OOC: The Weegies is trying to run its' league system! However, it has a problem. The player foolishly decided that an English-style massive league system would be amusing and fit in with his nation's football fanaticism, so he created an 8-tier system with 18 leagues, with a total of, he says tentatively, 236 teams. Most of which need names. He spent 3 hours last night naming teams, his brain melted into jelly, and he only got about half of them done. When he realised he could possibly farm it off to suckers wonderful and discerning folk on NS Sport.

So here we are! Of course, I'm not suggesting you do this out of the goodness of your heart. So, in return for providing names for teams in my league, I will allow the clubs you name to become "feeder teams" for teams from your own nation. You can choose which league it goes into (apart from my top division, which is full, and assuming there are spots left), you will be able to send players on loan there, no questions asked, to get some first-team experience in a physically demanding footballing nation's league system, and your nation's team will get first dibs of any exciting talent that our nation's team's managers inform you of. As The Weegies is a non-capitalist nation and does not do transfers (player swaps is as far as we go), this will be equivalent to, generally, getting a player for free. It's a virtual bargain!

Team names should generally be "Scottishesque", or Gaelic-sounding, or (very seldomly) Scandanavian-sounding which fits with the nation's general naming policies. Lots of Abers, Duns, Kirks, Auchters, and Pits, please, although as few real ones as possible. TG The Weegies with your suggestions.

Office of the WFA: Official Release
Chamber House
15 North Glasburgh Street,
Mackintosh,
Weegia,
MCK-0289-WIA.

F.C. Aberdunkirk and Sonskirk Tigers are the first teams to take advantage of a new Weegie Football Association initiative to foster international connections and competition by linking them with teams from other nations. The two teams, who will be playing this season in The Weegie League, 2nd Division, will be linked with Tenderville United, who play in the Candelaria And Marquez Soccer Championship, and the two teams hope they will benefit greatly from their links with the Nethertopian team .

F.C. Aberdunkirk play their home matches in the Old Municipal Grounds, Aberdunkirk, located just 5 miles from Buchanan on the island of Weegia. The Old Municipal Grounds can hold up to 14,234 spectators. Aberdunkirk, population 81,476, is one of many industrial towns on the heavily populated and built-up southern headland of Weegia known as "The Tail". Founded in 1954, they have won three Second Division championships, and spent a decade in the 1st Division, from 1968/69 to 1978/79. They have never been promoted to the top tier of Weegie football, just missing out in 1974/75, when they came 3rd. That season, they also won the Island Cup, the most prestigious cup competition in The Weegies, after a magnificent shock 4-1 defeat of Hanover Town, that season's Weegie Premier Division champions.

Sonskirk Tigers play their home matches in Granton Park, Carlsson, which can hold 8,169 spectators; Sonskirk is a district of this city in the north of Weegia. Existing as a club since 1893, the club did not play in the national Weegie league system until the 2000/01 shake-up, which brought together all the disparate leagues that had existed in The Weegies into one national pyramid system. Sonskirk Tigers played in the League of Weegia, and never once dropped out of that league's top division, winning the championship 13 times, and winning the league's cup competition 7 times. When the league shake-up happened, Sonskirk Tigers quickly flew up the tiers, winning promotion in seasons 2000/01, 02/03, 05/06, and 08/09. This will be the team's first ever season in the Second Division. Their main claim to fame, apart from their' performances in the League of Weegia and their rapid promotion, is that it was the boyhood club of Peter De Bruis, part of the excellent strike duo who helped The Weegies qualify for their first World Cup Finals in World Cup X, and a World Cup Hall of Famer.

WFA President Arthur McBride said: "We hope to see a great connection between Sonskirk Tigers, F.C. Aberdunkirk and Tenderville United. This is only the beginning of a very fruitful relationship which will enable the world to see how many talented footballers we have here in The Weegies."

Updated coëfficients are now available.

The proposal to require evidence of results to be posted once every two seasons has passed, by a margin of nine votes to five. The following assocations failed this requirement in the previous season, and will be required it to satisfy it (e.g., by posting a league table for their next season) in order to enter teams in the next season of international club competition:
  • Carpathia and Ruthenia
  • The Islands of Qutar
  • Nethertopia
  • Taeshan
  • The Weegies

The entry quotas for the next season of international club competiton are as follows:
TakilQuip Champions’ Cup 17: The number of teams allowed is determined according to league coëfficients, with the following distribution:
  • Associations ranked 1–6 (Cafundéu, Candelaria And Marquez, Septentrionia, Capitalizt SLANI, Ad’ihan, and Elves Security Forces) are allowed to enter four teams.
  • Associations ranked 7–16 (Jasĭyun, Sorthern Northland, Vephrall, Dancougar, Estresse Intenso, West Zirconia, Aguazul, Krytenia, Taeshan, and Liventia) are allowed to enter three teams.
  • Associations ranked 17 and below, and unranked associations, are allowed to enter two teams.
Globe Cup 14: Every association is allowed to enter three teams.
Samseong Series B Champions’ Cup 14: Every assocation is allowed to enter four teams.

The format of the Samseong Series B Champions’ Cup will be modified starting with the fourteenth edition, so that no teams will be qualified directly to the group stage, and instead all teams will have to play in the preliminary stage. This new format will lift the eighty-team cap, so all associations will now be able to enter four teams.
Furthermore, the division of preliminary rounds in the TakilQuip Champions’ Cup will be altered, such that only the final preliminary round (which will now be called the “playoff round”) of each tournament will be held on the second day, allowing the draw for the qualifying stage of the Globe Cup to be held in advance.

NEW SEASON, NEW FORMAT AND BETTER THAN NEVER

The third edition of the Hydro Super League will have some changes, approved by the Valladar Football Association and Hydro, the Super League's official sponsor.

1. The Super League will have twenty teams instead of sixteen. Therefore, four teams were promoted from the Valladar B-League the last season.

2. The format will change as well: The league will operate under an Apertura and Clausura system. In each part of the season, the twenty teams will play each other once (a single round-robin format) and the eight teams with the most points at Matchday 19 will qualify to the second round. After point total, teams will be sorted by goal differential, head-to-head record, goals for and fewest goals against in that order. In the second round, the eight teams will be drawn into two groups of four teams each one. Each team will play the others in its group twice, and the winners of each group will play the Final. In the second round, after point total, teams will be sorted by number of points in the first round, goal differential, head-to-head record, goals for and fewest goals against in that order. The final will be played with home-and-away matches, and the team with the fewest points in the season (including first and second round) will play the first leg at home.

3. For purposes of promotion and relegation, the three teams with the fewest points in the Overall Standings at the end of the season (without counting second round) will be relegated. Therefore, there will be three standings: General, Overall and Relegation.

INTERNATIONAL PERFORMANCE:

The valladar clubs have showed significant progresses since their debut in international competitions two seasons ago. In the TakilQuip Champions' Cup, the new champion was having its debut in its first international tournament, after having lost its chance to make its international debut with the other five teams two seasons ago. But, the Aguazulean team 12 de noviembre knocked out Eterna Stars in the second preliminary round, as this team did with Metropolis Aligators (the first valladar champions) in the TQCC15. Tannenberg FC, the second team in this season's competition, successfully knocked out Mackintosh Thistle Celtic in the first preliminary round, but BobBank FC sent the "Citizens" to the Globe Cup.

The valladar representatives in the Globe Cup were quickly knocked out. Slateport Bulls lost their match against Wexax United in the Selective Stage, Marinos Metropolis qualified to the Preliminary Stage after knocking out the Taeshani team X Island Marauders, but Pulmonologists knocked out the second Metropolitan team. Metropolis Alligators entered in the Eliminatory Stage along with Eterna Stars and Tannenberg FC, both knocked out from the TakilQuip Champions' Cup, but East Reading, from Sorthern Northland, knocked out the Alligators. Stars and Citizens fought, but they lost with dignity and were knocked out as well.

The Samseong Series B Champions' Cup showed another different story. Despite the Olympique de Fontvielle's elimination in the second preliminary round, AD Cerro and Cardenales FC did a outstanding performance. AD Cerro advanced to the second preliminary round after knocking out Thornhill Rovers, but Nashua, from Newmanistan, made them see the reality. Cardenales was undoubtedly, the best valladar team in the SBCC. They advanced to the third preliminary round after winning over Internashionale from Starblaydia in the first preliminary round and Athletico Palampas in the second preliminary round, but Galáxia from Cafundéu knocked out them from the tournament. It was impossible to think that the worst team in the first season of the Hydro Super League was doing an outstanding performance in an international tournament.

And out the other side, after a fourth round that saw NAPPC become the first CMSC1 victim – a bit of a blow for them, given how the cup is one of the few things they have to play for, but staying up is clearly of more immediate importance. As is going up for CandelariaAM and the Cats, which goes some way to explaining why they haven’t made the fifth round for the first time in years. The usual pathetic handful of semi-pro clubs making it through include Dyce, tiny Marquezian outfit Estrellas Brilliantes, and… oh, that’s your lot. Pfft. Non-league Vo FC did marvellously to get as far as the fourth round, though, while the former Thompsontown Bettians (and still the Thompsontown Bettians, if you take the word of the majority of their thoroughly hacked-off fanbase) went within five minutes of taking Castillo to a replay. But they didn’t. So. There we go.

Domestic cup competitions really are tedious, aren’t they?

Anyhoo, all the news prior to the last thirty-two round was focused, with grim inevitability, away from the cup itself and on the events transpiring at the Marble Ground.

Yes, it really did have to happen. You don’t spend that kind of money on the likes of Jordan Hawker and Cody Horrigan and expect to squat third from bottom even at the half-way stage. The Marbles haven’t just been unlucky; they’ve been hopeless – and big Abdoulaye Soro has to take the bulk of the blame for that. Perhaps he didn’t get the players he really wanted, but this was a perfectly solid squad and trying to shove what he had into a truly unworkable 3-6-1 was never going to work. The fans have been left thoroughly chastened by the self-evident poverty of their hero’s skills, while those neutrals hoping that a black manager would finally make a success of his CMSC1 chance have been left disappointed again – years after Coleman Mustard’s much-heralded return to Radyukevich ended in disaster. With Catedral bombing along nicely in the second division, that corner of El din with all the metal shacks and dead dogs has suddenly gone rather quiet…

With Soro disposed of – apparently he heard of his sacking via the local press, but he’s a sizable chap and you can’t blame the board for chickening it – Marbles old hand Paolo Gardner has been handed the helm for now, but he’s clearly unlikely to be given the job full-time. A bigger name is supposedly being lined up, although we can’t see him having his own wiki or owt. It really is a blow, Soro cocking it up. But there we are.

Any road up, the Marbles scraped a draw at Portuguese in the cup mid-week, despite throwing away a first minute lead. It was a far more balanced side that took to the field in Arrigo, even if it saw Alberto Herráez and Erwin Visser dropped, and it proved certainly sufficient to put the wind up Portuguese’s own in-and-out defence – a standard built upon a few days later during the replay, where the home side ran out three-nil winners to give their season a proper old boost. To be fair, Portuguese have an international campaign to worry about and didn’t field the usual starting eleven, but it still represents a much brighter platform for the new man to build upon.

Other upsets saw league leaders Caires City make an early exit at the hands of Radyukevich, ending any tentative hopes of a double (or, indeed, triple… given that they’re the number one club in the world, and all, have we mentioned that?), while Turks’ Club ousted Albrecht Independent… although that’s pushing the definition a bit, I’ll grant you. Tenderville United, Gamboa, MN Smith and even Albrecht FC were all taken to replays but emerged comfortably enough, while all cup interest in the city of Caires was eliminated with the exit of Caires Sports in Zapata and Caires FC in Hoxton. A handful of all lower-league ties handed the Melin Professionals, Brayton Town, Maidment SC and Deportivo María chances for a ickle bit of glory, but otherwise it was all a bit… eh.

