In the hills above Jan Mayen, Alexsandr van Sorensen was missing his second Terns game in a row. Well. That wasn’t strictly true. He had it on. It was playing, but he wasn’t really paying any attention. The Terns were one-nil down, that’s all he knew. No sooner had the game kicked off than his mind had started wandering back to the topic that was pre-occupying his every thought these days. That speech.

“True Valhallans, my time in power has been a time of great change for the nation. We have grown as a people, as a land, and as a force in Rushmore. Domestically, we have lowered crime, we have brought about greater unity than ever before, and we have destroyed the enemies that sought to chip away at us from within... ”

People were already calling it ‘The Kalten Address’. Well. Some people were. Those that had seen it. Those who were paying attention. Those who actually cared about the precarious future of democracy in the Federation.

Alexsandr scoffed to himself at that word. Democracy. The idea was almost nothing but a memory these days. He’d seen it coming at the time, had been one of a few public figures to speak out against the rise of The Party, but what did an old footballer know about politics, eh? At least, that had been the line aimed at him by those in suits. Truth was his synaesthesia really did give him something of a sixth sense for things like this. It made him wonder sometimes if all the adverts for ‘psychics’ at local clubs who could claim to contact the dead or read your aura were actually just synaesthetes like him, albeit, in a different way. He could taste distrust hanging around Lund and his cronies at the very start of everything. He could smell the bad intentions. Aura reading might be hack, but, he’d been proved right, hadn’t he?

“Internationally, we have not needed to poke our noses into places where they were not wanted for the nations of Rushmore to understand our might. We sit, at the top of the region, looking down on all below us. Surveying all. Observing all. The Valhallan Terns flies, soars, and circles above our opponents, at home and abroad. We are strong. Together, we are mighty. This Federation, this string of islands stretching from east to west, from south to a north where all lines of longitude converge, just as the attention of the Multiverse does, on us. We fight the snow. We fight the ice. We fight the cold. Compared to the daily battles against our home, our enemies seem small in comparison...”

Well, so long as you saw things with your eyes wide open, anyway. Those who preferring comforting lies to unpopular truths would continue to think things were fine.

“Elections were fair! You just lost! Get over it! The economy is fine, we don’t need foreigners! Valhalla stronk! Wait, what’s that? I mean, the rest of the Multiverse needs to see what a good example we are, open the country up!”

The Party said jump and the people asked, ‘how high?”

“...our armies have grown stronger. Our navy is incomparable. Our air force is well equipped. Our people are ready to die for this country, and thanks to such fervour, thanks to the passion that you, my True Valhallans, have demonstrated on my command, none have had to.”

It was demoralising. The people could have been told that up was down and left was right and they’d eventually believe it. Alexsandr didn’t know what had happened to the Federation that he’d grown up in.

Except he did. Sargossa had happened. Unintentionally, of course. He was sure that the suits in Soluca hadn’t intended to accidentally become the origin story for a dictator. He was sure Lund wasn’t even on their radar when they’d made the decision to execute the old Governor. Whether or not they’d hoped the crisis would do for Iversen-Eklund and her coalition wasn’t going to ever be clear to anyone outside of Sargossa, but he was sure they’d hoped for more than just half of Külmsaar as a return to their investments. Nonetheless, some Federal land and the destruction of Valhallan interests in that region of Oygruppen for the foreseeable future in return for a trade blockade, a couple of lies, and an assassination wasn’t a bad trade from their point of view.

The collapse of the Federal leadership may have been a bonus, or It might have been another aim. Who knows. Alexsandr was sure however that they wouldn’t have expected the grandson of Governor Rekish to sweep to power in that vacuum so soon after they’d created it, inadvertently or otherwise.

That was the problem with destablising your neighbours in an effort to seize the initiative. You never knew quite who was going to emerge from the dirtpile with the flag.

“We have opened our borders now, to let other nations share in the prosperity we are creating for our people. We will allow them a taste. We spread our wings over the Multiverse once more, having rectified our problems at home, confident and assured in our national identity...”

There was a cute irony too, in that there was a martyr, unintentionally created by Külmsaari police, that had proved so useful to the Sargossans and their forces of chaos during that skirmish, and now a martyr that they themselves had unintentionally created was now giving them a far harder opposition than any they’d faced before.

Yes, Iversen-Eklund and co had been greedy, complacent, weak, and too busy trying to be everything to everyone. But they’d been happy to work with Sargossa when it was necessary, and they’d never painted them as an ‘enemy without’. Nor had they ever actively sought to end democracy across Valhalla. And that was chilling to Alexsandr.

The Kalten Address.

Alexsandr didn’t even know where Kalten was, and he had the curiously good geography of a footballer. Go south from Aleutia Town and you get to the island of Steffansson. He knew that island well enough. Go south still from there and you reach the island of Kalten. One town, Kalten, and a handful of fishing villages, and a population that had swelled over the past week with Party officials, OO, security forces, and a bare minimum of press.

Why was the Secretary General making big speeches in towns like Kalten, Alexsandr had wondered. Why Aleutia at all? One of the further flung states, and not exactly a big hitter by any metric you chose to measure it against. So why Kalten? And why was he the only person that seemed to be wondering this?

He’d checked back through the biographies. There was no connection between Kalten and Lund at any point. So far as he could tell, he’d never been there before in his life. For a leadership that seemed to value symbolism and appearances above almost everything else, it seemed a bizarre choice.

“For three decades, you, my True Valhallans, have put your trust in me and my Party, and have voted for us to lead this great nation. We came to power thanks to our desire to no longer show weakness to foreign governments, and it was a desire you shared...”

Until, that is, Alexsandr spotted the time it was due to take place. Right at the same time as the Terns were kicking off against Eura.

Well. That changed things.

Suddenly, a bafflingly obscure choice had turned into a worrying obscure choice. There was no prospect now of Alexsandr watching the game. Lund was up to something, trying to hide something in plain sight. You can’t be accused of lying in Polarian politics if you’ve clearly said it somewhere already, right? If nobody notices, if the press don’t report on it strongly for some reason, then somebody else’s problem. Not yours.

So when everyone else in the country was excitedly tuning into the match against Eura, when the Nasjonale was rocking with anticipation ahead of the repeat of the World Cup 66 final, when all eyes were on the capital and all anyone could talk about was whether Miroshnichenko and the Terns could repeat their remarkable result from Brenecia by beating the second seeds as well... the eyes of Alexsandr were on Kalten, The Party, and Lund. What was he up to?

Turned out, trying to get rid of elections altogether.

Almost, at least.

“...who would we be, if we were to then hand back that power to another bunch of weak politicians, happy to let the other nations of Rushmore walk all over us, and take what they see fit from the waters of Oygruppen?”

Alexsandr was still running the speech through in his mind. What had he actually said. Elections had been a shame for decades now, that was an open secret. But a population that was scared to speak up, and the systematic destruction of any cross-Federation party that would have had the power to form a government had meant that opposition was fragmented and broken. Shattered. Piecemeal victories in a handful of token locations were ceded to parties in order to give the illusion of free will, but that was it. Election after election, overwhelming victories were recorded for Åskskur, and the continued presence of Lund as Secretary General. To oust them from power would take three things, first and foremost. One, an unholy coalition of political parties across the Federation, the likes of which not even ‘traditional’ Polarian politics had ever seen. Two, free and fair elections. And three, the people to come to their senses and realise that things actually weren’t as good as claimed, and that they could have a different future if they wanted one.

Which pretty much ruled it out.

So then, what was this speech all about?

Alexsandr thought back to the speech. Lund was a younger man than Alexsandr, but not by that much, and he understood that look. There was a glint in those eyes that Alexsandr recognised in his own face when he looked in the mirror most mornings. The recognition of one’s own mortality. Or at least, that your presence at the top table of current affairs was no longer a given.

“...I have no intention to retire, my friends. I have no intention to wind down, or to let everything we’ve built fall into the hands of those who would squander it.”

Without Lund, what would happen? It was a question that Alexsandr and his friends has asked many a time, back when political change seemed possible, and the people were still half-minded to rally behind an international football player that moved into politics. Stranger things had happened before, and he was a beloved and household name. Ultimately, though, they hadn’t been able to come up with a satisfactory answer to that question. If they managed to force Lund out, surely some other head would crop up that could be just as bad. Better the devil you know? The more hot headed members of the group had even mentioned more radical means at one point, but Alexsandr was loathe to do what Sargossa had done and create a martyr. That was back when change seemed possible, though. Back when you genuinely believed a majority of the people were voting for this shower of nationalists, rather than just a strong and vocal minority that had bullied their way to power, and that if you could just make them see another way was possible, then you’d be able to change things.

So much for that.

The group had drifted apart, and tighter grips had been placed on Alexsandr. More or less under house arrest now, he’d all but given up until he’d heard the news about the Terns.

Football? International football?

Not only that, but a tentative lowering of the borders as well?

What was going on?!

“Never again will Valhallan land fall into the hands of foreign powers. Never again will we allow our nation to be led, rudderless, in circles. Never again will I allow someone I do not approve of to make a mess of your business.”

His mind had started to race. Was the economy in an even worse state than was feared? The official line so far from The Party was that the Multiverse was in dire need of seeing the might of Valhalla. But if you believed that... Briefly, he’d wondered if this all meant Lund was preparing to go slower in his old age, to relax things now he’d had this three decades of fun.

The Kalten Address put paid to that idea.

No, reading between the lines, things were possibly about to get worse. Alexsandr felt a bit hopeless, really. How was he going to be able to affect any change from there? What change was there even left to affect? He was an old, old man now. How much energy did he really have left? How much appetite for a fight?

He sighed, as he finally tuned out of his trance to see that Panamer was still one-up. No, wait, two-up. The heroics of Eisenhauer’s last minute winner against Brenecia or Niemi’s last minute equaliser against Eura were not to be repeated today, apparently. Miroshnichenko had just thrown Niemi on as well, in an attempt to see if lightning would strike twice. Alexsandr winced. That was unfortunate. Just as a defensive manager looked to be coming out of his shell, too. That wasn’t going to help things.

The sight of Niemi did make him think, though. Where did the Terns fit into all this? The Party had been unusually keen to push the Terns and international sport as a spectacle. What was the game, there?

That wouldn’t fit into the ‘Valhalla stronk’ narrative, surely. Not yet. The Terns had been isolated for three decades. It would have taken an act of monumental stupidity at the VFA and The Party itself to actually think the Terns would go straight into the international scene and start dominating, surely. So then, why...? He was yet to work it out, him and his remaining associates. And he was even further away from figuring out what he was going to do about it. If anything.

Nonetheless, Niemi offered something valuable to Alexsandr and his associates during the Di Bradini Cup; a glimpse into the way The Party was thinking these days. They’d taken his thumb, surely it was deliberate, because he was making a sign that honoured his hometown of Marylebone. Why was a young man like Niemi such a threat?

Alexsandr picked up his phone. There was a timely text message from the Tramdriver...

>Tramdriver: “Stand by your beds; a young man in Farfadillis has just ruffled some feathers.”

Hm.

Another glimpse behind the curtain?

“Trust in us, my True Valhallans. Continue to place your trust in us, and you will be repaid in strength!”

The final whistle blew in Panamer, but was another battle off the pitch was just starting? The main problem was, one side didn’t even know what game the other was playing, let alone what rulebook they were using...

Will Brianna go quietly?
by Samantha Richardson, Concord Heights Times- Current Events

We would all like to think that everything will go smoothly when the time comes for Princess Brianna to relinquish her control over the northern territory as its governance will officially come out of Concord Heights within a few months. Looking around the mansion that Brianna has made her home in the city of Moreau, you will not see any sense of urgency that there is about to be a major change in how this region is governed. I was asked my some out there to get into why Brianna was given a hold of this region in the first place: was it just to make her happy as a participation trophy for good behavior in the succession debate, or was it seen to be in the best interest of Cassadaigua, as a whole, for a different person to be dealing with the details of building an infrastructure here, while Cassie III could focus on the traditional mainland? Well, the answer is the second part of that. This was never intended to be something that would make Brianna feel good for a little while, but to keep Cassie II from having too much of an influence over this region. There was a lot of concern, some of it very legitimate, that Cassie II was not making the right decisions in regards to this area as she began to enter the early stages of dementia. While Cassie III was now the Queen, the Royal Court did not want her mother potentially having a say in what happened in the region, so control was given to Brianna.

But, eventually, if the Northern Territory is going to feel like part of Cassadaigua more than just on a road map, the land needs to be run by Cassie III, at least as the final decision maker.
We know that the royal family will formally have different people making smaller decisions in different regions of the country, but the Queen always has the final say. In the North, for the last five years (and we're in the sixth year right now, approaching the deadline), Brianna has not had to run anything by Cassie III: all decisions were hers, exclusively. Some feared that this could be the recipe for a civil war: would Brianna do everything in her power to resist the wishes of the court and fail to relinquish power? We may not be at that point yet to where we can officially say that she will not, but if you take a trip to Moreau or any of the other cities that are growing in the North, especially along the Highway 11 corridor, you will not see any signs, whatsoever, that Brianna is preparing some form of massive resistance. She has, in fact, done a very good job, and has received praise from Cassie III for the way that things have been handled. All of the signs point to this being a very smooth transition, so if people are hoping for drama in regards to this, they may end up disappointed.

