Jeremy Jaffacake's double black garbage bag ninja idea was a genius one. Take a binbag, turn it upside-down, scissor out holes in the corners and the very top, then burrow into it and use it like a very cheap rain jacket. Rip open the second bin-bag, fold it in on itself, put it over your head like a flappy plastic snood, unfold front bit over your mouth and the back bit over the top of your head and, voila, a tight hood with a letterbox you could see through, and now not only was most of you going to withstand the rain, but nobody could tell that the ridiculously dressed person was actually you, and it helpfully hide the name on your bib.

He walked from the hotel to the start-finish line and decided that this eighty cent disposable ninja rain jacket was the best idea he'd had in weeks, not least because of the amount of people around him who looked to be getting soaked to the bone while he stayed dry, but because it was the only good idea he'd had in weeks. Since agreeing to this whole thing anyway.

Marathons are stupid. He'd always believed that to be true. The first refuge of the mid-life crisis for anyone not rich enough for an open-top sports car or not desperate enough to pretend any attractive woman under 25 was worth spending a week's wages on every Friday night. In Jeremy's view, anyone south of the half-your-age-plus-seven rule wasn't worth five minutes of his time, and hadn't been since around the time he'd turned about fifty, some decades ago.

Of all the big, worthy sporting achievements - the triathlon, the mountain, the black belt, the gold medal, the 147, the 300 and the full-206 Downhill Coo-Runnings - a marathon was the easiest to attain. Start off jogging four hundred and twenty two metres without stopping, and find a way to add 10% to that every week until you can keep jogging for thirty or so without stopping, then buy a vest, shorts, socks and shoes in colours that aren't even on speaking terms, let alone complimentary, strap a number to your chest, rub yourself in lube and pretend doing four days worth of steps in one morning is something worth even telling a friend about, let alone newsworthy enough to broadcast via t-shirt at an otherwise enjoyable barbecue. If you'd told Jeremy Jaffacake, last year, that he'd be doing one himself, he'd likely have told you to 'do one' too. He would have even balked at the idea of attending. Standing and watching ten thousand smug forty-something prematurely wrinkly chartered surveyors wearing four hundred dollars worth of last year's olympians' wardrobe was hardly his idea of a fun, coming somewhere below both Having a Hangover and Not Having a Hangover as an utter waste of a Sunday morning.

As he neared the line, the crowd of scrawny try-hards thickened. They all clearly needed about five square metres each to do their outlandish warm-up routines, and each was making do with less than half that. Jeremy made his way through the elbows and knees to the dilapidated phone box he'd agreed to meet Rubio at, and saw his erstwhile friend huddled in a thick hoodie holding in one hand an umbrella and in the other a small plastic bag full of brightly coloured objects.

"You look ridiculous" said Rubio, as Jeremy approached.
"How did you know it was me?" Said Jeremy, his voice flapping through his plastic ninja headgear.
"Namaste" said Rubio. "My soul recognises yours". He held the palm of his hand to face Jeremy. Jeremy responded by holding the palm of his own hand up at Rubio, only with two fingers kept down.
"Yamumste" said Jeremy, in response. "These fingers smell of your m.."
"I brought you your froot shoots" said Rubio, interrupting.
"They're gels" said Jeremy
"Your little snack things" said Rubio
"It's called 'fuel' I think" said Jeremy. "I'm supposed to shove one of these into my face every five kilometres and then, so I gather from training, spend the next five kilometres trying to wipe the goo off my hand before the wasps find me"
"Okay" said Rubio. "Anyway I'm going to keep hold of them"
"What"
"Rather than you carrying them I figured, y'know" said Rubio, glancing to his left.
"Is that a bike" said Jeremy
"I figured I'd find you every few kilometres or so, give you some "fuel", advice, encouragement, it's a long way, and carrying this shit with you it just going to weigh you down"
"You sure you can keep up?" Said Jeremy, with a wink. "You said it yourself, everyone you know who does a running race, no matter how fast they go, always gets overtaken by some skinny-ass old boy who has access to, what did you call it?"
"Fogey Speed" said Rubio. "And yeah, that's a whole thing, but only with those seventy year-olds who, you know, have been doing this for the last sixty years, probably ran track in college, all that stuff, not three-hundred year-olds who, until recently, considered his most athletic feat to be his ability to eat an entire vindaloo without needing a sip of lager"
"That absolutely *should* be an olympic sport." retorted Jeremy. "Mate I don't even sweat during a fahl these days. I'm like that RL States pervert prince you like so much. Except I wouldn't associated with anyone who claimed "Ghislaine" was a perfectly reasonable name a human might have"
"Look, I'll see you every few kilometres, all right? Make sure you're still, y'know, alive. And, y'know, 'looking your best'"
"You find out where the cameras are?" Asked Jeremy
"More or less. They move, but they're stationed in all the places you'd expect. Look. If you see me, stop, walk, have a bite of whatever I'm holding, then you can saunter past the camera looking relaxed and, y'know, electable"
"Got it" said Jeremy, who was beginning his warm-up routine. Rubio watched as Jeremy began to make outlandish shapes with his arms and legs. He looked like a heron who particularly sucked at charades trying to mime the abstract concept of 'tenacity' to a horse, only the heron didn't know what tenacity was and assumed it was a brand of suppository.
"Are you sure this is the only way to do this?" Asked Rubio, looking down the road, seeing a brief glimpse of the river in the distance. "It's... a bloody long way. 42 kilometres. Six hours. One side of Cathair to the other."
"Still faster than taking the bus along the same route" said Jeremy. "And it's like you said, if I want the job, I need to get my name out there"
"Jeremy Jaffacake, you're Jeremy sodding Jaffacake, your name is already "out there""
"Yeah but in a good way, Breakfast TV kind of way"
"And you're sure you want the job?" Asked Rubio. "The Project Museum is going well, you've got the podcast, all the cushy jobs at the Herald still go your way, TV work when you can be bothered. You've tried, y'know..." Rubio leaned in towards Jeremy, conspiratorially, "..politics.. before"
"You don't fancy me a politician" said Jeremy, doing a forwards lunge, wrapped in two black plastic bags, orange running-shoe clad feet either side of a slowly expanding puddle, turquoise split shorts rippling in the breeze.
"I don't fancy you at all" said Rubio
"It's not really politics though, is it?" said Jeremy, rhetorically. "FFA President, that was politics. WCC president, that was politics. Being a president of a country, a prime minister, that'd be politics. This? This is just dressing up like a twat and announcing the beginning of something stupid" said Jeremy.
"The Mayorship of Cathair is exactly like starting to run a marathon, in that respect" said Rubio
"Exactly" said Jeremy. "And like you said. A good photo here, raising money for a charity, being an inspiration for people because I can put one leg in front of the other for entirely too fucking long, all while annoying the kind of motorist who thinks he deserves to be able to drive through the centre of a major city, it's win win win win win."
"Apart from you have to actually run a marathon"
"It'll be fine" said Jeremy. "I did almost most of my training"
"Look" said Rubio. "Either way. Me. Bike. Carrying your 'fuel'. I'll see you just before each camera guy. Are you wearing your narf top?"
Jeremy pulled up his bin-bag to show a bright yellow vest with a picture of a friendly dog shouting "NARF" at nothing in particular, with "National Animal Rescue Fund" written just below. "Raising a few grand for them. Turns out people were quite keen on me to run really far away from them if it meant a few PTSD dogs got better food"
"Well at least some good may come from this" said Rubio. "And I suspect you needn't even have told them about the dogs"

An annoyingly loud DJ garbled the phrase '...in exactly one minute's time!' at the end of a sentence neither were listening to. The throng piled closer towards the start-finish line, still a hundred metres away from where Jeremy was standing.

"Wish me luck" said Jeremy
"I do honestly wish you luck" said Rubio, wheeling his bike around to face the opposite direction. "But I tell you, I still think this is a stupid idea"
"We'll see who's laughing when we get rid of that bypass and use the concrete to build a statue of me punching Rami Niblick in his stupid face"
"A noble cause" said Rubio. "But you're aware that if you're photographed wheezing next to an aid station with shit down your legs it might have the opposite effect to what you were intending"
"Why would I have shit down my legs" said Jeremy. "Weird mind, you've got"
"Happens" said Rubio. "You went before you came out, right?" asked Rubio. "You weren't too busy knotting together than bin-bag cagoule to do a pre-race poop, right?"

Rubio noted Jeremy's face fade slightly from confident to worried as the old hack disappeared into the throng of lycra and headbands. A hundred yards away, the incumbent Mayor of Cathair fired a starting pistol into the air.

It would cause one runner to abruptly drop out of the race when it landed.

Together we Are...

For the first time, Aleirave found themselves the third seeds in World Cup Qualifying, and for Haulafo Paka'ula, that was a sign of a potentially bright future to come. Sure, only the top two in this format would have a chance of moving on, but the chances of a third seed, through solid play, reaching top two were actually pretty decent. All it would take was a decent draw...

Usually at this time of the year, Haulafo would be in one of the host nations, joined by his friends Coach Kenny Morgan and Josh Seametzle from the mainland, watching the qualifying draw live. Not this year, however, as the finalized pots would be mailed to him instead. It was a little old-school, but he liked it. Took a lot of the stress and distraction of the live event away, instead just being able to read what he needed without worrying about the rest.

"Here you are Haulafo, the day's mail!"
"Thank you so much Anton!" he replied to the mailman. Today's mail was special, as it would have the coveted draw in it. The next summer's matches were in this envelope, and nothing but surprises lie within.

The first things he checked, of course, were the top two seeds. These would be the teams that the Seagulls would have to outperform in order to reach the playoffs, and it was crucial they had their battle plan ready.

Baker Park... and Cardenao.

Alright, that was decent. Baker Park were probably a lock to qualify like they did literally every single other time they tried, but Cardenao were the lowest-ranked Pot 2 team. They were reachable.

However, Haulafo's feelings would get a lot more confused when he saw the name of the Pot 4 team the islanders would be playing. They had drawn the second highest-ranked team in that pot, they had drawn...

Eshialand. They would once again be playing their old pals from the mainland, just like they had in their last Cup of Harmony.

Ring! Ring!

Haulafo could guess just who was on the line. He picked it up without even checking the caller ID and answered "Kenny!"
"Kenny? I'm Rifeho the Tire Professor, here to remind you your car is ready at my shop--"
"Oops, sorry about that, I'll be over there tonight!"
"Alright then, have a nice day..."

Click!

Maybe he should've checked before assuming.

Ring! Ring!

Okay, this time it was Kenny. No mistakes this time.

"Kenny!"
"So I'm guessing you've seen the draw, Haulafo?"
"Of course I have..."
"Pleasant surprise to see your name on the game list... how'd you even end up a pot above us anyway?"
"It's the ol' island touch, Kenny. We've just got what it takes. Excited for us to meet on the pitch again?"

"Of course I am, of course I am... and I bet the team is too. After that disaster AOCAF, we need something to look forward to, and the Eshian Derby? That's the greatest thing since sliced bread."

"Don't you mean the greatest thing since coconut sandwiches?"

"To each their own Haulafo, to reach their own..." Kenny replied, trying to hold back his disgust. Coconut sandwiches were NOT his thing, and he didn't even wanna think about them. "And hey--"

"Yeah?"
"May the best team win. Heck, may the best team qualify. If one of us ends up finally making it, I don't care which one of us, that'll be a win in my book. You've earned it a lot more than we have, and I'd just be happy to be a part of the journey."

"We'll see what happens... until then, see ya in Eshialand City."
"See ya Haulafo."

All my posts are IC unless I either explicitly say so or they're on NSG.

Sidenote, if I'm posting on NSG, DM me to make sure if I'm alright. Something's probably gone wrong for me.

The Huayramarcan Football Federation, in a quite usual protocol, has decided to elect the venues that will host matches of the Condors, the Senior National Team for the 95th World Cup Qualifier Cycle that will host nations of the likes of: Delaclava, Poafmersia, Cabo Azure among others. In what many fans and sports pundits consider to be one of, if not the most difficult that the Huayramarcan National Team has had in a qualifying cycle, that coming after a disappointing zero-pointer appearance in the World Cup Finals that ended with a rebounding bid at CAFA that resulted in a win and a third place in the Confederations Cup.

With the rollercoaster of frustration and victory that the National Team has suffered (and enjoyed), the preparations for the next cycle have begun with the picking of stadia, which tend to reflect the different geographical and cultural regions that the Plurinational Republic has in its quite big territory. A tradition that was born under the idea of regional equity, and as a way to minimise tensions among fans for watching the NT, and the burden of traveling through the perilous roads of the nation, the HFF hosted this event in a hotel and with some of the delegates of the Provincial Football Associations that have stadia duly approved by the HFF to host the National Team.

Ricardo Quispe, the new president of the Huayramarcan Football Federation emphasised that this tradition is “the way the Huayramarcan Football Federation renews its commitment to bring world class football to everybody, in an effort to make the practice of this sport a nationwide affair and as means to motivate younger generations to take part of the football pyramid.” He then noted “Aside from the different advantages that we enjoy due to our unique geography, we also want to get football close to everybody, to avoid travel burden for the fans, and make local business flourish with the income that is generated by the thousands of fans who flock to the stadia every single match.”

Considering the rather reduced nature of the format for this World Cup Qualifying, that only has eight teams per group (across 20 different ones), means that every nation will host 7 matches only, instead of the usual 10 or even 11 matches that have been the norm for the last five years. This means that, in order to ensure the most egalitarian distribution possible, the continental regions (Costa, Sierra and Selva) will host two matches only for this rotation, while the Islands will host a single match. The decision to select venues is that each region will host a top-class team, then middle or lowed ranked teams in other venues from the region.