The magic of the CMS Cup, eh?

Matchday Eighteen… Yes, trip, trap, top over the rickety bridge to the fairy land that is the Clausura, and into that stage of the season that we rush through, comparatively speaking, even at the best of times since all the interesting stuff is over and it’ll be another ten games or so until we reach the period where everything matters again. So. Everyone drew again.

Interestingly, and entirely coincidentally, it being the first set of matches after the break, and not at all for any other reason; this weekend saw no side score more than twice – with just the single four-goal thriller in Abiodun, Gamboa and Portuguese sharing the points. Possibly everyone’s just conserving fuel ahead of the title run-in in a couple of months time. Let’s hope so. If we get another seven-nil I’m damn well writing to my MP. I know we’re not bloody Yaforites or owt, aside from the obvious, obviously, but we do have our standards too, y’know.

Anyway, all the title contenders basically slipped up – albeit with mixed emotions. Caires City can feel delighted to escape from Hodgehill with a point (actually, anyone’d be delighted to escape from Hodgehill at all… proper banjo country, that far out west), with teenage sub Leo Williams finding his seventh goal of the season two minutes into stoppage time and very definitely looking a real prospect now (City still have a functioning youth system… who knew?) with Richardson’s starting spot in his sights. It’ll be a massive call for Dionísio to switch his first-choice forward at this stage of the season, but on current form it could be the one that hands City the energy to push ahead as they bid to establish a more significant lead. The older man was certainly ineffectual against Mayo Valley, but he still adds presence that Williams needs to work on.

Green Island, on the other hand, were held by Gardner’s Marbles – with Sargossan captain González and former Taeshan international Jacin Raellis thriving anew as part of a back four. The home side’s equaliser came likewise in second half injury time, with Ricky – broom handle though he be – moving up into third in the Golden Boot race with his eleventh finish of the season. Tenderville and Caires Sports likewise had to be satisfied with points against considerably more lowly opposition, meanwhile.

As for the Scorpions, they dropped back to seven points off the lead with a defeat in Onwere that was altogether more comprehensive than the final scoreline suggested, and lost captain St. Louis to a minor knock as well. He should be back in a week or two, but the Kelssekian has looked somewhat injury prone over the last couple of years, and one has to wonder how much longer his ever-youthful body can take the strain of domestic, ICC and international action week-in, week-out. It can’t be healthy for the poor lad to keep on doing this. He’s been here ten seasons nearly, after all. How many cortisone injections must that come to since XVI, hm?

Elsewhere, Turkish stopped the rot with a healthy win against going-nowhere KT Hotspur. Mannasuch’s side this week bore a handful of noticeable differences, with Brittany Paxson dropped in favour of Seb Moon, and Cohen, Dirie and Estévez all going the same way (there’s loyalty for you… winning friends all over the place, our Fabio). Denny Alexander got a start, although that’s not expected to be a recurring feature – with the manager looking likely to wheedle his way around the usual mid-season transfer moratorium and bring in someone from Pasarga, of all place… but more on that in a bit…

If they weren’t before, by the way, Radyukevich are now officially crap and have a hell of a lot to worry about. Like right-back Ben Palmer being ruled out for most of the rest of the season. That won’t help.

Matchday Nineteen… This weekend, working down in alphabetical order, Albrecht FC were held goalless at home by Gamboa. Albrecht Turkish drew nil-nil against MN Smith. Arrigo Portuguese and Caires Sports played out a bore draw at the Estadio Nacional…

Okay… You don’t think you’re all maybe taking things a little too easy, guys?

The top two – and the only sides looking particularly likely to challenge right about now – both returned to winning ways, leaving the El din Marbles as the centres of attention once more. Their defeat at Caires City by the odd goal in, er, one, wasn’t especially criminal but it does spell the end of Gardner’s little reign with next weekend’s all-important hosting of fellow strugglers KT Hotspur to see the new manager take to the hot seat as he bids to keep the club’s top-flight stint alive before departing back from whence he came once more.

And that man is…

Asdrubal Espinoza!

Yes, Enrique Quintana has pulled off quite a coup by bringing the former Turkish boss back to the CMSC for a fifteen match spell, with Queer Poco el Mono Ara having missed out on Cup of Harmony qualification and leaving him at a bit of a loose end. He’ll probably end up spending much of his tenure making phone calls, but he and assistant Gerard Ronnevig bring, it rather goes without saying, bags of experience in Candelariasian football. The big question is whether it was at the right end, with Espinoza unused to having to deal with a relegation struggle. He’ll have to learn on the job pretty quickly if he doesn’t want to leave a severe blot on his copybook around these parts, following the disappointing manner of his final days at Solidarity.

There won’t be anything very much in the way of 3-6-1s, though. So that’s all that really mattered.

Ins and outs dominated the headlines elsewhere too – with Turkish themselves unveiling Fernando Lori, the Pasargian international, who apparently had been on their books all along, and that’s why they were able to bring someone in mid-season against all preestablished convention. Apparently they just loaned him back to Club Stein-los to allow him to complete their successful title challenge. Which isn’t fishy at all, especially given that it’s Stein-los Turkish they’re supposed to be chummy with. But let’s not ask questions, eh? Second biggest club in the land, and all that.

*sigh*

Meanwhile over in Melin, the typically vocal Radyukevich travelling support were keen to have their voices heard following Zachary Adekunde’s shock move to Hane Davies’ Ciudad Soluca. The fee remains undisclosed (cor, there’s a stunner), but it’s all more indication that the Jukos are really not on a sound footing financially these days – and perhaps, with giant wages and a lengthy contract, the board are simply cutting their losses now ahead of another horribly damaging relegation. Tommy Tohver was able to put a brave face on it, following a decent away win for the Jukos’ third of the season, by pointing out that he does have a helluva lot of young strikers to work with, but Adekunde is a World Cup winner, let’s not forget (literally, really, given his game-changing showing at the WC45 final… which we won, have we mentioned that lately?), and he’ll be massively missed.

Amidst all this scandal and misery, let’s celebrate a bright spot – the return from injury of Drunn Deleks! Woo, yeah! He came on as a sub and promptly bagged a brace, sending Tenderville on their way to a comfortable victory over the Indies and back up to third. Mm, the sweet smell of Nethertopian success. Don’t you just love it?

Matchday Twenty… Rejoice! Christ is come! We have a shiny new leader!

That being Green Island Zapata Football Club, don’tchaknow. The reigning champions laboured to victory in Abiodun, but the brilliance of those lasses Jhanna Young and An… Ainer… Agath… Michelle Durosa saw them past the assorted Cafundelenses and Secristianians of Gamboa and back to the top of the table. From where, one suspects, they’re going to take a hell of a lot of budging.

Back-to-back league titles haven’t been a recurring feature of the CMSC’s international era, by any means. Caires City achieved it under Dannat, of course, and Albrecht FC celebrated the historical arrival of Naoki Tonnelier back in XXV by taking their third title in a row, but otherwise it’d be a pretty earth-shattering achievement. The fact that the GIZ first team features no fewer than four women hasn’t escaped anyone’s attention and, despite MarquezOW’s form dipping quite considerable since they went and picked up two young ladies before the start of the Apertura, it sets an example that plenty of clubs are more than likely going to be looking to follow sooner rather than later.

As far as Candelariasians go, it’s hard to look beyond Beth Nicholls at Portuguese and Lisa Walker at the Indies. Both have done sterling work, with the former not all that far from the senior C&M squad by all accounts, but they truly don’t have too many peers around to make a real bid from the Blue… Women, or whatever they’re called, at the women’s football come the Olympics a particularly probably proposition. They are coming through however, thanks to the work of the CAMAFA and a small cadre of clubs – mostly, it must be said, in north-east Candelaria – who have made genuine attempts to invest in the local community’s XX talent, but we can only guess at whether any of them will prove able to live alongside their male counterparts in the future. Midfielders Emma Jenkins and Saeunn Zipperling have shown promise at KT Hotspur; Joanna Gustavsson has shown flecks of talent at centre-half for in the Caires City reserves but appears unlikely to slip past her elder colleague Tiffany Gilroy and become anything close to a first-team regular; while Mikayla Talich and Naomi Carter are part of Caires Sports’ huge great squad but probably lack a certain ethnic heritage to have much chance of impressing Dula… er, Alhrem. Obviously I meant Alhrem.

You can also throw Amy Idle into the mix at Radyukevich, and she even got a game this weekend – albeit coming in the form of three minutes at the end with the Jukos chucking quite liderally everyone up front in order to chase a three-goal deficit at the Dome. And for the sake of completeness; Emily Pak is getting games for CandelariaAM, where Tianna McCallum is one of a whole host of central defenders with a potentially half-decent future ahead of them. Cathedral City, their rivals for the CMSC2 title and promotion, appear to have developed a neat line in lady goalies (yeah, I had a good ol’ giggle when I found out too), with Erika Larreneta Ibanez considered an even better prospect than Adeliz Giménez. Oh, and Georgia Kennedy plays the sweeper role for Turks’ Club.

The point, which probably would’ve been better left for a DBC article, or summat, but we’ve got this far now and might as well persevere with, is that they’re there… but that as a country C&M has a long, long way to go to emulate the experiences of so many of their foreign rivals in integrating the talent of 51% of their population. CAMAFA dictacts can only take us so far – with some pundits even suggesting that a lower-league club should be bought out and set up as an entirely female side in order to guarantee first-team opportunities for all these whiny bints. But if and when we do achieve something close to parity, we’re going t’be pretty damn unstoppable! Ha! HA!

*yawns*

Er, where were we? Oh yeah. Green Island are proper trend-setters, nine points ahead of where they were this time last season, and seemingly set to ease towards the title. Elsewhere, Tenderville won the Nethertopian derby and James Hannah looks set to walk out at the City of Bove Stadium. Possibly they’ll bring in a Quodite instead. That’d be what most sensible clubs’d do. But this is the Smudgers we’re talking about. They’ll probably go and get Abdoulaye Soro instead.

Matchday Twenty-One… Rejoice! Christ is come! We have a shiny new leader!

One week on from being anointed champions-in-waiting by a few of the more hyperactive journos in this great land of ours, Green Island slip into second after being held by Portuguese.

No-one back in Zapata will be too worried about it all (to be fair, they’ve got slightly bigger things to worry about at the moment, but anyway…), since it was only really thanks to the outstanding William Romero Fernández in the home side’s goal that they weren’t four or five up before half-time. Equally impressively, the fullbacks Raviranjan and Paterson were able to join their Vanorian counterparts in keeping Portuguese’s handy attack line mousy quiet until the game’s dying stages – and a fine finish on his first start from Andrew Jackson. Propping up the right side in place of the injured Beth Nicholls (this is what happens when you entrust key roles to members of the delicate sex, people), Old Hickory looked understandably shaky throughout but took his one late chance with great composure. Oh, please say we’ve got a talented right-footed wide man coming through! Please!

Elsewhere, the Clotaire derby ended in a draw, and some other stuff happened.

As detailed below.

AFC MN Smith 2-2 El din Marbles (Fowler 62, Harrison 67; Ricky 5, González 90+3)

Matchday Twenty-Two… Rejoice! Throw another shrimp on the barbie! We have a shiny new le…

No, wait… wait… No there isn’t. Sorry.

