Compulsory Consumerist State

He wouldn’t have been able to even guess as to how many times he’d taken a seat in this room. But it still never failed to stir something within him. President Gregorio Emparán settled himself into the high-backed chair at the head of the long, dark table in the centre of the room. He regarded the other seats, spread along the table’s length. They were all empty. He’d once sat in one of those, when another president had been seated at the head of the table, but now he had the big chair. Monitors ran along both walls, including one huge one that dominated the wall to his left. Maps of various parts of Rushmore and assorted numerical and technical data were displayed on the screens. Data received via official diplomatic sources or through either state or military intelligence channels.

The Command Bunker complex, below the Presidential Palace in Soluca, was arguably one of the most secure sites on the whole continent. It was the centrepiece of Sargossa’s military and security apparatus. Protected by layer upon layer of security and an entire regiment of elite troops. It also provided a handy sanctuary whenever the president fancied a break from the pressing matters of state. Emparán had earmarked just such a break for that very afternoon. He’d faked a security situation in Darmen as a reason to excuse himself from a seemingly never-ending budgetary briefing about the future of guava imports. He wasn’t entirely sure he’d ever even tasted a guava. He was definitely sure they didn’t warrant a two hour meeting, with PowerPoint presentations.

Having successfully escaped, he made his way through the warren of the interior of the government wing of the palace before descending the flights of steps down into the depths. Where he now sat, surrounded by the region of Rushmore in data form. But that wasn’t the room’s only use. He pushed a button on the desk in front of him.

‘Captain, you can put it on the main screen.’

In a side room, a uniformed officer hit the appropriate buttons that connected a particular channel onto the screen. It burst into life, displaying an image of the city of Inhalo in Nyowani Kitara. It wasn’t unusual for Inhalo to appear on these screens, given its significance during Malik Akongo's rebellion against the former communist government. But this particular location hadn’t existed then. The Inhalo City Arena had sprung up since and had been hosting Copa Rushmori football. Crucially, today it was hosting a group fixture that oozed with historical resonance. For the first time in a long old while, Sargossa were taking on the Polar Islandstates. Emparán lent back in his chair and took it all in.

The Polarians may be lacking the stardust of the generations that had come before but these ‘True Valhallans’ still had that tenacity. That fucking tenacity. Three large centrebacks were arrayed in front of their goal, and ahead of them another line of four did little more than protect their half. Sargossan attacks were flung forward but broke against the Tern’s defence like waves crashing against the craggy rocks of their bleak, northern homeland. The first half came and, in frustrating style, went. There were slightly more Sargossan fans watching the Corsairs than in the previous group fixtures. The pairing with the Polarians had aroused the interest of those of a certain age. And they were watching their side struggle to break them down. Not for the first time.

As the second half went on Slavko Jelic withdrew Joaquín Sanz, content to let two centrebacks handle the threat of the Terns’ lone frontman. Fernando Moruga was introduced, as was Jorge Fernández and Gustavo Alcocer. At times the formation resembled a 2-1-4-1-2, with the wingbacks pushing ever forward in an attempt to find a way around the dogged Polarian defence. But a breakthrough was coming. Moruga started it, spearing a long pass to the marauding Iván Alegre down the left flank. Alegre exchanged passes with Enrique González before outpacing the covering Johannes Braun and cutting a ball back into the penalty area. Fernández had stolen a march on Ragnar Holst and arrived late to meet the delivery with the inside of his right boot. It was a sweet strike, one that Hans Aigner could only watch as it clattered off his post and bounced back into the mix. Cue an almighty scramble which ended with Alcocer driving the ball into the net, with a slight deflection off the outstretched leg of Onni Boes.

It was a goal to cause much delight, not least because it was a first win over the Polarians in ruddy ages. It also assured Sargossa’s passage into the knockout stages as group winners and saw the returning Terns miss out entirely. They were in good company, with luminaries of the likes of Pasarga, Tikariot and Pridnestrovia also falling at the first hurdle.

‘Thank you captain, that will be all.’

The screen went black. Emparán allowed himself a brief smile, but it soon vanished. Replaced by something else entirely. A feeling that left him, unsettled. The Polar Islandstates had returned to the world stage. The cuddly, leftist democratic caterpillar had emerged from its chrysalis as a tyrannical, jack-booted butterfly. The first public demonstration of True Valhallan supremacy may have been a damp squib but Emparán was certain it wouldn’t be the last. The new face of Polarian power may have come as a shock to wider Rushmore, but not to the Sargossan leadership. Time doesn’t heal all wounds and Sargossa had never stopped keeping a close eye on its neighbour to the distant north. The two nations shared a land border after all. One neither was particularly content with. Emparán knew all about the rise of The Party. But what he didn’t know is what really bothered him. Now they had shaken off all the checks and balances that came with a democratic system, Gregorio Emparán wondered what this new Polarian regime were truly capable of.

________CABO AZURE________

Sixth Copa Rushmori, debuted in CR38
Best Finish: Third in CR41

A loss to Valladares is the only blemish for Las Maçaricas in this Copa thus far. They outlasted a tricky Gnejs side in the Round of 16, and now find themselves face to face with the gatecrashing Dragoons of Oberour Ar Moro. The Azureans have been accused of lacking focus in this tournament, though their ability to snap to attention when the time calls for it is second to none.

Excitingly, this match creates an opportunity see an Oberour Ar Moro based player for a foreign team. Regium Immortal's Marcelinho Costa is a backup on the Cabo Azure side behind Amilcar Branco, who is considered one of the best Azurean players of today.

What are they hoping for: The semifinals are within grasp and they absolutely believe they can and should get there.

A History of License Plates in the Dominion: Part Six

Image

After the turn of the 17th century, Dis-Livres Corporation of Deports introduced a reflective coating that adhered to metal. One of Dis-Livres' first customers was the Ministry for Transportation, which instantly recognized the potential applications. Shortly thereafter, completely new license plates were introduced in the Dominion. Gone were the embossed metal seen for the last sixty years. Introduced were aluminum plates with a reflectorized surface. Further, this surface allowed for the direct printing of graphics.

The plates issued in 1715 were a pearlescent white with a red design on the top. To recognize the 250th anniversary of the birth of Jean de la Charite, the founder of the Oberour Ar Moro military order, the plates featured "Oberour Ar Moro" in de la Charite's handwriting.

A growing concern was with the ABC 1234 serial number format. This format does allow for 17,576,000 unique variations, but even the Dominion was coming ever closer to reaching this amount. Discussion began on when to change, or at least update, to a ABCD 123 format. That would create over 45 million different variations, reaching well beyond the total population of the Dominion.

The new surfaces also allowed for the application of stickers to note the proper registration of the plate. From here on a plate must show the month and year of its validity. Each variety of sticker had its own unique color combination, so those in the know could tell in glance if the care was legally registered. The year stickers featured a variety of information, mostly for Motor Vehicle Committee use. The three letters to the left showed the trigram for the issuing office, and a serial number and barcode that was for Gendarmerie use.

