BasketLeague Omerica
We can’t quite believe it either…

The twenty-four teams of BasketLeague are divided into two conferences, which are in turn divided into three divisions each. Each team plays 74 games during the qualifying season (or “regular season” to uncultured foreigners), 37 at home and 37 away; teams play every other team in their division six times, every team in the other divisions of their conference four times and every team in the opposite conference twice.

The top team in each division at the end of the qualifying season advances to the BasketLeague Finals, while the top two teams in each conference that failed to win their division contest best-of-five playoffs for the last Finals berths. The four finalists in each conference are seeded according to their qualifying season records and play best-of-seven series to determine their conference’s entrant to the BasketLeague Grand Finals. In the playoffs and in each round of the Finals, the team with the better qualifying season record has home court advantage.

The BasketLeague champions and the conference winners receive berths to the IUBC; if one of the conference winners also win the BasketLeague championship, the top team in the league that failed to win their conference takes the final IUBC berth.

IUBC Trophy XXII
In contrast to the previous edition, the preliminaries weren’t entirely discouraging for BasketLeague. The Knights came away with a convincing victory over their Chromatik opposition in the qualifying round, only to be easily put to the sword by Magevskaya in the playoff round. For Palais des Reines, the qualifying round bye came in handy, as the Charlescourt team easily despatched their Valladar opposition in a comprehensive and mildly surprising upset.

The BasketLeague champions faltered on matchday 1, giving away their lead in the final minutes of the match, but rallied to win four on the bounce and secure tickets to Hispinas with a match to spare. Unfortunately, Comhlathas blew their final group game in Carloburgo, forfeiting any chance to win the group: despite the Colerainians having the sole positive point differential in the group, Cloudsdale Warriors defeated Balun in the last game and squeaked to a narrow win thanks to head-to-head matches counting double.

But just as tiebreakers taketh away, they giveth as well. Palais des Reines decisively despatched both Royal Mandrid and BK Magevskaya home and away, being in good position to secure a trip to the Palacio de Reino de Hispinas with a game to spare. However, the visiting contingent in Valanari visibly looked nervous after losing by ten points. In fact, it took an extremely confused Highlanders side pointing out the head-to-head tiebreakers for Palais to realise they were through no matter what happened in Mytanija (a minor blowout, as it transpired).

Overall, for both Omerican representatives being down in Pot 4, it was a respectable showing in line with expectations that some called delusional. The surviving BasketLeague teams finished as the two best runners-up amongst all groups, though An Comhlathas would drop down two places in the seeding table to avoid an immediate rematch with Cloudsdale Warriors and a rematch between Rinaldi Golden Hurricane and Alexandropolis Lions.

Come the trip to Mandrid, An Comhlathas looked like deer in the headlights when facing the Golden Hurricane. The result of the match was at no point in any doubt, with Comhlathas looking increasingly disinteresting as they continued to lose in the classification tournament and finish rock bottom among the sixteen finalists. “We were just tired and wanted to go home,” head coach Padraig Mac Giolla Cathair admitted. “Once we lost that first classification game, the drive just vanished.” When asked what it meant for the defending champions’ title defence, Mac Giolla Cathair had to admit “[i]t’s not a good sign for us. We have to make sure something similar doesn’t happen in BasketLeague qualifying or we might not even have a playoff. I’m definitely concerned.”

But for Palais des Reines… Cloudsdale Warriors very much looked like the worst of the group winners against BasketLeague’s greatest, but even the most optimistic of Charlescourters expected that to be the end of their team’s run: surely Chuckio Raiders were better than anyone BasketLeague had to offer. And yet Palais des Reines narrowly escaped with victory, but Košarka Esca would surely put them to the sword in the Final Four. And yet Palais des Reines narrowly escaped with victory again. There was a sneaking suspicion that PdR had been “found out” when the titleholders decisively demolished PdR in the final match, but the sensation estivale was no less hurt for the loss.

“It’s a dream finish,” Palais point guard Jacob Ballesdens declared after the match. “We may have lost the match, but this is a trip none of us will ever forget. Now what’s next is to get through BasketLeague with a qualifying spot so we can come back and do it all again.”

Northern Conference qualifying
Come the qualifying season, Padraig’s worst nightmare nearly came to life. After consecutive seasons where An Comhlathas won the Northern Conference’s worst division by 20+ games, Templemore impressively(!) finished just ten wins behind the defending Omerican champions. “There’s still more work to do,” head coach Mícheal Fólais declred, “but the aristocracy of BasketLeague looks weaker than ever. It’s only a matter of time before Comhlathas’s ‘birthright’ is taken from them and someone else wins the Eurus.”

But if it was a bad showing for An Comhlathas, it was total disaster in the Free State. After winning the conference two times running—decisively topping the Boreas both times—, Alconbury Knights’ luck finally ran out in their most competitive divisional contest yet. Capital Dragons shocked the league by finishing the season 5–1 in the run-in and on a four game winning run, coming within single digits of the northern powerhouses and sealing the divisional race for Revolutionaries with a narrow 87–86 victory against the Knights on the penultimate matchday.

That left plenty of room for the Armoury to win the conference, despite putting up their worst season to date. In fact, La Corona held a two-game lead at the top of the Caurus going into the final phase of the season, but suffered a late collapse to finish as divisional and conference runners-up. “It’s quite funny how we just stumbled upward,” centre Colman Faulkner stated in a twii thread. “There was this fear in the changing room that we might slip off the top of the division if we kept this up, but clearly that was misguided!”

“We had it in our hands,” La Corona head coach Sara Fletcher admitted. “You can excel in your interconference games, slay in your intraconference games, but those last six fixtures will get you. The divisional run-in is absolutely the most difficult part of the season and we fluffed it.”

Southern Conference qualifying
As the old saying goes, “only three things are certain in life: death, taxes and Palais des Reines laying waste to BasketLeague.” In stark contrast to their anglophone counterparts, the IUBC Trophy emboldened Palais des Reines, who simply blew the rest of BasketLeague out of the water over the course of qualifying. “Losing to the Monarchs always seems to light a fire up our arses,” a Palais spokesperson “How else can you explain losing just 23 qualifying games over the last two seasons?”

Of course, the continued domination of Palais—a team who average only about a dozen defeats per qualifying—and the solidification of divisions as “mini-fiefdoms” for certain teams has given rise to much grumbling.

“I’m very happy to see us back in the playoffs,” Malavan head coach Simon Milhaud proclaimed in an interview with Radio-Télévision Nationale after his team secured a top-four position in the conference, “but it looks like almost the same teams again. You wouldn’t get this in any other sport. I think it’s the closed system that is to blame. Queensferry, Esmeralda, Berry would be relegated in any other sport, but Basketball Omerica don’t want that. They want those florins coming in from Northavon, from the Emerald Isles, from East Calaverde and there’s no incentive to perform as a result. What’s the use if you’re always safe, if you never drop? It’s a joke.”

Of course, Milhaud was not to know of Doublonville’s collapse in the Zephyr. After finishing as divisional runners-up and making back-to-back playoff appearances in the previous two seasons, the Alleosian team fell out of contention for a playoff spot long before Milhaud’s RTN interview and only secured a winning record on the penultimate matchday. “I think Simon is absolutely right to point out that we have a competitiveness problem,” interim head coach Lucas Beaulieu told STN after the Doublonville–Berry match that secured his side a winning record, “but there is still quite a bit happening under the surface. Basketball Omerica have to make some serious changes to support the weaker teams, but the potential for a full-scale revolution is there. Our result and the misfortune of Alconbury are proof of that.”

BasketLeague Playoffs and Finals
Their woes in the qualifying season were extending into the playoffs, it was said. After conclusively losing the first two games in Christiana, the Knights had to be flawless throughout the rest of the series and—by the grace of God—just about managed it. “We all knew what was at stake,” Faulkner recalled after the series. “If we lost a single game, our perfect streak of finals qualifications was over. We had to get out of this playoff alive, if only for our honour and we just about managed. If one or two things flipped the other way, it would have been so much different, but we managed.” An Comhlathas winning BasketLeague it was not, but a great escape it most assuredly was regardless.

