Commiserations to Sharktail - although congratulations on your newly gained Associate status. Hopefully you can get some pride back in the second Test, you more than deserve it. Thanks for the help with the scorecard too!
Good luck to everyone else for the final round, as well - it's been a good season, and hopefully we've gained a few new RPers.

IRONWORKS GROUND (PITCH MOD.: -1)

in the 2022 edition of their handbook, the Plough Islands Cricket Association wrote:
IRONWORKS GROUND, REDCLIFF
Chimneys End (north), Pavilion End (south)~11 500 capacity-1 to -2 style modifiers (first-class)

Twelve kilometres upstream from the port of Marsh, set into the hillside of the country's highest point, and surrounded by nickel and iron ore mines, Redcliff city is the the industrial capital of the Plough Islands, and the mist in the sky above the Ironworks Ground is heavy with the acrid scent of creation. Despite all this, though, the name of the ground is something of an artifact; the iron works itself moved operations to a much-celebrated modern, efficient facility east of the city centre in 1989, and many of the old brick buildings either made way or were incorporated into what has become one of the biggest and best-equipped workers' recreation and welfare complex in the country, with the cricket ground at its heart.
The redevelopment also saw what was one of the Harrison Cup's most cramped outfields turn into one of its most open, although due to the addition of a nets and practice area to the southeast of the square, the midwicket/third man boundary can be several metres longer than the rest of the perimeter. The 'new' sides on the north and east are also considerably more comfortable for spectators, with unobstructed sightlines and more space to roam compared to the early 20th century pavilion and western stands, which shelter people on two tiers from within an intricate wrought iron framework. The two halves of the ground are connected to each other and the rest of the complex by an often confusing network of corridors and interconnected rooms, with new batters unfamiliar with the ground as likely to end up in the sanatorium baths as the pavilion entrance.
While most visiting teams will still regard the slow outfield and spongy grass as being a spinner's track, the Ironworks Ground has a reputation within the cricket community in the Plough Islands as the fastest pitch in the country, and this is largely due to location. Redcliff is high enough to escape the pervasive sea fog, and far enough inland to be sheltered from extreme weather; this drier microclimate, and meticulous preparation by the Cricket Board of Redcliff, generally allow for longer and higher scoring innings and an environment in which the relatively few in number pace bowlers of the islands can thrive, especially at the start of a match.
This is a place of high scoring matches; the first Test at the ground saw the Foxes hold the then top-ranked Liventians to a high scoring draw, and indeed in four Tests the Plough Islands are unbeaten at Redcliff. Only Krytenia, thanks to a six-for from fast bowling all-rounder Gavin Udall, have managed to come away from the Ironworks Ground with victory (in the 60th Anniversary one-day series), and as the highest capacity ground in the country outside of Sutton, the national team have always enjoyed significant support when playing here.

Player of the Match: Ilia Snelling (DAR)
Despite Win, Darmen Needs Help To Reach WTC Final

EASTFIELD LODGE - A strong partnership between Máel Sechlainn Brice and Theudofrid Milligan in the second innings and a player of the match performance by Ilia Snelling (who took 7-97 in the first innings and 4-51 in the second) helped propel Darmen to an eight wicket victory in the second of three Test matches in Eastfield Lodge. While the victory means Darmen has an insurmountable 2-0 lead in the series, the lack of a lead after the first innings (Darmen trailed by 16 runs) and victories by Milchama (5 wickets over Pratapgadh) and Gruenberg (10 wickets over Quebec and Shingoryeo) leaves Darmen in third place in the World Test Challenge league standings.

While Darmen is agonizingly close to earning a spot in the Test final, captain Sigmund Winter is aware that Darmen could be even closer to qualification if it had not trailed the Eastfielders at the end of the first innings. "I said it after the last Test and I'll say it again now, the four points a team receives for having a lead after the first innings, may be the most important points a team can earn," stated Winter after the match. Those points have eluded Darmen, who have had a lead after in the first innings in only five of their nine matches (55.6%), trailing both Gruenberg (6 of 10, 60.0%) and Milchama (8 of 11, 72.7%) in terms of first innings efficiency.

In an attempt to address this issue, Winter has brought all-rounder Eli English back into the lineup to replace Jean-François Simonson. Both men bowl off spin, but it is hoped that English will produce more runs with the bat to help the team put up a larger total in the first innings.

