The Tragic Prince
Woeful is the tale of the ancient lineage of the Ozarim, mighty conquerors of yore, now consigned to ruin and oblivion as the world has passed them by. Woeful too is the tale of the last solitary scion of that noble bloodline, Aleish of Velshamir, the wandering Vantyr. Bereft of his kin from his tender youth, he was forced to fight tooth and nail just to avoid the same grim fate that had befallen his father, his mother and his elder siblings. In this regard he succeeded, but at what cost? Cast out to sea in a derelict barge, swept by a storm far from safe haven, through some miracle he survived, only to find himself on a silent beach, alone, somewhere in the dark.

Denied his noble destiny, the young Vantyr began to wander without aim. Fate afforded him some measure of mercy, for his skill with the blade was considerable owing to the training he received under his elders, allowing him to protect himself, to earn coin when necessary... and to feed. Many a regrettable mistake was made before the cursed spawn learned to control that ancient dark hunger, to settle for the essence of the critters of the woods and not thirst for the blood of more intelligent creatures. Struggling against the Curse of Depredation is no easy feat, and many Vantyrae failed in their struggles, eventually giving in to the whispers and going on a visceral rampage of blood and sorrow. For this they were often slaughtered like the beasts they had become, or forced into hiding to avoid the wrath of the uncursed. Condemned to oblivion, one way or the other. But this fate, too, the lost scion managed to avoid.

Instead, he became a traveler, braving the depths and heights of the Promised Isles in search of the power to enact justice for the crimes committed against his bloodline. At first he hoped to achieve this by himself, to defeat some grand beast whose essence would afford him just such power, or to attain enlightenment in the depths of the world like the ancient shepherds of the isles had. But he soon realized the futility of these endeavors - consuming the soul of the Dread Abysscoppe, which possessed the gift to shift objects through its will alone, nearly cost him his life for what little power it afforded, and the many harvests he spent in the underworld seemed only to tax his sanity, rather than offer new wisdom. Thus he returned to the world of the surface, becoming a mercenary, a sellsword. Perhaps a different kind of power would help him, he reasoned. Coin. Greed. No less mighty than the sword they were.

For a little over two decades the wandering Vantyr has worked for other men, lesser men, in order to gather the resources he needed to enact his quest for justice, and while some may believe that he has lost sight of the noble goal that once spurred him forward, Aleish continues to bide his time, waiting, preparing. Now a new contract has reached him, a quest that will lead him to the depths of the underworld, an adventure to retrieve an artifact not unlike his past self: sorrowful, lost and alone... somewhere in the dark.

Having finally gotten that done... I'll try to look over pending pieces and create a small archive in one of the reserved posts later tonight. Looking forward to those pending characters!

The Forgotten Fugitive

Image
Ællard Thyrnson

Far beyond the grandiose palaces of Queen Valdis the Thrice-Blessed or the ornate academies of Cyrna stands a solemn log cabin, covered in a thick blanket of snow. The structure couldn't have been much bigger than a large shed, and offered no outside decorations whatsoever, merely a lone door surrounded by sturdy logs. Within those four lonely walls, four rugged, unwashed men found refuge. Refuge from the law, refuge from the state, refuge from whatever would force them back into those cold, dead tunnels. They had made a vow to track down and kill their former employer, a ruthless and cruel landowner who treated his indentured servants like slaves, letting them perish like flies somewhere in the dark, tight pathways that made up one of the many colossal copper mines in his commercial empire. Among the soot-stained sods sat Ællard Thyrnson, an outlaw who had, in the twenty-seven harvests he'd witnessed, experienced a fairly interesting life.

