Dr. Heo and the Portal of Madness II: Map of the Problematique

PART 2.6 (39) - Raincatchers

'What do you think, miss Moran?' asked Henri VIII, as he looked back at Hannah Moran. 'From what you have seen so far, he's wondering in the crossroads of his afterlife, one that lies in a conflict between life and death, as he was drowning that snowy, mid-November afternoon in 2013 Cornwall.' He then continued. 'And at that moment, it felt certain that he, had he actually drowned himself to that moment at age 22, would have lived a thousand more years in limbo. That one enjoys while neither dead nor living, of being the next Yeomra The Great, the Lord Almighty of the Underworld.'

'So he could have been Yeomra The Great, instead of coming back to life and be with...' said Hannah, as she noticed the flowers glow further and further, their pollens heading towards Dr. Heo's half-submerged body. 'I would assume his late wife. Maureen Turner. Was it?'

'Not so fast,' answered Henri VIII, stopping but to emphasise what had happened afterwards. There was a sense of irony in here for Henri, especially when considering that he, who's recounting all of this, ended up being the last-minute, adjunct appointment to the Yeomra position (wait what?????) for next forty years after Dr. Heo's refusal to assume the position. 'But you are getting there. A good friend, who he had told all about the late Maureen, had noticed that he wasn't receiving to his call, and went out to the gigantic, tabletop rock by Lake Mahan. He dived to save his friend from being appointed.'

Hannah was stunned. In the very era that had coincided with the matter of life and death, where the world was under the crazies of the COVID-ae crisis and the Quebecois soldiers, including that of the Narrator's very own son Jacques IX, were busy liberating the oppressed souls of Nazi Felix...the fates of millions were left in the device of a college senior. Stuck in the circular chronotope of Cornwall, where the well-rolled, high-character humanities of the Queen's College were playing with the topic of life and death, the weight of the all-encompassing narrative of the Shingoryeoite state were very much left in the hands of Dr. Heo, who was close to accepting it all. Henri VIII's observations of the tragedy while in the earlier days of the Underground, while he was still getting used to the no-contact, all-desire afterlife, were all that had kept him in balance and check as well, as he would remind himself the weight felt ifferently by those who had shared the pieces of Creator's soul after him.

'I see,' said Hannah in a deeper tone, reflecting more into the calm, chilly timbre of her mother's singing voice, as she opened her left hand. 'Your Majesty, will you please give me the flowers?'

'Why, yes,' answered Henri VIII, as he formed a slight grin to suggest approval. '이덕춘 (李德春) Hannah Moran, drop the flowers to see what were left in waiting for him then.'

This was a gigantic blow for Dong-Woo. Admittedly, by the end of the 2012-13 school year, Dong-Woo's yearning for Maude Turner had remained to some degree, even if she had tried to deny her own part in the saga that had quietly left those of his world, whose shock at the damage the 'red-haired dancer girl' had done to their darling, in shock and disgust. But by the end of it all, all had come to a realisation that Dong-Woo, no matter how much he had tried and what he had won in that glorious year for the 'immortals' men's fencing team's threepeat in the nationals, had lost it all. Perhaps too much. Likely not enough. There was no chance, or at least we thought, that they would collide into the circle of fate again.

Occasionally her world of dancers, models and funnily enough, wannabe politiques would notice him on the streets, and so would his world of future barristers, scholars and parliamentarians, and they would attempt to use each other's flaws - that of her insensitivity and seduction, and that of his heartfirst romanticism - to set a war of unspoken war. I still remember those days and wonder how such a small, minor object like Dong-Woo's love could cause the deafening silence on a small city of 150,000 people. Their occasional encounters, usually in the city's downtown located just minutes away from the hilly campus and 'The Lake', were a charged sight...Nobody left off happy in those by the end, almost as if our normal selves could just turn into fiery angels in defence of our respective companies.

In an attempt to resolve himself, Dong-Soo sought himself in studies of the Novopetrogradian intelligentsia a century prior, whose thinkers wrote like novelists and whose novelists wrote like philosophers, then in sword. He would make himself noticed, and that spring would see his name not only being approved for admissions to the University of Kingston's Slavonic Studies program, but also earn selection into the eight members of the national men's sabre team.

The sudden arrival of fame, one that would arrive in the new year after his suicide attempt, had brought him a sense of hope, but also a surge to let her know. The words of his success would reach Maude, who would think twice about her mistake, and in a last-ditch attempt, would send invitation to her 21st birthday to him and Sam Laetner on July 18th. Only one of them would make, however, for the evening of her birthday party, he nearly died.'

Hannah noticed that the scene changed. Freed from the binding of the End of Maude, whose dimensions had loosened up and slipped into one of the normal times where everything had fallen back into the normal narrative, Dr. Heo was still in attendance by the Huyramarcan librarian in his cloaked form, the parchment of his life-changing moment in visibility.

The room was still dark with no change to the furniture. But now, Dr. Heo was wearing the dark, long-tailed coat of a Gangrimdoryeong (강림도령, 降臨道令 - crown counsel of the Dead in Shingoryeoite underworld. And at the farthest end of the very long wall, there stood the emerald-made Schottic Torch with its golden handle and pole. It emitted little light, reflecting the mental state of all those present, near and far.

'The name changed from that of Dong-Woo to Dong-Soo, from Sam Laetner to Don Lautner, and of course Maude to Maureen,' Dr. Heo pointed out. 'And all of the sudden, the details reflected like that of my own life...almost as if the document had started documenting stories back into our world. I still remember the feeling of driving along the Lakeshore Expressway, in the hopes of seeing her, in a rented car...the wheels broke down and so did the brakes...'

'Yes, it was you who, after all, could have died like me, your dear Creator. But was saved thanks to a friend,' said the voice from the dark void. 'That, admittedly, denied you the opportunity to become the Yeomra the Great, but at the same time, allowed you to have a second chance at putting your life back...'

At that very moment, The Creator emerged out of the dark void and towards them, holding the Schottic Torch in his left hand while wearing the large-sized indigo 'University of Toronto' hoodie. His glasses were slightly messy and his hair had grown a little bit since their encounter just hours ago (which had meant days, if not weeks, ago on The Creator's side), The Creator smiled at the elderly, still feeling amused with how similar their facial expressions showed, even with over three decades of age difference between the three of them.

'I see that our Gangrimdoryeong has made a long way around,' said The Creator, as he looked at only his second-latest creation made from his soul's pieces in satisfaction. 'Not the Yeomra the Great he was offered, but still no less of a position. Rather, one that fits the fulfillment of life he has long needed in those dark days without Maureen Turner....' He then offered the torch back to Dr. Heo, as he looked back at them. '천년을 다닐 준비가 됬느냐? (Are you ready to serve for next thousand years?'

'For the next thousand years of quest? To punish those who has outlived the threads of their lives, and to reward those who have earned those rights?' Dr. Heo asked in a rhetorical matter, remembering his knowledge of the Shingoryeoite world of spirituality. 'I mean, it's inevitable for me, wasn't it?'

'Let's say it's better late than never,' The Creator smiled at him, before looking back to the void. 'We have a world to fix. You, Hannah Moran and Jang Joon-Gweon has to mend these walls that crumble on these waters,' he coughed. 'And it cannot be done without retrieving most painful and yet joyful of your memories...so we could obtain the peace that is required for the Tribunal.' Then he asked him again. '준비가 됬느냐? (Are you ready?)'

'Who else could be,' was all that Dr. Heo said.

Playoff Watch: Poafmersia fails to score at home; fans await win in Poafmersia's 200th WCQ game
Fiskadaha - The Red Panjias held higher-ranked Kandorith to a goalless draw, leaving the game to the single-match in Kandorith to decide the team that qualifies to the World Cup proper.

It was a fustrating game for the Poafmersian offence, who came on the back of a 7-4 win at home against Magnecia, aiming to show the team's capabilities. In particular, Jordan Huerta made a total of 5 shots on target, which were all parried out by the opposition goalkeeper. In total, across all 90 minutes, the Red Panjias made 17 shots, including 9 shots on target. Huerta described the opposition keeper as being on point. "Shojiro Ito was being really solid today, and while we tried really creative ways of scoring, nothing seemed to have went past his eagle-sharp eyes and powerful hands today," said the striker. "All of us will need to take these 3 days between now and the next leg to figure out where we can do better so that we can score the goals necessary to win the game in Kandorith."

On the other side, Nicole Potts proved once again that she was St John Arsenal's top keeper, in spite of her age. She was crucial in saving 2 attempts from Takeshi Honda, the only 2 targets on goal for the oppositon goalkeeper. Adnan Suliaha continued to sing praises of her. "Nicole Potts had shown the top notch quality of a Poafmersian goalkeeper, and the defence did quite well today to stop the opposition from conceeding a goal today." Adnan added that there is no pressure on the team at all after the goalless draw, saying that the Red Panjias are definitely in the race for the qualification spot. "Our away form during the Qualifiers have not been too bad, and if we can replicate the top-notch form for the game against Kandorith, we have it in us to win the game."

Royal Quebecois Football Association (RQFA)

The Royal Quebecois Football Association Part Ways With Manager Ruben Condori

~

RENEEGRAD, JOONGYEONG FEDERAL PROVINCE - On behalf of the footballing community of Quebec and Shingoryeo, the Royal Quebecois Football Association (RQFA) would like to place a note of gratitude to Ruben Condori and his staff for their efforts during their time with the Independent Athletes from Quebec senior team. Ruben will have a place in the nation's footballing history after qualifying for a second-round appearance at the World Cup 92, after staging one of the greatest second-half turnaround in nation's history.

As the RQFA looks to re-assess the performance following the disastrous performance at the World Cup 93 qualification stage including the playoffs, and as it aims to providea stronger foundation for the team's future, the RQFA Board of Governors believe it is the right time to prepare for a new transition.

The IAQ managerial staff will be taking charge of the national team for the course of the 85th Cup of Harmony, as the RQFA is underway to decide the course on selecting the next senior team manager.

As of time being, there will be no further comment.

Adnan Suliaha and Katiri Hedge announces that they will step down as head coaches; PFFA launches open application for Poafmersia's 2nd national team manager
Fisakadaha City - Following Poafmersia's 2-0 loss in Kandorith for the second stage of the playoffs, the current head coaches of the National Team have announced that they would be stepping down as head coaches of the national team, and that the PFFA will be launching an open application to find their replacements.

Speaking at a post-match press conference, held after the team returned to Poafmersia, head coach Adnan Suliaha and Katiri Hedge made the bombshell announcement after taking a series of questions from the awaiting reporters, leaving everyone in the room in shock. The coaches, however, said that this was not a decision that was made in the short span of time, they added that this was a decision made "in advance", with prior discussion to PFFA officials and leadership. "I have helmed this position for 20 whole years," said Adnan Suliaha. "During this time, I have brought this team through 10 cycles of World Cup Qualification. We have made it to the Proper twice, and then experienced a dip in performance following the retirement of the golden generation, and then, now this younger team is starting to go on an upward trend once again. I believe that the promise that I have made 20 years ago, when I informed all of Poafmersia that we were going to start a national team for football, has been fulfilled, and it is time for another manager to inject fresh ideas and new blood into this national team structure."

Assistant coach Katiri Hedge confirms this would be his retirement notice, adding that he has no interest in being part of the coaching team set-up for the next generation of managers. "I am in my 70s right now. When I agreed to be Adnan's assistant, I thought I would be done after 10 years. I never expected to be with Adnan for 20 whole years, and I am glad to have been able to bring Poafmersia some international glories. Everyone remember the time when we won back-to-back IACs, others will think about us and how we managed to give Poafmersia 2 straight knockout appearances in the World Cup Proper. At this stage, at the anniversary of 20 years of international football, I think it is a good time for us to step down."

When asked by reporters, Adnan Suliaha said that he had no plans about his future, however, he added that his retirement was always going to come. "We had an agreement, the exact time depended on our performance in the Qualifiers and the Proper. We told the Board of Directors that we were planning to step down after the end of the Qualifiers anyways, and that was taken as the default unless the team got into the Proper, in which case, we would still make this announcement, but delay the step-down process till the last Proper game that the Red Panjias are playing."

The Football Association also released a statement, thanking both coaches for their time and support as national team coach, and that the Football Association would be taking applications from everyone, Poafmer or otherwise, who have decent managerial experience, to take over as manager of the Red Panjias.

OOC: Post made with Huayramarca's permission and encouragement.

IAQ manager Ruben Condori found dead, age 64, after WC93 qualification play-off loss

~

RENEEGRAD, JOONGYEONG FEDERAL PROVINCE - Quebeco-Huayramarcan football manager Ruben Condori is reported to have passed after jumping from the top floor of the Reneegrad Septentrionale Hotel just 500m away from The Reneegrad national stadium early this evening.

While the Royal Quebecois Police refused to specify the deceased's name, they did confirm that a man with both Quebecois and Huayramarcan passport, with a surname Condori, had leapt from the 12th floor of the hotel room that is traditionally delegated for the coaching staff of the Independent Athletes from Quebec senior team. The RQP also specified that they have found a note during their search of the deceased's bedroom, stating 'apologies for unforgivable performance.' It is speculated that Condori made his way back to his hotel after the Grim Reapers' 2-2 draw to Pasarga on the home-leg of the qualification stage, which had triggered the Quebecois elimination from the World Cup 93.

