Corrupt Dictatorship

Postby Trans-Dniesters » Wed Apr 26, 2023 8:19 am

Pridnestrovia, like many other countries who came under the rule of a socialist or communist regime in the 20th century, experienced a period of rapid industrialization in order to help the nation become more competitive with its neighbors and rivals. Pridnestrovia transitioned from being a mostly agricultural and agrarian territory that produced mostly grain with some minerals and natural resources to an exporter of vehicles and heavy equipment such as trucks and tractors. For a time, Pridnestrovia even became a known exporter of military arms and equipment from rifles and ammunition to tanks and other such armored vehicles. Despite this, many farms remained in the country, most of them collectivized but there were some farms that remained in the hands of citizens simply due to the fact that they were too small to be included in collectivization. Even during the post-communist years, from Galdar Rodionovich Umayev’s tragically short term to the dictatorship of Stepan Stepanovich Stepanenko to the present day, farms remain a large and visible part of rural life in Pridnestrovia. After all, if they don’t grow the food that feeds the state and the people then who will?

Throughout all the changes in leadership and ideology, life remained pretty much the same for many rural Pridnestrovians. Either they worked in the farm or a nearby mine or factory, depending on where they actually lived. The only real thing that had changed in between regimes was whether the plant or mine or farm was owned by the state or an oligarch. This meant that many of the usual ideological differences that existed between the urban and rural populations didn’t really exist in Pridnestrovia. Most rural Pridnestrovians could not care less if they were still under the Communist Party or if their country had been democratized. Most rural Pridnestrovians, and most Pridnestrovians in general really, only cared if the government was doing everything that it could to maintain Pridnestrovia’s position of relevance in the international stage. This was what the old Communist regime had done to the country during its peak in the 1950s and 1960s, explaining the prevalence of older people who still remembered “the old days” more fondly than their younger brethren. That didn’t mean that the older generations who were still living were all ardent communists though; yes, some of them were still card-carrying members of the Party, but most of them had moved on and just wanted their country to remain relevant internationally.

Of course, the younger members of the rural class run the gamut of opinions about their country and their government, a side effect of the introduction and eventual viral spread of the Internet into Pridnestrovia. Now the people and the youth didn’t have to rely only on state-approved media to tell them about what was happening in their country and the rest of the world and how it was all to the benefit of the Pridnestrovian Republic. Everyone had their pick on which news outlet to listen to and whose opinions aligned with theirs. Dissidence was still frowned upon and occasionally handled with extreme prejudice, but for the most part people could now say what they wanted to say and they didn’t have to worry about their safety or the safety of their families when saying it. Young rural Pridnestrovians have a more varied range of political ideals from traditionalist conservatives to live-and-let-die libertarians to even progressive socialists. As was the case when these groups have come together in recent years, there were lots of debates and the occasional fistfight between those who believed in “clashing” ideologies, but at least they could all pride themselves that they had not gone as crazy and overboard as these same groups in the West.

The interior of the warehouse smelled like petrochemicals and charred wood. Indeed, the remnants of upper floors were visible above as black and gray stubs jutting out of the soot-blasted brick walls, multi-angled sepulchres to bygone industry clawing chaotically out of the walls. Here, a midnight black beam stretching far enough away from the ramparts of the warehouse shell, there, the crisscross of the collapsed wooden shards of the third floor. It was unnerving to be sitting on the floor, barrels of guns leveled unceremoniously at heads, and glancing skywards at uneven junctures to check and see if the ceiling was in the mood to give up all hope and collapse upon all of them.

Kosi was right, thought Detective Ohimi: there were no legitimate businesses operating out of this hellhole. What had happened here? Crates had been stacked in such a way that they could be used as rudimentary shelves for ammunition magazines, stacks of crappy old compact discs, and bottles of hard liquor, but they had to be placed where there were no piles of fire-blasted wood blocking the way. Did a bomb go off? Was there a meth lab fire? The timing was poor for opening a line of inquiry with their captors (a gang of gray and black suit-wearing hooligans who eschewed neckties but who were all wearing sunglasses), but as a policewoman her curiosity was piqued, even in this grave situation.

Kosirothi had no such ability to fuel an internal monologue or think abstractly about their situation. She was moaning at a moderate volume, her aggrieved voice echoing off the naked brick walls and shattered black remnants of floor. Her quavery voice annoyed Ohimi, both because of its natural acoustic qualities but also because it reminded her that she had already nearly killed this poor old woman once, and now here she was, brushing shoulders with the Grim Reaper once again and dragging Kosi along for the ride.

"Kosi, calm down, it's going to be all right."

"Shut up," one of the thugs shouted at Ohimi before kicking her hard in the shin. "The boss told us you aren't supposed to make a fuckin' sound until he gets here."

"When's he get here?" Ohimi asked with a smirk.

"Shut up!" The guy wound up and gave her another massive kick, against which she was defenseless because her arms were bound. "Roki filth!"

"You guys must be pretty tough. Getting put in charge of guarding two women, one of whom is an 80-year-old who I know you know doesn't remember a god damn thing. She doesn't even remember her own name. She's no threat to you and you know it."

"It's not her we're worried about, you stupid bitch. You think we haven't heard what you did to those Black Lodge crooks? Four of them killed in cold blood on the street in the Seaport District. Don't know what kind of fu they teach out in that dump you disgusting Rokis come from, but it's nothing the boss wants getting loose."

"Black Lodge? I thought you guys were the Red Lo-"

"SHUT UP!" And he kicked Ohimi again, this time in the ribs. Her whole body seized up and she keeled over to her side. She could still see Kosi rocking back and forth, tears streaming down her face as she continued to wail.

"Stop," a gruff voice said calmly from the other side of the warehouse. "That's enough, guys."

A short and tubby man walked around a hill of grime-stained charcoal. He was dressed extremely informally, particularly in comparison to the upper-middle class businessmen affectations of the other gangsters. He wore a simple tan-colored tunic and carried two bloody meat cleavers in each hand. A single braid of jet black hair descended from the back of his head. Ohimi noticed the blood on the apron he wore around his waist and couldn't help but allow her anxiety to rise. He saw her stare.

"Oh, don't be concerned. It's chicken blood. I own a butcher's shop and I prefer to work as many honest shifts as I can."

Ohimi said nothing, while Kosi continued to moan.

"You Rokis always seem to be so distrustful. You forget were brothers in arms not so long ago! The Golden People forced us Naixese to toil, branded us, tortured us, killed us if we would not work harder, they built ranches and vineyards on your homelands. So we overthrew them! Together!"

"The Golden People are not the ones building ranches and vineyards today," Ohimi said icily. "Go visit my hometown. I implore you, go see it for yourself. It's called Qolosocho Township. Go see who's constructing the settlements now."

"Yes, well, we, the Sanhehui, regret many of the practices of the current government, which we consider illegitimate," the man said as he handed the meat cleavers to a subordinate.

"Is that why you sent one of your goons to go blow up the Celestial Councilor last week?"

"Ah, you've heard the news?" he asked, smiling, as he wiped his hands on his apron.

"I know who you are. We know who you are," she gestured her head toward the shuddering Kosirothi. "You're the fucking Red Lodge. You said it yourself. Sanhehui. The Red Lodge. You're gangsters."

"We are, I'm afraid," the man answered with a sigh as he removed his bloodstained apron and handed it to another lackey. "You've got most of it right. The only bits you've got wrong are, well, the most important bits. My name is Fu Quan, by the way. Pleased to meet you."

"Oh, the pleasure is all mine," Ohimi answered sarcastically. "Such a delight to make a new friend. So, buddy, are you happy that you put up all those flyers? Are you happy that you called for violence against the Naixese heads of state and then made good on your threat? You must be pretty proud of yourselves."

The man sat in a chair.

"Detective, we circulated materials explaining our ideology, yes. We wanted to present a manifesto. We are often referred to by you law enforcement types as a 'triad,' but we are more than a simple gang. We believe ourselves to be the only legitimate descendant of the Sanhehui, or the Three Harmonies Society, a fraternal organization from the Old Land, which was itself a sect within a larger fraternal organization, the Tiandihui, or Heaven and Earth Society. But we are not the only claimants to this lineage. There are other groups, other triads, with different priorities and different methodologies. Most of us are Ming loyalists of some type or another, and most of us believe the pro-Qing revisionists at the head of the Naixese state are dangerous and fraudulent. But not all.

"Some have a reputation for acts of violence so vile I cannot even speak of them. We, the true Sanhehui, would never stoop to that low. We didn't kill the Councilor. We do not have the capacity for that sort of operation. We are one of the smaller groups; our allegedly puritanical view of the Tiandihui texts is considered too 'extreme.' We have the ability to run very basic shakedown operations, nothing more," he said, gesturing to the afflicted Kosi. "The rumors circulating about the Red Lodge, the true Sanhehui, that we are sophisticated assassins, are falsehoods spread by the real perpetrators."

"I don't believe you," Ohimi said viciously. "You killed my partner. He was a good kid. You killed him in that clothing shop in the Seaport District."

"I know the incident of which you speak. That was not the Red Lodge. We do not perform assassinations, not of police detectives, or of high-level politicians. I repeat, we do not have the capacity, nor do we want to have the capacity."

"Don't fucking lie to me. The CDs are right over there, sitting on a crate. Pirated albums. I'm looking right at them! You're Kosi's supplier."

"Yes, we're her supplier. We were her supplier, until ten months ago. But you should not be looking for her supplier. You should be looking for her buyer."

Ohimi's head was spinning. It had occurred to her many times that the CDs could have wound up in the murderers' conversion van because they had bought them from Kosi, but because her old friend didn't keep any electronic records, or records of any kind, there was no way to examine any of those transactions. They were dead ends - huge holes in the case - that had been easier to simply ignore.

"Who was the buyer?" Ohimi questioned hoarsely.

"Only she knows," said Fu Quan sadly as he nodded at Kosi. "But we believe it was someone acting on behalf of the Black Lodge."

"The Black Lodge?"

"Yes," he said, staring into space. "The Black Lodge was once the weakest of the five lodges, hundreds of years ago. It teetered on the brink of extinction for many decades during the days of the Old Land. Then, its last major scion passed away. It was a sad day - the Black Lodge was an ally of the Red Lodge at that time! It was the end of the Black Lodge. Or so we thought. Then, the Golden People arrived. Opium flowed into the Old Land like floodwaters from a bloated river, daily ships tempted the first Naixese away from their homes in the Old Land, and out of nowhere... entirely by coincidence... the Black Lodge surged with members. New recruits. A new family took over. A family we had never heard of. They were not friendly to the Red Lodge, and our friendship was extinguished.

"In the century-and-a-half since, they have vastly surpassed us, I am afraid to say. The Black Lodge is now the largest, and most secretive, of the triads operating in Naixi. Their extortion targets are not small-time torrented CD peddlers downtown. They're massive, multi-billion haojuhe businesses. They bribe and influence Naixi's most influential politicians. And kill them, apparently, as well."

"Why would they have wanted to kill me? And kill Hi Yuan?"

"I don't know. I'm sorry, detective." Fu Quan gestured back to his suit-wearing henchmen. "She's not here to shut us down, she wants to know what happened to her partner. Untie them."

"But boss-"

"Do it!" Fu Quan shouted sharply. They obeyed. Ohimi cautiously extended her arms so that the goon could cut the ropes around her wrists. He glared at her resentfully as he did so, then moved on to the still-inconsolable Kosi, who continued to moan.

Ohimi stood and faced Fu Quan. "You can't help me at all?"

He stood as well, though he barely surpassed her in height. "I'm afraid not. Not directly, at least. I cannot afford to run afoul of the Black Lodge. They are far too merciless and far too powerful."

"Do you know anyone who can help me bring them to justice?"

Fu Quan chuckled. "Bring them to justice? Doubtful. But I can tell you one bit of knowledge I was curious to learn recently from some of my ears on the street. The 'security contractor' who betrayed his own countrymen by killing them and the Celestial Councilor? The one who the media are all saying is on our payroll? He's a patsy. He's an ally of no-one, not the Red Lodge, not the Black Lodge. We think the Black Lodge are trying to set him up, and pin it all on us. And him."

