ARCILUCO, AMATHIA-

The Tengarian-Amathian video game company Aquila, most known for its recent internationally successful game Orbis (co-developed with Senrian company Nishizumi Gaming and co-produced with Raidenco), has finally announced a release date for the game's fourth region, Geguo, on Friday January 13th 2023, a full week after Theophany (in Eastern countries called Epiphany). This would also mark one full week between the trailer and the release.

In an official announcement (released at the same time as another stream by Raidenco), the developers first streamed, then released a preview video showing the different features of the new regions, briefly showing some of the new characters the players would meet in the region, as well as teasers of the story that would be presented in the most recent release. This follows the procedure which they have used previously, and with the release of the trailer came the announcement of the release date as well. Following the separate dubs which are supported by the game, the video is available in Tengarian, Amathian, Senrian, Gaullican, Estmerish, Shanghean, Soravian and Ziba, or in other languages with subtitles.

The trailer focused on the region of Geguo, which is the fourth region to be released to this date. Each region released so far has a general different artistic inspiration- Vetia, the first was modeled after Southern Europe with heavy Solarian and medieval influences; Satsuma, modeled after a mythological version of Feudal Senria; and Mendemia after the Asterias, with a focus on individuality and innovation. Geguo, from what has been revealed prior to this according to information from the developers, is going to take as its inspiration the countries of Southeastern Coius- Dezevau, Lavana, Haycinia and others.

The tailer revealed that Geguo is modeled largely after rainforest, with remarkable biodiversity and new features. The developers have said that much of the terrain will focus having several layers vertically, with each layer having differences to in order to change the immersion- natural and man-made structures and branches the treetops, the plant-rich ground and a fungal underground system. The underground cave network is going to be the largest in any region released so far; helping to provide more interesting exploration for the player around the map. The region also showed signs of ornamentation and decoration, with much effort going into making the environment beautiful and interesting. In order to make the rainforest more interesting, the developers added more flora and fauna then any other region previous.

The region also features different groups which comprise Geguo, including (as the game's official description says) "bright-eyed canopy-dwelling Jedubians, the soberly studious Trunkdwellers, the mercantile caravan-borne Mhaunio, and the mysterious Spelunceans". Each of these was shown in brief, and the different tribes each have unique architecture reflecting the terrain around them, with both real and fantastical inspirations. The Jedubians live in light and expansive structures which go through the tree-tops of the jungle, . The Trunkdwellers make their abode within the trees on the ground, carving out intricate homes out of the wood to match their strong values. The Spelunceans use the caves as their home, and make a living in the darker recesses of the earth. The Mhanuio's lifestyle, widely nomadic, showed the life of mobile caravans moving from place to place to sell their wares. There is more to come, but the trailer showed tangibly where and how the groups function, at least in part.

From these peoples, the the teaser showcased new characters to be introduced in the first few updates- Assyl, the Jedubian warrior who brings death to his enemies from afar; Aisana, a Mhanuio caravan leader who wants to succeed but looks out for the poor and needy; Nani, the quiet Speluncean with a mysterious background. These will be the first characters native to Geguo since Malo, has been around since the beginning release as part of the main cast; Malo was a wandering Trunkbearer scholar coming to study in Vetia before getting involved in the Argentia crisis, and proving his worth as a hero.

As for story, the trailer gave a few important hints of what was to come. The central story will likely focus around the different claimants to the position of archon, something which has plagued the region since the returning of the previous archon the soil and the lack of solid proof of the identity of the new archon. Dialogue has mentioned this, and many of the character's quotes from the trailer suggest that rival factions will be promoting their own claimant. Some have speculated that the Society of the Redeemed, who have so far been the game's primary antagonists, will serve as an instigator behind the dispute, fanning the flames of descent.

This news comes as a pleasant surprise to many throughout world this Theophany season, since it has been almost six months since the game's last release of Mendemia in July of 2022. Fans from across the world shared their excitement over chirpr over the new release, with eager excitement for the game's 5th major installment. "The region is so beautiful", one tweeted. "This might be the best looking region yet". Other praised on the characters and their designs, expressing wish to acquire them, or to see how the story would progress in this region. Overall, the responses were very positive.

However, the announcement of the release also angered or annoyed others. One embittered commentator replied: "I really hope I stop seeing things about this stupid game. You all need to touch grass". However, the majority of detractors appeared to be those who have a previous negative attitude towards the game, which is a common thing for any game which has connexions to controversial Senrian animation, something which many people have a irrational bias against.

Despite what the naysayers may think, this game is unlikely to go away any time soon. Its global player-base continues to grow, and the new update might succeed in interesting players more from South-Eastern Coius, or anywhere in the world. As the final week commences before the release of Geguo, the players are looking for another memorable installment to the game.

Party hardliners take over in Nainan
Srisuriyothai Prinya| 7 January 2023

After his attempt to oust the NPSL's General Secretary, Lê Tranh Lộc was under scrutiny from the public and his party. Protests and political infighting have ended with his arrest by the Van Dieu agency. This comes right after he was made to resign by a vote of no confidence in the People's Senate.

Lê Tranh Lộc and Quách An Tương in 2020

Today the political infighting in Nainan has reached it's most intense as now former State Director Lê Tranh Lộc was arrested by the Van Dieu police agency, the country's political enforcement agency. This had lead to counter-protests against the arrest by the Van Dieu. The Van Dieu also arrested some of Lộc's key allies in government, including some of his Central Council and Cabinet members.

The political infighting in Nainan has been going on for years but became worse in the last two months. In early December Premier Quách An Tương, a member of the hardliner faction of Nainan, proposed to ban factionalism with harsh punishments for those who stray from party lines. Lộc was a member of the more reformist faction of the government. This passed the People's Senate but failed to pass the Central Council. After this, Lộc held a vote in the Central Council to oust NPSL General Secretary Hoàng Lan Mai, leader of the hardliners, she is the daughter of the founder of the NPSL and Harmonious Republic, Hoàng Viện Trai.

This vote failed to pass the Central Council, and pro-hardliner protesters and politicians called for the State Director to resign for "betraying the party". The People's Senate earlier today voted to oust him from his position in a vote of no confidence, which passed, he was made to resign.

Less than an hour after his resignation the Van Dieu made the arrest of former State Director Lê Tranh Lộc less than hour after he was ousted, he had reportedly been made to step down, he was stated to have been arrested for treason against Nainan.

The Van Dieu also arrested some of his allies in government, including some of his cabinet members and allies in the Central Council. The Van Dieu and police have also begun to arrest protesters, regardless of side. Quách An Tương has taken over as the new State Director under the rules of succession, and his previous position of Premier will be filled by General Secretary Hoàng Lan Mai.

Outsiders have claimed this to be a takeover by the hardliners to take control of Nainan. Many claim the Van Dieu and military of Nainan have been siding with the hardliners for quite some time, and these arrests are heavily in their political interest. The government will likely finally ban factionalism in the party under Quách An Tương, seeing a more authoritarian shift in Nainan take shape.

Government announces scheme of targeted tax cuts for retailers who slash prices for staple goods

The government has announced a scheme for 2023 that will see tax cuts for major retailers who reduce their prices on staple goods. The primary target of the scheme will be supermarket chains according to a government memo released to senators ahead of the first session following the end of the Nativity Recess. It is hoped the scheme will further reduce costs of living for Etrurian families and boost consumption.

The memo describes the scheme as a “proposal for the targeted reductions of financial transaction, value added tax and corporation taxes on corporate retailing groups that reduce their prices on staple goods below inflation and price indices. The principal recipients of this scheme will be supermarket retailers, with a focus on staple foods, sanitary goods and baby formula.”

The memo further said, the Federal Service for Public Finance and the Federal Ministry for Finance will “work hand in hand to establish the scheme on a case-by-case basis with retailers. The degree of targeted tax reductions will be determined by the counterparty’s reduction in wholesale prices for staple goods. The scheme will also mandate legal protections to guarantee the maintaining of agreed price cuts.” These legal guarantees will include immediate expulsion of the counterparty from the scheme and a sizeable fine should the retailer increase the prices of the listed staple goods beyond 3%.

The degree of tax cuts for retailers involved could range from 5% to 15% reductions on select corporate tax rates. The memo also described how it may promote the retailers selling staple goods at reduced prices that are produced in Etruria, to help domestic agriculture.

The goods targeted will include pasta, bread, meats, diary products, sanitary goods, including tampons, sanitary towels, baby diapers, soaps and finally baby formula. It is the aim of the scheme to reduce the average shopping bill for Etrurian families to further boost wider disposal income and reduce cost of living. It is also hoped that cheaper staple goods will also boost domestic consumption and aid GDP growth.

The memo revealed that ConaGrossi, Sole and VitaMercato have all agreed to begin discussions with the government over joining the scheme. These three retailers constitute 65% of Etruria’s supermarket sector and could theoretically provide cost-of-living relief to millions of Etrurian costumers.

The scheme will likely coincide with a proposed food stamp scheme announced last year that will provide federally subsidised goods for Etruria’s poorest families and families with a long-term carer.

The same memo argued, “the task of this federal government has always been to effect real and recognisable change to the lives of millions of Etrurians. It is our objective to deliver a tangible improvement to their standards of living, cost of living and boost their disposable incomes. By providing this scheme and others, this government will significantly improve the conditions for Etruria’s poorest and vulnerable. This government will continue to fight for the Etrurian people, defy the odds and overcome any obstacle that would deny this government the ability to put the Republic and the people first above all else.”

Etruria’s wealthiest man wants to help the "democratic resistance"
Giacomo Andrea Moscariello wants to unite Etruria's democrats into a cohesive force for renewal and rejuvenation to save the republic from the Tribunes
NOTIZIE by Giorgio Simone Parrinello
09 January 2023

Image
The upcoming by-election will either buy Chiara Mastromarino time or bring her down

Giacomo Andrea Moscariello was calm, warm and friendly, bathed in the dawn sunlight flowing through his office window in central Faulia. As the CEO and patriarch of the Mascariello Group and family, you would be easily forgiven for not knowing this man was Etruria’s wealthiest. Down to earth, self-deprecating and likeable, he also stands unique among Etruria’s executive class, he’s also unique in the mission he has assumed – restoring Etrurian democracy.

The 52-year-old succeeded his father, Andrea Romolo Moscariello four years ago, when the father passed away in sleep at the age of 84, leaving his son the family fortune and business. The Moscariello Group boasts interests in luxury cars, confectionary, textiles and agribusiness and is worth an estimated €46 billion, while Moscariello the younger is now estimated to be worth €40 billion personally, having merged his hedge fund Moscariello Services into the Group and one he built up from nothing personally. His personal success and that of his family is something Moscariello the younger does not advertise nor wear on his sleeve, he is reluctant to big up the achievements, merely describing success as a “result of luck and hard work in equal measure, more often the former than the latter.”

But I met with Moscariello not discuss hedge funds, profit margins and enterprise, but rather to discuss his recently pronounced “dedication to the restoration of democratic norms, constitutionalism and democratic pluralism in the country that gave me and my family everything.”

Last week at a conference held in northern Peravia, the billionaire CEO told participants, “There has to be a limit to how far we are willing to tolerate the boundaries being pushed back, the restraints torn from the wall, lies, falsehoods and fantasies replacing logic and reason. There must be a limit to how far we are willing to play by the rules when rulebook after rulebook is thrown onto the bonfire of norms.” It was Moscariello’s clarion call for Etruria’s opposition to the Tribune Movement to do things differently, and his willingness to help.

Sitting opposite him, I asked what had provoked his speech, his reply was surprisingly candid.

“Nothing, absolutely nothing. I woke up, that is it. I woke up one morning to realise what was going on. There are many, many people in our country who I believe have been sleeping just the same as me. We heard and saw the vitriol, the lies, the conspiracy theories and they were so numerous, so encompassing that we did not see what was happening through the storm of it all. Coming to see what has happened to our democracy, our institutions, you realise that we have lost so much but there is still time” he replied.

