NATION APPLICATION[/color]

Shortform name: Taikieng (泰岑)
Real life culture influence: Min Chinese (Fujian and such) + Tai peoples of China
Real life culture of former colonizer: None
Population: 72,416,256
GDP (PPP) per capita: $40,877
GDP (nominal) per capita: $32,526
Military manpower (active/reserve): 320,000/180,000
Language(s): Taikiengese (Fuzhounese), Siugoanese (Southern Min), Zhuang, Kam (or Dong)
Nation description: Taikieng first arose from the ashes of Tianqi, where warring states who claimed the Mandate of Heaven eventually unified in the late 900s under the Nuong dynasty (阮), whose Emperor claimed descent from a Tianqian prince, and thus claimed to be the legitimate successor to the late Tianqians. The Nuong undertook various military campaigns against the Mincangan states in the hope of capturing Danyang to rebuild it and eventually restore the Tianqian Empire. Upon the second Emperor’s death, these campaigns ceased due to them being ineffective and costly.

The Mincangan campaigns wasted a large amount of the Nuong’s resources, thus leading to an economic downturn in the late 1000s. Increased unrest led to several peasant revolts, which were crushed brutally by the Nuong. These crackdowns are remembered as the Bloody Killings (血殺) in Taikieng today, and several children’s tales used to intimidate the young include details of these massacres by Nuong imperial forces. This bloodshed only hastened the dynasty’s collapse, with a Nuong noble and general eventually leading a revolt in the west to overthrow the dynasty. This revolt succeeded, and in 1092, the Song (順) dynasty arose.

The Song also claimed to be the legitimate successors of the Tianqi due to them being closely related to the Nuong ruling family, but they pursued a more realistic approach to governance and expansion, only engaging in sporadic conflict with the Mincangan states. One of these wars led to the collapse of the first unified Mincangan state due to economic hardship. The Song dynasty was also the longest-lasting dynasty of Taikieng, ruling until 1703. During this time, the Song warred with the Zhuang and Kam peoples, completely annexing the latter in the 1630s and partially annexing the former's lands throughout its lifetime.

During the Song, Taikieng had a golden age during the 1400s, producing many works of literature and advancing in the sciences. Taikieng also began to explore the world to expand its commercial and political power, colonizing Rashnna, Lu’umijol, Rodasia, and more. In the late 1600s, a series of ineffective Emperors led to the collapse of the dynasty when the regent usurped the throne, creating the Ca (齊) dynasty. Like the Nuong and the Song, the Ca also claimed to be the rightful inheritors of the Tianqian Empire, even taking a character from their name. Due to the Song’s longevity, the Ca struggled to legitimize themselves, with several Song loyalist rebellions occurring in the first twenty years of the Ca. The western part of the country, under a Song successor state, eventually fell out of the Ca’s control. Both the Ca and the Western Song refused to give up, attempting to conquer the other in the 1730s. Due to this instability, Taikiengese global influence fell, but the Ca dynasty managed to retain control of its sphere of influence across the world.

Realizing that neither side could win, the Ca and the Later Song signed the [Insert town name here] Compromise of 1737. The Ca did so to unify the country and save what was now Eastern Taikieng’s global reach from collapsing, and the Later Song signed in order to secure themselves against a Mincangan invasion, as well as salvage whatever was left of their former power and glory. It was here where the Taikiengese diarchy was formed, with the Ca and the Later Song emperors ruling jointly from the planned city of Neging, located in the centre of the country.

Due to the constant power struggles of the diarchy, the bureaucrats and Confucian scholars on both sides gradually took more and more control over the court. They finally managed to politically eviscerate the Co-Emperors in 1801 in the Neging Coup, forcing them to sign over their powers to an Imperial Chancellor and thus becoming ceremonial monarchs.

The post-monarchical era was marked by the Industrial Revolution in Taikieng, political stability and increased prosperity. The Taikiengese colonial empire expanded greatly during this period, being at its zenith after the Eulhae War. Taking inspiration from Jeongmi, Taikieng introduced voting in 1814, and fully enfranchised its populace in 1884, so long as they could pass the voting exam. The exam was simplified more and more over time until 1916, when the whole of the population was granted suffrage. However, the Taikiengese Voting Acquisition Exam was repurposed for elections to the country’s upper legislative chamber, which remained restricted to educated individuals. In 1953, all college graduates were granted automatic voting rights for the upper chamber, with those who had not finished some form of higher education still requiring the test to vote for this upper house. In 1972, those students who had scored high on their Goko (i.e. Taikiengese Gaokao) were also granted automatic suffrage.