Ohimi stared at him incredulously. "So you want me to interview a man who is in Level One Detention? INSR? 'Incarceration for National Security Risk?' That's your tip?"

He shrugged. "He's an innocent man trapped in the clutches of an evil triad, detective, just like your partner was. You can help him or let him die. The choice is yours." Fu Quan turned to leave. "Oh, actually, there is one more lead you could follow up," he remarked, turning back toward her slightly.

"What's that?"

"We recently discovered the identity of one of the Black Lodge's many extortion targets. Normally these things are kept under wraps. He's the owner of a small but growing fashion label based here in Qiawutian. He's very high profile."

"How high profile?"

"He plays for the Naixi national football team. His name is Jen Ta Jin."

The Polarian Menace

Roberto Morán writes;

The geo-political situation of modern Rushmore is very much weighted towards Terranea, at the south eastern end of the continent, where powers of the likes of Electrum, Eura, Ceni, Valladares and Nephara jockey for position and influence. Not ever has it been thus. Decades ago, when those aforementioned modern powerhouses still toiled in relative isolation, Rushmore’s centre was on the other end of the continent entirely. Far to the north west, beyond the Xandrian Sea and The Vatmark, beyond Lake Branta and the cradle of aboriginal Rushmori civilisation now know as the CNCR, sit the island nations of Oygruppen. Candelaria And Marquez, Pasarga, Nethertopia, Sargossa, West Zirconia and, when they chose to pass through, The Wandering Isle. This was once the political heartland of Rushmore. It was here that one of the region’s great footballing rivalries was forged.

The island nations of Oygruppen were, by necessity, nations of ship farers. The waters of the Gary Sea, De Onbenaamde Waterleemte and the Eagle Strait were awash with ships bearing the colours of the local powers. The black trident of Sargossa was one such colour. Under its fabric the ships of Sargossa headed south, establishing colonies in Branta and off the Goose Coast, and north. It was these northern passages, across the vast mass of the Sea of Sibir, that led Sargossan vessels to the cold and rocky shores of the islands that became known as the Polar Islandstates.

It was to be a meeting of two widely differing cultures. The sophisticated pioneers from the south came face-to-face with the hardy, seal fur clad natives of the inhospitable islands. They were a hardy folk but bonds would eventually be forged. Or so those brave pioneers believed. Sargossan sailors introduced much to the northern islands, including fostering a desire to spread their own wings. Unbeknown to them, the menace was born. Soon, from their rocky fastnesses, Polarian settlers were cropping up all across the outlying territories of the Sargossan heartland. The Fallenmarca Islands, Conscillo and San Karbino to the north west and Kűlmsaar and Terra Escocia to the east all received a steady influx of boats filled with northern visitors.

Hospitability has long been a trait of the Sargossan people and graciously they welcomed their Polarian guests with open arms. In return they received threats, violence and, over the course of years, the eventual ousting from their own lands. Such was the enmity between Sargossa and the Polar Islandstates born. Enmity that has largely been played out in the modern era, a brief security operation on Kűlmsaar aside, on the football pitch.

The first such encounter was a relatively sedate affair, a narrow Sargossan win in what was a preparation match ahead of the Polarian hosting of the fifty ninth World Cup. A point proven for the Sargossan side, in what was a politically significant game played in the disputed territory of Kűlmsaar. But it was perhaps the Polarians who took away the most from the fixture. They saw the importance the Sargossans placed on sportsmanship and fair play, and they sought to use it to their advantage. when the nations met again, the Terns used every dirty trick in their repertoire to steal a win in the final of the fifteenth Copa Rushmori. That fixture set the tone for future encounters, with the brave and noble Corsairs toppled by the underhanded tactics of their northern foes time and again thereafter. They did it at World Cup 66, twice at Copa Rushmori 18 and then again at World Cup 72.

Now, after a long absence, the two nations will clash once again. And it is a great hope that this time the brave Corsairs will temporarily forgo their commitment to old fashioned fair play for a far more pragmatic approach. Do that and Sargossa’s passage through to the next round would be assured. It would of course be little comfort in the face of the many historical wrongs that have come before. But it may at least win some supporters back to the national team fold.

He laid the paper down on his desk and sniffed. Par for the course. Truth be told, there was not a lot that the Sargossan state media could do that would surprise him anymore, although he reached for his red pen and circled the bit about Lesser Valhalla anyway;

Nicola - revisit the history books. If this is how Sargossa wants to remember it we need to decide how we remember it. For immediate action.

It was bad enough that those noisy neighbours refused to join the Federation proper, he was damned if he was going to let them pick up on any sort of hint that there might have be any sort of historical precedent for an alternative.

'Fallenmarka', indeed. The name was barely ever mentioned in the Valhallan textbooks. The Sargossan colonies were nothing but a footnote in the history of the place, so if any troublemakers living there now were going to start claiming any heritage or diaspora rights, they were about to feel the full power of the Party. 'Kűlmsaar and Terra Escocia' the Sargossan might actually had had a point with, but 'Conscillo'? 'San Karbino'?! Do me a favour.

Nonetheless, he had to concede they knew what they were doing. He twitched his nose and reached for the red pen again;

Make sure we keep up with this kind of thing - build up Sibir and Northbrook again if we need to. e.g. Sutherland update?

He begrudgingly had to hand it to them. The Party might have caught up by now, but the Sargossans has been doing this for generations. Nicola was good, though. The best. Her department would sort it out, he had full confidence.

He had to have full confidence, really. Secretary General Orion Lund was getting older, and he was increasingly aware of it. The Continuity planning meetings had been timetables heavily recently, and he found himself unable to keep up with everything with the same amount of detail that he'd been known for in his youth. It was one of the reasons the Party had taken on so quickly. His efficiency in running the movement. Those were hectic days, and he remembered them well and with increasing frequency. Another indicator of his advancing years.

Standing up and going to his window to look out at the streets of Franz Josef City at dawn stretching out beneath him, he thought about the coming match. Sargossa. Of course it had to be Sargossa. That bloody country had dictated the terms of his entire life, so it was only appropriate that they'd be there again, to quite probably end the new rebranded VFA's first participation in a Copa Rushmori for decades. It would remain to be seen how successful that particular experiment would be. He would await the report from Nicola and Petter with interest, and would have to try and isolate and negate the elements that were overly influenced by Sargossa's being there. A quirk of fate that would have to be dealt with.

He wondered if the Sargossans knew how much they had to thank themselves for this new, colder Valhalla. Without their own cold, calculated, totally unnecessary assassination of Governor Rekish back in Agheim all those years ago, none of this would have happened. Only a hotheaded teenager at the time, Lund had had to watch as his mother had disintegrated after her beloved father's murder at the hands of the Sargossan state. Two years later, all he had left was an estranged, abusive father, and a procession of awkward platitudes and expressions of grief from political figures and relatives he barely knew.

What had been a close family unit in the palace at Agheim had been shattered. Annihilated. Thanks to Sargossa.

Thanks to Sargossa, and the weakness of the Polarian federal government at the time. President Iversen-Eklund and her cavalcade of insipid ministers. None of it would have happened if it wasn't for them. Even now, the thought of their flabby, apologetic faces on the television made him screw up in anger, and he would have spit on the carpet if he'd had the saliva to spare.

What more motivation did a politically connected, angry young man need?

Never again would a foreign government cause such havoc to the people of the Federation. True Valhallans didn't deserve to live like that. In fear. He had promised them an end to all that, and the people had seized it. Eventually.

Without Sargossa, there would have been no Återigen. And without Återigen there would have been no Åskskur. People had even dropped the name Åskskur in recent years, simply referring to the regime as the Party. He missed the ubiquity of the symbol, if he was honest, with it's 'Å + °' combination that deliberately subverted the old anarchy symbol... but he did admire the brevity of the Party. He wondered if he could get them to start capitalising the 'The', as well.

The irony of it all - that Sargossa themselves provided the perfect model for this method of isolating the problem - wasn't lost on him, but anyone pointing that out would end up keeping that realisation to themselves next time. Outwardly, Sargossa needed to remain a menace, rather than an inspiration.

For now, though, politics could wait. The next battlefield in the relationship between Valhalla and Sargossa would be a small, green, grassed one. It would likely not go well, and so the right message would have to be drafted.

Scowling, Lund walked back to his desk and scribbled out the red pen from earlier. Scratch that. It looked like Nicola would have to be coming in for a meeting anyway. Possibly with Commander Knudsen, "the Kmander", too. He picked up his phone to speak to his advisors' secretary directly.

Looked like politics wouldn't wait after all...

New Gelderland pinch point in injury time as Snow Wolves lose second captain to injury

To lose one captain to injury may be seen as unfortunate; to lose two still isn’t worth ripping off a cringeworthy pseud who was basically a 19th century Stephen Fry. AFC Treason striker Röskvi Tyrfingsson will lead the Snow Wolves for the first time at the Copa Rushmori after being elected skipper by his teammates; this following a tournament-ending hamstring injury to center back Eyvar Mathiasson, himself stand-in captain for Sara Kristoffersdóttir. The permanent Snow Wolves captain faces a “questionable” return for the playoffs as she fights to overcome a back injury picked up during Græntfjall’s 7–0 win over Rea San Vegas, while Mathiasson limped off at half-time in the most recent clash and failed to return after the interval. After the match he was diagnosed with a serious hamstring strain that means he will play no further part in the tournament. Adding to the worries, the Snow Wolves dropped two crucial points in a game they should have won.

The final score of 2–2 did not quite reflect an encounter in which Græntfjall dominated possession throughout. The Snow Wolves should certainly have scored more, with Tyrfingsson and Rebekka Kajsdóttir both missing straightforward chances from close range. At the other end, Allyson McKenna stole the draw in injury time after a needless corner conceded by Hermione Hui and poorly defended by Anarr Ebergsson, Mathiasson’s replacement. “New Gelderland played well but it was a frustrating draw to give up,” admitted manager Thor after the game. “The win was there for the taking.” However he admitted that, because this Copa Rushmori is using head-to-head seeding, the result had “basically no impact” on the final day’s match-up with Naixi, which will be winner-takes-all in terms of a preferential seed for the Round of 16.

The match made for grim viewing for Ralf Álfarsson, namesake of the Copa Rushmori qualifying group, who had been invited along as a VIP guest. The 6’8” defender remains the tallest man to have played international football for Græntfjall, and formed an integral defender for the Snow Wolves’ early years, winning the Baptism of Fire alongside Vilbjörn Hjörleifursson, whose son Asbjørn Vilbjörnsson now leads the Snow Wolves’ defensive line. Álfarsson is also famous in football fan folklore for a moment when he was slide-tackled by a 5’3” teenager who afterwards, instead of helping him up, invited him to “suck her balls”; said player was Sara K, now captain of the national team. Chuckling at the memory, the Folte legend said he was “long past” any animosity over the incident and “wished [Sara K] the best” in her recovery. “I don’t think the team dropped points because she was missing, the young girl [Varða Vígsteinsdóttir] played very well,” he said. “It was just one of those days when they didn’t take all the chances, the opposition did, and that’s how it goes”.

One good bit of news for the Snow Wolves is the return of midfielder Danny Oddkellsson, who overcame a stomach virus and will be fit for the final matchday. He is expected to return instead of Kajsdóttir, while Ebergsson will start for Mathiasson, and Vígsteinsdóttir for Kristoffersdóttir. For Tyrfingsson, the honor of wearing the armband is bittersweet. “A year ago it seemed like maybe I’d lost my chance at starting and tomorrow I’m going to be pulling on the captain’s armband,” he said. “It means a lot to me that my teammates voted for me. That said, I’d far rather see it back around Sara’s arm, so I certainly hope she will be fit for the Round of 16.” Tyrfingsson has scored 4 goals in 3 matches this Copa Rushmori, putting to bed complaints that, while a strong player, he didn’t score frequently enough in blue-and-white; he also joked that he was “not at all concerned” that all 4 of his goals to date have been headers. “I’ll kick one in eventually but for now who cares so long as they keep going in.”

