Kirby looks towards his future
Scott McCrae
The Mail on Sunday Chief Soccer Writer

It has always been a running joke among the coaches at the FAC Development Charter Center that the closer one lived to Birkenfeld in Prince Regent's Charter Township, the greater the insecurity one felt about their job.

The exception that somehow made the joke funnier was Darren Kirby, who lives northwest of the town, about a 20 minute drive from the facility; many late night meetings of the National Team coaching staff took place around the kitchen table in the home he's shared with wife Abby and their 3 children--Eliza, Stefan & David--since his first time as Under-18 Manager for SWC 8.

The Kirby clan have just resumed residence in the family home after a lengthy absence that saw them embark on a whirlwind tour of the Commonwealth, Banija, Vilita, and Milchama.

We are seated in the Cobalt Dining Room at Parliament House in Belle Haven courtesy of arrangements made by his sister Daphne, Deputy to the Clerk of the Council of State.

SM: "This is definitely the most elegant locale I've ever conducted an interview in."
DK: "I wasn't going to meet you at some seedy pub in Riverside like Jen did. (laughs) I like to think I have slightly better taste."
SM: "Your sister is older by how many years?
DK: "Three and a bit. I've never been ashamed to say I looked up to her a lot growing up because she was really brilliant. We were extremely close and she was very supportive of me."

SM: "Looking back from a distance to the decision (of the hiring of the successor to Prescott as NT boss) are you still comfortable with your presentation during the interview process?"
DK: "Yeah, I don't think there was a single answer or idea that was the turning point that swung the balance against me. I can't believe there is much of anything that separates Zoe, Will and myself on a fundamental level. At the end of the day I'm confident that the choice came down to a preference to make a clean break. The discussions I've had since that time with people have reinforced my belief in that."

SM: "What's the most important thing you've learned from your sabbatical?"
DK: "How much I've been missing out on my kids growing up. We had a lot of discussions about what the affect of taking them out of school for an entire grade level would have, but the experiences and the amount of self-discovery they all gained are invaluable. Pam (Scott) invited us to come stay in Banija for a few weeks, encouraged us to go out around the country and experience the everyday life. Kelsey Vickers got in contact with me while we there and recommended a similar visit to Vilita, put us in touch with a host that helped us out."
SM: "I've heard a lot about how ex-National Team players network among themselves in unconventional ways, so Vickers couldn't have been the only one who reached out?"
DK: "Of course the response to the announcement from current and past NT players was overwhelming as it really drives home how much of an impact you have on others that probably have a closer relationship with coaches at club level. But yeah there were other suggestions and invitations to other nations during the trip."

SM: "Let's talk about the near term future. Tony Weiss made a smooth transition to club management at MAC..."
DK: "Did he ever! Stepping in to follow a legend like Paul Julian and finishing fourth."
SM: "Would you put yourself as a candidate for a Championship management opening, or are you looking to make a move to an international job ahead of the World Cup qualifying?"
DK: "well...I am 11-3 as national team boss. (laughs) Would I like a chance to lead a national team? Sure. Is there a domestic club that I'd listen to an offer from? Sure. Is there a domestic club overseas that I'd listen to an offer from? Sure. But I don't think I need to throw myself out to any job just to have one at this point."

FAC Conference review
by Travis Mosely
The Post Soccer Correspondent

East Liverpool--The Football Association of the Commonwealth convened the 132nd General Conference here at the Van de Veer Performing Arts Center with a return to a more typical format than has been the case for the last few years; General Secretary Allison LeFleur opened proceedings from the start with an address that touched upon the theme of reclaiming something lost.
The return of the Baker Park National Team to the knockout stage of World Cup 94 as well as the hosting of both the Under-18 World Championship & Baptism of Fire 81 were tied together metaphorically as a step back to the beginnings of the mixed gender era, which allowed LeFleur to end her remarks with the announcement that she would be retiring from her role as the Chief Operating Officer of the Association at the conclusion of the calendar year.

