The last cycle of World Cup competition saw some of Mertagne's best performances yet, with the team just falling short of making the finals of the competition by way of losing their playoff matchup to Yuezhou, sending them to a Cup of Harmony where they managed to top their group and put in a solid knockout performance, losing to Audioslavia off of the back of a particularly nasty bought of flu and generally being outclassed by one of the multiverse's top teams. This time around, the squad had the potential to move into the World Cup qualifiers with an air of hubris, maturing into a difficult third pot team that would be looking to steal points from the upper echelons of multiversal play. When the group list for the qualifiers was revealed, however, this percieved hubris quickly turned to a bitter regret, as it was revealed that Mertagne would be tangling with some multiversal greats such as ever stalwart allies Tumbra, and the Wanderers of Pasarga.
Once the collective swearing had passed north of the Bekk, Team manager Ázëwyn Fëanáro initiated some spurious spin about ensuring that the squad had the best experience to face off against newcomers and old heads alike, but what to some may seem like a smart idea in retaining the entire squad for another cycle has others calling for Fëanáro's elven head. Mertagne's football talent at the junior levels does exist and is waiting to be released to the rest of the multiverse, but those currently steering the ship believe that at this critical juncture in the growth of the national team, new blood is just too hard to trust to deliver when it matters.
Mertagne's group is sufficiently stacked this cycle, to the point where the average Mertagnian browser of the internet could name every single nation without going "literally who"? A third place finish is expected by the national side, but getting there will be hard considering the calibre of the competition. Current expectations are for Tumbra and Pasarga to duel for the top of the table, with Mertagne fighting for third place a way behind. However, some lucky games for the Green Goblins and a spate of bad luck for the Eagles or the Wanderers could mean that the battle is closer than many will expect.
The current incarnation of the Mertagnian national team is still perfectly happy to focus on their 'pre-football' style of play, which focuses on nailing the fundamentals of the game each and every time, and simply scoring more goals than the opponent and keeping a lead. Set pieces aim to be rarely given, and this is a Mertagne side that looks to only concede should the opponent mount a solid offensive push up the pitch. The aim of the squad is to completely block out any kind of sh*thousery from the team or the opponent, and show off solely through effective crosses, well placed shots, and the odd corner kick. This squad in particular has been drilled in finishing off set pieces, which is something that Mertagne has sorely lacked in recent cycles. Of course, half the squad like to flaunt this instruction in some way or another, and therefore the way Mertagne purport to play on paper and practically play on the pitch are presumably per contra.
Should you play Mertagne at our home this cycle, you will be treated to a match in one of the following stadiums:
Dannin City Stadium, Dannin (Capacity: 85,750)
Dannin City Stadium sits in the heart of Mertagne's capital, and its unique look ensures that it's both an art piece, a functional stadium, and an eco-friendly statement all at once due to its assortment of solar panels, which wax and wane with the passing of the sun - an event that happens on occasion here in the wetlands. Home to top-tier domestic team Century Mertagne, the patriotic lime and dark green seating is sure to excite any nation that comes to play here. The stadium, shaped like a question mark or a tadpole(?), with its tail end facing south, also boasts an entertainment complex and is a hub venue for the local community.
The Dannin City Stadium will host matches against Pasarga and Acastanha.
Brandistock Football Campus*, Brandistock, Bardiche (Capacity: 81,600)
*Called the INDOMITABLE ARENA for sponsorship purposes.
The centre of Mertagne's new 'football campus' located just outside the city of Brandistock, on the shores of Mertagne's Lake Shoda, this purpose built stadium sits adjacent to a complex containing the offices of the CAFA, the FMF, and a new purpose built training facility for the sport's current and future talent. Located in a beautiful green park on the shores of the lake, the stadium's striking architecture means its bowl-shaped profile dominates the landscape.
The Brandistock Football Campus will host matches against Tumbra, Eastfield Lodge, and Ancherion.
Nine Star Arch, Webster, The Forkelands (Capacity: 66,500)
The Nine Star Arch is an imposing sports stadium found in the city of Webster, and is home to a source of national pride - the fierce domestic football club FMFC Ninestar. The nine large spotlights that adorn the Nine Star Arch’s titular arch have many uses; two of them during games played at this stadium are to spin and provide a light show whenever a team scores, and to provide those living in and around the city of Webster with a live score graphic, with a number of lights on opposing ends of the arch lit with the corresponding team’s home colour depending on how many goals they have scored. Many teams that play here have the dream to 'capture the arch', which is achieved by scoring more than five goals in a game, so that a majority of the nine lights on the arch are in your team's colours. The national team of Bollonich was the first international team to ‘capture the arch’, with an 8-2 victory over Gortolekua in the 83rd Cup of Harmony. Could your team be the second team to accomplish this feat?
The Nine Star Arch will host matches against Stevencousin, Carpathia and Ruthenia, and Brusseldorf.
Box 2 Box Ballstadion, Keers, Plitterland (Capacity, 44,500)
A brand new stadium built on the site of the Former Keers Dock Pitch, the Box 2 Box Ballstadion is unique in that it incorporates a new eco-friendly design that harkens back to the land's heritage as an active port. The stadium is constructed from nearly one thousand shipping containers of various painted designs, surrounded by a recycled metal frame in a modular design to allow for expansion and contraction as necessary. Currently, while the stadium is designed to be dismantlable, the stadium is intended to be permanent feature to the Keers cityscape for the foreseeable future, with the possibility that the stadium in its entirety can be 'rented' and physically shipped to other nations that lack national infrastructure to host their own tournaments. The stadium's proximity to Mertagne's largest shipping port at Keers facilitates this easily, with marketing material claiming the entire stadium can be dismantled and placed on a single supercontainer ship within a fortnight.
The Box 2 Box Ballstadion will host matches against Kharakia and United Hawkland.
