Finals Weekend:

A long weekend towards the end of the year means only one thing in the Licentian football season; finals weekend at the LTI Stadium in the capital of the Isles, Montfort. On the Thursday, both semi-finals for the KickAdvisor Senior Parish Championship take place with the winner of each confirming their promotion to the Licentian Premier League, followed on the Saturday by the final of the Supercel FALI Cup. On the Sunday, the Liga B Champions Trophy playoff is swiftly followed by the SPC final, where one team comes away with another trophy to go along with their promotion to the Premier League.

SPC Semi Finals:

Hope Bay (SBPSL) 3–2 Langbank (CPSL)
Ringmuir (APSL) 2–3 Kirkintill (MPSL)

7SR Review

Postby The Licentian Isles » Sun Dec 11, 2022 4:52 pm

“Hello there, and welcome to the LBC’s Football Folk podcast. I’m Finn…”

“... and I’m Vicky, but perhaps more importantly, we’ve got a very special guest as we review the season that just went by. We’re joined by former St Thomas and Cyan-and-Gold centre forward, Tiago Weiling. Tiago, how’s it going?”

“Not too bad thank you, very happy to be here.”

“Now this is going to be an absolute bumper podcast for you today, which is why we’ve drafted in one of the hardest-working players in the Isles, but we’ll start this APC review in that unconventional manner: we’ll be looking outside of the APC, and in some ways forward to next season, with the teams that will be joining us for next season. Tiago, what did you think of finals weekend?”

…

“There’s no doubt that Saltburn Wanderers will have a point to prove as they return to the APC next year.”

“Absolutely Finn. This is a team that have really been unlucky not to stay in the top tier longer in previous appearances, and they’ll be looking to right that on this occasion. They’ll need a top performance from players like Sarah Cumming if they’re to have any chance of surviving, but if anyone deserves a bit of luck it’s the Anglers.”

“Let’s talk a little about the team they knocked out as well. St Ninian’s Athletic may have finally arrived in the way their owners wanted if not for that extra time loss to Saltburn.”

“There may be some disdain around St Bart’s for the way that St Ninian’s are alleged to be “buying the league”, but you can’t argue that they aren’t impressive. They’ll be back, you would think.”

…

“We’ve got the return of a team from Colesham too, even if Rovers lost the SPC final to Saltburn.”

“The top tier doesn’t feel quite right without a team from that city, does it? Whether Athletic or Rovers would win the league was the big question in the CPSL for a long time, but it was the Rovers who pulled it out in the end.”

“They’ll have to be at their best to stay up. They feel most at risk of going straight back down, even accounting for Saltburn’s torrid luck in the top division.”

“I think that’s fair Tiago, but let’s see who they can bring in.”

…

“To the APC proper now, and we start at the bottom. Vicky, what on earth happened to Newton Arran?”

“This has felt like it’s been coming for a while. Sure, Madadh Kerr wasn’t the only good player in that side, but after he left for Chromatika it felt like they never really replaced what he brought to the side, and cracks showed very quickly.”

…

“Do you feel Kirkintill were unlucky to go down Tiago?”

“Listen, they weren’t as poor as Newton this season, but that’s a team that didn’t seem to have made the right calls in the transfer market. They focussed all their new signings in the middle of the park, but didn’t strengthen at the back or up front.”

“But equally, they were only two extra goals away from being even with Shieldhill on all the usual tiebreakers.”

“Yeah, that’s fair, and I think if we’re coming onto Shieldhill now, that’s a team that needs change desperately.”

“Well, we had the news this morning that Mungan MacAuslan has left the club by mutual consent, no surprise to anyone. Is that the big thing they need to do?”

“Honestly? No. They need a shake-up on the park as well as off it. Things went well for a while there, but it’s just become stale, and I’d be surprised if we didn’t see some big names move on.”

…

“Did Waterfleet suffer more after they lost Eilidh Sim?”

“Absolutely, but they never looked quite like the side they were last season. Last season’s performances being what earned her that move to Tikariot of course.”

“And of course, Tikariot City did start to look better with her in charge.”

“For sure. Back to Waterfleet though: what do you think of the rumours that Marcia Folkhard may return to the club as manager?”

“She’s looked good in charge of Excelsior, and she’s clearly committed to staying on the island after playing for Fleet. Is she ready for that step up to the APC though?”

…

“St Bart’s Dutch: how about them?”

“A frustrating season for sure. Het Oranje haven’t looked worse for a little while, even if they were pretty safe by the end of the year.”

“It feels even more frustrating put next to United and their performance as well, I would imagine.”

“What needs to change for them?”

“They need some go forward in attack in my opinion. It just felt a bit toothless at times, without any single player clearly being at fault.”

…

“I don’t feel like it’s just the loss of Will Wood that hurt Blackheath though. Something just didn’t click.”

“It doesn’t feel like it’s the fault of the strikers either: Postel is a proven boot in the Isles with Wanderers, and there’s no real doubt that Harper has some quality too.”

“What do you put into these rumours that van der Veen will get the sack?”

“If I were him, I may be tempted to walk before he gets pushed.”

“Whether he goes or not, he deserves credit for what he’s done with that club.”

…

“Hope Bay looked really comfortable in their first season in the APC.”

“Which is no surprise really, given how long they’ve spent knocking on the door of the frankly sadist promotion system.”

“No, that’s very fair I think.”

“And what do you think of Uros Ostojic?”

“He’s a talent, that’s for sure. I think Hope Bay will struggle to keep him around, but if the scouting department can keep picking out gems like him, they might be able to stick around in the long term.”