Taikieng seized some colonies from the Contingent Powers after the Eulhae War, Bakusai included. Taikieng’s main involvement in the war was in the Mincangan front, where, with Allied support, it eventually managed to push into Mincangan lands, capturing the ancient ruins of Danyang at the end of the war as the Nuong, Song and Ca had dreamed of. Both emperors conducted ancestral worship rituals in the ruins of Danyang, symbolizing that they had finally achieved the long-held desire (and, over time, delusion) of the various Taikiengese dynasties to succeed Tianqi, even if it was only in spirit. To this day, both royal families formally claim to be the legitimate successors of the ancient Tianqian Empire, but this is not taken seriously by most today, and the modern Taikiengese state has made no claims to any territories outside of its sovereign jurisdiction. Indeed, the Song co-emperor commented on this in the 1990s, saying that this claim was made to honour their ancestors and that they were not binding in any legal sense.

Eventually, the Taikiengese colonial empire collapsed slowly during the first half of the 20th century. Some countries left peacefully, whilst others were let go due to rebellions. Today, Taikieng is a prosperous Sinju nation with a global impact on the world’s history.

Real life culture influence: Qing Dynasty
Real life culture of former colonizer: None
Population: 27,433,961
GDP (PPP) per capita: $7,439,504,390
GDP (nominal) per capita: $10,500

Nation description:

The Kingdom of Piongsan (平山王國; Piōngsán Wŏnggou) is a country located in northwest Jungju. It borders Hausan to the north, as well as bordering Sansiao and Zhuigo to the west. During the Cheonje Period, Piongsan was a major agricultural region for the empire. The fall of Cheonje marked the beginning of the Three Kingdoms Era in Piongsan. Three distinct kingdoms; Tiaojou, Jim, and Menji. These kingdoms all sought to subjugate each other, believing that the others had all lost the mandate of heaven. In Yuwol of 985 Tiaojou led the decisive Battle of Hauchun during which General Ho pushed his forces far east near the coast. After staging a coup, General Ho crowned himself emperor of Tiaoging. Throughout the middle ages Tiaoging was faced with multiple invasions from its neighbors, though they were never able to advance far into the country. In 1539 Prince Miong Ji-fei usurped the thrown from his brother, and founded the Piongsan Dynasty.

In 1920 Piongsan's monarchy collapses, thus allowing for a constitutional government to form. After the Eulhae War the monarchy was reinstated as a ceremonial role. Piongsan in the modern day is a rich country with decent healthcare and a high standard of living. It's also part of the Sinju Union. The prime minister is Liong Zhi-hua. Piongsan maintains close relations with Lomtai, as well as other South Jungjuan countries.

Real life culture of former colonizer: Thai

Nation description: Hyabaen, formally known as the Hyabaen Autonomous Disputed Territory is an independent region of the Republic of Lomtai. The territory, in Lomtai and Suwannaphum known as Hyabaen Province is currently disputed between the two, with each seeing Hyabaen as their respective sovereign land. During the Communal Era due to rising conflict in Hyabaen province's anti-communal administration with the federal government, Hyabaen declared itself independent from Lomtai, though was shortly reconquered by Suwannaphum. In 1949 Hyabaen broke away from Suwannaphum, and officially declared independence. In 1975 the State of Hyabaen was re-absorbed into Lomtai. The Hyabaenese are heavily opposed to Lom and Suwannaphumese rule, and have attempted large protests and riots to declare independence. In Chirwol of 2005 Hyabaen was granted a high degree of autonomy, though there have been recent attempts to fully break away from Lomtai once and for all.

NATION APPLICATION

Shortform name: Karymanymas (lit. 'Land of Karymany(s)', improvised ethnonym from a corruption of 'kelu' birch + 'lomany' person [then -mas "land"])
Longform name: Karymanymasyëny Minygxoky (lit. 'Republic of Karymanymas', from Min Chinese 'mingguok' republic)
Real life culture influence: Melting pot of Mordovian (predominant), Caucasian Romani, and Circassian cultures
Real life culture of former colonizer: Min Chinese ('Taikieng')
Population: 10,083,714
GDP (PPP) per capita: $18,793
GDP (nominal) per capita: $4,498
Military manpower (active/reserve): 126,000/330,000
Language(s) (in order of relevance): Karymanyan (=Mokshan), Taikiengese (=Fuzhounese), Zhanëyan (=Circassian languages < Zhaney tribe), Kesalian (=Caucasian Romani < kesali "forest spirit"), Nuki (=Manchu; historically and nowadays declining)
Nation description:

Karymanymas was initially the homeland of only the Zhanëyan (=Circassian) people, who lived in tribes. As Nukigurun united its city-states and expanded militarily towards the west, the Karymany people were in continuous conflict with Nuki officials, so much that they split off from the rest "Uralic peoples" and began emigrating to the southeast. By the 16th century, they had crossed the Damhae Sea and arrived to settle in the Zhanëyan lands. Due to their prior contact with Nuki peoples, the Karymany were more knowledgeable and technologically advanced; the Zhanëyan people could not oppose them.