Once the darling of Huayramarcan football, Condori, age 64, had served as a longtime assistant of renowned Huayramarcan manager Omar Caicedo. In a tandem they had served together for twenty-five years, winning four national titles with Beyreuth University of the Quebecois Intercollegiate Sports (QIS), before moving onto a twelve-year stint as the associate manager for the emerging Huayramarcan national team.

Since taking up the Quebecois national team position after the departure of Lükækš Væñøœrëñbérghüïś for medical reasons, , he had put together an average managerial performance in what would be his first and only stint as a senior football team manager. In two cycles the Independent Athletes from Quebec side had put together average performance, qualifying for one out of two World Cups he had managed.

As a proponent of hyper-pressing philosophy, Condori's reserved demeanour as a technician had set him a noticeable figure in the eyes of his peers and players. Sticking true to his players, he would be best remembered for winning seven consecutive qualification games, including two play-off games, to qualify into the World Cup 92 on a historical comeback, as well as 12-game undefeated streak to finish the first qualification stage of the World Cup 93.

In the immediate moments after the news release, the RQFA issued a brief statement stating that 'Ruben Condori will be missed.' With the RQFA Reneegrad complex currently short-staffed, due to a mix of ambulances and police vehicles that have been sent to the building following multiple, conflicting reports have been sent out. It is to be noted, however, that the statements held little ring considering the public sentiments following their lacklustre performance against Harry Islands, Yakk, Ochre Islands and Geektopia.

DOES LA SQUADRA NEED THE HARMONY TO CONQUER THE WORLD?

Image
Every single one of gli attaccanti's world cup qualifications have come right after after a podium finish at the Cup of Harmony

How could one possibly think about the team's successful world cup qualifications without mentioning the team's relative success in the Cup of Harmony just before that? It truly is a mesmerising ride to look at la squadra's entire history, although one plagued by the Pandemic for its majority. There have been semblances of the potential of the team that every Juven person knows and loves showing in some qualifying stages, such as this one, or the ones of cycles 80 and 82 where the team managed to qualify to the world cup right after a successful Cup of Harmony campaign.

There have been 3 instances on which the team has had a deep enough Cup of Harmony run, with its 3 podium finishes coming off of 3 very deep and mostly dominant runs. The first one is Cup of Harmony 71, played during the cycle of 79, the team's 3rd cycle. There, gli attaccanti showed its prowess in a run filled with upsets, defeating Mercedini, Flardania(then ranked 21st in the world!!!), Apox as well as then seemingly rising stars New Gazi on its way to the final. Being on the final itself was a major upset for a team not exactly known as strong, a team that had even struggled in its Baptism of Fire campaign and first Cup of Harmony appearance just two years prior. The team itself had not even won its games in the dominant fashion that it is winning now and most of them were not even high-scoring with the majority of the games having gli attaccanti scoring 2 goals, with the highest scoring one being a 3-1 victory against Filindostan in the group stages. The final itself against the stallions of Saltstead was a dramatic one, with no goals scored throught the 120 minutes of the game, it seemed as if the stallions had pushed la squadra to a corner. This is what they would have anyone think at least as the team would win 4-3 in the penalties after Craabshaas' penalty would be saved by the legendary Bulgari, sending the team to cloud 9.

The following cycle was cycle of 80. And that was the first ever cycle ingrained in the hearts of many Juven. Simply put, up until then no qualifications stages had been as interesting to follow through for an average fan than those. For the most part it would yo-yo between the 2nd and 4th places of the group, managing important wins against new rivals Sargossa away, while losing at home and standing its ground against would-be champions Brenecia, even defeating them away in one of the most exciting performances the gli attaccanti has displayed. It also managed to choke against competition that had not performed so good, such as North New South Wales, which managed to get the best of it both home and away and almost managing to make la squadra choke. La squadra finished 3rd, clinching a playoff spot for the first time ever. In the playoffs, they would be facing Super-Llamaland, a team which nowadays is more renown for its baseball, however back then possessed an extremely strong national football team. After two high-scoring games which saw la squadra score 8 in two games over its opposition(with a 6-8 aggregate), they managed to clinch their first qualification to a world cup. An insane achievement by Toset, one that had not been matched until today. In the world cup proper itself, the team did not manage to get a single victory over the likes of Ethane, Farfadillis or Turori.(relevant later)

The cycle 81 qualifiers campaign is not exactly to be forgotten. The team had entered strongly, but been pitied in a group against a Cosumar side that was at peak strength. The team had managed to go on a 13-game undefeated streak(ring a bell?) and it would only be stopped by a surprise defeat to Anollasia. But, due to the fact that it had tied a lot instead of earning victories to get the points necessary, Cosumar outclassed la squadra and finished first. In the playoffs, a defeat to Audioslavia(will be relevant later) with a 6-3 scoreline and 7-4 on aggregate would send the team to the Cup of Harmony 73. There, all hell would break loose... or so the fanbase thought. A 2-1 victory over Krytenia on the premiere of the competition was really invigorating for the team. One would think they would follow it through against East Belz- oh no, it was a goalless draw. The campaign was in jeopardy since the next matchday was to be played against Qusmo, which had defeated both East Belzaria and Krytenia. A high-scoring 4-3 defeat followed(relevant later) but by a stroke of luck, Krytenia and East Belzaria had managed to hold each other to a draw and as such la squadra got to be in the knockouts. Now that is where all hell actually broke loose, cruising through Taeshan 4-1, scraping a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Mytanija and that is where it got really spicy. They would be meeting group-mates Qusmo in the semi-final. The sour taste of the group stages defeat had not really left the mouths of the players and that game got to be quite the affair. While the first half got to be quiet, engines started working on the second half and la squadra would get a 3-1 revenge victory(relevant later) to punch a ticket for the second straight(participations-wise) Cup of Harmony final. There they would be facing... Tinhampton. Relative unknowns until then, but they would certainly give Juven football its biggest heartbreak to date. The final would end in an 1-2 scoreline in favor of the small nation, bringing Juvencus to its knees and giving it a reality check.

That is giving us the right to enter cycle 82, the first hints of the Pandemic would be hitting the nation then without anyone really knowing or noticing. Despite an opening matchday defeat to Baranil, defeating only credible rival South Covello right after started an obvious race of who would top the group. With two spots on the line it also became increasingly clear that the Juvencus/South Covello race was more of a demonstration of each team's power and prowess rather than clinching the spots needed, which they did really early on and with a big difference as New Lusitania, the closest team to either side(as they had both finished with 39 points, equalling the top spot in the group) was 9 points away. In the world cup itself, a surprise set of ties against Vilita and Mercedini were followed by disappointment as the Equestrian States gave the team yet another heartbreak on matchday 3 of the group stages with a 0-1 defeat.

Fast forward after a tense Pandemic period, the team's downfall to a perennial middle of the pack side, Toset's quitting, and mafia-controlling and sudden "disappearance" of players and managers over disappointing performances we enter... cycle 92. Madeiros had been given a chance to develop the team over a longer stretch of time, certainly longer than De Casio owing perhaps due to his legend status. In cycle 91, the team had failed at the last hurdle, losing to Saint Eleanor but cycle 92 seemed to be more disappointing. The team just could not get those upset victories it was so used to getting and punching above its weight for a middle of the pack team. However it was a recent trend that revenge-winning was a thing and victories over Savojarna and Turori in recent cycles had showed enough of that revenge winning mentality. It did not go as planned in the qualification stages however, defeating neither Chromatika or Ko-oren or any higher-ranked competition for that matter, including Brookstation(relevant later). Punching a ticket to the Cup of Harmony came by chance as Juvencus was one of the last teams thought to be given the chance to participate.

Cup of Harmony as an enviroment has changed a lot over the years, it certainly feels like a more competitive competition nowadays and 84 was no different. The team would be playing its games in Ceni, a nation known for its largely bisexual population and generally tolerant attitude towards things considered more... taboo by some back at home. An 1-0 defeat to Cap Nord due to silly referee decisions(as well as rough luck) gave rise to havoc and chaos caused by the Juven fans, hurling racist, homophobic, outright shocking and species-phobic chants in the following games against Ceni, Bears Armed and to a lesser extent Yuezhou(relevant later). For some reason, this reckless fan behavior and outrage also translated into a string of high-scoring, exciting winning performances. The fans would eventually be mostly silenced in the following matchdays, the same could not be said about la squadra. Mercedini would be put in its place in the round of 16, followed by an extra time victory against qualifying stage rivals Gnejs. The semi-final was a rematch of the group stages, Juvencus vs Yuezhou. It was an exciting matchday, to say the least, but gli attaccanti would not be as dominant as back in the group stages and the Yueren would outclass them in the mentality department and get the victory. That is not to say that the 3rd place playoff match was not important, as it was against Audioslavia. Audioslavia had defeated the team in an important playoffs stage for entry at the world cup proper all these years prior. This was not a game to be joked about, for the Audioslavians, it was a game to give RJ Styrn a goodbye, for the Juven, it was all about getting that revenge is sweet moment all those years later. And as if the stars had aligned properly, gli attaccanti managed to get a 4-2 victory and at least get 3rd place and end its cycle 92 campaign with its heads up.

But this was not to be over yet...

Cycle 93, yes, this cycle. Juvencus had come off the back of great campaigns in the Cup of Harmony and Independents Cup(managing a victory against Drawkland, in the 3rd-place playoffs, relevant later). Truthfully, the team was sitting at its highest ever place since the pandemic and one of the highest rankings the team has ever managed to reach, rank 38 in the multiverse. Sonnel was not just an one power, one follower nation region anymore and Juvencus would be looking to prove that against... well, Drawkland as well as Nyowani Kitara and by serendipitous circumstances Brookstation and Ethane, both sides la squadra had failed to defeat in the past up until that point. If the reader has not been living under a rock for the past few months, it is common knowledge that despite the disastrous starting games against Saterun, Nyowani Kitara and Drawkland(even losing 1-3 to the Corps at Gianluca IV stadium), the team would go on a massive undefeated streak for 19 whole matchdays(and that could extend in this world cup) and clinch first place. Nyowani Kitara would not be spared at the Nuovo Stadio Olimpico, being sent packing with a 3-0 scoreline, revenge victories would be a common theme, as Brookstation and Ethane would both be defeated in both legs of the competition, crashing them both 1-4 away, while the home stretch would see la squadra beat Ethane 4-2 and scraping a 2-1 victory over Brookstation. This would be the first cycle the team would top its group and only the 2nd time that gli attaccanti get direct qualification to the world cup. As for the world cup proper... we just have to find out. But one thing is for certain, la squadra has come to stay and by being the best-performing team in the qualifiers(with the highest points, second-highest scoring and best goals difference) it has a message to send.

But this brings us back to the original question? Does la squadra need harmony to qualify for the world cup or even perhaps perform well in it? And for that the answer is a fairly resounding yes, but not the harmony that one may think. The performances in the Cup of Harmony surely have helped in developing a stronger mentality in a stage that still matters, however the harmony that this team seeks and that Madeiros has certainly given is the one within the bounds of the mind. While Toset wanted mentality monsters, cold to the touch and unable to feel, following managers turned into guilt and pressure for a team that was not there yet. Madeiros has given the team the one thing that is needed most and that is harmony within the mind to have harmony in its play and the team has certainly lived up to its name of gli attaccanti under his guise. 69 goals in 22 matchdays for an average of 3.1 goals per matchday is no joke and god willing, this will be translated into even better performances both in this world cup and the world cups to come. Should this harmony be maintained, we are talking about a future contender and not just a pretender like the team has been for quite a big chunk of its history. So all in all, fair props to the Cup of Harmony where its due, but it has always been the harmony within. With that said, il Scudelliano would like to wish la squadra good luck for its first world cup participation in 11 years, may god be with you and may goals rain like a typical Scudelliano thunderstorm.

Boot It!: Playoff V, Pt 2 - We Are Now Streaking

Postby TJUN-ia » Mon Mar 06, 2023 9:39 am

By Peter Davis

After we absolutely crushed it in the 1st leg, the Jaguars of TJUN-ia knew that only a monumental fuck up would see them crumble and fall to the wayside against Eraman...but no one was ruling it out either. Before our playoff triumph against Sendhang 2 years ago, TJUN-ia's playoff history was one that was just horrible to look at, featuring both blowouts and daggers at the death and everything in between, so you could understand that despite the 3 goals advantage we held, no one was booking their tickets to the World Cup just yet. Li Xiu Ying would be in control on her own for the final time no matter what happened here, as David Seems will be joining her side while their daughter is old enough to be taken care of by relatives under TJUN-ian law (1-year maternity, 1-year paternity (if hetero, we don't judge) and then anyone else can take care of them if they wish), but she knew that she would very her very best to avoid a collapse no matter what.

And so, the Monkey Kings entered the National Stadium needing to pull off a shocker but you could tell that Agung Suryanantha was going to give it all no matter what, and a very even duel would take place in the JagBase tonight. The visitors would take the lead through Era Hitam in the 31st, but we would claw one back thanks to Malhrani al-Kalhrani before the 1st half was over. That helped settle the mood on our side of the pitch and when substitute Regina McDuff headed home a 2nd in the 67th, you could hear all the corks being popped from here. Serigala Rudra would add a consolation, but that would be that. Li Xiu Ying and the coaching staff would shake hands with Suryanantha whilst the crowd stormed the pitch to celebrate with their heroes. Ladies and Gentlemen and those in other categories, we are streaking.
TJUN-ia has made their 3rd World Cup, their 2nd on the bounce.
We have a qualification streak for the very first time...and it feels so fucking good.
The draw is to come soon...and then we will return to the big dance.
We reached the knockouts last time. Can we do so again as a Pot 3 team?

