Defending the title is never an easy task, and CF Outineau found out on day one after conceding a late penalty to go down to defeat in St-Richard. It’s a sensational win for Les Navigateurs. Wynleth hosted its first top-flight match in years against the illustrious Centurions, and the result was as expected as Burnaby took a controlled 2-0 win at Cathysceau.

For the second week in a row, the champions dropped points in stoppage time. Tomás Guisao escaped the defence and snatched a draw for Hamiltonian Cambria with a composed near post finish.
VOCANI STOPS THE COMBACK
Aldo Vocani’s 57th minute goal stood as the match winner after Océanic’s comeback bid at Maillardville Park was thwarted.
LEVEL UP?
Arsène de Saintyon scored with a firecracker of a finish to earn a point against Burnaby for CS St-Rémy. CSSR have an amazingly tough opening schedule, but two draws against teams whose level they want to reach is about okay for them right now.

...big win for Strathcona and they now are tied at the top with three straight wins, and you have to say against tougher opponents than Shearwater so far. So between those two, when you’ve embarrassed Océanic at home I say that’s the real tie-breaker and it’s the Internationals at the top of the league. But our next call is from a CSSR fan, the first full season for Calen Reamsey at the helm of St-Remy gets underway, three matches unbeaten now after a 1-0 win against Latrobe. Hilda is calling from Neorvins, what do you think of how your team’s doing?
“Hi Gary, yeah, while it’s not been perfect the results so far are encouraging. With the fixtures we’d got to start the season, to have one win and two draws is not terrible, and it shows we’re on that level at least. I don’t know if the performances have improved really, but what’s important is the players are shining at the right moments and that’s really important.”
Hilda, what’s made the difference this start compared to last season, what do you see that’s different?
“Well, Kaja Hekkert is finally playing like the player that was promised. That’s been key. Hekkert’s goal today was just, wow, that’s someone finding a groove. And Lio Turnau has to play more. He was excellent today. Unfortunately, that might be it for Brian Sanders, and we’ll all have great respect for what Sanders did for the club. If Turnau is the replacement sooner than we think, that was always the plan, well that’s just football and you move forward.”
Thanks so much Hilda, now moving on we’ve got Wynleth grabbing its first win of the season, and against Coquitlam too. What a big win that is. Jay is a Coquitlam fan joining us on the phone, it’s been up and down for the Easties hasn’t it?
“Yeah Gary, it’s such a mess partly because we don’t know which team’s going to show up game to game. Today was just horrid. And then you’re coming off a win against Langlois and you think, great, big high, we’ve got some real progress here, but then maybe Océanic are actually just bad. And that means we were not good either.”
Well you’re glad you’re not an Océanic fan today. Two losses in three, throw in the Challengers Cup and that’s three in a row and looking at elimination on Thursday. But talk about your own team now, which version is the reality?
“Oh, I don’t know. I hope we can make the top four this year but that’s hope, we just have to find some consistency and discipline I think. We gave away lots of sloppy fouls, when there was no need to today, free kicks in good spots, you do that against the big teams you’ll get killed. As it is Wynleth got a goal from a free kick and that was inexcusable.”
Carrie Buchanan hitting that one through the wall, yeah. Basic, basic stuff and as you said, very suspect defending from Coquitlam today. Moving on to...

“nearly got beaten to that ball but it’s out for a corner for Shearwater.”
“Very nervy from the Torbay full-back, should have cleared that easily but instead they let the visitors keep the pressure on. They’re not going to find a way back into this match if they can’t get the ball off Shearwater.
“Corner comes in and it’s Tara Kreidel!!... Shearwater have two! And the way this match has gone, she’s put this one beyond reach of Torbay you have to say! ”
“I’m shaking my head here because there’s a total miscommunication, they’ve let Kreidel in for a free header, and she’s not the tallest but the Dagan centre-back knows how to direct those headers when she does get her head to the ball, and that’s well-placed. No chance for Eiriksdóttir, Bream gets in her way and does nothing to stop Kreidel getting to it, a shambolic goal to concede.”
“And looking like no chance for Torbay either as Shearwater look on course for their fifth straight win here, a great start to the season they sees them retake top spot from Latrobe at this early stage.”

“...and it’s a horrific start to the season when you look at those defensive stats. They’re not covering ground, they’re not getting tackles in, they’re conceding on average 2.1 expected goals every match – that’s a shocking number of dangerous chances, every single time they’re out there. Only FC Novonaya has conceded more than them – and that’s the team at the bottom of the table who don’t have a single point after six matches. Steve Longhorn has been really vulnerable in goal. You look at players like Kiera Weiram who’ve carried this team, Weiram was absent today. Wang Yuan, I forgot he was on the field when he popped up and fluffed that chance, I thought he’d been subbed off... You really expected them to do something in the Champions League or at least the Challengers Cup, they bowed out really meekly. So really, it’s a case of is their season kind of done here a month and a half in?”
“We’re going now to Stade Olympique in Outineau where Kathy Eowins is out of the dressing room to with our Gina Weatherby.”
KATHY EOWINS, LANGLOIS OCÉANIC
“Kathy, it’s a big loss against a provincial rival, and it’s four losses from six matches for Océanic. What do you think has gone wrong?”
“There’s no pointing fingers here, we are in a terrible situation. I have to take responsibility, we all have to take responsibility and also pull together and find our rhythm, get back to what’s made us successful and get back to the game we know we can play.”
“CF Outineau are also the team you’re chasing, or one of the teams you’re chasing for the league title. And right now you have to say that doesn’t look very feasible this season. What do you think is the goal for the team now?”
“Obviously the fans, we know what they expect, and we’ve got to focus on delivering. You look at last season, this is still early, we can still turn things around. There’s no guarantees and we have to, like I said, look at ourselves and take responsibility and find our game again.”