The Karymany "generously uplifted" the Zhanëyan peoples in exchange for minor tributes, in the process creating a Karymany dynasty according to Nuki standards. The dynasty was competent enough to form regional trade routes (partially due to Nuki ports surrounding the Damhae Sea) and lead military campaigns against foreign states with varying success. Kesalian (=Romani) peoples were either taken as captives from wars, or immigrated to Karymanymas from other central Yojuan conflicts. In the early 20th century, the Karymanyan monarchy began conceding powers to local governors in an effort to industrialize. Discovery of oil deposits short thereafter prompted Nukigurun to fund Zhanëyan insurgency groups, who successfully overthrew the monarchy a few years before Eulhae. Karymanyan was hence made a Nuki satellite state.

In the central Yojuan theater, Allied powers such as Taikieng and Meisaan (and maybe Zangkai too?) bombed and occupied Karymanymas, in counter-attack to Nuki aggressions. At the conclusion of Eulhae, Taikieng was granted Karymanyan as a protectorate. Oppression under the Taikiengese republic motivated the natives to idealize Karymanymas as was before ethnic disputes, and led to collective rebellions in 1961, 1967, and 1971, when Taikieng finally resigned the lands (third time's a charm!). The modern-day Karymanymas Republic is a semi-periphery welfare state modelled mostly after Taikieng, ranking well on literacy, income equality and human development indices, but suffering from poor administration and extremist-terrorism. Its oil deposit has turned out to be minuscule in comparison to other lands, and the country instead gains more income from exportation of precious and complex ores (steel, gold, silver, titanium, cobalt, antimony), as well as from the tourism industry.

NATION APPLICATION

Shortform name: Hana'ea (干耒)
Longform name: Kakugafua Hana'ea (國革夫干耒) ["Independent State of Hana'ea"]
Real life culture influence: Polynesian (e.g. Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu)
Real life culture of former colonizer: Han Chinese
Population: 42,178
GDP (PPP) per capita: $5,338
GDP (nominal) per capita: $4,212
Military manpower (active/reserve): 200/0
Language(s): Hana'ean (Polynesian conlang--similar to Tongan); Mandarin (common second language); Korean (common only in tourism sector)
Land Area: 75.07km^2
Nation description:

Hana'ea, officially the Independent State of Hana'ea, is a small country and archipelago comprised of two atolls. The larger of the two, after which the country of Hana'ea is named, is comprised of five islands surrounding a 231km^2 lagoon and is home to the nation's capital Ko'otea (formerly Baibao) as well as roughly 80% of the country's population. The remainder of the population lives 80km northwest in Manau (which has a 13.73km^2 lagoon).

Centrally located in the Western Ocean, Hana'ea represents the far western extent of Polynesian civilization, initially settled around 900 CE and further populated by an additional wave of settlement in the fourteenth century. These seafaring peoples brought with them a civilization centered around taro cultivation, fishing, and trade. They also introduced an oral tradition centered around ancestor worship, which continues to influence the islands' religious disposition. One aspect of this culture was a tradition of tattooing, which is expressed in the pattern that traverses the post-independence Hana'ean flag.

The earliest records of contact with people from Sinju begin in the late seventeenth century. Among these early visitors were fishermen, traders, whalers, and occasionally travelers to and from Namju. In 1743, the first Buddhist monastery was established on the island, marking the beginning of a long period of exposure that has profoundly influenced religion on the island; Buddhism (usually of the Pure Land school) has been syncretized with the traditional religious beliefs of the island and has become the most commonly identified-with religion in the country.

In the 1770s, a section of land on the main island of Hana'ea was leased to agents of the Tianlong Dynasty for the construction of a small seaport. The agreement was later expanded to accommodate a small garrison, which was housed in the small white fortification from which the name Baibao (and consequently, Ko'otea) derived. This arrangement lasted for several decades but became strained with the growing significance of Hana'ea as a regional coaling station. As Baibao grew, the local chieftains of Hana'ea became increasingly resistant to Longzhou influence. This was in turn used as pretext for expanding the political power of local Longzhou officials, which was mainly accomplished by taking advantage of power squabbles among the Hana'ean villages. This culminated in a 1838 Treaty of Friendship, which formally turned the islands into an administrative subject of Longzhou.