However, like I said, we're not there yet, and Brianna does not have to plan massive resistance. If she wanted to challenge the legality of it, then perhaps she will, but there's not really anything that can be challenged right now as things are pretty cut and dry in as far as what the royal decree was from the court. She could, perhaps, try to win over the minds of the people, and have them protest officially becoming under rule out of Concord Heights, instead of Moreau, but if that were to happen, then wouldn't it already be starting to form? The end result of this figures to be that Brianna accepts the wishes of the court, but is still given the right to oversee the land, just not with final say on matters. It couldn't all be resolved that quickly, though, could it? It does seem a little too good to be true, especially when we're talking about someone who took a protest all the way to the Royal Court as to whether or not they were the rightful next in line to become the Queen. We're not officially at the deadline point yet, but it's getting closer on the calendar.

As an aside, I was asked by an international reader (and we're always glad to have those from other nations being readers of the Concord Heights Times), who is next in line to the throne, right now? Is it Brianna, if something were to happen to Cassie III? Surely Cassie III's oldest daughter, eight year old Callie* will be next in line, but right now? Obviously, not. Would it be her husband, Daniel? Male Equality Now (MEN) will say, yes, it definitely should be, but he is not, either. Right now, and until Callie turns eighteen, the answer to that is Princess Chelsea, the third of the four children of Cassie II. This is more than just respected by Brianna, as in fact, she has always had an especially close relationship with Chelsea.

*- OOC: Yes, this is the first time I have ever mentioned Callie, and Cassie III having any children. Everyone wave to Callie and wish her a happy welcome to the royal family! Slipped my mind, and Cassie III needs kids.

A dud, and a nice win,
by Caitlyn Dufresne, Concord Heights Times

We really have to get rid of these stinkers. The way some of the other early results out of Group 11 were, and with the Fillies having a tough early schedule, things were looking pretty promising for the pink and black. They would then rout Olastor, and we'll talk about that one, before heading to the nation of Yakk. On the opening matchday, the draw between Yakk and Nephara caught our attention, and then our win over the Cormorants started to get us excited that it may not be a stretch for us to come out on top in the group. Then, Yakk happened. With Cassadaigua losing 2-0 to Yakk, that excitement will level off, and some wonder, how good is Yakk, though? The Yakkians, ranked #116 before the tournament started, have managed four points against us and Nephara. They also lost 1-0 to Olastor. So, in regards to them, we shall see, but that group has plenty of reason to be excited in the early stages of the tournament.

First things first, and that is the game against Olastor. A 6-3 win for the Fillies that saw the team jump out to a 3-0 lead before the match was a half hour in, thanks to goals by Lauren Engle (14'), Chloe Anderson (18'), and Chloe again (25'). Those who showed up to watch the match in Olastor (it wasn't the largest of crowds) were quiet, but suddenly came to life when their heroes got goals in the 36th and 40th minute, as for some reason, Cassadaigua fell asleep defensively. No, I don't mean that in the Igrene Cantor manner, but it was a sudden collapse for a team that was dominant early on.

The situation did not immediately get better, either, in half number two, as the home side tied the match in the 49th. That is when we saw Chen Huikang get about as animated as we have seen him with this team (the Yakk game hadn't happened yet), and the team responded. Lexi McGregor restored the Fillies lead in the 56th, and the team was able to pull away late thanks to a goal by Shannon Cunningham in the 71st, and Rachel Boldin in the 89th. Boldin replaced Chloe Anderson in the 77th. More detailed and descriptive summaries of the goals, and other plays throughout this game are available on our website as well as on our app.

It was a good match, but for some reason that team fell flat on their face in New Lakeland against Yakk. Quite literally, I have nothing good to report with this match, as the passing was not crisp, and everyone in the lineup simply seemed sluggish. When that happens, you have to credit the opponent, so kudos to Yakkian manager Richard Prestintino on creating a gameplan that stifled our team and made them look that way. It's a shame that goalkeeper Stacie Thornton, on her home turf in New Lakeland could not have had an easier go of it, and she did a very good job keeping this game close. After all, it was 1-0 as late as the 80th minute, keeping us in a position to possibly steal a point that we didn't deserve. Chen Huikang made some late substitutions which made sense on paper, but did not get the results. End result: an ugly 2-0 loss.

Games like this will happen to just about everyone, but when they happen so early, you lose your mulligan for the rest of the tournament. One thing my mother used to always say that you can forgive one terrible effort over a long campaign World Cup qualifying campaign, and as long as that is it, you should still be okay and may still win the group. When they start to become a trend, then that is when they hurt the most. So, perhaps this will be the mulligan. Maybe Yakk will be a stronger contender in qualifying then everyone thought they would be, as once again, don't forget that they've also drawn with Nephara. For now, it will sting, but the page needs to turn quickly to Ascvalion, and getting three points there, then we can enjoy our bye week a little more.

Estadio da Esperança, Rigente, HUElavia

Gold

The Story of HUElavia's run in IAC 15.

Part 3

Leonardo Conavacio: "Good afternoon everyone. I thank you all for tuning in and I am proud to announce my selection for this tournament. If you look over here, I will flip each of these cards to reveal each player. At the end, this is a gamble selecting these players, but I have faith in them to bring glory to this beautiful nation. Without further ado, let us begin."

David Navarro-Hamada: "I remember feeling nervous when the announcement came for the squad announcement. I remember hearing news on how I was projected to be one of the players to be selected into the final squad, and back as a teenager, I did feel nervous on my first major tournament for the senior team would come in the IAC."

LC: "Your goalkeepers will be: Lucas Lettman, Eva Petit, and Ignacio Casillas."

Lucas Lettmann: "I felt happy to be representing the team as one of the goalkeepers. Petit was pretty talented and she earned her right to be on the team, Casillas was looking to be a really good player and I remember people touted him as my successor, which I was glad to take him under my wing. But, most of all, I knew I'd end up being the starting goalie for HUElavia."

LC: "Your defenders will be: Juan Domingo Lavezzi, Julieta Higashi Fernandes, Murilo Luz Vargas, Ainhoa Mitarte, Benito Larrangoz, Claudia Regnard, Llanke Pillpe Amaru, and Patrizio Ardance."

Julieta Higashi Fernandez: "I was with my family, and my parents and partner hugged me, all while my phone started blowing up with other relatives and friends congratulating me for making the squad, especially with notable changes done to the defense compared to the ones who played in IAC 14."

LC: "Your midfielders will be: Teresa Font, Flora Brousseau, David Navarro-Hamada, Lucas Noffke, Rafael Mayordomo, and Lourdes Simsuangco Duarte."

DNH: "I could not believe when I was called up to the final squad for the tournament. My dad had a proud smile on his face, my mother was smiling with tears in her eyes. Both of them were genuinely happy and proud of me, and I knew I would be the one picking up their legacy to do well with the National Team and possibly win that elusive tournament."

LC: "Finally, your attackers will be: Ringo Honda, Raul Nascimento Jardim, Iskay Chanca Caipa, Tae-Hyun Yom, Rafaela Lópes Lemos, and Gonzalo Balderas."

Ringo Honda: "I knew I would end up on the team when the announcement was coming. I was coming off a solid season in the HUElavian league and I knew I was likely to be the captain for the team. I was ready to take on that responsibility."

LC: "Congratulations to all of you who have been selected and in the next few days, we will be reaching out to organize your arrival to the Sporting Complex to commence training for the tournament. To all HUElavians, we hope to make this a memorable tournament and to win this tournament right in our stadium."

LC: "I felt very confident with my selection for IAC 15. I wanted players who were veterans and also players that were young and promising. In particular, the defense was overhauled to bring new players in, especially after the humiliation we suffered against Eshialand in the previous edition. I felt this was a roster that the country could back throughout the near two months the tournament would take place in."

Two weeks before the opening match...

*Players begin to arrive, waving to cameras, giving greetings*

DNH: "I remember feeling this rush of excitement when I arrived to the National Training Facility, where the team would be concentrated at throughout the tournament. Essentially, this was home for what could be nearly two months."

RH: "I remember being among the first ones to arrive there, and everyone was friendly with each other, some of the more novice players were awe-struck with being part of this team and we just had this sort of chemistry to look forward to during training and our matches. This really felt the start of something special."

JHF: "Training was pretty harsh, but we had to be on our best shape and quality, especially since we were playing our group stage games at home in Estadio Nacional. We just had to give the fans a memorable performance."

To be continued...

The Overlap - Main Podcast

John Wood: "Porras' Proteges capitulate, Grosso gets carded and madness on the streets of Mosfleet. All of this AND more on today's Overlap Elmyia-Cast.

Well hello listener. With the first international break over we've seen protests, moments of triumph and two shocking defeats. All in a day's work for this Elmyia side. Joining me are chief Overlap tactics writer Iain McLeod, hello Iain, how are you?"

"Hello John, I'm well, football aside"

"Haha well that might well go for all of us. Also joining us, it's only Overlap senior correspondent Giuseppe Travelli, qui ti do?"

"mi do buen John, unlike some of our footballers."

"Yes, well, perhaps we should get straight into that. But first a recap for listeners. Elmyia's World Cup Qualifying Campaign kicked off at Tollington Park last week, Elmyia conspiring to go from 1-0 down to losing 5-2. Hopes picked back up as a superlative performance from Ian Garavakos aided Elmyia to a 2-1 win over 5 TIMES World champions the Holy Empire, before a solid two-all draw with top seeds Pemecutan raised the spirits amid protests in Mosfleet. But, all this went straight out the window, as Gyatso-Kai steamrollered Elmyia in the first 20 minutes to go three nil up. Amidst all this, Elmyia have picked up 3 red cards, 1 freak injury and 0 goals so far for Jackie Froggatt and Gina Whittingham. So, Iain, we'll start with you. With these results, is the campaign over already?"

"Well by the numbers probably not. Anything over 2 points a game keeps you in contention for the play-offs, so they'll likely need 36 points from the remaining 16, which isn't impossible. What I would have doubts over is whether they can pick those points up given how they've played. Being tactically naive hasn't held back Porras before... but when Whittingham and Froggatt have both come off quiet campaigns, the upside just hasn't been there."

"Yes, quiet campaigns as you say, both players have moved abroad of course, has this affected them?"

"Quite possibly you know. I think they both just look less sharp than at the Copa Rushmori. Ultimately this Elmyia team does rely on them for the goals, they have well over 30 between them. Froggatt just doesn't seem to have that ability to go past people or make space for herself like she did before. You worry if it's the start of a long decline."

"Well, of course. Froggatt has been key for Elmyia before, without a goal as you say. But, Rossi has picked up three, so green shoots there?"

Giuseppe: "Yeah, I think Rossi has come into his own here really. In the Eagles Cup you saw him playing for himself more. Before, all the time he's thinking, where's Jackie, where's Gina, how do I get them the ball? But Porras has been good for him in some ways you know, you can see his first thought now is, can I get a goal?"

John: "Rossi of course producing more as you've said, is this linked at all to the other's decline?"

"Not at all, I think you can still see he wants to assist when he can, Galli and Depel or Marakakis, Beresford and Katsouranis are all creator, I wouldn't put it on him."

Iain: "Looking at all the games I'd have to say I agree. It hasn't been that they've lost service here, they just don't look their best. Whittingham seems to be rusty in her shooting more than anything, she's had an xG of 3.25 over these 4 games, but only 1 goal in that time. With Froggatt she's actually just not getting in position to shoot anymore, her's is down below one."

John "And of course these numbers will make for concerning reading for all Elmyia's fans. But, the biggest news story, possibly the level of indiscipline shown. Maria Grosso, now the senior centre-back, you have to say making a hash of some challenges. She left the pitch early twice, in both games she's been involved in. Britonisea saw the back of her after 72 minutes, then on her return against Gyatso-Kai she again went for an early bath just after half-time. Has this impacted results for the side?"

Giuseppe "The thing is, both games, were settled by the time she went off. Britonisea were 4-1 up, Gyatso-Kai 3-0 up. So I don't think you can argue she swung it. However, you have to say we looked a more solid side when she was gone in the other two games. Antonio Silva is young and inexperienced, but if experience makes you defend like Grosso you have to be worried."

John: "Iain, is there any tactical reason it isn't working out for Grosso? Obviously she's looked solid at club level."

Iain: "There's two things really. I think 1, international football is different. Not only is the standard higher, but the referees let less go. I think, especially for the tackle in the Britonisea game, at home she would've either have been yellow carded, or a slower striker would've allowed her to make the tackle. Second thing, she's much better in a back three. She likes to take risks, step out of the line and go at an attacker. With two others shielding her she can do this, right, and have cover. Here, less so, and she ends up stranded too high, and hauling a player down for her first yellow against Gyatso-Kai. Either way, you have to say she's not really learned anything here, which is the much bigger concern."

John: "So, with Grosso out again and struggling, do we expect Silva to stay in the lineup for the foreseeable?"

Giuseppe: "Well, the two things we know about Porras conflict here. One the one hand, he loves bringing these younger, more technical players through, which would point to Silva. But, he loves taking risks, which points to Grosso. I'm hearing it'll be Silva for now, but only Porras knows."

Iain: "Yeah, I'd have to say I'd want to keep Silva in that lineup. In both games he simply looked more composed. But who knows."