Also scoring against New Gelderland was Amandara Navinsdóttir Thakur, in her first goal in a full international. The precociously talented Atletik Tessia striker has lit up Mytanija’s Top League for the last two seasons while flying under the radar of international selection. The softly spoken Thakur, who is already a double world champion at U-18 and U-21 levels, said she was not concerned at being overlooked. “That’s in the past: now I’m here and I have my chance to show what I’m capable of.” Her well taken goal saw her juke past Zorina Engstrom and score a low, hard shot past Charlotte Birdwhistle. “It was a good goal and it’ll always be a little slice of personal history for me, but it would have been much better had it been the winner!”

Also cheering Græntfjall will be the location of the final matchday, which sees them travel to Inhalo, having previously played in Bujukamba. While Bujukamba was a pro-Nafuna stronghold during the Kitaran Civil War and the local Kitarans, who jeered the Snow Wolves in their games and lit red flares, clearly retain some antipathy from Græntfjall’s strongly anti-KPWC stance, in Inhalo a milder reception can be expected. While Græntfjall never supported the KFF during the war, they took a more conciliatory line during the Varakoulas Accord negotiations and supported the decision to award Malik Akongo permanent asylum in the United Republics. Fewer jeers from Kitaran neutrals are therefore to be expected at the all new Inhalo City Arena – though, if the team does not turn in an improved performance on their lacklustre display against New Gelderland, they may pipe up from the visiting fans’ section.

The Visitor's Guide to San Isidro Labrador
(Selected excerpts)

Valleverde

The capital of San Isidro Labrador, is Valleverde (Green Valley), located in the heart of the nation, the inland plains. One out of every eight San Isidranos/Labradorenses, 455,000 people, live in the capital. They are drawn there for the same reasons everyone is drawn to a capital: political power, economic capital, the promise of jobs when your small town seems to have run out, such art and culture and education as is accessible to those of a more liberal bent. The National University, which educates the elite and those lucky and intelligent who gain places from the middle or lower classes, is located in the capital. The capital provides the best education to upper-class and aspirational midde-class students, in the form of "international schools", private Catholic academies, and the crown jewel of pre-university education, the Instituto Superior de Eruditos y Cientificos (Superior Institute of Scholars and Scientists, ISEC). The ISEC is intended to draw in the best students from across San Isidro Labrador for high-quality, fee-free instruction, but in practice, the entrance exams and other barriers mean that students are drawn mainly from the elites.

The establishment of Valleverde as the capital didn't actually occur until after independence; during San Isidro Labrador's time as a Spanish colony, the official capital was San Erasmo, the western port by which most traffic from Spain arrived. Almost since the founding of the colony, there was conflict between the large landowners in the interior of the island and the government authorities in San Erasmo. With sporadic support from the metropole, the government authorities were only rarely able to challenge the powerbrokers in the interior, and so the settlement of Valleverde became the de facto capital, especially during the reign of José María Toledano. There is some documentation of a Parliament of large landowners that assembled in Valleverde and proclaimed opposition to Toledano, but what records exist indicate only a few sporadic meetings between 1744-1759 and these only for a few days each. Nevertheless, the existence of Valleverde as a centre of political power and as a great clearinghouse for all the crops grown in the interior made it an important city and eventually the capital after independence.

The capital, in the question of culture, would likely be considered a backwater by many Rushmori nations. As the centre of conservatism on the island, what cultural wealth it has can mostly be measured in the ornate churches and the Cathedral of Saint Isidore the Farm Laborer, as well as the splendid Spanish Colonial-style mansions of the elite. There is an opera house and an art museum, but it is mostly limited to traditional favorites and has weak appeal to anyone outside of the traditional elites. In the more working-class neighborhoods of the capital, one can find traditional guitar-playing balladeers and percussion-focused folk dancing, as well as evolving forms of music comparable to reggaetón and bachata. There is a growing underground punk scene focused on the LGBTQ community and resistance to the regime. In the upper-income areas, electronic and foreign pop music is more popular.

Language in SIL

San Isidro Labrador has many languages. The principal language, and indeed, the official language is San Isidrano or Labradorense Spanish. Being a Spanish colony for centuries, almost everyone in the country speaks this Spanish to at least a moderate level of proficiency. It is at once a reminder of the past, as San Isidro Labrador's status as an isolated backwater colony and its end to colonization in the 1920s meant that the features of Castilian Spanish it retained are somewhat antiquated. However, the language has evolved to reflect the diversity of other languages on the island and the unique circumstances of the nation, coming up with their own words.

As for other languages, waves of Catalan migration in the 19th and early 20th centuries mean that something like 1 in 12 San Isidrans have acquired at least a basic proficiency in Catalan. Mixed marriages and the prominence of Catalans and people of Catalan heritage in the business community have spread the language beyond the official census numbers of the approximately 2% of San Isidrans who are identified as ethnically Catalan.

Also contributing are the descendants of the nation of Donnacona, also known as Mariannoise. Their Donnaconan French was here before the arrival of the Spanish colonists and has persisted, albeit in a limited geographical area, for nearly 500 years. French-speakers are concentrated mainly in the northern mountain ranges, though there is a significant middle to upper-middle class migration to Valleverde. Despite their small geographical range and the observation that Catalan and San Isidrano Spanish are much more intelligible, the Mariannoise population have a reputation as excellent language speakers. Many Mariannoise, especially younger ones, are trilingual, speaking French, Catalan, and Spanish. The second language comes from having Catalan neighbors in those northern areas, and of course, all students are required to have some proficiency in Spanish. As a result, tourists often seek out Mariannoise guides for their ability to move seamlessly between communities.

A very few San Isidranos also speak languages derived from the indigenous Wigu people, the original inhabitants of the island. These speakers are mostly concentrated in a few rural communities and are older compared to the rest of the population. There have been efforts by anthropologists and linguists to preserve the language, but almost nobody thinks these languages can be restored to even 1% of the population.

Finally, there is some Terranean spoken in San Isidro Labrador, a result of globalization, tourism, and some in-migration of wealthy Terranean-speaking Rushmoris looking for a cheap retirement in a beachside town. Successive presidents have attempted to limit the spread of Terranean by promoting Spanish and other languages and throwing up barriers to trade and tourism. No president can afford to do this permanently, as trade and tourism form important parts of the San Isidro Labrador economy. Terranean-speaking football leagues such as Eura and Nephara are popular, as are Terranean television shows. There has been some effort at dubbing and broadcasting these games in Spanish to blunt the effect of Terranean, but the overall proportion of basic proficiency in Terranean has grown from 3% to 12% in the last 10 years, and has reached 28% among under-30s.

Education in San Isidro Labrador is conducted entirely in Spanish in most areas of the nation. In French or Catalan-speaking areas, public primary schools are about half and half, but there are private schools that teach entirely in French or Catalan. Once students advance past the first six years of schooling, French or Catalan are relegated to language classes rather than used for core subjects. In the few schools that offer Terranean as a language study option, uptake is strong, but otherwise French and Catalan are the two most popular language study options. There are informal, civil society-based efforts to teach people Wigu languages, but these have limited reach. There are also "international schools" for children of diplomats or the elites that offer instruction mostly in Terranean; these have limited impact on the overall proportion of Terranean speakers, but are an important prestige factor in the growth of the language.

The Countryside

The Regions

There are three regions of San Isidro Labrador: the coastal ring, the inland plains, and the mountains.

The coastal ring encompasses the outer region of the nation, the coastal area that surrounds all other territory of San Isidro Labrador. This is the land of white sandy beaches, clear blue waters, swaying palm trees, and succulent seafood. It's also the land of poor fishermen trying to eke out an existence while being squeezed by seafood processing companies, service workers desperate to cater to foreign tourists who are drawn by the favorable exchange rate, and environmental NGOs and government workers trying to clean up said beaches to either protect the natural environment or protect the tourism industry, as the case may be.

Small fishing villages make up most of the rural areas in the coastal ring, but there are also small farming villages set back a bit from the sea. Fish, lobsters, shrimp, bananas, and other agricultural products are the main foci of economic activity here. Regardless, most rural areas in the coastal ring are fairly poor, though some fishing families have combined their efforts across generations to increase their productivity and there are more prosperous peasants who own enough land to have more than just self-sufficiency in mind. One troubling issue has been the rise in bankruptcy among fishermen and their conversion into captains or laborers aboard fishing vessels, working for large companies. They find their freedom severely limited and their economic circumstances marginally, if at all, improved. Contributing to the hardship in the rural coastal ring is the very real sense among many that the government has abandoned them. They believe that bigger cities and the other regions of San Isidro Labrador take precedence in the government's plans. If some opposition party could harness their anger, it might make a difference, but as is, most express their disapproval by staying home and not voting.

The inland plains, according to the government and the people who live there, are the heart of the nation, much to the disagreement of those who live on the periphery of the nation. In colonial times, this was a land of great haciendas, of semi-feudal lords ruling over the Spanish peasants who came here hoping to find something other than what they found. It was also a land of missionaries, of Church officials converting the Wigu-speaking indigenous peoples and founding their missions. In some ways, the inland plains have not changed; it is still an agricultural land where one finds more jornaleros (day laborers) than small landowners and where the vestiges of indigenous culture may still be seen. In others, it has seen great change; the capital of the nation, Valleverde, is here, and it is the seat of political power, of economic power in the form of industry and banking, and the population has grown, a landscape dotted by small towns that radiate outward from the capital.

In the rural areas of the inland plains, the powerbrokers (large landowners) wield incredible authority and the peasants, poor though they be, believe strongly in their nation and in the established order of things. The principal crops of the inland plains are sugar and tobacco, though rice and to a much smaller extent wheat are the staple crops that provide sustenance to the people. Here, you are more apt to find small towns with shops and services than in the fishing and farming villages of the coastal ring. A small lower-middle class of artisans, shopkeepers, and blue-collar work such as long-haul trucking exists here, and the wage work of being a jornalero is somewhat more secure than the poverty of the coastal ring. Still, you are much more likely to find sprawling estates and huge mansions surrounding the small towns rather than a self-sufficient community where small plots dominate. Church attendance is universal, and many of the priests in the region are under the thumb of the landowners. The ethos of the large landowner is freedom for them, but obedience for the peasants. This holds whether they are cash croppers, grain growers, or ranchers; their workforce might vary somewhat in its roles and skills, but the relationship is the same. The landowners use their power over the peasants to extract votes for the National-Progressive Union, the government party. Some peasants have recently formed the Jornalero Alliance, a syncretic party that combines left-wing economics with traditional social values and speaks specifically to the interests of the rural poor of the inland plains. It remains small, however, both because many fear to challenge the landowners, and also because the security agents of the state and private gangs spy on the party or employ selective violence to dampen enthusiasm for the party.
Mountains

The mountainous region, located principally in the northeast of the nation, borders both other regions. It is the land of Donnaconans and their apple trees, of deep Catalans and their traditions, and of those hardy communities of mixed race that fled to the mountains to find some sort of opportunity. The mountains have always been a distinct region and an odd place for those who consider themselves "true" San Isidranos/Labradorenses. Settlers from Donnacona were the first non-Wigu people to settle the island and encountered the Spanish settlers as they gradually moved across San Isidro Labrador. Later, when Spain abolished slavery in 1811, newly freed people of color settled across the island. But they found it difficult to get ahead in a society that still judged them by the color of their skin. They found the mountains a welcome refuge from the persecution they and their mixed-race families faced in San Isidrano society. Finally, a wave of Catalan immigration swept in. Finding themselves in danger of losing their distinct identity, some Catalans moved to the more isolated mountains, where they would not be under the hegemonic cultural thumb of San Isidrano Spanish.

Culturally and linguistically, the mountains are diverse. They are a mix of Donnaconan, Catalan, San Isidrano Spanish, and some indigenous Wigu language and culture. Spanish continues to be the lingua franca, but it is far from uncommon to hear conversations conducted entirely in Donnaconan or Catalan. Here, amid the heights of the mountains, is the one place where the Donnaconans' beloved apples are able to grow, and they are considered a delicacy by the rest of the island and indeed in some parts of Rushmore. A popular folk song in San Isidrano Labrador is "La Manzanera" (The Apple-Woman), which tells of a Donnaconan woman and apple seller who has a whirlwind romance with the singer before leaving once again. "La Manzanera" is quite popular at all sporting events. Other than apples, the mountains are home to potato farms, weaving, sheepherding, and some limited mining and steelworking.

