a team that has never played in D-I before, while Damascus held Athens to zero points–ze-ro points-uh--and you jabronies want to talk about the Chestnuts being a good team, or Ryan McCarthy having a breakout game? Ryan McCarthy can play the best game of his life and it ain’t going to matter, because the Cougars have his number. They return seven–seven!--defensive starters from last year, two All-Gesemite cornerbacks and Cade Watson, the monster back, the beast, their defensive signal-caller and do everything guy. I guarantee you McCarthy is having nightmares about Watson, and he knows he’s going to struggle to complete a pass. I think Coach Vandermere at Eriksberg better brush up on the triple-option, because he’s going to need it against that Cougars D. Nine-six Damascus.”

Sarah: “The loss against Behring in week one has to be hard for a program like Eriksberg, but that’s just going to fire them up more. This is a team that’s come back from adversity before, and I think they’re going to vent their frustrations on Damascus. The Eriksberg University has something to prove, and I think they’re going to prove it. Twenty-seven seventeen Chestnuts.”

There really isn’t a good segue from GCAA to NSCF, but the producer is giving Kenny the eye, so he interjects with a cheery “...and what about the Redbirds and Binturongs this week?”

Solomon: “Who do they play again?”

Rex gives Solomon a glowering look.

Rex: “University of Columbus-Prairie and Saint Jean-Jacque-Cousteau…that one.”

Solomon: “That was last week’s matchup, you–”

Before Solomon can finish the thought, Sarah interjects, giving Kenny a meaningful look as she does, like “are you gonna control this?”

Sarah: “The matchups are switched. Last week the Binturongs played the Toucans and the Redbirds played the Blue Jays–I just noticed there are a lot of bird mascots in the Borealis…”

With the nonsequitur, Sarah starts to trail off, but there’s no one to rescue her. The producer is turning the color of Alexandroupolis’s helmets while Solomon pushes back from the table. Her hero comes from the most unlikely place; her immediate left, where Remy sits.

Remy: “To say nothing of the Cranes, Royal Eagles, and Feathercaps in the Heartland. Anyway, I think the reversed matchups should give us a good opportunity to evaluate both teams ahead of their rivalry matchup in week 3. The Toucans came out in a pretty typical pro set, so if Alexandroupolis can contain them the way that Constantinople did, it’ll be a pretty good indicator of what we can expect in the Redbirds-Binturongs matchup the following week. I’m getting into your lane a little bit here, Rex, but I’m really excited about Hai Dong Rong for the Toucans. He’s a freshman receiver from Shenzo, and he straight-up burned a couple of the ‘rongs’s defensive backs. With better play calling and some confidence, he’ll be a real problem for the rest of the MinCon.”

Rex: “You are in my lane, Remy, but I’m glad you talked about Hai Dong, because it means I get to talk about my boy Kenan Holt. You want to talk about making an impact? This man puts up two hundred all-purpose yards last week in what was otherwise a lackluster game, and you know he’s not done. He’s got the work ethic that the Reverend Gibbs instilled in his Pilgrims teams back in the day, and you know he’s going to put in that work against UCP.”

Solomon: “I agree with both of you gentlemen, but don’t overlook the possibility that week two could be a trap game for either or both. We all see the downsides of their week one wins, but these are two undefeated teams going into a rivalry week with everything to play for. I think it’s going to be on both Kirby Wright and Curtis Decker to keep their players focused and playing one week at a time.”

Sarah: “Locker room leadership is key, too, and it goes beyond the coaches. Kirby Wright has a great pedigree in Quebec, but he’s brand-new. Guys like Holt, like Jack Edwards and George Reed on defense, need to step up and let the younger players know that nothing is guaranteed, especially not in NSCF.”

Moving onto the obligatory final topic of the day, the match between Alexandria and Green Meadows that will happen literally a quarter mile away. The pundits all shuffle their notes and search for talking points to avoid a repeat of the NSCF debacle. Seeing the men are still reading, Kenny jumps to Sarah, who can usually be counted on to come up with a feel-good message off the cuff.

Sarah: “I think this comes down to special teams, to be completely honest with you.” Here the men give her condescending glances. “And not just because I was a kicker! Alexandria defeated Summit last week with an unusual scoreline because they got a safety on an end zone punt in the third quarter, and I think that just shows that at this point in the season, teams are still putting their offenses together. When there are a lot of punts and long field goal attempts, it becomes a battle for field position, and the players just have to be ready when they’re called upon. There is so much pressure on you when you’re called on to make those field goals, and no one knows your name if you make it, but God forbid…Oh, the score? Uh, nine to six, Alexandria.”

Remy: “Uh, you know, I think Alexandria, they put up a real good fight against, what was it, Summit last week, and they’re going to go into this game at home with that same mentality. They’re scrappy, they’re a basketball school, and they’re going to try to prove something against Summit. If they can execute, do the little things well, they could put together a nice little season. Uh, seventeen-fourteen, Angels.”

Rex: “Zigs wide receiver…” He checks his notes, points at something on the page. “Cormac Jackson. True freshman out of Busiris, planning to major in accounting, three-star recruit, had offers at Thebes and Rosetta. I think he’s going to explode today. Twenty-four fourteen Summit, with Jackson making two…no, three hundred receiving yards.”

Solomon: “Man, I don’t know. There’s so many damn games now. Let me get back to ya.”

“Hey! Hey Mack!”

Mack King, freshman defensive end for the BSU Broncos, was walking back from class when he heard a familiar voice call his name out. He spun around,

“Big Red!” He called out to Alabaster Red, junior linebacker, defensive captain, and NSCF 28 DPOY runner-up. Alabaster was a big reason why Mack had chosen to go to LeBois. He was a determined leader who demanded everything from his teammates. The more Mack heard about how brutal yet unifying weight lifting sessions were, how Alabaster would scream constructive criticism and encouragement in equal measure, how he would dog you for a failure but help build you up so that was never repeated, the more he heard, the more he knew Big Red was the kind of man he wanted to learn from. And so he became a Bronco.

“What’s going on man? Coming back from class?”

“Yuppp just got through a lecture about all the different islands of Cardenao and shit like that.”

“Oh cool cool…learn anything cool?”

“Kinda I guess, I mean I already knew each of the islands was like…different. Unique. The people and the culture, it’s all kinda Cardenaoan but sorta not at the same time? Plus they all look different!”

Alabaster rolled his eyes at this, “Alright Mack I know you’re from Eastern Cardenao and it’s a bit of a shock but…yeah dude we’re all a little different and that’s what makes us Cardenaoan!”

“Mannnn right I know that! I was just surprised at how, what’s the word she used…how stark the differences are. Like…Isla Kamishi, where did that orientalism come from? I mean Cardenaoans are Cardenaoan…and they are Cardenaoan don’t get me wrong!!! I’m just wondering how they got to be different, like there’s a theory that the original settlers of that island came from Quebec but never went any further, I mean it’s not a bad thing or anything like that, different is good! I’d say we’re different, but that’s just cause we kick ass!”

Red laughed at this, “Bet your ass we did, we cleaned up last game!”

“B-Y-U? B-Y-WHO!”

“B-Y-WHOOOOOO” Alabaster echoed, he loved this fun-loving competitor side of Mack’s personality. “You ran it up on them man, absolutely killed it.” He pretended to hold a microphone in front of the freshman edge, “Tell us Mack, how did you feel about your performance out there tonight? 3 sacks, five solo tackles, six assisted, that’s quite a night!”

“Ah gee first I just want to give a shout out for the rest tha D boys, all you see out there on the field is just a fraction of what we do, but you know what felt real good? Hitting that BOOOOOM on the Z!”

“Alright, alright man keep it chill haha today we’re winning, tomorrow it could be them and you don’t want those words coming back to bite! …you gonna be there tonight? Bobby B will be.”

“You know I’ll be. Midnight murder sesh at the gym first then……everything after? I wanna meet those girls again!”

Big Red laughed, “Oh you will man, they definitely want to see you again. I’ll see you later Macko.”

“What’d you say??”

“I SAIDDDD, ARE YOU HAVING A GOOD TIME TONIGHT?”

“……HUH??? SORRY I CAN’T HEAR YOU!”

Daniel Samuel sighed to himself as the petite brunette from his ‘Geopolitical history of Rushmore’ class walked away, the girls nevvvvver want to talk to the punters. The New Cardonia State Thunderhawk punter sulked against the wall for a minute, little do those ladies know he averaged 46.2 yards per attempt in the game against BYU or that he put three down in the 20 yard line?

He smirked to himself. No, no they did not.

But then again, he was the one slouching against the wall, no babes under his arm. What the hell is the point of being a college athlete then? He wondered as he pushed his way through the crowded frat house.

The air was heavy and hot and…moist. Everything was moist, even the walls were sweating out years of captured party fumes. It was kinda gross and Daniel decided he needed a drink to make the most of this night out.

Some of the guys on the team had been feeling up to it and wanted to hit up some parties, make an impression on some girls, just see where the night takes them. He hadn’t wanted to go, but he got talked into it. “Cmonnnn Danuel, it’ll be fun!” they said. Yeah, for them maybe.

He looked about into the crowded dance floor. There was Deacon St. John with a girl under each arm and two more in front of him, no surprise though. The freshman wide receiver was an absolute killer on the field and built like a God, only natural he was a hot commodity. Nick Singer, the Ranorian QB, towered over most of the room and seemed more interested in hearing himself talk and getting attention than actually picking up chicks. Then, as his eyes swept over the room, he saw them.

Looking like three sore thumbs cowered up in the corner were the trio of Utahan freshmen, the mormons. In the middle of the three was Pule Tuigamala, the wide receiver who was NCS’ first ever international recruit had a bit of a slow start to his Thunderhawk career. Deacon St. John had seized the WR1 slot, John Hughes was possibly the fastest man on the team and was a touchdown threat every snap so his position at WR2 was untouchable, then there was the sure handed senior Kieran McCroy filling in behind him. Pule was getting some action on the field, he’d pulled in all three of his targets so far for an impressive 57 yards and while you could tell he wanted to see even more game time, he was doing well to keep his head down and embrace to grind to get where he wanted to be. To his right was the massive Tanielu Tupua, lad was over 300 pounds and seemed like his frizzy black hair touched the clouds, damn he was so tall and an absolute mastodon on the o-line. Daniel was initially surprised to see the big boy double fisting drinks but……Tupua seemed like the kind of big boy who liked to cut loose. Finally, there was the defensive end Garran Cluff, almost as tall as Tanielu but nowhere near as massive as the linesman. Out of the three of them, only Tanielu looked comfortable in this environment. Pule looked like a kid without his parents and Garran just looked…bored.

“KEG! KEG! KEG! KEGGGGGGGG!”

Daniel wheeled around just in time to watch Maxx Dye, sophomore kicker…THE KICKER for fucks sake, doing a keg stand with, of course, several attractive girls lifting his legs up.

Daniel sighed and rubbed his eyes.

The fucking kicker man.

Riverstone international School Otters 30-33 Ficilian Point Raiders

This affair between two lowly rated teams ended up being a very entertaining game for fans and neutrals alike as the two teams combined for 873 yards. For the Riverstone Otters, the story of the night was RB1 Cortney Allen going out with a bruised back after two rushes before freshman Stephen Darden went absolutely off, with 114 rushing yards and 142 receiving yards and a rushing and receiving score. The team had a very balanced approach to the game as they threw for 291 yards and added 156 rushing yards too. For the Ficilian Point Raiders, wide receiver/cornerback Kyle Session was the man of the night, grabbing all 11 of his targets for 187 yards and two touchdowns, including the game winning touchdown and two point conversion. The rushing game was pretty underdeveloped, only 52 yards with Jaylen Jeanpierre leading the pack on 27 yards after five attempts, but the Raiders won so it all worked out.

Skyview Mountain Academy Fliers 31-26 Hathathia High School Pirates

An extremely sketchy win for the Skyview Fliers as they scored all 31 of their points in the first half and could do nothing but watch as the Hathathia Pirates scored 10 points in the third quarter, then a touchdown with a little over nine minutes left in the fourth quarter, but 1067 people were tuned in as the Fliers secured the victory. For the winners, junior QB Peppi Klerkx had a forgettable game a week after killing Academy Cardonia, as he only completed 17 passes for 182 yards, sure he threw two touchdowns but he threw two interceptions and was sacked twice as well. On the defensive side of things, linebacker Kyle Smith had six solo tackles, four assisted, 1 tackle for a loss, 1 sack, two passes defended and he intercepted both of them. Great performance for him that really gives his recruitment effort a boost. For the Hathathia Pirates, their quarterback play wasn’t much better as Stan Aniol Dereschi completed 26 of 33 passes for 223 yards and touchdown, but he did throw two interceptions and was sacked four times. Senior Kyle Ball had a bounce back game as he caught all six of his targets for 91 yards and a touchdown after only catching one pass last week. Unfortunately, early in the third quarter the lad was struck with a case of back spasms and it seems he’ll be out for the next two weeks. Chase Johnson had a decentish running game, gaining 78 yards and a touchdown on six rushes while linebacker Greg Tereshinski held it down on defense with 4 solo tackles and assisting another three.