After discussing some technical aspects, it was defined that the Coastal Region will host the games against Poafmersia and Astograth in Guayaquil and Lima respectively (Matchdays 6 and 11) in an afternoon timing for the duel of Guayaquil and an evening one for the second match against Astograth. Bryan Tello said, in regards of this pick “Guayaquil and Lima are always great venues for teams that aren’t used to hot weather, to humidity, that’s why we can take some advantage, as we are used to that kind of conditions. We growth under those, so we can get used as fast as possible and take care of it.”

The Sierra has taken the matches against Kewlz (Matchday 5) in San Ignacio de la Frontera, a city that hosts a World Cup Qualifier for the first time since the 92nd cycle, and the usual venue of the Estadio Nacional of Chuquiago will host the last Matchday (14) against Cabo Azure, in a situation that could point out to a hard-fought match, where having some extra advantage won’t harm Huayramarca. Ian Mamani talked about this, he said that “Taking rivals to the altitude will greatly help Huayramarca, having the advantage of playing at a fortress in the middle of the Sierra will be significant, as the rivals aren’t used to that kind of conditions, while it can also benefit for some shooting attempts, as the ball flies faster and effortlessly in the altitude of Chuquiago.”

Although the altitude has been in the past, harshly criticized by many fans and National Teams alike, it’s a condition that allows Huayramarca play some of its finest football, aside from letting people from a usually neglected region to enjoy sport and some of the finest teams in the Multiverse, such as Nephara (Cycle 85) and Farfadillis (Cycle 93) that have played there in the past. President Augusto Buendía, back when he was in charge, said that “Banning, or attempting to ban playing at altitude, would be a crime against the Huayramarcan people and culture.” That’s why playing in this zone of the nation is so enshrined as something valuable for the players and fans.

In the Jungle region, the Condors will face the The Kytler Peninsulae in the World Cup Qualifier opener at Pando. This venue, which will host the Qualifiers for its fourth cycle, has been witness of some decisive victories such as the 4-0 against Naixi in the last Qualifier, a victory that helped Huayramarca get into the first position and secure, virtually then, a qualification for the World Cup Finals as the first placed team in the Group. Meanwhile, in the reedition of a match that happened in World Cup 85 (and ended in a 2-5 defeat for the Condors), the HFF has decided to take the Delaclav National Team to Sechura, the oil capital of Huayramarca; although it wasn’t an appreciated decision, as people is aware of the precedent against the Delaclavs, the HFF is confident that this time “history will be different.”

The isles will host a match against Vielfaltig in the 9th matchday, probably an early evening match considering the existing time offset between the San Carlos Archipelago and the Huayramarcan mainland, especially the Sechuran Panhandle.

Orlando Mina considers that “No matter the stadium, he expects people to continue being as supportive as usual in the stadia across the nation. The Team will need their support to achieve victories and a decent participation for the upcoming Qualifier; and they can act as the 12th player and exert pressure against the rivals, to intimidate and make the Condors feel stronger than usual with their support.”

A full guide of the venues, for tourists that might want to travel and watch their National Team against Huayramarca, will be given in the following spoilers:

Useful Information and Stadia:
You might want to check some maps, as Huayramarca is quite a massive country in terms of surface and distances. Click here for a Biome Official Map and here for a Cities Official Map.

Before introducing the stadia, there’s some handy information for away fans who might visit Huayramarca. As said before, this nation has a quite complex geography and some long distances to travel for away fans, since there are four international airports: Huayramarca International Airport, located near Huayramarca Metropolitan District at the highlands; the Jorge Guerra International Airport in Lima, on the coast; the International Airport of the Archipelago on Puerto San Carlos (isles) and the Libertador Suárez International Airport of Sechura (jungle). Those airports might provide you with connections for other destinations such as Guayaquil, San Ignacio de la Frontera and Nauta if you want to travel safely. If you are a risk taker and lover of adventure, rent an AWD vehicle and go up mountains or driving through them which is a complete odyssey due to the risks caused by the Andean geography itself, or the safe-to drive-coasts or through the jungle, which can be desolated to drive in case of mechanic failure.

People in Huayramarca might be passional about football pretty much everywhere, but more hostile when you go down the mountains, driving to the coast. Down there, if people don’t attack you, weather might do due to the offensive humidity, mosquitoes and heat that may occur there. In Lima, despite being in the coast, the weather is mild and great to play football, but there might be some sandstorms due to the deserts located south of said city. Coastal teams usually play at afternoon, when humidity may suffocate those not used to deal with it.

Same happens at the jungle, but the mosquito issue multiplies thousand-fold, also as humidity caused by constant rains that pass there in their transit to the highlands. Water absorption made by trees cause severe issues with an extremely humid weather, hence jungle teams decide to play often at noon, to torture rival teams.

On the Sierra things get worse since the main problem up there is respiration. For a physical activity like football, people might need some weeks to acclimatize altitude and get an efficient breathing pattern that might supply their physical effort needs. Several cities are above the 2500 masl, even the capital city, which is located at 4000 masl, it doesn’t matter at which time they decide to play, if a team isn’t acclimatized, they will even faint during the game if they don’t have with them oxygen tanks to breathe before the game or if they don’t get some treatment into a hyperbaric chamber.

Stadia are distributed to have a distribution as equal as possible for regions, considering that there will be ten local games at Huayramarca, Sierra, Costa and Selva will receive three matches each one and one in the Isles. Each region will receive a high tier rival and then a randomized sort of two other teams in other matchdays. You might contact the Huayramarcan Football Federation (OOC: TG me or shout me at Discord!) in case of more information or solving some needs for your team and fans.

Sierra:

Estadio Nacional de Huayramarca - Capacity: 45,500 - Huayramarca Metropolitan District.

Tenants: Ministry of Culture and Sports of Huayramarca.
Built in: 1968.
Altitude: 4,012 meters above sea level.
Local teams: Illimani FC, Real Ebriedad, Huayramarcan National Team.
Data: Built in 1968, the Estadio Nacional is the jewel in the not so well-shaped crown of the Huayramarcan sport venues, an Olympic stadium that might be a nightmare for visiting teams due to the altitude and weather of the city, which tends to be somewhat hostile every day, even more if it's played at noon due to the sun's radiation at that altitude. Despite being an Olympic stadium, people tend to set significant pressure in it, especially from the neighbouring apartment blocks which tends to be crowded for the matches being held there (they might aim lasers from there, take care!).

Also, the walls near the dressing room have curious messages as such: "Welcome to Huayramarca D.M. At 4,000 meters above sea level "is one of the first things the visiting teams will read upon entering the dressing room, perhaps to make clear the conditions to which they will be subjected throughout the game. It is still intimidating the following warning that is issued when they leave the visiting dressing room "Caution, if you have the following symptoms: Headache, vertigo, fatigue, tachycardia, nausea or vomiting, wheezing, dyspnoea or inappetence, go to the medical staff, we are at your disposal."

Will host:
  • MD :14 vs Cabo Azure - 20:05 - Windy, -5°C.

Estadio de la Revolución - Capacity: 40,000 - San Ignacio de la Frontera, Cajamarca.

Image

Tenants: Ministry of Culture and Sports of Huayramarca.
Built in: 1985.
Altitude: 2,325 meters above sea level.
Local teams: Audax Cajamarca, Huayramarcan National Team.
Data: The Ministry of Culture and Sports has decided to revamp the sporting infrastructure across Huayramarca to promote football among young people and form, in a near future, a strong Huayramarcan National Team. To fulfil said promise stadia were built in significant places in Huayramarca, San Ignacio de la Frontera is one of those sometimes-forgotten outposts of the nation yet relevant for trading with its neighbouring Mertagne in the eastern side of the Highlands. Home of Audax Cajamarca, this stadium promises to offer one of the most interesting fan scenes in the nation, as people are more enthusiastic than other places in Huayramarca, considering the heavy influence that Mertagnian football has caused in this place.

Not as high as another venues in terms of altitude, the 2,325 meters above sea level isn't a cipher that should be underestimated, to the contrary, it's still a problematic altitude for teams that aren't used to it, especially on ball shooting and breathing conditions. This stadium is the only one in Huayramarca that uses turf as ground to play, something that could cause issues with visiting teams and Huayramarcans that might not be used to play here.

Will host:
  • MD 5: vs Kewlz - 19:00, 1°C. Sleet.

Selva:

Estadio Olímpico del Oriente - Capacity: 26,000 - Sechura.

Image

Tenants: MuniSechura.
Built in: 1945.
Altitude: 560 meters above sea level.
Local teams: Sociedad Petrolera, Huayramarcan National Team.
Data: One of the biggest stadia in Huayramarca, the main hub of sports in the Jungle region is located at Sechura, a city of about 300,000 inhabitants which serves as logistical hub for operations of rubber production and for explorations into the dense jungle nearby. Sociedad Petrolera is a modest Liga 1 side, but one that tends to attract ticket sell outs every game, since people in that region tends to be quite enthusiastic of football in order to forget they’re not so good daily life. At that city, one should take care of humidity, which tends to be quite strong at times, hence teams usually play there on afternoon or night, since heat might be something difficult to stand even for locals.

Will host:
  • MD 3: vs Delaclava - 15:00 – Rainy, 33°C.

Estadio Municipal de Pando - Capacity: 18,000 - Pando.

Image

Tenants: Autoridad Deportiva de Pando.
Built in: 1986.
Altitude: 150 meters above sea level.
Local teams: Asociación Deportiva Vaca Díez, Club ABH, Huayramarcan National Team.
Data: Pando is located just in the outskirts of the burgeoning city of Brigadier Echeandía, part of the well-known “Cocoa Axis” serving as a gateway to some of the best plantations of cocoa in Anaia. As part of the massive development that the Huayramarcan Selva is having due to oil and cocoa, the Autoridad Deportiva de Pando decided to invest in building a significant stadium for two of the strongest and most popular clubs of the Department such as Vaca Díez and ABH, hence it was built with savings coming from taxation of those two lucrative activities.

The environment could be relaxed compared to other venues in Huayramarca, fans there tend to be supportive but more as a hobby rather than a passion… But there’s no certainty on how this could change with the Huayramarcan National Team visiting their lands.

Will host:
  • MD 1: vs The Kytler Peninsulae - 18:00 - Clear skies, 27°C.

Costa:

Estadio Metropolitano del Guayas - Capacity: 62,000 - Guayaquil.

Image

Tenants: Autoridad Guayaquileña de Deportes.
Built in: 1980.
Altitude: 15 meters above sea level.
Local teams: Guayaquil Wanderers, Barcelona Sporting Club, Huayramarcan National Team.
Data: A kettle pot, that's the definition for the biggest stadium in all of Huayramarca. "El Metropolitano" is the most recently built stadium in the nation and will make the debut for international football in Huayramarca. Hosts two teams and the fan atmosphere in Guayaquil is one of the most intimidatory ones in the multiverse, fans throwing you stones while receiving, throwing flares, extremely noisy people all around and the incredibly hot and humid weather that dominates the city may be lethal for some teams when trying to visit. Rescuing a tie from here may be considered something great, since you survived the "Guayaco" hell. Hence that, teams often love to play at the afternoon, specially at 3:00 P.M. to squeeze out the rivals in exhaust.

Will host:
  • MD 6: vs Poafmersia - 14:30 – Sunny, 35°C.

Estadio Olímpico Universitario - Capacity: 55,000 Lima.

Image

Tenants: Universidad Nacional Mayor de Santa Cecilia.
Built in: 1955.
Altitude: 430 meters above sea level.
Local teams: Club Universitario.
Data: Imagine a venue packed of people that has just finished their daily classes, people thirsty to watch football and leave aside, for a moment, their daily academic stress. That’s the most accurate depiction of the Estadio Olímpico Universitario, a 55,000-seater venue that will host, for the first time, the Huayramarcan National Team. This is the second largest stadium of Huayramarca, and it’s known for being built in a way that optimizes acoustics, so fans could be noisier than they really are during their fireworks receiving of the local team. To include more communities into the sport, the HFF has considered to include this venue (and the city of Lima) for this WCQ to see more local identity during the matches.

Will host:
  • MD 11: vs Astograth - 18:00 – Sunny, 23°C.

Isles:

Estadio Marítimo - Capacity: 22,000 – Puerto San Carlos.

Image

Tenants: Provincial Authority of the San Carlos Archipelago.
Built in: 1985.
Altitude: 225 meters above sea level.
Local teams: Club Marítimo, Huayramarcan National Team.
Data: Located three and a half hours away from Continental Huayramarca (via airplane), Puerto San Carlos is the furthest outpost of Huayramarca, located midway between Ko-oren and Nova Calania (continent). A city known for its ecologic mindset, good coral reefs to do snorkelling and pristine beaches that turns it into the ideal vacation spot for the average Huayramarcan family. The Estadio Marítimo has been built by the National Government and the Huayramarcan FA in their “Together Forever” campaign of integrating the four main regions of the nation into the sports scene, this stadium boasts the privilege of being the first carbon-neutral venue in the Anaian region by virtue of respecting the environment and being powered by natural means of energy such as wind and sun.

Fans here might be the noisiest in Huayramarca, this because the enthusiasm it means to receive the National Team in rare occasions for them, aside from being this World Cup Qualifier the formal inaugural act of the venue. Expect a wild crowd of people, even in the nearby hills or climbing trees to see the match.

Will host:
  • MD 9: vs Vielfaltig - 19:00 – Misty, 20°C.

Population: 36 million, demonym: Huayramarcan, capital city: Chuquiago, languages: Spanish, Quechua, Aymara + 6

The Chronicles of Obama: A Ballad of Bushes and Bidens

"Joe! Joe! Wake up, sleepyhead!"

"Huh? What is it? I just got out of my desk to grab a soda."

"You blithering idiot! Great, well that's just great. I'm dead. Go and pick up my reboot card before we lose this match altogether."

"Okay, okay wait - oh, nevermind. I got sniped. Gosh darn it!"

