What a game at the Estádio do Século! This match is one of the most intense we've seen at this year's Coupe du monde, and perhaps one of the most nail-biting games in a generation! 'Underdogs' of football Ansan and Bonaventura proverbially slaughtered each other for 90 straight minutes in a game so hectic no clear winner was found until the final seconds of extra-time.

The game began with a strong series of attacks from Bonaventura, though each attempt at goal was not on target. A frightful Ansene counter-attack put the Bonaventurans in gear; and on the wings of Imondi the black-reds scored the first goal of the match within the 22nd minute. It was no further than seven minutes later when Imondi led the charge again, bypassing the Ansense defenders in a display of pace and ball-control enviable in football; before striking a second goal squarely above Kwang-Hyok's head.

The Ansene team favoured an early substition that saw manager Francois Choi replace two of his defenders and "the conscripts" certainly came across as more invigorated. Dae-Jung alleviated the spirits of the game and intensified it with a screamer of a goal from outside the box that blew past Richelme. A crucial 3rd minute of extra-time at half time saw Tolteco get yellow-carded for tackling Jong-Yul within the box, and awarded a penalty to the conscripts - Jong-Yul calmly scored a second goal for his team before earning himself a yellow-card by removing his shirt in the celebrations.

An all-equal end to the second half intensified dramatically as Ansan took the game to their favour, with Jong-Yul scoring a second goal after dribbling past a scattered defence from the Red-Blacks.

However, the Red-Blacks were far from out. A series of subs of their centre allowed a more diverse playing field, and Tapayaxi played off of this new players extremely well - scoring in the 70th minute.

The game was neck and neck until the final moments, when in the final minute of extra-time di Tommaso delivered the performance of a life-time with a scorpion kick off of a corner into the goal.
Goals: Imondi (22', 29'), Dae-Jung (38'), Ryu Jong-Yul (45+3' (P), 61'), Tapayaxi (70'), di Tommaso (90+4')
Cards: Tolteco, Ryu Jong-Yul (yellow-cards)

Thoughts regarding 1-0 against AFR.

Image
Collage of yesterday's game
Rémont -

Vinalians after 20 years were teased to a game of plenty of nerves but no results. Few games feature a stopped penalty, a VAR removed goal, and one of the most controversial calls that could have put a penalty for Vinalia at 90. Vinalia played a splendid game of football against one of the best squads in the Coupe du Monde, and escaped with a 1-0 result.

The Vosha put it differently, “We played a splendid game of football, but we could not finish. We were a runner that falls 10 meters from the finish line.” the Vinalian coach stated yesterday.

The feelings were the same for most of the Vinalian squad, which survived through great adversity and issues, only to lose 1-0.

However the Oranges found great skill, and potential in a match few slated them to win. It was a tremendous display from the national team, which left many clamoring for more. The Vultures, must be feeling the weight of their own inability to score more against their Asterian rivals. The AFR which has, and will remain the favorites to win the group, would desire a strong goal difference to ensure a favorable ranking in the first 1-12 slots in the ranking of 32.

Vinalia for its part, knows it can attack favorably. Along with keeping the Vultures to just 1. Vinalias fate in the Group, have always rested on its ability to defeat the Amathian squad on Peace Day, July 12. Should Vinalia walk away with a victory against Amathia, it would need a victory or a draw, and a favorable victory by the AFR over Amathia to classify on the second position of the group. The small -1 GD, makes any Vinalian attempts at a good position in the 13-24 slots for 2nd place teams, quite favorable.

The most important aspect for the Oranges, remains their ability to continue that great football we saw on Thursday. If Vinalia is able to capitalize on its offense against the Amathians, Vinalia will obtain a crucial victory. All the hopes of our national team have always depended on the game against the Amathians.

Shangea found their stride early as they displayed a completely dominant performance over Sohar to put them in pole position in Group K. The Jade Division's opener was scored by Duo Bingtian, who rifled home from outside the box in the 28th minute, completely deceiving Boulos in net. They doubled their lead in the 40th minute after a deflection off of Alaa Mifsud found its way to Kuang Biao with an open net in front of him.