…

“Will Gaelic Club be frustrated not to capitalise on the form that saw them in third after 15 games?”

“I think fans will just be delighted for some more positive news! Elaine Ashdown has rebuilt this team quite nicely, and one or two more pieces added could allow them to compete for an IFCF spot.”

“Tiago, where do you think they most need an extra addition?”

“The midfield is strong, and there can be no complaints about Ruaridh up front. I think what they need are some changes in defence.”

…

“Do you think Anton Lemaitre will be worried for his job Finn?”

“I don’t think so Vicky: I think Stonehouse have made it clear they’re willing to stick with this project, given it isn’t a style of play we’re used to seeing in the APC.”

“I say this as a friend of his: the project of developing George Turnbull into a winger hasn’t worked.”

“You’re right Tiago, and I don’t think it’s a lack of trying on Turnbull’s part, he’s just not built for that role.”

“Does he move somewhere else to play in his more natural position then?”

“I guess he would have to, but a Stonehouse boy like him is going to have a big, big decision to make if he wants to move away.”

…

“A season that Farnworth can be happy with?”

“I think so. Annabel Porter has kept that same philosophy since taking over, in developing youth players, but once again that incredible talent pool around Farnworth is paying dividends for this club.”

“MacMillan, Innes, and Djurovic the latest examples.”

“Absolutely, but let’s also talk about the signing of Arximiro Valdovinos.”

“It looks inspired, he’s a good player coming towards the twilight of his career, but look at what he’s done, both on and off the pitch, in terms of supporting the youngsters around him.”

…

“St Bart’s United: the surprise story of this season?”

“Absolutely. Last season they narrowly missed out on relegation, this time narrowly missing out on Challengers Cup football.”

“What changed?”

“Pertz-Frolt Abe and Pascaline Camille. A pair of excellent signings, once again proving why Licentians keep going back to the well of Chromatik college football.”

“The attitude changed too. Fabian Willems didn’t just make good signings, he got the best out of his squad.”

…

“We come to the two Montfort sides. What will Wanderers think after this season?”

“Consistent IFCF qualification is a big thing, that I think very few Whites fans will be complaining about. But it’ll undoubtedly be frustrating to lose out to the Royals again.”

“They may want to make a few changes as well, but they’re another club struggling for room under the foreign player cap.”

“And, allegedly I must say, the one that is most vocal about lifting that cap or making it more lenient at the very least.”

“That feels unlikely to happen any time soon: they should focus on working within it.”

…

“For SC, a year that was all about one woman.”

“Caitlin is a great friend of mine, we spent years together in the national team. She deserves all the plaudits she’s getting as she heads into retirement.”

“What do you think comes next for that giant of the game on these Isles?”

“Who knows? I don’t imagine she’ll stray too far from the game, but I suspect she’ll also be grateful to spend some more time with her partner, rather than travelling the multiverse with club and country.”

“What do SC take away from this season, other than her retirement?”

“They’re waiting for a few things to click again after some changes at the club, but let’s be honest, Vulav-Wanar will not be the one to rush into any big decisions. They are famously patient.”

…

“Is this a season that will lead the Celtic board to keep Georgie Hardie around?”

“That’s the big question I suppose, and it depends on how patient they truly are. There’s no doubt that the building blocks are in place.”

“With Umbridge and Wood up front, this is a side that could win titles.”

“Especially with Li Romaine contributing plenty of goal threat as well.”

“You imagine that if they don’t break through next season for a real title challenge, the patience will be over, but Hardie might have one last chance.”

…

“The end of an era at your old club Tiago?”

“If Sienna goes, absolutely, but I don’t know if you’re asking for the inside scoop Finn!”

“Do you know anything?”

“Honestly, I don’t. I don’t!”

“If she takes over with the Cyan-and-Gold, as the rumours are heavily suggesting, what’s the big challenge for the new Saints boss?”

“Building resilience in that team, below that incredible starting XI. They’ve got the best team in the country on paper, but you’ve never got those first eleven names on the team sheet 100% of the time.”

“Particularly when you’re fighting on all fronts, as St Thomas were all the way to the end of the year with that CEdC win over Platinastigrade.”

“The former St Thomas player in me, as much as I’m trying to stay unbiased, says that I’m very glad that Sienna goes with a trophy, if she is going to go.”

…

“And who do you think should replace Bruce if she goes?”

“That’s the big question I suppose. A few years ago, the obvious answer would have been Joep Martens, but his move to Tumbra probably took him out of the estimation.”

“Do they go for a foreign manager?”

“That seems to be the trend, but who knows?”

…

“And last, but certainly not least, the APC champions for this year, Glenmount Town.”

“Is this win a holdover from the era of Chen Huikang, or can the new manager Rohan Cammers claim it as his own?”

“Difficult to say really, because Chen well and truly revitalised that club before his move back to his homeland. But Rohan Cammers hasn’t just inherited this team and sent them out doing the same thing: he gave them a new energy, and turned them into something exciting and fresh.”

“Nobody could really deal with that side, could they?”

…

“Is it right to call Grace Hall the best player in the league right now?”

“Difficult to say that, I think, there are so many good midfielders, both around her for Town and in the league.”

“She’s certainly a rising star though, no doubt about that.”

…

“And after a few hours, I think at this point, of review, that’s us for the day. Thank you Tiago for joining us for this marathon, and thanks Vicky as always. Football Folk, we’ll see you next season.”