John: "Who knows indeeeed. Now, summarising slightly here. Elmyia have conspired to lose to the two teams ranked below them, whilst taking 4 points off the top 2 seeds. Is this down to tactics? Are the side simply turning up for the big games? What gives Giuseppe?"

"Well, I'll leave Iain to answer the tactical side, but I would agree that the performances were miles apart. They just didn't do the basics as well against Britonisea and Gyatso-Kai, it felt a bit like they thought 'oh we'll turn it on in a moment', they were sloppy at times, I thought Galli was uncharacteristically poor. Yeah... a mess"

Iain "Tactically, really I'd agree. The pressing dropped off, and Galli's pass completion dropped off a cliff. I think, really, the problem was they know what Elmyia's tactical plan is, right, they just throw a lot of people forward. There's a lot of space behind that line, you really need either your goalkeeper or defenders to win every duel, or you need the strikers to stick 4+ goals in a game. That's a lot to gamble on."

John "Correct me if I'm wrong Iain, but I sense you're a bit unimpressed with the tactics on show?"

"I think Porras did some things well. Clearly the team have enjoyed how they're being asked to play, you saw the joy in the Copa Rushmori. But yeah, there's really only one plan. There's something to be said for sticking to your approach, but he really doesn't like to change things. Even when they're not working."

"Well, cripes, that is fairly damning. Elmyia will need to see if they can turn it around after the next few games in the domestic season, we're about 9 matchdays in so far to the new season. The Republic of Aiyland will be welcomed to Diepfleet next time around, before a trip to highly rated Yuezhou. Now, protests have continued in Elmyia, there was little disruption to the game itself, but are we expecting more Giuseppe."

"The ball's in the government's court here John. For our international listeners, there's been a spate of protests following the dismissal of a worker at a small ceramics works in Aventi in Mosfleet. The worker alleges, quite credibly, that he has been dismissed on the ground of being homosexual, many people are up in arms, but there remains no protections in law against this kind of dismissal. Now, you'd think the Communist Party taking government would've shifted the dial, but they've been very quiet this week..."

"Interesting, of course you'd expect them to be in favour of more employment protections. So, did these protests affect the football at all?"

"Well there's been protest amongst fan groups, pride flags on the terraces for the first time ever. It's been interesting, and surprising, in a good way, to see from Elmyian fans. Protests haven't affected matches much, away fans should be able to get through wherever they're going unmolested, perhaps staying away from Latin Square."

"OK then. So, looking forward to the next two matches, Iain, what will be key. Will we see any changes for Elmyia?"

"I'm not sure that we will, to be honest. The biggest underperformers are their key players, maybe barring Kit Simmons, and I don't think he'll discount that playing them through to form might pay off. It'd be interesting to see Benedetti get some minutes. He's bagged two goals and two assists coming off the bench, he's in great form for Italia, so maybe he should come into the team."

"Well, thank you Iain, and thank you Giuseppe, because that's all we've got time for. See you next time Elmyia fans."

República Guanacasteca 1-4 Delte
Segmental Paving Specialist & temporary Player-Reporter Cerril Nysald in Tibás, Guanacasteca for Plemon's Almanac
I've been briefed not to dwell overly long on the finer details of our match but suffice it to say the Away Team Mission caught a little more luck again as we had to take a guess at where we should be playing this match, guessed wrong, and still won. With no announcements forthcoming on which of the two stadiums would be allocated for the match in this strife-torn country ("my God," said Coach Enor Perro, who flew out to assist the Away Team Mission as his home team were having a bye day, "it's just like Farfadillis, but with more syllables and higher up the mountain," as he ducked a flying brick from a very localised riot. "This lot could start a punch-up in an empty granero!" he added) we went for the place that sounded less incendiary. As we apparently got it wrong and the Pigs didn't turn up - I'm not being funny here, that is what they call themselves - either because they were waiting somewhere else or because they'd all been pulled off the bus by rebel fighters and lined up against a wall somewhere and... well, it doesn't bear thinking about. Anyway, there we were, all warmed up, and the local mayor, perhaps trying to prove that better times are ahead for the Guanacastecans because they really can organise a kick about for the NSWC when they want to, rounded up a few mountain shepherds, put them in light blue and white, and sent them out to play us. They did perfectly well for mountain shepherds, and were certainly more acclimatised to the altitude than we were, but with Enor Perro helping out, they were no match for us butchers, bakers and riverboat-makers (the captain and head coach did point out that it could well have been the actual team, in a dishevelled state from being stood up against a wall and then being recognised at the last minute, perhaps after a couple of defenders had already taken their medicine 'for the glory of the revolution' and were still on the team bus, in the cargo hold, with some roses to help with the smell. "It happens," he told us. And he should know. Working in Farfadillis and all).

I hear the home team took time out from their busy schedule to celebrate us being one of the last seven nations out of one-hundred and sixty somethingorother to retain a one-hundred percent winning record. Which is nice. With a trip to Former World Champions Zwangzug on Monday night however, we certainly won't have that record for much longer.

The Clench
2/6: The Sixth Lord of Days
“I’ll tell it to anyone who’ll listen,” said Emel Radogar, the pub landlord, to no-one in particular, “that Coach Clentin is a genius. One day he’ll be coaching the greatest team on the ringworld to the World Cup title. You mark my words.”

And so on and so forth.

Perhaps the rural Deltic accent is hard to follow, or maybe the slow, deep basso profundo timbre of the Delts who live at such slower life-speed than the rest of the world makes it hard to understand them, I don’t know for sure. But certainly things have been lost in translation from time to time when outsiders come to visit. Like that time when Christine II of Quebec tried to tap up the station master at Oswark for the next train to Marshlock Spa and fell through a portal to the multiverse. Or when Raul Valk, that nice sportswear salesman from Starblaydia, tried to palm the pub landlord off on some Gnejsian observers that time at the Oswark Oval during a test match special and mis-introduced him. Emel had been telling anyone who’d listen about how Coach Someone-Or-Other would something-something-something the something World Cup… Regional Sales Director Valk wasn’t catching half of it and in any case it didn’t sound very likely to him. But Emel had never been very strict about making sure anyone was following - or even listening. He just ploughed on with his theory.

Regional Sales Director Valk was ever such a polite fellow, but even he had his limits. He mostly had come to The Oval to watch some Cracquet on his day off, and too, suspected Emel may have been drunk which wasn’t helping. Percy Skellen had just hit a whopping boundary for Sullenden Parish to the delight of the watching crowd which Regional Sales Director Valk had missed thanks to this fellow who’s title, name and role in life he had barely understood, and he was a bit peeved - uncharacteristically so. At that moment, he decided to palm this droning chap off on the first possible victim. It wasn’t something he was fond of doing, and he didn’t like himself for it, but… it was his day off, after all.

Being something of a celebrity himself in the valley these days, he was fortunate enough to have an executive box at The Oval, and access to the Executive Lounge. And look there! It was only his good friend Imryn Numbrill, of the Oswark Cracquet Club (the OCC) showing round a delegation of VIPs from - well, they looked possibly Gnejsian to the Regional Sales Director. Emel Radogar was droning on at his shoulder when Raul Valk strode up to the party to introduce himself.

“And this is my good friend Emmer Radar-Gah,” said the Regional Sales Director, giving his best attempt at the landlord of the Six of Staves name, “he’s the Sixth Lord of The Days, you know. Emmer, why don’t you tell these chaps what you just explained to me - it’s a fascinating theory.”

Some time ago, or fairly recently. Depends.
Dear Alex,

Jiminy Cracquet!

That’s what they say around here, or at least that’s what I’ve gathered. The language barrier is real, even though they all supposedly speak the Common Tongue. And they do, just differently. Do you remember the old movies? Old, old movies from the 1940’s and 50’s maybe, where everyone speaks really rapidly and high-pitched? It’s like that here, only the other way around. We arrived in this lush valley only two weeks (months?) ago, and it’s been such a vortex of experiences, escapades and just immense explosions of sight, sound, color and every kind of affect you can imagine!

It’s almost like time works differently here, but I suppose that’s what happens when you get caught up in things. You know how I sometimes say that it seems like time moves at the speed of lightning when we’re having fun, and seems to drag along like a depressed snail when we’re bored? Do you recall I said that once, Alex? That insight is proving even more insightful here, but potentially the other way around, or possibly both ways at the same time, if you know what I mean?

You know me, Alex, ever the absentminded one, but this has been exacerbated by all our phones and other electronic devices collectively deciding to go absolutely haywire at the moment we passed some invisible point a way back; I’m completely lost! And it’s like they live life at a different tempo here, where we simultaneously have every second packed with activities but at the same time it feels like hardly any time has gone by. It’s like that joke, do you remember, Alex? With the man that turned his speaker up to eleven. It’s like that, only the other way around.

We’re based in the town of Oswark-upon-Delte, or Oswark for short. It’s upon the river Delte and not Delte itself - even though in a way I suppose it is - and it’s the main settlement of the valley. It is oh so quaint! If you could bottle the essence of Quaintness and sell it, you’d name it Oswark! Or maybe you’d name it Eau de Quaintness, but it would definitely smell of what it’s like to be in Oswark! There’s history here, Alex. Not like some of these places we’ve passed through, where it’s all industrial glass and metal and plastic. There’s ruins of old castles and waterways! Structures harking back to golden days of manufacturing now repurposed, and a market square with both a cinema and and a theatre! Our guides, among others one Aloysius Gortaine from The Delte River Trust (they’re effectively the government, I think), brought us to a riveting production of «The Little Gargoyle Salmon That Could» by The Oswark Fiesta & Revue. M.A.G.I.C.A.L.

There’s museums! We’ve already visited the Uncivil War museum (terrible business) and the Stoic’s museum, and we’ve been promised a tour of the exhibition space at the Brewery Sports & Social Club and The Museum of The River! And the food, Alex! And the ale! A gourmand like yourself would likely die due to an overload of sensory stimulation, or at least constantly be really, really full (and drunk). While we are generously housed at The Governor’s House, it is at Prince Tyrbert, the main hotel in Oswark, that we start our days with their absolute killer breakfast! I realize I reference Death a lot, Alex, and you must forgive me! Know that I only use it as a way of underlining the forceful nature of my experiences.

But if you think we only dwell around Oswark, you are mistaken, Alex! Oh no, we’ve traveled the River Delte and its tributaries up and down! We’ve visited all parish towns, from Deltemouth, Sullenden and Askirk to Ughmirren and Marshlock Spa, each with their own market squares and Stoas (similar to our local Ting). We’ve seen Delte Heron, Two-Tone Trout and Gargoyle Salmon at the Lead Water, soaked in hot springs at the edge of the Garga Marsh, traveled by the old locomotive from Marshlock all the way down to Deltemouth Wash and the Great Big Smite Bay Contamination Memorial Museum (terrible business). Even Roger Ulvheim, who has been dreadfully moody our entire trip, seems to have taken a liking to this valley, and I could swear I saw him smiling while he took in the crisp river air just outside of Oughna. «Drag me backwards into the bird’s house,» he exclaimed, which I can only imagine has a positive connotation.

But Alex! I’ve yet to tell you about Cracquet! The very reason we are here: The Oswark Parish vs. Sullenden Parish match, an important fixture in the Parish Championship. With five rounds to a game, and each round fourteen days (weeks?), it is truly what occupies most of our time! Thank Rock for the rest days!

It is a very interesting sport! Our guides, among them one Belda Perkin from The Delte River Trust Sports & Social Club (which is effectively like the Ministry for Sports, I think) and Cracquet Umpire Dibbens, are most attentive and happy to explain the intricacies of the sport.

The game seems to be played with at least two balls, and a minimum of two teams. Each team has between six and eighteen players and the game starts when one player hits the ball with his or her Cracquet-racquet and tries to run to the other end of the court. From what I’ve surmised from observation, and my own understanding of the guide’s introductions, the aim of the game is to collect as many points as possible, and for every time a player runs between the ends of the pitch, the team gets a point. If the player succeeds in hitting the ball over the fence, the team gets four points, and if the ball goes out of bounds, the team gets six points.

There is also something called a "wicket", which is a small stick that stands on the pitch. If a player manages to hit the stick with one of the balls, the player is out and forced to leave the court. The team then loses a player, and must continue the round with a smaller squad. There is also a rule that states that each team can only bat for one hour (day?) at a time per round; if the team is not finished batting after their allotted time frame runs out, the other team wins the round, so there’s always a hectic period of great fun towards the end of these sessions, when the batting team tries to get off the field and the throwing team, or something to that effect, tries to stop them. Isn’t marvelous, Alex? Oh, I almost forgot, there is also potentially a third ball, a small gilded (and possibly be-winged) fellow that’s hiding somewhere out on the field and if you catch it you get 150(!) points and automatically win the game.

Suffice to say, the mental endurance and dexterity needed to properly understand - and truly appreciate - this puzzle of a sport makes it clear it is no old man’s game! Which is ironic, because old men seem to be the top demographic amongst the spectators.

We’ve already seen extended parts of the test match, but Umpire Dibbens has promised that this afternoon (next week?) will likely be extra exciting! And, we’ll be watching it from a VIP lounge of sorts! Can you imagine it, Alex?

Now I must be gone, because the rest of the UIDTSCDIOC are waiting for me over at the Oswark Oval! Trust me when I say, Alex, I am having the time of my life. YOLO.

Yours with love,

Senior Union Games Advisor, Hamilton Stek.