Instead, we suddenly have a bit of an opening out as far as the title race is concerned, with Portuguese holding City goalless – a really impressive display from a potentially rather shaky side defensively, and a further warning that Marquez’s best side of the moment are going to mean business next term – and, in one of the biggest games of the season, the Scorpions taking all three points and a clean sheet away from their trip to Zapata.

This one really was unexpected, but you do honestly have to tip your hat to Luís Enrique Torrealba and his assistant Kim Daeeui. While few supporters or the board itself could publicly suggest that the new management team was expected to genuinely give top domestic honours a bloody good try on the very first season – especially amid an obvious era of transition and rebuilding and whatnot – any Albrecht FC boss of the future who can summon up the courage to plough through the club’s exhaustive wiki page before signing himself to the TSS/MSS dugout will remain all-too aware that both Trevor Organ and Andy Le Lan managed to guide the club to the CMSC title in their debut seasons. One can argue that it was a different era back then, with the likes of Gamboa and Castillo fading away and big money from domestic and foreign investment, and TQCC runs, yet to flood into the coffers of their various modern rivals – but the pressure the new management duo are under, without anyone really enunciating fully before – is pretty damn enormous.

I’ve enunciated it, granted. Just then. But I’m dangerous, me. I’ll say what I want. Grrrrr.

Aaaanyway, point is, this rag-tag group probably shouldn’t be beating any side with ol’ Espy in it, but are, or at least did, this weekend in fact, which is why we’re talking about it. Back to within five points of the lead, you absolutely cannot rule them out.

Elsewhere, Turkish are up to fifth and MarquezOW are into the top half, after sending Will Medlin to defeat on his first outing at the helm of MN Smith. And no, no that name shouldn’t mean anything to you. He’s the Smudgers’ academy boss person, thrust somewhat unwillingly into management on the basis that, if they’re going to go down and face utter financial ruin and, at best, a miserable existence spent outside the CMSC1 for the next couple of decades, they might as well do it with a proper Bove man in charge.

Rather than a Quodite, anyway. They could’ve gone and got a Quodite. I said they should’ve gone and got a Quodite. But does anyone listen to me? Do they heck.

Matchday Twenty-Three… The final weekend before the World Cup break (yes, yes, alright… but it was. Shut up.) brought us thrills a-plenty, ho-boy yes, and it’s just a frightful shame we can’t go into it in any great detail. D’you want a tissue? I’ve got tissues, somewhere…

We leave our merrie league in the midst of the return legs of that that big clump of big matches we had, ooh, about this time during the Apertura – and with Albrecht FC well and truly emerging as the major beneficiaries of this little period. Their victory over Caires City that moved them to within two points of the lead came courtesy of a well-taken brace from Kim Mihyeon – only her fifth and sixth league goals of the season, but they certainly came at a crucial time to allow the experienced young woman to outfox the impressive but still clearly somewhat green Starblaydi teenager George Rosenthal (or at least, he was a teenager last time we checked. He’s probably collecting his pension by now). Nic Lloyd pulled one back with a lovely weaving run and shot late on, but the Scorpions were already home and dry.

Thence to Saturday when the other Caires club hosted Green Island. The Knights found themselves a goal behind after just five minutes, through the unlikely boot of Campbell Raviranjan (who isn’t Yaforite, but may possibly be of Sterogan decent all of a sudden), but they were fortunate that Ahershk Valinial soon decided to have his best game in quite liderally years. His first-half brace doesn’t do his overall performance justice, and fires a warning shot off Andy Le Lan’s bow ahead of his country’s forthcoming (eh) WC47 meeting with C&M. The GIZ’s defence, including the aforementioned Raviranjan, simply couldn’t deal with him and fell to their second straight defeat – leaving them just a point ahead of Tenderville.

Elsewhere, three big relegation clashes saw the away teams hold the balance of power – with Gamboa stopping the rot with their first win of the Clausura, and Mayo Valley inching up to twelfth and eleven points from the drop zone with three big points in Melin. The Marbles eased past NAPPC however, with the Nethertopians just starting to look a little wobbly and Espinoza’s side increasingly looking set to wave the bottom three goodbye.

Albrecht FC 2-1 Caires City (Kim M. 33 and 71; Lloyd 90+2)

Caires Sports 3-2 Green Island (Valinial 20 and 32, Raviranjan og 44; Raviranjan 5, Ealovaul 75)
El din Marbles 2-0 NAPPC (Ricky 7 and 70)

CMS Cup Last Sixteen… A brief dip into Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday’s fixtures before we, er, go… with the pick of the bunch being, with grim inevitability, an impromptu capital city derby.

I can’t count how many times the Scorpions and Turkish have met in this competition over the last few years (no, really, I can’t… I mean I could, technically, but that would be a truly damning indictment on my lifestyle choices), but it’s probably rather a lot. When the ball-plucking does hand us this match there tends to be incident, with a healthy big brawl at half-time providing this season’s story.

In a year where pretty much everyone has been stunningly well-behaved (it helps that CandelariaAM were relegated, mind you), this one rather came out of the blue – with a dreadful decision by ref Ted Garrido to grant Albrecht FC a free-kick deep into first-half injury time following a theatrical dive from Nakatsuru. The C&M midfielder had the decency to apologise for it, post-match, but he looks set to escape without sanction (partly because no-one’s ever been too sure quite how such a system works for the CMS Cup, with neither the CMSC nor the CAMAFA claiming responsibility for sorting out the refereeing in this particular competition), and any retroactive decision won’t in any case do Albrecht Turkish much good. By the time Foster had swung the set-piece strongly past Seb Moon, Turkish were three-nil down – their little Clausura revolution coming to a leaden thump. They protested, pushing ensued, Fernando Lori was spat on by Matthew Logan, John Yeoman said something unkind about William’s missus… ooh, it were angry scenes, Mrs Smoczynski, the likes of which we have not seen for many a year, and had dearly hoped not to again. And such forth. Never mind.

So, the holders march on to the quarter-finals once more, with a historic threepeat potentially on the cards – and they’ll be helped by the absence of Green Island. Massimo’s record as a cup boss with Hondo has yet to take shape in Candelariasian football, and the GIZ – who haven’t made the final since XXV – will have another lengthy wait after an appalling first-half display in Zapata, against Tenderville. That was in the replay, after Deleks had scored three minutes after the ninety to hand the Dragons a three-all draw at home, but their performance in the return fixture was superb. Targeting those unfortunate Green Island fullbacks again, as well as aiming to pepper Ciaran Stockley’s goal with as many shots as possible, they made a mockery of their own recent indifferent form and helped continue the GIZ’s own dire spell with a three-nil drubbing.

Elsewhere, a slew of familiar cup teams made in through to the last eight, including XXXII champions MarquezOW, XXIX winners the Marbles, and XXVII… victors, say, KT Hotspur. Both Clotaire sides remain in the hunt, while the last remaining CMSC1 club are Matt Sampson’s Brayton Town, the northern Candelarians through after a solid victory at an under-strength Gamboa.

Matchday Twenty-Four… Aaaand back! Wasn’t that quick? ‘Tis like we never went away or anything.

A brief update while we remain in the mid-Clausura lull, with most of the big guns coming a-cropper, one way or another. This really isn’t a grave shock, given that the World Cup and Cup of Harmony semi-finalists are all still away and the rest of the returnees very much part of the ranks of the walking wounded, so you can probably discount this particular weekend as an important barometer as to the rest of the season.

However… It can’t be ignored that neither Green Island nor Caires City are in cracking form at the moment, with Dionísio’s Errant Knights unable to fully take advantage of the ginormous holes left by va Drake and Durosa, and escaping from Zapata with just a point. Interestingly, Albrecht FC and Tenderville United both went down to away defeats in the north-east of Candelaria, meaning that a teensy-weensy tiny door may just have been opened for Albrecht Turkish – with the Millermen now nine points off the lead. Their cause might’ve been helped, mind you, if they handed gone and conceded twice in stoppage time against a gutted PoC…

Elsewhere, some key results towards the bottom saw Gamboa held by the Indies, Melin & Nader take a point in El din, and MN Smith completing a trio of one-all draws against Portuguese. Still four points from safety despite Radyukevich’s hopeless tumble towards oblivion, the Smudgers were forced to take the field without Peter Rogers, though given his general form this season that’s probably no bad thing. With a bit of luck, both he and Littlefellow will return from Newmanistan all victorious like, full of the joys of Spring and ready to take up the challenge of keeping their club afloat with renewed vigour. In the here and now though, the Bove faithful will feel that this week’s were two points lost – with Portuguese’s midfield battered by injuries and international duty, Panadero was forced to delve into his thin squad and rely on bench warmer Spencer Jones and teenager Francisco Martinez (no relation… random nameinators, it happens), who both acquitted themselves impressively enough, though MN Smith aren’t exactly the gold standard by which to test this sort of thing…

The aforementioned Jukos, for what it’s worth, are seriously in the soup now after a home defeat to Mayo Valley. As much the bigger club, the lilacs’s struggles will be the bigger story domestically, but Mayo really do deserve warm applause at the very least. Sitting on thirty-two points they look pretty much safe and not all that far from a Globe Cup tilt, playing pleasant enough football all the while and generally winning a surprising number of friends. As for Zachary Telemans, he’s the first CMSC manager to really work out what to do with Samuka Szatmári, while the performances of the three Toyur internationals summon to mind the great old days when Candelariasian clubs were more willing to give players straight outta the BoF a fair crack of the whip.

Manny Warren, the captain and left winger, is worthy of respect as well – though he scored his first league goal only this weekend, his assists for both Szatmári and Witt have been invaluable and he’s now a proper cult favourite, and respected as a proper statesman in these parts despite being Taeshani and, when it comes to it, as black as your hat. His lucrative tax exemptions as a foreign player have seen him invest in local communities, with half the cottagers (if you will) around the Hodgehill area living, as the song goes, in a Manny Warren house. His own palatial mansion currently appears to house half the disabled children in the region, granted, but we’ve all got our vices. Otherwise, he’s a thoroughly proper chap.

I just think that’s nice.

AFC MN Smith 1-1 Arrigo Portuguese (Small 28; Martinez 61)
Albrecht Turkish 2-2 Port of Clotaire (Tashkir 33, Vostakova 71; Ham 90+2, Owen 90+4)
Caires Sports 1-0 Tenderville United (Belmore 60)
El din Marbles 1-1 Melin & Nader (Tollison 80; Silva 86)
Gamboa FC 1-1 Albrecht Independent FC (Lacerda 73; Kenroe 46)
Green Island 2-2 Caires City (Anwamanë 19 and 77; Williams 1, González 45+1)
KT Hotspur 2-1 Albrecht FC (Dariegan 26 and 32; William 20)
NAPPC 1-2 Marquez-Onwere (Taylor 44; Souto Maior 5, Pappas 75)
Radyukevich CSC 1-2 Mayo Valley (Paganel 70; Szatmári 7, Warren 17)

Matchday Twenty-Five… Ghagh, where to look!? So much to say, so few paragraphs in which to do it. Uhm… Caires derby, then. Let’s start there.

So, the big nattering post-match surrounded Anamer Tascarnin’s laughably awful challenge on Freedom Weller, a thirty year-old centre-half whose entire career has been spent on the City bench (barring joyful loan spells here and there at the Scruggs Picking Sharks, and whatnot). Their clash came in a crowded penalty area (the Knights’, for what it’s worth) and went unnoticed by the ref, but the Yaforite has since been retroactively banned for three matches. Caires Sports have plenty more defender where he comes from though, and his new punishment won’t help Caires City’s cause muchly – after they went down two-nil at home to their mummies and daddies from the docks. And with life-long CSC supporters scoring the goals as well! Lovely stuff.

