A tough weekend, a comeback required

Things were looking bright for both EHF and Parveen following the tests in Volpara as we didn’t only see her outperform most of her competitors but she was also carrying a mostly mediocre car to the top parts of the field. So arriving at Hodori for non-points race weekend expectations were high. The feeling all around the team was fairly positive too, as both Pemecutan and Bollonich had shown us that there was performance in the car. Parveen was visibly excited for this first complete race weekend despite it not being for points, she knew that this would be important to find some race pace.
Conditions would play a major role this weekend as rain was predicted for Friday and Saturday however it looked like we would get some sunshine on Sunday. This meant Qualifying would be very important as position then could very much decide the result of the race. As rain poured down, getting a clean lap time in during practice would be challenge however she needed to get used to the weather. Going out on the inters she struggled to get into the groove during her first few push laps as she struggled for grip. Pitting for wets as the rain got heavier she got faster however couldn’t reach the times other had put in earlier in the session on the inters. She was therefore at a dismal last place following the practice.

“Man, the car today was all over the place. Sliding around, no grip. I couldn’t even get a clean lap in.”

“Yeah we saw that. The setup changes will help. This is still testing, we’ll iron out all issues ahead of the first round.”

Parveen needed to make major improvements in Sunday afternoon’s qualifying if she was to try to get into Q2 and Q3 which would be what she would be aiming for. The conditions however didn’t help her in the slightest as more rain poured down on Saturday making Qualifying a real challenge with everyone having to go out on the wet tyres. Rain in Volpara was something, but here at Yakumicha she had struggled in practice. This was not going to be anymore easier for her. Her first flying lap in Q1 was a pretty good time which she and everyone in the team thought would get her into the top 12. However as more and more drivers put in better times following the black and white flag she just missed out finishing in 13th position. This was quite disappointing for the team as we had shown some real pace and missing out by such a tiny margin was truly difficult. The rain following this however didn’t get any better as it rained even more heavily resulting in quite slow timings in the following sessions. Shalmaneser Kalhu the Adabian was on pole following spectacular performances in each and every session. His teammate, Adonis however wasn’t so lucky struggling with traffic qualifying in 17th place. Following this disappointing qualifying it was up to Parveen to make it up in the race which surprisingly saw no rain as we finally ran in dry conditions.

“Radio Check, Parveen.”

“Yup, can hear you.”

“Okay good, let’s give it our all.”

She got off to a really good start immediately climbing a place and getting into the groove. Findlay behind her however got an even better one making two places on the spot. This had been an exciting start to the race as Parveen looked to climb the order further. This however was a visibly tough task in machinery that was evidently not performing well through out the weekend. She had been consistent in her lap times giving it her all however she failed to make any sort of progress. She pitted slightly later than Adonis behind her who overtook her in the pitstops with the undercut. She however had fresher rubber giving her the advantage. She immediately made up time and was right behind Adonis’s rear wing. The car however failed to make any progress due to the dirty air slowing her down. She lacked a substantial pace advantage as effects of the dirty air was clearly visible in her handling.

“It’s sliding all over the place. I have no grip.”

“Copy. Conserve your tyres for now.”

Evidently struggling she dropped back focusing on conserving her tyres so she could have a burst of performance towards the end. Most of the Grand Prix had been quite uneventful for her with basically zero overtakes. Being stuck behind Adonis she also fell off the pace of Jukkena ahead of them. Pushing in the end, she got extremely close to Fitzpatrick as she was six hundredths off him. Being wheel to wheel in the last corner and in its exit this was truly a great finish to an uneventful race for her.

“P15, P15. Good job, fabulous drive. We got unlucky, we’ll bounce back in Nimbus.”

“Thank you guys. Good work from the team. Sorry, not the best result for us.”

“Pick up rubber on your way in.”

(The below is an extract from an episode of The Out Lap, a Licentian podcast focussed on karting and racing. HM refers to the host, Harry Malcolm, while DR refers to WGP2 driver for ANMARA, Daniel Rae.)

HM: Hello there, and welcome back to the Out Lap, the top Licentian racing podcast. For this segment, I’m delighted to be joined by the man who might be the next star of Licentian racing, ANMARA’s Dan Rae! Dan, how are you?

DR: Doing well thank you Harry, and glad to be here.

HM: Now, I remember prior to the last season of WGP2, we had Joy Wingelaar on the program talking about her hopes of being signed in the sport before she joined TMW, with the rest, of course, being history. You’re already ahead of that game, having signed for the ANMARA team based in Aji no Moto ahead of the last couple of tests in WGP2. How are you feeling about joining your new team?

DR: Yeah, it’s really good, I’m really grateful to have the opportunity with the team to be honest. They’re a good bunch of guys and girls to work with, and I’m hoping we’ll be able to do well in this year.

HM: Your contract with ANMARA also means that you have a contract with the academy of their parent team in WGPC, Badai Angin. Are you hoping that that means that, with some good performances this season, you’ll be able to follow Joy and make the jump to the big time?

DR: I don’t intend to follow Joy, I want to forge my own path. She might have got here first, but I fully intend to prove that Dan Rae is the name to watch in Licentian racing.

HM: Sure, but to the larger point, are you hopeful of earning yourself a spot in WGPC for next season?

DR: Aye, of course I am. I’ve got a lot of belief in my own ability, and as much as there’s a good field of drivers here, I have to focus on the belief that I am the best amongst them.

HM: Speaking of other drivers, let’s talk about Batu Tüvshinbayar. The driver from TJUN-ia, allegedly, had the possibility of you getting a seat at ANMARA in his mind when he chose to drive for Scuderia Orange Cow, the team out of Baker Park, for this season. What do you say to those rumours, and do you think that you owe Batu a pint at some point?

DR: Honestly, no. I reckon Batu made his own decision for his own reasons, but I was good enough to get that seat myself. I proved that in the trials, and I’ll prove that again this season. I’ll beat Batu if I have to do that to prove it.

HM: Fair enough, I think that’s pretty clear! Let’s take our questions to the first race of the WGP2 season, the Crossbay Circuit in the Nexus Wardship. What do you see going into this race as your major advantage?

DR: Let’s be honest, a part of it is the fact that a lot of drivers seem to have been signed at the last minute! That automatically puts me at an advantage, y’know. It’s an interesting circuit, and I’m looking forward to getting out there: the section over the bay will be particularly interesting. I’m hoping I don’t go in!

HM: That’s very fair, and thank you for your time Dan. I’m sure we’ll have you on again, that was a very interesting chat! Now just quickly to talk about our sponsor, Geoff’s! Geoff’s is your friendly local corner shop…

Nexus Racing HQ, Crossbay Circuit, Nimbus Bay, the Nexus Wardship of Former Citizens of the Nimbus System
25th of October

“Everything’s ready, then?”

Auburn Steel doesn’t look up; her mind smoothly registers the voice and its tone. The melodiousness of passion is still very much front and centre, even after almost a decade of work on this project, as is the rumbling depth of determination and the lilting highs of humorousness. Layered across it all, of course, is the most recent addition: the depression, the monotone, of wear, weariness.

A pulse of sadness at the back of her mind. A mental note made.

“Close to, Gertrude. The process wasn’t long.” She turns her head, feeling her ponytail’s counterweight swing behind her, and offers a quiet smile. “Having the opportunity to have much of it drawn up beforehand was helpful.”

Nexus Racing’s Project Manager gives a bark of laughter. “Well, that’s one shining spark, considering everything. Time is…” She stops.

