OOC - this is obviously an IC post only, and doesn't reflect my RL opinions. Most of you should be able to work out what I'm doing after this RP; I hope. And that formatting in that last paragraph was more work than I was expecting

A STATEMENT FROM THE HOLY EMPIRE FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION

The Holy Empire Football Association would like to apologise for our previous statement over World Cup 94 qualification and the status of the Cup of Harmony. Those responsible were clearly in denial over recent events, and have been removed from engagement with World Cup Committee-run events until they have completed a training course in Mundy Relations.

Denial is an unhealthy emotion in these circumstances, and not one we would want to be seen to encourage. We didn't win five World Cups and set a record for the most consecutive World Cup qualifications by denying basic facts and refusing to accept plain and obvious circumstances. We would like to reassure other participants in the Cup of Harmony that not all HEFA officials are similarly in denial. No, after watching our side's 4-2 demolition of Krytenia last night, we're FUCKING ANGRY.

WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK? Why on earth couldn't we fucking play like that on the last day of qualification? We were topping the fucking group with just one match left. A draw... a stupid fucking draw against a bunch of fucking no-hopers from Baggieland would have been fucking enough to see us through. And even without that draw, even if we fucking did have to go ahead and fucking lose 3-2 at home, to get knocked out without even making the fucking playoffs required a fucking outlandish sequence of wins from all three of fucking Yuezhou, fucking Pemecutan, and fucking Elmyia, with fucking Yuezhou and fucking Elymia also having to fucking overcome our fucking superior goal difference. Just how fucking unlikely is that fucking scenario? What a bunch of fucking fuckwits; they can all go get fucked.

Admit it, you're only trying to work out the formatting of this final paragraph to see if we've written 'fuck' as much as we did in the previous paragraph. Well, we're not going to give you the satisfaction. Instead we're going to fill this final paragraph full of sunshine and daisies and lollypops and happy thoughts. BUT WE'RE STILL REALLY, REALLY ANGRY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sincerely Yours,

The Fucking Holy Empire

"Scorinator's broken"

"What's that?"

"We're not going through this, you already know what it is"

"This isn't a rap song, I don't know"

"Whatever, scorinator's broken"

"Are you sure?"

"Well look at our group"

"What do you mean?"

Matchday 1
Milchama 0–0 Dantopia
Kamijiro 2–2 Acastanha

Matchday 2
Dantopia 2–2 Kamijiro
Ochre Islands 0–0 Milchama

"These are not real results. There is no way that all games had the exact same scores and since we play +3 and are the higher seed, how the hell do we end with two nil nil draws. Scorinator's broken"

"Or we just didn't play well"

"Then explain the symmetry"

"The universe works in mysterious ways, stranger things have happened"

"Scorinator's broken"

"That is absolutely one possibility"

"Ok as long you agree that it's a possibility"

"That's all you wanted?!"

"Well the scorinator's broken, what did you expect?"

"I expected some more argument"

"Why?"

"Because what else do we do in these besides argue"

"Discuss meta commentary, break the 4th wall, talk about large scale narrative with no specifics for the specific matches"

"So then what are we doing now?'

"Meta commentary and large scale narratives while breaking the 4th wall"

"Also arguing!"

"Fair enough"

"So then we've accomplished everything we've set out to do"

"If what we've set out to do was create a generic Milchama RP"

"I mean what else would we be doing?"

"Fair enough"

"So we're good"

"Exactly"

"Perfect"

"Scorinator's still broken"

Headlines Around Cardenao

Cardenao Takes On The Cup Of Harmony

Hello my friends, hello my dear readers. It is unfortunate to be writing to you from here, the Cup of Harmony, and not be sitting at the adult table, but I write to you with the same level of passion and love and loving passion that I feel for the Cardenao…National…Football…Team. What a group of lads, what a group of soldiers. Those who take to the field of most honorable combat in order to do battle to protect our nation’s dignity deserve our upmost respect. Unless they have a bad game, of course. The Cup of Harmony! No, it’s not the World Cup, but I would rather win the Cup of Harmony than be a nameless nobody in the World Cup itself, which would be anyone other than the winner. Well…I wouldn’t mind seeing Cardenao be a runner up…or third…or fourth or even reaching the quarterfinals……or shoot, I think I would rather reach the Round of 16 instead of winning the Cup of Harmony. No, no that’s too far. It’d have to be quarterfinals or winning the CoH for me but while we’re a long way from that point, it is very fun to consider! Let’s examine our reality.

The reality is our boys in Blue and Gold had a bye week for the first match day and put that time in on the training pitch as they showed up against República Guanacasteca with a point to make. Somewhat disappointingly that point was not a 4-0 smashing, but a very patient and controlling 1-0 win. Ramon Lamberti, by the way what a promising start to his tenure as the national team manager bringing us to the World Cup playoffs for the first time, sent out an unchanged squad from the World Qualifiers and let them go to work. The first half was a very alert and attentive affair from both squads, with trips into the opposing half being both curious and cautious as the teams tried to gain control of the situation. The half ended 0-0 as fans went from raving and reveling in the excitement of football to the reality of international competition, a somewhat boring slough of boring through the opponents defense to expose the opportunity, the one chance you need, [i]the pass from Haritz Larrainzar’s outreached right boot to poke the ball past the defensive line to Juanma Saez for him to casually slide pass the keeper into the net, los dos leones combining once again to bring the three points to Cardenao. With the match finishing 1-0 in our favor, it puts Cardenao in an interesting spot heading into the next round of fixtures.

While others have played two matches, we’ve played once and already sit in second, with three whole points! Wow, what a strong position to be! Sike, this is international football, get real kid. Who the hell cares when you’ve got Cabo Azure on the horizon, yes we face off against the 22nd ranked team in the multiverse in our next match. These lads are next up on our schedule and a win here would be so massive it’s hard to put into words. Sure, we’d still have a long way to securing a path to qualification but beating the best team in the group can only be a good thing. Then we can bring that momentum into our next match when we host Aeragny at home. After losing 2-0 to Cabo Azure, they will surely be looking to put some points on the board and the 61st ranked team will be gunning to give us a run for our money, but if we hold the line, if the lads push hard and press harder, give us those three points yes sir! If we can take nine points out of our first nine, that puts us in a pretty good position!

My dear readers, my friends, we are on the brink of something special happening! Or not. But if we are, then this is the moment where Cardenao pushes on. Haritz Larrainzar has been inspirational at center midfield, Juanma Saez has reminded everyone why he owns the Tikariot Premier League, Chímo Ventura has seemingly given up his ego to help the team succeed, our defensive line is strong and stalwart, standing against all challengers. This is their moment, their chance. It is up to them and the randomness of sport to determine their future.

By the Gods I hope they win.

Cardenaoan-Banijan-Quebecois Aloshaki Alliance?

After several weeks which felt like days but could also be months, the Triple Threat military exercise on Isla Aloshaki is officially over. The combined forces of Cardenao, The Kingdom of Quebec and Shingoryeo, and the The Kingdom of Banija, have blasted the shit out of paper targets all across the island and have completely laid claim to the formerly deserted island. What happens next isn’t entirely clear, but judging by the aircraft carrier gifted from Quebec to Cardenao sailing into Discovery Bay and the increasing spotting of high ranking officials from all sides, it seems likely that a formal alliance agreement from the three nations will be coming soon.

Such an alliance will be sure to affect Anaian workings to some degree or another. For Banija, it represents another concrete step into Anaia in a degree of foreign intervention that will, for some, be reminiscent of Eshan expansionism and a recommitment to the special relationship that exists between the Banijans and Cardenao. For The Kingdom of Quebec and Singoryeo, it was an evolution on the current existing Mutual Defense and Optional Aggression Pact with our most glorious nation. From the Quebecois, the gift of a nuclear powered aircraft carrier. From the Banijans? While nothing concrete as of yet, there are very promising rumors of a revolutionary military technology production agreement between the two nations. Furthermore, we can confirm an increase in high ranking military officials, as well as an influx in construction personnel to staging points all across Discovery Bay, seemingly on their way to build some sort of mega military facility……but who’s to say! I don’t know, maybe those know it alls at Koroa City?

Speaking of that whole thing, what’s going on over there? Well preliminary talk is understandably shrouded in some sense of secrecy, but it seems Mihaly (when’s the last time we called him President come on now) is positioning Cardenao at the center of several prospective treaties. Contemplating those, it makes one wonder what an ideal outcome here would be? A treaty with Ocean of Ayes nations could certainly be ideal, as would any sort of agreement with…well any Anaian nation! Word out of the Foreign Development Office is that Cardenao just wants to be friends and this Koroa City summit is a great first step to that. It remains to be seen what exactly comes out of it, but things seem positive so far.

Go Cardenao!

Fantastic Start for Archalit's CoH Run!
Archalit 1 - 0 Cap Nord
(ARC) Harmonia 79'

Up against Cap Nord, the Pirates were prepared to fight. This team is about as fresh to the face of international sporting as Archalit, having started playing just one cycle prior in BoF 79. Similar to us, they found a medal as newbies, taking an overall bronze. We were basically staring at a mirror of ourselves, but with more experience and better results (as is indicated by their higher national ranking). We were fighting an uphill battle, and against an aggressive team like the Capnordics, how were we gonna beat them?

