This kit continues on for its second of two cycles. The “double V” motif in a stylised pattern remains a prominent feature, on the traditional yellow shirt, black shorts and black socks. The away kit is a palette reversal, and elements between the two can be switched where needed. The third kit is in Anaia purple and gold, a tribute to the CAFA Cup 4, and now CAFA Cup 5 victory.
Manager – Augusto Rinaldi Age: 60 [SVG]
The winner of 2 consecutive CAFA Cup’s for Flavovespia, the manager who took them to their first and second world cups, the legacy the man from Savigliane has left on Flavovespia can’t be overstated. A great man manager, his squad’s always show great harmony and great morale. He’s also found a tactical setup that usually yields good results, and often once he gets Flavovespia into good form, they can be hard to break down.
1 Aarif Muhammad Age: 31 Position: GK Club: Rockridge Phoenix [BRE] Caps: 174 Goals: 0
Since World Cup Qualifiers 86, Aarif Muhammad has been the almost undisputed starting goalkeeper for Flavovespia. After a few years in his mid 20s where it seemed his potential would go unrealised, he’s become a key part of the Flavovespia side that’s hit new highs the past few years. He’s great all around, with strong shot stopping, handling and distribution, his only flaw is a tendency to be streaky in form. With Crewe and Foley’s impressive cameos in the Eagles Cup 15, Aarif Muhammad could maybe spend a few games on the bench this cycle, if he has a weak game.
12 Thomas Foley Age: 29 Position: GK Club: Bavingtor FC Caps: 2 Goals: 0
A star at club level for Bavingtor, Foley feels like the mind of player who in another era who have many more caps. His shot stopping and agility does rival Aarif Muhammad, although his distribution and positioning isn’t quite to the level of Aarif Muhammad. Foley however is a feisty character, seeing a red card in a CAFA Cup 5 as a substitute in a late row against Yesopalitha, and there’s something of a sense that could knock him down to third choice.
23 Nathan Crewe Age: 27 Position: GK Club: Marthorpe City FC Caps: 2 Goals: 0
A decent goalkeeper, although he’s not quite hit the levels of the likes of Aarif Muhammad. Has an absolute cannon of a right foot, to clear the ball downfield, and can read crosses and corners very well, hard to beat in the air, given he’s also 1.98m (6’6). However his pure shot stopping and agility sets him back a little from the other two goalkeepers in the squad. Generally considered a professional player, and a fairly gregarious personality.
2 David Lyons Age: 30 Position: LB Club: Maethoru SC [KOR] Caps: 163 Goals: 3
His role as captain after Steven Hall’s international career came to an end has been so vital to the national team. His extroverted, positive energy has been imparted on the team, bringing with it high morale and plenty of strong performances. On the pitch, he’s a tough tackling full back, who’s unlikely to venture forward too far, but can still go forward if need be. That said he’ll fully admit the focus of his play is to stop attacks down Flavovespia’s left hand side, something he’s solid at doing.
3 Andrew Dance Age: 27 Position: RB Club: Loxthorpe Rovers FC Caps: 95 Goals: 0
Despite his friendly appearance and demeanour off the pitch, Andrew Dance has a reputation for being a fierce defender, not afraid at all to put in a tough tackle here and there. Very much a full back who doesn’t tend to venture forward, or have much confidence doing so, but a challenge for opposition wingers to get by. Has often been in competition with David Blythe for the right back spot, although the two remain on good terms regardless.
4 Stuart Cookson Age: 29 Position: CB Club: Marthorpe City FC Caps: 115 Goals: 1
Cookson has grown into being a key defender for Flavovespia, whilst a search for a good partner to him has taken a bit of time, it’s been uncommon in recent years for Cookson to be out of the squad. A tall defender, he’ll never win prises for pace or agility, but his positioning is good enough it makes life tough for strikers, plus he can win aerial duels and tackles relatively well. Famously scored his one and only international goal in the 4-1 victory over The 14 Stars that sent Flavovespia to their first ever World Cup.