Selection of articles from Græntfjaller news media.
Finnvarðsdóttir shreds plucky Mytanars to set up enthralling Dagan clash

Kæja Finnvarðsdóttir scored two goals and provided two assists in the first half of the Copa Rushmori Round of 16 game against Mytanija at Port Viljan, as Græntfjall recorded their second successive 5–2 win in a tournament in which they have now scored 27 goals in six games. The shell-shocked Mytanars went to the half 4–0 down as the electric Finnvarðsdóttir ran them ragged, though the southern Rushmori side rallied in the second half, firing back through Drazen Skara and Damien Gannot. Mytanija-based substitute Amandara Navinsdóttir Thakur added a crisp volley to decisively finish things off. Röskvi Tyrfingsson once again wore the captain’s armband, with regular skipper Sara K training with the team but not being declared fit to play, and scored a brace more goals in what is turning into a fabulous tournament for the striker, with 7 goals in 5 games. He has scored in every match Græntfjall have played – and pleasingly, after a succession of headers, this time scored one goal apiece with each foot, twice slotting home straightforwardly from close range having been played through by the talismanic Finnvarðsdóttir. The enigmatic midfielder has weather criticism off the field through the tournament for her perceived mercenary status, but at Port Viljan was in liquid form, continually slipping her markers and sending threatening ball after threatening ball through an increasingly ragged Mytanar defense. Her own two goals were both well taken strikes, the first curled in off the post from just outside the box having steadied herself with time to shoot, and the second a stunning volley from a well worked Hermione Hui free-kick.

Despite the team’s surging offensive form, the 8 goals conceded in 5 games will be less pleasing for manager Thor as he readies to face the dangerous Cassadaigua, again at Port Viljan, in the quarterfinals. The two teams last met in the final of Copa Rushmori 41 four years ago. “We need to sharpen up at the back and eliminate silly errors,” said Thor. He praised Anarr Ebergsson as “doing a lot more than just filling in” for Eyvar Mathiasson, but admitted that the team was still adjusting to playing without a dedicated defensive midfielder. “It’s a new formation and approach for us defensively. With wingbacks pressing high, it’s a lot of pressure on two central defenders. If we can tighten up defensively, I think it’s a lethal combination, though.” He would not be drawn on whether Sara K would be fit for Cassadaigua but suggested it was unlikely she would start; her availability off the bench “is something we’re keeping an eye on”. Tyrfingsson, for his part, said he was “enjoying wearing the armband” but would be “ready to hand it back as soon as Sara is ready”. “It’s been good to prove some doubters wrong,” he said of his own tournament form, while modestly adding, “But you could paint #9 on a trash can and it’d have a half dozen goals at this stage, playing in from of Kæja.”

The team are well aware of the strength of the side facing them. “We scored 17 goals in the group stage and have somehow ended up with the playoff bracket from Hel,” said Finnvarðsdóttir. “First Mytanija, now Cassadaigua, two every strong teams in a tournament where a lot of other favorites have fallen by the way side.” The Fillies are a popular team in Græntfjall, having made a good impression during the first football tournament played on Græntfjaller soil, Copa Rushmori 36, but have enjoyed a few turbulent years as they’ve missed successive World Cups and navigated a generational change from Morgan Rosenblatt’s era, but have a crop of highly talented young players coming through with the likes of Lexi McGregor and Shannon Cunningham, and won the most recent U18 World Cup with the Engle sisters. “They are a very good team and it’s going to be a big challenge,” said midfielder Erin Marshlily. “They’ve scored a lot of goals this tournament and they’re tough and strong.” She suggested the game might not take 90 minutes to decide. A large contingent of Snow Wolf Pack fans are on their way to watch the game, aided by its location – Port Viljan being one of the easier cities for Græntfjallers to visit thanks to the Lake Viljan ferry – and more sympathetic environment.

Personal touch, or cult of personality? Critics divided over new campaigning tactics

Kaija Michaelsdóttir is prominently featured in a new series of campaign adverts ahead of the forthcoming general election. Featuring the Progressive-Liberal Prime Minister and promising generic slogans like ‘HOPE’, the adverts mark a step change in a country where political campaigning has rarely been so personal. “The Prime Minister is enormously popular, with 77% approval to 23% disapproval: 54% approval gap, that’s unheard of,” says psephologist Hagalín Svavarsson at the polling company QuantumWotsits. “Yet the Progressive-Liberals aren’t polling nearly so well, barely 40%. When polled, a generic Progressive-Liberal candidate barely breaks even on approval-disapproval, and in some of the areas where they won at the last election, they’re in heavily negative territory.” Svavarsson said it was “almost unknown” for the Prime Minister’s personal approval to be so detached from that of her party but that it suggested the Progressive-Liberals, “once the wonks who liked to make a name with splashy policy”, would be approaching the campaign with a different tactic. “This time they’re going to get behind the leader and policy will be an afterthought.”

    Image

The government is helped by the relative anonymity of new Blue-Green leader Úddi Spóason. “The Blue-Greens have been through half a dozen leaders, none making any real impact, over the last five years,” says Orka Aðalráðsdóttir, political science professor at the Polytechnic University of South Háttmark. “While on the left, they’re in chaos.” It remains unclear whether the Left-slate will compete the next election under a united slate of candidates, or split into their constituent parties, amid fallouts over funding issues and internal policy divisions. With the National Democratic Front holding onto their traditional power bases but still bruised by their brief time in government, Reform 30/30 struggling to make breakthroughs outside the two largest cities, and the Liberal-Conservative Alliance fraying after their loss of relevance post-coalition, it’s an environment in which the Progressive-Liberals “could record an unprecedented second majority term” says Aðalráðsdóttir. “All the more bewildering because when you ask the public about policy, they’re not really with them.”

The Progressive-Liberal government are generally perceived to have turned leftwards in their years of solo government, having staked out positions on the right while in coalition with the LCA. Those years were marked by tax cuts, financial deregulation, pensions and civil service reform, and difficult but ultimately successful battles with the labor unions, not to mention military strikes on Jabal Akhdar and strict anti-terror laws. Having eked out a solo majority, though, issues such as climate change, child care, and health care have taken priority, while the government has quietly eased its position on immigration, introduced a tough new gun control law over the shrieking opposition of its former coalition partners in the LCA, and softened its position on drugs. “This week, the Prime Minister’s schedule is blocked out talking about green jobs, making polluters pay, and tackling human trafficking; it’s sucking up all the oxygen on the left,” says political journalist Pjetur Greipsson. But critics say the emerging cult of personality isn’t good for democracy. “Like many new democracies, Græntfjall does not have a sophisticated electorate,” says Aðalráðsdóttir. “There’s a danger we’re reaching a point of voting for personality over party, and that voters have little idea what kind of politics they’re giving sanction to.” A spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s office said the Prime Minister looked forward to “robust debate” in the forthcoming election and would be unveiling a manifesto with “concrete commitments to serve all Græntfjallers.