That's a dumb question seeing as we beat Valanora in the same World Cup cycle. We may be fresher to the international stage, but that does not mean we're any worse. It was pretty obvious from the onset of the first half that the team was playing slow and careful, making use of careful defense in favor of the blazing offense that scored a lot of points but still folded under Chromatika. As a result, the first half was pretty slow. The Pirates made sure the Capnordic were getting as few opportunities as possible, and as a matter of fact, the only shots our opponents took were off-target. Now, while our defense was working double-time, we weren't getting many offensive opportunities ourselves. A lot of short passing and careful dribbling left much to be desired in our aggression, and this continued until the opening half ended 0-0.

While the second half stayed about the same in terms of aggression, the general feeling was that the offense was pushing slightly higher on the field. In fact, Lyndon Nightmare scored in the 63rd only to be called offside. Still, our defense persevered until the front got an opportunity, and a precise corner kick from August Armburst flew straight towards Cynthia Harmonia who excellently finished the play past Capnordic goalkeeper Johannes Marzinn. For the remaining time, Archalit played into it's strong defense, and held onto the 1-0 lead by full-time to secure the victory.

This placed the team in second, trailing the hosts Poafmersia by goal difference. Speaking of, they're our next match, and they're terrifying.

Facing the Hosts?
Archalit 0 - 0 Poafmersia

So, the significance obviously lies in the fact that they're the home team. They get that sweet privilege of playing in a stadium they've been in before, and getting a crowd of spectators that know and love them moreso than any other team in groups D through F. Thus, while Poafmersia is behind Cap Nord by ranking placement, they're still much more of a threat. So you can imagine how carefully the team had to plan to ensure they got points out of it.

It's pretty obvious they had to play slowly, but Archalit put it all into the defense, and the players were prioritizing keep away over goalscoring. This left, with few exceptions, basically no shots for Archalit in the first half. A couple went well off-target, but it really wasn't anything that particularly troubled their goalkeeper. On the other hand, Poafmersia got a good few chances, but some great saves by Roland Baker in the first half meant that the game was tied 0-0.

The second half was no different. Archalit got one chance in the form of Eloria Mizuki, but an excellent save by goalkeeper Nicole Potts diminished our one shot to take the advantage. Once again, Poafmersia was getting more shots in, but they still weren't quite finding the net and, by full-time, the game really ended 0-0. A frustrating one for Poafmersian spectators, and a dull one for Archalitians.

Still, a draw's a draw, and this was a good outcome for the Pirates. They left this match with an extra point and a comfortable spot in second place which, remember, is guaranteed a spot in the knockout stage. That's not to ignore our remaining opponents, however, which include Sargossa and United Hawkland. There's a reason these teams were invited to the Cup of Harmony, and there's certainly a good chance they'll prove it against us. But, in the spirit of believing they won't,

Bedminster Community Hall, Bedminster, Grand Ochre Island

Over 19 years, Community Hall had been where the townsfolk of Hannston had come together to celebrate harvest, independence, birthdays and weddings year-in and year-out since it was built in 2247. 18 happy years of independence were all but memories now that Community Hall was being used by the occupying Bostopian forces as a courthouse.

On the stage at the far end of the hall, a podium had been set up where the townsfolk had once performed plays. Unfortunately though, rather than plays, this was all very real. There were three men on the stage - one behind the podium, well dressed with the familiar full dress wig and gown often seen in Bostopian courts. The other two were soldiers in fatigues and a beret, holding their standard-issue submachine guns across their chest. Two more stood either side of the emergency exit to the right of the stage and there were four more at the entrance to the hall, two on each side of the door. Other than this, there was a typist off to one side of the room, recording the proceedings as they happened.

The entrance door swung open and an Ochre Islander was walked into the room by two further Bostopian soldiers, who held their prisoner roughly by each arm. As they reached the podium, a shot rang out from behind the hall. No-one but the prisoner flinched, who also ducked for good measure.

As he reached the stage he was held in place and the judge looked down at him, before speaking in a thick old-Bostopian accent. 'State your name. place of birth and year of birth.'

'I am Richard Farrers' the prisoner replied nervously. 'I was born in Joaling, Fenton State, in the year 2215.' The Judge looked down at his paperwork for a moment. 'Farrers, I have evidence here that you hold a political position on these islands. Is that true?' 'Yes it is.' 'And that position is..?' Farrers tried to moisten a damp mouth but failed, so had to answer as he was. 'I am the Mayor of this community, Hannston.'

'Farrers, you were born in Bostopia and are therefore a Bostopian citizen. You now hold a political position in a state which has declared independence from the Bostopian nation. Is that correct?' 'That is correct' Farrers replied, knowing this was nothing more than a show, a grand political show, with a typist tapping away all his answers as if this would legitimise it. 'The Bostopian Government and her Emperor hold that this state has and remains illegally seceded from the Bostopian Empire. Therefore you are charged with; and through your verbal evidence found guilty of treason against the Bostopian nation and her people. Bostopian law, now rightlyfully restored to this island, holds the penalty for treason is death.' A silence fell across the mock courtroom that was getting more and more familiar to those inside who hadn't been on the Ochre Islands more than a few hours. It was broken by the judge, simply saying 'Take the traitor out of my courtroom, guards.'

The doors which were once the emergency exit were pushed open by the guards, which let in the heat of the Ochre afternoon into the room, and the prisoner was dragged out, lost in his own thoughts, before the doors slammed shut.

The entrance door swung open and another Ochre Islander was walked into the room by two different Bostopian soldiers, who held their prisoner roughly by each arm. As they reached the podium, a shot rang out from behind the hall. No-one but the prisoner flinched.

Greetings, compatriots!
It’s TTV with a news from Huayramarca, where our football national team played games of CoH.
Under quite a loud noise about dubious refereeing and other weird difficulties from several nations at once, the cycle of the World Cup-94 is drawing to a close. Although we also have something to add to this chorus, but nevertheless in a difficult struggle, overcoming all the obstacles thrown by fate in its path, our national team in its new lineup finished third in its group, and this is its best finish in three seasons. And, even more than that, our players could count on more, if not for the strange and surprising losses of points during the tournament. Again, there was a strange trend of failures at home, and now the football federation is discussing the issue of holding team matches outside the capital next year. Of course we will lose attendance as Trolleborg does not have a stadium of comparable capacity, but it is better than losing points due to some unrecognized factor that has been in place for some time in the December 1st Stadium, with each of such setbacks cost team almost a three to five months of hard work.

Our players have received an invitation to CoH, and as group members we have almost all old acquaintances. Let's look at them in alphabetical order. Brenecia, who finished sixth in her group, and at the same time, only one point from third place, is perhaps the most dangerous-looking opponent, especially since all our games with them ended in the defeat of our team. Brusseldorf, who was seventh in his group, met with our team at its very first Harmony Cup, and then bypassed it at the last moment, snatching victory in the last round. In the last qualifying tournament for the World Cup, we met again and equalized the score of victories. Let's see how it goes. In addition, we have as opponents Koronavia, which we had previously dealt with at the Tea Cup and celebrated a confident victory, which came to the finish line fourth, with a two-point behind third place. Rounding out the lineup is Stevencousin, who is fifth in Group 1. We dealt with this country only at the club level - Finn Hurps won two duels with teams of that country in last year's Confederations Cup. It is noteworthy that all four opponents did not make the playoffs, only we are, and this is simply strange. But it is worth noting that this does not mean anything, all opponents are skillful and hard opponents, and as a whole it’s rather formidable line of opposition for our lads. However, there is still hope that the failures of the last cycle have made it possible to learn some important lessons, and the lineup of the team and its game look completely different than at first. It is possible that the completion of the national championship will make it also possible to further strengthen the team with one or two players who will show themselves properly – after all, in such a situation as we have in the league before the last round, it is the right balance of skill and composure that decides a lot.

The VFA offices had been alive with anticipation ahead of the Cup of Harmony. Sure, the qualification campaign had ended about as badly as any could, but it had been a better showing than anyone has had the nerve to expect from Miroshnichenko and the Terns, and hopes were high ahead of the Cup of Harmony that another set of above average results could propel the national side into the knockout stages. Brenecia, Eura, Saint Eleanor, Cap Nord. The list of top teams that the Terns had raised their game to beat during the campaign was a long one. A couple of results against so called 'weaker' opposition had done the damage before Saint Eleanor inflicted the killer blow in the last match, so with a tournament full of stronger teams and no weaker teams to embarrass them, there was a quiet anticipation that perhaps the Terns could be that banana skin for everyone else.

The reality was already very different, and after one point from two games, it was looking like another early exist from a tournament before the knockout stages. The buzz was slowly evaporating, and as assistant data analyst Brun Vaxholm took her seat in her workroom for another day's work, she noticed nobody was hanging around the corridors in excitement already. The Terns were playing Aeragny that evening, but it would seem that there was no appetite for the occasion. Not even within the walls of the VFA.

"Quiet, today," she remarked to a colleague.

"Like the Copa all over again," sniffed Sven, her direct line manager, pausing his footage of a Divisjon Two game to answer her, "once the sheen wears off people stop caring."

"Right but, we can still qualify, can't we?"

"Technically. I don't think anyone's holding out much hope though."

"Shame. I'm clocking off early for it whatever the chances."

