Imperial Palace and Grounds District, Mumbai

The Imperial Palace and Grounds District was a vast expanse of land in the heights in the center of Mumbai, eleven miles long and four miles wide at the widest, this vast expanse housed the Imperial Palace, nature reserves, an array out lesser buildings, and several barracks and other military installations of the Imperial Army. The Palace itself was a massive structure, built in homage to Indian architecture from before the Raj. An army of servants and guards manned the impressive structure, ensuring its smooth running and security.

Within the palace was where the Imperial Council often met to discuss matters, not a far journey for the high command of India's armed forces, its own supreme headquarters also located in Mumbai, just a short helicopter ride or trip by ground to the Palace grounds and then up to the palace itself. Under the palace were sprawling sub-terrain structures as well, though few knew the true extent of them.

This day was to see a very serious meeting of the top echelons of the Indian government and military, the usual traditional breakfast being skipped over for something quick and easy, moving right onto the meeting. Assembled were the commanders of the Indian armed forces, members of the Imperial Council, a few members of the Privy Council, and most importantly Her Imperial Majesty, the Empress.

“Needless to say, your Majesty, honored members of the Council, that the situation in the United States is simply disastrous. I don't think any of us thought the Americans would fracture to this extent, and this swiftly. We have been taking actions to try and mitigate the economic damage, and thankfully we have a sizable reserve of the Russian Ruble, but I fear we must take more decisive action if we are to mitigate the worst of the damage.

With this in mind I wish to present to Her Imperial Majesty the Ministry of Finance's recommended course of action. We will of course need your express approval to go ahead with the plan. The details will be found in the folder we submitted. In short, we believe it to be prudent to immediately cash out of the USD in all fields possible. Bonds, assets, cash reserves, everything we can off-load as fast as possible.” Minister of Finance Jwala Kamal said, clearly exhausted from the no doubt hellish amount of work he and his ministry have had to do over the past few days. There was a mumbling of voices around the table. The young Empress Amara I scanned the short document briefing quickly, before nodding.

“Do so, Minister. Go at once and call your ministry and instruct them to begin.” She said, calmly but resolutely. Minister Kamal bowed and swiftly left the table to make the call.

The Chief of Imperial Naval Staff, Admiral Rahul Divekar, was the next to speak. “Likewise, the war between Japan and China is concerning, and closer to home. Our patrols noted the passing of a British aircraft carrier battlegroup, and we are highly confident it is heading towards Hong Kong, no doubt to defend it from interference by both Japan and China as they fight their war. The navy would like to increase protection of our shipping lanes in the South China Sea, and anywhere else that might be effected.

With the economic hit the world is likely to start facing thanks to the United States, we believe it essential to maintain our local trade, regardless of this war. We should send a strong message to both sides not to interfere with our trade going to either nation. If they will heed the message will be up to them, but we've begun stepping up preparations in the navy and should shortly be prepared fully for any potential action needed..”

“Our office shall send a missive to both the Chinese and Japanese governments, informing them that interference with Indian trade will be seen as a provocative action, but that we will refrain from selling or shipping weapons and munitions to both sides.” Empress Amara said.

With the two major issues settled for now, the meeting moved on to other matters, including weapons and equipment procurement, chiefly for an expansion of the navy. The plan was to increase the number of destroyers in the navy by at least twenty in the next five years, with the bulk of them being produced in India itself. Normally the entire order could be handled by India, but several of their larger dock-yards were undergoing extensive refit with much more modern and also larger facilities, with the ultimate goal of laying down capital-ship sized hulls before the end of the decade, including plans for two indigenous designed and built super-carriers. To make up for the short-fall, the Imperial Government was planning on commissioning the construction of several modified Udaloy-class destroyers from Russia, as well as other heavy equipment.

The current hostilities between your nations are tragic and concerning for all of Asia. With the collapse of the United States of America and the economic impact that will likely have upon much of the world, India must look to the protection of its shipping and commerce in all areas, but especially now in the South China Sea. While we hope to see a swift and peaceful resolution to your conflict, India must and will protect its commerce. Any action to cease Indian shipping in and around the South China Sea, even if traveling to one of the combatant nations, will be taken as a hostile action against the Imperial Confederation, and the Imperial Indian Navy stands ready to respond in kind.

Understandably your nations would desire that weapons and munitions to lengthen the conflict and cause more death and destruction then needed not be sold, thus we shall cease all sale and transport of weapons and munitions to both nations for the duration of this war.

A Second American Civil War?

The unthinkable has happened in the United States of America. The Union has fragmented fully. Giving rise to three splinter nations and further unrivaling, day by day, of Federal institutions being absorbed by these new governments. Already the United Stations Army and Marine Corps is splintering along State and local lines. Desertions among Federal forces averaged in the dozens per day as skirmishes and small scale fighting between Federal and newly proclaimed Texan Republic forces in Oklahoma and Texas itself continued.

Meanwhile the United States Navy suffered a split when dockyards in Florida were seized and in many cases ships with primarily Southern crews, Southerners making up the largest share of Armed Service personnel, declaring loyalty to the new nation they found themselves within. Within forty eight hours the Stars and Stripes descended from flag poles as new flags, often State flags, were raised. While Federal authorities found themselves either arrested by State authorities, local militia groups forming, or fled to still United States occupied territory.

But all of this belied the growing violence and chaos occurring from coast to coast. In many rural areas law and order broke down completely. In California vicious gangs like MS-13 pillaged Hollywood. Killing, raping, and stealing in a violent rampage along with dozens of other street gangs. Often ending in confused gun battles with their criminal rivals that left dozens dead and wounded. The actual deaths by crime, even as databases broke down like their government agencies, spiked considerably in almost every major American metropolitan area. Detroit, was the worst, with over five hundred people gunned down in an orgy of heinous violence by now unchecked and effectively non-governed landscapes of urban sprawl. Among wiser Governors, or perhaps more heavy handed ones, order would be enforced at the end of a gun barrel. National Guard and State sanctioned militia's were empowered to enforce ordinances and if need be impose Martial Law. But this too led to some consequences.

In Portland, Oregon, self-proclaimed Antifa Brigades rounded up and shot thirty-seven people deemed to be 'Fascists'. Including, to the horror of many at home, children. In Minneapolis the Black Panther's orchestrated what some might call an act of ethnic cleansing by expelling and murdering those of European descent or deemed 'White' on June 28th. Forcing mass flight of tens of thousand of people into rural counties. In Alabama the Southern Cross Militia liquidated Birmingham neighborhoods of their Black occupants on June 29th in retaliation. Forcing the Governor of Alabama to deploy National Guard troops to dissolve the Militia and arrest several of its leadership.

All of this, to the backdrop of the United States Stock Market crashing from June 22nd to June 30th in what became known as the 'Six Day's Ruin'. Dropping ten thousand points in a single week before officially going off the rails with several major American companies almost totally devaluing. The United States Dollar, already suffering inflation and now receiving individual sanctions by a few nations, officially crashed and hyperinflated 3550% by noon on July 1st. The price of a loaf of Bread in New York City rising to $337.99.

July 1st, a day that would be in infamy. Was the beginning of the starvation and food riots among many American families now found wholly destitute. The Nation was ripping itself apart, and the economy from Bangor to Baltimore; Los Angeles to Boise; Denver to Miami; Had effectively ceased to be a modern post-industrial market system.

Given the state of the North American continent the United Nations has been frozen by the abandonment of its New York City Headquarters. Opting to relocate to Amsterdam in the Netherlands in the interim until a new permanent location could be found. Assembly operations are slated to begin once more by July 15th.

