Alvesen’s double secures points against Graentfjall
By Jaukka Halanen
Savojarna’s U-21 team appears to have a clear star, and it’s not surprising: Lars Alvesen, despite his young age, is already a SFS A regular; and at Partisan Sjoedrhavn no less. In Starblaydia, the young striker shows why he is a starter in the dominating team of the league, using his physicality and game sense to strike twice against Graintfjall in a difficult matchup that saw Savojarna pressured through offensive play… and through using their weirdly small size to throw off Savojarna’s defence. As much as it might have yielded an aerial advantage for Savojarna - which they couldn’t really use much thanks to the badger Duskborn being surprisingly adept at disturbing his opposition, and the slight confusion and frustration arising from the many times a ball went flat after contact with one of Graintfjall’s hedgehog players.
The latter also turned out to pose an issue for the Savojar players more directly, as Alvesen noted early on after contact with the centre-back Jed. Jumping aside somewhat startled as three bloody spots emerged under Alvesen’s socks, the interaction led to some heated debate between the two captains and the referees, before the refs decided that it was part of Jed’s natural movement when aiming to get the ball that he would come close to the opponent, and any prickling that didn’t arise from unfair contact or intentional charging at the legs of his opponent would be a natural consequence of Jed trying to play the game. Fair and inclusive as the ruling might have been (and it was accepted by the Savojar side, as well) it clearly harmed the capacities of our offence, as Vedmark and Alvesen struggled to put down the speed and strength respectively that makes them strong.
In defence, Savojarna struggles with the speed and agility of the small Graentfjaller side, and creativity of some of their players. The 1-0 stunned everyone as the winger Dimpy first dove between the legs of Alvin Strid to cross the ball to the middle, where the other winger Kit Churchmouse flung himself off the goal post to beat Vikarby to the ball and scored by a bicycle kick that a stunned Savojar keeper couldn’t do anything against, other than being surprised by it. Again, debate ensued out of confusion, and understandingly the goal was left standing as no rule was broken. While Alvesen could equalise after shouldering away Duskborn and scoring with a kick too high for Burgle to stop, the Graintfjallers took the lead again thanks to a new problem rising up for Savojarna: The challenge of not committing fouls when having your opposition between your legs and having unfamiliar body shapes. It was clearly an accident that Vikarby stepped on the tail of striker Lissa, but that would not change the fact that stepping on someone’s tail usually results in a yellow and a penalty. A penalty that was converted.
Now down 2-1 again, Savojarna resorted to high balls - high balls that somehow were defended. Kit Churchmouse, being reassigned to defence, was sweeping out all sorts of crosses swinging from goalposts and crossbars. Then, when the aerial defence appeared to crack and Alvesen and Orakhin both almost headed a ball into the goal, their coach pulled out yet another trick: the sparrow Tumbles, a winger by the match sheet, came out in defence as well. Flying above the battlefield it was no issue for her to match Alvesen’s human height, and any attempt at using his physicality tended to result in fouls. Aerial play was not going to be the winning move against a bird, and another change was required. Eventually, though, things worked. Tretjakov managed to chip a ball over Jed, who was now unable to stop Alvesen by pricking his legs once again; Duskborn had to notice that a prepared physical human striker would be able to withstand his tackles, and Burgle had to concede his second goal.
Nonetheless, Savojarna’s state is still dire, with only two points from the first three games, and the next matches against Pemecutan and Starblaydia are must-win games. With only the top two teams qualifying, Savojarna are on the brink of elimination, but striving to somehow, maybe, make miracles work.