LeFleur began her tenure under David Carlson as Assistant Executive Director, then assumed the role as General Secretary from Carlson which made her the first ever woman to have full control over the FAC's day to day operation.
Following the first session Ethan Harriot, Deputy Chairman at Monmouth Park FC, spoke with effusive praise of the General Secretary's tenure.
"David Carlson whipped this organization into shape, but Ally made it rich. She is literally responsible for bringing C$20 billion at a minimum into the coffers during her time at State Street. She was able to take other people's visions & ideas and make them work while also making a profit."

Steven Fleming, the current Executive Director, followed the lengthy ovation the delegates gave LeFleur by breaking the mood. "And that concludes the Conference, thank you, safe travels home", he announced to laughter from the crowd before talking about the performance of the BPNT throughout qualifying and the Finals under Will Barnard's leadership.

Sporting Director Liam Sullivan addressed the upcoming National League season that will see the new divisional alignment come into effect; one surprise item was the announcement of the FAC and the National League agreeing to withhold nominating the winner of the FAC Academy Premier League to the IFCF Rising Stars Cup under the format that competition is currently held.

"We've long been dissatisfied that the RSC is organized more for the benefit of youth sides of the clubs that make the group stage of the IFCF Champions League, the majority of which wouldn't qualify for the RSC on merit. Champions of fully organized leagues like the FAC Academy League are treated as afterthoughts rather than being the centerpiece of the competition," Sullivan explained to the audience which responded positively to the rationale. "There's no upside for our clubs to have pay to send an academy side overseas for a single fixture while other clubs get six extra fixtures for their youth team."

The second day of the Conference is usually devoted to business matters, including the organization's balance sheet; the Jenna Raven Cup/Women's World Cup accounting hadn't been included at the last GC in Oceana but was reported as part of the C$168 million operating profit from C$336.2 million in revenue; advance media rights payments for the U18/BOF/WCQ were factored into the rise of income, while the final accounting of net results will have to wait for the next GC.

One final recognition came at the close of the Conference when Michael Haddad was given a send-off upon his retirement as FAC Director of Training & Sport Science; nearly all of the directors & heads of the various departments gathered on stage as another long-time figure from before mixed gender was celebrated.

Hailey Reinhart-Zavaros, the former NT staff assistant who has been transitioning to succeed Haddad offered a brief tribute.
"Michael was a training coach for Trevor Richmond, and when I first came to the FAC as a youth team coach he was someone I worked with a lot so it's a very bittersweet moment to be stepping into his shoes to lead the department that he is the father of. We've made such huge progress as an organization in pioneering technical training standards because of his work and I'm looking forward to continuing his legacy."

National League re-cap

The National League season seemed like a throwback to a distant time as Hillsborough FC captured the Championship for a record 15th time and first since 2011 while Monmouth Park won the FAC Cup for the 7th time ending a drought that went back to 2007; Borough's win was even more special for the club as it came 125 years after their first ever title in 1912.

Ezriquay United shook off their doldrums from a season ago when they finished bottom of the table after having won the title two years ago to come home second while Asbury Park, newly promoted Shirley Metros and North Lima rounded out the top five for the IFCF places.

After a season without relegation, the drop came for three clubs with plenty of history—Victoria & Albert suffered a second drop in 13 years, a bitter pill to swallow while also watching their rivals take the trophy; Learfield won 3 crowns and consistently hovered near the top of the table over the last 18 seasons but they were also relegated the last time Hillsborough took top honors, although it was only a single season in the 2nd; and Newport City's 2 year stay matches their previous top flight experience.

In the Second, the Midds battled it out for a return, with Middlebourne City pulling away late to pip Middletown City to the title with Linden Woods third, finally breaking free from one dubious honor to join a rare circle; they were the third oldest club to have never been promoted to the top flight, but now will join seven others who have played in all 5 levels of the pyramid.

The Women's National League finally crowned a champion that was neither Sherwood Forest Ladies nor Newmarket Ladies as Middletown City Women edged past the Little Janes and Shirley Metros Ladies kept Market and the rest of the league at arms length to the take the three Liga B spots. Midd City earned their 3rd ever top flight trophy by winning 10 and drawing 1 of the final 13 matches, defeating Forest on matchday 36 to slide into pole position.

