Dantopian Division 1

The Dantopian Division 1 (sometimes shortened to D1) is the highest level of the Dantopian football league system. Contested by twelve clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the only other division within the Dantopian Football Association's (DFA) league system — Division 2 (D2). The makes up the entirety of the DFA's two-tiered, closed league system. A four team expansion of this system was instituted in Season V, and further expansion is certainly possible in the future.

Division 1 is the most-watched sports league in Dantopia, and is hoping to grow its audience internationally. The league takes advantage of a lucrative television rights deal with Papaya, a Dantopian technology company, who have exclusive live match rights. Dantopian Television (DTV) have a license to show highlights, and also to sell those highlights to international broadcasters as well.

Competition format

A single season spans thirty-eight gameweeks in total, and is split into two phases. The first phase sees each team playing the other eleven sides a total of three times — either two home fixtures, and one away fixture, or vice-versa — which results in thirty-three matches played. In the second phase, the league is split in two, with the top six sides playing each other a further one time, and the bottom six sides doing the same. The discrepancy in balance between home and away fixtures is addressed in the second phase, so in all, every team plays a total of nineteen home fixtures and nineteen away fixtures across a season. At the end of the second phase, the team with the most points is crowned the league champion, and the team that finishes with the worst record is relegated to Division 2. The winner of Division 2 will then take the relegated team's place in the following campaign.

Teams are awarded three points for a win, one point for a draw, and no points for a loss. Teams are then ranked by overall points. In the event of a tie on points, goal difference is first considered, followed by goals scored, then in descending order; head-to-head points; head-to-head goal difference, and head-to-head goals for. If still equal, a coin toss is used to determine position, except for in the situation when either the championship, or relegation position is tied. In that instance, a play-off match at a neutral venue decides the outcome.

IFCF Qualification

See International Domestic Soccer Newswires 2

Dantopian domestic teams are eligible to qualify for club tournaments held by the International Federation of Club Football (IFCF). The league champion of Division 1 is eligible for entry into the IFCF Champions League (CL) the following season. The next three clubs — positions two; three ; and four — are eligible for entry into the IFCF Challengers Cup (ChC). The winner of the DFA Cup is eligible for entry into the IFCF Cup Winners' Cup (CWC). If a side that finished within the top four places wins the DFA Cup, they are therefore eligible for entry into two IFCF tournaments.

SEASON SUMMARY — By SAUL ARNSTEIN Chief Football Correspondent, The Lion City Leader
The inaugural season of the Dantopian Football Association's (DFA) Division 1 saw Lion City FC come out victorious — on goal difference — over Dartford City. To further add insult to injury, Lion City FC narrowly defeated the Clippers 1-0 in the first edition of the DFA Cup final too. Striker Barry Paine led the way in terms of scoring in the league, and also secured the Player of the Season award as well. Brent-Bartholomew Barnham came away with the most assists. Adebayo Adeyemi was the standout young player of the season, and Harold Northgate won the manager of the season award. Northgate would then quickly be poached for the Dantopian national team in time for their first venture into international football in the South Pacific Cup, a tournament the Lions would go on to win. The Venice Villains were relegated to Division 2, to be replaced by the Rockport Rovers for the following season.

SEASON SUMMARY — By SAUL ARNSTEIN Chief Football Correspondent, The Lion City Leader
The second season of the DFA's Division 1 took place following the Dantopian national team's World Cup 94 qualifying round exit. Dantopia's first official foray on the World Cup qualifying stage was met with intrigue and anticipation of the nation's domestic league. As a result, many foreign players and managers joined the league this season, albeit most only on one-year deals. The winner of Division 1 was the Grenadiers — who secured their first title under the brief stewardship of Danny Haverhead — who also won manager of the season. The DFA Cup final was a closely contested affair between the two Dartford teams — with Dartford City coming out on top, by form of penalty shoot-out. Dartford Oilers forward Michael Danchevy topped the scoring charts with 24, but player of the season went to his international team compatriot, Adebayo Adeyemi — for the Grenadiers. Fellow Grenadiers Charles Terzaghi secured the most assists, and the young player of the season went to the Portland Pirates, and Evinea's own, Raphael Kwaku — one of few internationals who signed on for the long haul. East Bay United were relegated to Division 2, to be replaced by their local rivals, the Waiakea Warriors, for the following season.

