THE PRIDE

Université St. Croix : A Factfile.

Motto: '成人材之未就 均風俗之不齊'
Established: 1643
Type: Public research university
Location: Québec City, Capitale-Nationale, Québec and Shingoryeo
Religious affiliation: Non-denominational
Endowment: Q£ 21.3 billion (2041)
Chancellor: Armand Lee-Durkheim
Vice-Chancellor: Eleonore Davenport
Academic Staff: 4,765
Students: 22,363
Undergraduates: 13,115
Postgraduates: 9,248

It has taken a decade for Université St. Croix to come back to the NSCF after a decadelong absence, and the Bleu et Blanc are looking forward to keep up their ascent after their successful return two years ago. Being located at the St. Croix district, just ten minutes metro ride away from the renowned Quartier Calanien, the hub of student life, bistros and related academic establishments, St. Croix students, the faculty, the alumni and the Capitoliens all across the Multiverse welcome the fans across the Multiverse.

In terms of collegiate athletics, the Bleu et Blanc are consistently among the most successful in most sports the athletics department sponsor team/individual participation, with their particular strengths in gridiron, Women's basketball, both association footballs, Men's volleyball and fencing teams. Among them, most fans both home and abroad know the Bleu et Blanc football team the best, for they have not only won the second most number of national championships, but have made their mark as every capitolien's true blue in college football. This year was a yet solid year for the Bleu et Blanc program, with a couple of national championships won in Women's footy and an expected deep run for both fencing championships, and football did come close where they secured themselves another top 5 finish after a NY6 bowl win even after large graduation of its players.

As for the university itself, Université St. Croix is renowned for its particular strengths in most fields, but in particular the humanities and social sciences, which has been renowned for its bred and butter. Its Faculty of Arts and Sciences, especially fuelled by all of its eighteen colleges, is funded with consistency and high rates of trust and confidence by the Quebecois Government, who do take particular interest in the university and its students. It is perhaps destined from the university's origin into the 1640s (it is 2047 in Quebec right now), with St. Croix being the nation's only university for the first 120 years of the history. In 1648, the Quebecois Government had built the Seonggyoongwan, eventally the Seonggyoongwan Faculty of Arts and Science of the University itself, with both theological and practical trainings emphasised to prepare its students and alumni into civil service. Since then, as the university was renamed St. Croix in dedication of the St. Croix plains the university campus was built upon and took upon more imperial, comprehensive identity, the Université St. Croix has stood as the pinnacle of postsecondary education in not only Quebec and Shingoryeo, but also the Quebecois Commonwealth as well.

Known affectionately as "The Horseshoe" to locals and to many across TJUN-ia, Sherwood Field combines the raucous atmosphere of a college game with the surrounding local scenery that the region is known for. The big patch of grass in front of the scoreboard is accessible to fans, allowing for a unique viewpoint for the game we all love. While it certainly isn't the biggest venue in all of TJUN-ia, not just the NSCF, its warm and close-up atmosphere can certainly make the difference come game time...

The University of Methopotamia hails from the 2014 time bubble of Buffalostan. President Romulus "Rom" Mittens was elected in 2012, unseating President Baraka HUSSEIN Odinga. Since being elected, President Mittens has stabilized the economy, helped heal bitter racial divisions, and strengthened Buffalostan's hand abroad. But while it might be morning in Buffalostan, times are still tough in Methopotamia. The economic recovery hasn't reached the Nozark Mountains, where the traditional mining and forestry industries are declining.

The University of Methopotamia is the oldest university in the region, but has never had a particularly strong handegg program. After toiling for many seasons at Division II level they won elevation to Division I-AA(HCS) but then progress stalled. Frustrated at being locked out of Division I handegg, UoM President Andrew Graham decided to take the team independent and join NSCF, following a path previously trod by Buffalostani colleges Eirikssonia University and Green Mountain State.

Visitors to the 2014 time bubble will find it not as different as the 1968 and 1999 time bubbles. The internet is a little slower and the phones a little smaller, and the people harbor some strange primitive beliefs such as a conviction that J.R.R. Rowling, author of the Song of Lukewarm Water fantasy series that's been adapted into the hit TV show Zone of Thanes is about to publish the next volume in the series annnnny day now.

Enrique Sokolov smirked as he saw a certain pony trot into the locker room. It was the first practice of the year, and everyone was curious if someone in particular would be showing up.

"Didn't have the guts to transfer, Smith?"

"Shut the fuck up." Gunsmith Smith didn't break his stride on the way to his locker, straight past the peanut gallery.

"I don't know what'd be worse, if you were too chicken to apply or if you got rejected."

"Cut it out, Ricky," Coach Arthur Masterson bellowed from the other side of the room. "You're going to be starting next to him and I'm not gonna have petty shittalk taking y'all's minds off the game. Anyway," turning back to the lad he'd been chatting with, "what were you saying?"

Neville Hornsby gave a small sigh and resisted an eyeroll with all his strength. Wouldn't do to seem... uppity, impatient, whatever to the head coach as a freshman. But this matter is rather important. "I was saying, it's—it's not okay that you put both me and him on the same team. He's been harassing me for yea—"

"Him? Hornsby Neville? I thought you two were twins, people love it when brothers play together on a team."

"WE'RE NOT—err, no, we're not related. That's what I've been trying to say. That's not even his name, four years ago it was Jack—"

"Hey now, I'm not going to have anyone deadnaming my players like that. They get to decide what they're called and that's final."

"OK, yes, that's a great policy, but this is a case where you have to look at the motives. He literally took my name in reverse. We went to the same high school and one day he just started showing up in the same outfits I liked to wear, hanging out with all my friends, and eventually the name change came. I have no idea what his problem is, and I can't fucking believe he made it into Hoofstra and made the team just to fuck with me!"

"I don't know what's gotten into you, but Hornsby earned his place on this team the same way you did, and you're both going to get your fair shots at earning playtime like everyone else. That is, if you don't go starting trouble. Am I clear?"

"Ah—I... yes, sir." Neville tensed his face to keep the look of dejection off for the moment.

"Good. Now I'll see you on the field in fifteen." Arthur spun around and bellowed to the room at large, "That's for y'all too! Chop chop, fifteen minutes 'till we get running."

Neville collapsed back onto the bench and casted a scornful glare across the mass of bodies. At least the fucker's locker is nowhere mine.

Eyes On The Prize: Governors Offer Warm Welcome To Panem University In NSCF 25 Opener

Image
Gideon Kearse put the Big 8 on notice in the NSCF 25 opener, racking up 2 sacks and a TFL

We here at RSSN won't deny that that last season was rough for the Richardson University Governors. 9-5 overall, no playoff berth. A convincing victory in the prestigious Drawk Bowl was nice, as was a victory over that school over in Banija.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand - We didn't get where we wanted to go last season. As much as a Drawk Bowl trophy is nothing to scoff at, the expectations for this team are to win a championship, and Dietrich's squad hasn't come close since letting an equally ambitious Northern Moravica drag Alton McNair down at the four yard line - a game we would argue was as close as any championship game in NSCF history.

Ever Since? NSCF 20, NSCF 21 & 22, quarterfinal loss. NSCF 23, out in the first round. NSCF 24, missed playoffs. Accordingly, we've been in a steady decline ever since being kicked out of the throne room.

So with all that in mind, it's well known that the Governors are going to have to show out to regain the international respect they once had. An expected week one victory is one small step towards that goal. At the head of that effort? None other than the vanguard of this defense - Gideon Kearse.

On the first play from scrimmage, Kearse notched a tackle for a loss on Aaron Brady, quickly throwing a wrench in the Pups' opening script and helping earn his own offense solid field position, which consequently they were able to take advantage of. For how much criticism this Richardon passing attack has gotten, Astrid Verona did her job in this one, starting a perfect 3/3 on the opening drive before handing it off to star runner Elliot Roach from seven yards out for the opening score.

Panem University's squad refused to lay down, to their credit, answering with a field goal on two straight drives, but that was as close as they got to taking the lead. Near the end of the 2nd quarter, Richardson had pushed its way to midfield on the back of Elliot Roach, but on 3rd and 5 elected to go with the pass. Freshman Angela Sauber got open on a quick slant and Verona was able to hit her in stride. Her receiver did the rest.

With a quick cut, Sauber showed off her agility and got the edge on the defense, racing to the corner of the end zone with plenty of green grass between her and the nearest defender. The crowd in Dietrich Stadium roared its approval as the freshman pass catcher went untouched on a 47 yard touchdown in her NSCF debut, a touchdown that gave her squad a touchdown of separation..even with the missed PAT. And when Panem University tried to drive down the field to get back in it, who was there but Gideon Kearse to sack Peter Wear on third down to force yet another field goal.

The second half? An absolute grinder. Richardson's OC, Eins Turner, handed the ball to his workhorse with enthusiasm, letting the big back eat away the clock and yardage. It worked, even if the Governors consistently stalled out before they were able to capitalize with a touchdown on any of those drives, and held the Pups to just four drives in the second half while the Governors settled for a pair of Shirley Woo field goals.

But that's what it came down to, with the Pups taking the ball with just two minutes left in a 19-16 game. Not that many Governors faithful showed concern. The team had accumulated four sacks and an interception already on the day, and it didn't appear that chaos would stop any time soon, with Kaspar Ulvestad hitting quarterback Peter Wear on the first play of the drive to force an incompletion. The Pups picked up a pair of first downs promptly, and hit a nine yard throw on first down to get them to 2nd and 1 on the fifty yard line. With two minutes and plenty of time, they went the safe route and ran the ball to pick up the first down.

Problem - with Kaiser Belfort at linebacker, running the ball isn't a safe route. The hard-hitting linebacker smashed the Pups runner behind the line for a small loss...And when they tried again on a pitch, well, that just gave him more distance to pick up speed. Behind the line of scrimmage, an audible crack resulted in Belfort putting Aaron Brady on his back once more. The centerpiece of the Governors defense jumped to his feet and pounded his chest above a slow-to-get-up runner, and quarterback Peter Wear knew it was up to him to pick up the first down.

It should have been an easy completion, a quick slant or hitch, but his first read was covered just long enough by freshman corner Takeuchi Ichiko, and before Wear even got to his second read, he was swallowed whole by 275 pounds of All-Ranorian defensive end.