Shangea did not take their foot off the pedal in the second half, racking up attempts on goal, but conceded an unfortunate penalty in the 64th minute after the ball struck Luo Kai's arm in an unnatural position. Bebi Issa converted the penalty for the Stags, but it was not enough to sway the Shangeans, who put their third past Boulos just three minutes after the penalty with some smooth link-up play between Kuang and Tao Shaoqing being finished by the latter.

Goals: Duo Bingtian (28'), Kuang Biao (40'), Beba Issa (64' (pen.)), Tao Shaoqing (67')
Cards: None
Player of the Match: Kuang Biao (SHA)

The King-Killers lived up to their name as they delievered a shock blow to Werania at the Estádio Zapote that has blown Group B wide open. The Hammers opened the game well, as expected, when Mohsen Akbarian cleanly finished a strike off of Adolf Shaanika's through ball in the 21st minute. The teams went into the half with the scoreline still at 1-0.

But Montecara delivered a resilient second-half performance. Spartaco Marro brought them level after a lucky deflection off of Anton Kieber found its way into the back of the net in the 70th minute. Werania pushed for the second, but a lovely counter-attack by Montecara as the Hammers were out of position trying to score gave them the lead in the 83rd minute as Giulio Silano slotted home. Werania were unable to score again as a stalwart Montecaran defensive formation that saw all ten outfield players behind the ball held its own for the final ten minutes, led in part by an incredible performance by goalkeeper Agabì Milò.

Goals: Mohsen Akbarian (21'), Spartaco Marro (70'), Giulio Silano (83')
Cards: Sansòn Cola (yellow)
Player of the Match: Agabì Milò (MON)

GROUP STAGE: DAY 8

Group A's matches have opened to a tremendous fervour today, with Caldia and Ardesia meeting at the Estádio do Anel de Prata in Porto Sotiri. A beautiful seaside stadium was the sight of a second Ardesian victory, cementing them as the first team to officially have a guaranteed position within the Round of 32. Caldia was looking for a win with this game, having equalised against Nainan at their match last week, and unfortunately have found themselves in a severely disadvantageous position.

The match began with Os Galos in control. Felipe Gusmão began the kick-off, and the Ardesians played a coordinated game of attack within the mid-field and forward that saw the first quarter of the game strongly held in Caldia's half. The succession of goals began with an Ardesian build-up of momentum on a counter; Mata, Furfaro and Vasco beautifully played the greatest game as if they were dancing. Their movements were fluid, leading to Vasco's fantastic one-on-one with Ó Flanagáin where a decisive instep shot blew past the Caldish goalie in the 19th minute. The Ardesians followed this up within 6 minutes, with Vasco scoring through a header on a corner shot delivered by de Sá.

25 minutes of the match had passed and Os Galos were 2-0 up, but a reinvigorated Caldish attack following a substitution by Faolán Ó Seoigh saw Benayoun be subbed on in favour of Maoldhomhnaigh. Benayoun's presence redefined the Caldish game, and after 10 minutes on the pitch he scored a backheel shot that completely caught Ardesia's defence by surprise at the 37th minute. Four minutes of extra time were given, and a Caldish free kick following Mata being given a yellow-card saw Mac Diarmada chip the ball over the defensive wall and through goalkeeper captain Vasco's hands.

The second half saw a glimmer of hope for that Caldish attack as Mac Uilliam scored a monstrously swift goal within the 48th minute in a move commentators described as "incredibly sloppy" for the Ardesian defence. Eugénio Ettore took note and substituted out two of his defenders for fresh faces Mata and Rebelo. What truly changed the game however was a sense of Caldish complacency; Ó Seoigh seemed to have reverted to a more defensive mindset that the Ardesians would go on to exploit. Vasco would score two more goals in the 54th minute, which equalised the game, and again in the 57th. Ardesia was now 4-3 in the lead, and Caldish attempts at counterattacks were repelled by the fresh Mata and Rebelo. The attempts at substituting the forward of the Devils in Purple did not work as intended, and the Ardesians maintained an incredibly aggressive game of counterattacks after every Caldish attempt to equalise.

