CAFA Cup 8: To See It -- Signup/Bid Thread

Welcome to the eighth edition of Anaia’s regional association football championship. The CAFA Cup is Anaia’s Regional Championship for Association Football. It is open only to nations in the Anaia Region, provided that they remain a member of the region for the duration of this competition, and that they also do not sign up for any other regional association football cup this cycle.

To sign up for the CAFA Cup, please post in this thread with your roster information.
Sign-ups without a roster will not be accepted, and posting placeholders (i.e. “reserved for roster information”) will be looked at poorly.
If you are posting a roster, it is also recommended to include an RP permissions box. An example of this can be found in the spoiler below:
Code: Select all
RP Permissions Box
If my opponent RPs our match first, I give them permission to:
Godmod scoring events: Y/N
RP Injuries to my players: Y/N
Godmod injuries to my players: Y/N
Hand out yellow cards to my players: Y/N
Hand out red cards to my players: Y/N
Godmod other events: Y/N
I prefer you pick these goalscorers for my side:

Puppet Entries:
If a user signs up with a nation that entered the previous CAFA, they may enter up to two nations, provided they were both in the Anaia region at the time that this post was created and remain for the duration of the tournament. In their signup/roster post, users must indicate their second nation -- typically called a puppet -- as such. Undeclared puppets who do not comply with this rule may have all nations associated with their user removed from the tournament.

Host Bids:
Host bids are encouraged to be posted in this thread. In order to host the tournament, you must be signed up to participate. Prospective hosts should indicate their plans for format, scorinator, RP Bonus, tiebreakers, and any other elements as needed. Approved hosts will take over all operation of the tournament from the CAFA account for the edition they are voted to host, including determining signup deadlines and overall schedule.
The deadline for host bids shall be 72 hours after the first host bid posted by someone who has also submitted a roster, or one week from the time of this post, whichever is later.
The entry deadline shall be set by the host, but shall be no sooner than January 9th 2024 at 20:00 UTC.

Current CAFA Rankings:
The current CAFA rankings are available here.

Please do not post in this thread if you are not a member of the Anaia region or a moderator performing their duties. Otherwise, your post will be considered spam, and may bring moderator action.

Squad for CAFA 8

GOALKEEPERS
## Position Name Age Club
1 G Hein Hélder 22 Cazadores Cathair
22 G Sundial 21 Osarese Marcadia
26 G Metro 26 CF Daineri
Audioslavian goalkeepers tend to be wild-eyed heretics, preaching forbidden sermons from the Gospel According to Saint Get Rid Of It Then?!. Your average Audioslavian goalie is about 6'1 max and more likely to punch crosses to safety rather than risk going for a catch. When the ball's at the other end of the field, Audioslavian keepers can be found strutting around the edge of their area like a peacock, shouting instructions at their strikers as if the speed of sound didn't exist. Hélder was third choice in qualifying, but both Creighton and Curipurinho have pulled out of the squad, leaving the 20 year-old ahead of newcoming Daineri-Audioslavians Sundial (reliable, unspectacular) and Metro (unreliable, spectacular) as backups. Audioslavia is a solid 6/10 for goalkeepers.

Centre Halves
## Position Name Age Club
5 D C Sandy Harkness 32 Cardonia FC
6 D RC Everton Bolding 33 Sabrefell Moths
15 D C Valerién Tibère 30 1830 Cathair
20 D RC Ronan Corver 25 Shamrock Cathair
24 D C Carsten Weber 23 KT Moreazerua
Audioslavian centre halves are tall by local standards (5'10 - 6'2) but in international football are often lacking a bit of power compared to their opposite numbers. Bolding is an exception in terms of power - the wide-set full-back-turned-centre-half may not have the highest leap but boasts a high top speed and is the side's most athletic presence at the back. Audioslavians are 6/10 for centre-halves, which is one of the reasons Savigliane international Valerién Tibère was drafted into the squad the second his former nation dissolved.

Full Backs
## Position Name Age Club
2 D RC Uriah Malcolm 20 1830 Cathair
3 D LC Frey Pelle 29 Raynor City United
21 D R Alex Bocker 22 Cazadores Cathair
23 D LC Jean-Marc-Antoine Vidoqc 22 KT Moreazerua
Audioslavian full-backs are basically wingers that can stay sober for long enough to pay their taxes. Typically a 9/10 position for Audioslavian teams, 18 year-old [n]Uriah Malcom[/b] has burst onto scene recently, capable of playing right centre-back or flashing along the wing, and may be the shortest central defensive option in the tournament at 5'6. Fortunately, he's possibly also the quickest. Pelle is one of two RCU players in the team, and should start on the left side of the defence.

Central Midfielders
## Position Name Age Club
4 M C Gael Coorie 21 CF Daineri
8 M C Gabriel Buvalelli 32 Osarese Marcadia
10 M/F C Helios Roy 32 Raynor City United
14 DM C Oran Gordon 33 1830 Cathair
16 DM C Curtis MacIsaac 23 Shamrock Cathair
18 AM/F C Uriel John 29 KT Ferramendiak
Winfridh will purportedly be playing with a flatter midfield than previous managers, meaning the Defensive Midfield role has given way to some more all-action equivalents. Helios Roy has been listed as a midfielder, playing that position for club side Raynor City United, with CF Daineri midfield up-and-comer Gael Coorie rumoured to be making his debut, playing a little deeper.

Wingers
## Position Name Age Club
7 AM CR Brandon Bruhn 26 Shamrock Cathair
11 M L Marc-Antoine Trigintillion 28 Directus
13 D/M L Juanito Xabregas 24 AC Izotz Zubia
17 AM CR Ronan Buckley 21 AC Izotz Zubiae
Typically a 10/10 position for the Bulls, what with the national team's historical insistence on playing a counter-attacking game. Marc-Antoine Trigintillion, the bald-headed Shamrock winger, is the star here. Also at Shamrock, Brandon Bruhn is a firecracker on the right hand side. At 5'5 and lightly built he can be bullied by opposing full-backs, but his terrier-like resilience and acceleration makes him plainly annoying to play against.

Forwards
## Position Name Age Club
9 F C Kjartan Lúnquerque 20 1830 Cathair
12 F C Aleix Ferrer 24 KT Moreazerua
19 AM/F C Wilhelm Hielscher-Zendagorta 30 Cazadores Cathair
25 F C Jos Zuiderwijk 20 Oljestaden IF
All-action forward Zendagorta is the star name, but teenage Cathair striker Kjartan Lúnquerque, a 6'1 powerhouse (by Audioslavian standards) is rumoured to be getting the nod as the fulcrum of the side's attack.

Style Modifier: -1
Penalties: Roy (placement), Lúnquerque (power)
Corners: Bruhn, Pelle
Free Kicks: Roy (placement), Pelle (cross)

Likely starting lineup: Hélder - Malcom, Bolding, Harkness, Pelle - Trigintillion, Buvalelli, Roy, Coorie, Bruhn - Lúnquerque

Style Modifier: -1

Potted history
  • Audioslavia reached the finals of World Cups 12, 19, 20 and 29, losing all of them and gaining a reputation as a team that chokes.
  • After thirty cycles away, Audioslavia returned to win the Baptism of Fire before World Cup 59, won a regional championship in cycle 60 and then won back-to-back World Cups in cycles 63 and 64. That's the golden generation right there.
  • Things went back to normal after that. The side lost a few more major finals, including World Cups 67, 69 and 76.
  • Recent cycles have seen Audioslavia fall to the midfield in the rankings, failing to qualify for four out of the last five World Cups. That disappointment was been offset by victory in CAFA Cup 3 and Cup of Harmony 83, both in Cycle 91. The side's fortunes have continued to slide since, and at this point football fans have become accustomed to the side being on the fringes of international football.
  • Audioslavia is one of two nations to have won five different major senior titles - BoF, CoH, WC plus two different regional championships. They recently became the only team in history to have recorded 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed finishes in each of the three WCC tournaments, plus regional competition.
  • Recently discovered in the history books: A regional tournament for the now-defunct FIFA region, held before World Cup 28. Audioslavia won this tournament, but do not consider it to be an official regional title unless Nepharans are in the room.

Style of Play
  • Post Football is the name given to Audioslavia's style of play. It's based on the idea that, the less the game resembles football, the more ill at ease your opponents will be. Audioslavia play dirty, sideways and overly cautiously. The addition of Winfridh as manager will curtail this somewhat, with the side expecting to get forward, contrary to their nature.
  • Kontrapuntzeka is another word for Audioslavia's style of play. Literally meaning counter-attacking, Audioslavia's national team are comfortable playing without the ball and charging forward in numbers when they do finally get it. Each player on this team has a deep understanding of how, when and where to attack on the counter. Losing the ball and allowing the Bulls to hit you on the break can be fatal to even the best teams in the multiverse.
  • Audioslavian managers have started trying to get the defenders to pass the ball around the back to entice their opponents forward. Audioslavian defenders hate this almost as much as Audioslavian fans.
  • Our footballers tend to be on the shorter, leaner side, with everyone outside of the goalie, centre forward and centre half topping out at about 5'10.
  • Audioslavian footballers are often tenacious, with the highest levels of stamina you'll see in world football. Audioslavian sides are often capable of playing at a high-tempo for long periods of time, and wins are often through attrition rather than skill.
  • Audioslavian teams are notorious for gamesmanship - the bending of the rules in order to gain an advantage. Players will taunt, feign injury, surround the referee, basically anything if it seems like it'd be beneficial. Audioslavians feel no shame in this. As far as they're concerned, their willingness to go further than the other team is a sign that they're more dedicated than their opponents might be. What might be considered dishonourable behaviour for you might be considered normal in Audioslavia.
  • Audioslavian teams fear losing. It's our greatest weakness and, given how this fear manifests itself in big games, a powerful irony
  • As well as lacking a bit of raw power, Audioslavian footballers often lack technique compared to their foreign counterparts.
  • Above all else though, what Audioslavian national teams often lack is heart. The worse things are going, the worse Audioslavians play. They're the classic bully. When things don't pan out as they expect, they retreat physically and mentally.

The Manager
"It's Winfridh!" Cried the Cathair Herald upon the Daineri-Audioslavian manager leaving the offices of the FFA and giving a nod and a thumbs-up to the assembled press. Affectionately nicknamed 'Opera' on account of his loud, weirdly melodic instructions bellowed from the sidelines to his team-mates. Some casuals even think his full name is 'Opera Winfridh', but his name is simply Winfridh. Like most Daineri footballers and increasingly Audioslavians of Daineri decent, monomymicity is the name of the game. I hope the game isn't 'pronounce this word'.