5 Paul Taylor Age: 24 Position: CB Club: AC Izotz Zubia [AUD] Caps: 50 Goals: 0
Plays for AC Izotz Zubia, a globally recognised team in one of the biggest leagues out there, a player with a growing profile even at just 24. Similar build and playstyle to Cookson, not particularly pacey or agile, but can be strong in challenges, and can play a good long ball out from deep. Has however a tendency to be rash and bad-tempered, and can be a bit outspoken as well now. Maybe not as bad yet as some past Flavovespian centre-backs, but he can see the red mist from time to time.
13 Kishan Rees Age: 30 Position: LWB Club: St John's Arsenal [QUE] Caps: 61 Goals: 0
A jack of all trades, Kishan Rees has provided a fair amount of depth to the Flavovespia squad in the past years, as well as a wing back option down the left, if the circumstances require it. For a defender, his passing, crossing and dribbling are impressive. However his marking and tackling are sometimes wayward, including a tendency to make rash challenges. Another of the Flavovespian players in the national side who play abroad, having played in Græntfjall and now Quebec.
14 Malcolm Beresford Age: 25 Position: CB Club: Bavingtor FC Caps: 8 Goals: 0
The jury still seems to be somewhat out on Malcolm Beresford, although many would also say centre back depth is a weakness for Flavovespia. A smaller centre back, what he lacks in size and strength, he makes up for in agility and ball playing ability. His skill in marking and tackling can’t be ignored however, just because he’s shorter, doesn’t mean he’s a pushover. If he turned his club form into international form, he’d be key for Flavovespia.
15 Daniel Lansdell Age: 31 Position: CB Club: Bavingtor FC Caps: 82 Goals: 1
A figure in many squads, but rarely as the out and out starter, and this seems to be the case again. He’s generally a jack of all trades centre back, but doesn’t quite have the mastery of the position compared to some of his Flavovespian peers. Spent many years at St Astons City, before finally taking the move to boost the already strong Bavingtor defence. Lansdell is also a bit of a contentious character from time to time, a fair few of his cards have come from ill-timed comments or off the ball incidents.
16 David Blythe Age: 33 Position: RWB Club: Kytheas Rivermen [TKT] Caps: 184 Goals: 0
If this cycle does turn out to be his last, as some pundits predict, he’ll leave the Flavovespia national team with his head held high. A solid professional player, he seems positive and can rarely be accused of not putting in enough effort. Typically seen as strong going forward and progressing the ball, he now has more of a focus on keeping back, and his experience in that regard is telling. Off the pitch, a quiet but friendly character.
24 Nazir Hussain Age: 23 Position: CB Club: Loxthorpe Rovers FC Caps: 0 Goals: 0
With an expanded squad, an extra spot for a defender opened up. With Augusto Rinaldi keen to take another centre back, it was Nazir Hussain who won out over Paul Amos for that spot. A bit of a surprise to some, Nazir Hussain plays a very robust, unflamboyant style of defending. A stocky build, he seems to be good at tackling, and getting the ball downfield, and whilst that isn’t a particularly extravagant skillset, he’s effective at least at club level in doing so. How many chances he’ll get will be interesting to see, as Flavovespia look to try and solve their centre back depth problem.
6 Jonathan Goldstone Age: 28 Position: CM Club: Bavingtor FC Caps: 42 Goals: 1
It was only in CAFA Cup 4 that Jonathan Goldstone made his debut, but he’s quickly cemented his spot as an important player in the midfield trio of Flavovespia. He’s tall and strong, which gives him a physical edge, but can also complement that with good passing and decent dribbling. His one weakness is a lack of pace on and off the ball. A resolute, character, who generally isn’t fazed by much around him.