SEASON SUMMARY — By SAUL ARNSTEIN Chief Football Correspondent, The Lion City Leader
The third season of the DFA's Division 1 saw the swift exodus of a number of international players and managers, following the expiry of their one-year contracts the prior season. Only a few international players stayed in the Division, most notably from the nations of Corinthina and Macronesia, both with close cultural ties to Dantopia. A new D1 winner was crowned — the Dartford Oilers coming out on top — on goal difference over Apollo FC, behind an impressive breakthrough campaign from their young Corinthinian striker Oskar Olsen — who also parted with the top goalscorer, player of the season and young player of the season awards. Cliff Clamber provided the most assists, and manager Derek ten Hogg won the manager of the year award, rounding off a clean sweep of the awards for the Oilers. The DFA Cup final saw a huge upset — the Chester Chiefs romping to victory against Lion City FC, following an early red card for the Royals — they capitulated soon after, and this summed up an awful season for them, as they had also dropped to sixth in the league table too. Pacific FC, who had been circling the drain near the bottom of the league for a few seasons, were finally relegated, to be replaced by East Bay United — who made a swift return to the top flight following their relegation the season prior.

SEASON SUMMARY — By SAUL ARNSTEIN Chief Football Correspondent, The Lion City Leader
The fourth season of the DFA's Division 1 was unique in that there was no relegation this year. Instead, the league would be expanded the following season to twelve teams, and therefore the top two sides from Division 2 would be promoted. The league-wide restructuring and expansion would see a number of teams added to the Dantopian footballing pyramid the following season. Yet another new D1 winner was crowned — this time Dartford City, who came out victorious in a tightly fought contest between the top five teams that year. Last season's league winners, the Dartford Oilers, came out on top in the DFA Cup final, over Division 2 side Northridge Navigators, but only after extra time — and they had a season to forget in the league, dropping to sixth place. Raphael Kwaku of the Portland Pirates achieved the most goals this campaign, and was also awarded with player of the season. Will Fodderingham of Dartford City recorded the most assists. A breakout season for young striker Bradini Brunson of Lion City FC saw him win young player of the season. Iokepa Kaitiaki won manager of the year award after successfully steering his Clippers side to the title. The Rockport Rovers saved themselves from the embarrassment of relegation, and the Corinthinians and Pacific FC were added to D1 for the following campaign.

SEASON SUMMARY — By SAUL ARNSTEIN Chief Football Correspondent, The Lion City Leader
The fifth season of the DFA's Division 1 was the first with the new 12-team format. Following the first phase, where each team plays all others three times — for a total of 33 matches, the league is split in the second phase, where the top six sides play each other once, and the bottom six play each other once — thus totalling 38 matches to complete the season. The top six sides in the first iteration of this format were the Portland Pirates — who went on to win their first league title; Lion City FC; the Grenadiers; the Waiakea Warriors; the Dartford Oilers; and Apollo FC. Dartford City had a sharp decline following their league title the previous campaign, having had their manager Iokepa Kaitiaki poached by Lion City FC following the conclusion of the previous season. In the bottom six, it was Pacific FC who went back down to Division 2, to be replaced by the Northridge Navigators for the following season. Whilst the league was out of grasp for Kepa Kaitiaki at his new club, he did manage to lift the DFA Cup, with a win over local rivals the Grenadiers on penalties. Raphael Kwaku led the league in scoring once again, netting 31 times for a Pirates attack firing on all cylinders under the tutelage of 36-year-old rookie head coach, and former Pirates player, Geoff Hendrickson — who's first season on the job culminated with a manager of the season award for him. Kaitiaki unlocked the creativity of playmaker Ben Sigrah for Lion City FC, and he was rewarded with both top assister and player of the season awards. Finally, following his transfer to the Waiakea Warriors from the Dartford Oilers, 21-year-old Omari Opetaia was finally gifted ample game-time and had a breakthrough campaign, winning young player of the season.

SEASON SUMMARY — By SAUL ARNSTEIN Chief Football Correspondent, The Lion City Leader
The sixth season of the DFA's Division 1 continued the newly established 12-team league format, with a first and second phase split. The top six sides this season were Apollo FC; Dartford City; the Dartford Oilers; the Grenadiers; Lion City FC; and the Portland Pirates. The Grenadiers were victorious in their pursuit of their second league title — led by the returning Dani Spaghetti, following his stint abroad at Sareña FC in Cardenao. Spaghetti assumed the captaincy of Simon Brazil's Grenadiers side and the won player of the season award, alongside his manager winning manager of the season award. In the bottom half of the league, the Corinthinians; the Chester Chiefs; East Bay United; the Northridge Navigators; the Rockport Rovers; and the Waiakea Warriors battled it out, and it was the Corinthinians who would lose out and be relegated from the top flight, to be replaced by Team Valiant — formerly the Venice Villains — in the following season. In the DFA Cup Final, the Chester Chiefs won out over the Dartford Oilers and clinched their second title from the competition. Oskar Olsen and Cliff Clamber led the way in the scoring and assist charts for the Dartford Oilers, who boasted by far the best attack in the league, but also the leakiest defence. Kai Watanabe of East Bay United was the stand-out young player of the season, and this would earn him a move to the Portland Pirates in the following campaign.