Auburn looks to the back wall of her office, her thoughts snapping to as singular a point that she can manage. She is too old to be of the Imageneration, too busy for anything but training in the evening (once a week, Fridays, lovely man called ‘Vincent’; the concepts flash up as a firework, bursting into life and dying just as soon) shortly followed by the examination – but her mind has always been sharp. One of the discs at the back of the room burns with blue light, rapidly pivoting to parallel the floor and spiralling out into a stool that comes to rest with a clack.

Gertrude laughs again – just as much energy, much now directed to the lightness of relief – and slumps. “Thanks.”

“You’re welcome.” Because she knows, and honestly, at this point who at the team wouldn’t? “We have missed Tüvshinbayar; we have not missed Rousseau.”

Gertrude’s hand clenches for a moment. “That’s… Fine, that’s fine. Would have been a really hard call anyway and I don’t know if that’s what we need right now.” The grinding growl of anger, the tightness of repression. Gertrude nods. “Rousseau’s good – flashes of real speed, promise in the wet, worked well with the team, seemed really happy…” She breathes out. “I don’t know if now’s the best time to be bringing promoting someone in the team but it’s not like we have a choice!”

Release. “We’re happy to be here; the same will be said of Rousseau. We are improving, Gertrude, even now. The conditions are adverse, yes, but we have the structures, the ideas to face them.” Discussed before; discussed now; discussed in future. Thus it will be.

“Right. Right.” Gertrude smiles. “Sorry. Edward Rousseau, then, for WGP2. Same as ever?”

“Broadly speaking. The fundamentals are all unchanged – a minor tweak to account for Janne in the WGPC advancement hierarchy but little other than that. The same three-year deal, with option to extend.”

“Right, then…” She shakes her head. The weariness in monotone, overwhelmedness… “You’ll know better than I. Send it off when you can.”

“I will.”

Surety.
We are the Nexus Wardship of Former Citizens of the Nimbus System, not just a collection of people; please shorten to the pre-title or use the full name!

Emmet: You might see a mess -
Lord Business: Exactly: a bunch of weird, dorky stuff that ruined my perfectly good stuff!
Emmet: Okay. What I see are people, inspired by each other and by you - people taking what you made and making something new out of it.

Edward had a choice to make. Two offers. One from Viska / White Unicorns, who were offering the seat up and requiring a quick response to the invite - they clearly wanted to get someone in with the first race of the season pressing upon the teams. The other offer came from Nexus Racing, a well-established team in the WGPC scene that had struggled to get some momentum going in the pre-season. They were both tempting offers. And he knew he had the Badai Angin Drivers' Academy partly to thank as well.

He'd yet to prove himself completely. That was evident - he was far from the first driver to get a seat in this season's grid. But here he was, with two offers just in time for that all-important deadline of the first race. But honestly, the choice wasn't that hard in the end. With the backing of Badai Angin all the way, keen for him to get a drive, he knew that both these teams would take him if he accepted.

It was his previous experience with the team that sold him. A few seasons ago, Edward Rousseau had spent some time in the Nexus Racing Driver Academy Series. While Edward didn't have the most consistent performances during that series, he had bonded with the team there and formed some relationships with the behind-the-scenes staff. They'd been a great bunch to work with, and with that previous history to build on, it was settled. Edward Rousseau accepts the offer to race for Nexus Racing.

"I know we haven't had the chance to scout out the drivers as much as we'd like, but are we settled on this"? I looked around the room. Representatives from all the team's departments were here, the Talent, Retention, and Development Department with greater representation leading the meeting. This was an important moment for us - for the team. We had only a short time until the first race, and still needed to sign our second driver to go along with Angela from Valentine Z. The pressure was on the TRD Department to get someone finalised and up to speed in the team ready for that first race.

"We believe they're the best option we've got. They're dedicated, talented, and we can work with them to hone their racecraft throughout the season". I could hear the confidence in his voice, making it clear to me that they'd done their research; at least as much as they could reasonably have done in the time they had to do so. "There are a lot of options out there, if you disagree with this driver though." My prejudgement of their confidence levels was perhaps slightly overstated, with the time spent scouting this individual clearly not enough to make a clear value-judgement.

"Look, we have to take a risk. No driver is 100% ideal, right"? I wasn't sure myself. I had doubts, but also knew that a final driver decision was pressing, with the decision needing to be made imminently.

"This driver has the hallmarks of one day being a top racing driver in WGPC. We just might need to work with them to help them adjust to our car and our team, as we would with any driver. It's not just about now but also about the future; I agree that signing someone without serious trials is a risk, but it's a calculated risk based on what we've seen before, that we think we should take."

"Then so be it. Let's make it official. Sullivan Joyner will be a driver for Fireline Academy Motorsports for WGP2 Season 5. What's next on the agenda?"...
Esportivan and Proud.

OPEN WHEEL
ANMARA to debut in WGP2 with Badai Angin academy drivers

CROSSBAY, NEXUS WARDSHIP OF FORMER CITIZENS OF THE NIMBUS SYSTEM - Aji No Moto AutoRacing Alliance (ANMARA) will be making their debut in the WGP2 competition this season.

A consortium of four Ajian car manufacturers, which bought assets from the outgoing Equipo Telebuenas-Badai Angin, have partnered with the Filindo car manufacturer to take in their academy drivers to the two racing seats this season. Alvis Kalvin Lacsamana, the reigning WGP3 Filindostan champion, will be the first driver, while Daniel Rae, a confident Licentian driver who made his way through the junior formulae, and with backing from Barton Software and Allan's Supermarkets, ANMARA will be trying to dish out dazzling drives that should captivate the viewers and fans alike.

A non-points race in Hodori gave Lacsamana his first top 10 finish given his difficulties in pre-season where he was dead last in the last two testing sessions. Daniel Rae finished outside the top 10 in that race, although he showed some promise in the free practice sessions and should adapt quickly in second tier of WGPO open wheel competition.

Below images are from the official launch released by the team online before the race:

The house stood empty on the corner of the street awaiting its brand new owner.  It needs a little fixing, but the yard was large, large enough for kids and pets.

Ryden stood outside on the street front, thinking his time in WGP2 had ended before it had begun, and then....

Crossbay Circuit, Nimbus Bay

Nimban Deuxième Prix

Event Specific Background Info Link

The home of Nimban motorsport effectively by default, Crossbay Circuit holds true to a tradition of building circuits in areas of glorious natural beauty carried from the Nimbans' origin universe. The stark dolomite rock cliffs of the coast at Nimbus Bay make for an excellent setting, one that Nimban engineers have used to the fullest, stringing together elements of well-remembered tracks to create a masterpiece that flows through the cliffside and above the waters suspended on great frames of concrete. All the while a great Imaginational atmospheric barrier keeps spectators from harm, allows only so much rain through as is appropriate for competition and locks in pollutants to be scrubbed away by industrial strength machinery beneath the track, while recovery of cars is made similarly possible in the second sector by Imagikinetic convertors kept on standby for this precise purpose.

"Hi, Bryce Yannec, right? Fancy seeing you out here in the Wardship!"

The squat, suited man wearing a coat that seemed to fit him poorly stepped up to Bryce, who was hanging outside the Sivaleinen commandeered mobile cabin that had been set up near the track this weekend for Bryce, Annikki, and an entourage of high profile Mertagnians.

"Who are you?" asked Bryce, as his eyes narrowed and he looked down at the man who was pulling out a notebook and clutching a pencil he'd produced from either behind or within his ear.

"My name is Joshua Klint. I write for... a few people here and there. Mostly Ekitaldia, you know? Anyway, I'm here to have a chat with you."

"Great. Typical journo ambush. I'm just here to watch the race. Should be a good WGP2 season this year, that's my comment." Bryce walked back into the mobile cabin to see Cleo with a shocked look on her face.