Joe sighed and slinked back into his plush gaming chair. He took off his headphones to avoid the torrent of verbal abuse from his teammate Giorgio and examined his surroundings. Wendeez burger wrappers in a pile on the floor. Empty Sozha Soda cans in another. Joe sighed again. What had his life come to? Just last year he was having the time of his life at the Hawaii School of Economics and making connections with diplomats in the Obama administration. Now, he's sitting in his dump of a flat in New Barack City playing Fortnite all day and night with another college dropout.

"Giorgio, I think we should reconsider our goals. We can't be playing Fortnite every day for the rest of our lives."

"Yeah, I was thinking the same. You're absolute garbage! A monkey would have better aim than you. We should play something that's more suitable for you. How about some Minecraft?"

"No, no. I meant any games. Gaming isn't a good life path for either of us. We need to find real jobs and some real success."

"Pfft, tell that to, I dunno, OUR PRESIDENT. If the leader of our glorious nation made it to the top with his epic gaming, why can't us? Besides your chronic skill issue of course."

"That's... that's different. Please. Isn't your dad a senior diplomat at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs? Perhaps he could score us some internships and we could find something better to do on weekday afternoons."

"Why? I'm having the time of my life doing this. I've found my calling, and that's killing imaginary people in video games. You clearly didn't like all that diplomacy business enough to stay in HSE, so if you don't feel like gaming anymore find something you'd rather do. Maybe become a shoe shiner or a factory worker or something. I'm perfectly comfortable where I am, don't drag me into your shit."

The call comes to a natural end and Joe gets up from his chair. Okay, he thinks to himself. Baby steps to a new me. Let's start by picking up all this rubbish. As he bends over to pick up a Wendeez wrapper however, he suddenly hears a crack.

"Yeah, you're suffering from a rare case of Step on a Crack Syndrome."

Joe stares at his doctor with disbelief. "What the heck is that?"

"Well, you see normally if you step on a crack your mother's own back is broken. But you're clearly not anyone's mother. This is highly unusual of course."

"That's not the... okay, never mind. How serious is it, doc?"

"Well, there only appears to be minor damage so far, so you can still perform normal human functions like walking and standing. But your condition could take a turn for the worst within the next two weeks. It's important that you get immediate back surgery."

"Well, let's do that then! What do I need to do to get this surgery?"

"One small hiccup Mr Biden. Uh... you'll need to raise 2 million dollars for the surgery. As I said, a really unusual variant of a common disease, so we're gonna need lots of funds."

"TWO MILLION? I'm still paying off my student debts! Don't we have Obamacare?"

"You see, this experimental procedure isn't covered by Obamacare. Coupled with also... some unusual circumstances relating to your character, it's highly unlikely that the Obamacare Board would approve any funding for your surgery."

-

"Hey man, those zombies are coming right for us! Joe, you have the iron sword, quickly slay them! JOE! What the hell are you doing Joe?"

"Sorry Giorgio. I've had a really rough day. I'm gonna log off."

"Ugh, thank god! I'm gonna go find someone who actually knows how to play. Like Dick. See ya."

Joe turns off his monitor and stares at the black screen. He stares deep into his reflection. He'd never felt scared of death, but looking at it straight in the eyes and knowing that it's only a few weeks away from catching up to him, gave him some chills. Joe pulled out the wrapper that started this whole new existential crisis. "Wendeez. It didn't even taste good anyway." he scoffed. But then he saw something. A glimmer of hope. Joe turned to the underside of the wrapper.

"WENDEEZ FORTNITE DUOS COMPETITION - WIN THREE MILLION DOLLARS! APPLY NOW!"
Sonnel is the place.

Early Doubts
Manager Christian Vermont answers some questions from the press about the national team.

The team you've decided to build is rather odd. First of all for clarifying, why in the world is a foxian on the team (Ines Forrestal)?
"All I would like to say is that I judge this team based upon their talents and capability. Centuries ago, the Bhaga Empire when it ruled the land had diverse cultures, groups, and races united by one. The insurgency that was sparked all the way back in 444 being led by mostly people of other races to humans is a pure coincidence and the prejudice to these "other races" must stop. I, as someone who is multiple centuries old learned that this long lasting distaste must stop and I will not be tolerating any negative criticism upon this team's players if that criticism is based upon that player's race, religion, or physical features. Ines Forrestal despite being a foxian is a proper Aphrilian citizen and due to her capability and talent deserves to represent the Anchors for this World Cup Qualifying cycle and I do not want to hear anyone say otherwise due to any reason at all."

Ashton Roberts hasn't played a game in quite a while due to their injury. Why were they selected while knowing this?
"It was either Roberts or that prick (Keegan) Swanson. Those two were the only left backs asides from McPraxley that would fit in the system that I have designated for the team along with Ingrid. Plus, I am certain everyone in this room knows that Roberts despite being unable to play, not being the wisest or best player is still someone to look after. They have the uncanny ability to pull the strings needed to keep a team together. And considering that I have been given information upon the woes of a certain goalkeeper during the Di Bradini Cup (Karnwell), someone like Roberts will help him and Rosberg keep the team in a cohesive, harmonious environment despite the possible issues. I am more than certain and I am putting my trust in these three players and their ability to keep this talented team together for the entire cycle."

Speaking of the Di Bradini Cup, what is your thoughts on the Junior Anchors final result and why did you select 4 young players from that team for this team?
"I think reaching the knockout rounds is good enough. Sure, the Junior Anchors should aim to do better next cycle but I am more than content for their first time attempt considering they are, as of first sanctioned matchday older than the senior Anchors. But I do not mind that. And as for the reason for me to select 4 players from the Junior Anchors and promoting them to the senior national team? As I said I know about one of these youngsters woes in Karnwell. He along with Lacey, O'Truffet, and Christonson have reportedly started "bonding" with each other despite Lacey and Christonson still having unresolved tension between them. With two of them being labelled as Aphrilia's best young players before the DBC along with a now captain in training and a good center back, there is opportunity for them to mold a next generation national team once they grow older and wiser. And plus, this still follows the rules that I have laid out to be selected for the national team when the NAFA first chose to sign up to the WCQ."

What did you say the rules were if one wants to be selected for the national team?
"Other than the standard of being an Aphrilian citizen, being a footballer, having a good enough record to be on the selection list, and having a decent enough attitude that you don't cause ridiculous problems among other things, I have two key rules. The first one being that one should be between 22 and 50 years of age. Of course, players I select directly will always be under exemption from these specific rules I make. And the age limit is largely due to the fact that we should not stick to the exact same faces for multiple cycles on end. I am not only planning the present but also for the future while considering the past. I know what I am doing. The other rule is that I want clarity. No lying about yourself, no hiding about who or what you are, for if you want to hide things from your teammates then you can. But, I as a manager must know. Do note this is only if you consent to telling me your secrets, if you are selected and would rather hide the truth from me then I am completely fine... I just hope you reveal the secret before it ends up biting you back and screwing you over. Clarity and honesty is something I see as important as it has destroyed the lives of my friends. And I don't want a lack of either to destroy the futures of these, compared to me, very young players. I'll do everything I can to keep to these words."

Why is Pallas Millennium Stadium the chosen home ground for qualifying?
"If you know the scripts to Ichiozore, then you know why Pallas Millennium Stadium was chosen. While we pray to the Eidolon of Time, Ezo, the scriptures mention several of Ezo's servants. Pallas being one of them, the Overseer of Time Passage. Other servants include Corvorant the Overseer of Time Shifting, Sova the Overseer of Time Fluidity, and Hyphen the Overseer of Time Change. This is our first ever cycle in the qualifying for this World Cup and although it's almost impossible we will get any close to qualifying, this is a moment of passage for us. This will purely become a memory once this is all over, and we will follow through the next cycle we participate in. We want Pallas to look down upon us as we pass through this new "passage" from a time where we did not know anything about a multiversal football World Cup to participating in the qualifiers of the tournament. It's a tradition that the NAFA will continue to upkeep no matter what. And if anyone has qualms with it, then bring it to NAFA and not me."

Due to signing up late, Aphrilia missed the warm-up tournament for newcomers that is the Baptism of Fire. How will this affect the team and what's the goal for this cycle?
"Understandably, the lack of practice in actual matches will heavily affect this team and considering the group we are drawn in, we will surely have a hard time. As I said from the previous question, it's almost if not impossible for us to qualify and us not participating in the Baptism of Fire will give us a much harder time. But one thing to take advantage of is because of us not participating, we are considered an unranked nation. Nothing that can 100% help determine how good or bad we are, and the team will be doing our best to use it as a surprise factor. We could either pull a miracle or fall into the grounds with our head and a stick up our arse, who knows. And if I a being realistic, our goal is to probably earn at the very least 5 points in this cycle. If I'm being pessimistic, we'd be lucky if we even score a point at all. That's how random this supposed World Cup can be from the my and the management's research into the history of this tournament. So only time can tell and may we pray to Ezo for good fortune in this tournament."
"...I'll never trust the same, I'll see friendship as just another game...! Full of winners and losers, selfish abusers... You failed to fly but somehow I’m to blame...!?"

Ladies and gentlemen, you're watching the post-draw show on TJJ in Saint-Jean-Jacques-sur-Mer and on BBS in Burnham-on-Stove. My name is Pierre-Marc Jolicoeur and we have two guests, one from Saint-Jean-Jacques, and one from Burnham-on-Stove, who will talk about the draw with a focus on group 10. Please welcome Jean-François Fafard, 38 years old, a proud fan sporting the Jean-Jacquois flag on his back like a cape, and Tyla MacGregor, a 16 years old transgender woman from Burnham-on-Stove with short purple hair.

Tyla MacGregor: Was it necessary to tell everyone that I'm transgender? This is a micro agression!

Pierre-Marc (Host): Oh my god, I'm so sorry miss MacGregor, I didn't want to offfend you... Let's stay focus on group 10. Yes, Saint-Jean-Jacques et Burnham-on-Stove is in group 10 and other nations in the group are Pemecutan, Elmyia, Adab, Patriotlandia, The Licentian Isles, Frontiere and Hafamarimyht. So, let's start with Mr Fafard, do you have a few words on Pemecutan:

Jean-François Fafard: Unknown nation but they're ranked 10th so they must be good...

Tyla: Of course, everything that is outside Saint-Jean-Jacques is unknown to you, stupid nationalists! Pemecutan is a great cultured nation with a great football program.

Jean-François: Ok ok well I did my own research and guess what? They have 50 players in their player pool. Yes 50, that's a lot!

Pierre-Marc (Host): Let's move on with Elmyia. Miss MacGregor, your turn to speak...

Tyla: Elmyia is a nation from Rushmore. They're ranked 38th and have a good shot at the World Cup proper.

Jean-François: I did some research once again and their squad is normal sized but what catches my attention is that 20 years old Antonio SIlva has been named to the starting XI instead of veteran Maria Grosso.

Pierre-Marc (Host): Let's move on with Adab. Mr Fafard, a few words...but keep it clean...

Jean-François: There's no way I can talk about this nation and keeping it clean. they're a bunch of...

Tyla: Let me talk about them please. Adab is a great islamic nation and islam is a religion of peace...

Jean-François steps up of his chair and shout: No no no, they will invade us and force us to convert to islam and ... and...

Pierre-Marc (Host): Dude, please calm down. Let's move on with Patriotlandia. Miss MacGregor, a few words

Tyla: Well, judging by their name, this nation is racist but probably not as much as Mr Fafard here.

Jean-François, still not calmed: I'm not racist and Patriotlandia is a great nation, I'm cheering for them whenever they don't play against us!

Pierre-Marc (Host): Can you both please keep on football and stop insulting other nations? I'm continuing this show by myself, you can both leave the studio. Thank you.

(pause)

Pierre-Marc (Host): Let's move on with The Licentian Isles. This Esportivan nation is ranked 177th and it will be difficult for them but not impossible to qualify.
Then, we have Frontiere, ranked 253rd. A BOF participant, they lost against Myrtle Beach in round of 16. And lastly, we have an unranked nation, Hafamarimyht. This is what completes group 10.

(pauce again)

Pierre-Marc (Host): Let's make predictions for every groups. Mr Fafard and Miss MacGregor were suppose to make predictions too, but they're too childish for the show.

Group 1: Let's not pick against Anaia, so I believe Ko-oren will win the group and Mertagne will go through the playoffs.

Group 2: Baker Park for the win and Eshialand for the playoffs.

Group 3: Naixi for the 1st place and Tikariot to the playoffs.

Group 4: Zwangzug 1st and TJUN-ia will go through the playoffs.

Group 5: Flavovespia for the win and Valentine Z to the playoffs.

Group 6: Farfadillis 1st and the return of Darmen.

Group 7: Huayramarca wins and Cabo Azure to the playoffs.

Group 8: Nephara and Brenecia will dominate.

Group 9: Graintfjall wins and Ochre Islands to the playoffs.

Group 10: Saint-Jean-Jacques et Burnham-on-Stove wins with Pemecutan being 2nd.

Group 11: Asian domination with Yuezhou and Sendhang.

Group 12: SRS First with Pasarga 2nd.

Group 13: Banija and The Holy Empire.

Group 14: Women domination with Saint Eleanor 1st and Cassadaigua to the playoffs.

Group 15: Audioslavia 1st with Qasden in the playoffs.

Group 16: HUElavia 1st and Québec 2nd.

Group 17: Delte for the win and Juvencus in the playoffs.

Group 18: Gnejs wins and Tumbra for the playoffs.

Group 19: Valanora 1st and the naked princesses of Jeruselem to the playoffs.

Group 20: Kelssek for the win with Eura 2nd.

Who? What?

Image

"Hi, hello everyone! I'm Jang Sori and I'll be your host for today. Now, since this is the first episode, I'll be telling you what the show is all about. Every once in a while, I'll be explaining topics touched on in the main show. That's right, people, places, things, anything, really. So, without further ado, let's get to it!"

What is Qì?