"Another close call"- Late penalty save from Bigombe highlights 2-1 win over Elmyia as Nyowani Kitara reach the QFs on home soil

We're off to the knockout stages here at the 43rd Copa Rushmori. We've got an ambitious team, with high hopes of success- with World Cup success in recent years, and four straight one goal wins in the group stages of this tournament, we've got a Nyowani Kitara accustomed to playing the close, high-intensity games that the knockout stages of a regional tournament will bring you. And this time, it brought us an unranked Elmyia side. Unranked, inexperienced? Yes. But certainly talented- they've got a terrifying strike pair up top that is the heartbeat of their team- if they get going, then the whole team will get going. But if they can't get going? Well... They can be stuck for a long day at the office.

That used to be Nyowani Kitara's calling card- but we've, over time, developed talent at other positions- the next step in development for Elmyia. From a strictly footballing perspective only, do we see ourselves in them a little bit? Much like us in the very early stages of our NT development- we've got some showstopping strikers, but not much else. But the rest, as we know, can come quickly. It's surely on track to come quickly for Elmyia. The hope for us, however, was that it wouldn't come too quickly- aka, they didn't start suddenly showcasing world-class talent at Bujukamba Public Stadium, on this very matchday. Or else, we'd suffer the consequences of an early exit, on home soil, from the regional tournament.

Fortunately, the opening 45 minutes of this game was probably the best half we had played all tournament. Elmyia looked a little shell-shocked at the occasion- the lights can get bright, at this stage, as the saying goes. And we were prepared for it- and took the fullest advantage. It would take just 8 minutes for us to score the opening goal of the game. A sloppy move from an Elmyia midfielder saw us flying up the pitch, and Olaf Svante delivered in a wicked cross for a diving Odede Angonga. The long-time #9, and the team's all-time leading goalscorer, was absolutely ready- the diving header was perfectly placed into the bottom corner, and just like that, we led 1-0.

We knew that these knockout games get intense, though- 82 minutes left, the game was far from over. But we were in a position, temporarily, to dictate. We weathered the inevitable flurry that Elmyia would give us, punctuated by a diving save from Bigombe in the 17th minute, as they tried to quickly equalize the game at 1 goal a piece. As we continued to regain our footing in this contest however, we really wanted to try and get to the half up 2-0. Yes, '2-0 is the most dangerous lead in football', etc.., etc... But it's still better than a 1 goal lead, undeniably. And we would get that goal- A Handsdotter pass to Owino Odede, who stepped past his defender and slotted home from just 6 yards out in the 38th minute, to give the Kitarans a 2-0 lead heading into the break.

We looked to be in complete control at half- and admittedly, we were. Probably right up to the hour mark. We had a chance to really put the game away, and make it 3-0- but Handsdotter hit the post off of a cross from Wang Jiahui, where he basically had a free header. The header hit the post, on an effort where he normally would have scored. After that, we started to settle in, focus more on defending- and that's when Elmyia reall threw everybody forward, anything to try and get a goal back here in the knockouts. They did just that- a Gina Whittingham volley in the 72nd minute made it 2-1, and ensured the last 20 or so minutes would have maximum tension.

That wouldn't compare to the tension in the 86th minute- when Sam Depel was taken down in the box by Catarina Malmquist. Penalty to Elmyia. A chance to draw level. Jackie Froggatt stepped up to take the penalty for Elmyia- but our veteran keeper, Odour Bigombe, was on top of it. Bigombe got a big hand to the ball, and pushed it away- a brilliant diving save for the veteran keeper, in a huge moment. It ended up being the key moment- they would never have an opportunity as good as that again, and we breathed a huge sigh of relief when, after four excruciating minutes of stoppage time, they blew the final whistle. Nyowani Kitara 2, Elmyia 1- off to the quarterfinals.

"An excellent win for the squad today- it was a tough game." Liang Wei told reporters. "We've got to do better to put opponents away when we have a chance- but we showed some great fortitude when things were teetering, on the edge of disaster, and found a way to make the plays necessary. The matchups only get tougher from here- but I've got great confidence in this squad." Nyowani Kitara will go off to Ibarnet to take on regional giants, Nephara. Former President Nafuna Akongo tweeted that this would be "a match that solidifies the great friendship between Nephara and Nyowani Kitara", and also that Medina Klose would be the "greatest Margravine in Nepharan history."

Fillies Top Snow Wolves to Advance,
by Caitlyn Dufresne, Concord Heights Times

The first tournament under the leadership of Chen Huikang continues to go well, as Team Cassadaigua knocked off the Snow Wolves of Graintjall by the score of 3-1, and will now be headed to the Blue Flower Arena in Dewayo to take on Sargossa in the semifinals. Based on the seedings, this head to head matchup was a #4 versus a #5, but as I have mentioned a couple times now, when you look outside those numbers, they were probably the most effective teams in the group stage, given the fact that they tied for the most goals scored in qualifying, and tied for the greatest goal differential. Because neither nation were able to sweep through their group, each getting a draw, there would be three nations seeded above them. Looking at the rankings, the Snow Wolves were #1 coming in, and the Fillies were #3, so this quarterfinal matchup would certainly be one to get excited for and probably had people tuning in from around the world, not just across the region.

For Chen Huikang, managing the Copa Rushmori side is his first official assignment as the manager of the team, and he is quickly making believers of many across the matriarchy. That will still be a work in progress, as fans have seen regional successes lately, and want to see the team make it back to the World Cup after failing to qualify for two of the last three. We have seen the Fillies look to set the tone early in matches, being aggressive right from the opening window, and that was an effective method of game planning for teams that you were expected to beat. Now, with Cassadaigua a slight underdog (though I'm guessing most people would have considered this an evenly matched game), would Chen look to do the same thing? The answer came quickly as the pink and black were quite conservative in the opening moments of the match, taking care of all their responsibilities in the midfield, especially, and not looking to make anything other than the safe play. Chen had talked about the fact that he was not going to make as a predictable team to play, and this would be an example of it. Ultimately, it would be the Snow Wolves getting the better quality chances over the first 25 minutes or so, but the positioning of the defense once again did a great job of forcing the opponent to shoot from angles where goalkeeper Stacie Thornton could get a good read on the shot, and make the needed saves. On the other end of the field, the early chances that the Fillies got were also put aside with a similar great effort by their own defense.

It was looking like the first half would go without a goal, but it would be Team Cassadaigua opening the scoring off a corner in the 42nd minute. It was expertly delivered by Kaitlin Millikan, with a touch that we have not seen for a very long time on such a play, likely not since Sierra Mattison over a decade ago. Lexi McGregor got up and finished it off to make 1-0, and that is where we would stand as we went to the intermission.

The second half would begin with Graintfjall controlling the play, and this time they were able to find some cracks in the defense. Stacie Thornton initially made a couple of fantastic stops to preserve the lead, but you can only face so much pressure for so long until something slips through. In the 55th minute, a one time teammate of Morgan Rosenblatt, Röskvi Tyrfingsson of AFC Treason, was grateful to have the cross delivered perfectly to his forehead, and it is a good thing, too, because he was well covered by Tiffany Brown, so if this was off by just a hair, even his shaggy red hair, the goal might not have happened. But it would be, and with that, the game was all tied up.