Here, despite the relatively sparse population, education is considered to be better than any other region except the capital. In the coastal ring, disaffection, the lure of baseball as an alternative career, and government disinvestment mean education is weak, and in the inland plains, the large landowners more or less make sure the rural poor only get enough schooling to be decent workers. The Catalans and Mariannoise value education, and after being denied help in other areas, mixed-race communities vowed that they would teach their children well. Local budgets value education as the highest good and communities band together to ensure that children will be able to have an education and not have to travel down the mountains for it as well. Their ability to provide education is strengthened because the local Catalan and French-speaking parties provide support to the regime and so receive extra funding.

Visit Schutzenphalia and West Ruhntuhnkuhnland!

"When one is tired of Uberwienerschnitzelstadt, one is tired of life. Or possibly of sausages." Set amid the foothills of the majestic Schutzenphalian Alps and abreast the mighty Ruhntuhnkuhn river, Schutzenphalia's capital city mixes olde worlde charme with clean, vibrant modern infrastructure. You can use rail, tram, and bus to venture from the medieval walls to the towering central Cathedral, or just have a leisurely stroll down wide, linden-lined avenues, watch as the ceremonial Horse Guards troop their colours or visit the Observatoriumlookingglassschaftplatz to learn about the high-tech satellites being put into orbit by Schutzenphalian astrophysicists. Buildings like the Jakob-Boltzmanns-Universität-Uberwienerschnitzelstadts, St. Margerethe's cathedral, and the bourse all date from the Schutzenphalian High Middle Ages yet all are busily in use today as students, worshippers, and stock traders from around the world jostle to alight at the next hydrogen-fueled bus stop. Enjoy a savoury schweinefleischrindfleischlammflesichhühnerfleischschuppentierfleischwurst, washed down with one of Schutzenphalia's many famous wheat beers, or indulge in some traditional Kaffee and Kuchen while watching freight barges, cruise liners, and prison hulks navigate the Ruhntuhnkuhn.

The Schutzenphalian language can be intimidating, but most Schutzenphalian tour guides, hotel proprietors and customer service reps speak excellent Common. If you're stuck, try concatenating a string of guttural sounds, and you'll probably end up saying "hairdryer" in perfect Schutzenphalian! Out in the country you may encounter more dialects than in the cities, with farmers and serfs speaking something rather different from the High Schutzenphalian of schoolbooks. Venture into West Ruhntuhnkuhnland and you'll meet native speakers of the Ruhntuhnkuhnlander language. (Please be sure to report them to the proper authorities, as speaking Ruhntuhnkuhnlander is strictly banned as part of the ongoing Schutzenphalianization program.) Schutzenphalian can be a beautiful language, with poems to the alpine scenery, hymns of Catholic worship, and pleas for relief from the harsh lash of noble overseers. (Again, please report these last ones so that troublemakers can be identified and dealt with.)

Unfortunately, bringing your pets may not be an option. Schutzenphalia and West Ruhntuhnkuhnland's outstanding natural beauty requires the maintenance of strict biosecurity laws to prevent the importation of any invasive species, such as vermin, weeds, or communists. Additionally, the ferocious savagery of the national animal, the gold throated blood sucking wood hamster, means the safety of even large pet dogs cannot be guaranteed. That said, Schutzenphalians love animals, and you will see many dog walkers in the towns and cities. In the farms a less sentimental attitude prevails, but those who enjoy a hearty Schutzenphalian breakfast will enjoy being able to spend some quality time with piglets, lambs, and veal calves, shortly before they are served up to you.

The rural areas of Schutzenphalia and West Ruhntuhnkuhnland offer a chance to get away from the bustle of cities. In the expansive fields bursting with golden wheat, oats, rye, and barley, you won't hear a single car's engine murmur, just the tweeting of birdsong and the occasional crack of feudal overseers' whips. Much dense woodland remains unspoiled thanks to the country's environmental's laws as well as strict anti-poaching enforcement by noble landowners. Those wishing to hunt pheasant will need to obtain not just a licence but also permission from the landowner. A more tolerant attitude is exercised towards the hunting of peasants, however.

Living on the margins- 4 one goal wins have Nyowani Kitara sitting pretty, ahead of the CR Knockout Stages

3-2. 2-1. 2-1. 6-5. Those are the scores of Nyowani Kitara's four group stage games here at the Copa Rushmori- all of them victories. We've had good and bad moments within all of them- some matches, we looked more impressive than others. The glories of a late winner, withstanding a late onslaught, just the back & forth craziness of our 6-5 victory over Marianne on Matchday 4, etc... yet, this is easily our best ever showing at the Copa Rushmori- and the knockout stages haven't even started. Winning all of these close games, of course, is not necessarily the most sustainable course of action going forward for this squad. But it is a reasonable one- we've won a bunch of games, took max points, and are in good position for a run on home soil.

How sustainable is this course of action that we've taken, however- how sustainable is this path to winning? Liang Wei said that at a major international tournament, it wasn't like a league- you took the wins in whatever way they come, and then prepare for what's next, later on. "Obviously, we aren't going to win very many games where we concede 5 goals- that's something, in the back, that we're absolutely going to need to clean up." He told reporters. "But the way we clawed back, the way we fought- that's something that we can continue to take with us going forward." NYK played with a heavily rotated squad against Marianne, mostly because they had already punched their ticket to the knockout stages before the game began. "Hilmar Petersson played extremely well- a major tournament, at age 19, that's certainly not expected."

The captain, Odede Angonga, said that these results showed that Nyowani Kitara needed to bring more intensity to their knockout stage matches. "To win in the knockouts of a major tournament, indeed, is a challenge- look at what we've done." He told reporters. "We've never done it here at the CR. Hell, as a country, we've only done it at one tournament ever- World Cup 92. We can get away with being brilliant in moments. But in the late stages of tournaments, you've got to be able to control a game. Teams are too good, too deep, to simply concede a few magical moments. Any team that scores 5 times against us in the knockouts will probably pummel us. It's the nature of the beast. I know Okombo is gone, but we've still got to tidy things up in the back."

On Matchday 5, with the group already clinched and 12 points secured, the team will simply have their off-days. Many will travel to visit family- the coaching staff, of course, will be scattered all over the country, watching various games to try and get a sense of who they will be playing in the next round. The tournament, in general, has gone off without a hitch in Nyowani Kitara- while fans have certainly voiced their opinions at nations like Nephara or Græntfjall, nations have generally had a pleasant experience. President Muhoozi Kulan told reporters that "there is plenty to go in the tournament, but Rushmore coming here is a success. We're celebrating being in the CRC, the re-building of Nyowani Kitara, and this tournament going off well will showcase how exactly we are recovering."

Fifth Cutoff of the Copa Rushmori

It's the Final MD of the group stages! 24 teams will be eliminated from this tournament at this juncture- only 16 shall remain. Will you stay or will you go from this tournament?

MD5 RP Prompt: 16 teams are left in the tournament. IT's an exciting time- all of you have achieved something, and there are hopes that your team is the one good enough to win it all this time around. Tell me about hope in your country- both inside & outside of football. Is there a ton of hope and optimism around the NT? What are people hopeful for in general in your nation? Hopeful about the general direction of your country? Hopeful for their personal lives- economically? Hopeful that their kids will have it better than they did? Hopeful about personal things- getting married, buying a house, etc... Anything that your citizens are hopeful for/optimistic about, let us know!

As a disclaimer, there is no rule that you must follow RP prompts. You can diverge from or completely ignore the prompt. There is no bonus for responding to the RP prompt, nor is there a penalty for ignoring the RP prompt.

Since the knockout stages are arriving as well, this will be the final RP prompt of the tournament. Thank you all for your answers- it's made for some fascinating reading!

Matchday 5 Scores

Reminder that you must finish top two in your group to advance to the knockout stages.

The young woman at the reception area was baffled. Ohimi had just flashed a detective badge in her face and demanded to see the renter of one of the retail units in this downtown skyscraper, while Kosirothi moaned and screeched alarmingly beside her. Was it the clearly desperate glint in my eye? Maybe I should have left Kosi in the car, wondered Ohimi as the poor girl tried to formulate a response.

"I'm sorry," the receptionist said quickly, glancing back and forth between Detective Ohimi, the sobbing old street peddler, and the waiting area behind them. Through the wide windows of the waiting area, an incredible panorama of downtown Qiawutian. If you looked closely enough, you could see the lime green warehouse where they had just met with the unfairly-maligned Red Lodge. "Is she all right?" asked the receptionist, pointing at Kosi.

"Yes, she's fine. She's just... had a bad day. I've put her through a lot."

"Right. So, you wanted to see..."

"The tenant in that unit right back there. The owner of that business." Ohimi was pointing at an office complex through a pair of wide windows to her left, the receptionist's right. On one of the windows, words were printed. "NINGMENG YINQING," it read in simple, bold black lettering.

"Okay." The receptionist fiddled with some papers on her desk nervously. "Now, I understand you're the police, but... this is a commercial office building. We rent out to businesses and firms. Some of our tenants are very affluent... the units are top-tier luxury suites with every amenity on offer, and so the rent is quite high, you see. This unit here... the business that rents this unit here... the owner of that business is very wealthy. And he's abroad right now, I'm afraid."

"I know who he is. Jen Ta Jin. The footballer."

"Yes. These are the offices for his fashion label," said the receptionist. "He started the label just this past year. Mr. Jin didn't even have a year's salary in his pocket when he began the business. It's already grown so much in such a short period of time. He designs everything, from streetwear to high fashion. His work is attracting critical attention from abroad, you see."

Ohimi rolled her eyes. Naixese pizza attracted attention from abroad, too... but not because it was good. "Look, I just want to talk to him and, if possible, check out his business contacts and his pitch deck."

"Right, well, I don't have access to either of those, and even if I did, I'm sure I wouldn't be at liberty to disclose anything to you, even if you are a policewoman."

"Look, miss," Ohimi leaned over the desk and lowered her voice ominously. "Men with guns have come here before, haven't they? They have come here and demanded to speak to Jen Ta before, haven't they? Would you like them to come back? Would you like them to wave firearms and swords in your face? Let's just skip all the unpleasantness and you can just pretend I'm one of them. I need to speak to Jen Ta Jin."

The woman did seem very frightened, partly because of Ohimi's saber-rattling and partly because Kosi had sunk to her knees on the carpeted office floor and was nearly screaming. Tears were streaming down her face. She was not well.

"I... I can't simply call him in! I already told you, he's abroad!"

"Well, tell him to come back from abroad."

The receptionist looked at her like she was crazy. "He's in Nyowani Kitara! He's with the national football team! At the Copa Rushmori!"

"Oh. I don't follow football."

The girl behind the desk was staring with deep befuddlement. "Obviously not. Look," she said, clearly attempting to be helpful, "I can call him if you like? The time zone difference is insignificant, so he should be awake. It's just a question of whether the team is in training at the moment or not. Shall I call?"

"Please," Detective Ohimi said gratefully as she knelt to momentarily console Kosirothi. "Kosi, I'm sorry about all this. I'm sorry. Please just calm down. We'll go back to the clinic after this and they can help you. I shouldn't have dragged you all over town like I did. I'm sorry."

The receptionist spoke, but not to Ohimi, who was just standing up as she heard the young woman's words. "Mr. Jin? Hello, it's Da Xia at the Discovery Plaza Tower... yes... oh, yes, everything's fine. There's a policewoman here... no, not... no, this policewoman's name is... she's a Roki, let me check with her."

"Can I just talk to him?"

"She wants to speak to you, is that all right? Okay... okay, sure. Here," she said, and held out the cordless telephone for Ohimi to hungrily grab.

"Hello, Jen Ta?"

"Yo, who's this?" His voice was faint, sharp crackling sounds could be heard, and there was a bit of a delay on his end of the line.

"My name is Folomiyi Ohimi, I'm a detective in the 1st Precinct. I am investigating the murder of a fellow officer. I must clarify: you are not a suspect. I have no evidence incriminating you in the incident whatsoever. I believe you may be able to assist me in the investigation, however."

He was very quiet, and it was not merely because of the delay on the line. "Uh, okay."