No one’s going to feel sorry for Burnaby, but they got one of the most absurdly difficult group draws possible in the Champions League. And there were no matchday one miracles as defending champions Cazadores Cathair came to town and dismantled them for a 2-0 win. Meme-worthy highlight was Aloha literally strolling past an oblivious Kari Zücker before tearing through the backline for the opening goal. Up next, a trip to Valanora against six-time winners and coefficient ranking champions Raynor City United. Gulp.

All the talk of Shearwater’s seven-match winning run has been qualified by the idea that they haven’t faced a serious test yet, merely a parade of relegation candidates. Well, in normal circumstances this would have been exactly that test, but Océanic are playing and positioned like relegation candidates themselves, and were dispatched with only minor difficulty. They can’t blame Steve Longhorn for this one – and Shearwater are now on eight straight wins.
Meanwhile: Association Ariddienne’s torrid start continued with a 5-0 thrashing in Kirkenes which leaves them bottom of the table with one solitary point. It hasn’t been the greatest start either for KFC but this will be a good tonic after their own embarrassment against Saintsport last week. Eulatie Abraham scored at the wrong end after corner kick chaos saw CF Saint-Richard lose out on an own goal against CS Saint-Rémy, who stay in the IFCF conversation with that win. FC Novonaya are out of the drop zone after a 3-2 barn-barner at home to St. David, with Anne-Marie Roux getting a brace in a match between what started the weekend as the league’s two most porous defences.

“Well, it was all change for Océanic in this match and the players responded well to beat Kirkenes at home. Is this result against a top side, a confidence booster that will help them get back on track?”
“Confidence, yes, but the thing is Danny Flint sent on players who had something to prove. He’s relied too much on his core players trying to squeeze out a result the last few matches, and whatever the reasons they’re not performing, a few fresh faces always helps to remind them hey, your spot’s not safe, for some of them low on morale you send on someone who’s itching to get on the pitch and show what they’ve got. It was a good decision with the selection and that was a key point today.”
“You can tick them off, as well. Michael Sveyn first of all, young goalkeeper managed to keep his first clean sheet since arriving in Kelssek, coming in for Steve Longhorn. Puxjodaskar Lohánares looked really energetic out there and the 23-year old played a role in the first goal. Kyshoen Nagy, Wang Yuan, Dylan Patterson, Kathy Eowins, all big names who were on the bench today. Ethan Porter, Tyler Hodgson, and Lance Atkinson, all looked pretty sharp instead, and Kirkenes didn’t quite have the answers.”
“It’s a kind of high tempo play that’s typical of Océanic, but we haven’t seen in weeks from them.”

MARTIN GREGOIRE, Former Kelssek international
“Well Martin, this was another Kelssek team getting taught a lesson tonight. Is this a measure of how the quality of the KFL is just not really on par with the best of them?”
MARTIN GREGOIRE: “No doubt about it. Cazadores was a class above. A lot of the Burnaby players just looked lost out there, and you certainly don’t see that too often in domestic competition. You look at this group, on paper, this was winnable. Cazadores were really poor last season and if they hadn’t been able to show up and win this cup by the skin of their teeth last year, they wouldn’t be here at all. And they walked all over Burnaby today. So if you’re talking about the Championship being a league where that club, Cazadores, would look ordinary?... Long way from that. We are very, very far away.”
Matchweek 17
It’s been a big weekend in the KFL as Shearwater dropped points again, but it could have been worse...
“Oh and Tyler Hodgson has kept that in play! Can he squeeze that cross from the byline... O’Reilly!! Coalan O’Reilly has levelled the score for Shearwater! The Latrobe players are immediately claiming that ball went out of play but the referee is waving them away... Latrobe had this one in the bag but they’ve let it slip away!”
Latrobe missed a big chance to stick a foot into the title race, and that also let Burnaby close the gap to one point thanks to a moment of skill in the Anglian Derby.
“...right past Imke Diskin! And a great ball forward from Buené! Van Halen flicks it on... And a sublime finish from Ikra Yonte! What a touch, what a hit!!... That’s a goal deserving of the occasion and Kirkenes look shell shocked! They’ve been so solid today but they’ve been undone by a brilliant bit of play from the Centurions, and Burnaby are ahead against Kirkenes!”
And with Kirkenes on mid-table form that's going to put the pressure on manager Natalia Rossi, where have we heard that one before... Has Océanic turned a corner? The Langlois club climbs into the top half of the table with a third win in a row against an early-surging Hamiltonian Cambria, who are now staring at a downturn of their own. Was the answer Kyshoen Nagy all along? The crisis club baton passes to CF Saint-Richard, who were outclassed painfully by high-flying Strathcona, and they’ll have a suspension for Edmün Dârgâneý’s red card on top of their pile of worries too. But with only three points between 19th and 13th, there’s a lot of clubs scrambling to keep away from the abyss. Into which Ariddienne may finally fall as Neil Murphy’s goal for Torbay makes it a month without a win. All coming up on this week’s Podcast FC...”