And so the lead changes hands once more, with the GIZ easily skating past a still not-at-all-good KT Hotspur; youngster Jameson Aldren bagging a brace on a rare start and helping to ease any nerves that Green Island are about to crumble any time soon. But the race is nothing if not still plenty hot, and that’s largely down to the marauding presence of the team in third – Tenderville United.

Oh, it’s just not fair.

Certainly Turkish have reason to mutter such sentences under their breath, after they went down three-nil at home to the Dragons in one of the least three-nilly three-nils you’re ever likely to see. Small comfort to those who care about our national game not becoming dominated by a foreign club, I’ll grant you, but at least we can rest comfortable in our beds that this state of affairs absolutely, definitely cannot last.

Please…?

Meanwhile, huh? of the day went off in Bove, where MN Smith – still without the Quodites and missing ‘keeper Kevin Mirakel for what looks like being the rest of the season – somehow contrived to pick up a desmond against Albrecht FC and send the Scorpions back down to fourth.

AFC MN Smith 2-2 Albrecht FC (Small 3, Lewis 72; Wanderley 17, Nakatsuru 45+2)
Albrecht Turkish 0-3 Tenderville United (Kuypers 38, Gaggioli 62, Prescott 80)
Arrigo Portuguese 1-0 Albrecht Independent FC (Macanás 40)
Caires City 0-2 Caires Sports (Belmore 27, Sinjinir 65)
Green Island 3-1 KT Hotspur (Aldren 26 and 45, Anwamanë 65; Dariegan 70)
Mayo Valley 0-0 Port of Clotaire
Melin & Nader 1-3 Marquez-Onwere (Herbert 28; Joãio 66 and 81, Sáez 69)
NAPPC 1-0 Gamboa FC (González Rodríguez 28)
Radyukevich CSC 1-1 El din Marbles (Davis 47; Hawker 35)

Matchday Twenty-Six… Oh, for the love of chastity! Doesn’t anybody want to win this!?

Eight games to spare and City are back to the top of the pile after comfortably disposing of the Spur. As for everyone else, it was pretty much draws all round in some of the least likely of locales.

MN Smith now have twelve ties for their season, and just two victories. That isn’t very good, but astonishingly they could still stay up and may come to worship the point picked up at home to the GIZ this weekend. Green Island’s reliance on their World Cupping Vanorians was perfectly plain for all to see once more, with the lightweight trio of Anwamanë, Ealovaul and Young entirely unable to break their way through the makeshift Smudgers defence protected by Marcel van der Laan, and stand-in ‘keeper Lee Brown seldom troubled throughout a ninety spent largely in MN Smith’s half of the pitch.

Albrecht FC could claim little better from their visit to the less prosperous half of Hoxton, failing to add to the Indies’ sweetly pathetic record of nineteen league defeats. Even that means that the top four are separated by just four points, while Turkish – despite a goalless draw with Caires Sports – aren’t all that far behind. If nothing else, they’re currently level with Tenderville and MarquezOW for the Clausura trophy, if that matters remotely. To… anyone.

AFC MN Smith 0-0 Green Island
Albrecht Independent FC 1-1 Albrecht FC (Kenroe 64; Nakatsuru 38)
Caires Sports 0-0 Albrecht Turkish
Gamboa FC 3-0 Melin & Nader (Tollison 16, Lacerda 26, Gómez 90)
KT Hotspur 0-2 Caires City (Richardson 25, Jones 46)
Marquez-Onwere 1-1 Radyukevich CSC (Sáez 11; B. Clayton 43)
Mayo Valley 0-0 Tenderville United
NAPPC 0-1 Arrigo Portuguese (Lacamoire 50)
Port of Clotaire 2-2 El din Marbles (Ham 28, O’Airmeadhaigh 81; Jimenez 21, Ricky 23)

Matchday Twenty-Seven… *Ahem*

New leaders again, then…

Objectively speaking, Caires City would probably have rather played just about anyone other than MN Smith this weekend. The Smudgers under Will Medlin are on a sweetly implausible run of draws right now, and once again were on hand to offer similar treatment to a disappointingly toothless City. Dionísio’s big miss was that of Salvador González, rather the forgotten man among attack-minded Candelariasian midfielders but an outside shout for Player of the Season. Injured inside five minutes, the Errant Knights looked shadows of themselves without the twenty-four year-old’s creativity, with the emergency front pairing of Richardson and Williams clearly badly lacking the necessary telepathy and the anorexic nature of their squad laid bare for all to see.

With Hindenberg still away, they were fortunate indeed that Russ Becker was continuing his much-improved form with a string of saves against Arnold Postman, and it’s not frankly ridiculous that MN Smith have still won just twice all season. Player-for-player they’re still crap-in-a-hat, but under Medlin they look quite the different side – and it probably helps that the recently former Academy boss could call upon his own YTS products in the form of Brown, Jamie Small, centre-half Leon Tiller and seventeen year-old striker Alex Budden. Were it not for their increasingly regrettable policy of sending kids off to Wow!, they could be home and dry by now.

As it is, the race to avoid the drop looks like being a five-way tussle (assuming that the Indies are indeed already down, a five-nil drubbing by new leaders Green Island going some way to indicating just that). From the CMSC’s perspective, they’d dearly love to see MN Smith and Melin & Nader go back from whence they came, with the Jukos and the still-in-real-trouble Marbles much the bigger draws in terms of telly revenue and sponsorship and that, but they’re certainly going to struggle to get their wish. For Radyukevich, they’ll be completing the season without Tommy Tohver, for one thing – the former Albrecht FC target throwing in the towel following a two-nil home defeat to Gamboa, an exit grudgingly accepted by Patrick Whelehan and the board.

Where they go from here is anyone’s guess. It’d be just like them to bring in Coleman Mustard for one more shot, but as far as most of the supporters go there’s just a horrible conviction that it simply doesn’t matter anymore. They may only be two points from safety – and have twenty-one points available, double their current tally – and have a squad far better, one would suggest, than any of their immediate neighbours, but the sense of inevitability that hung low over their previous recent relegations is pervading the air around Pope Hill once more.

It’s poo, but there you go.

Albrecht FC 2-0 NAPPC (Wanderley 62, Kim M. 89)
Caires City 0-0 AFC MN Smith
Green Island 5-0 Albrecht Independent FC (Raviranjan 7, Saunderson 42, Mulder 45 and 57, Young 87)
KT Hotspur 1-1 Caires Sports (Smith 10; Valinial 56)
Marquez-Onwere 1-1 Port of Clotaire (Souto Maior 15; Ham 34)
Mayo Valley 0-2 Albrecht Turkish (Innisvale 6, Lori 24)
Melin & Nader 1-0 Arrigo Portuguese (Enría 90)
Radyukevich CSC 0-2 Gamboa FC (Lacerda 5 and 7)
Tenderville United 2-1 El din Marbles (Kuypers 11 and 80; Hawker 45+1)

Matchday Twenty-Eight… They brought in Coleman Mustard for one more shot.

*sigh*

Now granted, that didn’t come entirely out of the blue. Mustard did succeed in keeping them up during his previous short spell, albeit only by a single point and thanks to the CMSC1’s move from a sixteen to an eighteen-team division. And he has been hanging around as Academy director, playing a major role in bringing through the likes of Paganel, Ben Clayton and the general host of attacking talent squatting on the bench or elsewhere. Even if they do go down, they should have the firepower to bounce straight back up without breaking the bank and risking the long-term solvency of a once-great club, and the near-legendary Mustard – with the ear of the squad’s young guns and older hands alike – may be just the man to do it. Even if he doesn’t have the first clue about tactics and stuff. Since when’ve they ever been important, eh?

As for the here and now though, his opening XXXV game ended in a thirteenth draw of the season, at home to Portuguese. Panadero’s side are cruising at this point – they could still grab a TQCC spot, but Turkish’s form would suggest otherwise and the Marquezians’ own injury nightmares mean that they’ve basically thrown up their collective hands in exasperation and readied themselves for the next round of ICCs instead – and Mustard might well have expected better from his debut, but at least it keeps the Jukos in touch.

Beneath them, MN Smith drew yet again while the Marbles fell at home to Turkish to remain still nine points behind NAPPC and barely outside the danger zone. Espinoza is clearly doing the best he can with a dispirited squad, but must be wondering why he took this job at all following this flaccid defeat to his former side. Apart from money and that, obviously. Soothes the pain, you have to admit.

Nothing much will soothe Caires City’s pain though, for this weekend we saw a major turning point in the title race. With Hindenberg not back until next weekend, City were taken apart by… by… ohgodjustsayit, thenitwillallbeoverwith… by Albrecht Independent FC.

Oh yes. In only their second victory of the whole bloody season, the Indies’ Taeshani winger Tyler Kenroe tucked home from a hashed clearance by Austin Neal in the ninety-first minute to seal a three-two win over Dionísio’s men and leave them four points behind the leaders Green Island – and behind Tenderville United on goal difference, too.

It’s certainly not all over yet, but with va Drake and Durosa due back next weekend the GIZ are starting to look all ominous again, and Albrecht FC’s goalless draw with Melin & Nader won’t help anyone’s hopes of seeing the CMSC trophy leave C&M for the second season in a row. And now the top two aren’t from these parts either!

What’s the point of it all, at the end of the day?

Bah.

AFC MN Smith 0-0 KT Hotspur
Albrecht FC 0-0 Melin & Nader
Albrecht Independent FC 3-2 Caires City (Dennin 16, Rogers 45+1, Kenroe 90+1; Agostinho 57, Williams 76)
Caires Sports 1-1 Mayo Valley (Lawrence og 72; Tillström 51)
El din Marbles 0-1 Albrecht Turkish (Bakker 45)
Gamboa FC 1-1 Port of Clotaire (Jorge Roberto 80; Sánchez García 75)
Marquez-Onwere 2-2 Tenderville United (Sáez 64, Pappas 67; Deleks 20, Jans 62)
NAPPC 0-4 Green Island (Young 34 and 87, Anwamanë 45, Osborne 56)
Radyukevich CSC 1-1 Arrigo Portuguese (J. Clayton 41; Nicholls 14)

CMS Cup Quarter-Finals… B’bye, hopes-of-a-threepeat. T’was nice while it lasted.

For Scorpions supporters, anyway, who had been beginning to turn their eyes away from Albrecht FC’s dwindling title hopes and towards a third straight victory in the CMS Cup instead. Port of Clotaire had other ideas. With the Sortherners back and Muscat knowing that even a Globe Cup spot from the league might be beyond them, their second-ever domestic knock-out trophy was suddenly top priority, and it really did show from their performance. Twice coming back from a goal down, this was a vintage Harpies display at the MSS; a fully deserved three-two victory that puts the PoC in a very rare semi-final and with a chance of securing not only the first trophy since the XXII season but a first ICC tilt since the TQCC2 preliminary round.

Favourites for the cup are Tenderville United however, with last season’s defeated finalists winning easily in Onwere, but they face solid challenges from two more proper cup sides from recent years – KT Hotspur, with Juan Carlos Revault really needing to win this one to retain much hope of keeping his job, while the Marbles can yet become the first club since Mayo Valley to win the CMS Cup in the same season they suffered relegation from the top-flight.