Even if Darmen scores a higher first innings total in their final match against Eastfield Lodge and takes the full amount of points, Darmen looks unlikely to reach the top two of the league standings without at least one of the two teams ahead of them losing. "It's unfortunate that we find ourselves in this situation, but that's sport sometimes," commented Winter. "We've got our job to do, but we're in need from some help abroad."

Warriors Using Luck, Maybe Skill, to Reach Brink of Test Championship

It's been a minute since any Milchamian national team has reached the final of a non-regional competition. Part of that, obviously, was the Isolation but even before then Milchama had generally been fading from relevancy in a variety of sports. However, as unlikely as it is, the Milchamian cricket team seems poised to break the spell and make the final of the GCF World Test Challenge. Of course, the biggest reason for that is the road series that the Warriors were supposed to play against Pratapgadh has been swapped since Pratapgadh ceased to exist midway through the series and Milchama got the home games. It also helps when you're mildly RPing to play a team that doesn't RP.

Either way this luck did help the Warriors in the last match as Milchama destroyed Pratapgadh to a 5 wicket win needing only 78 in the 4th innings and despite every top order batter trying to play T20 innings for some reason and failing there were few enough runs and enough good sense for the Warriors to get over the line. Now Milchama just needs to win one more game against a team that doesn't have a nation to go back to make the Test Challenge final. It should be easy.

Of course the one problem is that waiting in that final is Gruenberg the one team that Milchama decidedly did not play well against losing their only series all Challenge in a 1-0 defeat in Milchama. This was, of course, the first ever Milchamian series test defeat on home soil which is pretty bad. So in a road environment in Gruenberg it would probably be advantage to those weirdos instead of the Warriors. Hopefully we can get some more luck our way and maybe even beat Gruenberg but, in fairness, we've been more than lucky enough and we really cannot complain.

So the goal is simple win and we're in. Can we do it? God I hope so.

Spinners power Gruenberg to series win in three days

Gruenberg claimed the first Gruenberger-Quebecois series trophy as they wrapped up the 2nd Test in the Twin Cities inside three days. The 10 wicket win was a welcome rebound from a dispiritingly close 1st Test, and Ettexinor Broimbles praised his bowling attack for "delivering what was asked of them". The win puts Gruenberg in a strong position for the end of season rankings and a potential route to the World Championship final, though Broimbles was not to be drawn on that in the post-match press conference, saying he was concentrating on winning the third Test and claiming another "greenwash".

Armed with an extra spinner, Broimbles's side dropped both young seamers from the 1st Test, but was fortified by the return of veteran attack leader Brigveger Grovan, who took just 23 balls to make an impact on the first innings before Laurent Chevening played on off the inside edge. Jhexabrunk Saduqa struck twice, but it was quickly over to the spinners, who ended up bowling 82.5 of the 124.5 overs bowled by Gruenberg in the match. Umbar Qari continued his fine form, with Broimbles and Compoundinterest Hmnff remaining the team's surest handed catchers close to the wicket, and Quouodan Skejjibox helped snuff out some worrisome tail end resistance as Quebec rebounded from 92-6 to pass 200. The recalled Jett Tyrkkekkekklukkekklukekk finished things off with a catch behind taken smartly by Ystipug Contemnible.

For all his criticism of the selectors' choices, Broimbles had to admit recalling Tyrkkekkekklukkekklukekk was a masterstroke. Bowling with pep and energy, and significant turn on his legbreaks, Tyrkkekkekklukkekklukekk was enthusiastic in the field, audacious with the bat -- smashing 36 off 50 -- and in the second innings, outbowled Qari, whose waspish round-arm had fallen flat. Tyrkkekkekklukkekklukekk and Skejjibox worked their way through the Quebecois batting lineup, Skejjibox picking up a career best 6-61 and redeeming himself after a couple of mediocre showings. Tyrkkekkekklukkekklukekk's 3-99 was richly deserved and included a fine caught and bowled chance diving forward.