Meadowdale Women won the 60th FAC Women's Cup, their fifth win in seven appearances in the Final,

Monmouth Park's win in the 129th FAC Cup Final punches their ticket to the IFCF Cup Winners Cup competition. The romance of the cup returned once again as the little guys punched well above their weight: non-league Albion Borough and Ralston United made it to the Third Round while Western & Southern fell in the Fifth Round and Mansfield County carried the banner for the FAC Shield all the way through to the quarterfinal eliminating Hillsborough in the last 16 to advance, where they were beaten by 3rd Division Jeromesville who themselves were eliminated in the Semi-Final by neighbors Hamilton Wanderers.

State University FC defeated Shiloh to win the 83rd FAC Shield with East Liverpool SC and Valley View also earning promotion to the Third Division; Jamestown City will return to the 2nd Division along with East Endborough and Trinity FC, continuing a trend where the previous season's playoff loser is promoted the following year.

The National Conference returned to the usual suspects at the top as Great Northern RR and Crusaders FC finished 1-2 once again.

And Georgetown AC became the second club of the newest group of full members to win the 112th FAC Trophy defeating Shiloh 3-2; they join Mel-Wood in collecting their first hardware since being admitted to full member status 14 years ago.

General Conference OK's FAC Expansion
by Travis Mosely
The Weekend Post Soccer Correspondent

BELLE HAVEN--The Football Association of the Commonwealth has given the green light to a joint FAC/National League initiative that will see the return of a 2nd Division to the Women's National League, a complete separation of the lower half of the 3rd Division into a fourth tier, and as many as 10 clubs granted full membership.

The 133rd General Conference opened with the focus squarely directed on a theme of change across the organization; the overhaul of management of the technical & player development departments prior to World Cup 94 was but a prelude to the replacement of many holdovers from the regime of former Executive Director David Carlson.

FAC General Secretary Anthony Woodson, who replaced Allison LaFleur in the post following the last GC, stressed that decisions had largely been finalized prior to his hiring.
"There was a core group of senior support staff that had signaled they would be leaving us around the same time that Allison announced her decision, many who had been with the organization for 25+ years. We are pleased that we've been able to have a continuity by promoting from within where the opportunities were available."

Newly elected FAC Chairman Rich Callaghan also pushed the theme of change in his keynote remarks following his swearing-in.
"The FAC has grown exponentially under the leadership of David Carlson, Ally LaFleur and Cheryl Livingston, leaving those of us coming behind them a burden to continue along a similar path. It is a burden I am happy to undertake."

National League Preview

Hillsborough and Ezriquay United both reaching the Challengers Cup Group Stage wasn't enough to help the league maintain its IFCF top 32 ranking, costing it a second Champions League berth so the National League will have only the top four sides advancing this time.

Brief rundown of the clubs that will compete in the Championship, in order of their previous season finish

Linden Woods FC
Promoted from the Second Division (3rd Place)

There will be a lot of early season goodwill in the club's favor among supporters across the nation as they will be the oldest FAC member club making their debut in the top flight in history, in addition to joining rare list as the eighth club which has played in all 5 levels of the pyramid.
Woods have been playing in one form or another since 1899 when they were one of the 'local' teams along the Trunk Line railway that competed against other sides from depots and stations up & down the length of the Free Tariff zone.
Probably relegation fodder, but they'll make sure they leave a mark on the division.

Middletown City FC
Promoted from the 2nd Division (Runner-up)

MiddCity are back for another term in the Championship hoping to avoid a third 'one and done' season in the top flight over the last 12 years. They have a far better Championship pedigree than either of their promotions mates but the aging club infrastructure and it battling on both fronts (men & women) is hampering recruitment/retention.
Staying up in the bottom 5 or 6 or relegation would probably not surprise anyone; if they made an immediate climb up the table, that would turn heads.

Middlebourne City AFC
Promoted from the 2nd Division (Champions)

MidBo has been the most consistent club in the 2nd Division over the last four seasons in which they were members—3rd, 2nd, 4th and 1st places finishes, with a one year stint in the Championship splitting those four results. It's defense that is the name of the game—even their relegation season three years ago they had the second fewest goals allowed in the bottom half of the table.
They may survive comfortably for a few seasons if they can find offensive production.