7 Kieron Player Age: 29 Position: CDM Club: Coret Hawks [NPH] Caps: 162 Goals: 7
Once a player who seemed to have a rough time of it in Flavovespian colours, he’s turned it around to be a key piece of the midfield. Initially a central defensive midfielder, he can also play central midfield. His vision, long passing, and set pieces are almost second to none amongst Flavovespians, plenty of attacks can be setup by his quick, effective play in the middle of the park. He has quite a stern, serious appearance and isn’t particularly talkative, but is friendly to those he knows.
8 Robert Totten Age: 33 Position: CAM Club: Loxthorpe Rovers FC Caps: 133 Goals: 23
A flamboyant midfielder, both on and off the pitch. He provides the link between midfield and attack, and can still sit that little bit deeper in the formation Augusto Rinaldi plays. His hard work in the past year or two have helped him prolong his career, but at 33, this could well be his last cycle. His agility and pace are a bit lower now, but he can still pass very well, and has a dangerous long shot. Nevertheless, creeping concerns about his stamina could also see him move to the bench for some games.
11 Jonathan Bagshaw Age: 23 Position: RAM Club: AC Izotz Zubia [AUD] Caps: 98 Goals: 44
“Generational Talent” may be a controversial term to some, but if anyone deserves the label, it’s Jonathan Bagshaw. Only 23, he’s been a top performer for Flavovespia in their 2 CAFA Cup victories, scoring the winner in CAFA Cup 4, and at club level, he’s a starter for AC Izotz Zubia, having been the first Flavovespian ever sold for over £100m ($10m NSD). Fleet footed, nimble on and off the ball, and his shooting and passing can be pinpoint accurate, when he’s at his best, he’s one of the finest ever to come from Flavovespia.
17 David Clark Age: 34 Position: CDM Club: WSR AFC [KOR] Caps: 180 Goals: 17
David Clark has surprised a few by remaining in the national team for this cycle, but his performances on the pitch in recent years merit that. His stamina is still impressive for his age, as he can cover lots of the pitch looking to win the ball, an effective tackler as well with strong commitment. If, as many predict, this cycle is his last, he’ll be another player remembered fondly for everything he’s done these years. Personality wise, he can be a bit blunt and direct, but rarely dishonest.
18 David Wassell Age: 27 Position: CDM Club: Yerushalayim [ADB] Caps: 68 Goals: 0
With Clark and Totten getting towards the swansong of their international careers, Wassell will hope to take the chance to establish himself as a starter. A strong central defensive midfielder, he’s always willing to hassle the midfield to force a turnover of play. However he does have a tendency to leave the midfield a bit too stretched out, which can be exploited. That said, his reading of the game is getting better now. Generally considered adaptable as well, rare to suffer from travelling on away games.
19 Amrik Singh Age: 24 Position: RAM Club: Binclestead Wood FC Caps: 11 Goals: 2
An attacking midfielder with real pace and some flair, he’s unfortunate to be behind Jonathan Bagshaw in the depth chart which leaves him with limited caps. Adaptability to play as a right midfielder or central attacking midfielder could help in that regard. He can also get a lot of curve on the ball, and make deceptive plays. However he can sometimes miss the easier option, and has a tendency to be too aggressive in high pressing.
20 Andrew Thomas Age: 30 Position: LM Club: Marthorpe City FC Caps: 16 Goals: 2
Originally a left midfielder, his abilities in attack have seen him spend a lot of time as a left winger or left attacking midfielder. Good cameo appearances in the Eagles Cup 15 saves his spot in the side, although he’ll need to work hard to keep it in the coming years. Is somewhat one-footed, which means goalscoring from the left is at a premium for him, but can play in some absolutely killer crosses. Is also generally considered one of the more lively and popular dressing room characters, and is enthusiastic in interviews.