Fans of both sides were pumped up now as we moved past the hour mark, and you could say that each team had played a good game up to this point. For two teams that needed a coin flip to determine their seeding, it was no surprise that this was an evenly matched game, but someone was going to have to make a big play. In the 72nd minute, Chen Huikang made an eye opening decision to enter both of the Engle twins, Lauren and Chrissy into the match, replacing Jenna Stokley and Krystal Sherwin. The logic of the move made sense, but for him to decide to go to these two 18-year olds, who are labelled as our future in the midfield, in such a key moment against a great opponent in a big game, it may just mean that the future is very quickly becoming the present. Their youthful legs allowed the Fillies to get control of the match for a little while, and in the 78th minute, Lauren Engle delivered a smooth cross to Shannon Cunningham, who put the pink and black up by a goal.

With the team now up, naturally, the focus would turn to defense as Graintfjall did all they could to get the equalizer. The defense continued to do a great job of not allowing the Snow Wolves to get shots from the prime scoring areas until they needed to start sending more players forward in the closing moments. The risk of doing that is that it can backfire, and after Stacie Thornton made a nice 88th minute save, she delivered an excellent long ball that found Lauren Engle in stride, who then connected with Lexi McGregor. Lexi would showcase her precise finishing ability with her second goal of the match, and an exclamation point on a nice looking, 3-1 win. It might make the game look like it was not as close as it really was throughout.

Afterwards, McGregor was asked about her play, and the game itself, "Beating Graintfjall is massive whenever you can do it. That's a great team, they've won the World Cup, they've won the Copa Rushmori, they've pretty much done it all very recently, so beating them is always a big thing. I'm just doing my job, we're making the plays and executing. Coach put forth a great game plan today, and we are going to need to keep doing that going forward." I also asked coach Chen about the decision to enter the Engle's in such a key moment. In response, he told me, "You have to trust you're instincts, and at that point in the game, I really felt that the two of them were ready to make big plays. As soon as I got here, I realized that they are very smart for their ages, so when you factor that into it, and getting their fresh legs out there, I thought it was a good bet to roll with. They did a great job out there."

With this win, Team Cassadaigua advances to the semifinals and will take on Sargossa. While they are well respected outside the region, there is no denying that the Sargossans are a massive power within the region. They are seeded fourth, and came out of the group named after the great Stacie Kerrigan. The other semifinal features the hosts in Nyowani Kitara against our nemesis from the last World Cup qualifying cycle, Cabo Azure. You don't want to look too far ahead, but because Cabo Azure did essentially knock us out from making the playoff in the last World Cup qualifiers, that it would be a great revenge opportunity to play them in the final. That's for us as fans to think about right now. As for the players, all they are thinking about is Sargossa. "The Corsairs are one of the greats in this region," Chen Huikang told reporters, "they have more of a defensive makeup. Not excessively so, but they do favor defensive tactics, and that is a little different from the teams we have been playing. We will formulate a plan to counter it."

We can trust him, and if you can't make it to Dewayo, you can catch all the action on the Concord Heights Times App, so we hope you have downloaded it. You can also watch it on TV, or other device, but the app provides a nice, interactive experience. Check it out!

"All of this... all of this... is an unnecessary tragedy. The two of you are here in this office, in this skyscraper, in this city, because of events beyond your control. You did not decide to accompany your academy friend to that whorehouse where he died. You did not decide whether those CDs were left behind in the van or not. You did not decide whether this old woman, your fellow Roki, would remember you from a past life, nor did you decide whether she survived her fall or not. You did not decide how, or if, the Red Lodge would deal with your incursion into their gang territory. You did not decide to learn, or not learn, about the Black Lodge. 'Men make their own history, but they do not make it just as they please; they do not make it under circumstances chosen by themselves, but under circumstances directly encountered, given and transmitted from the past. The tradition of all the dead generations weighs like a nightmare on the brain of the living.'"

Sergeant Wen was standing in the doorway, nitrile gloves on her hands. In her hand she held a 9mm handgun. Seeing her friend, Ohimi lowered hers. "Wen? What's going on?"

"I read the papers every day. I hear about the poverty, and the violence. It's awful, what you all have to endure. It's hell. The legacy of what the Golden People built upon this land - their awful ideology - it projects a force, a material force. One that predetermines your sad lives."

"What are you talking about?" Ohimi helped Kosi to her feet, though she continued to sob.

"I'm trying to say, Detective - that I feel grief. Grief that residents of this new country have to live with generational trauma the way you Rokis do. Every night on the news, it's just story after story after story after story, about Rokis killing each other. Settling old tribal grievances through archaic brutality. Killing one another in cold blood in the dead of night. It's a social tragedy that I both professionally and politically lament... Roki on Roki crime."

Ohimi shook her head. "I'm still lost," she said.

Wen raised her pistol and shot Ohimi in the head. Blood sprayed out of both Ohimi's face and skull. Wen stepped forward into the office, trails of white smoke following the barrel of her weapon, to confirm that the deed was done. Kosirothi, already in a psychotic state, collapsed back to the floor, screeching. Wen stepped over Ohimi's body and crouched to speak with the old woman consolingly.

"'Let the sand cover me, dear Yothohosi. Even when the Holy Wind itself should forget where I lie, you shall not, for I shall be found wherever the dunes are taken by the warm breezes of each passing summer. You shall never forget.'"

She patted Kosi on the shoulder and handed the deranged street peddler the gun. Kosi took it in her ungloved hand, bewildered.

"The Black Lodge shall trouble you no longer."

Big shout out to Mertagne for (indirectly) helping to create this shadowy world of Naixese triads, for even though very few (if any) of the individual characters will be returning, the institutions referenced will have a major presence in future RPs.

International Edition - Football

Naixi Win Sets Up Dagan Danger

Blanco Borrayo reports from Dewayo;

It will be a riddle to puzzle scientists, philosophers and social media warriors alike. What exactly was it that turned Sargossa, distinctly average footballing nation when it came to the small matter of the World Cup, into a much more dangerous beast in the Copa Rushmori. Two years ago, the Corsairs were poor in the qualification campaign for World Cup 92, only to turn up to the Copa in Mytanija with a fire in both their eyes and bellies. Slavko Jelic’s side tore through the competition, only going out at the semi-final stage courtesy of the lottery of a penalty shootout at the feet of eventual winners Tikariot. The Corsairs then dusted themselves off to score a rare victory over Nephara in the third-place playoff.

Flash forward twenty-four months and the sequence seems to be playing out again. Slavko Jelic’s charges suffered a hugely disappointing collapse in the final four qualification fixtures, seeing an outside chance of a playoff spot instead becoming a poor fifth place finish. Then came the Copa Rushmori in Nyowani Kitara. Wins over Kirungabi, Gnejs and, funniest of all, The Polar Islandstates, followed. That teed up a last sixteen encounter with San Isidro Labrador, the best performing of all the second placed sides from the group stage. On paper it was a tough prospect, but the Corsairs ground out a win with a resilience that has been lacking on the wider world stage in recent years, if not decades. Which led to a quarter final with Naixi, a side riding the crest of a wave having just dumped out perennial title contenders Eura after a nine-goal thriller. The rankings favoured Sargossa. The form guide probably favoured Naixi.