The Ardesians kept up the pressure in the final third of the game, with Salgado and Coelho scoring a goal apiece through two penalties sloppily awarded to Os Galos by an over-pressured Caldish defence in the 70th and 83rd minute, giving two defenders to yellow cards. 8 minutes of additional time were added, and eighteen year old Coelho scored another goal, an intense outside shot that caused Ó Flanagáin to dive in the wrong direction.

Goals: Vasco (19', 25', 54', 57'), Benayoun (37'), Mac Diarmada, (45+5'), Mac Uilliam (48'), Salgado (70' (P)), Coelho (83' (P), 90+5')
Cards: Mac Cearbhaill, Mac Uilliam (yellow cards)
Player of the Match: Arturo Vasco

Os Abutres win their first game; what next?
8th July, 2023 | By Fábio Fontes

Image
Camara directing the AFR team from the sidelines
after a Vinalian shot on goal in the fifth minute.

São Agostinho, Ardesia - Os Abutres opened the CdM with a 1-0 victory over Vinalia that no doubt came a bit too close for comfort for manager Marco Camara's tastes. A Vinalian shot on goal in the fifth minute was saved by Teixeira, and the AFR swiftly showed their Asterian counterparts how it was done with Vaz scoring the only goal of the game in the eleventh minute.

That is not to say the game was dull, far from it. Saraiva well earned his title of player of the match for superb work in the defence throughout the entire game, endlessly hounding the hapless Vinalian captain Shevchenko for the first half. A poor tackle by Azevedo against Eutímio in the 37th minute led to the Vinalian player vigorously protesting a yellow card, only to be given a red card for his troubles and a penalty awarded to the AFR, which was missed by Vaz. A spirited Vinalian counter-attack was held off by Saraiva and Valente, the AFR's formidable defence showing its capabilities.

The second half opened with veteran forward André Silva taking the place of Miguel Eutímio, while Vinalia's captain Yurik Shevchenko was replaced by Paulo Ruiz. Leaving Silva on the bench was deemed a controversial move among some commentators, who believed Eutímio lacked the same degree of experience necessary to operate as a lone forward. But Camara's strategy was seemingly proven correct when a fresh Silva scored a goal in the 50th minute, only to have it disallowed by the VAR. The rest of the game largely saw the AFR on their favoured ground, the defense, with the Vinalians unable to break through. Seemingly overcome with enthusiasm, one AFR fan in a yellow and green vulture outfit leapt from the stands, only to be tackled by security. The AFR's team mounted a brief counter-attack during extra time, with Moreira taking a shot almost from the halfway line that barely deflected off the crossbar, and a last minute Vinalian counter-attack to equalise was stopped by Teixeira in the closing seconds of the game.

A visibly pleased Camara, after the game, said that he was happy with the team's performance. When it was pointed out that a 1-0 victory doesn't leave the AFR on top of the group due to goal difference, Camara was dismissive. "1-0 is the same as 2-1 or 3-2 for goal difference." Camara said. "A team with a clean sheet wants to keep that sheet clean as a badge of pride. We had three solid attempts on goal, and if it were not for the football-ruining invention that is VAR, we would have been 2-0 up." With the highest-ranked team in the group other than the AFR defeated, Camara was confident about qualifying. "We have Amathia and the Île d'Émeraude left to play. Based on their match, and our performance against Vinalia, I do not believe we have much to worry about, as our defence is better than Amathia's, but the game is unpredictable. The Île d'Émeraude team seems young and inexperienced, but inexperience does not mean not a threat."

The match started with Chistovodia pressing with high lines and shoving Garambura back into their half of the pitch with no perspective of leaving anytime soon. However, in the 12th minute, a bad pass from Karapetrov to Bohšsa saw Garamburan's left man, Baba Magoué, intercept the ball and outrun the Retinue's defense to score a screamer right in between Onyshchuk's legs.