Image

"Qì is the life energy in every living being. You, me, your cat, the birds outside, all of us. Now, you might be wondering why not every one of us is going around throwing fireballs or turning into rhinos. Well, that's because most of us haven't cultivated ours enough to do that. The heroes and villains you see in the news are just around 2% of the Amenrian population who have, and we call them Awakened. Awakened became that way through training their souls and bodies to the point of giving their Qì colours."

What are Qì colours?

Image

"Okay, remember when I said most Amenrians are not Awakened? That means most of us have colourless Qì, while Awakened have one or more of the six colours of Qì."

"Let's start with red. Red is the colour of passion. Powers using red Qì are explosive, while people having them are unpredictable. They like to live life to the fullest and be honest to the world and themselves. They're not afraid to say what they think, and maybe that's why they tend to be straightforward in a fight. Off the top of my head, Maung is a red hero I can think of."

"Next up is white. White is the colour of order. They're disciplined and organized, and they know how to bring people together. They're protective, they're the kind of people you'd want to protect you. Their powers often involve metal, their signature element, or making themselves and others tougher with forcefields or spiritual armour, which goes back to what I just said about them wanting to protect others. Lord Camellia is the first white hero that comes to mind."

"Green is the colour of strength. A lot of green heroes are these big, tough, reliable guys who are down to earth and one with nature. Yeah, that's a big theme with green heroes. Nature. You see a lot of them controlling plants and animals or doing stuff to their own bodies. Take Boneyard for example. He essentially creates an exoskeleton made of hardened bone!"

"...And with that, today's episode is done. We'll talk about the other colours in the next so stay tuned! Bye!"

The original audio is in Chinese but assume your people get subs in YN's language(s).

The Grand Journey!

HUElavia is drawn in a favorable group with solid opponents and familiar faces with venues set.

HUElavia enters their 20th Qualification campaign for the World Cup, bringing excitement and optimism to the United States of HUElavia. Coming off a historic return to the World Cup in the previous cycle, Los Amarillos/Os Amarelos will be looking to continue the momentum in returning to the World Cup. Despite an underwhelming performance at IAC 19, there is still optimism that the team can do well, especially after bringing up many young players as part of the 54-team roster for the qualifiers.

With the draw being held in Chromatika and with assistance from Sylestone, HUElavia (37) was drawn into Group 16 with the likes of: Aquatian (280), Sannyamathland (129), Krytenia (50), Amenria (UR), Independent Athletes from Quebec (18), West Barack and East Obama (69), and United States of Devonta (184). Looking at the draw, the very first note is the pairing of HUElavia taking on Independent Athletes from Quebec, with players coming from Quebec and Shingoryeo. This is one of the most desired matchups for many years now for HUElavian supporters. The teams have met in other sports, but this is the first time that they will meet in a World Cup Qualifier. On top of that, the current manager Lester O'Reagan is from Q&S, making a major return for the former player and manager. Adding on, this would mark the return of Leonardo Conavacio, another Q&S native who led HUElavia to their first ever IAC title back in IAC 15 after over 10 years leading the team, which led to him and his family being granted honorary citizenship to HUElavia, along with many benefits.

Other matches of note includes Krytenia, the rival most likely to fight with HUElavia for the playoff spot at the very least. Another one is West Barack and East Obama, who have played against Los Amarillos/Os Amarelos before. The other matches are fairly "easy" on paper but one cannot take them lightly due to the small amount of matches and teams compared to the last few editions.

Due to the high profile of the IAQ match, HUElavia is adding another venue to Curumba to accommodate the matchup. Thus, HUElavia's venues will be as follows: Estadio Nacional (100,000) in Curumba, Estadio Capital (90,000) in Curumba, Estadio Internacional (82,500) in San Rafael, Estadio Acuático (67,000) in Bello Mar, Estadio Hueti (63,000) in Jinaqa, Takoroyama Kyougijou (62,000) in Takoroyama and Estadio da Selva (58,000) in Natel.

With the venues and schedules released, HUElavia's schedule will be as follows:

Matchday 1:
HUElavia v United States of Devonta
Estadio Hueti, Jinaqa

Matchday 2:
HUElavia vs Aquatian
Estadio da Selva, Natel

Matchday 3:
Sannyamathland vs HUElavia

Matchday 4:
HUElavia vs Krytenia
Estadio Capital, Curumba

Matchday 5:
Amenria vs HUElavia

Matchday 6:
HUElavia v Independent Athletes from Quebec
Estadio Nacional, Curumba

Matchday 7:
West Barack and East Obama vs HUElavia

Matchday 8:
United States of Devonta vs HUElavia

Matchday 9:
Aquatian vs HUElavia

Matchday 10:
HUElavia vs Sannyamathland
Estadio Acuático, Bello Mar

Matchday 11:
Krytenia vs HUElavia

Matchday 12:
HUElavia vs Amenria
Takoroyama Kyougijou, Takoroyama

Matchday 13:
Independent Athletes from Quebec vs HUElavia

Matchday 14:
HUElavia vs West Barack and East Obama
Estadio Internacional, San Rafael

With the venues announced, the matches against IAQ and Krytenia have nearly sold out in tickets, with 15% held aside for visiting supporters of both countries. The others are on sale so far, and it looks as if HUElavia will have sold out capacity for all 7 matches. One can only hope that in this shortened qualifying cycle, HUElavia can return to the World Cup and continue being a strong force in Multiversal Football.

New Region, Same Old Huuhkajat?

Postby Kimi-Suomi » Mon Nov 13, 2023 10:59 am

Asiat muuttuvat. Things change. The last time the Huuhkajat of Kimi-Suomi suited up for football, it was in an AOCAF Round of 16 contest against Banija...a game we ended up losing 5-1. Now, only a few months later, the Huuhkajat make their return...with the Star of Anaia on their right shoulder. The collapse of AO into Arrosia and the switch that we made to the land of the Foxchester Declaration is still a hot topic even after all this time, with the full repercussions of the love yet to be fully realised...but considering we debuted at a WC, switching regions before a WC shouldn't be too bad...right? This WCQ qualifying process will be...short as there are only 14 games to go through, with group winners in automatically and only the runners-up going to the playoffs for those final spots...so who will be in our way for those spots?

Pot 1 - Kelssek (8) - MD1 home, MD8 away
Manager: ???
KIM Venue: The Nest [Pesä], Kimi Kaupunki
Co-hosts of the last WC, this is a big Pot 1 team to get out of that gaggle of death. Probably one of the best things The East Pacific has ever produced. Is that controversial to say?

Pot 2 - Eura (27) - MD5 away, MD12 home
Manager: Glen Merson(?)
KIM Venue: Galaktien Colosseum (Colosseum of the Galaxies), Lumikukkulat
Eura. Four letters that can spell death in this sport as one of the current Big 2 in Rushmore (w/Nephara. Sorry, Cassie!). Lost the CR final to Cabo Azure but other than that, they are still Eura...a threat.

Pot 3 - Koronavinen [Koronavia] (48) - MD6 home, MD13 away
Manager: Tilman Holtz
KIM Venue: Galaktien Colosseum (Colosseum of the Galaxies), Lumikukkulat
One of our new regional neighbours, they made the Qualifying Playoffs of the last WC but fell in the Quarters of the CAFA (which we will encounter for the 1st time next year). Don't know what to expect, but Pot 3 = threat in our eyes.

Pot 4 - Kimi-Suomi (71) - No Byes This Time
Manager: Esko Laaksonen
KIM Venue: N/A
That's us! Things weren't really fun last time out but now that were in a new region, we hope for a better and brighter future for Suomen sports in general. Esko Laaksonen's team is unchanged from that final AOCAF, which meansthis will be the last WC campaign for most of our starters. Whether or not that will spur us on remains to be seen.

Pot 5 - Pimeämaninen [Darkmania] (116) - MD2 home, MD9 away

Darkmania - Novapax's finest and a nation we certainly have encountered before in numerous sports, especially Ice Hockey. As a nation that diesn't really take part in regionals, we don't really know what to expect...which could mean we should be fine or that we need to be ready for anything.

Pot 6 - Euran Oseanian Alueet [Euran Oceania Territories] (154) - MD4 home, MD11 away
Manager: ???
KIM Venue: The Nest [Pesä], Kimi Kaupunki
The EOT - Eura's formerly AO, now Anainan outpost. The Oslograd era of this team was it's best before he took the big job itself and ever since, has the EOT really done anything? You never know though...

Pot 7 - Senterus (250) - MD3 away, MD10 home
Manager: Andre Martini
KIM Venue: The Nest [Pesä], Kimi Kaupunki
Hailing from the Commonwealth of Liberty, Senterus is this group's BoF team - existing in the Round of 16 to the funnily named "Why are you in here". Agressive by name, they should be a good test of both our resolve and our shinpads.

Pot 8 - Okoya (UR) - MD7 away, MD14 home
Manager: Willem "Yasu" Alfons
KIM Venue: The Nest [Pesä], Kimi Kaupunki
Finally we have a UR named Okoya...also from Anaia. They've certainly come prepared for their debut senior tournament with a teamsheet and kit selection all prepared...and that scares us a bit. Because while they are a UR, they seem ready for a fight...and we will have to be ready for anything.

Hotel Balcony
Konstanzengen, Basel-Triesen

Before the first match of the World Cup qualifying stage

Elias Stöger and his best friend and national team teammate, Samuel Kitzinger, were sitting on a hotel balcony which overlooked Kurt Vogel Arena. They were resting after a day of practice as they and their team had been preparing for the next set of matches following their Baptism of Fire victory. Elias was a bit annoyed that they couldn't just play all of their home games at Pforzbronn Park - his domestic team's home arena. He was relieved to see that the arena had a running track around it, like his home arena. This was standard in Basel-Triesen, as athletics was a popular sport and hobby of the Bastriesian people. Arenas whose construction was funded by the government, such as Kurt Vogel Arena or Pforzbronn Park, were build with a running track so that they could be opened to the public for usage when the football team wasn't practicing or playing. The public wasn't allowed on the pitch, of course, just the running track.

Elias sighed and looked over at Samuel. He'd known this man for most of his life - since they were neighbors in primary school and played football together in their backyards. They played football on the same secondary school team and then the same university club team. They'd only been separated when brought onto different domestic pro teams. But, luckily, they'd been brought back together by being tapped for the national team for the 82nd Baptism of Fire and now the 95th World Cup.

Elias, despite knowing his best friend for so long, had been struggling recently, a few years now, to gather the courage to come out as gay to him. He spoke up now, momentarily gathering the courage, "Hey, Sammi, I have something important to tell you."

His friend looked over at him and tilted his head in a questioning way, a confused look on his face at the sudden change in the conversation they'd been having before. "Yeah, what is it?"

Elias looked at his feet and then looked back out over the stadium in front of them, across the street from their hotel. He stood up and looked at the sky, where the clouds were beginning to reflect the oranges, pinks, and purples of the sunset. He didn't hear Samuel ask him if he was okay, overwhelmed with sudden anxiety as his sense of courage rushed away as rapidly as it had come.

Samuel stood up and put his hand on Elias' shoulder, "Hey, Eli, are you okay?"

Hearing Samuel's voice closer to his ear, Elias perked up and looked over at his friend before slowly sitting back down. He nodded, "Y-yeah, I'm fine."

Samuel continued to look at him, "Are you sure, Eli? What was the important thing you were going to tell me?" He also returned to his seat.

Elias shook his head and lied, "Nothing, actually, it was just an idea that we better be more serious and prepared for this competition than we were for the Baptism of Fire."

Samuel looked at him confused, and it seemed for a moment as if he didn't believe Elias and was going to press the issue further, but he instead turned to look at the sunset. The two of them watched as the sun slowly drifted below the horizon of the hills in the distance, casting them into the darkness of the young night. They eventually returned to their conversation before the awkward moment they'd shared together and they talked excitedly about the Baptism of Fire and the upcoming World Cup qualifying matches until late into the night.

Anggara Wage Wuku Ugu, Pawukon 1785

The Canggu Gathering

Canggu - Today, the resort town of Canggu become the center of the attention as several foreign leaders are coming the town. Their presence is believed to be based on the invitation made by Patih Madya Ngurah Agung Kusumajaya. Leaders from Soracana Islands, Rarungan, Gili Anakan and also from Kanginan and Petang Islands are present together with their delegations. The gathering is rumor to be the result of the previous visitation made by Patih Madya in light of the sudden failed referendum over Kanginan and Petang Islands independence. But what's behind this gathering, no one is making any statement which build up the curiosity of what' really happening. "It is still too premature to be address. We will inform the public when everything is clear. But no need to worry," said the spokesperson to the Patih Madya.

Despite the huge attention towards the gathering, one is wondering why Cakranegara and Toluiwa leaders are not seen among the guests. Patih Madya was actively visiting all The Mandaran Council members 6-7 weeks ago. He begins his visit in Soracana Islands and ended in Toluiwa. Political expert, Chandra Mulyawan can only assume what is happening. He believes that Patih Kusumajaya is creating a new alliance from all monarch countries of The Mandaran Council. "With Toluiwa push for an immediate merger, I think Patih Kusumajaya wants to make another approach. And these monarch countries seem to be a good first move as most of them are under Pemecutan influence. And despite the internal fallout between Pemecutan central government and government of Kanginan and Petang Islands, I think in the sense of mutual cooperation, they won't deny it if it is advantages to them," argue Chandra Mulyawan. While Kanginani political expert, Sapta Heradana sees that from this forum, the government of Kanginan try to reach out to these countries to help them gain independence from Pemecutan. "It is like the ultimate goal of the current Kanginan government," said Heradana.

Seeing from the delegation's composition, the gathering would be discussing many aspects. From economy, politics and even security. With the uncertainty, the peoples and media can only be wondered what moves does Patih Kusumajaya take? Chandra Mulyawan stated that Patih Kusumajaya might try other things that can elevate his and his party votes in the upcoming election. He really understands that the domestic situation won't help his party survives. So, he tries to shine internationally. But if the rumor about creating a new alliance that might challenge the existence of The Mandaran Council, which members are also present in this gathering, is true, it might become a double-edge sword for Patih Kusumajaya and his party.