Born as a fur trapper's son in a sleepy frontier village in the Vilden-infested woods of northern Tregal, despite Ællard's simple appearance and common background, his birth was all but ordinary; the lad was born beneath the fiery northern lights, which is of significant symbolic importance in his homeland, as many Madren believe that the northern lights inspire more strength in the sons and daughters of the North, aiding them in their sporadic struggles with the Vilden. The village's seer regarded this as a mark from the gods, and before Ællard had even set his first steps, it had been decided that he'd be raised in the light of Sigrun. The religious significance of his birth didn't pass Ællard by, and the lad learnt to sacrifice frequently and bountifully, strictly binding himself to his religion and enrolling in a marshal. He chipped off a large part of flesh from his upper right ear as a form of autosacrifice, leaving a permanent chunk in what was once a perfectly round ear, and he wears many tribal tattoos all over his body, including on his chest, arms, legs and the back of his head. These attributes are believed to protect and strengthen the mind and soul from and against evil spirits, but also to grant its wearer fortune. Ællard grew up illiterate, but was taught how to track footprints, hunt, skin and prepare wild animals, repair clothing, set up shelter, sharpen his knife, navigate through forests, navigate by the stars, as well as a tonne other crafts pertaining to frontiersmanship.

Most importantly of all, the boy kept to his Madren roots, and extensively practised archery using a homemade oaken longbow, which he dubbed Lönne. He also made his own arrows, doing so with the village seer. By fletching his arrows with feathers from animals who were slaughtered on religious holidays, and by getting his arrowtips blessed by the godess of the hunt and the god of war, the boy expected to hit his mark more often now that the gods guided his shots. Due to his religious upbringing, Ællard strongly believes in the effectiveness of these measures, and still repeats these rituals now. Determined to enter his father's craft, Thyrnson lived a fairly serene yet unsophisticated way of life, hunting game and living on the solemn frontier. This changed when a great-big beast attacked his village, and slaughtered most of the inhabitants. The creature, whose bloodlust was unlike any wolf or bear Ællard had ever shot an arrow at, shocked the boy so severely that he and his father could do little more than run. They managed to get away with some of their possessions, including the boy's prized bow, a small bronze amulet featuring the runes of Sigrun and dried deer meat, which was supposed to act as provisions for their flight. Before leaving the village, Ællad witnessed the beast devour his loving mother. His father lost his right hand. The two then ran, ending up somewhere in the dark woods, navigating southward and trekking their way to the southeastern shores.

Once there, they would enter several Madren strongholds, villages and cities, pleading to local lords, landowners and merchants for work. Out of pure desperation, Thyrn sold his only son to a rich landowner named Îrrei Congsvall, a mining magnate who owned a number of ventures along the coast. Ællard, who was now an indentured servant to a man who treated his workers like cattle, found it difficult to preserve his morale in those mines. He had witnessed a slaughter before, but found the way men died in 'the pits', as he deemed it, even more insidious, as their deaths weren't motivated by a beast's hunger, or even its primal instinct, but merely by a push for profits. Their coffins consisted of the rocks they had been buried under, the choirs that sang them song as they went were the picks hammering against those stone cold walls, their lights faded as the faint, disgusting industrial lights remained. So it was, somewhere in the dark, dark mines.

After several excessively strict punishments were levied out against a number of insubordinate workers, most of whom died either directly because of the whippings or because of the wounds that such measures brought with them, Ællard co-organised an insurrection against Congsvall, in which he managed to set free many, though not all, indentured servants. He fled back north, taking up residence at an abandoned cabin far from the eye of the law.

Just as the four Madren chew down their soggy spuds, the door bursts open, and two men enter. Ællard recognized both of them immediately: Yört, his best mate from the mining days had gotten his hands on Congsvall, and had returned him to the cabin so the group could exact their revenge on him. However, instead of killing the fat-cat, the group started to fracture. Some were in favour of killing him, some wanted to ransom him, and some believed that the law would find them sooner rather than later, and that it would be best if they simply gave them up, as that would most probably decrease their time in prison. The men argued and argued, and it didn't take long before shouts were exchanged, and then it didn't take long until punches flew and weapons were drawn. At the very end, when but two of the five men remained, Ællard stabbed Yört in a frenzy, thirsty for revenge and blood, spurred on by the hunger in his stomach and the pumping hot blood in his otherwise cold body. Thus, Congsvall and Ællard stood opposite each other, in a pool of corpses and blood. In an unsuccesful attempt to flee, the magnate caught an arrow to the back of his leg, which has seriously compromised his mobility. Shocked by the things he saw beneath the earth, he could do no more than to give Congsvall the treatment he deserved, granting the man a slow, agonizing death, as the landowner had done to many of his employees.