"You bloody aren't," said Sven, nodding at the pile of memory sticks next to him on the table, "we've got a whole half season of u21 potential loaners in Div two to get through by the end of the week."

"It's the Terns, Sven! You're telling me the VFA, the actual VFA doesn't allow its employees to watch the Terns in action during an international tournament?"

Her line manager looked at her, thought about arguing, and then paused as if remembering in real time how much he wanted an easy life going forwards. "Fine, but don't come in tomorrow all miserable if we lose. Which we will."

"Well..."

"Miroshnichenko hasn't got a clue."

"That's a bit harsh, Sven, I-"

"No, it isn't," interrupted Sven, "sooner we ditch him and just go with Aalto the better..."

Across the capital, in the basement of the Ensign Tower, another data analyst of sorts was doing his own clocking in the for the day, wondering what list of sources he'd have to work through. Clicking on his desktop, he noticed a nice new email alert at the top of his in tray.

'Miroshnichenko. Sack (or similar). Source: VFA OFFICES.'

He clicked and sifted through the sound clips. Another one for the pile...

Folks, in the last two games, it was evident that we lacked the necessary edge. Instead of taking opportunities, we hesitated and made costly mistakes. It's frustrating to see our potential squandered due to poor decision making and lackluster execution. Our opponents are not invincible and you know it, but we're making them look like world beaters while making us look like a bunch of victims with our lack of intensity and discipline. We can't keep patting ourselves on the back for just trying hard and accepting defeats as if they're a victory. We're better than that. This is not the time to sugarcoat things or make excuses. It's time to step up and take responsibility for our shortcomings. Each one of us needs to put in the extra effort on and off the field. We should be training harder, analyzing our opponents more thoroughly, and working on improving our individual skills. As a team, we need to build a strong sense of unity and trust among ourselves, I know that on the club level you all compete against eachother but here I want you to play like you have been playing toghether since childhood. Finger-pointing and blaming others won't get us anywhere. We must communicate better on the field, support each other, and play with a collective purpose. We have the potential to be a force to be reckoned with, but potential alone won't win us matches. We need to earn respect through our actions and results. It's time to stop making excuses and start demanding more from ourselves. Tomorrow I want to see you guys giving one hundred and ten percent in training, do I make myself clear? Said Berezucki to his players after a loss to Krytenia.

To Write a Wrong

Location: The office of the Airannian tourism board, VisitAerá; Court de Romarin 6, Murs Blancs, Duxembois. An unimpressive building with brick walls, four stories tall, situated in the Murs Blancs neighbourhood, between the river Rell and the Parzhinian enclave of Tyl-Étrenn.
Present:.
  • Mádhilda Bégneco: Head of the Dichaum Jalliéc-Quilly (Dichaum JQ), Airannia's primary language organization; overseeing the usage, change and modernization of language in all of Airannia, across all languages. While her methods might appear peculiar, she's shown through the years to be extremely effective at exacting eccentric explorations into the epic world of expressions.
  • Élodie Hriniem: Board member of the organization for touristic stimulation: VisitAerá. As board member, she's supposed to be in charge of the outreach of this organization, but in reality, she was born into an aristocratically gifted family, and finds herself in this job not so much on merit of her skills as an outreacher, but rather the outreach of her influential father when it comes to providing a well-paying government job for his daughter. Level-headed, sure, but overall, a corrupt appointment for a position she's not equipped to handle. Not that being in charge of anything requires all that much skill, of course. Her job, even when performed well, should consist mostly of delegation and oversight. Anyone can do this job.
  • Kito Stéfnigny: Head of the Vic-Dectau Ancher Aeráy, the Unified Airannian Sports Organization. His organization is the umbrella organization for all of the Airannian sports organizations, as well as the organizer for any Olympic mission; not an easy task, considering that each of the kingdoms typically has its own sports organization, and getting all the heads pointing in the same direction is damn near impossible. He's seen quite often on Airannian television, typically when there's another quabble between sports organizations to solve; and while he's genuinely a charismatic man, with great talking skills, he's often also seen as precisely one of the reasons why there are quabbles to begin with.

MB: Welcome, all. Kito, this is Élodie, from VisitAerá.
KS: Thank you Mádhilda for inviting us here. Nice to meet you, Élodie.
EH: This is my office.
MB: Yes, it is. Thank you for having us here. Eitherway, Kito, I wasn't able to tell Élodie about what we're doing here on the way over unfortunately. Seems something's gone awry in the telecommunications.
Kito leans back in his chair; in reality this chair clearly belonged to Élodie, though.
KS: Shouldn't take too long to explain, should it?
MB: Not at all.
She turns towards Élodie with her entire body, back facing Kito.

MB: Here's the deal Élodie. At the JQ, we've recently become aware of a frankly ridiculous injustice. As soon as we found out about it, I had to immediately contact Kito's secretary to confirm whether or not it was true, and in honesty, I'm still in shock that we didn't find out any sooner.
Kito scoffs. It clearly wasn't his fault.
MB: You see, Élodie, what if I told you, there's a terrible, horrible incorrectcy in the way that our beautiful country is viewed by the international audiences?
EH: Okay so, first of all, incorrectcy is just not a word. Secondly, can you cut to the chase already? It's not like this is some TV show that relies on cliffhangers every fifteen minutes to keep their audience engaged through the commercial break. Though I am mighty suspicious as to why this entire thing is written kind of like a script of sorts.
MB: Very well. I'll have Maryanna write incorrectcy into the next edition of our dictionary. No problems on my end. Eitherway, the problem is the Aaahh!.
Élodie looks around, looking for whatever it was that caused the otherwise prim and proper lady to suddenly scream out.

MB: Aaaah!
KS: Aaaa!!!!

Bewildered, Élodie is now faced with two high-ranking officials of government bodies, who are seemingly screaming at nothing. Despite their loud protesting, though, the two seem to have kept a perfectly fine composure, looking straight ahead with an emotionless, desinterested face. There was really only one thing for Élodie to do in order to not stand out:
EH: Aahh!!?
MB: Yes! Exactly! You get it. The Aa! Or rather, the á, a-accent. One of Airannia's true greatest exports, wouldn't you agree, Kito?
KS: I have no idea.
MB: Hmph. Eitherway, there's a serious threat to our wonderful Airannian á. You see, in the international sports scene, it's become increasingly common for Airannia, Aerágny, our nation, to be referred to as Aeragny. The horror!
Élodie is getting simultaneously more curious and more worried as to how Mádhilda is able to pronounce the á in blue.
MB: When I found out, I immediately asked Kito what had happened. And what did you tell me, Kito?
KS: It's very simple. When we enrolled Airannia into the multiversal sporting scene, our IT department had apparently used a sub-par encoding. At least, by multiversal standards. Simply put, the beautiful accent on our country's á was lost in the cybernetic transfer; and the á was replaced with an a. Sure, a completely different letter by Airannian standards, but on the large scale of things, it would appear that these letters are considered virtually identical abroad.
EH, under her breath: Curse those uncultured bastards. Unable to understand the finer linings of linguistic beauty...
MB: And so, now, whenever the Airannian team plays, the enemies are facing against "Aeragny". Who are that? Kito ensured me that, despite the name being wholly different, it's still the same players, right?
Kito nods.
MB: It's ridiculous! This cannot look good for our nation. What if the foreigners associate us with hragné? [editor's note: hragné means to drop, let fall]
Élodie made an internal nod to discreetly inform the Dichaum JQ some time after this meeting that Aeránanue isn't spoken elsewhere in the world.

KS: Well, I wouldn't want foreigners to associate our shameful 0-2 defeat against Cabo Azure with Aerágny anyway! But, it does seem only fair that Aerágny also get the glorious 3rd place in BoF 80 association, doesn't it? That's gotta be good for tourism business.
MB: So that brings us to why you're here, Élodie. We need to field a campaign that proves to the world that it's spelled Aerágny! Not to believe the lies that Big Sports keep telling them, with this "Aeragny" bullshit. Make the a an á again, dangit!
EH: Uh.. sure? Isn't it much easier to just change the records? Insert the a-accent so it doesn't get spelled wrong in the future? I don't think the mere past three years have left such an irrepairable impression on the overall audience that we need a whole campaign.
Mádhilda and Kito exchange a glance, dripping with shame and mutual understanding of their mistake. An extended silence follows.
KS: Yeah, that makes sense, to be honest. Do you know how we go about this?
Somehow, it wasn't until that point in time Élodie realized that, despite being a poorly educated daughter of a rich man, she was the most capable adult present in the room. Sighing, she walked to her computer, and begun to look into this whole "multiversal sports scene" she had never heard anything about before.

A footnote about the Airannian á.
In Aeránanue, the language most commonly spoken in Airannia, and the origin language of 'Aerágny', the difference between the á and a is, frankly, very minute.
The letter a is pronounced as /ɑ/ in most instances. However, if the a is followed by a single consonant, and then a vowel, it is "lengthened", and thus pronounced as /a/, or /a:/.
The letter á is pronoucned as /a:/, always. Additionally, the presence of the letter á will automatically pull the stress of a word into that syllable.
While certainly different in some cases, the usage of the letter a versus the letter á is in many cases purely down to pedantic spelling rules, as propagated and stimulated by the Dichaum JQ.

