QUARTER FINALS: DAY 35
The world was invited to another spectacular Coupe du monde rematch today at the Estádio Missionário in Porto Sotiri as the Asterian Federative Republic and the Île d'Émeraude faced off for the second time in the coupe. Tensions were high, passion was prevalent and dreams were both made and shattered on the pitch of the Missionário, were a coincidental series of spectacular matches, bloodbaths and routs have occurred this year.
The last time both of these teams had played each other, the Emeraudians forced the AFR to a draw - widely lauded as a victory on their part. And for much of this game it appeared as if a similar situation was brewing. Though the AFR was the first to score, a 36th minute tap in from Vaz following a beautiful set up from Moreira, the Black Renegades were not making it easy on Os Abutres. It took until the second half for this to come to fruition, however, as Metellus volleyed a long-ball from captain Fenelon straight past an unprepared Texeira in one of the few instances the Asterian goalie has been completely blindsided in these games.
Intense football led to numerous attempts on goal by both sides, showing the spirit of the Asterian attack and the determination of the Emeraudian forwards up against the strongest defensive lineup in the CDM. As a result, the teams went into AET - where the Black Renegades shocked the world with a stunning 8 second goal into the start of the first half of extra time, with Metellus being passed the ball by Rene to completely overrun the entire defence of Os Abutres and score a screamer in the back of the neck between Texeira's attempt to grab it. Things were looking bleak for the AFR, though Camara committed to his formation. Both sides played fairly rigidly aside from a handful of substitutions on either side.
Eutímio was able to bring the ball dangerously close to the Emeraudian goal in the 117th minute, but a save from Pascal granted the AFR a much needed corner. Leitão, who had been subbed on for Moreira, took the kick, and allowed a beautiful header from Balbinho to go in to equalise the game.
Penalties were required, and following five shots a piece to each team, it was Saraiva who was able to score his monstrous 6th penalty against a bewildered Pascal that Ernst Rene was unable to replicate as Texeira saved his first and only penalty of the shootout.
