As the lunch period drew on more general conversation about the exams just gave way to more general chitchat about where everyone was from and what's driving them into the intelligence sector, not so much who recruited them, though that came up, just more about why. Most answers boiled down to a new sense of patriotism, a desire to go above the basic commands of service in the military. Some like I.F. who were recently naturalized citizens and most native born and of course many of them had parents who served during the war. One, ironically enough was from Kemono, a young kid when that raid went down but today not privy to all the details of why that happened. "so now I would like to make sure nobody can do that to my fellow countrymen again" she said.

Before too long though, the lunch period was over it was onto the next phase, tests. The good thing was, most were already educated, not to say everyone was going to ace this test but at least they had enough grasps to score a decent variety of ranges. Times up, the proctor called. Now the next question, whom among them were familiar with computers or rather not at all and much dismay this was a case where most raised their hands. A handful were at least savvy enough thanks to things like Naval Radar training or weather reporting of the like.

David looks to most of the trainees raising their hands with a nod.

"Very well, this was to be expected I suppose. Fortunately, we've taken that into account when we were preparing your arrival, and so you will have regular informatics lessons spread among your schedules. The first one will start now, where you will learn the basics of a computer, how to use a keyboard and a mouse, as well as basic functions and use of a text software and an internet browser.

For those of you who are already a bit familiar, between lessons, we count on you to help your colleagues who are not. Now, if you will please follow me."

And so, David leads them to another room just a few meters away in the corridor, where tables are aligned in rows, with computers, keyboards and mice. In the room, three people are standing, two women and one men.

After the trainees have seated, one in front of each computer, David exchanges a few words with his colleagues, before departing and closing the door behind him.
Meanwhile, the teachers introduce themselves to the trainees, and for the next two hours, they teach them about the general functions of a computer, how to use a text software and an internet browser. Each exercise starts by a general lesson projected on a giant wall screen in front of the trainees, then the teachers pass in the rows to see what their students are doing, and help them in their tasks if need be...

Getting into the groove of things, it wasn't bad and rather easy to understand. The instruction was clear enough and when in doubt, reboot! There were those among the group who had used computers before either from their time in the military or related government offices and they too could provide help. Though not without hiccups at first.

"Press Any Key to continue. Huh, where's the Any key? I see Esc, Ca-tarl and Pig-Up."

"Momo" IF was among those who had computer knowledge given she was foreign. "Hehe silly, it just means to press any key on the keyboard."

"oooh"

Even though the Astarians agents teaching the trainees can't help but sometimes laugh seeing their students having some difficulties, they do not do so in a mocking manner.

Once the session has ended, some paper sheets are given to each AHSCAian, detailing the lesson they just learned today. They would have to memorize it for the next lesson in a few days.

David Wellig appears again, this time wearing a pair of track pants, running shoes, a sports T-shirt and a light vest.

"Okay everyone, even though there's snow outside, that's no excuse to not keep in shape. So, go back to your dormitories, we have provided PT clothes for each of you, tailored to your measurements we got from your Offices. Put them on, and meet me in the central courtyard in five minutes. Go!"

"Yes sir!" They all yelled and hustled on back to their dorms to change into the clothes provided for them. Stashing their notes wherever for safekeeping they assembled into the courtyard as instructed. It was cold indeed but they were holding up well in spite of that.

Once the trainees are back in the Courtyard, they are met by David, alongside three other instructors, two men, (one bald with a beard, the other looking a bit Asian), and one woman, a bit shorter than the men, with short dark hair.

"All right, we're going to run along an obstacle track." explains Wellig. "You will have to keep going and try to pass every obstacle at your own speed. Don't dilly-dally though. Let's move!"

And with those final words, followed by a whistle from one of the other instructors, the group starts to run.

For the next hour and a half, the trainees would be subjected to a hard obstacle course. Climbing walls, both with hand and with ropes; hanging bars; jumping tires; crawling under barbed wire; all the while getting flowery remarks from the instructors such as:

"Move your ass IF! This is not your fucking Sunday running routine!"

"If you're going for the paramilitary Wakana, that's some weak ass moves on the wall! Come back and get on the rope faster this time!"