But if the playoff made Alconbury look better, it made Serenitas look worse. Despite Malavan’s epic recovery to enter the playoffs, Serenitas were solid favourites to advance and expected not to take more than four games at max to qualify. “We didn’t have a great qualifying performance,” one team member anonymously told SFRD, “but we there was no way we were losing twice, let alone thrice.” But a doggedly determined Romainbourgeois team made Serenitas work for a finals berth, winning the opening game of the series in Saint-Christophe and successfully staying alive after consecutive defeats, only to fall at the final hurdle.

The Curse of the Conference Winners reared its ugly head once again. The defending champions might have been troubled, but they were the champions for a bloody reason and demonstrated why in a series of four hard-fought wins, forcing out a stunned Rockingham in overtime. As for Palais des Reines, their “inexorable march” proved very exorable indeed, troubled over virtually every game and collapsing into a mess after narrowly defeating Avonnais 95–92, losing the next game by a miserable 24 points and finally despatched after just six games.

For the playoff victors, roles decisively reversed. After recovering some pride against La Corona and splitting the first four games with Revolutionaries, the Knights suffered a dramatic collapse in Game 5—saved from a 30+ point defeat only by the grace of a miserable free throw—and were left looking shell-shocked in their Game 6 exit. Serenitas, on the other hand, bounced back from consecutive defeats in Romainbourg to put out a second Apeliote side in six games and firmly demonstrate their Grand Finals appearance last season was no fluke indeed.

And yet all good things must come to an end. In a sick call-back, the new Boreas winners raced out to a three-game lead over An Comhlathas, prompting questions of “can they do it again?” No, they could not. Despite the titleholders winning the next two games, Revolutionaries simply refused to throw away their lead and extinguished An Comhlathas’s hopes at the first mention of “remontée”.

Serenitas? They had “the easiest semifinal” in BasketLeague history, what with facing a 40-win team and all. Game 1 went well. Game 2, though, was rough. Game 3 was where they officially fell behind. Game 4 had some bickering about arcane rules in the Kalactinian rulebook, but levelled the series once more. Game 5, Serenitas was back in the lead. Game 6, Serenitas was smashed again. Game 7: game over. Avonnais Gaulois were in the Grand Finals, despite having won fewer than 50 games all season.

One of the closest cross-conference pairings in BasketLeague, the Battle of the Avon promised to be intense. Revolutionaries representing the “Birthplace of Independence” and Eastavonian metropolis Falconbarrow, versus Avonnais Gaulois from the Westavonian capital Brétolles. Centuries of history in the river valley all condensed into one best-of-seven series for the Omerican basketball crown.

And Avonnais Gaulois laid absolute waste to their rivals east of the river… Just like An Comhlathas before them, Gaulois were not supposed to be here. Hailing from the absolute worst division BasketLeague had to offer, Palais or Serenitas should have easily tore into them, but Gaulois survived. Revolutionaries? Child’s play in comparison.

For only the fourth time in history and the first time in the Grand Finals(!), it was a sweep. And this time it was accomplished by the worst divisional winners in the brief history of BasketLeague, who barely squeaked into the Finals with a winning record. In the words of SFRD’s chief basketball correspondent: “You start to question what might happen if more teams were actually good.”

at L'Arc-en-Ciel in Quebec City, Quebec & Shingoryeo
California City Lakers (QUE) 75–59 Crystal Springs Stars (CRY)

The California City Lakers made it look far too easy. Playing on home soil, the Lakers defeated the three-time champion Seaddle Subsonics in the quarterfinals and the two-time champion Valanari Highlanders in the semifinals before dispatching the Crystal Springs Stars in the final to claim their first ever IUBC Trophy. In doing so, the Quebecois club became the first team not from the Royal Equestrian Basketball League, Elven Basketball Association, or Liga Superior de Baloncesto to win the title since Ceni's Cenial Phoenix won all the way back in IUBC XI.

Ranks, additional notes, and next season guidelines will be posted soon. Stay tuned for updates.

Nation and Team Coefficients are now available for viewing.

Guidelines for Entry in IUBC XXIV
  • Each nation is entitled to three entries, with their champion listed first. Please follow the format for submission in the OP.
  • California City Lakers (QUE) automatically qualify for the group stages of the IUBC Trophy. If they qualify as the league champions of Quebec & Shingoryeo, the group stage spot for the league champions will be vacated.
  • Multiassociational leagues are entitled to six entries, with at most four from one nation.

Hosting the Playoffs
  • Participating nations are entitled to bid for hosting the playoffs of the IUBC Trophy. Please follow the details in the OP. Further detail is strongly encouraged.
  • As the host of the previous edition's playoffs, Quebec & Shingoryeo will not be eligible to bid for the hosting of the playoffs.
  • Bidding nations are reminded that their submitted bid will not only host the final four but the entire playoffs including the classification games.
  • If there are no bids received, the host venue will be defaulted to Celestial Gardens in Canterlot, Equestria.

The deadline for entries for the twenty-fourth edition of the IUBC will be announced at a later date.

The season ended with the exact same ranking as before, what led to a further loss in viewers and fans interest. That the champion was always the same already angered the people, now seeing no suprises at all, let the people down even more.
"We have to modify the system, to make the league more interesting. We will have future changes to make the league more attractive", promised the CEO of the league. It must be doubted that the champion and pet club of the Nations all-time President will be affected by this.

IUBC Trophy: MaxCap Stadium, T.V. City (68,000)

An epicenter to basketball and other AC-dwelling sports in the land of cats, "The Cap" serves as the largest indoor stadium in the nation. Aside from its impressive capacity, the stadium offers numerous amenities exclusively catered to the tastes of fans near and far. Wanna watch the game from the multiverse's only permanent Feasties' restaurant? You got it! Wanna bet on matches for a chance to win a trip to exotic Sylestone? MaxCap's gotcha covered! We could go on and on about the other stuff here, but we'd rather keep this short for the sake of you time-huggin' officials.

In addition to being a primary venue for Qasden expendentures in the IBC (including hosting the Championship series of IBC 23), The Cap also permanently homes two, top-tier domestic teams during the League of Hoops & Extraordinary Orange Things (The TVC Tabbies and Titans, respectively). Of course, the area surrounding the stadium can be just as exciting. Turkish Van City (known professionally as T.V. City) has a thriving basketball community, split between the 5 fanbases that occupy the metropolis. Being the largest settlement in all of Qasden, the region is known for being a hub of extraordinary entertainment and pizazz, a home to everything from plays to movies, games to museums. Multi-culturalism is also huge in TVC, so even with its seemingly crowded basketball field, it's not an uncommon site to see random Qads cheer on foreign teams during the playoffs. With calm morning showers and cats for every human and neko, who wouldn't want to come here! (Disclaimer: you will absolutely suffer here if you have a cat allergy or like sunny days)

Thank you for your consideration of a feline-filled finale for the 24th IUBC right here in T.V. City. It's been some time since the international orange sphere scene showed back up here, so we'd be thrilled to take it all back to the Cap like the good ol' times!

2032-33 Pridnestrovian Basketball Super League

Postby Trans-Dniesters » Thu Jan 27, 2022 1:25 am

Time can be such a strange thing in the multiverse. Sometimes it flows smoothly, sometimes it ebbs and backs up and before you know it, what had seemed like only one year in your own place was actually several years outside of your little corner of the multiverse. In the case of both the Pridnestrovian Basketball Super League (PBSL) and the Fleftic Basketball Association (FBA), the 2032-33 season passed without incident, but upon entering their respective representatives for the IUBC Trophy, both associations were surprised to learn that two editions of the IUBC Trophy had already been held during that time, and that instead of the 22nd IUBC Trophy, they were now about to enter the 24th edition of said tournament. But both associations were soon able to get past that little thing and registered their clubs for the IUBC Trophy without fail. Here is the Pridnestrovian representatives to the 24th IUBC Trophy.