Brøgby Preparatory Academy Miners 38-3 Timberline High School Wolves

The Brøgby Miners entered this game as heavy favorites but nobody could’ve predicted the level of RAWRCRUSH they inflicted on the Timberline Wolves. For the victors, senior quarterback Michael Monrovia turned in an impressive performance as he completed 29 of his 43 throws for 346 yards and four touchdowns, adding another 52 yards on nine rushing attempts. Senior wide receiver Elgin Spencer had a game to brag about as he hauled in seven of eight targets for 135 yards and a touchdown while sophomore Dallas Simmons followed up on a strong week 1 showing by catching nine of his team high 12 targets for 95 yards and a touchdown. While he wasn’t a stat leader for the Miners, senior defensive linemen Adam Hinton ran the show with his two sacks coming for huge losses, along with two other solo tackles and an assisted to force a three and out. For the losing wolfpack, not much good to review here. The best performer was arguably junior safety T.J. Taylor who recorded seven solo tackles and two assisted with a sole tackle for a loss. Offensively, Robbie Stephens had a terrible day under center as he completed just under 52% of his 27 pass attempts, only going for 117 yards. Tony DeWitt led the running game with 30 yards, Avery Nichols was the top performing receiver with 41 yards, it was just brutal for the Wolves.

Escuela Nacíonal DCPF Footballers 21-16 J.C. Evermore Academy

After a commanding win in week one, La Escuela looked to make it two in a row against J.C. Evermore and they did exactly that thanks to running back Wesley Hargrove taking over. The junior exploded for 95 yards on 17 rushes and added 2 receptions from three targets for 34 yards on top, while he didn’t find the endzone every single one of his yards were vital for the Footballers. Brandon Benson had an interesting game at quarterback, he only completed 55% of his passes for a little over 230 yards and he did throw two touchdowns but…it all felt a little reserved from him. Watching the game you got the sense the situation was perfect for him to take over, but the junior seemed to shy away from the challenge. Senior receiver Javarrian Uriarte bounced back after a quiet first week as he caught all four of his passes for a touchdown and 110 yards, though 90 of those came on a single catch when he scored a catch and run with 13:24 left in the first quarter. Did he truly have a good game? Stats say so… Junior linebacker Seth Webster was an absolute machine in shutting down the run game, with four of his seven solo tackles going for losses as he helped hold J.C. Evermore to 22 yards of running. For the losers, it was a rough night. Patrik Massaquoi threw for 259 yards with 80% accuracy but that was only good for a touchdown and he got sacked three times. 22 yards of rushing means we’re not wasting time on the runningbacks, so looking at the receivers it’s clear the offense flowed through Jamarcus Smith, with the junior catching five of six targets for 103 yards and a touchdown. Perhaps the best player for the Evermore Academy was senior linebacker R.C. Smotherman, who smothered his man to the tune of 12 total tackles and five for loss.

Dreadnought Conference
Predicted Order of Finish:

Alpha Division
1. Wirr Tsi School for the Gifted Masterminds
2. Aya K. Jackson High School Runners
3. South Chromia High School Terror
4. Wirr Tsi Capital School Bears

Beta Division
1. Kynxe High School Monsoon
2. Dre'a Elite Academy Darkness
3. Nonian Central High School Naysayers
4. Facsimilie High School Enigma

The Storyline:
A Conference of just teams from Capital East and Capital West - with four schools from the Capital West in the Beta Division and three schools from the Capital East and one from the Capital West in the Alpha Division. Many were surprised by the fact that the Wirr Tsi School for the Gifted Masterminds weren't invited to the Elite Conference - but they don't mind being a big fish in a smaller pond. Standing at 6' 6", Dean Stephens is a massive specimen who can absolutely take a hit and isn't afraid to air it out, returning for his Sophomore season. Everard Gilstand will be his best friend, being a Senior Running Back who can both run and catch the ball, while the defensive side will feature Junior Ryan Liechard, a hard-hitting Strong Safety, and Kieman Jodunest, a rangy Senior Middle Linebacker. Aya K. Jackson High School should be expected to do well in the season, as they bring Senior Quarterback Justin Ingrid, a gunslinger with no fear, and Senior Strong Safety Kim Yeong-Bam, a roaming playmaking safety. Freshman Wide Receiver Kara Victoire, a speedy threat, will be Ingrid's biggest target. South Chromia High School - the only school from the previous Capital West - with Junior Quarterback George Reed, a dual-threat player, and Sophomore Cornerback Lydia Annais, a true ball hawk, will try to punch above their weight, while Wirr Tsi Capital School finally has a Senior Running Back in MIles Suyanghar, an every-down back, and a up-and-coming talent in Freshman Defensive Tackle Lyon Dursten.

As for the Beta Division, it's time for Kynxe High School to shine. With Capital District Academy and Franscesca Larriet-Cortes High School away to the Elite Conference, the Monsoon will be paced by Patrick Osmeiller, a Senior Quarterback who knows how to put the ball in tight windows; they also have Senior Wide Receiver Reed Myler, a possession receiver, and Junior Defensive End Mick Jones, who can really bring the rush to the opposing offensive line. Dre'a Elite Academy will be projected to give them a fight - Sophomore Quarterback Luc Jonas returns with elusive quickness and a surprising arm; Freshman Wide Receiver Carta Jix joins Jonas as a speedster threat, while Sophomore Outside Linebacker Henry Durstminder is the new good coverage linebacker for the Darkness. Nonian Central High School returns Senior Quarterback Pym Murrock as the grizzly veteran who has to do too much for the team, while Middle Linebacker Misha Allison is the Sophomore who roams the field. Rounding out the field is Facsimile High School Enigma, who have a two-headed backfield in Senior Quarterback Fred Derrick and Senior Running Back Edwin Jackson-Jones, the younger brother of one Eilee Jackson-Jones.

The Season

Matchday 1
Dreadnought - Alpha
Aya K. Jackson High School 46–15 Wirr Tsi Capital School
Wirr Tsi School for the Gifted 37–6 South Chromia High School

Dreadnought - Beta
Nonian Central High School 20–10 Facsimile High School
Kynxe High School 68–23 Dre'a Elite Academy

Junstin Ingrind has 358 yards and four touchdowns in the win for the Runners, finding Kara Victorie for 164 of those yards; the Masterminds, on the other hand, throttle the Terror to just 203 yards of total offense as Everard Gillstand shines. In the Beta Division, the Naysayers control the Enigma to just 91 yards of rushing to dominate time of possession, while the Monsoon score eight touchdowns to throttle the Darkness - Reed Myler having three of those scores from Patrick Osmeiller.

Matchday 2
Dreadnought - Alpha
Wirr Tsi Capital School 24–9 South Chromia High School
Aya K. Jackson High School 17–17 Wirr Tsi School for the Gifted (17–20 OT)

Dreadnought - Beta
Facsimile High School 35–6 Dre'a Elite Academy
Nonian Central High School 17–7 Kynxe High School

The Bears' Miles Suyanghar has a notable three-touchdown, 201 yard day as the Bears upset the Terror, while the Masterminds need overtime to escape the Runners, as Kim Yeong-Bam had a career day with an interception return for a touchdown to go with seven tackles. The Naysayers upset the Monsoon as Misha Allison sets a school record with twenty-three tackles and three forced fumbles, while the Enigma run up 239 yards on the ground to take down the Darkness.

Matchday 3
Dreadnought - Alpha
Wirr Tsi School for the Gifted 9–3 Wirr Tsi Capital School
South Chromia High School 20–30 Aya K. Jackson High School

Dreadnought - Beta
Kynxe High School 26–0 Facsimile High School
Dre'a Elite Academy 24–23 Nonian Central High School

In the battle of Wirr Tsi, the Bears play the Masterminds tough defensively, but the Masterminds' Mira Osoph nails all three field goals from beyond forty yards; the Runners win their second game of the year behind a three-touchdown day from Justin Ilgrind. The Monsoon return back to form by holding the Enigma's vaunted rushing attack to just 87 yards in a shutout, while the Darkness come back from thirteen points down with a late throw from Luc Jonas to Carta Jix.

Matchday 4
Facsimile High School 22–17 Aya K. Jackson High School
Nonian Central High School 23–37 Wirr Tsi Capital School
Kynxe High School 43–20 South Chromia High School
Dre'a Elite Academy 3–7 Wirr Tsi School for the Gifted

In the first day of cross-division play, Fred Derrick actually throws a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter for the Enigma to upset the Runners, while the Bears' defense steps up in the second half to take down the Naysayers; the Monsoon hang forty-three on the Terror - Reed Myler getting three more touchdowns - while the Masterminds are held in check by the Darkness, their defense having to do just enough to prevail.

Matchday 5
Wirr Tsi Capital School 10–10 Kynxe High School (16–13 OT)
Aya K. Jackson High School 10–17 Dre'a Elite Academy
Wirr Tsi School for the Gifted 16–0 Facsimile High School
South Chromia High School 17–23 Nonian Central High School

In the best matchup of the day, the Bears shock the Monsoon with a game winning touchdown in overtime from Mils Suyanghar; the Darkness get a late score from Osmeiller to beat the Runners. The Masterminds bottle up the Enigma's running game to put up another shutout, while the Nayayers' Pym Murrock was able to find two scores on the ground to win late against the Terror.

Matchday 6
Aya K. Jackson High School 0–13 Kynxe High School
Wirr Tsi Capital School 17–7 Dre'a Elite Academy
South Chromia High School 40–10 Facsimile High School
Wirr Tsi School for the Gifted 44–0 Nonian Central High School

That's the second shutout in a row for the Masterminds, forcing six turnovers on the Naysayers; the Terror hang forty on the Enigma as George Reed has the best day of his career. The Bears' Lyon Dursten force five tackles for loss in the win over the Darkness, and the Enigma play their style to beat up the Runners.

Matchday 7
Kynxe High School 30–10 Wirr Tsi School for the Gifted
Dre'a Elite Academy 23–7 South Chromia High School
Facsimile High School 16–10 Wirr Tsi Capital School
Nonian Central High School 22–7 Aya K. Jackson High School

The Monsoon stop the rampage of the Masterminds as it's Mick Jones that's the best defensive player on the field, having four sacks on the day; the Darkness throttle the Terror, the Enigma do just enough on the ground to beat the Bears, and the Naysayers' Misha Allison has another good game with nineteen tackles and an interception as Nonian Central bounces back from being shut out 44-0.

Matchday 8
Dreadnought - Alpha
Wirr Tsi Capital School 6–0 Aya K. Jackson High School
South Chromia High School 42–24 Wirr Tsi School for the Gifted

Dreadnought - Beta
Facsimile High School 43–23 Nonian Central High School
Dre'a Elite Academy 3–39 Kynxe High School

The Bears are no longer the worst team in their Division. Miles Suyanghar is running hard, and they know how to take down teams not named Wirr Tsi School for the Gifted. It's a nightmare day for the Masterminds as the Terror upset them - Lydia Annais picking off Dean Stephens not once but three times. The Enigma run for 241 yards in the win over the Naysayers, while the Monsoon never let go of control over the Darkness.

Matchday 9
Dreadnought - Alpha
South Chromia High School 26–16 Wirr Tsi Capital School
Wirr Tsi School for the Gifted 20–0 Aya K. Jackson High School

Dreadnought - Beta
Dre'a Elite Academy 16–17 Facsimile High School
Kynxe High School 20–6 Nonian Central High School

The Masterminds return to form by not letting the Runners past midfield, while the Terror put the Bears back in their place. Kynxe hangs on to their lead over the Enigma - securing the division - while Facsimile do everything they can, but fall short of challenging for the title.

Matchday 10
Dreadnought - Alpha
Wirr Tsi Capital School 0–13 Wirr Tsi School for the Gifted
Aya K. Jackson High School 22–12 South Chromia High School

Dreadnought - Beta
Facsimile High School 27–10 Kynxe High School
Nonian Central High School 13–0 Dre'a Elite Academy

Wirr Tsi School for the Gifted wraps up a season in which they allowed 10.1 points a game - including 72 points in the two losses - meaning they allowed 28 points in the eight wins. The Runners beat the Terror to make sure they aren't the worst team in the division. Despite the Enigma running for over 200 yards once again, the work done by the Monsoon through the season will mean they are still the Champions; Nonian Central ends the season on a high note by shutting out Dre'a Elite Academy.

Final Table

3 Nonian Central High School 10 5 5 170 209 −39
4 Dre'a Elite Academy 10 3 7 122 236 −114
*Aya K. Jackson High School ahead of South Chromia High School due to H2H Result (2-0).

MVP: Wirr Tsi School for the Gifted Senior Middle Linebacker Kiernan Jodunst (183 tackles, 11 sacks, 4 forced fumbles, 3 interceptions, 2 defensive touchdowns)

There wasn't a single game where Jodunst truly stuck out, but there was no doubting the fact that he was the leader of the formidable Wirr Tsi School for the Gifted defense. If the two defensive touchdowns conceded are taken off, they only gave up 87 points in the ten games - and he was the one leading both in play and in calling out the tendencies of the opposition. He's got range, he's got passion, and he knows how to lay out the hits.

Day and night for the Toucans

Alexandroupolis, New Gesem - After week 2, les Toucans de l'université nationale de Saint-Jean-Jacques-sur-Mer have 2 losses in 2 games. Game one was a 6-3 loss at home, and game 2 was a 59-9 loss on the road. While the offense played badly in both games, the defense has been impressive against Constantinople but it was the opposite against Alexandroupolis.