SEASON SUMMARY — By SAUL ARNSTEIN Chief Football Correspondent, The Lion City Leader
The seventh season of the DFA's Division 1 saw a very tight three-way race for the title between the Grenadiers; Lion City FC; and Portland Pirates. The Pirates would come out on top with a final match-day victory, securing their second league title in three seasons. Star man and talisman striker Raphael Kwaku would win player of the season, and Geoff Hendrickson won his second manager of the season award. In the DFA Cup, the Chester Chiefs would win their third domestic cup in five seasons, proving their penchant for the trophy, and securing the win over the Grenadiers by the same scoreline as they had against the Dartford Oilers the prior season. Adebayo Adeyemi returned to the Dantopian league with his boyhood Grenadiers team, and whilst he could not bag the league or the DFA Cup, he would secure the most assists this campaign. His stint over at Pesfield Trees in Sylestone unfortunately didn't work out the way he had intended, but a return back home revitalised his career. Apollo FC and both Dartford clubs would make up the rest of the top six. At the bottom of the table, the cup winning Chester Chiefs would struggle with league form, but it would be newly promoted Team Valiant not proving valiant in their effort to remain in the top flight, heading back down to Division 2 — to be replaced by the Aberdeen A's in the following season. Bradini Brunson led the league in scoring for an offensively brilliant Lion City FC, but head coach Kepa Kaitiaki would find himself under increasing scrutiny and pressure following his second successive season with no silver-wear. Macronesian youngster Rokuchō Buliche would emerge as the young player of the season for Apollo FC.

SEASON SUMMARY — By SAUL ARNSTEIN Chief Football Correspondent, The Lion City Leader
The eighth season of the DFA's Division 1 didn't see such a tight three-horse race like the season prior, but instead a season of dominance from the capital's premier club, Lion City FC. In fact, such was the dominance from the Royals, that they were able to entirely rest their starting eleven heading into the second phase — as they had already mathematically won the league. The 104 total goals scored for them was a D1 record, and contributing massively to those goals were Dantopian striker Bradini Brunson and dual national Dantopian/Tumbran midfielder Jeremiah Taramiah — each walking away with goalscoring and assist records, and of course the top goalscorer and top assister for the season awards respectively. The 34 goals scored by Brunson in just 33 games — he sat the final 5 of the season, as mentioned earlier — meant he also won player of the season. The trophy drought also finally ended for Lion City FC manager Kepa Kaitiaki, as he walked away with both the league title and DFA Cup, following a thrilling 4-3 win over rivals the Portland Pirates, and also won manager of the season to boot. Zeke Edwards emerged as a young star in the making for the Waiakea Warriors, and he won young player of the season at just 17 years of age. It was a second successive season to forget for the Dartford Oilers, and they finally parted with their struggling manager Derek ten Hogg, replacing him with recently retired former defender Gary McGoldrick. However, their season was not as poor as that of the Aberdeen A's, who only won three matches across the campaign, and finished with the lowest tally ever in D1 history, a measly 18 points. They were relegated to Division 2, to be replaced by Team Valiant for the following season.

SEASON SUMMARY — By SAUL ARNSTEIN Chief Football Correspondent, The Lion City Leader
The ninth season of the DFA's Division 1 saw a close race between the two current, eminent powers of Dantopian football; Lion City FC; and the Portland Pirates. The top six remained nearly identical, with Apollo FC substituting the Chester Chiefs, but neither Apollo FC; Dartford City; the Grenadiers; or the Waiakea Warriors were able to keep up with the top two sides, who were locked into a fierce battle for the title. It would be the reigning champion Lion City FC who would come out victorious in the end, winning their third overall D1 title. Both the Royals and all-blacks boasted fearsome attacks — scoring over 100 goals each this season — but Pirates striker Raphael Kwaku would emerge as the top scorer of the year, with a record breaking 36 goals across the league campaign. This was enough to win him player of the season as well, his third time winning the award. His teammate Nico Hollins would rack up the most assists of the campaign. Young player of the season would go to Elleby Young of Apollo FC, who almost managed to secure a DFA Cup title for his side, but the historic cup run of Division 2 side the Corinthinians prevented the young Dantopian in the final. The Corinthinians had secured the services of recently sacked Derek ten Hogg from the Dartford Oilers, a true boon for the small club from Lion City. ten Hogg's guidance saw the Corinthinians finish second in Division 2 — just shy of the promoted Shoreline Sharks — but all-importantly, the Corinthinian manager was able to guide the club named after his nation's-sake all the way to an unlikely DFA Cup victory. Unfortunately for ten Hogg, D2 managers are not eligible for D1 manager of the season awards, so the title went back to Kepa Kaitiaki of Lion City FC. At the bottom of the table, East Bay United would be relegated, and replaced with the aforementioned Shoreline Sharks for the following season.