Gideon Kearse didn't even celebrate standing somber over his prey while the rest of the defense swarmed around the man who'd just iced the game, with Kaiser Belfort in particular jumping onto his shoulders to gas up his man. He blew up the stat sheet with 8 tackles, one for a loss, 2 sacks, and a pass deflection...and the young man didn't even have it in him to celebrate. For a man like Kearse, he felt that this sort of performance should be routine.

The defense certainly starred today with the offense struggling to produce points. Astrid Verona(17/21, 209 yards, TD) may not have made any mistakes, but she did nothing to dissuade her doubters - the biggest passing play of the day was largely due to the receiver's own athleticism. As far as we can tell, this offense still runs through Elliot Roach, who cleared the century mark without any trouble. In likely his final season with the team, hopefully this is just an appetizer of the season he's looking to have...

Because we're going to need one hell of a performance out of him if Richardson is going to topple Cold Hill next week.

Someone wanna tell me where these Buffalo have been since Rhine left? Not the defense - they were dominant as ever in a 33-7 blowout victory - but the offense. Golden Boy Strathos rattled off a trio of touchdown passes in a win that had a larger margin of error than anyone could have anticipated, Alexander Østby was productive in an outing where he's cemented as the long-term starter...and Nikolas Isaksen?

The Vanorian wideout - who flashed a ton of potential last season - was nothing short of unstoppable. He'd finish with 7 catches for 153 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Those scores came from 45 and 63 yards out, one a dime from Aurel Strathos and the second a gorgeous catch and run by the second year pass catcher. With a visit to Richardson on the horizon, this is the team that looks more ready to come in and win the conference. After last season's debacle at quarterback, these Buffalo might just have the guy to get them back to their electric ways on offense.

Cal Barkley is usually an ebullient kind of guy on gridball matchdays. He's usually among the loudest players, quick with a joke or a pat on the back for his teammates. Obviously, when the opening kickoff happens, he's ready with his usual game face, but the time in the dressing room before walking down the stadium tunnel to the gridball pitch is fun time.

That's why several players noticed a difference. He was quiet, pensive. Running back Mike Zastudil noticed the difference in demeanour straight away.

"Is everything OK?" Zastudil asked. He saw the blond-quaffed Barkley nod his head, but he wasn't convinced. He sat down next to his signal-caller.

"Are you nervous, man? You're definitely not yourself right now." Barkley looked intently at his fullback for a moment. He nodded his head.

"It's the first time I've ever been abroad," he said. "It's the first time any of us have played in a foreign country." Zastudil nodded.

"You're right. This is a first for all of us," he said. "I thought you were worried about Alto's defence."

"We've seen defences like that before," wide receiver Dean Spencer interjected. "Benatar U plays the exact same style. Remember last year?"

Barkley nodded. He was goaded into a 15-for-42 passing day and threw just 119 yards with five interceptions. However, his one touchdown pass gave the Climbers a one-point victory that kept their national championship aspirations alive. He knew he'd have to be better against Alto. He also figured they'd ramp up their zone defences and blitzes to confuse him. Barkley looked up and saw head coach James Arthur stand at the centre of the dressing room to give his team their final pep talk. He breathed in and exhaled, then put his right hand into the centre with the other players when it was time. Finally, he stood up and walked out of the dressing room to the tunnel with the rest of the team behind him. It was go time.

**************************************************************************************************

With 1:36 remaining in the fourth quarter, the Climbers got a key stop on fourth down at their own 24 yard line and got the ball back. They were out of timeouts, but with college gridball's timing rules, Barkley knew he had enough time to drive the length of the field if needed. They also only needed a field goal to turn a one-point deficit into a two-point victory. He looked out at the defence when he got to the line of scrimmage and saw Alto in their usual zone defence. He decided he was finally just going to take what the defence gave him and dropped back. He looked and saw Zastudil get open as a defensive end lumbered toward him. He lofted a screen pass over the defender's head, Zastudil caught it, and rumbled 11 yards before getting out of bounds with 1:29 remaining.

The offence lined up in the huddle. Barkley saw the play call come in.

"Trips right, slant mid on three, ready? Break!"

On three? tight end Chris Callaway thought. They'd been going on one or two all match. He figured Barkley wanted to draw Alto offside and get an extra five yards. He lined up to the right and then went into motion. Sure enough, Barkley used a hard count and drew a defensive lineman offside.

"Offsides, 71 defence. Five yard penalty, still first down."

That moved the ball to the Climbers 40. Barkley saw the play call come in. Same play.

He called it, this time saying "on one." The snap came about a half-beat before the defence was ready for it. Barkley used a three-step drop and fired it quickly to wide receiver Buddy Holcomb, who caught it and put on a head-fake that bought him about eight extra yards. He was tackled at the Alto 47. Barkley raced up to the line pantomiming a spiking motion to give the impression he wanted to clock the ball. When he took the snap, however, he used another three-step drop and fired another pass to Holcomb. This time, Holcomb was able to get past his defender and raced to the end zone for a touchdown as the clock slid inside a minute. Matt Andersen hit the extra point, then Jensen Sorensen banged the kickoff deep into and through the end zone for a touchback.

Defensive coordinator Chris Hoskins decided to show a three-man rush, but had a safety who had looked like he was doubling a wide receiver blitz on first down. We'll let Roger Astway, the Climbers radio network play by play announcer describe what happened next.

"Trips to the left, empty backfield. Alto College is going to have to drive the length of the field. They have two of their timeouts. Looks like Hoskins is playing prevent. Here's the snap, back to throw, here comes the blitz and he's SACKED! Fumble! And it's picked up by Noga!"

The smattering of Climbers supporters in the south end zone began to cheer wildly as the rest of the crowd looked on in stunned silence.

"Tom Noga recovered the fumble after Patrick Clayton the strong safety came in on a safety blitz! Woodstock is going to get the ball back with 48 seconds remaining. Here comes Barkley and he's going to take a knee."

Barkley actually dropped back and scrambled around the backfield for a few seconds before taking that knee, dropping the clock to 39 seconds before Alto College called its second timeout. He did that again to force them to burn their final timeout and taking the clock down to 32 seconds. He then took a traditional knee that brought it down to nine seconds before Arthur decided to send Anderson on to attempt a 48-yard field goal that would be less about trying to score than it would be about burning the rest of the clock. Unlike some longer field goal attempts in Andersen's career, this time, he decided to intentionally miss the field goal. He pushed it wide right as the clock ticked off to zero.

City College earned a victory in its NSCF debut. In Sarzonia's NSCF debut. It was a hard-fought 16-10 victory over Alto College, and now Barkley was much more like his old self after the victory. The next match would feature Universidade de Soria Bats, a team representing Lisander, but this time, it would be in the familiar, friendly confines of Friedgen Stadium. It would be Woodstockers, City College students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends in attendance. It would reintroduce the element of familiarity that was absent in this opener.

It was true that the Bats put up 39 points in their opener in a rout of the Utah Utes of Jrharlcool23. It was also true that the other two teams in the Sequoia Conference each put up 30-plus points as Silverleaf University won a shootout against Ooopss National College 33-30, but the Climbers players resolved to let Arthur, Hoskins and the defensive staff worry about that.

And now, everyone wearing Climbers gear could smile along with Barkley.

NSFB: Not A Bad Start At All For Both Sides

Postby TJUN-ia » Wed Nov 24, 2021 7:54 am

The return of International College Football within TJUN-ian borders has been anticipated for a while now...and now, it's finally time. The last time the NSFB was in town, the sole team we had completed their regular-season slate 10-3 and qualified for the Playoffs by the skin of their teeth. That would turn out to be a very important moment as that team won back-to-back games to make the Championship Game from out of nowhere, only to fall short at the final hurdle against a team destined to get that crown one day. Now, a new era of the sport within our borders begins with a new QB at the saddle in Notts while "Project AU" finally gets off the ground in Green City. Both arrive in the newly-revived Mineral Conference looking to get to work...Part 3 is about to begin, and now there are two characters to follow.

Let's begin, of course, with the Trent State Feathercaps. The era of Gareth Baldwin is now over, the man who somehow dragged us up to that Championship Game, and now, the NSCF 24 Coach of the Year in Johnny Bridgeford now had to rebuild his team with Junior QB Leon Gallas, a bunch of reinforcements on defence and a new kicker and punter to do the dirty work. Sherwood Field in Notts was packed and a 32,000 sellout for the return for their returning runners-up and for Gallas, Sophie Haladay, Jordan Culter, Maxime Rolland, Raihan Dragonisky, Marnie Kelleher, Owen Parkinson, Caiomin O'Donegal, Xander Tiovannen and Yuji Idekanti, their first starts for the Feathercaps would come at the best possible place.

Their opponents were the Byses Politicians of Crilland and to say this one wasn't close would be an understatement. The only points they managed to score was a garbage time FG, so you know this one was a blowout, and Gallas managed 6 TDs on his debut start (3 via Victor Que-et-Vous, 2 via Fremont Whitehorse and one via a nice play to Pyrros Papanikolaou in Q3). In Q4, the backups took over (with some exceptions due to vacant spots on the roster due to the rise of GCU) and new backup QB Jason Steels scored a TD of his own, a nice pass Peter Borosić in the end. In terms of extra points, Xander Tiovannen managed 5/6 while backup Eleonora "Firefeet" Scafakou (great nickname by the way) managed 1/1 and a FG too to bring up the final score of 51-3. It was pure domination and ahead of our long-awaited showdown with the defending Mineral Champs UCBP Warriors on the road will certainly be the great test of this new team.

Meanwhile, at The Palace in Green City, the 2nd team was getting itself ready to kickoff their NSCF careers. Many schools in the AU Zone were competing to claim the 2nd TJUN-ian slot in the competition but in the end, the bid was won by the Green City Royal Eagles, a team with 4 languages and an explicit aim to "promote AU sports to the rest of TJUN-ia and the world". They had to start from scratch, like TSU before them, and they are using a "service by requirement" model that means no backups until "we feel the time is right for them". The all-local coaching staff of Paul Abdullahi and coordinators Adamma Isa, Fortune Eze and Idris Mohammad employ a more attacking style of football with Wishbone offence and 5-2 defence and they hoped to show that off on Kickoff Day to the home fans against the also-debuting Alexandropolis Redbirds of New Gesem.