Matchday 1 was played at home at Stade Georges-Étienne Latouche. By the way Georges-Étienne Latouche is a pioneer in Jean-Jacquois football and have elaborated the football program for the Université nationale de Saint-Jean-Jacques-sur-Mer. Two of his grandchilden are currently playing professional football and the third one plays baseball. Gonzalo Zapata-Latouche is a halfback and Alonzo Zapata-Latouche is an inside linebacker, both are playing for Spartiates de Gouin and on the national team. Yolanda Zapata-Latouche is a left handed starting pitcher for Expos de Saint-Jean-Jacques. So, matchday 1 was played at Stade Georges-Étienne Latouche and the weather was cloudy and very windy. Wind was east-west depending on which side of the field you are, and because of the wind, both teams preferred to run the ball rather than throwing it in the air. The Toucans took a 3-0 lead midway in the 2nd quarter on a 22 yards field goal but the Binturongs tied the game late in the 2nd quarter on a 33 yards field goal by Juan Foster. Foster added 3 more points in the 4th quarter on a 27 yards field goal and Constantinople took a 6-3 lead. This is the final score. Both quarterbacks didn't look impressive while running backs stole the show on offense. Kenan Holt rushed for over 200 yards for Constantinople and Sebastian Jakubowski and Raphaëlle Coiteux-Vaugeois ran for just less than 150 yards combined for the Toucans.

The Toucans travelled to Alexandroupolis for matchday 2 and loss 59-9 so let's just forget about this game.

Nova Calanian Football Superleague (NCFS)

The league will still have 10 teams, so it means no expansion teams. However, half of the teams (5) will relocate to other nations in Nova Calania.

Maybe There Is Hope

Postby TJUN-ia » Sun Jan 21, 2024 2:45 pm

The opening weekend of this NSCF campaign certainly did start on an interesting track. Of course, it has to be stressed that we have a long way to go in this regard but so far, things were actually looking OK...but would things continue into Week 2?

The Trent State Feathercaps lost at home but considering all the changes in the offseason, losing only by 6 to UCBP was seen as a bit of an achievement for Jessica Daniels in her first start. Now, the Centrale Pointe Cranes of Tri Ann were in the Horseshoe looking for a battle and it would be one they would regret ever being a part of. They would only manage 3 points all game, via a Bailey Omos FG, as our defence shut the Cranes down all day in a performance that struck new life into the whole program. Daniels managed 3 TDs in this game (2 to Yurilka Zelinskaya, 1 to Samantha Gibson) while Joseph Smith XII arrived onto the scene with a 45-yard Pick-6 off Hiro Giro 12. "Jenkins" would add 3/4 on PATs and 1/1 on FGs to this tally for a convincing 30-3 win that moved the Caps back to 1-1 before the 1st Big Game of the season.

Meanwhile, the Green City Royal Eagles just about beat the Cranes 16-12 in a performance that while unconvincing, was still a win all things considered. Everyone knew that facing UCBP at Jacob F Gleason Field in Belle Haven was going to be a different test entirely...but there was a sense that Paul Abdullahi was ready for a war and my goodness, was he fucking ready. Lionel Blackwood was always going to be a tough player to try and crack and he produced 4 TDs, 2 each to Keith Langston and Spencer Dawson, while Greg Mead went a perfect 4/4 on PATs in a performance that could've sealed this game. But Alisha Obi Michel had other ideas and produced a brilliant performance with 5 TDs on the night (2 to Harrison Jeffers, 1 to Carlton McSwane, 1 to Freeman Namnganda and 1 via QB sneak), while Colleen Fletcher Christian went 4/5 on PATs and 1/2 on FGs. It certainly was a brilliant performance by this team and at 37-28, the Royal Eagles will take a 2-0 record back to the AU.

And with that, Earth Trophy XI is on the horizon. Last time out, it was TSU that won the TJUN-ian prize but GCU will certainly be hoping to get it back. Thing may get a bit hairy from here on out...so just be careful out there, people.

Lava Run Roughshod over Skyhawks for First Win

JOHNSTON MEMORIAL STADIUM, STARAMARA, URRHED ISLAND - Isaga Duhaga and Davis Pill both had over a hundred yards from scrimmage, the Lava totaled up over 250 yards on the ground, and Quarterback John "JJ" Garret, Jr. made no errors as the Lava won their first game of the season in a 57-19 drubbing of the Sadeg State University Skyhawks at Johnston Memorial Stadium in Horizon Conference action.

The Skyhawks had no answer for the two-headed monster that was the Senior Duhaga and the Sophomore Pill. Add in Ingrid Schevchenko being spelled in and catching passes from the backfield, and over 80% of the Lava's 419 yards of offense could be attributed to their running backs. They really set the tone in the Second Quarter, where they forced two fumbles and scored twenty-six points to put the game truly out of reach.

"We really bounced back from the ugly defeat in our first game," announced Davis Pill afterwards, "We knew what we wanted to do this game, and we were able to take advantage of the matchups presented to us by the defense."

"We play our best game when the run sets up the pass," agreed Offensive Coordinator Teisha Wagoner, "JJ was given plenty of time to throw because of the run, Isaga and Davis were on a roll, and it was good to see the team respond."

Not under as much pressure, JJ was able to score two touchdowns through the air and not turn the ball over at all, one of his better games of his young career.

The Lava will hit the road for the first time to the Chromatik mainland to take on their rivals, the Felswyr State University Firehawks.

"We know that they've all the history on their side," stated Middle Linebacker Irina Jones, "But we're hungry, and we don't care if we're supposed to lose - we'll make it tough on them."

ESTEROLOGY
Part 3: By a Fingertip

ROY MEMORIAL STADIUM, CAVSAR, DRAWKLAND - Football can sometimes be a cruel sport - where everything is determined by the smallest of margins, even something as small as a fingertip.

It had been another war of attrition, on the road, against another Drawkian opponent. Cavsar University, fresh off of a drubbing of Staramara Tech, with the knowledge that they had been the better Drawkian university as of late, had the late lead against the visiting Firehawks. Logan Oakley, their Quarterback, had been playing a stellar game - he had a touchdown on the ground, another through the air, and had over 250 yards. The Firehawks' safeties - both Saya Okayato and Édit Éloise - were having some trouble with the tall stature of the Drawkian players.

Estera and the offense had been doing their utmost to hang around. Her pass to Ramsey had been a nice screen that they'd converted; then, two long field goals by Park Jung-Shik had kept the Firehawks within three at halftime. Being shut out in the Third Quarter was very annoying for Nicole, but she'd kept on going - and with Swoosh Moraxis making adjustments on the fly, the Firehawks were starting to get things going in the Fourth Quarter. To the Gladiators' credit, seldom-used Kicker Ted Carroll had nailed the forty-nine yard Field Goal in the beginning of the Fourth Quarter to go up by fourteen.

Nicole found Jen on a pair of third downs to get down to the eighteen of the Gladiators; Sydney did the rest on a strong run up the middle to bring the Firehawks within seven. The two teams then traded drives that ended up in punts, with the Firehawks getting the ball back with three minutes, three time outs, and a chance to tie the game.

Knowing that they wanted this drive to be the last drive in regulation, Felswyr State treated it as a four-minute drive with some urgency, peppering in runs along with sure throws to march the ball down the field. Nicole evaded three would-be sacks, converted on two fourth downs, and had the offense going in rhythm - until a false start by usually reliable Center Matthias Woodpecker put the Firehawks behind the count. Third-and-eight from the Cavsar 17 saw Estera find Amos Pickard for a five-yard out route, the Freshman going out of bounds smartly when he noticed he would not get the yards.

Fourth down and three. Ball at the twelve. Twenty-nine seconds. Take a shot, or get the first down - plenty of time left with a timeout still remaining.

Estera took the snap. The Gladiators sent an extra blitzer - nickel cornerback Mel Kitchens, who got through the protection and made Nicole step up a bit further into the throw than she wanted. The ball sailed a bit, aimed at Jen Hallow going into the left flat. All the Tight End would need to do is get it and step out of bounds, get the first down and a chance for the Firehawks to have some shots in the end zone.

Instead, due to the pressure caused by Kitchens, Estera's throw was a bit high - and Outside Linebacker Damon Morella was able to get one lengthy hand on it to deflect it to the ground.

Game over. The Firehawks had lost to the Gladiators, and Cavsar had swept the Chromatik schools in the first round-robin.

"I didn't react to the blitz correctly," Nicole admitted after the game, "I should've spun the other way to buy myself more time to throw the ball properly, and we'd have had those chances at the end zone. This loss is on me."

"It was a game of inches," admitted Head Coach Naia Curentino, "They were the better team today, but we were right there to cash it in. I like the way that the team has rallied around Nicole so far, and our journey with her is just beginning."

Nicole hated the feeling of letting down her teammates - but many of the veterans were first to tell her that undefeated seasons didn't grow on trees. No, what was important was learning from the losses and making sure to not make the same mistake again. Besides, they had to now prepare for a completely different kind of team - the formidable rushing attack of Staramara Tech University, now with confidence after running roughshod over the Skyhawks.

Nicole was very excited for her first taste of the rivalry between the Firehawks and the Lava. It was going to be weird on the mainland side of things after being on the islander side for four seasons, but it was going to be fun.

"At least he didn't lose the first 4 again": Mixed messages early in the season from HC Craig Kelly

Picking up the pieces after two weeks, there is good news and bad news, each more prevalent depending whether you're one of the drunk fans who wanted (and maybe still want to) kill Craig Kelly, or a normal fan.

Let's start with the positives.

1. At least Craig Kelly didn't lose the first four games again.

He's done it. He managed to not lose the first four and actually win a game. Incredible work.

In all seriousness though, this is a sign of growth. Sure, they lost to Alexandroupolis again in week 1, but this is the same team that came off of winning the division and making a run to the quarterfinals before being stopped by an ever-strong Richardson squad. You can bet that same team is not going to easily go down at home in week 1. The interesting part is how the Jays beat a playoff-worthy Constantinople team at home, but i guess all Constantinoples are bound to fall eventually ;)

2. The Jays have a high ceiling.

In the next 3, the Jays have a home game against UndSJJsM, are home against Green City, and then @ Centrale Pointe. Not to mention, they also are hosting a strong UCBP squad in week 7 and a strong Alexandroupolis team in week 8, both opportunities for trap games. Being honest though, The Brig is a very unforgiving place for foreign competitors, and will provide the edge for the Jays if they show up in force. If they can win those two, I see them using that momentum to sneak out a win at Centrale Point.

Now for the negatives.

1. Craig Kelly is still the HC

the title pretty much describes it. Craig Kelly IS the man who lost 4 to start last season after all, so there is a high likelihood that he fumbles a good core of young players and loses out on playoffs possibly.

2. There is lots of inexperience on the roster

not many on the roster have that experience in high leverage situations, and are likely to crack under pressure in big games. That could impair them from winning 2-3 games, and those 2-3 can decide lots of things here in NSCF.

Either way you look at it. There is no predicting a Blue Jays season, so we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Brooklyn Beck (S2:E3)

Postby Drawkland » Sun Jan 21, 2024 7:18 pm

"The Pregame Complication"

The weekend came around quickly. As Brooklyn predicted, Spencer Harrelson had nothing going on, so he begrudgingly accepted the invitation. It was a mid-afternoon kickoff, so the day’s itinerary went into motion before lunchtime.

“I’ll be picking you up in about an hour,” Brooklyn had texted Spencer.

“What am I supposed to wear?” Spencer asked a couple minutes later.

“Just jeans and whatever. I’ll bring you a jersey.”

“Wonderful.” Despite it being one word through text, Brooklyn could just hear the sarcasm dripping from it.

Brooklyn was kitted out in a classic jersey - a #4 Beck jersey not for the Sadeg Spartans, but for the Sadeg State Skyhawks. She felt it was appropriate given her recent announcement. She grabbed a more recent fit, a Spartans Beck jersey for Spencer to put on top of his hoodie or whatever he was going to be wearing.

She had all of her things ready for the game, lounging on the living room couch until it was time to leave. Her plan was to leave on her own time, get to the stadium a couple hours early so the parking wouldn’t be as hectic, maybe show Spencer the plaza with The Spire outside. The Spire was a large monument within walking distance of Spartan Veteran Stadium. Perhaps the history aspect could appeal to a nerd like Spencer.

Then things got complicated.

“Alright, are we ready to go?” Dustin Beck stepped into the living room, wearing a navy blue polo shirt and khakis. It was a little comical, the former pro quarterback in an outfit you’d expect from a mid level IT worker, but that was enough for him as a ‘Brand Ambassador’ for the Spartans.

“‘We?’” Brooklyn echoed, confused. She knew her dad was going to the game, or rather, “work,” but she assumed they’d be traveling separately.

“Yes, we.” Dustin replied flatly. “I’m taking you all to the game. It’s more efficient than going separately. Plus, I’d like to meet this kid you’re bringing with you.”

“Oh no, dad,” Brooklyn groaned. “It’s not like that. He’s just a classmate. It’s not a big deal.”

“I’m sure you’d like me to think that,” Dustin narrowed his eyes. “Besides, I can get you into the stadium earlier. Give him a nice tour of the facilities, since apparently he ‘doesn’t know ball.’ I’m sure he would find it very informative.”

“You’re going to make this so awkward,” Brooklyn whined. “I’m 19. I shouldn’t have to deal with stuff like this.”

“The fact that you don’t think you need it just proves that you do,” Dustin countered.

“That doesn’t make any sense!”

“It doesn’t matter if it makes sense or not. I have the car keys, and you don’t. So you can either leave with me, or have fun taking the tram downtown.”

“Fine,” Brooklyn huffed, and grabbed her things.