DFA Cup — Runners Up

Club Synopsis:
One of three Division 1 clubs from Lion City — the capital of Dantopia — Apollo FC are based on the southern shoreline of the Awa Nui river, which flows through the nation's capital. The stadium is located in the trendy neighbourhood of New Greenwich — originally part of Lion City's docks. After the docks closed, the area became derelict and fell into disrepute, but following decades of redevelopment and rejuvenation it now stands as one of Lion City's most wealthy and attractive neighbourhoods, with tech industry giants and the nouveau riche flocking to the area.

Over the last number of years, the club have prioritised youth development over star signings — though certainly don't lack the financial resources to attract one or two bigger names into the fold. An emphasis on free-flowing, attacking play is preferred by the board and fans alike, but more recently, this has been somewhat lacking. The majority of fans of the club come from the southern half of Lion City, though the neighbouring Grenadiers do attract slightly more of the fanbase south of the river.

Apollo FC maintain a competitive rivalry with all the Lion City clubs, but the most heated of these rivalries is with their local neighbours — the Grenadiers. 'The Greenwich derby', as the fixture has become to be known by, is fiercely contested between the two sides. There is also the unofficial 'Lion City Cup' which has been affectionately created by fan groups of the top division teams from the capital. This season it will be three clubs — Apollo FC; the Grenadiers; and Lion City FC — scored on their head-to-head records against each other — with a trophy presented to the official supporters' trust of whichever team is the winner come the end of the season.

The state of the art Quay Arena — opened in eleven years ago — and is notable for its giant dome structure and retractable roof. It is located right on the riverfront — in the Greenwich Quays, hence it's name. Unfortunately — because the Quay Arena is a multi-sport venue — the distance between the seats and the pitch can sometimes lead to a slightly less vibrant atmosphere than other clubs on match-days, though the fans do try their best to make up for the disparity as much as possible.

Club Synopsis:
Based in the small city of Chester, just a ways east of Portland, on the way towards Waiakea and the east coast, the Chester Chiefs have been a steady Division 1 participant since the league's founding. What Chester lacks in size as a city, it more than makes up for in character. It's known for being a bit of a quirky town, and has a thriving arts scene, as well as many museums, parks and coffee houses. The city's wide-spread adoption of counter-culture is well known throughout Dantopia, and often matches against teams from the big four cities — Lion City; Dartford; Portland; and Waiakea — can bring with them a little extra spice because of the local fans adopting an underdog, or even siege mentality against what they perceive to be 'establishment' teams.

The Green & Whites — aptly nicknamed for their green and white stripes — have, however, struggled to keep up with these clubs from the larger cities over the years, but have certainly found their feet in the DFA Cup — Dantopia's domestic trophy — winning the tournament three times so far. Fans have affectionately named the act of winning the trophy 'wearing the Chief's hat', which has caused ire when another team has occupied the title of cup winners in recent years.

The Chester Chiefs are managed by 66-year-old Archie Patterson, a pragmatic manager that who favours experience over youth, and is a fan of lots of crossing opportunities. His sides have typically featured full-backs with an ability to cross, target forwards and playmaking midfielders. He has been a long-standing servant to both the club and the city of Chester, and is respected and admired by the fanbase, almost like a grandfather figure.

The Chiefs play their home matches at Pleasant Park, a ten-year-old stadium that was built directly on the spot of its previous iteration of the same name. Its metalwork roof weighing well over 10,000 tons gives the stadium a larger appearance than its capacity suggests, and its façade and semi-translucent rooftop add and abundance of light and airiness.

Club Synopsis:
Dartford City is one of two clubs based in Dantopia's second city of Dartford — located on the southern, windward shore of the main island, about 130 km (80 mi) to the south east of Lion City. Dartford City feature a clipper on their badge, owing to the rich maritime history of the city of Dartford, as it has always been one of Dantopia's major ports. As such, the team are sometimes referred to as 'The Clippers'. Their stadium is located on the eastern side of the city of Dartford, with their crosstown rivals — the Dartford Oilers — occupying a space to the west of them. This has led to residents of Dartford often picking their club allegiance based on their geographical location — with fans in the east most often supporting Dartford City, and fans in the west choosing to support the Dartford Oilers.

The Clippers are now a number of years removed from their title winning triumphs under previous manager Kepa Kaitiaki — who was since poached by Lion City FC, and has been enjoying recent success there. However, the team have retained the services of a number of key players from Kaitiaki's old side. Team captain Will Fodderingham experienced a brief stint abroad at Pretihouse Pirate FC in Stevencousin, but returned to his boyhood club a few years ago. Dartford City are now under the helm of one of their old players, Gerard Pardo. The former centre-back has been tasked with trying to re-assert Dartford City as a major player in Division 1, but defensive frailties — that wouldn't have occurred when he was playing — have started to creep in, and the Clippers have begun to slip down the table.