Brusseldorf 2–1 Stevencousin
July 30th
Estadio Provincial de Nauta, Huayramarca

After a bye in round one, Brusseldorf kicked off their Cup of Harmony campaign with a respectable 2-1 win over recent WCQ Group 1 rivals Stevencousin. In that campaign the spoils were shared, with Los Alrededores winning 4-2 in the first encounter, and Stevencousin winning the reverse fixture 3–2. With neither team enjoying a home advantage, it was the travelling Brusseldorf fans that buoyed their team to victory last night. Brusseldorf opened their account in the 44th minute, a through ball from new starter Marcev Steyr putting the ball on a silver platter for captain Teddy Wolfenden. Aktha Akiveal placed the ball in the back of the Stevencousin net for a second time in the 70th minute to make it 2-0. Aktha, who proudly transitioned in 2019, is now Brusseldorf's first transgender woman to score in an international match, a historic and inspiring moment for Brusseldorfennin and the Brusseldorfen LGBTIQA+ community in particular. Steven Cheyrou continues to enjoy playing against Brusseldorf, but his effort was in vain this time around, the game ending shortly after his successful strike.

Here's how we rated each individual performance...

Gimenza Azoulay — 7.5
Showed remarkable composure despite limited action in the first half, distributing the ball effectively when called upon. Made a crucial save to deny Stevencousin a legitimate chance in the second half, contributing to the team's victory with a solid performance between the posts.

Boronia — 7
Had a relatively quieter game compared to the left flank, but linked up well with Pickett, Hernández and Al Maghribī, providing support in attack with well-timed runs and passes to advance the play. Maintained defensive solidity, ensuring the opposition had few opportunities down the right wing.

Gabriel Lellouche — 7.5
An instrumental presence in defense, preventing Stevencousin from registering a significant threat until the latter stages of the match. Showcased progressive play from the left-back position, offering vital support to the midfield and contributing to the team's overall balance.

Ricard Sciolan — 7
Demonstrated a sturdy defensive performance, forming a formidable partnership at the heart of the defense. Occasionally held onto the ball for a tad too long but overall contributed to the team's clean sheet.

Andrea Zidane — 8
Complemented her defensive partner with assured passing, thwarting Stevencousin's attempts to penetrate the defense. A reliable presence at the back, ensuring Brusseldorf remained solid and organized throughout the match.

Sarah Pickett — 8
Played a crucial role in the midfield, dictating play with intelligent ball distribution and tenacity in regaining possession. A key factor in controlling the flow of the game and supporting the team's attacking endeavors. Linked up with Salé United teammate Lataste several times in the second half, almost registering an assist for herself with a decisive through ball to the midfielder.

Michael Hernández — 7.5
Instrumental in orchestrating Brusseldorf's attacks, making perfectly-timed runs and providing balls into Stevencousin's box. Displayed exceptional vision and creativity in the final third, setting the tone for the game.

Vindark Al Maghribī — 7
An effective defensive midfielder, contributing to the team's solid high press and preventing Stevencousin from pushing forward. Maintained a disciplined presence in the midfield, ensuring stability and protection for the defense. Eventually substituted for the fresh legs of Dieter Van den Berg, but left his all out on the park.

Teddy Wolfenden — 9
The talismanic forward demonstrated clinical finishing and positioning. Linked up brilliantly with Marcev Steyr, and was a constant threat to the opposition's defense.

Marcev Steyr — 8
Partnered effectively with Wolfenden, exhibited excellent link-up play, and provided the assist for the opening goal. Substituted late for Phil Lataste.

Aktha Akiveal — 8.5
A livewire in attack, showcased versatility and creativity. Capped off a fine performance with a well-taken goal. Eventually made way for Leila Abidi as Brusseldorf locked down the game.

SUBSTITUTES
Phil Lataste — 6.5
Leila Abidi — 6.5
Dieter Van den Berg — 7

The expectations for this event are mixed at best. Akito Miura, the manager, is feeling a bit nervous about the team's chances. The Lightning had a middling appearance in the group stage at the World Cup, but there have been issues on the home front causing issues that have distracted the team. (OOC: I've been dealing with a personal loss and have been offline for a bit) Captain Ryuji Kaminari is trying to rally the troops and they will do their best to put on a good showing for their country despite the loss of a regent at home.

Dantopia's first match in the Cup of Harmony - against Milchama - ended in a goalless draw at the Sporting Dalaris Stadium on Sunday. Neither Harold Northgate's or Darryl Lamarein's sides were able to capitalise on the chances they created, with the former accountant's team ruing their missed opportunities more - given the gulf in quality between Milchama, who are ranked twenty-fourth in the world, and Dantopia, who are ranked just outside the top hundred. Opportunities were not aplenty for the forward quartet of Kouriea, Benbemore, Flok or Interlasskoti, as the Dantopian defenders were well drilled at the back, often reverting to a back five of Bartholomew-Barnham, Runner, Rock, Yesterdi and Shank from right to left. The extra man at the back helped thwart many of the attempts from the Milchamian attackers, but moving men out of the midfield allowed Cal Kamet to dictate much of the game for Milchama.

At the other end of the pitch, the Dantopian forward trio of Michael Danchevy, Manny Moses and Adebayo Adeyemi looked flustered after practically every avenue of attack was prevented by the organised and experienced Milchamian defence. Eric Hexidevorah's marshalling of Danchevy was particularly noteworthy, as whilst the defender wouldn't be able to maintain pace with the Dartford Devils attacker in a footrace, his keen positioning allowed him to anticipate and intercept the Lions forward at every turn. Northgate changed tactics during the second half, opting for the more creative and methodical Fodderingham and Clamber - two number 10s really - on the wings, replacing the underperforming Danchevy and Adeyemi. The Lions were able to get a number of late shots on target against Milchama, but none of the opportunities particularly tested Morc Entersher in net.

It's a quick turnaround for the Lions before they head back to the Sporting Dalaris Stadium to face Kamijiro in the second game of the group stages. Dantopia have played against Kamijiro before in the Baptism of Fire tournament before the recent World Cup Qualifiers, with the Lions coming away with a narrow victory in that game. Since then though the Kamijiroans have impressed on the international stage, winning said Baptism of Fire tournament and finishing sisxth in a fiercely competitive Group 13 during world cup qualifying. Manager Akiro Miura has been nurturing the talent of young starlet Leão on the wing, and has been usually well-serviced by his attacking pair of Ankei Hilario and Rizky Tuasalamony. Not forgetting the star power of midfield maestro Ryuji Kaminari either, the Kamijiro side are filled with capable and tactically astute players, and will provide a tough test for Dantopia to get past.

The Lions had to settle for another draw in the Cup of Harmony, this time against former Baptism of Fire foes Kamijiro. Better attacking displays from the Dantopian forwards was unfortunately equalled by the impressive talent of teenage sensation Leão for the Kamijiroans, as the young winger chipped in with two goals to equal the two scored by Michael Danchevy and Will Fodderingham for the Lions.

The Dantopian team were the first to get on the scoresheet, when Ezra Cunningham was able to drive the ball forwards from midfield, past the Kamijiroan midfielders and defenders, and then slide the ball towards Danchevy for the cool finish. Cunningham has really started to come into his own as a true box-to-box midfielder. The vision and quality he possesses at such a young age is quite remarkable, and he is certainly attracting interest from domestic clubs from all over the world for his services. The young midfielder is out of contract at the end of the summer, and will be available on a free transfer to whomever is his preferred club.

However, the match would prove to be a tale of two teenagers, with Leão getting the better of the tortured Lewis Shank for much of the evening, equalising for the Lightning twelves minutes after Danchevy had put the Dantopians up. Leão's pace and technical abilities proved too much for Shank, who was substituted for Lyle Runner in the sixtieth minute. Runner, playing on the opposite side of the pitch he is used to was able to track Leão better, but even he eventually proved unsuccessful in corralling or confining the young Kamijiroan.

A goal for Will Fodderingham gave the Lions the lead again shortly after Runner was substituted on the pitch, with the assist coming from original goalscorer Michael Danchevy, who's whipped ball across the face of the goal found Fodderingham at the far post. Harold Northgate's men were unable to maintain the lead however, and Leão's second equaliser of the game came off a blocked shot from Hilario. Yesterdi's block fell into the path of Leão, who struck the ball sweetly into the top left hand corner of the goal, past the outstretched arms of Jeffrey Danchevy.

Both sides attempted to go for a last gasp winner, but neither team were able to seize the opportunities presented to them. In fact, the efforts more often serves as goal-kick practice for Jeffrey Danchevy and Jiro Tuasalamony respectively. Following the match manager Harold Northgate was able to give an account of his side to the press, saying "I thought we performed well against both Milchama and Kamijro, but for different reasons. The first game against a very strong Milchamian team, we were defensively excellent, not giving up much at all. However, in attack we faltered, not taking our opportunities when they came to us."

Northgate continued... "Against Kamijiro, we were the opposite. Defensively we were too open in my view, allowing their wingers in particular past us too easily, but we showed more determination in attack, and that resulted in two well taken finishes for us against a good side. We need the best of both worlds going into our next fixtures; defensively solidity; combined with a clinical attacking output. If we can show those two things against Acastanha and Ochre Islands, I think we'll be alright."