Baker Park rolls seven to win crapshoot
Scott McRae
The Daily Mail Chief Soccer Writer

It certainly wasn't lost on anyone who witnessed the aftermath of the 4-3 victory at the BBP National Stadium by Baker Park over Drawkland to close out the playoff in the World Cup 93 Qualifiers that the celebration on the pitch was far out of character for the National Team in the mixed gender era; even in championship winning tournaments the playing squad had never hoisted a manager up and tossed them in the air in unbridled joy as this group did to Jennifer Prescott (and the rest of coaching staff as well, one after another) after securing their 12th straight berth in the Finals via qualification in competition—and 14th overall—against what seemed like the longest of odds with 2/3 of the campaign completed.

Rarely has it been noted here or in foreign media that when the Commonwealth have their backs to the wall, when the team need to come up with a result that will get them off the hook, more often than not they get a performance from an individual or a collective effort that cannot just be explained away as luck; the argument could be made that this particular cycle required a lot things to fall into place exactly as they did just for them to get into a position to be a playoff side.
Of course BP have crashed and burned out of competitions in ways that could easily disprove this theory but taken as part of body of evidence, it's probably safe to say it's a four in five chance the Gold & Black will do the business when the metaphorical money is on the table.

They have now survived a two-legged playoff for one third of their qualifying attempts and continue to be one of the multiverse's most formidable away sides in WCQ, winning 76 and drawing 24 while only losing 17 in 117 matches (playoffs included). Whether the immediate result has been validation for the lengthy tear down and renovation of the entire structure of Baker Park's once vaunted “BP System”, only time will tell; Prescott exuded a confidence over the final few matchdays and the entirety of the home & away series with the Elite Eleven that she either was pleased with the end result or finally discovered the 'thing' she'd been looking for since the final whistle against Nephara at Tropicorp Park on the final group stage matchday in World Cup 92.

During the run-in over the last few Group 13 matches, Prescott reached milestones that didn't get much attention in the focus on finishing strong to make the playoff; her 150th career victory against Montana Verde in Belle Haven and her 250th match in charge in the home finale against Raspotochje at the CONAGCO Stadium in Shirley are testament to her longevity and success.
She's been in charge of 25% of the matches played in the history of the Baker Park National Team since 1934, winning the nation's first ever senior trophy at AOCAF 62 and part of the first ever trophy winning side at SWC 5; she has taken the strengths of each of her predecessors—Trevor Richmond's ability to keep the big picture in mind and his organization; Pam Scott's belief in letting talent show itself and being open to tactical change as needed; and Ichi Tuzzio's player management style emphasizing self-belief and his willingness to live with the consequences of player errors of commission—and married them to her own ideas developed through her experiences from her start as a part-time youth development instructor.

Asked about her impromptu flight, the manager beamed at the memory fresh in her mind.
“Absolutely terrified because I was sure they were going to drop me. (laughter) I've never experienced anything like that, it's almost like an out of body experience, because you see the faces then you just see the horizon and you're back down in a second. I didn't realize you're supposed to wave your arms until they had Tony and Hailey up there. (laughs)”

Prescott said the decision to wear the classic 'Ghost Whites' was a squad choice, but she sprung the surprise of black socks of her own accord.
“I asked the kit staff if we had black socks on hand, had we ever worn black before. We had an unopened box of 50 pairs, I guess we'd sent the 21's off once with them and I said to lay those out. We did black shorts in the regional (AOCAF 62), so why not?”

Serena McDavid had less interest in her 3 goals over the two match tie—which gave her the team lead in scoring for qualifications—than she was about the overall team effort.
“When you come into the squad for the first time as a cappie, it's stressed so much that we are all part of a...like a living organism. A hive! We're Bees, we work together for the good of the hive. (laughs) I guess Jen is the Queen and the rest of us are supposed to fulfill our duties. (laugh) No, that's not true at all. I'd say in my mind, the shirt, the colors...that's the Queen that we work for.
Back when I'd been in the squad for awhile, Ayana (West) said to me one day in training something I've never forgotten. 'You're gonna be the boss someday, up at the top with AB and me and Patty [Sabrina Patton]* but remember that a hat trick in a loss means nothing but an assist or even not scoring in a win means everything' and she of course is right”

The FAC will await the draw for the 32 team Finals to be held in Chromatika and Tumbra, with General Secretary Allison LeFleur attending in person for the first time, where they will be in the 3rd pot once again, exposed to the competition in the top two pots that include 15 of the 16 top ranked sides, with the Anomalies ranked at 18 the outlier.

Princess Mila (naked) for Naked News Jeruselem and Faye Swift, Jeruselem World Cup Manager at the training facility

Mila: Hello, this is Princess Mila once again reporting for Naked News Jeruselem about the World Cup 93. We've qualified and we're in the finals again! With me is the architect of our successful campaign so far, Faye Swift who's first attempt to qualify has been successful.
Faye: Oh hey everyone
Mila: The group draw for the World Cup 93 has been done and all 32 teams have their place in finals. This includes the two hosts Chromatika and Tumbra who automatically qualify for the finals because they are the hosts. We've been placed in Group E, and well we got thrown in with one of the hosts.
Faye: I'm not complaining, playing Chromatika is preferable to some of the alternative teams we could be facing
Mila: Yes in Group E is host Chromatika, but also Savigliane and Tjun-ia. Chromatika are ranked 18th, Savigliane 14th and Tjun-ia 26th. Jeruselem are lowest ranked at 40th.
Faye: Actually we got off lightly, compared to some other groups

Mila: Well YueZhou, ranked 39th got into Group C - with Banija ranked 3rd, Squornshelan something something 11th and Ko-oren 17th. I mean compare that to our group.
Faye: Doesn't mean it's going be difficult getting out of the group stage, as all teams in this cup aren't making up numbers. The two hosts are ranked in the top 20.
Mila: Chromatika are one of the hosts so we can't judge their form on the field as they didn't need play in the qualifiers.
Faye: They have home ground advantage, that counts for a lot.
Mila: Savigliane won group 14 to qualify directly, with a 16-4-2 record. Only two losses and yikes a plus 35 goal difference. Jeruselem could only manage plus 23.
Faye: Definitely a team which could destroy a team who aren't defending properly.

Mila: Tjun-ia was 2nd in Group 6 with a 15-2-5 record. Although they conceded 36 goals, which is a lot ... they scored 66. Another offensive minded team. They won the playoffs with 6-3 aggregate over Eraman.
Faye: Yes, we're not the best team for scoring and we're already facing two offense minded teams. I'm not sure about Chromatika.
Mila: We could get some high scoring games in Group E
Faye: The plus with teams who teams like that is that they do let in more goals than normal, it's just stopping them scoring more than you.
Mila: So how does one stop the opposition scoring?
Faye: It's all about controlling possession. If you control the ball, they don't and they have less time to score. We're the best scoring team by any means but our game isn't about flooding the opposition half. All you have to do is score more goals than them.

Mila: Are you going change the way you approach the finals from the qualifiers?
Faye: Eh no, I'm a creature of habit. I pretty much do things the same way, even if it's probably not totally correct ... but it's better than doing lots of different stuff and not figuring out what works and doesn't.
Mila: Far less room for error this time round
Faye: Yes well, only three games. Optimally win 3 games but in most cases, winning two of three gets one into the next round.
Mila: Pekora Dancer did get us into the quarter finals once, can you repeat that?
Faye: Well, getting into the 2nd round is going be hard as it is. I can't promise even that.

Mila: Now, you've never played a game of football in your life?
Faye: No, I'm a clumsy idiot with no coordination.
Mila: And the kids?
Faye: My son is more athletic but my daughter isn't exactly gifted with physical attributes like me. She's a bit of a chatterbox though, like ... you.
Mila: It's rare a non-football person actually runs a football team
Faye: My predecessor Kate Dallas, not Princess Kate which is your Mum, was a football person. But then Pekora Dancer wasn't so it just proves being a football manager - you don't need have been a player. It's a really just another management position, all you need is someone who can manage people.

Mila: Would you go back to teaching?
Faye: Err, no. I need work that pays a lot more ...
Mila: Would you recommend football management as a job now that you've gotten the best football job in Jeruselem?
Faye: It's not for everyone. I mean apart from dealing with bureacrats back home here, if you're managing a World Cup ... you have deal with bureacrats from other countries as well. Yes, the Jeruselem FA do a lot of the work with the International aspects but there's things you must manage yourself. So if you can't actually deal with people, do something else.
Mila: What's the main thing about team management?
Faye: Everyone is different. All your players are different and so is everyone you deal with. Never assume anything, expect the unexpected.

Mila: That because you're a teacher and you had to deal with a class of unpredictable kids
Faye: It's no different when dealing with adults really, it's just kids are little more honest while adults harbour their own agendas.
Mila: Well, that's all we have time for today! Jeruselem in the World Cup 93 finals group E with hosts Chromatika and Savigliane and Tjun-ia.
Faye: I'm sure my kids are watching this ...
Mila: We're a family show, mostly. Even Dads watch this show.
Faye: I wonder why ... and it's nothing to do with actual football.

Mila: It's our charming hosts hey!

Delte 3-2 Xanneria (aggregate 5-3)
Sports Correspondent Kim Samrodd at Ildemorton Road for the Oswark Parish Advertiser
I won't dwell overly long on the finer details of this match, but certainly mention should be made of the stubborn Representatives resistance in the face of a late furious onslaught, refusing to give in to the temptation to throw it all away and snatch humiliation from the jaws of delight. Which is a roundabout way of saying we qualified for the World Cup finals in Tumbra and/or Chromatika, and must now figure out how to most successfully apply the skills we have learned in the last nine months or so since we first signed up to World Cup 91, so that we only lose our three group stage matches by a small to medium margin.

Let Them Eat Turnips!
Junior Pencil Sharpener & Political Editor Polka Lunn at the Women's Institute in Rake Teinton for the Shingarter Herald
Exclusive Content: The WhatsUp Scandal

It's all coming out now. Controversy is never very far away these days where the local WI is concerned, and more leaked WhatsUp messages have put Old Wives Gala Queen Betty Ormray in hot water as The Shingarter Herald exclusively reveals the depth of her secret contempt for the residents of Rake Teinton council estate. She has been caught responding cruelly to concerns from village greengrocer Elmore Tack that a perfect storm of poor weather abroad, staff shortages at the docks and uncertainty over rising fuel costs has lead to a shortage of imported truffles, bonnottes, hop shoots, pink lettuce and saffron stamens. "Let them eat turnips," she said, possibly adding some less interesting stuff for context around local fresh produce that is harder to wrap up in a provocative headline. Known to shop out of town at the rather fancy Shingarter Exotic Spice Shop & Deli, and to use a lot of exotic spice shots in her WI curry nights, it seems she doesn't care so much about the locals who can't get to Shingarter now the number 38 bus service has been suspended.

"It's alright for her," said a local who wishes to remain anonymous for fear of a backlash at the next Mother's Meeting, "she's got a double-sized allotment you know, since poor old Selma passed and donated her vegetable plot to the WI. They look after themselves first, that lot!"

The Remote Video Assistant Coach
1/4 : A Shot At Glory
A World Cup Special Series

It was probably inevitable that an argument would break out when - if - The Representative team of the Delte Valley ever qualified for the World Cup finals. Even in the stoic community where arguments hardly never broke out at all. Ever.

Initially it was decided that since the Away Team Mission were already out and about in the world, having spent most of January and February flying around from one region to another on the qualification campaign, and having done so well at it too with only one defeat in twelve, they may as well stay out for a couple more weeks and have a tilt at not getting thrashed in Tumbra and/or Chromatika. Of course, every day they were away from the valley, they were piling on the days, weeks and months in accelerated ageing, due to the Far Faraway Syndrome. But probably a few more days in the far faraway wouldn't kill them. Hopefully.

But then, of course, there was the Home Team. They were banned from travelling now having done their stint on the road in previous competitions. They had also done pretty well in the qualification home matches, also only losing one in twelve. It didn't seem entirely fair on them, they said, that they would not be permitted to travel for their just rewards of a shot at glory and more likely the chance for a post-match shirt exchange with a pot-1 superstar. Especially as they were all prepared to sacrifice a few years of their later life for a trip to Esportiva. Or even the Outer Ao.

What with the promising results coming from Dr. Orem Ustingham's studies in the Hyper-Gerontological Research Unit at Saint Skolda’s Hospital, and the remarkable revival properties of Deltic spring water up north in the Garga Marshes, not to mention - though I'm about to - a strong sense of fair play in the community, it seemed only right to temporarily overturn the travel ban and permit the heroes of the home team to join their red-shirt colleagues and take a lifetime's opportunity to possibly not lose one of the three group matches of the World Cup Proper. Arrangements were made to suspend a part of the constitution so that Coach Enda Clentin could pick his best players for the trip.

"I'm not going," said coach Clentin, "nuh-uh, no way. Nope. Not doing it."

