Vuswistan government applauds Syraranto peace agreement

Image
Ruins of major cities are being cleared to start major reconstruction efforts.

Tyrnatini – President Panagiotakis Nicolalis (NUP) applauded the official ceasing of hostilities and a historic peace agreement which has been reached in Syraranto, ending the country's nearly three and a half year long civil war. Months of talks between the provisional government (formerly the "Balgita Nationalist Force" rebel groups), and factions with ties to the former Tasoulas regime, resulted in an agreement reached in Covijo on December 8th which allows for greater territorial autonomy and decentralization from the central government, while still allowing for a federalized system of parliament and power sharing. Vuswistini, Constantioan, and other SBU delegates had been moderating the talks and proposed the power sharing agreement. The treaty between the multi-sided factions now ends the fighting, though the conflict had largely ceased earlier this year with only minor clashes having occurred since late 2022.

"With today's historic agreement and the conclusion of the peace conference, we can welcome a new era in Syrarantoan history, one which pursues a new, free, bright futured nation and a hopeful return to the prestige which this great nation once commanded in Western Nortua," Nicolalis said.

Albarinean forces continue to strike Qahazar as Zalluabedi military struggles against rebel advances

WEDA and ANS forces have been engaged in an air campaign for more than a week against the self-proclaimed PRQ

SAINT RANEAU - Albarinean aircraft, alongside WEDA and ANS forces, are in their second week of an aerial bombardment of the self-proclaimed People's Republic of Qahaza, eight days after deadly drone strikes in the Tarijar Strait and the Albarinean capital of Saint Raneau left over a hundred people dead. The retribution of allied forces to the militant group known as the Kubani Unit has been a massive coordination of naval and air forces, with hundreds of key sites attributed to the PRQ's drone facilities and missile placements being destroyed in targeted sorties. Albarinean aircraft in particular have operated in the bulk of missions thus far, even scoring mid-air kills against PRQ fighter aircraft and engaging militant convoys on the ground. The main targets have widely been knocked out, according to defense officials, but the campaign will not end until "every vestige of the PRQ's ability to wage terror is eliminated," said Chancellor Melhaven. Meanwhile, the Zalluabedi military has struggled against pro-democracy rebels who are making steady gains along the western edge of the Bay.

Diplomatic relations with Syraranto to be restored following peace agreement
Syraranto's government declared the civil war is officially over after more than three years of fighting

Syrarantoans celebrate the historic peace deal which formally ended the brutal civil war

SAINT RANEAU - Chancellor Sadie Melhaven says that diplomatic relations with Syraranto are being restored and the embassy in Covijo will be opened by the beginning of 2024, after a historic and binding peace accord between the main factions of the more than three-year-long civil war agreed to a power sharing resolution, ending the conflict. More than 500,000 people had died in Nortua's deadliest ever conflict, a war which ravaged the nation and prompted a massive humanitarian crisis. The Albarinean consulates in Syraranto had closed at the beginning of the conflict in July of 2020, when the late dictator Kyraikos Tasoulas began a brutal crackdown against dissidents opposed to his regime by carpet bombing and leveling cities. Since Tasoulas' assassination in early 2022, the transition to a provisional government under former rebel leadership, and an international aid effort two years in the making, the Syrarantoan peace agreement was finally reached under SBU supervision.

"We are extremely optimistic about the future of a peaceful Syraranto," Melhaven said, indicating later in her public statements that she would visit West Nortua and meet with President Yannis Kormoulis in Covijo. "Syraranto was the helm of the West Nortuan community of nations, and with this deal we believe that they can once again be at the forefront of this incredibly diverse and opportunistic region."

PRESDIENT CHERDENKO SUPPORT IDEA OF CCA PEACEKEEPING MISSION IN QAHAZAR

Image
President Cherdenko addressing the Assembly

DABATTA- During the Kossmilian assembly, President Nikolai Cherdenko support the idea of deploying CCA peacekeepers in Zalluabed’s Qahazar Peninsula during the ongoing civil war in Zalluabed, he also suggested the peacekeeping force if send should be only nations from Adula to represent Adulan interest first on the continent. He support Kossmil to be one of the nations to be part of peacekeeping force.

“Seeing what is going on in Zalluabed, is a very tragic sight behold to the world to see. With news coming out of Qahazar Peninsula is of horror, the people of Qahazar are suffering and they are crying for help as tyranny is ruling over them. The so-called People's Republic of Qahaza, is nothing more than a group of thugs who bring nothing but misery to the people but bring chaos across the southern Adula. I will call on the CCA for the creation of a peacekeeping force to be deployed, if Kossmil was asked to be part of it then I will give the green light.”

The Civil war in Zalluabed has been going for past couple of months with no signs of ending any time soon, with the fractions of ousted democratically-elected President Husani Antar who is in exile at Albarine and the Royal Zalluabed Defense Forces (RZDF) originally under the command of General Saahir Salim, the perpetrator behind the coup back in August, it now under the command of Jirhanu Bjyala after General Salim was killed by Zamastan drone strike. But the also interesting news of “rogue” RZDF general by the name of Suhaib el-Dar Moussa who was in charge of Kubani Unit in the Qahazar region, he later on declared himself leader of the self proclaimed People's Republic of Qahaza and appeared to be in charge of Qahazar region. The self-proclaimed People's Republic of Qahaza (PRQ) has been launching drone attacks against targets in the Tarijar Strait region but also the reports of persecution, torture, and genocide against ethnic and religious minorities in the Qahazar region.

Kossmilian Police “declare war” on gangs

Image

SVOBOTOV- Kossmilian police have launched a crackdown on gangs activities in the southern and southern western part of Kossmil, the main hot spots being the cities of Leniya, Togorod, Kurget and Dmista but also the nearby towns and villages near the hot spots will be investigated. This initiative was launched after a massive spike of gang related crimes were reported in those hot spots, including the reports of gang wars and reports of drugs and weapon smuggling into the country.

Statement was made by the Kossmillian Police service which stated that they will bring order and will severely punish the gangs and they promise they wont hold back and will hunt them down. This crackdown has funding from the government but also some private investors has invested into the crackdown.

Dimitrij Blichfeld lifting the trophy

DABATTA- After two year of underachieving, Dabatta City has won their first even Kossmil Super League title with ten point margin with Dynamo Svobotov finishing second place. Dabatta City won 2-0 against Dmista FC at home at the Petrogard Stadium with Zamastanian international Justin Carr scoring 2 goal to win the title in front of pack stadium with owner of the team, Anatoly Rozhnov watching on with Prime Minister Dimitri Georgievski also watching. At the end of the match, Carr won man of the match but also won the Kossmil Super League MVP Award for scoring 20 goals and 12 assist this season, he wasn't the only player to award as goalkeeper and Vœyetskan international Dimitrij Blichfeld won the golden gloves award, Sergey Dzyuba also won coach of the year award.