"You know who I'm calling about, don't you?"

He said nothing. The receptionist was eyeing her closely. Kosi made agonized sniffling sounds from the floor.

"The Black Lodge. They may have been involved in the murder of my colleague - there is ample evidence to suggest it. Testimony has emerged that suggests you may be caught in a coercive relationship with them. I would like you to tell me everything you know, if anything."

He remained as quiet as the calm sea for a brief moment. Finally: "I can't speak to you right now, I'm sorry. I'm supposed to show up and training in a few minutes, and the manager already doesn't like me." He began to say goodbye. "I've got to g-"

"Wait!" Ohimi cried into the phone. "Please listen to me. This could make or break the investigation into this detective's death. I cannot tell you how important this is. I need you to help me, Jen Ta. Would you... would you at least let me search the office of your fashion label? I do not have a warrant. You are not obligated to help, but... it could offer something. Even a tiny clue that gives me something. I will leave everything as is, untouched. I won't even ask you to be a witness in a potential future trial."

He waited for a moment before answering. "Uh... okay. Yeah. Sure. I'll, uh... I'll instruct the receptionist to unlock the office."

Ohimi handed the phone back to the receptionist, who seemed to furrow her brow as Jen Ta spoke to her. "You want me to open it for her? Are you sure? You don't have to, Mr. Jin. You... yeah. Yeah, okay." She hung up the phone, eyes wide. "Well," she said slowly, "you've got permission to search the offices of Ningmeng Yinqing. I'm to unlock the door for you."

A half an hour later, Ohimi was growing impatient. The search should not have taken as long as had. The office of Jin's fashion label were mostly taken up by clothing racks of experimental pieces Jin had been evidently working on, with just a small desk area for business. A desktop computer, a filing cabinet, and a few organized piles of paper were all Ohimi had had to dig through. But Kosi had been apoplectic the entire time, crying and screaming like a child having a tantrum. Ohimi had found nothing of value, and was about to give up and drive Kosi to the emergency room when she thought to yank open the drawers underneath a countertop reserved for cutting and sewing fabric. There, at the back of the drawer, a small notebook.

In it, she found what she needed, and then some. It was a personal diary, and while it felt a bit invasive and uncomfortable Jin's entries began about ten weeks before the beginning of the 80th Baptism of Fire, held 18 months prior in the Anaian nation of Mertagne. The first entry read:

Managed to get a loan for the label today. It sure was tough. They wanted proof of income, but I haven't gotten my first paycheck from the FA yet for national team duty and I don't want to assume I'll have a club contract until after the BoF is over. This has been my dream for the past 4 years. If football can make this happen for me, then great, but... I just want it to happen, whatever it takes.

A month later, another entry:

I don't even have the label off the ground yet and already I've got people trying to shake me down. A big gang of assholes in suits turned up at the office today and said I needed to start paying protection money if I knew what was good for me. I asked who they were, and they said it didn't matter to them what I called them. I said I was just gonna call them "the shitheads." The one guy said I'd be sorry for saying that.

Three days later, the last entry that Ohimi read:

Today a bunch of guys in suits and sunglasses dragged me off the street while I was out buying stuff I'll need for the Baptism. They threw me in the back seat of a car and drove me halfway across town. When they opened the door of the car, I tried to run away, but one of the assholes tripped me and dragged my by my foot into some horrible industrial building by the river in the Seaport District. I didn't see the exact address number for the building, but it was like an abandoned fish cannery on Warlord Street. They just dragged me in there, and ripped up my clothes. They said they weren't going to beat the shit out of me because they "didn't want anyone to ask questions," but the main guy took me into this huge room where they'd repurposed a fish tank. They had a fucking shark in there. They dragged me up to the edge of the tank and shoved my face up against the glass. The thing was huge. Teeth longer than my fucking fingers. Scared the shit out of me. They said I was going to start paying protection money to them or I was getting thrown in the shark tank. They said they were "the Black Lodge," and I was only getting one more chance.

Ohimi grabbed the diary in one hand and Kosi's wrist in the other. She stood up to leave.

And then a gunshot rang out from the lobby. Ohimi and Kosi stood there, startled. Something had happened. It could have been nothing other than a gunshot - it was much too loud to have been a burst pipe or something. It was dead quiet, which could only mean someone had just shot the receptionist. They stood there, horrified, as footsteps approached the office door. Ohimi readied her service pistol. Then the dread portal swung open.

Part 11: The Dandelion Years 2

For a man who had spent his life fighting the dangers of expectations, few things had been as challenging as managing Union expectations come the Dandelions third cycle of international competition.

The devious nature of expectations is that they can never be truly fulfilled, or so he had claimed for large parts of his life. There is a lack at the very core of human Being, he used to say, and that lack is the very essence of you as an individual, but also all of us together as an attempt at society. The lack craves filling, it longs for fulfillment and being a whole, but the tragedy of human existence is that the hole can never be whole. The longing to plug the hole and become whole, is manifested in expectations, as he once put it in his bachelor thesis, and the more you put into the hole, the greater the craving for evermore becomes, because there is a hole in the hole. The only way to live a life relatively free of fundamental despair, was to recognize the reality of expectations and strive to not allow oneself to become its prisoner; live your life with a gentle hope concerning what might be, perhaps, but never, ever, expect anything. You will always be disappointed. It was perhaps not the most eloquent, or logically consistent, of theories, but he had never wavered from it; in his eyes it kept reaffirming itself. Never had that been truer than when he took part in the world of football. It had happened when he guided Finntorp IK to glory in the 1980’s and 90’s, and it was happening now.

They had accomplished something truly magnificent during their second cycle of competing, crowning it all with nothing less than a quarterfinal appearance in the Cup of Harmony. People were overjoyed, of course. And they should be glad their team had performed well, certainly, but when the eternal recurrence started up once again, he wished that people had been able to hold on to that joy they had felt previously, the joy over what their team had once achieved, instead of letting all that fade away with time and instead replace it with new expectations. These ones, of course, even grander. Simply repeating a Herculean feat would not be enough, he feared; the hole had grown.

The Dandelions had never performed well in the Copa Rushmori. He did not believe in talk of a “curse”, but he was nervous as the team travelled down to Mytanija. It felt like they were always drawn with regional giants, destined to struggle. This was somewhat of a fallacy though, because Rushmore was so packed to the brim with “giants” that more or less any version of these draws would land you face to face with opponents that provoked the above kind of sentiment.

This time around they would be playing top-teams like Savojarna and Yuezhou, both ranked in the regional top 10, in addition to the Three Golden Kingdoms and Austroslovakia. Their very first match was against top seeded Yuezhou. The Union fans had travelled down to Mytanija in large numbers, and he was nervous about how they would handle the very real risk of not only an opening defeat, but multiple ones. Violence and football had mostly gone their own separate ways in the Union a long time ago, but he knew what combinations of excessive affect, alcohol and expectations not met could produce. Thankfully he never needed to witness what could’ve been, because his Dandelions played to perfection. They not only emerged victorious against Yuezhou, they went undefeated and won their group. 5 goals produced, 0 conceded. In later years he often pointed towards this Copa group stage when asked how his ideal version of football looked like.

It was an especially impressive performance from the team, because these were turbulent times in Union football. Right at the start of the campaign the news broke that four of the Dandelions had signed for Tikariotian TPL team Fort Viljan Northern FC, making them the first ever Union players to go abroad and play professionally. Rumors spoke of tensions within the team, between those who supported opening up Union football more, and those who passionately opposed such a development. It started a discourse in the Union at large, with proponents of each side mudslinging on the debate sections of the biggest papers, while the team played as the very prime of versions of themselves down south. Something that apparently proved both sides points.

The truth was that it had been a tense time in the backroom, and it was on the verge of escalating. He wasn’t quite sure how he felt about the idea of “opening up”, both about Union players playing abroad and foreign nationals playing in the Allgnejsa. He was a cautious man, and the honest answer was probably that he leaned towards continued isolationism. He never let that show, however, and in the end he was convinced that the reason the team managed to overcome their differences was how tight he had knitted them together over the years.

Their first ever Copa Rushmori Ro16 was to be played against Southwest Eastnorth, a team they knew well from previous World Cup qualifying. The earlier matchups had ended with one draw and one Dandelion win, and the team managed to win their third encounter as well. It took overtime – something that seemed to becoming their hallmark in Ro16-matches – but they won, securing a first ever Copa quarterfinal. Against Nephara. It quickly became clear that previous talk about being up against “giants” was perhaps talking too soon. The Dandelions were taught a lesson in superior footballing skill the day they lost 3–1 to Nephara.

Their achievement was massive. Objectively speaking, that much must’ve been clear to anyone who knew anything about football. That’s what he told himself, and he returned to the Union with a sense of ease. That would pass, however. The team was greeted with much joy by the fans, true. But the tribulations quickly morphed into a prolonged public discussion about how they could’ve done better. He was annoyed, and visibly so. He was usually a calm voice in the public discourse, but after being asked to comment about how they had “failed” in a quarterfinal they “should’ve” won, he snapped and passionately lectured both the commentators in the studio and the viewers. The “disgruntled” voices eventually died down, and the tingling sensation of an approaching World Cup Qualification took its place. He appreciated the shift, but the tendency of ever increasing expectations was clearly still there. Never completely explicit, but it was there.

Despite being extremely demanding in regards to his players health, he had never been a role model in that department. He wasn’t a particularly “healthy eater”, and he often skipped meals all together, especially when he was very caught up with his coaching (which he often was). Ane started getting worried about him after he returned from Mytanija and his heated turns in the public spotlight. He was thin and looked weak. He brushed it off at first, but eventually accepted her point and promised to do better looking after himself, especially on the road. On top of it all, he was an old man, and it was starting to show.

After some time the qualifications for the 93rd World Cup commenced. They were drawn in a group with strong nations like Pemecutan, Kelssek and Sendhang. A few international observers deemed they had a shot of qualifying for a play-off spot, but said it’d be a rough ride getting there. They started off convincingly, winning four straight games before holding Kelssek to a draw. A succession of draws and wins followed, and they remained undefeated until the fifteenth match day, where they fell against Indusse in a tight game. Their second loss came in the seventeenth match against Loyo, but not before they managed to defeat Kelssek. They ended their qualifications strongly, winning away games against both Sendhang and Pemecutan, and at the final whistle they were 13-7-2 and clinched second place in the group, only one point behind Kelssek. They were going to the playoffs for the first time. Their opponents would be a old acquaintance, namely the Dragonflies of Ko-oren.

In all his years coaching the Dandelions, Ko-oren was the team they faced the most times. Six in total, and he never managed to beat them once. The Dandelions performed well, but they came up short in trying to outshine the masters of post-football at their own game. A third consecutive Cup of Harmony invitation awaited them upon their return, however, and they soon travelled to Græntfjall.

The toll of a WCQ is heavy, and he had felt this one all the more. Now a man in his mid-seventies, running around the world was more of an ordeal than it used to be. Both Ane and the kids asked him to step down after they returned from Ko-oren. He refused, and said they were all overreacting. Besides, Græntfjall wasn’t that far away. The team’s performance in their third Cup of Harmony was shaky. They lost their opening game against Atheara, and despite coming away winners against New Gelderland and Srubnaya Culture, they were dependent on not losing against the group’s top seed, Drawkland, to have a chance at reaching the Ro16. He was not feeling well prior to the Drawkland game, but he of course said nothing, remaining on the sidelines in the freezing cold for the full 90 minutes. The 0-0 draw saved the team’s progression, but insisting on coaching had done him no favors. He collapsed in the hotel later that night, and it turned out he had pneumonia. He was treated in a local hospital and subsequently sent home. He did not get to be there for the Dandelion triumph over reigning champions Saint Eleanor, or their quarterfinal defeat against Eura.

With the conclusion of the 85th Cup of Harmony, he had led the Dandelions in 96 international matches. With a win rate of 47 percent, he was integral in building a strong and competitive national side from next to nothing. But it was clear that time had caught up with him, and the coaching life he had been living the last years could not go on indefinitely.

