Corrupt Dictatorship

Postby Trans-Dniesters » Fri Oct 22, 2021 10:52 am

Spring may have technically already started in Pridnestrovia, but a thin layer of snow still covered the majority of the closed city of Myrilsk when the first of three tests by the Urotovsky-Gatutin Motorsports Division was set to begin at the team's own private test track was scheduled to start. Myrilsk lay at the foot of the Krav Mountains, right at the border between the states of Transnistria and the Krav Mountains. It had started off as a small village for miners looking for gold and other precious metals at the beginning of the 19th century before being almost abandoned once the small deposits at the location had been played out and larger gold deposits were discovered further northwest. By the time of the Communist Revolution of 1916, only an estimated five to fifteen people lived in the settlement of Myrilsk. However, ten years later, both the population of the settlement and the settlement itself would grow a hundredfold when the central government in Tiraspol decided to establish a collective farm around Myrilsk to take advantage of the flatlands around the place. Food crops such as grains and corn were planted around Myrilsk to help feed the country's growing population, but suboptimal temperatures and poor-quality soil in the area meant that the Myrilsk collective farm was never able to meet the quota expected from it by Tiraspol. The central government finally decided to close the Myrilsk collective farm in 1938 after seven consecutive years of steadily declining yields, and that would have probably been the end of Myrilsk as a place for human habitation were it not for two things.

The first thing that saved Myrilsk was the creation of a railroad line between the bauxite and iron mines in Vladikrav with the port town of Pridnestrovskaya Gavan. The railroad passed through Myrilsk due to the geology of the area, allowing it to become a hub for raw materials coming from the Krav Mountains and goods shipped in from Prigava (the local short name for Pridnestrovskaya Gavan). The second thing that saved Myrilsk from becoming a ghost town was the creation of the Urotovsky-Gatutin General Machine Building Enterprise. One of the two founders of the company, Mikhail Abramovich Gatutin, was from Myrilsk, and when Tiraspol decided to close down the collective farm there, Gatutin managed to convince both his partner Mikhail Ustinovich Urotovsky and the central government to set up their first factory in Myrilsk in 1938. Fields that were once dedicated to the growth of wheat became the site of UrGa Factory Number One, and just four months after the last stalk was harvested from Myrilsk, the first truck drove off of the UrGa assembly line. Three years later, however, the production capabilities of the Myrilsk factory would be put to the ultimate test.

The Grand Duchy of Ixania invaded Pridnestrovia in the autumn of 1941 "to halt and combat the spread of godless communism throughout the region". The Pridnestrovian Army was taken by surprise by the initial invasion, losing almost four hundred tanks and almost a thousand other tracked and wheeled vehicles in just the first two months of the invasion. All companies in the country were ordered to shift production to vehicles which were vital to the war effort such as tanks and trucks. UrGa was one of those companies. Mikhail Gatutin ordered Factory Number One to increase truck production and also approved the construction of a second factory alongside the first one to augment production. But when the company received blueprints for the T-34 tank from the central government, Gatutin took this as an order to produce this type of tank for the Motherland and made it so. By the end of the war in 1947, UrGa was the third largest producer of battle tanks for the Pridnestrovian Army, rolling out 4,200 T-34s from their factories.

As a new decade came in, Pridnestrovia found itself getting dragged into a cold war with the nation of Abanhfleft, and Tiraspol decided that it needed first strike capability against the Antarctic country so it called upon its companies to present ballistic missile prototypes upon which Pridnestrovia could launch its nascent nuclear power. Mikhail Gatutin created the Gatutin Space and Rocketry Design Bureau and built a third factory in Myrilsk to manufacture his missile design should it be the one accepted into service by the central government. It was indeed Gatutin's Ga-36 missile which was selected by Tiraspol to become the backbone of its ICBM force, and UrGa received an initial order from the government of fifty missiles with an option for fifty more once the initial order was fulfilled. Due to the sensitive nature of the missiles being produced there, Myrilsk was pronounced a "city of strategic national importance" by the central government in 1955, meaning all travel in and out of the city was restricted only to the engineers and workers assigned to missile production, along with their families. Foreigners were not allowed into Myrilsk altogether. And because non-essential travel to and from Myrilsk became highly restricted upon becoming a closed city, the railroad between Vladikrav and Prigava had to be diverted elsewhere, specifically the city of Verkhovyansk sixty kilometers north of Myrilsk.

Myrilsk remained a closed city for over eighty years after, and only very recently were foreigners allowed into the city once again. Even then, these foreigners could only enter Myrilsk after special permission had been obtained from the Ministry of the Interior and the Committee for State Security, and the foreigners would only be able to get that permission if they had been invited there by the Urotovsky-Gatutin Motorsports Division. Out of twelve invitations, nine drivers accepted the offer to try out for the team, but one of the invitees, David Findlay of the Grearish Union, informed the team a few days before the trials that he was backing out of the UrGa trials after he had accepted an offer to drive for Kaylan-Domerton of Togonistan. UrGa was now down to eight applicants for their vacant second seat because of Findlay's withdrawal. The Pridnestrovian team didn't want to rush their decision with regards to filling that second seat, and they believed that three trials across three different styles of track would help them make a better decision than last time.

The top people in the Motorsports Division (Vasily Gatutin, Konstantin Rezansov, Marina Smirnitskaya, and Taras Matviyenko) greeted the trialists as they arrived at UrGa's headquarters in Myrilsk. They were wearing fur coats and ushankas to keep them warm, and Vasily was aware that they must have looked like stereotypical Slavic Communists in their current attire. Nevertheless, he personally greeted each prospective driver as they arrived and shook hands with their companions. Once he was sure that everyone who had accepted the invitation had arrived, Vasily welcomed them all to Myrilsk once again and led them through the entire facility, acting as their tour guide. "Here you can see the heart of Urotovsky-Gatutin," he said as he led them through the three main factory buildings. "As you can see below us, our production is currently focused on civilian and military trucks, with a slight focus on civilian production for both the local market and foreign exports. But should the need arise, we can easily shift production towards military vehicles such as tanks and armored personnel carriers and ramp up our production rates, just like we did in the Second Ixanian War of 2002-04 and the Szavodan War of 2008. This is why we are still considered a city of strategic national importance even though we don't produce Pridnestrovia's ballistic missiles anymore; we can easily replenish Army vehicle losses once we enter into a war footing. If you want to see where we make our nuclear weapons though, you might want to go to Ozyorsk or Zheleznogorsk!" Vasily's attempt at humor seemingly flew over everyone's heads though, so he just shrugged and moved on. Besides, it was now an open secret that Pridnestrovia produced weapons-grade uranium and plutonium in Ozyorsk and Zheleznogorsk even if their operations had been scaled back massively after 1992 and other secret cities had taken over nuclear weapons production from the aforementioned places.

Vasily and the visitors moved on to the museum, where various items related to the history of UrGa were on display, such as the last T-34 to roll off their assembly line in the First Great Patriotic War ("We would have wanted to display the first T-34 that we ever made, but it was destroyed by the Volkssturm at Wewelsburg in 1946!") and a scale model of the Feniks rocket, a rocket based on the Ga-36 ballistic missile and the same rocket that sent the first Pridnestrovian cosmonaut into space ("It's twice the size of a Neptunas missile but has only half the range, which is bloody strange if you ask me!"). Then they went to the Wall of Remembrance, on which was carved the names of all Pridnestrovian Armed Forces personnel who had been employed by UrGa who fell in the line of duty in all the wars that Pridnestrovia had taken part, from the First Ixanian War to the current intervention in Ceroat. 248 names in total, with portraits and pictures beside those names if available. Vasily lingered upon this wall longer than the museum displays, gazing upon the more recent names on the wall. Some of those names were of friends he had known in school, others during his mandatory national service. There were some that he had met on the factory floor and in the engineering places, and others whom he knew worked for the company but hadn't seen in person. And yet seeing each and every single one of their names on the Wall of Remembrance seemed to affect Vasily as if it was his whole family whose names were on that wall.