Indecision in the OAS

The call for action by Argentina was largely muddled by an unwillingness or apprehension to get involved directly, by many, American nations. Mexico flat out rejected involvement, their government running less than half of their sovereign territory as is, while numerous central American nations cited a lack of ability on their end to realistically enforce even sanctions. Only several Caribbean countries like Jamaica and the Dominican openly sided with Argentina. While Chile merely approved of sanctions and little actual boots on the ground involvement. While the Chinese Soviet Republic cannot support the idea that your nation has never contributed towards the wellbeing of this planet, your empire has also created and influenced the vast majority of the major threats in the first place.

The destabilization of the Middle East due to the Sykes-Picot Agreement because Britain and France are never satisfied with their current borders. The same goes for Africa. The Opium crisis in China, the Bengal Famine in India, and the mass genocide of countless indigenous people in the past were from your initiative or negligence. You abandoned the Czechs. You de-industrialized India into a state of primitiveness. You scattered the African natives among arbitrary borders, created artificial states without the consent of the Arabs, and botched the partitioning of India and Pakistan, nearly causing religious genocide between the Hindus and Muslims.

Many of Africa’s, Middle East’s, and Asia’s problems are caused, both directly and indirectly, by the British Empire. In China’s thoughts, that would have been fine. The people of Britain are very capable of acting conscientiously and almost do attempt to fix these problems, and in the end, China is eternally grateful for the assistance France and the United Kingdom gave during World War II. You gave the KMT guns, equipment, weapons, and supplies through the Burma Road to resist the Japanese invasion. Your actions there have ensured the heirs of China will grow up in a country free of foreign rule.

But listen closely, the future heirs of the British Empire. You cannot pursue the path of decolonization in one continent and pursue colonization in the other. China isn’t pushing for the return of Hong Kong and Macau because we are trying to humiliate your nation nor is China insecure of its national prestige, we are doing it because by keeping Hong Kong (and Macau) it makes your nation completely hypocritical in the eyes of the international community. We are trying to get the United Kingdom to adopt a level of consistency in its agenda in order to prevent its government from being seen as a den of lying, forked tongue snakes led by a two-faced opportunistic pig. China has provided the port cities with their supply of water, 80% of Hong Kong’s water supply comes from China itself, 80% of the water that is no longer being delivered as of right now.

Everyone knows that the Treaty of Nanking is dead; we voted on it. The decolonization clause is applicable and by sending a war fleet to Hong Kong only brings the message of Gunboat Diplomacy. You can deny the legitimacy of the vote all you want but that is how it works here in the UN Assembly. By sending that war fleet, you are revealing to the world that you are still clinging to the idea that the British Empire can still endure in East Asia despite crumbling in Africa and South Asia.

The Chinese Soviet Republic knows that the United Kingdom would try to paint Hong Kong as a core part of British territory as a way to continue British Rule there and we can tell you, that is not how it works here. Hong Kong is 9,562 km away from London while Macau is 10,875 km away from Lisbon. The amount of money you spend garrisoning, fortifying, and reinforcing your rule in the port cities could’ve been spent at home, invested in state welfare or infrastructure projects. And going back to the Gunboat Diplomacy you have pulled off in order to try to intimidate the Chinese Soviet Republic when it is currently battling Japan, that was an awful decision that could lead your nation to enter a future of misery and alienation, especially when your former dominions and friends in the UN has called for de-escalation. Clinging to outdated ideals and ambition to preserving the British Empire will color every diplomatic interaction you ever have and make it impossible to have genuine friendships or alliances. It is especially true when it comes to the nations that declared independence from the British Empire.

China is certainly not assuming that the UK will never have one, but they won’t be long-lasting and never bring any amount of genuine security to your people. Most certainly, the United Kingdom can count on its former dominions such as Canada, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand due to cultural and historical ties but they are fully independent and can only endure so much of Britain’s nonsensical endeavors. Maybe King William V will abandon diplomacy altogether and proclaim that the only allies Britain needs are “the Army and Navy”, all while wallowing in envy whenever he sees nations like Egypt or Canada be part of something greater, something good, among their neighbors.

The United Kingdom would dispute this speech for exaggeration, but might I add, look at how you already treat your member states. Scotland and Wales, separatism aside, are integral pieces that make up the country and they have excelled beyond expectations in serving the Royal Crown since the kingdoms were united. Can the people of England, much less the politicians of London, view them in a similar light? As anything other than the only two kingdoms that are willing to endure and carry out Britain’s excessive ego? What has the monarchy done for them?

And Ireland! Poor Ireland! Forcefully integrated and converted at sword point in the Middle Ages, only to never escape the barbarian stigma London has labeled them. 800 years of colonization, exploitation and incompetent rule has left them extremely bitter of British Rule. Do you still remember the 1848 Irish Famine that the British Empire mismanaged? If not, remember the Troubles between Ireland and North Ireland? What constitutional monarchy sends death squads to purge the opposition?

Investing doesn’t count, Mr. Chairman. Even if the tycoons of London, the Parliament, or the monarchy build infrastructure or expand healthcare outside of England, the end result is the same: self-gratification. Every new hospital in Wales or school in Scotland is only created with the expectation of further praise for the Prime Minister and his monarch. They are not citizens, they are worshippers!

And Britain’s former territories? Good God, the way the British Empire has treated them. Do you think Nanjing cares about its people the same way London cares about India and Africa? In your dreams. Every day under the rule of the British yoke was the Indian and African continent ruthlessly exploited of its resources, stripped of its ancient wealth, and its people forced to live in arbitrary castes and social restrictions while the British people lived in wealth and luxury. The inhabitants of the Indian subcontinent had to watch over a century of British rule slowly stripping the lands off all its industrial advancements so it could be centralized in London. They were forced into an agrarian society and it took them many painful decades to regain what they have lost since achieving independence. India has watched you destroy whatever religious tolerance they had between the six major religions on the subcontinent by segregating them into religious castes and having them vote for their representatives based on their beliefs and you go on to pronounce to the world that you have introduced religious freedom from your patronage.

Do British schools teach that the man that partitioned the Indian subcontinent did not even visit the regions where he was drawing the borders? Even honor the Indian soldiers that fought for the Empire during World War I and II, when the Raj had the largest volunteer army in the world? Mr. Chairman, you have no idea what the Chinese Soviet Republic would give up in order to have such a dependable ally.

What about your former colonies in Africa? Why not build something out of your factories and dockyards that would make their transition into independent nations easier, instead of warring against the United States and antagonizing the CSR?

The nations that voted yes to China’s proposal to apply Resolution 1514 over Hong Kong and Macau know the answer. The African states would thank you for it, they would be glad to have a version of the UK that is trying to make right of old wrongs but they would not call the British Empire the best thing that has ever happened to Great Britain for it like North Ireland. And in the mind of the British monarchy, whoever doesn’t do that might as well not exist.

Ignore China’s message if the king so desires. Keep going on this path of hypocrisy and selfishness, and the CSR will see you in 30 years, under financial strain for having the world’s largest fleet with 16 aircraft carriers as if it could substitute for the lost honor and respect among its international peers. The politicians in London have always mocked Xi Jinping for enabling an“Orwellian” state but the General Secretary has a country and a people that are willing to tolerate him and follow his leadership through the Third Sino-Japanese War. We are fighting for a free and united China, just as Sun Yat-sen has envisioned. At the rate the United Kingdom is going, We will be surprised if Scotland chose to remain in the union of crowns.

The rest of the world, Mr. Chairman (The Rep. of the UK), will never accomplish what the British Empire has accomplished. Many won’t have a space program, won’t claim many technological and social advancements, or reach the status of great power. But they will be free to pursue their own destiny, their own place on this planet, and they will call it their national pride. Despite everything the British Empire has accomplished, it will only be remembered as an empire that wouldn’t die. Who couldn’t, perhaps.