A few minutes later, Brooklyn and Dustin were driving through the neighborhood streets of the North Craggold neighborhood in Sadeg. Brooklyn was in the front seat navigating to Spencer’s house while her dad drove their family SUV.

“Why did you sit shotgun?” Dustin asked while they were waiting at a stoplight. “Wouldn’t you want to sit in the backseat with your … friend?”

“How many times do I have to tell you it’s not like that?” Brooklyn rolled her eyes. “He can handle sitting in the back seat by himself anyway.”

“I just don’t believe this cover story of yours,” Dustin shook his head. “Really? A nerdy classmate that doesn’t know anything about football? Or sports in general? In Sadeg of all places? I don’t believe that at all. I thought we as a country created a culture where that sort of thing is impossible. I get not watching, but not even knowing the basics? Surely he’s at least a baseball stat nerd. Or a band geek, or something. But nothing at all? Brooklyn, if you want to date a guy, you can just be honest. You don’t have to make up some ridiculous narrative to make it seem innocuous. I promise I won’t scare him … that badly.”

“Dad, I’m serious.” Brooklyn folded her arms. “If this was a date, I’d be up front about it. What you’re doing now is probably more annoying anyway.”

“I just wish you’d show a little more honesty,” Dustin sighed. “You can trust me. I want to know what’s going on.”

“I am telling the truth!” Brooklyn insisted.

“Whatever.” Dustin scanned the row of houses they were driving past. “What was the number again? 4135?”

“Yeah, 4135,” Brooklyn replied, looking at her phone to confirm.

“Here we are,” Dustin announced, slowing to a stop in front of the house. It wasn’t lavish like the Beck household, but it wasn’t totally modest. This area of the neighborhood was also quite nice.

Brooklyn sent a message to Spencer to let him know that they had arrived, and he popped out the front door a few moments later. He walked stiffly to the car, and let himself into the backseat.

“Hey Spencer,” Brooklyn said simply once Spencer sat down. “This is my dad, by the way.”

“Nice to meet you, Mr. Beck,” Spencer said almost automatically as he buckled his seatbelt.

“Good to meet you as well.” Dustin put the car back in drive. “Sorry about the change in transportation plans, I just figured it would be more efficient.”

“Well, I’m all for efficiency,” Spencer nodded. “Brooklyn said you work for the team?”

“Indeed I do.” Dustin eyed Spencer in the rearview mirror.

“What do you do there? Something in administration I assume.”

“I’m a Brand Ambassador at the moment. Sort of marketing, sort of business stuff.”

“Neat,” Spencer said dryly. “How long have you been in that position?”

“Just a couple years,” Dustin gave a wry smile. He thought this little dance was amusing. He didn’t like to flaunt himself or his achievements, but he knew that many young men in Drawkland would love to be talking to one of the greatest Drawkian QBs of all time. One of the best of his generation, at the very least.

“So what did you do before that?” Spencer asked, completely innocently. He appeared to be in standard ‘talking to an acquaintance’s parent’ mode, without much of a second thought.

“Well, I’ve been involved with the game for a long time,” Dustin replied vaguely, giving a knowing look to Brooklyn. Brooklyn, meanwhile, was trying her very hardest to not say anything.

“I see,” Spencer nodded absently. “Were you a player, or something?”

“Y-yes,” Dustin said, shooting another look into the rearview mirror. Spencer seemed completely uninterested. Did he really not know?

“Gotcha. I think Brooklyn might’ve mentioned it at some point.” Spencer paused for a moment. “Were you any good at it?”

At this point, Brooklyn had put her hand over her mouth and was shaking slightly, trying to keep herself from laughing.

“Was I … good at playing football?” Dustin repeated the question to himself, trying to contemplate the audacity of that statement. He wasn’t sure he’d ever been asked that. “Well, I played for over twenty years, won three MVPs, a bunch of Star Bowl selections, four rings with three teams … I’d say that’s pretty good.”

“Sounds like a good resumé,” Spencer said without so much as a lilt. He looked at Brooklyn to gauge the exact impressiveness of those accomplishments based on her reaction, only to see her nearly bursting at the seams in what looked like secondhand embarrassment. “Okay, I’m starting to think I may have understated that.”

“Maybe a bit.” Dustin looked at Spencer in the mirror again, saw he was looking at Brooklyn, then turned to look at Brooklyn himself.

Brooklyn met her dad’s gaze, still unable to find any words. She just raised her eyebrows in a silent ‘told ya so.’

“So I assume you used to play for the,” Spencer hesitated to recall the team name, “Spartans. Hence why you were hired as a brand ambassador. I doubt a team with no prior relationship would want to hire you for something like that.”

“Astute observation,” Dustin replied. At least this kid had some amount of sense, right?

“Oh, that reminds me!” Brooklyn finally spoke up. She rummaged through the bag at her feet, pulled out the Spartans jersey, and handed it to Spencer. “Here’s your outfit of the day.”

“Thanks,” Spencer said, unfolding the jersey to inspect it. It was mainly a light goldenrod color, with navy blue and white trim and numbers. The jersey had the #4, and the name “BECK” boldly on the back. “That tracks,” he murmured to himself.

“So, Spencer, do you have any future plans?” Dustin was being polite, but he was also a little curious as to what somebody with no sports interest would do all day. “I assume you’re looking at colleges right now?”

“Yes sir,” Spencer replied. “I’ve actually got a pretty tough decision to make myself. Right now I’m quite interested in biology, but I’ve also been considering nuclear science. It’s making the college choice difficult indeed.”

“Well, surely you’ve got a little time, right?” Dustin suggested. “It’s not like you have to declare a major until you’re a sophomore.”

“True, but my choice in major will determine my choice in school,” Spencer explained. “If I’m gonna do nuclear engineering, I’d want to go to some place like Cemmendy Tech. Biology or chemistry, though, likely Corinth City. Their natural sciences department is top notch.”

“Good basketball teams, too,” Dustin offered. Brooklyn was right, this kid is a nerd.

“Although I did get a full ride offer from Fosters University last week,” Spencer continued, “their science college is second-lowest in the Erudite Conference. So that’s probably going to be my backup if I don’t get good scholarships from my better choices.”

“Think you’ll go for a Masters at some point?”

“Most likely. Obviously hard to tell this early, but I enjoy the tastes of academia that I’ve gotten so far. Grad school is definitely on my radar.”

“I know Sadeg State has some solid graduate research programs in the medical field. Engineering too,” said Dustin. “Not that I know a whole lot about it, but I have some friends who went through that.”

“Uh huh,” Spencer had to withhold a little laughter. Sadeg State wasn’t bad for a public university, but their graduate programs were nothing to write home about in the national rankings. He was trying to be polite, though, so he kept his mouth shut.

“Oh good, we’re almost here.” Brooklyn pointed down the street, where the edge of Spartan Veteran Stadium could be seen.

“Ah, I see now.” Spencer leaned forward to take a look. The clean white exterior of the stadium was very recognizable, especially with the large arch structure stretching over the open top of the bowl. “Yeah, we see this stadium when we drive by on the freeway sometimes. Isn’t the Spire nearby here?”

“Yup, over there.” Brooklyn pointed it out on the left once they pulled up to an intersection where it was visible.

“It doesn’t seem too busy,” Spencer mused, looking at the still-sparse plaza between the Spire and the stadium. “Don’t these games draw a large crowd.”

“We’re early,” Dustin replied flatly. “Besides, it’s lunchtime. In about an hour this place is going to be swarming. Thankfully, I’ll get you guys into the stadium early with me, so you won’t have to wade through all of that.”

Dustin Beck parked the car in the employee lot underneath the stadium, which he assured both Brooklyn and Spencer would be very convenient on the way out. Brooklyn was a little annoyed that she wouldn’t be able to show Spencer the tailgating fun for pregame, or enter the stadium at the iconic main gate, but that ship sailed the moment Dustin made them drive together.

Before they got into the elevator to move to the concourse level, Spencer spotted a restroom, and asked to be excused. As he disappeared through the bathroom door, Dustin turned to Brooklyn.

“Alright, I’m sorry about earlier. I’m just legitimately shocked that somebody could be that clueless about football.” Dustin said with no small amount of amazement in his voice.

“How do you think I felt all semester?!” Brooklyn laughed.

“I guess I was wrong.” Dustin shrugged. “You really are just trying to educate a poor uninitiated soul in the fine arts.”

“Apology accepted.” Brooklyn poked her dad in the chest. “Maybe next time you should just believe the things I tell you.”

“Fair enough.”

With Rowles Looking To Stake His Claim As The Next Great Cold Hill Passer,
Richardson Looks To Re-Assert Dominance In The Big 8

Image
Viktor Rowles looks to pass in an NSCF game

Cold Hill's the boogeyman of this conference. They've got the records most conference championships in the Big 8 - although Richardson has a one-game lead on them for wins overall in conference history. Three NSCF titles to Richardson's one. But under center, their much-anticipated starter still has a lot to prove.

Viktor Rowles was the top recruit coming out of Chromatika in his class, and was a guy who plenty of programs had their eye on even prior to his senior season. Despite the Buffalo fielding a superstar in Benoit Youngblood, he chose to come to Cold Hill and waited his turn - playing in seven games last season and going 6-1 in that span. His only loss? Week ten in Dietrich Stadium against these Governors.

It was a big moment for the then-sophomore. Chris Dale had made it clear that while Youngblood was cleared to play in week 10, with the Everless division already locked up, Rowles had earned the right to face one of the best defenses in college football by going 6-0 prior to that meeting. Unfortunately, things didn't go well. On a whopping 48 pass attempts, Rowles connected with his loaded receiving corps just 24 times for 255 yards, failed to find the end zone, and turned the ball over twice in a 27-12 bludgeoning at the hands of Kasen Harrowitz's defense.

"They don't do anything extremely exotic on the defensive side," said Chris Dale this week, "They're fast with the base nickel defense, but they play hard for their coach, they're sound in their technique, disciplined with their eyes, aggressive when they can be, it's a true clinic of coaching on the back end. The windows to throw are much tighter than in most college games, and you aren't going to have much time to hit your open man. It was a big step up from what he was used to at the time, but I expect Viktor to show the results of his work this offseason on Saturday."

Rowles has been solid through two games - he's tossed 570 yards and three scores with no touchdowns. But he hasn't faced any stiff competition to this point. This week, he's going to be fielding a championship-level defense that will be an excellent litmus test for his development, and teams like BYU and Lebois Santura aren't going to roll over against these Buffalo either. If this young gun has what it takes to continue this line of prolific Cold Hill quarterbacks, we'll find out in the next month.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the line, this defense has come back into its own once again. After a year off - they lost a lot of pieces between Kasper Ulvestad, Gideon Kearse, and others, these guys are ready to rock. Kerron Nicholas at linebacker is the centerpiece of the whole operation. At 6'8" and a monstrous 275 pounds, he's a brick wall against the run and a nightmare to try and throw over, and with strong safety Totte Lindberg and sophomore linebacker Lynn Dairon joining him, this is a lethal back end. Lindberg is - almost indisputably - the best player on this team, a senior who's been a playmaker from day one. While he plays a slight minority of his snaps near the line of scrimmage, he's elite as a back-end safety, and Lynn Dairon adds a solid coverage element to complent Kerron Nicholas's run-first tendencies.

Throw in pass rushers Ojare Kahara and Julian Anneliese, plus big Rocker Jackson on the inside who's looking like a standout there, and no one's going to have adequate time to throw the football, especially when they're coached by an RFL legend in Justin Kearse.

The secondary, though, is where this defense really shines. We've already mentioned Totte Lindberg, but this is deepest group on this team. With both Loyola-Istria and Cold Hill on the schedule, this coaching staff makes a concerted effort to target highly-touted defensive backs, and it's paid dividends. Their cornerback room was so deep, in fact, that former #2 recruit Rodney Knight transferred to safety just to help the team get all of its talent on the field. He's a stud, with burner speed and elite man coverage ability that's a rarity at that position but Packard Goss leads the cornerback room. At 6'7", he's often matched up against tight ends or bigger wideouts, while Banijan junior Munanaire Tembo is the team's top coverage man. Vilde Lauritzen is earning starting reps as a sophomore in a nickel defense, and all the Vanorian rounds out a group of highly recruited backs.

With senior Isaiah Hunter at quarterback, this defense knows they have enough of an offense to keep them in games if they hold up their end of the bargain, and two running backs in Sampson and Merik to break the backs of the opposition if they have a lead. Saturday, they take on the reigning champions of the NSCF, and this team, whether they'll admit it or not, is looking to send one hell of a message going into cross-division play. And at stake is not only a conference championship berth - which Cold Hill has never missed - but the record for most conference wins in Big 8 history. If Cold Hill downs Richardson in Dietrich Stadium, they'll draw even with their rivals, while if they lose, the Governors will take a two game lead, likely too much for them to overcome until next season, if at all.

The cool fall air broke up the murmur of tens of thousands of bodies chattering and taking their seats just before kickoff, and Richardson's quarterback raised his hand before he called out to his team.

"Men!" The players answered to their leader, circling their leader just a moment later, "Listen, and listen good! Coach laid out our team goals! We want this conference, we want the Blue Thunder, and we want a championship! Our slogan this season, earn it! We cut our teeth for a couple weeks, but this is where we earn it! You want history, you want immortality, show it today! It's not about one play, it's not about one guy, go out here, this year, we do what we're supposed to do, we fight as a team, and we win! Only five teams can call themselves conference champions, and only one can stake their claim as the kings of the NSCF!"