Albrecht FC 2-3 Port of Clotaire (Kim M. 13 and 22; Van Dijk 14 and 24, Edwards 87)
KT Hotspur 1-0 Brayton Town (R Smith 59)
Marquez-Onwere 0-2 Tenderville United (Reargold 34, Night 66)
Radyukevich CSC 0-1 El din Marbles (Horrigan 64)

Okay, so we fibbed. MD32 is where it gets matter-y. Sorry.

Matchday Twenty-Nine… They may see their clubs win the title, but the assembled quitealotitudes at the McNeil Bingo Arena and the Home of the Dragon at least had something crow about this weekend – with the triumphant return of Tuomas Hindenberg and Francisco Martinez, with World Cup winners’ medals in hand and really rather smug expressions.

The days when Candelariasian fans would pathetically cosy up to anyone from a national team with even a hope in hell of winning on a global stage are long gone, of course, but Hindenburg is a really rather popular figure in these parts (wearing very much a spiritual armband, with yer Liventian fella Marshall having been handed the actual strip of cloth quite some time ago) and, more to the point, any opportunity to wave their champion in Green Island’s face just cries out to be taken. What is more, these past few weeks have reminded them just how much they need the veteran centre-half – Hindenburg played only the last forty minutes with City already cruising against NAPPC, but his mere presence makes his countryman Rosenthal a different player and he dealt expertly enough with Daniel González Rodríguez.

Tenderville’s poor, impoverished Nethies, on the other hand, will grab any possible chance to breathe in the reflected glory of one of their adopted own, and poor old Martinez looked absolutely exhausted following his umpteenth celebratory lap around the pitch. Quite what Hanutaut Lilithian made of the proceedings is anyone’s guess, on her own, empty-handed return to Rushmore.

Gloria Villasenior also has a nice bit of shiny, but a parade of her own is probably pushing things a bit (although they do really like a parade in Onwere… she’ll have to slot herself in between the ducks). Unlike the glorious celebratory three-nils experienced by the other two self-satisfied Starblaydis, Villasenior was straight back into the action and, in the eighty-ninth minute, provided a costly slip for Fernando Lori to squeeze past and cross into the box; Werner happening to be in the right place to put a toe on the ball and knock the winner past Amern S’toris.

The result keeps Turkish in the box seat for the fourth TQCC place, while the three Globe Cup spots look sewn up despite MarquezOW’s slip – with Caires Sports ending MN Smith’s run of draws a minute into injury time, Portuguese leaving a once-promising PoC glumly mid-table (seriously, third in the world? Are you kidding me?), and Mayo Valley the best of the rest after west Candelaria’s very own Madonna scored the decisive goal against the god-awful Marbles (A.F.F. are after Hawker, I’m reliably informed… what the hell do the stick in the water supply out Abadia way?).

The Indies drew again, btw. Still only the -46 goal difference.

AFC MN Smith 0-1 Caires Sports (Littlefellow og 90+1)
Albrecht Turkish 1-0 Marquez-Onwere (Werner 89)
Arrigo Portuguese 2-1 Port of Clotaire (Wilson 16, Nicholls 57; Sánchez García 76)
Caires City 3-0 NAPPC (Agostinho 23, Connah 45+2, Lloyd 72)
KT Hotspur 1-1 Albrecht Independent FC (Dariegan 80; Dennin 75)
Mayo Valley 1-0 El din Marbles (Warren 65)
Melin & Nader 0-1 Green Island (va Drake 64)
Radyukevich CSC 0-2 Albrecht FC (Nakatsuru 20 and 62)
Tenderville United 3-0 Gamboa FC (Reargold 34, Lewis 41, Night 45)

Matchday Thirty… Four rounds to go, and five sides still left in the hunt.

Turkish, of course, can pretty much count themselves out – and frankly they’re insanely lucky to be comfortable in fifth in the first place – and it looks almost equally set that the other half (or third, or one seventh, or…) of the capital is going to miss out too. Because this weekend saw the Scorpions scrape their way to another draw and slip seven points behind Green Island – far from a mammoth divide, but it’s not easy to see the GIZ giving away that kind of points tally in the final few games.

Except…

It’s a facet of the way the champions play that one can never be completely at ease. This weekend they found themselves two-one down at home to Radyukevich, and had to rely on Jhanna Young’s through-balls to Anwamanë rather than the listless Durosa and va Drake to ultimately trot to a comfortable four-two victory, and their run-in is by no means that simple – Port of Clotaire next weekend is something of a gimmee with the CMS Cup semis foremost in the Harpies’ minds, but there’s Turkish and Tenderville to come and Mayo Valley on the final day, so there’s still plenty to lose.

Caires City should be the main beneficiaries, but they too are hardly cooking with gas as we reach the business-end of the season – Anthony Jones, not for the first time, proving their saviour in injury time to crush Melin & Nader’s homes and allow los italianos to slip into the bottom three. Nathanial Ferrero’s side had troubled Dionísio’s all afternoon, with Hindenberg producing two goal line clearances from young countryman Rodrigo Silva and City seldom giving Seth Uskokovic much to worry about. But they’re clinging on, and with a bit of luck we should yet get an entertaining final day…

Doon beloo, meanwhile, AFC MN Smith won a game.

Granted, it was at the Indies, but their third victory of the entire season saw them sweep up the table to the dizzy heights of fifteenth, beyond the drop zone on goal difference. A valuable point for the Marbles keeps them two ahead, but it still looks set to be three from five – with NAPPC holding the Spur and looking almost snug now nine points ahead of the strugglers.

Albrecht Independent FC 1-2 AFC MN Smith (Delara 90; Timpson 16, Lewis 89)
Albrecht Turkish 3-1 Gamboa FC (Innisvale 57 and 72, Yeoman 76; Zanirato 51)
Caires City 1-0 Melin & Nader (Jones 90+2)
El din Marbles 1-1 Caires Sports (Erwin Visser 80; Belmore 75)
Green Island 4-2 Radyukevich CSC (Dorack 20, Anwamanë 62 and 64 and 80; J. Clayton 34, McDermott 41)
KT Hotspur 1-1 NAPPC (Nilsson 45; González Rodríguez 87)
Marquez-Onwere 3-2 Mayo Valley (Souto Maior 14 and 41, Sáez 72; Witt 5, Warren 32)
Port of Clotaire 1-1 Albrecht FC (Ham 42; Foster 53)
Tenderville United 1-1 Arrigo Portuguese (Deleks 78; Castro 72)

Matchday Thirty-One… What a difference a day makes. Twenty-four little hours, brought the sun and the flowers, where there used to be rain (that’s a Candelariasian August, for you). My yesterdays were blue, dear, but now… now it’s all black.

Impoverished at the back though they be, with the same defensive record as MN Smith; Green Island simply have it going orn up front. And truly, it’s ominous. In the long term, the one hope for the rest of the league may be that old Espy decides to do a Roger (a curious turn of phrase, but bear with us) and returns to the EPL, for preference taking wotzername Durosa with him. Otherwise, people are very slowly cottoning on, he could be at the GIZ forever. And while he remains at the height of his powers there’s no reason to suppose he won’t be a dominant figure in these parts for years to come.

What is more however, the age of Young and Anwamanë, the relative youth of Saunderson, Mulder and even Gerzson Illés, the potential of Jameson Aldren and Jacob Pond, the fact that this football club will sooner or late have the pick of their home island’s potentially vast number of young talents… it all spells Dynasty, and you can’t spell Dynasty with Nasty. No-one wants to see a repeat of Albrecht FC’s five titles in six seasons, or for the CMSC to ultimately go the same way as the TSL, or whatever. Particularly not when they’re basically a bunch of foreigners…

Too early to get all jumpy? Probably, but for now at least Massimo’s men and women have a hand on their second straight title – after Caires City could take but a draw against Radyukevich and fell six points behind. The Errant Knights’ performance really has been awesome this year, particularly in Dionísio’s first season in management, but their weak links have been starting to show of late – Massimo Iampietro chiefly among them, with the Kura-Pellandi full-back likely to move on at the end of the year and a reshuffle set to shift Rosenthal to the left and hand Hindenburg a shiny new partner from somewhere-or-other. For now, Iampietro was made to look a proper prune by Jukos mainstay Wayne Davis twice during the first half, and only late on could the increasingly impressive Leo Williams force home the equaliser for two-two.

Time for some good news? Tenderville are pretty much out of it bar the shouting, needing a miracle from the final three rounds after going down three-two at the MSS. The week’s big fixture saw the Scorpions come from an early Drunn Deleks penalty down to take the three points that just about keep them alive, thanks in part to a fine performance from teenager Rhys Khan in place of the injured Ben Zec on what could have been a rather nervy debut.

Meanwhile, we can finally bid a fond farewell to Albrecht Independent, who let a goal in inside seventy seconds against Caires Sports and promptly declared their interest in this season at a close. They won’t be missed; Radyukevich might be – with their point at City just not enough with the Marbles and MN Smith both taking big victories. Finally, and with both clubs safe as houses but unlikely to snatch Globe Cup berths, the end-of-season silly-season got underway with a four-all draw between Mayo and Gamboa.

Albrecht FC 3-2 Tenderville United (Khan 23, Lilithian og 64, Kim M. 70; Deleks 3, Night 66)
Albrecht Independent FC 0-1 Caires Sports (Sinjinir 1)
Arrigo Portuguese 1-2 Albrecht Turkish (Randjelovic 80; Wilkinson og 28, Bakker 47)
Caires City 2-2 Radyukevich CSC (Williams 26 and 79; Paganel 26, Davis 44)
El din Marbles 2-1 Marquez-Onwere (Berecz 30, Herráez 82; Pappas 90+1)
Mayo Valley 4-4 Gamboa FC (Tillström 12, Warren 24, Coventry og 27, Witt 45+1; Chambers 4, Jorge Roberto 6 and 13, Lacerda 67)
Melin & Nader 1-1 KT Hotspur (Solaris 39; Smith 47)
NAPPC 0-1 AFC MN Smith (Postman 61)
Port of Clotaire 1-4 Green Island (Arrigorriagakoa 18; Durosa 23, Ealovaul 29, Illés 64, Mulder 77)

b]CMS Cup Semi-Finals…[/b] Verrrry briefly, because honestly… it’s the domestic cup for heaven’s sake, we have a final that will at least carry vague interest outside the Candelarias and across Rushmore – with Tenderville Utd back in the final for the second season in a row, and the cup run rather tongue-in-cheekily demanded of Espinoza by the Marbles’ Sargossan board completed against the Spur.

Matchday Thirty-two… Oh, hell-o! Well there’s a thing, you’ve turned up just in time for the goal-by-goal updates but, well… you’re two weeks early, frankly. I mean, nothing of note’s likely to happen this weekend, is it? Everyone knows all the big important stuff never happens until the final round of matches in the CMSC1, don’t they?

Don’t they…?

Minute 5 ~ Rubén Santos, the young Sargossan, finds himself in the midst of an overlapping move with countryman Francisco Cuesta. Past Alex Roberts, tees up a through-ball to the Newmanistanian Kevin Taylor, thinks better of it and shoots low past Stefan Santamaria. NAPPC 1, Albrecht Independent FC 0.

Minute 6 ~ See? We’re reporting on a match between one already-safe side, and one already-relegated one. Honestly, just quit while you’re ahead and come back in a fortnight.

Minute 7 ~ Go!

Minute 8 ~ Honest to God, you’ll thank yourself later.

Minute 12 ~ Hehehehe… Right, now all those part-time Penelopes have gone, let’s analyse the state of play. Green Island can win their second straight league title this weekend, should they get three points against fourth-place Tenderville and Caires City don’t do they same away at eleventh-place Port of Clotaire. Albrecht FC are still in with a sniff, a point behind City, but they need plenty to go their way and happen to have a visit to Solidarity to contend with this weekend. Tenderville, for their part, are nine points off the lead and need a series of miracles – as well as win this weekend.