Get out of East Asia, both of you (UK and Portugal). Return Hong Kong and Macau and stay out.

July 17th will decide the final fate over the port cities if you wish to delay the inevitable.

The 2nd wave of Japan's missiles has struck against China before its missile defenses have a chance to load. About 50% have breached the zones and inflicted heavier losses than the initial attack. Possibly 1000 more deaths have been added to the toll, and yet China remains uninterrupted in its mobilization process. Armored and mechanized divisions are being sent over the RRC border and Tsingtao while Soviet Naval infantry divisions were transported to Hainan. The lines are continuing to be drawn all across the border.

SINGAPORE - President Naomi Yassin has made an official statement in regards to the recent situation that has now escalated in the United States of America (USA) to the point that a civil war has possibly started. She expresses full rage at President Maeve Dolonescu and the rest of the US government for allowing such thing to happen. She also expresses absolute disgust at the recent atrocities that began spreading across the US. She condemns those that were committed by Antifa Brigades, Black Panthers, white supremacists and street gangs. She also condemns both Commandant Earl Pendergast and the New Cascadian Army to enabling a recent massacre by Antifa in Portland, Oregon. Mrs. President has made it clear that more sanctions shall be placed on the US government, while there is a possibility to de-escalate the situation through the use of peacekeeping forces and humanitarian aid, despite potential issues that the situation has created in the process. In the meanwhile, Mrs. President have yet to make a statement on the war that recently broke out between China and Japan.

Nusantara Divests from the US

NUSANTARA - In response to the recent economic crash in the US, many Nusantaran investors have quickly started to divest from many US companies. They cited the recent economic crisis as a major reason for divestment, despite the fact that the Nusantaran government had recently ordered investors to divest from US companies back when sanctions were eventually placed on the US. The investors have planned to invest in local projects across Nusantara and other Southeast Asian countries, as well as potentially invest in Russia, India and Greece. It looks like economic prosperity is about to bless Nusantara and its neighbours.

Regional Cooperation Has Begun

SOUTHEAST ASIA - A new alliance has been formed in Southeast Asia. It is known as the "Association of Southeast Asian Nations" or ASEAN for short. It currently consists of Nusantara, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand (Siam), Myanmar (Burma) and the Philippines. Nusantara, being the chief architect of this alliance, would have a dominant role within it and serve as the so-called "Guardian of Southeast Asia". ASEAN will use Singapore, the capital of Nusantara, as its HQ. Many considers this to be a big step for the whole region and that it would likely improve the existing conditions of each member-state.

China and Japan Goes to War

EAST ASIA - A war has recently broke out between the Chinese Soviet Republic (CSR) and the Empire of Japan. It began when drone attacks targeted both countries out of nowhere and then accusations started to fly around. Recently, the Imperial Japanese Navy is currently making moves on China, while the Chinese government began implementing the so-called "war communism" as a way to step things up. As of now, the Nusantaran government is expressing full concern in regards to the conflict and wishes for both sides to settle down before things gets worse.

Regarding the US, the Nusantaran government fiercely condemns President Maeve Dolonescu and the entire US government for furter escalating the recent situation in the US to the point that a civil war may have begun. The Nusantaran government urges the US government for the last time to de-escalate the situation and restore order in the US. If not, then more sanctions shall be placed on the US.

Regarding China and Japan, the Nusantaran government urges both countries to put their weapons down and restore peace without further casualties. Their war will not benefit Asia and may only cause further damage on an international scale. A Response to sanctions

President Dolonescu fired back on the notion of Sanctions led by the President of Nusantaran. Referring to them as nothing but a 'mild inconvenience' and announcing a total bar of shipping and travel too and from the nation as a form of recompense.

Diplomatic Officials Detained

With the announcement of sanctions and contempt around the world, diplomatic officials have been detained without trial under the Patriot act. Namely all ambassadors and officials from United Kingdom and Nusantaran embassies. President Dolonescu gave no speech or public statement about the arrests, as little is reported about them. Having been carried out by CIA operatives in the dead of night. As well as no formal arrest or detainment records being kept. All political detainees are held in CIA blacksites across the remaining loyal aspects of the nation.

The Soviet side, bent on disrupting peace in the Orient, has sought to instigate conflict after conflict, first with its attack on Taiwan, now with its threats to attack Hong Kong. The Empire will forever stand against the Soviet desire to dominate the Orient, and will bring about a swift victory against the grasps of communism.

The past days had seen a relative lull in the fighting. Every hour since 7 PM on June 13th, around two Type 5 Yasukini Medium Range Ballistic Missiles had and would be fired from silos in Taiwan. These were older than the Type 15 ballistic missiles, and were in many ways similar to the Scud. Since these attacks were only meant to keep the enemy on their toes, these were prefect for the job. It was likely they would be shot down anyways, so this way the more modern missiles would not be wasted. Targets ranged from military docks or regional airbases, but for now, the series of strikes were limited.

From Nanyo, forces were being sent to aid the Empire as well. Under the expectation that Nanyo would not come under attack any time soon, orders had been relayed for all surplus weaponry, ammunition, vehicles, and aircraft be returned to Japan. In addition, 200 soldiers from the Nanyo Imperial Army had been slated to fly to Japan, to reinforce defenses in Taiwan.

Across Japan, the RRC and Nanyo, orders had gone out for police departments to turn over surplus amounts of 5.56×45mm NATO ammunition, used by their Special Security Teams in their Type 84 rifles. While production orders went out to Japanese arms manufacturers, it was critical to High Command that all existing supplies be readily accessible to the military.

In Kyushu, the new and secret South China Expeditionary Army, composed of the 4th Division, 7th Armored Division, 1st Artillery Brigade, 3rd Kenpeitai Brigade, and 1st Raiding Brigade had begun packing up equipment and readying for deployment. All 3 Osumi Class Amphibious Assault Ships, 2 LCU-2001-class utility landing craft, and 7 YL-09-class landing craft had been pulled together for the transport operation. From the ROCN, 3 former Miura-class tank landing ships and 3 Atsumi-class tank landing ships had been called upon to transport the units.

Each Osumi Class Amphibious Landing Ship would carry 10 MBTs and 330 troops. The LCU craft would carry 200 troops each, while the LCMs would only carry 100 each for this longer distance transport operation. The Miura class would each carry 10 MBTs while the Atsumi class ships would carry 130 troops. Carrying a total of 2,480 soldiers and 60 MBTs, it would clearly not be enough to transport all the units at once. Thus, several civilian ships would have to be requisitioned.

It would be a few days before everything could be prepared, so quick work was made to requisition the necessary ships. Among them was the SSTH Ocean Arrow, the Auriga Leader, the Suisen, the Suzuran, the Pacific Venus, the MS Asuka II, and the Heroic Ace. Car carriers and cruise liners now pressed into service as transports, these former civilian ships would be more than enough the job.

In the first trip, only the 7th Armored Division, 1st Artillery Brigade, and 3rd Kenpeitai Brigade would be deployed. Escorted by the entirety of the Kido Buntai, composed of the 1st and 2nd fleets, it was a massive force to be reckoned with.

With estimates of a three day trip by sailing around Taiwan, the group set off to begin the new operation.

The communication from South West Africa had been enough to interest the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of the Army despite its inconvenient timing. While some in the Navy stood opposed, the Army saw it as a good opportunity for the future.

Yamaguchi shook his head after reading the request. "We are at war! If this was in peacetime, I would consider, but we have our upcoming operations to plan for."

