Spitballing here, but I may try to run some calcs and try to get some OSPI amendments in the next few weeks.

Also, if we continually are going to do divisions (which I enjoy!), We do need to update our tiebreakers.

H2H point differential may not be the best tiebreaker with divisions. It's kind of wonky, and leads to some bizarre IC game scenarios (see Tech v. FSU final game of the season this year, for example).

Things like divisional record should be used as a tiebreaker as well. So I will have an amendment to that effect coming down the pipeline as well.

Just trying to get discussion, if people are interested, as we proceed with this new format on how to continuously make it better.

Introducing RTC Points

Since OSPI is bad, bad, very bad, Banija and I decided to try and come up with a new formula to calculate the strength of college football teams. Here’s what we came up with:
RTC points have one main variable, mainly “VICTORY POINTS”. Teams acquire Victory Points in the following ways:
Home win: add 4 Victory Points
Road win: add 6 Victory Points
Home loss: subtract 5 Victory Points
Road loss: subtract 3 Victory Points¹
Across the entire season, these points are added up for each team.

For the next step, the Victory Points of all of the teams opponents are used. The average of these are “OPPONENT VICTORY POINTS (AVERAGE)”.²

Now, Victory Points and Opponent Victory Point Average (or “OVPA”) are added together and divided by two, resulting in the “RTC POINTS” by which teams would be ranked.

Calculation example: Elephant Valley University (NSCF27)

Elephant Valley University had 3 home wins (W7 Uo Alcuta, W9 NMU, W10 RUoN), giving them 3* +4 Victory Points [so far: +12]
They also managed two road wins (W3 RUoN, W6 Joe Gibbs), for 2* +6 Victory Points [so far: +24]
EVU had two home losses (W1 ULI, W4 Woodstock), for 2* -5 Victory Points [so far: +14]
The Red Elephants also led all of NSCF with six road losses (W2 NMU, W5 Upper Westside, W8 ULI, W11 Richardson, W12 TSU, W13 Cold Hill) for 6* -3 Victory Points, thus finishing with negative four Victory Points on the season.

Next, we calculate the WP for all their opponents: ULI (28), NMU (30), RUoN (-4), Woodstock (-16), Upper Westside (37), Joe Gibbs (-4), Alcuta (-22), ULI again (28), NMU again (30), RUoN again (-4), Richardson (35), Trent State (10), and Cold Hill (55). Adding those all together results in 203. Divided by 13 opponents, we have their OVPA of ~15.61.

The last step is the easiest: -4 Victory Points plus ~15.61 OVPA is ~11.61. Dividing that by two results in ~5.81, the RTC Points for EVU that cycle.

If we apply this logic to all teams for NSCF27, we reach the following final standings³:


Limitations, Acknowledgements, and Ellies:

From what We can see, this formula is at its worst at the very bottom of the rankings; however, since this isn’t really the relevant part of the standings, We believe this is an acceptable limitation.
Another issue stems from something eagle-eyed viewers may have already spotted: Richardson and Staramara had exactly the same RTC Point score. This is also theoretically possible under OSPI, although less likely. We do not know how likely exact ties would be in practise, but we may need some tiebreakers to resolve situations like this.
We would also need a new bowl game cutoff under this formula. We would recommend 0 at the very lowest, and 10 as the highest spot to consider.
There is also no automated sheet to easily calculate RTC Points. However, since no functional sheet currently exists for OSPI, either, this should not be a step back. SNL would volunteer to calculate all RTC Points by hand.

¹ We have the following reasons for choosing these digits. For one, we wanted (Home win + Road loss) to be equal to (Home loss + Road win). This means that these two cases result in the same Victory Points, different to OSPI, where the second case results in more than twice as much WP for reasons no one has been able to explain to me yet.
Additionally, we wanted the average of all possible results to be greater than 0 – this slightly rewards scheduling OOC games on average.
Thirdly, the different outcomes for home and road games still reward playing road games, regardless of result, rather than only rewarding road wins. You can see this in the standings, for example, by comparing Crown’s College (4 road games) and Green City (7 road games) - the latter have six additional VP despite finishing with the same record.
² This rewards teams that played better teams, or in other words, had a tougher schedule.
³ For any mistakes in the calculation, blame SNL. All mistakes in this table are their own.