Banijan Radio Commentator on MD5 wrote:It's the 63rd minute here, and the score remains- nil-nil, as it has been from the start. The Kadongo Kamu steamrolled through four overmatched opponents in the first four qualifiers, blasting all of them into the sun. Of course, three triple digit nations and a Starblaydia side that is FAR from the Starblaydia sides of old, one that struck fear into the hearts of opponents everywhere.

But Mytanija- it is where Banija meets its match. Banija's trip to Mytanija during last year's World Cup Qualifying saw the Mytanars upset our nation, 2 goals to 1. It was a tactical masterclass by their manager- and of course, while we won the re-match, our two nations were drawn again against one another. Once again, the stakes are high. Both of our nations came into this game with 12 nations, four wins from four wins- so regardless of what happens here, it seems as if Banija and Mytanija will be competing for spots 1 and 2- and with that, the sole auto-qualification spot from this group into the World Cup Finals.

But look here- a spell of possesion for Banija, just passing it around Mytanija's end. We've got Sergius Atieno with the ball, who passes it on the ground to Wesoloski-Okafor. He's strong enough to hold off the defender draped on his back, but with his back towards goal, what's he going to do... OH MY! He's done the slightest of chips between two defenders, to put Sarafina Ikpeazu through on goal!! The former captain takes a touch, AND BLASTS IT INTO THE TOP CORNER! SHE WENT NEAR POST, THE KEEPER, IN A ONE V. ONE SITUATION, COULD NOT GET THE STOP!! IT'S ONE-NIL TO THE BANIJANS!! Sarafina is sprinting to the corner, pounding her chest!! What a statement goal- now THAT'S why she's on the roster!

Think of what a goal that is- the finish was succinct, of course. But beyond that. Many questioned bringing Ikpeazu on the roster at all. At her age and position, she can no longer be an everyday player across qualifying- and of course, her heir is stunning, Layvin Son-Saka. But the veteran captained her side to a World Cup title- Pam Scott's not going to push her away! But look at her humility. She gave up the captain's armband willingly, and she accepted going to the bench- her start today was her first of the Qualification campaign. A gamble, maybe, by Pam Scott to start her 36 year old winger in the biggest game of the Qualification campaign so far- but these scenes show you clearly how much that has paid off. Score 1 to Pam, and goal #1 to Banija!

Pam Scott just finished talking to the media after the game. It was the first tight game of the campaign- and Sarafina Ikpeazu's goal was the only one of the game, giving the Banijans a 1-0 win. Those were the type of games you needed to last throughout a Qualification campaign- and Pam Scott knew that her squad was capable of them. 15 points from 15 possible, can't ask for much more than that, right?

She had to show off her own tactical abilities, as well. Banija were playing too well to mess around with the formation- but a few changes in the starting XI did the trick against Mytanija. Ikpeazu starting for Dembo Savaneh, for one. Wassa Kah got the start in central midfield as well, over Oguta Achuka- Achuka maybe the better play overall, but Wassa Kah did well in a holding role, protecting the front line. And lastly, having AWO come towards the ball more. He, obviously, was the most dangerous goal-scoring threat in international football- but Pam Scott had wanted to try him more as a facilitator today. And hey- a man famous for going entire seasons without an assist, had the key assist today. His ability to pull defenders could really open up defenses.

She knew that she had accomplished something good today. Opened up potential tactical ideas for future big battles, against nations like Sargossa and the Ochre Islands. Or even future ideas that could be trialed in the World Cup Finals. Why not, eh?

The Kabaka's Press Secretary, at a Royal Briefing

"The Kabaka is happy to announce that the Banijan Royal Armed Forces will participate in training exercises in Cardenao, with our close allies from Cardenao, as well as Quebec & Shingoyreo. This will be a fantastic opportunity to improve our military sharpness and military readiness- showcase what our military can do, as we continue to try and take a leading role in AO affairs. We've always been known as a nation that prefers diplomacy, and that's always been true.

Of course, the exact details of what will be sent over will remain secret- but we can confirm that all three branches of the Banijan military will be present for these exercises. Including, of course, testing out a locally designed aircraft carrier for the very first time.
"

The Kabaka finished watching his press secretary announce Banija's participation in the military exercises. Of course, they were quite late in announcing it to the public- but once the rumors started swirling, it made sense to confirm Banija's participation publicly. It was election season, yes, but the Kabaka was focused on making sure these exercises were a success.

He was particularly interested in the performance of the locally designed aircraft carrier- the first of its kind. Banija had a few in stock, but they were purchased from Siovanija & Teusland, as well as Quebec. Banija had made it more of a priority in recent years to develop its own defense industry, and they had been making serious progress. While the Kabaka would not make it to the exercises in person, he was appointing his oldest daughter, Omugaba Immaculate, as the lead overseer on the Banijan side for these exercises. General James Ijio, the Vice Chairman of the Banijan Joint Chiefs of Staff, would be joining her.

Who knows how things would turn out? He knew this- these could help define the future of Banija and whether they could be considered a rising power, or simply a middle power.

President Muhoozi Kulan, after watching Nyowani Kitara's Matchday 5 win over Darkmania

"Man, at least we actually won a damn game." President Kulan was sitting there, shaking his head. Like the rest of his country, he was a huge fan of this team- always wanted to them to win. But of course, as a politician, in secret, he rooted against them. Why, of course? Because Liang Wei was a committed socialist. Of course, without context, this would seem petty. But Liang Wei was hired for the job by Boaz Akongo(probably one of the last remaining vestiges of his regime) simply because of his credentials, and his impassioned defenses of both the Akongo regime, and Ren Qiang's regime.

Of course, he acutally also turned out to be rather excellent at his day job- managing in international football. It took him three cycles to bring Nyowani Kitara from literally nothing to the World Cup Finals, and of course even has back to back appearances in the knockout stages of the World Cup Finals- including a run to the World Cup Semifinals. From a footballing standpoint, Liang Wei was untouchable. Even with this bad start(how does a Pot 1 take 4 games to finally earn win #1 in World Cup Qualifying??), he was still largely untouchable. It would take something disastrous, like missing the World Cup altogether, for President Kulan to have the ammo to rid the KWFA of all those Akongo supporters.

But of course, football was not at the top of his mind- even after watching the game.

What was on the top of his mind, was his election promises. Specifically, those of his coalition partners. Establishing truth & reconciliation commissions to talk about both the rampant human rights abuses of the Akongo "socialist" family dynasty (Zelotes to Boaz to Nafuna), and to, in general, talk about the human rights abuses committed by all sides in the civil war. The problem? They had spent nearly 2 years trying to negotiate with Nafuna Akongo, who of course was the last ruling Akongo. The problem, of course? She was not simply a retired politico- the woman in her mid-20s was the leader of the opposition, and actively wanted his job. It was prepostreous, of course, in his mind- and yet, she did win the civil war.

She had basically been dragging out negotiations for the last two years- and now, had flat out refused to participate in, or support any legislation that would establish a truth & reconciliation commission in Nyowani Kitara. Kulan remembered her exact words to him. "There ain't no way in hell I'm going to support any sort of Commission- the war is over, we need to build up and move on."

But President Kulan also had a directive from his junior coalition partners. "Look, we cannot have peace without justice. Obviously, we're not going to prosecute Nafuna Akongo for the crimes she committed against the people- considering current political realities, both foreign and domestic, that's impossible." The Deputy President had told him. "But we MUST have a truth & reconciliation commisssion. If Nafuna Akongo ever retakes power, via the ballot box, that power will be gone. We must go this route- or we can no longer support this Government."

And that would mean- huzzah, election season. Muhoozi Kulan found himself in a tough spot. Could any sort of truth & reconciliation be true to its aims without the participaton of the perpetrators? But could Nafuna Akongo survive even publicly refusing to participate in such an event? Muhoozi Kulan knew he had a choice to make- and no matter what choice he made, the Civil War would be re-opened...

The Jolliest Roger
Archalit's Biggest Sports Network

The Streak is Over!
Aeragny 2–3 Archalit
Archalit 4–3 Elvatoes

One game away, one game home. On the fourth matchday, Archalit had the pleasure of visiting Centerby Stadion for a major rematch; BoF 80's semifinals would be run-back in a match everyone (who is an Aerá citizen) was excited to watch. I don't want to make any predictions, and I'm very often wrong, but I don't think it'd be a stretch to say that we're seeing something of a rivalry forming. Following it up, Archalit hosted Elvatoes on matchday five in the Archalit Olympic Stadium. The Elvatoes team put up a valiant effort and battled it out to the end, pushing Archalit much further than they had ever expected this match to go.

Now, the last time we saw Airannia in competition, they were leaning on the defensive side, having a stronger defense and a more slow-burn, possession-centric play style. At that same time, our team was extremely aggressive back then and forced Airannia to play fast or not play at all. Unlike then, however, Airannia has moved towards a more aggressive strategy and Archalit has scaled back a lot, balancing defense and offense much more precisely. This relatively drastic change in both teams is what has led to most proponents of the Aerá team to suggest that BoF is no indication of how this match will go. They were certainly right, but not in the way they expected.

Just like last time, Khriss Garyabh came out with blistering speed and took possession early, making a quick one-two pass with Gary Goppré to get around Nyx Phantasma. With a shot on goal that just barely hit the post, the pace was set and the Drills showed that they were serious. The ball continued to change hands but no one could quite finish until thirty minutes had already elapsed. At that moment, August Armburst bolted up the right side and sent a cross over to Lyndon Nightmare. It was Lyndon Nightmare and Gérand Brassa in an aerial duel, and Lyn just got the better of it, sending the ball towards the net with a header that Odês Victorya éys couldn't read in time. Score set 1-0 in Archalit's favor, the momentum carried over to another goal soon after. Bizarrely, the otherwise good tackler Çontre Colminge fouled Cynthia Harmonia just inside the penalty box, the referees awarded a penalty kick to Archalit (inciting outrage from some of the more vocal Aerá fans). Duke Sondas took over the penalty, and sent the ball straight to the top-left corner of the net. A misread from Stergauce ja Dony (subbed in for the penalty) won another goal for Archalit, and half-time ended shortly after with 2-0 in Archalit's favor.

Now Drills fans were frustrated, and the Pirates were set to easily sail to victory. At least, this was Krystol Mays' fantasy of what would happen. Instead, in the 49th minute, the Drills already launched an attack led by the young twenty year-old Mallvau Yekkum éys. He did an incredible job dribbling past the midfielders Terry Yang and Eloria Mizuki and quickly found an open line towards Lio Trofois. He sent the ball towards Trofois who began cautiously advancing to the penalty box. Suddenly, he sent the ball towards Khriss Garyabh who finished the play before Roland Baker could blink. Within literal seconds, the score had been set 2-1 and Airannia was starting the comeback. Not even ten minutes had passed before another play resulted in Lio Trofois winning a corner kick from the left-side. With Khriss Garyabh subbed out for Colman Umuitau (in a shocking move by Azayo jCarvên for obvious reasons), Trofois confidently sent a cross to his teammate who easily beat Myst Magica in the air and scored the equalizer Roland Baker's outstretched hand.

Now the entire stadium was tense. Time ticked by until just ten minutes remained, and neither time was able to get an advantage. It took a dream shot for Archalit to win this game, but it's exactly what they got from none other than Rayth Lionheart. The thirty-two year-old was determined, and had the dream in his head to score, right here, right now, and win the game for Archalit. You know what, this man turned his dream into reality. With possession on the 86th minute, Lionheart boldly hit a powerful kick well outside the penalty box, and the ball flew a distance. The defenders too slow, and Stergauce ja Dony barely missing the ball, Rayth Lionheart scored the winning goal and celebrated like it was the greatest play ever made. The time fizzled out and the Drills couldn't quite find another equalizer. Thus, it's victory for Archalit once again.

Meanwhile, matchday five was somehow both closer and less intense. Elvatoes managed to shock the stadium and scored two goals outright in the tenth and twelfth minutes while the Pirates had their guard down. "No more mister nice guy," Lyndon Nightmare thought, who proceeded to open up a can of Nightmare-fu, scoring a hat trick before the first half. Seriously, even though Elvatoes was finding goal-scoring opportunities left-and-right, it always looked like the Archalitian players were confident, and that they were in the drivers seat the whole game. Still, Elvatoes found the equalizer in the second half, but Duke Sondas managed to score right back two minutes later. From there, Archalit played a defensive game and easily kept possession from Elvatoes to coast to the finish. I mean it when I say this game was less intense, as aside from seven goals and some really good play by Elvatoes, Archalit was never really in danger that whole match like they were against Airannia.

What's to Come?
Well, Archalit is tied for third, with Eraman winning by goal difference (because, y'know, Quebec), but that does not mean we'll be able to hold our position for very long. We have a bye on matchday seven, which could very easily spiral into a few teams overtaking us. We need to win on matchday six to hold our advantage and have a shot at maintaining our position. So, who's our opponent for matchday 6? The biggest pushovers in the group, Safiloa. There's nothing to talk about, this team doesn't exist. Safiloa has one draw, and do you wanna know who that's against? That's right, f*ckin Elvatoes. Now, I don't want to be too harsh, they did what we couldn't and actually scored against the Independent Athletes from Quebec, but do we really think that Quebec was trying to win that game? Come on, there is very little chance we lose this game.

