Last Season - It is fair to say that the Virtus’ season slowly collapsed, like a flan in a cupboard. The off-season had been more than rough, with star player Salvatori jumping ship towards nemesis Catrallo Calcio: the workers club got financially snubbed by the team from the bourgeoisie, the fans cried. Yet it was a sign from a different reality, that Virtus - due to mismanagement and waning funds - slowly slipped out of the Big Three. Only confirmations of that followed: young striker Canova chose the thrill of the relegation battle in Brenecia over a prolonged stay in Redoccio and in the Serie Nazionale, seven losses were recorded. The most in twelve years. For a while, it was hard to find the right person to blame, but eventually the choice fell on Alberto Sgarbi. Brought in with a lot of fanfare, he didn’t deliver at first and then crashed head first with the manager Enrico De Valeris. Sgarbi’s talent remains unquestioned, but the relation with Virtus was indefinitely sour.
Things went from bad to worse. In the Coppa, the amateurs of FC Orsi easily disposed themselves of the major Virtus despite playing with ten men for half the game, leading to a second managerial change: U18 coach Valentini would end the season as caretaker. But he could not avoid that on the ultimate matchday, they kicked in their own windows with a home loss against Esca Unione which saw the Strawberries end up outside of the IFCF tickets. A disgrace for a side of their stature, to say the least. There are a lot of mitigating elements to call: Stramaccioni and Zsinko being too much the same type and failing to find the right chemistry, defensive leader Pinna suffering a career-ending injury, … But the summary is that the dressing room felt like sand with the old capo’s failing to make it one group and the youngsters not grabbing the opportunities left. A dark season in their history.
Targets and Means - And yet, Virtus Redoccio kicks off with high ambitions once more. In part because it is the nature of the team that, grounded in the docks and factories of the port city, grew into one of the powerhouses of the league. But mainly due to the financial injection from Odiol, the Juven shipping manufacturer that expanded its market. They not only invest in the Coppa Odiol - the friendly cup between Juvencus and San Ortelio - but also in the biggest club of the city where their main Ortelian wharf is located. According to the rumours, after the takeover, they found an organisation which doesn’t even pass the bar for professionalism in a country like ours and a shambolic financial structure. As such, the first focus seems to have been on changing things behind the screens, with significant investments in the stadium, the youth development and the marketing branch.
On the pitch, the Odiol management was limited considering a set of long-term contracts but they did make their mark with the appointment of Albino Romero. The former international has been a left midfielder for AC Vinceti - currently better known as Odiol Vinceti, closing the circle. It will be his first position as a head coach but he inherits a group that, considering the present talent, has more in store than previously shown. Having to sell Sgarbi, considered the biggest problem in the dressing room, at half his price to Calcio was tough to swallow but that Romero can look past those sensitivities and focus on the result might be in his advantage in the long run. The defensive rebuilding starts with the addition of Mallerbury, a versatile Ko-orenite who should link up with the clever, but very inaccurately named Pace. Both the left- and right-back are internationals and the same goes for Serafino Evacuo who didn’t have his best season but cannot have lost his mojo at 30.
Due to this, there might be more headaches to be had about the midfield. In theory, the “two Alberto’s” had been brought in for the attacking impulses but the faith of Sgarbi is known and Di Cosmo showed prodigy but also completely failed to show up in some key matches. Yet, the impulses will need to come from the man with razor sharp infiltration. Behind him, it’s the known double lock in Confalonieri and Fazio - despite the fading quality from the latter. Much is expected from Francesco Bagheria, a crafty fellow and still considered as a not fully finished product, but he’s more of a useful multitool than a goalgetter. So for that all eyes are on the new attacking pairing. Zsinko scored at a good rate last year but couldn’t dominate the big games - the Pasargan will now get the support from newcomer Péricard, whose agility should open up more space whilst also knocking in his goals. The bench isn’t half-bad but apart from Mirarchi and Stramaccioni, they definitely are less than the starters. This should open up opportunities for the younger generation: as the Primavera squad became national champions, two players were promoted and a few others are waiting in the wings. Most notable of them is Alessandri, still only seventeen but a potential worldbeater. With those good signals, Virtus fans hope that their squad can worry Catrallo Calcio already this year. That seems too ambitious, the Strawberries should focus on long-term building, aiming for the Coppa and an IFCF ticket in the first place. A major advantage for them is that Odiol is in it for the long run and should have the patience to allow Romero to grow and improve with his squad.
