KITS:
Home Kit:
Away Kit:
Big shout out to Ziwana for making this kit.
Sylestone will be using their home kits for the majority of the time, although if they come across a side who plays in a similar kit, they can change if need be.
OVERVIEW:
For just the second time, the Sylestone national human football team is leaving Sylestonean shores for the 30th Campionato Esportiva. The first time was for the Mike Sarzo Memorial Trophy, where they finished 3rd - the second edition in a row where Sylestone were able to reach a semifinal. However, a couple of years onwards, they have banded together once again to challenge for the most prestigious Esportivan title there is - the one for association football.

Nickname: The Hawthorns

STAFF:
Coach:
Eli Harman
Age: 38
Club Side: AFC Droves (Sylestone)
About: In all honesty, Eli Harman was quite a shock choice for this job. However, he is certainly a suitable one. His side, the AFC Droves, are favourites for promotion to the Toilet League this year - their side is certainly the strongest they have ever boasted. He places a large emphasis on stamina and endurance and is certainly not afraid to push the side to their extremes. This will be his toughest job yet, though, and whether he is up for it remains to be seen.
Manager:
Brian Murphy
Age: 46
Club: Capital FC (Sylestone)
About: Unarguably one of the best managers currently in Sylestone, Brain Murphy fully and wholeheartedly deserves this job. When it comes to tactics, he is one of the most shrewd out there. Currently, he is the manager of Capital FC and over the past three seasons, has led them to two titles. He prefers to give people a chance if they have a bad game, but likes to use his substitutions. He’s quite neutral and can really work with whatever formation, although prefers to lean slightly on the attacking side.
GOALKEEPERS:
Name Age Gender Club
Sean Halliday 32 M Rangers (Hebitaka)
Charlie Barrett 24 M Halpenley City FC (Sylestone )
Jonah Hickson 28 M WSR AFC (Ko-oren )
It was a tough selection to find the best three Sylestonean goalkeepers out there. Very tough. Sean Halliday pretty much had that starting spot sealed since talks even began, but Charlie Barrett, Jonah Hickson and Verity Cavendish of Betham FC were all left fighting for only two spots. In the end, Barrett and Hickson were selected over Cavendish, mainly due to their slightly longer reach and their respective never-say-die attitudes.
Halliday will be the starting keeper in the Hawthorns starting XI, continuing to perform over in Hebitaka for a couple of years now. However, there are some signs of him aging as he is already 32, and doesn’t seem to have the willingness to dive around as much anymore. If he has a bad game, Charlie Barrett at only 24 years of age will not hesitate to step in, with all 190cm of height on his side. He also still shows some signs of youth, though, which other teams may be able to exploit. Hickson is a bit of a mix of Halliday and Barrett. He has some of Halliday’s collectedness and a bit of Barrett’s determination, although doesn’t really excel in either department. He may be the third-choice goalkeeper in the side, but you can be assured he’ll be asking questions.
DEFENDERS:
Name Age Gender Club
LB: Lyla Holmes 31 F Chamberley City (Sylestone )
LCB: Janelle Oliver 28 F Chamberley City (Sylestone )
RCB: Joseph Tasserton 28 M Kinjestad Soccer (South Newlandia )
RB: Jack Townsend 26 M Bikarish (Poafmersia)
LB: Thomas Davis 23 M Valley Wanderers (South Newlandia )
LCB: Sophia Pearson 24 F Cleorough FC (Sylestone )
RCB: Mitchell Stevenson 24 M West Akusha CF (Bollonich )
RB: Luke Mitchell 30 M Halpenley City FC (Sylestone )
Despite there being a fair few surprise selections in this mix, the Sylestonean defence certainly looks quite formidable. At a first glance, there appears to be a lack of real weak links, although only the right-back position looks incredibly secure, with Jack Townsend and Luke Mitchell arguably Sylestone’s best two current defenders.
Lyla Holmes of Chamberley City has taken over the starting left-back position, due to Mason Steyn’s retirement from international football. After a brilliant season in South Newlandia where he was a substitute in the SNSL team of the year, Thomas Davis has come back from being a substitute for Dunkirk Athletic to a reserve for the national team, continuing his run to the top.
Janelle Oliver is undoubtedly the best centre-back in all of Sylestone, so she was a shoo-in for the starting XI. Joseph Tasserton as the other starting defender, though, was probably the most surprising selection in all. However, he’s looked good for a long time, and he’s certainly deserved it.
24-year-olds Sophia Pearson and Mitchell Stevenson - two players to play in the 48th and 49th edition of the Di Bradini Cup, will be joining Oliver and Tasserton respectively as the reserves for the centre-back position. There was quite a tussle to see who would get these spots, but in the end, the two of them deserved it.
Jack Townsend, following a reasonably successful season with Bikarish in Poafmersia, looking to expand his game to the next level, is joining the Sylestone lineup as one of their best and most experienced players, despite being only 26 years of age. At 30, Luke Mitchell is also quite an experienced player, but lacks something that Townsend appears to have, and is why he is being slated into the reserve spot.