Formerly a goalkeeper at Daineri club Doubleplusgood, Winfridh became Silexhera FC's first choice goalkeeper following their promotion to the top flight. There, he performed miracles in keeping the side in top division football, coming close to a Globe Cup spot in one season. The side would be relegated in Season 11 of the National League, after which Winfridh would join then-second division CF Daineri, winning promotion as backup keeper before fully entrenching himself into the managerial role he'd already made his own. He presided over the side's initial three-season stay in the top division, and pushed the side back up into the top flight in his second to last season at the club.

Those who have seen CF Daineri play will note that the side aren't the most traditional of Audioslavian football sides. Often with left-field tactics and not afraid to get forward, Winfridh's Audioslavia side might be - whisper it - exciting to watch? Just don't expect them to do much winning.

Home, Away

Home shirt is traditionally worn with white shorts and socks, but if our opponents are wearing that colour then we switch to the same deep red as the shirts. This is what usually ends up happening. Dark green or black shorts have been worn on occasion.

Amahne (Aminey) - Stade sur la Baie (70000) - home to ImageAminey CS (and the Aminey Caspians, Aminey Buffaloes, and Aminey Owls).
The flagship stadium, huge production values, the works. Azure-coloured seating under canvas roofing.

Shemurdar (Schemerdrecht) - Orange Bowl (54000) - home to ImageSchemerdrecht SVV (and the Schemerdrecht Admirals).
More associated perhaps with the Admirals than the SVV, but it's nearly always sold out venue for great crowds in any sport.

Maethoru (Maethoru) - Rikalathen Arena (39000) - home to ImageMaethoru SC (and Mayara Wanderers-Vulpecula).
Close to the KFA's training grounds, at least it has that going for it. Crowds aren't great here.

Ethuweri (Étouille) - Stade Amandine (30000) - home to ImageTanques AOE (and the Etouille Vultures).
Some amazing drone shots over a stadium, a city, and a crowd that knows what makes life fun.

Thelesra (Santa Teresa) - Estádio Fortaleza (29000) - home to ImageMiradela GD (and the Santa Teresa Sabres).
Made to be exactly 1000 seats larger than their rivals' stadium, the Fortaleza is the upper-class stadium.
OR
Thelesra (Santa Teresa) - Estádio Marítimo (28000) - home to ImageBranvon CD.
The working class stadium that is, in all facets, a bit inferior to the Fortaleza. Except the crowds. There's no better stadium for wild crowds.

Monrama (Maynard) - Armskirk Municipal Ground (26000) - home to ImageMaynard AFC.
The unlucky Maynard team have asked the KFA to have their stadium used by the national team - as the only southwestern stadium.

Katahshi (Katashi) - Suzumebachi Stadium (25000) - home to ImageKatashi-Kanatsu.
The biggest stadium in the east, Katahshi deserves a game. The fans will mostly just cheer for the Yoshiman players, though.

Garihnkatar (Greencaster) - Golhampton Grounds (25000) - home to ImageSydberg Olympia.
Garihnkatar never had a big football culture, but that's changed, and the local Olympia have kept pace with the hype. Biggest city in the country, too.

Ehbanna (Aevanna) - Northern Arena (32000) - home to university team 'Aevanna Ecologiske Universitet'.
The KFA wants some games geographically spread across the country, and so the cold, dark, and cold gridiron Northern Arena is on the list.

Alahrenna (Alara) - Spider Stadium (27100) - home to ImageAdvance Alara.
Eastern but not on the island Katahshi's on. Fans are used to seeing a lot of goals - which the Dragonflies don't do.

Seterdahn (Straudum) - Hazel Arena (25400) - home to ImageStraudum VV.
Biggest stadium in the northeast, as far as the mainland goes. Straudum's style matches the NT's style perfectly. Propped up by the massive (rich) IT sector.

Gilibehri (Eaglebury) - Uriagali Field (18000) - home to ImageWSR AFC and Pride of Eaglebury.
Biggest/only stadium on the west coast. Gilibehri has an amazing, flourishing sports culture and it's no longer completely ignored by the other 99% of the country.

We play post-football, a term coined during World Cup 89 to put words to a horrible semifinal between Audioslavia and the Dragonflies, which ended 0-0 after 120 minutes, then all but one penalty was scored in the ensuing series. Post-football means no singing. No cheering. No scoring. Post-football is sideways passes, looking like the same, repetitive movements for minutes on end, but with tiny variations that at some point will get to you. It could be a counterattack, or a shot from distance, or a set piece. Post-football doesn't care if it takes 90 or 120 minutes, or more. Under Juliasterinthen and Davenport, the Ko-orenites earned a reputation as the perfectly positioned, tactical-yet-mean defensive team. Containing, capitalising, exploiting. Patience and countering.

Under Lele Manguele, an era that started just before CAFA 7 in cycle 94, we're breaking with traditions. Still targeted at preventing goals, the team instead tries to retain possession for as long as possible, in small, compact spaces, merging relationism with tenacious defence, for what that's worth and to what extent that's possible. Relations between individual players are now more important than retaining perfect structure. That means that the midfield will forgo most of their roles, and that the defence will break the line to help the passing game.

Image
Numbers 1 to = typically start (but not always, feel free to choose your starters). That's 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, X, and =.
Numbers 1-1= are typically selected as starters or subs (but not always, feel free to select some 23+-ers as subs or starters).
Numbers 20 and over are mostly there as emergency replacements, but can be part of the squad for some games. These are almost always younger players with a lot of promise.

Hello.

As part of the Ranking Taskforce, I have recently been asked questions about the use of weird formats in regional tournaments, and whether the new Ranking system we've put together would impinge on a region's fundamental right to run the weirdest tournament format possible. My sincere answer is that it would not, and even the strangest format would work with the new rankings.

As such, I have posed myself a question. What is the strangest format a regional competition could reasonably use?

I have found my answer.

The Swiss System has had its day. It is time for:

Audioslavia’s bid for Cycle 96’s CAFA Cup

About Audio
Host of four World Cups, four World Grand Prix Championships and two AOCAF Cups. Co-founder of the COCANEFA LigAnaia (2014-2017).
Former WCC President. Creator of The Racing Scorinator, The Idiot Project databases and the Unofficial World Championship.
Former Rank Keeper, current Rank Revolutionary and perpetual Rank Bajin.

RP Bonus
I tend to reward Effort and Editing above all else. Readability is the key, and trimming the fat is as important as the content.

Scorination
SQIS formula. Additive modifiers.
Generally a fairly lax scorination window between 8am and 4pm UTC, with 2 games scorinated every 48 hours in the first stage and one every 24 hours in the second. No prior notice will be given ahead of cutoffs that happen within this time.
I'm looking to get all games scorinated before the BoF finishes, but that all rather depends on how quickly we get to 20+ entrants.
All games involving Audioslavia will be scorinated by a third party.

Tiebreakers
Points, Strength of Opponent, Goal Difference

Format

Okay so I appreciate you've had to put up with 'Audio painstakingly explains technicalities to you' far too fucking much recently so I'm going to try to make the explanation of the system as painless as possible. This system itself is, of course, exactly as painful as I could have possibly made it.

It's a Swiss system. Kind of. For each individual match, a win is worth one point. Draws are worth zero points. Losses are worth negative one points. At the end of the group stage (The Helvetica Scenario™) all teams on more than zero points will progress to a knockout round.

Which knockout round they progress to depends on how many points they attained in The Helvetica Scenario™.

Matchdays 1 and 2
You start off playing an opponent with the inverse seeding to you (EG if you're the 8th highest ranked team, you'll be playing the eighth lowest ranked team). You'll play home and away. These matches will be taking place in your countries, not in Audioslavia.

Matchdays 3 and 4
Your matchup here will be against a team that is similar in the standings to you. If you won both of your first two games, you'll likely be playing a team who won both of theirs. Again, this is home and away. You won't be playing in Audioslavia unless you reach the knockouts.

Matchdays 5 and 6, 7 and 8, 9 and 10
See above. The rudimentary spreadsheet tries to avoid rematches, but they aren't impossible, so you may find you're playing the same team in more than one set of matchdays. Nothing builds a rivalry than being glued to someone during The Helvetica Scenario™.

The Knockouts: Round One
If you finish The Helvetica Scenario™ on 1 point, you'll go through to Round One. Here, you'll play another nation that finished on 1 point. The winner over one leg goes through. These matches will actually take place in Audioslavia.

If you're the highest seeded team (note: this means your pre-tournament ranking) and there are an odd number of teams in this stage, you will receive a bye.

The Knockouts: Round Two
If you finished The Helvetica Scenario™ on 2 points, you'll go through to Round Two. Here, you will either have a bye, face another team that finished on two points, or face a winner of a tie from Round One. Which ever you get depends on your seeding.

The Knockouts: Rounds Three and Above
There could be a lot of knockout rounds. We keep going, with byes awarded to the top seed entering at that stage, until only one team remains.

What would this mean for your Ranking Proposal Audio?
In this competition, only the ten games of The Helvetica Scenario™ and the Final would count for World Ranking points, as only these games fall under the category of 'minimum number of games needed to win the tournament'. Therefore, all teams bar two will play ten 'ranked' games, with two playing eleven.

As a test, a one-off Kirola Cup (Audioslavia's domestic cup) will be scorinated sometime soon under the proposed system. The sheet used to organise this tournament will be made available soon.

Thank you, and I'm sorry.

EDIT: Having taken a spanner to the scorinator, I've run a couple of tests. First, via the Kirola Cup, secondly, with a new system that uses Goal Difference as the second tiebreaker instead of Ranking (Strength of Victory is also here, but I honestly don't know if it works, I haven't given it any attention). You can see a test below that uses completely random invented teams. Under no circumstances would I ever take the top 24 from the New Rankings and do a find-and-replace on various combinations of vowels and consonants to generate Pro-Evo'ed versions of NS team names. No sir-ee.

SEMARLAND NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM, OFFICIAL CAFA CUP 8 SQUAD

NATIONAL STADIUM - Natunolstadion, Jansberg, 86,000

Cortell Carrasco was rumoured to be handed an ultimatum by the SFA following a rather underwhelming World Cup qualification campaign. Whilst hopes weren't necessarily as high given Semarland's low ranking compared to their opponents, Carrasco and co. had hoped for a respectable showing just as much as the very slim chance of cracking the playoffs. Therefore, the SFA are expecting a decent enough return from the upcoming CAFA and Brevity Cup rather than the embarassing turnout at the last WCQs. A decent enough first half with wins over Polar Islandstates and Sarzonia looked to set them up for a decent mid-table finish, but a dismal showing in the second half of qualification, with Carrasco's side failing to pick up a point at all. A handful of players retired - namely goalkeeper Matthias Baxter, striker Johan Larsen and most notably the captain, centre-back Shone Andrews. Andrews' leadership will be missed but midfielder Jamal Barker is a more than suitable replacement, with the Krsthaven midfield general Semarland's most capped player. A couple of players are dropped to form the core of the Brevity Cup squad, such as defender Gael Larsen and midfielder Rameses Kristoffersen, with a new look starting XI starting to form from the ashes of the metaphorical bombsite that was World Cup 95. Added to the squad are two new faces in 2051/52 Premarligaen Team of the Season member Carlos Bergmark of Sporting Solsholm and third top scorer Kyren Yeboah, who has big things ahead of him at just 19 years old.

