Matchdays 21-25
The race for IFCF spots is on! With Avondale City’s pair of triumphs over 1830 Cathair (!!!!!) in the Challengers’ Cup round of 32 ahead of the Lime Greens’ eventual loss to Daremni outfit MTK Kingsville United, the League Number One has confirmed itself as one of the best 32 leagues in the multiverse and as a result, a second team will qualify for the IFCF Champions League, while fifth place will also play IFCF football. This means that a team finishing as low as seventh will have the opportunity to play in the CEdC, further incentivising mid-table clubs to put more effort into building a squad capable of playing midweek games. With five wins on the trot after their new manager bounce wore off for a couple of months, Capitol Athletic have climbed all the way up into fifth place from tenth five rounds ago, whilst Dodle have done the exact opposite and recorded a grand total of zero points over the same period of time. For a side that was at one stage challenging for a Champions League place - although they didn’t know it at the time - to fall to seventh so quickly is rather disappointing no matter the fact they were only promoted last year. Joining them in mediocrity are Cleorough, who have dropped back down to eighth after being mere points off a top four berth not so long ago, although they are still firmly in the race for CEdC qualification - with a gap of five points to the Maroons, top five looks a step too far at the moment, even with their current form. Also in contention for sixth and seventh place are Avondale Beach and Kirkham Sentients, both of which will snap at the opportunity to play more games with their deep squads but in order to reach that mark, they will need to dethrone one of Dodle or AFC Droves, the latter of whom appear incredibly solid at this point in time. While Tahlia Dawson’s side may not be performing quite as well as they were a couple of years ago when they were in genuine title races, there is no doubt that they are well and truly overperforming considering their budget and current squad. If you’d told any fan of the Burgers four years ago that they would be expecting international football every season in a few years’ time, they would have laughed at you and walked away. For a side who has spent so much time in the League Number Two before being promoted, why would you believe anyone who said that?
At the top of the table, Avondale City surely have the title wrapped up - they currently hold a whopping twelve point lead over the second-placed Pesfield Trees - and considering their performances on the international stage as well, there should be no doubt that they are currently the best club in the nation. However, their heroics have opened up an opportunity for those in the tier beneath them to also qualify for the Champions League, with the Trees, Chamberley City and Betham FC all a point apart from second to fourth place. Considering Hugo Beland’s Pesfield currently hold a point lead over their rivals and have the added advantage of having already faced Avondale City twice, they appear the obvious favourites for second place. At this stage of the season, though, one upset can completely change the dynamic and as a result, no one can afford to take any minute of any match for granted. Meanwhile, down the bottom, Fridge FC have officially been relegated to the League Number Two and are still stuck with the six points they’ve been on for the past half year, while Halpenley United are still sticking with Graeme Lee-Morris despite relegation being all but assured - the gap to Dunkirk Athletic in fourteenth now lies at eleven points. As for that unenviable playoff spot, anyone from Mid-Capital in eleventh down are fighting to stave off the possibility of relegation for despite the fact that each and every one of Mid-Capital, Marbury FC, Kirkham Appliances and Dunkirk Athletic boast significantly stronger squads than any League Number Two team, anything can happen in the heat of the moment. It’s not like being a League Number One team makes you automatically better than any second division team anyway - one look at Fridge FC’s recent performances tells you that they’ll probably struggle in the fourth division. Not good signs for next season, even with significantly easier opposition. Not even some local suburban under-12 division five team are going to concede four goals to Piper Brombie’s Marbury FC. To concede three more goals after your opponents completely shut up shop is… not very good to say the least.
The demise of the Sentients is here. Will we ever see them return to their former glory?