And then it was time to start the test sessions. The cold spring temperatures at Myrilsk didn't seem to faze the drivers, and they all set decent lap times for the one-lap speed test. There was considerably more variance between the drivers once it was time for the one-shot qualifying session however, and the young Adabian driver Shalmaneser Kalhu took pole over Kyidawa Sherpa by over seven tenths of a second. Kalhu wasn't able to take advantage of his pole position however, falling all the way down to P6 while Kyidawa took the checkered flag. The trialists were allowed a few days' rest at Myrilsk before they were flown off to the island province of Karavatsenin for the second test session at the Afanasiy Benin Memorial Autodrom, near the provincial capital of Beledor. The second test session was pretty much the Aaron Deering show, with the driver from United Adaikes acing all three sessions from practice to race. Then it was off to Pepuza in the northern Hatay Socialist State where, despite all the forecasts predicting hot and dry weather, torrential rain poured down upon the desert city and almost forced the cancellation of the practice session. Eventually though, they found a small break in the rain where they could safely host a session, but it had to be cut short after just an hour since the rain intensified once again. Beepee's Ryden Solow was the fastest driver in a rain-shortened session where everyone was within nine-tenths of each other. He wasn't able to carry that form over to the qualifying session, but Solow still posted a decent showing via a P3 start for the race. The Mongolian driver from TJUN-ia, Batu Tüvshinbayar, took pole at Pepuza and had a fine battle against Bollonich's Sullivan Joyner, and it was Joyner who would eventually walk away with the win, while Daniel Rae sneaked into second place and left Tüvshinbayar in third.

With all that data gathered, it was now time for UrGa to make their decision. Aaron Deering was a driver who had been flying right under UrGa's radar until he clinched all three sessions at Beledor, and he was the most consistent driver out of all of them. However, Deering was consistent only at the track slanted towards more aggression, and on the other tracks, Deering had been up and down. Daniel Rae was a driver whom UrGa had been monitoring ever since he got his WGP2 license, and while he didn't ace any of the sessions, he was in the mix for most of them, the notable exception being the Beledor sessions. Skiia Vialiv, a driver whom UrGa had had an eye on since the last season of WGP2, didn't impress in her second try at claiming that second seat, leaving Yakov Yurievsky feeling slightly more vindicated in telling the team to choose Harry Zoomtwat instead. And Shalmaneser Kalhu had quite a number of slip-ups, but there were other times where he made up for it, especially in the two times he charged through the field at Beledor and Pepuza. Vasily Gatutin had already made his choice, but he wanted to know if everyone else had made the same choice, or a different one, so he asked for a vote with his associates. He asked them to write down their choice of driver on a piece of paper which he would then collect and read. To his surprise, the votes were evenly divided, and he didn't expect some of them to pick the driver that they had picked. But it was indeed Shalmaneser Kalhu to whom UrGa were going to offer their second seat.

Pre-Season Test Two

As always, Sam Blaatschapen directed her focus on upcoming test with the plan to do everything the ENSADRINK race engineer asked her.

The first session ended with the same weather as it started: rainy. The Diarcesian reported to her engineer that the car drives very well even in the wet. Finding the line to take it through the track was not too hard. She thought it could have its performance pushed further in the next test. She was smiling and proud.

In the interval between sessions, she took note of the cloud cover over Circuit Volpara. It had been a while since the surface had been completely dry. Had she taken off her gloves, she was sure she the air she would feel would be damp.

"The forecast calls for more rain on the way," the ENSADRINK engineer told Sam. "There is an 80% chance of a downpour, 20% light showers. In the ideal case, the downpour might last only a few minutes. We'll wait until that is over. The temperature will also drop."

Sam nodded in approval, and turned to view the track, then her car. It was apparent that they want to her to be released in as light a traffic as possible.

The weather forecast was correct, and she was given the go-signal to drive out as the rain lightend. She entered the car and let her mind take care of the stresses of the task. She was happy for the moment. The program was broken down into four major portions: wet tire degradation, downforce data gathering, oversteer/understeer characteristics, and a mock qualifying run. Sam and the team concluded the program without incident. In the process, she topped the timing sheets with the fastest lap in this session.

Later that Night

"Samantha?"

"Yes?"

"Aldauren here. Hope I didn't bother you."

"Mister Ginintella! Nice timing, was about to go to sleep when my phone ringed."

"Thank the ancestors. I'll try to make this quick, so pay attention."

"I'm all ears."

"I received the good news this morning. VSK and White Unicorns's joint team was given the approval to race in WGP2!"

"Oh wow. I think you pulled some strings to make that happen, muthsera."

"Ah... hehe, It's... a complicated matter. I've asked ENSADRINK if you could be transferred to White Unicorns. I'm awaiting their confirmation, so be prepared for anything."

"Gotcha."

"Okay, I won't hold you too long so you can sleep. Good night, Sam!"

"Bye."

Samantha Odenatha Blaatschapen's drowsiness largely evaporated over the sudden turn of events, but her exhaustion from the day's activities stayed. She knew she had to sleep. As she was lying down on her hotel bed, she looked at one of the wall-hanged signs in the room. Perhaps that could help her get that much-needed rest.

As the Orange Cow Racing team arrived at Alikki-Corra in Vilita--the same track where Scuderia Orange Cow made their debut one season ago (with Jordan Crowe taking second fastest time in the practice session), there was a strong sense of confidence among the members of the race team.

Curt Elson, who was the Team Principal for the 'juniors', had pulled all the mechanics, engineers and data people aside--everyone except for the drivers, race engineers and support people--prior to boarding the flight to Vilita.
"This is a big weekend, we'll have all the attention on us. It's important that we do everything possible to give Sammi and Nick all that we've got. Some of you worked with them in AOMC, so you know they will do their part. Let's start out this series on a positive note." Everyone nodded and expressed affirmative feelings.

Circuit Volpara, Bollonich
WGP2 Pre-season Testing

AK seemed to have jetlag when he boarded several connecting flights from Filindostan to Hispinas and to Bollonich for the pre-season test. Being Badai Angin's official test driver, he was required by the WGPC team to attend the team's official press conference in person just days after completing the first WGP2 pre-season test in Pemecutan. There in Bandariyan, he was made to wait for the official shoot to be completed prior to him coming to the media room for the session. Obviously becoming irritated at the situation, he made his best effort to hide his frustrations to the team when he was being introduced to the media. Several media companies asked several questions about his readiness in WGP2 and he said that he would do his best to carry ANMARA to the teams' championship.

At Volpara, he did not have enough time to take a rest as he had to quickly rendezvous with the team and its new signing, Daniel Rae. In the test sessions in Volpara, he was told to do the entire first day on race simulations up to the morning of the second day, where in the afternoon, he would do the qualifying simulation. The first day was completed without any hitches, despite looking in the timesheets that his name was last on the list. He did not mind it as he was in the middle on the first set of testing in Bongkasa Circuit.

On the second day though, trouble was brewing. He was on the fourth lap of his race simulation, when something terminal occurred to the car. The electronics and gearbox have given up, causing the car to lose power, and he had to park the car somewhere in the track causing a red flag. The mechanics were busy fixing the car the whole day, and it was decided that they would not return to the track for the rest of the session. Rae and Lacsamana propped up the timesheets in the second day, and it might seem the average Ajian who would only look at the results would be bitterly disappointed, although he would not know the circumstances behind it.