Most of the 31,000 seats at The Palace @GCU were occupied as this game turned out to be a defensive slugfest. The two debuting QBs with all the eyes upon them were Marcos Fisher (Redbird Senior) and Moses Igbinoghene (Royal Eagle Sophomore), who both managed a TD despite the defensive stops (Fisher to Damian Buchanan in Q1, Moses to Gilbert Nyamutsamba in Q2) and with both Domenic Frazer (UA) and Glory Oparanozie (GCU) making their first tries with the leg, the scores were tied at 7-7 after the first 30 minutes of action for both NSCF programs. The second half would see both QBs do it again, with Fisher finding Mark Moss and Lucky Sithole-Sita being found by Igbinoghene, but with Frazer going 2/2 compared to Oparanozie's 1/2 (thanks to a block from Randell Todd on special teams), the visitors led by 1 and with a 4th Quarter FG by Frazer being good, that ended GCU's first game with a 13-17 defeat. Lessons were certainly learned, make no mistake, but many hope Byses can provide easier competition for a team that is looking for its first-ever win.

Every week counts now and for both schools, the road to the 12-team Playoff (or just a bowl, in GCU's case) starts here.
WE ARE! TRENT STATE!
GCU! WE BLEED GREEN!

The slow start we were promised

Ratzupalfu University of Nature (SNL) 7–10 Salamantic Universities (KOR)

Due to changes in the offensive line, we knew that the notoriously molasses-like Professors offence could be a little slow out of the gate. And it certainly was, with the new team from South Newlandia easily holding on. Ratzupalfu never fell behind by more than a score, which always kept pressure on our defence, which, while good, can't carry a team for an entire season. There were signs of life from the offence towards the end of the game, though, and there's a clear road forward. And the offence shows that it can maintain a lead by stretching their drives out and get time off the clock.

It all wouldn't have been that difficult, if it weren't for a few special team misses. No matter how the ST'ers are mostly returning from last year, you're never immune to a bad day.

Drives
Q1: Punt, Punt, Punt
Q2: Punt, Punt, Fum
Q3: Int, Punt, Punt
Q4: Int, TD, FG

The Professors completed three drives in each quarter, giving up the ball just before the end of the first and third quarters, and fumbling the ball away on the second-to-last play of the first half. Juldhauthaunden didn't have the best day with two interceptions. You can debate whether a pick is on the quarterback or not for weeks, and we probably will, but Juldhauthaunden got the ball nearly halfway through the third quarter on a third and 15 (3rd and 5 without the holding call) and overthrew Serizawa on the arm punt. The start of the fourth quarter made a lot of fans quite nervous, staring at the 7-0 deficit since early in the first half, as the quarterback threw a fairly clean spiral to Aefia, who bobbled the catch before having it ripped away from him.

All in all, without the receivers from last year, Juldhauthaunden had to make do and find a rhythm with the new guys. Going 14 from 22 for 126 yards in the end wasn't great, but he got his touchdown throw to Morquecho though the two interceptions don't reflect well on this game at all. A lot rested on the shoulders of Hunniford, the running back going for 84 yards including a heroic 25-yard carry to turn a 2nd-and-19 back into a first down. Him, Dart, Cailloux, and Ailin all got multiple carries, with mixed success, as the first game of the season looked a lot like some of the experimental lower-division teams in Ko-oren that want to see how far they can go with their running game. It wasn't a great idea from the Salamantic staff, given we had five 3-and-outs on the day. It really wasn't until late in the game that Juldhauthaunden got long drives together - and both ended with scores to boot.

The defence had a difficult time with Ratzupalfu's incredible time of possession in the first half. Dengunden and Hulzebosch were gassed, and the team relied on them as much as Walker, Xue, and Butler. Walker had himself a day, with five tackles (including one for a loss), a pass batted down, and an interception. Snelweg tossed it up to him, and Walker came down with the jump ball on Irvine's out route. The best man on the defence today was Vieira, a senior member of the team, with two quarterback hits including a sack, a tackle for loss, and countless adventures into the backfield as the Egrets' line kept getting their blocking assignments wrong when it mattered most. As soon as they didn't have a tight end or a running back to help them with blocking duties, Vieira or Zandstroom got into the backfield. This was partially the gameplan, as the Egrets opted for a lot of outside runs through passes behind the line of scrimmage and having their wide receivers block. Oilsken had two big plans - one was the quick, 'dump' pass to the outside - and the second one was a lot more successful for them. On heavy block packages, including some 22 personnel, they could get the ball through the Salamantic defensive line reliably.

In the end, with a little luck, the Salamantics start 1-0 going into a grueling season, but things will have to improve. Against either Banijan school, or Elephant Valley, it wouldn't have been 7-0 down at the half, but 21-0, and that's hard to come back from. The schedule for now sees us take on Northern Moravica, Loyola-Istria back to back, before heading to Barnettsville.

Green City 0 7 6 0 14
Alexandropolis 7 0 7 3 17

A hard-fought, smash-mouth defensive contest which saw both offenses struggle to get out of their own halves and rely on big plays to move forward. One such big play was a forty-yard reception by Buchanan at the ten-minute mark which saw the Redbirds take the first lead of the game. They would squander that lead in the second quarter however, giving up a touchdown to finish the first half tied at seven. The play of the game would prove to be Randell Todd's block of the extra point in quarter 3, but a field goal by Frazer in garbage time served to make the final score look more respectable than it was.

Spring Football, pt 1 "The Meeting"

The bi-weekly general membership meeting of the Ancient Benevolent Order of Wapiti Lodge #1, otherwise known as the Grand Lodge, came to order at two minutes past seven on a Thursday night in late November. Though official counts were never kept, the senior Wapitis in attendance couldn’t think of another meeting of their order with greater attendance ever in the century and a half of their organization’s existence. Anticipating such a crowd, the executive council had taken steps to ensure some semblance of order could be maintained; they had moved the venue from the great hall of their own lodge to the basketball arena on the campus of the University of Alexandropolis and though the meeting would remain open to the public, as all general membership meetings were, the doors were opened to Wapitis thirty minutes early to accommodate all the out-of-town members who’d driven in for this event. Though the arena had been chosen for its size and proximity to the Grand Lodge, the pennants and banners that bedecked its walls and rafters made it an auspicious venue for the conversation that was to take place here tonight.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” began Grand Chairman Otto Paczynski, voice booming over the PA system. He sat at the head of a horseshoe of chairs and tables, whereupon sat the rest of the Grand Lodge executive council. “We appreciate your time and attention to this matter. Before we begin, I would like to say that we understand why you are here, and we want you to know that your voices will be heard. Please understand that while the implications for the future of our country are vast, this is still at its core a Wapiti internal matter, and the votes of the brothers and sisters around the table will decide the outcome. I want to thank especially the brothers and sisters of the University Lodge, number seventy-nine, who came to us in due course to seek the guidance of the Grand Lodge; the brothers and sisters of the Alpha Chapter of Nu Theta who are with us tonight; and our friends in the Sphinxes, the Oryxes, the Strangers, and the Knights of Constantine, who are here tonight observing the proceedings. I will leave the matter of agenda to our Grand Parliamentarian, as always.”

The Grand Parliamentarian took the mic and went over the meeting’s agenda, which consisted of a single topic of discussion, before opening up the floor to public comments. Only one man stood up, a bald, towering black man in one of the purple twill jackets of the Sphinxes, who approached the lectern slowly, almost ponderously. By way of introduction, Paczynski said into his mic: “Emmanuel Ross, Grand Pharaoh of the True and Noble Fraternity of Sphinxes”.

“Good evening,” Ross began, “Thank you, Grand Chairman Paczynski and the rest of the Wapitis for giving us the opportunity to speak in your meeting. This is an issue of grave concern, to the Sphinxes as well as the rest of our nation. When the University of Alexandria announced the Redbirds would be participating in Nationstates College Football, the Sphinxes kept our distance, as we are wont to do. After all, the U of A is a storied, Catholic institution, and our Catholic countrymen have never believed as we do in the evils of the outside world. Now that we hear one of our esteemed fellow lodges is considering endorsing this action, we feel it is time to act. Far be it from me to direct the actions of a lodge not my own, but, Grand Chairman Paczynski, I speak with the voice of my Sphinx brothers and sisters when I caution your council against starting down this path. Thank you, and I yield my time.”

OOC Note: This is set prior to week 1

Is this finally the year Kohnhead City breaks through?

Image
Will Emilee Johansson suffer a sophmore slump or will she build off of a fantastic freshman campaign?

Milton Donnelly was clear about the goals he had in mind for the Kohnhead City University Mighty Eagles as they approached their fourth season in the NSCF. Donnelly has a Coach of the Year, three playoff appearances, and two semifinals appearances under his belt and yet he feels he hasn't been good enough. Our failure to win the Big Eight finishing second to Cold Hill University all three years in the NSCF is one of the main reasons why and the other, well it's an 0-6 record against the other class of 22 team in NSCF 24 winning Felswyr State University. KCU and FSU meet week 13 each year and we have yet to beat them in that and to add more we have been eliminated by them every single time in the playoffs.

The offensive talent for Kohnhead City is there just like it's always been and we think we finally have the recipe to beat FSU. By starting a Chromatik at quarterback in now sophmore Emilee Johansson we came our closest to beating them last year in Week 13 at Chicken King Stadium losing 27-26 with a failed two point conversion being the end of the game. Johansson was spectacular as a rookie and while she faced a rough patch with losses to Green Mountain State and Richardson in which we were shut out for the first time ever she showed that she can be even better than former quarterback Byron Joseph was. Johansson adds a lot on the ground just like Joseph when running the option offense and as a passer she adds even more than he did.

The group of running backs is without a doubt the best in college football with Herman Whitworth now a senior still the star and supposedly healthy as we begin the campaign. Whitworth is a scary man but has dealth with a rash of injuries in every single season and questions about his longevity reign rampant. No one douts his ability, they only doubt his availibility. Fortunately he has Rowena Hastroff as his backup with the junior out of Chromatika the perfect complement to Whitworth and someone who has thus far a clean bill of health. Even with Whitworth at full strength, Hastroff should be getting double digit touches whether it be on carries or receptions out of the backfield.