Such an arrangement would last in name if not in practice for over a century. During the period from 1838 to independence, the only flag to fly over Hana'ea was that of the Tianlong Emperor. Yet as Hanaea's significance as a coaling station diminished, it was mostly left to administer itself. This period of benign neglect, during which local village leaders began to reassert their position, continued for several decades. Coupled with increased pressure at both the local and international levels for Longzhou to withdraw from its colonial holdings following the Great Eulhae War, this prompted the country to formally recognize the independence of Hana'ea in 1958, bringing an end to over a century of direct colonial rule.

Today Hana'ea operates as a unitary semi-presidential republic. Despite its decline in strategic significance, the country has been able to develop a flourishing tourism industry, with tens of thousands from across the world traveling each year to visit its white sand beaches and extensive coral reefs. Dealing with the erosion caused by such high levels of tourist activity is a pressing concern for current governments, as is the ever-present threat of sea-level rise due to climate change.

It is a single-party, communist state ruled by the Workers Party of Pioneraan (Pioneraan Creole: 工人黨平壤; Partéu Rhen d’Pioneráan).

Pioneraan originated as a medieval kingdom, Deválos, which was one of West Yoju’s great powers at the time. In 1739 a number of Meisaani junks arrived on the western shore of Devalos, as it had turned out, the Meisaani frontiersmen and soldiers had mistaken Devalos for the Laai colony. Soon enough, Devalos became overrun with Meisaani settlers causing problems for the regular citizenry. Meisaani settlers were often arrested for causing havoc, some were even executed. In late autumn of 1755 Meisaani forces launched a full-front invasion of Devalos. Within a few weeks the capital had fallen, and the royal family had been killed. Initially Meisaan incorporated Devalos into to Laai colony, though had made the decision to constitute a new colony which encompassed all of Devalos. In the weeks following the establishment of the Pingrang colony (Pioneraan Creole: 殖民地平壤; Côhméndènt d’Pioneráan) a number of revolts had occurred throughout the region. While the local Meisaani forces were able to quelle the revolts, Pingrang still remained a highly unstable colony. Pingrang was highly valuable due to its abundant agricultural resources. As a result of decades of slowly rising tension and aggression, a massive revolt against the Meisaani colonizers erupted across Pingrang. The revolt lasted for eighteen months in what is known as the Pingrangan-Meisaani War (Pioneráan Creole: 衝突平壤美山和; Khongflíu d’Pioneráan Meitháagne-hé). Meisaan implementation oppressive policies upon the native populace, as well as extreme punishments pertaining to all forms of political dissodence.

During Eulhae dozens of independence movements emerged all over Pingrang. These protesting groups eventually united under one man, Carlos Aiza (磚強). Carlos advocated for the independence of Pingrang, and for the founding of a communist state in the region. While Meisaan was willing to grant Pingrang independence, the Meisaani government refused to do so if a communist government were to take form afterwards. After Meisaan’s failed attempt to install a capitalist government, the pro-independence movement declared Pingrang an independent, communist state. On 22 Siwol, 1960 the People’s Federal Republic of Pioneraan declared war of Meisaan. The war lasted for two years, with Meisaan losing.

In the present, Pioneraan is a single-party, communist state in West Yoju. It is one of the richest countries in its respective region.

Standard Italian and other Italian dialects rendered as dialects of Saënan. In colloquial speech, one typically code-mixes Hokanese with Saënan.
Nation description:
First proto-Yojuan peoples in Ioccuèighe arrive around 7000 BCE. They settle in the mountainous north and survive out of animal husbandry and hunting, but a volcanic eruption some 1,000 years later forces them to descend. The central and southern peninsula is since inhabited by Saënic peoples (Italic peoples), who in the process learn develop agricultural and fishing methods. As the north is abandoned by Saënics, it is in return occupied by Gwaelic (Celtic, "Gauls" so to speak) tribes. The Cisran people in the centralwest peninsula gain the upper hand after inventing aqueducts circa 2000 BCE. The Cisran are reluctant to share their knowledge with other Saënic tribes and the first extensive military conflicts ensue.

Cisrans begin by conquering the south, by 1200 BCE it is completely subjugated. Without pause, they push northwards. Some Saënic tribes seek refuge to the Gwaelics, others flee further north (see e.g. Lower Laai Republic, Kartavia). By 200 BCE, all the modern-day lands had been annexed, but Cisrans faced a standstill as Soraic (Germanic) forces beyond the mountains were better equipped. Around 150 BCE, an empire (divided in governorates per distinct ethnic groups) was proclaimed. From 150 BCE to the 1400s, the empire faced various ups-and-downs; the Saënic islands (Turriron and Tinettu) were annexed, campaigns were led against Sora (some successful, others humiliating), peasant revolts occurred along with some unfortunate attempts to republicanize the empire, civil wars emerged out of commercial rivalries between governorates, paganist churches tried to steer the empire to their control... Still, the empire was a model for other West Yojuan countries to imitate.

