Striketober: Workers of the world unite!

Postby Dakini » Fri Oct 22, 2021 2:06 pm

At present, there are a lot of workers on strike or workers threatening strikes for better pay, better conditions, better hours and so on. This has somewhat been dubbed Striketober, though that appears to be mostly applied to strikes ongoing in the USA (the big ones right now are John Deere workers, Kellogg's, some health care workers and there was a narrowly-avoided strike by the iatse (though it's not clear if that deal is going through, it's currently tentative as far as I can tell).

Outside the USA, there was a general strike in South Korea involving half a million people with further action planned into the new year, port workers and school teachers in Congo are on strike, Scotrail workers and Glasgow's bin workers are going on strike during the COP26 summit to be held in Glasgow and I suspect there are a lot of strikes I'm missing out on.

Personally, I think this is all great. Workers everywhere and in every industry have been underpaid, overworked and not given sufficient respect or support for a long time. Worker safety has been an issue in many industries and the conditions do not seem to have been improving. All this even though worker productivity is always increasing, it's just been decoupled from wages and economic inequality has been increasing, including during the pandemic.

All workers deserve a fair wage, reasonable hours and working conditions that are both safe and not causing undue stress. If their employers won't give these things to them, then they should deprive their employers of their labour (imo).

But what do you all think?

Love how the company tried to replace the union workers who were operating heavy machinery with non-union office workers.

Yeah, that's both ultra shitty of them and a good reason that the USA should have proper universal healthcare.

Also, they had forced their office workers to work in the factory and they immediately caused an accident.

Which is really just an indication that their office workers should also be unionized so they wouldn't be forced to do work they're not trained to do properly.

Its harder to unionize managers in the states. When I worked for foreign companies their European management was somewhat unionized. Similar positions in the
States were not. Which actually hurt me as its much harder to layoff a unionized European than an American.

I'm not sure that all of the office workers are managers. They could be customer service workers and the like.

But being harder to fire is definitely a good reason to be unionized.

I’m fairly confident that the IATSE agreement will be voted down by the membership. I’m not IATSE (I should be…) but all my friends who are are pretty angry about the deal. And now that Alec Baldwin shot three people killing one thanks to shitty conditions on set that included the IATSE members walking off the set six hours before, they’re only going to get angrier because that kind of shit was what they were talking about.

On the bummer side, because i need to go back to set, but I’m 100% on their side for this, I hope they vote it down and get a real agreement.
"...I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." -MLK Jr.

I think all workers deserve their fair wages or just an increase in their salary as well as decent conditions so they can work with... You know, the basic stuff they need at the very least. I know there is a lot of inequality but let's not get way too ahead of ourselves and also be reasonable with the terms