Minute 13 ~ Still nothing, let’s crack on. Turkish and Caires Sports are battling it out for the fourth TQCC spot (assuming the league still warrants one, at this point), though Mannasuch’s men have a seven point advantage over the Knights. The Yaforites are certainly going back to the Globe Cup at least, along with Portuguese, but MarquezOW can yet be caught by Mayo Valley – seven points ahead, they’ll qualify with a victory at CSC or a Mayo defeat at home to Portuguese.

Minute 14 ~ Nothing can be settled at the bottom this weekend, but Radyukevich will be left needing a couple of ginormous wins from the final couple of weeks if they don’t manage to beat KT Hotspur and MN Smith can get three points in their relegation clash with Melin & Nader.

Minute 15 ~ Oh, and the Marbles can guarantee staying up if they win at Gamboa and there’s a result one way or t’other between the Smudgers and los italianos.

Minute 16 ~ So seriously, in the long term you’d be much better off just waiting unti–

Minute 17 ~ STOP! WOAH! OH! Wait a minute! Mister… and so forth. I lost heart. Er, Arnold Postman picks himself up from a Jon Barajas “tackle” in the box and gives MN Smith a huge boost in their fight to stay up. You’ve got to hand it to this Will Medlin bloke; he may not have had the slightest second of managerial experience since being lifted from the academy set-up, but he knows what he’s doing. Never did Elgin Dannat any harm, anyway…

Minute 19 ~ Handy goal for the once-beleaguered, now merely disappointing, MarquezOW – with Gabriel Macanás getting up above little Adam Palmer and nodding in for Portuguese at Mayo. After the naranja’s truly woeful Apertura, a Globe Cup place for next term represents a relatively sizable reward for their struggles.

Minute 20 ~ The CMSC Trophy is squatting somewhere safe in Marlow Park for a reason… as Gerzson Illés (no idea… Pasargian midfielder, apparently) rifles home a sweet volley past Mark Water. Green Island are there bar the shouting. And… eighty minutes, and stuff.

Minute 21 ~ Wanderley-Wanderley! Arriba, and so forth, as the big lanky Cafundelense bugger knocks the Scorpions into the lead at Turkish. After losing the previous derby (albeit making up for it somewhat in the CMS Cup), a victory here would go down a treat even if they aren’t still in the title race by the end of the weekend.

Minute 23 ~ By the by, yes, all these games are going on at the same time. Someone somewhere really had a lot of spare foresight handy…

Minute 32 ~ Second goal for NAPPC in their nice little meaningless fixture against the Indies.

Minute 34 ~ By the by, yes, the Di Bradini Cup is underway… so the likes of Portuguese, Radyukevich and MN Smith in particular are somewhat depleted. Green Island are also missing Jhanna Young, which we’re going to stress as a major blow because we’re going to make her an important future character if it kills us. Still one-nil up, though.

Minute 36 ~ Or, to put it another way; not. Ariel Night, ironically enough, trots past her marker (this really does happen an unseemly amount) and fires in the Dragons’ entirely against-the-run-of-play equaliser.

Minute 41 ~ Former Cafundelense international Rossi pops up at the far post from Ras Rataran’s corner and bobbles a shot under Daniel Lanchini. And that’s Radyukevich very nearly done and dusted. How many more relegations can this grand old club take?

Minute 42 ~ Ho Ho Ho! Meeeeerrrrry Christimas! Roel Kuypers, still the best Nethertopian to have been shamelessly ignored by his international boss, takes advantage of some ragged GIZ defender to put Tenderville two-one up. Fascinating stuff, Watson, as Cas Richardson flashes just wide for Caires City up in Clotaire… Could we be on the verge of a late twist in the title race?

Minute 43 ~ Another random Sargossan scores for NAPPC, by the way.

Minute 45 ~ Oh, my stars and garters! Drunn Deleks collects from Kuypers, can’t find a way past Campbell Raviranjan… but it matters all for naught, as the ball deflects off the former MN Smith full-back and Tenderville are three-one up in Zapata. Crikey.

Minute 51 ~ Josh Belmore for Caires Sports, as another almosty season for the Knights slithers sweetly towards its conclusion. A nice finish though, and they can’t be ruled out of the running for the TQCC places.

Minute 53 ~ Nicole Delara pulls one back for the Indies, but… feh. Alberto Herráez, I think we may have missed, tucked away in stoppage time with the ball rebounded off Raheem Kay, so that’s the Marbles almost home and dry.

Minute 57 ~ Equaliser for Turkish, and it’s another goal for John Yeoman. It’s passed under the radar somewhat, but the twenty-nine year-old squad player really has represented one of the calls of the season. Mannasuch has got a hell of a lot wrong this term, but sticking the Gamboa YTS product in the first XI certainly wasn’t one of his bolder and dafter decisions, and without him Turkish could be in a much worse position right now.

Minute 61 ~ Green Island are pressing still, but they’ve just lost the West Zirconian Peter Waterson to an ankle… something, I dunno, and once George Heybourne has to come on you know they’re seriously down to the bare bones…

Minute 62 ~ GOOOAAAALLL…. AND IT’S ROEL BLOODY KUYPERS AGAIN! Unbeliveable stuff in Zapata, as Tenderville go four-one up. All the GIZ need are for City to pierce Karl John’s net up north, and a truly woeful day is complete.

Minute 64 ~ Orrr… mm… Lúthien Anwamanë, arguably the CMSC’s most marketable asset for some reason, and pretty much nailed-on to be Golden Boot winner, slides one in from a perfectly-timed va Drake pass (is there any other kind?). There’s still a huge way to go if they want to come back from this, though…

Minute 66 ~ Ahem. Michel Mulder, who’s basically only on the team to give the GIZ some much-needed grit, takes it upon himself to storm past Harvey Lewis and Alex Rafaela and make it three-four. Heavens to Betsy…

Minute 75 ~ Three words for you now. Espy. va. Drake. Four-four. Shiiit…

Minute 79 ~ Someone scores for Albrecht FC, I think. Or possibly Turkish. Don’t know, don’t care, because there’s only one place worth watching right now, and that’s… that’s… oh, lordy be.

Minute 80 ~ Cor.

Minute 81 ~ Seriously though, cor. Cor, people.

Minute 82 ~ “She’s from, the fairer sex/ her name features-a-circumflex/ Aintôrthea Durosa! Aintôrthea Durosa!!”

Minute 83 ~ So the song goes, anyway. Five-four to Green Island, seven minutes and bags of injury time left to go, Caires City still can’t find a way past Port of Clotaire, and we’re heading for a furious few minutes…

Minutes 84 through 90+3 ~ Yup. Definitely furious.

Minute 90+20 ~ And there, ladies and gentlemen, we have it. The final whistles see Green Island take an unassailable lead in the title race, a whole lot of insufferable Vanorians start jumping about, and a thoroughly damp Espy va Drake takes to the podium alongside Daft Massimo to address the crowd and… and…

Mister Mazurkiewicz! It happened again!

AFC MN Smith 3-0 Melin & Nader (Postman 17 and 89, Rojas 90+1)
Albrecht Turkish 1-2 Albrecht FC (Yeoman 57; Wanderley 21, Foster 76)
Caires Sports 1-0 Marquez-Onwere (Belmore 51)
Gamboa FC 0-1 El din Marbles (Herráez 45+1)
Green Island 5-4 Tenderville United (Illés 20, Anwamanë 64, Mulder 66, va Drake 75, Durosa 79; Night 36, Kuypers 42 and 62, Raviranjan og 45)
KT Hotspur 2-0 Radyukevich CSC (Rossi 41, Dariegan 87)

NAPPC 3-1 Albrecht Independent FC (Santos 5, Beender 32, González Rodríguez 42; Delara 53)
Port of Clotaire 0-0 Caires City

Matchday Thirty-Three… Hey, lookit that! The Indies won a game, bless ‘em. At Melin & Nader, sending los italianos right back to down to hell with ‘em.

Hey, lookit that! MN Smith drew for the fifteenth time this season. Against Radyukevich, sending the Jukos right back to the depths of the CMSC2.

Which is just plain wrong, frankly. Not just that this club has to suffer than particular indignity, but that a team with three solid Somewhereistonians, including an international full-back, two ever-youthful Sarzonians, a very solid Vanorian in holding midfielder Morgan Banz, and young talent of the likes of Paganel, Ben Palmer and Ben Clayton should be relegated with a game to spare. It’s unseemly.

A fire sale is inevitable, and if anyone more recognisable than the mainstay midfielder Wayne Davis and sub-par ‘keeper Lanchini are in the first team come next season it’ll be a stunner. Having to rebuild all over again, we shouldn’t expect them back in a hurry, which is just so utterly depressing… I want a tissue.

In other news, Turkish lost at home to the triumphant champions but Caires Sports could only take a point in Peregrinus City, meaning that the Knights need to make up nine goals from somewhere if they’re going to beat Mannasuch’s side to the fourth TQCC spot. Otherwise, it’s all done and dusted.

Um.

Well, Turkish got the fourth TQCC place on goal difference. And… and…

Players of the Season

Golden Boot:

1st Lúthien Anwamanë, Green Island, 22 goals
2nd Ham Hyi-san, Port of Clotaire, 19 goals
3rd Roel Kuypers, Tenderville United, 18 goals

Players’ Player of the Season:

1st Espy va Drake, Green Island
2nd Salvador González, Caires City
3rd Jesse Nakatsuru, Albrecht FC

The traditional curtain-closing night of back-slapping and vol-au-vents came to a close with the equally traditional giving-of-one-of-the-major-gongs-to-va-Drake.

To some degree, you could argue that this hasn’t been the Vanorian’s best season in Candelariasian football, but that really doesn’t prove an awful lot, all things considered. He still managed thirteen league goals and lordy knows how many assists, he’s now indisputably the best player this league’s ever had, and he’s the title-winning captain. What’s not to like?

The runners-up for this one are both Candelariasians – possibly from a bit of block voting from the CMSC1’s increasingly scarce natives, feeling that it’s about time the big gong went back their way following the recent Cafundelense stranglehold. They might’ve failed, but it’s a good indication of the value of creative, goalscoring midfielders in this division and, frankly, it just makes a change…

Sportswriters’ Player of the Season:

1st Tuomas Hindenburg, Caires City
2nd Espy va Drake, Green Island
3rd Roel Kuypers, Tenderville United

The first time the nation’s hacks have voted for a defender since before the international era, Hindenburg brings to an end a series of two straight victories for the man… thing now bumped to number two. Like all the best centre-halves, his input was most visible when he was missing, with his brief spell away off lifting the World Cup coinciding with the rapid tumbling of City’s title chances. A true leader of an otherwise pretty ropey defence, this was certainly his finest season of domestic football – and it’s just a pity the ickle Apertura trophy is all he’s got to show for it.

Plus this, obviously.

As for Kuypers, he really has been consistently brilliant for Tenderville over the past two terms, and we certainly appreciate him even if his homeland doesn’t…

Young Player of the Season:

1st Jhanna Young, Green Island
2nd Koviljko Randjelovic, Arrigo Portuguese
3rd Daniel González Rodríguez, NAPPC

Not a huge number of options for this one, so no-one should get overexcited about Young becoming the first female player to even come close to winning this award, particularly given that Green Island could afford to carry her somewhat during her inevitable dips in form here and there. Still, she made an undoubtedly valuable contribution, something that Randjelovic can claim too in providing any number of lovely crosses and through-balls alike for Portuguese’s three-pronged attack.