FC Dabatta City labelled by media as “Team Showtime” affectionately or “Team Tobacco” insultingly as the team is financially backed by the Kossmilian Tobacco Company chairman Anatoly Rozhnov.

Former-President William Urskabau dies, aged 70
Urskabau stepped down in August of 2022 after several health concerns.

Image
Former-President William Urskabau, November 2023

BERESA - Former-President William Urskabau, a transformative and divisive figure in SCB politics and global diplomacy, passed away on Monday, December 11th, in the early morning following a nearly three-year-long battle with cancer. He was 70 years old, one month shy of 71. Urskabau served as Saint Croix and Bens' 28th president from 2008 until he stepped down in 2022, citing health concerns. President Wira Santoso called Urskabau a "tremendous patriot to his nation, an ever faithful servant and believer in our country, the pursuit of peace, and the betterment of all." Urskabau will be given a state funeral, which is expected to be held on Friday, December 15th.

William Urskabau was born in Sakoyva in 1953 to a poor family, but he excelled in education and pursued an occupation in the medical field. He became a successful neurosurgeon, eventually being slated by President Airra Lebann to head up the SCB Health Ministry. In 2008, he ran for president against Bachok bin Yahaya, with his medical career and philanthropy helping push him to a landslide victory with more than 72% of the vote, the widest margin in SCB history. Urskabau went on to win three bids for reelection, with his most recent reelection being in March of 2020.

As President, he oversaw a thriving economy as Saint Croix has quickly expanded its Gross Domestic Product, nationalized the health care of the nation, proceeded over an expansion of the Armed Forces, and led the nation through numerous threats from foreign powers. Among these threats were the Northeast Croix Islands Standoff, when Alecburgh sent forces to the border in an attempt to annex Saint Croix's northeastern Maddis Island and Pirvia Island, and the Tarijar Strait Crisis which involved insurrectionists from Qolaysia attempting to commit attacks within Saint Croix. Among his last acts as President was approving a parliamentary pursuit to join WEDA, a decision which he was hesitant to apply but ultimately decided to do, in his words, "to protect the integrity of the security of our nation and South Adula."

The President's stand-firm policy in the wake of social unrest in neighboring Alecburgh was seen in the tensions between himself and former-Prime Minister Benjamin Warren, who ordered troops to SCB's border. When Alecburgh's southwest provinces attempted to secede and the country plunged into a constitutional crisis, Urskabau leaned into diplomacy with allies and expanded WEDA's allowance of forces in SCB military bases. Urskabau also oversaw last year's controversial admission into WEDA amid flaring tensions with De Yuan. The decision, however, paid off according to Urskabau, who that past spring had to skim the line between peaceful negotiation and assertive pushback against the Yuaneze during the Jinchon Sea crisis.

On the economic front, President Urskabau nationalized the oil industry but allowed foreign companies to invest in shareholder permits, which allowed the SCB economy to strengthen, centralize, and diversify at the same time. Urskabau's massive investment in education is credited with taking the country from mass illiteracy to a major international technological powerhouse. The country's national economy benefits from a highly skilled workforce and is among the most educated countries in the world with one of the highest percentages of its citizens holding a tertiary education degree. Saint Croix and Bens's economy was one of the world's fastest-growing from the early 1960s to the late 1990s, and was still one of the fastest-growing developed countries in the 2000s. It recorded the fastest rise in average GDP per capita in the world between 2011 and 2019. Saint Croix and Bens citizens refer to this growth as the Miracle on the Croix Sea, referring to development in the South Coast's industry region.

In July 2020, Urskabau coughed up blood during a public speech and was quickly ushered off stage. Days later, he publicly confirmed that he had been diagnosed with lymphatic node cancer. This, as well as widely documented health concerns in the past from broken bones to heart attacks, contributed to his decision to resign on August 4th, 2022. Then-Deputy President Wira Santoso took office, and is up for reelection in March.

"The past 14 years have been a remarkable period for our nation," Urskabau said during his resignation speech, visibly holding back tears and wiping his eye in the emotional address. "Under my administration I have overseen the growth and expansion of our economy, our foreign standing, our remarkable national identity, and the strength of our people. Saint Croix and Bens has prospered and I have been honored to be your President. I have no doubt in the hope our future will hold."

Urskabau's passing, though anticipated due to extensively publicized accounts of his failing health, has no less come as a shock to the Croixian people. Among the outpourings of grief have included Urskabau's political rivals, including his first electoral opponent Bachok bin Yahaya, who called him a "straight-forward and honest man, with whom I often disagreed, but never distrusted nor took as a foe. President Urskabau tended to this nation with integrity and commitment, and we have lost a true giant of our history. He will be greatly missed."

Foreign Minister Izzat bin Bulat, currently in Shoassau meeting with officials there, has been recalled to attend ceremonies honoring the late president. Bulat, when asked about the passing of Urskabau during a joint press conference with Shoassauan Prime Minister William Eurenne, said "what has not been said about this remarkable man? He transformed our nation from an upward focused but unorganized chaotic natured place into a steady-streamed, well-oiled machine. He took us from a state of distrust towards our government to a general understanding of good faith. I served as his deputy for two years before I was named Foreign Minister four years ago, and I knew on every occasion that he was always doing his best for our sake."

Urskabau leaves behind his wife, Abella Khamis (66), two sons, and several grandchildren. He will be buried in the National Cemetary in Saint Elmenau at the conclusion of his state funeral. Invitations have been sent to heads of state throughout the world to attend.

Verdusan security forces stop RLA terror plot in Yerusalahm

Verdusan security forces detained six individuals believed to be members of the Rajit Liberation Army preparing to carry out a sophisticated suicide attack in the Holy City, according to a statement from Prime Minister Nida. The RLA had been issuing threats online and via rogue spokespersons over the past several weeks as the 35th anniversary of the 1988 battle in Yerusalahm during the civil war, and Verdusan authorities had warned of renewed violence from fundamentalist Rajit sects in the city.

"We uncovered plans that the RLA remnants had prepared to carry out in the Holy City, in the Jewish, Christian and Muslim quarters, but primarily to target the Christmas celebrations planned in the Christian quarter," said Prime Minister Yahya Deeb Nida. "Our authorities, working alongside the respective quarter authorities of the Jewish, Christian, Muslim, and Rajit security units, detained the suspect individuals and have thus removed the threat."

