WLC 41
TRAVEL GUIDE

The Cassadaigua Board of Tourism would like to welcome you to our great nation for the 41st edition of the World Lacrosse Championships.

Many of you are here to support your nation that will be playing their games here in Cassadaigua, but there will additionally be many that come here as a neutral fan, simply to enjoy the greatest lacrosse competition in the World. This guide will provide information that will help you get the most of your visit, so that you can leave happy no matter what the ending result of your nation’s fate becomes in the competition.

Part I: About Cassadaigua

1)Firstly, where is Cassadaigua and what is the best way to get here?

Cassadaigua is located in the region of Rushmore, and more specifically south-central Rushmore.

The best recommendation to get here is to fly in, unless you are from nearby in Rushmore, you may just want to drive or take a train. All Cassadagan cities have a major airport, and the nation has an advanced rail system as well. If you insisted on traveling by sea, there are some easily attainable port cities to make it very convenient, but we suggest flying in.

2) Will I be safe? What is crime like?

Cassadaigua is no more or no less safe then any other nation. During the World Cup, you can confidently expect and enjoy world class security to ensure your utmost enjoyment at the games and the communities in which they are taking part. The security presence will be noticeable throughout, but also have been highly trained in these situations, so they will not bear an overwhelming or intimidating presence. If one is intimidated by it, then they were probably planning on doing something wrong in the first place.

3) Tell me more about your female-dominated society. Are male tourists safe?

Cassadaigua’s society is different then what is seen throughout most of the world. In our nation, the female is the dominant gender and is superior to the male. This should not be surprising if you have followed our own national sport teams in even the slightest of ways. There are some groups who feel that men are greatly oppressed in our nation, but that is not really the case. If you are a man, and you are visiting Cassadaigua, as long as you are aware of our somewhat different culture, you should not have a tough time fitting in. After all, Cassadagan men that play by the rules here and respect their role can be very successful themselves. As long as you respect our culture, you should be fine while you are here. If you act disrespectful, then don’t be surprised if you are soon put in your place. You are expected to follow all Cassadagan laws, even if it is not a law in your own country.

4) I’ve been to nations that have talking ponies, or banned cars, or taxes on every little thing. Should I expect anything like this?

Cassadagans love horses, but there are no talking ponies here. At least not that we know of. If we have any sentient immigrants from nations like Equestrian States, they keep a very low profile. Cars are very much a way of life, and our taxes aren’t anything out of the ordinary, and if anything are a little lower then average. Cassadaigua is modern, economic powerhouse. There are no unusual factors associated with the country, other then the gender differences.

Socially, Cassadaigua is open to members of all faiths, and we respect your right to worship your respective deity in the way you see fit; or to not worship one at all. Homosexuality is accepted in the country, though we can’t promise that some random drunk in the stands or on the streets won’t make offensive comments.

As far as drinking is concerned, the legal age is 18, though many get away with underage drinking as it is not as aggressively policed as it may be in other lands. However, do not drink and drive. If you are caught, you will have a greater jail sentence then you might be expecting, and if you kill anyone by drunk driving, you will receive the death penalty.

Smoking anywhere in public is banned, but legal in your own home. This applies to both cigarettes and marijuana. All other recreational drugs are banned.

Part II: Host Cities

CONCORD HEIGHTS: Dagan Airways Stadium (Capacity: 83,000)

Concord Heights is the capital of Cassadaigua and hosted many international championships in the past. This includes the World Cup, as well as several editions of the World Baseball Classic. The city, which is also the most populous in the country, has a lot that one can do, whether sports themed, or not. Chances are, you are coming here for sports, so feel free to visit the Cassadaigua National Sports Hall of Fame. Here you will learn the stories of the legends of Cassadagan sport, including those who have their numbers retired from the soccer team on monument wall in the north end zone of the stadium (the concept here is like Monument Park at Yankee Stadium). While at the Hall of Fame, you can also learn about other Cassadagan legends and earn new or greater appreciation for those who helped us become the first nation to win a title in the five greatest sports in the World.

Those wishing to do something non-sports themed can find additional museums across the city, including the national museum which pays homage to the past leaders of the nation. You can also take a guided tour of the grounds of the Palace itself where the Queen resides, though access to the Palace itself is not open to public.

Games TBD

BRATTLEBORO: Five Star Mobile Stadium (Capacity: 85,000)

The stadium is sponsored by Five Star Mobile, who have become Cassadaigua’s most well known company in terms of sponsoring sporting events. That has been seen most in NSSCRA where not only did they host the Five Star Mobile 500, but they hosted the Five Star Clash, a competition that was willing to award money to people from anywhere. The company has been great with gearing contests towards fans, and that should be expected during the World Cup as well. Brattleboro was not always a large city, became that way with the rise of the technological age. The prestigious Brattleboro Technical Insitute played a big part of that, and graduates remained committed to the area. People from Brattleboro are affectionately referred to as, “Brats”. While here, feel free to visit the Brattleboro Regional Transit Arena in the city and utilize the public transit system that was modernized by the entity from Banija.

The city these days has something for everyone, but it does not try to hide the fact that it caters more to the younger demographics then it does older citizens.

Games TBD

GRANDE MOUNTAIN - Peak’n’Break Stadium (Capacity: 66,000)

When Cassadaigua opened the doors to international bids on stadiums, Zwangzug-based Peak’n’Break, known of course for their delicious line of muffins and other baked goods may have been taking a bit of gamble. Grande Mountain is a big city and a deserving one, but it also does not have a great reputation throughout the matriarchy due to some disturbing gender rights issues that took place here in the past. In fairness to the city, a lot of that is so long ago that it should not even be mentioned anymore, but it may have made bigger Cassadagan entities hesitant on sponsoring the facility. That did not stop Peak’n’Break, and now the company will see their name on the bigger stage.

The city gets its name due to the fact that it is in the north-central mountainous portion of the nation. It might not be the season right now, but feel free to come back during the wintertime to enjoy the fantastic skiing opportunities here! This is the city where Male Equality Now keeps its headquarters, so you could always pay them a visit if you want to learn more about their recent accomplishments and future initiatives.