18 Yeralenko Yaks 34 6 28 2237 2727 −490 18 Relegated to Basketball Second Division

BC Radomedix Dnistrosh and Zheleznogorsk Bears are promoted from the Pridnestrovian Basketball Second Division to the Pridnestrovian Basketball Super League.

Fans of the Bratsk Buccaneers would like to say that they always believed in their team, and that they had always had the regular season championship under lock and key for most of the regular season. That wasn't always the case though. Bratsk had a few close calls in the last few days of the regular season, and at one time CSKA Tiraspol's basketball team actually managed to overtake them for an entire match week, but the Buccaneers immediately corrected the course of their ship by winning against the aforementioned Army Club team to regain top spot, and once they got back on top, the team from Bratsk never let it go. The final ranking may have had to be settled through goal difference, but to fans of Bratsk, the way by which they got the regular season title doesn't make an ounce of difference. A championship is a championship.

Bacardi Derinkuyu's grand return to the Basketball Super League wasn't the best, but at least they weren't relegated right back down to the Basketball Second Division. The eight seasons that they spent down in the second tier of Pridnestrovian basketball was more than enough for the fans of this side, and while their regular season record is most certainly not something to be proud of, at the very least they're not plum last. The same couldn't be said for the other team that came up with the Bats from the Second Division. The Yeralenko Yaks have been in the Basketball Super League a few times already, but each and every single time that they've played in the PBSL, they were immediately relegated in the season after. And this season is no different. The frustration felt by the fans was palpable almost right at the first game the Yaks played. They know that they don't expect their team to challenge for the title or even just the playoffs just yet, but they are getting tired of yoyoing in between the divisions. Find a division that the team likes and stick to it, whether it's the Super League or the Second Division. Meanwhile, Radomedix Dnistrosh makes an immediate return to the Basketball Super League for next season, and this time they will be accompanied by another PBSL newcomer, the Zheleznogorsk Bears, based in the city of Zheleznogorsk, famous for being one of the sites where Pridnestrovia manufactured its nuclear weapons. Passing through the closed city cordons will certainly be an experience for the rest of the PBSL teams, that's for sure.

Congratulations to the Bratsk Buccaneers, your 2032-33 Pridnestrovian Basketball Super League regular season champions!

2032-33 PBSL Playoffs - Quarterfinals

(1) Bratsk Buccaneers vs. Dnistrolvovsk Loggers (8)

(4) BC Admiral Novorossiysk vs. Pridnestrovskaya Gavan Harbormasters (5)

(3) BC CSKA Tiraspol vs. Kesselburger Cagers (6)

(2) BC Dinamo Bender vs. Vladikarpaty Mountaineers (7)

Bratsk Buccaneers 101–57 Dnistrolvovsk Loggers
Dnistrolvovsk Loggers 84–53 Bratsk Buccaneers
Bratsk Buccaneers 90–68 Dnistrolvovsk Loggers
Dnistrolvovsk Loggers 66–85 Bratsk Buccaneers

Bratsk Buccaneers wins the series 3-1

Neither Bratsk nor Dnistrolvovsk are new to the whole playoffs experience, but that didn't mean that the players are still used to it. Bratsk, most of all, aren't used to being the top seed in the PBSL playoffs, but having just gone through the journey of securing the regular season title, it could also be said that they have the experience to see things through to the bitter end. Well, Bratsk did smash Dnistrolvovsk in Game 1, but the Loggers did return the favor in Game 2, thus showing the Buccaneers that they were not as invulnerable as they thought. The solution to this was simple and obvious: don't let Dnistrolvovsk win any more games. It's the quickest and easiest way to secure Bratsk's ticket to the semifinals and give them enough time to prepare for their next opponent. And, given the quality of their potential semifinals opponents, they'll certainly need all of it.

Admiral Novorossiysk 67–54 Pridnestrovskaya Gavan Harbormasters
Pridnestrovskaya Gavan Harbormasters 91–73 Admiral Novorossiysk
Admiral Novorossiysk 82–68 Pridnestrovskaya Gavan Harbormasters
Pridnestrovskaya Gavan Harbormasters 69–81 Admiral Novorossiysk

BC Admiral Novorossiysk wins the series 3-1

The rise of the Pridnestrovskaya Gavan Harbormasters through the ranks of Pridnestrovian basketball has been nothing but meteoric. After spending almost all of their history in the semi-amateur regional third tier of Pridnestrovian basketball, the team was brought under new management. The Harbormasters turned professional, were promoted to the Basketball Second Division, and after years of working towards the top, have become playoff fixtures in the PBSL. Sometimes, Prigava have been lucky to make it to the finals, but other times, they get knocked out in the first round. This time was one of those times. Admiral Novorossiysk are always going to be a tough opponent for the Harbormasters, and given that this is also a rivalry series between the two biggest naval bases in Pridnestrovia, it's no surprise that both sides wanted to get the series win so that they can rub it in the faces of the losing team. Unfortunately for Prigava though, they are the aforementioned losing team, and it's fair to say that they didn't really have a chance against this revitalized Admiral team. Better luck next season, Harbormasters.

CSKA Tiraspol 90–61 Kesselburger Cagers
Kesselburger Cagers 60–72 CSKA Tiraspol
CSKA Tiraspol 83–81 Kesselburger Cagers

BC CSKA Tiraspol wins the series 3-0

There used to be a time when the Kesselburger Cagers were the best basketball team in Pridnestrovia. They were and still are the only team in the playoffs era of the PBSL to have won three consecutive championships, the mythical so-called three-peat. But after Kesselburg were unable to hang on to that core of players that took them to the summit, they've fallen on hard times. Sometimes they make the playoffs, and other times they don't. This season, they were able to make the playoffs, but beating their opponents is going to be a tough ask. Not only are CSKA Tiraspol's basketball team one of the best that Pridnestrovia has ever seen, but they're also looking for redemption after they were beaten on the biggest stage last season by their eternal rivals Dinamo Bender. The Army Club want to go back to the big stage, and they want to take their revenge on Dinamo. And they're not about to let the only team in Pridnestrovia to win a basketball three-peat stop them.

Dinamo Bender 67–79 Vladikarpaty Mountaineers
Vladikarpaty Mountaineers 62–64 Dinamo Bender
Dinamo Bender 74–76 Vladikarpaty Mountaineers
Vladikarpaty Mountaineers 76–83 Dinamo Bender
Dinamo Bender 70–78 Vladikarpaty Mountaineers

Vladikarpaty Mountaineers wins the series 3-2

Speaking of Dinamo Bender, this was supposed to be an easy title defense for them. They may not have gotten the regular season championship once again, but as the second seed against seventh placed Vladikarpaty, this was supposed to be an easy matchup for Bender. But somebody forgot to tell that to the Mountaineers. Vladikarpaty just want to play basketball. They don't care about honor or rivalries or that kind of thing. The most important thing to them is that they they're playing basketball. And because of that attitude, which forced Dinamo into reacting at every other game, the team from Bender were always on the back, and they don't do well when they do that. So this is how the defending PBSL champions crash out of the playoffs, 3-2 against a team that just wanted to play ball. It could have been more dramatic than this, but perhaps for Dinamo's sake, they just kept things on the down low. There's always next year anyway.

2032-33 PBSL Playoffs - Semifinals

(1) Bratsk Buccaneers vs. BC Admiral Novorossiysk (4)

(3) BC CSKA Tiraspol vs. Vladikarpaty Mountaineers (7)

Bratsk Buccaneers 69–76 Admiral Novorossiysk
Admiral Novorossiysk 74–48 Bratsk Buccaneers
Bratsk Buccaneers 83–67 Admiral Novorossiysk
Admiral Novorossiysk 62–81 Bratsk Buccaneers
Bratsk Buccaneers 82–96 Admiral Novorossiysk

BC Admiral Novorossiysk wins the series 3-2

So much for Bratsk taking advantage of this golden opportunity. This was perhaps the Buccaneers' biggest chance of making it to the PBSL Finals, and they blew it. What reason was there for them to fear Admiral Novorossiysk? Nothing. It's not like they were rivals and victory in this series would be something that the winning team could rub into the faces of the losing team, But for some reason, Bratsk didn't play like their usual selves in this series, and it could very well have been what cost them the whole thing. Thanks to the Buccaneers playing more cautiously than usual, Admiral were able to get a quick 2-0 series advantage, and while Bratsk got their shit together and won the next two games to force the decisive Game 5, it was too little too late. Admiral ran circles around the Buccaneers and forced the regular season champions to chase shadows, and when the final buzzer sounded, the Navy Team had won the game and the series by 14 points.