Bryce sat down on the sleek grey leather sofa and looked at Cleo. She blinked back, mouth agape.

"Do you have something to say, Cleo?" asked Yannec, before taking his phone out of the pocket of his new, tailored suit.

"That. Was. A. Journalist." said Cleo, punctuating each word as her eyes narrowed. "Get back out there and talk to him! You need all the press you can get. Just because Miss Sivaleinen is on first name terms with you doesn't make you above a bit of common parading. Go and get him. Invite him in. Answer some questions."

Bryce's lips pursed. "Oh, fine. Look, can you get him? My knee's a bit on the fritz."

"As if." Cleo stormed out, chasing down the journalist.

Bryce looked around the mobile cabin. No expense had been spared on furnishing the place, and the large windows of the cabin provided a fantastic view out to the second sector of the track, which had been suspended in the ocean. Bryce hadn't the first idea what Imagikinesis was, but he knew that this nation was a far cry from the more common sensibilities of Mertagne. Where he would have stood out at home with the Sivaleinen squad, here he faded into the background a little, as everything else was so... fantastical.

Cleo returned to the mobile cabin, with the journalist from before that Bryce had already forgotten the name of. She strong armed both Bryce and the journalist towards a table out on the balcony section, where the dry weather saw a slight breeze rock around them. Below, the WGP2 qualification was occurring, and the entourage were watching a mix of the track and a series of screens in the cabin with bated breath to see how the track drivers would perform.

"Thanks for reconsidering, Bryce. I appreciate it. I know you've got a lot to say, and I want to be the one to help you say it. We'll start off simple. How are you feeling after that terrible crash?" asked the journalist, as he set down a voice recorder and started scribbling in the notebook.

"I'm feeling a lot better. Still a bit stiff, but I've had the best healthcare in the region thanks to my sponsor, House Sivaleinen. They've certainly looked after me, and I'm rich in support from friends, family, and fans." replied Bryce.

"Ah, fans, that's great. More and more of those every day. I can't pass a billboard in Dannin without seeing your face in a silver suit brandishing a watch, or a crystal decanter, or some kind of fancy cufflink. Do you think that your sponsorship deal has pulled you off the road from racing? I believe it's been a while since you've even set foot in a WGPO car." asked Klint, placing his elbows on the table.

Bryce deflected cooly. "I was advised by doctors to take it easy for a while. Posing in front of a watch, a chandelier, or in a silk bath is chalk and cheese compared to the high-octane, down and dirty world of motorsport. It's a bit like a holiday, and I'm excited to start work again soon, in whatever manner that may be."

Klint scribbled furiously. "Of course, and the provincial series is starting up once again. I'm sure you've also heard about the plans to begin fielding a national open-wheel series starting in a few months time. Do you reckon the old faces would take you back if you asked? Or would you try and shoot your shot with BeckTech or Beta Juliet?"

"I'm still firmly taking a look at the WGPO. If there's a WGP3 Anaia series, I'll go for that if I'm unsuccessful at this level. While I'm certainly sad to have missed the first race, I know there are opportunities to act as a test for reserve driver for some of these great WGP2 teams. It's all about getting your foot in the door." Bryce said, touching a few fingers to his forehead.

"And you think mother dearest, Annikki Sivaleinen will help you get there?" prodded Joshua.

"No. She's no mother figure to me, I can look after myself, thank you. My skill as a driver will get me there. It's just not been realised. People are judging me from before the plane crash. I'm here to show them how I've reacted after."

"Sure." Klint jotted down a few final notes. "One last thing, can I get a picture? I'd like one that isn't airbrushed and on a billboard, if that's alright."

"Sure." Bryce stared slightly past the camera, and put on a smirk for the reporter. "Let's have a look at that one, if you don't mind?"

"That's good enough for me." Bryce said, running a hand through his hair.
The next day, after the WGP2 race
"It's a good article! It'll definitely drum up interest." said Cleo, putting her phone down after reading the article that had been published on the Ekitaldia website.

"I think you missed the part where he basically calls me an arsehole." Bryce gently set his own phone down.

"Ah, you're a racing driver - someone, somewhere, is going to think you're an arsehole. Get used to it now before it comes as a shock when you're firing sparkling wine off in R.L Cruisin's face." laughed Cleo.

"It's a long way to go before anything like that ever happens." Bryce said, sitting down on the balcony.

"Yeah, about that." Cleo placed a hand on Bryce's shoulder. "You have a meeting in five minutes. It's here, so don't worry about going anywhere, but it's with some bloke from the WGPO. Oluchi Jelani, or something."

Bryce scrambled about to look decently presentable for the meeting, which was an easy affair when your portable cabin was the work of a famous fashion house. What did the WGPO want with him? They're probably here to revoke my license. Well, good effort, I guess I'll try again next year.

Precisely five minutes later, there was a knock at the cabin. Cleo answered the door to a flustered bald man, who carried a stack of papers and was wearing wire-frame glasses.

"Mr. Jelani, I presume?" Cleo asked.

"Of course. I'm here on time, aren't I? May I come in?" Jelani replied. "Where is Bryce Yannec?"

"I'm here, sir." Bryce called out, standing up and swaying on his knee slightly as he offered his hand for Jelani to shake.

Oluchi gave a single shake and gestured for Yannec to sit down. "Look, I'll get right down to brass tacks. I'm Oluchi Jelani. You're unlikely to see me again unless I get a promotion, but I was about here at the Wardship and I'm the one tasked with talking to you. Like we're doing now."

"Like we're doing now." Yannec repeated.

Oluchi pushed a large stack of papers over to Yannec. "You'll want someone else to read these. Do you have a team? Not a WGP2 team, that's our job. Like a press team. A legal team. Get them to read this one, but the bit you'll care about is... here." He turned half the book over and landed on a page with a box for a signature. "Sign that, and we'll get you driving."

Bryce stared at the page. He was awash with a series of complex emotions deep inside he didn't really want to deal with right now. Focus.

"You look a little confused. Let me break it down." said Jelani, now looking significantly less flustered, and gaining the edge on Yannec, who was starting to sweat a little. "I'm sorry you couldn't find a team to race for this season. That's me talking, not the WGPO. But, the WGPO have decided to field a Motorworks team this season, and you have been selected for that on sporting merit. If you sign this document, we will get you racing. It's as simple as that. Now, would you like swap the silver formal suit for a silver and red one?"

Bryce looked at Cleo. Cleo stared daggers into him, as if to say get on with it already this is what you wanted my gosh sign ittttttt.

Bryce picked up the pen. "Here's to a wonderful relationship. I'll do you proud." he signed on the dotted line to confirm his spot with WGP2 Motorworks.

The hastily-assembled VSK-White Unicorns team and the equally hastily-assembled driver lineup of Kyidawa Sherpa and Aaron Deering managed to claw their way to a good points finish by virtue of fielding stellar racecraft, with the former grabbing a podium behind the Nexus 1-2. An unfortunately slower-than-usual pitstop cost Deering precious seconds and had to settle for P9.

Kyidawa Sherpa was beginning to worry that he wouldn't get a ride when the offer from VSK-WU arrived. The start of the season was coming up fast, so he decided to grab the seat before he missed his chance.

Despite having traveled extensively across southern Sherpaland, and even made a trip to Hapilopper for the Berman Bros Classic, he was still a disorganized traveler, carelessly tossing things around and making a mess all over the bedroom as he tried to figure out what he needed to put in his suitcase and what he should leave at home. As he was packing, his mind wandered and he thought about inviting Tsamji to come to the Nexus Wardship with him. They had not known each other all that long and their relationship was still very casual -- but he thought it would be exciting for her and it might be nice to have a familiar face around. He would be joining a new team, meeting new people, driving a new car, and racing at a new track. All that new stuff was very cool and exciting, but it was also a lot to take in at one time, and he thought some familiar company might make it easier to ease in.

