As part of our New Year's resolutions, actually releasing our monthly updates, well, monthly, was on the list, somewhere between "raid" and "pay our taxes". We're still working on the latter point, but we're pleased to announce that we have kept to both of the other resolutions! We have released our foreign affairs update for the month of January, so that the good people of NationStates may be enlightened as to what their much-beloved heroes have been up to. We even got a new banner for it! New year, new LWU, after all. You may read the tales of this month's exploits here.

We in Lone Wolves United are well-known for our dedication to what is right. Continuing on the spirit we showed the last time we raided for what was internally pitched as a “good cause”. Lobbyist Wolves United took to this with great zeal, swiftly finding the place most suited to pitch the virtues of the fossil fuel industry: New Dinosaurtopia. With our good friends from the West Pacific Armed Forces to help us out, the brave wolves were elected to the delegacy in a second after moving to the region. A feat made possible by the use of premium gasoline. You’d never get that kind of speed out of a battery. Immediately, the region’s newly added profit counter shot up by 5, showing how climate change fuels the economy. Truly, there are no limits to what the fossil fuel industry has to offer. Except fossil fuels, of course, but we can Shell out a few bucks for a coup somewhere to keep it flowing.

If you are not yet convinced of the virtues of the fossil fuel industry and climate change, we have some more fun facts for your hearts and minds:
1. It is definitely cooler to say you drive on dinosaurs than some charge from a socket.
2. Nobody likes baby penguins anyway.
3. If we stopped using fossil fuels then the dinosaurs would have died for nothing.
4. Climate change will lead to more affordable beachfront property.

Statement on the Closure of Embassies with the North

Lone Wolves United is not a region to make public statements upon matters of diplomatic relations. We do not generally consider it the business of the public what is discussed between Lone Wolves United and its partners. However, when taking a measure so drastic as to publicly close embassies with a region we have maintained amicable relations with, we believe it is in the best interests of everyone to explain our reasoning for doing so. This is not a decision we take lightly, but we feel that our hand is forced in the matter. As such, our reasoning for our closure of the on-site embassy with the North Pacific is as follows:

On the 26th of March, I was approached by Hulldom on the matter of the Security Council vote on the proposal to Condemn Chef Big Dog, better known as Tom. Tom is a prolific raider and a historic member of Lone Wolves United. As such, this is a proposal LWU has a vested interest in passing. Hulldom sent me a screenshot of a message he received from HumanSanity, a screenshot he deleted later. Within it, HumanSanity, in their capacity as Minister of Foreign Affairs of the South Pacific, threatened that TSP, as well as prominent defender allies such as the League, the Order of the Grey Wardens and 10000 Islands, would go out of their way to oppose all proposals commending or condemning TNP members if the North Pacific did not vote the way they wanted: that is, against all proposals they perceived as benefitting LWU. A threat as blatant as one can get in gameplay.

What followed was a long discussion with Hulldom regarding condemn Tom, from which it became clear that Hulldom was aware the defenders were essentially attempting to strong-arm TNP into voting their way. As he disclosed to me, defenders were acting like “thugs”. While this was a matter for TNP to resolve, I privately decided to hold off on submitting the proposal temporarily until I had more certainty on how to proceed. This threat followed from an earlier attempt by defenders to pressure Hulldom to oppose the vote: at the time, Hulldom had already offered to compromise by abstaining from the vote. We requested that TNP would make their position clear once they had dealt with this attempt at cowing them into submission.

On the 5th of April, Hulldom informed me he and the defender regions that had threatened the North had “figured it out”. Inquiring further, it became clear to me Hulldom had caved under the defenders’ threat. This was a huge blow to our confidence in the North Pacific, as we had expected Hulldom would not allow a region we knew to be proud, storied and influential, to be pushed around by people that clearly regarded it as nothing more than a voter pile they could force to do as they wish. The willingness to not only tolerate such blatant disrespect but also to cave to pressure from defenders was deeply damaging to LWU’s trust in Hulldom’s administration as a diplomatic partner. However, Hulldom had led us to believe this was on the matter of Tom’s condemn, and that this was a specific case.

At the same time, a proposal to condemn Dream Killers, one of LWU’s oldest, most historic and key members, had been drafted on the forum, with Hulldom as co-author for this proposal. When I asked Hulldom directly on the 5th on whether he would vote against it, I was informed this was the line he had drawn, and that defenders “knew it was off the table”. He stressed this to me that condemn Dream Killers was still a proposal that could count on his support.

As a result of the promise he made us, we started the discussion on when to submit condemn Dream Killers among the co-authors. Hulldom, in his capacity as co-author, participated in this discussion. When we decided on the weekend of the 15th, Hulldom requested to talk to me privately. During this discussion, he revealed he had shared the intended submission date with defenders. This would be alarming to us in its own right, as we considered it leaking a discussion he was privy to to a party he knew was hostile towards it. However, what really upset us was what came next.

Not only had he shared the submission date with defenders, he informed me defenders were once again threatening him, using commend MadJack (currently at vote) as leverage. Hulldom informed me that the option that was “off the table” (in his own words) was now no longer so. Having been led to believe by Hulldom that he was not caving to defenders’ wishes, first by compromising on condemn Tom, then going back on the compromise but assuring us condemn Dream Killers was still a proposal he was in support of, this shattered what little faith we had left in Hulldom’s administration in the North Pacific.

The series of broken promises, breaches of trust and the willingness to buckle under foreign pressure is something we never expected from a region as proud and historic as the North Pacific. No diplomatic partner will always see eye to eye on everything with us, and we recognise this; however, we firmly believe that we must be able to trust our partners. And the Hulldom administration has damaged that trust repeatedly to the point where we can no longer in good conscience maintain embassies with the North Pacific. We wish them all the best moving forward.

I've never been one to have great confidence in Hulldom's delagacy- but this is even to me surprising at how TNP bowed to defender pressure. Definitely the polar opposite of what independence is about and this is to summarise, pretty low. Instead of seeking allies and friendship, the way TNP bowed down to "thugs" bossing them around seemingly almost instantly really goes to show where the Hulldom government's FA interests lie.