Games TBD

NEW LAKELAND- Qusmair Stadium (Capacity: 77,000)

The city of New Lakeland was annexed by Cassadaigua a while ago, so it did not initially hold Cassadagan values. Because of that, there was always gender equality in the city. However, as it has become assimilated into our culture, that has changed slightly. Regardless, if you wanted to go somewhere in Cassadaigua that did not really feel like Cassadaigua, this was the place for you. It can be difficult city to describe, because those that live here and the overall northwestern part of the country take pride in their heritage, but at the same time will bleed pink just like anyone else here does in terms of the supporting the national team. Recently, teams from the city have been very successful.

This stadium, sponsored by the Qusmo-based Qusmair allows that nation to still get some attention during the World Cup. It’s a stadium that recently got a facelift but more work is planned in the future to remove some of the luxury boxes that there are too many of, and replace them with standard seating.

Games TBD

After the failures of the 28th and 29th World Lacrosse Championships, and especially the 29th edition where Banija got eliminated in the group stages of the WLCs for the first time ever, everything was torn down. The Olympic Committee of Banija seized control, and voted the sport's independent governing body(a rarity in Banija) out of existence. Various reforms were introduced. Chief among them- rid themselves of those who failed. The entire coaching staff was purged, and with it, not a single player who was on the WLC 28 or 29 roster was invited back to form the WLC 30 roster. Those high up in Banija called the WLC 29 group stage elimination, on home soil, of a nation that considered themselves an international lacrosse powerhouse an 'absolute embarassment to the country' and vowed for deep reforms to ensure that this did not ever happen again.

This, of course, happened before the 30th WLCs, in Cassadaigua. The Banijans were able to escape the group stage, once again, but fell to an ancient power in this sport- Sarzonia, by a score of 10-9, in the Round of 16. It was followed by a disappointing entry at the Champions Challengers Cup, where they fell to both Baker Park and Sarzonia in West Guiana, to finish 0-2. In the 31st WLCs, the Banijans finally overcame recent struggles by geting back to where they felt they belonged, the semifinals, though they fell at that stage in Baker Park. While they regressed at WLC 32, only going .500 in the group stage and getting knocked out in the Round of 16 by the tournament's top seed, they've restructured the squad. While they kept the defense and goalies, they made big changes up top, replacing all 7 midfielders on the roster, as well as changing out a number of attacking players. The WLC 33 cycle began strongly, with the team winning the Moravica Lacrosse Invitational en route to going 6-0 in group play. However, they were downed by Sarzonia in the quarterfinals, once again giving the Banijans an early exit from lacrosse's premier tournament.

WLC 34 was the most success this team has had in quite a while. While the team only got 2nd place in their group, their 4-2 finish put them into the knockout stages. They hit their stride in the knockout stages, beating a trio of lacrosse giants- West Phoenicia, then Sarzonia, and then the Commonwealth of Baker Park, en route to their first final since WLC 21. While they were favored in the Final, HUElavia was one better, downing the Banijans by a score of 14-9, as they came out of nowhere, in their first ever WLCs, and found themselves crowned champions of the world. After a quarterfinal elimination WLC 35, Banija was back at it in WLC 36, going undefeated in the group stages, including an upset victory over longtime rival Abanhfleft, who have delivered Banija so much pain in this sport while we have failed to return the favor.

They reached the semifinals, before playing their dreaded Fleftic opponents. There was a sense of optimism in the camp brought to them by their AO championship that preceded this tournament. But an Abanhfleft team that looked down and out brought the high-flying Banijans down to Earth, reminding us exactly who was the boss in this sport as they eliminated us once again in the late stages of this tournament, en route to their record sixth title. To follow it up with more pain, we played our other chief rival in this sport, Sarzonia, in the WLC 37 Semifinal. Once again, a high-flying Banijan team was brought down to Earth by an archrival, and Banija simply watched from the sidelines as our fierce regional rivals won their sixth ever WLC title, while Banija went on to pick up our record fifth third place finish at this tournament.

The Banijans, particularly in recent years, have been on the brink of glory in this tournament. They have been to the WLC Semifinals for four consecutive tournaments- and despite finishing on the medal podium all four times, they have yet to lift the big one. The sport's dominant power, Sarzonia, has been a particular thorn in their side. In the last three consecutive WLCs, Banija has found themselves eliminated by the world champions, Sarzonia. WLC 37 Semifinals, Sarzonia rocked them by a score of 15-8. WLC 38 Final, Sarzonia rocked them again to win their second straight title. And in the re-match at WLC 39, a tournament where the Fleftic demons were excised, Sarzonia earned a close, 13-10 victory, to complete the threepeat and leave Banijans salivating.

This most recent cycle has been a knife in the gut of Banijan fans- and then, hope. With the WLCs brought to home soil last time, we thought we could achieve a different result. But Sarzonia proved exactly how much better they are than the rest of the field, by defeating us in a final in Herzegovina City, for our fifth straight podium finish and our third straight second place finish(all lost finals to Sarzonia). That caused the head coach, Allen Budaye, who was 70 years old, to declare it quits. But then, hope galore at the XVI Summer Olympiad.

A big fat asterisk there for the sport being a demonstration event. But still- the Olympics aren't known for their consistency, and yet, here they were. Both Banija's men's and women's teams went to the Olympics, and dominated. Neither lost a game as they both had undefeated runs, celebrating with each other as they each took home victories at the demonstration events. While they weren't Olympic gold medalists- still, champions of an Olympic tournament. And with a new coach in tow for the unified team, there is hope galore. Can those Olympic titles launch Banija to new, historic heights- finally downing Sarzonia and winning lacrosse's premier event?

Usually, Canadian Dominion would use a goose or some other waterfowl bird. Still, this time around, the CDSA chose to use a knight to represent Canadian Dominion, and this team's name is "The Paladins" below will list the players of this year's CD Lacrosse team.

The Kriegiersien Lacrosse Nationalteam

After getting fourth at the last WLC and the men winning silver at the last Olympics (losing to Banija in the finals 4-6) a medal is the goal in this WLC.
The team is the same except for Alyx Dunlap, the women's Olympic team Top Scorer.