Tsamji was getting ready to go out for the evening when her phone rang. She was in front of her mirror doing her hair and make-up, trying to figure out if there was a way to soften the lines of her face and smooth the texture of her skin more effectively. She had shaved and used moisturizer and make up, but she was still paranoid that people would notice the stubbly texture on her chin. (It wasn't actually all that noticeable, but she was having a bout of dysphoria that left her obsessing over every pore.) She put down the bottle of concealer and looked to see who was calling. Her face broke into a smile when she saw Kyidawa's name on her caller ID.

"Hello, hello, how's my favorite SIMS driver?" she said. She hadn't heard yet about the offer from White Unicorns because it had only been finalized earlier that day.

"I'm not a SIMS driver this year," said Kyidawa. "I got an offer from VSK-White Unicorns to drive WGP2. How would you like to come to the Nexus Wardship with me?"

"WHAT????" It was a good thing Tsamji had put down her make up because she would have probably dropped something if she was still holding it.

"I'm going to be racing at Crossbay Circuit in the Nexus Wardship, and I thought you might like to come along for the weekend. You can cheer me on, and then we'll watch the Grand Prix."

"That sounds AMAZING!!!" said Tsamji.

The introductions and pre-race preparations at VSK-WU were a little rushed, but a race team scrambling to get things together was not that unusual. And it looked like they were genuinely getting things together, not just running around like chickens with their heads cut off. By the time the Crossbay Circuit opened for practice, the team had both their cars and drivers ready to hit the track. The car handled a little differently from the ones Kyidawa had driven back home with AutoModi, but he thought he could get some decent results out of it once he got used to it. He said as much to the tech people responsible for the car, who seemed anxious to make sure everything was working right.

Kyidawa's new teammate was a guy named Aaron Deering who was young and inexperienced, but very eager to make a name for himself. He was a rich daddy's boy, but he seemed determined to be more than just a rich daddy's boy. (Kyidawa came from a comfortably successful family, but nothing like the Deerings.)

In practice and qualifying, Kyidawa was still getting a feel for the car and he wasn't the fastest guy on the track. But as the weekend went on, he was starting to get more comfortable. By the time everyone lined up on the starting grid for the actual race, he felt like he had a handle on things. The lights went out and the cars took off. The cars spread out some, and he began picking off other drivers, moving up the field. Some of the drivers knew what they were doing, but others were still quite green. Some drivers who were new to racing (or new to racing against good opponents) weren't that good at blocking, and Kyidawa could outmaneuver them without much difficulty. Other drivers gave him more of a fight. He passed Deering while Deering was in the pits, so there was no need to worry about a battle between teammates.

From a p17 start, Kyidawa worked his way up to 3rd, but he couldn't catch the two Nexus cars. They just had gotten out too far ahead.

The season was off to a good start, all things considered. The hometown fans had something to cheer about seeing their team finish 1-2, Kyidawa got a podium finish, and despite some minor fumbling in the pits, Deering still managed to finish in the points.

WGP2 Pt11: A New House And A New Start

Postby TJUN-ia » Sun Oct 31, 2021 9:24 am

WGP2 Season 5
Round 1
Nimban Deuxième Prix
Crossbay Circuit, Former Citizens of the Nimbus System

In a weekend shared with the big boys, Batu hoped to make his mark in this new season. His pace in the Practice Race was certainly promising for Scuderia Orange Cow and he hoped that here, at the all-too-familiar Crossbay Circuit, that his "new ear" could kick off in the best way possible. SOC was very accepting of him thus far and there were certain notes to take before the first race was even spun: Jordan Crowe was a nice lad, Vaughn Estes was very calm to listen to, the home-away-from-home Helena Kaczakzy found for him will certainly be used well, Helena herself seemed pretty nice and SOC felt like an extended family. All those things made him feel confident heading into this first weekend and this time, he felt like he could actually capitalise on it.

Only 23 cars were in action in this support race to WGPC Round 3, with Bitten Heroes yet to find their 2nd driver and the WGP2 Motorworks yet to assign drivers at all. He got to work right away, his experience from last season and the NRDAS coming to him in the best possible way. Shalmaneser Kalhu was Friday's best over David Findlay and Haru Jukkenna but Batu was an impressive 4th with Jordan Crowe only 2 tenths off in 21st. All 23 cars were within half a second of each other, so everything was certainly tight.

Qualifying had 4 parts to it and while poor Crowe fell at the first hurdle in 20th, Batu would go for broke. He was consistently towards the top throughout the session and while pole was just out of reach, he would certainly take another day in 4th place. Ahmad Syaqirin Rahman took the first pole of the season over Athan Lille and Skiia Vialiv and that set up an interesting race indeed.

This 50 lap race was pure chaos with Edward Rousseau coming from 5th to take the win for the home team in the Bay. Jukkenna started 9th but would complete the 1-2 and Kyidawa Sherpa came from nowhere in the Viska White Unicorn to get 3rd from 17th. Ryden Solow (13th), Adonis Fitzpatrick (6th), Vialiv (3rd w/FL), Kalhu (11th), Darian Vilau (15th), Aaron Deering (7th) and Batu himself were your top 10 in a race that saw no safety cars and all 23 cars make the end. Considering his pace in the previous 2 days, Batu was slightly sad that he couldn't convert that into good points, but 1 point is better than none and he will certainly accept that being on the board is better than not.

He would head back to Baker Park to chill for a bit before flying out to The Licentain Isles for Round 2 in Buckhaven. Maybe he could ask Crowe for another chat or maybe, just maybe, he could stop being a shy guy and actually try to talk to someone else on the damn grid. Maybe Daniel Rae, but he seemed like a prick if his podcast interview was to be believed. He still had a long way to go in some regards, but he felt better about himself at least.

.. and then the message came through from the VilBev Tropicorp GP2 offering the second seat in their team alongside the super Vilitan driver Skiia Vialiv.

Ryden couldn't say Vilita and Turori quick enough and he gratefully accepted.  Ryden had been secretly sweating as the countdown to the season opener came sneaking up on him and he was seatless, and the last minute ride was more than he had ever wished for.

Ryden continued with his daily task for finding a nice new home, and it was only part of the sponsorship he had received from BIG.  He liked the house,  but he didn't have time to do a proper inspection.  He raced round the house inspection and then realised he'd have to pay Tropicorp for the ride and so placed a low bid with his realtor and rushed back to pack to fly to Nimban Grand Prix and meet up with his wonderful new team.

It didn't take long for him to receive the contract from Tropicorp.  He was a pay for race driver, but that was always the plan anyway.  He agreed to pay the money for the ride and transferred the money to the team.  Booked his flight to the Nimban System.

...

Arriving at First City Airport in the First City, Ryden was confused by by how to make his way to Nimbus Bay.  He approached one of the kind and helpful staff wearing a smart blue and white uniform.  She directed Ryden to the appropriate train and he contiuned on his way.

Still with a little bit of help, Ryden made his way to the track to meet up with his chief engineer, Adam Meway.  Ryden had goggled* Adam and read his bio on the WGP2 Wykypedia* page.  Adam greeted Ryden warmly as they met.

"We need to get onto things quickly, the first race is only a couple of days away", Adam pressed.  Luckily there was full day of induction training prepared and Ryden threw himself head first into the experience.

...

The first practice day was here and Ryden was keen to log the laps.  He figured it would give him experience in his new ride and familiarise himself with the track, where to push and where to back off.   As a result, Ryden was one of the first to take to the track and one of the last to leave.

