Syantivashan Delegation, League of TWI Assembly

Ranya Seshadri of the Syantivashan delegation in the Assembly rose up and spoke to her fellow delegates: “Namaskar, brothers and sisters of the Westerns Isles. It is a great honour that His Majesty the Raja has bestowed upon me the task of representing the Kingdom in the League. I wish to assure His Majesty and the other delegates here that I shall perform my duties to the best of my abilities...”

She signalled her aide to hand a file of documents and she continued her address: “Which is why I would like to bring up the deteriorating situation in the Luvahiran Archipelago. In a clear violation of international law and norms, the nation of Esterazdravo has forcefully invaded the archipelago and is, at this moment, unlawfully occupying the area. They justify this by calling it for ‘greater good of God'... May I remind this esteemed body that holy crusades to spread the Christian faith across the world are a thing of the past, surely not fitting in our 21st century world? The Esterazian occupation can best be described as an act of imperialism that suppresses the Luvahiran people and their rights. Because the League cannot allow this injustice to happen, I shall put forward a motion to call for their withdrawal of the archipelago, so this dispute they have with Nisryn can be resolved through other, more peaceful means."

Resolution No. 27, Concerning the The Nisri-Esterazian Crisis of the Luvahira Archipelago Dispute

Reaffirming our mission to uphold universal principles of international law recognized by all civilised nations;

Aware that among these principles is that of self-determination, which is the right of people to decide their own destiny in the international order;

Concerned by the fact that the Catholic Empire of Esterazdravo has forcefully annexed a majority of the Luvahiran archipelago, which is a violation of the international prohibition of the use of force;

Noting that the continued Esterazian occupation is a violation of the principle of self-determination, which the Luvahiran people have the right to enjoy;

Hereby:
  • Condemns the unlawful actions of Esterazdravo in the Luvahira Archipelago, in an ongoing dispute with the Republic of Nisryn over the aforementioned archipelago.
  • Demands Esterazdravo to immediately cease their occupation, and withdraw all their forces from the archipelago.
  • Encourages the parties in the dispute, Esterazdravo and Nisryn, to resolve their differences through peaceful, diplomatic means.

Chae nodded as the honourable Syantivashan delegate to the League of the Western Isles spoke. Though the war at discussion was reasonably insignificant to Cheongsan as of yet, he knew that any conflict had the potential to disrupt economic flows and as a strongly global economy, Cheongsan flourished best when the rest of the world was at peace. He indicated via an aide his intention to address the assembly, then patiently waited as the honourable delegate finished her speech. Once called to rise, he did so, addressing the delegates through the complex web of interpreters which made the league run smoothely.

"Honoured colleagues, the world is like a calm pool in the garden, and we are all but precarious lillies. When one corner starts to make trouble, it is the rest of us who must shake. All wars, be they in the name of creed, race, national interest, or any other motivator, are our collective enemy and it is best that we collectively reject war in all her forms and strive ever for peace. This regional conflict over a small archipelago concerns every one of us here today.

That said, one must always balance the strong moral imperative to cultivate peace with the pragmatic reality of the situation. Is a principled loss better than a victory of moral compromise? Let the historians and philosophers reason such disputes. Our job as diplomats is to do our very best. In this vein, while the Cheongsanese delegation support its principles entirely, we take slight issue with the second clause of this resolution. It is highly unlikely that either side will pull their entire force back. Better would be to call for a ceasefire to allow the league to take stock of the situation. There is existing precedence, if my memory or that of my hallowed predecessors remains true, for such factfinding missions to be undertaken by peacekeepers. Indeed, the idiomatic pandora's box of annexation has been well and truly broken, and I fear that to enforce a return to the status-quo-ante-bellum will require the league to take sides in the conflict which, until we have put our feet on the ground and investigated the local feeling, will not be an adequate respect of the right to self determination.

The Catholic Empire of Esterazdravo, as the aggressor power, ought to receive our diplomatic condemnation, as should all schoolhouse ruffians who would upset the rules based international order. But the league, as a peak body of multipolarity, must always act in the way which will prevent the most loss of life.

The Republic of Cheongsan supports this resolution, with qualification as expounded, and we invite other delegates to share their thoughts. Most especially, we hope that the combatant nations will open their ears and tongues to civilised dialogue and work for a lasting peace."

He sat down and conferred with his aides. He hoped that what had been said was broadly agreeable, and that the Syantivashans would not take his concerns as an attack on their diplomatic efforts.