Vilaye EnergySport Reverts to AOGP, Tropicorp-VilBev Motorworks retains WGP2 Slot

After a season competing at the World Grand Prix 2 Level in Conjunction with the Mertagne GP team and having a solid campaign, the Vilaye EnergySport brand has shifted its focus to the new Atlantian Oceania regional Grand Prix Circuit (AOGP) being run under the AOCAR sanctioning banner outside of the World Grand Prix Championships. The move is expected to allow the Vilaye EnergySport brand to develop at its own pace in a crucially relevant market for the brand, re-building its presence throughout Atlantian Oceania. Unlike in World Grand Prix 2 Season 4 where the team had longtime Vilaye backed veteran Jama'obo Pegasii along with the newcomer Skiia Vialiv, the entire Vilaye EnergySport AOGP architecture will focus on up and coming talent such as their primary driver for the upcoming AOGP season, Tomi'ii Lopinka. With a name drawn from the former capital of Vilita and one of its largest cities, Lopinka's AOGP machine will be easy to stop with its distinctive Pink tail and #0 on the wing. Lopinka will make their AOGP debut along with the rest of the field in a home race for the Vilaye EnergySport team in the heart of Vilita's modern day capital, Alikki-Corra, on the Alikki-Corra Street Course.
Image

Like the Vilaye EnergySport team, the Alikki-Corra Street Course is also taking a step back from World Grand Prix 2 action back into the regionally focused Atlantian Oceania Grand Prix. With the difficulty surround the Street Course of Alikki-Corra, some prospective AOGP teams are focusing on a single driver or have opted not to participate in the first round but have signaled intentions to participate in later rounds of the competition. The Atlantian Oceania Grand Prix will be the second series sanctioned under the AOCAR banner with the AOCAR Stock Car Series having nearly completed its first full season of competition.

As for former Vilaye EnergySport Mertagne Grand Prix driver Skiia Vialiv, the Vilita & Turorian driver has signed a contract with 3-time World Grand Prix Constructors Champions Tropicorp Racing Aelund to be their official test driver for the 19th World Grand Prix season. With her commitment to one of the biggest teams in all of motorsport and the departure of the Vilaye EnergySport team in its prior form from the WGP2 circuit, Vialiv found it difficult to attract a full time ride for the World Grand Prix 2 season after the Abovian outfit opted against fielding their own standalone WGP2 entry. While Vilaye EnergySport GP will not be competing at the WGP2 level they will continue to fund local efforts at the GP2 level as sponsor of the joint Tropicorp-Vilbev GP2 Motorworks team that will pick up the pieces where Vilaye EnergySport left off one season ago, and likewise Tropicorp Engineering the season before that. With no other offers on the table, Vialiv has confirmed an agreement to drive for the team beginning in Hodori.

Former Kissan Motorsport office
Serizawa, Aji No Moto

Tsutomu Sugiyama had been quiet for two years after KISMO last raced in open wheel competition, letting Rudolf Ibuna take the helm at KISMO's WGPC project. While a controversial scandal regarding one of their cars caused them to pull out of motorsport earlier than expected, the thirteenth child of the automobile great Shintaro Sugiyama had focused on nurturing young Ajian talent and keeping touch with them while they were doing their races in Filindostan. This had to be done in secret though, as Katana Racing, formed in the ashes of the KISMO Academy team, had hold a grudge against him and KISMO for leaving them out in the cold after promising to fund the team in their first foray in the WGP3 Filindostan competition.

That setup continued until Katana's ownership changed to someone very close to Tsutomu, and with the 'blessing' of the former owners of the rogue team, had accepted Sugiyama's apology and accepted their partial funding. By this time though, a rival manufacturer, Dahon, had already secured primary funding to the team, which Tsutomu was very well aware of. Takatsugu Okumura, Sugiyama's counterpart at Dahon, was also an ambitious person who was also a motorsports fanatic, and wanted Dahon to be competitive early on, but for some reason or another, they pulled out of all their committed activities due to financial considerations.

For the entirety of last season, Tsutomu tried to build up KISMO from scratch again, planning to re-enter motorsports full-time, starting with NSSCRA, then with WGPC. However, his budget had been prioritized for the stock car project, meaning he would not have full funding from Kissan for the WGPC project given that he also want a junior team across all the WGPO and AOGP ladder. A WGPC team for KISMO in WGPC 19? Not possible at the moment.

Then, he saw an article regarding Equipo Telebuenas-Badai Angin (ETBA)'s plan of pulling out of WGP2 competition at the end of the season. At that point it would be a better move financially to purchase an existing team rather than entering a new team from scratch. However funding was still thin, and with approval from Kissan's leadership, he thought of a plan to involve other manufacturers wanting to dip their feet in international motorsports.

One of them is of course, Dahon. Tsutomu contacted Okumura if he wants to be involved in the project, in a 60-40 share between Kissan and Dahon. "I'm interest, but cost seems too high for us to commit. How about making alliance with two other manufacturers? You say Kissan commit this much of amount, let's see if we can get someone involved also." Okumura said in a phone call. In eight weeks, they were able to convince Tsuyoshi Eguchi from Takahatsu, and Jiro Oshima from Kaze Motors, to get involved with the project as well. With Kissan carrying the majority of the budget (60 percent), and the other three manufacturers chipping in an equal 15 percent of their share, the Alliance was formed.

In two weeks time, ANMARA was able to buy the assets of ETBA, and was able to enter this season of WGP2. Sugiyama has also entered a partnership with Katana Racing to field their entries in AOGP this season, with significant financial involvement of Hispino driver Astigar Armendaritze enabling them to fully fund the two projects this season, with much cash to be used for a potential buy of an existing WGPC team...

Yakumicha Circuit, Hodori

ENSABOOST Hodoran GP2 Challenge (Non-Points)

The circuit is constructed outside Yakumicha in a scenic valley in Hodori's Toudekan prefecture. Access to the circuit is primarily through public transit, with dedicated rail and bus lines connecting the facility to Yakumicha and Jechiru. Additional road lines allow access from the village of Yegitou. Gazanarikeyu Beverage Company steps in as the new title sponsor for the WGP2 event with the ENSABOOST line of flavoured coffee energy drinks, replacing watchmaker IZAYOI as the title sponsor.

Starting from the grid, drivers will first climb six meters from the starting line and pit exit to the crest at the entry of First Corner, before dropping 52 meters through the downhill First, Esses, and WhiteRock Corners. Levelling out for the Shameimaru Chicane, the track will descend another 3 meters to join the Junior Circuit at the exit of 50R.

Climbing over 16 meters from 85R to the peak at the middle of 90R, drivers will then drop 14 meters as they run down the Junior Back Straight to the chicane of 55R, 25R, and 45R. Racing down the Junior Grid Straight at a slight downward grade, the track starts to dive more sharply past the Junior Pit Exit into the Valley Corner, with its middle third — and the lowest point of the circuit — 6 meters below the corner entry.

Climbing out of Valley to 30R, drivers will take the hairpin to rejoin the National circuit at Turn 17. From Turn 17, drivers will climb over 50 meters up the back straight and through the Hairpin, PrismRiver, TIREIPALACE Chicane, and Final Corners. Out of Final Corner and past pit entry, drivers will have returned to the starting elevation.

There is now one week until the First OFFICIAL WGP2 Race [-Time & Date-]. There are (by my count) 10 Drivers who have either been RP'd specifically looking for a ride or whose nation has accrued RP bonus thus far. With 7 Seats open still, all the teams should have a full roster by the first race. I will hold the second seat(s) on Tropicorp VilBev as a Motorworks Seat until the other seats shake out.

Imperial Studios, one of the largest movie studios in Kathmandu, had recently filmed a new animated kids' movie about a boy and a talking dog who loved racing and wanted to compete in SIMS. After Kyidawa Sherpa was kidnapped by a fictional CEO of a rival racing team, the boy persuaded AutoModi to give him a chance as a substitute driver. It was one of those movies where you had to turn your brain off to enjoy it properly. There was lots of action, but the plot was nonsensical.

Several people from the Sherpa racing world had voice acting roles in the movie, mostly playing themselves, and they were therefore invited to the premiere of the movie and a glamorous party afterward.

At the party, Kyidawa Sherpa -- the real one, not the animated one who got kidnapped in the movie -- was chatting with fellow SIMS driver Vijay Tripathi and trying very hard not to give Tripathi's wife any lewd looks. "I expected the competition in WGPC to be tough because I remember how you struggled, but I did not think it would be this hard to get a ride," Kyidawa said. "With my experience, I thought teams would be interested."

"Racing is a young man's game," said Tripathi. "Maybe they are wondering why you did not try international competition until now."

"Oh, come on!" said Kyidawa. "I am not that old. If Dinggu Wang can get a ride in NSSCRA, I should not be having this much trouble!"

"WGP is not NSSCRA," Tripathi said.