Ironically, it was perhaps that amazing win over the Eurans that aided Sargossa. Naixi were bedecked in their olive green second kit for the game at Dewayo’s Blue Flower Arena. And they were out of the traps like a bullet from a gun. Run Ming Kwan liked his sides to be on the front foot and a regional cup quarter final was clearly not bringing out any cautious streak. Against the Eurans, another side that favours an offensive style (ain’t nothing more offensive than a Euran), it led to an absolute classic. Against Sargossa, and the Mytanar whose spent decades perfecting a counter attacking system, the fairy tale run of Naixi would come to an end.

Which is not to say the Corsairs had it all their own way, far from it. Jacobo Robles was forced into three smart saves in a breathless opening ten minutes in which Naixi threatened to overwhelm the darker blue clad backline. But the Corsairs soaked up the punches and when the opening presented itself, they threw in a big one of their own. Playing at pace is one thing, but when it goes wrong it can go very wrong. It was Qi Chao Hark who misplaced his pass in the middle of the pitch, gifting the ball to Fernando Moruga. Moruga’s reaction was magnificent, barely pausing before sliding a perfectly weighted ball through Naixi’s high line and into the path of Lucas Recoba. The El Nacional forward was presented with a clear run on goal and coolly dispatched the ball beyond the reach of Lu Fang Huang.

A second would follow shortly after. Again, Moruga was at the heart of it, pressurising Sa Kota Yue into an error. Recoba was once again in the right place at the right time and laid the ball off nicely for Orlando Segovia. The veteran midfielder brought a good portion of the Blue Flower Arena off its feet when he spied Huang off his line and chipped the ball from distance over the stranded Chongjibo keeper and into the empty net. The Corsairs had a healthy halftime lead.

Whatever words of wisdom Run Ming Kwan had shared with his team at the interval were nearly undermined a mere two minutes into the second half. It was a move worked on the training group, albeit one blessed with simplicity. Adrian Soriano whipped in a corner, Miguel Alonso flicked it on at the near post and his centreback partner Nicolás Riesgo, anticipating the move, swept it in at the far. Huang made amends for his first half faux pas by clawing the effort away. But the third would come and it would be another set piece. On the hour mark Enrique González curled a freekick around the wall and nestled just inside the post. In fairness to Naixi, being three nil down in a Copa Rushmori quarterfinal did not see their heads drop. The men and women in olive green still poured forward, and moments later they would give those who had made the trip from the Celestial Empire something to cheer. Lan Fang Fen took full advantage of some space on the edge of the Sargossan box to rattle in a low drive into the bottom corner of Robles’ goal. But it would prove to be a mere consolation.

The other quarterfinal ties threw up some interesting results. Oberour Ar Moro, the form team in the competition, having topped a group that included Mytanija and Tikariot, were soundly turned over by Cabo Azure. Nyowani Kitara, buoyed on by a raucous home crowd, edged out mighty Nephara in a thriller. And top ranked Græntfjall fell to the ever dangerous Dagans. Looking at the nations that have fallen by the wayside, those that remain must see this as perhaps their best chance to lift the region’s oldest and most prestigious sport trophy. Fourth ranked Sargossa will meet third ranked Cassadaigua for a chance to reach the final. Corsairs and Fillies are no strangers to each other, having clashed on twelve previous occasions. The balance of power is perfectly weighted, with six wins apiece. The only knockout match between the nations is also the most recent. It came in the final of this very event, at the thirty eighth edition in Mytanija. On that night in Esca it was Sargossa that prevailed. The Dagans will be looking to make amends.

Postby Cabo Azure » Wed May 03, 2023 3:34 am

By the strictest definitions, Cabo Azure is as urbanized as most Rushmori nations–Sao Simone alone accounts for half the islands’ population, and other urban centers like Portelo and Lagostim push the needle even more in favor of “urban”. With that said, the cities are mainly compact, isolated, and surrounded by a rural hinterland whose sparse population belies its cultural and economic importance. The majority of Cabo Azure’s islands are entirely or almost entirely rural, and many Azureans live their entire lives here, with only occasional forays into the cities.

Life on most rural islands is simple and revolves around agriculture and the exporting of agricultural products. Cabo Azure is self-sufficient in most foodstuffs and even exports certain foods, such as sugarcane, owing to the tireless work of rural farmers, fishers, and herdsmen. Many islands have their own small canneries or slaughterhouses, which provide jobs for the population and simplify the supply chain. Azurean agricultural products are packaged in-house and shipped to markets in other cities for sale.

Ships and boats are as important to rural life as they are to Cabo Azure’s cities; almost all mail, packages, and basic necessities such as groceries come to Cabo Azure’s rural islands via boat. There are broadly two kinds of boats that serve rural Azurean communities, those on fixed lines and “tramps”, which deliver specific packages to specific locations. Almost all ships and boats traveling between islands can carry both passengers and cargo.

88th minute, NYK v. Nephara level at 2-2, and NYK winger Wang Jiahui leading a counter-attack

The Kitarans were in business. "Ball- Ball!" Wang yelled, as Handsdotter sent him one that was just over the top of a right back, as the center back came to close in on him instead. Wang got the ball, and tried to step over to his right, more towards the center of the pitch, since the CB was coming from that direction. Just then, he felt the bone crunching tackle from behind from the Nepharan international- and went down in a heap. "OH, FUCK!" Wang yelled, immediately grabbing his ankle. Part of it was actual pain- it was a truly punishing tackle- and part of it was him selling it.

Nothing like a footballer selling an actually serious tackle, right? Fortunately, the referee spotted the foul- just on the edge of the 18, on the outside of it. He came over and showed a yellow card to the defender. While Nepharans were arguing with the referee before they set up their wall, it was another Kitaran striker, Odede Angonga, that waltzed over to help him up.

"Hey man, you good?" Odede asked. "This is your free kick bruv."

"Yeah, what a fucking moment, right?" Said Wang Jiahui. "Man, that was a beast of a tackle- but we've got this in a decent spot." A little close, might be hard to bring it back down after you get it over the wall- but certainly a solid position to go through it.

"Hey man- go through it. We'll get Olaf to stand with you, two dudes over the ball." Odede's idea was certainly from the training ground, but one of those designed to work in a situation like this. "I'll get myself inside the wall- and then simply fall out of the way. Go through me to the bottom corner."

Wang pondered it for a second. "Alright, let's do it." He nodded. After about a minute, they were able to finally set up the wall, and the Tumbran referee had used his vanishing spray to set the line. Angonga had done exactly what he had promised- gotten himself inserted in the perfect spot in the wall. The referee blew his whistle. Wang looked at Olaf Svante. The Nepharan Premiership winger took two steps forward, and stopped- then Wang Jiahui blitzed forward. He kept his head down, and put his foot through the ball.