Seeing I was surprised, he quickly followed up saying, “look I may be not the typical activist for democracy, yes, I am a billionaire, but I still vote, I still engage with elections, I still read the newspapers and not just the business sections. I am a citizen of the Federation and I love my country, it gave me and my family everything, so I have stake, like the other 68 million of us. My wife, my children have stakes and I care about our democracy just as anyone else would.”

I asked him what he took from the Tribune Movement after six years, he told me, “I see a movement, not a political party, of people who are incredibly fearful of the modern world. They exist in this bubble of grievance, resentment and fear that have coalesced into an ideology. They hate democracy, norms and constitutional government because that would challenge their warped view of what Etruria is and by killing those things, they can ensure that their view of Etruria is enforced on others, can never be challenged and will inevitably enable them to trap Etruria in some space and time very alien to what Etruria is and where it is.”

“We cannot allow them to succeed because if they do, how do we get our country back? How do we get our democracy back? Democracy cannot exist solely for the Tribunes’ supporters and base; it has to exist for everybody” he quickly followed up.

I in turn asked how he would balance out the need to restore Etrurian democracy with the reality that a sizeable portion of the population support the Tribune Movement.

“Tell them the truth, because one of the mistakes I abhor since wakening up is that some believe those who vote Tribune are part of the problem, they’re not. These are people who have legitimate concerns in their lives, that have been exploited by the Tribunes. Listen to them, listen to their concerns and make the case that they can be solved without destroying our democracy, fundamentally, we need to make sure they know they are heard and listened to and that democracy can provide the answer” he said.

By this time, I came to realise that this 52-year-old billionaire was expressing a truth long forgotten by many of the opposition figures across Etruria’s political spectrum. After six years it is easy to forget that many Tribune voters back them because they felt the republic had failed them, discarded them and found their concerns and worries parochial or irrelevant. The struggle we all face, is that the Tribunes now seek to build a republic that presents itself as the answer to their worries, an overturning of the perceived system so that they, the “patriotic and faithful majority” are served and the elites, the liberal left are discarded.

I asked him, what of Etruria’s opposition, to which he was somewhat scathing, “they are absurdly complacent in my view. They are operating as if this is business as usual. They are going about as they’re facing off against a Sotirian Democratic government, that we will win the next election, form a coalition and get on with the job. No, this is not business as usual. The SD especially are like this, they talk the talk about reform and fixing our politics but really they are not treating the Tribunes as they should be treated, an existential threat to our democracy.”

“What we need is a complete overhaul of our thinking and our approach to the political reality. A united opposition, a clear case to the millions of Tribune voters that they are heard as I said, and that yes, we do need a transformational reform of democracy in this country, but not the authoritarian reform the Tribunes offer. A clear plan for the restoration, rejuvenation and reenergising of democracy in this country that will deliver progress and growth for as many Etrurians as possible” he said further.

Interestingly this call fell in line with the thinking and idealism of the newly founded and rapidly rising Etruria plus Euclea party. A reality that did not escape Moscariello, “yes I know of E+E, that is the kind of energy and plan I am talking about. The issue of the EC is not important to me, expending political capital on EC membership over fixing our democracy is a dangerous risk, but they have the ideas that I firmly believe in.”

I asked if he had donated money to E+E to which he denied, “my focus is not on one political party, but really the entire democratic resistance. We need more than just parties, we need civil society, authors, influencers, we need to mobilise every facet of society into saying enough is enough, we want our democracy back, we want a Etruria that is not governed by hate, lies, fantasies and ultranationalism.”

“That is why I am establishing a new organisation, New Democracy that I hope may go some way into achieving this – bringing together all of Etruria’s democrats to make the case for democracy, pluralism and liberty. It will not matter what you believe, whether you are a socialist, a liberal, a conservative, a sotirian democrat, if you believe in democracy and the constitution, then together we can do what must be done” he said with a burning passion.

What I wondered was not Moscariello’s sincerity, but whether he understood that by doing what he sought to do, he would be placing a target on his back.

“I understand the risks yes, I understand that tomorrow I could be accused of being an Euclo-leftist, a rich agitator, a traitor, an Etruria-hating elitist or an agent of some globe-spanning conspiracy to kill the white Euclean. But frankly, there is too much at stake. But that would inspire me to press on, because all they [Tribunes] have is insults, lies and conspiracy theories, there is no argument” he replied.

By the time of writing this, Deputy President Vittoria Vasari had already attacked him for the conference speech last week. Addressing Tribune supporters among Solaria’s dock workers, she decried him as a “billionaire socialist” and a “self-hating flagellant”, and a man who “had built his empire off the backs of Etrurians only to condemn Etrurians to the kind of arrogant politics that would deny them their true selves.”

And yet, I feel that Moscariello would be the sort of enemy the Tribunes would struggle to pin down, after all, Moscariello himself said the issue must never be the Tribune voter, but the Tribune entity that exploits their fears and worries for power. Pro-industry, pro-business and pro-growth at all costs, it is highly unlikely that the Tribunes would venture down the route of rich-bashing, but conversely, Moscariello could also serve as the strawman they would cherish, wealthy, globalist, detached from the realities of their voting base – working class, multi-generational, religious and socially conservative.

Moscariello’s biggest challenge is not weathering whatever the Tribunes throw at him, it may well be uniting the vast eco-system of anti-Tribune groups, civil society groups and political parties. E+E’s calls for a united opposition have been dismissed by both the SD and Citizens’ Alliance, while many groups differ greatly over what to do should the Tribunes be evicted from office and this disagreement kills off much cooperation. But perhaps it may well take a billionaire scion of one of Etruria’s wealthiest families to find the answer.

Government announces major party finance reform

Image
Under-Secretary for Public Affairs Camillo Schietroma announced the planned reform.

The Tribunes are planning a significant overhaul of party finance including the establishment of a Democracy and Engagement Fund, as well as caps on donations to individual senators and a total ban on overseas donations. Further plans include greater transparency over second jobs held by Senators and incomes from second jobs.

In a televised press conference, Federal Under-Secretary for Public Affairs Camillo Schietroma announced the proposed reform describing it as a “significant step toward transparency and enhancing trust of voters in our democracy for the benefit of the republic.”

The Party Finance and Democracy Law, which has been in the works since last summer aims to significantly “overhaul party financing, the donations system, increase public transparency on the incomes of senators, regulating second jobs and incomes and place all politically linked movements of money firmly in view of the voting public” Under-Secretary Schietroma explained.

The central piece of the reform will be the Democracy and Political Engagement Fund, which will be allocated from the federal budget and distributed in accordance with the number of seats held by federally represented parties. The DPEF will receive ₣100 million as of this year’s budget, with the figure divided across the senate. The government party will receive the largest share, followed by the party of opposition. The funds allocated will be expected to be used over the course of the senate term. The fund itself will be managed and overseen by the Senate Committee for Public Affairs. The Senate Committee will be permitted the authority and power to determine the percentage of distribution among parties.

Under-Secretary Schietroma said, “the fund operated and overseen by the senate will centralise the funds used by parties, all within the public’s view. The funds allocated will be expected to be used by all parties across the senate term, but primarily, it will guarantee to voters, confidence of where parties receive their money, removing any prospect for questionable behaviours or schemes.”

Coinciding with the establishment of a public fund for parties, the reform will significantly overhaul the donations system. All overseas donations will be banned under the law, including private individual and corporate donations, as well as those made by foreign NGOs or political committees. Domestic donations will also be overhauled with changes to the existing cap on amounts. All private individual donations will now be capped at ₣850 and corporate donations will be capped at ₣85,000, with both donation types requiring the ID number and Federal Corporation Register number respectively to displayed in party financial statements. The financial records of all political parties registered in Etruria will now be subject to review by the Senate Committee for Public Affairs, as well as the Federal Electoral Commission and the National Audit Office.

The Under-Secretary described these measures as a “sure way of protecting our political processes from the undue influence of vested interests, who may possess the financial means of accruing influence and power over political parties. By capping personal donations we will also guarantee protection from the influence of individuals with great financial power from doing the same, especially those with agendas and objectives in relation to the direction of our country.” He further explained, “by mandating the display of key identifiers such as ID and FCR numbers, voters and the Senate Committee for Public Affairs will be able to identify and track down donors with greater ease, a significant protection against fraud and rule breakers.”

The wider elements of the planned reform will also target Senators with second jobs with tighter restrictions on the jobs open for taking. This is in response to a number of Senators securing positions on executive boards across Etruria’s economy. According to a study by a number of NGOs, last year 38 senators from all parties held such positions earning over ₣280,000 per annum alongside their ₣98,300 senator salary. Other senators held jobs in companies linked to them personally, either through spouses or family members where their salaries exceeded their senator pay.

Under proposed reforms, the government will establish a list of jobs appropriate for a “sitting senator of the republic, that will be definable as contributing to the public good and development of the federation.” This includes advising NGOs, civil society groups, educational establishments and charitable organisations. The reform will also cap second incomes for sitting senators at ₣40,000 per annum, with any remainder paid by the employer to be donated to the Democracy and Political Engagement Fund.

Under-Secretary Schietroma told the press conference, “it is understandable and expected that voters would rankle at their elected officials using their status to secure six-figure salaries beyond the walls of the Senate. Fundamentally this issue is not about acquiring or maintaining a second paid job, but rather the questionable nature of that job in terms of its contributing to the national and public good.” He said further, “Etrurians want and expect their senators and state councillors to hold their office for public service and sense of duty to their fellow citizen, not as a means of earning money. The first and last priority of any office holder should be the Etrurian people and the fatherland, that is why we are making this effort to guarantee that in our lawmakers and senators.”

He concluded by saying, “our democracy and our republic depend upon trust and faith of the Etrurian people, for they are the masters and architects of our democracy. Their will and aspirations determine the nature of government and determines the direction of our great country. It is right that they have access to the truth of how money works and influences their national legislature and government. The Tribune Movement is dedicated to building a truly transparent, open and fair republic, one whose democracy is steadfast, responsive and representative of the national will. This reform proves that and I and all Tribunes look forward to seeing it pass the Chamber and State Council over the course of the next few weeks.”

CLAIRVAUX.Officials in the Bonne region of the Azure Coast have issued a notice to its citizens to be prepared for retaliation against civilian targets for the latest offensive maneuvers in the Brindamour special territory, Télévision d'État has learned. The announcement comes just six hours after Azure Coast military forces began the largest sustained bombardment of Vague Rouge military positions since offensive operations began early last year. Civilian constabularies in the region have been placed on elevated alert status as of Thursday afternoon.

General Andre Bartoux spoke at a press conference Thursday morning announcing that all government forces were advancing on key strategic locations in the federal military district, with operational oversight being given to the local regional commanders. It was unclear as of press time whether release authority to advance into Vague Rogue territory had been given, though General Bartoux expressed his optimism that a new round of negotiations could be forced upon the militant faction with enough successful gains. The Azure Coast military has been battling the Vague Rouge remnants in Brindamour off and on now for several decades.

"We feel confident in our capabilities to silence the guns this time around and bring about lasting peace to the region," Bartoux said at the news conference on Thursday. "We want to make this operational program an effective tool in our quest to bring about an end to hostilities and keeping loss of life to a minimum in the Brindamour region."

"No one here wants a protracted conflict in Brindamour to drag on another year," Bartoux said.

Almost immediately after offensive operations resumption was announced by Sartoux, organized protests and demonstrations broke out in major cities across the Sovereign Republic, clamoring for an end to the hostilities and a brokered settlement. Civilians, tired of the constant threat of terrorist attack reprisals against soft targets throughout the western half of the country and a general distaste for the long, drawn-out war effort, were seen protesting in front of the national congress hall on Thursday afternoon carrying banners proclaiming anti-war slogans. In Bonne, multiple cities saw massive protests shut down major thoroughfares.