The draw matched that of the other games in Group F thus far, so Kamijiro find themselves atop the group on goals for, with Dantopia in second and Milchama in third. All three teams have two points from two games, with Acastanha and Ochre Islands having only a single point, but a game in hand each on the other three nations. It's therefore very much all to play for over the course of the next three match-days, only two of which the Lions will participate in. Harold Northgate's men next face Acastanha at the Dalaris State Stadium on Tuesday evening, and their final match of the group stages will be against Ochre Islands on Thursday, also at the Dalaris State Stadium.

Dantopian national team manager Harold Northgate has selected his starting eleven to face off against Acastanha in the Cup of Harmony. The selection sees a return to the starting line-up for Lyle Runner, who just saw minutes as a substitute against Kamijiro in the previous fixture for the Lions. After two successive draws, Northgate will be expecting a little more out of his side, as they will likely need to secure at least one victory in the group stages to have any hopes of advancing on.

ImageImage
Lyle Runner slots back into his usual spot and captains the Dantopians against the Acastanhadas, who field their strongest eleven on paper.

Acastanha play in a very traditional 4-4-2 shape, which provides a lot of defensive structure, but one mustn't be fooled into thinking Acastanha are a purely defensive side. On the contrary, their counter-attacks from their two banks of four are extremely threatening, so the Lions must be prepared for the pace and directness of the Acastanhada wingers and forwards particularly. A win against Acastanha would put the Lions in a good position to qualify from Group F. Another draw or - even worse - a loss would prove devastating for Dantopia's chances, so a strong performance is required, which is why Northgate has gone to perhaps his favoured starting eleven overall now.

DELACLAVA 1-0 Naixi
Bartoš 58'

Alimov; Baxayev, Champagne, Gouin, Watson (Torres 82'); Temirkanov (Bartos 46'), Heilprin, Lindblad (Weidmann 73'), Anagnakis; Meyer (Tesarik 73'), Khautov.

A great stylistic matchup for the Phoenixes, whose midfielders were able to put a lot of pressure on the Naixi backline through the first half. Although their efforts were fruitless, Delaclava stayed the course, and with the injection of the savvy veteran Martin Bartoš, the game finally shook loose. After an initial shot by Alibek Khautov was saved by Ji Ning, an awkward chip by Durgali Baxayev into the middle of the box bounced around before coming to the feet of Bartoš, who took one step and found himself just yards away from goal, clinically sliding the finish inside the post. Although the primary goal from there was to preserve the win, fans got a first look at life without Lukas Meyer, as Roman Tesarik filled in suitably and Timo Weidmann was steady in his first international appearance.

Government response to arrested mule: "We are proud of him, but he's on his own"

The Department of State and Department of Justice have revealed the identity of the Delaclav citizen who was arrested in Huayramarcan waters on suspicion of drug trafficking, and both Departments have offered statements in the aftermath of the incident.

Lukas Trouba, 21, first made headlines last Thursday when it was revealed that members of the Huayramarca Navy and National Police had intercepted an underwater vessel piloted by Trouba. Trouba and/or the vessel were being used to transport narcotics. When law enforcement intercepted the submarine, Trouba was reported to be under the influence of cocaine and resisting arrest while verbally abusing officers and attempting to evade sophisticated military watercraft by swimming frantically.

While in custody, Trouba continued to use the drugs he was seeking to transport, while describing himself as an "entrepreneur" who sought to take advantage of the lively Anaian drugs market. Trouba remains in custody awaiting trial at Torre Penitentiary, a facility located in Guayaquil with a large population of drug traffickers.

Trouba has quickly become a popular figure back in Delaclava, with many on social media praising the spirit of the "entrepreneur mule" as well as ingenuity in crafting a mini-submarine and his daring yet futile escape attempt. "Delaclav Mule", a song by Huayramarcan reggaeton artist Bad Hamster, reached #1 on his homeland's chart, and the Delaclavs have similarly embraced the tune. "Delaclav Mule" debuted at number 6 on the Vivace 50. Additionally, clubs in Cleopatrana, Santa Lourdes, and other clubbing hotspots are rumored to be serving up Delaclav Mules—a cocktail of vodka, absinthe, ginger ale, cherry, and lime, with a mixture of dried ginger and cocaine on the rim.

In alliance with the general populace, Secretary of State Wanda Carter hesitantly yet with amusement remarked on the cultural value of Trouba. "In some ways, Lukas does represent the best of Delaclava—adventurous, ingenious, an affinity for taboo trades and mind-altering substances, and a dogged determination. And getting high on your own supply while in police custody - who hasn't been there?"

However, Attorney General Steven Davis took a different tone from his colleague, reminding his peers not to "wash over the trouble that one of our citizens has caused in another nation." He stated further, "Some of these activities may be accepted here, and his demeanor and attitude may be celebrated, but large-scale drug distribution is strongly discouraged here and it is illegal in Huayramarca. As always, we will respect the rule of law both here and abroad. We have cooperated fully with Huayramarcan law enforcement in identifying Mr. Trouba, and we will continue to cooperate with the investigation and provide information about our citizens as is helpful and necessary.

"We are not going to make efforts to help one of our citizens avoid punishment when something is very reasonably a criminal offense in another state, and a fair justice system has proved that he did commit that offense."

Carter seemed to recognize as much in her own remarks. "Of course, this person has been celebrated widely, both here and in Huayramarca, over the past days. However, in the name of diplomacy, we cannot interfere with the affairs of another state, nor can we bully them to align with our ways.

"We, as a nation, are proud of him, and proud of his story. But he is on his own now."

I finally woke up in a room lit only by a green paper lantern. In the eerie light, scattered thoughts ran through my mind as I tried to build a picture of where I was and why I was there. Perhaps I was trapped within a lifelike memory of a room at my school. Perhaps the mysterious illness afflicting me was manifesting unusual new side effects and my vision was struggling. Perhaps I had succumbed to it, and this was some peculiar purgatory.

The pain in my abdomen was dull - as if it was being blocked somehow - but I sensed that it was slowly roaring back to life after a short period of hibernation. I became slowly aware that I badly needed to defecate. It seemed as though I hadn't done my business in a long time. I looked around to see if there was anyone around who I could ask where I might find a privy. But all I saw was filthy pillows strewn randomly across the cold stone floor.

There was a queer smell in the air. Perhaps the pillows, used too frequently, were soaked in years worth of sweat. Or perhaps it was me - I might not have emptied my bowels for some time, but there was every chance I'd been wetting myself. But there was something else, too - the aroma was smoky, too. Had there been a fire? I peered around to find evidence of anything engulfed in flames, the image of my school turning to ash freshly planted in my memory. I saw nothing.

A door behind me swung open and I craned my head around to look. An incredibly skinny man leered at me through the blazing white silhouette of the doorway. A lewd grin broke out across his face, and he swung his arms in a truly weird fashion as he hopped oddly into the room. A disgraceful giggle rattled out of his pinched-up mouth, lined by wisps of disgusting facial hair.

"Hehehehe! Well. Well, well, well. The healer is healed! You said the dragon wouldn't rehabilitate you, yeah! You said, hehehehehe, you said, that you had some disease that nothing could fix! Well, eat your crow, silly man! You were wrong! Here you are! If you want to be a corpse, go up the street to the embalmer! You'll find that you don't resemble his usual subjects at all, hehehe. Maybe you just wish you were dead, yeah. Maybe you've just lost your lust for life, yeah. Maybe you just haven't got that hustle in you, yeah."

"Who are you," I rasped back to him with a pained expression.

"You know me! You already know me, yeah. I'm Hsi Men. You just remember the song I taught you. 'I'll be there for you!' That's me, being there for you."

"Where am I?"

He kicked a pillow off to the side forcefully and sat down next to me with crossed legs. "Tan Sifu, you really don't remember anything? It's me, Hsi Men!"

"I don't know you," I said, baffled.

"Astonishing, hehehe. The dragon has wiped away all your troubles but taken your memories, too."

"The dragon?"

He leaned in closer, which was regrettable, because he smelled very much the same way the room did, but just stronger. "You're in the capital, Tan Sifu. You and your assistant walked all the way to the coast, but then he enlisted as an indentured servant in the New Land, yeah. You know where he is, you remember. He's a-working on the railroad, hehehehe! He's an ocean away, learning beneficial skills. Maybe he'll become a blacksmith and develop that into other things later in life. But you stayed. You're sick, yeah. You told me you're sick. You told me you woke up in a puddle, hehehe! The Golden People have a camp out on the edge of the city, and you woke up in a puddle there. They found you stumbling around and figured you were one of my customers, yeah. But they were wrong! You're a new customer! New customers, I love you."

"Customer?"

"The dragon, Tan Sifu! Hehehehe! The dragon."

Finally, it dawned on me what he meant. I was filled with a rage I could barely contain. "You mean to tell me that while I was ill, you gave me opium?"

"You were in terrible pain, Tan Sifu. You asked for it, yeah! And you're in no pain now! Right?"

"I never asked for it."

"You did, hehehe! You did! You've been one of my best customers! Though I'm afraid to say you have not been the best at paying your tab, yeah. We'll talk about that."

"How long have I been here?"

"Oh, a month or so. Hehehe."

"And you've been having me smoke opium the whole time? Just incapacitated and passed out on these pillows?"