STAFF:
Manager: Cortell Carrasco, 65
Plucked from Sporting Saint Adrensburg by the SFA, Cortell Carrasco was one of the league's most successful managers over the period of non-IFCF/KPB/CAFA involvement. With just the one league title to his name, some may have thought he wasn't the best choice, but his long-term transformation of SSA was truly remarkable. A talented tactical mind who happens to be a close friend of his predecessor Kadell Stevens - who reportedly nominated him for the job, Carrasco hasn't exactly had the start to life as Semarland manager as he would have liked. Despite a good showing at the last Olympics, Semarland were easily brushed aside by the majority of their albeit higher ranked groupmates in World Cup 95 qualification. Carrasco's skating on thin ice, but there's still embers of confidence from the SFA management who have given him a lifeline to prove himself with the upcoming CAFA 8 as well as the Brevity Cup. Expect attractive football - not as high-pace as Stevens, but still nice enough to watch with a focus on defence as much as attack. Oh, and he's brought his entire SSA backroom with him as well, so if there is someone who is going to enjoy this, it's the SSA fans...

Assistant manager: Devonte Northfield, 49
SSA legend who never really got to make his mark for Semarland internationally - Devonte Northfield was quite unlucky given he was actually half-decent as a player and he had a lot of talent ahead of him. But he made his mark for his club, which led to him getting a job as coach within the youth team - and you know the story. He rose through the staffing ranks the same way he did in the playing ranks and wound up assistant manager to Carrasco after the retirement of his previous assistant Martin Etienne. Developing his tactical mind through Carrasco's mentorship, many were hoping he'd take up the reigns at SSA rather than join the rest of the backroom team, he didn't want to pass up the opportunity to represent his country in the dugout.

First team coaches: Marcos Sevenoaks, 47 and Cyrone Eastwood, 39
Two players (also SSA legends, if you notice the recurring theme) who did get to make their mark for Semarland internationally. Marcos Sevenoaks was a powerful winger with a thunderous left boot and Cyrone Eastwood was a midfielder who was one of those midfielders who did the job and made things tick without everyone else really clocking what they were doing, but being aware...if that makes sense? Anyway, they're not bad coaches - not as good as they were players, mind, but Carrasco trusts them enough to come with him to the big stage. They might not have as much tactical input as Northfield does, but we're sure they'll throw a piece of advice in or too. Their experience as regular-ish internationals, something that Carrasco and Northfield lack, will come in handy too, especially considering none of these players have pulled on the Semarland shirt before.

Goalkeeping coach: Devane Marylebone, 53
The last of the legends (God, anyone would think the SFA were raging SSA ultras or something...) and like Sevenoaks & Eastwood, a pretty decent player for club and country. Might have been too old for the league title win, he played his part as goalkeeping coach and had earned his name in SSA legacy as a player beforehand anyway. We could write loads more waffle about his abilities as a goalkeeping coach, but we won't bore you - he does his job well and will no doubt pass on his experience well.

Fitness coach: Boscoe Baywood, 62
Physio: Maxwell Eirsen, 44
Okay, we can't really call these guys "legends", they never even played professionally, let alone for Semarland. Or SSA for that matter? Unless the 5-a-side league counts. But in seriousness they're good at their job. SSA rarely struggled with injuries during Carrasco's time as manager, and that was thanks to the training regimes and medcial attention of Boscoe Baywood and Maxwell Eirsen respectively. Hopefully Semarland won't struggle with injuries like they used to way back when. We might allow ourselves to get our hopes up...

PLAYERS:
All ages & statistics correct at the beginning of the 2052/53 season
GOALKEEPERS:
#1 - GK - Russell Boakye-Yiadom - Age 22 - FC Jansberg - 14 caps
#12 - GK - Gaetano Jorgensen - Age 28 - Kangemark Sport - 6 caps
#13 - GK - Casper Winter - Age 30 - Molsbik Arkjet - 2 caps
With Matthias Baxter's retirement, Russell Boakye-Yiadom takes the reins as #1. The young shot-stopper has been consistently impressive for FC Jansberg, and whilst his statistics aren't as strong internationally as they are at club level, it can't be denied that he's been impressive enough to obtain the number one shirt. Some key saves in WC95Qs games against the likes of Polar Islandstates allowed Semarland to pick up some of their only points, and there's certainly a bright future ahead of him. Gaetano Jorgensen, a much loved figure at Kangemark Sport, is an adequate backup, as is Molsbik Arkjet veteran Casper Winter, with Jorgensen's strengths lying in his reflexes and distribution whilst Winter specialises in shot stopping and marshalling his defence with ease.

DEFENDERS:
#2 - DR - Karl Kvist (vc) - Age 26 - SK Nasjonale Hauker (PIS) - 24 caps, 3 goals, 4 assists
#3 - DL - Ecuador Sorensen - Age 25 - FC Nuholm - 25 caps, 1 assist
#4 - DC - Kortney Delaware - Age 23 - Eikborg Club - 23 caps, 1 goal
#5 - DC - Pascal Melbourne - Age 24 - FC Nuholm - 23 caps, 1 goal

#18 - DC - Stephen Boakye-Gyan - Age 25 - FC Jansberg - 11 caps
#19 - DR - Tyrique Ritchie - Age 27 - FC Jansberg - 12 caps, 1 assist
#21 - DL - Andre Driscoll-Glennon - Age 28 - FC Kolberg - 16 caps
#22 - DC - Rahim Nallo - Age 21 - Kangemark Sport - 8 caps, 1 goal
Krsthaven fans were probably more hurt by the departure of Karl Kvist to SK Nasjonale Hauker of Polar Islandstates than they were because they failed to qualify for IFCF football this season, which says a lot about Kvist's ability. The full-back will no doubt be a mainstay of the national team for years to come, and it's not hard to see why. He's the only survivor in defence from the likely starting XI - with Ecuador Sorensen taking the #3 shirt and the starting position on the opposite flank after Andre Driscoll-Glennon's injury issues resurfaced. In the heart of defence, Pascal Melbourne and Kortney Delaware have a blossoming partnership that has had some shaky moments, but there's no doubt the talent is there. Delaware is future captain material for club and country after impressing under the tutelage of former national team captain Shone Andrews, whose spot he takes after his retirement. The aforementioned Driscoll-Glennon drops to the bench due to having a knock going into the tournament, whilst Tyrique Ritchie will be itching to add an injection of pace off the bench should the game require it. Stephen Boakye-Gyan was one of the more impressive defenders in the WC95 campaign, as well as one of the best in the league, whilst Rahim Nallo turned down a contract offer from Krsthaven to remain at hometown club Kangemark Sport.

MIDFIELDERS:
#6 - DMC - Byron Mandanda - Ae 22 - FC Jansberg, 27 caps, 1 goal, 3 assists
#7 - AMR - Kyrone Paris - Age 27 - FC Nuholm - 28 caps, 3 goals, 6 assists
#8 - MC - Jamal Barker (c) - Age 27 - Krsthaven - 30 caps, 2 goals, 7 assists
#10 - AMC - Chevone Clarke - Age 25 - FC Nuholm - 25 caps, 5 goals, 12 assists
#11 - AML - D'Jean Hamilton - Age 24 - Pamuk Trunca (MYT) - 27 caps, 5 goals, 12 assists

#14 - MC - Lyrone Eastwood - Age 29 - Sporting Saint Adrensburg - 15 caps, 1 assist
#17 - DMC - Carlos Bergmark - Age 27 - Sporting Solsholm - Uncapped
#20 - AMC - Hakim Masters - Age 28 - Eikborg Club - 17 caps, 2 goals, 5 assists
#23 - MC - Johan Chevron - Age 27 - FC Nuholm - 15 caps, 1 assist
Byron Mandanda leapfrogs Rameses Kristoffersen to take up the #6 shirt, with the tenacious youngster already a much-loved figure in midfield. Partnered by new captain Jamal Barker, himself the definition of a midfield general, there will be no shortage of steel in the centre of the park. Barker is the epitome of a modern #8, a box-to-box midfielder also capable of filling in at #6 or even as a #10, but the latter won't likely be required given the talents of Chevone Clarke and Hakim Masters in that department. The diminutive Clarke's creative talent is unmatched, and flanked by D'Jean Hamilton (who recently moved abroad to Mytanar side Pamuk Trunca) and Kyrone Paris (who has swapped SSA for FC Nuholm) results in a very fun to watch attacking trio, with no shortage of tricks and flicks. Lyrone Eastwood and Johan Chevron struggled for game time in World Cup qualification, and will hope to get more of a chance in the CAFA to show their ability, with the latter also a new addition to FC Nuholm after handing a transfer request at Krsthaven. Carlos Bergmark of Sporting Solsholm is a new face, but after his performances last season landing him in the Team of the Year, it's a deserved callup for Solsholm's all-in-one midfield metronome/defensive protector/set piece specialist.

STRIKERS:
#9 - ST - Loick Sorensen - Age 27 - SK Franz Josef City (PIS) - 21 caps, 12 goals, 1 assist
#15 - ST - Kyren Yeboah - Age 19 - Eikborg Club - Uncapped
#16 - ST - Gennaro Christie - Age 28 - Emberton Hibernians (KRY) - 16 caps, 7 goals
Loick Sorensen is Semarland's leading goalscorer, and has been the Premarligaen's leading goalscorer for the last few years. As you can imagine, FC Jansberg fans were nothing short of heartbroken when he departed for legendary Polarian club SK Franz Josef City this summer. Steel sharpens steel as they say, and despite the Polarian league also just coming back from a gap in UICA/IFCF/etc affiliations, it's a step up in quality of opposition, and the country awaits to see the results of the move as Sorensen approaches his peak. Truly, it's an end of an era, when you consider his direct competitor for all those years, both domestically and internationally, Gennaro Christie, has also moved abroad to a stronger league himself, joining Emberton Hibernians of Krytenia after a poor season for Krsthaven (the club, not Christie). No doubt having the best two strikers the country has produced in recent years playing in a higher league standard will be beneficial for the national team. It's fitting then that the third-top scorer in the league last season, Kyren Yeboah, is granted his first call-up at just 19. All eyes will be on Yeboah as he competes for the Premarligaen Golden Boot this season, but for now, fans are excited to see how he adapts to the international stage, should he get a runout this CAFA.