The team consisted at first out of many Xvarts, locals from the recently conquered stolen lands, that have become very proficient in the sport. After a short dominance, other races and cultures found their way into the sport, who got a better funding over the years.
The team is now a good mix of Xvarts, Zombie Players, Orcs and Humans.

Previously controlled by the Universities Athletics Coalition, the sport is now governed by the Baker Park Lacrosse Association (BPLA).
BPLA Chairwoman Dawn Thornton was elected to the Presidency of the World Lacrosse Council following WLC 40.
Baker Park first entered a team in the 29th World Lacrosse Championship, co-hosted in Razenthuria & Banija; the all-female squad made up of college-aged players advanced from pool play to the knockout round.
The nation has hosted the 31st and 37th editions of the WLC, as well as the 2nd Atlantian Oceania Lacrosse Classic, prior to WLC 34.
While the sport in BP was traditionally a female pursuit, males participated in intramural or recreational level competition; with the expansion of game into official intercollegiate recognition, the National Team have adopted an all gender policy which has seen expansion of the player pool.

All Time Record--88 wins, 44 losses (69-30 in WLC)
Nickname--a recent revival has brought the identification of many of the nation's sporting teams as "Elks" back into modern usage; the Elk (Wapiti) is the national animal of the Commonwealth.
Style Modifier--+1.3

Head Coach: Shannon Fries (11 wins, 4 defeats)
Asst Coaches: Megan Ostrander, Ted Yount, Victoria Grimshaw.

Shannon Fries returns to lead the National Team for the third time in the WLC. Currently the Head Coach at Osheana A&T University, the University of Endborough graduate and 3 year letterwinner for Brittany Franklin had been the top NT assistant in the four previous WLC squads prior to taking over the top job.

Cordian National Lacrosse Team

NORTH STARS
Home, away, and alternate, respectively.
ImageImageImage

All home games will be played in Jutland City Stadium, capacity 45,000 and host of the CIFA's Jutland FC, one of the bigger Cordian clubs, but one that's fallen on hard times. Expect solid attendance - at least 3/4ths full, more against top sides.

Coach: Nils Skoglund (39)
Skoglund just recently retired from professional lacrosse and is well-respected by the team for participating in many of the drills he creates.

Assistant Coach: Elise Groven (44)
Groven runs the offensive side of the team, having formerly played in the Cordian league. She runs a fast, constantly moving offense, which involves a lot of “cross-and-drops” around the outside of the offensive zone. A team defending this offense must have great communication, or else they’ll find themselves leaving players open all over the place.

Assistant Coach: Aleksander Ekern (42)
Ekern runs the defense. As it goes up against Groven’s offense in practice, the defense communicates very well and a screw-up in coverage is rare. The defensive squad is aggressive, especially in the “slot” in front of the net where most goals are scored.

Goaltender Coach: Isak Solum (57)
Solum was a goaltender in the league a while ago, and his job is really just to work with the goaltenders on various aspects of their game that are currently weak.

Starters in bold.

The Jovannic Returns - Roster for World Lacrosse Championships 41

This will be the third World Lacrosse Championship our great country shall be attending. As most of the same players will return to compete this year, we will take a trip back to previous editions we have attended, and see how they have performed.

Our debut appearance was in Edition 34, which turned out to be a rather poor debut, winning just 1 of 6 games, namely a 13-10 against Tikariot.

Our next appearance was in Edition 38, which turned out to be a rather amusing run by The Jovannic. It started off well, as we swept past Isle Noire 21-12. Unfortunately, the following games would spell a rather frustrating run. with a 9-10 defeat to Nyowani Kitara, a 13-10 loss to fourth seed Baker Park, a 9-8 loss to Sylestone and a 9-9 draw against Praxedes which would devolve to a 9-10 OT loss. This precarious situation was made worse following another unconvincing 4-7 defeat to Kohnhead, which led to The Jovannic needing to defeat Murderbum and hoping that Praxedes would lose to Kohnhead to leapfrog both and qualify for the Round of 20. They did exactly that. In dramatic fashion, they scrapped past Murderbum 14-13, while Praxedes failed to put forth a challenge to the surging Kohnhead team and lost 17-4. As such, The Jovannic qualified with 7 points, occupying the last playoff berth. In the Round of 20, we stunned Qasden 9-5, before finally falling for good against eventual champions Sarzonia in the Round of 16 with a score of 8-5.

Coaches
Head coach: Usti Guinrti, 64
Veteran Coach, played basketball and transfered to coach lacrosse teams for 23 years. Good sense and flexible.
Assistant coach: Ner Cheun, 38
Graduated from SportJovannic Training centre, Ner coached a 3rd division football club for 3 years before moving to Lacrosse where his aggressive style has been blooming.
Trainer: Josh Ng, 47
Retired Lacrosse Player, known for his persistent training methods and motivational speeches.

Team Notes:
- Team is neutral in focus, both offensively and defensively, but a high modifier is used due to the scoring ability of the the attack.
- Team is not looking to be excessively physical, and will shy away from any cheap actions. Physical play is kept within the rules. However, if others get cheap will us, they will respond accordingly. They are not afraid to throw punches (or receive them) from male players, but will only do so in response to an opponent's actions, they do not instigate it. Instigating something with Proctor is not advised unless your player is exceptionally good at fighting.

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF ABANHFLEFT
NATIONAL LACROSSE TEAM