We have a very foreign group of receivers with all three projected starters coming from overseas led by Kalu Alazar our #1. Alazar should draw the primary corner on every team and for good reason as the Banijan easily surpassed 1000 yards in his sophmore season. Keith Gray has sub 4.3 speed and can go long at any point while Blitz Taurus if not suspended is solid in the slot with lots of upside. For the first time ever KCU should have some reliable tight ends with big freshman recruits in Tom Lundgren out of Valanora and Danicka Hess from here in Kohnhead. Especially in the redzone expect this team to have a lot of multi tight end looks that will get both of them on the field at the same time.

KCU has always believed in building through the trenches and the offensive line should remain one of the best in the business paving the way for the dominant rushing attack. The defensive line is significantly weaker than in past seasons but Robert Lawrence could easily pile up double digit sacks. Depending on Mark Lundin's play (the freshman from Valanora is highly thought of) the linebacking corp could be the best we've seen especially with Greg Mcloud ready to provide good depth. The corner group has a big loss in Zion Irving but gets Leon Elliot to help in the slot and should have a very very good safety pairing behind them.

I have a good feeling that either Kohnhead City will win the Big Eight or we will beat FSU. It's finally time for this team to show that they are one of the NSCF's elites as opposed to just a very good team and while you'd think two semifinals appearances in three seasons would show that, it hasn't. KCU is one of many teams that has the capability to win the championship and while we aren't the favorite we are certainly high on the list. This team is still on the rise especially with Johansson only a sophmore and if Herman Whitworth can stay healthy his senior season he will be the best running back in college footall.

Swisston need to show some consistency in year three

Image
Consistency is the key from going from a dark horse upset candidate to a playoff team

Projected as the fourth best team in the Big Eight last season, Swisston came in and was clearly the 5th best team losing out to Green Mountain State from Buffalostan. Year 1 was encouraging, two big upsets including a big win over Kohnhead City, and a two game winning streak over Trent State in week 13 and then in the Pioneer Bowl. Last year was not a good one for the program slumping to a 3-7 conference record (in a very difficult Big Eight mind you), before a subpar out of conference slate ending with a loss to eventual runners up Trent State.

Diego Rodriguez was fantastic as a sophmore and he was still pretty good last season yet he clearly took a step back. Sellers adds a lot in the running game but with both Rodriguez and Carey going into their Senior seasons it's clear the future will look very different for this team. They have recruited well on the defensive side of the ball especially with the linebacker corp and the secondary and are expecting to see improvements in those positions this season.

The defense for the most part is young and hungry and while it will certainly get burnt by the better offenses in our conference it should be able to more than hold its own in some matchups. The offense has all juniors and seniors starting except one sophmore in our 4th receiver Patrick Fenton so it certainly has good experience.

Callum Newman still has time but concerns are growing under the radar here. The board feels like Swisston City is underperforming and a lack of abilities on the field led to a horrible recruiting class last year especially foreign players wise with Kohnhead City emerging as the dominant power in the recruiting battlefield. Newman should be good this year but if Swisston get off to a really horrible start don't be surprised to see changes happen.

If you look at the conference right now, Swisston fall somewhere between Richardson and the two unknown schools in Panem and Methopotamia. The gap between Swisston and Richardson has got to be smaller than the gap between the two new schools. This team did nothing to inspire any confidence last season and KCU week one could halt any momentum this team had over the spring and summer. However a win in the nation's capital followed by games against the other two non-Ranorian schools would have this team in an absolutely awesome place. It's time for Swisston to show that they can be a consistent threat in the Big Eight and that Kohnhead has two good college football teams.

It is third and goal for Loyola-Istria. Going into overtime tied at 33, Lance Kabuye's NMU squad lost the coin toss and took the ball first. After being held to a field goal on that first possession, their hated rivals from Loyola-Istria had a chance to win the game on the 2nd possession. The Blue Thunder have brought the ball to the Northern Moravica two yard line, and are 2 yards away from a massive statement win against Northern Moravica to open the season.

Northern Moravica Head Coach Lance Kabuye was roaming the sideline. This series, had not gone had planned. Mugisha II Memorial Stadium was bouncing- with six false starts and one delay of game for Loyola-Istria showing who really had the greatest home field advantage in the country. That last false start had happened just a few plays ago. First and goal from the 10 for the Blue Thunder, a false start sent them back to the 15. But Lafi Senghore took a middle screen all the way down to the 2 yard line, to make second and goal from the 2. The Blue Thunder had thrown a fade route to the 6'4 Rachel Emerson, but NMU senior cornerback Mamadi Kaba and ripped the ball out just as Emerson got her hand up there.

And now, third and goal for the Blue Thunder. Lined up with 3 WRs bunched on the other side of the field. NMU's defense, seemingly, was confused. They were bouncing around- linebackers, not knowing their position. "C'mon guys, get it together." He muttered under his breath. This was the biggest play of the game. And then, he saw it. Russell Farmer, on the line, motion out by himself to the near side. A cornerback went with him. "Shit. TIMEOUT!" Lance Kabuye yelled as he sprinted from the coach's box, near the 30, to try and get the sideline referee's attention. Farmer against a CB was a mismatch- Farmer would simply box out the defensive back in the end zone on a slant for an easy touchdown. "TIME! TIME! TIME!" Kabuye yelled. The referee finally heard him just before the ball was snapped, and blew his whistle to award the timeout.

As the defense came to the sideline, he spoke to a few of his defenders. "C'mon guys, you gotta know the play!" He said. "Can't have that confusion. Also- that mismatch with Russell Farmer can't have that either." As the defensive coordinator was talking to the players, and then let them back on the field, Kabuye walked into that huddle. "Hey, Sean." The Head Coach said, speaking to the Kalactanian strong safety, Sean Gonzalez. "If Russell Farmer goes out for a route, you've got to be the guy on him. No matter what. Line up wherever he is." Sean Gonzalez simply nodded.

On the third down play, Loyola had two receivers and a backup TE on the far side of the field. With a RB in the backfield, and Russell Farmer lined up on the line of scrimmage, but on the near side. Ebou Hairte rolled right, towards the NMU sideline. But blanketing coverage on all those receivers from NMU, combined with pressure from Ailo Børve, forced Ebou Hairte to have no choice but to throw the ball into the fifth row. Kabuye looked across at the other sideline. He saw Loyola's receviers coming off of the field for some extra linemen. "JUMBO! JUMBO!" An assistant yelled behind him, as DBs came off the field for some defensive linemen. Loyola was going to go for the win. NMU's crowd was rocking.

Kabuye looked at Loyola's formation for the 4th and goal from the 2. 8 down linemen. Was that a fullback? Eric van Geel deep in the backfield. And a fullback. "Loyola carries a fullback? I don't remember that from their roster..." Kabuye said, until he looked again and saw Farmer's number at the fullback spot. He was yelling watch the play action, but with all the noise, there was no way his defenders could hear him. When Hairte snapped the football, he didn't hand it to the deep back- he gave it to the up back, Russell Farmer. NMU's defensive line had a surge, seemingly stonewalling Farmer at the 2. "C'mon, get him to the ground!" Kabuye yelled to nobody in particular. As Hairte and van Geel ran in behind to try and push Farmer into the end zone, the senior middle linebacker Bailo Guissé came flying over the top, and landed almost on Russell Farmer's chest. As he was blown back by the hit, Guissé wrapped him up, and another hit from senior defensive tackle Essa Marong brought him down.

"YES!" Lance Kabuye yelled as the head coach leapt into the air. The scenes around him were chaotic. Having stuffed the tight end for a one yard loss on 4th and goal, the defense ran out to celebrate, as NMU's sideline poured onto the field, and then after about 30 seconds, the fans poured onto the field. Random people were high-fiving him, and everybody was hugging each other. It took him some time to find Alanso Isa, but they eventually shook hands and the party was just beginning, after the dramatic win over their archrival.

Yet another North v. South Showdown Classic comes down to the final play as Northern Moravica earns dramatic victory over their archrivals to open NSCF 25

Image
Northern Moravica fans celebrate on the field after dramatic rivalry win against Loyola-Istria

HERZEGOVINA CITY, MORAVICA- In the history of Northern Moravica's and Loyola-Istria's ascendance to the NSCF, there have been three different slots to play this rivalry game. Northern always home first, while Loyola has always been home second. They've played it in weeks 2 and 7, they've played in weeks 4 and 9, and then, starting last season, they've moved it to weeks 1 and 6. There has been a mixed reception to that. Naturally, administrators at both schools haven't had much to say, saying that they'll play the game 'whenever their scheduled'. "Because of the talent levels of both teams, the history, the geography, the stakes- it doesn't matter when we play. Week 1 or Week 12- it's always going to be a big game." Said NMU AD, Horace Browning.

While there are plenty who want to have the game moved to Weeks 5 and 10, that is generally seen as unlikely. But having the game there to kick off the season- well, it gives a certain level of magnitude and significance to the game. Nobody's played any games yet. You know the expectations of these two fanbases are through the roof- and nobody's given anybody any reason to reset those expectations just yet. And you know how week 1 games are- kinda sloppy, highly energetic, still have to iron out kinks. And you're doing all that under the pressure and stoplight of playing a fierce rival.

Both coaches were speaking candidly about their approach to their week 1 showdown in Herzegovina City. "We're going to pull out every last stop to win this game." Alanso Isa told the press. "It's a marker for the beginning of the season- beginning of our turnaround. Of course, thankfully, unlike last season, Ebou Hairte isn't taking his first career snap at the Mugisha II Memorial Stadium. This is a new, reinvigorated Loyola-Istria football team. And we believe that will show on the field."

Meanwhile, Lance Kabuye was talking about the beauty of opening in front of such a raucous crowd. "Getting Loyola in Week 1 is fun- fun for the team, fun for the fans. During training camp, there's nothing that focuses the players like our week 1 opponent being that school in Istria. It makes everybody that much more ready. And it can give that extra pep to your season. A huge rivalry win in Week 1? It can give you longlasting confidence for your season. And a loss in Week 1? Well, we wouldn't know what that feels like, now would we?" Northern's head coach, of course, said that while smirking. A double reference for him, of course. First, of course, to Northern Moravica's week 1 win over Loyola last season. And second, of course, to Northern Moravica's 11-0 all-time NSCF record in Week 1 entering NSCF 25.