Last time you heard from Mertagne, we were locked in a terrible conflict with the scourge to the south, Bostopia. Bostopia had enacted a terrible naval blockade on the nation, salted its earth with horrific chemical weapons designed to destroy the Mertagnian soil, and was well within range of bombing Mertagne's capital. Mertagne retaliated with concentrated bombing activity on Bostopia's northern coast, while also mounting a brave attack on a nuclear power station found on Bostopia's southern border. You'll hear more about that this cycle, however, as time has plodded on without us explaining how we got there, as it tends to do.

All you need to know about Mertagne at the time of CAFA 8 is that the fighting has stopped. For now. A ceasefire has been shakily negotiated in the wake of the Emperor's death, but a peace deal is yet to be brokered. The best bit about that is that a bit of hope has returned to the nation, somewhat literally in the form of the nation's new head of State, Brandon Hope.

Mertagne's sports teams have seen increased food and funding now that the worst of the war effort has abated, and team manager Ázëwyn Fëanáro has identified the strengths that the team showcased in the 95th World Cup and has attempted to eliminate some of their weaknesses.

Goalkeeper Rhiannon Fawn has taken up the captaincy for this cycle, as the Starling keeper continues to be a pain for sides that place accuracy over power, as her style sees her diving from side to side to hook out shots that she had no right getting her hands around. Other options exist in the net for teams that might attempt to overpower Fawn, and Pertinax Tikeers is there to act as a wall against blazing volleys from powerful players. If all else fails, Cedric Millard is brought out to unnerve the opposing attack into running out of steam by the time they've managed to reach him with his head full of various mantras and general unpredictability.

The defence consists of a back four that look to intercept the ball in the defending third when out of possession and quickly unleash it further up the field to the midfielders. Karon Murell on the left excels at this, and the centre two of Conwal Ibarborde and Honorio Menez typically play the role of the bully and attempt to hook the ball out from under the opposition's feet. Sabrina Aikman complements the game plan, giving the two centre-backs options on either side to pass the ball out to for Murell or Aikman to begin a pacy counter-attack. If attacking options are slim in the middle of the pitch, Aato Irizarri is available to ensure the defence is effective across the width of the pitch, and Miliav Petremol offers a reliable target to pass the ball back to in the event that the midfield is facing too much pressure in possession.

The midfield continues to be set around Jordan Will, who excels at giving the strikers an opportunity to get behind the ball and smash a shot into the back of the net. Leigh Eyre has a good eye for playing into space, and often provides good options for players such as Stewart Bickley to get a touch close to goal. Bickley is also more than happy to dribble the ball up towards the box, and Ihintz Ackroyd can be found sprinting the length of the pitch as the ball changes hands.

Mertagne's attack is honed around three strikers on the pitch that know themselves well enough to be quite fluid in the attacking third, relying on each other as corners of a triangle looking to pass between each other when in possession, and looking for space to receive the ball from the midfield when out of it. Holly Eveson is among the best at finding that space, and either Burro Curwood or Olaia Charlemagne are good options to continue the attacking pressure, managing to get a good touch on a ball quickly passed into the attacking third or into the box. When it comes to sheer shot placement, Nazer Armenadriz is one of Mertagne's most accurate upcoming prospects, and when Mertagne can't break through the defence, the team relies on Kim Le Maistre to drop wide and wait for the ball to be sent out to her, providing a cross that can catch some teams off guard.

Should you play Mertagne at our decreasingly war-damaged home this cycle, you will be treated to a match in one of the following stadiums:

Brandistock Football Campus*, Brandistock, Bardiche (Capacity: 81,600)
*Called the INDOMITABLE ARENA for sponsorship purposes.
The centre of Mertagne's new 'football campus' located just outside the city of Brandistock, on the shores of Mertagne's Lake Shoda, this purpose built stadium sits adjacent to a complex containing the offices of the CAFA, the FMF, and a new purpose built training facility for the sport's current and future talent. Located in a beautiful green park on the shores of the lake, the stadium's striking architecture means its bowl-shaped profile dominates the landscape.

Box 2 Box Ballstadion, Keers, Plitterland (Capacity, 44,500)
A brand new stadium built on the site of the Former Keers Dock Pitch, the Box 2 Box Ballstadion is unique in that it incorporates a new eco-friendly design that harkens back to the land's heritage as an active port. The stadium is constructed from nearly one thousand shipping containers of various painted designs, surrounded by a recycled metal frame in a modular design to allow for expansion and contraction as necessary. Currently, while the stadium is designed to be dismantlable, the stadium is intended to be permanent feature to the Keers cityscape for the foreseeable future, with the possibility that the stadium in its entirety can be 'rented' and physically shipped to other nations that lack national infrastructure to host their own tournaments. The stadium's proximity to Mertagne's largest shipping port at Keers facilitates this easily, with marketing material claiming the entire stadium can be dismantled and placed on a single supercontainer ship within a fortnight.

Vilwandiese Nasionale Sokkerspan
Vilwandian National Football Team
CAFA 8 - Roster and information

Vilwandia's first full cycle as a national team has taken them to many highs, rising to 131st in the world rankings in just two tournaments. Now, CAFA comes calling once again, and the White Stars look in a better position than before to rise and compete with their regionmates.

Country Name: Vilwandia
Trigramme: VWD
Nicknames: Soccer Swans, White Stars, Vilwandiese, Blou et Wits

4-3-3 Formation, standard heavy-pressing attack. Looks to pile pressure on opponents and hit them hard on mistakes. Vilwandian players tend to have high-ish levels of stamina but will often have to resort to basic looking football to utilise this.
Style Modifier: +5

Starting XI

GK: Ade Petersen (Captain, 33, Elsmont Rovers)
LB: Marick Opperman (27, Swansburg United)
CB: Mia Van Vuuren (19, Mid-Capital, SYL)
CB: Hansie Smuts (29, Dreport Athletic)
RB: Brunelda De Velt (22, Industria Reds FC)
CM: Blake Goldberg (24, Royal Yandopolis)
CM: Adriaan Brown (25, Royal Yandopolis)
CM: Piet Heisen (28, Royal Yandopolis)
LW: Christien Vermaak (24, Betham FC, SYL)
ST: Jerome Sibanda (20, Dreport Athletic
RW: Marieke Rautenbach (25, Elsmont Rovers)

In essence, this is the same Vilwandian team you're used to seeing. Ade Petersen, though some may call him shaky, maintains his presence over the squad, and now becomes the only starting XI player over the age of 29. In front of him is his reliable back four, though it is now used to supply counterattacks should the ball be won in Vilwandia's third. Mia Van Vuuren of Sylestone's Mid-Capital joins the starting lineup, one of two changes to the established order, as Unys MacLean makes way for her.

In midfield, the ever reliable trio of Goldberg, Brown, and Heisen remain. The three of them are incredibly close from their time at Royal Yandopolis, and their near-miss title push has only seen these three grow closer. They show communication unlike any other on the Vilwandian roster, and are a force to be reckoned with both sitting back and going forwards.

Finally, the front three sees Marieke Rautenbach join Sibanda and Vermaak to produce a fast attack and score plenty of goals. Rautenbach adds a layer of setup that the attack lacks in and of itself, formerly just sitting and waiting to pick off weak positions unless they marched up the pitch themselves. Expect her to set up many crosses for the headstrong Sibanda to thunder into the net.

Substitutes:
GK: Stefan Collins (20, Eteksiville FC)
GK: Luan Banard (33, Sparta Vilwandia)
DF: Rudi Booysens (28, Eteksiville FC)
DF: Leeto Clark (28, Industria Reds)
DF: Kesiah Goliath (20, Kofologa White Star)
MF: Gerhard Isaac (23, Kleburgh United)
MF: Violette Plaatjies (30, Industria Reds FC)
MF: Liana Mulder (22, Intakulu FC)
MF: Karl Mlambo (21, Elsmont Rovers)
FW: André Liebenberg (31, Elsmont Rovers)
FW: Frederich Katz (22, Buzena United)
FW: Zoey Jacobs (18, Vista Athletics Club)

Head Coach: Zander Vorster

Home Stadium
In the event that the tournament requires Vilwandia to play at home, this time around we shall be welcoming teams to the capital and Vilwandia's largest city, Eteksiville.
Eteksiville is a very new city, being constructed to house the capital and encourage those from different nations and ethnicities to intermingle. As such, it is a very diverse and modernised city compared to the rest of the country, featuring skyscrapers and the famous street leading to the Vilwandian parliament. Eteksiville is famous culturally for the amount of small coffee shops and teahouses that line countless streets, and also for its art galleries and contemporary sculptures.

The stadium itself is the recently-built Stadium of Nations, which boasts a seating capacity of 41,000. Therefore, it is the biggest stadium in Vilwandia by far. New metro and bus routes have been created to the stadium, which is situated outside of the centre of Eteksiville, and there is a large area outside the ground for fans to interact with one another. Typically, Vilwandian fans are loud but friendly, with patriotic and folk songs the norm for chanting. The home fans won't typically fight other fans, but some teams may bring fans that force it in their eyes.

The Aleirave Football Association
Baptism of Fire LXXVIII Champions
Roster for CAFA Cup VIII
Image

OOC: All players in blue are ethnically Klysevian, all players in red are native Aleiravan.

The island nation of Aleirave is a rather small one, with a population of barely 50 thousand, located by a sea they know as the Retakono Me'a, or the sea of mystery. The only islands that were anywhere near them seemed to sink under the sea a couple years back, leaving them as the most isolated nation in the region of Anaia.

The nation of Aleirave was originally founded by Fyodor Tereyev, who was a puteshestvennik (or "traveller") from Klysevia, about 350 years ago. His descendants ruled the island up until the year 2023, when Alexandr Tereyev was shot and killed by a lone gunman in a peaceful protest. Since then, the island has been ruled as an Special Administrative Unit of Eshialand, effectively acting as its own democratic nation within a nation.

...that happened.

The Seagulls had their worst World Cup Qualifying since their debut last cycle, with the only thing of note happening being their mainlander rivals winning their group and qualifying while they got stuck in an abysmal 6th.

Haulafo Paka'ula decided that enough was enough, and 2029 would be the year they were done playing second fiddle to Kenny Morgan and the Eshians, and it would all begin right here in the CAFA. Their past couple years in this competition had been less than ideal, but they'd recovered from rough patches before and they could do it again.