The Nimban Circuit was quite the circuit, with the second section built out over the bay.  The first couple of laps Ryden was amazed at not only the views but also the technology on offer.  Far beyond anything he'd ever seen before.  He found his mind wandering as he followed the track round the second sector.   Through his headset he heard Adam yelling at him to concentrate.

Ryden was happy with his experience in the first day of testing.  Adam also seemed genuinely pleased.  These pay for play riders often have bigger egos than talent, but Ryden was a well brought up young beepeean who listened politely and studied hard.  Over the course of the day, Adam had been impressed with Rydens work ethic.  Perhaps there was something there...  Time would tell.

After a healthy night's rest,  it was qualifying.   The crowds thronged around the circuit keen to see the action.

Through the night, Adam and the technicians had made minor tweaks to the car, increasing the downforce a little and tightening the suspension.  Adam was confident that Ryden could drive the car semi-competitively during the qualification would be in the mix for getting through the first elimination.  The rest was all Ryden.

The first qualfication session came with dry conditions, Ryden took to his flying lap and tried best...  he wrestled the car round the track as quickly as he could.  He felt confident that his time was quicker than his practice but he didn't know how he'd done.

He waited and watched the others post times, and he fell down lower and lower in the rankings.   Adam began to look concerned as the session ended, but Ryden had squeaked through the first knockout session.  Anything now would be a bonus.

By the end of qualifying  Ryden found himself on the 7th row of the grid, lining up behind Shalmaneser Kalhu.

...

Race Day came and the Nimban Circuit was  a buzz.   Ryden sat on the grid, behind his own personal rival (We should note here that Kahlu has no idea Solow thinks of them as a rival). Keen to make a name for himself, but knowing steady and precise was the way to cut through the field, Ryden steadied himself.  Whilst there were a number of much faster more aggressive drivers around him, he hoped that the intricate Sector 1 would be helpful him out before the faster sections of the track.

After the press did their pit walks and everyone cleared from the starting grid, Ryden nervously waited for the start.  The lights turned green and it was go, go, go on the first race of the season.

Ryden was grateful for the inside line on the sweeping first left hand turn.... he was sure he hadn't fallen any places at the start  as he turned and weaved through the first sector.  There were a lot of cars on track and he was sure that someone was going to crash into him, or worse still him into someone else, but he followed Kahlu for the first little while.  Everyone settled into their positions, and Ryden was made aware he had gained a position already.

"Today's going to be a good day", he promised Adam through the head set mic.

As the race event wore on, cars ducked into the pit lane, but Ryden just carried on.  Adam would occasionally come on the in car radio and give encouraging words or tell Ryden to do something slightly differently, and Ryden tried to focus on the advice given.

Adam counted down the laps with him, 5...4...3... but, never Adam told Ryden what position he was in.  On the long straights  Ruden could see some cars ahead  and in his mirror a few behind him.  So he hoped mid-table finish. ...2... final lap...

The chequered flag waved as Ryden crossed the line.  Adam and his team hugged at the pit wall and as Ryden drove back into the pits  he was greeted by a beaming Adam.

"Fourth!", Adam shouted as Ryden took of his helmet!

"Fourteenth!", Ryden misheard and started jumping up and down for joy.  "Yes!"

"No.. No..." Adam tried to settle Ryden... "fourth!" He confirmed holding up four fingers

"Fourth?"

"Yes", Adam beamed.

The colour drained from Ryden's face and he fainted in the garage.

In a plane between Nimbus System and Lisander, the two strong men of Bitten Heroes were talking.

"Are we out of Nimbus?" - Andrea Lanza asked.

"Yeah, we just left the nation." - Juliano Lemos answered.

"So post it."

Andrea Lanza was quite impatient because he was the one who set the contract with the team sponsor. For him, not advertising the company putting money into the team in a proper way wouldn't be good. Juliano Lemos, at his side, was calmer.

"Get a rest, dude. I'm sure Burgunden Breuerie won't make a fuss about it. I mean, we couldn't make advertising of their beer in the car this race, but we still could advertise Jory Jory. Athan drank so much Jory Cola that he's probably dehydrated. So don't worry about it. I'll post it right now. Okay, are you satisfied now?" - his fingers moved through the screen, writing a post for Inspiregram.

bittenheroes So, we're just short of points today. Maybe it was because we could not wear our planned livery. Anyways, it was great to have
Jory Jory Beverages with our team today! And ...oops, seems like we got a new addition for the next race! #bittenheroes #burgunden #wgp2
#joryjory

"Go and like it. I hope you're right about bringing this new guy Tsunopin." Lemos smiled, showing the post to Lanza.

"Don't worry. He's a good boy for what I could look. Anything is better than lowering my trousers for the Hery family again, like you did now."

"Do you regret it? I mean, you knew that bringing that girl right from karts was trouble, even though her daddy paid... I feel like she's not bad, though. I mean, she's a reverse Anneliese. She's got more attitude on the track than that brother of hers. Of course, that much attitude with so little experience, leads her to be more off the track than on the track... She's a raw talent that could have a future. See, if Anneliese has made it to the WGPC and is scoring points with only one season of our training, even after four years of that bunch of idiots from Danès-Woking ruining her career... then just imagine what Lianna can do if she has the means to train on her time? That's why I accepted her into the Academy. She'll be back in WGP2 in due course, and she'll be a gold mine. After all, she is also helping her father's company to make a lot of money"

"To me, you've got chicken's poop on your head if you think you're going to get anything. I mean, besides money... Hey, why is the post branded JoryJory? We should be posting about Burgunden Breueries!"

"Money is already enough. And linking participation in our team at Crossbay to a drug banned in the country? You're the one with chicken's poop on your head if you think I'm disregarding Nimban market."

"You say that, but you've got a nice cold glass of drugs there in your hand."

"That's not drugs. That's man's best friend. Whiskey is the bottled dog. But well, as I always say to the Academy Drivers. Do as I say, not as I do." - Lemos sighed and took a long sip of the glass. He still had quirks, to deal with his own ghosts. Fortunately, he was able to deal with it easily. "By the way, have a look there. Is Darius sleeping? I'd like to ask him what's the name of the new novel he's reading.

Lanza looked at the other row of seats. Darius Castellammare was sleeping with a small book on his lap. Lanza silently snatched the book and handed it to Lemos.

"Mafia's Dad? He definitely has some pretty weird taste in reading. What's it about?"

"A former mobster who falls in love with a widowed schoolteacher and abandons a crime life to live as a father and homemaker."

"Sounds like something my daughters would read. Let me know if it's adapted for the cinema, it looks like it would be a good family film, with good messages against crime and such..."

As you may have noticed in the post, Bitten Heroes Academy offers a seat to Ilya Tsunopin.

Sometimes life comes to you in the most unexpected ways, as Ilya Vadimovich Tsunopin came to learn quickly.

A year of recovery. A car crash deep in the mountains, followed by months spent in Quebecois hospitals before returning to Sonnel, eventually spending months of recovery in the hometown compound. Every day of the past year he had to check his condition up with his tradesman father, Vadim Tsunopin of Manoda Groups, off-road racer mother, Mayu Tsunopina, and his secretary and manager, Dr. Balthazar Grey, and stood before extensive trials and comments. In this family, whose globetrotting traditions have kept them floating and relevant, nothing came easy, and even Ilya, a 18-year old lad with vocabulary of 502,879 expletives and behaviour of a 乾達, worked his ass off on the racetracks just to have a night-&stripclub trip. Work hard, play hard, as a wise man once said.