Boot It!: New Opponents In An Interesting Group

Postby TJUN-ia » Fri Mar 10, 2023 5:26 am

After Eraman were swept to the side at home, the Jaguars of TJUN-ia are back in the big time - a 3rd WC in 4 cycles, a 2nd on the bounce. It certainly felt good to feel like a consistent WC team for the first time in our history, but everyone knew that the Group Stage will be tough no matter who we ended up with in the draw. Li Xiu Ying certainly did us well to get us here and with David Seems back in co-command, there is undoubtedly a sense around this team that they will be as ready as possible for the tasks. But what are these tasks and how will they impact this 3rd WC year?

MD1: vs Jeruselem (40/Pot 4)
Ah yes, Jeruselem - the Princesses, who certainly have a "distinctive look" and are certainly "unforgettable" from the moment you are scheduled to play them and have to deal with the "quality entertainment" known as Naked News Jeruselem. Faye Swift runs a pretty simple set-up, +2 in a 4-4-2, but it was good enough to beat Kandorith to the Group 8 crown by Head-to-Head alone. We've only played them thrice in our history, 2 of which came from our baby steps at WC84 and the other being a 2-0 win at CoH77 during the WC85 cycle, the first cycle with the Galarians involved in our setup. So yeah, it has been a long ass time since we played them and now, we must play them at a World Cup...funny how things work out sometimes.

MD2: vs Savigliane (14/Pot 2)
It is wacky to see the Pot 2 team actually be ranked higher than the Pot 1 side, but that's the situation we find ourselves in with Savigliane being drawn to this group. We have never, I mean NEVER, played these guys before but apparently, MD2 will see us face "the best Savigliano football has ever been" just before a portal back to their original dimension may wipe them from the U3 reality forever...but we don't really fucking know what's going on with that one. All we can focus on is that this is their 4th WC on the bounce with The Swans coached by Ichi Tuzzio and his +4.3 in a 3-4-3 system. They beat Milchama, the team who wiped Kimi-Suomi back to the CoH, by only 1 point with a GD of +35. Simply put, they will be a threat...and getting something from the intact Swans may end up being critical to our progression dreams.

MD3: vs Chromatika (18/Pot 1/Co-host)
Finally, the co-hosts...one of them, of course. Due to the fact our last 2 WC appearances both saw Tumbra in our group, many back in The North Pacific were shocked that we didn't end up in Group A alongside the Black Eagles. Instead, we ended up in Group E alongside the other Co-host in the form of the Chromatika Anomalies. Obviously, they didn't take part in the Qualification process like the rest of us mere mortals, but they are still a team to be feared with their +2.5 in a 3-5-2 or 3-4-1-2 that is employed by Lev Repin. The last time we faced this team? CoH83, 4 years ago in fact, in which we managed a 1-1 draw. The only time before that? Our debut WCQ playoff appearance in WC86, in which they won 6-4 on aggregate. We certainly feel closer to them than we ever have before...but facing the hosts will be tough no matter what.

Three interesting opponents, representing the past (Jeru) and present (Chrom) and even the future (SVG) of our overarching quest to be considered "competitive" by WC100. The pieces are all in place for an interesting WC where our ranking is battling our prospects to reach the knockouts again...but which will come out on top? The Princesses may tell us a lot. GO JAGS!

WC93 Schedule (Group E, Chromatika)
MD1: vs Jeruselem (40)
MD2: vs Savigliane (14)
MD3: vs Chromatika (18)

World Cup 93 Preview: Group B

Ahead of Flavovespia's 3rd World Cup appearance, let's take a look at the 3 opponents in Group B, and some thoughts on them all.

Image

Twice winners, as recently as World Cup 87, twice runners up, and twice third place, Nephara are a side with an enviable record, and one of the powerhouses of the game. In their 25th appearance in the Finals, they’ll certainly expect to progress out of the group stages, and as the 9th ranked side in the World, could well make a run in the knock out stages. Only once have Flavovespia met Nephara, in World Cup 91. It was a 1-0 win to Nephara on that occasion, so Flavovespia will be keen for a better result this time.

Nephara’s manager Igrene Cantor has World Cup winning experience both on the pitch and on the dugout, but will nonetheless still feel the pressure to deliver. Nepharan football can be beautiful yet brutal, expect plenty of slick passing, fast flowing football and direct play, but also expect elbows out, quite literally, and some cynical gamesmanship. A high pressing side, the key for Flavovespia will be to match them in strength, not let a lack of pressure get to them, and strike on the counter. Key players include Felixe Vetiver (who scored against Flavovespia), with her brilliant goal scoriing record. Medusa Strand in goal is tough to score against, and could be very important at the back.

Image

Græntfjall may only have 5 World Cup appearances, all consecutive from World Cup 89, but they’ve had great success in that time, winning World Cup 91. Flavovespia have played Græntfjall once before, in Cup of Harmony 80. There, Græntfjall defeated Flavovespia 0-2, en route to winning that Cup of Harmony. Those who still remember that match will hope the result falls differently. However against the 5th ranked side in the world, it’ll be a tough ask for Flavovespia to take points out of the game. Græntfjall with their ranking could really consider themselves one of the teams who can realistically dream of going all the way. Given how they cruised through Group 5 of Qualifying, they’ve laid down a marker.

Græntfjall football has a reputaiton for high athleticism, good discipline, and strong efforts. Their mountainous sized centre backs and central players were famed of the past, although that stereotype is somewhat fading. A 4-3-3 formation, much like Flavovespia, means these teams will go up against each other with a similar style. Sara Kristoffersdóttir is a star on the left wing, both in domestic and international matches. Kæja Finnvarðsdóttir is dynamic in midfield, linking up to the attack. Eyvar Mathiasson and Asbjørn Vilbjörnsson make one of the world’s most formidable defensive centre back pairings.

Image

Twice runners up, although back in World Cup 34 and World Cup 39, and onto their 27th World Cup appearance, Milchama are no strangers to the World Cup. The opening opponent for Flavovespia, Milchama will be new opposition and potentially a pivotal opponent if either side are to usurp a knockout spot from Nephara and Græntfjall. Milchama were 2nd in Group 14 behind Savigliane, and after a 1-1 draw in Kimi-Suomi, came through with a 4-1 win to qualify for the World Cup. Ranked 28th, just 5 spots above Flavovespia, the game between the two sides could well be a close one.

Milchama play an attacking 3-3-4 formation, so goals could well be plentiful in the opener. Manager Darryl Lamarein has an unconventional background, originally an accountant before taking over a third tier side, and taking them to the top flight. In the squad, Millie Kouriea and Marc K. Floren have linked up well domestically, and seem set to continue that internationally. Cal Kemet is a dynamic midfielder who can cover so much of the pitch. Theo Elkenstall is a defender with the ability to play killer balls into the box, and in goal, Morc Entersher is particularly famed.

A summary of all of the groups below:

MATCHDAY! Magazine World Cup Previews — Farfadillis

ImageFarfadillis
Previous Appearances: 28 First/Latest Appearance: 63/92 Best Result: Champions (84)
Manager: Lele Manguele Key Player: Ígnîgo Çí Xôrí
vs Tumbra: Matchday 1 @ Straton

THE KITCHEN SINK, AND THEN SOME is how some would choose to describe the Farf way of playing football; relentless attacking, from the first all the way to the final whistle. It's a style that's brought them quite a bit of success — one World Cup title, brought to them by Xíxì Êns, Oskar Holsteiner and Faragó rue Cazade, is the highlight of their sojourn into World Cup competitions. While inter-ethnic tensions have begun a war that's garnered mixed to loud responses from around the globe — who's really surprised that the island known for splintering into nine, held together by a football team, is fighting against itself again? — the football team has, somewhat mercifully, appeared to remain above the fighting and focused on the football. And what good football it's been; despite struggling to hold on to first place in their group, chasing down Sargossa and then Huayramarca, only gaining an automatic berth on the twentieth day of qualifying, they've still held on to their crown of "highest number of goals scored." Which really about sums up the Farf approach to football.

Ígnîgo Çí Xôrí, destined to enter the Farf hall of legends alongside names like Êns and rue Cazade, is probably the most fearsome member of this squad, even if he is nearly forty and is mostly deployed at the foot of the midfield; but pretty much everyone on this squad is dangerous offensively in some way or another. Denes Robineau, starting striker, is quickly shaping up to be the new Êns and then some more; Lêyêló Jáánsêlà, playing in the "free" takilante role pioneered by the team, is another to be looked out for even if he
is only 20.

Expect pace and power to be deployed here as Manguele's hyper-offensive squad looks set to be countered by Yuan's wingbacks. The opening match of the World Cup will likely set the tone for the team's entire campaign; last cycle's dull and placid 1-1 draw against Baker Park eventually seemed to set the tone for the rest of it, as the team slumped out against Tjun-ia. Win, and the team can be much more confident as it faces off against old nemeses Brenecia and new names Delte; lose, and it provides a springboard for a massive rally to come back for the other two matches, even if the team will be flirting with yet another early elimination.

TUMBRA LINEUP FOR WORLD CUP 93, MATCH 1: VS FARFADILLIS
TMB (4-2-3-1): 1 - Nick Barker; 18 - Annie Renton, 4 - Stephen Kerr, 20 - Wendy Pritchett, 19 - James Green; 6 - Trudy Harrison, 8 - Vincent Hicks, 10 - Phil Cole; 7 - Valerie Wells, 9 - Lynne Crossley; 11 - Nick Riordan

Seven months before the World Cup

"Robin?"

"Yes, dear?" murmured the half-awake footballer, splayed across the king-sized bed. Curiously, for someone who was basically the face of Tumbran football, Robin Vaughn was loath to keep up on his appearance; he hadn't shaved his stubble throughout the previous few days, and the beginnings of a beard were beginning to show. Privately, Miriam Vaughn thought, she thought it looked fetching; but his sponsors would never approve. The Connacht Razor Company would never be caught dead sponsoring a footballer with stubble, even if he was, well, Tumbra's most famous football player.

"It's the big day," she whispered softly, pulling herself up, while pulling the blankets off her husband.

"Bollocks to it," he groaned, pulling the duvet back over himself. "It's early."

"It's eight o'clock."

"Yeah, and the thing starts in Straton at one."

"The train leaves at ten. You need to be in Straton by twelve. Get. Up." She yanked the duvet off Robin, more forcefully this time. The sun hit his face, forcing his bleary eyes to open; a short yelp was accompanied by him nearly leaping out of the bed.

"Can't I just phone in sick or something? Release a press statement instead of holding a full-arse press conference? I don't feel like going to Straton today," Vaughn seemed to plead, throwing on a bathrobe that was draped haphazardly over a nearby chair.

"I'm not the one who decided to come out of international retirement just because Tumbra were awarded the World Cup," Miriam pouted. "A decision, I will remind you, I didn't really agree with."

"What, the hosting or the coming out of retire—" Robin had to duck the pillow thrown at him by his wife. Remembering the arguments they'd had over the issue, he then tried to defuse the tension. Maybe a bit of flattery would do it. Yeah, flattery got you places. "Yeah. Yeah, no, I get it. You know, you're cute when you make that fa—"

"Robin." Miriam glowered. It was enough for Robin to get the message.

"Yeah, alright, I'll go make us breakfast," Robin casually strolled over to the door of the Vaughn household's bedroom. "Pancakes? I'll make scrambled eggs the way you like them," he said, as he opened the door.

Still no response. Vaughn sat down next to his wife, who was still refusing to look at him.

"Y'know, I love you more than anything, Miriam."

"Even more than football?"

"I'm retiring soon."

"That's not an answer."

"It is to me. Hon, you know what you signed up for when we got married. Love you."

Leaning in and giving her a quick kiss on the forehead, Robin quickly left the room to prepare breakfast for the both of them.

✱✱✱✱✱

The high-speed train blasted past the green fields of Clearmont, with splotches of rain beating, pattering down on the windows, and then melting down away just as quickly. The glass was the only thing separating the commuters from the warmth of the yellow-lit train and the outdoors on the ten o'clock express from Lakewood to Straton. Robin Vaughn, wearing a checkered-grey suit with a sky blue pocket square, was staring out of the window, seeing the country pass him by. He hadn't been disturbed much; the footballer had figured out long ago that whenever he wanted to go out incognito, all he had to do was to put on a pair of thick black horn-rimmed glasses. It was a trick, funnily enough, that he'd picked up from a comic book he read when he was young; the superhero Paladin, who wished to conceal his identity from the world when he wasn't busy saving it, had simply...put on a pair of glasses.

Well, it was probably that, and that his hair was coiffed in such a way that it was virtually unrecognisable from what it would usually be on the pitch. A momentous announcement that everyone could already smell from a mile away still deserved his very best grooming. Silently, he contemplated whether returning had been the best decision. The team needed fresh blood, a new generation that wasn't him, and Vincent, and Harry, and all the other old lads running the show; not him trying in vain to hit the 200-cap milestone that somehow looked a lot more attainable now that he was this close to it. Harrison, Kerr, Wells, Crossley, whom he'd tried to mentor like how Daniel Galbraith had tried to mentor him, they were the future. The now, even; he'd never been able to shake off his initial impressions of them as slightly hotheaded, slightly nervous kids, introducing themselves to the team for the first time. Not him, with his rapidly slowing-down body. They said footballers started to slow down at age thirty-two; he'd done his best to stave that off, with the help of the club, but nobody could escape the clutches of age forever.