A megadrought struck Ioccuèighe in 1420, as the Tiandian planet entered a global warm period, and caused famine throughout the empire. Although nominally under Cisran control, the governorates were gaining practical autonomy quickly and the political climate was fragmented. By the time Ioccuèighe was first discovered by Hokanese sailors in the mid-1500s, the megadrought had subsided but its effects -- disunity in particular -- were still evident. Ioccuèighe was geostrategically important as a "seaport nation", in which Sinjuan ships could rest before continuing their travels (westwards to Yeongju, northwards to Northwest Yoju, southwards to Miju, etc.) or (in the later colonial years) transfer supplies to prominent colonies. Therefore, in the late 16th century, Hokan invaded the Ioccuèighean peninsula, instating an imperial governor in charge of the southern polities. The northern areas were never ultimately occupied; the Hokanese were perhaps aware of their dependency on the south. For two centuries since, Hokan was able to profit from port fees, tariffs, and governorate surplus products.

Political upheaval in Hokan (military loss against Jeongmi and secessionist movements in the mainland) in the late 1800s weakened the grip on Ioccuèighe. The Ioccuèighean colony was formally discontinued in 1887; some Hokanese communities had nonetheless settled down permanently and remained active in the peninsula's politics. A native empire was briefly reinstated, this time under Saënic nominal control but Hokanese locals' guidance. But only three years later, with the news of Hokanese withdrawal having reached Sinju, the peninsula was blockaded by the Kuibo Trading Company (of Confederated Mincang). At the time, Kuibo's salt deposit was being depleted rapidly with industrialization, the society turned toward Ioccuèighe's untapped natural salts to maintain profits. From the 1890s up until Eulhae, the KTC had de facto control of the whole peninsula and oversaw amendments in the flawed Hokanese model of governance.

When Eulhae concluded with Mincangan defeat, Ioccuèighe was declared an independent republic. But with Sinjuan communities essentially forming an aristocracy after owning much of the country's industries and guilds, the republic's elections were perpetually considered dissatisfactory by the common people. The fascist movement thus gained traction, promising to return power to the Ioccuèighean natives. In 1988, a fascist coup d'etat was indeed successful, and ever since the fascist party has been ruling autocratically with sham elections. In reality, the government since co-operates with the Sinjuan wealthy class in many affairs, and as a result, little has been done to address the poverty, lack of freedom, and poor human development in the nation. More recently, Taniilux has taken interest in Ioccuèighe and its development (through investment in industries and immigration), partially due to ideological similarities.

Real life culture influence: Ethiopic/E. African conculture
Real life culture of colonizer: tbd
Population: 43,563,846
GDP (PPP) per capita: 21,888
GDP (nominal) per capita: 21,348
Military manpower (active/reserve): 30k active/90k reserve
Language(s): (Colonizer language), Araswi(swahili/amhara inspired)
Nation description:

Araswa, also known as the Confederation of Araswa, is an equatorial northeast Mijuan country of an estimated 43 million. The country is highly diverse, with over 100 recognized ethnic groups. The most populous city and capital of Araswa is Ajobi, with around 5.2 million inhabitants.

The Araswi Peninsula has been inhabited by humans for 300,000 years, historically functioning as a junction for trade and culture in the west. The aboriginal human inhabitants were complex hunter-gatherers and transhumanists, their descendant’s would be pushed into the deep mountainous interior with later migrations. Wealthy cities developed in late antiquity along the coast. Then starting in 800 BCE, a long series of bantu migrations toward Araswa began, with pastoralist migrants settling throughout the interior and on the coast. The Kings of early Araswi city-states were primarily Hindu-Buddhist with strong trade and cultural ties to the Tagol region. Notable peninsular Buddhist empires were the expansive Sri Pani Empire (480-1425) and successive Matungu Empire (1556-1698), with the Imperial Era divided into two periods; the Sri Pani and Matungu.

Various polytheist Kingdoms congruently rivaled each other in the west. By the 4th century however, Ezana dominated and declared itself a Holy Empire and the self proclaimed Negus Negast, King of Kings Mesfin Gebrekristos, converted to Christianity. What followed was the christianization of the northern coast and inland via trade and Gebrekristos's focus on sending missionaries across Miju and the east. Other rulers of city-states converted from Buddhism for political benefit. Cushitic groups in north-central Araswa often retained a degree of autonomy however, also dominating the agrarian countryside and maintaining Waaqeffenna religion, often syncretizing with Christianity in periods of imperial dominance.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, Araswi traders connected to the rest of the distant Buddhist world through explorers such as Apepo al-Din; sent as a delegate to the far east by a later Matungan King seeking trade prospects with distant lands. This would ultimately tie Araswa's fate. Merchants from Sinju started to arrive routinely in the 17th century, trading with the post-Sumtaar Habesha kingdoms and Matungu. After Matungu’s dissolution later that century, four kingdoms succeeded it in eastern Araswa.