Now Ilya was back in middle of an arctic compound with his doc, without thinking too much about all that's going on out in the WGP2 circuit. The Sonnelian nation of Sixty-ninE X wasn't an easy nation to be described, with the eternally-frozen northern half separated from the southern beaches by a huge mountain range that has seen plenty of plane crashes over the years, even to this day. Of course Ilya was more than aware of its benefits - while Ilya was a southern brethren, coming from the family of racers with their wealth and infamy of own both here and in Quebec and Shingroyeo, he knew the benefits of being away for extensive periods of time in his own compound. All the nights out, between, before and after the races, were fun but it's always important to know how to recharge and Ilya, who took his recovery seriously, learned to appreciate the goods behind celebrating tiniest of progresses and indulging upon pleasures quietly. Not everything had to be said, and not everything had to be told, and this was the beauty of a life in the underground compound.

As Ilya Tsunopin sat down on his couch, he quietly opened a bottle of Quebecois gin he brought it out of the fridge this morning, and slowly sipped it straight out of the bottle. He wasn't thinking so much about the WGP2 season yet, even though the week 1 had happened. The 18-year old was more than aware of how high turnovers can get in this level of professional motorsports, and the lack of offers so far wasn't intended to be an insult to his talent. Heck, even Ted Pressley took a while to settle down before ending up with a memorable season under Kaylan, so why panic?

He looked outside from his window. all he could see were the endless sights of whiteness, for snow had covered the windows of his compound thanks to last night's snowfall. Just another morning here, Ilya chuckled, quietly enjoying the fact he forgot to shovel away the snow. Sometimes, that's the way life goes and Ilya, being an intense MFer who had more interesting hobbies (motorsports is a job, not a hobby - Ilya Tsunopin, two years ago -) to pursue than snow shovelling outside for a day.

BZZZ! It was then that the silence would end, however, as a quick buzz. Ilya turned around, quickly heading to his sofa to find his phone. After a couple of struggles trying to unlock it, he was able to find the text. It was from Dr. Grey, indicating that Ilya, whose highlight clips have caught the eyes of Bitten Heroes' execs, have been offered a seat from them for the season.

Life rewards those who wait and keep working on it, thought Ilya, as he quietly read over the very details of the offer briefed by Dr. Grey. It was the WGP2 team managed by Juliano Lemos, whose history as Team Principal's solid enough for him to be convinced, and given their sponsorship with Burgunden Breueries, he was more than satisfied to know that they weren't just taking him for his money. Having money's one thing, but having his career solely dependent on his money would have been unfortunate either way, and Ilya knew better than to keep continuing at a craft if he didn't have talent nor passion at it. He was lot more realistic than that.

'Let's get it,' was all he texted back to Dr. Grey, as he quickly went to grab a joint for a smoke.

Ilya TSUNOPIN accepts the Bitten Heroes Academy's offer.

Crossbay Circuit, Nimbus Bay
Nimban Deuxième Prix

The first actual points scoring race is at Nexus Racing's home circuit and it was a weird feeling for Haru that expectations were way up early in the season. But still, he's been around this circuit multiple times and had been successful with his only sprint-race win occurred here in the previous season. He grew to love the circuit. Now, he wants to impress there.

Qualifying P9 and getting eliminated at Q3, four places behind his new teammate, Edward Rousseau wasn't too disappointing for Haru at least. He wasn't known for his qualifying at all so it doesn't bother him that much. So, what should we do in the race?

Come raceday, he goes silent before the formation lap, looking around him. All he could hear for now is the faint "good luck" from his race engineer before the other cars come to life as they set off for the formation lap. As they go around the circuit, Haru kept thinking to himself. What should I do? Where will I end up? These thoughts kept coming and coming until he lines up at the grid. Upon seeing the five red lights, most of those thoughts were wiped and replaced by one thing that will remain in his mind for the race. Alright! Let's push it hard! Let's give them what they deserve!"

As the lights go out, Haru didn't get the greatest start as he fell lost a place Parveen Kulkarni but would regain it as they negotiate the first couple of corners. While Rousseau ahead was breezing past the others, Haru had struggled a bit behind dirty air. He nearly overtook Angela in front but wouldn't keep it for long. He would eventually make his move stick later on in the lap.

A few laps went by and his teammate was ahead and just made his pit stop. Haru would pit in the following lap and would emerge within the top 5. Motivated, pushes hard lap after lap and would gain on the Tropicorps and the UrGas infront and would eventually get ahead of them after they pitted. That was easy. He thought before realising that he is currently P2. He would not rest easy as there was a threat looming from behind in the form of Kyidawa Sherpa of VSK-White Unicorns, who was blitzing through the field from P17. Knowing that progress from his race engineer, Haru will attempt to hold the VSK-WU in order to protect their Nexus 1-2. He lets Rousseau run away with the win as he becomes his teammate's rear gunner but he didn't notice that he was pushing, his gap to Kyidawa was increasing. The Nexus 1-2 at their home race is safe.

Cheers can be heard as the chequered flag is waved. Edward and Haru finished P1 and P2 respectively and celebrations was the first order of business after that successful race. A boost of confidence came with the podium for Haru and celebrations would continue shortly after the podium ceremony. And to round up the top three, VSK-White Unicorns driver, Kyidawa Sherpa, finishes in P3, bringing home points for the hastily-assembled team.

Life on the Edge
An Adabian tries to make it in the racing world

Chapter 6: Water

WGP2 Season 5
Nimban Deuxième Prix (Race 1)
Crossbay Circuit, Nimbus Bay

Sunday

Lap 46

Even when he was at his fastest, he still didn’t feel fast enough. He felt he could be better- nah, he knew he could be better. He had proven his worth at the Hodori race, even though no points were awarded for his (and indeed everyone else’s) efforts. And as he brought his car past Turn 17 and within sight of that line for the 45th time today, swerving slightly to block Aaron Deering in the process, he made sure to let his engineer know of his feelings.

“I think we can do better than this,” Sal insisted to his race engineer, as he trained his eyes on Tropicorp’s Skiia Vialiv, gradually closing the gap on her as they descended towards Turn 1. 11th to seventh wasn’t good enough; how about sixth?

“Watch out,” came the commanding voice of Ilarion Osipov. A patient, calculating man, his calm and often flat-toned pronouncements stood in stark contrast with his more outwardly excitable driver. “Caution, Sal, caution.”

Sal could see Vialiv cutting to the inside before the turn. Oh come on, she’s forcing me to the left! He pushed down on the brakes, watching with some disappointment as any room to overtake disappeared and he had to yield to the Tropicorp driver, still following on her trails as they cruised down towards Turn 2.

11th to seventh wasn’t bad by any means, especially for someone who was only in his second (and first point-scoring) WGP2 race, but he had watched with some aggrievement as Ryden Solow and Kyidawa Sherpa, among others, sped past him from 13th and 17th, respectively. Darian Vilau, too, was climbing up from 15th, although for now Sal had held him back, forcing him into a battle with Deering for eighth.

This Vialiv girl was turning out to be one aggressive driver, and Sal could only shake his head and sigh in frustration as every little opportunity to work his way past her disappeared as quickly as it came. As they dropped down Turn 4 and the vast waters of Nimbus Bay again came into view before Turn 5, Vialiv was still leading over Sal. It was a close gap, but Sal could not close that gap even further.

But in this moment, his mind was not fully focused on Vialiv. Something about the sight spoke to him, a vast expanse of blue sparkling under the Sunday sun, stretching to the end of the horizon. In the presence of Mother Nature, mundane matters such as racing just didn’t seem to hold much significance.

“You know, Ilarion,” Sal began, “I remember when my parents took me to the beach. It all seemed… so long ago. I was so young.”

Saturday

“So I’m dropping out? For good?” Sal laid himself down on the bed in his room, phone over his ear.