He wagged his finger at me at tut-tutted. "Tan Sifu, Tan Sifu. This is what I mean. Do you mean to tell me that you would have preferred to be passed out in a puddle under a collapsed bamboo wall? You really are ill - mentally ill! Hehehe! Perhaps you can use your sifu healer skills on your own brain, yeah? At least you're awake now. Now you can pay me back against that tab you've run up!"

"That is completely out of the question."

He went quiet for once, leaning back and straightening his back. "You may say that now, during a moment of clarity. But just you wait, yeah. Just you wait until that pain in your gut returns. Then we'll see if you are so sure what is and what isn't out of the question. But you'll be back. You know the truth now, yeah. And the truth is that there's only one medicine that will do. There's only one way to halt the agony you feel, and you can't find it by chewing on a bunch of stupid herbs, Tan Sifu. You need me, yeah."

"Be gone."

He smiled wickedly at me. "I'm a kind man, Tan Sifu. You may stay here at no charge for another week. But after that, I must insist that you leave. Only paying customers may stay in this den. What will I tell your roommates when they see you sitting around, declining to partake in the activity they love so much? One week, yeah. And you'll still be expected to pay. Oh yes. You will. You think my bosses in the triads will be as kind as I am? No they won't, hehehe! Or! Or. Or you may continue to be a loyal customer, for which I will be eternally grateful. I recommend the second option. You get your medicine! And I make a profit, yeah. If you are worried you can't pay off your debt - and I'm sure you are, since I have seen how empty your purse is, hehehehe - rest assured you can pay off what's owed significantly by doing a job for me."

I was torn. I genuinely did not have any idea how I'd get out of this sticky situation. If I rejected this degenerate's proposal entirely, I'd simply be thrust back onto the streets, with an army of triad-affiliated goons on my tail, eager to kill me. If I accepted it, I'd be slipping into a life as simply another addict.

"What job?"

"That's the spirit, hehehe. I knew you were a wise man, yeah. That's why they call you a sifu, after all! So, it's easy, actually. Here's the situation. There's not a single opium pipe in this Old Land that isn't kept full due to the work of the Golden People, yeah. They're unbelievably rich, you know. They have flooded our country with this beautiful new medicine. I'm grateful. I am, really, yeah. But they trade it all to middlemen in the emporium by the port. For tea, yeah. The tea merchants come in, trade the tea for the opium, yeah? Then immediately they trade the opium for hard fiat currency at the emporium. What good is a cart full of the stuff out in the countryside where the tea is grown? No, the biggest chunk of customers is here, in the city, hehehehe! So the middlemen have all the opium, yeah. And they artificially raise the prices! Jack the prices right up! Disgusting! So here's what I proposed to my bosses, yeah. What if we send somebody into the emporium in disguise as a tea merchant? We make an offer to trade the tea for the opium at a lower cost, right? We don't have any tea, no. We pull out of negotiations because we don't have any tea to trade after all. But not before we've spooked the others into lowering their prices! And the middlemen can't charge as much anymore!"

"I am sure these people are as truly foul as you are, Hsi Men. But this is the sort of thing you could easily do yourself."

"Ah, no no no, yeah. I can't do it, Tan Sifu. They know me down at the emporium! I'm known to them, hehehehe. They won't recognize me as a tea merchant! They'll recognize me as an opium peddler, hehehe! They'll say I'm interfering with free trade! They'll turn me over to the Golden People and I'll end up swinging from the gallows! It has to be somebody new to the city. Like you."

"So what happens if they don't believe that I'm a tea merchant?"

He laughed hard at this. "You're funny, Tan Sifu, hehehe! You are a very funny person. I think you know what will happen. But they probably will believe you."

"Probably?"

He laughed again. "Probably, yeah."

As much as this whole situation worried me, the alternative was worse. And an idea was forming in my head. Perhaps the choice was not as simple as "face down the opium-hawking triads" and "become an errand-running addict." Perhaps there was a third option...

"Hsi Men, you said all of the opium comes in through the emporium? All of it?"

"Oh yes! Wait until you see how much the Golden People bring in! It's a marvel, hehehe. It's a marvel."

That night, I set out for the emporium in the port. I had made up my mind what I was going to do. I have been haunted by many images during my life, and recently I have learned that there is nothing to be gained from waiting for them to mean something concrete while they terrorize you. It is better, I believe, to treat them as messages from the future sent into the past to be interpreted and acted upon.

The emporium was an enormous wooden structure spanning virtually the entire length of the port. It must have been a half a mile long. I could see very few lanterns lit inside as I investigated it from outside. That's good, I thought. The fewer people inside, the better. Though the hustle and bustle I assumed would have been commonplace during the day wasn't to be found at this hour. What was detectable was the astounding variety of scents emanating from the building. The olfactory aura of incense and spices vibrated in my nose. There was something else, though... a smell I recognized from the opium den I had been residing in for a month.

I located a bale of hay resting in an abandoned cart on the street. Channeling my anger into strength, I seized the thing and dragged it with me into the emporium. I found the most central area I could, warning a vagrant sleeping beneath some wooden rafters to run, and dropped the bale. A torch made itself available to me outside, lighting the street outside a row of shacks. I pulled it down and crept back into the emporium.

I didn't care what was going to happen to me. I knew that I was doomed. I had lived my life in service to healing and non-violence, and all of that had gone to waste. I couldn't undo my failures - to the people of my village or to my assistants - nor could I escape from the trap Hsi Men and the rest of the cretins in this awful city had set for me. If I was going to go down, it wouldn't be without a fight. I'd hit them where it hurt. Threats of being hung by the Golden People or gutted by the triads rang hollow to me - the pain in my abdomen reminded me I was already bearing a mark of death.

I lit the bale of hay with the torch, then slowly walked out and sat down in the middle of the street. The blinking orange and yellow light grew within the emporium as the few occupants began to scatter outward into the safety of the night air. I closed my eyes, and yet still the beauty of my action was unavoidable. The sound of the fire crackling and the smell - familiar, yes - of the burning opium put a smile on my face.

Within minutes, a battalion of Golden People marched in from their encampment in a panic. They desperately tried to put out the fire, but they had no luck at all. The structure had been built quickly and cheaply; it was a miracle the thing hadn't burned down on its own anyway. They found me sitting peacefully in the street, and I did not resist them as they arrested me. They found me happy.

What A Nightmare

Under different circumstances (not three in the morning, not watching his phone on dark mode, not feeling as if he had been hung out to dry under a rolling freight train), Luuk Vennema might have noticed that it was a rather uninspired choice by the head editor, one that probably had made it to print at every shore where the Pirates planted their flag. Newspapers across the footballing community had spelled out the excellence of the Archalitian forward this way already. But The That Period between Afternoon and Evening Post was probably the first one to not print a picture of the man nicknamed "The Nightmare" underneath. Vennema did puzzle for a second whether Nightmare was a stage name, adopted on the back of his shirt, or his actual birth name. In case of the latter, could you still have it as a nickname? Or did slapping the "the" in front of it suffice. How about "The Vennema", he thought and realizing the sadness of his train of thought, he scrolled once more to the picture underneath the aforementioned header. Lyndon Nightmare is actually in it. One cannot see if the ball has already touched the net but despite the lack of background focus, you see the Archalit forward raise a hand. Also, not sharp, both in the photograph and in the shown action, is goalkeeper Johannes Marzinn, desperately trying to grab some air in the hope that the ball somehow decides to thank the regular laws of action and reaction for its noble service, and make a full turn. But sharp, agonizingly sharp, is a defender in Capnordic shirt. He has one knee on the ground, not in a heroic pose, as if he is about to be knighted. No, as a guy who just stumbled over his own feet as he completely lost contact with his direct opponent, crashing down and having accepted his faith. The back of his shirt reads "Vennema".

Not even "The Vennema".

He scrolls further but doesn't even need to read the lines. After four times painstakingly looking for a glitter of mercy from the journalist, he has accepted it as the tirade it is, being able to cite it front to back. It is not what Luuk is looking for. He knows that at about three, if someone in the tech department didn't ruin the stream again, the online articles appear. Scroll and release. Scroll and release. And just when you think it won't happen anymore, the list of Articles you might be interested in if you enjoy reading what a failure Luuk Vennema is gets four new hits at the top.

Pipping the Panijas - How to pull off the Home team Heist?

Ok, so far, so good. An in-depth analysis of the options against Poafmersia. The Camp of Power could be giving them wings but so far, they have stuck to the instructions of Lu Jialan. A set of calm and collected displays pushed the Red Panijas to a status of title candidate. The article identified some minor weaknesses but it felt like clutching straws: the highly-experienced Potts had not yet conceded and Lee nor Robson made mistakes despite several rushes along the wing. It would take a moment of genius from either Carstensen or Bjerkness to release the Whalers.

Till Myrrheim, on Time for the Big Moments

Even if it ran his teammate into the ground, Luuk started to feel a little more relaxed. In part because he believed Till must have been shrugging off these sorts of articles by now. Having a career that saw domestic goal records being broken left and right caused blind panic if the Sandfjell striker missed the target two times in a row. Admittedly, he had looked a little out of depth against Sargossa, spending more time in the back pocket of Gerard Rodríguez than would be desirable from a sanitary point of view. Still, it seemed silly to question the two-meter conveyor belt of goals up front.

Missing the Point - Will Vennema keep costing the Whalers?