There has been sporadic, but rare violence in Yerusalahm since the turn of the century, with only 3 fatal incidents having occurred since 2003. Yerusalahm is one of the oldest cities in the world, considered holy to the three major Abrahamic religions— Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, as well as Rajitism. Historically a source of contention in the status between Jewish and Muslim populations in Verdusa, the ratification of the 1957 constitution insured shared power between the Jewish, Muslim, Christian, and Rajit populations, moved the capital to Shanadu, and set Yerusalahm as the "Sacred City", declaring that no single religion could impose their rule over the city as it was the "dwelling place of God". Quarters for each government-recognized faction were established, as such, the government of Verdusa can only enforce security around the perimeters of the city and the respective factions enforce their own quarters. The center point of the city, the "Old City", is designated as neutral ground where people of all religions can observe their faiths side by side.

The Rajit Liberation Army, abbreviated as RLA, is a Rajit political and paramilitary organization founded in 1985, with the aim of overthrowing the Verdusan government, taking control of the holy city of Yerusalahm, and removing Judiasm, Islam, and Christianity from the power-sharing agreements guaranteed by the 1957 Verdusa constitution. The foundational charter of the RLA, published in 1987, articulated its ideology as a struggle against these religions, calling for the destruction of Verdusa to establish a Rajit state in its place. The group's insurgency against the Verdusan government and CCA peacekeeping forces in the 1987-89 civil war, and attacks against Verdusan civilians including suicide bombings, led to it being labeled a terrorist organization by most governments in the CCA, though it is recognized as a political party by the governments of Rajihat and Behinia, who have backed and supplied it.

The Verdusa Civil War was a conflict in Verdusa fought between the internationally backed Verdusan government and Rajit rebels which lasted from February 1987 until September 1989. Verdusa had an extensive history of religious tensions, due to being the birthplace of Judaism and Christianity, and a holy land for Islam and Rajitism. Upon independence, the Verdusan constitution insured a power sharing agreement between the four religions and established Yerusalahm as a neutral "sacred" city. Though widely accepted by most of Verdusa's population, fundamentalist Rajits long opposed the deal, and in 1987 Rajit military officers carried out an attempted coup against the Verdusan government, tried to capture Yerusalahm, and expanded into an insurgency under the Rajit Liberation Army, backed by the Rajihat and Behinian governments. After the CCA Security Council issued calls for a ceasefire and the rebels ignored the deadline, CCA peacekeeping forces largely consisting of Emmirian and San Martinan troops were sent to back the Verdusan government. By 1989, the rebels had been widely defeated and the conflict quelled, aside from sporadic and rare attacks. The war proved to be a case of successful use of peacekeeping missions.

President Medeiros meeting with political and religious officials in Shanadu

President Emília Medeiros is in Shanadu, Verdusa, marking the first visit to the Holy Land for a Quetanan head of state in over fifty years. On Monday, she met with Prime Minister Yahya Deeb Nida and President Valtena Leo, as well as the respective parliamentary leaders of the Rajit and Jewish communities. Verdusa, despite being geographically near to Quetana, has long held neutrality on the world stage due to its cultural and religious significance to the Abrahamic religions, and as such the deeply catholic tradition of Quetanan politicians in the past had restricted diplomatic travel to the country on a basis of respect. However, as this year's elections in Verdusa marked the first time since the end of the country's civil war in the late 1980s that the country's four main religions are all represented on near equal executive footing, Medeiros is one of many foreign leaders to visit and commemorate the steady peace between the communities.

"Verdusa's stance of neutrality and religious peace, while perhaps fragile at times, is a wonderful example of the peace that can be achieved despite differences, the shared value of humanity, and the importance of sharing space on this planet," Medeiros said. "The Holy Land is God's land, and whether we are Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Rajit, or any number of faiths who call this land home, we can all agree to this; the God of our world oversees us all, and it is better to live together than to live apart."

Medeiros first met with Prime Minister Yahya Deeb Nida, a Muslim who was elected following a coalition merger between the moderate Muslim and Rajit parties and the largest Christian party, Democratic Union. The two discussed Verdusa's status of neutrality as it relates to ongoing tensions in Adula, including WEDA's current military operations in the Qahazar region of Zalluabed. Verdusa is increasingly finding itself isolated in terms of geopolitics, bordering Emmiria and San Martina (both WEDA nations), Rajihat (a TTPA nation), and sharing maritime borders with Behinia (a TTPA nation). Verdusa's neutrality has led it to both prosper economically, due to variations in who it can trade and do business with, though it has also come with severe limitations in terms of security guarantees. This has overall played well into the hands of the government, as the proportionally sectioned religious-based parties have consistently and increasingly sought to better their national unity despite obvious tensions.

Later, Medeiros met with President Valtena Leo, who represents the Christian parties. The President of Verdusa is head of state, with limited and largely ceremonial duties, alternating every three years among the main religious groups. Prior to this year's elections, the position was held by the Jewish parties and represented by Symeon Hodesmann. Hodesmann currently heads the Jewish coalition, and also met with Medeiros alongside President Leo, the Rajit coalition leader Saeed Mehrnia, and Muslim coalition leader Bishara Mansi Kassim. The five leaders discussed religious cooperation, and all four of the political heads emphasized that the will of Verdusa's most recent election indicated that national unity superseded former disputes along religious lines as there is general consensus on reforming health care, fixing the national transportation system, widening access to education both religious and secular, and immigration/refugee reform laws.

"It's inspiring to see this desired cooperation between religions, considering what used to be," Medeiros said. "We should all strive to seek the respect and admiration for each other to work for the betterment of our people the way the Verdusan faiths have come to do."

Medeiros also becomes the first Quetanan head of state ever to visit Yerusalahm, the Holy City which holds high importance in all Abrahamic religions. It is one of three cities in the world which is administered by religions rather than a direct government (the other being Al-Makkah in Emmiria and the Holy See of Montemera). Medeiros finalized her trip with a visit to the Holy City, visiting the Christian quarter and meeting with local leaders before attending a service at the historic Church of Ascension. She also entered the Old City, notably without security as Verdusan, Quarter, and International security units are not permitted to enter the zone.

[HEADLINES] Emperor forms special agency to enforce Public Orders

Category: Government & Politics

Today His Emperor's Government announced the establishment of the Office of Public Orders Enforcement ("OPOE") to release some of the burden situated on the various enforcers of state, according to the Emperor. OPOE will be a national agency with extrajudicial authority, hankering back to old times before FIAA was enacted, and according to the Minister of State Affairs Nicole Yarger, it will be an agency operated in-house through the Office of the Emperor. Emperor Solis in a press briefing on the announcement stated "While this agency will be the primary enforcer of orders that I promulgate, no such agency of a legal authority will be prevented from enforcing an order shall the circumstances align", meaning that the NSS, CCS, etc. are still expected to enforce public orders, however it will no longer be their priority.