But it gnawed away at him. What it was had become hard to define. It was the sum total of failure at the two previous World Cups; being carted off against Græntfjall in the semi-final; being utterly impotent offensively in a must-win game against Tjun-ia. It was the feeling that, despite saying that 92 was his last World Cup, that the story remained unfinished; no amount of Premier Divisions would make up for another deep run in the World Cup. It was the burning rage, a desire to get revenge for a Black Eagles team whose wings had been clipped far too early two years ago.

Quietly, he still wondered whether the team wanted him. Lynne Crossley had grown impatient, waiting for him, the old man, to go. She'd finally gotten her chance, after the disappointment that was 92, to take the number nine jersey for herself. Named on the best team in the world, alongside Harrison and Kerr. She found out first that he was coming back, two weeks ago. He thought that she would be pleased. She instead reacted with a cold fury. They hadn't spoken since.

Harrison and Kerr, captain and vice-captain, and now engaged (though they hadn't told the world); they wanted to take control of the team, lead it in their own ways. They'd found out next; he assured them he wouldn't be standing on their toes, but they didn't seem fully convinced, even if they outwardly welcomed it. And so on. The few remaining members of the old guard — Nick, Ian, Phil, Vincent, Andrew — they'd all welcomed him back, but cautioned that he needed to tread lightly. In a way, he had become an interloper in his own home. Harry Henderson, all the way from Mytanija, had told him to just...stop worrying about it. It's really okay, he'd said. Come to Esca and we'll watch the World Cup together.

But the die had been cast; Robin Vaughn had made his choice. Yuan Zilai had sensed that he wanted to return a long time ago; and had left the door slightly ajar, always waiting for a return. The first phone call that started things off had been nerve-wracking, but Yuan reassured him that everything was alright. He wouldn't be captain again, of course — that was Trudy's port of call, now — but he, of everyone, was always welcome to strap on the black and gold of the Eagles whenever he wanted.

The trip had been uneventful; so was the assembled crowd at the press conference. It was smaller than expected; about ten or so gathered in the press room, as compared to the usual thirty or so when he was still captain. Robin thought it might have been the rain; or that the TFF, for once in their goddamn lives, had finally managed to learn how to keep secrets.

Yuan was there, of course; the wily manager greeting him warmly, as if he'd just gone out for a while and had returned from a long journey. Trudy, on the last day of international duty, had been a bit more curt, the two exchanging formalities and small talk but little else. He noticed the ring; she tugged at it, almost as if she hoped nobody else would notice. He didn't comment; but before the press conference, did see her slip the ring off her fourth finger and into her pocket.

At the anointed time, Yuan led the two players out; when Robin appeared, there were a few gasps and a few camera flashes. Flashing a gentle smile as he sat down, he looked towards the other two; Yuan began with a few words, then Trudy; and finally it was Robin's turn to speak.

"Hi. My name is Robin Vaughn. Some of you here —" he gestured towards a close friend in the crowd of assembled reporters "— may have heard of me."

A few giggles in the audience. But the reporters were hanging onto his every word.

"As Mr. Yuan and Ms. Harrison have said, today's announcement has to do with my future on the Tumbran national team. But I'll get the important bit out of the way first; I'm coming out of international retirement and will be placing myself in contention to be selected for the ninety-third World Cup."

It's World Cup time! Banijans arrive in Tumbra as World Cup 93 set to launch

Image
Banijans celebrate a goal in World Cup Qualifying

BENCOOLEN, TUMBRA- A culture clash if there ever was one. The most liberal city in Tumbra, suddenly flooded with a bunch of religious, conservative Banijans(who do, admittedly, love to party) out here in Esportiva to support their national team at the greatest sporting event of them all- the World Cup Finals. "The fan culture, the interaction, between the Banijan fanbase and the locals- it's going to be a fascinating thing to see." Said an outside observer. "You're clearly going to have all sorts of Banijans who are going to see all sorts of things that they simply cannot see at home, for cultural, political, and religious reasons. But Banijans have always been known to love a party, and there's no party quite like being in Pot 1 at the World Cup. So expect Bencoolen to be a melting pot of all sorts of food and fiestas, before Matchday 1."

That's right. Banija will go to Bencoolen to fill the 55,000 seater stadium against Yuezhou, to open World Cup 93. Despite the mismatch in rank, Banija fully understands that nothing is given at a tournament like this. "We've been through enough over the years to understand that, once you get to the World Cup Finals, ranked is basically an irrelvant number. They draw their groups- but in any one World Cup Finals match, anybody is capable of beating anybody. Yuezhou is as fully capable of beating us as Valanora. We've got to come out strong- they've got a talented team, been to quite a few World Cups, and will be looking to take the scalp off of us early."

Banija's World Cup Qualifying campaign was successful in the technical sense- they qualified directly for the World Cup Finals, without having to make the playoffs. The team's consistency was another matter, however- they only earned one point against Mytanija, the Pot 2 team in their Qualifying group, and consistently struggled to come up with wins against lower quality opposition. However, it wasn't something that derailed the campaign- it speaks to how successful the Banijans have been over the years to say that earning direct qualification still left things to complain about. "Sometimes, qualifying form can be all over the place." Pam Scott told reporters. "We're used to more consistency here, and that's what we want. But look- the Finals are a new tournament. What matters is that we get here, and we got here without having to go through a playoff. Moreover, we maintained our place in Pot 1. That's all we can ask."

The 3rd ranked Banijans open with Yuezhou, of course- then will take on the Squornshelan Remnant States(11) on Matchday 2, followed by Ko-oren(17) in the Presidential derby on Matchday 3. What does this team need to do to be successful at the World Cup Finals? Pam Scott, the manager, said that they need to be better about imposing their will on a game. "In international football, obviously, we get far less time than the clubs to train together and what not. But the key to being successful at a major tournament, especially in group play, is to be able to play your game. Adaptability is crucial, of course. But we want to take the game to our opponents- not be at the mercy of events. Keep possesion, progress forward in our own style, create opportunities, and take them." This is a team, of course, that has made runs to the Finals of each of their last three major tournaments- won AOCAF 67, lost World Cup 92, lost AOCAF 68.

There are a few players who will be crucial to the campaign. One, of course, will be Abel Wesoloski-Okafor. The #9 is a mega-talented forward, who helped lead his club to a CdC Final, as well as finished third on the goalscoring charts in Pasarga(16 goals from 30 league games). "Wesoloski-Okafor is going to be one of the most dangerous players in this tournament." Said a former NTer who was now a TV analyst. "There are so many different ways he can hurt you- in the air, with his pace, with his ability to press, etc... He's not exactly going to rack up assists, but he's going to score goals and be insanely disruptive, and he can score lots of them." Paired with Banija's talented wingers, like Dembo Savaneh, Lolong BOkate, and Sarafina Ikpeazu, he is certainly capable of causing a lot of damage.

Other questions from the Kadongo Kamu, however, come from those who are trying to switch clubs right now. No international manager wants players to be dealing with the transfer window and the tournament at the same time- but it's a reality of the modern game. "Long gone are the days where you just played out your entire career at the club closest to where you were born- and that's a good thing." Pam Scott told reporters. "We aren't the only team dealing with the window at the Finals, but we've got to ensure that our players who are here, are focused on Banija." Whether they can get their deals done before MD1, time will tell. The biggest World Cup players seeking new clubs are Aquila Hongo and Sergius Atieno.

Lastly, there are questions from the back. For the first time in forever, Wanda Kouyate, the Lifetime Achievement award winner, and three level world champion(as well as two-time regional champion) goalkeeper, will not be the woman between the sticks. It'll be Hebron Rao, of Jinja City. She's talented, naturally. But one cannot simulate the pressures of making your World Cup debut. Can she handle the pressure? Furthermore, while we've got some extremely talented defenders back there, only one can be considered to be in his prime- Adin Wasawo, the Spartangrad CB, all of 26 years old. He's at the top of his game- featuring heavy at CB in Spartangrad's title winning season in the Eura. He got a bunch of accolades for that as well, finishing top 5 in defender of the year voting, as well as finishing as a sub on the first-team all-pro list in Eura. We've got Demba Kouyaté, who's 33, and Tairu Conateh, who is still at the top of his game at age 34. But how many more World Cups do they have? The last cycle may have been their best chance to win the game's ultimate trophy- but they are determined to prove that shot has not passed them by. And then, of course, we've got the 20 year old LB, Opio Ssambwa, who will be starting a World Cup match for the very first time. Can he handle the pressure?

Can Banija break the odd cycle curse? Ever since we won World Cup 86, the even cycles have been our best chances to hold the trophy- semifinal runs at World Cups 88 and 90, and we reached the final of World Cup 92. But the odd years... Not so much. Group stage elimination at World Cup 87. Didn't even qualify for World Cup 89. Group stage elimination for World Cup 91. We haven't made the knockout stages of an odd year World Cup since World Cup 85, when we made a run to the semifinals and lost to the eventual winners, FFR.

It'll be an exciting one- it'll be a fun one. All we know is this- go Kadongo Kamu!

Second Leg of Baggieland v. NYK playoff, in Dewayo, 0-0 on the day(4-4 on aggregate), 64th minute

It really had been wild that neither team had scored at this point of the second leg. Considering all the goals that happened in the first leg- that 8 goal thriller at Dartmouth Hill, that set us up for this leg- it seemed as if everybody had left their finishing boots in Baggieland. Both teams had created a number of opportunities- but a combination of poor finishing, as well as excellent goalkeeping, had kept the tie level at 4-4, and the game at 0-0. Angonga probably had the golden chance of the game, way back in the 24th minute, when he was wide open after a bouncing cross from Handsdotter. However, he mishit it, hitting the ball with his knee- and therefore getting absolutely 0 power behind the ball.

But in this moment, Odede Angonga knew that he'd have himself a wondrous oppportunity. Arvid Handsdotter had tried to whip off a shot, but was nearly tackled by a Baggieland defender while doing so- in the box. The referee would have no qualms about this decision- he absolutely had to point to the spot, to the wondrous cheer of Nyowani Kitara fans. There was always chaos after a call like this. No look to VAR- the call itself was too obvious. But Baggieland players with their gamesmanship, trying to get into Angonga's head, Angonga was ignoring them. Fights over the penalty spot, as happened in moments like this- Baggieland players trying to scruff it up, while NYK players defended the spot.

Once the referee got everything cleared, and handled, Angonga was given the ball. He placed it down, backed up, and heard the referee blow his whistle. He went low to the keeper's right... AND A SAVE! Odede Angonga put his hands over his head, in the surrender cobra position- but wait! The referee was running in, blowing his whistle. "Rekick, rekick- the keeper was off his line!" Baggieland players were arguing with the referee, and the away fan support was incensed. Angonga had gotten bailed out there, and he knew it- he had taken a poor penalty, and he got lucky that Baggieland's keeper had gotten jumpy. There would be all sorts of controversy about this decision after the match, but that wasn't Angonga's problem.

Whistle blown again. Penalty- take 2. Angonga knew he wanted to try something different. This time, he'd go hard and high, to the keeper's right. He picked his spot- this time, launching the ball high. The keeper guessed correctly, but did not have a chance as the ball went flying by him. Angonga grinned and shrugged, as he jogged towards the corner flag to celebrate his goal. That would be the goal that would send Nyowani Kitara to the World Cup Finals- and however it came about, he was more than happy with the end result.

Nyowani Kitara players celebrate a goal in World Cup Qualifying

CHROMATIKA- It's never easy to reach the World Cup Finals, and Nyowani Kitara proved that this cycle. With Juvencus flying ahead to win their Qualifying group with all sorts of time to spare, Nyowani Kitara had to get there the hard way- via the World Cup Qualification Playoffs. After a wild, 4-4 away draw in the first leg, the team were home cooking in the second leg. It was a spectacular, intense tie- but the lone goal came controversially. Via an obvious penalty, it was retaken after the keeper was deemed to leave his line. It was a borderline call, and a harsh one from the referee. But the call was given, the penalty was converted, and despite twii.tur legions of fans everywhere saying that NYK's qualfication was BS, all that mattered was that they qualified.

Pot 2 for the FInals. And they have an absolutely well intriguing group. First, of course, they will take on the former world champions, Pasarga, to kick off the tournament. Rushmori rivals, they do not have a ton of history against them. Second, they'll take on their next door neighbors, Tikariot, on Matchday 3. Although both of thsoe nations have more World Cup experience than NYK, somehow we sit in Pot 2. But this is surely one of the most wide open groups at this tournament- basically everybody's got a decent chance of advancing. Not to mention- we've got the defending world champions, Zwangzug, on Matchday 3. Of course, they are the defending champions. But we beat them at the last World Cup! 2-0 in the group stages. Of course, they exacted revenge in the semis- but who's asking.

We've got a lot of veteran players on this squad. Bigombe- 34 years old. Okombo- 35 and retiring. Angonga. Odede. Wang. A lot of players on the wrong side of 30, and only climbing. The question is- what is the ceiling? Perhaps they have already reached it. Their magical run to the World Cup semifinals, last time around, was nothing short of incredible- one of the most impressive feats of the modern World Cup- short of Pemecutan's magical run to the World Cup Final, of course. So what are we looking for here? "We want to break into that upper echelon of nations in soccer- raise the standards within the country." Said Okombo. So what's the goal to do that?