Clayton City FC
17th in the Championship

The word on the street about 10 minutes after the final whistle of the final day in the Championship was that in a fair world Clayton City would've been relegated; that was the Red Stripes' own supporters expressing that view and it took less than another 30 minutes after that for Chris Farmer, the winningest manager in club history to step aside. They have turned to Adam Gelling, a former CC academy grad who got Andover a cameo 2nd Division berth three years ago.

Nor-Dale AFC
16th in the Championship

The Maroons have never been afraid of relegation, seemingly always prepared financially if the drop comes; the expansion back to twenty top-flight clubs was aimed at keeping sides like them from bouncing back & forth so much. There's a feeling that they've reached their apex during this stay in the Championship and there's a lot of smart money that says they won't survive.

Marshallton Athletic SC
15th in the Championship

There is very little entertainment value (to supporters in Baker Park anyway) to being a Championship Division club that finishes between 9th and 15th place every season. Prior to this modern era of the sport in the Commonwealth, there was almost no real difference to playing in the First or Second Division. The overall thinking in the board room of a club like A's has been that there is silverware to be won in the lower league but there are no trophies for 10th place.

Monmouth Park
14th in the Championship

On the flip side of smiling, happy yo-yo clubs is Monmouth Park, which has been trapped in a decade and a half of malaise that makes not just their supporters but a good cross section of the professional soccer business in this country uneasy. There a school of thought that the club as a whole are a symptom of a deeper problem in their particular corner of the Commonwealth that can be traced to demographics—the population in Endover is moving away from Endborough and the overall health of the sport in the state is poor.

Westwood Sprites
13th in the Championship

Sprites have very little to be smug about—which is usually the club's default attitude—these days as it now is eight seasons since their magical run to the Championship title and they always seem to be flirting with the relegation battle around the 2/3 mark every year. The argument has been settled that they cannot stay at Highview if they want to stay in the Championship, so it's now going to be a fight over which direction they move.

Salisbury City
12th in the Championship

The Plainsmen make small, slow, steady steps forward as a playing side and on the wider organizational front as a business venture. They have a waiting list for season tickets via their supporters club, a sign of an increasing fan base thanks to an appearance in the Challengers Cup two years ago. Only New Bremen (5) has won more trophies over the last seven years than Salisbury (3). Honest.

Midtown AC
11th in the Championship

Tony Weiss knew Year 2 wasn't going to be the same as his debut season, although MAC earned the same point total (54) both years but finished seven places lower last term (11th vs 4th). He's building a squad that can play a 90 minute full pitch possession style game.

New Bremen
10th in the Championship

Brem's meteoric rise to dynasty status has certainly reached its apogee as the core of the title winning sides departs little by little. Midtable doesn't seem like a bad place to be at this point as the transition continues into Trent Yeoman's second season in charge,

Southend AC
9th in the Championship

Although they were in third place at halfway, Southend never seemed to outsiders as being in* the title/IFCF chase most of the year but rather like around* it. The entire southwestern corner of the Commonwealth looks to be heading for a massive reset in the next few years.

Dalton Town FC
8th in the Championship

Eric Dunbar's side fell to their lowest finish in his ten seasons as a rough spell in the early spring dropped them from the battle for the top five. They will look to get back into contention in what could be a wide open league.

St Warren City FC
7th in the Championship

There was a lot of speculation that James Montinelli's 12th season might've been his last if Saints had been in the relegation fight again, but they were as high as third at one point and if they hadn't dropped four points in the last three matches, they would've been the Challengers Cup.

Llewellyn Turnpike SC
6th in the Championship

It wasn't their top six finish that had the folks at the Tollgate on cloud nine but that they got to see hated rival Learfield be relegated right in front of them. Cary Blasingame's third year will see a bit more of the changeover from Tommy Bender's long tenure with fresh faces in the squad.