Edmundo Reynault, a sociologist from the University of Sartoux, believes that anti-war protests will only gather strength in the days to come. "More and more Azurennes are coming to the conclusion that the situation in Brindamour is untenable. Without a major military operation and mobilization the likes of which this country has not seen since the Civil War, the territory will continue to be fought over tooth and nail without a resolution in sight. People recognize the futility of half-measures and are going to voice their displeasure towards the halls of power in Sartoux."

Aimee Roger, Reynault's colleague and a best-selling political science journalist, concurs with Edmundo, going so far as to claim that the only solution amenable to the people now may be the capitulation of Brindamour as a territory to the Vague Rouge. "As painful as a separation would be, it may be the only way out of this quagmire now. We have too much at stake for too little a gain; Brindamour as a strategic asset holds little value to Sartoux, and people rightfully question why we continue to spill Azurenne blood for a piece of real estate with a value that keeps bottoming out."

"We should be refocusing our efforts on domestic spending, not feeding the war machine," Roger said.

For their party, the Azurenne military continues to vehemently support the operation in Brindamour, believing the territory to be a vital national strategic interest. Bartoux commented as much during his press conference on Thursday. "With the tools at our disposal, we can make Brindamour part of the whole of our nation again, and we can make it prosperous."

Government shelves plans to move capital to Solaria indefinitely

The Tribune government has shelved plans to restore Solaria as the national capital, committing to maintaining federal institutions in Povelia. The decision came off the back of a two-year study on the costs and processes of moving the capital.

The decision was announced in the Federal Recorder, the government’s notice board. The decision, explained in an online document said, “the federal government has decided to shelve plans for the transferral of government institutions and the capital to Solaria. This decision is rooted in both the monetary costs and logistical hurdles.”

It is also understood from government sources that there was pressure from Tribune senators representing seats from certain states. One source said, “the Palestrinian, Andoran and Veratian delegations were pretty keen to see the capital remain in Povelia who for reasons of rivalry, economic interest or the opposing traditionalist view of Povelia did not want to see a move.” Even Solarian senators were opposed citing the need to carve out a federal territory akin to Il Dogado out of the state of Solaria, which would also require boundary changes to senate seats and cause a financial and administrative headache for the southern state.

Veratia’s prefect, Giuliano Aurelio Vinci a long critic of the “Solaria Idea” last year said, “there is a reason Povelia is our capital, it sits in the geographical heart of the country and it being an island for all intents and purposes, provides as universal position for all Etrurians. And ever since the Second Republic we have maintained the unwritten rule to leave Solaria as the City of the Church, for centuries Povelia has been the most influential city in Etruria, Solaria’s status is in the mythological.”

However it appears the government was permanently put off by the financial cost of moving all federal ministries, agencies and the three branches of government. According to its two-year study on the move, published today, the total cost of moving the entire federal government to Solaria would cost between €3.5 to €6 billion. Issues also included securing buildings to house ministries, with many of Solaria’s historical ministries (operated during the Solarian War-era) now hosting businesses or having been converted in apartments. The other issue would be the lengthy time taken to relocate civil servants or employing people from the city and wider state of Solaria.

As the report concluded, “the logistical efforts required to move a modern day central government are colossal. Such a decision of taken would disrupt government activities and functions.”

Other government officials speaking on the condition of anonymity also described the costs as a dissuading factor.

“It will cost less to restore the foundations of
Ministries and fight the black mould problem that is endemic across Povelia at the moment than it would to move everything and everyone. The six billion florin would be best spent on police, healthcare or helping out Etrurian families” one said.

Another said, “ultimately there was a feeling that moving to Solaria would just be a loud and bright gesture. Yes Solaria sits in a prominent place in the national story and psyche but ultimately Povelia is Povelia, I do not think there was a serious thought of abandoning La Exaltà.”

President Francesco Carcaterra, originally a major advocate for the Solaria move appeared to have a change of heart last year. In a speech given to celebrate the founding of the city, he told Povelians, “this is the most beautiful city in the world, the grandest of old ladies. It’s canals, palazzi and churches have borne witness to centuries upon centuries of Etrurian history, glory and wonder. This city is the face of our nation, grand, elegant, old and steeped from the clouds to the deepest seabed with the greatest history of them all.”

A government source further supported this saying, “after last year the President converted to the cult of Povelia as they say. There’s a genuine love of Povelia in him, even if he is a Tyrrenian at heart. It’s a love millions of Etririans feel.”

The decision to shelve the move followed a €1.2 billion plan to restore the foundations and stilts many Povelian buildings rest upon. The renovations will also include repairs to major canals, bridges and the opening of several “surge canals” to further boost defences against flooding in the Povelian Lagoon.

The completion of the Great Gate of Povelia, the city’s colossal tidal defence has played a prominent role in the reduction of flooding across the city. Flooding in the millennia old city of was a major cause for those promoting a move. The Porta Grande di Poveglia (PGP) is a €6 billion project that saw the construction of three mobile barriers at the three inlets separating the Povelian Lagoon from the Bay of Povelia, that rise up from the seabed to protect the lagoon from tides as much as 4ft high. During winter months, the depth of the Lagoon can dramatically rise with high tides off the Bay, leading to much of Povelia being flooded, causing damage each year and ultimately degrading the city altogether. The rising and fall tides have also weakened the foundations of buildings.

Construction of the PGP began in 2011 and was meant to be completed by 2015 but scandals and overruns were common place. The Tribune government overhauled the project and saw it completed on 2019. Povelia has been without major flooding since, leading many to deceive the PGP as Etruria’s greatest engineering marvel of the century to date.

BREAKING Etruria plus Euclea wins Carpodasco e Varsi by-election

Image
Roberto Gianluigi Corsi was elected Representative for Carpodasco e Varsi with 30% of the vote.

‘Etruria plus Euclea’ has won the by-election in the seat of Carpodasco e Varsi, taking the seat off the Social Democratic Party with a wafer-thin majority of 991. Roberto Gianluigi Corsi who won seat for his insurgent party said, “this victory belongs to all Etrurians, our bright future is coming into view slowly, one step at a time.” The result will likely worsen the situation facing the embattled SD leader Chiara Mastromarino.

The by-election in the Chiastrine seat of Carpodasco e Varsi was sparked after its SD incumbent, Luigi Carlo Tonini resigned following the leaking of bullying allegations and subsequent cover-up by the SD leadership. Despite this, the SD were looking at a reduced majority but the seat being returned. However, as the campaign progressed it became apparent that voters were turned off by the scandals surrounding SD leader Chiara Mastromarino and found the clear policy positions of Etruria plus Euclea as a better option. The SD failed to dispatch any household names to campaign for its candidate, with Mastromarino herself avoiding the limelight since before nativity.
E+E for its part dispatched all six of its sitting senators and found an enthusiastic welcome according to its activists. Many voters in the middle-class seat on the Adixe found E+E’s clear position the EC and aspiring to relaunch membership ambitions a breath of fresh air, others found the party to be more responsive and providing a clear “alternative to the Tribunes beyond just platitudes.” Ultimately, E+E’s Corsi was more vocal and present throughout the campaign and won out.

Corsi becomes E+E’s seventh member of the Chamber of Deputies and the first to be directly elected, as the other six defected from the Citizens’ Alliance and SD in the Autumn of last year.

Corsi told assembled supporters at the official counting centre, “tonight, the people of Carpodasco e Varsi made a loud declaration that seek a positive Etruria, an open and democratic Etruria, a bright future. They want to be heard and they want to see our country be free and join our Euclean cousins in embracing the future and the Euclean Community.

“This victory belongs to all Etrurians, our bright future is coming into view slowly, one step at a time” he said.

Turnout in the by-election was down a full-eleven points from 2021, with only 61.3% of voters taking to the polls. This fall in turnout may well be more key to the SD’s defeat than an E+E surge. The SD saw its vote collapse from 39,000 in 2021 to just 11,567. The Tribune Movement, which is weaker in Chiastre compared to other northern states saw a dramatic increase in its vote share, rising from 5,311 in 2021 to 10,606 last night.

The SD released a statement saying, “it is clear from the result in Chiastre that the party must strive to do more to earn and maintain the trust of Etrurians. The task at hand, saving our country and democracy from the Tribune Movement and far-right ultranationalism it represents requires the SD to be viewed as a party of integrity, honesty and dedication. On this we recognise our shortfalls.

“The SD, under Chiara Mastromarino’s leadership will work tirelessly from this moment on to prove that the party is a government-in-waiting, a government that will listen and deliver, while maintaining its integrity and sincerity.”

E+E for its part said jubilantly, “Etruria plus Euclea is a movement of proud Etrurians, who yearn for democratic and national renewal. We promise to fight for a society that is just, compassionate, fair and united. This country and its people deserve a bright future, a modern and positive future and we will work, one step at a time to secure for our great country that modern and Euclean future. Carpodasco e Varsi is but the first step toward this and we thank voters of Chiastre for giving us this chance to prove ourselves worthy of their trust.”

The Tribune Movement which officially accepted the unlikelihood of winning the vote celebrated its increased vote share saying in a post online, “the result in Chiastre reveals that even bastions of the liberal-left, Etrurians are looking at this government and know that it delivers, keeps its promises and puts the republic and the people first before all else. The Movement will strive to build upon this momentum and in time deliver good and patriotic state-government for all Chiastrines.”

Opinion | How Behera’s desperate need for stability has brought turmoil to its doorstep
Galib al-Zahiri| 30 December 2022

The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

It’s an Estmerish saying that resonates well with one particular nation in central-northern Coius whose need to preserve the stability and the existing status quo has done more to upset its own delicate balancing act both domestically and internationally, and will no doubt have consequences that resonate into 2023 and beyond.

The new year was barely eight days old when the announcement came that Beheran soldiers and armoured vehicles had crossed the Yemeti frontier, beginning a swift advance across vast swathes of northwestern Yemet, capturing numerous towns and villages. Of course, this military operation and the initial successes it presented to the Beheran and international publics were not a surprise; Beheran military aircraft had been engaging in a bombing campaign over northwestern Yemet at least two months before the ground invasion began. Even before that, Behera had already engaged with ethnic Gero militia units belonging to the Emergency Council for the Restoration of National Unity and had proceeded to hastily amend the constitution to expand the number of personnel actively serving the armed forces. All of this pointed towards Behera’s willingness to use force to resolve issues beyond diplomatic means.

What the invasion and subsequent four month occupation of northwestern Yemet did was expose Behera’s almost pathological need for regional stability. This is not somewhat misplaced; Behera sits at the centre of northern Coius. It is not only surrounded by multiple different nations, but also is at the crossroads of Rahelia and Bahia. This translates to ethnic diversity and the tensions that subsequently come with forcing disparate people groups to coexist. This need for security and stability elsewhere is reflected in Behera’s own domestic affairs; keeping various ethnic groups pacified and placated requires both tact and force in order to make it work. Where Behera went wrong in January is that it showed that the stick is its preferred method of choice in order to ensure this balance is maintained.

Behera’s eastern provinces are largely dominated by ethnic groups similar to the Gero found in northwestern Yemet; the largest of these groups is the Beja at 7.8 million inhabitants; who form a majority of the population in the provinces of Bas Gondare and Gondare. Although other experts have already pointed this out, it is worth repeating; much of the tensions and disputes that underpinned the Beheran Civil War were centred around the Beja being unwilling to submit to the often brutal rule of the Rahelian urban elite, who occupy the majority of the population in the centre and west of the country, including most of Behera’s major urban areas. The Gero across the border, as well as the Yemeti government, provided material assistance to the Beja militias fighting the Beheran government, as well as often engaging Beheran soldiers directly in artillery duels and air strikes. The cultural, ethnic, and linguistic ties between the two peoples are undeniable. And that scares Amassine. Those ties underpinned the rationale behind the intervention; a Gero militia equipped with former equipment and soldiers from the People’s National Liberation Army of Yemet presented a direct threat to the Beheran state of affairs even if that threat was, from a military standpoint, not particularly credible. After all, the PNLAY was in a sorry state prior to the outbreak of the civil war, the outbreak of hostilities would have not done any of the units that became part of the ECRNU any good in terms of preparedness.