The goal to do that, would have to be reach the knockout stages. We get to the knockout stages twice in a row? Then there's no debate- we're a top 15 nation in the multiverse. The jump from the teens into the single digits, and the high single digits into a nation that can actually win a major international tournament, are the toughest in international football. We aren't quite at that stage yet. But we do have a chance to ensure that the semifinal run was not just a flash in the pan last time out. We've got a big team. We may not have a big name yet, but we can go out there, and go toe to toe with the biggest names in international football- taking the game to them, and winning games at a World Cup.

First up on our list? Pasarga. Let's get it done.

And Now the Fun Begins

Qualifying is just generally a stressful time. It doesn't really matter what seed you are because no matter what everybody is more concerned about what could happen and worst case scenarios than best case scenarios. This is especially true as the WCC keeps voting for hosts who only allow 32 slots to the World Cup as compared to 48 slots as the MFA has lobbied for since the 50s. Of course no host has bid for 48 slots, it's probably not the WCC's fault. Either way, I do think it's something that should happen soon. Regardless, qualifying is still stressful because losing is stressful. What will happen if we don't qualify? Could we become the next Poafmersia or Audioslavia and slide down the rankings? Oh god, could we become CoH regulars again like in the 50s? All scenarios are possible and they're all stressful.

But, of course, Milchama survived, again. Sure a draw in the road leg was slightly stressful but a beautiful 4-1 win over Kimi-Suomi clinched qualification and with 4 first half goals turned the second half into a celebration of olès and qualifying. So that brings us forward to the fun part where we get to be in the World Cup proper. We have yet again qualified, for the first time in a non-Vil/Tur cup since our Return, and might just be becoming regulars to this whole World Cup thing. I mean we've qualified for 3 of the past 4 so that's basically what you would expect for a regular streak. So that means it's time to celebrate in the usual way by looking at our group, freaking out, and then telling you why we're freaking out. Without further ado let's do that:

Group B:
Flavovespia (33) - For the first time since the Return we are not the lowest ranking side in a group! We were Pot 3 which is apparently a thing people care about now! Either way, that means we get a team that we're nominally favorites against! That said, nominally is the right word, Flavovespia is a good side that can definitely do damage. It also hurts both of us that it's the first game of the group stage meaning that neither Milchama or Flavovespia gets the 90 minutes to settle in before being in what essentially becomes a do or die match. Here is where I expect the Warriors to come out swinging but the Consummate Vs or Hornets (our 5 minutes of research could not find their nickname) to strike back and force a draw. 1-1.

Nephara (9) - While Nephara have been good for a very long time, they have also, as far as we remember, never faced Milchama. So the question becomes who are Nephara? What is their deal? And the answer is a competent team that just keeps being competent. Since Milchama is almost a competent that is never that far away from being incompetent you have to assume an advantage for the Nepharans. So expect a victory for the Cormorants though it'll be close. 3-2 to Nephara.

Græntfjall (5) - Oh the Snow Wolves. Last World Cup, in a functional dead rubber as both Græntfjall and Milchama could advance with a draw the Snow Wolves seemingly betrayed the Warriors to win in a landslide 6-1. I'd expect if there's one game circled on the calendar right now for Milchama it's the game against Græntfjall. So expect a determined Warrior side to slice through the defense and win this game even if it won't be easy. 3-1 to Milchama with a comeback.

Milchama (28) - Hey look that's us! Remember us! Remember when we were happy to be here and didn't worry about things like getting revenge or making octos? Yeah, me too, fun times but those days are over. We expect some points and frankly we think we can advance. Right now our predictions say 4 points which definitely could be enough for advancement so the question is a. are we right? and b. is that enough? I know the answer to a is no but b could happen. And if we keep falling upward than anything can happen*

*Except winning the World Cup that will not happen.

Expect fireworks from a fun Group B and let's be ready for another turn at one of the most competitions in the multiverse!

Zwangzug's e-Lipogram

Zwangzug, as World Cup champions, got drawn into Group H for this World Cup in Chromatika (and in Tumbra). Our nation's jocks know Chromatika, which was host to last bat-and-ball-sport "Classic." In that group of playoffs, Zwangzug would knock off Tikariot, but lost to Banija, who would go on to win it all in highly dramatic fashion. Chromatika is kind of strict (no importing drugs without saying so, no bringing guns in without lots of forms to fill out, no jaywalking), but Zwangzugians will normally not do such things anyway, so not much difficulty on that front. Possibly jaywalking is a risk, but all you must do is say "oh no, a car! so scary!" and most Zwangzugians will go back to law abiding in anxious panic.

First off, Tikariot's Snowy Owls--a country you might know of from Baraldhur AFC, Lissa Crain's club. Damian, a past Tikariot national, is now moving from SC Montfort (in an association that is vanishing into a murky fog), to Cham in our country. This is a highly attacking squad, look for Port Tacassam FC's Adrian Grimaud up front to shoot and pass with quality.

On Matchday Two, Zwangzug will play against Pasarga in Lhor. This squad, with a coach from Banija, is not as all-out attacking as Tikariot, but will still go forward with vigor. Captain Sarrazin holds down a back four that also sports Andrija Hrvatin, a woman who plays in Tumbra's association.

Staying in Chromatika's Coastal District for its third match, Zwangzug will go to Pria, a city that was in its past an imposing military bastion. But now it is not so scary, and its "Pack" will play host to Zwangzug and Nyowani Kitara. Many of us know this squad from two dramatic showdowns last World Cup: a group round loss and a last-four win for our country. Most of Nyowani Kitara's individuals took part in that match pair: only a young backup forward is not coming back from our prior match. Zhou Mushonga still plays for our "Cosmos," and Malmquist is an FTC star. And, yup, this country is also highly attacking.

It's a jarring contrast: Rushmori nations known for political chaos, war, too-spicy food, and such disastrous ongoings. And our isolationist country, a utopia of sorts in which not much dramatic occurs, saving for fictional gaming that jumps forward and back through history. Is Zwangzug sort of an odd squad out amid that trio? Probably. But--as you know, Bob--it's also coming in as World Cup champions! Who says good guys finish last?

THE OVERLAP
DRAGONS SEEK WC88 FORM IN TOUGH GROUP
Zhang Yiming, WORLD CUP 93

BENCOOLEN -- Yuezhou are no stranger to being the group minnows - which is about the one advantage they'll have in a Group C that is stacked to the gills. While neutrals hoping to see a Dragons underdog run may have been disappointed to see Chen Huikang's surprise package drawn with Banija, Ko-oren, and the Squornshelans, those who remember Yuezhou's only other World Cup appearance - exactly a decade ago under Lu Jialan, when they managed four points from similarly difficult opposition - may be more optimistic.

There are, of course, significant differences between those Dragons - recently unreddened - and this new iteration. The World Cup 88 Yuezhou NT, who muscled a point out of Turori before upsetting Farfadillis on the final MD, were a team on their way up. With the likes of Liu Huiying, Wen Xiaohui, Yuan Mingrong, and Diadora Reeve all entering their primes, the old Yuezhou knew that even a failure to advance could still be the start of a Golden Generation. While they still fell into being the Golden Generation by default, the third-place finish they managed in Newmanistan still represents the height of their abilities and their ambitions. This iteration of the Dragons harbors no such delusions. Generational attacking talent Liu Huiying is likely to retire from international play as soon as the Dragons are eliminated - and while Liang Wei or maybe even Sienna Li can eventually replace her, neither are likely to have as profound of an impact as the Corvistone/Moths/Lanar legend. Wen Xiaohui, somewhat marginalized recently but still a key player in her prime, is likely to follow, as is Diadora Reeve, with Li Jing and Huang Shedong long gone. There is young talent waiting to replace them, of course, such as Kara Mingsdottír, Huang Han, and Elaine Xu. But this is still a team in the midst of a massive transition.

Chen Huikang has also eschewed the pragmatism of the only other Yue manager to qualify for a World Cup in favor of a more top-down style of play. In contrast to the World Cup 88 Dragons, who sat back but hit hard and fast on the counter, the World Cup 93 Dragons like to retain the ball in a high-energy possession style. It's made the team far more consistent, as they've reached consecutive qualification playoffs, made a World Cup, and won a silver medal at the Cup of Harmony. But it may come at the cost of being less capable of scrapping points off of truly big clubs such as Banija, as Chen Huikang's Dragons have less of a track record with major upsets. Still, if nothing else, the playoff victory over Mertagne and the team's repeated Cup of Harmony extra time wins have shown that this squad at least has enough dawg in 'em for a potential upset.

Yuezhou opens against Banija, before playing Ko-oren and the Squornshelan Remnant States on Matchdays Two and Three. The Kadongo Kamu will certainly be the Dragons' stoutest challenge, with the likes of Sarafina Ikpeazu and Abel Wesoloski-Okafor capable of wreaking havoc on a Yue defense that is probably past its best. But Pamela Scott's hyperattacking style doesn't exactly leave Banija rock-solid at the back, either, and if you squint there's enough individual quality in the Yue front three to leave a crack in the door for the Dragons. Certainly, any result that isn't being completely pasted by Banija could inspire enough belief within the Dragons for a point to fall to them in the next two matches, which should be more winnable. But although four points is the score to beat, even one would be more than enough for a Yuezhou side looking for sustained success.

ESCAPE
5. da un amico

Chromia, Capital District
"Like I said," Thea Squarciafichi started as she opened the door to the café, "we beat the hosts and we're through, Adrian. This might be our last World Cup opener - we've gotta make it count."

"You keep saying that like it's easy," Adrian Toscani replied, laughing. "It's good to be out of Savigliane, I guess, and have something else to focus on. All that portal shit had me up at night."

Thea held a hand up as she sipped her latte. "Shit, Adrian, are you going to be good for this? I know you aren't starting now, but we gotta get everyone bought in if we want to make a run. Like I said, last chance."

"Yeah, I'll be good. It's not like-" too late, he realized who was coming down the other side of the road. "Shit, it's Bianca. Don't look up."

"Bianca? The fuck she doing here?" Thea started, completely disregarding the second half of the statement. "Nazi convention run outta - ah. What's up, Bianca," she said with the world's fakest smile as the former Swan and current Prime Minister walked over. Adrian, for his part, gave a friendly nod.

"What are the odds, huh? That I'd run into you two here in Chromatika. How are we feeling about that opening match against the hosts?"

"What are you doing here, Bianca?"

"Just on a state trip, is all," she offered with the faintest hint of smugness. "Gotta do my part as the Prime Minister to cheer the Swans on now that they're back in the World Cup for the, what, fifth time? Won't be the last, I'm sure, with that new generation of players we've got."

Adrian and Thea exchanged awkward glances, which Bianca either failed to or chose not to react to. Neither had really discussed Piano di Dios' miraculous come-from-behind election win yet, and Bianca was absolutely the last person they wanted to talk to about politics. "So, how bout that James Beach, huh? You guys think la famiglia really got him?"

Adrian, unsurprisingly, broke first. "Oh, the government doesn't know?"

"I don't get involved in all of that. The police are working very hard to track him down, of course, but between you and me, I don't think they've got much so far! But we'll see."

"Yeah, well," Adrian mustered weakly. "Hope they find him."

"You're planning something," Thea said abruptly. The other two turned, Adrian in surprise, Bianca in...was that mild annoyance, for a second, before the practiced smile came back on?

"What am I planning, Thea?"

"I don't know. But it's something. You, it's like...remember when ACAB and Nazionale were about to play, and Nazionale's captain said some disgusting shit about ACAB fans before the match? And Bianca was just like this before the match - I went to watch right after school on the television - talking to him, too, all cordial and rehearsed. Ten minutes in, she's got a brace and she's dancing on him. She's going to...shit, dance on us, I guess."

Bianca looked hurt. "I just came to reconnect with my old friends. Adrian, what do you th-"

"It's the facility, isn't it. Are you going after Bonmaison's portal facility soon?" she added, taking a step forwards. "What are you gonna do, burn it down with your religious nut friends?"

Adrian, vaguely uneasy, reached out to pull Thea back from Bianca's face. "Come on, Thea, not here-" he managed before she threw his hands off of him. Bianca, chuckling, waved them off. "It's alright," she said. "I understand the...pre-World Cup stress. And what a time it's been for Savigliane! But you have nothing to worry about. I don't agree with your...ah, project, but I won't interfere with it. Please just focus on getting us the World Cup win we deserve," she said.

"Great. I, ah, appreciate that," Adrian said, realizing that Thea had left already. "Enjoy the match, Bianca. And, um, congrats," he said, before turning to follow his teammate.

Ritorno, Grande Cucina
"Merda, merda, merda," Lorenzo de Rossi chanted to himself as he speedwalked (running would've been a touch too undignified) down the halls of the Bonmaison Centre for Portal Technology. His eyes darted to the side as he pulled up abruptly at a small door, flipped open a panel on its outer edge, and typed in a passcode. The panel beeped green and he pulled himself into the modern heart of Savigliano portal research, locking the deadbolt behind him.

His phone had been ringing off the hook for about thirty minutes; finally given a reprieve, he checked it to find Joël Bonmaison on the other end. He sighed, noted the twelve missed calls from the construction magnate, and hit "return call".

"Lorenzo!" The Ligurian's voice boomed from the other end. "What the fuck is going on up there!"

