Newplym -- Bockerleigh
Bockerleigh is a sport in the spirit of other creative, variable, and yet easily understood Scottish sports developments including tossing the caber, weight over bar, and golf. In bockerleigh, individuals or teams of individuals run from a starting point to a designated stop point, where they load weights or objects such as blocks of wood or bags of grain into a backpack or rucksack, and then carry them back to the starting point, where the competitor unloads the bag and then runs to get more. The course can vary in length from 50 yards/meters for children, to up to a mile each way over varying terrain. In traditional bockerleigh, there is an equal pile of weights for each runner or team, and the winner is the person or team who brings the entire pile to the starting point first, and competition classes are based on pile weight, from 20 lb for children to 500 pounds or more for professionals. In modern bockerleigh, the competition can be based on time, with the piles continually refilled, and the individual or team who delivers the most in a given period of time wins. Short races could be 10-minute promotional activities, standard timed races can run for an hour, while real endurance events can go for 4 hours or more. During longer events, it is recommended that the course be roughly C-shaped, to allow for easier transfer of weight from drop-off to pick-up location.