He looked up- he had hit it right towards Angonga's chest. Or, where Angonga's chest was- the Kitaran #9 was falling down, and nobody was behind him. A diving Nepharan keeper could not reach the ball- that was the winner. "HOLY SHIT, IT WORKED- GOOOAAAALLLLLLLL!" Wang Jiahui was screaming as he sprinted towards the corner, towards a stable of crazy Kitaran fans.

Late Wang Jiahui winner generates massive upset win over Nephara to punch NYK ticket to Semifinal in Dewayo

IBARNET, NYOWANI KITARA- Is this really happening? Is this tournament run actually real? I've never seen anything like that. We went into the quarterfinals against Nephara, happy, but, from a fan perspective, surely this would be the end of the road. "Well, we knew that a quarterfinal run, with a loss to Nephara, considering how we performed in the group stages, would be a great result for this tournament." Said one fan. "We've never hosted a major international tournament before, in any sport. We've also never before even won a knockout stage game at the regionals- and we've only been to the knockout stages of this tournament now twice in our history. And this is what- our seventh or eight appearance here?"

The fan is right. And when the mighty Nephara came to town, it certainly would have been an acceptable. #2 in all of Rushmore. Multiple regional titles to their name. Hell- multiple World Cup titles to their name. One of three WCC triple crown winners(another of which was shockingly knocked early out of this tournament- the White Winter Queendom). And true to their stature, this quarterfinal was certainly not going to be too big for them- even if it was a nervewracking moment for us to be here. They were on the front foot in the early moments, trying to take what was certainly a rabid Nyowani Kitara crowd out of it early. And they were successful, at least temporarily- Kvasina assisting a talented Felixe Vetiver in the 6th minute for the opening goal of the game. The visiting fans were chanting- the home fans got the wind taken from their sails.

Not necessarily something Nephara does a ton- but they were able to counter with ferocity, enough to get that goal. But being so early, we couldn't let the early goal distract us from our plans- even if we needed an additional sense of urgency. We got our first real chance in the 12th minute, when Wang Jiahui hit a cross to the Dalaris City striker, Kuma Negasu- who headed well over the bar, for a goal kick. We had another quality chance just a couple of minutes later, when Kamzuni Chinwemwe was able to have a strike from range- but the keeper was always going to get there. In the 22nd minute, however, we'd finally tie it up. A shot from Handsdotter hit the crossbar, and everyone was scrambling for the rebound. Odede Angonga was there, sliding in, first to the ball- and pipped it into the back of the net.

Not the most beautiful goals- but at this stage of a tournament, all goals are beautiful, right? An early equalizer at the knockout stages of the Copa Rushmori- you can't go wrong with that! That gave us momentum, and showed our strat was working- playing through the center of the pitch, try to take advantage of our talented central midfield pair, especially Handsdotter. In the 37th minute, just 15 minutes later, we'd find our second goal. Ball being held around 35 yards from goal, and then, a well-timed run by Kuma Negasu, played onside by a beautiful ball from Arvid Handsdotter. Suddenly, he was in behind the defense. As the keeper came out, he hit it across, on the ground- and Kamzuni Chinwemwe was there for a finish into an empty net. 2-1 to Nyowani Kitara! Shockingly enough, we not only held our own against Nephara- but we took their opening punch, and held a 2-1 lead at half!

Of course, that's only halfway through the match- and you know how deep Nephara is. In the second half, they'd be able to hold the advantage, the lion's share of possesion- our defense would try and hold them off. Of course, we're not exactly known for our defending, and with Armoni Okombo having retired from the international game to focus on prolonging his club career, we have lost our only world-class defender. Ergo, Nephara was certainly going to have its chances- and they had a fair few of them. Bigombe was forced to make a leaping, scrambling save on an excellent, first-time shot from Lindse Kvasina. Even Demeter Constatine, in the 62nd minute, had a layoff to strike a shot- but hit the outside of the post.

For the Nepharans, they would look to their bench to equalize- Kestrel Anharbour entering the game for Brewer, as Anharbour is a much more direct option. And in the 71st minute, the equalizer came. Created, of course, by a creative Kvasina- a fantastic ball to push Anharbour into space, and then Anharbour having the confidence to try and outshoot the angle. The near post angle was not great- but she shot it with such pace, and placement, that there was absolutely nothing anybody could do about it. Anharbour's shot went upper 90, placed perfectly, and Bigombe simply could not get to it. Suddenly, it was 2-2, and the visiting fans were doing all the singing once again.

Both teams had opportunities to get a winner in the late stages- Vetiver had a one on one, first time opportunity, to take the lead in the 79th minute, on a cross from Loeher, but Bigombe made the save. Owino Odede came into the game for Kuma Negasu- and was disappointed on a free header in the 82nd minute to head it straight at the Nepharan keeper. But in the 88th minute, the opportunity came. Foul, yellow card shown, free kick for Wang Jiahui. And Wang buried the shot- Angonga was in the wall, dipped out of the way(may have taken a Nepharan defender with him- twii.tur was up in arms about it but the referee, nor the VAR official, saw anything). The shot went where he had been- no bend, just power and placement to the corner.

The former Yue international had scored the late, late winner- Nyowani Kitara held on for 6(!) minutes of stoppage for the 3-2 win. "WHAT. A. GAME." Liang Wei had told reporters following the match. "At our best, in these types of situations- this is the type of performance that our team is capable of pulling off. We went toe to toe with one of Rushmore's most historic teams- and won! Our fans have pushed us through here on home soil, yes. But I love this team, I love this tournament. Tonight- we celebrate. But tomorrow- we get back at it. Off to the Semifinal!"

Our opponent will be Cabo Azure- taking them on at The Stomping Grounds, in our nation's capitol, for a berth in the Copa Rushmori Final. Can we make the impossible happen?

The run continues,
by Caitlyn Dufresne, Concord Heights Times

While Team Cassadaigua has been underachieving in the World Cup as of late, success in the Copa Rushmori is nothing new. Following a 1-0 win over Sargossa, the Fillies advances to the championship game for the fourth time in seven editions. They were the winners in the 40th edition, but came up short in the title games of Copa Rushmori 37, 38, and 41. Many believed that it was the success here in the regional tournament that allowed former manager Brittany Byers to keep her job for as long as she did even though the team did fail to meet expectations in the World Cup. For Chen Huikang, the bigger challenge is still down the road in World Cup 94, but for now he has certainly made a positive first impression amongst our fans. Though it is not just them that are enjoying this run. Former manager Byers posted on her social media account that, "I'm so proud of the team for the way that they have bounced back in the Copa Rushmori. It's a tremendous group of players that we have representing our country, and if Chen can get more out of them then I was ever able to do, then I will be his biggest fan." Whenever we mention Byers, especially while in this context, we have to mention that she was never sacked. She resigned. Whether or not she was forced to is something that Cassadagans can debate for a long time.