Not wanting to stay in some snowed-up log house, Ællard will now attempt to flee from the isle and evade the king’s so-called ‘justice’. As so many penniless fugitives and broken brigands do, he spent his day in a few cheap taverns, before finally ending up in a major port city in the south of Tregal. Counting his last pence, Ællard wondered how he could rake in enough money to make it through the day. Hoping he’d rake in more money as a crippled beggar than an able-bodied one, he tied his foot to his thigh, but just before decisively tying down the knot, he heard the tales of great riches for the men and women who would explore unknown lands in search of a mystical sword. Knowing that remaining on his home isle would be dangerous regardless, and morally troubled with the idea of impersonating a cripple for a living, Thyrnson unbound his foot and signed up immediately.

The Last Watcher

When the word watcher is spoken, it is always considered to be talking about a local lookout or guard or some profession or person that deals with watching people. The title watcher used to mean something else a long time ago in the forgotten past. It being a title that belonged to a forgotten order that worshiped a forgotten god that many have forgotten about. Only the clan Kvaselis still remember the order and the god Voi, but even then, most of their past and history has been lost. Still, they carry out their ancient duty set forth by Voi and act as his watchers. Using unique soul based magic and watching the world and dealing with threats to the natural order and dealing with the presence of lingering souls. The Watchers used to be powerful and many but, history turned against them as more and more people turned their backs to Voi and the Watchers. No one knows why this happened. Only it served to weaken the order, and now only those of clan Kvaselis are left to run the Watchers. Barely content to being a shell of what they used to be.

This is where the story of Aivaras Kvaselis starts as was the custom when he was of age. He was indicted in the Watchers and was taught the ways and magic of the Watchers. Despite the Watchers being a shell of what they used to be and how many have forgotten about them. This did not shake him, and he was committed to the duties of the Watchers and their holy mission. This was the way of things for a while and Aivaras wandered the island of the Abyssal Chain on his sacred mission.

Until two years ago when a meeting was called in the order and Milad was recalled home. There all of the Watchers gathered to discuss a troubling development, but before that could be discussed. Cries of fear and screams of pain erupted from the clan's nearby home. The Watchers drew their weapons and went to investigate, and when they were about to leave their quarters. Monsters stormed their quarters, and a battle of life and death was started. Though the Watchers fought valiantly, there were too many and soon. Watcher after Watcher began to fall one by one. Aivaras wounded and bleeding, was spared this fate by his father, who managed to used an ancient spell to conceal him and as he tried to get up. An explosion rocked the room and sent Aivaras to the wall and knocking him unconscious.

When Aivaras woke up, it did not take long for him to see who had won the battle. All Watchers but him were dead, including his parents, who died fighting alongside even other. Clueless of what to do and then a sudden breath from one of the bodies, a Watcher still lived, it seemed. Aivaras went over to the Watcher, and as she lay dying. She imparted the knowledge of who was most liking behind this and the topic of the meeting. A traitor within their ranks and was consorting with a dark power. Egle was the name given, someone Aivaras knew, and could almost not believe that she would turn traitor. The last thing the Watcher said before dying was that she was heading to a place called the Aviran Rift before finally breathing her last breath. Aivaras quickly started searching the Watchers' ground and the clan home for any survivors and found none. Every one of the Watchers and of the clan was dead. None were spared, and as Aivaras dropped to his knees and cried. Then a wave of deep anger stirred in him and with a defiant cry. He swore that the Watchers and his clan would be avenged.

Gathering what supplies he could, Aivaras started to his journey to find this Aviran Rift. He does not know what he will find or how to find this place. Only that somewhere in the dark Egle was consorting with a dark power and whatever plan they may have. He will stop it and have his revenge as the last Watcher.

