We bid to host.

Format

Ideal format would be a super simple back to basics 32 team cup. 8 groups of 4, top 2 from each group to a Ro16 single elimination playoff.

But in my experience, any time I have a vaguely workable number of signups, designing a format around that number immediately goes to shit, and it's possible we will get further signups. If we're at 33 to 35ish, we can still do 32 by cutting puppets; if we remain stuck at 31 we can probably coax out a puppet from someone; but if we pass 36 then things will have to be rejigged. Most likely formats after that are 6x6 (top 2 from each group plus top 4 3rd place finishers to the Ro16) or 8x5. Something I want to stress is that, if elected as host, we will close signups the moment a workable number appears, so get your puppets/withdrawals/retaliations in fast to avoid disappointment.

Groups will be single round robin with all games played in Græntfjall.

Scorination

A 32 team tournament does create quite a short run in which to earn RP bonus, but that might not be such a bad idea after the long group stage last time. Variety is good. To compensate, RP bonus will be cranked up high, with something in the region of 4-5 points available each MD. Because this will lead to a high maxpoints, we will use SQIS.

There will be a 100% roster penalty: CR rankings will only be added once a team rosters. Roster bonus itself will not be dazzlingly high, worth no more than 1 MD's RP bonus.

I will award myself the mean RP bonus awarded to teams that have RPed each scorination. (For example, if 20 teams RP on MD1, and they earn an average of 3.2 bonus, I will award myself 3.2 bonus.) I will seek out third party scorinators where possible.

Before the tournament I will run a poll to determine preferred cutoff time, though obviously the ultimate decision will depend on my own availability. Cutoffs will probably be 48 hours, depending slightly on format. The cutoff time will be posted on the thread and will be adhered to with no extensions for anyone.

Roleplay context

Græntfjall has co-hosted 2 World Cups, 2 Cups of Harmony, and 2 Baptisms of Fire, plus some tournaments in basketball, ice hockey, junior football, and handball. We co-hosted CR36. There will be information provided about the stadiums and wider country, and an optional daily prompt to respond to.

In past tournaments I've hosted I've generally stressed interactivity, salience, and good RP etiquette as the main elements I use in assessing RP bonus. Read others' roleplays and rosters, write something that has some bearing on the tournament and Rushmore, and don't godmode (without permission), cheat, or be unsportspersonlike. Despite the high RP bonus, voluminous RPs are not required to earn a good bonus: a solid three paragraph RP may earn as much or more as 2000 words of meandering. I'm not willing to make RP bonuses public but I can publish the daily average (which as mentioned above is what I will be awarding myself, so is probably good practice to disclose).

Important

There is no way I can begin this tournament before the 10th of January. Edit: It occurs to me this may mean the tournament overlaps IFCF cutoff. In that case I may schedule an extended break around the IFCF cutoff date, depending how deep in the tournament we are.

Voting for the hosting rights for Copa Rushmori XLV:

Voting for the hosting of Copa Rushmori 45 is now open. Any user that has signed up for the competition (except for the bidder) is allowed to vote. As with any other previous host bid votings, only one vote will be allowed per user, which means any users who have signed up both master and puppet nations may only vote once.

There is one bid to host the event, which is:

Voters may:

  • Accept the bid proposed by Græntfjall
  • Reject the proposed bid and re-open the bidding process

Voting for Copa Rushmori XLV Hosting Rights will close at 05:00 UTC on Tuesday, January 16th, 2024.

All votes should be sent to Rushmore, by TG only.

In case it affects anyone's vote: with Brannfjord we've passed 32 primary nations so I would probably be running 6x6 with best 3rd placer finishers making the Ro16 etc. as a format.

Voting for the hosting rights for Copa Rushmori XLV:

Voting for the hosting of Copa Rushmori 45 is now closed. A total of 11 votes were received, of which only 9 were counted as valid since two users voted twice (in both cases the first vote sent was voided), and the results were distributed as follows:

Accept the bid proposed by Græntfjall: 7 votes
Reject the proposed bid and re-open the bidding process: 2 votes

Congratulations to Græntfjall, who has been elected as host of the forty-fifth Copa Rushmori!

Timings, numbers, and other organizing responsibilities are now handed over to the newly-elected host.

Thanks V-Dog.

Thanks to those who voted for the bid, I'd like to get things up and running fairly quickly so as mentioned in the bid signups are provisionally closed, at 36, and the thread will follow shortly.

Could I get some feedback on how people would like to handle the overlap with the IFCF deadline? While not everyone submits to IFCF I assume for many that will be a busy time. Would you like me to extend a gap in the tournament around that weekend? Delay the start of the CR until after it? Or carry on regardless? Please let me know, here or by TG/DM.

I will be picking a cutoff time tonight so last chance to vote in the poll.

In my opinion, if you're cutting off every 48 hours, then stick with your plans.

However, I will throw another feather in the cap here: WBC playoffs this week (of course, Rushmori nations as a whole have not done that well. I'll try to carry our regional pressures there!). I wouldn't mind the CR delay until after the IFCF cutoff, but the IFCF wouldn't be the reason. We all have our little things on the forum after all.

With cutoffs every 48 hours, just have the schedule skip next Sunday, imo.

Won't be a problem as the 28th would be a non-scorination day, no?

If it starts tomorrow the group stage would go as following: 21-23-25-27-29.

Don't see that being a problem.

Agreed on this front as the current WBC host. Of course, both you and Cass know that the WBC playoffs are scorinated daily anyway due to obvious reasons - series, series and series can take a lot of time if not scorinated daily.

At least everybody knows that and it's nothing out of ordinary in that competition, so not one to worry over.

Thank you for the feedback. For now I've decided to keep the tournament schedule as is.

Based on the responses to the poll, I determined 0800 UTC was the average of the cluster of most popular choices. This is very late at night for US/LatAm users, morning for Euro users, early evening for SE Asia/AUS users. Because it was (from my perspective) a morning cutoff I've therefore pushed back the schedule to begin on the 23rd to give people time to adjust.

MD1 is 0800 UTC on 23 Jan.

Thanks everyone for participating. I enjoyed reading your RPs and look forward to the next one.

For what it's worth, overall the average RP bonus I gave out was about 78% of the max.