Despite this lack of preparedness compared with Behera’s clear military superiority, the brief intervention and occupation did not yield any clear military successes and with further changes in Yemeti political control, particularly the reintegration of the ECRNU into the forces that currently hold the Yemeti capital, it remains to be seen as to whether or not the intervention has definitively blunted Girota’s capacity to launch reprisal attacks against targets in Behera proper. In any instance, the presence of hostile forces on Behera’s most sensitive borders will still be a cause of alarm for Amassine going into 2023, and the continued rebuilding and reforming of the armed forces will be a priority for the Sharifi regime, as is enhancing security in Bas-Gondare and Gondare.

In doing so, it could reawaken tensions between the government and the Beja people, who ultimately laid down their arms in 2001 in return for assurances that they would not be subjected to dominance by a Rahelian-dominated government. Domineering government policies and forced Rahelianisation were long standing causes of resentment for the Beja going back as far as the colonial period, in which Behera was created as a protectorate under the Gaullican colonial empire, splitting the Beja and Gero between Behera and Haute-Gond. This arrangement was maintained under Werania, which controlled Behera as a protectorate and Yemet as a full colony. Under both of these colonial administrations, considerable autonomy over domestic affairs was given to the powers in Amassine, who had long pursued policies of assimilation and Rahelianisation in order to bring stability and control to the frontier regions of the Beheran sultanate. These policies were actively encouraged and supported by both Gaullica and Werania as a mutual benefit; they would only have to provide a minimum investment in terms of military forces, and the Rahelian rulers could rely on military support from their colonial supporters in the event of substantial resistance to their own policies.

The way in which these policies were implemented varied, but the end result was the same. Languages and tribal customs were suppressed in favour of promoting the Rahelian language and customs. Rahelians also dominated the political and economic spheres of Behera, from important government positions to control of important state industries. Regions dominated by non-Rahelians were controlled by Rahelian officials, who were often given significant leeway in enforcing Rahelianisation and the systemic deconstruction of non-Rahelian ethnic identities. Rahelianisation was reinforced through state power; resistance was often dealt with through brutality against the ethnic minorities who resisted. This left much of Behera’s eastern and southern regions, and its agricultural heartland, under effective military occupation and contributed to the beginning of the civil war in 1992. Continued military presences in these areas will be seen as a violation of the conditions of the peace treaty signed in 2001 and an escalation of existing insurgencies.

Internal security is not the only challenge to Behera’s inherent stability that it faces in 2023, but economic security as well. With neighbouring Tsabara in the midst of a brutal civil war, Behera has faced significant economic problems, not only through losing a key export market, but loss of access to Tsabara’s ports which provided immensely important access to key markets in Euclea. Tsabaran ports kept the Beheran economy functioning until rebel groups, backed by neighbouring Zorasan, began to fight government security forces in early 2020. This created considerable disruption to Beheran companies, who scrambled to find alternative routes to export goods to foreign markets. Although Sohar became the primary export route for many goods, the lack of infrastructure made it difficult for exporters to meet demand, and as such, Behera experienced a significant contraction in export revenues, while goods that could not be exported were sold on the domestic market. Although this had an added benefit of making certain goods cheaper, the lack of revenue reduced an already fairly minimal tax take for the Beheran government, which has been forced to borrow more money from overseas creditors to make up for the shortfall in revenue. Market corrections and overall increases in particular goods, especially fuel and gas, has contributed to inflation in Behera that hasn’t been seen in at least two decades, squeezing an already small middle class and putting the significant working and peasant classes under additional pressures. By late 2021, these had already become significant enough to prompt Sharifi into signing a new economic cooperation deal with Zorasan, opening up Behera to a vast array of Zorasani goods in an attempt to alleviate inflation and reduce prices for basic goods. Understandably, domestic producers found themselves competing with economies of scale far larger and more advanced than those in Behera, although it remains to be seen how badly affected domestic producers will be with the new competition.

The agreement not only promised more infrastructure investment in the same vein as a deal signed between Zorasan and Mabifia only a few weeks prior, but also firmly placed Behera within the Zorasani sphere of influence, a complete turn from the independently-minded foreign policy that had been promoted by Amassine since 2001. A willingness to work with international groups and countries to resolve issues has been put aside out of economic necessity; Sharifi and his policymakers in Amassine are well aware of the impacts these decisions would have on the outcome of the war in Tsabara and the post-conflict diplomatic situation. Complicating matters are the hundreds of thousands of refugees in camps across northern Behera and the unwillingness of the international community to do something about them. These camps are fertile recruiting grounds for rebels operating in Tsabara, as well as groups with grievances against Amassine. Naturally, Behera wants something done about them, but their actions in Yemet and entrance into the Zorasani sphere of influence has left it increasingly economically and diplomatically isolated. Undoubtedly, this will seriously impede Behera’s chances of improving not only its domestic security situation, but also economic security.

Sharifi will face a year of tough choices ahead in 2023. His quest for stability has ultimately made Behera a more unstable place than when it was at the beginning of the decade, and now he has to face the consequences of a series of badly calculated missteps that have ultimately resulted in more problems than they solved.

Lavana and Valduvia reach military deal
Vinliam Demaniani| 14 January 2023

Lavanan Foreign Affairs Minister Kaipo Nhidomou, and his Valduvian counterpart Juta Vaino, announced that Lavana and Valduvia had reached a new agreement following the arrival of a Valduvian delegation to Pers this week. The deal will see the acquisition of up to 1 billion Euclos worth of military equipment, the arrival of Valduvian advisors and technicians on a 1 year mission to train their Lavanan counterparts in the operation of such equipment. Most crucially this equipment is to be delivered to Lavana in “Critical speed”.

The deal comes on top of several other military deals reached between Lavana and Valduvia following the leadup to the 2nd Yoloten War. Valduvia is said to have reached several “arms transfer” deals with Dezevau, to allow the Lavanan army to replace equipment in the 2 week long conflict. Where Dezevau would transfer equipment (on top of what they were sending to Lavana by their own volition), to the Lavanan military. Chistovodia is said to have entered a similar deal with Dezevau, to allow the Lavanan military some ability to replace losses. Valduvia additionally agreed to not consider repayment for humanitarian aid provided to the Lavanan state during the conflict.

Valduvia has proven as a steady ally of the new administration in Pers, after Keomany’s fiery “exit” from the Premier chair, during some of the largest protests in Lavanan history, that saw dozens of Hacyinian, and Zorasani citizens lynched to death, and injured. Lavana has remained silent, attempting to calm the situation at home and abroad. Hacyinia has decried involvement of foreign powers in the conflict, stating the shooting down of Chistovodian aircraft, and the capture of Chistovodian personnel. Along with claims of Dezevauni troops involved. However few have been able to confirm such claims. The arrival of the Community of Nations personnel to the Yoloten has been said to have calmed the situation. However Lavana legally barred the entry of most Hacyinians for almost any reason into its territory, Zorasanis have also been affected. With the Hacyinian and Zorasani administration regularly calling for the destruction of Lavana. Tensions remain high to say the least.

The Lavanan army having suffered extensive losses in their campaign have struggled to recoup losses, with news of retired tanks dated to the Lavanan Revolution being brought into service at an accelerated rate. Lavana reached a deal with Vinalia earlier this month as well, to transfer 100 retired 60’s and 70’s tanks belonging to the former People’s Republic of Vinalia, to Lavana for 3 million Euclos. Which experts believe will be brought to service, or salvaged for parts. The cleanup attempts by Hacyinian and Zorasani specialists of mine fields, and bobby traps over previously occupied Hacyinia, was said to enter its 3rd month, and expected to continue for another year. Last Friday a 55 year old man was said to have been killed by an unmarked Lavanan minefield, outside Karaganda.

Tensions remain high, 2 months after the end of one of the deadliest conflicts of the 21st century. Yet it appears Lavana is preparing for future conflict with its arch nemesis, and its new backer.

Central Committee authorises establishment of new State Commission to tackle youth unemployment
Body will be tasked with reducing unemployment among 18-28 year olds
POLITICS by Abdullah al-Mosawi
17 January 2023 |20 Aban 2344

The Central Committee has authorised the establishment of a new State Commission on Youth Employment and Labour Affairs, with the task of implementing research and policies to tackle the Union’s youth unemployment problem.

In an official statement released to the Supreme Assembly of the Union, the Central Committee said, “youth unemployment and under-unemployment has been a long term issue undercutting the Union’s economic and social development. The Committee’s commitment to boosting growth, standards of living and acting upon its obligations in relation to Ettehad and our united society will be exercised with the establishment of a new state commission.”

It further explained, “the State Commission will be tasked with researching and developing legislation, state schemes and procedures that will seek to increase youth employment, work to guarantee long-term employment and labour force retention for the 18-28 year demographic.”

The State Commission is to be headed by Nazir Ashour, former Governor-General of Khazestan and deputy chairman of the Front Office for Economic Research. The State Commission will also be tasked with inviting academics, economists and representatives from the Young Companions of the Union to provide insight into the targeted demographic. It is hoped that by expanding key Commission members, a wider policy agenda will be built to hit the issue head on.

State Commissions are special government bodies that are established to tackle particular issues plaguing society, the economy or security. They possess special powers and authority, that enables them to propose legislation and enact policies via the appropriate Union Ministry. State Commissions are to rely upon expert advisors, ordinary citizens related to the task and government officials.

Successive Central Authority Generations have sought to tackle an issue that has plagued the Union since its founding forty-three years ago. Since 1980, youth unemployment across the country has averaged 26% for those aged 18-28, notably in urban areas. The figure is lower in rural areas where males of the age group find labour focused work or day to day employment on farms or rural industries, however, the figure among females of the age group in rural areas is markedly higher at 36%.

The Central Committee’s statement further said, “the dignity of work provides not only personal benefits, of confidence, dignity and self respect, but also the financial security of a stable and reliable source of income. This is the right of all citizens of the Union, it is not right nor acceptable that sizeable elements of society and the population should not see this rights realised by virtue of age or geographical location.”

The military has also long warned that long term unemployment among the young poses a state security threat. Last year the Supreme Council of the Revolutionary Armed Forces produced a memo saying, “long-term joblessness among the young generations poses a direct threat to Ettehad, social cohesion and collectivism. It promotes atomisation, individualism and elevation of the self over the greater good of the Union. Such developments would build among the young a resentment of the state and the revolutionary ideals of the homeland. To solve this issue is mutually beneficial to our young and to the homeland.”

Both the state and military operate short to medium term job schemes, notably the Union Construction and Labour Service, while the military’s National Labour Corps have both proven successful at employing hundreds of thousands of 18-28 year old men in thousands of construction projects. National service has also proven a successful route for many unemployed young men to secure lasting careers or at least a three-year escape from unemployment if they do not take up professional service.

Senior members of the National Renovation Front have also warned that long term youth unemployment would undermine Ettehad, the spiritual and metaphysical unity shared among all Zorasanis. By steadily building an “underclass of disenchanted.” State President Rahim Ali Haftar for his part has spoken of the issue previously. In 2019, he told the Supreme Assembly as then head of the General Intelligence Service, “we owe it not just to the Union’s economic future but to all our young citizens that the right to dignity of work is realised. Resentment, frustration and self-loathing as misplaced as the latter is, is a brew that breeds activities and behaviour outside the interest of the Union.”

Furthermore, State President Ali Haftar made tackling youth unemployment one of the priorities of his leadership when running to become General-Secretary of the Front in 2021. He told the Revolutionary Command Congress in November that year, “we must fight for our younger generations, we must commit ourselves to the struggle against joblessness, we must commit ourselves to the fight against state failure and shortcomings. We know how many jobs we must create per year, now is the time that we achieve it. For if we do not, we will surely come to face the consequences of our shortcomings and failures.”

The State Commission is expected to begin work by the end of the month.