Yamazaki chuckled. "All of the equipment will be coming from the Army, and they never specified it had to be brand new. They also never said we had to send it all at once. I think we can easily fulfill some parts of the deal and the future returns make it worthwhile. We will truly be a world power..." He paused, opening his briefcase to reveal documents from the Ministry of Finance. "Anyone with access to the news knows the American dollar is collapsing. My men over at the Ministry of Finance have begun divesting into gold and the ruble, but we also want to be careful not to upset the Americans. While I believe they are on a slow track to full victory, I think they will eventually triumph. This is a chance to divest. They are willing to send us 10% of their diamond production, which is fairly significant. I am told Namibia usually has an output of 2 million carats of diamonds per year. 10% of that is 200,000 carats of diamonds. One carat is, in normal times at least, $1,910 - $15,650. So between $380 million and $3.1 billion per year for this deal. It is not terrible."

Prime Minister Tojo was divided on the issue but finally said, "If the Army believes it can still go through with the deal and still be able to supply our troops I will not oppose it. We already have plans in the works to begin large scale production of our Type 20 rifles. Since our newest recruits won't be battle ready for a few months, I don't see any significant harm."

Yuasa nodded. "The 110mm LAMs and Howa 84RRs are not a problem. They would be fairly obsolete in our current conflict and can be taken out of our stockpiles. They aren't asking for many of the 84RRs anyways. We have been breaking relations with a few countries recently over the conflict, we don't need to take too many of our training personnel out of their duties. We can send several of the military attaches from Manchuria, China, Nusantara, and Australia, as well as some of the trainers in Nanyo. The police trainers aren't much of an issue, nor is the money, it is really just the guns. We can gather some Type 89s together from the Imperial Coast Guard's surplus, some from the 1st Raiding Brigade, and some from the Imperial Navy's and our own surpluses. The Type 20s are more of an issue. We only produced 3,283 of them last year for the 1st Raiding Brigade. We can send a few examples over for the time being, but it will take time before we can completely fulfill the order."

Emperor Nguyễn Minh Huy appeared in the hallway, behind the Council of State. His Imperial Chancellor ushered him in with a low bow, whilst the ministers bowed their heads and made way for the Emperor. He returned the bow, sat down on the throne, and nodded in acknowledgement to his ministers.

He was in his usual meetings. Every week, the agenda had to be reviewed, the laws had to be signed, and current affairs had to be addressed. Nguyễn expected for this week to talk about-

“The situation in Japan.” his Prime Minister said, standing in the centre of the room. “As the esteemed ministers are aware, we have been pressured- by the people and by politicians- to pick a side. A side that will decide the rest of our foreign policy- I can even say the future of this nation.”

“I agree.” Nguyễn replied. “I was informed last week that you had found a response?”

This time, it was an officer, Phương, that replied. He wore the light blue and short-sleeved uniform of the Air Force.

“Yes, your Imperial Highness.” he said, taking out some maps and placing them on the board. “We have a plan that, with your permission, will be released in the name of the Imperial Household.”

“Go on.”

“It is to proceed in two phases.” Phương pointed at the charts, which showed East Asia. “Firstly, a press release, announcing our support for Britain, Hong Kong, and Japan.”

He paused for the emperor to take this in. He nodded and waited for his officer to continue.

“We shall, at the same time, offer Hong Kong surplus equipment. As it happens, we can spare 1,000 small arms, 20 vehicles and 2 ships. If- and we expect this to be an if- this escalates into a bigger war, we can mobilise 50,000 soldiers to the north.

“The second phase is to send the Fleet of the North for… what they call ‘gunboat diplomacy’. Simply put, once China provokes us, 18 ships shall appear near Hong Kong, and-”

The Emperor asked whether this was overreacting to internal affairs of other countries. The Prime Minister interjected to respond.

“I quite understand your anxiety, your Imperial Highness. I can assure you that we can both justify our attacks and win the conflict. For a start, I am increasing our military budget by 35%. In a few months- maybe weeks- we can start a war.”

“Yes, but I mean the reason for war.” Nguyễn said. “Do we have one?”

This time, his Prime Minister hesitated. “Well, I mean, we are helping an ally-”

“If you mean Japan, you know very well my goal is to cut them off from our region. No, no, we can help Britain, but not Japan.”

With a dismissive wave, the Emperor left the room, leaving the Council to discuss other political matters.

Day 01

0400-0430

Ukrainian Missile defense systems in the east and north come online in an attempt to intercept Russian missiles detected over Ukraine already. Many of the Systems attempts to come online are futile however and nearly 65% of all enemy missiles being confirmed hits. Explosions are reported in Kharkivs industrial areas and several fires are started. The Garrison in Kharkiv is ordered to begin mobilization but with many National Guardsmen out of the city or otherwise missing it is expected for the mobilization to take several days. Further east at the Donbas an estimated 38 missiles get through and cause substantial damage to military and civilian infrastructure in the area.

In the South further launches are detected from the Russian Navy out at sea. Both at the fleeing Ukrainian Task force and at the Ukrainian mainland. All eight Kalibr missiles are intercepted by interdiction missiles from the Task force or are shot out of the sky by the substantial CIWS fire the Task force has to offer. With more warning for these sea based launches, Ukrainian defenses are able to account for approximately 55% of the Sea Based missile systems. Damage to Government facilities such as airports, depots, and military bases are quickly reported and range from minor to excessive.

All 35 missiles fired from the Russian TU-95s strike their targets along the Donbas and further significant damage to both Ukrainian Personnel and Infrastructure. Civilian casualties have also been reported but no official figure has been given as of now.

0430-0500

With much of the Ukrainian Missile Defense systems, AAA, and other SAM sites having activated in an attempt to intercept russian missiles, SEAD operations by the Russian Airforce are devastating. The 1039th Anti-Air Regiments initial casualty report indicates that nearly 20% of all systems were hit in the first wave while reloading and with active radar. Every Brigades Anti-Aircraft battalion have reported casualties and of shootdowns of Russian Aircraft but no official figure has been provided as of now.

In the North-West the 16th Army Aviation Brigade rushes north in their Helicopter Transports. Escorted by a flight of 3 SU-27s the 16th Army ABs mission is to land and secure the bridges of Kovel so that the 2nd and 3rd Battalions of the 14th Mechanized Brigade can cross the Turiya river and began defensive operations from the Northwestern side of Kovel. The 16ths Attack Helicopter Squadron of 16 MI-24 attack helicopters are to swing from east to west, targeting Russian vehicles and targets of opportunity before swinging south and Returning to Base. The 44th Artillery Brigade Meanwhile will make its way to Lutsk in preparation of supporting a potential defense of the City.

Further east the 95th Air Assault Brigade out of Zhytomyr have moved north and begun operations to secure Korosten from Russian Forces. They are to be supported by the 30th Mechanized and 26th Artillery. A flight of 4 Mig-29s armed for air support escorted by a flight of 4 Su-27s will give support to the Operation to Secure Korosten. The 95th and 30th come under sustained artillery bombardment, they return fire with their own artillery elements but casualties are reported.

The 79th Mechanized and 1129th Anti-Air redeploy to Kyiv.

0600-0700

With the assault of the 1st shock army confirmed the 53rd, 54st, and 101st Mechanized Brigades are ordered to bunker down and to cause as much damage as possible to enemy formations. Ambushes are prepared, tank positions are hastily prepared, and the entrances to the towns barricaded. From inside the towns rocket artillery and howitzers spew fire at the Russian units which will soon surround them on all sides.

The 59th Artillery Brigade and 1039th Anti-Air Regiment are forced to abandon large portions of their heavy equipment as they are ordered to retreat west. They are covered by the T-84s and T-80s of the 17th Tank Brigade who comes into heavy contact with portions of the 8th Guards Motorized and 3/5th Guards Tank Brigade before pulling back west under a smoke screen set by the Brigades supporting SPA.