The Custodian

Not all kingdoms of the Madren were so invested in warfare. One such Queen Baetha of the kingdom of Amalur, a smaller kingdom than many located on the Island of Tregal. The Queen herself however was noble, kind, fair and beloved by her people. The most notable thing about her was her eccentrics. She had an affinity for beauty such that her castle was open to those wishing to see unique art and statues, and the most unique aspect: Her personal guard.

Queen Baeta would hardly settle for simple castle guards. Much too boorish and unrefined, instead, she adopted as many orphan children as she could find, gave them her last name, and had them trained in many arts, such as Language, combat, basic sorcery, all with the best she could afford. The sorcery was strangely mundane, allowing them to perform basic tasks like setting torches alight or snuffing them out, heating or cooling food, and cleaning minor messes. The most notable form of magic was their ability to summon simple, ethereal tools. Primarily to help them in their duties, but also to ensure they were even more capable of defending themselves.

A child by the name of Sveta Baeta was among the adopted. Abandoned somewhere in the dark an an infant, she was found by the orphanage, and then adopted by the Queen at an early age. She too was trained in the many arts at the Queen's request. Sveta found a particular fondness for an axe that she would then use as her bonded weapon.

The Custodians were a beloved sight throughout the kingdom, where they often sent words directly from the queen acting as her messengers and ambassadors, and brought with them joy and beauty, often helping the neighboring towns and villages with whatever issues they faced. Their renown was great in the small kingdom they served. However, all good things must end, and the Queen's age began to render her ill and eventually, as all eventually do, she passed. The funeral was heart wrench as every living custodian attended and ensured their beloved queen received the burial she deserved.

There was much ado about who would take her place. She had not mentioned any relatives, but shortly after they received a letter by another woman claiming to be the queen. It had every seal they expected, and no one could prove that it was fake, so they reluctantly accepted her as the new queen. Queen Amelia. It was not long before Queen Amelia disbanded the Custodians for the crime of being much too expensive to maintain. Despite their absolute loyalty to the crown, they were heartbroken, and as their final act of defiance, sealed the castle shut with her inside while taking their valuables. Some considered assassinating the queen, but as that is not what Queen Baeta would have wanted, they decided to separate and spread the ideals of Queen Baeta. Sveta made her way deeper into the Abyssal Chain, after all it was somewhere in the dark that needed light.

The first of those being a large, terrifying man with a wounded soul...

Made some small edits to the "app." Elaborated on her magic a bit more, added the location of Amalur, and cleaned up some of the wording a bit.

Well for basic stuff he'd be physically formidable even for a Spinose (i.e. lift an ox) and his swordsmanship skills would be quite proficient. For personalized abilities, he could control thorn covered vines that sprout from his wrist that he could freely manipulate and if he creates enough he could make them burst in a hail of spines.

Sounds reasonable. Aborias the thornwalker is accepted -nods-

Did you intend him to join the quest for the Blade of Amaranth?

Interesting app. Lots of tragic characters around here :P Though I'm afraid you'll have to tweak this app a bit, since you cannot make a character hailing from Irre - you can only make characters from the isles. Aside from that, it would be great if you explained what exactly you intended Aivaras to be able to do with his watcher soul magic.

With the Wendigo thing, basically Maka is effectively unable to use his Law of Howling transformation, as he would not be in control of it. His arc and his whole reason to travel the isles is to find a way to cure himself of this plague. On top of it, he will be more prone to violence due to the Wendigo's influence. Imagine Hulk and Bruce Banner where The Hulk is a more violent intrusive thought. I am not planning to make him murderhobo edgelord, but there will be moments where he has to actively restraint his own thought from being influenced.