Tiwura's Western Crackdown

Image
Soldiers in Akuware
Omamiri, Tiwura - On Nativity Eve, President Akinlabi signed the 2022 Anti-Insurgency Act into law, and with this saw cross-party support in both congress and senate and celebration by those in Omamiri and Isowo City. The bill, first proposed in late October, comes after increasing military and civilian casualties in the current conflicts in the western regions of Tiwura, notably the Magadi. This violence prompted strong support for more active measures against the insurgencies beyond sending more troops, which has been the go-to response by the Akinlabi government since the conflict began to heat up once again. Since August, over 10,000 TAF soldiers have been deployed into the western provinces, and 182 have been killed in the past two months.

The bill itself was designed to allow the Tiwuran government to take proactive measures against insurgents rather than reactive ones, like sending soldiers after an attack. This includes expanding the power of Tiwuran federal agencies by creating a six month long period where all public meeting places, community leaders, religious leaders, and government offices within the western portions of Tiwura will be investigated immediately, not complying will result in property seizure and a warrant for arrest. The bill also grants the Tiwuran government the ability to seize control of local police forces within the states of the Northwest, Horoland, Patango, Kasuweshi, and the Magadi, which local government leaders have actively protested against calling it a violation of Tiwuran federalism. The bill's most controversial section gives Tiwuran officials the power to shut down religious institutions they deem "incite violence and harm the welfare of the Tiwuran public".

Unlike the cheers from the Presidential palace that followed Akinlabi's signature, the Tiwurans in the western states would prepare for another average crackdown, but the reality of what has began has been much, much worse than anticipated. Within 24 hours police eight police departments were seized by the federal government, including Nyamirra PD in the Magadi and Okuselo PD in Kasuweshi. On Nativity Day, agents would arrive in cities across the west escorted by Tiwuran soldiers and began detaining locals for questioning, ranging from clergymen to schoolteachers. Reports would come to Bahia Online from a source that claimed that one of Tiwura's largest mazars, the Satareh Sharqa, was raided and left in ruins by government forces on New Year's Eve. Similar reports have been heard in nearly every western state. On January 8th, military spokesperson Amy Taiwo-Giles would respond to these reports by calling the raids "routine searches" and went to call them "a staple of TAF anti-insurgency policy, the claims made are outlandish and will only harm locals if this campaign continues".

We reached out to a local from Akuware, the largest western city and capital of the Kasuweshi province. This local tells us about the last few weeks under this new bill. "The soldiers showed up on the 27th at my local mazar, I was praying. They would kick me out and began searching through every part of it. The next day, I tried to return, but I was barred and told that this mazar was subject to federal investigation. I had to walk miles to the closest one, which was open for a while. The week after that mazar was shut down too, and I had no idea where to worship." When we asked about if anybody was arrested, the local told us that they heard neighbors were being arrested and detained for hours on end.

The political fallout from this has seen support from many of the bills supporters in the Republic Assembly. Outspoken Sotirian Tiwura Party congresswoman Harmony Asare called the bill "a breath of fresh air from the Akinlabi presidency". However, on New Year's Day, 11 of the IIC assemblymen refused to show up in protest of the bill's signature. IIC Senator from Patango Kosau Gambo tells Bahia Online that several of his friends in office in his home province were arrested or their houses inspected by federal agents and soldiers. Gambo calls the bill "a clear violation of human rights and the dignity of millions of Tiwurans, and it clearly targets the Irfani population in an overwhelming manner."

For the past few weeks, reports of such actions have become more and more numerous. Several Tiwuran activists, such as Estmere-based author Shanono Abdullahi, want to spread this news beyond the confines of Tiwuran media and to the eastern world. Abdullahi told us that "It is my duty as a member of a Zamga and as a Tiwuran to continue to call for action by the eastern governments, and I want all others in similar places to do the same, as what is happening in my homeland is downright abhorrent."

Resurgence of Separatism in Paretia
Despite the failure of the Tosuton referendum in October separatist movements in Paretia have grown even outside of Tosutonia
Carlos Araujo (@Carlos11) | 20 January 2022 | Precea

Precea, Paretia: In the summer Paretia and Tosutonia have seen turmoil over political fighting between the regional and federal governments, and the arrest of the Tosuton separatist leader Artur Pagès Satorra which saw riots and an eventual attempted independence referendum. The referendum was held in October, but it failed to pass.

Parties such as the League of Socialists for Tosuton Independence, Freedom for Tosutonia, and Tosuton Front saw growth in popularity over the last year under the government of Isilda Cerqueira. But even though the referendum failed, the popularity of independence is still growing in the region. As well as outside of Tosutonia, in Esmeira and Visega too.

A long history of separatism exists in Paretia, especially in Tosutonia but as well as Esmeira and Visega. After Marta I of Luzela conquered the peninsula in the Paretian War in the 16th century there had been numerous rebellions, including the largest, the Vallverdú-Escolano Rebellion, a combined force of Tosutons and Esmeirans that was crushed by the government. During the Etrurian Revolutionary Wars and invasion of western Paretia, Tosutons and Esmeirans sought independence by joining the Etrurians, however only the Paretian Blessed Republic was formed.

Separatism grew immensely after The Great War, it became left-wing in nature. The flags of the independence movements, such as the Bandera Estrella, the Republican separatist symbol of Tosutonia, were made. After the Solarian War and return of the monarchy separatist terrorism became an issue, groups such as the People's Army of Tosutonia and the Esmeiran Front for Homeland and Liberty would commit car bombings, take hostages, and attack infrastructure against the government. Heavily inspired by the left-wing nationalist groups in Etruria during the Western Emergency.

These groups were crushed by the right-wing governments of Leonel Freitas and Danilo Abril, who used military force to subdue to the separatist terror groups, and by the 1970s separatism was much less popular in Paretia. The return of separatism came in the form of multiple political parties in the 80s and 90s, but they were not very popular.

Only recently have these parties begun to gain traction. The right-wing government of Isilda Cerqueira's conflict with the Tosuton regional government and arrest of Tosutons has caused a call for action amongst separatists outside of Tosutonia. In Esmeira, Angélica Nogales and her party, the Republican Left for Esmeiran Independence, or the IRIE, have began to be more active and been growing in polls. Similarly in Visega the Nationalist Left of Visega under Virxilio Sotolongo has began to grow in polling as well.

These parties in Tosutonia, Esmeira, and Visega all have a similar goal in common, independence from Paretia, usually in the form of a Republic, however, joining the EC after independence has been a area of debate within the parties themselves, some members are very left-wing and against joining the Community.

In January Pagès Satorra and the leaders of the other two left-wing independence parties met in Encerosa to discuss working together more for the independence of all three nations. A loose alliance between the separatist parties of the three regions formed out of this. However, concern of the rise of separatism terrorism has begun to be realized. The federal government has already made arrest of Tosuton separatists who were accused of planning a bombing of a police station in Encerosa. Federal Police say the terror group the New People's Army of Tosutonia has begun to resurge in size over the past few months, similarly in Visega and Esmeira as well.

Premier Isilda Cerqueira was asked about the rise of separatism in Paretia "This is the end goal of the liberal-left in Paretia, causing agitation and trying to split our four nations apart. Our national motto says: United we are Greater, Now and Forever. It is that for a reason. The left wants us to be disunited, and weaker, not greater."

Hacyinia, Zorasan strengthen security and defense with new base deal
Zorasan to lease base in Northern Hacyinia, keep 8,000 soldiers stationed in Hacyinia for training, “collective security”
1-20-2023 10:04

Hacyinian Defense Minister Taetaerqan Aelborty, met with Zorsani Deputy First Minister Sadavir Hatami in Dabulug today to sign off on a five year base leasing agreement that will see the Bayzak Military Base in Northern Hacyinia transfer from the Royal Hacyinian Army to the Zorasani Irfanic Revolutionary Army effective February 28th, 2023. Included in the agreement is provisions for the stationing of 8,000 troops from the Zorasani Armed Forces to both train the Hacyinian military as well as to “further guarantee the security of Hacyinia.”

The agreement represents a significant strengthening of the Hacyinia-Zorasan military and security agreements. The relationship between the two countries' military has steadily increased over the past several decades as evidenced by the yearly Iron Resolve exercises. The relationship was on full display during the Hacyinia-Lavana War two months ago where Zorasani Military forces played an integral role in the conflict.

The 8,000 soldiers from the Zorsani Irfanic Revolutionary Army are to function as “one part trainers, ensuring that the Hacyinian military is trained and capable of defending it’s homeland” as well as to function as a rapid reaction force in the event of “socialist aggression in the region.” Per Hacyinian Defense Minister Aelborty “It’s obvious to us that Lavana, supported by the Brown Sea Community and the AIS at large, continues to function as a regional aggressor. Through this agreement, we hope to continue to deepen the strong partnership between Hacyinia and Zorasan as well as to deter future acts of aggression from Lavana.”

Both Aelborty and Zorsani Deputy First Minister Sadavir Hatami both stated that there are high level talks between Hacyinia and Zorasan for greater military cooperation between the two countries. Neither the Defense or First Minister shared further details on what the nature of these talks or what potential agreement awaits.

This base leasing agreement shortly follows an announced agreement between Lavana and Valduvia for a large, 1 billion Euclo arms agreement as well as a smaller arms agreement between Lavana and Vinalia. Several analysts agree that this base leasing agreement, although unlikely to be a direct cause of these arms deals, showcase a new phase of the Hacyinia-Lavana conflicts where both countries are increasingly involving others in their longstanding territorial disputes.

EC SEES NEW COMMISSIONERS.

Image
Euclean President Vallette has overseen a new commission appointed at the Euclean level.

Kesselbourg City, Kesselbourg - After two months of tense negotiations within the Euclean halls of power, and as governments internally decide who is to take the mantle of the new commission, the Euclean Community's press offices announced early in the morning that the final nations had ratified their representation in the halls of executive Euclean Government.

The Euclean Commissioners are appointed by their respective governments, likely mirroring that of their national government coalition or governing parties, and approved by-and-large by the Euclean council. Including the President and High Commissioner, there are 26 Commission positions - granting each of the 13 member-states two representatives at the body.

Euclean President Vallette has put forward radical policy changes at the Euclean level, aiming to institute wide-ranging changes in terms of foreign policy. He has voiced support for domestic Euclean economic initiatives like the Single Euclean Tax and continued support of the 'Buy Euclean' scheme. To maintain such policies and projects, an amiable commission will be needed on his side - and it is not entirely apparent whether one will exist in the collaborative nature of the organisation.

So, who exactly is in the commission?

The Commission
Image
High Commissioner: Eva Krol (ACDE) - Hennehouwe
The new High Commissioner of the Euclean Community is Hennish politician Eva Krol, a member of the Alliance of Conservatives and Democrats for Euclea. From 2021 until her appointment to the Commission, she served as Euclean Affairs Minister in Rupert van Bleiswijk's government. Prior to this she had served as a Defence Minister from 2014-2017.

Eva Krol has stated her mission as High Commissioner revolves around "sensible" actions. She has argued that she sees herself as a "voice of moderation" in a largely ASE Euclean Community. Many have interpreted this as a means to moderate policy initiatives like 'Buy Euclean' and the Single Euclean Tax, likely aiming to ensure the latter is friendly towards business interests.

Given her stance on the ACDE presidential primary, she is seen as a 'soft-conservative' within the ACDE.

Image
Foreign and Global Affairs: Margrete Veen (Avant) - Scovern
Appointed as new Foreign and Global Affairs Commissioner, succeeding now President Vallette, is Margrete Veen from Avant. Margrete Veen served as Minister for Displaced Persons from 2021 to her appointment in he Commission under the Radicals government in Scovern. As Foreign and Global Affairs Commissioner, Veen will be at the forefront of ongoing diplomatic emergencies such as the Tsabaran Crisis and the Second Yemeti Civil War.

Additionally she will be faced with the looming question of the next decade, as calls for federalisation increase among some circles of the Community, and the pressure mounts for a unified Common Defence and Security Policy.

Image
Legal Affairs and the Rule of Law: Fokko Glas (Avant) - Alsland
Fokko Glas served as a Member of the Euclean Parliament from 2014 until his appointment to the highly sought after position of Legal Affairs and the Rule of Law Commissioner. Prior to this, he served within the Alslandic Cabinet as Minister of Justice under Liekele Ykema from the years of 2012-2014.