It took time, but he eventually recovered from that nasty spell of pneumonia. The coaching had been left to his junior assistant, Timotej Hansson while he was gone, but everything was very much in the air as to when he’d officially resign, and who would replace him. By the time a new cycle was around the corner, he was feeling better. He hadn’t formally resigned, and insisted on leading the team in the upcoming Copa Rushmori down in Nyowani Kitara. This would be his last outing with the Dandelions.

Big win sends up through,
by Caitlyn Dufresne, Concord Heights Times

Heading into the final game against Ceni within the group stage, things were looking good for Team Cassadaigua that they would be able to advance, but they could not come up empty in this contest. A loss to Ceni, and a probable win for San Isidro Labrador over Aerágny would mean that the pink and black would be watching the knockouts at home as opposed to participating in them. There could be no way that new manager Chen Huikang would allow that to happen, as unlike World Cup qualifying where the team's ranking has slipped to the point where qualifying is not an expectation anymore (sad to say), it is indeed a must in the Copa Rushmori to make it to the knockouts, at a bare minimum. We'll save the argument that a round of sixteen loss would be about as unacceptable if it is something that we need to get involved.

A similar theme that we have seen with the Fillies under Chen is that the team has made an aggressive push right from the opening whistle to pick up the first goal of the match.
This was not as common under Brittany Byers, at all, as her tactics would often lead towards a more conservative opening and looking to strike only when there was a breakdown in the midfield. But right now, that is not the strength of the team, and Chen is well aware of that. You have a talented group of forwards on this team, you need to make use of them, including a hungry Lexi McGregor who is eager to show that her time has now arrived. Shannon Cunningham was coming off a hat trick, and Lacey Sherwood was coming off a big day as well in terms of setting up her teammates. None of these three were starting forwards on the last World Cup, and if they continued to play as well as they have, then they are going to take the starting jobs of Chloe Anderson, Rachel Bolden, and Carly Patterson, not because those players did anything to lose them, but because they, as a younger group, played so well as to not give the new coaching staff any other options. So, what are our fans hopeful about, you may ask? They're hopeful that this team can get back in the World Cup, and don't care who the people are that get them there. They're hopeful that Chen Huikang was the missing link for this team in order to do so.

It took just three minutes for the Fillies to find the back of the net, and it was after a tremendous display of footwork and ball control by Lexi McGregor. It was another example of why she has self-proclaimed herself as the best player in Cassadaigua, even when she was just 16 years of age. Not only would she show that ability to get in position to score, her finish was just as impressive, leaving the keeper from Ceni hopeless that they could prevent the goal. Lexi did do her patented backflip after the goal, the first time we had seen that from her since the Brookstation game. And let's face it, you missed seeing it!

While we have talked alot about McGregor, and those up front, we have not talked enough about Kaitlin Millikan, our own Concord Heights City star, who is also making the most of her opportunity. Maybe that is because we know all about her accolades here in the nation's capital that it feels like we are repeating ourselves when we hype up the 23-year old, but she deserves more credit. You have to backtrack to World Cup 93 qualifying when Millikan was officially labelled as a substitute behind older players on the team, including Morgan Rosenblatt. The 34-year old former captain was slowing down, we could all see it, but she maintained her role on the team as former manager Brittany Byers was hopeful that the midfielder could reach back into her former great moments and lead the team again. That never happened, and the team suffered, and this is the aspect of the team that is most commonly pointed to as the reason for our failure to qualify for the World Cup. Is that completely fair? No. But you know and I know that once fans latch on to a player and decide to make them the scapegoat for their aggravation, there is nothing that said player can do, and any other deficiencies will not be picked on as much. Having said that, there is also justification for that. The team really needed a new star in the midfield, and while we know we have it in the pipeline with the Engle twins and Rachel Wyman, we needed someone who was on the roster that was a little older than them, but still young enough to be a fixture on this team. The best contender for that seemed to be Millikan.

For some reason, Byers was slow to make that change in the starting lineup, and even when she did, she was not fully committed to it. It is important to keep in mind that you can't just insert someone into the same spot as another and expect them to be the same type of player. It is not Kaitlin Millikan's strength to be a goal scorer from the midfield in the way that Morgan Rosenblatt, or the one she essentially replaced, Meghan Wolcott, were. Millikan is much more of a passer than a scorer. Her vision of the field is incredible, but she's not as strong of a finisher. Therefore, you can't just expect her to replace Rosenblatt on the scoresheet. The one that should have been doing that was Kelsey Werth. And let's not just jump on Kelsey. She did fine, but had her own responsibilities.

Millikan would get occasional starts in the second half of qualifying, and actually did very well. In fact, she was clearly better than Rosenblatt, but Byers would simply not make the change. Once sentenced to the Cup of Harmony, the team went with Millikan more, and Kaitlin continued to play well, but still Byers never seemed convinced about her. Under new coach Chen Huikang, Millikan has been able to not try and worry about why she couldn't lock down the starting job, but has seized the opportunity with fantastic play in the Copa Rushmori thus far. This certainly included the game against Ceni, were she was brilliant in the middle third, and getting the ball forward to the attackers up front. That's gone a long way, I believe, to the exceptional play that we are seeing out of the likes of Lexi McGregor and company. When asked about this chance and playing under Chen, Millikan told me that, "It's an opportunity, I know. My confidence is there, I have worked very hard to get here, but am happy to get a chance to be a featured player on a team. I know Lexi and Lacey think the same way, Shannon too, and I think it is is showing thus far on the field. We're a very close bunch, and the future is very bright here." Kaitlin joked that she will be hoping for a lower kit number, "37 is not a number I have dreamed of. Unless it carries meaning for you, you really like to have a lower number, so maybe we can get that worked out, but obviously that's not a big deal." Lexi McGregor also spoke well of her teammate, "Kaitlin, yeah, glad she gets a chance. She's pretty cool, really. I think she's like one of those people that you would call the glue and stuff like that, ya know. I hope she can start in the next World Cup. I like Lauren and Chrissy (Engle). They're fun, but I think, ya know, like, Kaitlin is that veteran who has been there and I am excited about working with her." Lexi would also say, "You can't just hang on to older players because they are older and have done things in the past. Chen knows that. He kicks ass, quite frankly."

Back to the game, after the third minute goal by McGregor, Cassadaigua got goals by Shannon Cunningham in the 33rd and Lacey Sherwood in the second minute of injury time for the first half. Millikan played a big role with a great pass to set up that Sherwood goal. Ceni cut the lead to 3-1 in the 51st, but the Fillies got a quick response in the 55th on Lexi McGregor's second of the game. Lexi did not do one of her backflips after that goal. When asked why not afterwards, she told us that, "I mean, ya know, I think they're suitable after a bigger or more meaningful goal." That, by the way, is another example of Lexi's maturity as a player maybe beginning to grow a little bit. In the 73rd, Allyson Perry, who came on just four minutes prior, scored the final goal of the match.

The group stage finishes with Cassadaigua scoring seventeen goals, which ties Graintfjall as the most goals scored by anyone in the tournament, so safe to say that Chen Huikang's offensive tactics are working. The +11 goal differential also tied Graintfjall for the highest in the group stage. However, since the Fillies had a draw (Graintfjall did too), they are only the 5th seed in the tournament. Graintfjall "won" the coin flip to get the #4 seed, but in reality, the Fillies probably won that coin flip, as they play Southwest Eastnorth instead of Mytanija. Obviously, the pink and black still need to take care of business, but a juicy quarterfinal match could be looming there. That's enough looking ahead.

We'll see you in Dewayo!

__REPÚBLICA GUANACASTECA__

Fifth Copa Rushmori, debuted in CR39

What is Guanacasteca's best ever result in the Copa Rushmori? You're looking at it. The Pigs had never finished higher than fourth in any of their four previous Copa groups. But with a draw against Gatchingerrak Union, by defeating Ketiou, and then drawing against Yuezhou, they kept Yuezhou from advancing and moved on to the Round of 16 themselves.

Both Oberour Ar Moro and Guanacasteca have to be feeling exhilarated. They've gone well beyond whatever they expected to get out of this tournament, so it's all gravy at this point right?

What are they hoping for: The Pigs are going to look across the pitch at the Dragoons and think to themselves: "Why not? Why not continue this run?"

A History of License Plates in the Dominion: Part Five

Image

License plates are for vehicles, but we have only discussed them in terms of the average citizen. Automobiles owned by Oberour Ar Moro need to be registered as well. On the streets and government properties of the Dominion, you can see special plates with the designation "Réservé à l'Organisation": Official use only.

Thousands and thousands of vehicles are owned by Oberour Ar Moro, all of which must be registered. Each ministry owns many vehicles for use by their members. Each branch of the military has military and civilian use vehicles, and postmasters deliver mail. Victuallers issuing stores for the different military branches. Museums, universities, municipalities, prisons, on and on.

No one would suggest that Réservé à l'Organisation plates are granted a wide berth by gendarmerie. However, it is widely known that government plates are tightly controlled, and that missing government plates are a security concern. Possession of one of these plates, even outdated historical versions, is illegal for a regular citizen. When a Réservé à l'Organisation plate is physically attached to a vehicle, it must not be removed, and once it is removed, it must be destroyed. A certificate of destruction is then issued to the vehicle's owner.

This matter is taken so seriously that even jokes are followed with incredible earnestness. In 1690, the Ministry of Research Aeronautics and Astronautics Committee (MRAAC) prepared to launch a lunar rover. A wit within the MRAAC determined that, because of the particular definition of vehicles by Oberour Ar Moro, the rover named Hemera should get a Réservé à l'Organisation plate. An application form was facetiously filled out and, possibly by accident, was submitted to the Gendarmerie. With incredible alacrity, a license plate was promptly issued for Hemera, and it was ordered to be affixed to the rover for use. Hemera was launched, with license plates attached to the front and rear of the rover, and the plate's registration number remains on the books as the plate has never been returned.

'A nation energized' as Nyowani Kitara prepares just for its second ever trip to the Copa Rushmori Knockout Stages

"This nation- we are a beacon of hope. We have overcome- left behind the brutalities of civil war, and are fully in the process of putting it fully behind us- and getting to the next stage of peacemaking." Said President Muhoozi Kulan to the National Assembly, when he had offiically announced to the legislature that Nyowani Kitara would bid to bring the Copa Rushmoris onto home soil for the first time. And he has been one to really bring hope back to the country. He's avoided, so far, issues that would bitterly divide his coalition and a lot of the peacemaking process- while he's taken some heat for not prosecuting many leaders of the previous government, with many of them members of the present-day political opposition(namely Nafuna Akongo), we all understand why he hasn't taken that path. And he hasn't gotten around to even changing many communist symbols of the country.

Of course, it's not like he's done nothing in regard's to the country's symbols. All sorts of tributes to the Akongos have been taken down, to the consternation of the KPWC- but admittedly, that's fairly low-hanging fruit. Various places named after any of the three President Akongos(Zelotes, Boaz, and then Nafuna) have been re-named, and a number of statutes have been pulled down. With the President successfully negotiating Common Rushmori Community membership, alongside serious investment from allies(namely Nephara and Eura, although not limited to them), there was legitimate hope that the country would be able to seriously build something of itself after this war.

And the same hope that there is in the country's direction(he's largely kept his coalition united, and remains fairly popular) extends to the very popular national team. Of course, earning 12 points from 12 possible at a major international tournament is always going to earn fantastic reviews- especially when the fans are witnessing it, in person and in real time, on home soil. All four games have been close, with four one goal wins, but look- wins are wins at this stage. "Now we're at the knockout stages of this Copa Rushmori, and things have gotten a lot simpler- it's simply one and done." Said the manager, Liang Wei. "We feel confident, that with our fans backing us, we can beat anybody in the multiverse- and that includes a squad like Elmyia. We don't have to be afraid to dream. But one game at a time- we're going to get all we can handle, and then some more, in Bujukamba."

From a matchup perspective, it's quite an interesting one. Elmyia is unranked- so it was an impressive enough feat that they even made it here. But nobody gave them the script- they were unbeaten during their group stage. They got past far more experienced and historic nations at this CR, like South Jeolerina, Pasarga, and Eastfield Lodge, shocking many to put themselves into the knockout stages. It's a young, hungry, and extremely talented team- clearly the future is being formed with a bright present. The only player above the age of 28 is their starting GK, who is 32 years old. Jackie Froggatt & Gina Wittingham are two extremely talented strikers, capable of scoring against anyone. Our defense looked extremely shaky against Marinanne, we conceded 5 times- that's an area where we can be exploited, yes?