On his normal form I expect him to be a fighter, with fighting skills and strength similar to above average Vilden warrior. I also envision him to have greater pain tolerance, so a bit of extra endurance but nothing supernatural or out of ordinary (e.g. A shot of arrow wont stop him, but only because he can ignore the pain rather than extra strong skin/muscles)

His Wendigo form I imagine to be much more powerful, with extremely heightened resistance, strength, and endurance. Again, imagine Hulk form for a Deer-man. It retains Maka's intelligence, but much more savage in desire. It hungers, and it wants to satiate itself.

The Storm Child

As lightning rakes across the sky in Cyrna, many take shelter in their respective universities. To master the arcane is no easy matter, and many put their lives on hold on order to do just that. The stress that forms from homesickness and ambition leads to reckless behaviors from many students. With people from all over the world competing and mingling and learning, it is expected for some accidents to occur. However, for a few, they do what they can to get rid of any distractions as quickly, and quietly, as possible.

Many believe this is how Nemina got her start, abandoned on a cold, unforgiving wasteland as a babe. Many left on her position were dead to rights, but be it fate or chance she somehow survived. No one could truly tell how, but stories of a toddler surviving somewhere in the dark soon circulated throughout the Isle. It was unthinkable, unexplainable even. There were some who thought her a manifestation of all the abandoned children from the past. The truth, that a crazy mute crone had kept her alive, was far more tame. However, after seeing lightning strike down a beast that tried taking the Young girl into it's jaws, others believe it was the lightning itself that protected her, spoke to her. As the tale of the storm child circulated beyond the isle, into trading ships and to other shores, such a truth soon came to pass.

She was soon taken in by a high ranking professor of the Consortium, who taught her to read, write, and follow basic mannerisms. Once civilized, and determined to no longer be likely to run, she was taught how to wield storm magic. She learned the basics as easily as breathing, commanding lightning and wind as if she had been training for decades, shaping it and molding it like dough, and cherishing it like an old friend. Still, the professor was not content with an adept storm mage. Not for one that could be as legendary, as perfect, as the rumors said she could one day become. She was a prodigy, yes, but until she was the master of masters the old professor did not rest.

Nemina spent most of her harvests like that, practicing and honing and learning, her time outside the walls of the Consortium rare, and her time with other students involving little more than paying glances. Still, she was not perfect, and the professors age was catching up to him. Some believe he abandoned her there, a failure, while others think he died in that unforgiving isle. No matter the case, she remained, and he did not.

Perfection, of course, soon became her obsession. Nemina did not know what it entailed, but she would achieve it, regardless. For the first time, she learned with the others, trying different techniques to be perfect. She tried using many artifacts to enhance her knowledge and skill. She tried everything, but nothing seemed to get her to that elusive concept. Thus, with a heavy heart, she bid adieu to the Consortium and the Isles where the winds seemed to speak to her. Perfection could not be found there. Instead, she had to look elsewhere. Somewhere where perfection was the only way to survive. Somewhere that she had to achieve the impossible, or did trying. Somewhere in the dark.

I completely misinterpreted the bit about adventurers signing up for adventures, and thought that I should give my character a motivation to pursue his own goals. Now that I look back, I see how that might sound a bit sill, haha. Edited the app so that Ællard is now with the Blade of Amaranth guys.

I consciously kept a whole lot of ambiguity about the large beast that wiped out Ællard’s village, but I was thinking about the Wendigo doing so, as that might be a really interesting narrative device later. How would you (and the OP / CO-OP) feel about that?

Looks pretty good! Like with most others I'd like you to explain what exactly you envisioned her being capable of doing, with her storm magic and all, although more importantly I'd also like to know how she uses or casts it, since it sounds like she can use quite high level magic and all.

It's pretty lightning and wind magic. She charges up lightning which takes a little bit for her attacks, strong enough to destroy trees and small shacks and the like. Nothing more than that, and it's not an instantaneous thing. Her wind magic allows her minor levitation and for her to "speak" to it, basically localizing weather purely around her and having it give her minor protection. She won't get rained on, and to stab her or sit an arrow at her you'll have to deal with strong winds around her. Other than that? Really weak tornados, not even capable of lifting a person, and the lightning has the standard capabilities of most lightning. You know, its hot and zappy. It should be noted that storm magic is literally all she can do.

