The Salisbury Conference (Very, very OPEN, MT)

Postby Reformed Britannia » Sun Dec 05, 2010 2:01 pm

There are only a few ground rules. Number one, no one-liners...and that's about it. You may also skip directly to the location where the conference is being held, as those 'requesting permission to land' things can get pretty tedious and just stall things. ICly, limousines would be there to transport arriving delegates to the conference area, so don't worry about transportation on the ground.

OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT, TO THE NATIONS OF THE WORLD
Image

The state of international affairs, as many foreign heads of state and other officials may recognise, has become remarkably muddled as of late. Up until this point the world has enjoyed a state of relative peace and stability, which is now being threatened by the rising tide of chaos and war. The global balance of power has shifted in some manner, and we find ourselves in a world very different from the one we lived in yesterday.

In the spirit of promoting better understanding between the existing powers of the world and emergent ones, the Britannian government has opted to call for an international conference at the Salisbury Palace, a royal residence a few miles outside of the city of Salisbury. This meeting will, hopefully, allow the nations of the world to develop their foreign policy in accordance with the chaos that is overtaking the globe.

In light of recent global events, the primary issues to be discussed are as follows:
-Terrorism
-Trade agreements/economics
-Keeping the peace on a global scale, perhaps through an organisation

Delegates and representatives from all nations are more than welcome to attend. However, due to a recent spate of stabbings, disembowelments, shootings, decapitations, kidnappings, muggings, gunfights, lynchings, heists, catastrophic explosions and various other inconveniences at Britannian-held conferences, no weapons aside from purely ceremonial ones will be permitted. Each nation may send up to two delegates, and up to one guard per delegate.

There will be refreshments.

Sincerely,
The Britannian Government

It was a relatively quiet day in the Salisbury Palace; then again, it always was. The palace was rarely ever used by the royal family-if they went there, it was to enjoy the tranquillity and seclusion that the relatively isolated palace offered. So it was no surprise that it was picked as the location for the coming conference-the delegates wouldn't be pestered by all the hustle and bustle of Kensington, or even the strong, salty smell of the air in the port city of Salisbury. It was, to put things lightly, in the middle of nowhere.

James Roberts, the war hero-turned-diplomat, leaned up against the outer gate of the palace, looking at the line of Horse Guards who stood ready to greet the arriving delegates. Roberts had always been astonished at the discipline of the unit-as an ex soldier, he thought that the regular army discipline was strict. But these Horse Guards-you could pull a gun on one and they probably wouldn't even flinch. Well, they would definitely move, but it would be to grab their holstered .455 Revenant pistols and blow a grapefruit-sized hole in the chest of their assailant.

Shaking his head, James walked into the palace itself. It was not as elegant or refined as the Summer Palace in Kensington, but it had a certain 'country manor' charm to it. And it was certainly spacious. He hoped the delegates wouldn't think too lowly of the government-or worse, the monarchy-because the building wasn't exactly the most glamorous around. Taking a seat at the conference table, he began rifling through a sheaf of papers that had been given to him by the government, detailing what Britannia hoped to accomplish in this meeting of nations.

Qatarab had sent two delegates to the Salisbury Conference. One was an economist while the other was a diplomat. They were escorted by two Jannisaries in ceremonial clothing and carried a ceremonial Kilij which was made with silver, trimmed with gold and embedded with jewels. The plane of the Qatarabi delegates landed at the airport and the delegates got out to enter their limo which would drive them to the conference manor in an isolated part of the country. They were planning to discuss more on economy and terrorism, though they've yet to have experienced any sort of terrorism in Qatarab.

Opetis arrived outside the Palace. Caesar was currently busy - but his second in command was usually available. He never had much to do - Caesar liked a hands on approach. He had a single guard with him - one of the Praetorians. He could kill a man with his barehands - and yet he carried a pistol. He didn't look very menacing - but that'd be a mistake. Opetis himself was a fairly approachable man, though he was as experienced at diplomacy as anyone. He walked up the steps of the palace, eager to meet anyone who would benefit Legeonas.