But forget all the smack talk- to the game! Loyola got the football to start the game. The crowd was tough for them to handle on this night, so of course, they started with a false start on their first third down of the game. "It made everything that much tougher- one hell of a house Mugisha II Memorial was today." Alanso Isa told the press in the post-game. While both teams punted on their first possession, it was Alicia Woodbrough's first career punt for NMU. There was a lot of pressure going into today's game for her- and she did not exactly rise up to the challenge. It was already a sign of disrespect when Wilhelm Ouattara-Fischer only lined up 30 yards past the line of scrimmage to field the punt. It was even worse when she hit a line drive straight to him that only officially went 27 yards. The opposition's field position weapon. Ouattara-Fischer caught that line drive, and had a good return to the NMU 42 yard line.

With that kind of field position, an offense like this one is always going to make you pay. It took 8 plays, but the drive ended in an 8 yard strike to Russell Farmer over the middle of the field for Loyola's first touchdown of the season. 7-0 to the Blue Thunder. Throughout the remainder of the quarter, each team would launch one long drive that would end up in a field goal for them, with NMU's Dwayne Markson hitting a 42 yarder while Loyola's senior kicker Sainey Kabbah hit a 31 yarder. And at the end of the first, the Blue Thunder led, 10-3. Very early in the second quarter, the Blue Thunder hit a big play down the field that kept them moving. 3rd and 8 from their own 34 yard line, and responding with a 55 yard strike down the middle of the field to Lafi Senghore. A beautiful ball thrown down the field by Ebou Hairte, and caught in stride by Senghore, who was brought down almost immediately after he brought in the football.

While that gave the Blue THunder first and goal at the 11 yard line, their red zone offense could not convert. Another field goal, and the Blue Thunder led, 13-3. That's when Northern Moravica's offense really kicked it into high gear. There's a reason Vallienté Wagner-Young is the returning NSCF Offensive Player of the Year. When he yells, he roars. It took just six plays, all chunk plays, from NMU to get their first touchdown of the game. A 75 yard drive, with five first downs and a touchdown. Wagner-Young responsible for all of them. One 12 yard carry on a QB read-option from a spread look, and otherwise, 63 yards through the air. It was Yaya Badjie who caught his first score of the season on that drive. NMU's next drive was set up after a three and out, and they rode that momentum to another score behind the arm of Wagner-Young. This one chewed a little more clock, as they gave heavy doses of Apollo Esther, but Thomas Drach caught a 17 yard touchdown pass from the slant. Northern took their first lead of the day, 17-13.

And the last touchdown came with about 1:30 left in the quarter. Northern's last possession of the quarter. 3rd and 4 from their own 42 yard line. Slot post route, and the safety followed Drach over the middle of the field. Jannik Nadine was flying down the sideline, in single coverage, and Wagner-Young's deep ball to him was perfect. Jannik Nadine, who had a step, caught the football, shook off the potential tackler, and high-stepped into the end zone for the blue chip player's first career touchdown- on his first career reception. 58 yard rainbow for the star QB's 3rd touchdown pass of the day, the Ranoria to Ranoria connection shining through. After being blitzed for 21 straight points by the home team, Loyola-Istria was able to respond after that. Ebou Hairte kept his composure, drove his team down the field, and put them in position for a third Sainey Kabbah field goal, this one from 37 yards, as time expired on the half. Northern Moravica led their archrivals at home, 24-16, at the break.

8 point game at half- anybody's ballgame. Coming out in the third quarter, Loyola's defense finally got a stop, with Abram Fairbanks knocking down a pass at the line of scrimmage on second down, while Najee Isidora blew up a screen pass to Eric van Geel for a three yard loss on third down. Fourth down, forced punt. Another line drive punt from Woodbrough as Loyola-Istria found themselves with good field position, this time at their own 44. Alanso Isa promised he'd empty out the playbook, right? And an offsides on the first snap made it first and 5 from the 49. No better time for trickery, right? A handoff to van Geel looked like it was going back up the middle- until he suddenly turned and pitched it back to Ebou Hairte. Who was flying down the middle of the field? None other than Rachel Emerson. A beautiful pass brought Loyola down to the 2 yard line. And then, some more innovation from Alanso and his brand new offensive coordinator, Bethlehem Nangobi. Eric van Geel lining up for the direct snap. Him getting the ball- and then throwing a jump pass to a wide open Rachel Emerson, of course, in the back of the end zone. Just like that, two plays for the Blue THunder, and it is 24-22 NMU. They of course, went for 2. They hit it- but a holding penalty meant they were forced to try again, from the 13. At that point, it's too far out to try the 2 pointer, and they nailed the extra point. They were down just one point, 24-23.

Both teams managed one more field goal each in the third quarter, with Dwayne Markson hitting from 44 for NMU, while Sainey Kabbah hit from 26 for Loyola. Which meant NMU entered the fourth quarter with the slimmest of leads- just one point, winning 27-26. This, of course, is when NMU thought that they could go for the kill. They continued attacking, which means not just running the ball. Throwing the football as well, keeping balance. A 12 play, 5:15 drive, meant Apollo Esther would plunge into the end zone for a 4 yard TD run with just under 10 minutes to go in regulation. 33-26. The PAT would be routine to make it an 8 point game, right? Not so fast. It was always rumored that it may be a steep learning curve for Alicia Woodbrough- and that was proven once again on this PAT. For both Banijan teams, of course, the punter serves as the holder. Good snap on the extra point, but she simply fumbled the snap. Dwayne Markson didn't have a chance to kick anything. She tried to get up and run with it, but of course, she didn't have a chance. Would that loom large? The lead remained, 33-26.

When Ebou Hairte got the football, he started directing a quality drive himself. He knew the situation- down 7, over 9 minutes left. The number of possessions left in the game was low. And when the ball was booted through the end zone by Markson, Ebou Hairte was ready to have his rivalry moment. He drove his team down the field. 3 and a half minutes to get to the NMU 12 yard line. ANd then- disaster. He was looking for an in route from Rachel Emerson on a 2nd and 4 from the 12. But heavy pressure from Ailo Børve meant he had to throw the ball off of his back foot as he got hit, so the ball sailed on him. And where did it land? Right in the arms of Blue Thunder free safety Drew Lia, for an interception in the end zone for a touchback, and the game's first turnover.

Over six minutes left- winning time. ANd that's what Northern thought they were doing. Opening up holes, Apollo Esther getting good chunks of yardage. It all came to a head. 3rd down and 9, at the Loyola 42 yard line. With winds at that point having picked up and going against them, probably outside of field goal range entirely unless they got the first down. So they trusted in their senior quarterback to get them the first down, in what was possibly four down territory. But Abram Fairbanks, Loyola's star EDGE rusher, was the star of this show. Fairbanks blew by the offensive tackle towards Wagner-Young's blind side. Wagner-Young felt him at the last moment, but it was far too late. He tried to step up, but Fairbanks not only got the sack, but swiped the football. Fumble. Justin Peterson, the DE on the other side, dove on the football at midfield.

Turnover. Alanso Isa almost ran out himself to celebrate with Fairbanks, as the EDGE rusher chest bumped his 70 year old head coach on the sideline. And the Blue Thunder had life. Hairte wasn't going to let this opportunity get away from him. He drove his team down the field, and Eric van Geel scored on a 7 yard swing pass on 1st and goal with 27 seconds left in regulation. And this rivalry- always emotionally amped, right? He said something to Bailo Guissé, and then he hit Guissé with a wave. Of course, at this point, the referee had no choice- had to flag him 15 yards. Naturally, Kabuye had this applied to the PAT, to prevent Loyola from going for 2. Loyola kicked the extra point, the teams were tied at 33 a piece. And after NMU ran for no gain on their first down, they let the clock run out and this rivalry was headed to overtime.

33-33. Loyola-Istria called heads, won the toss, and naturally, deferred. Two key plays on that first possesion of overtime for NMU. The first? A holding penalty on 2nd and 10, that gave NMU a 2nd and 20 from their own 35. No matter- a six yard run by Wagner-Young was followed by a 22 yard strike to Jannik Nadine, to give the team first and goal at the 7 yard line. While NMU could not score a touchdown, their chip shot field goal attempt was obviously much easier than a potential 45+ yarder in overtime for a true freshman kicker, who was making his debut.

The second possesion, of course, was Loyola's- with a chance to tie or win the game. On their first play, they had gone for it all, but a pass to Rachel Emerson down the sideline could not be completed, as the Cassadagan was blanketed, and there was nowhere for Hairte to go with the football. On 2nd down, Hairte ran a QB draw for 8 yards. 3rd and 2 at the 17, a handoff to van Geel net them 7 yards, and a 1st and goal. 10 yards away from what would be a stunning upset road win in this rivalry. And then- the rest is history(OOC note: see the portion of this RP above the news article for the information on the final series of the game).

What a game this was. A true heavyweight prize fight with two teams, who feel that they are in contention for the Celestia Conference title, and more this season. "They gave us haymaker after haymaker." Lance Kabuye told a reporter after the game, screaming himself hoarse with all those NMU fans on the field. "But we were able to make one more play. Kudos to these guys on defense- they had three chances to score from 2 yards out, and they were stonewalled. Everybody did their job, and people made big-time plays in big-time moments. That's what this team is about. And- hats off to my quarterback. What a start to the season, right?"

While the Northern fans were jubilant, it felt like a kick in the ribs to the Loyola fanbase. "We won't lie- that was painful." QB Ebou Hairte said in the postgame press conferences. "I'm upset. I hate losing. But this is a long season- that was game one of thirteen. We've got to look forward- in just six days, we've gotta travel to Barnettsville to taken on Fair Haven State on Friday night. We're going to learn from this game, apply those lessons, and doggone it, when they come back to the Lighting Yard in just 5 weeks time- these people better be ready to ball out." While an overtime loss to NMU is always the worst, it is not the end of the world. Loyola fans may be able to look back and say, this team played pretty damn well. On the road, week 1, hostile environment. They made big plays, clutch plays, on both sides of the football. NMU made one more- yes. But this is certainly not a team that can be counted out of any picture just yet.

Both teams will be on the road in Week 2. Like previously mentioned, on Friday night, Loyola-Istria will travel to Fair Haven State. And on Saturday, Northern Moravica will travel to Ko-oren to take on the Salamantic Universities.