"Whilst the government of the United Queendoms has shown intentions and has begun the process of cooperation in humanitarian efforts with the government of Nisryn, the clear goals of Belantica in the end, as with other members of this Assembly, is to bring the conflict to an end. Belantica has already condemned the actions undertaken by Esterazdravo, most notably violating the sovereignty of an independent nation. With that in mind, the nation of Belantica doe support this resolution, however, given the situation on the ground, both sides must reach a ceasefire agreement before proper negotiations can occur. Our delegation does see any potential ceasefire as a risk for the conflict to resume, as our delegation does not have the confidence that the Esterazdravian government would uphold their end of the deal, which has been brought up by other members of this chamber."

"Thank you Ms. Ranya and Mr. Chae for stating your opinions on our defence against the opprosive nation known as Nisryn. If you cannot already tell, Nisryn has forcefully taken the territory of Luvan (Luvahira) from our nation years prior to this event. If you do not believe our cause is righteous then you should visit Luvahira to see the archaeological sites recently discovered that state, clearly, about Esterazian beliefs. Keep in mind, these sights date back hundreds of years ago which demonstrates Nisri having controlled the land under unlawful manners. Nisri's new sources are also nothing but smokes and mirrors. Take the top headline by Nisri newspaper Shimmering Moon, 'Esterazian Forces kill Nisri boy'. Quote:
"The Esterazian forces killed a Nisri boy in the city of Ixmul (Īznum) after retreating from a failed attack on Buacyn (Vubākīn), the health ministry stated.It is believed Udaulif who killed the boy was shortly burnt to death by a Molotov cocktail during the retreat, according to eyewitness reports."
On further investagation, by our government, we could not find anybody meeting the description of the person who murdered the boy. No Esterazian soldiers have confirmed to seeing a boy being killed during the retreat as well.
Until Nisryn hands over the land that rightfully belongs to us I am afraid there is a slim chance for peace negotiations.

If you have any further statements to say, please continue."

Ranya Seshadri listened intently to the addresses given by her fellow delegates. While maintaining a serious outward appearance, she was quite joyous and proud to hear that her first ever resolution was met with such approval and constructive criticism. Off to a good start, she thought. Then, it was time for the Esterazian delegate's rebuttal and Ranya was keen to hear how they intended to explain- and perhaps even justify- their actions.

Esterazdravo wrote:"Thank you Ms. Ranya and Mr. Chae for stating your opinions on our defence against the opprosive nation known as Nisryn. If you cannot already tell, Nisryn has forcefully taken the territory of Luvan (Luvahira) from our nation years prior to this event. If you have any further statements to say, please continue."

“A claim over a territory based solely on archeological findings which 'mention Esterazian beliefs' is very questionable, as the honourable Jerigan delegate stated before me. With all due respect, it is very weak against the concrete Nisri claim which bases itself on the land being founded as a Sylusi by Launus Douiz. Perhaps the League should indeed conduct a further investigation, as the honourable Mr. Chae suggested, into the history of the Luvahiran archipelago and conclude which party has the rightful title to the territory. In my view, the opinion of the people inhabiting Luvahira, which can be ascertained through polling and referenda, should also slightly be taken into account during this fact-finding mission. The question being whether they would like to be a territory of Nisryn, a territory of Esterazdravo, or even wish to be an independent state.

Furthermore, I would like to say that, assuming the Esterazian allegations of annexations by Nisryn themselves are true, they do not excuse subsequent annexations by Esterazdravo. Nations should not respond to a violation of international law, by violating international law themselves. After all, an eye for an eye makes the whole world go blind.

Lastly, I find it hard to believe the conclusions by your government concerning the murder of a 14-year old Nisri boy at the hands of the Esterazian military. It is very easy to conclude you have done nothing wrong at the end of an investigation you have conducted yourself.”

Altrecht sat back in her chair while watching the young delegate from Syantivasha. She was rather impressed of how the delegate respond to the rather weightless claims of the Esterazians and calling it for it is: a clear violation of international law.

"To build off the statement made by the Honorable Lady of Syantivasha, we all can agree that throughout the course of history, cultures have a tendency to move around to different areas, and that the borders are vastly different from what they were hundreds of years ago. However, such claims carry little to no in the 21st century. It is important to remind the Esterazian delegation that this is the year 2022 and not 1022.