In between, Gruenberg had flayed Quebec's own spin heavy attack to the tune of nearly 500 runs from a little over 100 overs. Veryspicymediumsalty Skkrrrtltwibe set the tone with a commanding 96, let down only by yet another failure to convert to a century; Broimbles had no such reservation and turned a carefully compiled 50 into a majestic, stroke filled 100. It took a fine diving catch by Jang to dismiss him, but Gruenberg added 185 more runs for the last 5 wickets courtesy of Contemnible, Qari, Tyrkkekkekklukkekklukekk and Grovan, and even Skejjibox swished a mighty six over midwicket before Yang-Bordeleau finished things off. With a lead of 260, Gruenberg were in a commanding position, and the spinners delivered despite defiance from Jang, whose 57 was patient but still had room for 3 incredible sixes, and Eskelinen, who finished 95 unbeaten, short of a deserved hundred.

It took Skkrrrtltwibe and Hmnff just 33 balls to reel off the needed runs for the win, allowing the game to finish on day 3. Broimbles later denied he had hurried the win so that Quebec's players would have extra time to celebrate 4/20, noted as a particularly sacred holiday in the heathen's calendar, saying simply that "the game was there for the taking so we didn't want to waste an extra day doing it". With seeding for the World Championship up for grabs he is unlikely to call for any rest or rotation for the final Test, but will be troubled that at the end of the season, he is no nearer to determining his middle order partners after another set of failures from ! and Gurglesaxx.

    Probable team:

    1. Hmnff
    2. Skkrrrtltwibe

Final location:

Rajjenkali Mire of Goatliness

Ground: Rajjenkali is a tropical city in Gruenberg’s swampy interior. The Mire of Goatliness is a fairly small ground on a small elevation overlooking the ancient city; the historic city walls actually encircle the ground along one section of the boundary, into which the Pavilion is built; from the opposite end is the Royal Botanical Gardens, with tall trees providing a modicum of shade. One of the more modern grounds in the Gruenberger cricketing establishment, the Mire is well equipped and hospitable, and the populace are used to dealing with tourists, thanks to the famous Supremely Goat-Enabled Statues the city boasts.

Pitch: Rajjenkali’s soil is red and contains a lot of clay (which was used to make the Statues); as such, the pitch is flat and bouncy. Spinners need to bowl quickly, but they can get extravagant lift and quick turn if they do; seamers are however shit outta luck. It is more or less a very good batting surface, helped by the short boundaries, and the humidity adds to this, tiring out bowlers and fielders quickly. However, a good spinner can still pick up a hat-full if they can land their deliveries on the right length.

Weather: Rajjenkali’s ambient temperature isn’t as hot as the southerly cities, but it’s a very wet heat with extremely high humidity factors. It can be very difficult to keep the ball in good condition. As this is being played very late in the season the weather should be a little cooler, but with more chance of rain.

Pitch modifier: +6

Gruenberg head to 4th World Test Championship Final

Gruenberg's world #1 ranking, retained throughout most of the latest season of Test cricket, will be tested one final time on home soil as they head to the Rajjenkali Mire of Goatliness to play Darmen in the World Test Championship Final. It is the fourth such final Gruenberg have played in, having featured in the very first, and in the most recent one, both of which they lost. Their sole World Test Championship title came during season 7, when an utterly predictable Benny Enchante century led them to victory over Liventia in the 2nd Test of a 3 match series, following a draw in the opening Test. In an auspicious omen, that victory came at Rajjenkali, meaning Gruenberg will be returning to the venue where they last lifted the trophy.

The regular season ended on a down note, with a defeat to Quebec and Shingoryeo in the dead rubber 3rd Test, but Gruenberg can still look back on four Test series wins in a row over the last year. Led by captain Ettexinor Broimbles with the bat, and spinner Quouodan Skejjibox and seamer Brigveger Grovan with the ball, the team has been boosted by the discovery of two new talents: allrounder Umbar Qari, expected to be a key contributor at the spin-friendly Rajjenkali ground, and opening bat Veryspicymediumsalty Skkrrrtltwibe, who despite failing to score a century all season has set a positive tone at the top of the order alongside veteran Compoundinterest Hmnff. With Transportflowmap Renkauer out injured for much of the season, Jhexabrunk Saduqa has emerged as a very dependable second seamer besides Grovan. Ystipug Contemnible has been a dynamic lower middle order presence with the bat, and Gruenberg's lower order have frequently contributed valuable runs.