0700-0800

The 810ths landing comes as a surprise to the defenders of Mariupol. The landing is mostly unopposed however fierce fighting soon erupts as the Azov and Donbas volunteer battalions attempt to push the invading Russians back into the Sea. The two National Guard battalions are soon joined by the nearby 93rd Mechanized Brigade. The 1st Battalion which is supported by the 93rds armored Battalion join in the fighting to push the Russians back while the rest of the Brigade sets up defenses for the remainder of the town. Knowing of the situation Kiev sends the 56th Motorized Brigade to aid the defense and the break out of the city if necessary, they are supported by the MI-24s of the 11th Army Aviation Brigade.

The 11th themselves take up defensive positions in Kherson while the 79th AAB take up positions east of them in Nona Kakhovka. To their east the 98th Mechanized

South of Kharkiv the 92nd Mechanized and 81st Airmobile Brigades are ordered North to investigate Kharkiv who has reported Russian convoys entering the City. If true the two brigades are to retreat west while garrisoning the city if not true. Further south of them the 23rd Tank Brigade is ordered to Retreat west.

North of Kharkiv the 58th Motorized Brigade and 27th Rocket Artillery Brigade are ordered to Retreat west.

In Chernihiv the 61st Jager Brigade moves south, attempting to punch through Russian Lines and link up with the 1st Tank Brigade who are doing the same from the south. They then will retreat under artillery fire and move south Towards Kiev.

In the rest of Ukraine the 128th Mountain Infantry, 10th Mountain Assault Infantry, 15th Rocket Artillery, 24th Mechanized, 19th Missile, and 38th Artillery will all begin to redeploy northwards to begin preperations for a counteroffensive meant to push the 6th Army out of Ukraine. Elsewhere the 43rd Heavy Artillery Brigade are ordered to Kiev. The 46th Air Assault Brigade is ordered to redeploy to both Kremenchuk and Cherkasy along the Dniper river. The 18th Army Aviation Brigade is ordered to redeploy to Kaniv.

At exactly 10:45 AM 4 Ukrainian SU-24s, escorted by 3 Mig-29s who are loaded out for air to air combat, approach the skies above the Ukrainian city of Melitopol. Each is carrying to Neptune cruise missiles which have a range of 280km. The SU-24s drop their payloads and the missiles soar away, streaking to skim near the surface of the earth to avoid radar detection. 4 of the Neptunes are targeted for the Crimean side of the Crimean Bridge while another 4 angle off to the east a bit with the intention of striking the Russian side of the same bridge.

At about the same to the west from the Ukrainian city of Odessa a further 32 Neptune cruise missiles are launched, their targets being the Russian fleet that is off the coast and which had intercepted their first salvo of missiles.

The NDM Brigades are to be given as much training as possible prior to the arrival of Russian Forces. Upon the Arrival of Russia forces they are to defend the city with their lives.

These secondary orders are to raise only a single brigade of NDM members. This would bring the paper strength of the NDM to 410,000 Members when the Mobilisation is complete.

At the Same the the Mobilization of First Wave Reservists into 2 Armored divisions and a Mechanized division using older equipment has begun and is expected to end within a weeks of the wars beggining.

The large wooden table in one of the numerous galleries of the Kremlin was decked with maps, images both satellite and from aircraft, and strewn with report paperwork. General Shoygu, Defense Minister of the Russian Empire, read from his own notes as aides made markings on a centered map of Ukraine.

"Aerial Campaign Anti-AA operations have so far been a success. One Su-24 was shot down with its pilot ejecting. The Pilot was recovered by the 1/4th BCG twenty minutes after beginning their drive. Damage to two other craft, another Su-24, and an Su-25 have been reported and grounded for repairs."

Putin interjected while looking at the maps, "The Ukrainians will be aware of the jammers and try to compensate for that."

Soygu nodded and Major General of the Aerospace Kliment Berendyenny spoke up, "The full Aerial Campaign will be underway by 1600 hours today. All SEAD tasked craft will be equipped with Kh-31 Anti-Radiation Missiles. They will be launched at range with the missiles homing in on Ukrainian radar stations, command and control systems using radar, and AA systems mounting radar searching capabilities. We expect expenditures of ninety such missiles within the next twenty-four hours and have put in orders for two hundred additional Kh-31s equipped for long distance homing. In preparation of more missions."

"Of course. Continue Sergei."

Shoygu continued, "6th Army advanced into Ukraine and has encountered a staunch Ukrainian defense in the dawn light hours on their final approach to Kovel. The North-western side of the city and along the river the Ukrainians have deployed at least Brigade strength. 103rd Mobile Brigade made contact at approximately 0547 in the morning by the 103rd's reconnaissance company. The initial engagement lasted eleven minutes with the recon company withdrawing North-West. Three casualties and one APC knocked out by Ukrainian support weapons. Observers are at Cherkasy and Moschchena ready to direct air and artillery strikes. Colonel Markim Purveyavich has drawn the 103rd up just further West to prepare to advance on the city. He is requesting permission to begin shelling the town for an evening assault. His tanks are in position to the West of the town to support an infantry assault. From their vantage point in the Kyinka district to the West of the Desna, South-East of Chernihiv proper, paratroopers of the 2nd Company, 1st Battalion, 38th Guards Regiment of the 38th VDV watched the mechanized brigade to their south exchanging fire with the incoming Ukrainian tanks. These were Ukrainian regulars, and as such moved in solid discipline and cohesion. But with Russian advantages in airpower the approach of the 1st Tank Brigade was known before contact was even made. Allowing the 120th Guards Mechanized to deploy from their vehicles with their RPG-29 Vampir and RPG-16s in support of their units 96 tanks. Russian T-80s and T-72s firing at Ukrainian counterparts as soon as they came into range with either a barrel launched missile or a barrage of shells. It wasn't long after the Brigades Rapira 100mm AT guns, pre-sited to aim South, opened up on their own accord.

On the left flank of the 120th two battalions of mechanized infantry had deployed with IFV and APC support to harry the South-ward driving 61st Jagers.

The 144th and 183rd have received orders to surround them until our own National Guard follow on troops can begin squeezing these encircled units slowly. The 180th MRD is moving South-West to link up with 1st Shock Army forces advancing on Slovyansk."

"Finally, Mariupol."

"The 810th landed at Mariupol and is now heavily engaged, initially by the Azov and Donbas Battalions, and now aided by Ukrainian Armor at battalion strength and at least two battalions, but as much as a full brigade, of mechanized infantry. The Black Sea Fleet is mobilizing its aircraft and has begun naval bombardments of shells and missiles in support of the 810ths defense in the sea side districts of the city. Additionally, twelve Su-27s, and eight MiG-29s have been scrambled from nearby airfields at Rostov to assist in throwing back the Ukrainian counter assault."

115th Motor Rifle Division

Two battalions of the 50th Separate "Poltavskaya" Artillery Regiment had been engaged in a long distance fight with the Ukrainian 26th Artillery for several hours at this point. Though, while the Ukrainians were targeting fast moving motor rifle divisions own formations the Russian artillery batteries had been targeting the Ukrainian artillery exclusively in counter-battery fire. Orders had come in around 1400 Hours from Stavka that the 115th would commence a general assault of Ukrainian defenses for Korosten. The first action would be on the 115th MRD's right flank as a regiment sized force fanned out from Luhyny and after deploying and firing four 120mm mortars at 1708 Hours which began to shell the Ukrainian 30th Mechanized positions to the South of the E373 highway the Russian Infantry went into action. Supported by their BTRs and BMPs. The Russian infantry would use their squad and platoon support machine guns to try and suppress Ukrainian defenses while also deploying their RPG-7s and 26s in the anti-personnel anti-strongpoint role. To try and dislodge Ukrainian infantry from buildings or behind field defenses. While dedicated tank hunters formed in each company would be equipped with RPG-29 Vampirs or RPG-30 single shot systems for engaging ERA defended tanks.