Futhermore, their other claim to their justifications is of course religion. Whilst such holy wars and "crusades" were waged in the past, they have no room in our modern world. In many cases, religions of many different kinds are committed to promoting peaceful cooperation and interfaith relations, bridging gaps to find common ground."

Chae rankled at the short, sharp, thoroughly ignorant remarks of the honourable Esterazian delegate. Such blatant ultranationalism left a poor taste in his mouth, and he inwardly sighed thinking at the similarity of his outlandish claims with those of Cheongsanese nationalists he had had the unpleasant honour of meeting during his long career.

"Regardless of the validity of these historical claims to land, which, as my honourable colleagues of the assembly have clearly elucidated, cannot be considered a serious justification for war in the modern and civilised era, or of the validity of one single eyewitness testimony, the current invasion is illegal and unconscionable. Say we give you the most charitable understanding of events, that being that this one child did not die and that hundreds of years ago this land was Esterazian, the League operates within a rules-based system that places states as sancrosanct, equal, sovereign bodies. One cannot violate the territorial integrity of another without the explicit sanction of the League. If Esterazdravo felt that the afforementioned archipelago has been illegally siezed in such a way that a domestic population who feel strong ties to the Esterazian state are being oppressed to a serious degree, namely ethnic cleansing or genocide, they ought to have taken their case to the league, allowed multilateral investigation, then presented the case that the land might be better fitting as part of their own nation. Other solutions, such as protection of minority cultures, local autonomy, and many others could have been considered. Instead, by launching a unilateral and illegal military action, Esterazdravo has attracted broad condemnation.

The prerogative of the League is, in the immediate term, to secure a ceasefire along the existing lines of control. Then, investigations can take place of the situation, with an eye to ensuring the rules of war have been followed to the letter. If the honourable delegate insists that this war is based on archaeological evidences and not on any valid humanitarian cause, it is likely that future action by the league will demand full withdrawal from all occupied territory and may, as it has the full right to do, employ force to ensure such measures are respected. As states, we have a responsibility to protect peace and ensure that lives are not lost in vain."

Asteria bat Nitza flashed a momentary frown at the conclusion of Cheongsanese delegate's address: such a weak conclusion for such a strong, promising start. She rose to speak. "With all due respect, the Syantivashan proposal's call for an immediate withdrawal is superior to a call for a immediate cease-fire. There's no reason to allow an illegal occupying power the benefits of possession during an investigation of potential war crimes, nor is there any reason to allow the people of the Luvahiran Archipelago to suffer under their oppression at the same time. It therefore seems more in harmony with the League's goals to support the Syantivashan proposal as it is."

The delegate of Nisryn to the League Conalue Laybecan stayed calm, not speaking and waiting for all delegates to end their speech. Afterwards, he stood up and opened a few files, "This is a collective report of research made on the ethnicities, religions, languages, cultures, et cetera in Luvahira and their definite similarities to Nisryn's," he said while distributing them to the delegates who discussed the crisis.

"To start, the research states that 78 per cent of current inhabitants of Laufihyna consider themselves Nisri, 12 per cent consider themselves original Luvahirans or of their descent, 4.1 per cent consider themselves of varying foreign origins, and 5.9 per cent consider themselves Esterazian. As we can see already see, the amount of Esterazians in Nisris is 1 in 13. The research also suggests using evidence that is to be discussed later that the original Luvahirans are of southwestern Nisri descent. Religiously, most Luvahirans are adherents to the following religions in order: first, Tasuyism with 56 per cent. Second: Islam with 20 per cent. Third: non-Esterazdravin Catholic Christian denominations with 18 per cent. Fourth: Esterazdravin Catholic with 6 per cent. Tasuyism is a religion that originated in Nisryn and the religion with most adherents in Luvahira. Islam spread to Luvahira by the northern Nisri migrants, who were mostly Muslim. Linguistically, most of, if not all, spoken and regional languages come from the Ayslynu linguistic tree, whose languages are mostly spoken in Nisryn. Culturally, Luvahiran culture is very similar to a southwestern Nisri realm, which is the evidence that creates the suggestion that original Luvahirans are from Nisryn."

"Regardless, the Esterazian justification for the invasion, which is to who is not aware, the greater good of God is a very unreasonable and subjective justification, which I'll reply to with this: who is the god whose good is the massacring of children?"