Everybody Wants To Be A Champion Until It's Time To Do What Champions Do: The Time Has Come For Richardson, Cold Hill

Image
Thumbnail for a promotional video advertising the Governors - Buffalo matchup featuring Richardson linebacker Kaiser Belfort and Cold Hill quarterback Aurel "Golden Boy" Strathos

What rivalry. Richardson used to be the best football program in the country, and all anyone talks about is that we played them in the last three domestic championships. No one will point out that we won all three of those games, and we swept them last season in NSCF play. They aren't the class of the Big 8 anymore. Let them roll around in the mud with the jokers in Kohnhead City and fight over our scraps. There's your rivalry. But please, give my team some respect.

-Cold Hill Head Coach Chris Dale when asked about the upcoming visit to Dietrich Stadium.

It's easy to talk about. Everyone wants to be a champion until it's time to do what champions do. Substitute anything you want in there. All-Ranoria, starter, hell, college football player. I've seen the work these men and women have put in. Let the Buffalo flood social media. Talk is cheap.

-Governors Head Coach Richard Steinheil after concluding Friday walkthroughs with his team

So yeah, there's no love lost between these two programs. Both squads went 12-0 this season in domestic play despite being banned from postseason competition, and of course won their NSCF openers to make it a nice 13-0 on the season total. For Richardson, it's a streak of 16 straight wins going back to NSCF 24, where they won their last two out of conference games (including another win over the Blue Thunder), and a nice performance in the Drawk Bowl). So needless to say, both teams will be coming in gassed up to prove that their current standing is no fluke.

Both teams will be relying on their defenses in this one, particularly for the Buffalo, who haven't put up points in the last couple seasons the way they're used to. Headed by a secondary from hell, this is one of the best defenses this program has ever fielded. Featuring the best cornerback duo in football with Koman Tabor and Victoria Mio and playmaking safeties in Agnor Viridian and Prokopios Vortigern Rooijakkers, there's never much room to throw against this group. And up front, a steady rotation of Candace Ferrett, Corrin Silva, and freshman sensation Kenneth Bray make sure opposing quarterbacks have plenty to think about on ever snap.

Not that Richardson is without its own teeth. They feature one of the best offensive lines in football, loaded with top-notch recruits from across the world and their own defense? They've got some studs. An active mixed martial arts fighter, Kaiser Belfort is vicious at inside linebacker, racking up tackles and laying the hammer down at any given opportunity...but he's not the straw that stirs this drink. That's Gideon Kearse.

As a freshman, Kearse made his presence felt, racking up 9.5 sacks, 6 tackles for a loss, and a nice 53 tackles. Our guess?

He's going to blow those numbers away this year. He's off to a good start, racking up a pair of quarterback takedowns in week one to get the ball rolling. If Richardson is going to win this game, he and his foil on the other side - speed rusher Kasper Ulvested - will have to show out on their homefield. If there's a way to exploit Cold Hill, it's to make Aurel Strathos turn the football over, and there's no better way to do that than hitting him early and often.

And offensively? Cold Hill's pass rush is lethal. We mentioned Candace Ferrett, Kenneth Bray, and Corrin Silva along with a lethal secondary, but fortunately...Richardson isn't much of a passing team anyway these days. And with the offensive line they have, they'll be giving the ball to their main man, Elliot Roach all day. If he gets less than 30 carries, we'll be surprised. Richard Steinheil is an old school coach, a guy that likes his players to win their matchups and impose their will on the other team, and that's what this is going to come down to, as it always does. A Buffalo squad with talent up to the gazoo and a Governor squad with the heart and grit to take it to anyone, anytime, anywhere.

We've got our bets hedged, personally. So, who's it gonna be?

New Lakeland University Tycoons

About New Lakeland University: The campus is located in the city of New Lakeland, which is in the Northwest portion of Cassadaigua. It is seen as one of the most prestigious academic schools to get into if you are looking for a career in business, finance, or marketing. As such, it is a difficult school to get into, and has some of the higher tuition costs within the Matriarchy. Despite its strong focus on academics, athletics have not taken a back seat at this institution. The administration is willing to offer scholarships to the biggest athletic talents and that has been rewarded with success on the basketball court when NLU won the NSCAA 9 championship.

Student-Athletes may opt for the more difficult curriculum that NLU offers if they wish to take advantage of the incredible academic opportunity that has been provided for them. However, if student-athletes do not wish to take this path and want to take easier courses so they can focus on their sport of choice, the school will not press the issue and does offer those easier majors.

Stadium:
The team plays at the Stephanie H. Wiseman Stadium which is located two blocks away from the main campus. It is named for one of the school’s most notable alumni, and seats 78,700 for football.

Team Colors: These would be green and gold. The home jersey is a dark green, with a gold vertical stripe going down each of the sides. Pants are the same green color with the same vertical gold stripe. The number is in white, trimmed in gold, as is the player name.

The away jersey white, with a vertical dark green stripe going down each side. The pants are gold, with a similar vertical stripe. Both the number and the name are in gold, trimmed in black.

The helmet is gold, with a dark green stripe going down the middle. On each side of the helmet, “NLU” is displayed, in dark green, in a diagonal, interlocking fashion, similar to how the “CD” interlocks on the flag.

Brattleboro Technical Institute “Brats”

About Brattleboro Technical Institute: This is the leading technical and scientific university within Cassadaigua. It focuses mainly on technological innovation, but also has a strong emphasis on medical research. It is the most expensive school to get into in the country, but if these fields interest a student, they will get plenty of value out of their education. BTI is not as hard to get into as New Lakeland University, because of their variety of courses offered, but some programs within the school are more difficult to get into, than others. Due to that, BTI has a more vibrant social scene than NLU.

Home Stadium: Alumni Stadium, capacity 67,330. The stadium is not named for anyone or anything because they pride themselves on letting it be available for all students, past and present. It is not as state of the art as Five Star Mobile Stadium, which is also in Brattleboro, but is still maintained to a high level. Be advised that if you are coming here, cash is not accepted here. All payments must be made with a credit card or a contactless method.

Tycoons struggle in Post-Traynor Era,
By Chelsea Dufresne, Concord Heights Times

With two seasons in the books now of Cassadagan schools participating in the NSCF, most of you have made your pick as to which of the two schools you are going to be rooting for. I know that here in Concord Heights, New Lakeland University has a little more of a following than the Brattleboro Technical Institute, despite BTI being closer to Concord Heights. Of course, that is also seen to be the reason why NLU is more preferable here, as well. BTI is simply too much of a rival, and NLU, well, a little more tolerable. Some bad feelings could be present too, due to the fact that BTI got the nod to be our second school over the University of Concord Heights.

The head to head meeting between the schools kicked off the campaign, taking place at Stephanie H. Wiseman Stadium on the campus of New Lakeland University. So far, the Tycoons have been better that the Brats, and they were looking to show their muscle once again, but the team had one clear problem: the absence of Erika Traynor. The quarterback who was taken #1 overall in the most recent CFL draft was credited with doing many of the little things behind the scenes as well as being the leader of the team on the field. Think back to Traynor as a sophomore, before NLU ever took the next step into international college football, as she was one of the bigger supporters of the move. Then, when it became official, Erika continued to be the leader, promising that the team would continue to do the right things off the field, and for the two years that they have been at this level, they have done so. The Tycoons actually saw their cumulative GPA increase from NSCF 23, to 24, and now to 25. And if it wasn’t for sophomore Stuart Scanlon becoming the first academic suspension of the team (Brat Tech has one too, so they can’t gloat), then all has been great for the Tycoons off the field. Then, consider how quickly they became successful on the field, and everything was perfect.

Now, Traynor plays her football far away from New Lakeland, and much closer to Concord Heights, in nearby Sterling Heights.
With the weak (to put it nicely) offensive line that Sterling Heights, Traynor will soon realize what most #1 overall picks, as QB’s, learn when they go professional: bad teams the year prior typically don’t provide good pass protection. It’s yet another chapter of Erika’s career that begins.

For New Lakeland, this means that the Jenna Montgomery era begins as far as the quarterback. At least for one year, as the Senior who spent the last three years as Traynor’s backup will get her opportunity to shine. In the long run, it is believed that freshman Tara Newsome, the #1-rated high school senior in all of Cassadaigua, regardless of position, will take over, and may see time this year. But for now, Montgomery gets the job. Coach Brewer states that, “the increased level of competition that we play at in the NSCF makes it hard for someone fresh out of high school. We have a plan for Tara, and Tara understands that.” Stacey Maltzman, the Tycoons’ leading receiver also graduated, as well as 4/5ths of the starting offensive line. Perhaps that second part helps the decision of Brewer to not start Newsome so quickly.

On the other side of the field, a young quarterback was going to get the start as sophomore Leonardo Torrent, who is from Ranoria, was named the starter for Brattleboro Technical Institute. The Brats have a little more stability on offensive, losing only one starter on the offensive line as well as bringing back their entire receiving corps. It does seem as though this roster has only grown since last year while the Tycoons were a little more in flux. Maybe, in the end, we should not be so surprised with how things panned out.

Torrent drove the Brats up the field quickly on their opening possession, going 73 yards, in six plays, finished off by a 16-yard TD pass from Torrent to Bailey. Montgomery was decent on the next drive, but with the drive stalling in the red zone, Brianna Imbrogno’s 33-yard FG was the answer, making it 7-3. The Tycoons held the Brats on their next possession, but again had to settle for an Imbrogno FG on offense, making it 7-6.

The second quarter did the Tycoons in, with the Brats engineering two TD drives, with Torrent looking exceptional. He would throw two more TD passes, one more to Bailey (for 12) and then one to tight end Kenzie Blankenship, from three yards out, to make it 21-6 at halftime.

New Lakeland bounced back when Drawkian sophomore Brice Bullard ran it in from two yards out to make it 21-13, but on their next possession, Montgomery was intercepted by Chloe Kinzett, setting up a short field for the Brats. Ashley Brown punched it in from five to make it 28-13.