This will be Abanhfleft's eighteenth time participating in the World Lacrosse Championship. Seventeen times Abanhfleft has taken part in the WLC, and in six of those times they have emerged as champions. For reasons that can be simply summed up as "it's the best thing we've done in a while," the Democratic Republic sent forth their women's national lacrosse team for their first seven appearances in the competition. The women's team, led by the "Fearsome Threesome" of Menan Alrisheb, Fatima Alsambis, and Cecilia Cuvimi, managed to win third place in their first ever tournament WLC XIX, beating the Serbian Empire to nab the bronze from under the veteran nation's noses. They went on to win back-to-back titles in WLC 22 and WLC 23 before a miserable performance in WLC 24 saw them eliminated in the group stage, but they have come back to win it all once again in WLC 25 to set history as the first nation to win three titles in four attempts. It was then decided that it was time to switch things up, and so for the first time in WLC history, Abanhfleft sent forth a mixed team of men and women to play international lacrosse in WLC 30. And they came close, but were still unable to snag the ultimate prize, losing to the eventual winners Wrexwic in the final. Eventually, finally, Abanhfleft did pick up another title on home soil in WLC 32; unfortunately they were unable to defend it in WLC 33, and were only able to collect the bronze in Jeckland. Victory was achieved yet again in WLC 35, and the objective of becoming a six-time lacrosse champion was achieved immediately afterwards, in WLC 36. Abanhfleft couldn't stop Sarzonia from picking up title number six in Baker Park, and then the repercussions of the Ripperidone scandal affected the team during WLC 38, forcing them out at an earlier time than usual. The team came close to bowing out of the group stage in Cassadaigua, but a late surge saw the Amazons sneak into the playoffs, only for Banija to finally get one over their eternal lacrosse rivals in the semifinals. Now Abanhfleft heads right back into the lion's den with a new coach and new team captain to attempt to put an end to Sarzonia's resurgent dominance.

The history of lacrosse in Abanhfleft is both long and short, in that it has been in the country for a long time, but a concise summary of said history can be written down in just ten to fifteen sentences or maybe more. Lacross was introduced in Abanhfleft by vacationing Canadian college students and expatriates who missed playing the game. The first truly Fleftic lacrosse players came from association football and field hockey backgrounds, and these players played in seasonal lacrosse clubs to augment their salaries during their respective sports' offseasons. The first national lacrosse league in Abanhfleft was established in 1929, and was composed of 7 teams coming from the Capital Islands. The Fleftic national lacrosse league system adopted its current franchise format in 2001, with the National League (now called the Lacrosse League of Abanhfleft) separating itself from the pyramid and becoming an independent organization of its own right. The Fleftic Lacrosse Federation (Samahang Lakros ng Abanhfleft or SLA) was established in 1930 to manage the leagues, and to see to the creation of a national team. The Abanhfleft men's national lacrosse team played its first game in 1931, where they lost 1-0 to a team of Montreal college players.

1963 saw the first attempts to introduce women's lacrosse into Abanhfleft. Women's lacrosse had vastly different rules from men's lacrosse, and while these programs saw some success in the mid-sixties, Fleftic women decided that the rules of women's lacrosse were "too soft," and simply adopted the rules of men's lacrosse. When the women's national lacrosse team played its first games in 1969, they surprised many other teams with their extremely aggressive style of play, the likes of which were more usually seen in men's lacrosse games. This led to many incidents of broken legs, broken arms, broken ribs, broken jaws, and so on and so forth. Eventually, the SLA established another women's team, this one focusing on women's lacrosse rules. Teams playing Abanhfleft are well-advised to treat the women like men because the girls will certainly treat their opponents like Fleftic men.

They have won six World Lacrosse Championships, winning in WLC 22, 23, 25, 32, 35 and 36. Starting in WLC 26, the team entered a rebuilding stage in which it maintained its ranking in the multiverse as much as possible without really challenging for the title. But in WLC 30, the SLA declared the rebuilding done, and the national team backed up this announcement with a deep playoff run that went all the way to the final, where they were unfortunately stopped by Wrexwic. Abanhfleft fell in the Round of 12 against hosts Baker Park in WLC 31, but the Amazons would come out on top of the lacrosse world once again after winning the championship on their home soil in WLC 32. Fortunes have been up and down in more recent times though; while the team crashed out of the quarterfinals in WLC 33, they were able to collect a third place finish in WLC 34. The team plowed through the tough schedule created by the Casaran format in WLC 35, proving the adage that "you can only beat the teams in front of you" true. One of those teams would be Vangaziland, a fellow serial winner in the competition, and in a final sure to go down as a classic, Abanhfleft emerged as 9-6 winners to lift their record-equaling fifth title. In WLC 36, the objective was to break the record and snatch it from Sarzonia, who were also planning to do the same. The Amazons defeated the Stars in the quarterfinals of WLC 36, and the team beat such giants as Banija and Cassadaigua to lift the World Lacrosse Championship for the sixth time. Now, the mission is simple: seven in 37.

Additional information
Nickname: The Amazons
Colors: All white with blue, orange, and green stripes on the waistline and yellow numbers in a red circle (home kit); all red with yellow letters and numbers (away kit)
Style: Abanhfleft is an attacking team. The legacy of football and hockey players dabbling in lacrosse in its early days in Abanhfleft has resulted in a playing style that emphasizes getting the ball up front for chances to score. This, however, leaves the defense a bit thin, as at least two midfielders join the attackers in forays up to the goal, leaving behind only the defenders and the keeper. The midfield makes up for this by rushing back to their positions as soon as the opponents have acquired the ball.

The Lacrosse Lamentations
with Aisling Keane

That’s yet another bronze medal in the bag, and that’s yet another Sarzonia versus Banija game in which the Stars have emerged triumphant, and the Lions are once again the bridesmaid. But seriously though, is there really any team left that can challenge the Stars of Sarzonia and stop them from absolutely dominating the World Lacrosse Championships? We tried to do it when they came back, and we failed. Now apparently it’s Banija’s turn to bash their heads against this particular brick wall. Three times they tried to stop Sarzonia, and three times Banija failed. Will this be fourth time lucky for the Lions now though? Or will yet another team barge into the picture and surprise us all? Or will the Amazons have a say in all of this? My brothers and sisters in Christ, I simply don’t know the answer, so stop looking at me for such.