Phillip stood, glanced at both the Ezterazdravian and Nisryn delegates, and began to read a statement from his paper.

"The Jerigan government in His Majesty the King, in council with his ministers, has determined that, should this resolution fail to pass, the Jerigan government will support, in any manner necessary, the Nisryn armed forces in their endeavor to rid themselves of this invader."

“We see that the new delegate from Syantivasha has not entered our hallowed halls empty handed. For that, we are thankful. She addresses an important matter which is a source of stress, anxiety and instability for the international community. It is also an affront to those who follow the Christian faith to see our beliefs twisted to justify offensive wars of territory and conquest - an almost comically immature line of rhetoric for a so-called government to try and conjure. In this sense, we agree with the Havallish delegate’s assessment of this war.

Further, the international community here in this chamber has already made its judgment of the Esterazian Government. As such, our remarks are admittedly insignificant. Regardless, it is important for our nation to clearly state its position and to call on other nations to ensure that acts such as those by Esterazdravo are emphatically rejected. In our opinion, this does not break neutrality doctrine - it is not inherently a declaration of supporting Nisryn, but rather it is standing up for the fundamental norms of international law in the clearest of possible circumstances.

We will not stand in the way of this resolution, nor any reasonable means to bring the war to an end. What is occuring before us is imperialism. It is no holy war. We believe that the Syvantivasha delegation’s resolution is a sensible and common sense approach, if not sufficiently pragmatic in its approach so it suits the appetite of the international community.

Do not be fooled by the Esterazian delegate’s comments. Archaeology is a study of the past - the deep, deep past. I would like to draw the attention of the Chamber back to the brief remarks the Jerigan delegation made. Fellow honourable delegates, if we are to follow the logic that the Estarazian delegation is aiming to follow I have bad news for you! Very bad news! Especially for a few countries in the Southern Sea! There are at least five countries that are no longer legitimate states but rather belong to the Ahnslen dominion, by this logic. I trust that if any of the delegations here agree with the delegation of Esterazdravo or vote against this resolution, they will automatically believe in an Ahnslen claim to territory that belongs in a satire newspaper and not in reality?

Let us not let a whisper of the absurdity of this logic seep into the hearts and minds of our people, let alone the echelons of government. As for the matter of the supposed misinformation about what is happening in Luvahira - the truth here is that it does not matter. We all know where thousands of Estarazian soldiers are today. They are not in Esterazdravo, where they should be. We know where thousands of the sons of Nisryn are. They are being shot at by people who should not be on the land which they are standing on. If these fundamental and rather unequivocal facts are somehow false, then, there is some evidence that this resolution should not pass. This resolution is not about the death of a child at the hands of an immature imperialist force. Consequences for that should follow if it can be proven that it occurred. However, it is not the subject of the resolution at hand.

Withdrawal must happen, not a ceasefire. There are people who are not where they belong. Say, if there is a group of drunks on the street causing a ruckus, would you allow them to stand around the block they have been causing disorder in - or would your police move them on, or perhaps take them back to the police station or back to their homes? The same applies here. The police station is the International Court of Justice, and their homes are in the internationally recognised territory of their own nation - Esterazdravo. This is where the invading forces and the governments who endorse and encourage such acts as this resolution tries to prohibit belong.

Ainslie will support this resolution when it comes to its voting stage, and we will ensure that it is enforced appropriately through reasonable and proportionate means.

We do hope that similarly minded nations such as us, who are traditionally neutral in matters such as these, will support this resolution.”

And what I'm gonna tell now are direct words from the Geristoke Parliamentary and the churches wishes. However,” he straightens. “we are concerned that in this resolution there has not been a mention of those who support the Esterazians.” He glared at the Vacrusian delegate across the room. “I hope,” he continued, “that the Vacrusians cease their support of Esterazdravo’s crusade-like actions before they become the ones to be condemned.”

Jorge Batista stood up, glanced at his fellow delegates and cleared his throat. He picked up his paper and began to read the statement.

"It is with great honor for me to represent Baumes today. We, the people of Baumes are truly saddened by the rapid escalation of the conflict. On 22 October last year, Esterazdravo abruptly invaded and took over a majority of the Luvahira Archipelago by military force and stating that it is for the greater good of god. If I may ask, which god commends the killing of civilians and imperialism? To use the name of god as an excuse is an unspeakable act, and we are saddened by such act. May we also remind everyone that the intentional killing of civilians and "willfully causing great suffering or serious injury" when wounding victims, is a war crime. Such people who commit these horrendous war crimes are individually liable under international humanitarian law for their crimes. Esterazdravo is no exception and Baumes recommends an investigation into this be done as soon as possible.