An Adabian tries to make it in the racing world

Chapter 5: First Race

WGP2 Season 5
Hodori Non-Points Race
Yakumicha Circuit, Hodori

Qualifying

“I feel like I’m trembling,” Shalmaneser Kalhu announced over the radio, diving down the Valley Corner as the rain-marred, barely visible scenery blurred past him until the whole world was nothing more than his car and the gravel ahead, with the speed distorting everything around him into something that he could not comprehend.

“You sound confident,” declared the engineer, and he was right. Nervous as Sal was, he sounded confident, hiding all his worry beneath the cold, nearly monotone voice of a focused man that belied his 16 years. Sal had spent much of the qualifying instructing himself to keep his breathing in control, to focus on the task ahead. But there was no denying the full gravity of the occasion was getting to him.

He was still very much a boy, had just entered high school and – if this whole WGP2 thing went well – would soon be out of it for good. But what were the chances? Sooner or later the dream would be over, and he would be back there like every other boy his age. He would even get to go to college. Become a lawyer or something. Maybe, finally, he would get to live an ordinary life.

Or not.

The team had watched, almost in disbelief, as Sal proved himself the fastest in Q1. Q2 belonged to Sam Blaatschapen, who was seemingly shaping up to be a great driver herself, but when Sal returned to the top on Q3, even he himself started wondering. He knew the car was fast, and he was quickly adapting to it, but… What the… Allahu Akbar, is this really happening?

And as he slowed to turn on the elaborately-named TIREIPALACE Chicane and made his way past the Final Corner to greet the line, it was all but confirmed. He thought he could hear the crew clapping and cheering over the radio.

“Sal, you are on pole position!” bellowed his engineer. “I repeat, you are on pole position!”

And in that moment, as he relaxed his hold on the steering wheel and breathed in relief, visions of his late parents came to dance in his mind. He allowed himself to see them standing by the track in the rain, his father smiling proudly, his mother waving excitedly. Mustafa may actually be right after all.

“Mom, Dad,” he muttered, allowing himself to hear the raindrops, “I may actually be the greatest.”

On this day, at least, he was.

Race

Lap 14

“Where is Lacsamana?” Sal demanded, sounding the most unnerved that he had been since he first arrived on this track. Even he was in the lead, there was always the specter of… whoever the second-placed person was. Alvin Kalvin Lacsamana, the Blaatschapen girl, Pande Putu Raka Ganesha, names that he had never heard of before getting into WGP2 but would constantly be hearing for the rest of the year.

“He’s in fourth, Sal,” the engineer said. “Raka is behind you but you are still comfortably ahead. Blaatschapen is still in third. Just keep pushing, keep pushing, and stay calm. You can make it.”

For all his public bravado and confidence, Sal just wanted to finish the race. And nothing more. This was a non-point race anyway. Allah, if I can just be done with all this. They’re probably gonna catch me sooner or later. Just please don’t prolong my suffering.

Okay, maybe don’t make me fare too badly. If I can just finish in the top ten or something that’ll make good material for my social media.

He held on to the steering wheel, regulating his breathing, and suddenly he felt a wave of calm wash over him.

“You know what,” Sal said to his engineer as he sped down the Junior Back Straight, the tone in his voice beginning to pick up. “I’m starting to… get this.”

Lap 29

He had a bad feeling about that pit stop. He needed that pit stop; the tires needed changing. But Raka was closing in on him, and Blaatschapen not very far behind Raka. And as they approached the starting line for the 29th time today, with Raka pulling away somewhat from Blaatschapen, Sal rolled down the pit lane, not knowing which of them would emerge out of all this in first place.

He could feel it again inside him; if he hadn’t forced his fingers to hold on to the steering wheel they would have surely been shaking by now. Again he reminded himself to keep his breathing under control. Every breath felt slower and deeper than the last.

As he rejoined the track, he could see no other cars in front of him. A pretty good sign. Well aside from the fact that if he had just looked behind him… actually why would he even do that, his car was literally equipped with a rear-view mirror.

“They’re behind me!” Sal broke into a shout as he rapidly approached the First Corner. Raka was just slightly ahead of Blaatschapen, or so Sal thought as he looked at the mirror; he didn’t have the time to make sure.

He turned hard to the right, keeping to the inside kerb, only to find Raka on the verge of edging past him. He could see his front wing to his left, and only God knew where Blaatschapen was.

He remained in the lead as they began the descent down to Esses, but this time he was just a little too slow. He could see Raka’s front wing again, then the rest of the body of his car. His front wheels were just ahead of Sal’s. The most fragile of leads.

Raka was at the center and gradually pushing to the right, or so Sal thought. Sal was too far to the right, grazing the kerbs at times. And the space to the left was soon, of course, filled by Sam Blaatschapen.

“Great, now there's three of us,” Sal announced in a low, guttural voice over the radio, sounding not very pleased. But before his engineer could cut in with advice, he continued:

“I think I’ve got this.”

Raka slowed down somewhat on the approach to WhiteRock; Sal took his chance, forcing every ounce of his energy into pushing the car just forward past him at this crucial moment. Raka remained a threat, even if he was now falling behind, but to the left – across from Raka – now came the greater threat.

Clearly she had been biding her time, and on the section between WhiteRock and Shameimaru her calculating efforts came to fruition. Sam Blaatschapen edged forward, just a little bit forward to take the lead, but it was short-lived; at Shameimaru Sal forced his car past her. Raka was still dangerously close to them, and as they cleared the twists and turns to approach 85R Sal began pulling away. From his mirror he thought he could see Raka retaking second place from Blaatschapen, apparently almost pushing her far to the left.

And now, as the dust cleared from his first true battle on the WGP2 stage, Sal began to recognize his opponents, and see them for who they were. Raka was brave, aggressive, driving with great elan. Blaatschapen and himself were like two peas in a pod; cold, calculating, prioritizing technique over pure aggression. Two wolves in sheep’s clothing, or so he thought.

“Such great drivers, the two of them,” Sal said, almost monotonously.

“You’re still better,” his engineer said.

“If I have to keep doing this for the rest of the year, I might just retire.”

“I know you won’t.”

Lap 46

Sal nodded – to himself? To the ghosts of his parents? Not even Sal himself was sure – as he finally saw that chequered flag. Calm, focused, in the lead… and tired, it hadn’t crossed his mind that he had won the race, even though he knew he was in the lead.

It took his engineer’s joyous “You won the race!” announcement for Sal to remember that being in the lead when he saw that flag meant that he won the race. 16 years old, barely a high schooler, and he had just won a WGP2 race. No points, but he was in first place nonetheless.

“My mind is screwed,” he said simply, betraying no hint of happiness at his win. “This is the last lap, isn’t it?”

“You’ve finished the race, Sal. Have you ever heard of people doing another competitive lap after finishing the race?”

“Right, right.” Sal allowed himself to breathe heavily, taking in this accomplishment. He shook his head as he slowed down, shaking all the nerves away. His first race had gone well, to put it lightly. He couldn’t muster the energy or enthusiasm to celebrate, but he knew how much this win meant to himself and his team.

“We’ve done it. We’ve done it,” he repeated through ragged breaths.

“Yes, Sal, you’ve done it.”

“If only my parents were here. Who… who finished after me?”

“Raka is second, Blaatschapen P3. Vilau and Findlay are fourth and fifth.”

“Such great drivers,” Sal said, rather weakly. “Such great drivers.”

"Fine, fine. bye."

Syaqirin hang up. Then he open his email. He open the email to Vilbev and copy it. Later he change the subject and resent it to all available team. He add a few additions there.

To: White Unicorns team

Subject: Offering Aaron Deering for a seat in your team

Greetings!

You might have heard of the newcomer in the WGPC from the United Adaikes, Aaron Deering. I am Jamie Giffard. I accompany Aaron anywhere, anytime that involves racing.

This email might come off as a beg, but indeed, this is something that builds your relationship for the better with Viska. Currently, Aaron is Viska's test driver. He's been busy in the factory suggesting tweaks and testing those for the VK-02H. As young as he is at present, talking with the engineers and other crew members has raised his awareness in motorsports, if I may say. Also, when he gets the time, he tries to build experience in driving, feeling the track there. But I know what you're thinking. To grow, he also needs to drive and get a feel of different tracks.