And why do we even care about the outcome of the latest World Lacrosse Championships anyway? To recycle an old joke from a different sport, lacrosse is a game where twenty players run back and forth with sticks and a ball for sixty minutes, and at the end of it all, the Sarzonians win. There were fears that a period of Sarzonian dominance could bore fans, and if viewership ratings across the previous three editions of the tournament are anything to go by, those fears have indeed come to pass. Although, to be fair, those figures are only within Abanhfleft itself. Maybe things are different in the wider multiverse. Who am I to speak on behalf of the Banijan or Sarzonian people? Come to think about it, who am I even to speak on behalf of the Fleftic people as well? I’m just a random blogger from that country. I didn’t even want to be a blogger; Cousin Graham just roped me into this job and I haven’t found a plausible reason for me to quit. Then again, I’m not even sure I want to quit this job. Pays the bills and all that…

So, the World Lacrosse Championships are back, and now it’s time to play its 41st edition. Wow. Can you believe it? We are already 41 WLCs in, and it shows no signs of stopping at all even if the number of nations that made it in isn’t as high as it used to be. Then again, that’s probably to be expected. Lacrosse was, is, and always will be a fringe sport for most of the multiverse. I’m pretty sure that there are a lot of nations out there who might not even know that a sport such as lacrosse exists. It’s just the weirdos like us and Sarzonia and Banija and Cassadaigua who actually pay attention to lacrosse, and I’m pretty sure that we Flefts only like lacrosse because it’s the only sport where we’ve been an actual dominant force instead of just winning one championship here and there. Remember, there was a time when Abanhfleft was the most dominant country in lacrosse with a grand total of six titles under our belt. Yes, you all read that right: six titles. Probably the only reason why it didn’t feel like our period of dominance was that boring was because it was spread out over a good number of years instead of happening four straight in a row like what Sarzonia did.

So, what are our chances of picking up that elusive seventh world title? Well, looking at our group, it’s certainly going to be a tight one. We’re in Group 1 alongside hosts Cassadaigua, familiar foes Natanians and Nosts, and the Jovannic Empire, finally making a return to international lacrosse after a few years lost and wandering in the wilderness. To this day, it still astounds me that Cassadaigua have never won so much as a single World Lacrosse Championship. Yes, there was that one time that they made it to the final, but they lost that match against St. Saratoga. And also that time that we beat the Fillies to pick up our sixth title. But beyond that, they haven’t even come close, which is always surprising whenever I think about it. I’ve always had that impression that the Dagans are one of the powerhouses of lacrosse, one of those teams that you had to beat if you wanted to be among the top teams in lax. But then again, you can be among the top teams without having a title under your belt. And I think Cassadaigua certainly fits that particular bill.

How about Natanians and Nosts though? Oh, they’re always going to be a tough opponent no matter what. They may not look like they’ve done much in the grand scheme of things, but there has to be a reason why they’re up to 14th place in the world rankings, and it’s not just because they sat back and let other teams beat them silly. N&N are liable to be a banana peel for our Amazons if they don’t watch themselves. And let’s not forget about the Jovannic Empire. They may not be regular participants in lacrosse but they’re also probably good enough to trip our team up because that’s what usually happens when we play against a new team or a low-ranked one. Don’t try to question it too much. It’s just Abanhfleft things. We’ve managed to keep away from our reputation of bottling it in the early stages of a competition in lacrosse, but all that might mean is that we’re overdue for one such poor performance. Fingers crossed that it’s not this one though. I really think that we might have a fighting chance in this particular WLC this time around.

Now, aside from us, who looks like they actually have a shot at the title? On the one hand, we have our defending champions, and also the team that won four championships straight. Two championship wins is called back-to-back, and three straight is a three-peat, but what about four straight titles? I don’t think there’s even a word for that, but Sarzonia have most certainly done it. We (meaning the Amazons) were able to survive their onslaught for a few tournaments, but once they had made it to the final, all bets were off. Banija tried three times to beat them before, but they failed in all three attempts. However, I have a strange feeling that this Sarzonia team that’s going to Cassadaigua for the 41st WLC is going to be nothing like the championship winning teams of old. I don’t know why I feel that, especially considering that they’re literally the most dominant team that lacrosse has ever seen, but maybe that’s just me. Maybe they’ll still make us and Banija shit both of our beds when we meet on the field once again.

And what about Banija? We certainly can’t count them out of this one just yet. They didn’t get to the finals of the WLC three straight times only to be beaten by Sarzonia because everyone else let them. No, Banija got to those three finals fair and square, even if they had to beat us on the way. I’ve always said that there’s something that just doesn’t feel right about one-sided rivalries such as what we once had with Banija in lacrosse, but now it seems like the tide is finally turning with regards to their team finally having our team’s number. I mean, who knows? Maybe this year is the year that Banija finally gets one over Sarzonia as well. They’re another country that I cannot believe has not won a single WLC given how they’re so obsessed about it. Well, we probably had a hand in them always falling short of the goal, so maybe I should shut my trap before continuing down this train of thought and digging myself into a deeper hole.

Other contenders include Baker Park, Cassadaigua, and two countries that will be sure to give the Man from Markovsky an aneurysm if they were to win this tournament: HUElavia and Kriegiersien. HUElavia have already won the WLC once, beating none other than the eternal bridesmaids Banija on their way to their unprecedented triumph. Meanwhile, the closest that Kriegiersien has come to the ultimate lacrosse prize is the semifinals of WLC 40, where they were beaten by either one of Sarzonia or Banija, and then we beat them to pick up our fourth bronze medal in this tournament. You can make the argument that they’re going to come even closer this time around, but given the situation, it really is a toss-up on who’s going to win out this time around. Well, you know what? I might have to roll out yet another cliche expression to wrap up this preview: there’s no other way to find out but to let the games and the tournament play themselves out. Whoever will win will win, and all we’ll be able to do is argue on whether they deserved it or not.

Rock Paper Scissors

WLC is back, but we didn't find it the same as we left it

The Delaclava lacrosse team had a relatively successful World Lacrosse Championship in Banija, compiling a 4-2 record, including a win over tenth-ranked Cordian Isles, before narrowly losing their Round of 16 game in overtime to third-ranked Baker Park. Since then, there's been plenty of optimism that the Phoenixes could match or even exceed that performance.

Well, the good news is... Delaclava has already made it back to the Round of 16.

Sixteen is all the teams who sent in their registrations for this championship, the latter stages of which will be held in Cassadaigua. It's a sharp and sudden drop from the 40th Championship, with twenty-eight teams competing at the ruby anniversary. This phenomenon isn't unique to the sport of lacrosse. Take, for example, Delaclava's exploits in World Bowl. The 39th edition, hosted by yours truly, featured 48 competitors; when the beautiful game returned to the Land of the Phoenixes four iterations later, the field had dropped to 24.