We're not exactly known for ferocious defending. Last 4 games at the World Cup, last four games at the CR- while we've been quite successful(6 wins out of those 8 mentioned!), we haven't held a clean sheet in our last 7 major tournament games. We've never been quite elite at defending, but we had one elite defender- the Testiculo, Armoni Okombo. We've got to figure out the defending- to go unbeaten during group play, like we did, and then to not even reach the quarterfinals of a major tournament at home would only qualify as a massive disappointment. We've probably got the deeper squad- but any given day, right?

We'll see. All we can do is watch- it'll be up to the 23 on the roster to pull out the points and reach the last 8 of this very competition, for the first time in our nation's history. It's in our grasp- let's get it done.

The Overlap
Porras Bags Historic Achievement - But Freschi-Less Team Looks Brittle

The Pau Porras revolution has bagged its first big achievement - Elmyia will go on to play their first ever senior knockout game. His focus on attacking, gun-ho, football has finally produced a reward in an unbeaten group stage to set up an exciting tie with hosts Nyowani Kitara.

The fact that he has achieved this with some major personnel issues speaks further to his coaching ability, but the lack of Mario Freschi anchoring defence has certainly left Elmyia looking vulnerable at the back. The experienced Italia defender would be one of only two older heads on the team, and in a young and understaffed backline he has been a constant of maturity and solidity at the back. His absence was surely felt in a helter-skelter display against Eastfield Lodge, with Elmyia managing to progress despite some glaring issues with their performance.

Truly a game of two halves, you could argue Elmyia dropping a 3-1 lead over Eastfield Lodge had as much to do with Nephara cruising against South Jeolerina as it did with their own efforts. Elmyia did look irresistible in the first half, the lack of an experienced head at the back matters little when the game takes place in the opponents half. Grosso and Savalas had plenty of ability to keep the ball moving as attacks progressed in waves. For all the praise that Whittingham and Froggatt get, and will likely get for this game having taken a goal apiece, Kostas Rossi's thrilling directness was the main weapon in the first half. The commentator seemed concerned that he and Beresford were frequently getting into the same areas, replicating each other's work, but this allowed them to work the ball well down the wing to provide crosses from wide, and vertical passing through the channel. Depel's whipped deliveries added further urgency and helped supply for the goals.

The first half also contained a warning, however. For as well as Elmyia pinned their more experienced opponents back, a counter-attacking break did see them go to 2-1 before the third prior to half-time. The second half saw the contest pull back the other way. Elmyia knew they were likely through as Nephara took a commanding lead, but the two goals conceded in the 82nd and 87th minutes saw them pass up the opportunity for only a second win in this tournament against a team labouring towards the exit. The substitutions of Simmons for Marinos and Depel for Marakakis also seemed to tilt the balance. Marinos is nothing like the screening presence of Simmons, and only improves marginally in terms of distribution. Marakakis also had an indifferent appearance, struggling to influence play forward.

Going into the clash with the hosts, we know both teams have a weakness at the back and a forward line that are hard to deal with. Elmyia's shape, with the three of Grosso, Savalas and Simmons often offering the only real cover, might struggle against a team likely to push 4 players forward. Wang Jiahui on the right might be a particular threat attacking the space behind Katsouranis, who remains somewhat defensively suspect to be a full-back. The duels between Savalas and Grosso and Negasu and Angonga upfront will also be key in deciding the fight in this part of the pitch. With Simmons sat back, the midfield is a 2 vs. 2, so expect Galli's determination to get around the pitch to be a key factor. Froggatt and Rossi will also be key, not only in attacking, but also trying to pin full-backs Mushonga and Ayange, otherwise Elmyia could find the wings a great source of weakness and discomfort.

Elmyia have never played in a knockout tie, to have made it this far is already an achievement. To have taken 4 points from Nephara and Pasarga is an achievement. Yet, without Freschi, questions remain over just where the ceiling is.

BLACKHALL INTERNATIONAL MONITOR: THE LATEST WORLD NEWS STORIES FROM A BASTION PERSPECTIVE

POLES APART
This year’s Copa Rushmori is captivating the region as much as it ever does, and particularly Eurans, who won all four of their group stage games to progress to the round of sixteen with ease. But many Rushmori eyes have been turned to Group Stacie Kerrigan, where an old giant of the Rushmori game has returned to the field. Polar Islandstates were a bit out of touch, it seems – they exited the tournament with a win, a draw and two defeats – and it might have stung a bit to lose to old rivals Sargossa on the final matchday of the group stage.

With more practice, most Euran commentators have concluded that it’s safe to assume the Polarians will have the potential to get back to their old ways. What is less assured is their future off the pitch. In recent decades what we knew as the Valhallan Union has retreated into itself. The faded diplomatic and economic giant has become unfamiliar; on EBC News, Eura’s flagship public television news channel, at least three different anchors have been mocked on social media for being visibly discombobulated by the concepts of the Federation that barely resembled what they had known earlier in their lives, of True Valhallans, of Minor Valhalla, and a Valhallan Union whose dynamics had profoundly changed in the intervening years.

Eurans don’t usually get enough credit for paying attention to what is going on overseas. A visitor might be surprised by how often the average man or woman in the street could tell you something about the politics or history of far flung lands. Once upon a time the vastly different Polar Islandstates was one of these places, distant culturally and geographically, but somehow as familiar as the Holden valley. Polarian footballers and politicians were household names. Then came the change. The turning inwards brought on by fear and humiliation of the Sargossan variety, a people and a country turned neurotic as a default setting.

The Party, as it has become colloquially known in Polarian life, has taken over said life and turned the country into something resembling a social ranking app. Everyone and everything is steered towards the idea of being a “True Valhallan” and the status that brings you with the regime. Forget the cuddly, turtleneck wearing, endlessly progressive architects and police detectives of stereotype lore. This is a different Polar Islandstates. At one point Euran civil society and politicians were deeply concerned by the shift, as you would expect from a traditional ally, but then interest faded.

Suddenly, Eurans have been reminded that, yes, democracy and freedom don’t always win out, after forgetting about their old friends in the north for decades. The ”reTern” of Polarian football is probably most accurately interpreted as a sportswashing exercise by a regime that always needs a new gimmick or shiny toy to wave in front of the exhausted masses. But maybe it offers an opening too, an opportunity, for an older idea of what the Polar Islandstates could be to re-emerge. Expats and exiles got a look in through this tournament that they have lacked for a very long time. Unfortunately, Valhallan citizens themselves did not get to join the party; only the players and their “security” detail travelled with them. Perhaps real change is still a long way off.

Part 12: The End Of An Era

PUFF was onboard with him coming back to the coaching position for the 43rd Copa Rushmori. He had more than delivered on all his initial promises, and Loyalty is an important Union virtue. The players were pleased to see him, but had their reservations about how wise his return actually was. His family were furiously opposed, and he probably spent more time negotiating with them than he did strategizing with his staff or instructing the squad.

Fanny and Alexander - his kids, now young adults - lambasted him for continuing to prioritize the Dandelions over his family. Surely, they said, someone else could step in and carry on his work. Not the case, was his response. He had always been stubborn, and evermore so as he grew older. He wasn’t done yet, he said, the Dandelions not yet what he envisioned. He needed more time. Time is a finite resource, Fanny told him, and the extra time he thought he was buying, he actually stole from himself. He didn’t like that, because it sounded like something he could’ve said. And he often had, when Fanny insisted on staying up late on a school night. His health was much improved, this was true enough. But his own accounts of revitalized strength were often heavily modified, and in his own mind he knew very well he was still functioning at a reduced capacity. He was determined to make the most of it and intensified the squad’s Copa preparations, longing for another cycle to kick off.

When the time came, he travelled to Nyowani Kitara without having truly reconciled with his family, but his focus was elsewhere. Another opening game, another group stage and beyond. And they did well, his Dandelions. Three straight wins sealed them their ticket to the Ro16 with “a game to spare”. Round of 16, here we come, he was heard mumbling to himself as he was looking over the fixtures. Cabo Azure, then on to quarters, maybe finally beating Nephara and eternal glory against Græntfjall, he was heard prophesying loudly. Then he got a glimpse of himself in the mirror, looking utterly deranged.

It was a face devoid of proper moderation and instead deeply riveted by expectation. He had succumbed to exactly what he had cautioned others against. And then and there he knew he was done. Like how he had quit tennis. How he outgrew Port Kejm. Old Friends. Or when he stopped coaching for close to two decades. It was like it just happened in an instant. Sure, it was no doubt some gradual internal mental procedure going on, but it hit him like a bullet from a concealed gun, or an aneurysm. Suddenly, that is. He was done. He looked around him, at the players, the staffers, the gear and the water-bottles, and all he could think about was the inevitability of death, how he missed his family and that football had once more lost its allure, and this time for good.

He gathered the players on the afternoon they were playing Cabo Azure, and he told them the old gnejsian folk tale about the man who took his Friend for granted (he died screaming). Nothing else needed to be said, they all understood. The players got on their feet and lined up to shake his hand. When they were done, he wished them good luck and went straight to the airport, leaving the Dandelions in the shaking hands of Timotej.

He informed PUFF of his decision while waiting for the plane, apologizing for breaking his word. The representative showed no ill feelings, and explained that recent developments actually made his departure a blessing. She said she’d been instructed not to dwell on the finer details of the arrangement, but suffice to say that the Dandelions would have a new coach come the World Cup qualifications.

He boarded his plane, and ended an era of Union football. For his own part, it felt like a new phase had just begun.

The Cormorants were clicking.
It had taken a bit. They'd got off to an unsteady start against Elmyia, before managing a 3-2 win over Pasarga that was, while a big result against a strong team, still scrappy. But it started to come together, after that. Tanith Xu gassed the entire Lodge defence before slamming home an opening goal early on, a Kvasina free kick made it 2 and, of course, the Anharbour special - coming off the bench to gash an exhausted team - made it 3. They were through by then, and able to rest a number of players against South Jeolerina; they took a while to get going, but when Tryna Drnaso got them started by fizzing in a shot off the inside of the post, just before half-time, they didn't miss a step in a clinical second half.

How nice it would have been to have some of that clinical edge back. Instead, they'd put in a stop-start first half against Schutzenphalia.
After the group had been settled and the permutations of knockout rounds were being calculated, it wasn't so much the opponent that the Cormorants and travelling fans had their eye on; it was, 'oh, Christ, please let the next round be in Dewayo'. The Cormorants were despised in Port Viljan, and utterly loathed in Inhalo. But Dewayo? There were still people there who had been gaslit into thinking the Nepharim were saviours!
And maybe that was lulling the Cormorants into a false sense of security. Or, more likely, SWR were a tough, spirited side, counting among their ranks a tough Zenith centre-half in Ndosi and a clever playmaker in Starling's Lukas Wolf, well-marshalled by Max Renner, a tinkering tactician whose choice of a 4-3-1-2 diamond successfully stifled Nephara across the first half.
Signs in the second were only a little better, despite Cantor's strring exhortations at half-time, but despite a disjointed overall performance they did have a significant ace up their sleeve: Lindse Kvasina, who had been in and out of the team in the years prior but never quite fallen out of contention, and had been imperious through the tournament. The 29-year old prima donna showed why she truly was the first lady, stepping effortlessly inside Geyer in just such a way that sent him tumbling to the floor in a vague effort to tackle her with his head, then curling a strike just beyond Kaplan with the scant inch of space she had before Klor had her.
The breakthrough. They could all breathe again. Until Stefan Kandel thumped home a Wolf corner just five minutes later.
Cantor threw up her arms, then threw on March and Southsea, a midfield reshuffle - each player a better pure passer than the one they were replacing - in an effort to win the midfield battle. They did win the midfield battle, but a cut-throat edge proved elusive; Vetiver was denied one-on-one by Kaplan, then had a later strike ruled marginally offside after an agonising four-minute VAR wait. Madita Brewer thumped a shot off the base of the post after having done basically nothing else all match, handily in Bruckner's pocket. And it just had the feeling of one of those days, going into extra time; how precisely were Nephara ever going to break through?
Well, in the event, Scales just thumped home a Kvasina corner.
The rest of the game opened up massively after that, an exhausted SWR forced to chase the game, and Vetiver and the substitute Drnaso needed only exploit holes after lofted balls over the top. 4-1 was not a deserved gloss on the scoreline. But it did show that Nephara could dig deep, when pressed; that most elusive of qualities for a mercurial team.