Though it's nearly the start of the WGP2 season, and that you might not have seen Aaron in the WGP2 pre-season tests, I'm pretty sure you have heard (or seen) his performance in the pre-season tests in WGPC for Viska. You might have also heard about his performance in the test drives he attended from various teams, both in WGPC and WGP2. I can send them to you, too, for reference, if you want. You can also ask your partners from Viska about him. With this email, Aaron Deering is officially applying for a seat to drive for your team in the coming WGP2 season.

I am looking forward to hearing from you! If you have further queries, do not hesitate to reply to this email!

It was a nice day outside but in the Beepeean Billy Cart Leagues club,  our intrepid racer Ryden sat alone. He had recently returned home to Beepee following his exciting trip around the academies.

Ryden reflected on his performances enjoying the overall thrill of the trials.  The smell of hot asphalt and rubber had him all a fluster as his mind rallied around the cirucits in his mind.

His shy but genial nature meant he felt he had made a quiet impression but still enough if an impression to want to continue on.  He had hoped, in the days since his last trial that he may have done sufficiently well enough to secure a rude for the WGP2 series, but understood that there were more established riders, quicker more aggressive drivers.  Still he was pleased to simply have had the opportunity and wasn't in the slightest disappointed.

Ryden was enjoying a nice chablis in the club when he was approached by his good friend, Barry Arr.  Ryden had grown up in the same neighbourhood as Barry and they'd often crashed together during their formative years.  Ryden regaled Barry with the stories of his exploits over the past few weeks.

Barry listened attentively, and when Ryden had finished his stories, asked "What you going to do now?"

"I don't know" came the honest reply. "Maybe I'll just hang out here and wait and see what happens. I still have the offer for an academy space at Aji No Moto AutoRacing Alliance.  I could agree to that, I suppose.  Ever felt like you don't know what you're doing?"

"Come on finish up your glass of wine and we can go home and watch NetFlex."

WGP2 Pt10: The No-Points Race Showed Something

Postby TJUN-ia » Tue Oct 26, 2021 5:33 am

WGP2 Pre-Season Non-Points Race
ENSABOOST Hodoran GP2 Challenge
Yakumicha Circuit
Yakumicha, Hodori Motorsports

Now he knew what he needed to do for this season. Batu Tüvshinbayar knew that this season was going to be very important for him, a chance to ditch the shackles of the past and move forward into the future, but he wasn't previously sure of how much of a challenge things could be in the Scuderia Orange Cow machine. But the racing gods heard his pleas and gave him the ENSABOOST Hodoran GP2 Challenge, a race weekend with no points at stake where the only major thing up for grabs is race experience in your machines. How things went in this event, with only 17 participants, could be a sign of how things could go over the course of the season and so, with that in mind, Batu went into it looking to at least do something.

SOC struggled in wet practice, with Jordan Crowe in 12th and Batu in 16th, but when things got heavier in Qualifying they both got better with both Batu (8th) and Crowe (7th) reaching Q3. Shalmaneser Kalhu took pole over Alvis Kalvin Lacsamana and Sam Blaatschapen. The race itself, thank goodness, was dry and both cars would be right in the thick of the midfield battle with Crowe finishing in 9th and Batu in 12th, a good job all things considered. Kalhu did win this race and Blaatschapen did finish in 3rd, but the driver in 2nd actually turned out to be Pande Putu Raka Ganesha.

So, with that in mind, Batu felt that maybe, just maybe, he could do something this season and he certainly felt a bit more confident heading into the actual first race of this season in Nimbus Bay, a track he is certainly familiar with in his history. Now he could try and focus on another goal of his: making friends. Crowe would be a start of course, as he wants to at least be cordial with his teammate, and the team at SOC would also be great, but maybe meeting someone outside the SOC group could also be fun. Batu didn't know how he could make a friend, as he is famously as shy as you could get, but he felt that if he didn't try, he never would.

Yakumicha Circuit, Hodori
After the non-points event

Haru starts to question his performance after the first race, which is a non-points event but it's still a race where he had struggled. He never felt disappointed in himself before especially after watching the WGPC race later that day where Laura and Kinu performed well. He could only watch how they've come so far. He felt disappointed in himself but still motivated by Kinu and Laura, he isn't sure what to actually feel. Mixed emotions run about in his mind until he realises that others had it worse. But still... he might be one of them.

He clears his mind of all worries and returns to his team before leaving the circuit. He thought of meeting Laura before leaving, to congratulate her but there's not much time. Maybe next time. He thought to himself. He had to focus on where he's at first and with the next round, and the first points-scoring race is at Crossbay, his team's home race, he can feel the pressure as he looks at his team looking forward to the weekend. So why worry too much?

In between the work for the domestic series, VSK's WGP2 section has been quiet recently. Since their entry wasn't included, work was seemingly lessened in terms of priority to the dismay of Raiko, the team principal for VSK's WGP2 project. While a bit of development continued it lagged behind after the news until a sudden development came up. An early-morning call from Martjen woke Raiko up and he was definitely surprised when Martjen uttered the words "we're in."

"What?! Care to explain what that means?"

"Our entry was merged with White Unicorns for WGP2 and is now in the current grid so we have a joint team working here. It's a bit of a late one but there are a few drivers looking for seats. There'll be a lot to work on for the upcoming days especially since the first race is fast approaching."

"So we're doing a VIska now, huh?"

"I'd say yes. I'll get you in touch with our partners and to quickly mention, Mr. Maarukanna is fine with the partnership."

"I was about to ask that."

"Anyhow, I'll be late today so just check your emails for now."

"Well.. sure, alright then."

After hanging up, Raiko rushes to check his emails to find the confirmation of the joint team from Maarukanna and following that, an email for an application for a seat. Wait.. shit, I forgot to ask. Do we have control on the seats as well or does-- dammit. It's early in the factory and I'm already confused. I might need to meet up with the White Unicorns side. I sure hope everything will be clear soon.

"Ah boring day" Syaqirin sat lying in the living room of his house, there was no activity to do.

"What is Fazri doing now? Today is Sunday. I wonder if he on holiday now, let's try call him first." Syaqirin monologues to himself in his heart.

"Hi, are you busy?"

"Hi rin, not busy. Lazy to go out. Tired."

"Find a girlfriend." Syaqirin laughed naughtily.

"You shut up. You're the same"

"I don't want to. But if I hope for a girlfriend, my friend will be lonely." More and more teasing from Syaqirin.

"You damn friend."

"Fazri, is there are no empty spots in your team? I want to refresh my body. The go kart race is good enough. I heard there is a race this weekend."

"Race? Oh, that sponsor race. I don't remember about that race. I also have 2/3 of the boys who want to race. If you want to race once, I'll calculate."

"Good. I want the tests first. Warming up. There are some teams that haven't confirmed the driver yet, so I'd better prepare. If there's a call, at least I'm ready."

"Good. We'll talk later. I'm tired today."

"Ok2. While you're resting, do you want to play online games? I haven't opened this in a long time."

"Hmm, okay. Give me 5 minutes, I want to go to the kitchen to get a water. I'll message you later."

"Ok, I'll wait."

While waiting for Fazri, Syaqirin opened his email. No replies from any team yet. He calmed down and closed his email. He is confident he can still grab a place in any team that is still available such as Bitten Heroes Academy, Erkuns-Hohnschich-Furzeine-Motospiel, Nexus Racing, Viska / White Unicorns, Fireline Academy Motorsports

The first race weekend was a decidedly mixed bag for the overall Orange Cow operation. In Hodori, the weekend was officially a 'test' although run like a race weekend; in a wet weather free practice, the team sent Jordan Crowe and Batu Tüvshinbayar out on divergent setups to get an idea of how the cars would handle in the conditions, as there'd been no wet track testing in the pre-season.

Batu started with the lower downforce setup, although both drivers were theoretically not in full wet, high downforce trim at the beginning; there were short runs followed by a return to the garage to make adjustments, then back out again for several laps with Batu and JC giving feedback over the radio. While it appeared very low risk and fundamentally boring to the outsider, the sheer amount of data the team were mining from every lap, change in track condition, and change to both cars was invaluable.