22 Robert Cooper Age: 31 Position: RAM Club: Bavingtor FC Caps: 16 Goals: 3
One of the most humble and likeable figures, many were pleased to see Robert Cooper return for the CAFA Cup 5 squad, and the good performances he put in made it all the sweeter. Listed as a right attacking midfielder, he’s practically as strong on his left foot as he is his right, and can play anywhere in attacking midfield. He’s not necessarily a speed demon in attack, but uses his moderate pace and good strength well, opening up space for himself or others. His determination on and off the field is well known and well regarded as well.
25 Martin Edwards Age: 25 Position: CDM Club: Langmere Green Rovers FC Caps: 0 Goals: 0
One of 3 debutants in this squad, all coming from the expansion to 26 players. Martin Edwards has had to wait a little while to make the national team, but will look to make an impression, with spots in the midfield likely to open up. Edwards is one from the school of tough battles in the midfield, Langmere Green Rovers and Flavovespia fans have likened him to Henrik Jensen. Despite his reputation for playing close to the line when going for the ball, he’s got an accurate pass on him at short range, even if his longer range passing can be a little wayward. Has a reputation for being outspoken, although Augusto Rinaldi in the past has calmed down some of the more hot-headed players
9 Michael Cole Age: 29 Position: CF Club: North Hall [BRE] Caps: 143 Goals: 72
A striker originally, he often plays on the left of the attacking trio for Flavovespia as well. He is speedy and agile, and has a fierce shot to go with it. His only knock is a bit of a tendency to be selfish, although when he’s on good form, he can be very tricky for defences to handle. Whilst he still has a long way to go to match the 135 goals Scott Coleman scored, he could feasibly get there. The son of former Flavovespia manager Nick Cole, he has inherited his father’s short tempered behaviour.
10 Adrian Jones Age: 30 Position: CF Club: 1830 Cathair [AUD] Caps: 71 Goals: 36
He may look like he’s built to play in defence, but Adrian Jones is definitely a striker. Playing in the centre of the attacking trio, his false nine style allows the wide forwards to cut inside. However Adrian Jones can’t be discounted as a goalscoring threat either, especially in the air, but also with both feet, including his weaker left foot. Hi form has been a bit streaky the past few tournaments, and he’ll be under pressure with other strikers in the squad vying for his spot. One of 3 Flavovespians in the national team who play club football in Audioslavia.
21 Richard Birmingham Age: 21 Position: CF Club: Langmere Green Rovers FC Caps: 6 Goals: 1
A highly regarded young striker in Flavovespia, he’s now playing for Langmere Green Rovers, hoping to make a big name for himself in the Flavovespian Super League. He’s a typical target man style striker, eschewing pace and agility for strength up front, with a powerful shot and header to go to boot. So far, almost all of his caps have come from the bench, but he has scored when he’s started a game. One to watch for the future, even if he’s still likely to be a rotation option this tournament.
26 Andrew Brocklehurst Age: 28 Position: CF Club: Loxthorpe Rovers FC Caps: 0 Goals: 0
Another debutant in this team, and a late bloomer making it at 28. From the youth ranks at Loxthorpe Rovers, he’s worked his way up to be a key part of their team. Now, he gets the chance to try and make a break at international level. An unusual striker in some regards, is shooting and goal-scoring record can be a bit mediocre, but his hold-up play and ability to play in wide forwards or attacking midfielders is great. Also known for his long blond hair, kept in a headband when playing, and being a bit glitzy off the pitch.
Flavovespia’s default formation is a 4-3-3. The emphasis is on direct football, sacrificing possession for quick play forward. The back four tend to sit deep, and look to quickly get the ball away if they regain possession. Unless losing, it’s unlikely the full backs venture forward in open play. The midfield trio are divided between 3 roles, one who’s a ball winning midfielder, a playmaker who’s usually the best passer of the ball, and a roaming midfielder, given more freedom to attack and defend from the front. In attack, the centre forward sits a little deeper, trying to create space to allow the wide forwards to cut inside. The wide forwards however, must also be able to play in balls centrally to the centre forward, or roaming midfielder.