CSKA Tiraspol 92–66 Vladikarpaty Mountaineers
Vladikarpaty Mountaineers 55–84 CSKA Tiraspol
CSKA Tiraspol 97–76 Vladikarpaty Mountaineers

BC CSKA Tiraspol wins the series 3-0

It's the end of the road for the Vladikarpaty Mountaineers. It was a nice ride while it lasted, but now it was time for them to get off of the playoffs train. It wasn't that hard to kick them out though, especially given that their opponents were none other than CSKA Tiraspol. The Army Club's quest to avenge last season's defeat in the PBSL playoff finals continues, and while Dinamo Bender are no longer in the playoffs (all thanks to the very same team that CSKA had just eliminated), CSKA won't care a single bit about that. All that's important to them at this stage is winning the championship. Poor Vladikarpaty though. They may have been prepared for a good long fight against CSKA but the Army Club simply never gave them the chance to actually fight. As was previously mentioned, nothing else matters to CSKA except the championship. Everything else is only an obstacle to achieving the goal.

2032-33 PBSL Finals

(3) BC CSKA Tiraspol vs. BC Admiral Novorossiysk (4)

CSKA Tiraspol 84–69 Admiral Novorossiysk
Admiral Novorossiysk 58–90 CSKA Tiraspol
CSKA Tiraspol 72–79 Admiral Novorossiysk
Admiral Novorossiysk 72–78 CSKA Tiraspol

BC CSKA Tiraspol wins the series 3-1

The Army Club just will not be stopped. That defeat to Dinamo Bender in the finals must have really stung, or else they would have actually tried to give their Navy rivals a chance to make an interesting series out of the 2033 PBSL Finals. Instead, what Pridnestrovian basketball fans got was an utter beatdown where Admiral only barely had the chance to get a word in before CSKA put them right back in their place. Admiral knew that Game 4 was their best chance of forcing a decisive final game in this series, and though they came very close to getting it done, in the end, CSKA were just too strong and too determined to win the championship. They had been down this road before last season. The Army Club let their eternal rivals win Games 3 and 4 after CSKA had won the first two games, and that had been the Army Club's downfall last season. Not this season though. They had learned their lesson and made sure that they would be victorious in Game 4 in order to eliminate any possibility of missing out on the title once again. And because of this, CSKA will be back in the IUBC Trophy once again, and this time they hope to make an actual impact in the competition beyond just the group stage or the round of 16.

Tjorlish Basketball Association 2021-22 Season

The 2021-22 season of the Tjorlish Basketball Association (TBA) was not short of entertainment. Lots of triumphs, heartbreaks, and intense rivalries headlined the '21-'22 season. Not only were the teams competing for the coveted Krüger Trophy, they were also fighting for the qualification slots for the 24th IUBC Tournament. This is the first time any Tjorlish team is going to compete in the prestigious international domestic club competition since its 16th edition, which ended terribly for the Tjorlish teams, none of which made the playoffs, which was held at the famous Ivan Arena, in Tjorlish capital Kjol. However, lots of training and preparation were done in the offseason to try and help the teams get past the group stage. This is how the Tjorlish representatives in the 24th edition of the IUBC Tournament qualified.

In the Northern Conference, the Tjusto Troopers dominated the pack, tying the league-best 70 wins, only 3 wins away from the legendary 73-9 record of the 2015-16 Afoln Rangers. Playoff regulars Seidelberg, Volanger, Czujon, and Longyearbyen have also made it to the playoffs. Previously a ninth seed, the Konunsfjord Royals sneaked into the playoffs, only 2 games ahead of the Rasand Beasts. Harvik's 16-6 record in the final 22 games pushed them into the sixth seed. Faustmark was the surprise of the conference; after finsihing a lowly 14th last season, they have regained their footing and vaulted themselves into the top 4.

Meanwhile, in the Southern Conference, Kjol prevailed over fierce rivals Afoln, winning 70 games, with Afoln only 3 games behind. Vestrageid's 8-game defeat streak led to them being eliminated, with Veithsen leaping over them into 8th. Skarlagen put on yet another great regular season, winning 64 games compared to last season's 58. Surprisingly, last season's conference finalist Borsheim finished 12th, a far cry from their 59 wins in the 2020-21 season.

NORTHERN CONFERENCE
Tjusto (1) v Konunsfjord (8)
Tjusto Troopers 94–72 Konunsfjord Royals (TJU 1-0)
Tjusto Troopers 84–79 Konunsfjord Royals (TJU 2-0)
Konunsfjord Royals 83–74 Tjusto Troopers (TJU 2-1)
Konunsfjord Royals 60–71 Tjusto Troopers (TJU 3-1)
Tjusto Troopers 122–55 Konunsfjord Royals (TJU 4-1)
Tjusto wins 4-1!

Tjusto made quick work of Konunsfjord, defeating them in 5 games. Tjusto's offense just seemed too much for the Royals, who lost by an average margin of 19.2 points per game. Despite their surprise win, they quickly fell apart in the next two games. Tjusto absolutely demolished Konunsfjord in Game 5, winning by a whopping 67 points.

Seidelberg (2) v Longyearbyen (7)
Seidelberg Sparrows 85–82 Longyearbyen Stallions (SEI 1-0)
Seidelberg Sparrows 91–77 Longyearbyen Stallions (SEI 2-0)
Longyearbyen Stallions 74–89 Seidelberg Sparrows (SEI 3-0)
Longyearbyen Stallions 69–84 Seidelberg Sparrows (SEI 4-0)
Seidelberg wins 4-0!

Seidelberg swept the Stallions, comfortably winning in most of the games. Game 1 was an unforgettable battle, with both teams trading buckets. Ultimately, Seidelberg came out on top with a 3 point buzzer beater. After Game 1, Seidelberg dominated Longyearbyen, and quickly proved their worth as they moved on to the second round.

Volanger (3) v Harvik (6)
Volanger Valkyries 80–73 Harvik Hunters (VOL 1-0)
Volanger Valkyries 72–76 Harvik Hunters (Tied 1-1)
Harvik Hunters 70–77 Volanger Valkyries (VOL 2-1)
Harvik Hunters 92–71 Volanger Valkyries (Tied 2-2)
Volanger Valkyries 67–83 Harvik Hunters (HAR 3-2)
Harvik Hunters 79–83 Volanger Valkyries (Tied 3-3)
Volanger Valkyries 84–68 Harvik Hunters (VOL 4-3)
Volanger wins 4-3!

This season's battle between the 3rd and 6th seed of the Northern Conference was one to watch. Volanger and Harvik kept trading games, but Volanger was the victor in this match-up. The highlight of this battle was Game 6, in which Volanger came back from a 26-point deficit to win by 4 and tie the series 3-3. This would turn the tides in their favor, and the Valkyries won comfortably in Game 7.

Faustmark (4) v Czujon (5)
Faustmark Forgers 87–74 Czujon Colonels (FAU 1-0)
Faustmark Forgers 91–83 Czujon Colonels (FAU 2-0)
Czujon Colonels 71–65 Faustmark Forgers (FAU 2-1)
Czujon Colonels 79–68 Faustmark Forgers (Tied 2-2)
Faustmark Forgers 83–92 Czujon Colonels (CZU 3-2)
Czujon Colonels 95–98 Faustmark Forgers (Tied 3-3)
Faustmark Forgers 80–101 Czujon Colonels (CZU 4-3)
Czujon wins 4-3!