A relatively obscure political actor has been thrust into one of the highest positions of authority in the Euclean Community. Despite being from 'Avant' he is ready to be a key ally of Euclean President Vallette, who launched his platform for presidency on the backs of the criticism levied at Paretia for its reneging on Euclean treatries. Glas is supportive of these measures, lauding the country as "teetering on the edge of illegality".

Image
Budget and Fiscal Affairs: Rupert van Bleiswijk (ASE) - Hennehouwe
Rupert van Bleiswijk served as Premier of Hennehouwe from 2017-2022. During the Euclean Presidential election, he ran within the ASE primary before being eliminated and endorsing Vivien Vallette for the position. Prior to this, van Bleiswijk had served both chambers of the Flemish Assembly before becoming Minister for Economic Affairs in 2011 until 2014.

With an ASE member in charge of the Budget and Fiscal Affairs Commission hopefuls aim on the 'relatively quick' passing of a Single Euclean Tax, as well as a force to negotiate with the Euclean Central Back. Van Bleiswijk has expressed great "admiration" for the Euclean project and has said it is "one of the honours of his life" to serve within the Commission.

Image
Agriculture and Rural Communities: Yorsk Erickson (Avant) - Borland
Yorsk Erickson got a PHD in economics from the University of Newstead. He is a businessman who joined politics in the 90s and has gone through several positions, including being an MP for his home constituency, working in the Borish Ministry of Agriculture, and being part of a special commission of that ministry. He prides himself in having a background in agriculture because he inherited a company that owns several food processing plants and rural communities because he was born in his parents' countryside secondary home.

He was a member of the Conservative Party of Borland from 1991 until 1997, and is a member of the Democratic Party of Borland since. During his time in the Ministry for Agriculture, he worked closely together with the Ministries for the Economy and the Interior to secure the future of Borland’s rural communities, many of whom struggle with population loss and the availability of public services. He supports creating incentives for essential service workers to move to rural areas, including offering higher wages to these workers and offering stipends for students who agree to later work in rural areas for a set amount of time.

Image
Trade, Competition, Innovation and Digitisation: Maeve Ní Snodaigh (ASE) - Caldia
Maeve Ní Snodaigh is the new Commissioner for Trade, Competition, Innovation and Digitisation - one of the largest portfolios of any Commissioner. One of the most unique roles in the Commission, it is one of the few areas of implemented common policy at the EC level, though beholden to the interests of national governments.

Ní Snodaigh previously served as a TC in the Caldish National Assembly from 1993 - 2007. During Stiofán Mac Suibhne Premiership, she served as the second Minister for International Investment and Cooperation from June 2021 until her appointment to the Commission. Prior to this she had various levels of diplomatic experience, having served as an ambassador to severely Euclean countries.

Image
Internal Revenue: Adie Nicholson (ASE) - Estmere
Nicholson is a new addition to the Commission, with his previous highest-profile role being First Minister of the Estmerish state of Swerdia. He headed the brief PSD minority government of 2016-17, after which he resigned to make way for current First Minister Herm Vaġner.

He spent a brief period in the role of Shadow Secretary of State for Intergovernmental Affairs and Communities, but eventually stepped down, becoming an MEP for Swerdia in the 2019 Euclean Parliament elections.

Image
Transportation and Infastructure: Benny Boesen (ACDE) - Scovern
Benny Boesen has been appointed to the Transportation and Infrastructure Commission, having served as the Liberal People's Party Minister for Transport during the years of 2009-13 under Lars Rogness. In this position he oversaw the development of domestic high-speed rail and the beginning of plans implemented to bring Scovern in line with the wider Euclean Community goal of inter-connectivity through the Euclostar Rail Service.

Prior to his appointment to the Commission he had served as a Member of the Rigsdagen from 2001 - 2013 and then as a Member of the Euclean Parliament from 2014 - 2022.

Image
Energy, Natural Gas and Oil: Fíona Ní Luain (ASE) - Caldia
Fíona Ní Luain served as Minister of Energy and Minister of Petroleum under the Premiership of Stiofán Mac Suibhne from early 2019 to late 2021, when she was replaced by Gráinne Ní Cheanndubháin. Prior to this she had served as a TC from 2011 onwards for the Social Democratic Party.

Before being appointed as Commissioner for Energy, Natural Gas and Oil she had been serving as an executive at a Caldish State Oil Company.

Image
Internal Market and Industrial Matters: Valentina Birău (ASE) - Amathia
Valentina Birău studied at the Quesnay School, achieving a Masters Degree in Economics. She served as an economic advisor during the Premiership of Marin Arelescu from 2016-2017 and then became Minister of the Economy and Finances from 2017-2018. From 2019 until being appointed to the Commission, she served as an MEP for the ASE.

Birău's placement as Internal Market and Industrial Matters Commissioner is likely a key lynchpin in ASE strategy to help foster and promote the 'Buy Euclean' Initiative. She has chirp'd support for the initiative prior to this and was integral in helping lobby actors at home in Amathia to instigate policies favourable to the Initiative.

Image
Health and Food Safety: Erika Vikström (Avant) - Blostland
Erika Vikström is a Blostlandic politician who had served as Minister of Agriculture and Minister of Health intermittently across various coalition governments from the late 2000s till her appointment to the Commission. She had served in the Riksdag as a member of the Poppy Party from 2009 onwards.

Vikström, a licensed nurse, has made it a priority to tackle elements of an increasingly threatening Euclean obesity rate, likening the need to a campaign to curtail smoking.

Image
Migration and Citizenship: Rupert von Essen (ACDE) - Werania
Rupert von Essen served as an Member of the Euclean Parliament from 2009 until his appointment to the Euclean Commission. During this time he also eventually received the position of the National Consolidation Party (NKP) Parliamentary Leader. He is considered to be an ally of Raicevich.

His Commission comes at a time of increasing attention as migrants continue to increase in number across the Aurean Straits from war-torn Tsabara.

Image
Regions, Neighbours, and Enlargement: Antoniu Voroneț (Avant) - Amathia
Voronet began his career as mayor of the city of Cluzia, following his long-standing presence in the city during his time studying law and graduating from his university with a PhD. Following a single term as mayor, Voronet utilised his profile position within the urban area to run for a seat in the Amathian Senate. He was there for 14 years between 2000 and 2014, where he would chair parliamentary commissions dealing with Pireaea and later Etruria.

Following this successful domestic career, Voronet ran for an MEP seat in 2014 and regained his seat in the 2019 Euclean parliamentary elections. He served notable roles as a Euclean 'expansionist' within both delegations to Piraea and Etruria's planned ascension to the Euclean Community and was a notable voice in the Foreign Affairs Committee.

Image
Continental Security: Theresia Hochberg (Non-Inscrits) - Alsland
Theresia Hochberg, the only unaffiliated member of the Commission, was proposed by the Alslandic national government largely on their politically neutral position. Seen as a 'no-nonsense' persona, Hochberg's previous political experience includes service in the Euclean Parliament from 2017 until her appointment as Commissioner.

Prior to her Euclean Service, Hochberg served as Minister of Defence across Premiers from the years of 2008 to 2014, one of the few unchanging features of Alsland's dynamic political scene. From 2014-2017 she served as an advisor to the 'One Sword' lobby group, a foreign affairs and defence thinktank that advocates for a single Euclean defence policy within the constraints of ECDTO.

Image
Employment and Labour Mobility: Niina Hermansdohter (ASE) - Azmara
Niina Hermansdohter is an Azmaran politician who notably served as High Commissioner between 2019 and 2022 and running against her new boss Vivien Vallette in the ASE presidential primary. Her reappointment at the age of 65 to a role she had previously held between 2014 and 2019 has been seen as a reward from Vallette for having campaigned heavily for him in northern Euclea after conceding to him in the primary, the new President weighing putting pressure in Aalmsted.

Hermansdohter has a reputation as a technocrat from her time in the Euclean Commission since 2011 and at home for having ran a national unity government between 2008 and 2010, representing a more moderate and pragmatic tendency of social democracy compared to many younger "pink wave" politicians. A passionate Euclofederalist, Hermansdohter has pledged to "erase any existing barriers between labour mobility between our 13 countries", having publicly supported a harmonisation of pension systems across the Euclean Community to achieve this goal.

Image
International and Emergency Aid and Crisis Support: Cristòfol Mayola (MNED) - Paretia
Cristòfol Mayola was a member of the Catholic Citizens party from 1990 to 2017, becoming a member of the Patron League. He was a member of the Tosuton Assembly from 2011 to 2021. He became a major supporter of Isilda Cerqueira's policies of enhancing the forest fire task force in Paretia in 2020. After the LP's victory in 2021 he was appointed to become the Deputy Chief of Disaster Response and Aid to André Lorenço Tomás, a role in which he served until being appointed to the Commission.

He became influential in disaster relief during forest fires in Piraea and Tarpeia, helping Paretia send aid to Etruria and Piraea during the event. His specialty area has become disaster aid, and the VP government seeks his advice in these areas during disaster events.

Image
Education, Youth, Research, and Science: Maarijana Helmutsdohter (Avant) - Azmara
Maarijana Helmutsdohter is an Azmaran politician who graduated from the Groonbank Institute of Science and Technology with a PhD in Science Policy. She served in the government of Sofia Anasdohter as Health Secretary from 2020 until her appointment to the Euclean Commission, of which she was most recognised in the controversial legalising of marijuana for both medicinal and recreational purposes.

Given her degree in Science, her appointment as Education, Youth, Research and Science Commissioner has led many to believe that a young woman will help break the mould of a Commission normally perceived to be 'masculine'. Helmutsdohter's initiatives intend on helping promote 'The Euclean University' and its expansion across the continent as well as helping foster greater cooperation among the member states' educational programmes.

Image
Culture, Language and Sport: Lene Forman (Avant) - Borland
Lene Forman had been the Borish Minister of Culture since 2019. She was born in Luidingen, but grew up in Muilen-Forbroken and later in Rommen, before leaving to study at the University of Olham. She got internship in the Ministry of Culture, where she started working as a civil servant in 2006. She is a member of Centrum since 2014.

She supports strengthening the rights of minority languages both on a Euclean level as well as within the member states, and the protection of national landmarks, buildings and other cultural heritage. She has helped to set up a network of trusted translators in Borland, who are paid by the government to translate legislation as well as some public communication into a variety of languages.

Image
Enviromental and Maritime Affairs: Adrien Tourneur (MVE) - Gaullica
Adrien Tourneur is a Gaullican politician from 'Les Verts' who, up until their appointment to the Commission, had served as a member of the First Chamber of the Senate from 2011 - 2022. As an ecologist and climate scientist, their appointment to the 'Environmental and Maritime Affairs Commission' has been seen as an olive-branch between Gaullica's coalition government as it attempts to placate the greens who currently help hold up the government.

Tourneur has described his ambitions within the Commission to "prioritise Euclean natural beauty". He has suggested he intends on doing this by promoting the creation of a Euclean-level 'natural park' initiative. Further elements of his portfolio also orient around fisheries and solving fishing rights disputes - likely something to cause contention over the Gulf of Assonaire.

Image
Euclozone, Financial Stability, and Financial Services: Robbe Van Den Borre (MVE) - Kesselbourg
Robbe Van Den Borre is a Kesselbourgish politician who served as Minister for Economic Affairs under the first Peeters government from 2009 - 2011. After this, Van Den Borre quietly retired from a decades long career in domestic politics, that included a long service in the States General, before announcing a run for the Euclean Parliament during their 2014 elections. He served as an MEP from 2014 - to his appointment to the Commission.

Before entering politics Van Den Borre had studied as an environmental conservationist and had chaired a pan-Euclean case-study into the effects of sustainable economic development and conservation.