The 18th century was a fractured period and the beginning of Sinjuization. Sinjuans favored Araswi luxury goods such as ivory, palm oil and coffee, as well as gold. By the 19th century, Sinjuan powers were rushing to control the Araswi trade. Even though Abrahamic power was waning, the Emara Kindgom dominated north Araswa from the beginning of the 1800s, contesting the growing popularity of Sinjuan philosophy, Confucianism and the re-emergence of Buddhism.1820-1860 was a period of marginally successful colonial incursions, with (Fusen or Mincang or Jeongmi) gaining control of several port cities. Later conflicts in the 1880s would organize local Kings under the dominion of colonist. Local rulers paid their tribute for autonomy, but became peripheral to colonial authorities and their power, acting more as middle-managers for the colonial administration and resource extraction.

Imperial Colonial rule in Araswa lasted until 1944, after a declaration of independence, with the Araswi ‘War for Freedom’ ending by 1949. The Revolutionary Assembly, overseen by a tribunal of leaders, was the highest collective authority in Araswa throughout the 1950s, with the formation of a central government happening alongside the ‘Araswi Social Revolution’. There was a great struggle toward equality and shifting social paradigms from the 1950s onward. The 1950s was an intense, chaotic period of dismantling caste, re-organizing of labor and social relations; but also a period of ethnic conflict and ideological feuding. The Social Revolution would define the second half of the 20th century for Araswa.

The current Confederalist government has been established since 1979. The Rajas, at this point, had either abdicated or been reduced to the status of traditional rulers. The Confederation since then is an amalgamation of autonomous self-governing municipalities and regions. They are bound by the constitutional ‘Social Contract’ - which establishes common institutions, law and defines Araswa as striving for liberty, equality and communalism among its inhabitants. Private property has been abolished for personal and common ownership. Many communities and coastal cities have liberalized since the early 2000s however, embracing the ‘Araswi Trade’. In the early 2000s, the National Assembly also gained broader legislative powers, while electing an executive ‘Central Council’. Many cooperatives and resources were also nationalized by 2007.

Today, the country is relatively prosperous and free by Sinju standards, but rife with growing tension as economic liberalization progresses. Climate Change in particular has had a large effect on Araswa, as nearly all major cities sit on a shrinking coastline with drought, intense flooding, large typhoons and long heatwaves becoming more frequent. Emigration from Araswa has been consistent since the economic struggles of the 1980s and 90s, however today Araswi migration is at its highest rate. For many Araswi, climate change, wealth disparities, tribal-nationalism, ethno- religious feuding, crime and the growing Pahvani-dominated government are top issues. As unrest persists, Araswa goes through another period of social change and adaptation.

Nation description:
Araswa is an ancient country that use to be a central hub for human migration across the Red Yi Sea. Since antiquity, people who settled on the coast became adept sailors and formed a well-networked trade in the area. Coffee(imported from the north in pre-history), iron, copper, gold, ivory, palm oil and hemp were the most exported goods Araswi traders were known for.

It was a very rich land, full of a variety of thriving societies and warring states. It’s why the Araswi Peninsula was sought after by Sinjuans in the late colonial eras; but also for it’s location, as it was one of the main commercial trade junctions in the Red Yi Sea. Araswa had proved difficult to conquer prior to 1850, as dense tropical forest, floodplains and an expansive river system covered the peninsula. What was known as the ‘Sri States’ by Sinjuans were also militarily strong, obtaining and manufacturing their own muzzle-loading rifles.

When Sinjuans began encroaching more aggressively in the late century, they had developed numerous, overwhelming advantages. From the breech-loading rifle, repeating rifle, to machine gun, to more advanced and deadly artillery, all with greater accuracy and range. Araswi range and tactics were not enough, so after nearly a century of fending the foreign prospectors off, the Sri States and the number of other kingdoms, states and nations fell.

Sinjuans found even greater use of Araswa not only for its strategic location (which could lead to wars over Araswa?), but for resources that were essential to industrialization. Palm oil highly sought after for machinery, coffee as simply a prized commodity, copper/rare earths and most of all, rubber. A slew of crops were also imported into Araswa from the east, the Peninsula soon becoming a large operation for rice, tubers, maize, plantain and beans.

