Washington Public Lands Commissioner Hilary Franz announces run for governor

“Washington is facing urgent issues – from a rapidly changing climate, to a housing crisis across the entire state, and soaring income inequality pushing families out of the middle class,” Franz, a Democrat, said in a statement. “I’m running for Governor to make bold progress and solve these issues, and to do so quickly.”

Doubt. The State Dems have had a trifecta for years now, these issues aren't being solved because they don't care to solve them. It's much easier to focus on culture war stuff to keep the proles in line and voting for you instead of actually having to deliver substantial and effective policy changes.

Why CNN should not be giving free airtime to Trump..

I’ll tell you why this is different. Those lies persuaded thousands of his supporters to storm the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, violently attacking uniformed police officers and terrorizing members of Congress and their staff. I witnessed this assault firsthand as an officer with the Metropolitan Police Department, who like hundreds of MPD officers, responded to the U.S. Capitol Police Department’s calls for assistance after their officers were overrun by Trump’s mob. As a result of my efforts that day I was severely beaten, struck numerous times with a taser, and suffered a heart attack as well as a traumatic brain injury. One police officer died, and several others took their own lives in the wake of that barbaric day.

It is not just that Trump’s lies and political rhetoric sparked an uprising at our nation’s Capitol. Trump, as U.S. president, lied in an effort to defraud the American people and overturn a free and fair election in an attempt to remain in power. (See the January 6th Select Committee’s Report.) In doing so he betrayed every aspect of his oath to represent us as Americans. We no longer need to imagine what Trump is capable of. He has shown us that he is an authoritarian who will use any means at his disposal, including violence, to remain in power.

Putting him onstage, having him answer questions like a normal candidate who didn’t get people killed in the process of trying to end the democracy he’s attempting to once again run, normalizes what Trump did. It sends a message that attempting a coup is just part of the process; that accepting election results is a choice; and that there are no consequences, in the media or in politics or anywhere else, for rejecting them.

Ah, but you see: Trump means ratings, ratings mean money, and money is the one true god of the United States of America.
There are three things vital to know about any powerful institution: in whose interests it exercises its power, to whom it is accountable, and how to be rid of it.

So, who is going to blink first in this budget fight? My guess is Joe Biden, he is going to relent, and allow for spending cuts that fucks over poor people, but not as much as the current Republican bill does.

He doesn't have to, I hope he doesn't, the consequences of defaulting are too large and too easy to pin on a party that pretty much everyone is coming to hate. People buy Trump, not the Republicans.

While they currently have a 43% favourable rating, for the most part of the year they've been hovering around the mid-30s.

I'd argue even in that, for the most part it's not for Republicans, it's against the alternative.

This is not a hill the Republicans should stand on, but alas their other hills are so damn atrocious it's the only one they've got.

Not bending over backwards to all the corporations and actually trying to improve the state would be a nice start. That, of course, won't happen and we'll probably just continue the slow decline we've been on for a good few years now but it's nice to dream.

Yeah, legitimizing Trump is just a terrible idea. I get that CNN wants to appeal to more moderate and conservative voters, but is this really the way? Well, they might not have a choice given what the GOP has devolved in to.

Trump's Team called it a victory, but god damn, CNN really dropped the ball: the crowd was a majority of GOP Voters with a sprinkle of Independents mixed in. It's as if they didn't even try to have undecided voters in the crowd (there weren't that many). A summary of that included:

1. Him refusing to state whether he would sign a national abortion ban. It's clear he sees it as an issue that can kill his campaign.

2. Refused to say whether he wanted Ukraine or Russia to win.

3. Said Republicans should let a default go through unless Democrats agreed to spending cuts.

4. Would pardon most, if not all, of those that particpated in the Jan 6th Attacks, saying it was a "beautiful day".

5. Called E. Jean Carroll, the woman that accused of sexual abuse and rape, a whack job (the crowd cheered and laughed with that).

6. And his signature: he refused to commit to accepting the 2024 Election Results unless it's an "honest election", aka, only if I win.

But there's more:

He made contradicting claims about his January 2021 call with Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, in which Trump pressured Raffensperger to overturn the state’s 2020 election results — a call that’s being investigated by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.

Trump falsely claimed, “I didn’t ask (Raffensberger) to find anything,” before later conceding: “I said, ‘You owe me votes because the election was rigged.’”

Basically, CNN gave him 70 minutes of him speaking his mind, which was met with cheers and clearly shows where the GOP's (and some independents) mindset is though I'm sure he provided Democrats with a lot of snippets. That said, Trump is a dangerous person who has a real chance of returning to the White House, especially if Americans don't care about his criminality (which he kind of admitted out in the open).

My conspiracy theory is that CNN wants Trump to win the nomination because he will be easier to win against, versus Desantis.

1) CNN knows how much power they have. They practically made Trump win in 2016 through their constant coverage of him.

2) As I said, Trump will be easier to win against in 2024

3) CNN allows pro-Trump ads on their cable channel

4) Desantis appeals much more to conservatives who are still on the fence or who simply don't like Trump, thus creating a much more united voter base for the GOP.

5) Why do you think everybody suddenly cares about the (completely false) banned books narrative, gender policies, and every other thing Desantis has done in Florida? They are targeting Desantis.

6) Trump is an idiot and they know that just letting him speak his mind will cause controversy.

Apart from that I don't have much evidence, and even for me, it's pretty crazy. It is believable though.

Doubt. The State Dems have had a trifecta for years now, these issues aren't being solved because they don't care to solve them. It's much easier to focus on culture war stuff to keep the proles in line and voting for you instead of actually having to deliver substantial and effective policy changes.

Yes they like seeing a housing crisis and income inequality. Are you serious? What are your solutions to these things since you clearly have all answers?

If dems cared about those issues the would be addressing them.

Wouldn't put it past them tbh.

Is there any other kind of medical care that has access limited on the basis of age alone? Like, do American doctors refuse to perform appendectomies on anyone under the age of 18?

Except in cases of immediate emmenint harm, they require parental consent to do so. I would have no problem with the same being the case here.