While the final result of 4-3 seems to show an intense battle between Faustmark and Czujon, the final scores tell a different truth. Only 2 of the 7 games ended in a single-digit gap between the teams. Despite winning the first two games at home, Faustmark bottled their lead in Czujon, who came back and later took the lead in Game 5. Despite a spirited effort in Game 6, Faustmark, and their Cinderella story, collapsed in Game 7.

SOUTHERN CONFERENCE
Kjol (1) v Veithsen (8)
Kjol Knights 83–64 Veithsen Strikers (KJO 1-0)
Kjol Knights 89–94 Veithsen Strikers (Tied 1-1)
Veithsen Strikers 84–86 Kjol Knights (KJO 2-1)
Veithsen Strikers 68–85 Kjol Knights (KJO 3-1)
Kjol Knights 92–57 Veithsen Strikers (KJO 4-1)
Kjol wins 4-1!

Much like in the Northern Conference, the number one seed made quick work of the number eight seed, with Kjol defeating Veithsen in 5 games. However, Veithsen did have some strong showings, pushing the Knights to the limit in Games 2 and 3. However, the 70-win team was too strong in Games 4 and 5, sealing their place in the next round.

Afoln (2) v Bergimmel (7)
Afoln Rangers 77–61 Bergimmel Blizzard (AFO 1-0)
Afoln Rangers 73–71 Bergimmel Blizzard (AFO 2-0)
Bergimmel Blizzard 57–96 Afoln Rangers (AFO 3-0)
Bergimmel Blizzard 62–71 Afoln Rangers (AFO 4-0)
Afoln wins 4-0!

Yet another quick match-up, Afoln was fast to eliminate the Blizzard, sweeping them. The closest Bergimmel got was in Game 2, where the Blizzard's possible game winner went in and out, resulting in a 73-71 victory for the Rangers, who carried the momentum all the way to Game 4. Afoln is looking to challenge for this year's Krüger Trophy, after their painful loss in 2019.

Allum (3) v Neuberg (6)
Allum Cougars 81–66 Neuberg Blades (ALL 1-0)
Allum Cougars 92–83 Neuberg Blades (Tied 1-1)
Neuberg Blades 76–66 Allum Cougars (NEU 2-1)
Neuberg Blades 82–92 Allum Cougars (Tied 2-2)
Allum Cougars 101–73 Neuberg Blades (ALL 3-2)
Neuberg Blades 54–86 Allum Cougars (ALL 4-2)
Allum wins 4-2!

Allum and Neuberg went back and forth for the first four games, clobbering each other in alternating games. However, a fatal 36-10 run for the Cougars in Game 6 pushed them into a 3-2 lead. In the final game, Neuberg shot poorly, only 37%, en route to a mighty 86-54 triupmh for Allum, who will then face Afoln in the second round.

Skarlagen (4) v Rauchig (5)
Skarlagen Snow Leopards 90–62 Rauchig Behemoths (SKA 1-0)
Skarlagen Snow Leopards 84–86 Rauchig Behemoths (Tied 1-1)
Rauchig Behemoths 69–79 Skarlagen Snow Leopards (SKA 2-1)
Rauchig Behemoths 66–80 Skarlagen Snow Leopards (SKA 3-1)
Skarlagen Snow Leopards 72–64 Rauchig Behemoths (SKA 4-1)
Skarlagen wins 4-1!

Despite their strong regular season, Rauchig completely crumbled in the first round, losing in only 5 games. The Snow Leopards' tough defense succesfully neutralized the Behemoths' three-point shooting capabilities. After a disappointing playoffs, Rauchig's head coach Markos Bjornsen said "Yeah, after our regular season, we thought we had a big chance of progressing, but yeah, we probably got a bit too cocky."

NORTHERN CONFERENCE
Tjusto (1) v Czujon (5)
Tjusto Troopers 85–73 Czujon Colonels (TJU 1-0)
Tjusto Troopers 93–77 Czujon Colonels (TJU 2-0)
Czujon Colonels 57–76 Tjusto Troopers (TJU 3-0)
Czujon Colonels 64–73 Tjusto Troopers (TJU 4-0)
Tjusto wins 4-0!

The dominant Troopers took only 4 games to eliminate the Colonels. Czujon just couldn't do anything to stop Tjusto's rampage, losing by an average margin of 14 points per game. Tjusto's defense held the Colonels to an average of only 67.75 points per game. After this series, many consider the North's number one seed as the favorites to win the Krüger Trophy.

Seidelberg (2) v Volanger (3)
Seidelberg Sparrows 96–98 Volanger Valkyries (VOL 1-0)
Seidelberg Sparrows 86–84 Volanger Valkyries (Tied 1-1)
Volanger Valkyries 79-76 Seidelberg Sparrows (VOL 2-1)
Volanger Valkyries 77-78 Seidelberg Sparrows (Tied 2-2)
Seidelberg Sparrows 92–94 Volanger Valkyries (VOL 3-2)
Volanger Valkyries 77-79 Seidelberg Sparrows (Tied 3-3)
Seidelberg Sparrows 100–100 Volanger Valkyries (116–117 OT) (VOL 4-3)
Volanger wins 4-3!

After it concluded, the '21-'22 second round match-up between the Valkyries and the Sparrows was considered by many as the best TBA playoff series of all time. Every game of this intense series was decided by a game-winner, with an overtime Volanger Game 7 victory being the cherry on top of the cake.

SOUTHERN CONFERENCE
Kjol (1) v Skarlagen (4)
Kjol Knights 90–74 Skarlagen Snow Leopards (KJO 1-0)
Kjol Knights 79–83 Skarlagen Snow Leopards (Tied 1-1)
Skarlagen Snow Leopards 86-102 Kjol Knights (KJO 2-1)
Skarlagen Snow Leopards 65-77 Kjol Knights (KJO 3-1)
Kjol Knights 90–63 Skarlagen Snow Leopards (KJO 4-1)
Kjol wins 4-1!

Kjol won their second round match-up against the Skarlagen Snow Leopards in convincing fashion, much like their first round series. After Skarlagen stole Game 2 at Ivan Arena, Kjol showed no mercy for the Snow Leopards, winning in double digits in the last three games. The capital's team is also considered as a strong contender for the Krüger Trophy.

Afoln (2) v Allum (3)
Afoln Rangers 72–61 Allum Cougars (AFO 1-0)
Afoln Rangers 75–66 Allum Cougars (AFO 2-0)
Allum Cougars 76-89 Afoln Rangers (AFO 3-0)
Allum Cougars 62-73 Afoln Rangers (AFO 4-0)
Afoln wins 4-0!

Among all the debates about who will win the championship, Afoln has quietly gone under the radar the whole time. The Rangers gave no chance for the Cougars, winning all 4 games in formidable fashion. After Game 4, the Tjorlish record champions have finally reached the Southern Conference Finals after 4 years.

NORTHERN CONFERENCE FINALS
Tjusto (1) v Volanger (3)
Tjusto Troopers 74–69 Volanger Valkyries (TJU 1-0)
Tjusto Troopers 98–74 Volanger Valkyries (TJU 2-0)
Volanger Valkyries 64-86 Tjusto Troopers (TJU 2-1)
Volanger Valkyries 72-83 Tjusto Troopers (TJU 3-1)
Tjusto Troopers 67–67 Volanger Valkyries (74–75 OT) (TJU 3-2)
Volanger Valkyries 76-74 Tjusto Troopers (Tied 3-3)
Tjusto Troopers 86–84 Volanger Valkyries (TJU 4-3)
Tjusto wins 4-3!

Unfortunately, all great things must come to an end, and a painful example of this is the Volanger Valkyries' Cinderella story. Despite being defeated, they took the Troopers to the limit, taking them to 7 games. After nearly coming back from 3-1 down after a game winner in Game 5 and a clutch block in Game 6, Tjusto locked up Volanger's lethal offense in a final defensive stop in Game 7, sending the Troopers into the Finals for the second year in a row.

