You have all the personal freedom when you're the last person on earth, but you have no-one to help when you need it. On the other hand, if you're not allowed to do things because theyre unsafe you have basically no learning opportunities.

So as usual, theres a golden middle(or gray area) where we're protected from the worst excesses of both. I find myself sticking to this gray area, though I do stretch or shrink it from time to time and depending on the moral justifications of an issue, I might move within the gray area or move it entirely.

True safety comes from a free and accountable government that is responsive to the democratic will, so freedom is certainly more important. No one is safe under a tyrannical dictatorship or police state, and despots throughout history have proven that they do not care for the wellbeing or safety of their citizens if they happen to be opponents of their arbitrary regime. It has been stated many times, but as Benjamin Franklin said, those who would sacrifice their freedom in the name of security deserve neither, and this is one of the few things I agree with him on.