In another tie, Elmyia had put up a strong showing against the hosts, but ultimately fallen just shy. After a brilliant unbeaten group stage, this surely was still a success as an unranked side.
And it also meant that Nyowani Kitara would be playing Nephara next, eager to impress on home soil. And where on home soil, exactly, would that be... ?
In Ibarnet.

Defense shuts down Southwest Eastnorth,
by Caitlyn Dufresne, Concord Heights Times

Here in Nyowani Kitara, only sixteen national teams remained as the coveted title of Copa Rushmori 43 champions is at stake. The Fillies finished in the top spot in Group Ausilio Calabrese, but would only be the #5 seed in the competition despite an overall great campaign when looking at goals scored and goal differential. Only one other nation was as good as we were, and that was Graintfjall. The numbers between us and them were identical across the board, and the forced the organizers to get out the coin and decide who was going to play Mytanija and who was going to play Southwest Eastnorth. Many joked that the winner of the coin toss was really the loser, because Mytanija was the #13 seed, and not the #12. Both Cassadaigua and Graintfjall would take care of business in their round of sixteen game, and an intriguing quarterfinal match is in store. I would venture a guess that devices will be tuned in for that contest not only within Rushmore, but throughout the world.

To get there, Team Cassadaigua needed to take care of business against an adversary that at one time scored a surprise win over us and their media really enjoyed talking about it for a really long time. The team known as the Pioneers prefer to play an offensive style, and utilize three defenders and three forwards to accomplish their mission. Such a formation could spell trouble when up against the 4-3-3 used by Chen Huikang, especially when talking about the high scoring trio of Lexi McGregor, Lacey Sherwood, and Shannon Cunningham, all of whom had a great group stage. Like we saw in previous games, the Fillies pushed for the game's opening goal pretty quickly from the gate. This is something that Chen was asked about before the game, in what really seems to be a major desire to aggressively score early on, "You approach every team and every game differently, but most of these games that we have had so far, the advantage of scoring the first goal is very clear. When you are the favorite in a match, you need to quickly get it out of the other team's head that they can pull off an upset against you. We have some young legs, especially up front, and I know they really enjoy this approach. I am not saying I will do this all the time, as obviously, I am not going to be predictable, but knowing your opponent is paramount." In just the seventh minute of the match, Lacey Sherwood drew a yellow card on Jace Arnold, and the two of them got into a bit of a heated argument before the referee separated them. Yes, my friends, that's Rutland FC's Jace Arnold, and let's not forget that Rutland Dockside (Lacey's team) and Rutland FC are bitter rivals. So, surely a little Rutland on Rutland message being sent there and the Cassadagan fans in attendance (and there was alot of them, were well aware of that, and I sense the referee was as well).

Two minutes later, in the ninth, Sherwood set up Lexi McGregor with a nice pass that Lexi finished off for the games opening goal, and Lexi would do one of her patented backflips. Unexpectedly, however, Lacey Sherwood did one with her, and that really drew applause from the Cassadagan faithful in the crowd. From that point, there was a lot of back and forth play here in the Stomping Grounds, with each team having extended periods of time trying to attack the net. This is where the defense of the Fillies was particularly impressive, with Tiffany Brown and Alyssa Marlin completely shutting down any attempts of the Pioneers to get near the penalty area and kept Southwest Eastnorth shooters along the perimeter. This is where their shots would come from, and goalkeeper Stacie Thornton was not going to have any trouble with them. Our score would remain 1-0 for quite some time, but in the 40th minute, the Fillies would be able to extend their lead, and it would be from Jenna Stokley. This was a set play in which the Fillies really looked to take advantage of the structure of the Pioneers and only having three defenders back as Southwest Eastnorth. Kaitlin Millikan was nicely used as a decoy on the play as the defense focused more on our forwards. Stokley was in a prime shooting spot, and took advantage.

With a 2-0 lead to start the second half, the team knew that there would be a push by their opponent, and kept their focus on keeping it contained. As we saw in the first half, the Pioneers could not get any passes through to near the penalty area, and were forced to take shots from a longer distance, or to risk losing possession. They would try, though, and when balls did get on net, Thornton make it look very easy. Probably, because for a keeper of her caliber, they were. She finishes the day with a clean sheet, but there's not that one save anywhere that she made that you would look at as being a true highlight reel stop. On those highlights, you should instead focus on the defense. In the 81st minute, the Fillies would strike again, coming off the foot of Carly Patterson, who replaced Lacey Sherwood just six minutes prior. The final score will read 3-0, in a well played all around by the pink and black.

Afterwards, I asked Alyssa Marlin about the dominant game by the defense here today. She would answer me by saying, "We were ready for them. We knew how they like to play, and were prepared to shut it down. We had to work for it, but I really like how in sync we were right from the start of the game. We'll have a bigger challenge up ahead, for sure". It was not known to the team at that point who their next opponent would be. I also asked her defense teammate Tiffany Brown about what it is like playing for a new coach with an offensive mindset, "Ya know, I think it's cool. With Coastal, we play like that, so I am used to being in this type of system. A lot of us on defense are, so it's not going to catch us off guard. It's good to have a lot of work back there, too." Tiffany has, at times, come forward a lot more and joined the attack, something that Coastal will have her do quite a bit. On that, coach Chen replied, "Yeah, I have seen Tiffany do it with her team there in Starksville and it's a weapon that I like to have and can deploy at various points in the game. Her versatility is really a great strength. She is still young, so I will be looking to make the most of her skillset."

Top ranked Graintfjall awaits our third-ranked Fillies next, so it is certainly the most star-studded quarterfinal matchup. The Snow Wolves have a lot of their national team playing in other leagues, and this sets up a couple of interesting head to head matchups with defender Jan Játmundsson and forward Shannon Cunningham, who are teammates with Alino in Chromatika being one to watch. Cunningham joked that, "I'm glad he's healthy for this. I don't know if he will be directly assigned to me all that often, but it will be fun. When you go up against someone you know like that, you like to pretend that you know their secrets based on practices and all that, but the truth is at this level, you have to do what got you here and not worry about the other person so much". Cunningham's jab on the healthy part of Játmundsson is because of some injury issues with Alino. Also on the Snow Wolves is Anarr Ebergsson, a member of Montreal Koreana in Quebec. The Fillies have not just one, but two members of Montreal Koreana on their team: Chloe Anderson and Lauren Engle. Anderson is arguably the biggest name on Koreana but neither are starters in the World Cup. Both may be used as a substitute, however. (Engle also is not a starter). Chloe Anderson looks forward to that, "Montreal Koreana pride! We got four players total in this game!" Joel Wolfgangsson, a backup forward who likely has great chemistry with Anderson up front in Quebec, is also part of the Graintfjall roster.

Those backstories are always fun to look at, and whoever wins this game will carry all the bragging rights when they get back home to play for their club sides. It should be a great game!

Officially, Cabo Azure has one language–Azurean–and all road signs, legal documents, and official correspondence must be in Azurean. Sometimes called a creole, Azurean is a regional variant of the language variously known as Lusitanian and Portuguese, inherited from the conquering Knights of St. Simon who originally settled the islands. Its grammar and lexicon are somewhat esoteric in that language, owing to the islands’ relative isolation; modern Azurean publications might resemble medieval writings from other Lusophone cultures.

Unofficially, Cabo Azure is a chain of islands, largely dependent on foreign trade, which lies off the Terranean Coast. Its closest neighbors, Ceni, New Gelderland, Electrum, and the Isles of Avon, all speak Terranean as their primary language, as do the Royal Kingdom of Quebec and Cassadaigua, two of Cabo Azure’s biggest security partners, and Eura, its largest trading partner. Moreover, Terranean is lingua franca in Pavola, where an increasing number of diasporic Azureans live and work. Note the one major Terranean-speaking nation left out of the list; Nephara looms large indeed in the Azurean imagination.

Cabo Azure has long had relaxed immigration laws; the islands’ isolation, relative poverty, and idiosyncratic culture have mainly deterred would-be immigrants, and those arriving from overseas normally have a good reason for doing so. Recently Cabo has been touted as a destination for digital nomads, individuals from developed countries with remote-work jobs who seek exotic locations to call home for their relaxed culture and cheaper cost of living. For the first decades of the information age, when the only foreign goods available in Cabo Azure were imported at-cost from Nephara and Quebec, it was seen as too expensive and isolated to be a destination. More recently, with trade agreements in force with Eura and Quebec, the consumer price index has lowered enough to make Cabo an attractive destination.

Though the numbers are small, the sudden arrival of a Terranean-only workforce has been a shock to many Azurean institutions. Despite widespread understanding of conversational Terranean–it is said to be the primary language of Silva Holdings, Cabo Azure’s largest private employer–the translation infrastructure is in a sorry state. There is no certification process for Azurean translators, meaning that getting official documents translated is a crapshoot at best. Moreover, there is widespread grassroots resistance to what has been dubbed the “Terranification” of Cabo Azure. Opinions on this topic tend to break along class, rather than political party or geographic, lines. Working-class Azureans, whether they work in agriculture on one of the minor islands, shipping in Sao Simone, or the service industry, tend to see increasing use of Terranean as both beneficial and inevitable, whereas middle- and upper-class Azureans see it as a threat to their way of life.

CHAOS IN KARORA

NAIXI WIN AFTER HECTIC SEVEN-GOAL FIRST HALF AND MENARD RED CARD IN SECOND

Run Ming Kwan's stupendous start to his tenure as Blues manager has continued as tiny Naixi have registered a shocking victory in the Copa Rushmori Round of Sixteen over regional hegemon Eura. After racing out to a completely inexplicable three goal lead, Naixi wilted as the Eurans stormed back and restored parity by the half hour mark, Adam Woodman in particular causing massive problems. But youngster Min Jiao - a total outsider to the national team setup until former club boss Kwan gave him a start - quickly made it four three heading into half time. Oscar Vincent's equalizer just after the interval earned him a brace, but then a second yellow card for Euran captain Jack Menard in the second half wrecked the three-time Copa champions' plans for dominance, and Qi Chao Hark tapped in his third of the night in the 64th minute to put Naixi back in front one final time.

It was a historic day for football in the Celestial Empire, to be sure, but a black day for the current holders of the Cup of Harmony, who regularly found themselves overrun in midfield despite having vastly superior players. The stern face of Qi Chao Hark, whose wandering into half wing areas constantly created numbers problems for the Euran midfield two, will give Euran fans nightmares for months to come. Players who are at the zenith of their powers, such as Tom Hammond, Jack Menard, and Ana Mason, were notably poor, and the turmoil in the Euran FA, which had seemed to die down following the team's success in the Cup of Harmony, may now be set to roil back up again.

Naixi were hardly perfect - they speed with which they deteriorated after having been three nil up was alarming. Jiu Ling Geng in particular seemed to lack the proper mentality for the occasion. His persistent fouling created plentiful set piece opportunities for Eura that Lu Fang Huang did not deal with well. Geng was hooked in the second half, and with Aierlanren's defensive warrior Hai Ying Fu on the pitch instead, Naixi looked far more stable. Wei Yan Lin, too, was unimpressive, and Kwan's experiments with using the Yanjiang winger as a full back appeared to end when Guan Cai Tsung replaced her on the hour mark.

The referee's performance could perhaps have been better; he seemed to show yellows much too casually for things like excessive celebration and dissent. This certainly contributed to Jack Menard's expulsion, as the Eura captain had acquired a first half booking for criticizing a simple offside call. Some might argue that Menard ought not to have said anything, but most referees are lenient with polite disagreements for precisely the reason we saw today - if you start dishing out bookings for petty things, you have to dish them them out non-stop until there's a red card, and that makes a mess of an otherwise great match.
