Also Powell was the major anti-war figure within the Bush admin and he only agreed to go along with the invasion if the plan was moderated to include an international coalition and majority public support. As far as I am aware, he wasn't given much time to actually look over the intel about WMD claims in Iraq before he made his speech and his constant clashing with people like Rumsfeld leading up to the war is what got him fired. I mean the rest of the admin didn't even want to bother trying to get UN support until Powell forced them to at least try.

He himself later regretted having agreed to support the war and treating him in the same category as Rumsfeld and Bolton just shows a lack of knowledge about the build up to the Iraq War and a hilariously puritanical code.

Calling Powell a "major anti-war figure," especially in light of what you said immediately afterward, is nonsensical revisionism. Anti-war is not a conditional position to hold; he was absolutely pro-war in that regard.

And he never would have made that speech to begin with if he was anti-war, either. That's an utterly ridiculous notion. He, like the Bush administration wholesale, lied and facilitated the murder, torture, rape, maiming, and suffering of millions of people.

Yeah he was. People in the Bush admin were seeking to invade Saddam since the start of Bush II's presidency which he actively fought against. Powell originally sought to prevent and then when that became unavoidable tried to limit its insanity which is why he drew lines in the sand about forgoing the UN entirely and not invading without a coalition force and public support. Warned Bush numerous times about how it was the wrong thing to do.

Further as I said he later regretted his role in selling the war.

It's a big red flag when someone is often vaguely described as "patriot".

Is that in response to 'big red flag'?
Because if so that was actually pretty funny.

I don't care whether or not he drew a line at not supporting war until the public and other countries got bloodthirsty; he still supported war at the end of it all. So it doesn't matter.

Neither do his regrets, for that matter. Go and ask the dead in Iraq how they feel about his regrets. Tell us their answer once they give it to you.

I just wanted to say thank you to the UK for giving us Tony Blair, who didn’t listen to the hard left in his party when it came to Iraq.

But notably, not the American public— do you think the mass public’s level of support for the war would’ve been as high as it was without elite guidance of the kind Powell helped provide? If the President wasn’t listening and he thought it was wrong, at a certain point you have to ask whether the man saw himself as serving the American public or working for something else.

Further as I said he later regretted his role in selling the war.

Certainly a bigger deathbed regret than most.
FUCK YOU. STAND WITH ME. NO MEATBALLS, NO LAMPS. WE ARE ALL LOSERS. COINCIDENCE IS SUBSIDENCE.

Maybe but at the same time it's a pretty understandable reaction to everything that's happened since. an "oh my bad" doesn't exactly help the millions whose lives were ended or destroyed as a result of his and his colleague's actions. "anyone who supported the iraq war in any way at any time is a bad person" is hilariously puritanical, "man, fuck these guys" isn't.

I mean, if we're going to go down the list of "people most culpable for the Iraq War", there's quite a few people I'd put in the dock before Powell.

If I spent my time and energy being angry at all of them equally, I'd never do anything useful. Pretty much every major American institution was complicit in that fuck-up, so it seems a bit redundant to focus solely on one person (though I do get it, believe me).