Group 2 Previews

Rea San Vegas
In the first version of this article, we mistakenly published that Rea San Vegas missed out on the Baptism of Fire tournament. This information was found to be incorrect - Rea San Vegas was indeed a participant of that tournament. They failed to make an impression however, finishing bottom of their group with only a single point. Now making their WC Qualifiers debut, they are 287th in the world, the lowest ranked nation in Group 2. We know better than to write them off, but we will have to see if Rea San Vegas chooses to show up on the world stage.

Eshialand
Since their debut in the 88th WC Qualifiers, Eshialand have been a regular fixture. The nation enjoyed their highest ranking of 47th in the world following the 90th cycle, but have held a consistent rank of around 70th since then. Head Coach Kenneth Morgan will be looking to take the Owls back into the top 50, a dream that their fans would dearly enjoy should it come true.

Brusseldorf
Brusseldorf sits fifth in the group in terms of international ranking, but don't let that fool you - Los Alrededores thrive as underdogs, and will be sure to cause an upset or two. The 23 players that Sir Craig Foster has called up to the national team have all demonstrated superb effort throughout their respective club campaigns this year.

Commonwealth of Baker Park
One word = Consistency. Baker Park has not dropped out of the top 25 in the world since the advent of World Cup 82, notably the first tournament that Brusseldorf took part in. Whilst they experienced a slight dip in the rank following WC91, their efforts in the most recent cycle have taken them back up to 14th in the world. Our favourites to top Group 2, and the team to beat.

Hapilopper
A storied footballing nation, but their performances on the world stage seem to have varied greatly. Currently they are ranked 223rd, lower even, than the debutant team of Myrtle Beach. The ferocious Nathan Ellis will do anything to return Hapilopper to the lofty heights of WC91. We think that he can do it, but only time will tell if Hapilopper can find consistency in their performances.

Cardenao
Played their first international games in WC 91 and have found a good run of form.

City of Myrtle Beach
Another WC debut in Group 2, the City-State of Myrtle Beach will be looking to put on a good show. Head Coach James Robinson will hope that his side can continue their Baptism of Fire performances.

Aleirave
Last but not least, Aleirave. Much like Cardenao, they debuted in the 91st World Cup Qualifiers. Following a strong Baptism of Fire campaign, their world rank has followed a similar trajectory to Cardenao’s, and they find themselves ranked 66th in the world, in close proximity to Eshialand.

For many tournaments, the questions for Flavovespia were, could they qualify? Who are the potential banana skins of the group? And who was the Pot 1 side Flavovespia would be challenging, and hoping for an upset? However, as Flavovespia enter for the 13th time, they’ve finally reached the top Pot of the Qualifiers themselves. Qualification on paper is no longer a question of could, but arguably should now. Augusto Rinaldi, the manager who’s masterminded this success, knows this as much as anyone, and will press that on the team.

It was a competitive qualifying group last time out for Flavovespia, but in the end, a 6-1 win over Valentine Z, in Flavovespia’s group again for qualifying, sent Flavovespia to their 4th World Cup, all in succession. In a group of Nephara, Turori and HUElavia, Flavovespia pulled out 2 wins to win the group, a first ever knockout appearance in what was not an easy group to progress from. From there, it was that infamous game against Farfadillis. To Flavovespians, its hard to think of a more disliked figure than Ssendi Lutanywa, the referee now. Having missed an elbow on Michael Cole, that kept him off for 15 minutes, he then sent off Kieron Player for two soft yellows and captain David Lyons for a dubious straight red. With only 9 on the pitch, Flavovespia held it to 4-4 AET, but with key penalty takers off, it ended in a penalty shootout defeat. Plenty will argue on another day Flavovespia could’ve won, the more optimistic or delusional, depending on the readers opinion, will say Flavovespia could’ve gone so much further. But alas, football can very a cruel sport, Flavovespia must start afresh this cycle if they are to better that performance.

This qualifying campaign will be a shorter, and likely more intense affair than previous campaigns. Just 8 teams per group means 14 games, down from the 20+ games often seen now. 20 group winners go through, the 20 runners up face a single legged neutral playoff to earn a World Cup 95 berth. Room for error is reduced, every game can count and a few upsets or surprises could be decisive. Feedback in the press is mixed, whilst some praise the decision, saying it’ll lead to less burnout, and make games matter more, others say it means just a couple of poor results, or a bad start can doom a team. Augusto Rinaldi was more light-hearted about it when asked in the opening press conference, merely saying “the number of games does not matter, if you can get a good result in them anyway”.

For Flavovespia, the start of the Qualifiers will not be the easiest, with away trips to Sudilia and Savojarna. Fellow Anaia nation United Hawkland will be Flavovespia’s first home opponents. On paper, the key threat to Flavovespia is the Pot 2 side, in this case Milchama. The two sides met in World Cup 93 on the opening Matchday, playing out a 1-1 draw. As well as tge aforementioned Valentine Z, the group is rounded out by Tzvi and The Dictatorship of Vanilla. The expectation on the team will be as high as ever for Flavovespia now, given recent performances on the global and regional stage. The squad itself contains many veterans who may well be in their last cycle as important players, such as David Lyons, Kieron Player, Michael Cole and Adrian Jones. Fans will be hoping that the newer generation, that started with the superstar Jonathan Bagshaw, will rise up to the challenge and wear the shirt of Flavovespia with pride, passion and good performances. Every cycle begins on zero points, for Flavovespia, they’ll hope it doesn’t stay zero for long.

Mystery Transmission from Tonissia?
http://www.xtranews.xan

VANOSDALE - Scientist in Vanosdale at the Xannerian National Research Lab for Radio Studies, have picked up mysterious signals from the southwest in the area former to Atlantian Oceania. Many people have been speculating what this could mean, triangulation with the Xannerian National Research Lab for Radio Studies facility in Sheasport have determined a possible location for the origin of the signal. The Signal seems to be coming from a place once lost to time, Tonissia.

Yes, it is believed that for the first time in nearly 85 Years a communication has been recieved from the former colonizer of Xanneria itself, Tonissia. No one knows what the radio signal was specifically, but communication be intercepted from that location of what is now being called Arossia is fascinating and brings up many interesting theories and conspiracies. For a large part of time from the independence of Xanneria in the late 1700s to the 1950s, Xanneria and Tonissia were large scale trading partners. But in the 60s and 70s things soured between the two and through a corrupt series of dictators, Tonissia had fallen into ruin, with many suspecting a violent civil war wiped out a large portion of the population and some even claiming a nuclear apocalypse had befallen the nation.

Now here we stand wondering what the future is, what history had taken place in the last 80ish years. Will Tonissia officially return, or was the radio communication a false blip of hope?

Xanneria draws Yak Empire 2-2
http://www.xtrasports.xan

BUCCANEER BAY - Playing in front of a near capacity crowd of 27,302 at the new Marnewohler Stadium in Buccaneer Bay, the Xannerian Maroons came out a bit flat looking and drew world 97th ranked Yak Empire 2-2. The game was a doozy fromt he start, weather it be the opponent playing above their weight or just the Maroons looking far a head it got off to a 1-0 Yak Empire lead when Tsagaantsoojiin Oryaangabar took a pass from Vitaly Openka and got it by Evan Jefferson Jr. So by halftime it was Yak 1-0 Xanneria. Drawing further ahead against the Maroons, Yak took a 2-0 lead when Oryaangabar got a header by Jefferson Jr at the hour mark. But thanks to Italo D'Arcy, The Maroons saved some pride as late int he game D'arcy took a shot that had the trajectory and got it by keeper Egered Khad who plays in Xanneria for the second tier Powell Rovers. Lastly D'arcy heroics in the 85th minute saw D'arcy again get one by Khad when he took a pass from fellow midfielder Rylee Greerenbach and scored a game drawing goal, salvaging some pride for the Maroons.

In the end D'arcy had this to say about his opponents.

They played their fucking asses off and honestly its a miracle that we got a draw here. They were thirsty and we just were out there taking in life ingoring the game almost, I'm sorry to the fans who saw that first hour of gameplay from us, but man we need to tighten up for Fafadillas comin' up

[Editor's note: Only after deciding on the branding for the entire qualification campaign was it realized that Reçueçn is not actually currently unranked. Apparently, the nation entered qualifying for World Cup 92, unbeknownst to this publication, which provided absolutely zero (0) coverage of the event. However, as mentioned, branding decisions have already been taken and we might as well be unranked anyway.]

Twelve World Cups ago, the little nation of Reçueçn did the impossible. It had been years since they had competed in multiverse soccer--more than ten cycles since participating in the Baptism of Fire, and all with no activity. When Reçueçn signed up for World Cup 83, they were Unranked. They had no KPB whatsoever, and expectations were low. But then a football miracle happened.

Despite the odds, Reçueçn qualified. The plucky underdogs fought their way through a schedule stacked against them to make it to the World Cup without a KPB point to their name. It was a historic achievement. The names of teams that qualified immediately after their Baptism of Fire are still remembered--Spaam, Baker Park, Drawkland--and Reçueçn joined their ranks without even the benefit of a recent baptism: it was entirely cold turkey.

The success lasted for a few glorious cycles, but then it petered out. Reçueçn dipped into the Cup of Harmony, and eventually even that was no more as match coverage dried up. The players and coaches didn't go anywhere, since whenever the nation entered a hiatus they mysteriously stopped aging, but their performance disappeared.

Now, in the present day, as we prepare for World Cup 95, a new dawn is breaking over Reçueçn. The anticipation is growing and the fans are excited. The players are back to relive their glory days. The Spirit of World Cup 83 is flowing across the country, sweeping us onward to victory.

If we could do it in 83, we can do it again. With determination and grit, our équipe nationale can once more achieve the impossible. We recognize that in sports, as in life, we will encounter both victory and defeat. An unseemly desire to win is recognized as unsporting, and a gracious person is prepared to accept their lot whatever it may be. But the Spirit of 83 is about more than winning. It is about choosing your own fate, overcoming the odds, and achieving the impossible. The Spirit of 83 symbolizes to us a can-do attitude, an optimistic outlook, and a determination to never give up.

That is why we dedicate these qualifying games to the Spirit of 83. We find ourselves in the same position we did a dozen cycles ago, and we call to that time when we defied the odds and overcame our obstacles. Our team lacked cohesion; we hadn't played in years; our coach was old; our tactics were outdated. And, of course, we were unranked. Those things are true again today, but with the Spirit of 83 manifest in our hearts, we know that our narrative is written not by the fate Margaret has generated for us, but by the stories we have told.

For years, the only two midfielders to play for the Reçueçn équipe nationale were Harold Saunders and Grégoire Leclair. (Of course, you can argue about how much of the field counts as the "middle", but we really do only mean the middle--we're not talking about the sides here. Of course there have been left and right midfielders, etc.) The two men were foils for each other; Saunders was more aggressive while Leclair was more defensive. Coach Tremblay would start Saunders when he wanted a more attacking strategy, and would start Leclair when he wanted the team to hang back more. Later Coach Relié, who'd trained under Tremblay, would do the same thing. In fact, the pattern was so predictable, that you could tell what strategy les licornes were going for by looking at who was playing at any given moment. If Reçueçn went up two goals and then subbed Leclair for Saunders, you knew they were parking the bus.

Each player had periods where he would start more often. They would go entire tournaments starting every game, and then in the next the roles would be reversed. The fact that the two men were seemingly competing for a single spot on the field every match led to a competitiveness that was not always healthy for them--or beneficial to the team. A defensive midfielder and an attacking midfielder ought to have had room to coexist, but in the Reçuecian playbook, there wasn't room for both at once.

Things continued this way from years. It began all the way back when Reçueçn entered the 59th Baptism of Fire, when Saunders started every game. It continued through an extended hiatus and multiple world cup cycles all the way through qualifying for the 92nd World Cup, when Leclair got the nod and Saunders spent most games on the bench. And everyone expected it to continue through another hiatus to repeat the pattern in qualifying for World Cup 95.

But Bonheur Relié, the manager for the équipe nationale, had other ideas. Saunders and Leclair were both still active in the LNRF, Reçueçn's soccer league, but both were getting older, now in their mid-to-late thirties. Before assembling his qualifying team, Relié personally called them both up individually to thank them for their past service to the team, and to tactfully let them know that he would be going with other options.

And so, even in their retirement from national play, the two midfielders shared a path. They had been teammates in le championnat, when they both used to play for Association Genève, until Leclair had moved abroad to play for Dynamo Sjoedrhavn, and even in the domestic league, they had been forced into a rivalry. Now it was all over, and they had finished neck and neck. It seemed ironic, somehow, although in the end perhaps it was just a coincidence.

Saunders sent Leclair a sardonic text message, and the two met up at a bar in Genève to laugh about it. They found, to their surprise, that now that they were no longer teammates, they could finally be friends. It should have been obvious after all that it had been their egos getting in the way, and now that they could no longer compete, there was nothing to drive them apart.

"Maybe I'll move back here and join you playing for Association Genève, if they'll take me," said Leclair. "It would be kind of sweet to finish out my career at my old club, and alongside a teammate from les licornes at that."

"They'll welcome you back with open arms," said Saunders. "They're still just as offense-minded as ever, but for a name with as many national appearances and with the recognition of yours, even Association Genève would accept a defensive midfielder again."

The pair nursed their beers long into the night and reminisced.

Meanwhile, Coach Relié had chosen some exciting prospects for their replacement. He certainly had not thoughtlessly thrown aside two of his most well-known players: far from it. It was true both Leclair and Saunders had gotten old, and he needed someone younger, but it was not until he had realized what a great option he had waiting for him that Relié had made up his mind to make the change.