OPOE will also reportedly cover enforcement of national emergencies, assisting in the promulgation of orders and tracking department merges in line with the Public Order Act. OBC reached out to the Minister of Internal Security Jose Cortese for comment on the announcement and they responded saying: "I fully support the mission of the Emperor and of the newly established Office of Public Orders Enforcement to lessen the burden upon the sister agencies and bodies with whom carried out enforcement of these orders". OPOE's first Director, Kamil Prazak, was named the same day. Kamil is an APF war veteran on disability and retirement, fighting in the CTW at the age of 55, now 61 years old and with PTSD and a bad back. Kamil could not be reached for comment on his appointment.

Is the government too bureaucratic?

Category: Opinion

I have both read and written too many stories about the government, and one thing that I have learned, is that for our society, there is too much bureaucracy. If you look at governments everywhere, they have agencies, we all do; However, where my problem comes into play is the fact that we have 12 law enforcement authorities, all of them national and while they all cover different pieces, that is way too much paperwork and nightmares for me. Many governments have at most 5 or 6 law enforcement agencies, not including federal and republican governments, which tend to have devolved policing. Our nation has no devolution except for the Phoenix Islands, and even then, Makko Oko rules supreme.

I think merging some of the agencies such as the DIFSS and NSS or NSS and CCS into one can help cut down on jurisdictional complaints and lead to less paperwork overall. I am shocked to say that no scuffles between all the agents has occurred. I would have thought with all the agencies people would be arguing over who is best and worst. All this to end, we need less bureaucracy.

New Restrictions On MakCare Established: Supreme Leader & Emperor Support

Category: Health & Lifestyle

Today Minister of Health Ada Paquette made official the long-awaited changes that were due since a little after her appointment to the position. MakCare, the government-provided healthcare program, has since its inception accepted all citizens no matter who they were or what they had. Now that is slated to change with a new mandate from Minister Paquette prohibiting any citizen from obtaining MakCare that "has a drug or narcotic related criminal indictment" or that has betrayed the government. In addition, MakCare will now have policies in place for pre-existing conditions, forbidding the coverage of them for any plan except for Premium Services. The only exception is if MakCare is provisioned through the ORSPS.

These changes are slated to prohibit approximately 5% of the population, with the majority of them having legally smoked or drank before it was illegalized. About 6% of the population have pre-existing conditions according to the ICS. The changes are slated to become finalized and official by the beginning of January.

[HEADLINES] Supreme Leader Establishes Private Educational Company

Category: Government & Politics

Documents of incorporation with Supreme Leader Richard Garst's name on it were spotted today on the ISOC's company register by the OBC. The name of the company, Satacate, was approved for incorporation as a limited liability company in the "Education" industry. Dozens of small companies exist within the industry, with the Ministry of Education & Propaganda handling all sales of pencils and other essential goods, in addition to the production of textbooks and other related educational curricula. Satacate is reportedly owned 75/25 between Richard Garst and the Church of Makko Oko and OBC business analysts noticed an initial operating amount of SLO$230,000. We reached out to Richard for comment on the company and they responded saying: "Our idea for an educational service provider for the home and international has borne fruit. We intend to produce and distribute religious educational content to the nation and to others to spread the spirit of Satan and his red name. All proceeds will be split between the government and the Church for licensing expenses etc."

When asked if they planned on producing non-religious content they simply responded "Yes". The Emperor nor the Minister of Education & Propaganda could be reached for comment.

MakCare Expanded, International Coverage In Jeopardy

Category: Health & Lifestyle

Today Emperor Solis enacted the MakCare Community Service Act, which establishes community-run hospitals owned to the government and trust corporations that cities and divisions can establish upon the approval of the ministers of state affairs and health. The oddest provision was the establishment of religious hospitals and trusts. Minister of Health Ada Paquette lauded the legislation as a "feat that will greatly expand the availability of our services". The bill took about a week of debate and was ultimately countered by the House of Lords with a proposal that religious medical practices be incorporated. The back-and-forth led to the provisions being included and then subsequently passed.

In related news, Minister Paquette published a draft policy update outlining the cancellation of all international coverage for MakCare insurers, which would leave citizens without healthcare coverage while traveling. Millionaires and frequent travelers alike dissented with the policy proposal, calling it "An attack on basic human rights". The cancellation of international coverage would save the government approximately SLO$524M over the next 3 years. If plan premiums aren't dropped, the government will profit about SLO$700M a year extra starting in mid-2024 after the policy coverage would end. She responded to the criticisms saying: "The criticisms provided on the potential of discontinuing our international programs, while valid, must be considered to provide for a better future for our citizens. The cancellation of our international programs can allow us to tackle disasters in the future with relative ease and efficency. We are exploring all of our options and will follow up on our proposal soon."

Minimum Wage Increase: Are Companies Prepared?

Category: Business

The Ministry of Labor's minimum wage hike is set to take effect next month. Citizens all over the nation are awaiting the sweet increase of their paychecks, with some businesses, mainly small, already enforcing the increase. Solus Entertainment Corporation does not have any minimum wage employees except for interns, which they announced would start being paid the new minimum wage on December 25th, a week before the week-long Feast of Hellfire. All other employees received a 4% salary increase due to the minimum wage hike, which wasn't required according to both the MOL and President Alexander Theiss. Alexander said to OBC: "I believe that everybody deserves to be treated as humans if they are doing good work. We can afford the increases and with upcoming projects will be able to offer even more to our employees."

Radiation Poisonings: More Redacted Documents Published, FIS Agent Li Otten Convicted On All Charges

Category: Law & Order

Today His Emperor's Government published more redacted documents in regards to the radiation poisonings and the subsequent investigations. The newly published documents shed light on a formerly top secret and unknown project, Project Cobra. The documents go into extensive detail on a "radiological device of coercion", with specifics on the development and operation of the device being redacted. Surprisingly, the government left the portion of the documents on the testing of the device fully unredacted, which the Office of the Emperor refused to comment on. After the publishing of the reports, within 12 hours, Owler and MakBook both blew up mad over what the government had done, calling for "the end to all responsible". OBC political analysts spotted multiple reports of the Emperor to the CCA Security Council by civil rights figures.

The Emperor publicly addressed the nation later that day and went into more detail on the project, saying to everybody that they "had not been made aware of how Minister Kellison and his agencies had been using the weapon" and that they never would have authorized it so freely had they "not breached the trust of the Crown or of the state". Regardless, a state funeral had been held for him last week at the national cemetery in Opposh.

In related news, former CIB and now-former FIS agent Li Otten, now known to be the inventor of the weapon, was convicted today on all charges by the Emperor's Court in Rul, Exsby, Makko Oko, with the charges ranging from terrorism to war crimes. Five minutes after the verdict was read, they were sentenced to the death, however, the Ministry of Justice ordered a stay on their execution until the Security Council has had time to decide if they want to prosecute, according to the Minister of Justice Sara Mauer.

