I have a line that has something to do with Texas, probably get me a warning, so no, but thanks for the set up. It was a grand one.

Yesterday NZ had one case... now it's five. One of whom is a fully vaccinated nurse at Auckland City Hospital.

At this stage, they're all close contacts of a close contact of the first case, though since they've confirmed it's Delta, the distinction between close and ordinary contact is trivial. And, of course, no-one knows how the first case got it.

I'm just going to say it... vaccines are maybe going to reduce the number of symptomatic cases, but they're evidently not effective enough at preventing the spread. And, I'm sure, because of this, there will be a new strain one day where we say "last year's vaccines are now ineffective". It'll probably come out of a country like the UK or the US that's acting like vaccine normalcy exists. Does anyone know if there's a major effort to produce an anti-Delta vaccine out there?

I'm not going to say there aren't people like that, but I think the great majority of the vaccine hesitant made up their minds about it for several reasons. Some distrust science, some think they know better than the experts, some may think if they catch CoVID19 they'll shrug it off because ''their mom's first cousin's sister's boyfriend's uncle" said it was just a flu to them and didn't die. And some just don't care. By this I mean that money could be a factor, but it's not the drive for all.

Vaccines work. Get vaccinated. Get your folks vaccinated.

Just got a positive test back myself but I only have mild symptoms. So I'm at home just twiddling my thumbs. I do miss the smell of my coffee tho

That sucks. Hope you feel better soon.

Yeah, my uncle's the same. He's just bored out of his mind at a quarantine facility. And apparently, the food isn't that great. He still has his senses of smell and taste, though, so that's good.

No doubt. But some are also hesitant for the exact opposite reason: "why do they try to bribe us if the vaccine is good" and "nothing worth anything is given away for free" are often used phrases by many anti-vaxxers.

Though ofc anti-vaxxers often are dishonest about their motives.

I heard a take about why minorities would be hesitant to accept anything from the government, and I'd say it makes sense.

Politicians and media politicised the vaccine so much that it makes sense that if you've been properly fucked over by your government before you're hesitant, even in the face of sound logic, because these days also facts are politicised.

That made sense at the beginning of the rollout, but it is getting less and less understandable every day.

If the vaccine was some Tuskegee shit, they wouldn't be giving it to millions of white people. It's one thing if people think the government and society are racist, but they could still figure this out if they use their fucking brain for five seconds.

You can't fix stupid, but in some cases the fears people have supplants logic in an otherwise sound mind.

Getting angry at them is only going to vent our own frustrations and do very little in actually helping people that can (still) be helped.

No, getting angry and telling people to shut the fuck up and get their shot -- ordering them, not pleading with them and wasting time on their bullshit arguments -- will help people very effectively. Vaccinate people without their consent if we have to.

There's a time and a place for people to talk out their issues. And then there's a time and a place to just get shit done. Vaccine distribution in the middle of a pandemic when ICUs are running out of beds is the latter.