The other players began echoing the sentiment as he raised his voice, pointing at the Buffalo sideline to emphasize his point, "We come after these guys, we start our mission right here, and we finish! Finish the game, and we start our championship run!"

"Earn it! Family on me! Family on three!"

"One, two, three!"

The team exclaimed the motto the program had used since Harrowitz took the job, and the special teams guys took their spot. Cold Hill wanted the ball, Richardson always wanted to defer - perfect match.

"Here we come," Isaiah Hunter said, smirking as the ball went into the air for what was likely his last home game against the Buffalo.

UNN: Mountain Eagles claim first win!

The University of Adelsstedt claimed their first ever NSCF win as they shrugged off the scary dinosaur noises from the campus of the Paleontological-Centred Research University in Natanians and Nosts to run out 24-40 victors. Jón Sigurjónsson ran and passed for 2 touchdowns each as the sophomore QB contributed 306 yards of total offense. Despite the strong offensive showing there were some issues on defense, allowing over 300 yards, which defensive coordinator Tilmann Weizmann said was: "Not a good day for us despite what the offense managed, we need to be tighter if we're going to contribute to wins." Regretfully the Moutain Eagles still have not published their full roster, but expect an interesting game against the Silver Coast Stage College Cadets who run a similar triple option offense, meaning the two teams could be closely matched, although the side from South Americanastan have more experience in international play.

GSPN’s College Football Update, part 2: Metro Boomin’, Wants Some More (Points)
Another week in the books, this one bringing some massive scores for NSCF and GCAA matchups, both figuratively and literally.
Big Idea #1: Gesemite football is defensive football (apparently)
When the first week of scores came back from the GCAA, pundits noted a lack of touchdowns, wrote about it in their blogs or talked about it on their podcasts, and all was well. Now with two weeks gone and the majority of GCAA matchups having at least one team with one or fewer scores, we’ve gone beyond a brief paragraph in a writeup and into the territory of “thinkpieces for blogs in need of content. Pretty soon we’ll cross the Rubicon into “taking old fogies off the shelf to talk about this when we need to fill time on daytime sports shows”, but let’s take it one week at a time.

Two unexpected beneficiaries of the GCAA’s dearth of points this week were the two NSCF schools, which experienced a ratings bump. While the Redbirds-Toucans was almost alone in the noon slot on GSPN with only a couple of Gesemite Conference matchups to compete with, the Binturongs’ troubling loss to Columbus, also broadcast on GSPN, managed to outdraw the highly-anticipated Eriksberg-Damascus matchup on GBS.

Big Idea #2: Alexandroupolis gets the first big commit of the season
James Robinson, the eye-catching wide receiver out of East Manchester in suburban Damascus, has verbally committed to Alexandroupolis after conducting his official visit during the Redbirds’ matchup against the Saint-Jean-Jacques-sur-Mur Toucans. Robinson is a four-star recruit, considered a consensus #1 Gesemite wide receiver of the NSCF 30 recruiting class and around #10 overall. Robinson posted to his social media Sunday morning, “So grateful for the opportunity to continue my craft at Alexandroupolis. Thank you to Coach Curt, Nicky, and all the players who made the campus feel like home this weekend.”

Big Idea #3: Eriksberg might be for real
After an embarrassing week 1 loss to Mountain Conference debutants Behring University, Eriksberg bounced back in week 2 with a resounding 29-7 win over their rival Damascus Cougars. Chestnuts quarterback Ryan McCarthy threw for two hundred and forty yards and two touchdowns, and ran a third touchdown in himself. The defending champion Chestnuts were equally dominant on defense, giving up fewer than three hundred total yards. The lone bright spot from an otherwise bleak performance for Damascus was a pick-six from senior defensive back Cade Watson in the third quarter. With the momentum from this win, McCarthy apparently finding his stride, and without the NSCF teams as an obstacle, the road to repeat for Eriksberg looks clearer than ever.

Big Idea #4: Alexandroupolis and Constantinople are not the same
This headline might get this week’s “no kidding” award, but the differences between ‘polis and ‘nople go even deeper than the massive difference in score and results this week against their Boreal Division rivals. Where Constantinople barely managed to defeat Saint-Jean-Jacques-sur-Mur by a field goal in week 1, the Redbirds dominated the Toucans, running up the score in what is sure to be a signature win as the Redbirds seek to repeat their conference title. Meanwhile, Constantinople posted the first loss by either team as they fell to a better-prepared University of Columbus-Prairie side that had an answer for everything the ‘rongs could throw at it.

It took a severe mismatch for Constantinople to even get on the board against UCP in week two, and while Hughes deserves all the credit for getting open and making the grab in the end zone, had the Blue Jays’ defense been firing on all cylinders, the score could easily have been 14-0 or worse. Compare that to the last-second thread-the-needle pass from Sanchez to Morris that put Alexandroupolis over the top of UCP in week one, and you’ll see the difference between the two Gesemite teams clear as day; one shows up in clutch moments, and one does not. Watching these teams play in what may be one of the most hyped Gesemite football matchups of all time in week 3 will be instructive as to what to expect down the stretch of the season, as the gloves come off and the teams must play the likes of Baker Park and Trent State.

Big Idea #5: Speaking of the River Highway Trophy…
It’s going to be massive this year. GSPN has slotted it in the primetime slot for Saturday night; television promotion began during the week two matchups for GCAA, NSCF, and GFL matches. Rumor has it the Reverend Lee Gibbs himself may be in the house, supporting the visiting Redbirds at Ripper Stadium. If Constantinople can pull out a win against their domestic rival, they may reset expectations, while the momentum from an Alexandroupolis win may be enough to take them over the finish line of this season.

GSPN College Football Gameday Week 3 Preview
This week, GSPN College Football Gameday comes to us from the campus of the University of Constantinople, where UC prepares to host the University of Alexandroupolis Redbirds in this year’s edition of the River Highway Rivalry. Despite a cast that distinctly leans Constantinople (Kenny made a name for himself in their student section, and Rex is of course a hall of fame quarterback for the ‘rongs), they make an attempt to appear neutral, and…

You know what, dear reader, I can’t do this. Not to you, and not to the cast of College Football Gameday. I can’t set up what should be a landmark episode, establish the stakes, get you invested, and then disappoint you with the reality, even if that is what the story calls for at this point. You are hopefully somewhat attached to these characters, to Solomon’s gruff grandstanding, Remy’s low-key nerdiness, and Sarah’s full-blooded optimism. Let me not disillusion you by presenting them at their lowest ebb, because then I fear your relationship might not recover. It would be a shame to turn you against them, to make you root for their demise, which would happen if I were to depict in detail the debacle that was the week three episode. Let me instead commit a narrative faux pas by telling, rather than showing, just how bad it was. This way, we can move on together, and your enmity can be with my telling of the story, rather than the story itself. I’m willing to take that hit, because I love these characters, and I want you to love them as well.

Suffice to say the episode was bad. Underprepared and overconfident, the pundits fell apart in describing even the most basic aspects of the ongoing NSCF season, relying on petty squabbles and half-remembered factoids to fill the time. Their analysis of the GCAA games of the week wasn’t much better; by the time they got there, Solomon and Remy were feuding, and each used his time to undermine the other at the expense of good sports journalism. Rex attempted several times to beat the drum of Kenan Holt, but without valid comparisons to other NSCF players, his patter rang hollow, while Sarah spent most of the time studying the desk, looking horrified. Nobody wanted to go to the Monday morning production meeting, yet it is possible there was never a time where the production meeting was needed more.

In the executive conference room in the GSPN office in downtown Alexandria (the executive producers declined several requests to attend remotely), the bigwigs take turns reminding the cast that they are here to provide a service to the network and the people of New Gesem. All of their employment is tied to ratings, the network president says, with HR and corporate counsel off to one side nodding along, and the ratings have already dipped low enough to trigger release clauses in all of their contracts. They’re not being let go, the executive producer continues, not least because of the difficulty of signing new talent mid-season, but they should consider this their warning.

GSPN College Gameday is brought to you by Covenant Motors. Driven by faith.

GSPN’s College Football Update, part 3: There’s No Place Like Home
While it’s a little soon in the new world order to be talking about “firsts”, this week in college football brought us a phenomenon unlikely to be replicated in the near future; in every match involving a GCAA D-I (minus the Gesemite Conference, but, you know) or Gesemite NSCF college football team, the home team won. What does this mean for the state of play? No one knows, but it makes for good trivia.

Big Idea #1: Eriksberg is pretty inconsistent (we’re going to leave it at that)
After all, what else do you call a defending championship team that falls to a debutante at home in week 1, downs a rival in week 2, and then gets blanked by a previously-winless team in week 3? Chestnuts fans are understandably wanting answers, and it must be said that most of them lie on the defensive side of the ball. While Ryan McCarthy was able to overcome the Damascus defense last week, Myonia’s overshifted 46 defense, led by sophomore middle linebacker Harrison Stamper, put on a show, landing the projected first-round GFL draft pick on his back a stunning five times in the first half and holding the offense to fifty total yards in the same time. Stamper, who is deaf, was a feel-good story coming out of high school as a disabled athlete receiving a D-I scholarship, but there was nothing charitable about the way he demolished Eriksberg’s offensive line on snap after snap Saturday afternoon. The Chestnuts face the undefeated West Baighad University Climbers at home next week, while the Bulls travel to Weewpee to take on the Willows.

Big Idea #2: All bets are off in the River Highway Trophy
If you’d said going into this matchup that one Gesemite team would double the score of the other, it would have been a safe bet that Alexandroupolis would be the one demolishing Constantinople. Yet rivalry games are notoriously fickle, and it was the Binturongs who came away with the big win in the home tie of this year’s River Highway Trophy matchup. Kenan Holt once again emerged as a dominant force for this ‘rongs team, playing every down on offense and running for an eye-watering three hundred all-purpose yards and four of the ‘rongs’ seven touchdowns. Juco transfer tight end Sean Baker caught a short pass from Zach Cook to open his account for the Binturongs, while Noah James pushed the pile to score in the third and Cook found slotback Jeff Simmons for one touchdown in garbage time in the fourth quarter.

Meanwhile Alexandroupolis’s defense showed its inexperience, as an injury to LOLB Carl Jones saw Coach Decker look to true freshman Gabriel Gonzales, who made several key mistakes including a pass interference call on third down that kept a crucial drive alive for Constantinople. Fans who doubted Decker’s willingness to go to the transfer portal to reload his defense after last year were vindicated as the Redbirds’ underclassmen underperformed across the board. On offense, former five-star recruit Eric Richardson showed flashes of the dynamic runningback he was last year, burning Constantinople’s secondary for a thirty-three yard TD run, while Francis Baker showed why he has been considered one of the best college wide receivers in New Gesem for the past four years with a touchdown of his own to cap off a two-hundred-yard receiving game. No heroics on the offensive side were enough to bridge the gap, and the Redbirds limped off the field after a sound thrashing by their “younger” brother team.

Big Idea #3: The Heartland looms large
When the University of Alexandroupolis defeated the Baker Park Warriors by a touchdown in last year’s MinCon championship game, it was a victory for the Boreal Division as well as the Redbirds themselves. Intradivisional play in NSCF 30 looks to be competitive, as both Baker Park and Green City already have signature wins under their belt and will look to improve their playoff resume against the Boreal Division. Up first, Constantinople plays Baker Park in a battle of 2-1 teams. The Binturongs won last year’s fixture 40-31, but it would be unwise to count Baker Park out. Meanwhile, Alexandroupolis will open cross-division play against the Centrale Pointe University Cranes. The 0-3 Cranes look like an easy win on paper for the Redbirds, but Alexandroupolis demonstrated this week their ability to drop easy points when it counts.

Big Idea #4: 4* TE Garcia, 4* ATH Scott de-commit from Eriksberg
The Eriksberg Chestnuts lost more than a football game in their 31-0 drubbing by the underdog Myonia Bulls. Four-star tight end Joe Garcia from Constantinople-area Cumberland High School as well as athlete Tyler Scott from Central Community near Weepwee, both decommitted from the Chestnuts. Both had previously committed to Eriksberg during their respective junior seasons, when the ‘nuts were on their way to a national championship. Garcia has previously shown interest in Alexandroupolis, Thebes, and possibly playing overseas, while Scott is scheduled to tour Damascus and Myonia before the season is over.

Big Idea #5: Cavsar falls to Sadeg Stage in intra-Drawk matchup
The Cavsar University Gladiators lost to the Sadeg State University Skyhawks in an intra-Drawkland matchup that took one of the last remaining undefeated NSCF teams off the board. Cavsar will play the University of Constantinople at home in week 12, during out-of-conference play.

GSPN College Football Gameday Week 4 Preview
It’s a sunny Saturday morning in the small town of Behring as the hometown favorite, big-conference debutant Bluejays, whom you may remember from “that time they upset Eriksberg”, prepare to take on the conference-leading juggernaut Damascus Cougars. The Mountain Conference standings are close; the upstart Myonia Bulls pulled out a 26-23 win against the Weepwee Willows in the Thursday night primetime slot, while the Eriksberg Chestnuts have a must-win against undefeated West Baighad later today, after the Behring-Damascus game in the afternoon.

Meanwhile in the Metro, it’s new versus new and old versus old as the undefeated Green Meadows Hawks travel to Summit to take on the Zigs, and the Alexandria Angels host the Thebes Tigers. As befits the midpoint of the season, it’s high time for teams to put up or shut up, and the cast of Gameday is eager to prove their value after last week’s debacle.