The limo pulled up to the palace/manor and the two diplomats noticed that the host had arrived and so had another guest. The economist,Mustafa Ibn Hazim, and the diplomat,Hussein Al-Rashid Ibn Omer, both got out of their vehicle and were followed by the two Jannisaries that would escort them. They both looked up and saw the Horse guards,as they were called around here, waiting. Their discipline seemed to be very strict and very strong. The two Jannisaries didn't seem too interested. They both had massive hands and could gut a cow with their bare hands. The two Jannisaries were of high rank Equivalent to a Lt.General.

James drummed his fingers on the table, still poring over the papers that had been given to him by the government. He walked over to a nearby table, where a large group of crystal-clear champagne flutes were waiting. His hand quickly snaked out and seized the sea-green champagne bottle by the neck, and James gingerly hefted it into his grasp. Instead of crudely pushing the cork out of the unopened bottle, James held the cork and rotated the bottle at an angle in order to ease out the stopper-a method that substantially reduced the risk of spilling or spraying any champagne, and also stopped the cork from flying out of the bottle with speed. James recalled that the Jbeilis referred to the quieter pop or "sigh" made while opening the bottle that way as 'le soupir amoureux', or 'the loving whisper'.

Smiling, he poured himself a glass of the perfectly fermented wine, and lifted it to his lips in order to take a sip. Just then, a Horse Guard walked into the room, saluted smartly, and spoke.
"Some of the limousines are beginning to arrive. We'll be showing them into the conference room shortly." The manner in which the man spoke was very staccato, almost robotic. He must take his job seriously, James thought wistfully, sitting down at the table once more.

Outside the building, the Horse Guards waited to greet the arriving diplomats. Once they got out of their vehicle, they would be escorted to the conference room, and when enough of them had arrived, the conference would begin. Opetis, Ibn Hazim and Ibn Omer were saluted by one of the Horse Guards, who opened the main door to the palace. Two other guards held the doors open, while the lead guard, sabre drawn, turned his back to the delegates.

"Right this way, gentlemen," the trooper said smartly, strutting down the hall to the conference room with almost regimental pomp. It wasn't far from the entrance-as a matter of fact, only a few metres-and when the guard got there, he opened it for the delegates and then stood rigidly at attention, waiting for them to enter.

Once the letter was aquired, Lord Christian set off for Britannia, where he did shortly arrive in their airspace. The Imperial Kylarnatian Plane landed safely on the open airstrip, where he waited to come to a complete stop before he stepped out and waited to be greeted.

Mustafa and Hussein followed the Horse Guard and walked through the door. They both were very impressed with those guards. They seemed to be the definition of a true soldier. As soon as they entered they saw that the conference room had a nice country style to it. They both admired the architecture of the building.

Opetis walked into the room, surprised by the heat. He looked around for the reprensative for Brittania, eager to get underway. The cause was quite close to his heart - peace and economic prosperity meant a lot more to him then anything else they had come to discuss.

It was a busy day at the Parliamentary Palace. All of the members and the Parliamentary Electees were very busy talking amongst themselves. King Andrew smiled as he looked down at them. Then ,as was custom, the Parliamentary Judge hit his gravel three times.

"We will now begin this weeks meeting." The Judge said. "What are this weeks issues that must be dealt with by the Parliament?"

The Parliamentary Electee of Foreign Affairs stood up. "The Imperial Federation of Reformed Britannia is holding a conference in Salisbury. The purpose is to deal with the current issues of terrorism, Global economics and world peace. I suggest we send somebody." The Electee of Foreign Affairs said.

"Who do you suggest?" Prime Minister Greene asked.

"Why, my self of course! I am the one who deals with foreign relation." The Parliamentary Electee of Foreign Affair said.

"Now wait just a damn minute!" The Electee of Defense said as he got up. "I say we send me! If they start talking about terrorism you'll be completely lost!"

"And you will be equally lost in the world of Economics! I should go." said the Electee of Trades, getting up.