Nickname: the Seagulls
Trigram: ALR

First international: Audioslavia 4-0 Aleirave (CAFA II)
First win: Aleirave 6-3 Space Laser Dinosaur Robot Pirate Land (CAFA III)
Best win: Aleirave 6-0 Unpleasant (BoF LXXVIII)
Worst loss: Audioslavia 4-0 Aleirave (CAFA II)
Most goals for: Aleirave 7–2 The Cannaland Islands (WCQ XCIII)
Most goals against: Eraman 8-5 Aleirave* (WCQ XCI)
Highest-scoring match: Eraman 8-5 Aleirave* (WCQ XCI)

*Recent updates to the Idiot Project database brought this previously-forgotten result to the AFA's attention, which not only sets multiple records for the Seagulls, but makes them the first team in World Cup history to lose a match 5 goals to 8, making it a scorigami.

Image

Manager: Haulafo PAKA'ULA (M, 58)
Some fans have a lot of doubt in Haulafo Paka'ula at this point, but the team has none. He's the original architect of this team and a father to the family they've made together. He's embraced the Aleiravan spirit of quick, agile football, where positions don't really matter so much as making everybody mesh together as a single unit. While in the past he may have doubted himself to the point of resigning before 2027's World Cup Qualifying, he's back in business and ready to prove to the world that this island really can be among the best.

Assistant Manager: Ivan SHAKAROV (M, 63)
When Haulafo Paka'ula resigned, it was Ivan Shakarov who stepped up to fill the void, and results-wise, he did a pretty good job of it, leading them to a 6-3-1 first half before Haulafo took the reins back. While Manager Paka'ula may not have wanted to call him back, there was no denying that he could be the missing link to make this good team a great one, so he gave him a second change to manage the team, albeit in an assisting capacity. While he may not have nearly as much experience at the international level as Paka'ula does, he's made waves before, and he can make waves again, and hopefully can bring the absolute best out of this team.

The history of the Pyazhnayan national team has been marked by a few ups, a couple of downs and a lot of flatness. The fact they managed to reach the final of two consecutive CAFAs is a sign that the team has a lot of quality, but the fact that they lost both of them also signals that there was more work to be done.

Image
Aleksandr Zavrashin - 47
Aleksandr Zavrashin has managed to cement his position as Pyazhnayan national coach after two CAFA final appearances and respectable WC qualifying campaigns. He is a proponent of a flexible 4-4-2 formation and an offensive style to surprise the opposing teams!

KRYTENIA 2316 CAFA CUP SQUAD
Modifier: +1.5

Image
Beginning their football journey way back in the second Baptism of Fire competition, Krytenia are one of the oldest national teams still competing in international football. With five World Cups hosted, as well as a smattering of AOCAFs, Cups of Harmony, Baptism of Fires, and even a CAFA Cup, they also have a deserved reputation for organising top-level football competitions. What they don't have, though, is a reputation for winning. They are yet to win a World Cup; in fact, they have only reached one final, losing to Aguazul in World Cup 58. Five semi-final defeats are what set the tone for the Dragons – indeed, losing in the semis of a major competition is known as the “Krytenian Curse”. That said, there is silverware in their cabinet. Having created the AOCAF Cup, Krytenia eventually won the fifty-second iteration of the competition; more recently, they won Cup of Harmony 78 and nearly added a second two cycles later, losing to fellow co-hosts Græntfjell on home soil. A third major trophy took a while to come, but with victory in the sixth CAFA Cup the Krytenian team joined the small band of nations who have won two different regional competitions.

They may have a reputation as the multiverse's nearly men, but never let yourself be deluded that the Krytenians are defeatist. Even though they may come up short, it's a very rare thing to see a Dragons team simply give up. Be aware that when the sky blue shirts are on the field, you will be in for a tough game, and victory will always be hard-earned.

Image
Manager – Tanner MacROBB (AUD), Age 49
Well, here's a thing. After another disappointing campaign, and with BXE leaving the KFA's hierarchy for parts unknown, young Tommy Warren found himself out of a job. Still, it's not all bad for the former national team boss, as a job became available for him at Mercia Bromham. The reason for this? The suits have decided to go into a new direction, and have paid the Swann family altogether far too much money to install Tanner MacRobb as the new boss of the Dragons. Having taken Foxchester to the promised land before being poached by the Midlanders, a mediocre season at the Cygnus didn't manage to put off the KFA board, and MacRobb now becomes the first full-blooded Audioslavian to take charge of the national team. That said, he's lived in Krytenia since he was a teenager cutting his teeth at Caledon Simpson, so he's more “us” than “them”. MacRobb has a reputation for being a hard taskmaster to players and fourth officials alike; expect the technical area to be...busy.

Assistant Manager – Ryan MILLER, Age 47
With a new manager, comes a new assistant. Miller is very much the yin to MacRobb's yang. Both players had distinguished careers as players in Simpson – without managing to pick up any international caps – and continued their work as the management team at Foxchester. Miller jokingly claimed last season's underperformance last season was due to Mercia breaking up the duo by being “too stingy to buy out two contracts”. The fact that the Foxes stayed up with Miller alongside Nathan Miles adds a bit of credence to those comments.

Goalkeeping Coach – Aaron SHEPHERD, Age 56
Defensive Coach – Gavin HEALEY, Age 42
Offensive Coach – Scott FELDMAN, Age 46
Physiotherapist – Julian GRANT, Age 46

Image
Image

Amanda BACH
Age: 29
Position: Goalkeeper
Club: Cardonia FC (CAD)

Given Krytenia's non-segregated approach to football and the nation's propensity for producing talented goalkeepers, it's perhaps surprising that Bach is the first woman called up to the national side. The Cardonia stopper seems to be made up entirely of limbs; her former teammates at Caversham steered into this skid by nicknaming her “The Black Widow” - after the spider, before anyone asks.

Image

Mark MAROSIC
Age: 27
Position: Goalkeeper
Club: Casuals Osteria

Arguably the safest pair of hands in the country, Marosic has been developing nicely at Coalfields. Perhaps still lacks a bit of agility, which is what's keeping Bach ahead of him in the pecking order...for now, at least.

Image

James BOGDANOVIC
Age: 28
Position: Goalkeeper
Club: Foxchester Rovers

One from the James Orwell playbook, Bogdanovic seems happier with the ball at his feet rather than in his hands. Don't be fooled, though, as he's still a reliable shot-stopper. That's what convinced Foxchester Rovers to sign him for their first-ever assault on the O-League Premier, anyway – and it seemed to work, as his heroics kept the Foxes up.

Image
Image

Cameron McKEOWN
Age: 21
Position: Right wing-back
Club: Caledon Simpson

He might look about eleven, but inside that youthful shell is the mind of a veteran. His ability to police the right flank proved very useful in helping Caledon to the O-League title.

Image

Seán Ó LAOGHAIRE
Age: 26
Position: Left wing-back
Club: Emberton Hibernians

His no-nonsense style may not have trucked with BXE or Tommy Warren, but it's just up MacRobb's street. Exactly the kind of full-back (or wing-back) required to “absolutely not” an opposing winger.

Image

Leon JONES
VICE-CAPTAIN
Age: 28
Position: Centre-back
Club: Avondale City (SYL)

Coming through the ranks at the Southern Arena at such a young age is no mean feat. Jones, though, looks like the real deal, and that earned him a high-profile move to Avondale. Excellent read of the game and metronomic timing in the tackle. With Foster and Sanderson alongside, the Krytenian back three might just think strikers into oblivion.

Image

Geno FOSTER
Age: 26
Position: Centre-back
Club: Ashton Olympic

Impressed in Krytenia's run to the Under-18 World Cup semis, before knuckling down to improve his weak point – positioning – in Ashton. Imperious In the air, intelligent on the ground – it's like Robert Gorman never left.

Image

Ian SANDERSON
Age: 21
Position: Centre-back
Club: Bromham City

His ability to mop up his team-mates errors at the back has led to Sanderson picking up the unusual nickname of “Kitchen Roll” at the Navies. MacRobb's more fluid style of defending will likely see Sanderson drop back as an impromptu sweeper when the need arises – or, as the Bromham defender calls it, “the usual”.

Image

Lucas CAMARA
Age: 28
Position: Right wing-back
Club: Baskita FC (PAS)

Cultured wing-back, comfortable both in tracking back and with ball at feet. Looking to grab his place in the first team back after the emergence of McKeown.

Image

James GOLDWYN
Age: 17
Position: Centre-back
Club: Casuals Osteria

Versatile ball-playing defender who can play further up at a pinch. Still developing the more nuanced parts of his game, but definitely someone who can come on and do a job in a variety of positions.

Image

Alexander SOLIS
Age: 22
Position: Centre-back
Club: Emberton Reds

Looks like he'd be knocked over by a stiff breeze, but don't let that fool you. Solis is a well-balanced centre-half who works his craft through speed and timing. That said, can come off second-best against an old-fashioned physical centre-forward.

Image

Michael HOUSEMAN
Age: 21
Position: Centre-back
Club: Stanton Town

An absolute brick wall of a defender. Slow by Krytenian standards – pace tends to take precedence over power here – his old-fashioned sensibilities of hard tackles and big clearances are a useful asset to relieve pressure on his team-mates.

Image

Hugh DANVERS
Age: 24
Position: Left wing-back
Club: Beckton Supermarine

More comfortable on the ball than off, Danvers provides a lighter touch when the situation requires a bit more finesse than Ó Laoghaire's more agricultural style. Also comfortable as a left winger if the situation arises.

Image

Declan WARREN
Age: 23
Position: Centre-back
Club: Caversham

No relation to recently-ousted national team manager Tommy – that could have been awkward otherwise – Warren's strengths are his speed and positioning. His timing could do with some work, though; expect deep inhalations if he attempts a tackle in the box.

Image
Image

Eddie CULVERHOUSE
Age: 23
Position: Defensive midfield
Club: Mercia Bromham

Midfield dynamo reminiscent of the likes of Wilson, O'Neill, and Snelders. Has broken through in a talented Mercia Bromham team, and is now looking to solidify his place as the fulcrum of the national team.

Image

Shawn BURNS
Age: 24
Position: Right wing
Club: Caledon Simpson

Old-fashioned winger with bags of speed. Overlaps well with McKeown for his club; now looking to bring that to the national team.

Image

Esteban SALVADOR
CAPTAIN
Age: 31
Position: Attacking midfield
Club: Avidia United

The latest in a long line of Krytenian midfield puppetmasters. Salvador looks so at home with the ball at his feet, you're expecting him to be playing in tartan slippers. Likely to also be the first in line for an attacking free-kick. With Culverhouse behind, expect Salvador to be a headache in an entire third of the pitch, up to and including assisting Klaasen up top.