Still, uncertainties linger over the team. The exciting young talent ! made a splash early on, but has struggled for runs since being moved up to 3 in place of Wengerzein Sempauer, whose massive double century against Milchama was not enough to keep his place with no other score of note in several innings. Nor has a replacement middle order bat been found as Gurglephlaxx Gurglesaxx and Vizession Drak have failed to impress. While Enchante and Hmnff have caught brilliantly, traditional Gruenberger failings in the field, with dropped catches and lazy efforts late in long days, have also recurred. It is a team that, despite its ranking and record, still seems unsure of its best look.

The Test at Rajjenkali is likely to feature two or even three spinners, with the possibility of keeping Jett Tyrkkekkekklukkekklukekk in the side; the bouncy legspinner has impressed with bat and ball, and would seem to offer more than a third seamer. Gruenberg would claim the Test Championship in the event of a draw, but the decision to host the game at Rajjenkali rather than Flurthwel suggests a team genuinely looking for a result rather than content to bat out for a draw. Still, the temptation to fortify the batting lineup with an additional specialist batter will be strong. Broimbles is for now playing his Go-at pieces* close to his chest. "Whatever team the selectors give me, I guess that's the one we'll play," he said.

Led by captain Sigmund Winter, Darmen's team features formidable batters in Theudofrid Milligan and Kenny O’Callaghan, while their attack is led by seam bowlers Alf Dickenson and Corwin McAlister. Navigating a tough schedule against Ko-oren and Liventia, as well as Pratapgadh and Eastfield Lodge, they finished the season ranked in second place. Gruenberg and Darmen have played 7 prior Tests, a 4 Test series in Gruenberg (won 3-1) and 3 Test series in Darmen (won 2-1); both, however, came over a decade ago, and no players from that squad remain in the current Gruenberger team. "Happy memories of that tour," said allrounder Xxuddu Gguddu, who played in Gruenberg's win in Darmen, "But it's time for this team to create some new memories."

    Probable team:

    1. Hmnff
    2. Skkrrrtltwibe
    3. !
    4. Broimbles*
    5. Gurglesaxx
    6. Drak
    7. Contemnible+
    8. Qari
    9. Grovan
    10. Saduqa
    11. Skejjibox
* Card games are not popular in Gruenberg, but the strategy game Go-at is beloved.

Player of the Match: Eli English (DAR)
English Propels Team To Final

EASTFIELD LODGE - Not only did Eli English return to the Darmeni eleven, but the 24 year old all-rounder also etched his name forever in Darmeni cricketing history with a 186 run performance that earned him Player of the Match honors and Darmen a bonus point victory as they defeated Eastfield Lodge by an innings and 185 runs. That bonus point was crucial in propelling Darmen past Milchama in the World Test Challenge standings and into second place, earning the team a spot in the World Test Challenge Final.

Along with his fellow batting partners Kenny O'Callaghan and Bud Bachmann, English righted a listing Darmeni ship that had lost opener Máel Sechlainn Brice midway through the second over and power hitter Winston van der Zee to a golden duck. A mini-partnership saw captain Sigmund Winter and Theudofrid Milligan combine for just 38 runs before Winter departed for just 19 from 20 in a rather disapointing showing, while Milligan reached his half century before being castled by an Eastfielder bowler. While still early in the match, Darmen's attempt to post as large of a first innings total as possible to secure the four points on offer to the team with the lead after the first innings appeared to be fairing poorly.

At lunch on the first day, Darmen was sitting at 86/4 and in danger of being bowled out before the day ended if things continued as they were. O'Callaghan and English settled into a rhythm that lasted for the rest of the day, consistently rotating the strike and hitting boundaries only when the Eastfielder bowlers presented opportunities to do so. Despite entering the match after his partner, English was the first to reach his century, doing so just after tea. O'Callaghan followed suit an hour later, only for English to one up his partner and reach his ton and a half just before stumps. Having both survived the first day, O'Callaghan departed quickly as day two got underway, being replaced by Bud Bachmann. Bachmann picked up right where O'Callaghan left off and anyone who had missed the latter's dismissal could be forgiven for thinking that O'Callaghan was still in the middle.