As for tactics, the centre-backs may occasionally go on runs but one will almost certainly be the very last defender, while the wing-backs are likely to occasionally push forward when on the front foot. Overall, the wing-backs are generally the more aggressive and are more likely to be booked than Oliver or Tasserton and their reserves, although neither are afraid to go in for the tackle.
MIDFIELDERS:
Name Age Gender Club
CDM: Raphael Brown (c) 26 M Belgrave (Nephara )
LM: Cayden Holmes 23 M Elephant Valley FC (South Newlandia )
RM: Abigail Jones 21 F Omnio (Chromatika )
CDM: Penelope Battle 29 F Lakeshore (Quebec and Shingoryeo )
LM: Aaron Dodge 27 M Northport Meadows (Squidroidia )
RM: Amelia Turnbull 27 F Katham FC (Sylestone )
After transferring from Capital FC to Belgrave in Nephara, Raphael Brown has continued to improve immensely, with a calm head and brilliant general footballing skills that makes him an easy selection for this team. At 26 years of age, he still has many years left in him and he probably isn’t even at his heights. Brown will captain the Sylestonean side to the Campionato Esportiva as the defensive midfielder, where his main role will be threading balls out to the wings and through the opposition defence. A tough role if any, but something he will be able to pull off.
After being awarded player of the season with Capital FC a couple of cycles ago in the Toilet League and selected in the second team of the year in South Newlandia only recently, Cayden Holmes has been rewarded with a place in the starting XI over the experienced Aaron Dodge. He will be partnered by 21-year-old right midfielder Abigail Jones, who was selected following a strong season for Cleorough FC before being transferred to Omnio in Chromatika to further build her game.
Penelope Battle will play as the reserve defensive midfielder, although she can really play any position within the Sylestonean midfield if Murphy so insists. She has good ball skills and is a brilliant passer, and has a right to feel hard done by for failing to make the starting XI. Aaron Dodge hasn’t been playing too well in recent times, so Holmes will be starting over him while Amelia Turnbull is waiting on the bench after being an integral part of Katham FC’s breakout campaign last Poo League season.
The defensive midfielder’s main job is to try and thread the balls through to the forwards or out to the midfielders and wingers if possible - something both Brown and Battle are both certainly very capable of doing. All four midfielders also have a fair bit of pace to outstrip defenders when on the attack and are also sufficient passers and crossers when the need arises. It will be hard to break past them, but not entirely impossible.
WINGERS AND FORWARDS:
Name Age Gender Club
LW: Rose Fleetwood 23 F Raven River (Nephara )
RW: Valentine Cocher 29 M Pesfield Trees FC (Sylestone )
CF: Liam Cunningham 30 M Elephant Town FC (South Newlandia )
LW: Lucas Drover 31 M Betham FC (Sylestone )
RW: Savannah Edwards 33 F Avondale Beach SC (Sylestone )
CF: Harrison Gilchrist 22 M Alexandria City (Xanneria )
Rose Fleetwood, despite being a centre-forward by nature, has adapted to pursue a path as Sylestone’s left wing, using her pace to break through the defence. She has an excellent cross but isn’t quite as good as finishing as she was a couple of seasons ago, but certainly has a wealth of talent and experience under her belt following a season with Raven River in Nephara.
Valentine Cocher had yet another brilliant season with Pesfield and although he’s looking to move away, it certainly hasn’t hindered his chances of being selected for the Sylestonean national team for the 30th Campionato Esportiva. He’s currently in the prime of his career and has an excellent pass and cross although his finish could do with a bit of work. As for Liam Cunningham, he has a fair bit of finishing capabilities and will take most, if not all, spot and free kicks, although the wingers will take the corners. He’s not a great passer, but has some seriously good ball skills and can be a bit hot-headed at times.
Lucas Drover and Savannah Edwards are handy substitutes for Fleetwood and Cocher respectively and although they miss something the starters have, they are both certainly very good players, although they are beginning to age a bit. Each probably only has a few years left in them, but there are many upcoming forwards and wingers of whom will not hesitate to take their places when they eventually retire from international football.
Harrison Gilchrist, at only 22 years of age, is the final player in the Sylestonean squad. He’s been around for what feels like ages and has an immensely bright future as a forward, with astonishing pace to outrun almost any defenders that come in for the tackle. He’s quite a good passer and is a good finisher, too. He’s spent the last few seasons at Alexandria City in Xanneria to help develop his game, although he may well move away soon to really show his skills to the world.
The Hawthorns definitely have the forward lineup to really challenge the best defences in Esportiva, but they appear to lack the finishing prowess other nations have under their belt. If they can find it, Sylestone will be a joy to watch, but if not, then they may well flunk it out at the group stage.
It’s certainly a strong side, but the question is, is it strong enough? Because these guys have the ability to take it far, but whether they’ll be able to do it remains another question. Will they do better than the Sentients have in previous editions? Or will they fall at their feet?