Image

Dylan JAMES
Age: 26
Position: Left wing
Club: Stanton Town

Born in New Cefn, James thankfully has a better grasp of English than a certain Alun Belmwr. More likely to maraud the left flank with Ó Laoghaire behind; if Danvers is playing, however, James will drift inside as an extra option in the middle.

Image

Charlie RICE
Age: 21
Position: Defensive/attacking midfield
Club: Stanton Town

Prefers pulling the strings in the centre of the pitch, but has a knack for causing problems from range. Decent on the defensive side of things as well – indeed, it's Rice's ability to play box-to-box that has earned him a call-up to the squad.

Image

Darren BARNES
Age: 19
Position: Attacking midfield
Club: Ousevale Borough

Broke through at half-forward for the Tigers, Barnes' comfort zone is just behind the front line, powering into space and foxing defenders. Another Salvador in the making, perhaps.

Image

Carl WEBB
Age: 23
Position: Left wing
Club: Ashton Olympic

Lightning fast winger and demon crosser. Lacks a bit of finishing ability, which is probably why MacRobb has him on the back burner in terms of team selection.

Image

Darragh GILSENAN
Age: 24
Position: Defensive midfield
Club: Emberton Hibernians

The midfield rock upon which the Unified Church of Hibs is built. A traditional ball-winning midfielder who likes to pick out a long one.

Image

Maurice COMAN
Age: 23
Position: Right wing
Club: Mercia Bromham

Cultured winger with a great turn of foot. Has plenty of tricks in the arsenal, even if he does lack a smidgen of raw pace.

Image
Image

Reece KLAASEN
Age: 29
Position: Centre-forward
Club: Stanton Town

Apex predator of a striker, seems to find a way to get on to any ball delivered into his general area. A useful skill considering the bunch of cloggers he had to deal with at Aigburth; has found life much easier in Stanton.

Image

Callum CROFT
Age: 25
Position: Centre-forward
Club: Caledon Simpson

An absolute magician with the ball at his feet. His goals and assists were instrumental in winning the title for the Lions. Has lost his place in the first team thanks to MacRobb's less swashbuckling style, but is ready to jump in as frontman or string-puller at the drop of a hat.

Image

Ryan COSTELLO
Age: 26
Position: Centre-forward
Club: Avidia United

Very much a “do-it-all” forward, happy to play as the focal man or as a false nine. Happiest with ball at his feet, looking to give defenders migraines.

Image
Image
Tanner MacRobb is all about fluidity of play and getting his team to perform more than one role on the pitch. The initial setup is probably nearest a 3-3-3-1, but what's actually going on depends largely on the situation. Sanderson may drop back to a full sweeper if required, the wing-backs are just as likely to drop back as to overlap, and if Krytenia are pushing forward, expect Foster or Jones to push up, releasing Culverhouse to assist upfield. Salvador, meanwhile, is expected to have a free role.

In this formation, Krytenia's biggest advantages are speed, versatility, and outright confusing the opposition.

Initials, Name, Position, Age, Team, Place of Birth

Staff

JD – Richard VALENS - Manager – Image
BG – Blue GIBSON – Coach - Image

Team

Playing in the following formation: GK | DL DC DC DR | MC MC MC | SC SC SC

The first player(s) named in each area of the team start the game. Our line-up will broadly be as follows (unless you RP one of our players has an injury or something):

GK: Natural
DsL-R: Sandman, Sackholme, o.t. Streamcarers, Featherborn
MCs: Midday, Sunteller, Bridgebuilder
SCs: Russo, Twonames, Clearedway

Further information on the players is below if it is required and/or of interest.

Number, Name, Position, Age, Place of Birth, Club
All players male (He/Him) unless specified

Goalkeepers - 3

1 - Marcus NATURAL - GK – 29 – Fringilla, Chaffinch Island Image – Cottsworth City Image
Having excelled as a goalkeeper from an early age in Fringilla, Natural's surname came naturally to him following glowing reports from his coaches on the way up.The only thing that had held him back from number one status is Softstep's superior foresight.
12 - Moyake ONYEFULU - GK – 28 – Dugba, Cobrio Jensee Island – CF Solidarite Akash, Cobrio
She/Her
Onyefulu is half-Ochreite, being born to an Ochreite mother. Whilst convention in Cobrio is for the mother's name to be carried over, Onyeful's own mother was insistent she take her father's name. She is currently playing for CF Solidarite Akash and is one of four overseas players drafted in by the Ochre Islands during the current crisis.
13 – Leora SOFTSTEP - GK – 37 – Cerrston, Juniper Island Image – Juniper Mournhow F.C. Image
She/Her
Leora's place of birth is noted as Cerrston, when in fact she was born on one of the ships carrying Bostopians to their new home in the Ochres. That it happened to dock in Cerrston, where her family settled, was just luck. Her parents chose a new surname after watching their child take her first furtitive steps outside, wanting to ditch their old Bostopian name. While there is some doubts over her ability to play as an international goalkeeper, her ability to read the game makes up for a lack of height (comparative to other top-flight goalkeepers at least) and fans joke that it seems she knows where the ball will go before the striker does.

Defenders - 7

15 - Harry SANDMAN – DL – 34 – Slipsway, Chaffinch Island Image – Slipsway Town F.C. Image
The youngest member of the squad, only just turning 16 in time for the first qualifying game, Harry Sandman is the first player in any Ochre national squad to be born on Chaffinch Island. Adopting his surname from his love of running on the beach, he tends to be more of a sweeper than a proper centre half, being able to quickly take care of opponents passes into the box before they cause too much harm. His pace and stamina also allows him to play as a makeshift right wing-back, but his crosses come across as clearances more often than not.
6 – Julian SACKHOLME - DC – 27 – Bellflower, Mournhow Island Image – Ousevale Borough Image
Sackholme was born in Bellflower to parents who were members of Krytenia's diplomatic corps. He spent the first few years of his life in Bellflower, before moving to Ousevale, his parents hometown. Whilst he hasn't been able to secure a place in Borough's starting XI, he's keen to impress during the Cup of Harmony to further put his name in the plans of Ousevale's manager.
4 – Daniela o.t. STREAMCARERS – DC – 32 – Florindia, Dracaena Image – Miradela GD Image
She/her
Daniela of the Streamcarers was the oldest player to make their Ochre debut at a major tournament. Whilst the Ochres is making great strides towards equality of the sexes, on a football pitch women are still expected to show they can match the males in strength to play in the male-dominated professional leagues. Thus, whilst having natural defending ability, she has had to work harder than a lot of the men to claim her position within the national defensive group at all. In order to get more playing time and show some of the olds around the national side she is capable, Daniela has had to move away from her clan and is now playing for Miradela GD in Ko-oren.
5 - Julen GORGEWALKER – DR – 31 – Bellflower Image – West Bellflower F.C. Image
Amongst a very fit, professional squad, Gorgewalker is probably the fittest player on the team, largely in part due to his enjoyment of walking along the many gorges that make up the Ochre hinterland. Employed as a wing-back by West Bellflower, Gorgewalker displays many fine qualities going forward and in defence.
16 - Lucy FEATHERBORN- DR – 35 – City of Louisa, Hope Island Image – Schemerdrecht SVV Image
She/Her
Featherborn currently plies her trade at right-back for Schemerdrecht SVV, having left her hometown team Louisa Hope F.C. for the Ko-oren side. Complaints from journalists that she could have gone to a team 'easier to spell quickly' exist though are simply batted away as 'whinging'. Pacy and versatile, she is more likely to try and beat her opponent with the ball at her feet rather than pass around them. She already displays a range of passing that could see her propelled into the midfield, whether on the wing or in the middle should her development continue at the pace it is.
3 - Michael WATERTON - DL – 27 – Endswick, Handsby Island Image – Nottshore Turquoise Image
Waterton comes from a small hamlet just outside Endwick called 'Waterton', which his father named when he first settled the area and is set on building a new town there. Wanting to stay local and help his family, Waterton has turned down offers from larger clubs to stay with Nottshore Turquoise, who are based on his home island of Handsby.
2 - Louis D'ENTRO -Vice-Captain - DC – 35 – Bellflower, Mournhow Island Image – Cottsworth City Image
Louis was born in what was known then as 'New Ranton', which was the name of the capital of the Bostopian Ochre Islands prior to independence. He is one of the better players in Cottsworth's side, who are regular title contenders in the Ochre League Division One.

Midfielders - 8

17 - Nate MIDDAY - MC – 30 – Westlands, Anley – Acrestry Town Image
Midday's is a holding midfielder who currently playes for Acrestry Town in the first division of Ochre football. He is known as a dead-ball specialist as well as having the skills needed to play in the centre of midfield at a high level.
20 - Eliot SUNTELLER - D/MC – 25 – Renhold, Mournhow Image – Lansdorn F.C. Image
Sunteller is a promising young footballer brought along to CAFA 6 to give him some experience on the regional stage before possibly making the WC94 squad. His mother, a follower of Byerxys and noted soothsayer raised him on her own from young following his father's untimely passing. Sunteller currently plays for Lansdorn, where whilst he makes a good number of appearances from the bench, clearly shows a lot of promise and potential.
14 - Luca BRIDGEBUILDERCaptain - MC – 24 – Aguaclara, Cardenao Image – Bellflower A.U. Image
Bridgebuilder is the shining star of Bellflower A.U. XI's youth academy and currently plies his trade in the first team in the Ochre First Division. Born on a small island in Cardenao to two Ochre Island parents, he is the first dual-Anaian citizen to play for the Ochre Islands. As well as football, Bridgebuilder also has a strong interest in diplomatic relations and is already tipped for a political career once his still-young playing days are over.
8 - Harry LEWIS - MC – 39 – Port Flamerty – Nuntsby City Image
11 - Joseph MIKKELS - MC – 40 – Hilltop – Lower Soffsley Image
15 - Mick BASING - DMC – 37 – Sennaton – Bellflower A.U. XI Image
18 - Adrien WITHLINENS - AMC – 30 – Flenham, Mournhow – Fringilla A.F.C. Image
Withlinens is a player who should begin to excel under Richard Valens, willing to throw himself forward at a moments notice to turn a three person front-line into four people, as well as provide defence-splitting passes from the midfield.