"Looking good Batu, really doing good laps". Vaughn Estes had been Pedro Carballal's Race Engineer the season before, and he knew what Batu's reputation was in the pitlane then, although Pedro himself had thought it all a bit unfair. "I wonder if anyone is talking to him, rather than 'at' him down there" mused PC one day, which Vaughn remembered in the aftermath of Batu's signing; he decided he would take the same approach he used with PC in handling Batu, and at this time, on this day it took all the encouragement and reinforcement necessary to keep his guy focused.

"Vee two, let's pull him in for some more wing and full wets". Paul Valentini, the Engineering Director had taken to calling Estes V-2 last season--of course with himself as 'V-1'--and the name stuck.

"Box Box Box Batu". Estes switched the comm channel over to the in-car radio, then back to the main intra-team channel to tell the mechanics to get ready.

By the end, the time charts didn't look particularly flattering for the number 9, but everyone insisted to the TJUN-ian that he'd done very well, that he would see the fruits of his labor in the qualifying portion.

Jordan and Batu were in the motorhome which served as the place where the drivers could get away from everyone else (and each other if they wanted, as it had two compartment areas with the toilet/shower area in between), and like the similar stage in the previous season, prior to qualifying of the first race, although this wasn't a 'real' race, Jordan found himself in the position that he'd been to PC then--the guy in the team who was the 'home driver', knew the crew better and had nothing to gain by helping his teammate, but still did so because...it was what you did.
He, PC and Saki had all gotten a share of individual glory in their own right, and Crowe sensed that Batu would have to perform better not being in the middle of power plays that were out of his control.

"Batu, I know we crossed paths a few times last year, but it's good to have a chance to really get better acquainted with you now. I hope you've gotten a good idea that this is a close-knit 'family' (he made a quick two fingered quotes signal) and when you're with us, we're with you. Sak & PC were kind of surprised by how quickly the mechanics, the people at the factory, accepted them as one of their own. It's our Parker thing, we're taught it from a young age. When we all pull together, share the burden, we all get to share the benefits of success. Of course, on the track, it's every man for himself...".

Both young men laughed, then a quick knock on the door was followed by Helena stepping in. "Rain is supposed to be coming down harder for quali. Paul and Mike want you with the nerd squad, now." 'Nerd Squad' was how the data analysis people and the engineering staff were referred to by everyone in shorthand, and "Hella" grabbed two of the umbrellas stored in an overhead cabinet.
____________________________________________________________________________________________

As has been discussed, Helena Kaczakzy had been Sakite Kuyara's PA in season 1, as well as becoming her best friend; it was Saki who dubbed her 'Hella' because of her tenacity and spirit (the Hodorian would say she was hella good, or hella tough, or hella funny, you get the idea). When she first met with Batu, she explained what was going to have to be done once they got back to BP from Bollonich, first of which was a place for him to live during the season.

"When you came for the test days, you experienced first hand how far the factory is from the 3rd largest city in the Commonwealth [Oceana, in the western part of the country], so if bright lights, big city is what you're looking for, you're shite out of luck. I had no idea at all what sort of place Saki would be comfortable staying in, only really getting a general idea of what her life in Hodori was. Pedro was fine with a condo about 10 minutes from the factory in Haskins, but Sak really took to what we call a "cottage" but would be probably be considered a bungalow, in a small village area. I'd like to see if I can find something around where I live, north of the factory in Kingston Borough, which is the surrounding area of Georgetown."

She found a condominium development that had townhouse style units plus the normal amenities (pool, exercise facility, tennis/basketball courts) where there was a furnished unit for rent; on a clear, sunny day you could even see the roof of the wind tunnel building at the PRL from the extra bedroom on the 2nd floor. Batu could drive a street car (unlike Saki, which meant Helena had to drive her everywhere) so she arranged to get him a short term lease, and then told him--"You need anything, you have my number. I'm less than 10 minutes away."

____________________________________________________________________________________________

Qualifying was elimination style and the all of the info gathered was, as predicted, very useful to aid in the setup, proven by the times--they both were consistently in the top half of the field and within 0.3 of a second to the leader, as well around 0.1 of a second from each other; they would line up on the fourth row together for the 46 lap race the next day, and everyone in the team was optimistic based on the results.

There was not a drop of precipitation in the sky on the following afternoon, and although the engineers tried to use a setup similar to the year before, when both PC and Saki ran very well on this track in both the the feature and sprint races, the next generation machines crossed the finish line well behind the winner in 9th & 12th.

Helena had even finally coaxed Sakite to come in for the race, which was a huge emotional boost to everyone in the garage; Lambert told everyone that it was a good performance under difficult conditions and they would be better for the experience at Crossbay Circuit, where the team had done well in qualifying and Batu was especially confident about.

Go to bed now, we need to wake up early tomorrow."

"Alright." Satisfied with his kid's response, Louis sighs in relief and turned to walk to his bedroom. He lit the bedside lamp to check his work phone. There was a message from Raiko of VSK.

Oh, yeah I remember
, Louis thought. I'm now back to managing a WGP2 team.

They were to discuss who their drivers would be. Aldauren relayed to him that word from ENSADRINK was still pending regarding the transfer of Sam Blaatschapen. Louis thought that the time to reach a decision for a driver was fast approaching. He made a reminder on his phone to talk to Aldauren regarding Sam's contract: there could be a provision to automatically allow Sam's transfer if no response was received after a certain time. If Sam Blaatschapen's transfer is not possible, he will offer her seat instead to Aaron Deering, Fyrelyra Aervath, and Edward Rousseau. He didn't have the luxury to provide tests, so his determination was done through scouting and racing background reviews. Should he need to exercise this option, he would accept the first person who responds positively to the offer.

About the other seat, he would reiterate to Raiko that the final decision would be VSK's to make, but if asked for recommendations, he'll namedrop his backup choices.

One the situation is as clear as day, Raiko starts to work on finding a driver for that second seat. He starts ahead of Martjen and since time until the next round is running out, they couldn't do any tests as well. But after closely following the pre-season, he knows who he wants but is unsure if they would accept. Making a decision about who to pick is difficult without Martjen, who actually knows how to handle the drivers, he glosses over his list of drivers again.

He knows the situation regarding the first seat so he'd consider that as he reaches his final decision, it was a unique circumstance that made it difficult but he is confident in his decision. On behalf of the joint VSK-White Unicorns WGP2 team, Raiko Meirokana of VSK-Maarukana offers the second seat to Aaron Deering unless Sam Blaatschapen's transfer is not possible (as Blaatschapen's seat will be offered to Aaron Deering along with two others), then the offer will go to Sullivan Joyner. It was an interesting coincidence that Aaron Deering is one of their choices from both sides. He did use his Viska connection as he reached out to VSK-White Unicorns but Raiko sees it as a gift from the Eagle due to how the Aurun Big Three works outside of Auruna. With that aside, he made his first significant decision of the season.

Raiko then waits for the situation to develop, he has to be quick in his decisions as the first points-scoring race looms near. No team would want to miss out on that. Well, Martjen did miss out on something big.

"Why is he not answering his phone?" Logan can be heard frustrated over the phone, as Jamie answers the call.

"He's driving," Jamie simply replied.

"For?" Logan was dead curious.

"No, I mean, Aaron's currently driving right now, testing another set-up," Jamie cleared.

"I know you're hearing about the Blaatschapen transfer, but if that will not happen, Aaron's on the top of the list along with some names for the first seat. If the Blaatschapen transfer won't happen and they offer Aaron to drive the first seat, then, of course, I'll accept it. Viska also called me a while ago, too, and while we wait for that to happen, Viska is giving us the second seat. I told them Aaron will be happy to drive for Viska anytime. I know you know he's itching to drive. So, in the meantime, we'll have the second seat. I'll tell you right away if the WGP2 will allow the transfer or not, though I know you'll get wind of it too."

“I take it that we finally have some good news?” Vasily Semyonovich Gatutin said as he entered the office of chief engineer Konstantin Zakharovich Rezansov.