Both of the midfielders would have to be replaced, but rather than keep both an attacking and a defensive option, Relié doubled down and called up two defensive midfielders. It was the Reçuecian defensive philosophy, after all. For the second-string option, Relié chose Ansquetil de Bethencourt, a twenty-six year old currently playing for Sportive Annedine. But it was the first-string option that made his heart beat with excitement. Perhaps this was the prospect who would breathe life into the Reçuecian team again at a time when they so desperately needed it, coming out of a multi-cycle hiatus.

Laurent Lapix is a twenty-one year old football prodigy whose future is so bright, he has to wear glasses with extra UV protection. He has never played in Reçueçn; when he was seventeen years old he moved to Tequilo to play for Resplendiente where he played for four seasons (Tequilo's Liga-TQ has only had four Cálculos so far.) The young Lapix' choice of club was appropriate, for his performance truly was resplendent and when Relié realized he had ignored this untapped potential he slapped himself on his forehead, angry at his own stupidity.

For comparison, Franky Adams, les licornes' last great prodigy, also started at seventeen, although he received a call-up for the national team right away. Of course, the eccentricities of timeflow across the multiverse, particularly in a nation as shambolic as Tequilo, mess with things like ages in unpredictable ways, and Franky is still only twenty-five. Multiversal temporal inconsistencies are also most likely responsible for Lapix not receiving a call-up until just now, since his four years in Tequilo most likely happened during a period while time had stopped for many Reçuecians.

Lapix fills the defensive midfielder role brilliantly, with the passionate defense that is now inherently associated with Reçuecian culture, but while maintaining a vision and an awareness that even the most strategic and experienced players would be envious of. On top of that, he has an innate talent, both mental and physical, that shines on the pitch during even the most mundane of plays. And coming from a foreign league, he is full of fresh ideas that spark a bright flame into a Reçuecian side that has seen little change in a long time. His ésprit seems to be at once distinct from and compatible with the rest of the team; Coach Relié has said that he "embodies the Spirit of 83", which has been Relié's latest buzz-phrase for "good vibes in general".

Lapix' arrival brings an exciting newness and spice to the team, including his interpersonal interactions with them, and hopefully heralds happy things for les licornes. We're excited to see what it means for Reçueçn's games during qualifying, but there is only one way to find out.

...Eshialand Forever!!

"A tad to the left... nope, a little more... stop! Dammit you went too far, move it back to the right..."

"What in the world are you doing..." Kenny Morgan asked the head groundskeeper as he walked into the SuperDome for the first time this year.
"Setting the place up for the start of WCQ! We must have this place spic and span for when the Myrtle Beach team gets here! After all, it's their first-ever WCQ match, so we must be extra welcoming!"
"Just make sure not to drop anything on the team... alrighty, come out!"

The team made their way over to the field, getting their game faces on. Sure, today was only their first practice session, but it was important to get hyped up for the games to come.

"Alright team... I've not told anybody this yet -- well, except the stadium employees so they can be prepared for what's to come... and Haulafo... -- but here I have the draw for the next WCQ. Let's see who we're gonna be playing in the next cycle and we can work out our game plans--"
"Wait, I get why you told the stadium staff but why did you tell Haulafo?" Mel Carey asked her coach.
"Well... you'll see why I have. Let's just focus on the matchups."

"First up, we've got the City of Myrtle Beach."
"Starting out with a BoF team?" Jake Harran asked.
"Of course! Always great to welcome newcomers to the competition. Only downside, however, is that it's sort of tough to figure out what to work on, since we really don't have that much information about them..."

"I'd consider it a warmup," Mel replied, "after all, we've probably got a lot bigger fish to fry later on, and as long as we don't do horribly against new teams, we can know what might be lacking for us and use that to improve our game for the future!"

"Heh, you really wanna have an assistant coach spot down the line Mel... I really like that attitude, although it would be wrong to underestimate them. We've dealt with surprises before, so don't expect any freebies. Now... our second match would be Rea San Vegas. Any ideas for them?"

"Another BoF team?" Alice Carroll asked.
"Yeah, we have a decently relaxing start up ahead. Things will turn up to 11 later on, but it'll be alright for now."
"Just don't drop points against them?" Mel asked.

"Precisely. I'll clue you in on something: for the second and third pots, we managed to draw the lowest team in each one. This is the most accessible second place could possibly be for us, and screwing up that opportunity by bombing against newcomers early will be throwing away a massive opportunity. Speaking of, for MD3, we'll be hosting that lowest pot 3..."

"And who were they?" Mel asked.

"Aleirave."

"WHAT?!"

The team wasn't even too sure what to think. An Eshian Derby in the WCQ? And only a year and a half after the one in the Cup of Harmony? How could this keep happening??

"WHAT?!"

Josh Seametzle had only just arrived at ENN headquarters for the day when he got the news about the WCQ fixtures and the Eshian Derby coming to town.

"You're meaning to tell me that Eshialand and Aleirave both start by playing two rank 200+ teams before turning around and playing each other? And only one of the two will be able to get a playoff spot thanks to Baker Park's usual dominance?"

For an Eshian sports fan, this was a dream and a nightmare rolled into one. On the one hand, more games between Eshialand and Aleirave were always a fun time, but on the other hand, this was in WCQ. These two would have to affect each other's chances at qualifying, and no matter how friendly the Kingdom's two teams and their fans may be, this was going to be a long campaign and competition always gets to you in qualifying runs like these. It was a great time to be a reporter, but for the fans? Maybe it would be better if they could be in different groups, if both of them could do well separately... oh well, that die had been cast. This stage had been set.

It was about to get WILD.

"Hello and welcome back to Tournament Report, WCQ preview edition! I'm your host Josh Seametzle, Karsten couldn't be here today, and boy do I have some news for you..."
Anything I say is IC unless proven otherwise by a court of law.

THREE MONTHS AGO

As the stage lights are raised, a glowing green mist covers the entirety of upstage. A wide ebony lectern is all that is visible to the crowd, from which a tremendous yelling and clamoring is issuing. It might be the closing ceremony for the 44th Copa Rushmori, but it feels a fair bit more like a political rally moments before the candidate, or candidates, emerge onto the stage to speak. And, indeed, two politicians are soon to step onto the Chumeichang stage...

As they emerge from the mist, Ru Ping Lai and Jiu Ling Sa raise their arms and wave. The crowd fanatically screams back at them. If there are any visitors to the country in the throng, they must surely be baffled and overwhelmed by this moment of extreme jingoism. While the tournament has been a success (if grueling), this type of elation is hardly fit for a sporting event's closing ceremony.

Lai and Sa step up to the lectern, wide smiles on their faces. The former, the country's Prime Minister, stands at the lectern, stage right. The latter, the Deputy Prime Minister, stands at the lectern, stage left. Lai pulls her microphone to her mouth. The shrieks from the gigantic crowd grow ever louder. The stage vibrates. The green mist behind the two speakers remains unmoved.

LAI: Thank you, Naixi!

The crowd bellows out yet more support. Both Lai and Sa smile.

LAI: Thank you all so much! We are grateful that all of you have come tonight! Copa Rushmori 44 has, I'm sure all of you agree, been a splendid tournament, and I am deeply honored that this incredible nation, this incredible Celestial Empire, has been given the chance to host it!

The audience cannot cry out in joy with any more volume.

LAI: We've seen some wonderful football from some wonderful teams. Congratulations to our winners! Commiserations to our runners-up. And, of course, all praise must go to this tournament's third place finishers most of all!

The noise from the mob in attendance is deafening.

LAI: It has been a delight. But any honest retelling of the story of this tournament must address some of the tragedies we have witnessed. We mourn the loss of Celestial Councilor Nai Jian, who was tragically killed in the savage attack on the Naixese Genome Project Data Hub and Incubation Center.

The crowd stays loud, but the mood grows darker. Joy turns to rage and boos and hisses can be heard instead of elated shouts.

SA: We mourn the loss of Nai Jian. She was a brilliant thinker whose contributions stretched from one area of expertise to another. I saw firsthand, while I worked with her in the NGP, how fiercely she committed herself to the work of genetics. But others can attest just as honestly that they saw her intelligence and drive applied to other fields. As a nation and a region, we grieve her passing and condemn those who killed her in the strongest terms.

The audience boos again in agreement.

SA: As I take over many of Nai Jian's responsibilities with a heavy heart, I want to voice to all of you that while Nai Jian's work has come to an end, the work of securing Naixi's genetic future has not. The Naixese Genome Project will rebuild. The Naixese race cannot and will not be wiped out, neither by the Golden People nor by these Guiding Hand religious zealots! Our racial traits - the racial traits of our ancestors who once toiled in agony - will be preserved, no matter the cost!

The crowd roars in support. While surely only a small minority actually support Mr. Sa's party, the Queer Anarchists (the junior partner within the government coalition), they share his devotion to the mission of standing up for the Naixese people.

LAI: We want all of you to know that Naixese babies will continue to be born, though we admit that a moratorium must be called on the national "zero births" policy. Biological reproduction will be temporarily re-legalized while the Deputy Prime Minister directs the repairs and improvements to the NGP. When our capacity to securely grow Naixese babies in vats is restored, we will once again forge forward, and make good on our promise to bring only the purest-blooded Naixese children into the world!

Scary rhetoric, all of the attending visitors to the CR44 Closing Ceremony think to themselves, but they are in the minority. The locals in attendance yell out their ardent support for Lai's words.

LAI: As for those responsible, these horrible rogues of the Guiding Hand...

Lai is cut off by the audience's boos.

LAI: These horrible rogues of the Guiding Hand, who have now contributed to not one but two of the assassinations of Celestial Councilors, will be brought to their knees by our crusade of revenge! We will hunt down the members of this terrorist organization and rip them out of our nation's bloody soil by the stem! And as for those who have been caught red-handed, they can no longer rely upon the leniency of liberal judges who wag their fingers at criminals and enforce empty punishments. No, justice will now be done, in the name of the people, by fate.

The crowd recognizes this as a reference to the planned Trial by Ordeal on the Red Coast.

LAI: In three months time, Fred Irving and Hao Hing Tan will, along with dozens of other enemies of the state, be ferried twenty miles out to sea and dumped overboard. If they can survive the long swim, the toxic chemicals, and the vicious, mutated octupi...

The audience's sick laughter rings out.

LAI: ...if they can survive the swim back to the coast, then justice will be done. Their innocence will be proclaimed. We'll see. Fate will decide.

Gales of nasty giggles continue.

SA: As fate decided the outcome of the 44th Copa Rushmori. And the nation will have the opportunity to watch on as we will have a fleet of drones recording the event and broadcasting it on live television. A number of carefully-vetted boaters and yacht owners will also be permitted to follow the barge out to sea. The Celestial Council will personally bear witness from one such yacht. It is, after all, the members of the Xu family who have experience the grief of these deaths most poignantly.

At last, a bit of respectful and reverent applause as the crowd claps.

SA: But Prime Minister Lai and I need not speak on behalf of the Celestial Council. The remaining six members are here with us tonight! Shall we all greet them?!

The audience roars, and the lights aimed at the mist upstage intensify. Dramatic music begins to ring from the PA speakers. A few lines of choreographed dancers scamper onto the stage. They are dressed like stereotypical triad members, and all of them carry large hammers or wrenches. They appear ready for a demolition, in a nod to the shattering of enormous glass bottles at Copa Rushmori 44's Opening Ceremony. Theatrically, the mist begins to depart as if by magic, revealing six more enormous green glass wine bottles. A Celestial Councilor is inside each bottle.

LAI: Ladies and gentlemen, your Huangdi, your Emperors and Empresses, the Celestial Council of Naixi!

The lights go fully up and the mist clears. The white-T-shirt-wearing gangster dancers begin hammering away at the walls of the green glass bottles. The crowd screams in support. But there seems to be a problem. The dancers can apparently only make superficial nicks on the surface of the glass. The bottles, sealed as they are, are death traps for the Councilors inside!

LAI: Uh... ladies and gentlemen, bear with us, here...

The crowd begins to quiet down and the music cuts out. Soon, all that can be heard is the panicked shouting of the dancers as they try to shatter the six gigantic bottles and the tremendous clanging of the hammers and wrenches on the glass. The Councilors inside appear distressed, but all begin to sink to their knees and slump over. The crowd, horrified, can only watch in silence.

SA: We pray as a nation. Please, everyone, pray that one will survive. Please pray. Pray that we still have one. Please pray. Please pray.

At last, a great crash as the green glass wall of one of the bottles gives way! A few cheers ring out as the dancers and stagehands pour into the opening that has been bashed into the bottle, and a rise in the hopes of all in attendance as they carry a Councilor out... and as the Councilor begins to shakily stand as the sole remaining Celestial Councilor and the true Huangdi of Naixi, the Prime Minister announces their reign...

LAI: It's a miracle! Fate has delivered victory to Naixi yet again! Ladies and gentlemen, my campaign promise was to restore real power to the Celestial Council. And I am proud to have made good on that promise! I call myself a monarchist with good reason! I am proud to present to all of you: her Majesty the Councilor and Empress of Naixi, Shu Kian!

Ninety minutes and a dream, a dream that was crushed with a flash of red and the overwhelming skill of a nation whom those in the Empire would claim to have been cultivated by the Empire itself. If reaching the Final again and being ninety minutes away from having captured the elusive sixth title that has seen generations of players and several different managers come and take their try at had been a dream, then the match itself was something of a nightmare. Defeating Banija was always going to be a very difficult proposition, they have developed a footballing culture that is near second to none, they have the multiple World Cup titles now to prove their dedication to the sport. This is not even taking into account the complex domestic league situation that they are a part of where their players are put through the pressure cooker on the regular with the strength of their own sides as well as the mental fortitude that one has to have with navigating the various Farf states to take on their neighbors in their combined top flight. Banija has become a shining diamond under the circumstances around them and are a beacon who has emerged from their situation to the pinnacle of the game.