The Dartford City Stadium was completed five years ago, and both Dartford teams now boast state of the art arenas. City's is the smaller of the two stadiums — on account of them having a slightly smaller fanbase — but is the marginally newer of the two grounds, having opened three years after the Oilers' Bank of Dantopia Stadium. The aforementioned Oilers are City's major rivals, with the 'Dartford derby' being hotly contested between the two sides. There has also been a competitive rivalry with the Portland Pirates in the past — one which they actually share with their neighbours to the west, and a lesser rivalry with Pacific FC, the Pirates' neighbours. The cities of Dartford and Portland — being only 55 km (34 mi) away from each other, and both being port cities — have always contended with each other, an animosity often shared by their sporting teams too.

Last Season:

Club Synopsis:
The Dartford Oilers are the other club from the city of Dartford — Dantopia's second city, situated 130 km (80 mi) south-east of the capital, on the windward side of the island. The Dartford Oilers are often simply called 'the Oilers' or even 'the Orange' when they play, and they are one of the more widely supported teams in Dantopia, not just within the city of Dartford. Their impressive stadium is located on the western side of the city, and their crosstown rivals — Dartford City — are located to the east. Citizens of Dartford can generally be split east vs. west over their footballing allegiances — with fans in the more populous west side most often supporting the Oilers, and fans in the less populated east choosing to follow Dartford City. The name of the club owes to the historic Dantopian Oil industry, which used to extract under-sea oil off the southern coast of the island nation. Dartford was a major hub for this industry, but the wealth extracted has since been invested into a sovereign wealth fund for Dantopian citizens, and oil drilling completely ceased.

The Orange have always fielded sides that combine their youth academy talent with a number of star signings, and as such will look to recruit via the transfer market most off-seasons. Some of their academy success stories have included star national team forward Michael Danchevy, and the technically gifted winger Maverick Johnson. As one of the most well-supported sides in Dantopia, the Oilers regularly meet capacity on match-days at the Bank of Dantopia Stadium, which was opened eight years ago and features a signature retractable roof design. The atmospheres created on match-days in the arena are some of best in all of Dantopia, and fans can be regularly heard chanting 'attack, attack, attack'. The Oilers have generally favoured fast, counter-attacking sides, and their current crop of stars best suit this style of play.

Dartford City are the Oilers' main rivals, and the two sides compete in the 'Dartford derby'. There is also a strong animosity towards the Portland Pirates — owing to the historic rivalry between the closely situated cities of Dartford and Portland. Though not rivals as such, the Dartford Oilers have enjoyed fiercely competitive matches against the larger Lion City teams — the Grenadiers and Lion City FC. Under the stewardship of their previous manager Derek ten Hogg, the Oilers won the title and a domestic cup, but recent seasons had been a disaster, and so new leadership was sought in the form of Gary McGoldrick, a former defender for the Oilers and the Dantopian national team. Their counter-attacking will always be a major feature of their game under McGoldrick, who is keenly aware of the culture of the club, and eager to get them back to their best.

Last Season:
Division 1 — 3rd, 17 W; 9 D; 12 L; 55 GF; 44 GA; +11 GD
DFA Cup — Semi-Final

Club Synopsis:
The second of the three clubs from the nation's capital — The Grenadiers are the most popular club from the New Greenwich district, beating out arch-rivals Apollo FC in terms of support — though falling behind Lion City FC overall — thus being the second most widely supported team from the capital. The Grenadiers' official name includes the initialism 'N.G.L.C.' in it. This simply stands for New Greenwich, Lion City — which is where the club are based. They play their games at the 67,215-seat Dantopian Airways Stadium, located just a stone's-throw away from their arch-rival's home ground, also on the Awa Nui riverfront in the Greenwich Quays. The stadium was completed six years ago.

The Grenadiers have always liked their squad to be a mix of academy talent and star signings. Adebayo Adeyemi is one such academy prospect, now a wily veteran, and one of the leaders of the team. Others include Will Cross, Enzo Rossi and Eli Ngata, all important members of the side. Dani Spaghetti serves as the team captain. The side have twice been victors of Division 1, once under the stewardship of Tikariotian manager Danny Haverhead, and once under their current manager Simon Brazil, who, prior to his role at the Grenadiers, had a stint as assistant head coach to the Dantopian national team under Harold Northgate. Brazil will be managing his final season this year, as he is looking to retire at the end of it. His assistant, Devin Gilmoon is being tipped to take over the following year.

Brazil has steered the club well during his tenure, never finishing below 4th place in the table. However, a recent stagnation — three consecutive third place finishes behind the Portland Pirates and Lion City FC — have slightly soured his final few seasons. The prevailing view amongst fans is that he no longer possesses the ability to compete with those two powers, who have in recent years pulled away at the top of the table. His retirement, therefore, comes at an opportune time — according to much of the fanbase — as they seek fresh input in future seasons in order to challenge for the title once more. Like their sworn rivals Apollo FC, the Grenadiers also compete fiercely with the other Lion City Clubs, and participate in the unofficial 'Lion City Cup' every season. The Grenadiers, alongside Apollo FC and Lion City FC will be scored on their head-to-head records against each other this year, and a trophy will be presented to the official supporters' trust of whichever team comes out on top.