Strikers - 5

22 - Susana RUSSO – SC – 26 – Bridgdon, Handsby Image – Dynapolis United, Cobrio
She/Her
Susana has big shoes to fill, taking the place and number of the Ochres Bostopian-born wonderchild, Blue Gibson. However, this isn't the first time she's been faced with adversity, moving to Cobrio early on as her mother took a job in an international freight firm in Callisto, Hearthlands, who had a lot of trade with the Ochres. She rose through the youth ranks at Heart of Omorfio, then broke into their first team aged only 17. She signed for nearby 'rivals' Callisto City at 18, then moved to Dynapolis United in Cobrio's second city at 21. Surprise has been expressed in some quarters that it's taken Russo this long to catch the eye of the national team, but it won't take anyone in Cobrio by surprise if she shines on this stage.
21 - Jimmy TWONAMES - SC – 31 – Unsley, Juniper Image – Juniper Monnstair Image
Twonames plies his trade for his home island team, Juniper Monnstair, and is usually found playing as an inside forward. He joins the Ochre squad looking to break into the national team on a regular basis.
7 - Copse CLEAREDWAY - SC – 37 – Callais, Jensee Island Image – Slipsway Town Image
Copse Clearedway was born in Callais, which is on one of the smaller Ochre Islands of Jensee. He is first-choice striker for Slipsway Town, a mid-table side in the first division of domestic Ochre football. However for the Ochre national team, he is more likely to be played in the hole between attack and midfielder to give us a significant threat just outside the area, as well as knowing where a striker would want a ball playing to them.
9 - Rory BUILDER - SC – 35 – Kollingdon, Handsby Island Image – Valesthorpe Image
Rory is the youngest of the Ochre-born players, having been born a mere day or two after his parents reached Kollingdon following their migration to the Ochres from Fenton State. Whilst still largely bench-warming for Valesthorpe, the national team can see his promise and are taking him to CAFA3 in the hopes of giving him international experience in low-pressure situations.
10 - Kallum NORTHBROOK - SC – 30 – Altarton, Mournhow Image – Bellflower A.U. Image
Northbrook is an enterprising striker who usually plays as part of a two-man attack at Bellflower, which is most likely why he is on the bench for the national side.
19 – Carl-James (C.J.) LUCKSMITH - SC – 31 – Hannston, Jensee Island Image – Lionsville Transport Sports Club Image
Despite playing for a smaller Ochre side, sitting in the 4th tier of the football league, C.J. has excelled and proven himself at a high level thanks to helpful cup draws against much better teams projecting his abilities on the national stage. While football at the lower levels is a bit more rough and ready than the higher divisions, he has always been able to hold his own against strong defenders despite his young age, and their willingness to let him know they're there.

Kits & Logo

Home, Away and Third

Image Image Image

Following the war, the Ochre Government is prioritising rebuilding industry and freeing factories back to consumer goods from the war effort goods they had made instead. OchreSport is therefore back as the Ochre Islands kit manufacturers.
The home kit is a traditional striped ochre, blue and white scheme.
The away kit is a selection of colours taken from the flags of two of the Ochres cities.
The third kit is a contiuation of the 'Anaiaway' theme, reminding us that even when away from home, we are still at home in our region.
Before CAFA 2, the Ochre Islands Football Association ran a competition to design the team's logo, which was won by a 34 year old man with neither design experience or taste. Fortunately, an update of the design to account for taste was commissioned and outsourced by the OIFA, which is as below. The badge prominently features a 'little mint green hat', which actually commerorates the Ochre Islands victory in the second CAFA tournament.

Image

The Ochre Islands play a possession-based style of football which aims to prevent the opposition from scoring by simply not letting them have the ball. While we will prefer safer passes, the players generally have a good sense of when a chance is 'on' and will play balls with added risk involved where necessary.

Last time you heard from Bostopia, we were locked in a terrible conflict with a still-aggressive failure of a nation to the north, Mertagne. Mertagne started an offensive war against us then had the nerve to whinge about us enacting 'a terrible naval blockade on [their] nation'. Bostopia aided the Mertagnians with their starvation problems, and cheerfully helped Mertagne with their redevelopment schemes of many major cities across their nation, which for the record smells of baked celery. Mertagne's aggressive strike was followed by bombing activity on Bostopia's northern coast designed to sow terror against our citizenry rather than serving any actual military purpose, while also mounting a foolhardy terrorist-attack on a nuclear power station found on Bostopia's southern border, designed to plunge Bostopia, our friends in neighbouring Krytenia and the wider region under threat of windborne radiation. You'll hear more about that this cycle, however, as time has plodded on without Mertagne bothering to explain how we got there, as well as Bostopia cruelly being denied the opportunity by the sporting community at large.

All you need to know about Bostopia at the time of CAFA 8 is that the fighting has stopped, though Mertagne remains a failed state of baked celery eaters who continue to threaten other nations within the region. For now.
In the wake of the Emperor's sad death, for he is definitely dead, our brave Grand Duke, Mihaly of Cardenao, has signed a ceasefire with the Mertagnians against the wishes of [redacted and this space left intentionally blank for office use only]

The best bit about that is that the Bostopian people have a chance to regroup and become even stronger, definitely under current Head of State Grand Duke Mihaly of Cardenao, and definitely not under the Emperor, who is definitely dead, recently being quoted as 'I am dead' in a prominent Bostopian newspaper just to prove how dead he is.

Bostopia absolutely has a domestic [sport here] league and we would tell you more about our domestic [sport here] league, but it's in Bostopia so you wouldn't know them, despite Bostopia having always been in Anaia. Your ignorance of Bostopian [sport here] matters is yours to own and not something to shame us for. If the players below aren't household names, you need to ask yourself the following question: 'Am I and my household prejudiced against Bostopians? They have always been in Anaia and yet I know nothing about their league, despite the fact they were cowardly sneak-attacked by Mertagne and I haven't lifted a finger to do anything about it other than watch rolling news coverage which doesn't talk about the Bostopian [sport here] league and/or cup competition[s] which bravely carried on during the conflict.'

As you can't even name the city any of the below players were born in (fumbling guesses at 'Newfort' do not count as you can't name the county or even the duchy Newfort is in, despite the fact Bostopia has always been in Anaia), or their ages, or who they play for, we aren't going to mention them either. We would prefer to use this space to confirm your prejudices against us by leaving those details blank.

GK - Richard Lyons
DL - Michael Smith
DC - Harry Perk
DC - Gordon Richards
DR - Jake Wilkinson – Go on, tell us how old he is and who he plays for. Can you not? This is because you are prejudiced against Bostopians and Jake Wilkinson in particular. What has Jake done to you? If he performs badly this tournament it is almost certainly your and your prejudices fault and nothing to do with his actual ability or form whatsoever. What-so-ever!
ML - Bryan Harper
MC - Steven Kairs
MC - James McDadson
MR - Simon Manson
SC - Lynton Pilson
SC - Frank Rover

Subs:

GK - Dean Walters
DL/C - Miles Embridge
DR - Sam Leenton
ML - Ryan Wasting
MC - Philip Nicholls
MC/R - Kevin Grainger
SC - Walter Ambridge

The above players will play a very direct 4-4-2 and be absolutely unapologetic about it, especially if your goalkeeper is dangerously off his, her, or their line, as Bostopia chooses not to discriminate against who we attempt to humiliate by scoring against from within our own half. That we've had to tell you this is disgraceful. Bostopia has always been in Anaia and how we play should be known by now. Confirming your prejudices. Again. How many times is that now? I bet you can't even count past C in your backwards number system.

Home, Away, and Third

Image Image Image

Kits are self explanatory – they are the shirt designs that all ten of our outfield players will wear (and substitutes when entering the field at the appropriate time). They will all wear the same shirt design at the same time.

For those of you who are unaware, Bostopia will play in red and white stripes as our home kit, a blue away kit, then a wonderfully detailed burgundy third kit.

If your team is not designated as the home team, and your colours clash with ours, jolly well change your kits to an alternative. Our goalkeepers will wear a plain shirt, in a flourescent colour which we feel your players will dislike the most. That we need to say this is nothing short of ridiculous, but our players will of course also wear shorts, socks, shinpads and boots. If you knew anything about them and didn't let your prejudice get in the way, you would know whether any of them use wee little bobbles for their hair or wear headbands to stop their glorious Bostopian hair getting in their eyes during the [sport here] match.

Somehow we have ended up ran by Cardenao and puppets of the Ochre Islands. We have received no steamed hams in compensation for this outrage.

The bits whoever's "running" this season's circus needs to know

Don't strain yourself sorting that, will you?

For the people lucky enough to meet Bostopia on the pitch, you will confirm your prejudices by not already knowing the answers to the below
If my opponent RPs our match first, I give them permission to:
Bow down to Bostopian might at every opportunity.
Confirm your prejudices by telegramming Bostopia with any questions you might have and should already know the answer to.
Write mean things about Mertagne throughout the match report. It shouldn't be difficult. For instance 'and that player did that thing, a despicable act, just like when Mertagne bombed Bostopia first'.

One thing that Casaran has going for it is that it's typically set up to emulate the length of a double-elimination tournament, but with no actual eliminations until the end of the phase -- or more to the point, the number of matchdays picked is related to the size of the field. With that in mind, what's the logic behind the proposed ten-match/five series length of the initial stage of the Helvetica?

Yes, the amount of rounds in a Swiss System is generally the binary logarithm of the participants, rounded up. In the Helvetica System it's different for a few reasons. Firstly, when I was putting this together, I didn't know Swiss systems did that. Secondly, even after reading the wikipedia entry on binary logarithms I still don't know what a binary logarithm is. Thirdly, vibes.

I've just edited the bid to change two things: Firstly, the sheet now tries to keep teams that have already played one another separate. Secondly, the tiebreakers are now Strength of Opposition (the collective points of every team you've played) followed by Goal Difference, rather than initial seeding.

Home-Away-Third

The last use of these kits before a new design for WCQ96. An old school design with a prominent “double V”, the home kit is a classic yellow shirt, black shorts and yellow socks. The away kit is reversed to provide interchangeable elements, and there’s a white third kit.

Squad

Manager

Manager – Augusto Rinaldi Age: 65 [SVG/FVA]

Flavovespia’s best ever manager, Augusto Rinaldi has turned the team into one that can contend with some of the world’s very best. However at 65, there’s a sense he may well call time soon, and if he does, it will be the end of a remarkable era. Fans will hope he’s able to still give it his all as Flavovespia look for a 3rd CAFA Cup.

Goalkeepers

1 Nathan Crewe Age: 32 Position: GK Club: Marthorpe City FC Caps: 53 Goals: 0
12 Thomas Foley Age: 34 Position: GK Club: Bavingtor FC Caps: 5 Goals: 0
23 Garry Bowles Age: 29 Position: GK Club: Loxthorpe Rovers FC Caps: 0 Goals: 0

The main change in the squad here is a first call up for Garry Bowles, replacing uncapped John Gildea. Bowles was solid for Loxthorpe Rovers, having moved from Hadford Hill, but it’ll take a lot to displace Nathan Crewe. Thomas Foley is second choice, but at 34 his time in the national team is very likely near its end.