"We're being raided, I think! Lavigne said it was government agents, but they're unmarked. They're smashing up equipment, making extrajudicial arrests...it's mayhem out there!" As if on cue, he heard a crash and a voice cry out in the distance - he hoped it wasn't one of the senior researchers he'd been working with. A few losses, de Rossi could stand. But if they took the entire Centre away, surely he was done for.

"Call the police, then!" A note of panic had crept its way into the normally cocksure businessman's voice. "They can't do this to me - us!"

"The Grande Cucinan police? Listen to yourself, man! What are a few pasta boys going to do about this? No, we need your private security - stat!"

"My private security? They've been there this whole time!"

"Lavigne said you'd needed them to supervise-" Lorenzo's blood ran cold as he looked to his side and only realized, ten minutes after they'd parted ways, that Agent Maxence Lavigne was no longer by his side. "Fucking Oldworlder," was all he had to say.

"Lorenzo? What are we doing now, then? Do you have the tech secured? Lorenzo!"

But the physicist and former leader of the Interdimensional Travel Task Force, now doing his best to revive his most famous research project for a construction guy and some footballers, was no longer paying attention. There'd been a knock on his door, three pounding, rattling strikes of a fist Lorenzo didn't like his chances against.

"Professor de Rossi! Come out at once, and you will not be harmed!"

"I've gotta go. Tell Adrian and Thea, and bring your security in to salvage whatever they leave behind." he said, and then hung up with a sigh. He looked behind him, put everything he could into the locked chest behind the crack in the wall, then opened the door with a sigh. There to greet him were six plainclothes intelligence agents in formation. de Rossi noted with detachment that one of them was holding a can of gasoline.

"Professor Lorenzo de Rossi," the first, a big Ligurian, said, "You are under arrest for violating the Savigliano Interdimensional Travel Safety Act. You have the right to remain silent; any statements made can be used against you as evidence by the judiciary. Do you understand this?"

"Who the fuck is arresting me? We're in Grande Cucina," he replied.

The agent smiled in return. "Prime Minister Bianca Fiore says hello. Now come with us."

World Cup 93 Finals Factsheet
contact Sasha Henderson, FAC Director of Media Relations for further details

The Commonwealth of Baker Park National Team return for their 14th berth in the NSWC Finals, the 93rd edition being co-hosted by Chromatika and Tumbra. BP needed a late surge in qualifying and surviving a two legged playoff with Drawkland to extend their record as the only currently active nation that has never failed to reach the last 32.

As a team in transition, the Bees were not a bookmakers darling this time out in the qualifying process but strung together enough quality performances to finish second in their group to Tikariot. They have boosted their KPB ranking up to 23rd and could sneak into the top 20 with advancement to the knockout stage. Their consecutive qualifying streak is currently third longest among active nations, behind regional rivals Farfadillis (25) and Rushmori giants Nephara (15)

The Millennium Generation
--The opening match of World Cup 93 against Juvencus will mark the 1000th fixture the history of the Football Association of the Commonwealth dating to 1934, where they played just a single time followed by a hiatus until 1948. Their all-time record stands at 544 wins, 293 losses and 162 draws which has been boosted considerably by the switch to a mixed gender NT squad, as the record from the Baptism of Fire 67 to present is 365 wins, 131 defeats and 93 draws.
--Over the last 99 matches since the 900th all time fixture against Quebec & Shingoryeo following World Cup 91, the BPNT have compiled a record of 59 wins, 22 defeats and 18 draws, which will mark the fourth best 100 match stretch in history regardless of the result.

Meet the Gaffer
--Jennifer Prescott is the longest serving manager in the history of the national team, having taken charge of her 253rd match in the second leg against Drawkland; she is also by far the winningest boss in history, with that 4-3 triumph marking the 154th time she's led a BP side to victory.

Been here before
--Baker Park have an overall record in the Finals of 25 wins, 24 defeats and 8 draws, with a best ever finish of 4th Place at World Cup 85; the last time Chromatika co-hosted the WCF, the Bees advanced to the quarterfinal where they fell to Banija at RCK Field in Alnio.

Curtain Calls for some of BP's best ever
--This could likely be the final cycle for some of the key players in the 30 player Finals pool, as Zach Johnston, Jerome Brooks, Charlotte Bauer, Nicole D'Amico, Christa Vuckovic and Hayley Gibson will all be over 30 years of age at the conclusion of the Finals, although none of them have made an official announcement.

Esportiva, Here we Come
--The group draw in Tumbra places BP in Group D, where they will face Juvencus, followed by a third meeting in this WC cycle with world #2 Turori and finally a match against Kandorith; the FAC will base the squad in Bencoolen, the site of the final matchday, which is roughly geographically in between the other venues in Fontwell (MD1) and Hesham (MD2).
--The Bees and Juvencus' gli attaccanti have met twice previously, in qualifying for World Cup 88, the above mentioned Chromatik co-hosted edition, winning at home 3-2 and drawing on Sonnel 2-2; Kandorith has only a single previous meeting, on matchday 2 of World Cup 86 at Treasure Trove Stadium in Shire-Port, Drawkland won by the Commonwealth 3-1, which coincidentally followed a 1-0 win in the opener against...Turori.

Eels, Bees no strangers
--Turori and Baker Park will square off for the tenth time overall and sixth time over the last 37 Baker Park matches—three times in Eagles Cup XV and twice in Group 13, with their Vilitan Cove neighbors and allies winning four of those five contests--in addition to splitting their two previous meeting in the Finals and another home & home split in EC XIV. Both World Cup group stage matches have occurred outside Atlantian Oceania and six of the nine contests were decided by 1 goal (only the EC14 doubleheader which saw the nations swap 3-0 away wins and the EC15 match in Springfield won by Turori 5-2 stand out as exceptions to the rule).

Standing still or falling behind?
--Baker Park will look to advance beyond the group stage in a World Cup they didn't co-host for the first time since World Cup 88. Since being honored after WC90 with recognition into the Nations Hall of Fame, the FAC have witnessed a sea change in the competitive makeup of the World Cup Council, as over a dozen national teams have caught up or surpassed the Commonwealth in on the pitch performance. Manager Prescott believes that this squad will provide a foundation for the near-term future in the same way the early mixed gender era WC squads known as “The New Originals” did for the later Pam Scott/Ichi Tuzzio led teams in the mid 80's.

Always bet on Black?
--Over the past century that Baker Park have fielded squads representing the nation in soccer competition there has been a single constant identity that has connected all those teams to one another: bright yellow or gold socks.
Photographic evidence and contemporary documentation over time have established that no matter the color combination of shirts and shorts worn by players, gold socks were always provided by the equipment & kit managers to the playing staff. Fewer than ten matches have even seen an FAC representative side wear socks of a different color.
Which makes the decision to have the BPNT don black socks with the “Ghost Whites” away kit—the original NT uniform—in the 999th all time match against Drawkland even more unusual in the context of the bigger picture. The AOCAF 62 Championship side elected to swap the all white away kit to a white shirt/black shorts motif in the closing stages of the knockout rounds, including the Final against Qasden.
A handful of other fixtures through history have seen solid black jerseys worn with either white or gold shorts as a necessary change under circumstances, but it's nearly always a winning result when an element of the NT kit is replaced by an impromptu switch to black.

Stat Pack
--Baker Park held the opponent off the scoresheet 8 times over the 22 match qualifying tournament, tied for most clean sheets in NT history with WCQ 91; they tallied 3 or more goals in 11 of 22 matches (plus both legs of the playoff vs Drawkland) and finished with an overall goal difference of +22. They won nine of their eleven home fixtures along with six times away from the Commonwealth with three draws in earning 48 points, putting them in the top 25 overall among the 180 nations competing.
--It was a cycle full of individual milestones for several players, as Zach Johnston became the first keeper and the 15th overall NT member to reach 100 caps, while Jerome Brooks hit 90 appearances in the first leg against Drawkland; Victor Onikambe and Paige Eichorn both passed 75 caps and Chandra Mack's first appearance in the Finals will push past the diamond level, too; Lucie Shanahan, Isabelle Wiley, Quinton Harris and Karrie Price all got their 50th cap during the qualifying campaign, with Olivia Ryan on the cusp of making her half century while in Tumbra.
--Nichole D'Amico (113) and Christa Vuckovic (112) continue the climb up the appearance chart to sit 5th and 6th respectively.
--Mack and D'Amico both passed the 30 goal plateau to move into a crowded top 12 all time in that category.
--The 4-4 draw with Tikariot was the seventh time in NT history that they scored at least that many times and didn't win the match.

Chromatika + Savigliane might look like the best group for an upset just based on rankings, but the reality is that if you’re in pot 3, you’re going to have a bad time.

Instant analysis: There’s certainly no easy groups but Kelssek have already lost twice to Pemecutan in the past year, and THE are always favourites as five-time champions

Without picking on anyone in particular, what was Issac Lafrenière doing to stop Kelssek getting such a difficult group? If you want to be starting in midfield you have to earn it

Mongrels (gang)
The Mongrels is a criminal gang that originated in the greater Kirkenes region and spread to the rest of Noua Cymru and Kelssek.

History and origins
The gang’s origins are traced to 162 FE. Biker gangs which dominated the organized crime underworld of Kirkenes were generally restricted to white Anglian-speakers, with other ethnic and linguistic groups forming more disperse and smaller gangs. Alliances were formed to fight back against a string of attacks by the Reapers biker gang on nightclubs run by other gangs, which evolved into a protection extortion ring. The Mongrels reputation came out of several violent brawls with biker gangs in Kirkenes nightlife areas. A series of such incidents in May 162 led to four deaths and 16 reported stabbings. Oliver Greening, a prominent Reapers leader, was also murdered in a contract killing while on holiday in Dartmoor on the Haligonia south coast.

The Reapers and allied biker gangs engaged in a “gang war” with the Mongrels for the next two years, with 57 homicides attributed to this violence and numerous police operations to crack down on the problem. Enforcement escalated dramatically after an innocent bystander was shot dead in a mistaken identity assassination attempt at the Mistgwyn Metropole shopping mall in western Kirkenes. The gang’s founders are considered to be Gaius Nguyen and Alan McGrady. McGrady was killed by a Reapers car bomb in 187 FE, while Nguyen is currently serving a life sentence for ordering the murder of two Reapers members. Nguyen was initially to serve his sentence at Kingsharbour Correctional Facility near Saintsport but was relocated to a high-security prison in Etnier after a failed prison break attempt at Kingsharbour using a hijacked helicopter.

Nguyen and McGrady adapted a series of loyalty rituals they apparently took from Loopite gangster movies and Nihonian warrior honour codes. Full members have never explicitly divulged details, but the induction ritual for a prospect to become part of the organization is supposed to involve drinking horse blood.

Activities
The organization operates sophisticated drug production and smuggling operations. They are known to specialize in party drugs, marijuana, and the import and export of stolen cars. The gang’s involvement in manufacturing ecstasy, ketamine, and LSD have been particularly problematic for the Kelssek’s legalized dispensary system for recreational drugs. Despite efforts to stamp out organized crime involvement in the industry, numerous reports have noted that tracing suppliers and the ownership structures is often difficult and thus users of legal drugs are essentially subsidizing the gang through the government system.

Kelssek’s restrictive international trade policies also create a large black market for imported cars in which the Mongrels are active players. They are particularly active at New Saintsport Harbour, from which they export stolen Revel and WM car models which are popular abroad. A report in the Kirkenes Courier reported a theft victim showing their car’s GPS tracker showing their WM 620i being driven in Mytanija 72 hours after being stolen from their home in Redswyth. A KBC news report in 189 stated that the Mongrels had “virtually taken over” parts of New Saintsport Harbour to move contraband in and out of Kelssek.

* *

The lead from the Mongrels bar had proven solid, at least in identifying the bodies. They’d sent the records to authorities in Mytanija and gotten confirmation about the dead. There had been a cryptic sign-off to the email, however. “We hope to have more information for you if possible quite shortly.” Was that how people normally ended messages in Mytanija, or...? Certainly the Mongrels wouldn’t be interested simply in helping the next of kin find closure.

Her desk phone rang.

“Yes, hello Detective Thompson, this is Ezra Jameson from Border Services? Just wanted to confirm something. I’ve looked into our records and we can’t find the names you provided us. Is there anything more you can give us, especially date of birth, that kind of thing?”

“I gave you all I have unfortunately. So they’re not in your system?”

“Not at all. So that just tells us they didn’t enter the country legally, like, they didn’t come through at Malgwyld Airport or any kind of official border control. Which could mean several things of course. They may have used false passports, but that’s hard to do and we cross check things like who paid for the flight and other kinds of records, international watch-lists, that kind of thing. My guess is, since you’re up in Saintsport, they were probably passed through as ship crew under fake names. Or, they’ve compromised someone with security access able to let people bypass those checkpoints.”

“Yeah, I see.”

“Honestly, we had problems with some of our officers up there, I have to say. About ten months ago now? Two fellas dismissed and jailed for taking seized goods for themselves.”

Myriam remembered the case. There had been suspicions of organized crime being involved, but they couldn’t trace it to any of the usual suspects. Perhaps it had indeed been unusual suspects. “Yeah, that’s possible. Thanks for your help.”

Myriam went back to her computer and started tapping out an email to the Commonwealth Police intelligence unit. Much as this might mean the case getting taken out of her hands, if this was going beyond the Saintsport Regional Police’s bailiwick, they’d probably need to see what the national-level force had.