"Get lower under those wires or I'll make you eat the entire track snow Faria! Lower! Lo-wer!"

Once they are finished, the trainees are then led back to their barracks, where they are left to enjoy the rest of the evening as they see fit. Dinner would be served in the mess hall...

They got yelled at, they got put down but they knew this was apart of the training. This is what they signed up for, this is what they wanted. Any yelled command any demand to be better than their sorry selves always were met with "YES SIR!" They were going to be field agents after all they needed to be top of their game, for each other and for their sake in the dangerous world of espionage. "YES SIR, LOWER!"

"YES SIR, I'LL DO BETTER"

"YES SIR, I'LL PICK UP THE PACE!"

As soon as it began, it was over yet again and now it was downtime. Some sore, but most in good spirits, execpet one, Tamako Oshima. Sitting in solitary refusing to leave the shower. Wakana was the one to console her, "I'm not good enough. I could barely carry myself out there." She lamented

"Hey, we all had our moments. You saw me, I tripped over my own ass plenty. Come on, you're good, I know you'll make it fine. Just gotta take it one day at a time."

Wakana returned to the Mess again after that, the others inquired "She's fine, I think I got her to calm down a little. She'll rest up the rest of the night."

"Not like a Navy Sailor to start cracking." IF said a bit worried

"This is beyond basic" Faria said, "I think we all know this is what's going to separate us from everyone else. We're the first so we gotta be the best. We're being set up to be field agents."

"We just gotta support each other."

"Agreed."

Just like for her fellow trainees, Oshima's distress was not lost by the instructors. They would surely poke her with it the next morning, for the first psychological interviews.

The next morning...

After the usual Reveille bugle sound and once breakfast has passed, the trainees are led to another building, where they are all left to wait in corridors, sitting on chairs. Unbeknowst to them, they are going to pass their first psychological interviews.

"Tamako Oshima." calls a blonde woman from a room.

Once Tamako has entered, she finds herself in a small room, with a table and three chairs. Two of the chairs are on one side of the table, facing her, and on them sit the blonde woman who called her in, as well as another woman with brown hair. With a hand gesture, the blonde woman invites Oshima on the remaining chair facing them.

"Good morning Miss Oshima." says the blonde woman as she looks at some papers in front of her. "My name is Ophelia Lectil, I am a psychiatrist. Here is Agent Fumwell from the ACI.The goal of this interview is for us to know more about yourself.
Now, could you please tell us a bit about yourself, where you're from, your background please?" asks Dr Lectil as she and Fumwell click their pens and get readt to write.

Being called to order by Reveille, honestly this felt a lot like basic military training most days, I suppose that worked out. Tamako was a bit unnerved by her lackluster performance during physical training today she was feeling a little better, just as Wakana told her, the next day would be a new day and she just had to keep at it. Everyone dressed and ready for the day, breakfast came first then they were told next order of training, psych exams. Tamako was first to be called in.

"Very well, Tamako Oshima, I'm from Aurora, Served in Her Majesty's Navy making rank as Lieutenant before being approached for this new mission by Admiral -Officer Kurago. Though prior I was up for Honorable Discharge, I was considering civil maritime service but I had a desire to further serve my country, beyond the military."

Lectil and Fumwell listen to Tamako with interest, nodding at times and taking notes. So far, her self-description matches what they just read a few minutes prior in her military files collected from Kurago's Office.

"In your dossier, you are described as cool-headed, usually keeping calm when problems arise, and guiding your subordinates. However, yesterday, you faced what could be described as pretty usual obstacle course, maybe a bit harder." says Fumwell as she looks back up to Oshima.

"I understand that being thrown in an unknown country, far from home and in a different weather than what you are used to might be hard to adjust to, but it's nothing compared to what will come. I am not saying this to blame you, Miss Oshima. But as an ACI agent, I have to ask: are you prone to insecure issues like this, and if yes, do you manage to overcome them quick?" she asks with an intent gaze.