North Lima SC
5th in the Championship

The Vikings highest ever finish in the top flight earned them a reward of a Challengers Cup spot and they did it with the second highest scoring attack in the division! Offensive fireworks at North Lima? Madness...

Shirley Metros FC
4th in the Championship

Terry Mathias ignored calls for him to quit when Metros were relegated four seasons ago, so he made sure to remind everyone that he was the same manager last year as he was when they were 17th. But he admits that it's taken a toll on his health and so this will be his final season in charge. If the Reds could send their boss out with a title it would make the story even more of a fairytale.

Asbury Park FC
3rd in the Championship

AP looks like their one season downturn in Ali Saleh's second year was just a blip as they returned to the title chase, putting a scare into the eventual champs by closing a nine point gap over the last three rounds to come up short.

Ezriquay United FC
2nd in the Championship

United went from Champions to last place but saved from relegation, to runner-up during the craziest three year stint in the annals of the National League. Someone suggested to Mark Albert that he surely had used all of the stored up karma he'd collected in his life, which he had to admit was probably true. United do have probably the best starting XI in the Championship, so can they stay near the top?

Hillsborough FC
1st in the Championship

At the end, the nation's collective weakness for nostalgia meant that there was an old fashioned final day TV whiparound from the venues that contained the storylines.
Old College Park in Southend was the scene of Hillsborough's final act as they needed at least a point or alternatively, Ezriquay United—playing at home to New Bremen—to not win; the sides had split their two meetings, but United had a 2 goal advantage head to head and were 3 points back.
Southend had incentive to win as they could (and would) jump about 3 or 4 places in the final table, New Bremen were the outgoing champions playing for pride.
As the final whistles blew in an almost orderly series across the Commonwealth, the nation's most successful soccer club—mired in mediocrity for nearly 2 decades—were the Champions of Baker Park.

Predicted order of finish for the current season:
1 Asbury Park
2 Shirley Metros
3 Ezriquay United
4 Dalton Town
5 Midtown AC
6 Hillsborough
7 New Bremen
8 Southend AC
9 Llewellyn Turnpike
10 North Lima
11 Westwood Sprites
12 St Warren City
13 Monmouth Park
14 Salisbury City
15 Middlebourne City AFC
16 Middletown City FC
17 Marshallton Athletic
18 Clayton City
19 Nor-Dale AFC
20 Linden Woods

FAC shocked by COH snub
by Mindy Cartwright, National Soccer Editor

The Baker Park National Team saw their streak of 15 consecutive qualifications for the World Cup Finals ended in the 95th cycle, but they can also now claim a record of a more dubious distinction.

The FAC waited for the call inviting the side to take part in the Cup of Harmony, but it was a wait in vain as the 32 team field was announced without Baker Park included.

This means that BP—which dropped three spots to 17th--are the first nation ranked in the top 20 of the KPB, of those that entered the World Cup qualifying round, that has ever been left out of the COH field; the range of reactions from FAC officials at the news covered the spectrum of possible emotions.

“Well, next time when we qualify we can say that we're the only nation that's played exclusively in the Finals,” Assistant Manager and Technical Director Zoe Montgomery responded when asked. “We certainly would've been one of the favorites if we'd gone, but it's probably a better use of our time to get ready for the Jenna Raven (Cup).”

Executive Director Steven Fleming read a statement on behalf of the Board:
“The Board of Directors of the Football Association of the Commonwealth take the exclusion of our National Team from the Cup of Harmony as a slap in the face to our organization, players, coaches and administration. It is a decision made totally without precedent in WCC history, which magnifies our outrage further. The current estimates show that Baker Park will lose at minimum 6 more places in the KPB ranking as the result of a zero point cycle while those nations currently 19th, 21st, 22nd, 24th, and 25th will potentially gain points. The WCC knows that this will have a detrimental effect on the revenue sharing formula for the FAC, in essence penalizing Baker Park twice. We strenuously lodge our dissent at the choice made to use this occasion to break with settled precedent."

BPNT Co-Captain Lucie Shanahan took a more sanguine view of the situation.
"I think it maybe isn't the disaster it looks like. How much turnover of the roster would Will have done in order to see more of the younger bunch? I know there are players who didn't think they could get excited about the COH, so that also plays a factor. I feel like the Women's (World) Cup is now higher on the priority list and that will mean a stronger core for that group."