Everyone in the parliament began to argue. "Enough!" King Andrew shouted. "I will go. This won't be the first time I've gone to a meeting of nations." he said with a smile. "Besides I'm sure my good friend Prime Minister Greene can run the country while I'm gone." He continued. "Everyone in favor of me going say "aye"" he said. Everyone but the Electees of Trades and Foreign relations said "Aye". "Good. Then its settled. I'll go write the letter now." King Andrew said as he left the room.

Dearest Reformed Britannia

I. King Andrew of Afen, would be honored to go there personally. I will be there with the ceremonial cutlass. I hope this is okay.

Lufenia, Luciratus

President Alistaire sat contemplating the contents of the latest dispatch he had recieved from Reform Britannia. "It appears manifest that specific countries have deemed it a necessity- after gazing apathetically upon the grotesque violence and absurd chaos which has assailed the beleaguered world for a near eternity- to ensure some semblance of peace, prosperity, and order. While I am keen to eschew foreign entanglement, it would be a horrid folly not to entertain the greater common wellfare of the Most Serene Republic and attend to these matters. Excuse me, Mr. Yossan, could you endeavor to transfer this mildly elegant letter to the office of foreign affairs?" "Yes, Mr. President," Herman Yossan, the secretary of state, laughed, "It is my job, after all. Do you plan on attending?" "Most certainly," Alistaire answered. "Even if it violates your priniciples of isolationism?" Herman asked. "My principle responsibility, as delegated by the people of Luciratus, is to reign in the greater interest of the nation, regardless of my own proclivities," Hawthorne explained, "While I detest, at times, the ceaseless violence and brutality which inhabits the world presently, I retain no vendetta against specific cultures or individuals- excluding, of course, those who threaten the sanctity of the state."

"I see," Yossan replied, "Who will accompany you to the conference?" "To be sincerely honest, I have yet to acertain precisely whom will attend to this matter besides myself," Alistaire muttered, "I presume the politicians, including yourself, would be loathe to embark due to the inception of the Hanukkah and Christmas holidays, correct?" "Your statements are irreputably confirmed by our laxness," Yossan joked, "My apologies, Mr. President." "Perhaps a member of the philosophical coterie would appreciate the concept of this conference and endeavor to entertain my company," Alistaire mused, "but whom?" The president reflected on the state of affairs within the social class known pretentiously as the "intellectuals" of which he, himself, was a member. They were fiercely divided between the Stoics and the Epicureans- a minor schism which reflected the factitious nature of Luciri society as a whole. The Stoics, the group which Hawthorne most supported, were dedicated to the principles of duty, virtue, and emotional reserve. The Epicureans were enamored to the ideals of Epicurus- and lauded pleasures of the mind and body as the greatest good. Both ideologies often clashed within the upper echelons of society, and even within the confines of the political system. However, ideology normally remained a secondary concern within the Moderate Intellectual Party. "I shall not misconstrue the current circumstances which blight our typically unabashed neutrality," Alistaire finally announced, "It is an indelible necessity to placate the feuding ideological factions within our society. I believe that the selection of an earnest Epicurean would suffice to resolve the matter- for some time." "Who would you select exactly, sir?" Herman Yossan questioned him. "A multitude of conferences and festivities have recommended my ears to one James Cassander," Hawthorne stated, "His intellectual peers laud him a genius of some repute and a paragon of Epicurean values, both of which I deem pretentious notions enabling the desolation of society and earnest virtue."