Sinjuan rule was brutal, best summarized as a chaotic, 50+ year looting and raping spree. Hands were lost and the entire Peninsula was turned into a disorganized, poorly run plantation kept in check by violence and attempted sinocization, which succeeded to an extent in the now [sinju language]-speaking coastal cities. The Sinjuans one day were perceived to just leave, as the matters of the Eulhae War and post-Eulhae occupied them.

In the 1950s, a Confucian government emerged under a dictatorial leadership, suppressing many revolutionary communalist movements. From the 1920s, the anarchist and communist movements in Araswa grew. Despite repression, the BoL, Brotherhood of Labor, an organization of syndicalist unions, communalist cities and affinity groups, arose to challenge the government in the 50s. As unrest and fighting escalated, full-scale war was waged by the 60s in the Araswi Conflicts. Prompting multiple foreign interventions and lasting through to the 1970s.

The 80s saw a winding down of fighting, the old revolutionary movements had been weakened, the strange invaders had finally left and the region was collectively shocked from the horrors of the wars. Since then, no government has been able to centralize its authority in Araswa, any attempts leading to swft rebellions and dissolution. Araswa is now on its third, rather symbolic confederal government that has limited and challenged power.

To foreigners, Araswa is an ungovernable hellhole and by many indicators, it’s a failed nation-state. However, trade still thrives and investment proceeds controversially unimpeded by a central authority, only challenged by the stubborn BoL and enduring anarchist, who have struggled to re-ignite an active movement or revolution. There’s an overlapping of traditional community governance and customary laws that keep the order. A cosmopolitan wealthy sinju-speaking elite have re-emerged as well most notably in the large coastal cities, forming an affluent secret society that props up the Araswi commodities market. And though the BoL is seen as antagonistic, it has ceded many of its ideals, with BoL cooperatives working within a market economy that seeks to expand, often leading to tensions with the communal, autonomous interior.

However, Araswa has become much more unstable over recent years and emigration from the Peninsula has only intensified due to a stagnate to deteriorating standard of living, economic prospects, an abyss of wealth inequality and climate change. Araswa has been at the brunt of the climate crisis, experiencing an ongoing rainforest collapse, a more unlivable hot climate, a drought with no end in sight and food insecurity; with a kind of PTSD associated with the terrible famines from the colonial eras and Araswi Conflicts. What's worst, is that the low-lying Peninsula is expected to be heavily flooded, with rising sea levels disturbing most major cities in repeated disasters. The future Araswa is one of resistance, emigration and collapse.

Native shortform name: Ioccuèighe (in Saënan)
Longform name: 嶽膬斧頭民國 Nyotshe Fudeuminkoh (in Hokanese) / Yocuei Futoumingue (in Mincangan; 'axe-republic' => 'fascist republic')
Native longform name: Mincchò Fascisti d'Ioccuèighe (in Saënan)
Real life culture influence: Erturia and Italy
Real life culture of former colonizer: Hokan (=Wu Chinese), Mincang (=Sichuan)
Population: 21,433,744
GDP (PPP) per capita: $3,868
GDP (nominal) per capita: $1,413
Military manpower (active/reserve): 5,000 / 45,000
Language(s): Hokanese (=Wu Chinese; official), Mincangan (=Sichuanese; semi-official), Cisran (=Etruscan; semi-official), Saënan (=Corsican; semi-official), Turrian (=Sicilian; regional).

Nation description:
Ancient Wirchulichan people lived in house societies and depended mostly on coastal fishing and hunting, often coming in contact with ancient peoples in East Nambo, trading with them, and learning basic agricultural techniques from them. Around 4th century CE, house societies had grown considerably, and in some cases broke away from kinship rules entirely and became multicultural and ambilineal towns. Over the following centuries, competition in commercial and territorial affairs incentivized the first large expansions inwards, with Wasskitian (Selk'nam) people strategically claiming most of the forested mainland. By the 13th century, most towns had grown into distinct plutocratic city-states and tensions between them escalated with deforestation.

A series of wars (c. 1450 - 1550) did indeed break out, ending in nation-wide treaties that paved the way for more direct democracy in the decision-making of city-states. While the Wirchulichan population and economy suffered losses, the reforms would help tackle diseases brought into the island by Nambo and Qichwa through herd immunity. By the 1700s, Wirchulichan population was at a historical low, but had recovered from plagues some twenty years before the Cheongju mainland. Around the same time, Sinjuan explorers made trips around the continent and the Wirchulichan island, documenting their findings. Wirchulich, despite lacking the wealth of the mainland, attracted the interest of the Hokanese Empire, which sought to compete with other Sinjuan powers in colonization. Hokanese settlers gradually moved to southern Wirchulich, striking deals with the various city-states to help their weak state of affairs in exchange for land and goods.