Moving in a far right hook two platoons of T-72B3's would move to the South-West before turning directly East to engage Ukrainian defenses with fire from two directions. The aim of forcing Ukrainian defenders from Hlukhova and Stantsiine.

The second engagement would be by two battalions of the 115th MRD. One moving to Dibrova and the other moving through the forested areas directly north of Korosten suburbs of Kozhukhivka and Klocheve. They would set up mortars and prepare to shell the suburbs for their advance into the area. While the remaining regiment of the MRD would deploy two battalions heading South to take up positions on the left flank at Sokoryky and Bekhy. Allowing a view of the Uzh River and therefore Ukrainian movements coming and going from the direction of Kiev.

For the staff of the Second Southern Military District, it was chaos.

Hours ago, a message from Huế had ordered them to start 'general mobilization of all forces'. That numbered at around 30,000 soldiers. Mobilization, according to the Emperor, meant moving them north without delay. Simple checking had found that Đà Nẵng, a coastal port in central Vietnam, had also been ordered to deploy half its garrison to the border. So had Hà Nội. Altogether, it seemed that 200,000 troops were moving so quickly that traffic jams of miles and miles were forming.

"What have we got so far?" the District Commander called from his office.

In the next room, his deputy replied that only 5,000 soldiers had managed to move off. He added that coordination was so bad that they were scared of friendly fire incidents before they had reached the northern border.

"Can somebody tell me why we are heading north?" the commander demanded, storming into the control room, where half a dozen senior officers plotted movements on a map.

A communications officer turned around on his seat, and explained that the Emperor had declared war on China six hours ago.

The commander was momentarily stunned. "What?!" he exclaimed.

He was shown the Imperial Decree, addressed to all Military Districts, calling them up for service. And another one, sent to the world, calling them to join the fight against China.

He shook his head, and sat on the table.

Now, he thought, the future of Vietnam rests on us.

Admiral Khánh, commander of the Fleet of the North, saluted. In front of him was the Emperor, in his gold and silver uniform, surrounded by Imperial officers with high-ranking and somewhat meaningless titles.

"Admiral." the Emperor said, returning the salute. "I trust you have carried out my orders?"

"To the letter, Your Imperial Highness." the Vietnam War veteran replied. "I can deploy the fleet in half an hour, should you wish."

The Emperor nodded. Khánh hurried onto the flagship- the destroyer IVN Hoàng- and gave orders for the crew to prepare to leave port. They all knew the plan. Split into three squadrons, one of them would sail into Hong Kong, with a convoy carrying food and water supplies. Another would assist the Japanese in a blockade of Chinese ports, concentrating in the southeast areas. The last squadron was to act as a reserve in port. All of this was not what the Emperor had stated, but he held such a great respect for his experienced admiral that the fleet was to follow the admiral's orders over the Emperor, should he see it necessary.

The ships were equipped with depth charges, anti-air and anti-ship guns, as well as a contingent of marines and Coast Guard personnel. Khánh had two submarines to command, with the third one being prepared to join them in two weeks.

And then it was time. The Emperor saluted, as the imperial guards in their white uniforms fired a gun salute, and the ships started to sail out. The Vietnamese flag was raised on all the ships, as crowds gathered to watch their brave sailors set out to defend the homeland.

40,000 soldiers were gathered here, for one of the greatest events in Vietnamese military history.

They had been marching from across the country, each commander only knowing the route of his own men, so that it was common to be stuck on a road for hours as soldiers passed them. This was not the full force. 30,000 more troops, with the majority of the heavy guns, were still on their way- a few more days before they arrived. But it was no time to waste.

The troops marched through the city rapidly, with the yellow and red banner of the country fluttering with every regiment, and more flags being waved by the citizens. Overhead, aircraft could be seen speeding through the sky. They were to launch a bombing campaign on the borderlands, before the infantry took over. They still had about fifteen miles to march before they reached the border, and they were then to continue 70 miles into China, before stopping. The reinforcements- those 30,000 soldiers- were to arrive at Lai Châu, in the west, and continue for 50 miles. More soldiers were to be expected and secure the gaps in between, so that around 150,000 troops could be expected to invade China. Supported by aircraft and heavy artillery, they could do well.

Twenty minutes later, they arrived at the border. Two border guards, in green uniforms, paid no attention to the soldiers. They had their orders. The troops did not stop at the gate- they continued to march, bringing down the gate and letting them stomp on it, as they entered China.

Largely do to fireworks celebrations making it difficult to pin down the location of the planes in air, as well as the firework explosions hiding the presence of the barrage initially. Eventually they manage to man their anti aircraft weaponry and turn it on the B-1 Lancer. Sarin filled shells slam into the streets, roofs, and windows throughout the city. Several shells land directly into Grant Park, where a large group of people have gathers for the fireworks display and July 4th celebration. Gas slowly fills the streets, causing respiratory paralysis in thousands before emergency responders are even able to begin mobilizing. In time, anti Aircraft weaponry was able to bring the Lancer down, though the F-35s escaped. The lancer falling into the ocean in a blazing trail of ignited gas. The Russian Ambassador and his entourage were quickly searched by the Palace Guards, a thorough checking in with the gate guards they had already been searched by to double check that everything remained the same, and then they were politely ushered into the Palace itself. Like the Grounds, the Palace was expansive, a sprawling compound of the main palace, several gardens, and a dozen outbuildings.

The Russians were led to one of the gardens, beautifully maintained and arranged, with flowers and small shrubs surrounding a long rectangle water feature, a pathway on both sides. At the end of the water feature was a modest sized, open walled pavilion, where the Empress and a few retainers waited, a lunch spread laid out and ready.

The Ambassador and his group were ushered into the pavilion, a gentle breeze keeping away the midday heat. The Empress did not stand, but she nodded in greeting as the Ambassador sat.

“We thank you for your prompt arrival, as always, Ambassador Kudashev, and the gifts.” She said, as the gifts were presented to her. She smiled slightly, sending off a servant to fetch a glass. In their younger years, she and the Tsarina used to get up to all sorts of trouble when they found themselves with one another, usually when their parents were meeting for negotiations, so while vodka was not a massively popular drink in India, the Empress was well antiquated with it.

Some pleasantries would be exchanged, before the Empress gestured to the admiral sitting to her front left.

“As mentioned in our summons, we would like to discuss the possibility of commissioning the procurement of heavy military equipment, chiefly the ordering of several naval ships. As you are no doubt aware, India has been steadily expanding our naval facilities and numbers, and this war between Japan and China is ample reason to move some of our projects forward. The Imperial Navy is looking to commission some destroyers from Russian dockyards, as several of our larger dockyards are undergoing extensive construction projects.” She said, beginning the meeting simply and to the point.

Admiral Rahul Divekar nodded respectfully. “We would like to commission Russian dockyards for at least four modified versions of your Udaloy destroyers. Naturally, if acceptable, we would send a few of our own engineers to work with yours for the alterations for our needs.” He said.

Weapons deals were not the only actions of diplomacy being undertaken of course. For some time the Imperial Confederation had worked on expanding outward, seeking to expand the boundaries of the empire. War and conquest could do this, and indeed there were plans for that to some extent, but India also enjoyed very good relations with some of its immediate neighbors, namely Nepal and Bangladesh, and it was decided that diplomacy was the way forward with friends, thus diplomatic missives were sent to the leaderships of those nations.