Who even plays for this team? They literally have never published a roster and they have about as many fans as players. It's like a nation registers their national football team to the BoF before they've figured out what football is. But let's give them the benefit of the doubt, how did they do in the BoF? This is their debut season after all. And the result is... They didn't. Safiloa has done three things, sign up for BCC5 and sign up for WC93 and WC94. This isn't even a debut team. Someone's gotta retire if we lose to this team, so for the love of god,
SAIL PIRATES, SAIL!

Princess Stella Annabelle Dallas (naked) with young maid Annabelle Dallas (who looks like a younger Princess Stella) at Dazza Dallas Stadium ...

Stella:
Hello, this is Princess Stella Annabelle Dallas once again reporting on the World Cup 94 for Naked News Jeruselem! We're here at Dazza Dallas Stadium for the 5th round of the World Cup 94 qualification. Anyone paying any attention would know we didn't have broadcast for round 4 because we had a bye. I'm with my maid Annabelle, yes that Annabelle. She also helps mind my kids.

Annabelle: Oh hello everyone
Stella: Oh yes, she's working today as well. Someone has to keep an eye on my annoying kids.
Annabelle: Doesn't help if the Mum is just as annoying
Stella: Anyway, she's here with us to watch the World Cup game today. No, she's not an actor.
Annabelle: She's the real actress ...

Stella:
I guess people say that a lot, but now let's get on with show!
As I mentioned earlier, round 4 was the time Jeruselem had the bye so we had to watch other teams in Group 2.
Saying all that, the last round didn't really change much with usual suspects doing their thing.
Naixi was at home and the visiting Cherven Cities had no luck getting any points. Naixi won 3-0.
Mameath won 1-0 against Greater Cebu at home.
Pyazhnaya at home fell to Darmen 2-1. Darmen scored more than one goal in this game ... YAY
Huayramarca were back home and Sannyamathland didn't really want to be there as they lost 6-2.
Ko-oren showed the Cardinals from Ile de Richelieu who was boss winning 2-0 at home.
Yeah, round 4 went to script mostly.

Annabelle: I did get some time off since she was back home
Stella: You'll have to wait a while for the next bye
Annabelle: Yeah I know
Stella: We're training her so she can manager her own kids
Annabelle: That's perfectly normal in the Dallas family

Stella:
Now, this round Jeruselem was back and the visitors were Naixi who were yet to lose a game.
Jeruselem were also yet to lose a game as well. Huayramarca was other team without a loss.
In the other Group 2 games, well some surprises but not real shocker.
Ile de Richelieu had the bye today.
Sannyamathland back at home after their recent loss to Huayramarca.
Except the visitors were Ko-oren ... who beat them 3-1. Yeah, not having the best time at the moment.
Darmen at home off a recent win but ... had to host top seed Huayramarca.
There was good news, Darmen scored 3 GOALS! Huayramarca also scored 3 goals so they wouldn't be complaining too nuch about that draw.
Greater Cebu picked up a 2nd win this time at home, beating Pyazhnaya 2-1.
The Cherven Cities still have no points, losing to Mameath 1-0 at home.
So that leaves just the game here. You can tell them what happened here Annabelle.

Annabelle: Oh we had one of them scoreless draws.

Stella:
Yes, NIL ALL was final score with Naizi determined not to lose.
Naixi are nation from the famous Rushmore region.
Just name indicates it is an Asian nation and it was.
Jeruselem doesn't handle super-defensive teams well ... and Naixi is one of super-defensive teams.
In fact, they are so good at defending they were the only team NOT to concede any goals in Group 2 so far.
So Jeruselem did not manage break their defenses, like the other teams.
They didn't manage to score any goals either.
That leaves both teams undefeated, still.

Annabelle: I guess for a super-defensive team, them scoring 9 goals is great.
Stella: I guess they didn't break down our defenses as well.
Annabelle: A frustrating game for both teams
Stella: Actually, Group 2 isn't known for scoring lots of goals anyway.
Annabelle: So a good or bad result?
Stella: Not bad but a 1-0 win would have been nice. We could have lost this one as well.

Annabelle: It was a close game
Stella: I guess it was better than losing
Annabelle: Things could have been worse

Stella:
Well, the Group 2 table has The Cherven Cities still on zero points. Sannyamathland still winless on 1 point. Pyazhnaya 9th with 3 points.
Darmen, Ile de Richelieu and Greater Cebu all on 6 points from 6th to 8th.
Well Mameath hold with with 8 points, they are proving a surprise.
Ko-oren 4th with 8 points. Huayramarca are now 3rd on 10 with jeruselem 2nd on 10.
No, the leader is not a top seed ... it's NAIXI on 11 points!
Naixi ahead of top 3 seeds on the table!
Just to note, they haven't done their bye yet.

Annabelle: what am I doing with these?
Stella: Just show them to the camera. Those are new trading cards we just released.
Annabelle: Oh OK
Stella: We're putting out the first batches of these cards now since we finally got paper supply. Now, there is the Golden one.
Annabelle: They on sale
Stella: Yeah, they are on sale at the Stadium here today. Anyone can buy them, even foreign visitors.

Annabelle: Oh OK
Stella: Oh, children get a discount if they buy them to encourage kids collecting them.
Annabelle: They have QR codes?
Stella: Oh, you can scan QR code and get the profile of the player on the card. That's on our web site.
Annabelle: Can you get them wet?
Stella: I suggest you don't soak them for any time in water ... or get them wet. We decided against making them all plastic.

Annabelle: And the Golden one?
Stella: That's Gold plated metal, anyone who finds that would know it's different. Yes, it's got real Gold.
Annabelle: Cool
Stella: Well, that's it from us. The team is travelling to Mameath next and then back home hosting Pyazhnaya.
Annabelle: I'll just be doing my job
Stella: Nevermind her, she always sounds like her completely bored.

Annabelle: Mum says that
Stella: Anyway, it's time for us to go. Time to get the kids home. Annabelle out!
Annabelle: Err, as she said Annabelle out.
Stella: See ya all later!

Vacationers stuck in traffic, authorities trying to redirect road users

The Département de la Voirie, the government body responsible for most roads in the nation, is trying to limit the influx of users southbound on the A10 highway from Port-la-Ville to Chaville in the Abelanne province. The high flow of traffic of the four lane motorway was stopped as a pileup blocked southbound traffic. What initiated the incident remains uncertain but authorities have released that a man in his forties was admitted to the Chaville Regional Hospital while the other drivers involved suffered no injuries. One eyewitness states that a sportscar cut-off a semi before slamming on the brakes. In an attempt to avoid an accident the truck drive veered to the left, but the sudden change in direction led the vehicle to roll over before, unfortunately collecting another car in the incident. Bystanders helped the victims until authorities arrived but the traffic jam created by the incident will take some time to clear up.

While the Voirie investigates the circumstances of the crash, all traffic in the Chaville direction is recommended to go towards county road 110, but a lot of road users were already passed the last exit. Jérémy Dumas, the traffic management director, and his team of patrolman are working to get a vehicles going again. "Obviously, we want to get every road user to their destination in a timely manner and safely. We have a team working on getting cars turned around and heading towards road 110. We also have a plan to setup a temporary lane on the upcoming northbound side to get traffic going while the investigation and cleanup work gets done".

Irène, a Port-la-Ville resident heading to the Province of Foubrac for the weekend, is one the hundreds a drivers still stuck on the A10. "Some people were saying we could pass on the shoulders but then got turned around by first responders and, with all the lanes taken it's impossible to get turned around and drive back".

Homefield advantage too much to overcome for the Blues

Second Half
No score

The dreams of a draw might have come a few days early as the team's defeat to Ziwana was followed by a draw to Neibeskiya. Weather at the stadium was very foggy and the all white kits of the Neibeskiyan team rendered them a ghost like appearance making it harder for the men and women of the Patriotlandian national team to work out a strategy. Halfway through the first frame, the home team managed to sneak through the defense and float the ball past Lataupe. The thirty-one year old netminder was furious that play was let on in these conditions. "I really could not see anything out there. It's like the whole stadium ceased to exist and then a ball barrelled out of nowhere. Not much I can do".

Veteran forward Lucien Graham would save the day for the Blues with a late equalizer in the first half. While their ghostly qualities made their defense as watertight as a strainer, their looks made it hard to judge things like offsides and fog made going over the touch a frequent occurrence. These factors tolled heavy on the higher ranked Patriotlandians who could not secure a game winning goal and had to settle for a single point.

The Patriotlandians fall short yet again

The second match of the window saw the national team host the second highest ranked team in the group, Valentine Z. A good crowd showed up to Navy Memorial Stadium and their presence was felt as soon as players got onto the pitch. The quality and all out offense of the Valentians was clear from the initial whistle. Grisha Konstantinovich beat Paul Lataupe after prolonged possession and precise passing dissected the Patriotlandian defense. The home team would retaliate on the counter attack with Bertrand Langlais running on the wing before making his way towards the box. A few key passes with the Desrives and Graham opened up enough space for the winger to take a shot on net and put the ball past the keeper. The second half saw Francis Fortinello head in one of the team's rare corners to give the Blues the lead. The exaltation of the fans would be short lived however as Valentine Z would score two unanswered goals to seal the match and walk away with the three points.

Manager Jean Alexandre Carignan expressed concerns with the team's lack of proper clearances in the defensive zone. The issue as been around since the start of the qualifiers and with the team struggling to keep the ball out of their own net, the Patriotlandians sit winless near the bottom of the standings of group 15.

Kharakia Saddened by WC94Q Losses

Previous Matches

Vs Ancherion @ Capitol Stadium, Kharakia City, Kharakia
The Red Wave took out a hit on Ancherion, winning 2-0 to kick off the qualifying campaign, with the highlight being a 35-year old Daniel Demiskus finally achieving a cap. Ryän Piersön-Mïval is apparently giving some other players in Kharakia who aren't on the National Team a look to replace him, and he wanted to give Demiskus a nod before his retirement after the current season. Síer scored his 16th for the team, and Magaiven got his 7th for the NT.
Kharakia 2-0 Ancherion
Fremíer Síer (24), Kebalo Magaiven (87)

Vs Eastfield Lodge @ Tavernia Stadium, Tavernia, Westmeadow Tavern
"Dissapointment" was the word against Eastfield Lodge, an understandable and expected loss, but not scoring a goal did not lessen the anger of fans who traveled such a long distance to see their team play.
Eastfield Lodge 3-0 Kharakia
NO KHARAKIAN SCORERS

Vs Stevencousin @ Capitol Stadium, Kharakia City, Kharakia
Stevencousin was a close game for a while, with Kharakia opening the scoring, but then Stevencousin came back for a 2-1 victory, scoring in minute 77.
Kharakia 1-2 Stevencousin
Ben Polas-Gonzalez (12)

Vs Tumbra, @ Couno Port Stadium, Couno, Tumbra
An absolute demolition of the team, but Polas-Gonzalez got his 10th assist! Perhaps Brian Björn receiving a red card in just the 12th minute made this goalfest for Tumbra, but hopefully we have a better result against them at home later in the campaign.
Tumbra 6-2 Kharakia
Fremíer Síer (pen 27, 41)

Upcoming Matches

Vs Acastanha @ Capitol Stadium, Kharakia City, Kharakia
Vs Carpathia and Ruthenia @ N/L, N/L, Carpathia and Ruthenia

National Team Roster Changes

Vinny Lokast (20, Brusnia United, 0 caps, 0 goals) to replace Harold Hyde (24, Servk Slicers, 2 caps, 1 goal) until further change

Journalist Blurbs

Vinny Lokast being brought into the team to replace Harold Hyde is an interesting decision, we'll see how it plays out. -Jaxon Alivi, KPB

Hopefully the team can pick up their slack over the next two games and bag some points, otherwise, Kharakia might not make it. -Aleks Derev, KPB

Vinny Lokast's call-up is a much needed choice, good on Piersön-Mïval. -Isaac Freda, FreeSports

West Kharakia would've done way better in the qualifiers. This is an embarresment to the whole Kharakian Isles. -Jeremy Fant, WKPB

The beatdown from Tumbra should be met with revenge later on in Kharakia City, especially for the sole game in Holloway Stadium. -Oscar Fanayr, Tol City Times

MD4: Chromatika 1-1 The United States of Devonta
Goal: Howard-Dawes 84'
Starting XI: Sourtois; Paterson - Ansoll - Nodis; Christelle (C) - Ju - Françine-Miklavivec - Womack; Phoen; Oveni - Fucheux.
Substitutes: Iara -> Womack (61'), Zuniga -> Ju (61'), Howard-Dawes (65'), Haitou -> Christelle (72'), Harry -> Ansoll (72')
Summary: A controversial penalty call, some godlike saves by the Devontan keeper and offensive struggles led to a rather dismal performance by the Chromatik bench team as the Anomalies were lucky to escape with a draw at the Umbar Ultima in World Cup Qualifying action. Despite outpossessing the ball by nearly 30% (64% vs 26%), outshooting (13 to 3), and getting fouled more often (4 to 15), it would be a call on the edge of the box against Cylie Nodis that would give the visitors a goal from the Penalty spot on the twelfth minute. "It was borderline," bemoaned Hailee Sourtois after the match, "But the job was still mine to save and I fell short."