Haduastani forces retake Sakchu province as cracks in Elastani defenses emerge
Counter assaults on the southwestern front have pushed Elastani forces into decisions of retreat

Home | HADUASTAN | International | Politics | Entertainment | Science

Sakchu province has been retaken after more than 3 months of brutal fighting, according to Prime Minister Sartaj Bali. The withdrawal of Barangadeshi forces last month, coupled with Elastani commanders struggling to coordinate defenses in the positions they have held since and the repositioning of Haduastani warplanes, has resulted in Haduastani forces retaking the administrative center of Godabura and all border towns. A campaign is underway to retake other regions still held by ACWAC forces, as they have failed to progress beyond stated goals and have suffered widespread declines in their territory since the counter assault began last month.

Efforts for peace negotiations fell through last month, as both Prime Minister Bali and President Panwar of Elastan refused to meet or send their chief diplomats to coordinate agreements, and the belief by both sides that the war cannot end in its current stalemate. Additionally, ongoing anti-government protests in Elastan have complicated the Elastani military effort, which has granted Haduastan the ability to strike back in key areas of vulnerability.

Rademacher assassin found dead in prison cell

Behringen Prison where Christoph D. was found dead in his cell on Friday morning.

Author: Florian Schmidt

Christoph D., who tried to murder Prime Minister Elisabeth Rademacher during a visit to Behringen last July, was found dead in his cell in the Behringen prison on Friday morning. Prison guards found the 41-year-old lifeless in his solitary cell during a routine morning check. “We can confirm that a suicide occurred in the Behringen prison,” said the Metakumburgian Ministry of Justice.

Christoph D., who, according to the police, was a supporter of the right-wing extremist Besmenian Ochsenbein Party (BOP) and had often had to deal with the law for minor crimes in the past, gained international attention at the end of July 2023 when he tried to murder Prime Minister Rademacher with a knife during a visit to Behringen. Shortly after the attack, which Rademacher luckily survived, Christoph D. was taken into custody by the police and then taken to the Behringen prison. The trial for the attempted murder of Rademacher was originally scheduled to begin in January 2024.

D. left a farewell letter, which is now being examined by the authorities. In it he is said to claim, among other things, that he is innocent and wanted to free the Besmenians. It remains to be seen whether the letter actually sheds more light on the background to his crime.

Queen Mother Remelda IV
Queen Mother Remelda IV passes away, aged 85

Viitaniemi - Tõrnu Palace has announced the death of her Majesty the Queen Mother Remelda IV. She was 85 years old. King Oliver I called his mother's passing "a tremendous loss for the Royal Family and the Kingdom of Caspiaa," and spoke of Remelda, affectionately known as "Queen Remy", as a "liberating and confident guiding figure for our nation." Remelda's position as Queen Consort to Adrian II was positioned in April 2021 upon his passing, and as Oliver took the throne, Remy relegated herself to privacy and only rare public appearances. Crown Princess Kirsten, whose middle name was adopted from her grandmother, also released a brief statement calling the late Queen a "loving and ever-present joy for me, my siblings, my father, and many others."

Remelda Urabel was born on August 26th, 1938 in Kandona. A commoner, she married then-Crown Prince Adrian in 1976, and took on the title of Duchess of Kandona. This title lasted only a year and a half, as when Adrian ascended the throne in 1978, Remy became Queen Consort. The couple had three children; Princess Vivian (1971), Oliver (1973), and Nina (1977). Throughout Adrian's reign, Remelda made state visits to more than 90 countries and oversaw numerous legislative shifts as party divisions took over parliament. Her eldest daughter, Princess Vivian, died in a plane crash in 2011, making Oliver the next in line for the throne. Adrian II suffered a heart attack on April 11th, 2023, and died ten days later. He was the longest-reigning monarch in Caspiaa's history at 43 years and 87 days. Remy had since been largely private.

Prime Minister Tullia Grönberg, currently in Saint Croix and Bens for the funeral of former-President William Urskabau, spoke briefly on the passing of the Queen Mother, calling her "a devoted public servant and a mother to the nation." Grönberg will be one of Caspiaa's lead delegates for the funeral of her Majesty.

Caspiaa formally motions for CCA to consider peacekeeping mission in Qahazar

Viitaniemi - Foreign Minister Mathias Ronning, alongside his Zamastanian counterpart Secretary Chantelle Carson, have presented the Coalition of Crown Albatross with a proposal to authorize an international peacekeeping mission in Qahazar as soon as WEDA and ANS aerial campaigns conclude. While a timetable for the mission has not been specified, and by all expert opinion will not be announced until guarantees of the self-proclaimed PRQ's defensive capabilities are removed, a peacekeeping mission would establish a buffer zone between Zalluabedi government-held territory, pro-democracy rebel-held territory, and the Qahazar peninsula. The proposal includes a series of issues which will likely be debated at length in the General Assembly, such as an internationally monitored referendum to install an interim government although no such faction currently operates with efficiency in Qahazar.

The proposal considers that the situation in the Qahazar peninsula constitutes a threat to international peace and stability, and WEDA and the ANS seek to convince the CCA to establish a peacekeeping mission in the region with the aim of reaching a peaceful political settlement in the region. The proposal aims to deploy the force for an initial period of twelve months, further deciding that the arms embargo on Qahazar should not apply to weapons and military equipment intended for the peacekeeping mission.

The proposal also urges and demands all parties in the region observe the ceasefire and ensure the safety of the mission, calling again on the PRQ, military, and rebel parties to co-operate with the peacekeepers. It also requested international support for the force, particularly with regards to the transit of personnel and equipment.

Syraranto will not seek to rejoin the SBU, yet...

Three years, four months, one week, and one day since the war began, President Yannis Kormoulis says fighting between armed factions has ceased.

President Yannis Kormoulis says that Syraranto will not seek to rejoin the Sotoan Basin Union, at least for now, as though a peace settlement and power sharing agreement between the many factions formally ended the country's devastating civil war last week, there is "too much political tension to take a leap like this," he said. Kormoulis stated that while Syraranto might one day seek to rejoin, and that the benefits to once again being a member state are plenty, the current climate of easing into a new democracy needs to be tested and tried first. Syraranto was a founding member of the SBU, but expelled from the multinational organization in the summer of 2020 at the outbreak of the civil war.

"We need to let the new normal become normal before we rush to rejoin the SBU," Kormoulis stated. "I see many benefits in rejoining, as do my allies, but many in other factions have expressed their dissatisfaction with the SBU, which in their shoes I can understand their points whether I disagree or not. For the time being, our interest is to accept help from the SBU, accept guidance, but a full rejoining of our membership is unwise at our current state."