Image
Consumer Affairs: Mariana Vaz (MNED) - Paretia
Mariana Vaz entered politics as a member of the Conservative Union in 2009. She became Mayor of her hometown, Santa Imaculada, from 2009 to 2011. She later became a member of Council Chamber of the Senate, eventually joining the LP in 2015. Vaz became focused on Consumer policy during her time within the Council Chamber, where she passed multiple consumer protection oriented laws.

In 2021 she became the leading member of the VP on consumer affairs. She created a proposal for a cross-EC law protecting internet users from companies taking personal data. She also wants to create an official "Consumer Bill of Rights" within the EC. She also supports further "streamlining" relations between the consumer and producer through a commission made up of both consumer and producer representatives.

Image
Jobs, Growth and Investment: Cornelia Häberli (MNED) - Werania
Cornelia Häberli is a Weranian politician from the Democratic Alternative, the junior member of a coalition agreement with the NKP. Her appointment to the Jobs, Growth and Investment Commission succeeded her position as Minister of Social Affairs and Employment, a role she held since May of 2022 having replaced Simas Neukrosis.

Prior to this she had served as a Deputy in the Bundestag, representing a constituency in Elbenweis. She held this role from 2002 - 2022. Her position as a member of a Eucloskeptic party has caused some concern from within the forming Commission, with some members of the Euclean Parliament privately confiding they are worried about the growing "influence from the MNED".

Image
Market Regulation: Ed Spencer (ASE) - Estmere
Ed Spencer returns to the Commission, having served in Walker-Hermansdohter Commission as Legal Affairs and Rule of Law Commissioner from the years of 2021-2022.

Prior to his experiences in the Commission, Spencer served various roles within the Official Opposition of Estmere, holding the positions of Shadow Secretary of State for Economic Affairs, Shadow Secretary of State for Justice and Shadow Secretary of State for Commerce and International Trade. During this time until his appointment to the Commission, Spencer was a Member of Parliament for Harbrough West in Scitterland.

Image
Climate Change: Jan Lindblom (ASE) - Blostland
The Climate Commission is one of the most high profile Commission positions available given the gravity of the threat it poses, especially as it has increasingly become a topic in the public consciousness. Jan Lindblom, a climatologist and politician from the Blostlandic Centre, has been appointed as Commissioner -- signalling to the world and the Euclean people that someone who truly understands 'the threat' is at the helm of the Community's body.

Lindblom had served within the Riksdag from 2018 onwards, briefly serving as Minister for Ecology and Energy in the Backström Cabinet until his appointment to the Commission.

Image
Social Affairs and Gender Equality: Josephine Verbeke (Avant) - Kesselbourg
Josephine Verbeke had served as a member of the States General from 2008 - 2022 for the Kesselbourgish party of Remedie. Following the grand-coalition of the Wout Wanser-Plas Premiership, she was appointed as Minister of Equality of Opportunity. She served in this role until her appointment to the Euclean Commission.

Prior to 2008, Verbeke was one of the few commissioners to actually hold a Euclean Parliamentary role before one in her national capacity; having served as an MEP from 2002 - 2005.

Chiara Mastromarino comes under growing pressure to step down
SD hard leftists join grandee and party’s right in calling for her resignation
NOTIZIE by Giorgio Simone Parrinello
25 January 2023

The SD defeat to E+E has left the party’s leader Chiara Mastromarino facing a growing chorus of calls for her to step down. Several SD grandees have also called for her to step down to give the party a chance in 2026.

The Leader of the People’s Opposition is facing calls to resign not just from her traditional critics on the SD’s left but also growing calls among those on the party’s right, widely seen as her support base. Anger and frustration at the party’s trajectory and the defeat in the Carpodasco e Varsi by-election have united the fractious wings. The calls come as Mastromarino vowed to continue leading the party.

She told reporters in a brief statement outside the SD HQ in Povelia, “I understand there is a degree of disappointment within the party over the recent by-election, but we must keep focused on what matters. Now is not the time for the self indulgence, we need to fight this party finance bill and do so as a united party. I am ready, I hope my party colleagues are too.”

Despite her fighting talk, there is no denying growing discontentment within the federal party.

Bruno Benedetto Locatelli, the figurehead of the SD’s hard left faction posted a video on his PinPin account telling his 100,000 followers, “the SD is not heading in the right direction, do we look like a party of government? Do we look like the force strong enough to destroy the Tribune Movement and functionalism? No of course not. We need new leadership, we need a new direction, she [Mastromarino] needs to go.”

This was echoed by other hard left SD backbenchers who accused Mastromarino of failing the party. Giuliana Maria D’Rossi also posting on social media attacked her leader saying, “we are tired of the micromanaging and controlling leadership. We would tolerate it if it brought results, sadly for us, we’re being micromanaged into stagnation. Can’t change the spots of a leopard so remove the leopard.”

Petar Cvetko another told a meeting of the Carinthian Socialist Federation of Workers and Miners, “functionalism will thrive in Etruria if we let it, to not let it we must be strong and focused, under this leader we are not strong and frankly we will lose the trust of the people if we continue walking the path set out by Mastromarino. She must go.”

Though the hard-left has long criticised Mastromarino, mostly in private since she took over in 2018, the rhetoric emerging since Carpodasco is considerably pointed and public.

There is also growing criticism among grassroots activities and groups. The
Popular Democracy Group, an affiliated grassroots collective posted recorded video of a debate among members about Mastromarino’s leadership. What was depicted immediately drew accusations of misogyny agains the leader, with a number of PDG participants questioning the “viability of a female leader at a federal election”, ironically by referring to what they described as institutional and societal misogyny. This was picked up by Mastromarino’s allies, who claimed that criticism of her within and outside the party has been run of the course ever since she became the first female leader of the SD. While a legitimate argument, citing also the near constant abuse Mastromarino has faced on social media from Tribune supporters, much of it sexist, it is now only part of the story.

Much more concerning for Mastromarino and her team will be calls from the right of the party, her natural support base. A number of backbenchers have produced subtle criticism, while most have called for reflection and a reset across the party. Ugo Valletti, a popular representative from Dinara posted on social media, “there is perhaps now a profound need for an analysis of where we are and where we are heading. It does not take much to say that the SD is not quite where we need to it to be.”

Last week, Valletti told Radio Dinara, “losing one by-election is not in itself a problem. There was much baggage going into that race and turnout had fallen dramatically, we simply didn’t bring out the vote. But the current situation is not just about that election, it’s about the failure in Novalia and our stagnation in the polls. It’s also about the failure to close holes in our agenda that is giving oxygen to E+E.”

Valletti like many of his fellow senators on the SD’s right have avoided openly calling for Mastromarino to step down, though this changed last night when Renato Alberto Cambiaso told VitaRadio in Faulia, “I am afraid that Mastromarino must now consider her position. This is a distraction that is benefitting the Tribunes and putting our hard work in rejuvenation at risk. I do not believe that Mastromarino is the leader for 2026, she laid the foundations and for that I am truly grateful as a democrat and a member of the party, but perhaps we need new leadership to take us over the finishing line.”

This resulted in a number of interventions by party grandees. Giuliano Cesare Sandreani, who served as Foreign Minister under the Vinko Begovic government from 2001 to 2009, speaking on Orrrizonte24 this morning said, “sometimes there comes a time when a leader has done their duty. Chiara saved the SD from oblivion, she saved us from the fate suffered by the sotirian democrats and for that she will forever have a place in our history, but, there appears to be a culture around herself that is now undermining her and the party.”

Also this morning, a number of sources close to the SD reported that a small group of frontbench members would be prepared to advise Mastromarino to step down if the calls grow louder. Adrina Drago, widely seen as a future leader and Mastromarino’s protege is seen as the key to pushing Mastromarino out on her own terms, yet so far she has avoided discussing the situation when approached.

The same sources also claimed that a roadmap has been produced for a new leader. According to those sources, should Mastromarino resign, she will remain leader until the March party conference in Auronzo, where the party faithful will gather and elect her successor. Due to the next federal election being three years away - if the Tribunes do not dissolve the senate before then, the election would be opened up to candidates not sitting as Senators, paving the way for popular state figures, such as Dinara’s Prefect, Giorgio Amadeo Biancofiore or Schiuntrave Mayor, Lucrezia Alba Manacorda.

Only time will tell if the pressure reaches sufficient volume and mass to push Mastromarino out.

BREAKING Chiara Mastromarino resigns
Mastromarino steps down following meeting with SD frontbench and party president.
NOTIZIE by Giorgio Simone Parrinello
26 January 2023

Chiara Mastromarino has officially resigned as leader of the Social Democratic Party, though she will remain leader until her successor is elected at the party’s conference in March. She made the announcement with a brief yet cheerful statement to reporters outside the party headquarters in Povelia.
Image
Chiara Mastromarino announced her resignation outside the Casa Milo.

Addressing reporters from a lectern, the SD leader said, “this afternoon I had open and candid discussions with party colleagues and it was made clear to me that the ongoing situation around myself and my leadership was detrimental to the party’s progress. It was made clear to me that there is not sufficient confidence in my leadership going forward, I have accepted this.

“That is why I am officially stepping down as leader of the Social Democratic Party, effective upon the election of my successor in March, at the end of the upcoming party conference. It is my hope, from the deepest roots of my heart, that the party now unites under whomever succeeds me and together, united again, we will continue our steady march to removing the Tribune Movement from office, restoring our democracy, our republic, decency, kindness and building the modern and progressive nation we all deserve.

“I do so without a heavy heart, for I know that through my actions this party is stronger than it has been for years. I know that the Social Democratic Party has the means and foundations to save our country from functionalism, corruption and authoritarianism. I am regretful that I could not lead the party into the next federal election, but I am confident that whoever succeeds me will see immense success.

“I thank all the hard work my team and aides have done over the past five years and I thank the entire party for the absolute privilege of leading Etruria’s greatest party. I also wish to thank SD members for their support and trust.

“Thank you and god bless” she said.

Her stepping down followed an afternoon of frantic activity in the Casa Milo, the party’s head office in Povelia. It is understood that the frontbench team of the SD used their weekly meeting to urge Mastromarino to step down as leader, expressing concern that her remaining in office would sap confidence in her further and undermine the party’s progress since its near-extinction in 2016. A final intervention by party president, Nera Stipičević and SD Spokesperson for Finance, Adrina Drago secured Mastromarino’s acquiescence it is understood.

Mastromarino’s resignation came as a result of a number of leaks and scandals, as well as political blunders dating from last year. The SD’s shock failure to win the Novalian state elections was revealed to be the result of a highly intrusive and controlling strategy by her office, overruling a number of Novalian SD strategies and interfering with the efforts of the Novalian leadership. This was then followed by shocking revelations that she had actively involved herself in the covering up of serious bullying allegations made against a personal ally and friend. This resulted in the senator’s resignation and in the subsequent by-election, the SD was defeated by Etruria plus Euclea. The culminative effects of these issues has left the SD declining in opinion polls to the benefit of E+E but also distracting the party at a time when the Tribune government has announced controversial plans for party finance and rumours of laws aimed at stifling online free speech and independence of universities.

This is a breaking story, we will bring more details and analysis in short time.

Nainan's new government consilidates power by arresting reformists
Kencana Aang| 26 January 2023

After the hardliners took over at the beginning of the month, the government officially banned factionalism within the NPSL, reports that the Van Dieu Intelligence Agency began arresting reformist members of the NPSL and supporters of them
Image
Members of the Van Dieu's political task force in Setrong

Nainan's change in government earlier this month saw the party radicals of Quách An Tương and Hoàng Lan Mai, after the resignation and arrest of Lê Tranh Lộc, take over the NPSL. Since then the government had began to enact new laws, the biggest being the ban on "political factionalism" within the NPSL. This would mean the party's member must strictly adhere to one ideological platform, being the ideology of Tự Ý Chí.

The Van Dieu, the central intelligence agency of Nainan has had the responsibility of enforcing political thought within the NPSL and Nainan in general. Being one of the world's most feared police agencies their tactics have been accused as being state terrorism. They have been playing a major role in the change of from Lộc to Tương's government.

