Background: Medical research on the metabolism of soldiers on operations has shown that during high-stress assault and recon operations appetite is often disrupted by stress. As such, soldiers seem to consume only a limited amount of calories during their regular meals. For this reason, professional recommendations are to provide troops with rations consistent with their average consumption of calories that would contain the day’s worth of nutrients, while providing also a an additional supply of high-caloric density foods to contain an ‘extra’ calory load’ which the soldiers could easily consume to make up for any calory gaps.