She pondered a moment how to answer such a deep question, no doubt her moments of doubt were haunting her and sticking out but her intentions were here, she believed in this mission's cause, to protect the nation she calls home in more ways than simply picking up a rifle. "I've had moments like that before. Even back in my Naval Training days. I'm from an inland village on Aurora originally, and you're probably very aware of our country's training method for naval cadets. My first voyage was tough and for a moment I felt I wanted to quit but a superior officer bucked me back up and I overcame the challenges. I feel I had the same experience here, you're right, a bit of homesickness, different environment has taken me down a peg, but Wakana, he's a good man, his pep talk has put me back on. Give me time, I'll rise to the occasion, I'll prove I'm capable."

The Agent and the psychiatrist continue to listen and take notes while Oshima explains herself. Indeed, the two women were aware of how the AHSCAians were training their naval cadets, it was very similar to how other navies, including the Astarian one, were doing.

"Very well." says Lectil after a minute as she puts down her pen. "Do not worry, we have faith that you'll be more than capable once the training is over, it's why such things take time. Everyone has its insecurities, as long as you manage to overcome them, it's what matters most."

"Indeed." continues Fumwell, before leaning forward, her elbows on the table, her chin resting on her crossed fingers. "However, I want one thing to be clear Lieutenant Oshima: there won't always be a comrade or superior officer to help you morally when you have insecurities. I don't know where your future missions will lead you in the future, but if you find yourself alone, the only one that will be able to reassure you will be yourself, plain and simple. Because if you don't, you might endanger yourself, the mission, and your country. So, while you're a guest here, if you face similar insecurities, try to face them on your own first before asking the help of others."

"That does not mean that our door will be closed if you feel the need to talk about anything." adds Lectil with a reassuring tone. "We will always be there if you need help. But my colleague is right, sometimes, you will have to face your problems by your own first and foremost."

"Are we clear on that?" finishes Fumwell with a raised eyebrow, but a reassuring smile on her lips.

It was tough but it was very much truth she had to get herself together and know how to keep her own morale and spirits up. Standing up tall to answer firmly and affirmatively "Yes, crystal clear. I will take those words to heart and continue to do better. I want to be apart of this, I want to continue my service for my country and comrades. Thank you sirs, ma'ams. Anything further or shall am I excused?"

Lectil and Fumwell nod at Oshima's determination. However, when she asks if she can leave, the ACI agent looks at her intensively, and says a simple "Tssk Tssk." Her gaze meanwhile, carries this message.

You have determination, that is good. But for now, you do what we say, when we say it. Not the other way around.

"That won't be all, no." says Fumwell after a few seconds. "We have more things to talk about. Now, since you have been selected for the paramilitary wing of the Shadow Knights, it means you will carry out clandestine operations, or black operations. For reminder, while covert operations are meant to conceal the identity of the party that carried it out, black operations are meant to entirely stay secret, and not be known to the public.

And one part of these operations, might lead you to kill someone. Which leads me to our next question, have you ever killed someone, or a living being for that matter? And if so, what did you felt?"

"Ah yes, of course." She probably was a bit anxious about this screening that she was ready to bolt out the door but for now, she had to be patient and listen and answer wisely. A pretty simple question, well not simple. She did enlist in the navy not sure what they really expected. "Yes, I have. After cadet school, I was tasked on an anti-piracy mission in the deep seas. Uh I believe that's the territory you know own. Anyway, I did have to kill. I felt bad about it, at first as a still young navy sailor but in time, I was able to process it as apart of my sworn duty to protect my country from all enemies. I'm aware, killing might indeed be apart of my mission with a military background, it's expected."

Like always, the psychiatrist and the ACI agent listen, nod and take notes. Then...

"What is your sexual orientation?" asks Fumwell as if it was the most natural thing to ask.

"If you're finding the question very personal," continues Lectil, "it's because it's supposed to be like this. We do not ask this out of our own hearts. But when you'll be deployed, the people facing you might attempt to use very private elements of your life to incriminate you or make you crack. But, if you have nothing shady to hide, they will have a harder job to do so.
So, please answer the question of my colleague honestly. The contents of this meeting, like all your training, are secret after all." finishes the psychiatrist, awaiting Oshima's answer.

"Yes, I see." They were right, this may be no big deal to those in the UIS but other places regard it way worse so best be honest. "I've had relations with both in the dating scene so yes I go both ways in that regar" She also went into some other details about those subjects, might as well lay it all on the table now. "And that's all I have to say about that."