“I do have some good news, sir,” Rezansov nodded. “But I also have news which you can choose to interpret as either good or bad. It’s all up to you.”

“Well, in that case I choose to hear the unequivocally good news first,” Gatutin nodded. “WGP2 have finally released their chosen specifications for the coming season. The unequivocally good news, as you referred to it, is about the tires. WGP2 have announced that their official tire supplier this season will be from Stellenbosch, TK Golden, and Brusteinn. I’m not sure if those are three different companies with similar offerings or three companies working together to produce a single set of compounds, but they’re the official supplier.”

“Well, I’ve heard of Stellenbosch before,” Gatutin nodded. “But none of these companies are Tropicorp. I thought you said that this was the unequivocally good news I was hoping for.”

“Those were actually your words, not mine, Vasily Semyonovich,” Rezansov quietly reminded his boss. “But I hadn’t actually finished. Stellenbosch, TK Golden, and Brusteinn may be the official supplier for this season but WGP2 have agreed to keep Tropicorp on as an alternative supplier for those teams who want something other than the official tire.”

“Ah, then why didn’t you say so?” Gatutin asked. “Well, that is actually good news. We’ve been using Tropicorp tires for the past two seasons so I see no reason why we should consider switching to anyone else. And now what is the news that you said that it was up to me to decide whether it was good or not?”

“It’s about the engine, sir.”

“Which engine? Ours or the official spec?”

“The official spec from WGP2, Vasily Semyonovich,” Rezansov clarified. “They’ve selected Preston as their official engine once again, sir.”

“And how is this something that I can decide is good or bad news?” Gatutin asked back. “So far, I think this is still good news.”

“WGP2 are offering the other prospective engine suppliers a chance to put their engines up as a choice alongside Preston, pending official review,” Rezansov said.

“What? Didn’t they already get enough data from us during the preseason tests?” Gatutin asked.

“Not our own engines, Vasily Semyonovich. WGP2 are willing to accept other manufacturers as alternative choices to Preston if we can present them an engine that’s similar in specifications to the Skychief V6.”

“How similar are we talking about?” Gatutin asked, now genuinely curious. “And how many other teams are gunning to get into this as well?”

“So far, sir, it seems to be that we are the only one who seem truly interested in this development,” Rezansov shrugged. “Of course, sir, this is entirely dependent on your final decision. Also, I do believe that only manufacturers who have participated in the previous season are eligible for applying for this.”

“Well, then, do we have it? Do we have an engine that’s similar to the Skychief?” Gatutin asked.

“Of course, sir. Like I said, we’ve been hard at work just for this possibility. If you’ll follow me down to the floor,” Rezansov said as he stood up, and then he led Gatutin out of his office and down to the factory floor below, where the staff were busy assembling engines for Urotovsky-Gatutin’s CGPRA operations. Rezansov took Gatutin to the far wall where crates and pallets had been set aside. A weirdly-shaped object covered by a tarp lay over one such pallet. “Is that it?” Gatutin asked, pointing at the object.

“Indeed it is, Vasily Semyonovich,”Rezansov nodded, and he took hold of the tarp covering and pulled it away. Underneath the tarp was indeed a WGP2-style engine. At first glance, it looked to Vasily Gatutin just like the other engines that were being assembled beside them, but as he had more time to look at it, he felt that there was just something off about it. He couldn’t put his finger on it, but something in his gut told Vasily that this engine was not really an UrGa engine.

“We don’t have an official name for it yet,” Rezansov said, “and our official documents only refer to it as the ‘GP2-HP’, for Hapilopper-Preston. Out of all the engines that we had to build for this season, this was the easiest one to make, mostly because we already had access to the engine itself when we used it last season. And what parts we couldn’t see or were not allowed to access by the Preston people, we either adapted our own stuff or copied from the Hapiloppians’ own blueprints. I’m pretty sure that those designs that our people in the GRU were able to take are at this point one year old or even longer, but for the moment they will suffice. At least until we have finally created our own equivalents. So, Vasily Semyonovich, what do you think?”

Gatutin spent some time just looking at the engine and forming his own thoughts. Finally, he asked, “You said that this engine matches the specifications of the Skychief as selected by the WGP2?”

“Yes, sir,” Rezansov nodded.

“You mean that if we put its performance up against the Skychief, nobody would see the difference?”

“Nothing except the computers themselves, and even then it will be a close-run thing.”

“Is it reliable, though?” Gatutin asked.

“What do you mean by reliable, sir?” Rezansov asked in reply.

“You know exactly what I mean,” Gatutin said. “If I were to stick this engine into a UAZ-469 and had that UAZ sent to the frontline in Ceroat immediately, how long do you think this engine will last in combat conditions? Ten thousand kilometers? Five thousand? One thousand? How long, Kostya?”

“Well, sir, according to our latest simulations, that engine can last for at least 4,500 kilometers,” Rezansov replied after thinking for a moment.

“And tell me again how long an UrGa-powered UAZ can last in the same conditions?”

“11,150 kilometers, Vasily Semyonovich.”

“Well, then, this simply just won’t do,” Gatutin said, shaking his head. “What is UrGa known for again? Reliability. Reliability on the road, reliability in the battlefield, reliability in a 300-kilometer-long race. And this engine before me is anything but reliable. Not only because it is not of our own design but because it uses both components and materials that were not designed with combat operations in mind. What is the point of presenting the world with an engine carrying the UrGa brand if it does not live up to the standards of the name of Urotovsky-Gatutin? Take it away from me, Kostya. I would prefer to have a foreign engine powering our cars rather than have an unreliable engine carrying the name of UrGa. We’re sticking with the Preston engine, Kostya, and that’s final.”

“I’ll go put the ballast in the cars again, Vasily Semyonovich,” Rezansov nodded.

It was a day of pouring rain at the Yakumicha Circuit in Hodori as WGP2 paid the place a visit for what was supposed to be the first race of the new season. Hodori was supposed to be the host for the first race of the fifth season of WGP2, but after a vote between the team principals (a vote in which UrGa, through Vasily Gatutin, had abstained) it was decided that this race, called the ENSABOOST Hodoran GP2 Challenge, would not count for any points instead, and will be considered a third preseason test. The weekend would still retain the race format originally envisioned for it, up to and including both qualifying and an actual race, but nobody would gain any points from the results. Not the teams, not the drivers, nobody. Truth be told, Vasily had wanted to vote against turning the race into another preseason test, but with an overwhelming majority voting for making this into another test, Vasily opted to keep his head low and simply abstained instead of going “no”. It was a decision that he knew he would regret, probably up to the end of the season itself.

The pouring rain didn’t seem to faze UrGa’s young Adabian driver, Shalmaneser Kalhu, one bit. In fact, the 16-year-old appeared to be thriving under these conditions. Kalhu was certainly doing better than the last time that UrGa had seen him driving in the rain. One thing that Vasily did seem to notice was that while Yakumicha was a technical track, it was less technical than the track at Pepuza Race Park, the one and only place where UrGa had experienced torrential conditions during their test sessions. Kalhu did not do well at all during that one hour of practice in the rain in Pepuza, and yet here in Hodori, he was absolutely flying. Donny Fitzpatrick, UrGa’s regular driver, was just nine-hundredths of a second away from Kalhu but was still in seventh place, but as the weekend went on it would turn out that the rain was just masking the sheer gap between the two drivers.

There was only one session in the race weekend which Kalhu didn’t top, and that was Q2, which went to the Diarcesian prospect Sam Blaatschapen, and even then Shalmaneser (or Sal as he appeared to prefer to be called) was just three-hundredths of a second away from her. All of the other qualifying sessions, Sal Kalhu had aced. And in the bloody rain as well! If Vasily had had his doubts about offering his team’s second seat to such a young driver then this weekend was well on its way to removing any doubt whatsoever.

And whatever lingering doubts that anybody in the team may have had about Sal surely must have been erased once the Adabian executed what could only be described as a perfect drive in Hodori. And the way that he held off both Blaatschapen and Raka Ganesha on lap 29 after Sal had just come out of the pits was a work of art in itself. It might just have been the move that sealed the deal, and the win, for Urotovsky-Gatutin. The only problem that Vasily could see about the whole weekend was that both the team and Sal did not get any points for that win. Maybe he really should have just stuck to his guns and voted “no” to turning this weekend into another test instead of abstaining. Those lost 25 points could prove very costly for both UrGa and Kalhu.