Telgado meets with Rademacher in Laitstadt for trade talks as her reelection campaign stumbles ahead

Image
Chancellor Telgado arriving to meet with PM Rademacher

Chancellor Kennedy Telgado met with Prime Minister Rademacher in Laitstadt this morning to discuss extending trade relations between the two countries along the vital Lakeland corridor, the border between the two countries which in recent years has seen a wider expansion of industrialization and resource development. The two leaders also discussed the ongoing Besmenian military operations against the self-proclaimed People's Republic of Qahazar in the embattled Zalluabedi peninsula, and Rademacher signed onto an agreement that would allow Besmenian defense contractors to produce the Utobanian-designed Hartling-9 and Houtren-4 multirole fighters for their own distribution and use. The summit comes as positive news in Nortua seems to keep showing after an otherwise difficult few months, as the civil war in Syraranto has formally ended and refugee policies are beginning to ease, and as recovery efforts in the Pian Islands move ahead full throttle.

"Besmenia is our largest trading partner and we must take advantage of the opportunities economically presented to us both," Telgado said. "We are working to be mutually beneficial in this regard."

Telgado is aiming to boost her profile on the international stage after a rather tumultuous second term, as she faces reelection in the next month against Conservative Party candidate Levi Brauner. Brauner has been raising historic funds in campaigning the past month, taking advantage of what he and his party call "reckless and potentially catastrophic" economic policies by Telgado. Telgado and her supporters have called the expansion of heavily sanctioned but widespread economic investments an important step in growing Utobania's annual GDP while also allowing for the use of public funds in larger infrastructure ambitions, but critics say the rate at which the investments are being put in place and the scope of them cannot be maintained should a global recession occur, as looming warnings in markets have shown.

Brauner has proposed similar widespread economic investments, though the key difference being far less government regulation and oversight, which the Conservative Party says will grow competition and stave off the damage a potential recession would have to both the federal government and smaller businesses.

Verdusan security forces kill suspected RLA militant in Yerusalahm, preventing attack

Verdusan security killed a suspected RLA militant near the Rajit quarter of Yerusalahm on Saturday, days after a series of threats by the militant group had been uncovered and reportedly prevented by authorities. Prime Minister Yahya Deeb Nida applauded the rapid response of the security forces, who engaged an armed individual carrying multiple knives and a Beleroskov-modeled rifle, and soon thereafter discovered explosives in the suspect's car parked nearby. The incident occurred only a few dozen meters from the entrance to the Rajit quarter of Yerusalahm, an often-packed intersection for worshippers transiting in and out of the historic center. At the time when the incident occurred, the area was filled with Jewish worshipers who had left their respective places of worship following the end of Hanukkah.

"The quick and decisive response to what could have been a deadly incident against the Jewish and peaceful Rajit communities in Verdusa saved many lives today," said Prime Minister Nida. "Our government continues to seek to end the militancy of the RLA, and we will continue protecting those of all faiths."

The incident comes amid a period of tension in the Holy City, namely as the anniversary of the deadly battle for the city during the civil war is marked. In 1988, RLA militants carried out a campaign to try and seize the city, and in the process, thousands of people from the Jewish, Christian, and Muslim quarters were killed. The Rajit community, though not responsible for the attacks, have faced discrimination and protests from the other quarters due to the RLA being an extreme fundamentalist group.

State Funeral of Former-President Urskabau
Urskabau was buried at the National Cemetary in Saint Elmenau.

SAINT ELMENAU - Thousands of people have been attending the state funeral in Saint Elmenau of Former-President William Urskabau, who died last week. Mr Urskabau' flag-draped coffin was carried from his palace to the city's Central Square for a ceremony, then buried at the National Cemetery. Dozens of foreign leaders and dignitaries, including many heads of WEDA and South Adulan nations, were present. Mr Urskabau died at the age of 70 in Beresa, following a series of health concerns.

Urskabau was elected president in 2008 and was credited for bringing development and growth to SCB. The state funeral - SCB's first for a leader in more than 50 years - began in Central Square after a journey of about an hour-and-a-half from Mr Urskabau' official residence. After several hours, the coffin was taken to the city's Holy Devine Cathedral in heavy rain for the service, and afterwards was taken to the National Cemetary. The casket was lowered into a grave and covered with stone slabs, as wailing crowds jostled around the burial site. The coffin was accompanied by hundreds of mourners, including Mr Urskabau' widow Abella Khamis, who was seen being comforted by officials, Urskabau's two sons, and several grandchildren.

Among the dignitaries attending the funeral were Zamastanian president Sabine Armitage, Emmirian President Akram Sulaiman, Albarinean Chancellor Sadie Melhaven, Qolaysian President Elihu Saing, Caspiaan Prime Minister Tullia Grönberg, and Quetanan President Emília Medeiros. Many of them paid tribute to the former head of state.

Sulaiman said: "With his energy, vision and fight for the achievement of a thriving and prosperous southern Adula, the late William Urskabau ... was a force... on which this region depended in these last 15 years."

President Saing said: "We are proud of Urskabau, and the leadership he provided on issues affecting the continent and around the globe."

Melhaven, who was widely considered one of Urskabau's closest allies on the global stage, praised his vision and foresight. "He wasn't just brilliant, he wasn't just a relentless negotiator and a formidable debater, he wasn't just a thirsty consumer of knowledge - he was uncommonly wise, able to see the big picture and the long game, even when others would allow immediate pressures to overwhelm sound judgement," she said.

Haduastan's Prime Minister, Sartaj Bali, also made his first visit out of the country since the beginning of Elastan's invasion four months ago, paying tribute to a leader who he called "a great friend and advocate for Haduastan."

Feyt Ayat forces have made major gains into Tuim, as WEDA and ANS aerial campaigns continue to bombard the PRQ

Feyt Ayat rebel fighters near Tuim as smoke rises after heavy military shelling
Feyt Ayat rebel forces have begun moving into the port city of Tuim, a significant stronghold of PRQ-linked fighters, in preparation for the ground forces to expand a campaign to push the loyalists of el-Dar Moussa out of the Qahazar peninsula. The battle over the city, Zalluabed's fourth-largest, is part of a push by the WEDA/ANS-led intervention to defeat the Kubani Unit armed group after last month's region-wide drone attacks. “If they [the rebel forces] manage to capture Tuim, this could be the beginning of the end for General Moussa,” a WEDA spokesperson is reported saying. Tuim is a crucial base for the Kubani Unit financially and logistically.

The rebel forces targeted an arms store, several mounted gun positions, and a road block set up by the Kubani Unit as WEDA and ANS aircraft covered the approach. The rebel troops are moving closer to Tuim in preparation of an assault to take over the city and plan to do so by the end of the week.

