Not sure, problems with backend code is a very common thing for most websites. Technology isn't perfect so something will eventually mess up along the way.

This isn't the first time there's been a nation with borked stats, although it's the most extreme case that I can remember seeing: IIRC we were told before that it's caused by nations being founded just as the Update hits the point at which they're appearing.

It's doesn't help that they are using the same coding language since this website was first made. But hey, who am I to question the way Max Barry thinks, keeping the same code might just be apart of his grand scheme to take over the world and legally change the United Nations to the World Assembly.

I can imagine the sysadmins/backend devs getting news of this and just laughing their asses off, I'd totally be doing that if I were in such a position here.
I hope we can get a definitive answer as to what happened but I fear we might not to avoid someone doing this intentionally.