"I comprehend your meaning, Alistaire," Herman chuckled, "I would enjoy seeing a debate between Mr. Cassander and yourself. You are both young, reflective, and witty." "How infantile is the harrowing age of twenty six?" Hawthorne asked whimsically, "A man of proper age and values might better serve the state than the eldest individual in the nation. A firm dedication and solid resolve is all that such a station requires." "You are young," Yossan contended, "Though, your philosophical banter does not discriminate to age or class. How quaint." "Each individual merely serves in his or her own allotted capacity, which is embued in them through nature," Alistare replied, "No station warrants merit nor is any excellent conducting of oneself deserving of undue lauding or praise, which leads more often the lackadaisical and lax propensities which dwell in one's heart to awaken." "So we are in agreeance?" Herman chuckled. "Indeed, we are," Hawthorne laughed, "Please, do pardon my rambling tendencies." "I shall take my leave of you, presently," Yossan excused himself, "Please, tell Megara I wish her well. Will the two of you visit us around Hanukkah?" "Please, do ensure that your lights are kindled this year," Alistaire laughed, "Otherwise, we shall be entrapted in the most interesting situation that afflicts us on the prior celebration." "I will," Herman mumbled, blushing deeply. "Naturally, we will attend to you," Hawthorne continued, "We construe you as our parents, our advisors, our mentors- after Mithridates, naturally." "He is coming too!" Yossan exclaimed, "Sarah is muttering about how she will not permit him to continue moping about poor Miriam." "Indeed, mourning does not assist an individual or society," Alistaire agreed, "I will speak with him briefly of this matter. Good afternoon."

OFFICIAL COMMUNIQUÉ
The Most Serene Republic of Luciratus

Addressed To: The Britannian Government
Addressed From: Alistaire Hawthorne, President of the Most Serene Republic of Luciratus
Subject Matter: Attendance to Your Esteemed Conference
Encryption: Absent

My dear sirs and ma'ams,

I must first laud you upon your astute perception in discerning the increasingly adverse circumstancs which blight the beleaugered nations and peoples of the worlds. To be certain, this situation is overtly deplorable to the multitudes of governances which seek to ensure the continued peace, prosperity, and security of their respective designated countries. Secondly, I would sincerely congratulate you on the establishment of a conference which will hopefully indiscriminately develop peace and prosperity among national entities of various governance, history, social constructions, and cultural norms- as well as fostering other goals and promoting further agendas beneficial to all. Finally, I would humbly request permission to attend said conference to express the primary concerns which assails us all presently. These troubling times require the utmost philosophical reflection, political insight, sincere devotion, and precise action. All traits must be attributed to one who wields governance of any noteriety if he or she is to best champion the inherent interests of their nation. Cooperation will further assist in our aspirations for solidarity, security, prosperity, and peace- or so it can be postulated. Natural processes are not specifically inclined to the undue level of violence and chaos which more human and cultural designs presently breed. Whatever course destiny and free choice have determined to trek, we should be likewise prepared to accept unchangeable warrants, know which might be altered, and retain the force of will to transfigure our fates. Reason dictates this as a truism, one which I shall gladly champion. Good day.

Sincerely,
Alistaire Hawthorne

Salisbury, Reformed Britannia

Two men adorned in travelling cloaks reminiscent of the Victorian period in Great Britain alighted from their private jet liner. Their appearaces were as different and contrasted as night and day. Alistaire Hawthorne's scarlet-brown hair flashed brilliantly in the light of the sun, seeming to capture the essence of summer. He was a moderately attractive figure- in a non-traditional manner of speaking. He was not overbearingly masculine, nor predisposing, nor haughty. He merely was- without regard or discrimination for those who witnessed his peculiar brand of handsome. James Cassander was even more stunning. His hair was similarly brown, but nearly black in its darkness. His demeanor was one of mild extravagent elegance and he seemed paritally haughty and uncompromisingly philosophical. He was relatively more masculine than his companion, but still not overly so. The men were deep in conversation, that much would be evident to any individuals who observed them. In fact, the discourse was quite heated. Despite their passion, they appeared civil and did not infringe upon the peace of the port city. The serene atmosphere, in fact, seemed to mold itself around them, preserving this transient moment for eternity in the psyches of any who might witness the peculiar scene.