But the ferocity in international football hasn't waned a bit, with the top teams like Delaclava, Banija, Ranoria, and Ko-oren, as well as a good handful of other regular combatants, going at it time and time again, building rich rivalries all the way. And fortunately, we'll be seeing the same here, with eleven of the top 14 teams joining this time around. Sure, it would have been nice to see some of the absent teams - like former AO rivals Qasden, or past opponents like Ranoria or Taxonomic Kingdoms. Not to mention some of the middling teams like Quebec, Sylestone, Kohnhead, or Hannasea, who are always good for a tussle. After #14 Natanians and Nosts, you have to scroll all the way down to #37 to find the next competitors - two teams who didn't even compete last time around. That leaves three teams remaining who will make their debuts in this 41st edition.

I think, on the whole, this is a good thing. Sure, it shortens the schedule a little bit, and there's plenty of joy in getting a full slate of games on the international level. But this is a championship, not a season, which is something all of the best players in this tournament are getting back home. We don't need to screw around for that long to find out who the best team is and who isn't (especially when the answers to those questions lately have been "Sarzonia" and "everyone else, especially not Baker Park wink wink"). When you have a smaller field with fewer unranked teams, you have fewer teams who might present a Cinderella story. That's fine. Is it really worth bloating the schedule so the underdogs in all walks of life can have something to feel good about?

So, now that we're in the thick of the competition, let's take a look at who we're dealing with. We start with South Jeolerina, and the ninth-ranked Yellow Boulders have something of a strange history of this tournament. Their team appeared ostensibly out of nowhere to host the 38th edition, and that presented a pretty straightforward path to the Round of 16 for them - a path that included a 13-10 group stage victory over the Phoenixes. After not competing in the 39th tournament, also in Cassadaigua, they returned to Banija and inconceivably snuck to the top of their group with a 5-1 record, before regressing to their true level with a crushing Round of 16 defeat to Kriegiersien. We still know nothing about their personnel for that competition, or this one. They are ninth-best in the world in name (well, number) only. That doesn't mean victories are guaranteed, but in the long run, it's predictable which teams will accumulate good results in the long run, and I'm comfortable saying the Phoenixes fit the bill a lot better than the Yellow Boulders.

Next, it's Ganes Ame, one of the three debutants in this competition. We know little about their playing style and you have to imagine Lachlan Morris doesn't know much more, but these are the pitfalls that present themselves and the best teams figure out how to play their best game even without all that knowledge. Going 2-0 here might not be necessary to advance, depending on what else happens, but it's certainly crucial if we are to contend for real in this tournament.

Saving the best for last (and I'm not just saying that), it's Baker Park. The fourth-ranked Parkers have been the measure of consistency, reaching the past eleven quarterfinals, and although they have only won two of those to reach a semifinal, you can't discount their ability to give any team a tough go, as they pushed eventual champions Sarzonia to overtime in Banija. This is also a somewhat fun matchup for us - this very publication, with the aid of some of the Phoenixes players, talked quite a bit of trash in the leadup to our Round of 16 game, and you could argue both teams got a positive result out of the game: Baker Park held up to the maximum pressure from a young and hungry team, while Delaclava showed that they could hang with the upper echelon of lacrosse. The Phoenixes previously defeated Baker Park in the semifinals of the third AO Lacrosse Championship, and although we've since lost that regional streak to the matchup and jumped ship to Sonnel, there appears to be enough diplomatic groundwork and goodwill that the matchups will still bring out the best in both sides.

We also want to spare some ink (well, no one uses that any more, but you get it, well maybe you don't if you're one of those zoomers I've heard about) to talk about this team. The Phoenixes have traditionally prided themselves more on an aggressive, productive attack, and superstar Grigor Padun - I'm not kidding about superstar, you can't go five minutes without seeing him in a cologne commercial these days - captains this team up front once again alongside veteran Michael Querrey and youngster Brian Vandevelde. But the squad became even more known for their defensive toughness in Banija, not the least of which was due to the studly play of goaltender David Wallin, who's developed as quite a suitable replacement for the inimitable yet controversial Paul van Karajan. Helping protect the net are Carlos Roby and Marcos Verena, although longtime mainstay Jake Lilly finally departs after a remarkable career that saw a lot of growth in the team. Other notable returning players are midfielder Patrice Vidal and defensive midfielders Paddy Rogers and Gareth Stone, while James Shack takes over as the new faceoff specialist. This team is in the sweet spot where they have a lot of players with good experience yet have started to make some adjustments that they believe will take them to a higher level.

One of the deficits of a smaller tournament is that you simply get a bigger energy with a bigger field. But I'm plenty excited for where this team is now and the challenges that lie ahead. And I say this not only to our diehard fans, but also to the skeptics who see lacrosse as a fringe sport - or as you might say in zoomer parlance, "not a sport" - you won't want to miss this.

Sarzonia Stars
If you RP first, you may/may not do the following:
You may choose my goalscorers/goalscoring events
Everything else (Godmoding/injuries/ejections, suspensions, violence/pandemics) is a no-go

Style: 0 (balanced between attack-minded and defensive)
Home grounds: Franz Braddock Stadium in Woodstock, capacity 35,000.
Please note: This team is renowned for its fair play. If you attack first, it will retaliate, but it will not initiate a fight.

Manager Jordan Helms, 48
Helms was a compromise choice as Stars manager after the Incorporated Lacrosse Federation couldn't come to terms with any of their prospective choices. Helms agreed to retain former manager Carter Whitlock's coaching staff and roster, saying he wanted to give the team a chance to become "[his] guys."

Defensive Coordinator: Makeeyah Brantley (43 years old)
Brantley is stepping in as defensive coordinator after the Stars fired longtime defensive boss Bill Harbour following his intemperate comments about Cassadaigua's national team. She served as a defensive coordinator at the collegiate and pro levels for eight years.
Offensive Coordinator: Tyler Pawlenty (51 years old)
Pawlenty helped mold offenses in college, in particular Rypien State College during a four-year period when that school won three collegiate national titles. His teams emphasise possession and patience, often including multiple passes before taking the perfect shot.
Assistant Coach: George Tomlin (35 years old)
Tomlin recently retired as a faceoff specialist after a collegiate career that saw him win 78 percent of his faceoffs. During his professional career in Sarzonia, he won 69 percent of his faceoffs. He can coach multiple styles of faceoffs, taking into account multiple fogos.
Assistant Coach: Bradley Morse (55 years old)
Serves as goalie coach. He helped several Sarzonian World Lacrosse Championship winning teams with goalies in an informal capacity. Now, he's coming out of retirement to provide assistance as a paid full-time coach after Whitlock convinced him to do so.