Club Synopsis:
The premier club in Lion City — the wealthiest, most successful, and most widely supported in all of Dantopia actually — Lion City FC would be the flagship football club for Dantopia if there ever were such a thing. As a result of this, they are widely despised by opposition fans — seen as the establishment that must be brought down. Lion City FC's fans love to refer to the club as 'The Football Club', something which doesn't go over too well with other team's supporters, who find the attitude of the fans a little elitist at times.

The Royals, as they are sometimes also called — on account of their royal blue shirts with a lone red diagonal stripe — boast an impressive squad; one of the best managers in the league — Kepa Kaitiaki; and one of the league's top strikers — Bradini Brunson. The side play an attractive, attacking brand of football, which has seen records broken with goals scored. Lion City FC are currently back-to-back reigning champions of Division 1 — the first back-to-back winners in it's history. They also won the DFA Cup the season before last to become the first double winners in Dantopian football history as well. Their recent success has been almost unmatched, save for the Portland Pirates, who have been going toe-to-toe with them in the league.

They play their home matches at Gēcko Arena, built eighteen years ago, but expanded and modernised six years ago. The stadium is designed like a concert hall with good acoustics in mind so as to optimise the atmosphere on a match-day. The corners of the stadium are enclosed and the stands are placed close to the pitch, with fans generating a 'wall of sound' that can reverberate around the ground. The stadium is a multi-purpose venue and also serves as host to concerts and other live performances too.

Lion City FC have strong rivalries with the other Lion City clubs, the fiercest of these being with the Grenadiers. However, it has been their competitive rivalry with the Portland Pirates in recent seasons which has seen the most tension, and attention from fans. There is of course the 'Lion City Cup', created by fan groups of Lion City-based clubs. The Royals will be up against Apollo FC and the Grenadiers this season — scored on their head-to-head records — with a trophy being presented to the official supporters' trust of the victor at the end of the campaign.

Club Synopsis:
The Northridge Navigators have been a steady, albeit uninspiring team, in Dantopia's top-flight for a number of years now. An unlikely appearance in the DFA cup final in season VI was the closest the Navigators came towards winning something other than the Division 2 crown — but they lost out to the Dartford Oilers in extra-time. They hail from the rather classy and sophisticated Northridge suburb of Portland, and therefore have local rivalries with both the Portland Pirates and Pacific FC. Their most intense rivalry, however, is with the Chester Chiefs — which has come about as a result of both teams languishing in the lower portions of Division 1 for the better part of the last few seasons.

The marine blue and sea green shirts play into the nautical theme of the club which, ironically, is a ways away from the Portland harbour, but the city of Portland boasts a rich maritime history — with all three clubs from it possessing ocean-themed named; the Navigators; the Pirates; and Pacific FC. 'The Wayfarers', as they are sometimes called, are managed by Luke Goldstein, a relatively youthful, up-and-coming coach, who has unfortunately inherited a rather tired and ageing squad. Bookmakers have long odds on the Navigators finishing anywhere outside of the bottom half of the table this season, with most expecting a relegation scrap. Still, veteran striker Marcus Caldwell does have an eye for goal, and will certainly try his best to keep the goals flowing for 'the Wayfarers' this season.

The Navigators play their home games at the Ridgeway Stadium, named after the road the ground is situated on. It is an old ground, but has undergone a modern facelift within the last 15 years to bring it in line with other Division 1 stadiums across Dantopia. The stadium originally included a race track, but this was removed and the pitch sunk by 2 metres (6 ft 5 in) — and the stands were extended down to the new pitch, to increase the capacity by around 8,000 seats. Fans are proud and loyal to their team — with games being sold out affairs, but they are often unable to present an intense atmosphere to matches. Rivals claim this is to do with the suburb of Northridge being quite wealthy and well-to-do, compared to other pockets of the surrounding city of Portland.

DFA Cup — Quarter-Final

Club Synopsis:
The Portland Pirates are the other Division 1 club from Portland this year. The Pirates are the largest club in Portland — in terms of financial might and fan-base. They lay their claim to the central and eastern parts of the city of Portland, a city which is situated along the southern, windward shore of the main island, approximately 185 km (115 mi) to the east of the capital, and only 55 km (34 mi) away from the city of Dartford. Portland was a major port historically, just like its neighbouring city of Dartford. As a result, the two cities are always looking for the competitive edge over one-another, especially when it comes to football. The Pirates therefore maintain rivalries with both Dartford City and the Dartford Oilers, as well as with other local sides too. Their main derby is with Pacific FC — currently in the second division — but they have recently developed a fiercely competitive rivalry with Lion City FC in Division 1.