Lectil and Fumwell continue to take notes as Oshima speaks. After reviewing what they have just wrote, the two women look at each other, and each other's note. What the AHSCAian officer had told them was indeed very personal, but was not shocking at all when it came to talking about those topics.
All in all, after everything they had just listened and noted down, their impression would be that the trainee in front of them was someone with a lot of promise, despite her insecurities. But as Fumwell said before, she had time to work on those during her training.

"Thank you for your honest answers Lieutenant Oshima." says Fumwell with a smile as she and Dr Lectil put away their notes in two briefcases. "That will be all for our first interview. We shall meet again soon. Dismissed." finishes the ACI Agent, nodding to the trainee.

Once Oshima would be outside, she would be made to wait sitting on the chair for others to pass their own meetingss. Tthen, once everyone is outside again, for the first time since they arrived, the AHSCAian would be separated in their respective groups, the future case officers and the future paramilitary agents.

For IF and the other case officers trainees.

IF and her group would be led to a classroom, where another agent, a tall woman with short auburn hair, would welcome them.

"Good morning everyone, I am Agent Misoski. Today, I will see with you all the bases of what will be your future jobs of case officers, which to put simply, is to recruit sources to give you information for you to send back to your Headquarters.
In front of you are notebooks to take notes and pens. Feel free to interrupt me at any time if you do not understand something."

And so, the lesson starts, with Misoski projecting videos and slides on a screen to explain the bases of the job, including the bases of the MICE protocol that Daniel and Patricia talked about with Noir and Kurago a few days ago...

For Oshima and the other paramilitary trainees.

Contrary to their friends, the paramilitary agents are led outside the building, where they board a small bus who drives them elsewhere on the Farm compound, a few minutes away.
Upon disembarking, they find themselves in a small building, which they would quickly realize is a shooting range. There, a muscular man, with brown hair and a small beard, wearing a baseball cap, greets them.

"All right, good morning maggots!" says the man in a powerful voice. "Agent Fanrick, but for you all it will be Sir, understood?!
Now, all of you are bound to become the paramilitary arm of the Shadow Knights. So, to start your training on this part, we will see today how you handle a gun."

As he says that, he motions to a set of tables where a certain number of small briefcases are put on. Upon inspection, the trainees would see that each briefcase is labeled with their name and rank.

"Open them." says Fanrick with a smile to his students.
Inside, a Masada 26 pistol with a flashlight mounted on a picatinny rail, with two mags, a box containing 50 rounds of 9mm ammunition. And to top it all, a small holster to put it on a belt.

"That's a Masada 26 pistol, one of the weapons currently in use in our armed forces, although it's being replaced." explains Agent Fanrick. "The gun that each of you has in front of him or her, is going to follow you throughout all your training, like in a boot camp of any army. Take care of it. I will explain to you now how it works, so please carefully. You will also find in the briefcase the notice of the gun to use later."

And so, Agent Fanrick starts explaining how functions the Masada 26 pistol to his students. Once it's done, he guides them to the shooting boxes, where each one has to wear earplugs and active earmuffs, before they get to practice their shooting skills on targets. All the while with David Wellig observing them discreetly in the background...

"Understood. Thank you and we shall be in touch." She saluted and exited the room. With that the next phase began for everyone, the field agents ushered into a classroom to learn more of the basics of espionage, MICE, the shows and signs to watch for who to corral and of course who among them to watch out for, you never know when an agent becomes a turncoat and lest it be too late when you do figure it out. Everyone taking long notes, paying attention diligently and taking in information.

Outside the paramilitary corps were getting their next set of training in.

"YES SIR!" They shouted at their first question. It was like being back in boot camp again but they expected it to be so. The cases all had what would be assumed to be their issued sidearm or at least just this one for training, either way looks like weapons training. As the explanation went on, each took time to really examine the weapon carefully, the mechanics of it, how it operates, checking the chamber, the magazine slot and so on. Getting a feel also meant to get a sense of how it is in a defensive stance, a offensive stance and an at rest stance as well.