The Lacrosse Lamentations
with Aisling Keane

Not gonna lie, that was nowhere near the most exciting match of lacrosse that I’ve watched, and I’m pretty sure that most everyone else who watched the Abanhfleft-Cassadaigua match would agree with me on that. On the other hand, it was a tight contest between two titans of the sport, so it would make sense that there was very little that ended up separating these two equally matched sides. But despite that, it’s actually only the second-lowest total score in a match in matchday one of WLC 41, as Baker Park went one better than us in terms of defense and only gave up three goals to Ganes Ame. Strange nation name, that. Then again, every nation name probably appears strange to those who don’t speak the same language.

I think we might be witnessing the start of a new strike partnership here. Sure, it might not last as long as the Fearsome Threesome did given the ages of the players involved in that partnership, but we really should be able to take advantage of the partnership between Dennis Koizumi and Vanessa Kim while they’re still playing for us. Both of them are credible goalscoring threats in their own right, but when you put them together on the same pitch like Armand Silverado has done here, well, the results (or result, we’ve only played just one game yet) speak for themselves. The two of them were responsible for two-thirds of Abanhfleft’s goals against the Fillies in this game, Koizumi netting four goals and Kim with two goals to her name, and it’s all to do with their ability to grab the attention of the defense and keep them occupied. You can only imagine how terrifying these two are going to be against defenses that are not as organized or disciplined like Cassadaigua’s.

Speaking of defenses, our Amazons’ own defense held their own against the Fillies. The host side really did their best to breach them, but our ladies (and gentleman; let’s not forget about Carlos Silva here) held their ground. They kept the Dagans to only four goals in this game, for crying out loud! Four goals! That pretty much averages to a single goal per quarter! Granted, that’s not what actually happened, as Christina Phillips and Gabby Kempster scored one goal each in the first quarter and made it look like this was going to be an exciting match where both sides would match their opponent blow for blow. But like I said, our defense got their act together and closed up shop for much of the rest of the game. They’re not perfect though, but then again, no one is. But my point in saying that is the fact that Cassadaigua, though they were pretty much pegged back for the vast majority of this game, still found a way to score a literal handful of goals. Becca Landover netted in the second quarter and Kempster breached our defenses for a second time in the fourth quarter, but aside from those four goals, the Amazons’ defense was an untouchable fortress. Hopefully that puts us in a good position against the likes of Natanians and Nosts and the Jovannic Empire.

Now, remember that thing I said earlier about it looking like that Sarzonia might be there for the taking? Well, forget about it completely because I think they’re still on the ball. Sure, it might look like they’ve only barely survived the challenge from the Canadian Dominion, but don’t let such small things such as the scoreline fool you. Sarzonia are still in the title fight, and the likes of Abanhfleft and Banija are going to have their hands full once again with regards to dealing with the Stars. Are Sarzonia going to dominate the competition for a fifth consecutive time? Maybe not, if the game against the Canadian Dominion is anything to go by, but then again, this is only the first matchday of the WLC. If I read the schedule correctly, there are five matchdays left to go. A lot of things can change in five matchdays. Anyone who’s a fan of any of Abanhflef’s national teams can tell you that much.

Rock Paper Scissors

To be the second-best, you gotta beat the second-best

Perfect is the enemy of good, and through one game, Delaclava lacrosse has been good enough.

In a condensed competition of just 16 teams - the size of the knockouts last time around - the first hurdle for all competitors is to make the top two of their group, and what better way to start than to play the purported (if by nothing else, then by rankings) second-best team in the group? That was what the Phoenixes had in front of them as the twelfth-ranked squad took on ninth-ranked South Jeolerina. The ninth-ranked Yellow Boulders are so nondescript that we're going to refer to them from here on out as the Boulders, and frankly, I can't even guarantee we're going to keep that part of the name during this season's coverage.

For all the lack of information, we knew that the Boulders were largely defense-oriented (well, maybe not so that time they lost 20-5 to Kriegiersien), and so Lachlan Norris, a brilliant tactician, was going to need a strategy to dismantle them in that area. The one thing Norris thought he could rely on, that you can typically rely on from any group of Delaclav athletes, is raw foot speed. Norris' strategy was to allow the Boulders to control offensive possession and wait for opportunities to quickly counter after a save or turnover. It's risky, it's a bit of rope-a-dope, and it literally puts the ball in the opponents' hands. It worked on the defensive end because nothing the Boulders brought to the attack was particularly inventive, and for all the time they'd take on the shot clock, they were hard-pressed to come up with a quality chance on goal. And the Phoenixes cashed in with the speed advantage Norris relied on. Grigor Padun is the much-heralded player of this team, but Brian Vandevelde and backup Otis Keller are the ones that can really fly. That meant that veteran Michael Querrey took a bit of a backseat, but it paid off nicely as the Phoenixes built a 5-2 lead after one period.

To their credit, the Boulders adjusted nicely in the second quarter, managing to turn the tide so that they could be back on defense sooner and force the Phoenixes to take quick offensive chances or work through the defense in the possession game. But while it limited their damages to just a goal, they played extremely conservatively on offense to avoid getting stung on the back end (is there a better way to say that?) and put up zero goals of their own. So it was still Delaclava with a 6-2 lead heading into the orange slice break (no longer just for six-year-old soccer players!).