SOUTHERN CONFERENCE FINALS
Kjol (1) v Afoln (2)
Kjol Knights 67–93 Afoln Rangers (AFO 1-0)
Kjol Knights 89–74 Afoln Rangers (Tied 1-1)
Afoln Rangers 67-61 Kjol Knights (AFO 2-1)
Afoln Rangers 66-74 Kjol Knights (Tied 2-2)
Kjol Knights 68–96 Afoln Rangers (AFO 3-2)
Afoln Rangers 77-85 Kjol Knights (Tied 3-3)
Kjol Knights 79–83 Afoln Rangers (AFO 4-3)
Afoln wins 4-3!

Afoln shocked the Tjorlish sporting community after they defeated the 70-win Knights in 7 games. What's further surprising about this win is that the Rangers defeated Kjol by at least 25 points in Games 1 and 5, both home games for the Knights. The roar of the passionate Afoln fans could be heard for miles after the final buzzer sounded in Game 7.

THIRD IUBC SLOT DETERMINER
Kjol (1) v Volanger (3)
Kjol Knights 79–65 Volanger Valkyries (KJO 1-0)
Kjol Knights 68–76 Volanger Valkyries (Tied 1-1)
Volanger Valkyries 63-84 Kjol Knights (KJO 2-1)
Volanger Valkyries 68-83 Kjol Knights (KJO 3-1)
Kjol Knights 79–83 Volanger Valkyries (KJO 3-2)
Kjol Knights 95-68 Volanger Valkyries (KJO 4-2)
Kjol wins 4-2!

The conference final losers went head-to-head in a best-of-7 series to determine which of the two will qualify for the prestigious IUBC Tournament. The team that advanced was Kjol, triumphing over Volanger in 6 games. After that humiliating defeat in the conference finals, the Knights were looking to salvage some sort of pride, which they did in tenacious fashion.

FINALS
Tjusto (1) v Afoln (2)
Tjusto Troopers 81–87 Afoln Rangers (AFO 1-0)
Tjusto Troopers 70–82 Afoln Rangers (AFO 2-0)
Afoln Rangers 79-85 Tjusto Troopers (AFO 2-1)
Afoln Rangers 76-82 Tjusto Troopers (Tied 2-2)
Tjusto Troopers 79–79 Afoln Rangers (88–89 OT) (AFO 3-2)
Afoln Rangers 82-84 Tjusto Troopers (Tied 3-3)
Tjusto Troopers 94–94 Afoln Rangers (111–103 OT) (TJU 4-3)
Tjusto wins 4-3!

The Tjusto Troopers are the 2021-22 TBA Champions!

The final games of the amazing '21-'22 TBA season ended in fireworks for the Tjusto Troopers, who slugged it out against the Afoln Rangers in 7 games. After bottling the 2-0 lead, Afoln regained their footing in Game 5, winning by a single point in overtime. However, the Troopers won by a game-winning floater in Game 6, tying the series at 3-3. The final game also went into OT, yet Tjusto went into a quick 10-2 scoring run to seal the 2021-22 Championship, which also means they are back-to-back champions. The Rangers wouldn't go home without nothing, however, as they received a consolation prize of a qualifying slot for the illustrious IUBC Tournament.

Somehow grabbed second place in the 16th U18 World Cup, so that's cool. Football team is a bit wack, basketball team is doing better.

2032-33 FBA season

Postby Abanhfleft » Sun Jan 30, 2022 2:54 am

Time can be such a strange thing in the multiverse. Sometimes it flows smoothly, sometimes it ebbs and backs up and before you know it, what had seemed like only one year in your own place was actually several years outside of your little corner of the multiverse. In the case of both the Fleftic Basketball Association (FBA) and the Pridnestrovian Basketball Super League (PBSL), the 2032-33 season passed without incident, but upon entering their respective representatives for the IUBC Trophy, both associations were surprised to learn that two editions of the IUBC Trophy had already been held during that time, and that instead of the 22nd IUBC Trophy, they were now about to enter the 24th edition of said tournament. But both associations were soon able to get past that little thing and registered their clubs for the IUBC Trophy without fail. Here are the Fleftic representatives to the 24th IUBC Trophy.

The unprecedented rise of the Effelenendro Piranhas from the punching bag of the FBA to actual championship contenders continues on. In fact, it would appear that the Piranhas have now firmly dislodged Real Haritzaga Baloncesto from their position as the Northern Conference's best contender for the FBA Championship and put themselves on that pedestal. Effelenendro fans will be very happy that their team has now returned to relevance in Fleftic basketball, but they should also be cautioned to not become too excited at this outcome. It's one thing to be considered a contender; it's quite another to actually go out there and contend. The Piranhas were able to do it once before last season before they ultimately fell against Hayden Dorola's Mereilles Port Boys, but can they survive the gauntlet of the FBA playoffs once again and potentially set up another meeting with the defending champions for a grudge match? That remains to be seen.

Over in the Southern Conference, the Uranium City Nukes have retaken the top spot in the conference after they lost it to the now-defending FBA champions last season due to their inferior head-to-head record against Mereilles. Jazz Higgs is getting long in the tooth now, and while he may have finally achieved every Fleftic boy's childhood dream (and tripled it even with that three-peat), there's really nothing stopping him from winning yet another title with his hometown team. Nothing, of course, except for the other teams in the playoffs who are looking to spoil the parties of the big boys and make a name for themselves. The 2027 FBA champions Wanda Island Wizards are right in the mix, and the Tentenaraya Thunder will want to get back into the FBA Finals after an absence of almost three decades. Oh, and the less said about the Releinthi Chiefs' season, the better for their fans. Of course they weren't tanking just to get a better chance in next season's draft. Don't be silly.

The shift from international rules to Kalactinian rules basketball has been a godsend for the points-hungry fandom that is the people of Abanhfleft. There had been those who were understandably concerned that the extension of the quarter time by two minutes, the lengthening of the court and the shifting backward of the three-point line would be a detriment to the Democratic Republic's number one sport, but those concerns were revealed to be unfounded in the end. Instead, Kalactinian rules basketball finally delivered the entertainment that the Fleftic people had been asking for but had never gotten until now. And nowhere is this more evident than in the series between the Effelenendro Piranhas and the Bytuch Wyk SaberTigers. The first two games of this series was like a never-ending barrage of baskets, splashes, and dunks. Game 1 of the Effelenendro-Bytuch Wyk series had a combined score of 269, officially making it the highest-scoring playoff game in the history of the FBA, at least until Game 2 of the series between the Uranium City Nukes and the Wappinger Steam, but we'll get to that later. The important thing to know is that this season's playoffs will become known for the records that were broken, and also for the efficiency that some sides showed with regards to advancing to the next round. Effelenendro dealt with the SaberTigers in five games, while the Pilken Mammoths only needed four to take care of the Sfax Scream. The same couldn't be said for Real Haritzaga Baloncesto however, who needed six games to knock the Dorfdifving Steel out of the competition. And can someone check if the Markovsky Red Army have suddenly got their hands on a time machine? Because that's the only explanation for why they managed to turn back the clock and beat the Mykorrigan MonStars for a spot in the conference semifinals despite being only the seventh seed. Now that's something that the Newton Isaacs-era Red Army can (and sometimes did) pull.

Remember that time when Game 1 of the Effelenendro-Bytuch Wyk series in the Northern Conference set a new record for the highest combined score in the playoffs with 269 points? Well, Game 2 of the Uranium City-Wappinger series not only broke that record within a few nights, but also exceeded it by 19 points. That 140-148 game (which was won by Wappinger, by the way) will probably remain as the benchmark for highest scoring game in the history of the FBA, and it was also a microcosm for the series as a whole: the momentum was always swinging from one team to another, and neither team could hold much of an advantage until the end. However, the game itself and the series would end up having different outcomes: while the Wappinger Steam won the historic Game 2 of the series, it was the Uranium City Nukes that clinched the series-deciding Game 7 at the Antarctic Forum with what was by now a pedestrian 119-94 score. Strangely, or fittingly enough, that was the only series in the Southern Conference to require all seven games to reach a decision; the Wanda Island Wizards and the Bendy Benny Wildcats had wrapped up their respective series in only five games, and the defending champions Mereilles Port Boys needed only six games to eliminate the Vikrant Conquerors.