“Yeah,” Mustafa al-Taghlibi said from the other end of the line. “I mean you’re a full-time racer now. We can’t force the school to adjust to your schedule. You know this day is coming- Look, don’t worry too much about it. I can arrange for tutors to come and teach you, follow you wherever you go, distance education and all that. You’re a smart kid, you’ll be fine.”

“Yeah,” Sal agreed. “I’m just going to miss my friends. And miss actually, you know, going to school.”

“You’ll be fine,” Mustafa repeated. “You’ve done more than your friends ever will in their entire lifetime. And you can still keep in touch with your friends through social media or whatever app you people use. You can always come visit them when you have the time. Well actually they’d probably come to you. You’re famous now, after all.”

“What if I just retire after this season? One season is enough for me, I guess. I’m already living my dream.”

“Don’t be ridiculous,” Mustafa said, unable to prevent himself from laughing a little. “You’ve got the talent. I know you have it. Just keep on doing what you’re doing right now and you can achieve greater heights. Remember, WGPC is waiting.”

“What if I don’t get into WGPC?”

“You will. And if you don’t I’ll arrange for it, because you deserve it.”

“Alright then, Mr. al-Taghlibi, just keep doing what you do best, I guess,” Sal weakly assented, sighing. “Right, uh, it’s getting late and I’ve got to get some sleep. See you tomorrow, then.”

“See you, Sal,” Mustafa said, ending the call and leaving Sal lying on the bed, staring dispassionately at the ceiling.

“Right then,” Sal muttered monotonously, bringing his hand over the top of his head. “No more school. Just racing.”

Vaccinia's visit to Annika Hunnertwasser had been a complete failure. She didn't stick around long enough for the police to get involved, but it was pretty obvious that she had missed some basic principle of modern etiquette.

Back at the Pox Party Bar, a pair of generals from the losing side of a war were talking about old times. Nobody seemed quite sure where they had gotten the ferry fare to come back from the Underworld, but there they were. They looked up from their beers when Vaccinia walked in. "Vaccinia, just who I wanted to see!" one of them said with a bright smile. "Do you have a moment?"

Vaccinia rolled her eyes. She could guess exactly what the general wanted. "I don't vaccinate the dead," she said.

"But surely..."

"No," Vaccinia told the general. "I don't vaccinate the dead."

She sat down at the bar, making sure to leave some seats between herself and the generals, and told the bartender how her efforts to talk to Hunnertwasser had fallen flat. "It's not the 18th century, Vaccinia," the bartender explained. "You need to email people, or use your phone."

"My phone's battery is dead," Vaccinia said.

"How is anyone supposed to call you with an offer if your phone is off?" the bartender asked. He reached into a cabinet, pulled out his own phone charger, and set it down on the bar. "Here. Now what else can I get for you?"

"A maple milkshake please."

"Sure thing." The bartender mixed up the milkshake and passed it across the bar. Vaccinia paid him, and they chatted about this and that while she slurped the milkshake and charged her phone. When she turned the phone on, it immediately told her she had new updates that needed to be installed. There were a lot of updates.

"How long was that thing off?" the bartender asked, a little concerned.

"Oh, I think it was just a couple of days," said Vaccinia.

"You think? So you don't even know how long it was off?"

When she had finished installing the updates, there was a backlog of missed calls and unread texts and emails to slog through. To her disappointment, none of them were offers for a WGP seat.

A week or so later she was more or less caught up on all her digital correspondence, and she had adopted the habit of plugging her phone in when she slept. (There was no day or night in Bamford, so she slept whenever she felt like it, more or less at random.) That was when she got invited to interview for a WGP2 Motorworks ride. She smiled. If they would talk to her in person, that meant they were interested -- and making a good impression in person would be so much easier than trying to figure out the mysteries of phone etiquette!

She arrived at the Crossbay Circuit in the form of a cow, and spent several minutes trying to figure out why everyone was pointing and staring and gawking at her as she waddled through the crowds. Then she realized her mistake, fortunately before she met anyone from the WGP2 Motorworks team. She transformed into human form, mindful to conjure up some clothes during her transformation since modern people were no longer accustomed to seeing naked pagan deities in their midst. She shook out her long golden hair, adjusted her soft brown leather jacket, and she was ready to go get herself a ride. A guy from WGPO explained the terms of their offer, and Vaccinia happily accepted it. She signed the contract in graceful cursive script. She had learned English in the days before typewriters, when good handwriting was important, so she had beautiful penmanship.

WGP2 Week One: Qualifying

It wasn't until the first half Q1 passed in Crossbay Circuit until the ENSADRINK cars of Sam Blaatschapen and Chiruno Hakusoe were released for their flying laps. To the Diarcesian's chagrin, she was released into traffic and didn't really receive a proper chance to put in the optimal lap times. This promptly put her and her teammate into the first batch of eliminated drivers. Desiring radio silence during the race except for critical situations, Sam released her frustrations in dragging her car as far afield as she could. From P22 (second-last), she crossed the checkered flag at P16 and just avoided being classified as lapped.

Syaqirin journey in WGP2 start as he officially signed for EHF and will become part of EHF for season 5. He just being with the team a few week before the first race. So he surely have a lot of homework to do. He missed all the test session and his first real test in EHF car will be at first week of WGP2 race at Nimbus Bay.

End of the first race of WGP2 in Crossbay Circuit, Nimbus Bay. Getting a pole position not help Syaqirin even a little to atleast collect some point this week. The race surely different from qualifying. Syaqirin end up drop into 14th.

His first appearance with EHF seem will be good as he claim the pole, but in real race, he let other pass him one after another. Corner seem to be Syaqirin biggest fear today as he seem not familiar yet with EHF car yet. Even at first round, he already let a few driver past him.

End of the race, Syaqirin update a post in his social media account.

"Not really the best day today. Sorry to all the EHF family. The EHF car feel great, i surely need a few more time to familiarise with this. As the nect race coming up, i will not use this excuse anymore. Look forward for second race."

Syaqirin will use the time before the second race at Buckhaven, TLI and familiarise himself with this car. A ton of work, study and practice needed if he doesn't want what happening today happen again. He will spend time at Uberwienerschnitzelstadt, EHF hq with EHF mechanics and set up plan for the upcoming event. It too early for him to enjoy his debut in WGP2 and what he has to do now is be more focus. If 100% not enought, maybe he should add more 100% focus.

"Hindi ka ba talaga titinong lintik ka?!"

He should have gotten used to this by now, a young Adonis Fitzpatrick thought as he felt strong hands push his head down into the drum of water once again. His own hands were barely able to find the lip of the drum before his head plunged into the water and he started to hold his breath for however long it would take for those hands to keep him underwater. Donny never had to hold his breath for more than a minute, but the longer this went on the longer time seemed to stretch for him.

Donny Fitzpatrick had always known that there was something different with him as soon as he had formed his first memory. He was always more interested in playing with dolls and dressing up with his sisters. When other boys were busy arguing over which basketball player was going to beat which football player in a foot race, Donny was busy attending tea parties with the girls. At first, Donny's father had tolerated it, believing that it was only because Donny was growing up surrounded by girls, his sisters to be exact. He didn't think that there was anything more to it than that. And that would have probably been the end of it had Donny not continued dressing up like a girl.

It started off with Donny going into his sisters' closets and putting on their clothes. And then he started putting on makeup before he finally moved on to wearing his mother's dresses. For Donny's father, that was the last straw. The first time that Rolando Fitzpatrick caught his only son dressing up in his mother's own clothes, he immediately dragged Donny out of the house and dunked the latter's head into a drum of water in their backyard (Effelenendro had just gone through a water shortage back then, hence why the people were keeping water in drums and barrels and such). While he repeatedly put his son's head in and out of the water, Rolando asked Adonis the one question that would change the latter's life: "Are you a boy or are you a girl?!"