The Saterun FA is expected to take on the leading role in the organizing of the next Jenna Raven/Women's World Cup, with an announcement regarding the tournament expected before the conclusion of the WC/COH cycle.

FAC, BPLA lend a helping hand to CRU for World Cup
by Mindy Cartwright, National Soccer Editor

The Commonwealth Rugby Union have seen their fortunes rise over the last several years as the governing body have raised the profile of the national team on the multiverse stage. They've moved from unranked and unknown in RWC 32 to their current ranking of number seven following the trip to the quarterfinals in Darmen in the last edition.

The parallel climb that was similar to an earlier rise by not just one but two different national teams was duly noted by the leadership at the CRU offices which led to an opening up of a dialog between the Union, the Baker Park Lacrosse Association and the FAC; the latter two organizations had experience in how to run a large international tournament and what the event entails logistically.

Since winning the bid for RWC 36 the CRU have relied on the expertise that their sister governing bodies have been happy to share.
"We are excited to have another opportunity to show the multiverse what the Commonwealth offers, both to the fans back in the home nations watching on TV and those visitors traveling to watch in person", said Patty Erbacher, Operations Director of the BPLA who has been a part of planning of WLC 31, 37 and 42 during her tenure, originally at the UAC and now with the governing body. "You are serving three different constituencies at a basic level--the teams, the fans and the media. All of them have the same fundamental needs over the duration of the competition so the goal is to have everything as organized ahead of time as is possible and to be prepared for unexpected occurrences by having Plan B."

Season in Review

The 118th National League Season will be remembered as the largest in history with 94 clubs across the four divisions and the National Conference. As usual competition at the top of tables was close and constantly changing until the final few weeks; only the Third and Fourth Divisions came to the final day to determine a champion although the Championship, Second Division and the Conference all had close races until the final couple of rounds of play.

The biggest off season story was Hillsborough's hiring of former National Team Assistant Manager Darren Kirbyafter the retirement of Nick Griffith. Kirby became the second member of Jennifer Prescott's staff to find work in the National League, as Tony Weiss led Midtown to the title last season.

The other managerial change in the top two flights was Ryan Dawsey leaving Dalton United after having taken them from the FAC Shield as a player manager to the National Conference then back to single gender, winning the Shield and remaining in the Third Division ever since. He also led them to Fourth and Fifth Round Cup appearances (a Third Division Club in last 16 is a fairly rare occurrence).

Riverside City were relegated from the Championship after last season—giving them the dubious distinction of being sole leaders at the top of the Most Promoted and Most Relegated Clubs in history (15 each). They are one of Baker Park's favorite yo-yo clubs and have a lot of shiny hardware in their trophy case—2 Championships, 5 Second Division titles, 3 Third Division crowns, four FAC Cups and a National League Trophy; their fans are some of the best in the NL and with rare exceptions visiting supporters are almost welcome for a pint.

There was an interesting parallel between the two mens' campaigns—a veteran league boss with over 700 matches in charge and a league novice—Kirby never played professionally—at two clubs with long histories.

But first, let's cover the rest of the results from the League's other tables.

Third Division—Greenlea United will be in the second tier for the first time after they made it a mens/womens sweep of trophies at Queen Anne's Park. While the ladies have been the main draw in the far southwest of Lynchana for awhile, the men have tread water in the Third for over 20 seasons.
Fourth Division—ROCK United captured what will be officially the inaugural title of the Fourth Division, hanging on through the final day as none of the chasing pack could get all three points to dislodge them from top spot. Like Greenlea, this will be the first League title the club has won, as both previously had captured the FAC Shield and the old Conference title (which existed in a no-man's land of being technically part of the NL but also not considered a League trophy).

FAC Shield—The finale was probably the least likely outcome anyone could imagine. Forresters FC had been the dominant side all season, while State University FC and Jeromesville ran away in the Western division, tying for the top spot but 15 points ahead of third place. Meadowlarks SC have been an also-ran regional club in the shadow of the Endborough sides for years and this season faced their nearby rivals that had been formerly a non-league clubs for their history, White River FC.