Welcome to the coverage of the legendary Paladon Open Air here on The Metal Observer! This year we are going to cover it as it happens and live blog instead of waiting until the whole festival is done. This year has a few really special goodies in store for us metalheads, such as day 3 headliners Serpents Cross, who will be celebrating their 25th anniversary with a special show that is going to feature a full choir and some surprises that they've been really secretive about, so that'll be something interesting. Another one is a special reunion show by Brookstation avantgarde metallers Queen Charlemagne and there are rumours that Crimsonhawke-based symphonic metallers Ghosts of Winter also have something special planned, again, no matter how hard we've tried, we couldn't get any information.

Image

So, as mentioned above, we'll be posting about the games as they play, so it could be one of us writing, could be several, it all depends on how things go. This year we're a team of six that is tackling the festival, our editor-in-chief Alistair Cairncross, his deputy Alana Black Bear, and us foot folk, Jakob Kvarnfeldt, Jason Rafferty, Al Langfield and Corinne Delacroix.
Image

Jakob: Alright, Corinne, Jason and I are on our way to see the first band of the festival, Hednisk from Xanark, some pagan black metal. They just released their debut album Hednisk Krigare and it's some pretty cool stuff, so here's to hoping. It also looks like it might start to rain, which I'm not looking forward to.

Image

Corinne: This was short, but sweet! It's rare these days to see a trio, but they managed to get their studio sound pretty ok. I wish they could have brought the violin on stage, too, though. Given they only had half an hour, they played most of Hednisk Krigare and they managed to get the few people that had ventured out this early going quite nicely. Their pagan black is fairly heavy on the black metal part, quite harsh at times and on the album, the violin adds some beautiful melodies that really were missed live. But especially their band hymn "Hednisk" has this awesome riff that shows the potential these youngsters have. They were a bit nervous, but they're barely 18. Good start to the festival.
Jason: I was rather disappointed, to be honest, I liked the album quite ok, but not bringing the violinist really took away most of what made them different. I agree that "Hednisk" is a great song, I hope they'll be able to get more like that out. This has been their first festival and they've been doing pretty well, but moving on...

Image

Alana: Damn, this was a tour de force! Next up were Uppreisn from Græntfjall and holy hell, I had no idea how good they were! There's nothing filigree about them, they have about the sensitivity of a wrecking ball, but this was just pure energy, half an hour of almost non-stop hardcore thrash. Not sure what Höskuldur's vocal cords are made of, but I'm surprised he still had any voice left. I will admit I only know their last album Brennandi Samfélag, so I had an idea of what to expect, but they blow that away live like there's no tomorrow. There were quite a few Græntfjaller fans that started their own moshpit, which was fun to watch. The only songs I recognized were "Steypa Minnisvarðanum" and "Þessi Þjóð Er Niðurbrotin", so they must have played quite a bit of older material. Which I - must - get!!
Al: I can confirm, there were quite a bit of songs off their first two albums Uppreisn and Að Gálganum. Especially on their debut they were a lot more hardcore and they've consistently added more thrash metal into their sound without losing this brutal edge. They're not real masters of their instruments, but they more than make up for it in intensity. Great band, great gig. Any other thrash bands are going to be hard-pressed to top this!

Image

Alistair: First band for me were Thunderland, one of the newer power metal bands coming out of Tikariot City. They released their second album In a Land of Blood and Thunder a few months ago and they killed it. Led by guitar wizard Scott Gomersall, they pulled off a flawless gig, virtuoso guitars, epic choruses and they have one of Tikariot's prime vocal talents with Andre Methery. They started off with the title track of their new album, with the double-bass really driving the song and Gomersall has these crazy arpeggios laid over them, this is great stuff. They've been alternating songs from both albums and they really got into this cool flow and they were tight, really tight. Their material isn't necessarily the most technical, but they really delivered as a unit and put the power into power metal. "Grab the Bull by the Horns", "Hunting High and Low" and "Ancient Rites" all with those big choruses and they got the fans fully under their spell, singing with them. I had mentioned Methery, his vocals on "Hang the Traitors" were just stellar, using the full three and a half octaves of his voice, and power belting that chorus...I wish they would have had more playing time, but they really made the most of it!
Alana: I really don't see it. Sure, they're catchy and all, but I've never seen what is so big about power metal.
Alistair: I have no idea why you even bother, Alana, you don't like it either way.
Alana: Glutton for punishment.

Image

Jason: Brandnew band, not just to me, their eponymous debut is supposed to come out next month, so I have no idea why they were this high in the running order, but whatever. They're definitely goth, all pale and dressed in black, which is a look that doesn't work well in daylight, but they were kinda lucky that dark clouds were moving in fast. Musically, though, they've been more interesting than I would have thought. They had all the gothic atmosphere and keyboards, but what surprised me were the vocals of Dina Moruseva who was not the soprano I expected, but she actually has a really deep voice, so that added an interesting dimension. The music itself was ok, but as I said, I'm not sure why they were this high up on the list.
Corinne: I enjoyed them, like Jason said, the singer really gave this a special touch and I really enjoyed their atmosphere. My favourites were "Beneath the Veil" and "Ocean of Tears" when the guitars went a little heavier and formed a good counterpart to the keyboards. But yeah, given that they haven't even released an album yet, they probably should have opened the day.

Image

Alana: Horde of Hel are one of the longest-standing folk metal bands of Tikariot, they've been around for over 20 years and you know exactly what you get from them. A good time, tons of positive energy and enough songs about drinking to give you a buzz without ingesting a drop. Combining heavy guitars and pounding drums with violin and accordion and just this whole party atmosphere is perfect for a festival like this. The vocals of Joe Helmsford were a little rougher than on the albums, but I really don't think anybody cared, even though they got worse as the gig went on. Songs like "Drink", "Where's my Vodka" or "Meet me at the Meadhall" give you a good idea about what to expect and their high-octane rhythms and pretty simple song structures are just great to give a good time and make you feel happy. I've heard some people argue that there's not much substance to the band or the songs, but that's exactly the point. They just want to have fun and they definitely delivered on that!
Image

Image

Al: I will admit, I had never even heard of this band before, Saboteurs of Oblivia from Qasden, so I had no idea what to expect. And what I got was, well, different. Musically it was a mix of heavy metal, some rock, some...well, kind of death metal, but the music was not centre stage here, but it was the show. That started with the musicians who were all dressed up in quite interesting fashion, they all looked like they stepped in from 100 or 125 years ago, in dark suits and hats, they reminded me a bit of a group of undertakers that ended up on a stage somehow and it all was pretty theatrical and had some amazing showmanship. It fit well with song titles like "Welcome to the Crypt", "Lick of the Blade" or "Dawn of the Apocalypse". Singer Johannes Grimlocke really was something to behold, with an incredibly versatile vocal performance, with regular clean vocals, growls, surprising falsetto and some really unsettling whispers. They said that they were inviting us to a 'theatre of the macabre' and they really pulled through!

Image

Corinne: Another band that debuted on the POA were Maledict from Oberour Ar Moro. They were announced as blackgaze and they delivered. The dark clouds were really hanging low by now, thankfully without rain, and that helped the atmosphere. I actually looked them up and the bandmembers go under the pseudonyms of Glav, Dienez, Peuznoz and Braventez, which is Oberour for Rain, Misery, Twilight and Beauty, so they're some real rays of sunshine here. Their show was quite fascinating and they managed to draw the crowd in with those dreamy atmospheres and ethereal riffs, they almost pulled you into a different sphere, just to jolt you out of it with a sudden blast of speed and screeched vocals. This jarring juxtaposition was as extreme as they come, but it somehow worked, especially when they would go back to this tranquil mood right after. Despite those outbreaks, Maledict are not a headbanging affair, but it's a spheric experience that really draws you in and transcends just being music, as stupid as that might sound. If you haven't checked them out yet, I urge you to do so, their latest album Liorzh Hanternoz is a real beauty!

Image

Alistair: It started to rain just before Forgotten Epitaph entered the stage and it was perfect. Gloomy, depressing weather for gloomy, depressing music. The quintet from Tovaca really did everything to bring down the mood and kill any kind of happiness that Horde of Hel had created. Slow, elegiac, heavy, this was doom to outdoom the end of the world. Aaron Glencross has this kind of odd mix between deep, clean vocals and this semi-spoken style that really lends itself to the minor keys and adds to this wholly negative picture they are painting. It sometimes makes it a bit difficult to tell where one song ends and the other one begins because they have zero crowd interaction or movement on stage, but songs like "In Your Darkest Hour" and "Monuments Crumble" are such intense compositions that you're like in a trance. They even played a brand new song, titled "Where Blackness is the Brightest Light", and it featured a guest performance by Mina Gyldenheim of Eternal Depths of Sorrow on violin, and if you thought that their other songs were depressive, this one takes it to the next level. A great show, doom at its best!

Serrated Scalpel
Image

Al: If anyone had fallen asleep during Forgotten Epitaph, Serrated Scalpel sure as hell woke them back up. They fired up the buzzsaw right from the get-go and you can't just hear their guitar sound, you feel it, in your guts, in your bones, everywhere. It's like a swarm of seriously pissed-off locusts that are coming for you. Muscially, there's not really much you can say other than that these guys are fury incarnate once they hit the stage and song titles like "Welcome to the Saw", "Abbatoir Blues" (hint, no blues anywhere in sight), "In Blood We Trust" or the band classic "Serrated Scalpel" do exactly what it says on the tin. Furious death metal with relentless blasts, some grindcore influences and just an intensity that's the sonic equivalent to a facelift is what the fans came for and it's what they got. A friend of mine once asked when the second song starts and I told him that they were halfway through the setlist, so yeah, Serrated Scalpel are not for the faint of heart or the ones looking for high musicianship and intricacy.

Phalanx
Image

Jason: Now this was the band I was waiting for: Phalanx. They've been around for over 30 years now, have 15 albums and they're as good as it gets (your mileage may vary). If you look at the band members, they're all well into their 50s and 60s, but what they might lack a bit in energy they make up with sheer presence. They have this commanding aura, especially singer Ciaran Henrix, standing at almost seven feet tall, long grey hair and a black trenchcoat, he could probably have the crowd to lay down or do jumping jacks and they would do it! Their set list was something special, too, because they took one song from each of their albums. So some classics were left out, but they played it chronologically, too, so it was fascinating to hear how their sound has adapted throughout the decades. They said that they hadn't played songs like "Crown of Thorns", "Raid the Castle" and "Sentinel" live in over 20 years, but that's what made it special for any Phalanx fan. They were one of the groundbreakers for traditional heavy metal in Tikariot and the fans really appreciated that tonight.

Ballistica
Image

Aldana: Talking about bands breaking ground, this was another one. Ballistica have taken the throne of Tikariotian thrash metal ever since Betrayal split up, and their new singer Francoise Mulhaine really kicked things up a notch for them, too. She has the classic powerful roar of Brian Dinham down pat, but she's also adding some growls for added spice. Through the years they've changed their sound a fair bit, moving on from the rumbling thrash of Warfare and Toxic, adding more grooves and slower speeds as well, which worked out well for them. They focused more on their newer material and I must say that "Army of the Damned", "Legion", "Race to the End" and "Baying for Blood" translate brilliantly to the stage and they show that speed is not everything and you can get far more heaviness when you slow things down. The riffing of Anton Bouillard and Jess McFarley is some of the biggest you'll hear anywhere and the rhythm section is tighter than a goose's ass, driving everything forward. Oh, one interesting detail, Francoise added some clean vocal sections in "Ruins of Terocon" and "Scorched Earth" and I must say that they worked really well! Maybe a sign of things to come? Hopefully, but all in all, Ballistica are an absolute force live and nobody left disappointed!

Image

Jakob: I was really looking forward to Fires of Asgard on a festival stage. I've seen them many times back home in Fort Viljan, but they were rumoured to have a special stage setup planned for their first headlining gig and boy, did they deliver! Half the stage was like the front of a dragon ship and they also had some guest musicians with folk instruments, and some actors dressed in leathers and chainmail and fire and everything! Just before they started to play, we could hear some thunder and I kid you not, the moment the intro stopped and the first song started, a bolt of lightning hit a tree nearby and the gig started, it was an omen!
Image

They kicked things off with "Pipes of Doom" where they had three bagpipers double the guitars and it just sounded awesome to hear that in perfect sync. And the dual vocals were great as well, with deep growls and great cleans, so they really were checking all the boxes. Then it started to rain and also get quite windy, but neither the band nor the fans cared. If anything, it just added to it like with the title track of their fourth album Plying the Oars. They really had the fans going with that heavy rhythm that you could envision them being on a dragon ship, rowing, and where other bands have moshpits, here people sat on the ground and started to mimic rowing, which was awesome! During "Battle of Skarraborg" they had the actors do a whole fighting scene with swords and shields and people really didn't care that they were getting soaking wet. One of the greatest moments was during the band hymn "Fires of Asgard" where the crowd took over the whole chorus, if that didn't give you goosebumps, you're dead.

I was a bit worried about the pyros with the wind and all, but they went off without a hitch and seeing the dragon head of the ship breathe fire was spectacular. They played for almost two hours and they had everything, from "On the Seas of Xandria" and "Vindarnas famn" over "Crimson Snow" to "Naglfar" and "Fjärrskådaren", it was one celebration of Viljan folk metal and a truly deserving headliner for day one!