Several military commanders withdraw from Haduastan as protests intensify

ERITBA - Several prominent military commanders have ordered the withdrawal of their forces from Haduastan in what President Bahadar Panwar called "a traitorous act," and marking a notable shift in the increasingly strained relationship between the executive and the military. For the past two months, many commanders have complained that they are not receiving adequate supplies and that the central military command in Eritba has pushed them to commit to "unrealistic goals on the battlefield." While most battalions deployed in the operations in Haduastan have remained in place, namely in the west along the Vakayada province defending their long front against counterattacks, many commanders from Nidayar and Batti have withdrawn and returned to Elastan. The commander with most notoriety, Silmi Hassan, said that his forces are moving back into Elastan in order to "express dissatisfaction with the president."

Some Elastani government officials called the unprompted withdrawal of forces along the front a "coup in the making" and a "stark rebuttal of duty." Within the past few days, Elastani military personnel have been observed joining protests alongside the nationwide anti-government and anti-war demonstrations, which have demanded the resignation of President Panwar and most government officials, as well as an end to the war in Haduastan. Mediation talks between demonstrators and the Panwar government have failed to produce results even with the moderation of neighboring governments.

Panwar has released several recorded statements demanding that the forces who have withdrawn return to their posts and continue the campaign as it began in July, but by all indications none of those commanders have. Several commanders who were stationed in Nidayar, where the war started, are the first to have reentered Elastan. There are reports of columns moving towards Eritba along the southward highways.

Tanks seen in capital as Panwar demands protestors stand down

ERITBA - Tanks have been spotted entering Eritba from the main highway south of Habamila, the route from which military forces withdrawing from Haduastan have been approaching the capital. There have been rumors that a coup is underway by a faction of officers who deserted their posts along the front lines this weekend and returned to Elastan despite President Panwar's demands. Panwar's office ordered the columns to stop moving towards the capital and that all present security forces in Eritba prevent them from approaching the executive compounds or government offices, but it appears as though some of the tank columns are being joined by the anti-government protestors. Since 10 PM local time, President Panwar has not been heard from.

The tanks reportedly belong to the 54th Mechanized Battalion, commanded by General Silmi Hassan who earlier in the day released several messages on social platforms detailing his frustrations with President Panwar and other government officials.

COUP UNDERWAY - SOME MILITARY GENERALS SIDE WITH PRO-DEMOCRACY DEMONSTRATORS AND SEIZE GOVERNMENT OFFICES
PRESIDENT PANWAR HAS FLED TO YUAN

ERITBA - In a rapidly escalating series of events, several factions of the Elastani military have sided with pro-democracy demonstrators and have taken control of government buildings throughout the capital of Eritba and announced that President Bahadar Panwar has fled the country in his private jet. General Silmi Hassan, the apparent leader in the coup, authorized his forces to release opposition leaders Hossein Usavi and Mayadav Roubi from prison, where they had been held for nearly a month. Usavi and Roubi both appeared on state-run television, saying that they had taken interim command of the government and that Hassan had been named the chief security minister, while remaining Elastani forces in Haduastan are being told to stand down. Nationwide, there are celebrations with hundreds of thousands of people celebrating in the streets, though there are reported clashes with regional security authorities still loyal to the Panwar regime. Several governors and regional officials have been detained.

"This is a new day," Usavi said, "the dictator is no longer forcing us into submission. Our great nation will break our shackles."

A transitional government is being installed as the coup's leadership hurries to maintain order and prevent a civil war breaking out between the military factions who supported the pro-democracy movement, and those who are radically opposed to it and staunchly on the side of Panwar's regime. Namely the Elastani forces who remained in Haduastan, specifically Vakayada province, are fiercely loyal to the Panwar regime and have been accused of using chemical warfare against both the Haduastani army and civilian populations. A commander in the region tore into the coup's leaders via a radio communication, saying that the withdrawal and "betrayal" had left him and his forces surrounded.

Usavi will be taking interim control of the presidential authorities, with Roubi leading the transitional government organization until such time has passed to attempt democratic referendums. As of now, with the coup being fresh, there is no time table, but that has not hindered the excitement of the pro-democracy movement.

"We've been waiting for this day for nearly 22 years," said one demonstrator, celebrating in Sarphosan on Monday morning. "This is amazing news, simply amazing news."

Panwar has reportedly flown to eastern Yuan, where the Communist Party is granting him asylum.

Elastani coup provides open front for Haduastani forces
A widespread withdrawal of Elastani military forces contributed to the ouster of Panwar, who fled to Yuan

Home | HADUASTAN | International | Politics | Entertainment | Science

Prime Minister Sartaj Bali, returning to Lalkot from Saint Croix and Bens, welcomed the news of the apparant ouster of Bahadar Panwar in a pro-democracy coup in Elastan, which was backed by factions of the military who withdrew from southern Haduastan over the past few days. Generals from the southeastern fronts in Batti and Nidayar pulled their forces back into Elastan after prolonged disagreements and frustrations with Panwar and his regime officials. Columns of tanks and armored personnel carriers arrived in Eritba and sided with the pro-democracy demonstrators, released opposition leaders from prison, and took control of government offices all while Bahadar Panwar reportedly fled to eastern Yuan on a privately chartered flight. Bali stated that Haduastani forces were beginning to move back into the regions which have been left largely undefended by the remaining Elastani forces, most of whom are still loyal to the ousted regime.

Bali indicated that while it would take time to mend the wounds of the actions of many Elastani military units who participated in the violent and brutal conflict along the southern regions, that he and many Haduastanis could absolve their actions due to their "bravery in denying the commands of madmen, and removing their influence at the root," saying that the coup was a "positive development in an otherwise unstable story." Bali also indicated that he and his government would be willing to enter into negotiations with the interim government set up by pro-democratic activists Hossein Usavi and Mayadav Roubi.

There are still units of Elastani forces in Haduastan who are continuing to holdout against counter assaults despite their isolation from Elastan now that the eastern front has largely softened. Namely, in the Vakayada province where reports of chemical warfare use had made international headlines and drew in the direct warnings of no-fly-zone protection by WEDA earlier this year, Elastani forces there have refused to give up even as their Atylestan and Barangadesh allies have withdrawn.

Bali issued a statement saying that the Haduastani government would open a neutral corridor to allow Elastani forces in Vakayada to safely return to Elastan without consequence if they cease hostilities immediately.

"They're fighting a war of nonsense now," Bali said. "What are they fighting for aside themselves?"

ImagePanwar arrives in Louhezhan as Elastan falls to coup
Yuan's embassy is closing in Eritba until further notice, says foreign minister.