Kenny: “Good morning and welcome to this week’s episode of GSPN College Football Gameday, brought to you by Covenant Motors. We’re here live, for the first time ever, from the campus of Behring University as the Bluejays attempt to keep their miracle season alive against the perennial favorite Damascus Cougars. Will the ‘cats catch the ‘jays, or will the newcomers keep their upset streak alive? Nobody knows, but we’re going to guess anyway. Before we get to this local matchup, let’s talk on a multiversal scale really quick. Solomon, what’s your take on the first week of intradivisional play in NSCF?”

Solomon: “Obviously the first few weeks of the NSCF season are pretty easy to get a handle on; it’s a four-team round robin, and if you’re following two teams from the same country, like New Gesem, then you’re basically seeing the same teams twice. Frankly, I’m tired of watching UCP and Saint-Jean-Jacque-Jeremiah-whatever, and I’m ready to see what the Boreal Division has for us. Green City looks strong this year, they’re undefeated in divisional play, but I think UCP might have what it takes to give them their first L. Meanwhile, I hope for Alexandroupolis’s sake that they pull out a win against the Cranes, because after last week, all bets are off.”

Remy: “I agree with Solomon, it’ll be nice to see some different teams, some different playbooks this week. Like Green City, Upper Westside from St. Kanye ran the table against their division, the Sequoia Division in the Celestia Conference, and they’ve got a matchup upfront against a Northern Moravica side that’s vastly underperformed this year, but at the same time, Moravica lost to Loyola-Istria by a point, so I think if that game goes the other way, we’re having a different conversation about intradivisional play in the Celestia Conference. Anyway, talking about the MinCon, I’m pumped to see what Saint-Jean can do against Trent State, because that seems like a super even matchup to me, both teams with one win, third in their divisions, looking to move up in the rankings with a win.”

Sarah: “Not only that, but the teams only get one crack at these opponents every year, unless they make the conference final. If I’m Constantinople, I’m looking to take down Baker Park to make a statement and strengthen my postseason resume. The win against Alexandroupolis might be a fluke, but defeating both of last year’s division champions in two weeks is a statement, and it’s a statement I want to make if I’m Larry Sanchez or I’m Eric Richardson.”

Rex: “I’m excited to see what the Heartland Division boys can do. We’ve seen some great matchups in divisional play, but I think we’re really going to separate the boys from the men in these next four games. If Kenan Holt can perform as well against Baker Park and Green City as he has against Saint-Jean and UCP, I see no reason he shouldn’t be in the conversation for MOP.”

Kenny: “A bold statement there from Rex, but I like the enthusiasm. Let’s see, domestically this week we have Eriksberg against West Baighad, this evening at seven on GBS. What do you think we should expect there, Solomon?”

Solomon: “To be honest with you, Eriksberg has deserved every ounce of criticism they’ve received, but West Baighad are straight-up frauds at two and O. They got lucky against a Myonia team that got stage fright in week one, they had a bye in week two, and they took advantage of the weakest Athens team we’ve seen in years to get their second win in week three. If there’s ever been an undefeated team that deserved to get its first L, it’s definitely the Climbers. Twenty-four to seven, Eriksberg”

Rex: “Couldn’t agree more, and the thing about Ryan McCarthy is he’s a guy who plays well with a chip on his shoulder. Going against Myonia last week, a game they were expected to win, he couldn’t get anything going, but go back another week, against Damascus, a game with everything on the line, and he balls out. Now that we’ve seen Myonia pull it out against Weepwee this week, I think we know the Bulls are legit, and it paints McCarthy in a different light. He needs this game against West Baighad, he knows it, and he’s going to perform. I expect this to be Ryan McCarthy’s best game to date. Chestnuts by at least three touchdowns-say, thirty-five to ten.

Sarah: “I think the early bye interrupted West Baighad’s mojo, and similar to Solomon, I don’t think they so much won in week three as the Wildcats lost. I’m maybe not as high on Eriksberg as Rex is, and I’m definitely not as critical of the Climbers as Solomon, but I’m still taking the Chestnuts in this one. Twenty-one, fourteen to Eriksberg.”

Remy: “As much as I want to be contrarian, I just can’t. Not this time. Y’all said everything already: I’ll go twenty-eight eighteen to Eriksberg.”

Kenny: “Alright, there you have it. Four of our four analysts have Eriksberg over West Baighad this evening. Let’s take a look at the Metro Conference, Alexandria versus Thebes, a battle of historically dominant teams that have struggled a little bit this year. Remy, tell me what you think about this game.”

Remy: “We’ve already identified the Metro as the conference of defense this year, lot of shut-outs, lot of low-scoring games, and I don’t see this one being any different. It’s easy to look at Thebes and say they’ve struggled, but they had the early bye in week two and they got torn apart by a very streaky Griffinsburg team in week one. If you were to ask me what’s the real Thebes team, I would say the team that came out and handled Coleman at home last week is probably what this team should actually look like, week in and week out. If we get that team, I don’t think Alexandria has an answer for their defense. Thebes by a touchdown.”

Rex: “I’m going to agree with Remy, and to prove his point, I’m going to highlight a defensive player. Mark Hayes, junior middle linebacker, defensive captain. He’s got nineteen tackles on the season, four sacks, and what’s amazing is he doesn’t even play every snap. Thebes has a deep rotation on defense, and I think they’re just going to beat the hell out of the Angels’ offense. Fourteen-seven, Thebes.”

Solomon: “I can’t vote against my Tigers. Thebes by a hundred points.”

With the other matchups out of the way, it’s time to address the elephant in the room; the primetime game between Behring and Damascus. The Cougars lead the Mountain Conference at 2-1, their one loss coming to a red-hot Eriksberg Chestnuts team. Their two wins have been decisive, if uninspiring: a 34-0 drubbing of the Athens Wildcats in week one, followed by a 7-0 slugfest against Weepwee last week.

Rex: “All I’m saying is, Damascus has given up zero points this year to teams that don’t have Ryan McCarthy behind center. That is an amazing statistic, and I think it’s going to be enough to put the Cougars over the top against Behring. Behring may have the transitive win here, but this is college football, and a lot of teams have transitive wins over a lot of other teams that don’t mean jack.”

Remy: “To be honest with you, I don’t know a single play out of Damascus’s offensive playbook, because for the most part those boys just have to show up. Anyone can score touchdowns when you’re on the field for forty-five minutes a game. This might be the most exciting Cougars win yet, but it’s still a Cougars win. Damascus by at least ten.”

Brooklyn Beck (S2:E4)

Postby Drawkland » Tue Jan 23, 2024 12:23 am

"The Souvenir Pin"

Dustin Beck took the elevator up to the office level along with Brooklyn Beck and her classmate Spencer Harrelson. He bid them goodbye, as he had extremely important and definitely real work to be doing, leaving Brooklyn and Spencer alone in the nearly empty stadium. At that time, the only people there were the housekeeping staff making sure everything was ready to go, and concessions workers firing up the kitchens.

For over an hour, Brooklyn took Spencer on a couple laps around the stadium, showing him views from the upper deck, sights of downtown Sadeg from the concourse, and even bringing him down to the seats right at field level, though the only people on the field at the time were the grounds crew and some media members.

“So wait, where are we sitting again?” Spencer asked, looking around the bowl from their spot against the wall near the 50 yard line.

“We’ll be at the suite level.” Brooklyn pointed at the row of boxes on the home side of the stadium. “I think we’ll be in the employee friends and family box, which has a little snackbar inside and a couple nice chairs. We’ll probably sit in our actual seats right in front of the box though.”

Eventually, season ticket holders began trickling into the stadium, and life breathed into the venue. The concourse had noise, the seating sections had movement, and the pregame festivities were soon to begin. Brooklyn and Spencer made their way up to the suite level, got their tickets checked, and made it to their box. There were a few other people in there, but they were mostly left alone besides a little small talk. The pair had nice seats in the front row of the box, getting a nice view of the bowl beneath them and a clear sightline for the entire field.

The pregame sequence was soon underway. As it got closer to gametime, Brooklyn started going into detail, explaining nearly everything that was going on. The starting lineup for the Spartans offense and defense were announced on the scoreboard, and Brooklyn tried her best to summarize the role of each position group as they were announced.

“You’re going to have to repeat all of that,” Spencer chuckled. “I can barely hear what you’re saying through all this noise!”

He was right. The Sadeg crowd was cheering loudly for their home squad, especially when young QB Tate Klerks was announced. The noise came to a peak as the Spartans rushed out of the tunnel and onto the field, complete with the pyrotechnics and flashing stadium lights.

“Do they really do all of this every game?” Spencer asked once the noise died down a bit.

“Oh yeah, every home game. It’s just part of the pageantry.” Brooklyn nodded.

“Crazy.”

Though Brooklyn was obviously cheering for the home side, she did have some interest in the visiting Esmereldane Bison. One of the members of the Bison defensive line was the immortal Leo Cross, a legend of the Grid Corps. Brooklyn knew him well from the time she’d spent with her dad and the national team. On the first offensive drive by the Spartans, Leo embarrassed the Spartan left tackle with a bull rush, bowling him over and swallowing the Spartan quarterback for an eight yard loss.

While the crowd groaned, Brooklyn excitedly tapped on Spencer’s arm.

“Look! Okay, see that guy that tackled the quarterback? Okay, first of all, tackling the QB like that, it’s called a sack. The guy that did it was Leo Cross. He’s on the national team, a really cool guy. He’s kind of a monster on the field but he’s so nice.”

“You know him?” Spencer asked, craning his neck to see the replay on the video board.

“Yeah, I know him. He’s been on the national team forever, and when my dad played on the Grid Corps I would visit and meet a bunch of the players, so that’s where we met.”

“Okay, so the Grid Corps is the football one?”

Things progressed like this throughout the game, with Brooklyn live commentating almost everything on the field, explaining all the tactical information she could. Spencer was absorbing most of it. It wasn’t structured very effectively like a class lecture or textbook would be, but he couldn’t deny that Brooklyn was clearly knowledgeable about the concepts and doing a solid job at explaining them in detail when they came up. It was bizarre, really. He hadn’t seen Brooklyn this verbose, well, ever.

The game itself was rather exciting, with plenty of big offensive plays and a decent amount of impressive defensive stops to balance it out. The game was tied at 24 as the clock wound down the third quarter.

“Okay, so here comes the fourth quarter hype up sequence. They’re gonna play this video and song and everybody’s going to start standing up. It’s the last quarter of the game, so this is where it gets really make or break.”

The Bison had the ball at the beginning of the fourth quarter and scored a touchdown. The Spartans responded in their next drive, but a holding call and ill-advised passing play stalled the drive short of the end zone. They kicked the field goal, but now they needed a defensive stop.

During the TV timeout between drives, the video board showed various crowd shots, as it often did. Suddenly, the shot flicked to Brooklyn up in the box. It took a second for her and Spencer to realize, and Brooklyn immediately covered her mouth in surprise. A caption appeared on the board: “BROOKLYN BECK - Sadeg State commit!”

“I can almost guarantee my dad made this happen,” Brooklyn muttered, but she still broke into a smile and waved at the camera. A large portion of the crowd, those who were also Sadeg State fans, started cheering, some even coming to their feet. Brooklyn grabbed the front of her jersey and flicked it, garnering some more cheers, and thankfully the camera moved elsewhere a moment later.

“They were all cheering for you?” Spencer was incredulous, and also thankful that the camera angle kept him mostly obscured from the shot. “You didn’t even do anything.”

“Some people are excited that I decided to go to State,” Brooklyn shrugged. “It’s nice to know that I have some support, I guess.”

The Spartans got their defensive stop, forcing the Bison to punt after just one first down, and now the Sadeg side had six minutes to put the ball in the end zone. Things were looking dire. Though the Spartans managed to edge a couple first downs, they were relying on the running game underneath as the Bison were clamping down in the secondary. The clock was running too fast, and with less than three minutes to go, the Spartans were barely at midfield.

Spencer was half-watching. He found it interesting that now Brooklyn was less occupied with explaining the game and more invested in each play herself. As the ball was snapped each time, he noticed that Brooklyn clenched her hands, and her legs were bouncing like mad. Just like Brooklyn’s thorough tactical rundowns, Spencer found this actually locked-in version of Brooklyn to be almost humorous. It was so far from the bored, aloof girl that he sat next to in his physics lab class.

“We need a chunk play. Come on!” Brooklyn smacked the rail in front of their seats. “We only have one timeout left. There’s no more time to fuck around.”

Thankfully, that chunk play was next on the agenda. One of the Spartan wide receivers, Addison Thorpe, got separation on a slant, and caught the ball in stride. The three-deep safeties had been distracted by deep routes, and Thorpe put on the afterburners to rip down the field.

“ADDY!” Brooklyn yelled, shooting up from her seat and startling Spencer. “YES SIR!!”

Thorpe was shoved out of bounds, but not before he got the ball inside the red zone. There were now just a few ticks over 2 minutes left, and now the Spartans had the ball right outside the 10.

“Okay!” Brooklyn sat back down, pointing at the scoreboard to get Spencer’s attention. “So remember how there was that timeout with two minutes left in the half? The two minute warning? There’s another one here since this is the last quarter. So we’ve got that automatic timeout, plus another actual team timeout left. That’s two times to stop the clock, which isn’t a lot, but should be enough that we can still run the ball if needed.”

“Because the clock doesn’t stop after a run,” Spencer confirmed.