Eventually English was caught at long on as his attempt at a third six of the innings fell just short, but by then the damage was already done. Bachmann remained in the middle for the rest of the innings even though Darmen's tail order failed to do much to support him. Ilia Snelling employed some inspired shot selection to make the final wicket partnership as exciting as possible, but eventually his impersonation of van der Zee came to a screeching halt when a laughable attempt at a reverse sweep missed the ball entirely and he was hit plumb in the pads.

While Darmen's strategy of putting up as large of a first innings total as possible had been meant to maximize their points takeaway from the match, most were anticipating that a loss by Milchama would be necessary if Darmen was to have any chance of reaching the WTC final. A bonus point victory for Darmen, which would make the result in Milchama irrelevant unless they too achieved victory with a bonus points, had not really been on the minds of anyone, especially considering that despite winning both of the matches in Eastfield Lodge, the Darmeni team had not done so in dominant fashion. But with a total of 489 posted in the first innings and the four points for a first innings lead almost certainly in Darmen's possession, a bonus point victory became a real possibility. Darmen's bowlers were now tasked with restricting the Eastfielders to as low a score as possible while also taking wickets as fast as possible in an effort to enforce the follow-on.

And they did just that, putting Darmen in an excellent position to grab the bonus point victory and leap frog Milchama for a spot in the WTC Final. Ilia Snelling took a five-for as Darmen smothered the Eastfielder batters, who were out for just 151 runs in 44.1 overs. With a lead of 338 runs, the Darmeni bowlers needed only to repeat their first innings performance to seal the deal. Although Darmen's spin bowlers went quiet, recording just one wicket in the second innings compared to the six they had in the first, Darmen's pace bowlers picked up the slack and restricted the Eastfielders to almost the same total they had had in the previous innings. The win was an excellent one for the Darmenis, but celebrations were muted as everyone turned their attention to the Milchama-Pratapgadh match. Not until Milchama lost their first wicket in the second innings of their match, denying them the possibility of a win by 10 wickets and a bonus point, did either the Darmeni team or players celebrate as Darmen reached their third WTC Final in the past five seasons.

RAJJENKALI, GRUENBERG - We've been here twice before, to the Rajjenkali Mire of Goatliness that is. Our first trip to the venue is one we'd rather not talk about, as Gruenberg clinched the series win with a victory by an innings and 100 runs. It was not a great way to start Season 5 of GCF Test cricket, although Darmen did rebound to win seven of their remaining ten matches that season, under the leadership of captain Matthew Johnson.

Thirty years later, Darmen's fortunes at the Mire of Goatliness would be reversed, as they won their Super Eights match against Krytenia by eight wickets in the 2nd edition of the ODI World Trophy. It would be their last victory of the tournament however, as losses to hosts Gruenberg, the eventual champions The Sarian and the Plough Islands followed. Darmen ended up finishing seventh in the Super Eight group, missing out on the semifinals.

What can be gleaned then from Darmen's past results at the venue? Bowling will be key, in particular the bowlers ability to take wickets. In the Test match, Darmen took only seven of Gruenberg's wickets in their only innings of that match and two of those were run-outs. In the ODI match, the Darmeni bowlers took just eights wickets, allowing Krytenia to bat their full 50 overs. There will be immense pressure then on the Darmeni bowlers, spinners Ilia Snelling and Eli English in particular, to tame Rajjenkali's batter friendly pitch and keep Gruenberg's innings as short as possible.

There have been calls by many pundits and fans for Darmeni captain Sigmund Winter to drop right handed pace bowler Corwin McAlister from the eleven and return Jean-François Simonson to the lineup, in order to give Darmen three spinners while retaining that batting ability of all-rounder Bud Bachmann and Alf Dickenson's left handedness. Dropping McAlister for the final would be a tough move however, especially considering that he is coming off of a six wicket performance in Darmen's most recent match and is widely considered to be Darmen's best pace bowler.

Winter has some tough choices ahead of him as he tries to put Darmen in the best position possible to win the WTC Final. His Darmeni team has just as tough of a challenge facing them in overcoming the opponents Gruenberg, who have a record of 6-1-2 in nine matches against Darmen.** Darmen's second Test championship is tantalizingly close and all Darmeni fans will be hoping that the Rajjenkali pitch and its mire of goatliness isn't too much of an obstacle for Darmen.