Aaaand there you had it. Vennema scanned it diagonally, just enough for the words to soak through. He read nothing he had not read before: a scything analysis of his relegation season with Columbia City, a character sketch focusing on a lack of leadership and a moment-by-moment overview of the winning goal from Archalit. Who was at fault for conceding the corner kick (Vennema), who gave too much space to Cynthia Harmonia (Vennema) and who was to blame for the poor weather in Mancodas (unclear, but possibly Luuk Vennema). Yes, Pazron Finchley had declared after the game that he stood by the central defender but, the press argued, if he had not been pisspoor, why would the Lozhoan gaffer need to make such a statement in the first place? It sounded dumb to Luuk when he read it the first time, but bit by bit he agreed it started to make sense.

The Gap in Front of Marzinn's Nose

And somehow, this last one did hurt a little more. Despite not being mentioned. Because he was not mentioned. The opening paragraph summarized the impact and importance of Patrick van Hilvaren. Luuk knew that the compliment People no longer refer to van Hilvaren as the new Doornbosch, but rather to Krijn Doornbosch as the van Hilvaren of his time was one that would be touching for Patrick as he idolized the fellow Sporting Noordende legend. Subsequently, they attempted to find a successor. First, they lamented the lack of young, starting, central defenders in the Premier Division: only Sielhafen's Moritz Niemeyer and Clyde Bullock from Gleburgh were given clemency. Up next, the youth ranks were scouted, from Sandfjell's Vinquist all the way to a bunch of 15-year olds. In the end, the writer was desperate enough to analyze the odds for a call-up for Squidroidian Kensan or Sylestone's Alleyne, pondering their price to jump ship. There were even a few sentences on the rules of double-nationals such as Fratta Singhateh, who had quite the competition to win a selection for either Banija or Chromatika. Anyone would have done app-

"What, in the name of Jezus Christ on a pogo stick, are you doing?"

Panicking, Luuk pushed the back button a few times, all the way to the original article.

"Give me that."

Patrick van Hilvaren snatched the phone out of his roommate's hands and carefully studied the picture.

"One goal against in two games and all they can do is rain down on the defenders. Sometimes, I swear, those writers are just pushing a narrative, whatever the results might be."

Luuk looked a bit sheepishly in the distance, trying to look as if he wasn't worrying.

"Look, I can tell you're worrying, Luuk but you know what. When I was your age, they still called me the dollar store Doornbosch. Sometimes those leeches just… Don't know any better. Like that picture… It even was offside. You'll do fine."

The veteran of the duo almost put his head on his pillow, but had one more closing remark.

"You'll do fine, with and without me. And next time I catch you on your phone in the bloody middle of the night, it better be for something x-rated rather than doomscrolling."

Delaclava Fuel
By Rami Niblick in Naksa, Poafmersia

GIVEN recent developments, I'd imagine that our next opponents are glad that they're playing their next game here in Poafmersia rather than in Huayramarca. Whilst the Krytenian political elite are busy negotiating how to police the Ocean of Ayes against foreign contraband, Delaclav national Lukas Trouba has been getting himself in hot water with the Huayramarcan authorities after being caught - in a submarine, no less! - with an undisclosed amount of the ol' nose sugar. Now, far be it from me to get on a high horse about narcotics, but if you're trying to smuggle it into a country taking a hard line on hard drugs, that's probably not going to end well for you.

Speaking of not ending well for people, it's pretty fair to say whoever loses today's match between the Dragons and Phoenixes is going to find it hard to qualify for the second round. True, Krytenia have the advantage of having already got their game against the Holy Empire out of the way, but they also have the disadvantage of not playing on the final matchday. In other words, we need to make sure of a top two place - if we can - in winning against not only Delaclava, but also our final group match against Naixi. Of course, what happens around us is out of our control, which doesn't help matters.

The Delaclavs will not be making it easy for us, as you'd expect. Talismanic striker Lukas Meyer is on his last tour of duty for the national side, and will want to go out in style. Add a midfield packed with talent, and it could be a long day defensively. That said, Krytenia themselves have a strong midfield presence of their own, and in captain Savannah Quinn, an important player approaching the twilight of their career. Quinn hasn't announced her retirement - yet - but time is catching up to her, and she'll do well to retain her place in the first eleven by the time Krytenia get around to defending their CAFA title in a couple of years' time. In addition, Angus Jack is a proven cause of headaches in defenders wherever he goes, and he's got plenty of miles left in the tank.

This, then, is a true test of where both sides are in terms of international prowess. For one, the road to glory will be a lot shorter; for the other, the path becomes a lot more winding and treacherous. Time to put the pedal to the metal. Onward!

Sporting Daily: A review at the training grounds used by CoH Teams

For the ongoing Cup of Harmony, a grand total of 30 teams will play games of football across two nations, including at 8 stadiums in Poafmersia. But apart from the 8 stadiums as mentioned, Poafmersia also opened up the training grounds at 9 locations around the country. In this short and sweet report, we would like to present to everyone which of these 10 locations are.

In Dalaris (the state and city)
Both Dalaris clubs have their own training facilities within city boudaries. These training facilities also comprises of a main field for their academy games, and is thus suitable for small friendly games within each national team. Dalaris City owns the larger Dalaris Training Grounds, with a 12,000 seater Dalaris Academy Field part of the training area for the senior and academy clubs. Meanwhile, Dalaris Sports U19s usually does their training at the smaller Johanas Stadium, open to the public for their various exercises at times, and also has an outer running track as part of the multi-use facility. During the course of the Cup of Harmony, the stadium was mainly reserved for usage for the participating teams.

In Piskn
Naksa Lane, just a stone throw away from the main Naksa Stadium, as well as Rukiya Park, located 2 bus stops away from the main Rukiya Sports Stadium, are the only 2 training facilities available on the island. These are relatively open spaces built as part of the local parks in Naksa and Rukiya respectively, with around 5 to 6 thousand seating capacity in those areas. Because the locale clubs usually train in their home ground, these grounds are only used in the day time, and there is a lot of makeshift barricades that are prepared during PDL gamedays for their respective academy clubs.

Outside of Trimidau Island, the city of Offsdi opened their combined training ground for teams to use. As part of the Offsdi Sports Complex, the Offsdi Stadium (cap. 55,500) is the shared stadium of the Supreme League clubs Offsdi Galaxy and Offsdi Dalas, and there are 2 side training fields that is also used for training by the local football clubs. This is a good area that can be shared between 2-3 teams located in the Trimidau area, and is around 1-2 hour journey away by local rail from the Island.

In Mancodas
Mancodas is home to 3 big clubs, but there are also some side stadiums that were opened for the purpose of training for the teams. The largest of them is Calerfree Lane (cap. 31,150), home of Darcon Mancodas FC, a smaller fan-owned club located in the outskirts of the Greater Mancodas area. While the club is now as rich as the 3 main Mancodas clubs, they have their own complete set of training facilities, inclusive of a gymnasium, sponsored by the local Mancodas council. At times, the club would open up the gymnasium for use by the local citizens for a token fee, especially during off months for the club. Apart from that, the Mancodas Academy Field, home to the academy team of FC United of Mancodaas, is part of the larger FC United training ground for the team and their academy squad. It is also one of the more complete facilities, with the main field having a complete grandstand with up to 18,000 seating, and a side field that is useful for drills training. The two other public facilities available are the West Mancodas Stadia and the City of Mancodas Field, public fields that are shared with the community during non-training days, and reserved for the academy teams of Mancodas Athletic FC and Mancodas City respectively. The grounds, with a seating of around 14,000 spectators, are also where the academy teams of the respective clubs play some of their games as part of an agreement with the local council. Both grounds are one of the only few public-shared grounds that are complete with lighting facilities and are suitable for training at night. It is also worth noting that the West Mancodas Stadia is an artificial turf stadium, useful for teams who are preparing to play games on artificial turf during the playoffs in the Dreamers Park.

Strait between Mournhow & Juniper, Ochre Islands
After the Ko-orenite ships arrived

Commander de Blays hoped that his message of a signal flag had been understood by the fleet in the fog, and that they were friendly enough to respond. If the ships in the fog were not friendly, the signal would likely be taken as a threat, and he would be done for. However, as de Blays shuddered on the bridge bracing for a hard-fought demise, he was shocked to see the guns of the ships in the fog were not turned on the Mertganian frigate, but instead on the Bostopian corvettes. The Ko-orenite flag stood proudly on the vessels, signalling redemption and another shot at survival. The flak fire from the Ko-orenite fleet was mighty, taking the further forward of the Bostopian corvettes out in a single volley. Cannon-sounding gunfire boomed as the Bostopians put another round towards the Mertagnian frigate, but the Bostopian corvette was quickly seen moving its gun turrets around to face the bigger threat.

“Captain, we’ve been joined by Ko-orenite forces. What are we to do here?” asked an officer on the bridge.

“Continue emergency repairs, but manoeuvre ourselves so that the Ko-orenites act as a bracer. Recalibrate our surface missiles and keep those guns focused on the Bostopian corvette. I think the Ko-orenites can handle it from here, but we need to be sure before we are escorted away.” replied the Commander. Grabbing the ship’s main console, he began to thrust what little was left of the engines forward. The engineers in the engine room braced as the ship lurched slowly through the water, their repairs to the ship’s other engines failing to be completed quickly, as the rattling from the missile had placed one side nearly completely out of action.