The Devontan keeper made ten of their saves in the first half, to no avail. Lev Repin opened up his bench and made four substitutions by the seventy-second minute to bring fresh legs to the forefront as the Chromatik attack came over and over again. In the eighty-fourth, the damage was finally done as Elaine Howard-Dawes headed in a Manda Iara cross to stop the home team from suffering the ultimate humiliation.

Still, it's the second negative result against a far weaker side this campaign; five of first twelve is dismal at best. Drawing to the worst team at home isn't bright by any stretch of the imagination, and Repin's team will need to start putting together better performances or start putting the best XI forward in every game.

MD5: New Dascos 2-5 Chromatika
Goals: Christelle 5', Fucheux 33', 62', Womack 43', Françine-Miklavivec 58'
Starting XI: Sourtois; Paterson - Ansoll - Nodis; Christelle (C) - Ju - Françine-Miklavivec - Womack; Phoen; Oveni - Fucheux.
Substitutes: Muir -> Paterson (53'), Jackson-Jones -> Ansoll (53'), Mixon -> Nodis (53'), Goo -> Ju (73'), Nam -> Fucheux (86')
Summary: After the disappointing result at home, the same Starting XI put together a much more comprehensive performance as three goals before halftime set the tone for the Anomalies to a 5-2 win in New Dascos. Elouan Christelle's corner was a beauty, and then Marie Fucheux and Evin Françine-Miklavivec would both have debut goals in the match, with Fucheux getting a brace. Françine-Miklavivec had two assists along with her goal as the youngster showed some promise, albeit against a weak squad.

The win puts Chromatika back on track, with 8 points in 15; though seven points behind a perfect Tikariot, the campaign is long, and there may be some value to experiencing hurdles early on.

Fortnight 4: vs. Polkopia
Starting XI: Do; Paterson - Jackson-Jones - Nodis; Kruetzberg - Zuniga (C) - Phoen - Ighv; Hauser; Xuen-Zhukov - Howard-Dawes.
Substitutes: GK Kathie Begley, GK Hailee Sourtois, DCR Ami Coulibaly, DC Gwina Ansoll, DCL Twilight Mixon, DC Rowan Harry, WBR Grayson Fillar, WBL Edith Fillar, WBL Ladonna Womack, BWM Mare Si, AP Baillaire Fillar, AM Vasiliy Marten Kuznetsov, CF Candice Delaya, P Sandara Park, SS Krra Oveni
Preview: Eleven team groups call for Byes, and Chromatika will have it after the Polkopia match. The Hive will be buzzing as a hybrid squad takes to the field - a mixture of second and third string players, joined by Do making his first start this campaign. If needed, all three Fillar fielders are on the bench alongside VMK; hopefully, Chromatika won't need them and will cruise to a home victory.

At the first bye during WCQ,the Natanians and Nost national football team made an appearance at an event promoting international cooperation in erradicating adult and infantile analphabecy. The squad posed for pictures and was present on a campaing kickstarted by several organisations who will incentivise teaching of adults, mainly on hinterlands and the field, who did not have the opportunity when younger,as well as making efforts to reduce the rates of early-age school evasion and undiagnosed dyslexia and dyxsgraphia, whilst pressuring governments to improve reading-encouragement programmes.
Manager Johann C. Mureșan-Antonescu commented "It is such a noble cause to spread literacy, and promote education which is a tool to arm oneself intelectually against many threats".
Marcus Caeso Domicianus said of the event "It is of paramount and surmount importance to cultivate the habit of reading into children, and to give the opportunity to every adult who was robbed of this possibility, and who whishes so,to learn to read, giving a better quality of life and means for personnal greatening and to better inform and learn about the society which one leaves into".
After the 1x1 tie, with goals by Sheldon Ubuntu (for Natanians and Nosts) and Toomas Napi (for Xanneria),Natanians and Nosts will face Lozho at Arenă N-City,next matchday.

(OOC: No hard feelings, just making some RP hay from the recent re-sim.)

It was going to be a big day for Marcus Dufresne, it would be his first time ever refereeing a World Cup football match. The news had come as a bit of a surprise, in truth. Marcus wasn’t a referee, had never been a referee and his nation of Genericova had no interest in the sport, to the extent that they didn’t even show the World Cup on the telly. Still, even if it was a peculiar case of mistaken identity, Marcus had been chosen by the committee who choose such things. His mother had raised him to take the opportunities that were made available to him. Plus, he really wanted to be one of those people who liked to travel. He wasn’t, but he thought he probably should be. There was only so much Blandton had to offer. Perhaps a trip to, he checked the letter, Sargossa would spark up something within him? Yes, he would go. But first he’d better pop down to the Blandton library and see if they had anything that might explain the rules of, he checked the letter, association football.

Marcus had to admit, he was glad the committee who choose such things were paying for his travel expenses. After six flights his running total was 24,000 Generi-bucks. Feeling a little guilty, he’d even made the final leg of his very long journey by coach. The few hours spent on the coach, as the urban sprawl of the Sargossan capital of Soluca was left behind to be replaced by the far more pleasant surrounds of Sargossa’s wine country, were further spent deep in his book. As was the evening, after a nice dinner in the hotel and a couple of glasses of a crisp, locally made Chardonnay.

The next day, staring down the barrel of some forty thousand people, Marcus wished he’d another glass of the stuff to hand to settle his nerves. Still, this is why had been selected by the committee who choose such things. Certainly, the uniform he’d been provided with was ill-fitting and his team of assistants seemed a little bemused by his very presence. But his new whistle still had that new whistle sheen and his was ready to do a good job. He said a silent prayer to the gods that he would do a good job.

It was far noisier than he had expected it to be. And faster too. He hadn’t expected all the running around. He did his best but often the events were happening too far away for him to see. Something significant happened towards the end of the match. Something the team in dark blue seem delighted with but the team in green seemed much less delighted with. A number of them had words with Marcus. The noise made it difficult to understand. The language barrier made it slightly more difficult on top of that. Eventually, having been reminded by one of his assistants, Marcus blew three sharp peeps on his whistle. He practised that part a lot, to the extent that the hotel manager had had to have a quiet word. But he did it so well here that a good portion of the crowd roared. What nice people they were. The chaps in green still seemed a little grumpy though. Still, you can’t please everyone.

After a leisurely poke around of the town Marcus started his long trip back home. He was waiting in the departure lounge for the first of several flights. He couldn’t deny a certain sense of pride as, before him on one of the big screens, he could see himself. He was watching highlights of the recent World Cup qualification match between Sargossa and Al-Tamazgha, and there he was, whistle in hand. Then he saw the significant event play out again and something bothered him. The way the ball had clipped the wrist of the chap in blue before he’d hit it into the net thing. Something nagged at the back of his mind. He dug out his library book and thumbed through it. Where was it? Oh yes, a hand ball. Oh no, a hand ball.

“Oh my gods”, he said to no one in particular. “What have I done?”

Wait, the information pack by the committee who choose such things had given him had included a number. He quickly fumbled it into his phone. Eventually a bored sounding voice appeared at the other end.

“Hello, yes?”

“Hello, I’m sorry to disturb you. My name is Marcus Dufresne and I was the re-furry at the World Cup between Sargossa and Al-Tamazgha. I’m afraid there was a problem with the ghoul. There is still a problem with the ghoul.”

“Errr, the ghoul… what?”

After a lengthy back and forth Marcus was finally able to get his point across.

“That’s all well and good”, the voice said eventually. “But you do realise that match was two days ago? Traditionally this decisions are made in the moment.”

“But you can do something about it, can’t you?”

“Fortunately for you Mr Defresne, I’m trying to get fired. So, yes. Yes I can.”

Which is how it came to pass that Sargossa’s 1 – 0 matchday three victory over Al-Tamazgha became a matchday three goalless draw with Al-Tamazgha. How their one hundred percent record became seven points from a possible nine. How top spot in group fourteen became third, or something. How all their World Cup dreams were ruined, probably.

Blah, blah, blah, interest rates. Medina Klose nodded solemnly at all the right times, but really, the Margravine's focus was outward.
It would be inaccurate to say Nephara ran itself these days. More that a bipartisan understanding of stimulus-centred economics and a mutual agreement to kick the national debt down the road indefinitely had ensured that a nation with poor national resources had clawed its way out of the post-industrial malaise and into an era of genuine prosperity. For all the talk of the Nepharan battler, that battler nowadays had ample work opportunities four days a week, the supplement of a generous UBI, access to the fruits of trade deals all across the region and was, in general, doing pretty okay. Which made it hard to continue propping up the national character on themes of triumph against adversity and survival against the odds, but hey.
Point was, the right people were in the right places that economics at home couldn't really be Klose's passion. Her gaze was ever turned outwards. It was her strength (people admired her pull across the region and, in particular, her pivotal role in securing peace in Nyowani Kitara) and her weakness (the protectionist, isolationist impulse that still cut deep in Nephara) at once.
And oh, the cogs whirring in her head... ! It was fascinating to watch the progress of Nyowani Kitara, the anticlimactic political demise of Nafuna Akongo (known as 'Suzi' within Nepharan insider circles, for reasons Klose never actually understood), who was now threatening to make her Lazarus-like return as a thousand promises that seemed really good and convenient at the time came home to roost. Kulan was caught between a rock and a hard place. He'd probably quite like to do the commission. Honestly, he'd probably quite like to put Akongo up against a wall and shoot her. But the nation was a powder keg, and while the fuse was wet, it could yet be dried out and rekindled.
Idly, as it was her nature, Klose wondered how she could shove her finger in the pie. But then, Kulan and his faction had decried Corvistone from the get-go. And, truthfully, Corvistone probably had all it could get from Nyowani Kitara. While it had forcefully maintained a sort of peace, getting its hands dirty in a way no other nation had deigned to, containing the war at the cost of substantial Nepharan blood and reputation, many people had already made up their minds that the Nepharim were just back to their raiding, bloodthirsty ways again, and their further involvement could be no good. Which could well be right in this instance, regardless; certainly, any hint of true Nepharan intervention would be a spark on that fuse.
And while her predecessor-once-removed, the formidable Ulrica Lindt, had reliably forced a tune out of Nafuna Akongo, Klose had barely interacted with her; little hope of them reaching some kind of accord, especially as she had little doubt Akongo would feel Corvistone and Bastion had left her out to dry, subject to the fickle and inconvenient wings of 'democracy'.
No. She would make herself available, if called upon. She did feel a duty to the sprawl, still, and was complicit in its current state, even if hers had, she felt with some confidence, been a positive influence. But for now, she just had to have some faith that the whole affair would work itself out... and that the fledgling democracy would not tear itself apart in the process.

Saint Eleanor 1-1 The Jovannic: Emperors hold on to give Saint Eleanor first dropped points

Following an impressive 2-1 win over 49th ranked Cap Nord, The Jovannic produced yet another resolute performance to come away with a singular point against the unbeaten 34th ranked Saint Eleanor.

Cox once again played the same starting eleven that started both against Saterun and Cap Nord, which was rather questionable given earlier claims of "rotation and experience for the whole squad", although the strong starting performances of the first eleven would have made the decision somewhat more understandable.

Throughout the large majority of the match, the Eleanorians showed exactly what made them such difficult opponents through the first three matchdays, utilising their 4-2-3-1 formation and disciplined passing to great effect. It is well known that Cox likes to play a possession oriented game, but the Eleanorians were more than up to the task of giving the Emperors the task of tackling rather than passing the ball, retaining over 70% of the possession throughout the game.

Even so, The Jovannic showed that they were still very much in the game in the times they did have the ball, breaking fast and trying to use the pace of wingers Barella Lee and Hashan Redder to their advantage.

Jerrett Toi would produce one of his better performances so far this WCQ, saving 6 shots in the first half, including Steve Pilchard's rifling effort in the 21st minute and would have buldged the bottom left corner if Toi did not throw himself downwards in time.

Surprisingly enough, it was the Emperors who scored first, after a huge clearance from Jovannican centreback Fertieas Pasti in the 35th towards the halfway line was nodded behind by a leaping Juyt Dersa. It seemed like Eleanorian centreback Esther Launceston would have been able to clear away any possible danger, if not for the sheer explosive acceleration of Hashan Redder, who swung inside and took the loose ball in stride, racing past Esther Launceston and sidestepping a last ditch tackle by her centreback partner Sam Newbridge. Keeping up his momentum into the final third, he would produce a tidy finish that beat the oncoming John Bailey and nestled itself into the bottom right corner.

The Jovannic were 1-0 up, against all the odds, and Cox immediately tried to shut the game down, as both Twater Harring and Huli Maringar joined Feckhim Tee as Defensive midfielders, and even Juyt Dersa tracked back often to add an ninth man to the defence. This kept the scoreline equal for about 40 minutes, but as the Eleanorian pressure grew, there was bound to be an equaliser sooner or later.

As the 75th minute approached, yet another strategic foul by George Sim, who had been playing some of his bravest defensive football, left Jessica Martin over a free kick from just inside the final third, a few metres away from the box and slightly to the right. She would put in a floating chip into the mixer, and about half a dozen heads rose up to meet it. It wasn't clear who got the touch at the time (later review showed it would be three people, David Newcastle for Saint Eleanor flicked it in the general direction, followed by two deflections from Fertieas Pasti and Twater Harring), but the resulting ball fell, fortuitously for the Eleanorians, to striker Rick Goldsmith, who promptly turned his man and slammed it past Toi to make it 1-1.