Following the national team's matches against Evinea in the South Pacific Cup many years ago, the Portland Pirates were able to acquire the services of the, then young, Evinean forward Raphael Kwaku — and he has become somewhat of a club legend, and a talisman striker in Dantopia's top-flight. Just last season, Kwaku broke the individual scoring record — with 36 league goals — as his side also broke the team scoring record, netting 106 and also boasted the best defence in the league. However, it was — unfortunately — somehow not enough to claim the league title off Lion City FC, who won it on the final match-day, sinking the hearts of many Portland Pirates fans. Still, the 'All-blacks' — named so for their all black kits — have won Division 1 twice, and remain strong contenders this year as well.

The Pirates play their home games at the DT Centre in downtown Portland. The venue first opened over forty years ago but was extensively renovated fourteen years ago — the centrepiece of which was replacing the inflatable roof with a retractable roof, supported by cables. The stadium is owned and operated by the City of Portland which leases it out to the Pirates. Fans of the Pirates are some of the rowdiest and loudest in all of Dantopia, and frequently pack out the DT Centre when the team are playing at home. Former team captain, now manager, Geoff Hendrickson had a blistering start to his coaching career, winning the title in his first season, and then again in his third. Right now, he is focussed on keeping up with an increasingly dominant Lion City FC, providing some of the only true competition to the Royals the league has offered in a few years.

Last Season:
Division 1 — 11th, 8 W; 7 D; 18 L; 25 GF; 52 GA; −27 GD
DFA Cup — Preliminary Round

Club Synopsis:
The Rockport Ravens hail from the north-east corner of the main island of Dantopia. The relatively small city of Rockport was established on the northern, leeward coast because of its excellent natural harbour, and soon thriving fishing and ship building industries took root in the area. To this day, the city of Rockport maintains a strong bond with its maritime heritage. The Ravens used to be called the Rockport Rovers, but recent investment from Black Raven Technologies — a Chromatik company — has seen a rebrand and revitalising of the club.

The newly developed BRT stadium has just opened this year. The new ground is located at the centre of the mixed-use Columbia Park development adjacent to the downtown district. Noise in the arena can potentially reach deafening levels thanks to the spirited support from the Rockport Ravens' fans. The ground is one of the smallest in the top-flight but the city of Rockport is a relatively small city, and the fan-base is not all that large. Still, the ground is regularly filled to capacity on match-days, such is the fierce support of local fans.

Despite their small stature, the Ravens have perhaps overachieved in relation to their size as a club — with a rich history of developing local youth talent firmly on the agenda. Rockport's most famous academy success story was none other than Ezra Cunningham — a star midfielder for the Dantopian national team, and currently playing overseas in Valanora for Club ESF. His younger brother Nehemiah is still on the books for the Ravens, and he is a key player in the squad. 'The Stripes', as they are known, have a number of players entering their thirties, including team captain Sam Bradman. The Saint Eleanor defender has been a stalwart for Rockport over the years, and has also been a successful entrepreneur in his off-time — He has established a national chain of ice-cream parlours called 'Gelatogol', which does very well across all of Dantopia, owing to the island nation's idilic, tropical climate, and abundance of tourists.

The Ravens don't share the city of Rockport with another club, but do contest derbies with neighbouring teams - with the second division Torrance Titans being perhaps their biggest rival. Other rivalries include those against teams from the east coast - including against fellow top-flight side, the Waiakea Warriors. Due to the remoteness of Rockport from other major hubs like Portland, Dartford and Lion City, the nearest major city of Waiakea has often served as a cultural rival to the small city of Rockport. As such, matches against the Warriors — and second division East Bay United — can sometimes get quite heated.

Last Season:
Division 2 — 1st
DFA Cup — Round of 16

Club Synopsis:
The Shoreline Sharks come from the city of Shoreline — a coastal beach town just a short distance east, down the coast from the capital of Lion City. Shoreline neighbours the other coastal resort hub of Oceanside, both prime locations for Dantopia's thriving tourism industry. Cruise ships routinely chart up and down the horizon, bringing visitors from all over the world to Dantopia's renowned beaches. Neither Shoreline nor Oceanside are huge cities — in fact, they are relatively small, but a fierce rivalry has developed between the two, all over who has the better beaches and tourist traps. Therefore, the Sharks maintain a sense of hostility towards the neighbouring Oceanside Eleven — currently playing in Division 2.

'The Cruisers' are not far removed from Division 2 themselves, having been promoted for the first time to the top-flight at the end of last season. It is going to be an uphill battle to establish a foothold in the league, but a mixture of veterans and young talent interspersed in their squad gives the fans hope that they can stave off the threat of relegation. The Sharks play their home games at Shoreline Municipal Arena, located in the heart of Shoreline's downtown. It's not the largest stadium, but it's an attractive ground, that lets in plenty of light on a match-day to keep fans' prospects cheery and sunny.