“Yeah. Well, it doesn’t stop after a pass, either,” Brooklyn reminded him, “but it does stop if it’s incomplete, so if the play is unsuccessful at least you don’t burn as much time. Compared to if you run the ball but don’t get any yards, you lose a bunch of time and don't get anything out of it.”

“Right.”

With the two minute warning incoming, the Spartans elected to run and get as many yards as they could underneath since the clock was going to stop regardless. After the break, they ran a quick out, then a draw play which got them to the five yard line, and a first down. That’s when they called their final timeout, now facing goal-to-go and the game on the line.

“Alright, this is the game. No more chances to stop the clock, but there’s 1:32 left, so that should be just enough time to run whatever we need. Hopefully we don’t score too fast because we don’t want to give the Bison enough time to tie the game and send it to overtime.”

“So they’ve got their three chances to score here, right?” Spencer eyed the 1st & Goal mark on the scoreboard.

“Four chances,” Brooklyn corrected. “We’re down by 4 with less than two minutes to go. A field goal doesn’t do anything, and if you don’t score at all the game is over anyway. So there’s zero risk in going for it on fourth down.”

“Of course.” Spencer nodded. He probably could’ve gotten that on his own if he thought for more than a second.

“Alright, here we go!” Brooklyn stood up as the Spartan offense broke the huddle. “Get up, man, this is the game!”

“Huh?” Spencer said, but Brooklyn grabbed him by the arm and pulled him out of his chair. “But there’s nobody in front of us …”

The first play, the Spartans tried a rush but came away with just a yard in the pile. The Bison defense, Leo Cross included, did their best to create a knotted pile, but the Spartan running back got the ball out and back to the line quickly.

“This is the hurry-up offense, the no huddle!” Brooklyn yelled over to Spencer, as the crowd noise was steadily increasing. “There’s no time to waste, and they already went over their plays during the timeout. The QB is just calling them directly so they can get going.”

Seconds later, QB Tate Klerks got the snap. It was a passing play, with a hectic crossing pattern going right through the middle of the end zone. Klerks felt pressure coming and sailed the ball out the back of the end zone.

“Was that on purpose?” Spencer craned his head at the replay. “One of those throwaway things?”

“Yeah, he was running out of time and didn’t want a sack.” Brooklyn leaned forward on the rail. “C’MON KLERKS!”

Though the clock stopped on the incompletion, the Spartans didn’t waste any time getting back to the line. They came out in shotgun, with a running back lined up to the left of Klerks and a hefty offensive line. The snap came in, and both Klerks and the running back veered to the left. It looked like a wide option play for just a moment, until Klerks dug his foot in the turf, spun around, and threw a nearly no-look pass to the receiver Addison Thorpe, who was running a slant from the right side. The pass was off target though, and bounced right off the hands of an unsuspecting Bison linebacker. The crowd gasped, then breathed a sigh of relief.

“Awful play call!” Brooklyn seethed. “God, that’s some circus bullshit my dad always tried to run. I can’t believe that’s still in the playbook. Almost cost us the game trying to be too cute.”

“Why did he throw it to him? There were like 3 defensive guys around him.”

“They were trying to be too tricky.” Brooklyn sighed. “Making it look like a run option then quickly passing, but spinning around to try and catch them even more off guard. We are so unbelievably lucky that wasn’t picked off. Goodness.”

“I’ve never seen you so worked up!” Spencer laughed.

“That stupid call almost lost us the game!” Brooklyn threw her arms forward in exasperation. “I mean we had enough time to just run the ball right up the gut twice. At least you’d have ball security that way.”

“So now’s the last chance, correct?” Spencer asked, not sure why he was still standing. He took a quick glance around the crowd, and realized that there wasn’t a single ass still in a seat. The crowd stood as one, waiting anxiously to see the conclusion.

“Do or die,” Brooklyn confirmed. “Barring a penalty or something.”

The Spartan offense lined up one last time. Tate Klerks had the ball in shotgun and an empty set, with four receivers out wide and one tight end on the line. It was a risky formation with the game on the line, but it forced the Bison defense to spread out.

“They better hope they can contain Leo long enough …” Brooklyn said to herself, but it was drowned out in the stadium din.

Klerks kicked, clapped, and the ball came in. He stood with the ball for a second, but tucked it in immediately after. It was a QB draw. Klerks zoomed forward through the offensive line, with just one linebacker to beat. He shifted his hips, jerked his shoulder, and caused just long enough of a hesitation to get separation. He leapt forward, extending his arm to the goalline. For a moment it appeared he was doomed. Leo Cross had disengaged from his block and came to help the Bison linebacker with the tackle … but the impact of Cross joining the fray actually pushed Klerks forward, getting the nose of the football across the plane right before his knees hit the turf.

For an agonizing moment, the referees jogged forward to confirm what they’d seen. The crowd was in an uproar. The line judge and down judge looked at each other, paused a moment, then raised their arms in unison. Touchdown Spartans. The crowd went into a frenzy, especially Brooklyn, who pounded the rail in front of her with her first.

“LET’S FUCKING GO!” Brooklyn grinned savagely, watching the playback on the video board. “Oh, I am never letting Leo hear the end of that!”

The Bison did have about thirty seconds to play with, but they couldn’t get into field goal range before time expired. The Spartans won the game 31-34, and Brooklyn was in excellent spirits as she explained the impact this game had on the playoff seedings.

“See, there’s only like three weeks left in the regular season, and both these teams are playoff contenders, so this could be a real difference in getting an extra playoff game at home or not. That’s a really big deal, obviously.”

Ten or so minutes after the game finished, Dustin came to the box to pick up Brooklyn and Spencer. They got onto an elevator, but as Dustin punched in the button to take them to the parking garage level, Brooklyn came alongside him and hit the button to the main concourse.

“What’s that for?” Dustin asked.

“We have one more stop,” Brooklyn replied vaguely.

“So, did you enjoy the game?” Dustin asked Spencer after a few moments of awkward silence.

“I think so,” Spencer had a cheeky grin. “I’ll admit that it was a little more interesting than I thought it would be. Brooklyn also did more talking in three hours than I’ve heard her do all semester in class.”

“Hey!”

“Well if she’s awake for her classes, she’s at least got me beat,” Dustin chuckled.

The doors opened on the concourse level, and Brooklyn stepped out, pulling Spencer out with her.

“I’ll meet you guys down there. Don’t want to get mobbed,” Dustin winked, and Brooklyn nodded in agreement as the elevator doors closed again.

“What are we doing here again?” Spencer asked as Brooklyn dragged him through the concourse, wading through the crowd with purpose.

“We’re going to the pro shop. Gotta get something there.”

“I’m not buying anything!” Spencer protested. “I’ve already had my fill of sports for the year.”

“You don’t have to,” Brooklyn insisted. “It’s for me.”

The team store was straight ahead, and Spencer reluctantly followed her in. Brooklyn breezed past the jersey section, the hats, the other apparel, heading for the knickknacks. She arrived at what she was looking for: the wall of souvenir pins. There was a large assortment, all of the different alternate and classic logos, lettermark versions, commemorative pins for past championships and division wins, all sorts. Brooklyn quickly narrowed down her selection, holding them out in her hands.

“Okay, which do you think looks better?” Brooklyn showed the pins to Spencer in succession. One was the classic main Sadeg Spartans logo, a classic hoplite soldier helmet. One was shaped like a football helmet with the same logo. The last one was a simple depiction of Spartan Veteran Stadium itself, with “The Vet, Sadeg” stamped across the bottom.

“What for?” Spencer asked, eyeing each one carefully.

“You’ve seen my room, dude. I have to get something every time I go to a game. I don’t have any of these ones yet.”

“Fair enough,” Spencer craned his neck to look at the details on each one. “These are nice pins. Good weight to them.”

“Sports franchises take our souvenirs seriously.”

“Hmmm … how about the logo one? Good color mix. The helmet one is cool but you can barely see the logo on it from a few feet away. Stadium one is cool, but I think it’d be cooler if it had the Spire on the end of it or something.”

“Not bad,” Brooklyn nodded. “I appreciate the help.”

Brooklyn queued up for the checkout line, bought the pin, and navigated her and Spencer back down to the parking garage with little issue. Dustin was already in the car, looking at his phone to pass the time.

“Got what you wanted?” Dustin asked as Brooklyn and Spencer hopped in. Brooklyn showed him the pin she bought, and Dustin squinted. “Neat. Pretty sure I have like six of those in my office drawer, though.”

“No, those ones are different,” Brooklyn insisted, pointing at the pin. “Look, this one has a golden backing rather than silver. It blends with the logo way better.”

“Whatever, nerd.”

The trio drove back to Craggold with some light conversation, mostly about how the game went. Brooklyn and Dustin had a heated discussion about the goalline play selection that almost cost the Spartans the game, while Spencer sat trying to keep up based on what Brooklyn had told him earlier. Dustin, of course, was a fan of the RPO spin play, as it was one he was fond of in his playing days. Brooklyn felt that nostalgia was not a valid reason to run a dumb play. After a good ten minutes of arguing, they agreed to disagree.

When they arrived back at Spencer’s house, Spencer was very polite, handing back the jersey he borrowed and thanking Dustin (“Mr. Beck”) for the ride and tickets. As Spencer left the car and started trotting up his front walkway, Brooklyn stopped him.

“Wait!” Brooklyn said, quickly opening the car door. “You forgot something.”

“Huh?” Spencer turned, feeling his pockets to make sure he had his keys. “No I didn’t-”

“Here.” Brooklyn held out the little plastic bag from the team store, which had the Spartans pin inside.

“I thought that was yours.”

“I lied.” Brooklyn grinned. “Now put this on your bookbag, you dork. You’ve earned it.”

“Brooklyn, you don’t have to-”

“I insist!” Brooklyn shoved the bag into Spencer’s hands, and turned around before he could react any further. “Bye, see you next semester!”

“T-thanks, I guess,” Spencer stammered. “See you next year.”

Spencer pulled the pin out of the bag as he walked into the house. At least this pin was somewhat unrecognizable if you didn’t know sports logos. Now he was really glad he didn’t tell Brooklyn to get the helmet-logo pin. The football helmet shape would be way too conspicuous. His nerd cred would drain down the tubes instantly!

“Sorry,” Brooklyn said as she got back into the front seat of the car. When Dustin didn’t reply, she looked over at her Dad, who had an odd look on his face. “What?”

“Nothing!” Dustin said, refusing to make eye contact as an almost mischievous grin came across his face. “Nothing at all. Let’s go home.”

“Oh don’t you dare …” Brooklyn growled. “I didn’t mean anything by that. It was just because he has all these nerd pins on his school bookbag, and I-”

“I didn’t say anything!” Dustin raised a hand in mock surrender, but he couldn’t stop himself from laughing. “Not sure what you’re so worked up about.”

“Shut up,” Brooklyn stuck out her tongue. She could feel herself blush, but she tried to ignore that. She meant it when she said it didn’t mean anything out of the ordinary. Really.

HOW!?! BLOODHOUNDS BEAT LEBOIS!?

Is it finally here? Is Autamina regaining hope?

Probably, Autamina beat LeBois Santura by 17, shockingly. The score when the match ended was 37-20. Even though it was a major upset, Autamina is projected to beat Utah State, if they can, they are favorites to win next week after, but could they follow the roots of the Houston Texans 2023-24 season? Starting 0-2, then winning a lot more, Autamina is the Texans of Sherpus.

The Rockets have had a bit of a topsy turvy start to their NSCF, first losing away to Bowerstone while looking very much not like the team that is just two seasons removed from playing for a NSCF Championship. It was not a great performance and there was not many silver linings that could be found from the anemic performance from the team in Anthor, it simply was not good enough in any capacity and the team looked quite disjointed and not at all ready for the start of the season. It is not what any one would have come to expect from this team who had routinely looked at least ready for the season even if they had not won their opening game to start the year and rang a lot of alarm bells in Raynor City about the potential of this being a season that was going to be perhaps one of pain and endurance. The team then got to have their home opener against Trismegistus University and it seemed as if it was a completely different team who took the field as they looked a clear tier above their competition and looked like they might actually give the Raiders of Mar Sara Tech a run for their money in the first leg of the Battle for the Royal Saber in Mar Sara.

Mar Sara for their part have looked as good as advertised through the first two weeks of the season and their quarterback play with their senior Chromatik starter has been quite excellent, carving up Trismegistus away from home to start the game and then hosting Bowerstone and making even more quick work of the team who had torn apart their rivals the week before. The Raiders have had hopes of holding on to the divisional crown this season and then having the chance to get their own back against the Poafmersia schools, who have been a thorn in the side of both Vanorian universities since their entrance into the Zephyr. They had to suffer for multiple years the Rockets being seemingly down at the start of the season and winning the first game of the rivalry series for the season before inexplicably losing a game or two they should have in the latter part of the conference season and seeing their hopes be drowned away at the end of the season in Raynor City when the Rockets had looked at their best and built their way into conference champions once more. That ended last season and the Raiders faithful are in no rush to seeing the return of that all too familiar script.

You could feel the excitement and desperation from the fans that had come to pack Mar Sara as they were singing and chanting all the way leading up to the opening kick off and the Raiders fans were not about to be disappointed. The Raiders have often won the first game of the rivalry series with Raynor City, almost always winning the game at home even though it has often been a close affair. It looked to have been another one of those field goal games when the Rockets scored a touchdown with three minutes and some change left, converting the two point try to pull the game with touching distance at thirty-three to twenty-nine. However as had been the case for the entire game, the Raiders began to chunk away at the Rockets and exposing their lack of defensive cohesion to start the season with a whole new set of starters from last season and put the icing on the cake as they punched in another score with just over a minute to go, freshman star running back Thorbjørn Skår plunging in from the five yard line untouched. It had been a balanced attack as it had been most of the game and the Raiders once more had a definitive win over their rivals.

