I don’t want to kill you off. It would take years for me to be able to govern Japan effectively and you have basically no natural resources of any use to me that necessitate keeping Japan. There will probably be a period of Chinese occupation of Japan if I get things my way but that’s more than a decade away. The only reason I would do this anyways is to know about your time traveler, who Aaron still believes is there. When I leave I am unlikely to come back, but I might leave some interesting technology behind for you to mess with afterwards.

Also, the capital city of Yan province is the city of Ji and it is the largest iron producing city in China. Very heavily industrialized, as much as can be said for the technological level China is at right now.

The missionaries who spread these practices are mostly focused on teaching about chanting the name of Amida and how his grace saves you from rebirth and takes you to the Western Pure Land after death, although they would also bring other practices such as visualization of the Pure Land and recollection of the Buddhas. There's also a cult of martyrs from Hanajima who were killed or tortured and are worshiped as bodhisattva (people already born in the Pure Land who will assist fellow worshipers).

Hossō is a philosophical tradition which sees everything as mind-only, without real substance. It's focused on analyzing the mind, which is divided into eight consciousnesses, and how to transform them into the wisdom of the Buddhas. It tends to tie into Tantra which refers to esoteric traditions which are centered around reciting mantras and practicing visualization meditation under a guru in order to become a Buddha in this lifetime or immediately after death. Monks educated in these traditions have internalized an ethos of heroic self-effort to transform the mind and rid themselves of their personal faults to try and achieve perfection, which makes them pretty well fitted for the rigid Korean and Manchurian wilderness.