The Esterazian delegate stated and I quote: 'Nisryn has forcefully taken the territory of Luvan (Luvahira) from our nation years prior to this event. If you do not believe our cause is righteous then you should visit Luvahira to see the archaeological sites recently discovered that state, clearly, about Esterazian beliefs. Keep in mind, these sights date back hundreds of years ago which demonstrates Nisri having controlled the land under unlawful manners'. Clearly, archaeology should not be used to define modern-day national borders. As the Ahnslen delegate has stated, archaeology is a study of the past. We live in the 21st century, and declaring war due to historical names or under the name of god are not a legitimate justification for war. And also, if we are following the logic of historical claims, then we have bad news for you. There's a chance that your nation does not exist. No, in fact, it now probably belongs to the Baumish realm, which now is in control of most of central Argus and various other regions across the Isles. With all due respect, historical claims from centuries ago should not be taken as serious reasoning for this war.

Crusades are a thing of the past, delegate. The forceful spreading of religion is no longer something to pride upon in modern and civil society today. Instead of waging holy wars, religions should work together to promote peaceful cooperation between each other. Religion should not be used as a division in society, and we need to instead promote a peaceful existence between each other. War is not a conflict between states. Rather, it is a conflict between governments. We must remind ourselves about the innocent civilians in Nisryn and Esterazdravo. Did they really choose to go against each other? There are no real winners in wars because in the end, it results in the loss of lives, homes and jobs.

The Baumish government has idly stood by the entire conflict. We have decided to remain neutral and see how the conflict unfolds. However, seeing no real progress, it seems that Baumes will have to condemn the aggressor; Esterazdravo. Esterazdravo has failed to give a clear and just reasoning for the war and its actions during the conflict are appalling. This is a clear form of imperialism, something that should be condoned in our 21st-century world. Fellow delegates, we know that we've all been impacted by this conflict. Whether you realize it or not, I think it's safe to say its effects can be felt throughout the Isles. Whether it be lawful or not, war will always be the root of evil and greed. What is happening in front of us is no holy war, or righteous war or any sort. Those are merely pathetic excuses for the imperialistic goals of Esterazdravo.

Thus, it is with great interest that Baumes will stand by Nisryn. Esterazdravo's claim to the Luvahira Archipelago are illegitimate and should not be recognised. They have no reasonable excuse to this conflict and are clearly just there for their imperialistic ambitions. This war has gone long enough and requires a swift and morally right decision to be made. Lived have been lost and more are to come if a final decision is not to be made. Therefore, Baumes will have to SUPPORT Resolution 27.

Furthermore, we also urge our Vacrusian allies to cease their support of Esterazdravo. It is the morally right decision, and we know that you know it. Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for your time and consideration and we hope you follow suit in our decision."

"After careful consideration and reviewing the case, the Federal Republic of Uprea has come to the conclusion to support the enactment of proposed resolution No. 27.
The presented arguments point heavily in the direction of imperialistic intentions by the nation of Esterazdravo, as well as the willingness to go to the cost of human lives on order to fulfill a cause without any claim. Uprea will not stand in the way of a resolution hoping to put a stop to unnecessary violence and imperialism.
The Federal Republic of Uprea further wishes for the League to establish an international taskforce in order to investigate the possible acts of violence committed by Esterazdravo with the intention of redrawing international borders."
As everything here is fictional. Statements made do NOT represent my IRL views.

The Vacrusian delegate, Jospher Statzer, stood up and began reading out his statement.

"Ladies and gentlemen, it is my pleasure to present Vacrus on the topic of the Nisri-Esterazian Crisis, His Majesty, Priest Aurotimus VI, is continuing his support of Esterazdravo, the Bible states: "Put on the full armor of God, so that you may take a stand against the schemes of the devil." (Ephesians 6:11) this is a statement taken by Vacrus very seriously, Esterazdravo should have the right to take over the Luvahiran Archipelago, because the Luvahiran Archipelago are filled with sinners, it needed to be taken over, to wash away all the sins of the people living in Luvahiran Archipelago, the Archipelago is also part of the devil's plan."

"Therefore, Vacrus is against Resolution 27." he continued.