The Larks knocked off State University while Jeromesville upset Forresters to set up a rematch of sorts—their only previous appearance in the Shield playoffs was ended by the Jerrys in 1985 when only the finalists won promotion.
120 minutes couldn't separate the sides and Larks survived a dramatic shootout to win their first ever trophy and promotion.

National Conference—Great Northern RR FC won the title for 6th time, and the second in four seasons.
Women's National League Division 1—for the first time in 19 seasons the WNL was a two division setup with the top 16 clubs from the previous season making up the top flight.
Greenlea United Ladies took their fourth crown edging out Ridge Raiders Ladies with Shirley Metros Ladies coming out on top of a three way points tie with Westwood Sprites and Jamestown City Ladies, plus Newmarket Ladies only a point behind them in sixth.
WNL Division 2—Brentford Ladies took the crown in the 14 team circuit as nearly the entire non-league roster of sides was absorbed into the professional game. Eight more associate member clubs were fast-tracked for further development towards full pro status over the next several years.

Meanwhile, back to the main story, Hillsborough struggled early in the season as Kirby encountered the usual teething pains that come with stylistic change, hovering around 15th for a good part of the first half of the season and finding themselves 14 points behind defending champions Midtown.
That was when the switch clicked on and all of sudden Borough went on a run with 10 wins and a draw over the next 13, capped off with a home victory over MAC on Round 31 that drew Boro to within 8 points in 6th place with seven matches left.

On matchday 36 MAC suffered a loss while now 2nd in the table Hillsborough won, cutting the gap to 5 with 2 matches remaining. The country's most successful club wasn't going to overhaul the champions to write a magical end, were they?
Boro faced Dalton at home, who were in the chase for the third Challengers Cup spot with Ezriquay, Monmouth Park and Asbury Park while MAC would face Clayton City at home who were on their way to the second tier.
CC put up a legitimate fight but MAC prevailed, clinching their second straight Championship title, only the seventh club to repeat in the top flight. Dalton moved to 2 points behind Borough with a 1-0 win, leaving the Hillsiders work left to hold onto the runner up spot.

Boro and Dalton took wins on the final day to nail down the 2nd and 3rd place while Ezriquay United hung on to fourth when Asbury Park lost.

Compare and contrast that roller coaster to Dawsey's first term, where RivCity got off to a decent start keeping themselves within striking distance of a Corinthians side that jumped out of the gate with five straight wins. Corries came back to the pack as half season approached, Riverside up to second just a point behind after winning 9 and drawing 2 of their previous 13 matches.
After matchday 22, RivCity were atop the table by a point, but then hit a rocky patch where they alternated wins and losses and found themselves down to 4th with seven rounds to go, just the wrong time to hit their worst stretch as they lost five of their final seven fixtures to finish 6th, 10 points back.
Not a disaster by any means but a bit of a letdown at the end, compounded by a few injuries to key starters that Dawsey took responsibility for by not rotating the squad enough.

Corinthians finally return to the Championship after a lengthy exile, with Meadowdale and Sanborn Borough showing consistency over the entire season to take the other two promotion places.

National League in Review

The National League Championship came down to final day once again, the climax of a spirited battle at the top of the table among half a dozen clubs over the course of the campaign.

Two time defending champions Midtown Athletic Club were a threat throughout, always seemingly to be a just a two or three match run from taking over top spot but instead dropped back to fifth place with 10 matches left, although they climbed back to place third ten points behind the eventual winner.

Dalton Town have been a club that has been a model of consistency over the past 20 seasons, finishing in the top 3 nine times over that span and never lower than 8th; only a late season blip cost them a chance at the title after having the joint best record over the second half of the season, with a 2-2 draw at home to New Bremen in round 33 upsetting the momentum as they dropped two of their final five matches.

It was Brem who pushed the pace all the way to the end, winning all five of their fixtures in the same span to cap off a run of ten matches that saw them take 21 of 30 possible points to claim their 8th Championship in 19 seasons to move them ahead of Monmouth Park into seventh all time.