"Girl!" Adonis had answered. "I'm a girl!"

The answer so shocked the elder Fitzpatrick that he actually pushed Donny away before Rolando walked back to the house shaking his head in equal parts anger and disgust. Donny remembered slumping down beside that drum of water while he caught his breath, and the water dripping down from his hair mixed with the tears that suddenly started pouring from his eyes. He couldn't understand why his own father, who used to be one of the kindest and most understanding people that he had ever known, had suddenly become so cruel and insensitive. It would take Donny years before he could finally figure out how this happened, years before he could begin to understand just why exactly his father had felt this way back then, but back on that fateful day, Donny could only cry about how his world had been suddenly turned upside down.

Despite the grueling punishment that his father had dealt to him when he was first caught crossdressing though, Donny didn't stop. In fact, it only seemed to embolden him even further. In later years, Donny would recognize that dressing up behind his own father's back was giving him a thrill, a thrill that only one other thing had managed to replace, but that would come later. So Donny continued dressing up in his mother's old clothes and wearing her old makeup, and every time he was caught, Rolando Fitzpatrick continued dunking his own son's head into that drum of water in their backyard. And on and on it went until today, when after having been dunked into the water yet again and asked the inevitable question of whether he was a boy or a girl, Donny finally decided to say something that had been lingering in his mind since his head was first pushed into the drum in their backyard.

"Why do we keep doing this, Dad?" Donny asked. "Again and again we do this but nothing changes! I don't change, you don't change! So what's the point?"

Donny didn't know what kind of response he expected to receive from his father. Maybe he expected his head to be dunked into the water once again. Maybe he expected his father to tell him to just shut up and take his punishment like a man. But Donny certainly didn't expect his father to let go of his neck and step away. Donny risked looking back at his father, and he saw that there were equal parts disgust and acceptance on Rolando Fitzpatrick's face. His mouth was a thin grim line as he seemingly pondered his own son's words. Finally, his father seemed to come to a decision, but whatever it was, he didn't seem to think that Donny needed to know about it. Instead, Rolando just walked away and went back to the house without another word.

Rolando Fitzpatrick didn't bother dunking Adonis into the water after that. For that matter, Donny stopped wearing his mother's clothes too. He started dressing up in boy's clothes once again. But while he finally came to the realization that he was indeed a boy, Donny also realized that the reason he once liked to dress up in girl's clothes was because he liked boys, just like girls did. Well, that wasn't entirely true. Donny had already realized that particular fact at around the same time that he started dressing like a girl, and had said so during one of his many visits to the drum of water in their backyard. It was probably the thing that tipped Rolando over the edge, the thing that made him so determined to drown the deviancy and homosexuality out of his one and only son. The reasons for doing so were very much selfish on Rolando's part. Not only was Adonis the youngest out of the four Fitzpatrick siblings, he was also the only son after three daughters. As the only son, Rolando had counted on Adonis to carry on the family name, and when Donny had come out as gay, Rolando took this to mean the end of the Fitzpatrick line. Donny, who was young back then, didn't really understand why this was so, even after his sisters had explained to him the birds and the bees. But now that he was older, he finally understood, even though he still considered his father's logic flawed.

Donny had been reminded by those difficult times because of the rain pouring down on him, and the rest of the grid, at the Yakumicha Circuit in Hodori. The rain itself didn't bother Donny; it wasn't uncommon for rain as bad as this or even worse to happen in Effelenendro. But seeing the pools of water forming on the track reminded Donny of that drum in the backyard and all those times his own father had shoved his head into it to "drown" his homosexuality. It was both a strange and very fitting memory for him to recall, but he wasn't sure if he wanted or needed to deal with the baggage associated with those particular memories. But as Donny drove his red-and-green UrGa car back into the garage after turning in a pitiful qualifying time that left him plum last, he came to believe that maybe recalling those memories was fate’s way of telling him that he needed to deal with those now. Which only made him shove them back down even further than before.

Donny watched from the dry shelter of the garage as his young teammate Shalmaneser Kalhu blazed through the rest of the session, being second fastest in Q2 before pulling out all the stops and topping the rest of qualifying. In a way, Donny felt envious of Kalhu, or Sal as the Adabian preferred to be called. The kid didn’t look like he had any baggage of his own that he had to deal with, at least as far as Donny could tell. Sal definitely had speed, and he had loads of it. Which was why half of Donny felt that it was a right shame that this race in Yakumicha had been turned into yet another test by the vast majority of the WGP2 teams, meaning that should Sal show pace similar to this in the race then he wouldn’t get any points for it. Him and the team. That was one part of Donny. The other part, the more selfish part, was more than happy that this race had been turned into another test because there was just no way that Donny would be able to blast through a field of 17 cars barring an outright miracle. Well, stranger things have happened anyway. But Donny wasn’t banking on it just yet. He was just going to run his own race, and move aside for his teammate if the blue flags came out. When the blue flags came out.

More sufferance, early hiccups

Coming into the weekend Parveen was confident and she knew that she had the backing of her team. She would be looking to get her season off to a good start as she knew what EHF were capable of. They had come a long way since last season and this progress was visible. She however hadn’t completely come to grips with the car, her performance in Volpara obviously could simply be credited to home advantage however she had shown glimpses of skill and talent we all know she possesses.

Sullivan Joyner’s situation however was completely different. He had just signed for Fireline’s Academy securing a drive for this WGP2 season. Joyner was clearly overjoyed on having secured a seat for Fireline however it would definitely take him some time to get settled to the car. This was a completely new environment for him and having been signed following all the test sessions he didn’t really have any opportunity to test the car in the slightest before Friday’s test session at Nimbus.

Coming into Nimbus, all practice Joyner had was on the simulator. This was a completely new environment for him, he had been highly successful in Bollonich however this was a wholly new level. He displayed some promise in the practice session finishing P20 however only 1.6 tenths off from the leader. He looked quite feisty for someone on the track for the first ever time. Qualifying was a much better session for Joyner as extracted much more from the car than would’ve been expected from him. Making Q2 he just missed out on Q3 showing that he does have that one lap pace in him. His teammate Angela however outperformed him by quite a lot, qualifying in P8. She had shown her talent in WGP2 and her experience with fast vehicles greatly aided in her getting settled into the car.

“Great work out there Angela. Congrats on the P8.”

“Thanks Sullivan. You weren’t too shabby out there yourself. Great improvement from yesterday.”

“Yeah. Still getting used to the car.”

“If you ever need anything don’t forget to let me know. Also you should break later going into turn 5. See ya.”

This was the first time Sullivan had actually spoken to Angela apart from the basic formalities between teammates during his signing. He was excited to work with the team and also partner the Valentian in their attempt at a successful season. Despite the assistance from Angela and promise shown by him across one lap, on race day Sullivan’s performance was a massive let down. Having struggled for pace since the start he fell down to 21st place finishing an underwhelming race with him getting past most of the time. His countrywoman Parveen’s race too didn’t go so well. Having been outperformed by her teammate in both Qualifying and the Race she struggled to score any points finishing in a disappointing P18. Her newly signed teammate Rahman outperforming her would’ve definitely been something for her to look into as this was Rahman’s first ever weekend in the car.

“Hey Joyner, good to see you back in the car.”

“Haha, yes. How you doing?”

“Having fun. Struggling on track though.”

“You had a fair quali though. I am sure you’ll get back.”

“A Bollonischian always bounces back. Don’t worry man, I am sure you’ll get used to the car soon. Good luck but not much of it.”

“You and your humour.”