"How far have we gotten in training?" the Emperor asked. This was directed at his expert advisor and military Chief of Staff, Phương.

"The Military Academy has quickly adapted to our conscription acts." he replied. "Our House of Councillors approved the funding of a new academy, to be finished in 3 years, yesterday. I may add at it was close. Strong resistance from the pacifists in the group. But, anyway... we have prepared for 100,000 new recruits in 1 year. This, I am told, is far higher than our capacity. The Prime Minister is therefore planning to have the House approve a larger military budget. Da Nang is to become our new naval academy. 100 new instructors are already waiting for at least a thousand recruits. The Air Force shall have Phù Cát as its training base. By splitting the branches into individual training academies, we hope we can maximize capacity."

He sighed. "However, the Air Force have not prepared for such a large surplus of recruits. We have sent for civilian pilots to get trained in combat in the next 3 months. It will take at least 2 months for Phù Cát to be ready. We are hurrying efforts as much as we can. I have also ordered for basic training to be cut short to 9 months. Any further needs to be approved by the House, which we expect to be done by the end of the day. Training will concentrate on combat and drill, and less on military strategy."

He nodded, and handed over back to the Emperor.

"Very well." he muttered. "I expect that the front is progressing?"

"No news yet." Phương replied immediately. "We are planning for the advance to slowly widen out, down to the last battalion, in positions so that each unit is no more than half an hour away- or ten miles- away from another. The rest of the artillery, as the Office of Procurement reported yesterday were on their way, have arrived. We are acquiring civilian ships- from cargo vessels to speedboats- for military use, especially for transport."

The Emperor nodded. "Let us hope that our plans succeed." he declared. "And may our soldiers endure what is ahead of them..."

At that very moment, tens of thousands of soldiers were marching off to defend their homeland, and a vicious debate was happening inside the House.

News reports from around the world spur into a frenzy as reports and video of the attack on the Free City of Atlanta spread across the planet. People are quick to blame all sides in the civil war conflict. Major American news networks like CNN, and MSNBC support President Dolonescu's claims that she and the government of the United States had nothing to do with the attack. Something she condemned totally. Although most smaller networks and independent news sources tend to focus their lens on her as being behind the attack. The Acting Mayor of the Free City of Atlanta, Kayla Jackson, publicly condemns the attacks, during a televised moment of silence over the loss of over one million lives and counting. Including the former Mayor of the city, who was in Grant park when the gas hit. Video of him suffocating while he shielded and brought children to shelter is often played on stations around the clock. Acting Mayor Jackson personally blames both the United States of America, as well as The Constitutional Confederation of States, accusing them both of working together in a blatantly racist attack on a majority black city that declared their own freedom. A short video is released of Commandant Pendergast of Cascadia laughing when hearing the news for the first time. A member of the New Cascadian Army posts the video along with many others of the militia soldiers training on youtube. Being met with divisive responses of both praise and condemnation. The United American States, Governor Hyralez, as well as the Acting President of the Republic of Texas, in an act of unity declare that they will jointly off aid to the Free City of Atlanta. Both making the public demand for President Smith of the CCS to allow emergency personnel safe access through the territory. Something President Smith agrees to immediately. Choosing not to offer aid of his own, out of fear of reprisal against emergency workers of the CCS in the wake of the Acting Mayor's inflammatory comments.

The Secessions continue

California, a state that was at one point the bastion of the Democratic Party, has seen the Sarin attacks and concluded that the system that they have been propagating no longer works. The high population of socialist, communist, and marxist individuals swiftly snatch control of the state's government. Further, a conscripted service system is tied to the Universal Income system. All those capable, are given work, either as part of the retooled National guard or in the fields to maintain the agricultural backing of their newly formed economic system.

Meanwhile, the states of Arizona, Nevada, and Utah feel increasingly disconnected from the United States of America. The Las vegas dominated Nevada moves to join the People's Federation of California, despite some hard backlash from northern Nevada residents. Utah and Arizona meanwhile opt to petition for membership in the Republic of Texas, something that is accepted rather quickly.

And finally, A group of armed men and women storm the State House of South Dakota. Not wanting to have to delay and actually dock, the Osumi class ships each dropped their two LCACs off to ferry the men to shore. A last minute decision from Imperial High Command had seen the 7th Armored Division ordered to land in Vietnam, so now only the 1st Artillery Brigade and 3rd Field Kenpeitai were landing. With only 4,700 troops being deployed, this would be faster than other landings. Within two hours, the entire force had disembarked, now working to contact and collaborate with British forces in the region.

With three destroyers and a frigate left to provide naval support, the Kido Buntai quickly moved to land the 7th in Vietnam.

With AWACs constantly in the air and radar on alert, when Soviet cruise missiles were launched towards Taiwan, they were quickly detected as the heading across the strait. On alert, Imperial Army and Imperial Air Force assets were activated, with dozens of Improved-HAWK SAMs, Type 81s, and Type 93s in their select areas becoming ready for action. Across Taiwan, air raid sirens wailed as troops and civilians rushed to bunkers to shelter from the incoming fire. The few Type 03 SAMs were the first to fire, launching a volley of interceptors to down incoming missiles. Electric countermeasures were deployed, seeking to jam hostile missiles. On a more local level, hundreds of interceptors would be fired from the short-range systems, even including man-launched FIM-92A Stingers.

In the Ryukyu and southern Japan, air defenses were put on high alert, ready for other attacks.

Ultimately, with a valiant effort, all but around 23% of the hostile cruise missiles were downed. Having targeted port facilities and industries, the attack was damaging to the local economy, but did not have a drastic effect on the military situation. Japan, wary of allowing its territories and puppets having their own military industrial capabilities, heavily limited investment in those sectors and spread them out, so that they could not all be seized by a hostile force at one time. Thus, much of the damage was to civilian industry.

Among those hit was the Kuozui Motors factory, the Synopsys office building, the local Nambu plant, the Taiwan Sugar Corporation, the Tang Eng Iron Works, Hontai Motors, and slight damage to Imperial Navy port facilities in the southern portion of the country, as well as the Merlion factory. Other factories nearby had seen some damage as well. Due to the timing of the strike and relatively early alert, many casualties were averted. Estimates pointed to only 52 military personnel being killed with 104 wounded to various degrees. Around 357 civilians, mostly of Chinese origin were killed with another 432 wounded. It was believed however, the strike on the Merlion factory may have caused foreign casualties. Merlion, owned by Nippon Klick but operated by Russians had experienced numerous casualties among its civilian factory operators, especially among office staff working at this late time.

Imperial Army, Navy, and Air Force air defenses successfully intercepted a Soviet attack earlier today, bringing down almost all of the hostile missiles. Light damage occurred on military facilities, and operational status has not been affected. The majority of the damage was inflicted against civilian industries, in a despicable attack on innocent civilians by the Soviet mongrel dogs. Their war crimes will not go unpunished. Our sources indicate 357 innocent civilians were martyred in the attack, with light military casualties. Our military has gone out of its way to ensure that civilian facilities are far away from military bases, this was no mistake.

Among these casualties, we have indications that several foreign citizens were killed, including one of our respected local Russian business leaders in Taiwan province at the Merlion factory. Our sympathy and prayers go out to the families and friends of the victims of the Soviet massacre. His Imperial Holiness, the Emperor has directed that the local government receive funding to rebuild and provide compensation immediately. Our Empire must unite to rebuild and defend the Orient, and our innocent civilians from the Axis of Evil in Asia.