The second half was more even in terms of possession and quality, largely because the fresh legs of the Phoenixes were long gone. Understandable given the tactic as well as the adrenaline of championship lacrosse. I have no concerns about their fitness, just a bold way to budget the energy. But the more balanced attack really allowed the Phoenixes to explore some of its offensive rotations, as well as show off some of the skills of Padun. This was a big game for Delaclav lacrosse, the first preliminary game to be televised in primetime on DSGN, and Padun got himself a diving goal in the third period that likely will sneak into the low end of the Top 10. Padun and Vandevelde would accrue four goals each to lead all scorers, with Keller adding two and David Gaborov adding one. The biggest lead the Phoenixes would build was 9-4 towards the end of the third quarter, with the Boulders - nope, I'm done - the other team clawing back a few quick ones to get back to 10-8 with six minutes left in the games, but at that point, it was just too much time for the Phoenixes to run down, and it was all smooth sailing home after Vandevelde put a cap on the scoring a few minutes later.

In sum, I'm not sure if we learned a ton from this game, although getting the jump on finishing top two in the group is incredibly valuable. The team showed great tactical variety and execution in taking down a solid team. A few problem spots I'd point out:

The defense was never particularly challenged by a relatively basic opposing offense, and momentum swings happen, but eight goals conceded in a game like that is actually a little mediocre, and it doesn't bode well for the games with better quality attacks.

It took a lot of strategic creativity to get the win, and while this isn't a knock on Norris on putting together a gameplan, you have to think the Phoenixes showed a lot of their cards quite early, rather than if they beat South Jeolerina with a more one-dimensional approach and left something off the film that Baker Park can watch.

And Delaclava can't simply outrun every team in the competition. There are high-level athletes with a greater skill set that are going to tear down a strategy like that, and what does that leave?

But as I led with, perfect is the enemy of good, and the Phoenixes looked damn good today and got a crucial win on primetime television. Doesn't get much better than that on Day 1.

Determination at the heart of Banija's WLC campaign as the double Olympic champions earn a blowout victory to kickoff off WLC 41

CORDIAN ISLES- The World Lacrosse Championships have a history of tournament participation going up and down. One of the world's smaller tournaments, it still brings elite and fierce competition every time this tournament comes around. It still brings the full range of emotions, even if not as many people feel them- the joy, the pain, the everything, etc... of competing in a major international tournament. And this year, returning to Cassadaigua(amidst controversy over the North Cassadaigua crisis), we've got some change- and yet, the same that keeps bringing us back year after year. Banija's got a new head coach, as Allen Budaye, beat down by three consecutive losses in the WLC Final, finally said "screw it" and retired at 70, after losing in the Final on home soil. '

"In Banija... There's plenty of talent. There's plenty of skill. We have, despite the pains of our failures over the years, a firm belief in our camp that we have the best team in the world." Said Head Coach Owole Kalali. "It's not showboating or anything to say that- there's only one team that's beaten us the past few tournaments, and if you polled the coaches at this tournament, half of them would say the same about their own teams. Everybody's here with one goal in mind- to snatch that trophy from Sarzonia, and everybody wants to be the team to drive the final stake into the heart of the greatest dynasty this sport has ever known. And it's my job to prepare us for that moment.'

Kalali, of course, was the men's team coach at the Olympics, where both the mens' and women's teams won the demonstration non-medal tournaments for lacrosse. And now, with the combined team once again ready for the WLCs, the Banijans are ready to get after it. They opened the tournament against a talented Cordian Isles side, on the road, and yet, the Banijans took them to the cleaners. Up 4-0 after the first quarter, and more shockingly, we were up 13-1 at halftime, ensuring with the dominant second quarter that the game was functionally over before it had even begun.

"We came firing out of the gates- this team is hungry, this team is motivated." Kalali told reporters. "There are those out there, who say that the final losses over the past few years have beaten down our spirit, have killed our hope. And to that? I say no way. This team remains hungrier than ever. There are those out there who say that this has killed our belief that we can actually do it, that we can beat Sarzonia. Remember, while this Sarzonian team is the best dynasty this sport has ever seen, we all start at the same stage. Group play, gotta focus on your opponents, and you take each game as they come."

And the Banijans did that against the Cordian Isles. The midfield, in particular, was dominant, as the home team's possesions simply could not amount to anything at all. It makes for an exciting matchup on Matchday 2- as the Banijans will travel to 5th ranked HUElavia, for a top 5 group stage matchup. Famously, in WLC 34, an unranked, first-time entrant HUElavia beat Banija in the title game, for one of the most shocking championship runs we've ever seen, in any international sport- in any sport. We haven't lost to them since then, but of course, It's HUElavia who sit there with a world title, as they have one compared to our none.

"I'm not worried about the history or anything." Said Banija's new coach. "I know it. But here's what I know- tactics. We're studying film, we're going to come up with a solid strategy to take down this strong team. They've got excellent fans and a very talented squad, and of course, they've got a world title. But we're gonna be ready for anything they throw at us, and we're going to walk into their house with strength and confidence, and do all we can do- get win #2."

Fillies lethargic in opener,
by Caitlyn Dufresne, Concord Heights Times

Things were not pretty for the Fillies in the opening game of their World Lacrosse Championships 41 qualify campaign, being routinely handled by Abanhfleft by the score of 9-4. It may have been a tough opening contest for the team, and if they beat the teams they should be in the group, they should still be able to make the playoffs, but the Fleftics certainly showed that they are an elite team, and we are second tier.

Defensively, the team played pretty well. Holding an offense that Abanhfleft possesses to just nine goals is a pretty good accomplishment. The nine goals that they scored matched Baker Park for the lowest score by a team that won on matchday one. There’s a reason for that, and part of that is some good goalkeeping by Brittany DiNovo, but I thought the defense did a great job taking away prime shooting angles for the Fleftics for most of the game. Abanhfleft is a good team, and Dennis Koizumi and Vanessa Kim were able to combine for six goals between them regardless. That was all they needed, as the veteran attack of the Fillies was shut down. On the sideline, Jessica Crockett, the hall of fame attacker herself, was showing a lot of signs of frustration, probably still thinking she could be out there. Fans watching the game on TV or their computers were frustrated, waiting for the people they know are much better at scoring goals to finally doing something, especially while the defense did a good enough job to keep the team in the game until late.

It didn’t happen that way, and the team will remain on the road for their next game, which is against The Jovannic. On paper, this is a team that we should beat, and hopefully our offense can make up for what they didn’t do in the opener.