SHANGHAN - President Qin Chen has granted President Bahadar Panwar of Elastan asylum in Louhezhan, Eastern Yuan, as a coup led by demonstrators and rogue military officials opposed to his government has taken over the functions of the country. The Alliance of Central and Western Ausianan Cooperation (ACWAC) has formally suspended Elastan's membership as a result of the coup, and Yuan's embassy in Eritba has closed indefinitely according to the foreign ministry. Panwar's private aircraft landed at Louhezhan International Airport early on Monday morning, bringing to an end his nearly 22 years in power and transitioning Elastan from the prominent power in central Ausiana to a nation struggling to cope with the sudden influx of turmoil brought about by an end to its relationship with ACWAC.

"The People's Republic of Yuan firmly denounces the apparent coup which has occurred in Elastan over the past many hours," a statement from the Foreign Ministry read. "The government has granted his Excellency, President Bahadar Panwar, as well as several of his government's officials, asylum status in Louhezhan overnight as they have been forced to leave the country with the risk of their lives.

Yuan had been the prominent supplier of military equipment and hardware to Elastan over the course of the war in Haduastan. Yuan's blockade of Haduastan earlier in the war was the result of continued cooperation militarily between the two nations, but as of this moment there is no such diplomatic cooperation underway. Yuan's government was quick to blame foreign actors for supporting the coup, saying the sophistication required to pull off the coordination in such short time "could not have simply been the actions of a few unassociated and misguided military generals."

Airstrikes kill dozens as Joraistan withdraws
President Gopal Mahanta Sardar says "our operation is ending in Haduastan"

Image

CHARUNI - Joraistani government warplanes targeted a eastern Haduastani town during a strategic withdrawal on Sunday afternoon, hitting a gas station and triggering an explosion that killed at least 55 people, opposition forces said. It’s the latest salvo in the bloody war that has shifted drastically in recent weeks and especially in the last two days, as Elastan's government collapsed amid a coup by anti-war factions. Joraistan has authorized the withdrawal of its forces, who were subsequently left as the only forces on their front. Dozens were wounded in the airstrike, as local Haduastani officials distributed videos of the site, a flat and barren landscape which showed black smoke, charred and destroyed vehicles, holes in the ground and people milling around corpses. President Gopal Mahanta Sardar denied the strike targeted civilians, saying that Haduastani artillery was in the area, though this is being disputed.

The strike comes a day after a coup in Elastan ousted Bahadar Panwar and forced him to flee to Yuan, effectively ending Elastani military operations in Haduastan and, furthermore, the rest of the ACWAC operations.

Sardar said that the withdrawal was due to mounting losses in the stagnant frontlines, and that without support from the Elastani military, maintaining the territory that they had would be extremely costly. "Our operation is ending in Haduastan," he said. The Joraistan embassy in Elastan is also closing.

Teresta government freezes Panwar assets as Honaldo applauds coup

SODILLA - The Terestan government has frozen assets in three banks belonging to accounts owned by ousted-President of Elastan Bahadar Panwar, who fled into exile in Yuan as pro-democracy factions toppled his regime of 22 years and took control of the country. President Saai Honaldo applauded the acts of pro-democracy demonstrators, who had been protesting the Panwar regime and its war in Haduastan for the past few months, and said that the opportunity presented to the people of Elastan was a "fresh start to a new and bright future."

Teresta had remained largely neutral in regards to its government's public statements about the war, as they held decent relations with Elastan. However, as the protests against Panwar had been faced with violent crackdowns, Honaldo and other officials spoke out and demanded that Panwar enter mediation talks with the demonstrators. Those talks lasted for three weeks, moderated by several neutral Ausianan countries, but eventually becoming so heated that the Sisiki delegation pulled out of negotiations.

Teresta's government offered indications that they would seek to improve diplomacy with the new interim government of Elastan, but urged that the transition would need to be handled with caution as many in the military still side with Panwar's regime.

CARDOZA - Authorities have captured one of Paraboca's last great crime bosses, President Oriol Miguélez said Saturday night. Accused drug lord Limon “El Loco” Bates was captured in San Cristobal, Paraboca, Miguélez said. Bates is accused of alliances with paramilitaries in addition to drug trafficking crimes over a period of more than 20 years. “He is the last of the great (crime) bosses. This is very forceful blow,” Miguélez said in televised remarks. San Cristobal, a small town of around 2,000 people, is located near the border of West Chanchajilla. “This is a very important step toward the security that we want to achieve in this country,” Miguélez said.

The operation to capture "El Loco" came about with collaboration between Parabocan, East Chanchajillan, and Zamastanian officials, Miguélez said.

“I want to thank the governments of our allies for this great collaboration that has produced this capture,” Miguélez said. Paraboca's interior minister will discuss Bates' capture and “the seizure of more than a ton of drugs” in a news conference Monday morning, the nation’s information ministry said in a statement.

In October, Parabocan authorities said they found more than Z$29 million in cash stashed in two homes that Bates owned. At the time, the defense minister called it the “biggest drug-money seizure operation in the country’s history.”

Cournne Museum opens new Islamic Art wing

The Cournne's Islamic Art wing.

AASSILLIT - Aassillit's famed Cournne museum on Saturday opened to the public a new wing of Islamic art in a bid to improve knowledge of a religion often viewed with suspicion in the non-Muslim world. Costing nearly 100 million Nortas (Z131 million), it is funded by the Versenian government and supported by handsome endowments from Emmiria, Sulifa, Mulfulira, and Tiqal. About 3,000 precious works from the seventh to the 19th centuries are spread across 3,000 square metres (33,000 square feet) over two levels of the former palace. Inaugurated by President Arthur Vanberson, the new wing holds 18,000 treasures from an area stretching across Adula and includes the oldest love letter in the Islamic world.

One of the first visitors Saturday said the opening came at an opportune time "with everything that is happening in the world", stressing that the exhibits show "Islam as a refined, peaceful civilisation".

"I hope it will open our minds to the passionate past of Islamic civilisation, but also to the complex of Muslims who believe they are not understood," said the retired teacher of art.

Versenia is home to at least 1.8 million Muslims and leaders of the community say incidents of Islamophobia are on the rise against a background of confrontation with the authorities and rising suspicion of Muslims. The Cournne opening comes as demonstrations are sweeping Muslim countries to protest a crudely made internet video by Versenian school kids mocking Islam, and Versenian cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed.

Sophie Maiou, the head of the department of Islamic arts at the Aassillit museum, said the aim of the new wing was to show "Islam with a capital I."

"We must give back the word Islam its full glory... and not leave it to the jihadists to tarnish it," she said at a press preview earlier this week.

Set in a courtyard of commissioned in the 18th century, the new wing is housed under a giant undulating gold-coloured aluminium canopy pierced with tiny holes to let daylight filter through and change the mood and the ambience with the sun's rays.