Dan Eastwood was that close to having cemented himself as a genuine hero of the Vanorian people, having already perhaps been the most successful manager at the most successful club, Raynor City United. There was an obvious hangover among the squad in the regional tournament that followed and the Marauders were not able to replicate the success that they had found in the Finals in the regional championship. Eastwood now enters into what has been agreed to be his last cycle in charge of the Marauders, on the cusp of seventy and very little else that he has to achieve or to prove as a manager. Taking the Marauders to the World Cup and getting them the title that no one else in the last six decades have been able to achieve, it would be that last crowning achievement that will cement his legacy forever not just within the Empire but in the game itself, to have captured what was thought to be unobtainable by so many given the difficulty all four teams who have earned five titles have had in attempting to secure the sixth.

Despite the runner's up medal from the last World Cup, the team had not fared particularly well in the Qualifies and had the disaster that was the World Cup 93 Finals Group Stage, meaning that their accumulated points lands them not second but a quite distant fourth from the repeat champions of Banija in fourth. Rushmori giants and recent World Cup winners themselves Graintfjall sit comfortably in second, some ways ahead of the Marauders in fourth but equally behind Banija at the top, while independent powerhouse Zwangzug sits just ahead of the Empire in third, while cohosts Chromatika lead the chasing pack right on the coattails of the side in fifth. Five nations, four different regional block affiliations represented showing the depth and diversity in the game these days, the sort of depth and parity that makes the qualifying process far from a simple process of marching through the opponents, as we have been witnesses to quite a few times over the last few cycles. Victory and qualification is by no means a sure thing, even against the smallest minnow, as every team could have their day in the spotlight.

The team itself is largely unchanged from the team that was able to make it to the Final against Banija, although the changes that have happened are quite large in the ways that they might effect the team. Lothas Ludwig has once more been sent to the bench rather than be afforded a spot in the starting eleven, giving up his spot to Klara Holmberg, with her seven years his junior and having developed very well with her time in Squornshelous. Combined with the steady and surprisingly explosive partner of Hadi Lundström, who was carefully cultivated by Raynor City United, they are the tip of the spear and look on paper to be able to bag in goals in bunches with Hawk playing the supplier just behind. The captain and attacking midfielder is the rock of the team and the fulcrum from which the team is able to move, though the heart might yet be Barrientos who gets up and down the pitch with his own playmaking ability, perhaps the biggest underrated part of what makes the team tick. If the team can adapt to the new striker pairing, most matchdays should see quite a few fireworks from the attacking forces, where the defense need only bend and not break so that the Marauders may yet navigate through a challenging qualifying group once more.

Believe it or not, it's time for football.

The Sarzonian Department of Health and Athletics were given the green light to authorise the Sarzonian national football team to reassemble after a hiatus that brought with it great tumult. Questions surrounding the future of the team at first centred on manager Brady Reynolds and his tenure at the helm, one that saw the team fail to qualify for the Cup of Harmony.

However, one of the first things a cub reporter gets scolded about besides not reporting the final score or saying who won or if there were a draw is burying the lede. What's that, you ask? Long story short: It's pushing real real news well within an article. For instance, if Sarzonia were to lose to, say, Delaclava 2-0 but Reynolds were served his walking papers immediately afterward, it would be reporting on the match and all the accounts there in and then later in the article saying Reynolds was fired. Even worse if he were fired for reasons having nothing to do with football.

So what's the lede here? Since Sarzonia's last appearance in World Cup qualifying, the country has moved to a new region, Arrosia. The reason for the move? Rampant corruption on the part of Vilita in failing to report relationships between it and various client states, known through the multiverse as "puppet countries." This failure to report was at its most egregious in tournaments Vilita or its primary client state Turori were serving as co-hosts.

The result of the bombshell report was multiple longtime Atlantian Oceania nations breaking away and forming a new region, much like Anaia did over two years ago in Sarzonian time. We haven't determined the multitude of timelines in other parts of the multiverse, but suffice to say, the result is Sarzonia has a new home. In addition to that, the Incorporated Football Federation, at the direction of the Department of Health and Athletics, has voted to strip Vilita and Turori of their titles and runners up appearances in a variety of World Cup competitions, including vacating Oaker's 4-0 finals loss to Sarzonia in this country's lone World Cup title.

"The full extent of corruption on the part of Vilita and their various client states may never be completely known," President Grant Haffner said in a nationally televised address to a stunned nation. "With that said, I have met with Cabinet vice presidents and members of the leadership in Parliament. We have all mutually agreed that this is a difficult, but necessary step forward for this country in light of this information." Following the speech, Haffner announced he would have a sit-down meeting with Sarzonia's intelligence officials and Haffner's National Security Directorate.

"We need to determine how we failed to observe this action as it was happening. In addition, we need to discuss how it affects us and our interests moving forward," Haffner said.

As for the World Cup itself, the Sarzonian national team carry a rank of 231 into Group 6, a collection of countries that includes No. 6 ranked Farfadillis, No. 36 Kandorith, 59th ranked Xanneria, No. 72 Darmen, No. 94 Polar Islandstates, and other less familiar names. However, Reynolds said his team were not in a position to take anyone lightly.

"We lost a lot of our mojo after sitting out the World Cup as long as we did," he said. "We're going to need every seat filled at Dave Wilson Stadium in Woodstock for every match, no matter whom we play."

Greetings, compatriots!
It’s TTV and in connection with the approaching start of the qualifying tournament for the World Cup’95, we return back to the air practice of reviewing of new films that was shown at the recently held Second Sports Film Festival. First such a review was extremely successful, and clearly this format was loved by the channel’s viewers. It is noteworthy that this year the program of Festival included several foreign products, as well as a number of domestic films dedicated to the problems of sports abroad. As before, we will be reviewing films in random order, filling the pool of them with the ones that have received the most recognition marks from general audiences and critics. Let's make a remark that it is not necessary to have both to be included; assessments of these categories in our society usually do not diverge that far, since film critics in Trolleborg do not represent any special caste, just have a better understanding of the different aspects of the wizardry of producing film, but opinions still diverge to some extent.

So, welcome, the program opens with the mini-series, which name can be translated from the Trollish language roughly as “The stanchion\Column\Post of the Attack”. For a long time (and to no avail, we must note) in the football world there was a heated arguing whether a team should have a game scheme and players selected for it, or whether the scheme should be built based on the talents of the players coach has on hand. The series is dedicated specifically to the attempts of a certain provincial team, trying to win a place in the top six, under a new coach, to invent something new. It must be said with proud that our art reacts vividly to changes in society, and the recent dominance of five or six teams in the major league has already been reflected, and quite thoroughly – later you will see that not only in this film. “The Pillar of Attack”, which gave the name to the entire film, was ironically nickname for a large, powerful, but clumsy and technically limited forward, added to a team staffed mainly by short, light and fast-running players and practicing the according kind of tactics on the football field. The film features interactive elements, so the final episode exists in three different versions activated depending on the choices viewers make as the series progresses. Football fans expressed satisfaction that the sports part was depicted as it should, and ordinary spectators stick to the opinion that the drama was at the proper level, in the traditions of the masters of Trolleborg drama.

Fate decided that the second one to be in our review was the film, which name meaning again can not be translated without partial loss of connotations. After consulting with experts, we decide present it under name “Alien Sky, Our Own People”. This film observed how a native of a certain country on the mainland of the South Pacific, who came to Trolleborg to seek a better life, searches for his place in a new society. His passion for football helps him in this, leading him to the stands of the stadium in the city where he settled, and helps him a lot. The film devoid of interactive elements, but it must be watched in 4D, since with great skill it shows changes in the guest’s perception of the country: as the film progresses, much that seemed at first incomprehensible, gloomy and even threatening, from the appearance of buildings to the behavior of the country’s inhabitants, changes appearance and color, when hero begins to understand what's going on around, quite accurately, by all accounts, describing the process of acculturation in our society. For example, howling and menacing hooligans turned into a local folk that stick to the traditional way of life and try to emulate our ancestors strictly. The speech of the film’s characters seems increasingly understandable and rich as the guest of the country masters the Troll language and fits more and more into the cultural field.

KRISTIE ETTRICK IS FIGHTING FOR YOU AS WELL, IN HER OWN WAY

Assistant Manager Kristie Ettrick has had a long career as the number two on Mertagne's international football scene. Her history as "Hattrick Ettrick", a prolific striker for Lehen Neorudo during the Insulation, is well known to those in Touchpoint, and was instrumental in securing her first national managerial position as head of the Mertagnian U21 side. Her success in several youth tournaments quickly fast-tracked her to the senior side, and at one point Ettrick was the front runner to take the manager role in the wake of Tyrrel Gulliver's retirement. However, with Ázëwyn Fëanáro's surprise exit from the Starblaydi national team and subsequent appointment, Ettrick accepted her continued presence as number two. The Neorudan born assistant manager has long been anything but, with her comical outbursts on the side-lines and in interviews providing much colour commentary to the Mertagnian international football scene. Now nearly ten years into her career, and with Mertagne grasping to the possibility of entering the upper echelons of the sport against a bleak backdrop, Inkblot Magazine takes the time to do what many do when Ettrick speaks - listen.

I caught up with Kristie Ettrick at the new home of Mertagnian football, the campus surrounding the INDOMITABLE ARENA in Brandistock. This luxurious new space plays host to several brand new offices, including the head office of the Federation of Mertagnian Football (FMF), the continental offices for the Confederation of Anaian Football Associations (CAFA), and the association behind the Super League á Mertagne (SLAM). As I take a look from the courtyard of the FMF building, I can see that the lights in the CAFA building are all switched off, even now in the early afternoon. The outbreak of war on Mertagnian shores just a few short months ago has already sent international organisations such as the CAFA reeling from the country. The anti-aircraft guns on the top of the INDOMITABLE ARENA give everyone a fairly good reason to do so. Conflict is yet to arrive this far north, but nothing is off the table in these tricky times.

Times are even tougher for Kristie Ettrick - while she hasn’t been called to serve, the powers that be determining her job as assistant manager for the Mertagnian national team to be ‘vital for keeping the Mertagnian spirit alive’, as Minister for Sports and Culture Iain Durmont quoted in the National Forum just a few short weeks ago, Ettrick is undergoing an incursion of her own - a breakdown in her relationship.

She broaches this subject with me immediately upon the two of us meeting. I am ushered into a rather large canteen hall with bright yellow chairs scattered around several white round tables - although few people are actually eating at this time. Ettrick, with a plate of chips parked under her, stands up, wipes her hand on a napkin, shakes, and states: ”I don’t have anything interesting or salacious to say about the breakup. We just wanted different things from the relationship and weren’t working to maintain it in the correct way. I’m devastated it’s over, but I think it was the right thing for both of us. I wish him all the best in the future and sincerely hope he doesn’t get blown up by Bostopians.”

I laugh at that last part, as one has to in such a situation. Ettrick smiles at that. The Mertagnian football team’s assistant manager has, over the course of her career, become less and less reluctant to show any emotion that isn’t anger. When first appointed to the post, Ettrick was famous for her incandescent bouts of rage on the sidelines as Mertagne faced a divisive call, or a player took an injury that forced the team to change tactics. My first question to Ettrick is one that stops the smile and makes her think: Did she ever think she’d get here?

”In short, no. I didn’t think Mertagne would be playing international football in my lifetime, the way the Insulation was going.” It’s hard for some to remember that nearly two decades ago, Mertagne was undergoing its rebirth into the modern nation that stands today. “I’m proud to have been selected for the role, and I consider myself quite lucky that I’m still able to do it. It’s not come easy, however - I’ve certainly had to fight for it. I wouldn’t be surprised if you said I’d glassed a competitor somewhere down the line.”

Ettrick certainly has had to fight for her role - corruption scandals rocked the FMF six years ago, and Ettrick was in the middle of the media storm that saw several high-profile members sacked or resigning on corruption grounds. The ship has been self-righted, however, in no small part due to the antics of Ettrick’s superior in job role and age, Ázëwyn Fëanáro. I asked Kristie what she thought of the elf. “Ázëwyn was my hero growing up, and now that I've met her, I’ve realised she’s just a person. She picks her nose like everyone else does sometimes. Elves even go to the toilet. And she doesn’t use a fancy Dreamed Realm one like her poncey boyfriend does. She’s a very capable person, but then again, so am I. We compliment each other well, I think, and that’s resulted in a decent modicum of success for the Mertagnian national team. She’s very good at seeing the big picture. 4100-odd years of living will tend to do that to you.”

Many people have expressed concern that due to Fëanáro’s slowed ageing, Kristie will never get the big break that many people think she truly deserves. Ettrick sees that point of view: ”It’s obviously something to consider. I’m 49 now, which means I’m an old bint.. I’ve been in this exact role for an actual decade. I’ve flaunted my CV elsewhere, but I’ve never been able to land as high a profile job as this. Anything else would be a downgrade, and I’m better than that. Everyone knows that the ‘Assistant’ part of the title is only there because someone needs to be. Ázëwyn takes the fall on the big decisions and I get to be a little risky and get away with it. The team needs someone like me, someone to experiment when it’s not quite going as planned. I am able to affect more change here than I would at the top - the higher-ups at the FMF probably wouldn’t be okay with it. Then again, that’s never stopped me before, so maybe I should bump off the elf and take the top spot. She’ll get bored eventually. Hopefully before I shrivel up and become a skeleton.”

It’s Ettrick’s risky plays that have managed to elevate the Mertagnian squad to a solid set of finishes in recent tournaments, making their best ever performance in the CAFA earlier this year with a Quarter-Finals finish. The year before that, Mertagne managed a solid performance in the Cup of Harmony, losing to the eventual champions The Holy Empire in what was a bitter cycle that saw them knocked out of the playoffs by titans Valanora. The Green Goblins are on the up and up, and many pundits have predicted that this cycle, with its shorter qualifying cycle and playoff format, will finally be the cycle that Mertagne will grace themselves into the World Cup finals in the modern era. However, with issues at home thinning the talent pool, is Ettrick confident that they will get there?