The only score of the fourth came on a Montogomery- to- Allie Stone 36 yard TD pass, but the two-point conversion attempt would be unsuccessful. That would not matter all that much, anyway, since the Tycoons were unable to get ball past their own 35-yard line at any point for the rest of the game. We’ll soon learn if the Tycoons can put this beyond them or if maybe the Brats are much stronger than advertised. New Lakeland University is on the road next against someone they should beat, Murderbum’s Rotenburg Island University, and the Brats also travel, heading to Schima Bas to play Crown’s College.

Blue Jays, third and goal, Melia is dropping back again. Pocket holds, he’s scanning, throws, looking for Singh, and it’s caught! Touchdown Blue Jays, a devastating blow to the Red Elephants as the Blue Jays take a lead with only about three minutes left to play. Extra point pending, the score is now 27-24.

It had been a struggle for the Red Elephants out of the gate. They were held to no touchdowns in the first half, and were trailing 6-14 at the half of their first home game of the season. Additionally, the Defensive Line for the Red Elephants was struggling, allowing Jay Walker to rack up yards for the Blue Jays.
With the successful extra point, the Blue Jays now lead 28-24, and it will be Gauge Lawson receiving the kickoff by junior Aaron Buckley. Kick is on the way, deep on the left side, Lawson catches it, runs upfield, gets a block, has a bit of room, across the 30, and eventually brought down at around the 38. Nice return by Lawson, still 62 yards to go for Herron and EVU, they still have all their timeouts.

Despite the Red Elephants finally recording their first touchdown of the season in the third quarter, the Blue Jays continued to outbattle them. Heading into the last quarter, the Elephants were still trailing, 16-21.
2nd and 10 for Elephant Valley. Herron, drops back, searching, throws, it’s caught by Yafet up the middle for a gain of about 15, that’s gonna get the Red Elephants across midfield. Beautiful catch there by Yafet, the freshman is already making a big impact for this team. Elephant Valley has just used their first time out of the half, there’s about 2 minutes remaining on the clock.

Melia was looking great for the Blue Jays in his first start this season, recording 4 touchdowns, 312 yards with no interceptions. The Red Elephants secondary was actually looking alright, Melia was just able to keep throwing it short or medium into open space. The linebackers were the ones actually struggling the most.
3rd down now for the Elephants, just over a minute left on the clock. Seven to go, they need to reach the 27 for a fresh set of downs. Three receivers out there, Herron in shotgun, pressure comes, Morrison with a chance, Herron tries to get out but has to throw it away. Fourth down Red Elephants!

It wasn’t an easy game for the Red Elephants by any means. The Blue Jays had a very talented, potent offense, and the front seven was still just growing together with two new freshman. Nevertheless, they weren’t expected to struggle defensively like this. Maybe it was just bad luck; Jackie Bell and Joshua Cox each dropped a tough, but makable interception in the first quarter.
Fourth and seven, games’ on the line for the Red Elephants here. Herron, pocket is holding, has time, throws, and it’s caught! Caught by de Laramie near the 20, first down Red Elephants! Beautiful sideline catch, de Laramie played that perfectly against redshirt junior Ashton Wilcox, and Herron dropped it right in the basket!

Herron came to play in the second half. After his first touchdown pass for the season, finding de Laramie for 16 yards, he led the team to their first lead of the season when he led a 75-yard drive capped off with finding de Laramie in the end zone again for a second TD, before handing it off to Lawson for a successful two-point conversion to put the Red Elephants up by three.
Second and 10, Elephants have one timeout and about 40 seconds left to go for twenty yards. Herron hands it off to Lawson, who tries to get the edge, cuts inside, breaks a man’s ankles, and is finally brought down with a gain of about eight, short of a first down. Red Elephants will take their final timeout.

Despite playing well, he struggled to bring Pond and Yafet into the mix early. Before the final drive, Pond had just two catches for 11 yards, while Yafet had three for 31. De Laramie was the target of more than half of all passes Herron threw.
Third and three from the 13. Thirty-two seconds remaining on the clock, no timeouts. Herron, drops back, looking, throws, TOUCHDOWN! TOUCHDOWN RED ELEPHANTS! Herron finds the freshman, Gabriel Yafet, for his first career touchdown! He had beaten Cousins, and Herron threw a dime to him! The Red Elephants lead, and this should be the game winner!

Nicole Manstrom, Aubin Rouzet Shine as Firehawks Shut Out Debutants

FIREHAWKS' ROOST, FELSWYR, MOUNTAIN DISTRICT - Coming into this season, with four new starters on the offensive line and the loss of Niles Gwivern, the great Senior Tight End, everyone knew that there would be some growing pains as Sarai Gwenderyn helped the offense to reach their standard. On the other side of the ball, four players would be making their first starts as well, but with Park Mi-Hyeon, Sage "Bricks" Sterling and Ozioma Mazzi still in the lineup, they weren't expected to miss too much.

Sarai Gwenderyn went 12 of 15 for 183 yards while also running the ball 15 times for 134 yards and a score, Nyata Antonucci added 53 yards on the ground in 12 carries as the Firehawks ran 12 plays from the I-formation to surprise everyone, and the Firehawks shut out Royal Arimtage University to the tune of 16-0 to open up their NSCF title defense.

Felswyr State had long, sustained drives - something that they never had during the three prior years. Their only touchdown came on a 15-play, 83-yard drive with 6 runs and 9 passes as the fullback Vilievna and the running back Antonucci plowed ahead, the first time in FSU history that the Firehawks have actually used a running formation as they continue to evolve.

"We will always remain a pass-first team," promised Offensive Coordinator Naia Curentino, "But when you have the personnel to try different things, you adapt. Antonucci has been biding her time, and Vilievna gives us the lead blocker we were missing. Expect more of that."

On the defensive side of the ball, it would be OLB Nicole Manstrom and DE Aubin Rouzet that made their presence known. Manstrom had seven tackles and two sacks, Rouzet had three sacks, and the Firehawks allowed a total of 219 yards and 8 first downs, not allowing their opponents to get within the FSU 40.

"They were like a swarm of bees out there," stated Gwenderyn afterwards, "Mi-Hyeon really had everyone ready to go, and they played tough and hard out there."

The Firehawks are ready to win either by airing it out and choking out their opponents or by controlling the time of possession with some ground game as well.

"Keep an eye on us going forward," commented Isidora Noles, "We're a work in progress."

Lava Shut Out in Debut

JOHNSTON MEMORIAL STADIUM, STARAMARA, URRHED ISLAND - If you ask the coaching staff of the Staramara Technical University Lava, every one of them would admit that they knew walking into the NSCF would be a challenge.

What they didn't expect, though, was being shut out 0-6 by their first opponents, the Hoofstra University Pride.

Gabrielle Ziegler caught 5 passes for 38 yards and ran the ball 11 times for 41 yards while Lana Rhodes ran the ball for 13 times for 38. Sheila Pantoja went 7 of 11 for 78 yards in the loss as the Lava was 2-of-13 on third down and couldn't sustain drives.

"We wasted a solid performance from our defense," admitted Sheila Pantoja, "We couldn't stay on the field and there were way too many penalties. I simply need to play better."

Defensively, Jere Rinaldi led all players with eighteen tackles while Masresha Meba added four tackles for loss and two sacks in his first game for the Lava as they only allowed the Pride inside the 20 yard line twice and held them to a field goal each time.

"It was a solid first game," commented Rinaldi afterwards, "Bigger challenges lie ahead."

Though the first game in STU's NSCF history ended in a loss, everyone remains optimistic.

"It's a long season," stated Head Coach Laverna Getz to end the press conference, "We think we have the potential to surprise some people before everything is said and done."

Firehawks to Host Lava in First Ever Flame Bowl

With the addition of the STU Lava into the NSCF ranks, Chromatika will join the ranks of Ranoria, Banija, Valanora, Kohnhead, South Newlandia, and many others in having two teams play in the NSCF in the same conference. This means that twice a year, two Chromatik schools will play each other - in a series that's been named the Flame Bowl.

The Firehawks will be the ones to host the first game of the series at the Firehawks' Roost in the second part of their two-game homestand to start the season. FSU, the defending NSCF champions, had a solid but not spectacular 16-0 victory to begin their season, with the Firehawks surprising everyone by running the ball from the I-formation a dozen times, the first time in their storied history that they've run plays from that formation.

Julian Watt, Alexis Coleman, Kassa Essayas, and Trenton Herbert will be making their second starts together as a line, led by the veteran Mikel Kingston.

The Lava, on the other hand, will be looking to score the upset as they head to Felswyr. Staramara Tech wasn't able to find any offensive going against the Hoofstra Pride, with Ziegler, Rhodes, and Pantoja all being held by the Karditani University. They will now have the challenge of playing against Park Mi-Hyeon and the young, hungry defensive core of the Firehawks.

"They are the defending champions," Lana Rhodes said matter-of-factly, "It will definitely be a challenge but a way for us to measure ourselves up."

Sarai Gwenderyn is excited about having a domestic school to play against.

"It's a chance to show that we are the best team in the country, Everyone says that the fact that we don't get to play University of Myana, Chromia Central College University, or Z'ai'ai Institute of Technology is a shame. We'll have a chance to play STU and win; then, we'll tell the rest of them that if they ever want to play us, we're game."

The Firehawks' Roost is expected to be at capacity seating for the game.

"It's the first ever matchup in the NSCF between two Chromatik schools," says Joachim Gaha, a Senior at Felswyr State University, "Who wouldn't be excited?"

Those in the know know quite well that both of the schools representing the Eternal Empire in the NSCF came into the season with the clear goal of first grabbing the conference title and then to make a strong playoff push. Neither team saw whole units of their roster be turned over as it has in some seasons and with another year of experience under the belt for some of their stars and budding prospects, it looks to be a season where both Vanorian schools should be at the top of their game. Many within the Empire already have a strong notion that senior quarterback Arquímedes Concepción is the leading frontrunner from both schools to contend for the MVP award, if there is to be one for either the Rockets or Raiders this season. The senior is a four year starter, having played every single game for the Raiders since landing on campus, a feat that is not that common these days not just among Vanorian universities but across the entire NSCF landscape, making the player a little bit special already. However he has matured from just a game manager behind center to being one of the best passers in the entire NSCF, though he is oft overlooked because of the lack of talent around him.