During the transition of government, there had been protests amongst both reformists and hardliners. Nainese police have targeted the reformists over the hardliners, reportedly over 100 being arrested. Targeting of allies of reformists have continued, with arrests of local party leaders who supported the reformist faction of the NPSL.

Reports of arrests of party members of the People's Senate and other areas of government have been made, being members of what was the reformist faction of the NPSL. The government of Nainan has been accused of cleaning out it's government before, in the early 2000s the government had undergone reforms and extreme hardliners were removed.

This time however, the reformists are being removed, and in a much quicker fashion. The Van Dieu are responsible for most of these arrest being made, Agency Director Lý Lý Huy said that those arrested were "hurting the revolution of Tự Ý Chí, their political actions go against the goals of our government and we must get rid of them from the party".

Premier and NPSL General Secretary Hoàng Lan Mai stated today that "Traitorous elements have been sitting inside the NPSL for years now, we will undergo a method of making sure these elements are not present in our great party anymore, the nation of Nainan depends on it."

Outsiders have accused the goverment of silencing the voices of opposition, but the government of Nainan is no stranger to these accusations. The NPSL regime is considered by numerous organizations to be one of the most authoritarian governments on the planet. Mass arrests of party members who have strayed away from the party line is not new, but these groups of arrests are the largest in a long time.

Recent events in Nainan have echoed the resurgence of ideological hardliners in Coian authoritarian states, such as Shangea and Zorasan. Nainan appears to be the next country to have this happen. Outsiders speculate that Nainan is preparing for an election to consolidate the hardliners further into power. The State Director Quách An Tương has not made any major on these arrests yet, but it is believed he will make some kind of comment on it soon.

BREAKING: Developing hostage situation at Popular Victory office in Encerosa
Reports that the hostage takers are members of the separatist New People's Army of Tosutonia, police are currently surrounding the office

BREAKING: Police in Encerosa are responding to an active hostage situation at one of the city's Popular Victory party offices. Reports that a group armed gunmen entered the building earlier this afternoon and began to take hostages who are now being held at gunpoint. Police quickly responded and are now surrounding the building. The total number of hostages taken is unknown, there are no reports of any fatalities, we do not know yet if the gunmen have began negotiating with police. The total number of hostage takers is currently unknown.

The gunmen are reportedly claiming to be members of the New People's Army of Tosutonia, a left-wing nationalist Tosuton separatist organization that is a revival of the People's Army of Tosutonia which was active from the 1950s to the 1970s and was responsible for numerous car bombings and terror attacks in Tosutonia and Paretia. Their likely demands are independence for the Tosuton people in the form of a republic.

This particular Popular Victory office had been in the news before. It was the same office which the leader of the political party League of Socialists for Tosuton Independence was arrested at by federal police while protesting, causing violence and unrest in Tosutonia over the summer. Popular Victory has recently been seen as the new enemy of the Tosuton separatist movement, especially the left-wing parts of it.

Hostage crisis ends after police and special forces shoot 3 hostage takers, killing 2, and arrest 6 others
Terrorist separatism returns to Tosutonia in the form of a hostage taking of VP members in Encerosa. Police and special forces shot and killed 2 of the hostage takers, wounded 1, and took the rest into custody. Encerosa and Tosuton police are on high alert right now.

Regional Tosuton police patrolling the streets of a high alert Encerosa
Encerosa, Paretia: The hostage situation at the Popular Victory office in Encerosa has ended after a little over an hour long standoff between police and hostage takers. Negotiations were short between them, the terrorists' demands were for "An independent Republic of Tosutonia from Paretia". The situation deteriorated and police decided to try and take down the hostage takers. Paretia's special forces of the COE were sent in and able to subdue many of the terrorists. They entered a short gunfight with three, they shot and killed two of them, and one of them was wounded. The rest were subdued and arrested.

The terrorists were identified as members of the New People's Army of Tosutonia, an armed Tosuton separatist group that is a rebirth of the People's Army of Tosutonia that once existed in the 20th century. The group was founded in 2006 but was largely inactive since then, it had been responsible for bombings of infrastructure before, but this would be it's biggest act yet.

The city of Encerosa has been on high alert since the situation was ended, police had been patrolling the streets of the whole city. The Federal government has also been on high alert, of course it is currently governed by the Popular Victory government, and one of it's offices had been attacked.

Premier Cerqueira made a short response to the events today "We are deeply saddened to hear of what has happened to our friends in Encerosa. But we are all happy that they are safe now. Incredible work was done by the Paretian Special Forces, Federal, and Local police. The threat of radical separatism terrorism will be dealt with, we will work with the Tosuton goverment on making sure this is so." She plans to speak to media more later today.

Regional Tosuton Premier Ignasi Altarriba has also made a short statement about the events in Encerosa "It breaks our hearts to see our fellow Tosutons do such things to each other, we will respond swiftly in dealing with any other terrorist threat made by the NEPT, they will not tear our nation down with these acts." Altarriba also plans to speak more on the events later tonight.

Leader of the separatist party the LSIT, Artur Pagès Satorra, who was arrested at the same VP office last year for protesting against their government, condemned the attacks. "Violence and attacking our fellow Tosutons is not the way to secure freedom for the Tosuton people, my heart goes out to those who were made hostages by these terrorists."

SD leader and former Regional Premier of Tosutonia, Talia Caselles, has not responded yet to these events but will likely condemn the acts and call for the government to deal with the terrorist threat in the region.

Encerosa is still on high alert as of right now, Regional and local police are on patrol in the city to make sure there are no more threats left at the moment.

Thomas Satelburg - 3 February 2023

Zorasan claims drone strike on Girota has killed Yemeti opposition leadership
According to Zorasani military intelligence, Issa Kahsu, Ater Deng and Aba Tekle, the three leaders of the opposition government to the Government of National Unity and Reconciliation of Ubaxle Asad, were killed in a drone strike earlier today.

Image
Aftermath of the drone strike on the Grand Hayk Hotel in central Girota.
Girota, Yemet -

Earlier today Zorasani military intelligence officially confirmed that a drone strike that took place earlier today in central Girota was launched by Zorasani forces in the country and claims to have killed the leaders of the Girota-based opposition to the Zorasan-aligned Ubaxle Asad's Government of National Unity and Reconciliation.

The drone strike took place at approximately 8:47am. It is believed to have been launched from a Zamboor-3 drone that is based at Anwar Motuma International Airport and Air Force Base, which has served as the core of Zorasan's intervention in Yemet since its inception in late 2021. It remains unclear how Zorasan obtained the intelligence that led to the strike, as the leaders of Yemet's Irfanic opposition were likely meticulous in the security of their locations. All believed to have moved between multiple safehouses within the city of Girota regularly, often independently of the others and communicating through motorcycle couriers.

The city of Girota has remained defiant against Zorasan and Ubaxle Asad despite being placed under siege conditions. Famine and starvation, already widespread in Yemet due to the ongoing conflict, is believed to be worse in Girota than any other part of the country. Issa Kahsu, former Speaker of the People's Congress of Yemet and constituonally the legitimate President of Yemet, Gen. Ater Deng, the former commander of Yemet's deceased President Retta Iskinder’s Independent Special Presidential Guard and Lt. Gen. Aba Tekle, second in command of the ISPG and often mistakenly attributed as its commander, were at the core of this defiance.

They led an anti-Asad movement based not on questions of constitutional succession or democracy against authoritarianism or even civilian versus military rule but rather ethnic lines, objecting to the Gero and Kaabura-dominated government led by Asad.

There has been no comment on the drone strike available from the opposition forces; access to the internet was rare in Yemet prior to the outbreak of war. Some local media has been able to take photos of the drone strike's site, outside the Grand Hayk Hotel, and reportedly up to fifty men and women were killed or injured by the strike. Local media was unable to confirm whether the dead included the leaders of the Girota opposition or not.

It is unclear what effect this will have on the Irfanic opposition to the government of so-called President Asad if true. Although the death of its leadership, if true, will likely lead to it splintering, the nature of the opposition means it is unlikely to fade any time soon. The new leaders will be just as unlikely to negotiate with President Asad as their potentially deceased predecessors, but their potential death would leave Asad's government as the only option for nations to recognise as being Yemet's legitimate government. But until their death is confirmed by a more reliable source than Zorasan, and in an information-light enviroment as Yemet, it is best to treat these claims with a healthy skepticism.

Most expensive Vinalian production, Days of love. Set to premier next Monday.
Vinalinsk

The Vinalian soap opera Дні кохання, Days of Love is set to premier next Monday, February 13th. Premiers in numerous televisions around the country. The show is the most expensive production undertaken by a Vinalian company, and features scenes filmed in Vinalia, Carucere, and Soravia. The show is highly awaited in both Vinalia, and Soravia, it has already been translated into Etrurian, and Luzelese for distribution in Ardesia. Markets primarily in Île d'Émeraude, are already looking to translate the show into Gaullican. This is just one of the many lucky breaks for the entertainment sector of Vinalia. The Vinalian entertainment sector is one that has recently been hit with many successes, and what can be described as good luck. Vinalia is being considered everyday to be a stronger player in the entertainment world, punching far above its weight.

Days of Love, follows a young colonist, Artem. Played by Vinalian actor Romashka Ochiuriushka. As he struggles to discover love, and discover meaning in colonial Vinalia. Other high caliber actors involved in the production are Milana Syrota, who interpreted the main antagonist in the 2020 soap opera “In love with an unknown”, which was received positively by audiences around the world. Vinalian actors Andrey Basha and Soini Pikhalyonok are also slotted in the work, as is Soravian actress Marjana Solovei, working on her 2nd Vinalian show. More veteran actors such as Slavir Pasternak, and Valeriy Ruzhentsev with the iconic Khrystyna Mykhaylichenko the “Vinalian Lioness” in her return to Vinalian television following years in Chistovodia. The cast is padded by veterans and new faces, a strange strategy when looking at the price tag of such a show, lauded as the most expensive Vinalian production ever.

Artem is the young son of a wealthy Velkarichka plantation owner, Ivan (Slavir Pasternak). Who is ruthless in his extraction of wealth in the golden age of Vinalian cash crops, from masses of slaves. Artem struggles to find meaning, as he opposes the tactics his father uses, along with the use of slaves, steeming from his reverance to Episemialist teachings. Ivan and his mistress, Angelika (Milana Syrota) plot to banish Artem and give the plantations over to Angelika’s and Ivan’s son Kokshar (Andrey Basha), who is as ruthless as his father. Artem has been in love with one of his fathers housekeepers, Vera (Khrystyna Mykhaylichenko) for many years, but neither can return their love, due to Vinalian colonial law.

The story has been described as fiery, and dramatic. “This show is like nothing I’ve ever worked on before. Its impact, its story, its design. Can’t be compared to anything I’ve worked in” stated Khrystyna Mykhaylichenko. Who described it as a story fit for an instant classic. “You won’t be able to compare this to anything else. Its an entirely new level” described Valeriy Ruzhentsev.

The show was filmed in Velkarichka in the Milkana Manor, a large estate that currently grows sugar; however it's mostly a tourist attraction. The site was closed and remodeled in 2022 to allow the crew to build the necessary structures for the show, which is advertised as being “genuinely in period”. Teasers reveal intricate dresses, and elegant set designs. The show also features quite extensively Soravia, where production took place for several months in Samistopol. Carucere also welcomed the production which favored the island over Île d'Émeraude. A set was constructed in Carucere and is used extensively for the first half of the show. Caruceren actors Jean-Luc Bassot and Hector Boulle are also attached to the project.
Produced by Ivan Ihnatenko, the series is written by Kobylitsa Konoplya and Radah Mudryk. Its directed by veteran Kobel Konkov, who has stated it will be his final show directed, but his magnus opus.

The show will premier monday following an episode from Vinalia has got Talent, where Milana Syrota works as a judge. The show will play Monday to Friday at 9pm on Channel 7, however you can catch all the episodes in the Channel 7 app, available in all devices, or by entering Channel7.com.