Saint Eleanor continued to put constant pressure on the Jovannic defence until the final whistle was blown, and the Emperors just about managed to keep the scoreline equal to gain a hard earned point.

"That was a very solid performance." Cox stated during the after-match interview. "To hold our own against a team who had such a strong start is really commendable, but it's just one result of the many we're going to have to fight for."

The Emperors will next face the Canadian Dominion, who are 123rd in the world and currently sit 9th in the group after an exhilarating 3-3 draw with Saterun.

The Jovannic 1-1 Canadian Dominion: Emperors and Ganders share points after cagey tactical battle, Dersa now 4 for 4 in goals

It was going to be another 1-1 draw for the Emperors as they faced the Ganders of the Canadian Dominion, ranked 123rd in the world.

This would be the first international match held in Chan City, and the Stadium of the Ruby Dragon, popularly known as the Chanfield, would be the stadium hosting it. The second largest stadium in the Jovannic, it is the home stadium of local team Chan City and a must see when touring the city's architectural delights.

Cox made three changes from the team that drew with the Eleanorians, with Ricardo Volota replacing Jewr Clarkey at RB, Neremiah Togr replacing Huli Maringar at CAM and Tan Xiao Wun replacing Barella Lee at LW.

The CD Ganders lined up in a rather aggressive 4-4-2, pushing forward whenever possible. The Jovannic, on the other hand, were content with keeping back and playing around the back, just as long as they had possession. Being pinned back for the majority of the game however found Marimo Skvestky mostly unable to drift into Cox's signature 3-2 structure, instead playing as a more traditional left back for the majority of the game to combat the advances of the Canadian Dominion's wide players.

It was a very equal game throughout, and neither team looked like the clear favourite. Throughout the first half, both sides would get decent opportunities, with the Emperors coming closest with a Maringar free kick that clattered off the right post, but no goal would be scored in the first 45 minutes.

This would change by the 54th minute however, after a spark of brilliance from the so far uninspiring Jovannic midfield which saw the ball pass through 4 Jovannic players vertically upwards within 10 seconds, ending with Neremiah Togr receiving the ball before the Ganders had time to track back from their earlier attack. With only Jax Smith in front of him to worry about, Togr played a simple square pass to Dersa, who fortunately had the pace to skip past Smith from the right side. The Gander centreback did particularly well dealing with the 2v1 situation, predicting the pass and may have very well got enough time to cut off or delay Dersa enough by shepherding him to the far side, if not for the forward from New Hope taking an outrageous attempt at goal with the outside of his left foot from several metres outside the box which even took experienced Gander goalkeeper Tristan Clarke by surprise. Looping high, the shot would dip just enough to slip out of reach of the opposing goalkeeper and make it 1-0 to the Emperors.

Although they were indeed trailing by one, the Ganders had were definitely not going to be pushed over; after all, a difference of 80 ranks was quite a lot. They continued their usual attacking style, while The Jovannic attempted to slow down the pace of the game and reduce the intensity needed. Clear cut chances were few and far between for both sides, but when one finally came to the Canadian Dominion's way, they took it in stride.

The 78th minute saw Isaac Nelson switch the play with a pinpoint cross to his opposite teammate Ryan Hamilton, to wasted no time in running towards his opposing marker Ricardo Volota, who had had a rather difficult time keeping the left mid in check. This time, Volota kept his cool, but was inching back with every step over and feint the Gander midfielder did to pull closer. Now at the edge of the box, Hamilton unleashed a powerful daisy cutter strike that forced Jerrett Toi to make a quick save down at his near post, but would unfortunately be unable to deflect the ball out wide, instead parrying it right in front of himself and allowing the quick thinking Sebastian Colt to pounce on the loose ball, prodding it into the wide open net.

No more goals were scored in this fixture, but the midfield battle between the two sides would be entertaining to watch until the final whistle, even if no team did come out on top, or even if a late chance.

"We haven't been hammered yet. I consider that a good thing." Juyt Dersa would state. "It's good we've been competitive in every match so far, and getting a few goals is always an added bonus."

Cox was rather optimistic about the fixtures ahead. "Juyt's been great, both on and off the pitch. He'll be essential in ensuring we have a chance against the top two seeds of our group."

This could spell bad news to the two reserve strikers of the squad, Shaun Leon and John Crackers, who have so far gotten 0 minutes combined.

The Jovannic will have their work cut out for them though, as they will first face 12th ranked Brenecia in Crown Row before hosting 33rd ranked Eura at the Goldan Spire.

Boot It!: What The Fuck Is Going On?

Postby TJUN-ia » Mon Jul 03, 2023 8:01 am

After back-to-back defeats, the Jaguars of TJUN-ia were now in a situation that they rarely find themselves in - winless after the opening 3 games. We haven't been in this sort of deficit in a long long time and in this regard, both David Seems and Li Xiu Ying absolutely hate this. This is TJUN-ia, a nation that is supposed to be a WCQ contender, not being able to do shit...and it fucking sucks. Many wanted this fact to be changed and fucking quickly...but could it be done?

Up first was the biggest game of this entire campaign as #3 Zwangzug came to the National Stadium in TJUN-ia City in a game both teams were desperate to win. We hadn't won a game and while Kate DiMarini's side was unbeaten entering this game, they were also in chasing mode against some of the surprises in this group. This game was built as one that both teams needed to win...and it showed on the field, with both teams certainly playing nervy and giving their absolute all to the result. Valerie Waugh and Cixin Nguyen certainly came close to taking the lead on several occasions in this contest, but Sputnik Brykilawa and our defensive setup held firm despite everything being thrown at them. Someone had to break through at some point and in the end, that ended up being Malhrani al-Kalhrani in the 78th minute to the roar of the crowd. That would end up being enough to claim our first win of the campaign. One that everyone appreciated fully.

And then we headed to Stadium Biru to take on the Blue Predator of Sharktail, one of the teams that have gotten off to a better start than most would've expected. Sahami certainly has this team playing like worldbeaters at the moment and while that certainly sounded frightening, we were hopeful our turnaround would make the difference...right? The hosts took the lead in the 34th thanks to Razen Saif but we would equalise in the 40th thanks to Jackson Smith-Scott, so things were still looking good. Then the 2nd half arrived, we turned into statues and Sharktail took over - with Wan Nizam getting a 2nd half brace and Win Aziz adding to the icing on the cake. It was awful...and now, we're back to hell.

What the fuck is going on. We can't seem to do shit right now...and no one really knows why.
We will hope, HOPE, that we can beat the Kingdom of Castille at Tallawah Stadium and also the returning Torisakia in New Logan...but yeah. Quarter of the way through and we're P7...and we need something right now. GO JAGS!

Alliance Keeps Republicans From Clobbering At Polls

Image
SCOTT CITY - As the National Labor Party continues to improve its performance at the polls, the four party Alliance for a Presidential Majority (Republican, Liberal, National Patriotic and Civic Democratic) continues to stymie the NLP's ability to actually govern. The NLP's vote share jumped up nearly seven and a half percent and they added 106 municipal councilors to their ranks, but despite all that, the net total of municipal councils under NLP control fell by one to 29 out of 190.

The Alliance's vote share fell by over five percent, with only the Civic Democratic Union making gains vote wise. But despite the loss of support from voters, the Alliance lost control of just three councils, retaining control of 155. The Republicans were responsible for the lion's share of the losses, with 5.7% of their vote share in 2055 being dispersed to rival parties. The Republicans will also have 293 less municipal councilors than they did four years ago, leaving them to rely on the other parties to support their mayoral candidates. Without that support, the Republicans might have suffered even bigger losses in terms of municipal councils under their control.

Perhaps the biggest winners of the election was the Aboriginal Representation Alliance, who dominated to win the three Aboriginal municipalities of Darmen as well as the both reservations. This was not the first time the ARA contested municipal elections, having won a seat on the Ngwane municipal council four years ago, but they were far more organized this time around.

In New Istria, a municipality dominated by the Banijan diaspora, the Christian Patriots' League, an imported party from Banija, has lost control of the municipal council, which will now be led by the Republicans. Rumors abound that Moti Olayinka's party will eventually merge with the Republicans, as the party's efforts to expand beyond New Istria have proved unsuccessful.

Voters will return to the polls in a years time to elect the regional councils of the semi-autonomous regions of Esportivan Darmen and the Southeast, as well as the ten Police and Crime Commissioners in the remaining ten regions. It will be the party's last chance to prepare for the 2061 general election, although the parties in Esportivan Darmen will also contest the Assembly of the Esportivan Union elections a month after the regional council elections in 2060.

THIS MESSAGE IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY: AN ANONYMOUS SOURCE

Since 1984, the Holy Empire of Juvencus has had 1 leading figure that has led the nation through copious advancement the likes of which it had never seen before until that point. Finally, the "isolation" of the more interior regions turned into an open hug for the multiverse to come and invest to. An investment which led to a big success and an even larger population growth. This economic miracle has made the nation one of the most major powers of Sonnel and it has even led to soft form influence of power beyond. To put it shortly, the nation was led to extraordinary advancement and even more extensive unification by a figure that will remain in history as one of the greatest to ever grace the helm. While most people love him, some don't, that is a fact of life not many are willing to admit. This is about his majesty, Nicola II, of the house of Terzi.

There's just not a lot of things you can ask me about this, my how-to's, my whereabouts, or even who I am. This does not matter, for I have information that will matter for all 150 million citizens in the country, plus the 100 million people of Juven descent abroad. It is a set of news that will be devastating and only I can deliver to you for the time being. You see, everything long lasting has to end sometime and this man's leadership will be no more very very soon.

No, there is no coup d'etat in the works, no plans to abdicate and most certainly the mafia is not back in the country and it isn't really planning a return after nearly 100 years in exile to Montagnaverde(where it is true that they control a lot of the media and even several officials) or elsewhere. This is much more grim and even more disappointing about everyone involved. It is about his majesty's health.

For the past 3 years, it is no secret that his public appearances have been drastically reduced and so have his direct executive orders, with his sons taking more and more power as the days pass and he becomes frail and older. What has been a secret for even longer than that is that his majesty has been suffering from a form of cancer, leukemia. At first, he seemed to be recovering extremely quick but suddenly the cancer returned stronger than before and that really has beaten him down.

I have valid information about his situation and this is not a joke nor is it a prank. He is currently approaching the terminal stages of his leukemia, the Palazzo Reale is in a state of shock and panic, mostly because no heir has really been appointed, knowing full well his majesty's got twins as first-borns.

What could bring extra panic to the Palazzo and perhaps wake up the people in these times, is if any of your news outlets have the guts to share this information or believe it is a hoax. His majesty has no more than 2 months left to live and the people deserve to be ready to know about his dire situation early on. If all of you reject this proposal, I always have other ways to share this information in ways the could perhaps give the people more to worry about than to be ready about. This is information good enough to split the nation in two, so you better know the consequences of your choices. I have already informed the Palazzo as well, however they shrugged me off and tried to make me fall back in line. This will not happen.

You have 3 days to post this information, if you do not, I will and be damn sure I will provide evidence not even the Palazzo knows about. Thank you.

Campuan or Campuhan or Campuhan Kingdom (Girinese: Puri Agung Campuan) was an early Sanatana Dharma kingdom, located in Pemecutan main island. It was centered on the confluence of River Pacung and Apuan at the heart of Campuhan Valley, the vast lowland area in the eastern part of Giri Island. The capital is Campuan (or Campuhan) in the present day Campuhan, one of the four city-level districts of Puradhipa, Pemecutan capital. The name of Campuhan is a Girinese word means 'a mixture'. The name is referring to the mixture of two river that crossed the capital city.

The kingdom was established in 532 by Ki Arya Kenceng, a former general and advisor of King Adhiranjam from East Jambuvan Kingdom. He defected from the King and joined a rebellious group led by Ki Dalem Sagening and Ki Panji Jagatsatru. The three of them lead a coup which led to the collapsed of East Jambuvan Kingdom. He established the kingdom in 532 after he and the rebellious group succeed to take over the north and eastern part of Giri Island. He died in 550 after destroying the capital of East Jambuvan Kingdom. His son, Ki Arya Manik replaced him as a king.

Age of Arya Manik (550-598)

Ki Arya Manik was the second king of Campuan. Based on Watulepang Inscription, the time under Ki Arya Manik rule was a peaceful one as the king spreading their influence through trade. The inscription wrote about a ceremony to congratulates Ki Arya Manik for his achievement to expand Campuhan's influence as far as Cendana Islands in the east, Yuhansa Islands to the north and Mitra-Soma twin islands to the west. Their growing influence bring the decline of Sripala Kingdom superiority in the eastern part of the region.

Age of Ki Arya Kubayan (660-688)

Based on Cau Inscription, Ki Arya Kubayan was the sixth king of Campuhan. During his reign, Campuhan reached its peak. The kingdom was not only controlling the whole Giri Island but also its neighboring islands. The inscription also stated that Campuhan was receiving a gift from other petty kingdoms as far as Meilawati in the present day Samudera Darusalam. Campuhan was believed to have a close relationship with the western thalassocracy empire of Meilawati.

Decline

Nyuh Kuning Inscription mentioned about the decline of the kingdom. It was happening during the reigned of Ki Jaya Menala, the 15th King of Campuhan. Based on the the inscription, he was reigned from 784-820 Saka (862-898 AD). During his reigned, the kingdom was losing its eastern realm. While at Giri Island, some of the noblemen were fighting each other. Campuhan also losing their influence in Cendana Islands with the rise of Pejanggik Kingdom in the area.