In the game against Sargossa, another country that seems to do dramatically better in the Copa Rushmori than they do in the World Cup, the Fillies showed that they could play excellent defense.
The offensive tactics that our team uses will always be the first topic of discussion with this team, and it will always be true that people like talking about goals a lot more than they want to talk about defensive play or strong goalkeeping, we really have to tip our cap to this defensive group. I want to particularly point out the play of the two youngest starters: Tiffany Brown and Alyssa Marlin, who are each only 23 years of age. We know that their stock at home has been skyrocketing within the CSL, and they've made the most of their national team time up to this point, but this Copa Rushmori has been a lot different, and Chen really likes what he sees, "When I see Tiffany and Alyssa, I see a couple of players that can be a real key in getting Cassadaigua back to becoming a top-20 and then a top-10 team in the world rankings. They do not just play great defense, but they have excellent mobility. I have great plans for them going forward. It's not something that is going to happen overnight, but each of them have the skillset to implement my plans for them." More than likely Chen is referencing the attack abilities that both Brown and Marlin have shown at the club level, but didn't really get the green light at the international to do the same as much. "Yeah, I know what they do for their club teams, but you do have to be more conservative about it at this level," Chen began, "Defense has to come first, we have others that can attack. But, they are 23, and have massively bright futures ahead of them. As that goes on, then I would expect to see each of them get that green light more here with the big club."

The two of them, as well as the physical nature of Rachel Becker, really kept the Corsairs from getting much going on the attack during this game. This is something that I have been mentioning alot, but as we move on from the group stage and through the knockouts, the pressure and importance of each game picks up, and we are seeing the ability of these players to rise up and succeed even with that pressure. I really like what I see. Sargossa themselves prefer a more defensive style, so while this was a semifinal matchup, the Fillies have dealt with better offenses. Goalkeeper Stacie Thornton, the veteran behind these young fullbacks, is almost like an assistant captain back there, and has been playing very well, herself.

As for the Cassadaigua offense, they were mostly contained by the defense of the Corsairs, but with a 17th minute Lacey Sherwood shot finding the back of the net, the Fillies had the piece of mind that comes with a lead for most of the game. Lexi McGregor managed a couple of shots on net, but Jacobo Robles was able to make fairly routine stops on them. Shannon Cunningham was generally contained for the match, but that's not a problem as the team celebrates the 1-0 win, and will meet up with an opponent in the final that they will have no problem getting "up" for,

World Cup 93. Matchday 20: Cabo Azure 3–2 Cassadaigua. The game that essentially sent us to the Cup of Harmony. Cassadaigua finished in a third place with the nation of Eraman, but the tiebreakers that were chosen by the hosts meant that the Fillies lost that tiebreaker and would not make the playoff. Cabo Azure was able to be one of the teams that did make it. On matchday 9, the two sides played to a 3-3 draw, so it's pretty safe to say that "Las Maçaricas" were our biggest Achilles' heel. Now, in the final of Copa Rushmori 43, the two teams will play for the coveted title in Nyowani Kitara. Very rarely do you get a chance to get revenge on a nemesis like this. Yeah, you can beat them, but you're not getting revenge on them unless you deal them an equivalent result. In other words, beating them in a group stage game would not really be good enough. Preventing them from winning the Copa Rushmori championship while watching us celebrate the victory? Yeah, that will do it!

So far, the Fillies aren't really talking about the last World Cup and this revenge opportunity. But, I'm sure it has to be on their back of their minds. If we look at those qualifying losses, it's very easy to see that allowing three goals in each of those games is something that cannot happen again. We have seen some defensive adjustments to the team, with the increased roles of Tiffany Brown and Alyssa Marlin being the biggest difference. Will they be able to put us over the top, or will we be looking at another wide open game between these two where the Fillies will be hoping to prevail?

Whatever the answer is, let's hope that our second title is on the way!

Interesting sidenote: Cabo Azure manager AJ Zanetti is the current coach of CSKA Quebec. Fillies manager Chen Huikang is a former manager of CSKA Quebec.

Once, Concord Heights had been home.

When Queen Abigail was Princess Abby, the scared-shitless pre-adolescent girl, friendless and abandandoned by her blood, she had served a term of exile in Cassadaigua for the crime of being next in line for the throne after her older half-brother, King Reinaldo II. Immediately upon their father's death, Reinaldo had begun consoldiating power, seeking to forestall those who saw Abby as a better fit for ruling the realm. After he survived an assassination attempt, Reinaldo had become ever more paranoid, leading her grandfather to leave with his daughter, Princess Desdemona, Abby's "Auntie Dee", for the relative safety of Quebec, leaving Abigail alone in a pit of vipers. Reinaldo declared Abby's mother's, Carlotta's, marriage to their father illegimate, stripped Carlotta of her royal title and sent her to a widow house, and in the same fell swoop sent Abby to live out her adolescence in Concord Heights.

Those who use exile as a punishment fail to understand the human condition; they wish to not inhabit the same world as their exilee, but lack the will to kill them and live with the blood on their hands. Like Bonaparte and Lenin and William the Conqueror, leaders of a far-off continent, like Simba, the lion king, she would return from exile to rule. But before that, she would be granted the grace of a relatively normal girlhood in Concord Heights, where she would fall in and out of love, fret over exams, and study and admire the work of Queen Courtney, the Matriarchy's ruler, while rubbing elbows with the future Queen Cassie.

Today the only noticeable remnant of the Queen Mother's time in Cassadaigua is the clipped cadence of her Daigan accent when she speaks Terranean, and even that she can downplay when she placates Euran diplomats on their visits, adopting a more netural, Electrumite- or Gelderlish-sounding accent. Yet even in Cabo Azure, with a newborn and an enviable academic career, she could hardly have missed when Princess Caitlyn was set aside for the throne for crimes much less severe than her brother's. If her relationship to her husband Luis began to deteroriate soon after Cassie's assension to the throne didn't set off a bitter war of succession, the way Luis had predicted it would, thus giving Abby hope that the monarchy in Cabo Azure could be a stabilizing force, then it wasn't entirely a coincidence.

Years later, it would be Cassadaigua's strategic ambiguity, neither confirming nor denying that they would intervene on the royalist side of a hypothetical Azurean civil war, that left the Gang of Seven bereft of options and forced them to the negotiating table with Abbie and her team, where she lay the groundwork for the modern Azurean rennaissance. Unable to accuse Abby of being a foreign pawn, but equally unable to use force to get rid of her, the Gang had been forced to sit down with Abby. Using decades of political science acumen and her street-smart, no-nonsense Concord Heights attitude, Abbie talked them into a peaceful transfer of power, comfortable exile in Quebec and other places, and gave up only a single stipulation; that she would never rule in her own right, and Manuel would instead be crowned.