The bridge looked to one of the doors as a flustered sailor entered. “Captain, we’re intaking water. It’s just a few cracks but it’s likely what took out the primary starboard engine. We’re attempting to patch them now but this could take some time.”

“Good job, mariner.” shouted Commander de Blays, as he looked around at the final Bostopian corvette, which was manoeuvring to retreat. The Ko-orenite fleet continued their fire on the Bostopian ship, and judging by the firing pattern, were looking to disable it entirely.

“Ready for another volley, captain.” crackled the communications from the weapons facility.

The Commander gritted his teeth. Helping the Ko-orenites disable this vessel would provide some useful intelligence. “Fire on the enemy weapons. I want those guns taken out. And get some soldiers on the deck - I see lifeboat movement from the first target. I don't assume they won't fire back in this situation.”

The Mertagnian soldiers, few in number on a vessel of this size, emerged on the starboard side of the stealth frigate, armed with scoped rifles. As the fire from the main guns of the ship aimed towards the remaining corvette, the marksmen trained their rifles on the boats that had begun to emerge from the sinking corvette and out to sea, ready to recieve Bostopian prisoners. However, it seemed that the Bostopians weren't willing to go down without a fight, and as three marksmen fell one by one on the stealth frigate, two back and one overboard, from boat-bound machine gun fire, the Mertagnians were forced to engage.

Bullets whirled back and forth across the water, in an exchange which felled several of the active Bostopian combatants. The Mertagnians, looming from the high ground, continued to suppress naval infantry movements with their fire, taking a few casualties in the process. The skirmish quickly evaporated as another volley from the Ko-orenites to the remaining enemy ship saw a white flag hastily raised and the remaining colours stricken from the final Bostopian corvette, which looked to have a large hole in its side and was rapidly taking in water. This sign of surrender was recievd by the Mertagnian and Ko-orenite forces, who rapidly met the Bostopian soldiers at sea level on a patrol dinghy, with their own guns trained on anyone that dared break the conditions of their surrender.

Commander de Blays ordered a round-up of the surviving Bostopian soldiers, before they were to be delivered to the brig of the Ko-orenite vessels and taken back to Bellflower. The captain of the first corvette was met by the commander, the Bostopian’s brown eyes looking at the Mertagnian sea captain with contempt.
“You’re not supposed to be here.” spat the Bostopian, his arms and legs bound as he kneeled on the floor.

“Neither are you.” replied Commander de Blays. “I suppose you thought that everyone would just roll over easy if you sailed into the Ochres, right?”

“These islands and the people within are the rightful property of Emperor Boston himself!” cried the Bostopian.

Commander de Blays tore a patch off of the prisoner’s arm. Royston. “Listen, Royston, you should consider yourself lucky. You’ve been taken prisoner by a civilised nation that won’t execute you on sight. You’ll get to live out the rest of this war from a lovely prisoner facility over on Anley or something. The rest of us aren’t so lucky, and still have to continue fighting you fascist scum until you leave.”

“You have made a grave mistake taking on Bostopia in a fight." replied Royston, almost rabid. "Once word of this gets out of this damn cage of an archipelago there will be hell to pay. I reckon your hometown is being carpet-bombed by the Bostopian Air Force as we speak. Have you got any kids? You certainly don’t now, not when the Emperor’s done with you. He’ll have your head on a spike for what you’ve done here.”

The sheer conviction with which this Bostopian mariner was spouting his brand of nonsense was concerning to Commander de Blays. Could they all be like that? If that were true, this conflict - which had only just begun - would be much more of a slog than he had believed it would be.

“Take him away, please. And put up a flag for the Ko-orenites - we might need a bit of help getting out of here.”

OOC - this is obviously an IC post only, and doesn't reflect my RL opinions. Most of you should be able to work out what I'm doing now; I hope.

A STATEMENT FROM THE HOLY EMPIRE FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION

The Holy Empire Football Association would like to apologise for our previous two statements over World Cup 94 qualification and the status of the Cup of Harmony. Those responsible were clearly in denial over recent events, or were so angry that they temporarily lost control of their senses. The first group have removed from engagement with World Cup Committee-run events until they have completed a training course in Mundy Relations, while the second group have been sent to the beach with attractive members of their sex/gender of preference so that they can unwind a bit, get laid, and relax.

But look, isn't there something we can perhaps do to get into the World Cup 94 finals instead of participating in the Cup of Harmony? Yes, we know that the World Cup 94 finals are well underway. Yes, we know that after matchday 4 of the Cup of Harmony we've reached the knock-out stages with a match to spare - that's all fine. But wouldn't the World Cup Committee prefer to see us in the World Cup?

Let's put a few facts on the table here... We're the only remaining active participant from World Cup 1; we've won 5 World Cup titles; we hold the record for the most consecutive qualifications for the finals; we're one of the most successful teams in the history of the tournament... wouldn't you rather have us playing in the World Cup rather than is this <checks notes> 'Cup of Harmony'? Wouldn't you rather see us play teams like Vilita, Valanora, and Audioslavia in action-packed ratings-friendly matches rather than see us beat <checks notes> Dod Rava 3-1 in some meaningless Cup of Harmony match that no one will remember past next Tuesday?

So talk to us! Let's bargain... What can we do to convince you to ignore that idiotic and frankly unlikely last day of Group 13 qualification and put us in the World Cup where we so clearly belong. We all know you'd prefer to see us in top-level competition rather than being forced to play <checks notes yet again> 'Naixi'. I mean, c'mon... 'Naixi' doesn't even sound real.

You know where to find us. You know how to get in touch. If you're prepared to bargain over this, just let us know, and we're sure we can make a deal. It's really easy... Yuezhou and Pemecutan are facing off in the World Cup second round - both teams were in our qualifying group... All you have to do is get rid of one of the two, and substitute us in instead. No one will really mind.

Yours,

The Holy Empire Football Association

Krytenia 0–3 DELACLAVA
Meyer 25' 71', Heilprin 42'

Alimov; Baxayev, Champagne, Gouin (Maier 72'), Torres; Temirkanov (Bartos 46'), Heilprin (Mayer 46'), Lindblad, Anagnakis; Meyer (Vandaele 72'), Khautov.

An intriguing matchup for two fast-moving offensive-styled teams, with some familiarity with each other, and with high stakes in Group E. Both teams also came in hungry with something to play for after successful regional tournaments were followed by disappointing qualifying campaigns. But the drama dissolved rather quickly as the Phoenixes took control of the game. The action was reasonably back-and-forth, but Delaclava was just a bit more accurate in the midfield and more potent with its chances, and the soon-to-depart Lukas Meyer managed to break the ice within the first half-hour. Andrej Heilprin picked a good time for his first international goal to extend the lead and the Phoenixes cruised from there, locking up a second win and drawing significantly closer to a berth in the Round of 16.

DELACLAVA 1–2 The Holy Empire
Gretler 61' | Vakraas 34' 83'

Alimov; Meñica, Champagne, Gouin, Watson (Torres 85'); Temirkanov (Zaitsev 46'), Heilprin (Weidmann 85'), Lindblad (Tudor 46'), Anagnakis; Meyer, Gretler.

A back-and-forth battle between the Phoenixes and the once-mighty Frosties had a guaranteed spot in the next round on the line. It would be The Holy Empire who took the spoils, with a mix of centuries of experience, shapeshifting, and the ability to bend space and time just slightly besting a handful of impetuous, sexually prolific 20-somethings. Regardless, the way the groups have shaken out, Delaclava is through to the next round anyway. They are well likely to finish second ahead of Naixi, but even in third, they will finish ahead of the third-placed teams of Groups C, D, and F. As always, though, it would be unwise to advance backwards into the next round, and so expect the Phoenixes to be at close to full strength when they try to get a statement win against Dod Rava.

Waringpost
Activist groups organize animals fights in support of, or protest of, WA resolution at vote

As the World Assembly yet again tries to clumsily repeal a brainlessly written resolution with the empty promise that they will do it better the next time, Delaclavs have been openly defying the legislation currently in place.

"We have all had enough of this illegitimate world government fumbling about for decades," said William Hotchkiss, president of the fringe animal entertainment group Play Hard, Fight Harder, F*** Hardest (PHFHFH, typically pronounced fuhf-woof). "So we are going to live our lives the way we know best, and these pansies can continue to hem and haw and angrily wave their quills at us."

In response to the pending repeal of "Ban on Forced Blood Sports," which is expected to pass and to legalize animal fighting around the world, PHFHFH has celebrated by teaming up with Hybrid CC to organize what are colloquially being called "pillow fights", vicious interspecies battles between koalas and sloths, organized at various locations around Delaclava, including Carnstone, Salem, and Valhalla (the "Igloo Wars").

Zero deaths or injuries have been reported, although some fans have suffered bouts of narcolepsy and others have been treated for toxic fume inhalation due to the stench of sloth poop (seriously, look it up, you'll regret you did).

It is, again, unclear whether this is a celebration of the impending freedoms or a protest of the vacillating ways of the World Assembly, but as one fan at the Igloo Wars—who asked to remain anonymous—put it, it's some of both. "It's tough living under the control of Inattentive Big Brother," the spectator said. "Anytime they wipe one of these awful pieces of legislation off the books and go back to tripping over their dicks for six months, it's a good day."