Now the two sides enter into cross-divisional play, a section of the season that has often been a bit troublesome for the team, especially against the dreaded Mancodas of Poafmersia who seem to have a sort of hex over the two powerhouses from the Empire. They enter in different mindsets and on different trajectories, with the Raiders looking to keep up an unexpected undefeated start to the season and looking like one of the best teams in the NSCF. The Rockets however are looking to get a soft reboot to their season after two losses from their first three and having looked like a team who is not wanting to travel away from the capital city in how differently the team has been at home compared to away from it. As it stands, it is hard to see how the Rockets might be able to recover their season, this does not feel like the team who opened up with two losses only to then win their next eighteen games over two seasons, they lack experience and perhaps a bit of quality compared to previous seasons. The Raiders will be wanting to be seven wins strong coming out of the cross divisional play while the Rockets will probably be looking to have three, preferably four wins to the record afterwards, while five and still within touching distance of Tech would be ideal. However reality is slowly sinking in that this might be a season where they are relegated to missing out on the postseason altogether and if that is the case, the coaches will need to be hitting the recruiting trail hard to right the ship next season.

A Flying Display (Earth Trophy XI)

Postby TJUN-ia » Tue Jan 23, 2024 4:21 pm

Earth Trophy weekend. It is one of the biggest and best weekends of the TJUN-ian sporting calendar when the Trent State Feathercaps and the Green City Royal Eagles collide for TJUN-ian supremacy. When these two teams meet, there is always a story to tell...and this time is no different. GCU was 2-0 and TSU 1-1, but both schools entered this contest after big wins against the rest of the MinDiv and were looking to make a statement of intent against the old enemy. For GCU, who were hosting this game, they were looking to go 3-0 and reclaim that damn Trophy from those NAU peeps. For TSU, they were looking to go to 2-1 on the road and to keep the Trophy in Notts for now. The opening home game for GCU was this rivalry, as Margaret intended, but how did things go when kickoff arrived?

Blowout. Straight up, this wasn't close at all. The TJUN-ian public expected a conflict when instead, we managed a blowout...and the hosts would soar in The Palace. TSU entered this domain knowing things would be tough and to be fair to Jessica Daniels, she did put up a fight with 3 TDs...all of them through Yurilka Zelinskaya as that appeared to be the only path that worked tonight. "Jenkins" went 2/3 on PATs but that would be all TSU could do as GCU ruled the roost and in style at that. Aeryn Anulao and Ariet Odong both managed to bring home pick-6s and even then, Alisha Obi Michel wanted her statement to be made in the first all-female QB Earth Trophy clash. Six touchdowns would certainly do that - 2 each to Harrison Jeffers and Carlton McSwane, 1 each to Freeman Namnganda and Batsogile Lovederia - with Colleen Fletcher Christian going a remarkable 7/8 on PATs and 1/3 on FGs. Tonight belonged to one woman. Tonight belonged to one team. Tonight belonged to Green City, without a shadow of a doubt.

Now, it's on to face the Boreal...all 4 of their teams, one by one. It's these games that are the most important for playoff hopes...and everyone knows it. TSU will hope to recover @ the Université nationale de Saint-Jean-Jacques-sur-Mer Toucans while GCU heads out to Dhemixia to face the Columbus-Prairie Blue Jays. Things are about to be crazy from here on out...so hold on tight!

“Ok come on come on come on,” the lad behind you whispered.

“Shut ittt I’m going as quick as I can!” You shot back, Frenkie was always impatient but he needed to keep his shit together now more than ever.

Fingers fiddling with the lock as you try to feel and hear the pins click open, one finally went but this was just taking too long, had to figure something else out.

“CAR!” Mai hissed out seconds before a pair of headlights swept over the entrance to the stable. The group of four intrepid explorers pressed themselves to the ground, at least it was a warm night so you could wear a black t-shirt.

‘Shit. There’s no way they didn’t see us,’ mind racing now, you’d come so far to get this close and give up now.

“Carmen, we gotta go man, we can come back for him later!”

Even at a time like this you still find time to sigh. Luis just didn’t get it, none of them got it quite like you do. This was their time, the moment to make a mark on history, or even grander, to do something so bold that the name New Cardonia State Thunderhawks would be blazed into NSCF lore. If your own name managed to end up there as a footnote to history, that makes it even sweeter.

A lifetime of hearing your dad, your grandad, your mother, your community rail against the LeBois Santura University Broncos, finally the moment had fallen to you, Carmen Semperserro Electro, to do something about it. So here you were, huddled next to the Stable with three of your best uni mates, trying to pick the lock of the great wooden doors on the eve of the Thunderhawks first NSCF clash with those damn Broncos. This was your chance to steal something very, very important to those Blue Bastards.

“We should get outta here, c’mon guys!”

‘Shut up Mai!’ is what you wanted to say but just before you could spit it out, your actions spoke for you.

Click.

Everyone’s breath caught in their chest for a second, you could hardly believe it. You reached out and gave the tall door a push and as it slowly swung open, you couldn’t help but grin back at the rest of your gang.

“Told ya,” you said with a wink.

One by one your crew slunk into the dark room.

“Where is he? I don’t hear him!” Frenkie said in a panicky voice. ‘Seriously could this kid never control his nerves?’

“He’s probably just further down, shut up let’s get this over with,” you shot back, turning on your flashlight as your group ventured further into the depth.

“Oh god…what’s that smell??” Mai said, half-gagging.

“That, my love…is bronco shit."

Nearby, a horse quietly neighed as it smelled you and your friends.

"And that's who we're here for, their actual bronco mascot."

Cardenao High School League Gameweek Three
Riverstone International School Otters 31-22 Hathathia High School Pirates

Both teams entered this game needing a win to jump start their season and we saw that desperation to taste victory on full display. Maybe a little too much passion as the teams combined for over 100 penalty yards, but that’s high school football for ya! The Riverstone Otters had junior QB Gavin Jaramillo and senior running back Cortney Allen to thank once again, with the quarterback throwing for 3 touchdowns and 250 yards despite posting a 52.8% accuracy rating. It’s fun to note that his yardage thrown is good enough for 3rd highest in the league, Otter fans will be excited to see how he does for the rest of the season. Cortney Allen posted 44 yards on the ground with another 104 in the air and two touchdowns, his first of the season. Stephen Darden had a quiet game after going for 256 all-purpose yards and two scores last week. Defensively, Shawn Denely had a great game, with the linebacker all over the place as he recorded 13 solo tackles, 1 assisted, and two tackles for loss. For the Hatathia Pirates, it was a painful defeat as they actually accrued more yardage than the Otters, 288 passing and 97 rushing yards to 250 and 27, but Stan Aniol Dereschi’s three interceptions sealed their loss. That being said, he also played them into contention thanks to his 288 pass yards and two touchdowns on 70% throwing. Senior Ammon Tart had a decent receiving game, pulling in nine of his 11 targets for 83 yards, but sophomore Kyle Ball outshone him by catching five of nine targets for 78 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore running back Chase Johnson continued to show why he’s such an intriguing dual-threat prospect as he recorded 50 rushing yards and a touchdown with 27 receiving yards by catching four of seven targets, not insane numbers by any means but promising for a 16 year old in his first season as the starter. Senior edge Rhett McPeek had an efficient game, grabbing two sacks, a tackle for loss, three solo tackles, and two more assisted.

Escuela Nacíonal DCPF Footballers 25-36 Academia Cardonia Golden Knights

A huge game between two rivals, this match certainly lived up to it with a flurry of scoring before a trio of field goals from Brayden Cochran put the winners out of reach, despite a late touchdown and two point conversion from La Escuela. The Golden Knights ran it up in the air, posting 269 yards to the Footballers 206, but La Escuela had the edge on the ground with 138 yards compared to the Academy’s 99. For the losers, a lot of blame has to go to junior quarterback Brandon Benson, who barely cracked 200 yards on 66.7% passing and threw two interceptions to one touchdown. The Footballers running back room showed their versatility with junior Wesley Hargrove going for over 100 yards and a touchdown and senior Nick Hollowell catching four of five targets for a game high 94 yards, not to mention snagging 37 yards and a touchdown on the ground too. Senior wide receiver Javarrian Uriarte scored the first touchdown of the game with an incredible effort, making a leaping one handed catch before juking two defenders and taking it 61 yards to the house. On the defensive side of the ball, junior linebacker Seth Webster got it done once again, racking up five solo tackles, five assisted, and a tackle for loss. For the Golden Knights, their quarterback had a much cleaner night as he threw for two touchdowns and 269 yards on nearly 73% throwing. Andrew Kun Wah Lee had a quieter night than expected as the junior only recorded 62 yards on 12 rushes while missing his single receiving target, though he did run for a 2 yard touchdown with 5:36 left in the third. Senior WR Grant Ennis showed his route running pedigree as he sliced the defense apart with a 12.0 yard average on his six receptions and a touchdown, while junior tight end Austin Martinez put up 71 yards on 6/7 receiving and a TD. Defensively,

J.C. Evermore Academy Golden Titans 21-34 Obyedako High Green Dragons

In a game where, much like every other, both teams were needing a win, it was the Obyedako Green Dragons who secured their first wub of the season but it came at a cost. After throwing for just over 100 yards at a 60% clip, freshman physical monster QB Raymund Fitzgerald went down with a sprained knee with 9:53 left in the third quarter and sophomore Wyatt Harmon took over. The improvement was undeniable as the kid played his first snaps of the season to the tune of 119 yards and two touchdowns as he went 7/13 in the air, scoring the teams first passing touchdowns of the season. Junior WR Jamarcus Smith and senior tight end Matt Bailey were the happy recipients of said touchdowns, with both getting over 100 yards while running back Kyle Anderson proved to be very impactful with his four receptions despite only gaining 26 yards. Linebacker Broderick Jenerou had a great game, 13 total tackles and a tackle for loss, one forced fumble, and an interception on two passes defended. For the losing Golden Titans, Junior QB Patrick Massaquoi continued his impressive start to the campaign as he posted just shy of 300 yards and 3 TDs on nearly 61% shooting despite throwing his first two interceptions came at game defining moments. His raw stats are impressive, second highest thrown yardage, and five touchdowns on 71.6% throwing, so there could be a lot to look forward to as the season progresses. Unfortunately for the Titans, their run game was totally shut down as they only posted 56 yards and no touchdowns, though Kyle Anderson did fumble the ball. In the air, WR Jamarcus Smith and TE Matt Bailey had fantastic games, with both players catching six passes for over 100 yards and a touchdown each, not a bad day at the office!

Brøgby Preparatory Academy Miners 48-18 Ficilian Point Raiders

Brøgby rolled into this game as the hottest team in the country and they kept that going with an easy breezy 30 point victory over the Ficilian Point Raiders. Michael Monrovia continued his exceptional campaign as the best dual-threat quarterback in the league, throwing for 236 yards and three touchdowns and he led both teams in rushing, with 73 yards and a 15 yard total. Malik Starcevich made the most of his 11 rushes as he found the endzone twice, with freshman Devin McDuffie adding another with the final score of the game. In the air, senior wideout Elgin Spencer continued his impressive start to the season as he led the team with 79 yards and a touchdown, beating out fellow MVP hopeful junior Dallas Simmons 44 yards and a touchdown. A painful loss for the Raiders who never once threatened to take control of the game as they entered halftime down 24-3. Junior wide receiver Andrew Legnfish hard carried for Ficilian Point, catching five passes for two touchdowns and 88 yards, with his quarterback senior Nico Weston barely crossing 250 yards as he hit Legnfish for his only two TDs of the game. Sophomore linebacker J.B. Smith continued his impressive start to the campaign as he recorded eight solo tackles, one tackle for loss, assisted four tackles, and had a brilliant diving leap to deny an endzone pass as the Raiders trailed 48-11.

Timberline High School Wolves 31-7 Skyview Mountain Academy Fliers

A highly anticipated clash between out of division rivals, this game was tied 7-7 with 2:51 left in the first half, only to end 7-17 in the Timberline Woles favor. An impressive defensive effort shut out the Skyview Mountain Fliers and the wolfpack cruised to an easy dinner. Sophomore quarterback Robbie Stephens turned in his best performance of his young career as he threw three touchdowns and 234 yards on nearly 65% accuracy, and he redeemed an early interception with a ten yard TD run. Miles Sikes continued his 100% catching rate, pulling in all nine of his targets for 110 yards and two touchdowns, and he added a run for 12 yards on top. Freshman wideout Avery Nichols continued his quiet push for Offensive Freshman of the Year as he averaged just under 20 yards on three receptions including one touchdown. On defense for the Wolves, senior safety T.J. Taylor proved once again why he’s one of the best in the business as he intercepted his only target and added eight solo and three assisted tackles. For the losers, really not much to write home about, only 191 total yards on offense. Junior quarterback Peppi Klerkx had perhaps the worst showing of any QB so far this season, throwing 137 yards on 60% accuracy and two interceptions while getting sacked three times. Senior wide receiver/safety combo Dejanian Mentor was the bright spot as he hauled in seven of ten targets for 62 yards and added three solo tackles and a tackle for a loss on defense.
