I did see a report on an artillery attack on SK island that had only civilians on it on CNN and FOX, and even MSBC. Although I would not put above Kimmie to just randomly make an attack.

A. North Korea could NOT forcibly reunite Korea, and then go and seize the entire Eastern Pacific (minus China)
B. The United States is too full of crazy people and patriots to shatter like that.
C. The U.S. dollar cannot tank that easily. The U.S. dollar is one of the most important currencies to date. If America's dollar dies, the rest of the world follows suit. EVEN CHINA.
D. North Korea has a mere 24million people, and still uses old Soviet-era weaponry. Contrasting to South Korea, who have F-16 fighters, and have a population of 48 million, (about twice as much), and have the United States military there with them. Superpower.

Homefront is simply "shock and awe", "were all gonna die" kinda thing. The dude who wrote it, also made Red Dawn, and impossible story, where the Soviet Union, in 1984, manages to stop the demise of communism (which began after the invasion of Afghanistan in 1979), spreads their influence through out Asia and South/Central America. It also says that in 1984, the United States is invaded by Cuba (Not happening. Cuba would get SQUASHED), Communist Mexico (Mexico? China isn't going to sit around and see North Korea, a country at it's borders get fucked up by Americans, whom China dislikes, but still trades with for money. There's a reason China is still called the People's Republic, study China more. (Yes I know China is becoming very Capitalist.)

The fact being, North Korea is on their own. China is not willing to shatter a economic connection between the Americans and themselves, since China and America need each other to prosper.

If there were only civilians on it, then how did two South Korean marines die?

The attack was well calculated, not random, North Korea wants to bring the United States and South Korea back to the negotiating table, so it needs their attention.