The memory of Newton Isaacs and his heroics can only carry the Markovsky Red Army so far. Isaacs' inspiration may have been enough for the Red Army to claim victory over the Mykorrigan MonStars, but it certainly wasn't against Real Haritzaga Baloncesto. The Royals made short work of the Soldiers over in the Fhulghamous Peninsula, and while Markovsky were able to claim one victory in the series at their place, Haritzaga ensured that it would be their one and only victory in the series. It was a way different story in the other bracket though as the Effelenendro Piranhas and the Pilken Mammoths truly duked it out for the honor of advancing to the conference finals. Effelenendro did look like they had the upper hand at the start of the series, winning the first three games and giving themselves what was surely an unassailable 3-0 series advantage over the Mammoths. And then Pilken turned the tables on the Piranhas and won the next three games to force the decisive Game 7 and potentially make history as the first FBA team in the Kalactinian rules era to win a series after going down 0-3. For their part, Effelenendro didn't want to make history as the first FBA team in the Kalactinian rules era to blow a 3-0 series lead, and luckily for them and their hopes of winning their first ever FBA title in the new millennium, the Piranhas actually managed to pull a lucky escape from the clutches of the Mammoths. Had Effelenendro lost this series, the FBA memelords would never allow them to ever live it down.

Letting a playoff series go all the way to seven games? Ain't nobody got time for that, or so the saying goes. And neither Uranium City nor Mereilles had the time to bother with letting their opponent win three games in their series. But really though, for Bendy Benny the biggest mistake that they could have ever made was winning a game at the Antarctic Forum. That certainly delivered a jolt to the system of the Nukes, and the team from Uranium City pretty much torched the Wildcats for four games straight. Meanwhile, Wanda Island and Mereilles just casually dropped the second-highest scoring game in the Kalactinian rules era of the FBA in Game 2 of their series, and much like the other bracket in the Southern Conference, the Wizards got the first win of the series, forcing the defending FBA champions to sit up, take notice, and take this title defense thing seriously. The lesson that everyone learned in the Southern Conference semifinals? Don't win the first game of the series or else you'll get four straight Ls.

On one hand, it seems pretty stupid to ignore the lessons learned during the conference semifinals, which is "never win Game 1 or else lose the next four games". But on the other hand, that seems pretty hard to go given that the playoffs needs to have a winner every single game, so by necessity someone must win Game 1. Real Haritzaga Baloncesto and the Mereilles Port Boys won Game 1 of their respective conference finals, and thus both of them lost the series as a whole. Mereilles had it real hard; they just barely edged out the Uranium City Nukes by two points in regulation, and their reward is indeed four straight losses. yeah, really, don't win a game at the Antarctic Forum in the playoffs unless you're the Uranium City Nukes. Haritzaga managed to stave off the inevitable by one more game, but because they blew the series after gaining a 2-0 lead, they will go down in history as the first team to do such a thing in the Kalactinian rules era. Not a record that the Royals would surely want in their books, but then again, who would?

Effelenendro Piranhas wins the 2033 FBA Finals 4-3

Thus we have the two protagonists for the 2033 FBA Finals. From the Northern Conference, the Effelenendro Piranhas, one of the championship contenders in the early years of the FBA and champions of 1955, 1959, and 1975 before falling on hard times and only bouncing back recently. From the Southern Conference, the Uranium City Nukes, one of the newest franchises in the league and also one of the most successful in the present day. The Piranhas are looking for their first ever FBA championship in almost 60 years, while the Nukes want to claim their fourth title in six years. Only one team will be able to achieve that dream, but who will that team be? Will only four games be enough to reveal the answer, or will it have to go all the way?

The answer to that question is yes, it will take all seven games before a champion could be declared for the 2032-33 FBA season, and that champions is the Effelenendro Piranhas. Never let it be said that they didn't work hard for this title; the Uranium City Nukes really made them prove that they were worthy of the honor. The Nukes for their part also gave it their all, but the results almost speak for themselves. Uranium City can no longer rely on Jazz Higgs to be their linchpin in both offense and defense; it's time for them to bring in new blood. That's what Effelenendro did, along with carefully biding their time and their opportunities, and look where it got them. They were denied by Hayden Dorola and his Port Boys last season, but this season the Effelenendro Piranhas cannot be stopped. Jazz Higgs and the Uranium City Nukes tried, and they failed, but at least they failed with honor and dignity, having put up a great fight in front of an entire nation. But there's little time for the Piranhas to rest on their laurels; there's still the IUBC Trophy to come. Not to mention that now the targets on their backs for the next FBA season, and they'll have to do everything they just did and more just to hang on to the Agapito Benzon Trophy.

Basketball is a popular sport in Mytanija, in terms of participation it is one of the stronger sports, with plenty of Mytanar kids playing street basketball in the infamous 'cages' found in many deprived areas in Mytanar cities when a football isn't being kicked around. The MKA Liga, Mytanija's top level of competition, lags behind other sports in terms of commercial revenue and television coverage which means it is often considered to be behind football (obviously) and volleyball in terms of popularity. The MKA (the Mytanar Basketball Association), is trying to change that by negotiating better contracts for the TV rights to show MKA Liga games. This could involve streamlining the current format of the league, with some feeling that 28 teams is too many and dilutes the quality of the league that is meant to represent the best basketball in Mytanija has to offer. Any change of format would likely be met with fierce opposition given the structure of many of the teams as part of wider sports clubs that participate in various sports (e.g. Atletik, Crvena Zvezda and Dinamo to name but a few), that are owned and run by their members and usually (except for their football sections), aren't especially profitable. Increased commercialisation would be seen as anathema to the very values of many of these teams that are run for their members and are quite principled regarding community involvement in their clubs and staying in touch with their roots.

Mytanar basketball is characterised by finesse and skilful play, with passing and sharing the ball being crucial to the way teams play. Even bigs will boast the ability to make difficult passes and make solid reads and court intelligence is one of the most important things in the Mytanar game. Generally there are not specific players that dominate the points per game statistic. It is arguably more of a team-oriented style and players will also change position and can be tasked with taking on multiple roles in a game. There's less isolation plays than in a lot of other countries and athleticism isn't as important either, although this is something which is gradually changing as Mytanar basketball enters the international arena. Mytanija's run to the last sixteen of the last International Basketball Championship demonstrated the improvement of the national team over the past few years, with the domestic game providing the entirety of that group of players. Many coaches had been fearful that the Mytanar style of play was moving away from its team-orientated roots, but this made a return in the IBC and was quite fruitful.

Atletik Thessia demonstrated their proficiency across sports by winning the MKA Liga Championship for the second time in the club's history. A young starting five made up of Uzejir Juric, the Licentian Joshua van den Pol, Besir Sijercic, Mario Djokanovic and Ahmed Nuhanovic demonstrated that basketball in Mytanija is increasingly becoming a young man's game. Their constant movement and rotational defensive schemes caused opponents problems at both ends of the court and their success was magnified by the fact that four of their starters went to the IBC with Mytanija and you can be sure Joshua van den Pol would have gone with the Licentian Isles had they qualified. The 91-74 win over Torpedo was fully deserved and Atletik were no flash in the pan either, they were hot all season, finishing second in the regular season and only by virtue of a slightly worse head-to-head point differential than BK Magevskaya. They were the best team in the league and got the title that warranted. This season there is an expectation that they will come again, challenged by Evgeny Fomin's BK Magevskaya and Zelimir Ateljevic's Košarka Esca. There will be no shortage of challengers behind them though: any of KK Avnalia, KK Miago, KK Rauchnya, NK Thessia or Zenit Esca could put a serious claim of being the league's best team in and it'd be hard to say they're wrong until we get a bit further into the campaign. We saw last season that a surprise package can get into shape in the play-offs and nearly become a true cinderella story, look out for Dinamo Esca, Padina Zolota, Litala ’93, Ribari Palilula or last season's cinderella Torpedo Vershina to try to pick up that baton this time around. Let's see what happened:

Košarka Esca and Zelimir Ateljevic were dominant during the regular season, dropping only eight games on their way to the #1 seed. We know all about Ateljevic at this point, he's a relentless scorer and this season was no different as he led that category from start to finish. Košarka Esca have a couple of ageing stars for whom this might be their final season, point guard Brajko Arsic is 38 and power forward Miran Grgurovic is 36, the pair were crucial in using their experience to help their team to wins. Trying to replace them will be difficult going forwards but given the pull Košarka Esca have as Mytanija's most successful basketball team you can be sure it won't be too difficult to sell the club to potential signings.