The goal sparked the flames back in the hearts of the Bahians, who commenced a series of dangerous vertical plays. In 10 minutes, Garambura had attempted 11 times, with one ball being cleared away from the top of the goal line by Barys Bohšsa. In one of Chistovodia's few counterattacks, Holovko attempted a shot denied by Garambura's young goalkeeper out for a corner. As the Bahian defense cleared the ball from the area, in the 22nd minute, Bahdan Marcinkievič volleyed the ball into the net from 24 yards to level the game up for the Retinue. About 10 minutes later, another corner originated from a counterattack that saw Barys Bohšsa jumping higher than the whole Garamburan defense to head the ball into the net, bringing Chistovodia ahead.
A tuss in the midfield began in the 39th minute when Lindamkonto violently brought down Sheremet, and it resulted in Novikov, Karapetrov, Lindamkonto, Mubako, Yenga, and Magoué receiving yellow cards. After the VAR reviewed the play, the referee unvalidated Lindamkonto's yellow card and gave him a red pass straight to the shower. With Karapetrov on the free kick, Chistovodia scored their third goal.

Garambura did not back down in the second half; even with one man down, they kept their aggressive stance on Chistovodia. A debatable posture taken by the Asterians, Chistovodia sat back on the result and allowed Garambura to play its game. However, the Garamburan offense kept on either kicking the ball wide or having it tackled or intercepted by Bohšsa, who had an inspired night. To further complete the Bahian demise, Karapetrov scored his second goal of the night in the 76th minute after a fast counterattack, sealing the score for the night.

Goals: Baba Magoué (12'), Bahdan Marcinkievič (22'), Barys Bohšsa (31'), Todor Karapetrov (43', 76')
Cards: Ihor Novikov, Todor Karapetrov, Floride Mubako, Sikhanïle Yenga, and Baba Magoué (yellow); Maurille Lindamkonto (red)
Player of the Match: Barys Bohšsa (CHI)

Hennehouwe kept their good momentum going with a convincing 2-0 win against Siamat. The veteran Lennard Hoekstra slotted in defence in place of the suspended Daniel Bačić. The Hennish defence had an early scare when Nimmit Pinthong had a good chance fall to him early on in the 9th minute, but the Siamati striker was unable to convert. It was Matteo Renzo who opened the scoring for the Lions, capping off a nice team goal off of Samir Safar's through ball in the 33rd minute. Sjaak ten Barge was brought down in the box for a penalty in the 60th minute, but upon insisting he take it, blasted it over the bar a minute later. Aron Lefevre took a knock in the 70th minute that forced him out of the game, but it was his replacement Francesco Tesoro who doubled the lead for Hennehouwe, fooling the Siamati defence with a fake shot and converting a simple one-on-one with the goalkeeper in the 82nd minute.

Goals: Matteo Renzo (33'), Francesco Tesoro (82')
Cards: None
Injuries: Aron Lefevre (will be fine for next game)

The Jaguars bounced back strongly after a nightmare start, erasing their negative goal difference with a thumping 4-1 win over Kuthina. Kiprijas Hanamuras scored Aucuria's first in the 12th minute, after an amazing run was beautifully finished with a chip finish over the Kuthine goalkeeper. Star striker Petras Naveikas added his third of the tournament in the 27th minute, heading home from an Antanas Moskatellas corner. Aucuria conceded one in the first half additional time, when the outstretched leg of Soterijonas Ljokėkontoris unfortunately turned the ball into his own net.

Aucuria did not let up in the second half, though, as Moskatellas struck perfectly from outside the box into the top-left hand corner, giving Aucuria their third of the game in the 48th minute. Substitute Solarijonas Rimša tapped home the Jaguars' fourth in the 91st minute after a run from Čapatipomas Aleksynas saw him face a practically open goal.

Goals: Kiprijas Hanamuras (12'), Petras Naveikas (27'), Soterijonas Ljokėkontoris (45+2' (OG)), Antanas Moskatellas (48'), Solarijonas Rimša (90+1')