Completing a line-up of players from outside C&M (*sigh*) is the young Sargossan González Rodríguez, who arguably made the most important impact of all – thirteen league goals with almost no support whatsoever kept NAPPC comfortably free from danger in their first CMSC1 season, and they’ll face a considerable battle to hang onto the striker, one would have thought. Hopefully.

Manager of the Season:

1st Daft Massimo, Green Island
2nd Dionísio Madeira Lobos, Caires City
3rd Zachary Telemans, Mayo Valley

With Massimo not winning last term’s managerial award (that went to Brian Carson, who’s yesterday’s news now, apparently), he was plainly a shoe-in this time. Dionísio’s selection ahead of Torrealba is interesting, given that the Albrecht FC boss had rather more pressure on his shoulders and metaphorically enormous shoes to fill, but City’s awesome Apertura form shouldn’t be forgotten and the Cafundelariasian’s first season in full-time coaching has been a distinctly impressive one. As for Telemans, you can’t argue with eleventh – in NorthWalker, Szatmári and, most importantly, the Toyur trio; the former Turkish midfielder simply got all his big calls spot on and an untraditionally lengthy stay in the top-flight may yet be on the cards for the Sky Blues.

Foreigner of the Season:

1st Lúthien Anwamanë, Green Island
2nd William, Albrecht FC
3rd Tuomas Hindenburg, Caires City

Yeah, why not. The utterly redundant Foreigner award generally gets given to someone who’s consistently shown themselves as a true pro on and off the field of play, and Anwamanë is certainly a hugely important marketing tool for the league as a whole. As well as being a fine striker. Obviously.

Keeper of the Season:

1st William Romero Fernández, Arrigo Portuguese
2nd Harry Rosalia, Albrecht FC
3rd Raheem Kay, Gamboa FC

Portuguese’s defence ain’t the best, so to claim a better record at the back than KT Hotspur – and, indeed, Green Island – they must’ve been doing something right. That something was Romero, who as a goalkeeper isn’t everybody’s cup of tea by any means but fits the template of borderline bonkers number ones perfectly, and just edged out eternal KotS winner Rosalia for this one.

Three Candelariasians, as well. Neat, that.

Defender of the Season:

1st Tuomas Hindenburg, Caires City
2nd William, Albrecht FC
3rd Santiago Fuentes, Port of Clotaire

Obvious, obvious… eh!?

This is the bit where I should be explaining just what Fuentes did from full-back to earn this bronze, but for the love of all things holy I cannot. I suspect bribery, or else drink has been consumed in hearty quantities by this point in the evening.

Midfielder of the Season:

1st Harry Oughton, Arrigo Portuguese
2nd John Yeoman, Albrecht Turkish
3rd Jesse Nakatsuru, Albrecht FC

Can’t argue with that. Oughton’s late injury spell cost him a role in Kura-Pelland’s run to the World Cup semi-finals, and any hope of Portuguese making the top five, but when he did get on the ball he was just an absolute star. Obnoxiously showy, granted, but still a sight to behold.

Ultimately though, any player of half a dozen or more could’ve taken this one – Kuypers, Oliveira Tavares, Durosa, Robin Smith, Justin Tillström even… but it’s great to see Yeoman up there, a proper revelation at his relatively late age following many months squatting idly on the Turkish bench. It is possible to bounce back from such a fate, and he’s an example to us all. He should probably give motivational talks and stuff. Maybe a tour of primary schools. He’s also called John, which is really cool and exotic these days.

Forward of the Season:

1st Lúthien Anwamanë, Green Island
2nd Ricky, El din Marbles
3rd John Belmore, Caires Sports

Oh, I don’t have to keeping thinking of things to say, do I?

Cheers.

Woman of the Season:

1st Lúthien Anwamanë, Green Island
2nd Ilga NorthWalker, Mayo Valley
3rd Jhanna Young, Green Island

My God, this award is still so utterly pointless. It was pointless last year, and it’s pointless this year, and it’ll be pointless next year unless the boneheads responsible for it wake up and smell the twenty-first century. Or at least realise that Aintôrthea Durosa is a woman, how many times, people!?

I suppose we should be thankful they didn’t do an institute those two other awards we were joshin’ about at the end of last season, eh?

Homosexual of the Season:

1st George Morrison, Albrecht FC
2nd Ahershk Valinial, Caires Sports
3rd Marcelo Augusto Conceição Silva, Melin & Nader

Oh, good grief.

Candelariasian of the Season:

1st Jesse Nakatsuru, Albrecht FC
2nd Salvador González, Caires City
3rd John Yeoman, Albrecht Turkish

Referee of the Season:

1st Andrés Toluca, Arrigo
2nd Ted Garrido, Nr Onwere
3rd Benjamin Wasselueb, Gr Albrecht

Um…?

CMS Cup Final…

I suppose… I suppose I could recount the final in exhaustive detail. But… well. Y’know. It’s too depressing, to be honest. Just take it, you foreign currs. We’ll have it back in twenty-four months, you see if we don’t.

T’was as you were in the top four, barring a modicum of switcherooing in positions, with CandelariaAM’s smaller squad and longer SBCC run than Catedral costing them first place and, very nearly, automatic promotion. The Shining Sons are certainly going to need major reinforcements on this evidence, while Catedral’s youthful side really hit the ground running come the Clausura and lost just once en route to the first promotion since XXVI, and at the first time of asking.

And joy of joys, its McDonald SC who make a return. How… truly underwhelming.

In one sense, it’s good to see some of these small town clubs mixing it with the big guns (granted, McDonald are based in the largest city in north-west Candelaria, but… shurrup). Back at the start of the international era, the likes of Abiodun North, Candelaria Arsenal (from Lavange) and Castillo FC were competitive forces amongst the giants from the capital and the north-east, but the shifting sands of financial time have left them all CMSC2 mainstays. The Flying Fish from Saurin pleasingly buck the trend – and, notably, this is the fifth time they’ve finished third in the last ten seasons, and the first they’ve managed to translate that into a play-off victory.

Pity they’re so utterly dull, though. And it goes rather without saying that the Oakley Park Self-Catering Holidays Arena will be the top-flight’s smallest ground next term.

What we could have had instead were Riverton Olympic, very much the little club that could. No-one anticipated they could keep their place in the top four during the Clausura, but young manager Fran Russell is clearly one of Candelariasian football’s hottest managerial properties right now and the Zapata side came so desperately close to the miracle. As it is, the team is likely to be raided by wealthier CMSC2 or even CMSC1 sides, and Russell himself could well be on his way to the next top-flight side with a managerial opening.

As for Ironside, their failure to make the leap is also disappointing for ‘em – given that a rather loaded Pocoan gentlemen by the name of Deacon Farley bought the club several weeks ago. The Irons are perhaps one of the less likely outfits to join the multitude of Candelariasian clubs under foreign ownership, but will now at least be comfortable favourites to join Radyukevich in gaining promotion next term.

And as for Caires FC? This is about as low as it’s going to get for Caires Sports’ one-time major rivals. No cash, no kids, and the future looks truly dire for the CMSC1 XIII runners-up.

With ten games to spare, Webley sat in sixth – twelve points off the lead of Dublynne, a tiny western Candelarian side best known for originally producing Albrecht FC’s Edwards brothers (i.e., not known at all, by anyone, to the extent that it serves as a valuable reminder of why doing updates for the lower divisions is so utterly pointless), who appeared to be cruising to their first stay in the second tier. Clearly, it didn’t happen – instead, their local (ish) rivals, a club named after their own stadium, stormed to victory with a remarkable string of results.

A proper feather in the cap of manager Archie Dubicki, but not so his former CandelariaAM team-mate Vincent Murch, who led Abiodun South – now indisputably their town’s third club – to their lowliest status for many a decade.

Over on the other side of the trickle, Castellano Hills’ promotion sees one Arrigo side leapfrog another. The Hills are an altogether more exciting outfit, a proper community club who’ve worked their way up from the doldrums and really do deserve this – and best of all, they went up ahead of MarquezOW’s reserve team, with a squad of almost entirely home-grown players and absolutely no help from Portuguese.

Still playing in Thompsontown, rather amusingly, with the Millerman Sheppard Stadium still housing Albrecht FC; the shiny new Scorplings failed to turn the presence of Sam Doswell, Rhys Khan, Adam Kouakou Kouamé and Jaime Zamora, et all, into promotion – with everyone’s favourite bunch of grumpy suburban Bovites going up in their stead. Ironside’s year just got better meanwhile, with the Warbirds relegated. Sinjun City Alliance earned their place in the semi-pro divisions – meaning that there’s now another Albrecht club amongst the eighty-six CMSC sides…

Er, yes. Always run out of juice by this point. Erm… Well, they’re from the outskirts of El din. And Marquez Athletic, at t’other end, go straight back down to be replaced by the Pranschke Island Athletics. Again. Too many Athletics, I feel. ‘Bout time we had a Thistle, don’t you think?

International Update… Close but no cigar, ultimately – City and Green Island both out in the TQCC knock-out stages on away goals but clearly remaining amongst the most competitive clubs out there right now, with the Errant Knights still sitting pretty atop the rankings. Yay for them.

In the event, the final was all South Candelaria versus North Candelaria – or, more technically, South Candelaria and Fans of Turks’ Club versus North Candelaria and Fans of Albrecht FC, as Turkish product William Vaughan and full international Harvey Vavasour from up Rosasharn way clashed in Torgos.

Can we say “congrats to the Rockers” now? Yeah, gowon then.

The Noka Mariners proved the major thorn in Albrecht FC’s side one more, meanwhile, but a healthy long Globe Cup run (or two of ‘em, in fact) is probably just what Torrealba needs to get the Scorpions’ TQCC bid back on track – with Le Lan’s side taking that route themselves, not so many moons ago.

Of course, all that came after one of the ties of the Globe Cup so far (at least from a Candelariasian perspective, anyway), with the Scorpions and Turkish clashing in the Last Sixteen. Both teams must be thoroughly sick of the sight of each other, but the Millermen can reserve particular loathing for their arch-rivals – their inner-city foes putting them out of two cup competitions this term, coming back from behind at home in the second leg to score twice through Nakatsuru either side of half-time. George Morrison’s chipped winner in the ninetieth minute will live long in the memory, even if it all ultimately came to naught at the hands of the Mariners.

Another season departs and our highly paid (well maybe not to Palmouthian standards, but they do ok) professionals are taking advantage of that tiny break between campaigns for some well deserved R&R. Well, apart from the Di Bradini Cup squad of course. And all those locked in contract or transfer negotiations. But the rest are possibly somewhere nice. But when they’re away we do pine for them so So here’s a quick run down of who we think the challengers will be next season. A no prizes for guessing they look spookily similar to last season.

Last season’s league win was a lot closer than Sporting San Marquez manager José Felipe Cassumba Domingos would have liked but with the Gil billions at his disposal the southern giants will no doubt start as narrow favourites. International midfielder Júlian Reyes has left for pastures new, Serrano in Cafundéu to be exact, but Under-21 national team starlet Diego Lara should slot into the hole, literally and figuratively, quite nicely. The canny coach could now have the most feared attack in the nation with new signings Agapito López Santos (from relegated Alianza Jucaro) and Marcinho (Cafundó do Juta) joining Lara in a potent three man attacking midfield behind lone striker Roberto Ordóñez. And with former striker Ferran Higuera joining the coaching staff SuperLiga defences should really start to worry. If only they could find that winning ingredient in the TakilQuip Champions Cup.