”Obviously we’ll be going into these World Cup Qualifiers with a bunch of confidence, not all of it misplaced. We are the second seeds this time around, and on paper that would guarantee us a playoff spot. However, our qualifying group certainly has a lot of threats that could make things difficult for us. That’s usually been our role in tournaments in the past, the plucky spoiler that steals a few points away from the big dogs, nipping at their heels. Now, teams like Île de Richelieu and Beefsteak City will be looking to do that to us. We have hopefully learned how to avoid the common pitfalls we exploited in our opponents. Kick them back down where they belong and pull the ladder up from underneath us. Now that the field has been thinned a bit at the top following that scandal with Vilita and Turori, Mertagne are next in the pecking order for a World Cup berth.

As for the talent pool, we’re still working with a very solid squad. Many of these folks are only beginning to peak, and so you haven’t seen the best of them yet. You also haven’t seen the worst of them - I’ve had to hold Sakia Maker’s hair back when she’s puked in the tour bus toilet. With spirits running high here at home, too, the squad have even more to play for. I feel that those in this squad are the type to rise to the pressure instead of crumbling under it. Like Maker, for example - she was back on the pitch the morning after, albeit with a massive hangover. Can’t do that nowadays, sadly - the Bostopian’s’ll have you.”

Having the weight of a country’s hopes and dreams is a lot under any circumstances, but while the country’s spirits are dour, that can often make things even worse. A key boost in morale can come from the nation’s football fans, but with the presence of war, Mertagne’s home games will be played behind closed doors. I asked Kristie how she felt about not having such a vital component, that “13th player”, off the pitch. ”Obviously it’s a huge blow to not be able to have the home crowd. They can be arseholes when we’re not winning all the time, but I hope that they’ll all be able to watch and listen from their homes and provide the energy that I know they would provide in the stadium if they were present. I hope that the international community of neutrals can rally behind us when we play away instead, and still give some of that vital feedback that some of our more attention-hungry players need. Some of the ‘support’ we’ve shown nations like Aeragny and Île de Richelieu in their international debuts, held here in Mertagne, can hopefully be repaid on the road. I’d be livid if nobody reacted when - and it is a when - I flip off the crowd.”

On the topic of international support, I asked Ettrick for her opinion on the conflict with Bostopia - a conflict that, while in its infancy, has seen scorn from the international community on both sides, due in part to Mertagne’s role in making the first move outside of the Ochre Islands. Ettrick seemed shy with details, yet proud of her heritage. “It’s not my job to get involved with that sort of shite. Obviously my home, Neorudo, is on the front lines should the Bostopian ships come sailing across the Bekk, but the city is a natural fortress. We Rudans have survived worse. The Insulation conflicts. The plague. Everyone’s time in the sun ends sometime. Just means you have to hibernate until the next one. I don’t think it’ll come to that, though.” Ettrick’s ancestors, the Rudans, lived a simple life in and around Mount Leorudo before the Mertagnians settled nearly a century ago.

We pivoted back to the topic of the upcoming World Cup Qualifiers, and what that first qualification in the modern era would mean for the nation, as well as the team. ”This team is hungry for some success, obviously. Being the first to make the World Cup Finals in the modern era would enshrine them as Mertagnian heroes, especially in a time like this. Eyes are certainly falling to Rowan Emberson, but he’s keeping a cool head on his shoulders, and as captain of the team I think he’ll be looking to bring the team forward through his communication and his play. In the event of qualification, however, I think he’ll realise he’s allowed to feel something and you might even see a tear or two.”

Kristie Ettrick has left a few of her chips, and I leave our interview with a bit of a renewed sense of hope for the national football team. Ettrick’s fighting spirit and strong choice of words have been a mainstay for this scrappy team for nearly ten years now, and while the team has yet to clasp international success in the form of silverware, it is inevitable that soon this team - this nation - will get the win that it so desperately deserves in the face of adversity.

Kristie Ettrick was interviewed in Brandistock, Bardiche for Inkblot Magazine by journalist Itzalle Stihrrup.

World Cup 94 Qualification: Toxic Politics Spill Into the Pitches for the RQFA and The Bubonic Plague
JEAN-NOEL DOCHERY-SWANN

Members of The Bubonic Plague detonate their hand-held flares following Danny Markusson's tying goal on the 78th minute of the Independent Athletes from Quebec-The Kytler Peninsulae match at The Reneegrad last night. I.A. Quebec would win 3-2, with the Player of the Match honour given to Vicente Bautista Oleandro, the Kytleran playmaker drawing positive attention by Q-League and other international scouts after his two-assist performance against the Grim Reapers.

There is no doubt that the atmosphere at The Reneegrad can be spectacular. Usually used for the RQFA-sanctioned events, such as the RQFA Grand Final, the Coupe de la Reine Final Four, or numerous exhibition and the World Cup qualification stage matches of the Independent Athletes from Quebec senior team, the fireworks generated by the roars of the crowd and actual rows of fireworks generated upon player entrance more than enough to be seen from 200km away.

But when the World Cup 94 qualification stage unfolds, with the Grim Reapers set to take field at the national stadium for two of the home matches against Krytenia and HUElavia, there will be more than just the qualification stage that will bring the cameras to heat of the action. If anything's to go by the 80,000 fans, of which 72,000 of them were under home designation with the predominant majority belonging to The Bubonic Plague, as they gathered to the rebuilt Reneegrad for the highly-anticipated friendly against The Kytler Peninsulae, it would be anything but the traditional display of chaotic energy.

In the half-hour leading to a kickoff, the national stadium would transform from that of the traditional black-and-red banners and jerseys, into a sea of lemon yellow, a traditional colour of disgust among the Shingoryeoites, as well as dozens of incendiary flags and banners, to indicate their condemnation of the mostly passive diplomatic stances taken by incumbent NPD government under Irene Kweon Binnington.

This would follow the incident taken from two weeks ago, when the members of The Bubonic Plague were displaying the similar Anti-Binnington messages nearing diplomatic interventionism at the Quebec-Chromatika exhibition fixture at The Samseongoloondongjang in Songak. There both the QBC Sports and the FAS TV were heavily criticised for attempting to cover up both the sounds and the visuals behind the display, which would then be shared by l'Instagramme, Cica.Da, and on BingBong.

History of Quebecois hooliganism is one that is not unheard of, with the latest display of history being shown by the 2052 Reneegrad Riots when the ultras of Montreal Koreana and CSKA Quebec had burned down the previous rendition of the national stadium just a decade ago in a Shingoryeoite Superclassique match. Traditionally the Quebecois domestic clubs have traditionally taken the sides of their ultras, with whom many of them are owed support due to club ownership structures, and the RQFA would relatively ambivalent over it, with international critics considering the punishments metted out to both clubs to be mild in nature.

But the dynamics behind the current situation is an interesting departure where the leading enforcers happen to be The Bubonic Plague, the official ultras group of the 19th-ranked Team Quebec side that have been around since the 1990s. Usually known for their excessive use of pyrotechnics, torches and of course the hand-held flares, as well as tendency to blaring drums and Vuvuzelas nonstop, the Bubonic Plague have had their scenes abroad and at home, most notably contributing to the months of anti-police riots in Farolera that began during the World Cup 91 match better remembered as The Faroleran Bonfire.

The Bubonic Plague's stance have no doubt inspired and galvanised much of the Quebecois public, whose membership remains high at 3.14% of the population (three out of 94 million citizens), and it is considered a positive contribution to the Quebecois political and footballing climate. That said, the recent mix of political stances by the Bubonic Plague, which would only be further complimented by the harsh reactions at home and abroad following Cenian action to utilise closing ceremony of 2062 Jolbonopolis-Afanc Strait Olympics for dubious purposes, have led into a complicated situation with the Royal Quebecois Football Association (RQFA) and the Quebecois Government, which have consistently maintained a different attitude from the public.

The Bubonic Plague's conflict with the RQFA and the Quebecois Government is nothing new for those familiar with the level of public discourse that had emerged regarding the Great War of Farfadillis in the past half-decade. In Quebec the support for the Rulandese causes remain largely prevalent among the general public with a spike in recruitment numbers for Marco's Slaves by the RQFA, while there exists dichotomy on the sustained interest due to the Quebecois studies and interest of Ruland being considered world-class under the Institute of Rulandese Studies at Universite St. Croix, while the Faroleran diaspora constitutes the predominant majority of Quebecois of Farfadillis extraction.

This leads into a discord between multiple levels of authority to the public, as well as with other governments (see Huayramarca and Banija, who have explicitly stated their support for Szoirsia and Farolera). The RQFA is of no exception, with the older generation of national team legends such as the Varsteeg family conflicting with younger, more war-exposed veterans such as Rulandese Revolutionary Army General Erin Kang and her Rulandea Kosta successor Mathinna Bouck. Reports of 'toxic environment between the alumni-led administrators and the players group' are common.

Trying to stay away from possible controversies and sanctions that may occur from the Kweon Binnington Government, as well as the World Cup Committee, the RQFA have advised the home fans to 'minimise displays of political message in solidarity for their allies from The Kytler Peninsulae, whose nation has suffered a five-decade absence from international sports due to the tragedies that occurred at the 2014 Kytler Bay City-Zube Olympics'.

While prohibited from banning the Bubonic Plague from home games due to Access to National Teams Matches Act of 1998, the RQFA has stated that they are currently under the consultation phase to not issue any away team tickets allocated to them. In a statement listed by the RQFA, the federation stated that 'the acts of hostilities currently being promoted by the select members of The Bubonic Plague are beyond the level of professionalism our country promotes, and will not be approved, previously communicated or not'.

The Bubonic Plague remains unmoved by the threats, however, and have stated running against the tides of history with threats and bans will not stop them. The RQFA did, however, allow both Mipojoseon and PLI Islanders to release their Cenian internationals Corran Casa-Alta and Athena Foyer-Devatee on a free, with no additional expense to be charged by the East Coast sides.

'We have made a statement that the noninterventionist policy propagated by Kweon Binnington Government, one that lies upon solid foundations of trust and acceptable compromises, do not work, and have failed many across the Multiverse,' Jean-Louis Maher, the Director of Communications for The Bubonic Plague, told The Praetorian. 'This does start on federation level, to be clear, as the very root of the issue comes from the RQFA not caring for the lives of those who have suffered - they have defended Alex Teran and his brigade of injustice for far too long - and the Government does not do enough to bring the same dictator to justice.

'But this is not just on lack of action regarding the dictator whose downfall, while belated, is noted. There are also other issues where we have failed our people, both of Quebec and the rest of humanity, with our inability to prevent the invasion of Puerto Farolero by Marco Hertel's private army, and the Cenians' inappropriate, near-sighted use of an Olympic ceremony. This issue is multi-level, one that both the RQFA and the Government will have to address, and since that was not being done, the appropriate course of action had to be made.'

The Bubonic Plague also said to The Praetorian that The Bubonic Plague intends to continue demonstrating at most of their home games, and that they may boycott away games as a measure of demonstration. Furthermore they have promised additional round of action for the Reneegrad home games against Krytenia and HUElavia.

'We are unashamed of our stance towards the need of greater action Her Majesty's Government and the R.Q.F.A. has to take in matters that strike both home and abroad, and will continue to demand them,' said Florence Min, the Vice-Chairman of The Bubonic Plague's Reneegrad Action Brigade. 'We will fight on the benches, we will fight on the footballing grounds, we will fight on the trenches and in the skies, and we will fight away from home.

We will bring flares, thirty-tons of them each match, a half-dozen bazookas, and a missile or two, against Krytenia and HUElavia. This isn't just a threat. This will happen and we will detonate them when needed.'

The RQFA did not respond to The Praetorian's requests for a comment.

AN ODE TO GROUP 13

By Isaac, Prince Imperial
(the worst poet in the multiverse)

Behold my verse!

I have learned many interesting things about group 13 today
Which, in a peculiar way
Is the day on which I have chosen to write about group 13
In which some teams field teens
(Must remember to look that up and confirm).

At present there isn't much information about Sharktail except their rank
But sharks often swim in tanks.
For this information we must give thanks
Even if it doesn't tell us much about their tails.

Banija are a very successful team
Who have won the last two World Cups
But they haven't filed a roster with the World Cup Committee yet
But I am certainly willing to bet
That they are more than likely to win the group.
If we beat them to first it will be quite the coup.

And then there's us the Holy Empire!
It is to support them that I am writing poems that will inspire!
And look how HEFA does now conspire
To field the same team as the opposition.
'Empire' is a much harder word to find rhymes to than you might think.

Indusse have a fan base called 'The Flocking Blues'.
That's 'flocking', not the other word that follows the F with a U.
You have a very dirty mind, dear reader.

I know very little about Vilwandia because they have a very low rank.
A rank so low that some might say they stank.
But I won't, because I'm sure they're a great bunch of lads.
Though that said, 'Hansie Smuts' sounds like he's having dirty thoughts about the Flocking Blues.

Ethane and Damukuni still haven't filed rosters
With the World Cup committee as either forms or posters.
'Roster' doesn't really rhyme with 'poster', does it?
Well, I couldn't find another rhyme to fit.
Anyway, both teams have been around for a while
And I'm sure they'll post rosters that we can look at and file.

And then the group ends with the Santa-Barbara Amethysts
Unranked, unloved, bereft of human touch, and possibly all virgins.
(Not that there's anything wrong with that, mind;
I'm still to feel the gentle embrace of my beloved Zoe Carbonopsina).
Purple, Black, Gold are funky colours, and we'll be seeing ya
On the field of play, where we expect to win
For losing against an unranked side would be a sin.
Τί ἐστιν ἀλήθεια?