“I really should have voted no to turning this weekend into another test,” Vasily muttered to himself.

Track Information

Circuit Name: Crossbay Circuit
Location: Nimbus Bay, Nexus Wardship of Former Citizens of the Nimbus System
Lap Record: 1:26.018 (Ryker Lane, Nexus Racing UHSGV-1)
Lap Length (km): 4.83
Qualifying Type: Elimination

The first World Grand Prix-rated track with a section that runs above a large body of water, Crossbay Circuit continues the long and proud Nimban tradition of race circuits built in areas of astounding natural beauty by running across, through and below the stark dolomite rock cliffs of Nimbus Bay. It combines sections from three famous courses of the Nimban origin universe, Vertigo Loop Racetrack, Keelhaul Canyon Raceway and Dragonmaw Chasm Raceway, and combines them with often fearsome elevation changes to form a track that demands both driver ability and daring to perform well.

A Lap of Crossbay Circuit

A lap of the track begins in Sector 1 with a short run down the end of the start/finish straight to Turn 1, a long and smooth left-hander that is deceptively tight in the middle of the turn and falls by a few metres over its course. A short dash separates Turn 1 from the gentle Turn 2 before the car enters the first of the two tunnels on the course. Cars then descend rapidly into an underground stadium section that most analysts agree is the circuit’s most finicky, featuring the relatively mild Turn 3 and the hairpin of Turn 4 which, like Turn 1, tightens towards the middle; neither of these, and particularly Turn 4, would be nearly as significant of a challenge if they did not each feature drops of several metres. The track then passes under itself before shooting down and out of the cliffs into the water-crossing Sector 2.

Immediately drivers are forced to deal with the esses of Turns 5, 6 and 7. While 5 does demand some braking, the latter two can be taken surprisingly quickly, in part the result of the increase in grip caused by the track levelling out; the measure of a good driver here will be how much momentum they can retain into the following straight. That straight runs up to the nudge that is Turn 8 and the sweeping, banked Turn 9. After that, the chicane of Turns 10 and 11 provides another momentum-holding test into Turn 12, which technically begins immediately after Turn 11 and gradually tightens up to the beginning of the third sector while also presenting drivers with the track’s first rise.

Sector 3 is by far the fastest of the sectors. Drivers dart into the cliff tunnel after 12 to face a long, climbing straight broken only by Turn 13, a left-hander that may as well not exist for all of the change in speed that it necessitates but does create an obstruction to the driver’s vision. This drastically increases the difficulty of Turn 14, a tighter but still fast right-hander immediately after the tunnel exit; not only does the flattening of the circuit after the tunnel mean that it is taken near-blind but it also substantially destabilises a car just before the run to Turn 15, the sector’s slowest corner and where that stability is most needed. Overtaking through this section, though attractive due to the heavy braking zone, thus takes substantial daring and skill. A short run and the chicane of 16 and 17 bring drivers back to the far end of the start/finish straight and the finish line.

Safety

There are obvious safety-related challenges involved in high-speed racing above water. The organisers of the Nimban Grand Prix fully appreciate this and have taken steps to ensure that Crossbay Circuit is a paragonal track for motorsport safety, featuring:
  • Traditional belt-and-tyre barriers;
  • Imagikinetic force field technology to prevent cars or car parts from leaving the bounds of the racing environment;
  • Imagikinetic recovery of crashed cars and car parts within Sector 2.

Environment

Motor racing typically has a significant environmental impact; all efforts have been made to minimise that impact at Crossbay.
  • Significant care was taken before construction to relocate vulnerable wildlife away from the circuit to other areas around the cliffs of Nimbus Bay;
  • Roman-style concrete, used in part for its reduced carbon footprint, has been employed throughout the construction of the circuit and its facilities;
  • Harmful pollutants and greenhouse gasses created over the course of racing remain sealed within the confines of the Imagikinetic safety force field, whereupon they are scrubbed from the air by industrial-scale machinery housed underneath the track.

Part 6: Lights out, and Go!

Postby The Grearish Union » Fri Oct 29, 2021 11:04 am

Part 6: Lights out, and Go!

FP was mostly characterised by rainy conditions – which wasn’t something David was very unaccustomed with, being a Forsho boy and racing around in the local track. The port city is notorious for a great deal of precipitation in the wet months, and even a few decades ago, it wouldn’t be very uncommon to see waterlogged streets in the rainy season. The WGP2 (pre) season thus far hasn’t been too different from his own experiences, therefore, and David was feeling rather comfortable with the car and the situations around him. Domerton Racing and Kaylan made a partnership of dreams and David found himself achieving the impossible rather quickly, as he ended up driving for his first-choice when it came to racing in general.

David had never asked his engineer his name. It was an agreed fact that the person was an angel and had been great to David ever since he first tested for the team at the Hwoarang circuit, but it never came around to asking him what he’s called, for some reason. Just before practice, he had amended that, and the engineer now had a name to go by – Kaisara Seiuli, even though he preferred to be called Kai. The man is probably in his mid-thirties, and has the brightest of smiles. You’d probably notice him by his rimless spectacles and his laptop that is never not tucked under his arm. It is only incredibly apt for the team to call him their ‘silent workhorse’ and David was absolutely elated to have this partnership.

The experience in dealing with rainy situations, however, came with the obvious caveat of the relative inexperience in dealing with cars that went at such neck-breaking speeds. It is not like he could complain about it to his heart’s content, however, as a 16-year-old Shalmaneser Kalhu was speeding around the circuit in very, very impressive times. Both the Domerton cars were far from the benchmark, in comparison, and only finished 9th and 10th in free practice. The teams who did well, were hoping for some dry-condition data in the qualifying sessions, and those who didn’t prayed for more rain.

David certainly did not get his set-up right, once again. Heading into the high, long corner at 90R, he realised that the abnormally heavy rain ensured that with his rather understeer-y car, he wasn’t getting enough grip even out of the wet tires to take the corners at decently high speeds. Coming back down through the Junior Back Straight, there was a spray of water that followed his car through to the 55R-25R-45R chicane – but just before his entry into the series of little corners, his car started to give up on him.

“I’m losing power, Kai. Losing power.” David tried to keep calm as he spoke over the radio.

“Copy that, it looks like a battery malfunction. Please drive to the nearest safe runoff area and abandon the car,” said the voice on the other side.

“Alright,” was all David could muster. It didn’t look like he could get another lap in, in the first qualifying session.

And fair enough, he finished fourteenth in the round. Four tenths of a second separated him from the top of the field, where a certain Adabian kid was bringing the entire world into a sense of awe. How could a teenager possibly even think of dominating the entire WGP2 field, let alone actually doing it! Perhaps this was the witnessing of the creation of the next great champion in racing.

P14 was therefore where Findlay had to start the race, and surprisingly, it was dry out there. In a way, it helped the Grearish driver in attaining the element of surprise as the other teams had the potential of struggling to adjust with a dry track, given how most of the data from Practice and Qualifying were in wet and very, very, very wet conditions, respectively. As the fans wondered about such a possibility, David got around to delivering it. A blistering start saw him climb a few positions into the very first corner, while the understeer went back to being absolutely perfect for him as the dry track helped with his grip and he could ‘send it’ at any time and place of his choosing.

“P5, David, P5! Great drive today!” Kai sounded elated over the radio, and perhaps rightly so. It isn’t everyday that you see a driver climb nine places in a race. That too, his first proper (albeit non-championship) WGP2 race.

“Yeah, that wasn’t too bad. Wish there were points for this one!” said David, as he afforded himself a little giggle. The efforts must be kept up, though. Vilau had outperformed him for the entire duration of the various stages of the race, and he needed to up his game to be the top dog in the team. Domerton as a whole, however, seemed to be quite happy with the result.

“Bring the wheels home, David.” Kai ended the chat rather professionally.

“Copy that.”