Abby wasn't a big football fan, but as a good ruler, she understood the sport's symbolic importance to her people. Being drawn in the same group as Cassadaigua in the nation's football debut in Copa Rushmori 38 felt poetic; Cassie and her family would witness the end result of what they'd done decades hence, bringing that scared little girl into their midst. Losing to the Fillies in the round of 16 six years later was a gut check, but a reminder that Cabo Azure had a long ways to go still. Being drawn against them again in World Cup 93 qualifying felt like a death sentence; how could anyone qualify out of that group? Yet the Macaricas had not only qualified, they had done so at Cassadaigua's expense, taking four points from their two encounters and relegating the Fillies to the Cup of Harmony.

Abby had always admired Cassadaigua, and in many ways wanted Cabo Azure to be more like the Matriarchy. She had originally intended her youngest daughter, Veronica, to go to university in Cassadaigua as her older daughter, Alexandra, had in Quebec, but Ronnie had other ideas. She would always be grateful for the safe harbor she'd been granted and the Matriarchy's tacet support in taking her country back, but tonight? She wanted to beat the bastards all over again.

Fillies Capture Second Copa Rushmori Title,
by Caitlyn Dufresne, Concord Heights Times

In a wild game that saw a total of nine goals be scored, Team Cassadaigua prevailed over Cabo Azure in what was a great game for those who like goals. Here in the Matriarchy, we like championships, and for the soccer program to win right now, on the heels of one of our more disappointing World Cup and Cup of Harmony performances, and with a new manager at the helm, this is a title that will be enjoyed. When CASE made the decision to, well, have conversations with Brittany Byers that led to her resignation (as once again, she was never officially fired), there were a slew of possible managers that could have replaced her. Many Cassadagan candidates had plenty of promise, but the decision was to go with Chen Huikang, a native of Yuezhou, who himself had something to prove. As team Cassadaigua celebrates their title on the field, there are two sets of eyes watching this with a little more at stake. One, obviously, being CASE. The other being the YFA, in Yuezhou. There will be some questions, at least for a day or two in their offices, as to whether or not they made the decision to get rid of Chen, I would imagine. Well, maybe a third set, just for the intrigue that it would entail for them: CSKA Quebec fans. Chen is a former manager for them, and current manager of Cabo Azure, AJ Zanetti is their current manager.

To his credit, Chen Huikang has not talked about coming here and using the Fillies as a matter of getting redemption. He knows he is coming to a storied national program that once again wants to be known throughout the world as one of the greatest. It's an admirable task for anyone, and with himself having the opportunity to turn it around, this is not about redemption, but about adding another chapter, potentially, to his legacy. He came here with a plan, to take the offensive structure that was present under Brittany Byers, and enhance it further. It was evident on the field where this would be, as the likes of Lexi McGregor, Shannon Cunningham, and Lacey Sherwood had more freedom to try and open up the game. He would preach structure and smart play within his midfielders, and he knew that right now that is seen as the weak link. Maybe the personnel he had at his disposal was not as good as it could be, but he did a great job getting the most out of him that he could. Kailtin Millikan had to clearly embed her name into the starting lineup now that she is healthy, and when the 18-year old Engle twins were called upon, they made the most of their chance. He didn't expect too much of them, and the way that they were employed during this tournament shows tactical expertise, in my opinion.

While there is a lot of mutual respect between the nations of Cassadaigua and Cabo Azure, Cassadagans in the stands know full well that Las Maçaricas is most responsible for the team's failure to qualify for the playoff in World Cup 93. Winning here would be worthwhile revenge for that, but the players on the field for the pink and black steered away from talking about the past. This is about the present and the future, and that is something being emphasized by coach Chen.

As has been the case in most of the games the Fillies have played, they looked to aggressively score the first goal of the game, and once again they got it. Five minutes in, Krystal Sherwin was in the right place at the right time to pick up a rebound of a shot from Shannon Cunningham, and give the Fillies the lead. But that would be very short lived, as just three minutes later, 22-year old Pio Mendonça got the equalizer and just like that, we were all tied up, and the tone for a game that would see a lot of goals was set. It should be mentioned here that Pio Mendonça plays for their manager AJ Zanetti with CSKA Quebec. In the 19th minute, Cabo Azure would take their first lead of the match as the captain Cleto Silveira placed a shot perfectly in the top left corner. It had been an evenly played game up to that point, and we did not see and real adjustments to the way the Fillies were going about things. Of course, there would not be a need to do this as Lexi McGregor and Shannon Cunningham scored 28th and 33rd minute goals, respectively, to give the Dagans the lead back, at 3-2. This is where the game would be at the intermission, but not before a massive 42nd minute save by Stacie Thornton on a Pio Mendonça shot that could have tied the match. Yes, even when there are so many goals, we can still talk about great goalkeeping.

The second half would begin with Cassadaigua getting the better of play, but Ambrosio Gomez was going to have his moments as well, making a pair of impressive stops on shots by McGregor and Kaitlin Millikan, and that would start to get some momentum back for his home side. They would capitalize, as Vasco Gouveia evened up the score in the 59th, and nine minutes later, it would be Las Maçaricas taking the lead on Mendonça second of the match.

With it now 4-3 in favor of Cabo Azure, Cassadagan fans began to wonder if we would see the addition of the Engle twins in the game, but it would not come.
Instead, he went with the other 18-year old, Rachel Wyman, to replace Jenna Stokley. This was a little interesting, but likely had some tactical reason behind it. Rachel looked good out there, though she would not really have anything to do with the comeback. The tying goal for the match was scored by Chloe Anderson, who had replaced Lacey Sherwood in the 72nd minute. Chloe's goal came in the 77th off a great pass from Millikan, and we were all tied up once again. With the way the goals had been scored in the game, I don't think many thought that the 4-3 lead would hold up, though Las Maçaricas had mostly done a good job in the second half of the match keeping the Fillies off the board.

The final ten minutes would see both teams have good chances to get their goal. But in the end, it would be a player getting what will be, for now, their signature goal: Lexi McGregor. It was a tremendous effort in the 87th minute by Lexi to get space for herself and to get by an incredible defensive player in Amilcar Branco. But the 21-year old McGregor, who will forever be known as proclaiming when she was 16 that she was already the best player in all of Cassadaigua, and has already led Starksville United to a title, getting her biggest international goal of her career. She talks a lot. She parties a lot, but at the end of the day, she backs up her talk. Now, it will be McGregor that will be known as being the one who scored the winning Copa Rushmori 43 goal.

After the goal, she did not do one of her backflips. Instead, she was focused on the task at hand of finishing the game off. We have seen Lexi show signs of maturing during this tournament more than any other tournament. She's still young, so maybe that's just going to take a little longer. Perhaps now, this title can only help her see that she is blossoming into an all-around player, and to see that hard work is rewarded. When interviewed about the goal, she showed that maturity more, "I'm just really honored to have been blessed with the opportunity. That play doesn't happen without my teammates, everyone did a great job, but when I had the chance, I went for it. It was nothing planned, just went with my instincts, and that guy Branco, he's not easy to get around. We got it done! Thanks to all of the great soccer fans, Cassadagan, Azurean, and everyone else for coming out to enjoy this game."

Will Lexi party it up after this game? "Of course!" she said, "At least this time no one will tell me that I shouldn't be!"