Defenders

2 Stan Scott-Wilson Age: 24 Position: LB Club: Marthorpe City FC Caps: 49 Goals: 0
3 Andrew Dance Age: 32 Position: RB Club: Loxthorpe Rovers FC Caps: 162 Goals: 2
4 Stuart Cookson Age: 34 Position: CB Club: Marthorpe City FC Caps: 199 Goals: 2
5 Paul Taylor Age: 29 Position: CB Club: Casuals Osteria [KRY] Caps: 117 Goals: 2
13 Richard Storrie Age: 21 Position: LB Club: Bavingtor FC Caps: 0 Goals: 0
14 Nazir Hussain Age: 28 Position: CB Club: Loxthorpe Rovers FC Caps: 33 Goals: 0
15 Malcolm Beresford Age: 31 Position: CB Club: Bavingtor FC Caps: 30 Goals: 0
16 Roger Burden Age: 22 Position: RB Club: Marthorpe City FC Caps: 0 Goals: 0

A few changes in the defence selection, notably that former captain David Lyons has not been selected. Stan Scott-Wilson has however proven an adept replacement at left-back, and he can also fill in at right back. Also out is Scott Gillespie, with two full back debutants. Richard Storrie and Roger Burden have shone well in the Flavovespia Super League, showing a lot of promise, and have been given their first call ups. No changes at centre back, Stuart Cookson provides a wealth of experience with Paul Taylor alongside him, rotation options are Malcolm Beresford and Nazir Hussain.

Midfielders

6 Jonathan Goldstone Age: 33 Position: CM Club: Bavingtor FC Caps: 122 Goals: 2
7 Kieron Player Age: 34 Position: CDM Club: Coret Hawks [NPH] Caps: 248 Goals: 21
8 Charles Adams Age: 25 Position: CDM Club: Maethoru SC [KOR] Caps: 47 Goals: 3
11 Jonathan Bagshaw Age: 28 Position: RAM Club: Sabrefell Moths [NPH] Caps: 182 Goals: 93
17 Martin Edwards Age: 30 Position: CDM Club: Langmere Green Rovers FC Caps: 43 Goals: 2
18 Anthony Lane Age: 25 Position: LAM Club: Loxthorpe Rovers FC Caps: 19 Goals: 4
19 Amrik Singh Age: 29 Position: RAM Club: Binclestead Wood FC Caps: 47 Goals: 11
20 Christopher Hill Age: 22 Position: CM Club: Marthorpe City FC Caps: 16 Goals: 1

No debutants in the midfield, but a combination of players in different career stages. In the middle and probably his peak, is Jonathan Bagshaw, one of the finest footballers ever from Flavovespia. Likely to play right forward, he can be a game changer. Amrik Singh is a versatile player, and as left forward has begun to really shine at international level. In midfield, a new generation with Charles Adams and Christopher Hill have begun to show the future of Flavovespian football in their position, however there is still room for Jonathan Goldstone and Kieron Player, experienced midfield maestros, in this squad. Martin Edwards and Anthony Lane are good depth options here.

Forwards

9 Michael Cole Age: 34 Position: CF Club: North Hall [BRE] Caps: 225 Goals: 133
10 Peter Langdon Age: 21 Position: CF Club: Loxthorpe Rovers FC Caps: 12 Goals: 1
21 Richard Birmingham Age: 26 Position: CF Club: Ousevale Borough [KRY] Caps: 43 Goals: 12
22 Charles Shepherd Age: 21 Position: CF Club: Marthorpe City FC Caps: 7 Goals: 2

Four forwards are in the squad, with Adrian Jones no longer selected. Michael Cole may be at the latter stages of his career, but last Qualifiers he was as good as ever, and anyone wanting his spot will have to fight hard. Richard Birmingham is still only 26, and finding his way in international football. However, he has Peter Langdon and Charles Shepherd also sniffing for a starting spot.

Tactics

The 4-3-3 remains once again. Expect to see a defence thats relatively flat and deep, and not aiming to play out the back much. In midfield, there’s a ball winning midfielder, a deep lying playmaker, and a roaming midfielder, the goal being to try and get the ball in midfield and quickly play it direct into attack. In attack, the centre forward sits a little deeper as a “false nine”, enabling the wide forwards to not only supply crosses, but also become goalscoring threats themselves.

Somehow, Vdara returned.
Fresh off of a World Cup campaign which saw them qualify at the first time of asking, Markos Moustakakos' side is back for yet another crack at the CAFA Cup. While not a competition where Vdara has seen much - if any - success, the opportunity to play more football simply could not be passed up.

The 32-year-old may have been left out of Vdara's Baptism of Fire squad, but this wasn't due to him being not good enough - simply being lost to time, forgotten about, brushed under the carpet. A move from Avondale Beach to SW Stahlberg didn't pan out well, but having since been repatriated Zaharias has returned to both his old team and his old ways, making exceptional saves in the Alpha League. This return to form, coupled with a Vdaran national team that leaks more goals than Fampritsio Romanotsis does transfers, has led to his triumphant re-addition to the squad.

Image
Captain. Leader. Legend. Pensioner. Entering his ninth cycle as captain of the national team, the 45-year-old recently wound up his illustrious playing career in Audioslavia, having played for both 1830 and Union Cathair - and becoming an all-time legend in doing so. Nowhere near as quick as he used to be, or indeed as good, but where would the team be without him? The dumps, that’s where. If there’s a corner, free kick, or penalty to be taken, you can bet your house on him being there to accurately place the ball where it needs to be. Simply the best.

Image
No longer the young gun he used to be, a successful campaign with CF Daineri culminating in promotion saw his reintroduction to Vdara’s first eleven. One of the tallest in the squad, he can most often be found playing important roles at set pieces on either side of the pitch - whether he’s blootering balls away with his massive head, or burying them in the net.

Image
Acquitting herself well in both CAFA and the Baptism of Fire, Katerina has very quickly established herself as a very solid defender, having one of the highest tackle success percentages in the squad. Being one of the starting eleven’s younger members, she still has a long way to go before she’s known as one of the big boys - well, big girls. Even stronger performances in World Cup 95 saw her earn a move to Sylestone's Betham FC, earning her previous club Chaniakos a hefty €1.5million.

Originally intended to be a defensive midfielder, a trip abroad to Tumbra has seen him make extensive use of his defensive abilities - to such an extent that he now plays as a centreback. His original experience as a midfielder allows him to be an assured, ball-playing defender, with the caveat that an aggressive head on his broad shoulders means he’ll get involved in altercations with anyone and everyone, no matter whether they’re Tumbrans or Beefsteak Cityfolk - so you’ll want to watch your back.

Another old fella with dwindling pace, Manousos has spent his entire career in his native Vdara, playing nearly 300 games for Ierapetra. The lack of any clear replacement has left him as the only real choice for the position, but that hasn’t stopped him from putting in some of his best performances all season to keep him in the squad. He’s not likely to score, and he’s not likely to make a big impact, but he’s just happy to be there.

Known among fans as the “Maltese Magician”, the Valletta native has starred alongside national hero Vlahiades, with the two having built up a very effective partnership for club and country. Regularly making progressive runs into the box, Maria’s never too far from an attacking return, and in her early twenties could yet go international.

Once a popular midfielder with South Newlandian side Walstreim Lions, a move to Ko-oren and a conversion to striker saw little success, with Brunchester United AFC slipping further and further down the Ko-orenite footballing pyramid. Now at Limecroft Et Abyss FC, the man once touted as a future Vdaran captain now seems to be winding down a career which flattered to deceive - unless, of course, he can incite a revival.

Earning herself the title of “Dame of the Dodecanese” among supporters, Rhodes-born Alessia made the move from Rodos to Panirakleios as a youngster - and hasn’t looked back since. Consistently being Vdara’s anchor in the middle, pinging balls left, right, and centre, Alessia commonly has the highest amount of passes in every game she plays, and isn’t shy to have a pop at goal herself. One of the best players domestically, fans wouldn’t be surprised to see a move made for her in future…

Another legend-turned-pensioner, at the ripe old age of 35, Chirstoforos is nowhere near the clinical, vicious striker he was in his younger days. If anything, he lumbers around the pitch, being too slow to reach most passes - and despite this, he’s still Vdara’s best option upfront. Still with Nepharim side North Laithland, his sheer insistence on picking up paycheques seems to be the only thing motivating him to continue his illustrious playing career. Well, that and the fact that he’s bored out of his mind and wants to keep himself occupied. Expect him to be on the scoresheet often, even in his current state he’s got a deadly shooting boot.

Sophia’s international career couldn’t have started any better, contributing to victory and becoming the first girl to score for Vdara. Now joined by Maria, Katerina, and Alessia, she now finds herself as the most well-respected of them all, as some of their more old-timey-minded teammates struggle to wrap their heads around this new system of inclusion. The oldheads tend to ignore that sort of thing when they score, though. Nevertheless, Sophia very rarely drops a bad performance, covering nearly every blade of grass in the opponent’s final third, and terrorising any and every defender who dares come across her.

Bio
Where is Vdara? What is Vdara? Who are Vdara? Is it a state? It’s a state of mind, that’s for sure. Established during the times of Ancient Greek colonisation, the first Vdaran settlement was in the modern day capital city of Chania, where a valiant crew had stumbled upon after setting off from Athens, and decided to settle down. This settlement evolved into a city, and this city decided to set up its own settlements, spreading Vdaran culture and ideals across many of the Mediterranean islands, creating their own archipelago. The Vdaran archipelago would go on to change hands several times over the next few millennia, being held by the Turks, Venetians, and Greeks - to name just a few. Fast forward to the present, and now you have a gyro-eating, sports-loving nation with a people who are dedicated to following Vdaran football loudly and proudly. They’ve seen the highs, and they’ve seen the lows, and they’ll now see the present. Fiercely committed to defending their honour, every single Vdaran - from the players, to the coaches, to the ordinary man or woman chilling on their couch, shouting at their television - will be readily available to convince people that, no, Vdara are not has-beans. They’re the real deal.

Do what you want. In fact, do your worst. Hurt my players. Send them to hell. I will bring them back. Send my players off - I have others. Suspend my entire team - we will bribe the referees. In fact, I encourage anyone to bribe referees against us - because they need the money.
(oh, and pick whoever you want to score goals. we’ve got plenty of players, so we’re bound to make some substitutions here and there.)