By 1810, the Hokanese settlements spanned the entire island. In 1813, the Empire of Hokan signed a treaty with all Wirchulichan city-states, formalizing their protectorate status and territorial admission to the empire. The Wirchulichan lands were conceded to the natives after Eulhae, and the island has been a unitary republic since. Wirchulich industrialized rapidly with investment and trade from Nambo, and is now a relatively advanced free-market economy. The secondary economic sector is most sizeable, including the manufacture goods from domestic deposits (iron, zinc, lead, copper, manganese, tungsten, uranium), and the service sector is expected to surpass agricultural activity by 2030. Wirchulich's openness and diplomatic allegiance to Nambo, Namju, and Sinju are the subject of contemporary internal strife on the island.

Shortform name: Zangkai

Real life culture of former colonizer: Not really applicable, but notable influence from whoever ends up invading
Population: 21,436,625

GDP (nominal) per capita: $51,235
Military manpower (active/reserve): 66,000 active, 5,000 reserve
Language(s): Wenzhounese
Nation description: 4,000 years ago, a small fishing village was established in western Sinju. This fishing village would slowly grow over the millennia until it was the city of Zangkai, a quiet trading town known primarily for its more salacious trades. (This was a misconception -- fish, particularly carp, were always more widely traded in the city than anything iniquitous. Rumors die hard, however.) It, along with its smaller neighbors, would be traded between this or that empire for centuries, generally with little consequence to Zangkai itself. This would be until 1254, however, when a clique of nobles with high-minded ideals about republicanism would take advantage of the crumbling Feng Dynasty and create the perfunctorily-named Republic.

After establishing the Republic, the ruling nobles would work hard to turn its reputation from that of a place mainly to buy drugs, weapons, and women to a legitimate trading institution. This would be largely in vain until the age of exploration, when Zangkai was one of the first and most successful in building a trading empire with far-flung nations across the world. This would mark the Zangkainese Golden Age, when, in spite of its small size, Zangkai would leverage its wealth to establish trade routes and trading companies spanning the globe. It would never use this might into taking more territory for itself (beyond expanding its borders to feed its burgeoning population) or fighting with its stronger neighbors, however, preferring instead to buy their friendship.

A period of economic decline in the 1800s, however, would see political instability come to Zangkai, and a civil war was inches from breaking out before [X] invaded and occupied Zangkai in favor of the republic. In order to maintain peace, however, the invaders would come to rule Zangkai for the next 80 years, allowing the nobles to maintain their positions but subjugating the local population otherwise. This period of foreign rule would come to an end in 1893, when the ruling class of Zangkai was able to afford its independence and reestablish the Republic.

Today, Zangkai is a rich, multiethnic, unequal country, a series of gleaming megacities surrounded by countryside. Its economy is dominated by the service sector, particularly banking, gambling, and tourism. Its politics are as byzantine as ever, with the system opened to all citizens but only so far -- positions like the High Council and the Council Secretary being open only to the noble few. Zangkai enjoys a seat among the world's liberal democracies, a position it secures through the money flowing from them into itself. Occasionally criticized by the fringe left wing of the world, the nation by and large gets away with its inequality and illiberality, mostly by threatening to liquidate the assets of its critics.

Postby Anicesiaordia » Tue Aug 03, 2021 12:34 am

Shortform name: Anicesiaordia
Real life culture influence: South Korean
Real life culture of former colonizer: Malaysian
Population: 8,190,000
GDP (PPP) per capita: $3,911
GDP (nominal) per capita: $3,109
Language(s): Ordian, Korean
Nation description: Anicesiaordia, a nation full of different cultures due to its colonial history. First colonized by the Malaysians, it had a huge culture influence from the Malaysians that continued until it was conquested by South Korea. This resulted into the South Korean culture also being quite influential into the culture of Anicesiaordians, and a period of short conquest by the Chinese military due to the war against South Korea, was also taken over from the chinese and some culture influenced the region too. After the re-conquest by South Korea, the nation soon gained its independence and was mixed with all three cultures respectively, South Korean culture effecting the nation the most.
After the gaining of their independence, the nation became a civil rights haven, having extremely free civil rights such as allowing marijuana, allowing elections and generally being a very free democratic capitalist nation. Anicesiaordia although, has its flaws. Due to the very free political system, corruption and useless governments are very common to see. This has caused the people to start supporting more communist and dictatorship parties and elections, but a majority still believe that democracy is the way. The government being pretty corrupt results in most money being cashed in into their pockets, not really allowing much improvement on the economy, and results in the people being fairly poor out of Anicesiaordia, not really allowing offshore vacations to be very possible. A change is needed to the economy if this place wants to stay as a democracy, or else it will soon fall to communism, dictatorships, or other political systems that will dwindle its civil and political rights.