The kingdom ceased to exist after King Ki Kedaung Kerta (868-898 Caka) had no male heir which led to a succession crisis in the kingdom. The Patih Madya suggested the queen adopt the male child from one of the king’s mistresses. But the Patih Agung rejected the suggestion. The king then decided to marry one of his daughters to a prince of their neighboring kingdom, Mangu. The king suggested a matrilineal marriage, so the dynasty won’t change. And the noblemen agree. With the agreement, the princess was eligible to the throne. However, Nyi Ayu Padmi, the princess, decided to pass the throne to her son after she gave birth to a male child. Her decision was supported by her husband, Ki Alang Abu. The child was named Ki Arya Tegeh and he established a new kingdom named Tegeh Kori Kingdom after the death of his grandfather.

Legacy

The name of Campuhan is preserved until this day. It is use by a Pakraman and a City which is part of Puradhipa, the capital city of Pemecutan. The name is also use as the name of the city's football club, Pescam Campuhan and their headquater, Campuhan Arena. Many buildings in the city use the name of Campuhan such as Ghra Campuhan, a mixed-use building.

Puri Campuhan or Campuhan Castle, the residence of Campuan Monarch is a national treasure. It was burned down after being bombed during the air raid of World War II. The site of the castle was left empty for quite some time as the government divided of what to do with the empty site. After Pemecutan independence in 1686 Pawukon, it was decided to build a new building in the site which will served as the Parliament building of Pemecutan. The name of Puri Campuhan is continuing to use to refer to the building.

Flodden Farm, perched on the hills of the wonderful Sunset Coast, overlooking the Sunset Sea, had only been in the possession of the current occupiers for around 5 and a half years after the previous owner had passed away in Cardenao, a few short months after his wife had popped her clogs as well. The rumours were that he'd died in his sleep lying on a beach, but the farm's new owner knew the truth. The Ochres had been settled long enough now that it was becoming clear to the old guard in Project Alouette who they could trust, so when the farm became vacant it was quietly passed on to Ruby Singsmore, who had been making herself known within the old resistance movement for a good number of years now. Even whilst she was a city-dweller from Bridgdon on the other side of the island, there was enough farming in her ancestral blood to at least qualify her for this without raising too much attention.

Alongside her farming work, she gathered important data for Project Alouette on any comings and goings out at sea which were visible from her farm. There were occasional cargo ships and pleasure boats, but not much else. However, she still attended her chapter's monthly meeting with news to report.

As the Sunset Coast wasn't getting many tourists, despite Ochre efforts, it was easy to find a quiet bar on the seafront.

Ruby found herself sitting at a round table with other younger members. 'It's the clouds' she told them, digging dirt out from under one fingernail with the tip of another. 'They seem to be hanging over the island lower and for longer than usual'. She barely had the time to press her locally grown cider to her lips when a nearby chair was pushed back and its occupant leaned over. 'It's the result of a failed experiment' the female voice near her ear told her. Ruby took a bigger sip of her drink than planned. 'Whose experiment?' 'An ancient one, truth be told to you.' 'Does leadership know?' 'They do. What they'll do is another matter dearie. Oughtn't mess with the Ochrenatiks.'

Separated by Fear

Perhaps these results were a sign from the gods, Haulafo thought, that there should never be a reunion between him and his team... at least, not one on the pitch.

The facts were the facts, they were doing better off without him. Whether it was some sort of blessing from Miss Margaret or Ivan Shakarov genuinely being a better coach than he ever could be, this team was really doing better now. Sure, he also guided the team to a start like this in the previous World Cup Qualifying campaign, but they collapsed under pressure. This team didn't show any signs of that... and they seemed a universe away from the same 23-man squad who shat the bed as hard as they possibly could under his management in CAFA VI.

As for the team, their views on their results were completely different from Haulafo's. When they saw their old manager, they wanted to make him proud. Make him see that the team he left behind still did love him, and wanted to impress him as much as they could. They were doing this for him, but he didn't seem to want to come back, even despite their best attempts to make him see them as a better team than he thought they were.

While 3-2 away against Arjunnagar and 1-0 home against la República Guanacasteca may not have been incredibly flashy results, they kept this Seagulls side undefeated heading into a critical match against 4-0-0 Delte. By all accounts this team should be one that would make Haulafo proud, but he wasn't even stopping to say hi... what were they doing wrong...

What was I doing wrong... Haulafo kept thinking as he stared at the results table. This wasn't the team he coached. Well, they were, but they sure as hell weren't playing like it. Ivan was such a better manager than he... how could he ever even face them?

But in the schedule, he saw his chance. His golden opportunity. After playing Delte, the Seagulls would be taking their off-time to rest and prepare for Zwangzug to come back to town. Maybe then, when they wouldn't be thinking too much about football, or at least trying not to think too much about it, he could talk to them, or even just bring himself to say hello...

Change: Two Decades of International Football in Poafmersia
Part 1

"Daddy, how are these players as compared to your younger self?"

Eight years old Andy Haodao was with his father somewhere in Farfadillis, watching Poafmersia play Farfadillis as Jordan Huerta headed in the winner in the 89th minute to sink the top seeds 3-1. Both Yue managers were standing up in their boxes, but it was two very different looks. To Yuan Zilai, it was a sight of despair, as this meant that Farfadillis would now take an unexpected a loss against the group's third seeds. And if they want to directly book their ticket to Græntfjall and Kelssek for the World Cup 94 Proper, this would be a very huge loss in their chase for the group champions. Its one of those 6-pointers that nobody want to lose, and losing such an early 6-pointer, especially one at home, will never be good for the team's morale early on. For Lu Jialan, it was a totally different mood. Jumping and screaming in joy, he would have ran onto the pitch if the game ended. Jabik Henderson and the bench players was also seen celebrating the goal.

For Joel Haodao, it brought back so many memories of his original self when he was on the field. As the player with most caps and assist for the Poafmersian national team, the former captain of the national team remembers the days when he was on the field, playing as the winger in Tess Bjarnesen's position, and asserting dominance at goal from the sidelines, being that silent assasin who pushes towards goal with his beautiful shots from the sidelines.

"Yes, Andy, daddy was just like all of them when I was young. If anything, they might have had performances better than what I did in the past."

Andy looked at his father. "Really? Will they get to play in the World Cup like you did?"

"This team has all the abilities to do so, I trust them."

Joel Haodao definitely looked amazed with the performance of this team against Farfadillis. He was a bit cautious about bringing his only son to watch this match, but given how hard it was to fight for tickets among the away allocation, he felt it was definitely something that his son should watch. The match turned out as perfect as a storybook - Tessa Bjarnesen got a goal in 7 minutes, heading in from the near corner after Erle Sartini made a cross across the length of the field to reach Bjarnesen. While the opponents scored one back in stoppage time to end the first half 1-1, Nacro Astro got in a perfect goal from a corner taken by Xenophon Robson, and then the last criss-cross pass that produced the winner. It was flawless for a game, much better than the ones Poafmersia played in the World Cup under Joel Haodao. But few would remember those days more than a decade ago. To many younger fans sitting around Joel Haodao in the stands, football as a concept has changed. The early mess of the Premier League has all been forgotten. Now is the structured organisation of the Apex, with its better facilities and organisation. Not to mention how this national team is more organised - statistics now drive team development and training, rather than just "go with the feel" training Adnan Suliaha emphasised early on. The days of football has definitely changed.

PART FOUR: JANA ANUSIC - ONE OF THE BOYS

We’ve run this football blog / online magazine for a few years now and we’ve had contributors from all sorts of backgrounds. Former managers and coaches; scouts; a former player or two. Your man or woman from down the pub, your server at the local restaurant, the kids’ schoolteacher. All sorts of people. We haven’t yet asked any current players to pen an article for us, mostly because they either get advised not to write them or because we don’t want to put them in a difficult position writing about something which could affect their current or future career. We’re good like that. Now, finally, we’re changing that and asking current Mytanija international Jana Anusic to write a series of articles for us because we think it’s important. There are not enough women making it to the Mytanar national team and it’s not because they don’t have the talent for sport. When Jana approached us we thought it was a great opportunity to look into why she, so far, has been the only woman to make it into a Hoops shirt and become one of the boys.

Things ended on a bit of a sour note in college football for me, with that final season at Chromatik State rather fizzling out as a bit of a damp squib. However, I had built enough credit with my performances – particularly in the middle two years at CSU – to have people interested in taking me on in the Red League. This was exactly what I had been looking for when I had been trying to decide where I would study all those years ago, back in school. My time at Chromatik State had been the perfect steppingstone, it had put me in the shop window and my skills did the talking. There would be no invisible barriers in my way like there were in Mytanija, in Chromatik you would get the opportunity as long as you were good enough, whatever your gender.

The way the Chromatik system works is that the professional teams can pick from the best college players each season. Usually, the teams which finish lower get better picks, which meant that the majority of my options were teams in the lower echelon of the Red League table, which was perhaps unsurprising, but I wasn’t overly picky. I had built a decent track record at CSU and that meant there was some demand from ‘weaker’ sides for me to go and help them improve. That worked for me! I wanted to go somewhere that I could play and continue to develop my skills. It wasn’t time to be sniffy over the options which were being presented to me. I had always worked hard to improve, and I believed that if I did that then options at more competitive teams would eventually come around. With that in mind, when the call came in from Z’ai’ai I was actually pretty pleased.

They played at an enormous stadium, with over 100,000 packing in to see them for some matches. They had also recently signed Zlatan Andrijasevic, a striker I remembered watching as a kid, from Atletik Thessia. The latter part was something my Ibon origins could take or leave, but this was a compatriot who had played for the Hoops internationally and I have to admit to being a little starstruck when I first met him. He was no longer in his pomp, the other side of 30, but he was still a wily forward and his career spoke for itself. The media named me as a player to watch for Z’ai’ai, recognising that I had at times had to do too much on my own whilst at CSU. They thought I’d flourish with the better help I’d get in the Red League.

Unfortunately, that help didn’t materialise in my debut campaign. We finished rock bottom of the Red League, winning only four matches all season and needing to play in the relegation play-off against Hanai from the league below. Thankfully we came through that by the tightest of margins, a 0-0 draw over 120 minutes unable to separate the sides, but the lottery of penalties eventually did. I took one and scored, Zlatan took one and scored, in fact, all our takers scored theirs and eventually Hanai missed one. We won 6-5 on penalties and would be playing in the Red League again in the new campaign. There was an enormous sense of relief around the team, albeit tempered with a slight sense of foreboding. We had struggled and next time there would be three direct relegation spots, we might not be so lucky.

And we weren’t. It wasn’t the most conspicuous start to life in professional football, battling down at the bottom of the division and scrapping against relegation. It felt a little Sisyphean during those first two years, we just didn’t have the talent in our squad, but that was something I was well used to from my time at Chromatik State. We were eventually relegated, finishing 18th and five points from safety. We knew we were relegated a week before, but we managed to put a show on for our travelling fans in a 4-3 thriller at Sanar on the last day of the season. I scored the opener. It hurt that we couldn’t keep Z’ai’ai up and I had a great time there, with nothing bad to say about anyone at the club, but I knew I would have to keep moving upwards for the sake of my career. I couldn’t promise to get them back to the Red League, not when I had committed two years to them and hadn’t received much help. I would be on the move again in the summer, Z’ai’ai understood, they just wanted to make sure they got a square deal for me. And I could get onboard with that, at least.

Things have a tendency to move very slowly in the transfer market and then all at once, with things happening very quickly and it feels a little like there’s a moment where it cannot be stopped. It is happening, it is happening now, it is time to get used to it. I wanted to move on, so that feeling was good, but you can imagine how it feels in situations where a player is not as keen to move on. A couple of offers came in and whilst the clubs haggled over the fees, I was looking to see where I could most quickly impact the team and try to catch the eye of the FSM and perhaps get a call-up to the national team. Urrheddiao looked the most appealing. A side which had finished comfortably mid-table the season before and was looking to kick on. They had a few Nepharans in the side, Renira Schanzer up front being a decent striker. It felt like the right environment to help me make that next step.

Once the transfer was agreed, all I had to do was go out and perform and I managed to put in my best individual season since being back at Chromatik State, in my sophomore and junior years. The team finished 12th, around where we were expected to finish, but we had been in contention for an IFCF berth up until the final day of the campaign and just narrowly missed out. I was happy with my contribution; the team was more generally and perhaps most importantly so was Dzvezdan Kitanchev. He had just been made Mytanija coach after the departure of Lev Repin and was putting together his first ever squad for a run at World Cup qualification. Due to my efforts in my first couple of years at Z’ai’ai and then during my third year in the Red League at Urrheddiao, I would be in the squad. The phone call from Dzvezdan is a bit of a blur in my mind, I think all of the hard work and emotion over the years finally found a way out and I basically spent the whole time blubbering down the phone to him. He never held that against me though.

If I got on the pitch, I would be the first woman to play for Mytanija. I had very nearly reached the destination I had dreamt of as a child, but I still felt like I had so far to go in terms of my individual ambitions, in terms of my club career and with what I wanted to achieve with my country. Representation matters, sure, but I wanted to shift the paradigm entirely – so there was still a lot of work to be done. The journey was not yet anywhere near the end.