Enshrined at Yasukini, these heroes will be avenged. The Soviet cowards, in their desperate attempt to harm our glorious and free citizens, have committed a terrible crime. Justice will be swift.

It was a very controversial decision to say the least, as potential retaliation could be very damaging to the Japanese war effort. Yet the danger to the Kido Buntai was enough that the Empire had no choice but to act. They were lucky that the Soviets had not previously deployed their systems, and many were afraid that luck could run out. They also needed to have visible retaliation, so today would mark one of the most significant attacks of the war.

The 8 Aegis equipped guided missile destroyers of the fleet had been given their targets - dozens of Soviet military satellites critical for targeting and reconnaissance. Among these targets was the Yaogan-7 electro-optical satellite, the Yaogan-8 synthetic aperture radar satellite, the Yaogan-9 Naval Ocean Surveillance System satellites, and the Yaogan-16 Naval Ocean Surveillance System satellites. These 8 satellites were critical to the Soviet ASBM capabilities, and by eliminating this link in the kill-chain, it would render dozens and dozens of their anti-ship missile systems useless. Included was Yaogan-13, Yaogan-18, Yaogan-23, and Yaogan-29, aimed to completely destroy their SAR satellite systems, making targeting very difficult for the Soviets, then forced to rely on optical and SIGINT satellites. Also included in targeting was the Yaogan-31-02 satellites, the Yaogan-31-03 satellites, the Yaogan-31-04 satellites, the Yaogan-34, and the Yaogan-30-08 satellites.

Each targeted by three RIM-161 Standard Missile 3s, the 8 guided missile destroyers had been in coordination with JAXA and the Imperial Air Force in conducting this complex operation. Over the course of the day, the missiles would be launched when the satellites neared the area above the Japanese launch platforms, being fired to destroy the Soviet capability. If they missed a target, orders stood to fire until a hit was achieved.

Meanwhile, despite objections, the rest of the Japanese Type 15 Ballistic missiles on Taiwan were ordered to be fired, aimed at the crucial Soviet Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group's factories. The only locations to produce Soviet fifth generation fighters, once destroyed, their production would be halted for some time. Thus, 120 of these ballistic missiles were readied and fired, in one massive retaliatory barrage.

Aware of Soviet build-ups from satellite and ground intelligence, concerns were raised to high command about how to respond to the Soviet attack preparations.

Field Marshal Yamazaki chuckled. "We do not have much to fear. The Soviets are rushing their reserves to reinforce their armies. This shows their lack of decisiveness we have seen time and time again. If I were that Shinajin in charge, I would have launched a ground assault on Tianjin and Tsingtao immediately, since I would already have overwhelming numbers. But this is only to our benefit. It has given us time to build up and better prepare ourselves. By the time the Soviets attack, we will be marching on Nanking."

General Yuasa nodded. "Our intel suggests the points where we have the greatest chances of success of holding are Hainan, Tianjin, and Hong Kong. Our Hainan garrison is relatively light, but all the Soviet waiting has allowed us to mobilize militia elements and recruit the the inhabitants to prepare for the full defense of the island. Same with Tianjin. The location that most puzzles me is Hong Hong. Our sources say it seems as if they are trying to lay siege to the city. Reports show they are even trying to dam the rivers! They clearly are going for the long run."

Marshal Admiral Yamaguchi laughed. "I can only wonder who is in charge over there. Their projects will take time, and a single missile to destroy. We must continue to tie their forces down over there, as I believe that the Vietnamese will soon join the war."

Yamazaki nodded. "We just landed the 1st Artillery Brigade yesterday. When the Soviets attack Hong Kong or declare war on the British, we will fire a barrage on their positions. As for Hainan, Navy support is crucial to the successful defense of the island. If we can launch an attack on their build-up for an attack of Hainan, we can stall their invasion for quite some time onward."

Yamaguchi agreed. "I am not concerned about Hainan. For all the Soviet build-up, they don't have the landing craft to land more than several thousand men at once. Destroy the landing craft, and we destroy their ability to transport troops over to the island. I don't see why we don't have our ground forces launch some bombardment already."

Yuasa handed Yamaguchi a file of the island's armaments. "We wish to conserve ammo on the island. We estimate they should have ammo for at least three months worth of heavy fighting, but if we get into artillery exchanges over a period of time, It is possible they won't see resupply for some time. Just laying mines and readying other defensive structures should be enough for now, although I am not opposed to a small rocket strike like our allied forces did to the Tianjin Airport. "

"Our main priority should be our planned invasion. Each action we fight now is irrelevant to our final battle. We must procure equipment for our forces that are undergoing training. We must also work towards our other plans for our actions in the war." Prime Minister Tojo, who had be silent, just listening now spoke. "This is total war. To emerge victorious, we must establish a superior invasion force now."

In Hainan, full defensive preparations were already underway. Under General Hashiguchi of the Republic of China Army, several services came together to form a defense. Combined together were 1,200 RCN marines, 2,000 RCA soldiers, 350 RCN land personnel, 180 RCA pilots and ground crew, 950 IJA Kenpeitai officers, 25 IJA soldiers, 200 IJN land personnel, 70 Manchukuoan Chuchun Sabotage Unit personnel, and 12,000 irregulars from the local population, helping with labor and armed with whatever they could find.

Naval and ground mines were continuously being laid, as makeshift fortifications built, barbed wire and Czech Hedgehogs placed, and sandbags filled. Included in the planned fortifications would be a line of trenches as well as underground tunnels. While it was believed that the Soviet invasion would come any day, as the Soviets delayed, it meant more time to prepare. Artillery and other larger missile systems were hidden by cover to protect them from being located, as existing fortification was combined with newly built defenses.

For the irregular militia, they had become more organized in this time, stockpiling munitions and the arms they had. Much of this came from police armories, some military surplus, and personal collections, people working together to plan the final defense of their homes. With gun laws out the door, some with the technical knowledge made ammo, while other volunteers made grenades out of ceramic or porcelain, based on the Type 4 grenade design made all the way back during the Second World War as a last ditch weapon.

At home in Japan, orders had come down to recommission the 90 F-4EJ Kai units, all which had just recently been retired over the course of last year. They were slated to serve in second-line service, or when the time came, in what was declared a modified Kamikaze unit.

In Tsingtao, the situation was similar to Hainan, with troops building their fortifications as they were assisted by irregular troops, creating traps and preparing plans for an all out defensive. In Tianjin, things were rather quiet, defensive positions already set up and only needing improvement while troops braced themselves for combat. On occasion, a few rockets were fired on the Soviet build-up, aimed at keeping them distracted. Orders now stated rockets should be fired every 30 minutes, to keep the Soviets awake and on the defensive at all hours.

At sea, constant air patrols continued, ready to detect and destroy any Soviet submarines. Anti-submarine mines were laid around Taiwan and the Ryukyu, with chokepoints in the South China Sea heavily guarded. Any sub that tried to get through there would be sunk.

"It is very clear that we cannot afford to take these people in. Imagine the costs when we have a war on our hands. We will have a refugee crisis on our hands!" cried out the Minister of State for Disaster Management. "Where will we put them?"

The Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Measures for Declining Birthrate interjected, "We have plenty of abandoned homes across Japan, and untouched areas of forest. We could use the bump in our population, even if we have to front the costs."

Field Marshal Yamazaki smiled, bored with this meeting dealing with what was considered civilian matters. "That is a good point. Imagine, we welcome these refugees back with open arms to inspire loyalty and show the world that we are open to anyone. We will gain thousands of new workers to support the war effort as well as thousands of new recruits."

The Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport nodded excitedly. "Yes, and we can contract out our shipping companies to do it. They have lost revenue since ocean travel has become unpopular during these times. This will give them work for several months!"