That does not look to be the case though this season, with the Raiders have a three headed attack in their offense, with Arquímedes leading the way as the signal caller, while second year hybrid back Ty Gardner and junior wideout Kawsu Gaye will be big parts of this offense as well. Gardner provides an unique matchup problem for opposition defensive coordinators, as the running back has all the tools and skill needed to line up out on the outside as a receiver as well, letting the Raiders run an empty package with little problem. The addition of Blake Joyner to the receiving corps means that Gaye can not be double covered or else Joyner will be free to dominate at the position. It really will be a pick your poison type of scenario for all the opponents of the Raiders this year and one can expect a lot of scoring from this immensely talented group. The defense will be looking to a veteran secondary to make the stops needed in order to let the offense do what it does, as they are not expected to dominate their opponents, only look to control them and get a few key stops here and there to keep momentum on the Raiders' side.

For the Rockets on the other hand, they will be placing their faith in a junior college transfer from Ranoria, with Kualu Luani beating out the two seniors for the starting job during the summer workouts to be the Rockets' starting quarterback. Much like the Raiders, the Rockets have an absolutely stacked receiving corps, such that the best receiver to come out of the Magnus Academy in some time, Max Strömberg, is not starting but that does not mean we will not see him. Max is penciled in as the fourth string wide receiver to start the season, meaning he will be on the field a lot in shotgun formations, adding to an already an elite offense that has been among the best in the NSCF the last two seasons. That trend is going to need to continue if the Rockets are going to being able to achieve their lofty ambitions, as the defense that was shredded once the team was out of conference play last season now has plenty of underclassmen starting. While there is talent on the defense, it is not likely to replicate the sort of performance it had for most of conference play last season and is the weakness of the Rockets in their attempts to bring a NSCF title to Raynor City.

The Battle for the Royal Saber is usually a midway and end of season affair, however this season the rivalry game between the two Vanorian schools was played as the first game of the season and once again in Mar Sara for the first of the two iterations of the contest this season. In much the same vein as the last two season, the Raiders were a step ahead of their countrymen, with Arquímedes living up to the early season hype with over three hundred yards and four touchdowns in the opening game. Unlike the last two seasons where the Raiders would win their home game thanks to field goals as time expired, their would be no need after Luani could not convert a fourth and three from the Raiders' forty-two with a minute to go, instead the Raiders were able to line up in victory formation and see out the thrity-four to thirty victory and taking back the trophy for the time being. It is not the start the Rockets will have been hoping for and the defensive concerns were on obvious display and will need quick fixing as they stay on the road in week two, traveling to face Thereisnogodistan. It is a game that could boost morale if they do get a victory or really put the team in a bad way if they fail to grab a win. Meanwhile the Raiders will be traveling to the old powers of the Ceneisis Naval Academy to try and establish a firm control over the conference to start the season with and maintain Vanorian dominance over the conference since arriving a few seasons ago.

NSCF 25: CENEISIS NAVAL ACADEMY MATCHDAY ONE

Max. Roch. Inst. 3 10 7 0 20
Cen. Naval 14 14 7 7 42

Ah, it feels so good to be back once again. It feels like it’s been an awfully long time since I last covered college football, but really now, it’s more like it’s just been a year before. And we’ve had some coverage of Arena Bowls here and there along with the FNLAF to keep us all busy, but now it’s time to get back to NSCF, back to covering Ceneisis Naval and NGD Community. Last season, after both colleges decided to finally start recruiting internationally, they promised that they would both be back on top. Well, that proved to be a false dawn, didn’t it? Once again, both CenNaval and NGD ended up at the bottom of the Zephyr Conference. A far cry from the good old days when both colleges were the dominant force in Zephyr, right? But no. This time, both Claude Vorwaerts and Francois-Michel Nkong’o are sure that this is the season that both of their schools get back to being good. Well, we’ll just have to see about that.

And so far, surprisingly enough, CenNaval are actually living up to their promise! Well, NGD are too, but we’ll cover them in a separate post. Right now, let’s focus on Ceneisis Naval. Everyone seemed to make a big deal of Ceneisis finally recruiting from outside the APOC Coalition, and when two of those recruits, Dakota Regan from Drawkland and Claudia Atkins from Kohnhead, arrived at Porcusces to play, everyone seemed to expect big things from those two. Of course, this all failed to take into account the fact that both Regan and Atkins were just freshmen and weren’t expected to play many snaps across the whole season. And of course, this didn’t stop some of CNA’s more militant fans to demand that they be played more even as it became increasingly obvious that the Ensigns were headed for another losing season.

But that was last season. This season, expectations have been tempered yet again, but there remain those who are hopeful and optimistic that this is the season that the Ensigns finally turn the corner, and so far it appears that those optimistic faithful are getting their faith rewarded and vindicated. This time, it is the Ensigns who have won in their first game of the 25th season of NSCF, and with them scoring 42-20 against conference newcomers Maximus Rochester Institute for Science and Technological Research (what a mouthful, eh?), it seemed like a fitting echo to the result that they got in their first game last season (47-17 against TJUN-ia’s Trent State).

Eric Bush and Eduardo Hendrix are definitely making the most out of their final year in college since they know that this is the last year that they can play football before they have to serve in the Fleftic Navy for at least two years. The two of them connected the most to get thirteen first downs and three touchdowns for the Ensigns, and you just get the feeling that the two of them want to make lasting positive memories of their time with the Naval Academy. I’m not going to lie; if anyone deserves to graduate from the Academy with a bang then it’s these guys. They were there through thick and thin, playing out of their skins even as the Ensigns got dominated by newer and better college teams. They both know that they won’t be around when the renaissance comes for CenNaval, but at least they would have played a part in bringing it about. Hey, someone’s got to do the dirty work, right?

And for those who were wondering what happened to the foreign recruits, well, they finally got their first snaps of the new season in the fourth quarter. After Rodrigo Nicolosi scored a pick-six, it just made sense to let the second string play the rest of the game after the first string had been slapping around MRI so much in the first three quarters. And let me say, Ceneisis may have just struck pay dirt with Dakota Regan. Sure, she’s a little bit rough around the edges, but I would say that they’ve got the quarterback position secure for the next two seasons. I don’t want to sound like an armchair analyst (but I probably already do anyway), but I think Dakota may just be the QB Ceneisis needs to return to relevance. And I’d very much love to get on this wild ride. Tyler Oehlert, Tyler Oehlert, Tyler Oehlert...

NSCF 25: THEREISNOGODISTAN COMMUNITY COLLEGE MATCHDAY ONE

Mancodas 0 0 6 7 13
Thereisnogodistan 0 0 6 14 20

All right, we’re done with Ceneisis Naval Academy, so now it’s time to shift our focus on to Thereisnogodistan Community College. Like CenNaval, NGD’s been struggling to stay competitive in the Zephyr Conference for a little long while now. They tried their hand at recruiting outside the Coalition, but given that NGD Community College is in some colonial backwater, it’s no surprise that not a lot of people want to go there and play for the team. Still, their recruitment efforts paid off a little bit, and we’ve got two Chromatiks playing for the Atheists now, Marquis de Francine and Ambrose Zuniga. The bad news is that NGD got transferees instead of actual high school recruits so Zuniga is already a senior this year and will graduate, while de Francine has definitely got at least one more year left in her tank.

But the good news is that both of NGD’s foreign players are definitely up to the task. Ambrose Zuniga made life hell for the opposing quarterback, putting the pressure on the poor guy’s receivers, and not once did he get flagged for pass interference. Now that is the mark of a great defender. The first half of the game was a bit dead, if I’m being honest though. The defense was doing all the work in the first half, and of course, for a lot of Flefts, that’s a deal breaker. We want to see offense! We want to see first downs, we want to see touchdowns! But we would have to settle for field goals, at least in the third quarter. Both Mancodas and NGD settled for field goals even though NGD, at the very least, had a golden chance to score a touchdown. If only Fredrick Shaffer hadn’t been stuffed at the 1-yard line then maybe he could have scored NGD’s first TD.

You want to know who got the first touchdown for NGD this season? Oren Weinberger. Yes, a safety scored the Atheists’ first touchdown of NSCF 25. Axel Goddard had done a splendid job of pinning Mancodas to their own 9-yard line, and after two incomplete passes, the Mancodas quarterback just threw a bomb down the middle hoping that one of his wide receivers would get their hands on it. Instead, it was Weinberger of the Atheists who nicked the ball and then took it to the pylon for a pick-six. What a way to start the fourth quarter, eh? And then Mancodas did a wonderful job of eating up the clock (twelve minutes, to be exact) before they finally scored their first touchdown, leaving NGD just a little under two minutes to do anything.

And that was where Frankie Nkong’o’s patented time management strategy came into play. Wiley Atwater alternated between the pass and the rush to gain yardage as the Atheists marched up the field from their 25-yard line, and with only 21 seconds left on the clock, the team had managed to get themselves within sight of goal. The first attempt to rush the end zone with Fred Shaffer didn’t work out, just like the last time, so the team had to hurry up if they didn’t want the game to go to overtime. Enter Marquise de Francine. She’s played almost every single offensive snap in this game because she’s the only starting quality tight end that NGD has, so it would have been forgivable if she was feeling a bit gassed. But Marquise still managed to find that last bit of strength that she had to execute one more play, and that play was a short pass to her, and then it was up to her to get into the end zone. And she did it. The madwoman actually did it.

So that’s how both Fleftic schools were able to get their season off to a positive start. A word of caution though, to those who are thinking that this is the start of the Zephyr renaissance: this is just the start of the season. Most if not all teams are still rusty from the break, and a lot of personnel has been shifted and/or moved on. We can’t yet judge an entire season on the outcome of just one game. Just something to think about. Tanaka Okamoto, Tanaka Okamoto, Tanaka Okamoto...

HERE WE GO AGAIN

After a crushing 31-28 loss to Elephant Valley, the Blue Jays moved on to face perennial power Loyola-Istria, coming off a week 1 loss themselves. QB Ebou Hairte didn’t exactly dominate the Jays defense, but did throw for 310 yards and 2 scores, as the Thunder did what they needed to do. Eric van Geel torched the D for a 73-yard scamper to score the other touchdown, and picked up 135 yards in total on the ground. The kicking game did well also as Sainey Kabbah hit a 56 yard and a 36 yard field goal.

For Fair Haven, Leonard Melia did throw for 192 and 2 scores, one was in garbage time however. Jay Walker ran for 86 yards with 1 score.