The rest of the top four is the same as last season, just in a slightly different order. Atletik remain second, showing why they were champions and playing as consistently as they did last season, they should take another #2 seed as a good omen heading into the play-offs. BK Magevskaya are #3, Evgeny Fomin was once again their star man and beaten only by Zelimir Ateljevic (who else would it be?) in regular season scoring. Fomin naturally headed up the rebounding charts and was near the top of the assist standings too. NK Thessia take the #4 spot and the final bye through to the second round of the play-offs, they're only two wins worse off than they were last season and will want a better showing than their second round exit at the hands of eventual finalists Torpedo this time around.

KK Rauchnya were in contention for a bye for much of the season, just fading away a little over the closing weeks of the regular season. This should be Albin Jausovec's last season, the 37 year old point guard isn't getting any younger but he is flanked by the excellent Antun Bevk and fast-improving small forward Mihailo Nosec in one of the more dangerous three-pronged attacks in the MKA Liga. There wasn't much to separate KK Avnalia, Zenit, Padina or Litala ’93 whilst KK Miago occupied something of a no-man's-land between that group and the pair of teams who managed to sneak into the play-offs in the closing weeks of the season: Dinamo Esca and the completely unfancied KK Prizren. A great achievement for the Vojovitican club. Torpedo, last season's finalists, miss out altogether along with Ribari who didn't break .500 for the season.

First Round
#5 KK Rauchnya 80–67 #12 KK Prizren
#6 KK Avnalia 75–96 #11 Dinamo
#7 Zenit 71–77 #10 KK Miago
#8 Padina 89–75 #9 Litala ’93

KK Rauchnya were a couple of classes above KK Prizren during the regular season and very few thought an upset would be possible when the two met in the play-offs, those assumptions were proven correct as the Rauchik team eased away during the second-half with a run of 12 unanswered points which would pretty much be the gap between the teams come the end of the game. KK Prizren were a great story this season, beating out more established opponents like Torpedo and Ribari just to get into the play-offs and fans and pundits alike would like to see more teams able to do that going forwards. Improving the depth of the league is of crucial importance if the national team is to keep improving.

Second Round
#1 Košarka Esca 87–83 #11 Dinamo
#2 Atletik 66–76 #10 KK Miago
#3 BK Magevskaya 78–75 #8 Padina
#4 NK Thessia 75–80 #5 KK Rauchnya

An Esca derby isn't the easiest way to get your play-off run started, even if it is against the #11 seeds and Košarka Esca were given a really tough time of it against their capital rivals. Zelimir Ateljevic did what he does best, taking over the game down the stretch and steering his team mates to an important victory. The form he has been in this season might well justify another championship and if he can take over the remaining play-off games it might take a star of a similar stature (cough, Evgeny Fomin, cough) to stop him. Last season's champions Atletik had a potentially tricky tie against KK Miago to negotiate and they could not do it! The trickiness of KK Miago is how horrible they are to play against, they are defensively excellent and they slowed Atletik right down in a way nobody could last season. Licentian point guard Adam Rankin gave Uzejir Juric a torrid time whilst Zdenko Nimac led the game scoring with 26 points including 4/4 from behind the arc.

BK Magevskaya kept their hopes alive with a tight win over a determined Padina Zolota team. Evgeny Fomin was in similar form to Zelimir Ateljevic and everybody is already talking up the chances of another meeting in the MKA Liga Championship game as happened in the 29/30 season in what was probably the greatest title game in Mytanar basketball history. Finally KK Rauchnya punched their ticket to the final four by overturning a two point deficit with two minutes left on the clock, scoring seven unanswered points and locking NK Thessia out down the stretch. A great victory for the Rauchik club and Albin Jausovec keeps alive his hopes of a second title at the age of 37.

Semi Finals
#1 Košarka Esca 75–70 #10 KK Miago
#3 BK Magevskaya 83–60 #5 KK Rauchnya

Košarka Esca had been excellent throughout the regular season but during the play-offs they have ended up in some seriously close games. KK Miago once again kept things tight (or as tight as can be expected when you're playing Zelimir Ateljevic) and it was arguably the first time all season that the capital club's key man was being restricted. In the end it matter little as he scored the two key buckets at the end of the game to put the game out of sight of the upstart team from Miago. Could we be about to see title number 11 for Košarka Esca? They will believe that it is coming, Ateljevic is in exceptional form, they have led the league all season and there does not seem to be anybody who can stop them. Or is there?

A very large Magev man by the name of Evgeny Fomin would like a word. KK Rauchnya have been great this season, one of the better teams in the league and to go out the way they have will be disappointing. They are guaranteed an IUBC bid by virtue of having the better regular season record out of the beaten semi-finalists, but they did not play how they would have liked in what was Albin Jausovec's final ever game. A lot of that was down to the quality of BK Magevskaya, Evgeny Fomin had another unbelievable night (is anyone keeping count of how many of those he has had at this point?), with 33 points, 12 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 blocks. He is probably the most dominant player in Mytanar basketball, but he will be coming up against the greatest scorer in the MKA Liga Championship game for the second time and the first time it was Ateljevic who got the upper hand. Can Fomin level the scores or will Ateljevic win again to perhaps cement his place as the greatest Mytanar basketball player ever?

MKA Liga Championship
#1 Košarka Esca 86–82 #3 BK Magevskaya

It is Ateljevic! Ateljevic 2-0 Fomin in head-to-head MKA Liga Championship games and 3-1 overall on titles for the Košarka Esca star. Ateljevic was once again exceptional, he is the league's best when it comes to scoring important points and making crucial plays. Fomin might have a good argument for being the better all-around player, but Ateljevic just seems to have an uncanny knack of getting the job done and most importantly, winning. It was a close encounter, like all of Košarka Esca's play-off games, with the lead switching hands throughout and needing some excellent defensive stops towards the end for Košarka Esca to see off the challenge from the other team which has defined this era in Mytanar basketball. Fomin led his team in all categories as he always does, but he couldn't quite get the job done once again against his great rival. They'll both be back next season and will both hope to do a little better in the upcoming IUBC than Mytanar teams did in last year's tournament where no Mytanar team got past the group stage. Both will feel they can improve on that this year.

BASKETBALL LEAGUE SREDNJACI - FOURTH SEASON- FIRST LEAGUES MEN'S AND WOMEN'S

The basketball leagues in Srednjaci have finished their fourth season. Srednjaci are a young nation, but they are very represented in the world of basketball.
The national basketball team won a silver medal with the IBC 32 held at Chromatika, but the men's team also won a bronze medal from the last Summer Olympics.
Srednjaci have separate women's and men's leagues, but the national team can also be mixed.
The first league in both competitions contains 12 teams. Two away games and two at home games are played. In men's competition, the most successful club is KK Katanija Zmajevi with two consecutive titles and they are defending champions. It is interesting that the first champion was the second club from the capital, KK Dinamo Katanija, but the following season they are relegated to the second league and they never returned to the first division.
The two last-placed teams will be relegated to the second division.
The second league has 14 teams and one game is played away and one at home. The two first-placed clubs go to the first league.
The situation is different in women's competition, ŽKK Katanija Zmajevi is defending the title of current champions, but it is also their first title. Namely, ŽKK Torpedo Melarit, ŽKK Dalatia Banka-Dormatisi and ŽKK Katanija Zmajevi have one title each.
The two last-placed teams will be relegated to the second division.
The second league has 14 teams and one game is played away and one at home. The two first-placed clubs go to the first league.