"A proper restraint against pleasure is an absolute necessity," Alistaire explained, "Unconfined pleasure sires violent passions, which must be eschewed at the cost of character, virtue, and stability." "Moderation of pleausre is certainly keen," James agreed, "However, undue restraint of such natural human propensities tend to beget discontent, which in turn births chaotic emotions. I much prefer moderation than stifling and the subsequent misbalance it births." "However," Hawthorne asserted, "The mere pleasure garnered from the proper attribution of an individual's actions to his duty and virtue should suffice to satiate any pleasures necessitated. Virtue is, after all, the zenith of human contemplation, incomparable to any other whimsical proclivity prone to men." "If men are so keen to virtue," Cassander contended, "Then, why do they so often forsake its values? It does not seem proper that such a natural course is so carelessly abandoned at the slightest prodding. However, men encase themselves in an inshatterable armor of pleasure, and thus it seems manifest that pleasure is the dominant virtue." "Does the garish ease with which one ideology is adopted ensure its inarguable merits?" Alistaire questioned, "The ideals of various philosphies both religious and secular could handily refute such whimsical notions. Indeed, multitudes of individuals flock to the beleaguered and cliched banner of Epicurus, but does their self-fullfillment outshine or outweight that of the Stoics? I think not." "Does not pleasure equate happiness?" James asked. "I do not believe it to do so," Hawthorne replied. "It seems that my prior argument that pleasure equates self-fullfillment in moderation is by far more linear than your contention that earnest submission to social obligations breeds happiness," Cassander muttered. "It is indeed so," Alistaire asserted, "Does the directness with which joviality is attained necessarily denote its seemly qualities? The mere process of attainment yields more pleasure than the act of consumation itself. I do believe we approach our hosts." "We shall continue our discussion, later?" James asked. "Most assuredly," Alistaire responded.

Both men climbed into the vehicle and merely observed their surroundings as they were driven to the inaptly named Palace of Salisbury. The building was not garish or lavish in any manner, which did not particularly phase Alistaire- but did partially suprise James. The Luciri were acclimated to their own brand of Greco-Roman architecture, but similarly valued the accomplishments of various other cultures. After all, each nation could teach its fellows new standards of accomplishment and excellence. They both exited the car, offering a subtle word of gratitude to their driver, who both respected immensely. They approached the building silently intent upon their mission and finally entered its unharrassed doors. The cool air felt soft and tingly against their sweat-drenched skin. "Salutations, ladies and gentlemen," Alistaire announced, "It is a sincere pleasure to make your acquaintance. I am Alistaire Hawthorne, president of The Most Serene Republic of Luciratus, at your virtuous disposition." "Good afternoon," James introduced himself, "It is likewise a charming experience to endure myself to you all. I am James Cassander."

Reformed Brittania:

The Crontorian Delegation, after arriving at the airport on Crontor One, stepped out onto the landing ramp to survey the country they had just arrived in. President Christian Cranico stepped out first, blinking in the sunlight, before proceeding down the ramp. He was immediately followed by Supreme Commander Rockepeller, adorned in his full orange military suit and cap, his rows of medals gleaming on his chest. He too squinted and proceeded down the ramp, followed by a member of the Crontorian Secret Service, who, adjusting his earwig, hurried down the steps behind the two leaders.

The orange presidential limo was brought around right away, and Rockepeller and Cranico hopped right in followed by Agent Blackwell, who had been selected for this mission, as Agent Mire was driving. They were instructed that they had to leave their weapons in the car, but each was trained in extensive forms of unarmed combat, so they saw little issue.

Agent Mire began to drive as the two heads of states talked amongst themselves.

"Popouli Vox has not threatened the nation, but we need to take everystep necessary!" argued Rockepeller who was typing up something on his labtop.

"I know, but we have already had teo instances where Maritime Guard vessels have fired on civilian ships, in one case killing 4 people. Just because we are part of the Steel Pact doesn't make us a target!" shot back President Cranico, sipping a latte and trying to enjoy the city.

"If they get us, they ruin Pact funds. Listen, that is why we are here, to find a way to deal with these scumbags!"

"Excuse me," said Agent Mire, adjusting her rear view mirror, "Mr. President, Supreme Commander, we are here."