At the bottom of the table Corinthians FC, charter members of the FAC, will return to the Second Division after a dreadful season that saw them finish 20 points behind 16th place Llewellyn Turnpike, which rebounded after losing all 6 of their opening matches. Middlebourne City and Meadowdale FC will return to the Second as well, with MidBo only winning once over the last 19 rounds and 'Dale falling victim to both LT and Westwood Sprites' scramble away from the drop.

In the Women's National League, Westwood Sprites Ladies captured the First Division Championship for the first time since Pamela Scott won the second of Sprites only two titles 31 seasons ago. The surged to the crown after losing only once over their final 11 matches including a 2-1 win against Leiderkranz Ladies with 2 games left. Leiderkranz held on for second ahead of Jamestown City, which held off Hamilton and Sherwood Forest for the final LBCT berth.

The same four clubs will swap places between the First and Second Divisions as Brentford Ladies and Clayton City Ladies will make the drop, to be replaced by Ravens and Linden Ladies, the opposite of last year's promo/relegation scrap.

St Warren City defeated Llewellyn Turnpike in the 133rd FAC Cup Final, their first win since 1939 and LT's first ever defeat in five appearances.
Riverside City Ladies won their record tying sixth trophy and second in three seasons in the 64th FAC Women's Cup, defeating Clayton City Ladies.

Elsewhere in the National League, the Second Division saw battle for the top three among half a dozen clubs, with Mansfield C&W setting the pace over the first 3/5 of the season until they hit a rough stretch that unfortunately coincided with a torrid stretch of play from both Riverside City and Clayton City, each putting together 10 match unbeaten streaks between rounds 24 and 34.
RivCity and CC took the top two places as C&W did manage to win 3 of their final four to hang on for third.

In the Third Division Bridgend Metros and Ravens FC were in a fight with Ridge Raiders until a surging Fairport City that only lost twice over the second half muscled their way into the runner up place leaving Raiders out of the promotion picture altogether.
The Fourth Division was the Sherwood Forest show as the Robins built a steady lead over the course of the season, extending a 4 point gap to second at the halfway mark to a 15 point final margin ahead of the local rivals Springfield City who would've been champs in a normal year, that's how well they played. Shiloh FC dropped back near the end of the year but then raced to the final promo place with 3 wins in their last five.

The National Conference had a first time champion as Jacksonville City captured the 20th season crown, becoming the eighth club to win the trophy at least once. Although they finished level on points with Castleford they edged out the Endover club as a result of having one more win and a better oversall goal difference.

The FAC Shield was two division, two horse race as Charter Township and New Harmony raced away from the East Division, the Princes racking up 79 points, 15 ahead of 3rd place McIlroy Station but just 3 ahead of the runner-up; both clubs had lengthy unbeaten periods after both lost their second match of the campaign--New Harm went 21 matches in a row without another defeat while Charter had a six match streak, a loss to at home to McIlroy followed by another six match unbeaten spell, a loss to New Harmony followed by a 10 match unbeaten run which was ended by a second loss to McIlroy followed by a 3 match run and their final loss of the campaign saw another 5 match unbeaten streak to close out the season, including a round 35 win over New Harmony to account for the final margin.

In the West, Hampton SC and Jennings Borough had a similar duel of wills, leaving Tri-Village United--in their best season ever--gasping for air eight points out from second and twelve behind top spot.

Charter Township and Hampton met in the FAC Shield Final, the first time the top two sides had done so in 14 seasons. CT won their first ever title on their eighth playoff berth, with Hampton, New Harmony, and Jennings joining the Champions in the Fourth Division next season.

National League Review

New Bremen captured their ninth Championship title in the last 20 seasons after surviving a brutal final five round showdown that saw the top six sides struggle to win matches with 15 points available to each over that span.
Brem became the first National League club to advance to the Champions League group stage (as well as a trip to the quarterfinals of the Hui La) whi Cch proved to be enough to raise the NL's IFCF coefficient back into the top 32, allowing a second Championship side to earn a CL berth.