Excellent piece! I'm happy to see people have been having an easy time getting into the spirit of the roleplay. My only question for you would be what do you intend to do with Aellard, since at the end of your piece he seems to be more or less doing his own thing, rather than looking to sign onto an adventure or searching for a cause. Did you intend him to join the quest for the Blade of Amaranth?

I completely misinterpreted the bit about adventurers signing up for adventures, and thought that I should give my character a motivation to pursue his own goals. Now that I look back, I see how that might sound a bit sill, haha. Edited the app so that Ællard is now with the Blade of Amaranth guys.

I consciously kept a whole lot of ambiguity about the large beast that wiped out Ællard’s village, but I was thinking about the Wendigo doing so, as that might be a really interesting narrative device later. How would you (and the OP / CO-OP) feel about that?

Oh, alright. Do you think I could've been clearer about it? That might warrant an edit or two. Regardless, with the edits the character should work just fine, so I'm just gonna go ahead and accept him. Just to clarify, though, the idea is that he heard about the collector's quest in southern Tregal, booked passage to Valaran and then traveled to Aratosh to join the expedition, correct?

As for the idea between Aellard and Maka, that's perfectly fine by me. We've no problems with players creating pre-existing connections between character. It's encouraged, even! :P

Alright, that works. Nemina is accepted.

Made the edit.

Okay, well with soul magic, Aivaras can do stuff like, see people's souls and see things like ghosts or normally unseen things or if a person is being possessed or being controlled by another being. And can perform an exorcism to release the person from foreign control. Along with tracking down a person by their soul though it requires the user to have seen see a person's soul before or came into contact with an object that the target is close with. Like a bloodhound with a smelling the precious ring of the target though it has a limit of a couple of days and is hard to easy to track depending on the number of people traveling in an area.

Also, talk limited with the dead, help ghosts move on either peacefully or by force, and use soul energy to launch attacks such as projectiles and summon shields. Stuff like that and does that sound okay?

Let's see. Ethereal projectiles and energy shields sound reasonable, as does something like, say, an exorcism to release someone from the control of an evil spirit or something of the sort. I'm a little more iffy on the seeing people's souls, would you care to clarify what that means? Depending on your answer, that and the tracking part might be fine.

For the most part I'm only uncomfortable with the whole seeing and talking to the dead thing. If the idea is that he can, at any point, drum up the soul of some deceased schmuck to interrogate them for information, then that would be a no from me. If it's just like something he can do when it's explicitly stated that there is a ghost or spirit in the area though, that's more reasonable.

Well for seeing people's souls, it is an ability that he has to turn on and off. It is not a passive ability and when he activates it his eyes glow a bright blue. So people will know when he uses it and thus, does not use the ability alot since he does not want to draw attention to himself. And he has to use this ability when he tracks down a soul. Though admittedly I might change the tracking so it lasts a day or so and it has to have recently seen a person's soul. What do you think?

As for talking to the dead, I was just thinking that only souls that have not passed on yet. So ghosts that still linger on the planet and spirits and yeah in the general area of him. He can't conjure up a ghost that is miles away. He has to go to them. That help with clearing things up?

I was more wondering what it implies to see a person's soul in narrative terms, not so much in terms of what the ability does, so info on that would be helpful. As far as the limitations of the tracking ability go, those sound fine. I imagine it just points him in the right general direction/allows him to perceive a trail, rather than allowing him to know the exact location of his quarry? If so there should be no problem with that.

So that sounds like it would more or less just limit things to victims of a curse, those who died with an extreme grudge, and the recently dead, correct? If so that should be fine. Just try to quickly run things by me if you want to have Aivaras summon a spirit and you should be golden.

EDIT: Run it by whoever is running the adventure he's currently in, I mean. If he's jumping on board the Blade of Amaranth quest, then yeah, run it by me, but the idea is that other people can run their own adventures too, so yeah :P