Manager Anthony Fernfield brings with him a wealth of experience in the second tier of Dantopian football — he has bounced around a number of clubs down there over the years. However, his first promotion to Division 1 is sure to be a test for him. Trying to set up his side so they don't ship bags of goals to the contending teams will require resoluteness from his centre-back pairing; the strong and experienced Joe Vunipola; and the still rather raw, but promising, Tyson Taylor. Aged just 17 last season — 18 now, Taylor fought his way into Fernfield's defensive line in a tricky and physically demanding Division 2 season. His emergence has been a bright spark for the club, not known for producing local talent, but potentially succeeding in this instance. The question will be how long the Sharks can hold onto the precocious defender.

Last Season:
Division 1 — 10th, 9 W; 9 D; 20 L; 50 GF; 76 GA; −26 GD
DFA Cup — Round of 16

Club Synopsis:
Team Valiant survived the drop this time, and live to fight on as a Division 1 side once again. Their previous attempt following promotion in season VII proved unsuccessful, but key investment from billionaire internet tycoon Maximilian Prosper means that 'the Villains' — as they were formerly the Venice Villains before Prosper's take-over — will be looking to build upon their 10th placed finish last year and establish themselves as a Division 1 regular. The spirited and well meaning, though perhaps, excessive enthusiasm of Prosper can irk opposition fans and football pundits alike. His initial fortune was made off the back of various dot-com bubble ventures, and now his investment portfolio is extensively diversified. He has established 'Team Valiant' as his multi-sport brand, and it competes on a variety of fronts, though football remains Prosper's chief obsession.

Offering a stark contrast to the team owner's exuberant nature, manager Otis Glazier is a calm and collected individual, who thinks very hard before he speaks. His careful management of the side in last season's campaign kept them alive, and now with some further re-enforcements, he will be looking to take the next steps with his squad. Out of favour at the Portland Pirates, winger Kai Gilchrist will be looking to re-energise his career in Venice and bolster Glazier's front line. Teenage starlet Bradley Bing has lots of potential — the son of former Dantopian national team defender Tyrell Bing. He isn't a no-nonsense centre-half like his father, but instead a forward-thinking number 8 who combines a good frame with excellent technical ability. He is still just seventeen, however, and certainly will need to add further muscle to his frame in order to compete amongst the men in Division 1.

Team Valiant play at the Valiant Dome which is just on the outskirts of Venice, not too far from the WGP track. They enjoy local rivalries with; Halifax Athletic — who are just south of them; the Kailua Kraken — who are just up the coast; and the Torrance Titans — who are further up still. Due to their owner's vibrant personality, however — and even sometimes impulsive comments, matches against the traditional powerhouses of Lion City FC; the Portland Pirates; the Grenadiers; etc. will very likely prove feisty affairs.

Last Season:
Division 1 — 4th, 15 W; 14 D; 9 L; 67 GF; 50 GA; +17 GD
DFA Cup — Round of 16

Club Synopsis:
The Waiakea Warriors are starting to emerge as one of Dantopia's top clubs. Following promotion for the start of season III, 'the Dubs' have remained in the top-flight and built on their success bit by bit. Under the tutelage of current Macronesian head coach Mitcher Johnny, the side has focussed on developing youth talent — either local, like in the case of forward Zeke Edwards, or poached from other clubs, such as with Omari Opetaia from the Dartford Oilers. This means the squad has a slightly lower average age, and is well positioned to compete in Division 1 for years to come.

The Warriors play at the 90,024 seat Kava Bowl — an absolutely gargantuan stadium, one currently too large for the club. However, attendance at matches is increasing year on year, as the Warriors slowly establish themselves as the premier eastern Dantopian club. Their across-the-bay rivals, East Bay United, have slumped down to Division 2 after reluctantly relinquishing their own academy prospects — now stars — to other clubs. This is a mistake the Warriors do not want to make themselves, and cash flow isn't a problem for the well-financed club. 'The Dubs' also enjoy spirited rivalries with the Chester Chiefs and Rockport Rovers — all three of the sides would like to assert themselves as the top dog in the east.

The midfield duo of Jordan Stone and Omari Opetaia are now entering their primes, and are ready to propel the Warriors side forward with better and better league finishes. Both players are true box-to-box eights, capable of both carrying the ball and distributing it. Up front, the extremely promising — and tall — Zeke Edwards towers over opposition defenders. His goalscoring record has steadily improved year after year, and he will very likely be one of Division 1's elite target men going forward. Due to Lion City FC forward Bradini Brunson also playing in his position, however, Edwards is seeing limited game time with the national team. Sam Robinson-Tate is another Waiakea-born academy talent, and looks to be a bit of a jack of all trades at the back. Both will be pivotal to the success of the Warriors in the next few years.