"Thank you," said Rockepeller, shooting Cranico a dirty look, which Cranico caught. The kept the stare for a second more, and then burst out laughing. They were still laughing when they approached the guards, who gave them rather strnage looks, but then excprted them to the conference hall.

King Andrews private plane arrived in Salisbury. Looking around the airport he saw it was nothing special. It wasn't big or grand but it was... functional. After getting through immigration he went to the front of the Airport where a limo was waiting. "Take me to the Salisbury Palace." he told the driver. The driver nodded and drove him to his destination. There he got out and awaited further instructions or a guide.

Official Notice of the Chancellery Kingdom of Ferkas
Image

The Chancellery Kingdom of Ferkas also recognizes the grave risks inherent in the world which we inhabit, and applaud the efforts of the Nation of Britannia to right these wrongs. Therefore, in an effort to show our support for such an idea we shall be sending a delegate to attend your conference.

Signed,
Lord Minister Alexader Mikilov, Ministry of State

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The flight had gone smoothly, he had even manged to finish a few reports during the several hours in the air. But now it was time for Nikolai Noversky to disembark. He stood and stretched, the picked up his suitcase and headed towards the ramp. Exiting the plane the Brittanian car was waiting for him. He was traveling alone, the Ministry of State saw little risk in this.

As the car approached the place of the meeting Noversky looked up at the rather large manor house in front of him. He thought to his self "Not the most imposing of structures, is it?" He was much more use to the governmental buildings back home, large stone affairs. Especially now, with the resurgence of the Monarchy, there were plans on the board for some truely inspiring structures.

But he remembered what he had read on the way over, about this mostly being a summer home. So that might offer some reasoning, even if the current Monarchial summer home in Ferkas was built more like a small castle. If nothing else though this place seemed well kept, very well kept, and plenty spacious.

The car drove through the gates and came to a hault infront the of the large doors. Noversky waited for an attendent to open the door for him, taking that moment to adjust his tie. Well some other monarchys might consider a full ceremonial outfit, complete with sword and medals, the proper outfit for such an occasion, Ferkas did not. Maybe if it came sign for a major treaty agreement, or a large occasion, but not for a conference.

He payed almost no attention to the guards as he was taken inside. He came from a nation which had just been rocked by war, and even though these men seemed very dedicated and disciplined, he wasn't overly worried. He waited to be directed to the conference room.

OOC:Consider the delegates automatically transp[orted to the palace, for simplicity purposes
IC:
As the delegates arrived, Roberts stood up from his chair and greeted them with a simple bow.
"Hello, esteemed delegates. May I invite you to take a seat?" James motioned to the chairs which had been arrayed around the table, and flashed a set of perfectly white teeth at the guests. Setting the champagne flute aside for the time being, he stood still while he waited for the guests to seat themselves, as any gracious host would do.

At the airfield, a limousine rushed out to pick up Lord Christian, as the driver was aware the meeting was due to start very soon and he didn't want anyone to be late.

President Cranico and Supreme Commander Rockepeller took their seats, smiling politely at the host. Rockepeller saluted the Reformed Brittanian delgate, and then took his seat, pulling up his labtop in order to take notes on the events. President Cranico looked around, noting which nations the other delgates had come from, as he waited for eerything to start.

To: The Imperial Federation of Reformed Britannia.
From: The Autocratic Federation of Xyliod.

The Autocratic Federation would be happy to attend The Salisbury Conference, our Ambassador is already on the way to conference, we have sent one member of the Military Intelligence Bureau to act as his security.

The Federation looks forward to a full and frank discussion with the attendants of the Conference on all the issues that are raised.

---

The limousine (which had two Xyliodan flags flying from its bonnet) slowly rolled to a stop at the outer gate of the Palace, the security guard got out of the right passenger side of the limo and walked over to the left where he opened the door and Philip O. Randolph stepped out.

They started to make their way towards the meeting room in the palace.

OOC: I assume the security guard is allowed a lethal weapon...