Strangely the Ciudad Soluca fans are being sensibly patient with their Candelariasian coach Hane Davis. Yes, the record league winners dropped out of the TakilQuip Champions Cup places for the second successive season, and finished behind city rivals Deportivo to boot. But the capital club’s faithful recognise they’ve got a class act in the dugout who steered them to their best Globe Cup finish and captured the big name signing of C&M world cup winning striker Zachary Adekunde. His partnership with Farías blossomed nicely in the second half of the season but hopes of more of the same were dashed with Farías’ transfer to Internacional de Penderia in Cafundéu. Where he’ll be up against Sargossa’s number one Martin Tejera who also made the move to Cafundéu, with Cruzeiro do Sul. That's right, the Cafundéu scouts have finally noticed our players. We've made it! Top of the world Ma! Ciudad’s scouts trawled the Cafundelense leagues for replacements and in have come the reliable Júlio (Central United) between the sticks and striker Zedervan (Santa Cruz do Norte) who arrives with an excellent scoring record in the Second Division and could prove an intriguing buy. With Davies now having a season of acclimatisation under his belt, and some interesting new buys on show, this could be year Ciudad claw themselves back on top.

Gozan side El Nacional started like a train but found the second half of the season a bit of a struggle as Nethertopian coach Otto van Belhamel found the boots of his compatriot Rob Kietecs slightly tricky to fill. On the pitch the Nethertopian influence was a positive one with Maximilliano Barone, Marcellus Valkenberg and Caerus Lamarti all excelling at the back. But it was in attack where the Corminite giants looked a little toothless (54 goals? Pah!). A rumoured cross city raid on S.C. Goza for striker Francisco Fontoza could help. Talented Poconese playmaker Gandalfo is also been looked at after he left relegated Alianza. If they can snap them up and maybe be one or two more reinforcements in key areas El Nacional should be back sticking it to the Soluca duo.

The plush new surroundings of the ediraf Arena clearly suited Deportivo Soluca, who finished above their bigger city rivals for the first time in fifteen years. The cool finishing of Joaquín Bautista will once again be key as talented coach Gabriel Vizcarra has been reluctant to dive straight into the transfer market. Surprisnly so as Deportivo are regularly one of the nation’s biggest spenders in the close season. Keeping hold of Sargossan international midfielder Marcelo Cobían would be the first major bit of business. But if they want to challenge again a fresh player here and there would be essential.

Dínamo Maturín would look to be the best placed of the rest to capitalise should any of last season’s top four, and Deportivo we’re looking at you, slip up. The side from Sargossa’s third largest city are a model of good management and their Ciudad Deportiva boasts some of the best facilities in the entire archipelago. Coach José Marín’s wonderfully cavalier attitude and his now familiar favoured ‘trident’ formation has won the Quellan side many fans amongst the neutrals. Martín de León and Gaston Batista provide the main goal threats while Rubén Sosa and Fernando Garrido are forming a formidable partnership in central defence. And if Marín can coax the best out of freebie Clint Markota the Newmanistani could be one of the bargains of the season. Their performance in the Prince’s Shield in Queer Poco el Mono Ara prove Dínamo are one to watch.

Of the rest, Porto Alegro Azul boast one of the league’s most promising young coaches in Agustín Durán but lack a squad to match while Estrella Torreón need to transfer their formidable home form, with Poconese international keeper Petr Ollic and local wide man Mario Marín particularly impressive, to the occasional away fixture. Deportivo Cordova perennially collapse when on the verge of success and after a good couple of years S.C. Goza appear to be heading entirely in the wrong direction. Much like former champions, about a thousand years ago but still, Petro Mercada who at this stage would just settle for top half. Little Mercadel S.C. continue to inspire but with the FSS considering making the role of the nation’s Under-21 coach a full-time position they could lose inspirational manager Juan Manuel Del Rios, the current occupier of both seats. Although the ability of the FSS to make any kind of decision is in doubt due to Federation President Rafael Barragán still apparently locked in discussions with other Rushmori football chiefs in Torgos, capital of Pasarga. Should that go on for much longer Rafa could potentially be declared legally dead.

There are a few other teams too but it’s late and no one’s going to read this far down anyway. Admit it. And to think we were going to tell you all about day five of the Sargossan Olympic trials too. For shame.

The Pre-season Preview.. Una Serie III is almost here

Team – Almondvale
‘Vale fell apart in the second half of last season and slid to a stop in fifth place. Their distinct lack of funds makes bringing in new blood difficult, but they have added Taeshan striker Ulli White to their strike force. Add this to the emergence of the young Adrian Belmont and Almondvale may have a decent strike partnership. ‘Vale have also cut loose captain and former Queer Poco international captain Ugo Stowell, who at 34 has lost his edge.
Don’t expect them to break into the top 4 this season but don’t expect them to slide into the second half of the table.
Stadium – Almondvale Stadium (25,000)
Manager – Fletcher Goodwin, the young manager will continue to grind out results with his side but may feel a little aggrieved that he still has no money to play with.
Star Man – Seb Guardiola (right midfield)
Expectations – top 6.

Team – Athletic Khaldoon
Another mid-table scrap beckons as Athletic attract just one new faces, Arroza youngster Riley Van Proovinjan. A number of the bigger name players are beginning to look unsettled as Khaldoon fail to live up to the fans expectations, if they don’t make the top six this season an exodus of players may be on the cards. It is therefore down to manager Alan Fenwick to get the best out of his players and unlock their hidden potential.
Stadium – Khaldoon Central Stadium (40,000)
Manager – Alan Fenwick has a lot of good players at his disposal but doesn’t seem capable of leading them beyond mid-table.
Star Man – Brad Johnson (goalkeeper)
Expectations – mid table 7-8

Team – Augustus
Stunned everyone by reaching and winning the final of the Trofeo Royal. Finished 4th, utilizing a mix of young enthusiasm and the experience of battle hardened players. No changes in personnel but the departure of Mustapha Rehman. Manager Gianfranco Vianna will be hoping his young stars Hugo Anderson and Wayne Ullrich come of age and guide the team to another International club championship.
Stadium – Nestle Road (24,000)
Manager – Gianfranco Vianna – may be a man with a plan, relying on young players from the academy or just misguided. He should invest a little cash and bring in a new forward.
Star Man – Hugo Anderson (midfield)
Expectations – top 4-5

Team – Jonastown United
Scrapped survival on the last day of the season and will be looking to establish themselves as an Una Serie team this year. Have added Logan Jordan from Taeshan to their midfield but may still be lacking one or two star players. If their foreign strikers can find their groove they may avoid relegation at the expense of Salaga or Valengren.
Stadium – Caiman Stadium (26,00)
Star Man – Carlos Borges (striker)
Manager – Ricky Ortega, has to make do build a team on a shoestring. Will be looking to add a couple of players before the start of the season, perhaps just on loan.
Expectations – bottom 3.

Team – Port Los Renato
PLR seem to have established themselves as a mid-table team and don’t look like being budged. It’s unlikely Alex Rowley can lead them above 9th, but he has enough quality available to him to avoid relegation at a canter. Star man Lionel Vega will be looking to build on last years superb performance and call up to the Queer Poco international squad. Expect to see more of young Starblaydi defender Onome Agu who has also been included in Starblaydia’s national team.
Stadium – Jiminez Alberto Xavi Stadium (17,000)
Star Man – Onome Agu (defender)
Manager – Alex Rowley, the manager has the backing of the fans and the chairman, he just needs a little cash injection to steer the Anchormen closer to the top half of the table.
Expectations – mid table 7-9

Team – Pythons
The champions roared to their second league title in two years. Lost international central defender Karim Zaki to Royal Khaldoon, but have replaced him with a new defender, hailing from Taeshan, Miguel Æto will be thrown straight into the starting XI. They have also nabbed Di Bradini cup striker Enrico Dossena for free. In all, Pythons have an exceptionally strong squad and look set to retain their title.
Stadium – St. Jonas Stadium (22,000)
Star Man – Ishmael Van Dyke (striker)
Manager – Mark Sloan, astute transfers have left his team looking in better shape than last season.
Expectations – league champions. 1st

Team – Real Minanda
Minanda’s second half performance saved their bacon and may be the catalyst which sees them propelled up the league to mid-table. They have a few good players but need to add to their strike force and find a regular goal scorer. Have brought in a new goalkeeper to hopefully plug their leaky defence.
Stadium – El Estadio de la Esperanze (58,000)
Manager – Hector Gonzales, another manager who needs a cash boost to thrust his team forward.
Star Man – Richard Ramirez (midfield)
Expectations – mid-table 7-9

Team – Ridgemont Town
Ridgemont finished 3rd again having slipped up on the final day. They have not picked up any new players so must be confident they can break into the top two based on last year’s performance. However they may be relying on Candelaria’s Tom Smith too much and may need some extra fire power upfront beside him to push forward in the league.
Stadium – St. Valerie’s Stadium (30,000)
Star Man – Frank Le Tissier (midfield)
Manager – Guus Wilhelmson, hopes of breaking into the top two may be speculative considering he has no new faces in the team.
Expectations – top 4 (may get passed by Royal)

Team – Royal Khaldoon
Royal’s summer spending didn’t reach the level expected, bringing in only 4 new players. However new manager Tarmo Mae believes these additions are enough for Royal to challenge Pythons for the title. Defensively Royal are solid, however their attacking line looks a little flimsy, new boy Juan Segura will score goals, but Rustu and Thompson are not champion standard forwards.
Stadium – Royal Stadium (27,000)
Star Man – Tomasz Poborsky (defender)
Manager – Tarmo Mae – won the league in his native Somewheristonia but whether he is able to do so with the players available at Royal will be interesting to watch.
Expectations – top 4 (will find money can’t buy you titles)

Team – Salaga F.C.
The league new boys will struggle. Looking towards foot of the table they will need to beat the few teams dotted around them, Jonastown, Valengren, PLR and maybe rely on scrappy performances elsewhere. Picked up Ugo Stowell and Gio Van Dyke for nothing and spent a club record $3,000,000 on League I top scorer Benito Gabrini from Athletico Palampas. May survive, just.
Stadium – Estadio Ruiz (21,000)
Manger – Khalid Farooz, Youngest manager in the league will want to repeat the feats of Jonastown and stay up in their debut season.
Star Man – Giovanni Van Dyke (midfield)
Expectations – botton 3

Team – Skyte City
Runners up, again, have strengthened their midfield and look a safe bet to come second again. They are still missing a big centre half and will be looking to add one before the season gets under way. Last year finished well behind Pythons and just pipped Ridgemont to second, with their new acquisitions they should keep pace with Pythons, at least until the final ¼ of the season.
Stadium – Grayside Stadium (20,000)
Manager – Daryl Ferguson, a great manager who just needs a touch of luck when it counts.
Star Man – Alberto Xisco (striker)
Expectations – top 2

Team – Valengren Kickers
Valengren imploded last year and with an identical squad don’t look up to the challenge of escaping the bottom three. If heads are still hung low after last year they’ll start slowly and if they can’t get off to a flier they may be favourites to go down.
Stadium – Union Sports Stadium (20,000)
Manger – Ray Hodgson – odds on favorite to be the first manager sacked, doesn’t bode well for the Valengren coach.
Star Man – Nazim Benayoun (midfield)
Expectations – bottom 3.

Likely First XI: D Kelly; C Nelson, P Roberts, M Crossley, L Barrett; C Forster, T Griffiths, R Corrin, J Greene; I Betts, S Miller