Once the classes are finished for both groups, lunchtime has arrived, and so they are all sent to the mess hall.
For the paramilitary agents, each one has to relinquish their guns to Agent Fanrick before leaving the shooting range.

For the afternoon, the students are all gathered regardless of groups, and go for their second informatics class. This time, the class will last all afternoon, and aside from continuing the bases learned the day before, they will also start learning the use of spreadsheets, peer to peer mechanisms, and finally, get some notions on the dark web, with a live demonstration from the instructors using a special software to access it, and find some drugs and guns to buy.

"Remember, what normal people see on the internet is only the tip of the island." says one of the teachers at one point. "But just like any island, it has a large base hidden underwater. And this base is where all the monsters hide."

Deep sea mysteries indeed as the exploration topics began discussing the dark web. Ordinary civilians would have to be weary of traversing this deep into the black abyss but these pupils of the shadows, this might very well be their home in need to conduct covert and clandestine operations. Imagine what could be done, make a purchase to set someone up? Hire someone to entrap? Endless possibilities everyone made their notes and explorations on the lesson.

Once the class has ended, the trainees are gathered for dinner. They are then left with some free time, although before letting them go, David Wellig strongly advises them to learn and memorize what they have learned so far.

The next day...

After breakfast and washing, the AHSCAians are all led to a large classroom, where Wellig meets them at the front.

"This morning, I will give you a basic presentation of what makes the ACI an intelligence agency.
I will start by listing the different directorates that make the agency. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to interrupt me."

And so, for the entire morning, Wellig presents how the ACI is organized.

At the top, the Executive Office. Its mission is to lead the agency, and the Director whom you saw two days ago has a direct control over the Board of Directors. The Director reports to the Cabinet, the Imperial Majesties and the Director of Imperial Intelligence.

The Directorate of Operations.
Responsible for collecting foreign intelligence by human intelligence sources (HUMINT), and covert action, including assassinations. The Special Activities Division is the paramilitary arm of the ACI, and falls under this directorate.
Other missions include training of foreign services, and in the case of the Shadow Knights, the creation of a whole service from the start.
Wellig explains to his trainees that he falls under this Directorate.

The Directorate of Intelligence.
Responsible for collecting intelligence by signal and electronic intelligence (SIGINT/ELINT), and for analyzing and organizing all intelligence the Agency receives, whether human or technical.
Subdivised in Regional Offices and Specialized Offices, such as counter-terrorism, nuclear proliferation, economics, ...

The Directorate of Innovation and Strategy.
Responsible for establishing intelligence priorities, collaborating with foreign services, and researching new ways of collecting intelligence, creating new gadgets, etc.

Somehow even the chain of command and basic bureaucracy of it all was pretty interesting. Probably because as first generation Knights, they'd likely be some of the eventual leaders and directors someday as new recruits and appointees enter the agency. Right now this was the structure of the ACI their foreign trainers, but it was of course to likely be a slight reflection or at least a show of things to come as their organization becomes more organized, even if it ends up being simplified.

Satisfied that the trainees have understood everything, and do not seem to have any other questions, David ends the lesson and leads them towards the mess hall for lunch.

Once lunch has ended, the trainees are once again led to the area where they conducted their first psychological evaluation the day before, and get to pass once again with the same examiners.
While the two Astarians facing each AHSCAian continue asking questions, some being the same as the day before, they adds questions to go deeper in the trainee's personality and morals, such as:

"For how much would you be willing to sell secrets to another nation?"
or
"If you are caught doing something wrong where you are deployed, and the other party threatens to reveal everything to your agency or family if you do not do as they say, what do you do? Do you comply or reveal everything to your higher ups?"

Everybody's answers differed, some could hold firm and iron willed others admitted they'd probably cave under the pressure.

"I'd want to know the dirt they had on me first before I compromise anything." I.F. Said about the question

"I'd come clean"

"I'd take my chances and wait for the fallout"
Others say they'd avoid a situation that might get them into some trouble before the fact.

"No way, I'd never compromise my mission over something silly. My mission must come before any pleasure that could get me into trouble."

"I'd just take them out before they get the chance to tell anything about me. Nobody said this would be a white horse industry, am I right?"
